Transcript
- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Good morning, everybody! Welcome back to the Love & Rockets Book Club on 22 Panels, where, for the first time ever, Maria Marisol and I are in the same time zone, Marisol and I from outside of Chicago, as always, but Maria is visiting Mexico City.
- 0:21Tad Eggleston: So, it's… it's 9.45 in the morning for all of us. It's kind of a weird feeling.
- 0:30Maria Pena: Loving rockets.
- 0:32Tad Eggleston: Volume 2, Number 2.
- 0:35Tad Eggleston: Yes. Any opening thoughts?
- 0:39Maria Pena: Well…
- 0:45Marisol: I liked this first little, little story.
- 0:48Maria Pena: Where's… what was the cover of the project? It was Julio.
- 0:59Marisol: Yeah, I like the special one for Julio's day.
- 1:07Maria Pena: So… I feel like this.
- 1:10Maria Pena: It's, Go and Carrot Club.
- 1:20Maria Pena: So it's kind of sad, like, you know, Julio's first day at school, and he gets this great book, he's gonna learn to read, and these fucking kids, you know, that are assholes, take his book and rip it up, and…
- 1:35Maria Pena: you know, like, he's a… Julio's a sensitive kid.
- 1:41Maria Pena: And, you know, he looks at the birds, and his first thought is not, let's kill them, it's like, look at that beauty.
- 1:48Maria Pena: And that's all little kids.
- 1:50Maria Pena: You know, and they… and they kind of beat him up.
- 1:57Maria Pena: It's the tree. I mean, it's just horrible.
- 2:00Marisol: Gets the beaten for… for, I guess, losing track of him.
- 2:05Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 2:05Maria Pena: Yeti.
- 2:07Maria Pena: Yeah, the sister gets it as well. Like, she…
- 2:10Maria Pena: Now, what was happening with the sister, and, like, what was she up to? Because she kind of got distracted by a boy, I think, or something, or by… yeah, she was just kind of in her own…
- 2:22Tad Eggleston: to see something. If you want to, you can walk home. I'll be…
- 2:26Tad Eggleston: Right along soon, is all she said.
- 2:30Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 2:31Maria Pena: Fantastic.
- 2:32Marisol: looking up at the birds. She's such a sweet little kid.
- 2:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah, so she goes and sees a… sees… just… just looks at a guy.
- 2:40Maria Pena: Yeah, I guess she kind of wanted to go past the dude that she's got a crush on or something.
- 2:46Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 2:47Maria Pena: And then she, arrives home, and the parents are like, where's… where are the kids? And she goes, oh, shit.
- 2:54Maria Pena: Coolio hasn't arrived, and she goes back and finds him.
- 2:59Maria Pena: And, like, it's just heartbreaking. Like, you know, his book… like, you know, the first thing the teacher said was, take care of this book, the government's giving us this book, and obviously he
- 3:10Maria Pena: He's gonna take care of it, but now it's ripped up.
- 3:14Maria Pena: And the… Get him beaten up, and, you know, it's just like…
- 3:19Maria Pena: What a shit day, really. I mean, it was a great day.
- 3:23Maria Pena: point after I installed, you know… Yeah.
- 3:25Tad Eggleston: I mean, he… actually seems…
- 3:28Tad Eggleston: to have very much enjoyed his first day of school. So, like, he had this wonderful day.
- 3:34Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 3:34Marisol: It was just going home that was the problem.
- 3:37Tad Eggleston: Until he got beat up, had his books stolen, and…
- 3:41Tad Eggleston: Got hung in a tree without his pants.
- 3:45Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 3:46Tad Eggleston: Talk about a way to just, like… Destroy…
- 3:50Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 3:51Maria Pena: Your first… yeah, your first experience of school, and…
- 3:56Maria Pena: Like, it kind of was, the sister kind of left him, you know, to his own devices, to be honest.
- 4:02Maria Pena: Maybe she should be written up, no, just kidding.
- 4:05Marisol: Well, the thing for me is…
- 4:08Maria Pena: Did you deserve that meeting?
- 4:10Marisol: Oh, at least, like, the kids, like, going to school and coming back home by themselves, and the older sister being in charge of the younger brother, this feels a lot like…
- 4:21Marisol: Oh my god, of course, my upstairs neighbors are doing something, so I'm sorry that you're here, working.
- 4:26Tad Eggleston: I can't, it's, it's, it's.
- 4:30Maria Pena: No, Zoom got a… The block set out.
- 4:33Marisol: Oh.
- 4:34Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's pretty good intent. Don't worry.
- 4:36Marisol: Because it's obnoxious. But, like, this, this…
- 4:41Marisol: like I said, the, the goal…
- 4:42Maria Pena: Are they having sex or something upstairs?
- 4:47Marisol: I… God, I hope not.
- 4:48Tad Eggleston: It's like, I wish.
- 4:51Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 4:52Maria Pena: It'll be more entertaining.
- 4:54Marisol: The noises I'm hearing, I… I hope not. They're hitting something. Home repairs.
- 5:00Maria Pena: Good bedhead. Anyway, sorry…
- 5:04Tad Eggleston: Is there a rhythm to it?
- 5:09Marisol: Right. But, like, the, seeing them go back and forth to school themselves, and, like, the older sister being in charge of the little kid, and just…
- 5:19Marisol: you know, getting a whoopin' for not being, like, quote-unquote responsible, it reminds me of… A little bit.
- 5:27Marisol: Of how my mom said she grew up in Mexico?
- 5:31Marisol: Where the kids were just kind of, like, You're… you're responsible for, like.
- 5:37Marisol: Getting yourself to and from school. Sometimes you gotta go to the store by yourself, and you're here, like, 5, 6, 7 years old doing that.
- 5:45Maria Pena: yeah.
- 5:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah, huh. I mean…
- 5:49Maria Pena: Yeah, El Salvador too, you know, like…
- 5:51Marisol: Bye-bye.
- 5:51Maria Pena: My brother needed to buy his school clothes, and he was, like, 7 years old, and my mom had to work, and she, you know, he went on a bus to the center of the city and bought himself some clothes, and he was telling him to go by himself. I mean, he was very…
- 6:10Maria Pena: He was very… For 7, but, you know, but that was the kind of level of those… in the
- 6:16Maria Pena: you know, 60s, I guess, or whatever. I don't know.
- 6:21Marisol: 70s, 70s.
- 6:23Tad Eggleston: Yes, some of that lasts into… to even later in, like, small town areas, because I remember visiting my grandmother in Galena, or my Aunt Janet in any number of small towns that she was a pastor in.
- 6:38Tad Eggleston: When I was young.
- 6:41Maria Pena: I feel like, you know…
- 6:44Tad Eggleston: I don't think I was much older than 7 before I was allowed to walk down the hill into downtown and shop on my own and come back. You know, as long as there was, like, a controlled area where they knew how to find you.
- 6:59Tad Eggleston: You know, that…
- 7:03Tad Eggleston: used to be more the norm, I feel like. I feel like that's one of the things that changed massively with video games.
- 7:11Tad Eggleston: I think that, that, like…
- 7:13Tad Eggleston: It really, it really, it really says a lot about how much of parenting is actually about the parent, because, like.
- 7:22Tad Eggleston: When it was,
- 7:26Tad Eggleston: When the only way to have the kids out of your hair was to have them go outside and play and roam.
- 7:34Tad Eggleston: Then it was character building.
- 7:37Tad Eggleston: When you can send them to the basement to play video games and get the same thing, then how dare you allow them to be out on their own? Don't you know there are dangerous people?
- 7:48Maria Pena: Yeah, I know.
- 7:51Maria Pena: I think so, also, we're more aware of, you know, the dangerous people out there, but.
- 7:55Tad Eggleston: We are, but they're also statistically less than they used to be.
- 8:01Maria Pena: Yes, yes, especially now with all the CCTV, really, like…
- 8:05Tad Eggleston: It's actually way less dangerous in the world than it was in the 50s.
- 8:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Much less, like…
- 8:12Marisol: Cambos everywhere.
- 8:13Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah, I…
- 8:14Tad Eggleston: Much less likely to get just randomly beat up by older kids who have nothing better to do, because, like.
- 8:23Tad Eggleston: That's not only more frowned upon now, but, like.
- 8:28Tad Eggleston: The consequences are more likely to be, like, jail time rather than their parents getting mad at them.
- 8:36Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 8:37Maria Pena: exactly.
- 8:40Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 8:42Maria Pena: Poor Julio.
- 8:43Marisol: It makes me feel better.
- 8:45Maria Pena: In the last frame…
- 8:46Marisol: kid!
- 8:47Marisol: And here they are, just beating them up for no reason, and ripping.
- 8:50Tad Eggleston: Well, and the birds. The birds kill me.
- 8:54Maria Pena: The birds at the end with the, yeah.
- 8:56Tad Eggleston: installed.
- 8:57Marisol: I've done that.
- 8:58Maria Pena: Like, oh, you just want to kill those kids. Not kill them, but, you know what I mean? You want to just give them a…
- 9:03Tad Eggleston: You want to have Julio's papa take that strap to him.
- 9:07Maria Pena: Yeah, exactly. Yeah, with the nail in it. It's like, Jesus.
- 9:13Tad Eggleston: The nail is just what's hung on. It's not…
- 9:16Maria Pena: No, no, no. Oh, I see.
- 9:20Maria Pena: Oh, I thought it had a nail on it. I was like, gee.
- 9:23Tad Eggleston: No, no, no, no, no.
- 9:24Maria Pena: Those have been extreme.
- 9:27Tad Eggleston: I know, it's not that level of cruelty, it's that level of preparedness.
- 9:33Maria Pena: Yes, yes.
- 9:35Maria Pena: It's got a…
- 9:36Marisol: Thumbnail in…
- 9:37Tad Eggleston: I don't need to go find something to spank you with. I have it hanging right here.
- 9:43Marisol: Yes, ready?
- 9:44Maria Pena: It's ready for action.
- 9:46Maria Pena: Yep. Yeah.
- 9:48Maria Pena: Yeah, so I really enjoyed that story, although it made me sad, I'm gonna say, but .
- 9:54Marisol: Yeah.
- 9:56Maria Pena: Alright.
- 9:58Tad Eggleston: Business Suit Magazine army.
- 10:00Tad Eggleston: I mean, not as much as most other Maggies, but, like…
- 10:05Tad Eggleston: You know, this is a cool pinup.
- 10:08Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 10:10Maria Pena: So Maggie's having a bit of a… what is it? This is a… not a midlife crisis, but a sort of a… yeah, you know…
- 10:18Maria Pena: Early?
- 10:19Marisol: Okay.
- 10:19Maria Pena: Adulthood crisis, or something.
- 10:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 10:22Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 10:24Tad Eggleston: Trying to figure out… What she wants, what she's doing.
- 10:27Maria Pena: She's still cool. You know, I'm not cool anymore, I'm not a kid, but, you know, so…
- 10:34Marisol: But I'm not a, you know.
- 10:35Maria Pena: I haven't achieved yet anything yet, and even her ex-boyfriend are ugly guys, but a pretty girlfriend. I love her expression here on this page in the middle right panel. Yes.
- 10:47Tad Eggleston: bring up It's just…
- 10:50Marisol: My shallow?
- 10:53Tad Eggleston: Like, like, the absolute horror.
- 10:55Maria Pena: Yeah, she thinks…
- 10:56Tad Eggleston: So, am I shallow.
- 10:58Maria Pena: And I love that last panel there, that was… I almost bagged it as.
- 11:05Tad Eggleston: I'm normal.
- 11:06Maria Pena: I was like, yeah, look, that's a t-shirt.
- 11:09Tad Eggleston: Actually, it's like a two-panel thing.
- 11:12Tad Eggleston: Just going… going vertically here.
- 11:15Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:16Tad Eggleston: like, shallow.
- 11:17Tad Eggleston: Am I?
- 11:19Tad Eggleston: Have I been living off this punk cockiness so long that I couldn't see? I really have nothing to say?
- 11:25Tad Eggleston: No wonder Tony Chase divorced me, she says, with just, like, absolute exaggerated horror, and then the panel down is, you know, the silhouetted head down.
- 11:39Tad Eggleston: I'm… Normal.
- 11:41Marisol: Normal!
- 11:44Maria Pena: Yeah, that's a… that's a whole image right there, like…
- 11:49Marisol: Incredible.
- 11:50Maria Pena: Everybody can relate to that, to relate to that.
- 11:53Marisol: Well, you kind of realize, oh, I'm just average. I love…
- 11:59Tad Eggleston: I love it when you have a grid page like this and discover that you can read it in different ways and have it be just.
- 12:05Maria Pena: is interested.
- 12:06Tad Eggleston: Interesting.
- 12:07Maria Pena: Yes.
- 12:09Maria Pena: You know, you've got a very interesting story just reading down.
- 12:14Tad Eggleston: across.
- 12:15Marisol: Yep.
- 12:17Tad Eggleston: And they both managed to convey roughly the same message.
- 12:22Maria Pena: Yeah. You know.
- 12:25Maria Pena: Yeah, it never occur to me to do that, but you're right.
- 12:28Tad Eggleston: I mean, it does sometimes, like, one of the reasons it's been occurring to me more is we seem to be going through another period with
- 12:36Tad Eggleston: a handful of creators doing, like, really weird stuff with comics. Like, there was… the newest issue of Ice Cream Man was a deck of cards.
- 12:46Maria Pena: Oh, okay.
- 12:47Tad Eggleston: And they're, like, they're intended to be read in a specific order, but at the same time, like, you know…
- 12:53Tad Eggleston: That you could start messing around in. Right, like, it warns you not to shuffle them, blah blah blah, but it almost feels like a dare.
- 13:04Maria Pena: Are they numbered, or are they…
- 13:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah, they're.
- 13:06Maria Pena: You have to work it out. They're numbered. Oh, that's good.
- 13:10Marisol: So at least we know the order.
- 13:11Maria Pena: And they cut…
- 13:12Tad Eggleston: And they come in order, but… but, like…
- 13:16Marisol: I'm hastened to shuffle, though.
- 13:18Tad Eggleston: And, like… Right there.
- 13:20Tad Eggleston: the last issue of Absolute Martian Manhunter, they did a thing where to really get what's going on in the last page, you actually have to hold it up to the light so that the other side will shine through.
- 13:36Marisol: Oh!
- 13:37Marisol: No, go.
- 13:38Tad Eggleston: You know, so, so…
- 13:40Maria Pena: Getting very conceptual.
- 13:43Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, this is the stuff that, like, they do in Raw Magazine and whatnot way back.
- 13:49Tad Eggleston: Right? But to see stuff like that showing up in mainstream comics just has.
- 13:54Maria Pena: as me.
- 13:55Tad Eggleston: anytime I'm looking at things, trying to look at it from…
- 13:58Tad Eggleston: As many different angles as possible.
- 14:01Tad Eggleston: And as I was zooming in on the horrified Maggie pop…
- 14:06Tad Eggleston: column, I just immediately went down and went, oh my god, that… those two columns would just be a great thing to throw on your wall.
- 14:13Marisol: Oh, yeah.
- 14:17Maria Pena: Yep.
- 14:22Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 14:23Tad Eggleston: We learn about Hopi's Eye here, don't we?
- 14:26Marisol: Yes.
- 14:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:29Maria Pena: Yes, we know what happened to Hopi Thai.
- 14:31Marisol: Nope.
- 14:32Tad Eggleston: And, the glass when Frogmouth got hit with a box.
- 14:36Maria Pena: BM.
- 14:37Tad Eggleston: So of course she blames Frogmouth for getting hit out over the head with the bottle. It's not the… it's not the woman who hit her with the bottle.
- 14:45Marisol: It's maybe…
- 14:46Maria Pena: Of course. But Frogmouth was… was…
- 14:49Maria Pena: Well, Vivian was running her math, you know, as she always does, is what… so she brings trouble to herself, and then other people get hurt as well. I think it's the, what he's thinking.
- 15:02Tad Eggleston: I mean, yes, but Vivian's also kinda… Hopi's type, and into men.
- 15:09Tad Eggleston: Say it.
- 15:11Maria Pena: I think there's a bit of, misdirected, kind of, some kind of attraction or something.
- 15:18Marisol: No, no, part of this is knowing… knowing…
- 15:20Tad Eggleston: Like, some of the… well, I don't… I don't think we got to it here.
- 15:26Tad Eggleston: knowing some of the future between Vivi and Maggie, you know…
- 15:32Maria Pena: Oh, man.
- 15:33Tad Eggleston: Hopi is definitely jealous that they wind up having… At least some.
- 15:43Maria Pena: Kind of thing, yeah.
- 15:44Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 15:44Maria Pena: Yeah, because Viva's very, keen on hanging out with Maggie.
- 15:51Maria Pena: Yeah, like, she keeps kind of thinking, like, let's go do this, let's go do that.
- 15:58Tad Eggleston: Oh, I learned what these things were called recently.
- 16:01Marisol: Oh, yeah?
- 16:02Tad Eggleston: And I can't remember right now. There's actually a word for, like, the sweat things flying off in comics. I don't remember what it is.
- 16:14Marisol: Oh no! I don't know.
- 16:17Maria Pena: I know. Meh.
- 16:18Marisol: Nemon?
- 16:19Tad Eggleston: But I do, I do love this, this…
- 16:21Marisol: I didn't know they had the actual name.
- 16:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Well, kind of like, when they replace a swear word with symbols, it's called Grolics.
- 16:31Marisol: Oh.
- 16:33Marisol: I didn't know that had a name either.
- 16:36Marisol: I learned something today.
- 16:38Maria Pena: That's a great cartoony kind of… I was, noticing last night, Jaime's handling of, drapery. I was just like, he's just…
- 16:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 16:50Maria Pena: Like, all the…
- 16:51Maria Pena: great, because Maggie's wearing his loose jacket. Oh, yeah, no. He's handling his, the sleeves, and even the little wrinkles on the tight pants on the…
- 17:05Tad Eggleston: I was gonna say, the… well, and the way the flare…
- 17:08Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Yeah, no, Jaime has always been very serious about making… Making clothes hang properly.
- 17:17Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 17:18Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 17:19Marisol: Incredible.
- 17:20Maria Pena: But it's particularly, like, there's so much drapery in this, like, look at all those jeans when the girls are having it.
- 17:25Marisol: Bye. Yeah.
- 17:26Maria Pena: Like, there's so many, little… little creases.
- 17:32Tad Eggleston: I hope bail isn't more than $7.30.
- 17:38Maria Pena: Yeah, it's great.
- 17:40Marisol: Oh, man.
- 17:41Maria Pena: a great panel with Maggie, following, Vivian into this for this. Just getting manhandled into there.
- 17:53Maria Pena: It's great.
- 17:53Marisol: The one on the top right of this page, where she's just waiting while Vivian's in a fight.
- 18:00Maria Pena: He's not gonna get involved. Nope.
- 18:04Marisol: I'm gonna hang out right over here.
- 18:06Tad Eggleston: She's not even staring like the boys. The boys are all staring because we're at the, don't take my fucking top off, bitch, don't take mine off!
- 18:13Maria Pena: Yeah, boys, I won't.
- 18:14Tad Eggleston: Oh, we're not gonna… we don't want to split this up anymore.
- 18:20Tad Eggleston: Carry on!
- 18:21Maria Pena: Go!
- 18:22Marisol: Anyway!
- 18:25Maria Pena: No, but, you know, Maggie's got enough, you know, street smarts to know that if she gets involved, she's gonna get pulled out, she's gonna end up in jail, so she just, like, stays right out of it, and then she waits.
- 18:41Maria Pena: Alright.
- 18:43Marisol: Hmm.
- 18:45Maria Pena: I love the stars around the girls fighting, too.
- 18:48Marisol: Yep.
- 18:51Tad Eggleston: And then we go back to… Part 2 of our…
- 18:56Maria Pena: Yes.
- 18:57Marisol: Hmm.
- 18:57Maria Pena: And.
- 18:58Tad Eggleston: That's true.
- 18:59Maria Pena: earlier that, I got to that beat, and I thought.
- 19:03Maria Pena: It's been so long since we read Part 1 that I had to go back and read the Part 1 again, because I was like, who's this guy again?
- 19:12Tad Eggleston: I didn't, but I just remembered. He's the guy that saw the opportunity to run off on his… with all the money, and left his family, left everybody, and…
- 19:20Maria Pena: Cares or something, yeah.
- 19:22Tad Eggleston: Doesn't look like that actually worked well for him.
- 19:25Marisol: Nope.
- 19:26Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 19:27Maria Pena: So he's tied up in a boat.
- 19:30Maria Pena: Ugh.
- 19:31Tad Eggleston: Beat to hell.
- 19:33Tad Eggleston: But he's still got his briefcase.
- 19:36Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah. So this is a very dense story, I gotta say. You know, I had to… once I went back, I kind of…
- 19:44Maria Pena: I'll kind of went, okay, I think I'll get more of a grasp.
- 19:49Maria Pena: But the old man, the owner, the original owner of the company is…
- 19:56Maria Pena: the peasants, or somebody has flooded the valley, and he… and he's been evacuated, and then all the,
- 20:04Maria Pena: All the servants or whatever are taking all his stuff.
- 20:09Maria Pena: And then this is the wife of the…
- 20:11Maria Pena: Meanwhile, the guy's family's got a… Gotcha.
- 20:17Marisol: This one at the bottom there with the… the butler carrying the guy in here.
- 20:23Tad Eggleston: On the chair.
- 20:24Marisol: I'll go back.
- 20:25Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 20:26Marisol: That might… that might be my favorite panel just for that. Yeah, that's great.
- 20:29Tad Eggleston: I do appreciate the fact that he says, you know, Chestwig, I don't pay you enough.
- 20:34Marisol: Yep, that's true.
- 20:37Maria Pena: At least, yeah, he appreciates that, yeah.
- 20:39Tad Eggleston: and… Just because this came up recently in… in…
- 20:44Tad Eggleston: discussion with my cousin, because my grandfather also did art, not comic art, but…
- 20:50Tad Eggleston: But he was,
- 20:52Tad Eggleston: sketch artist, and she talked about loving his skies, and it immediately made me think of Beto, so this is…
- 21:00Maria Pena: That's right.
- 21:01Tad Eggleston: Classic Beto Sky.
- 21:03Tad Eggleston: Classic Beto Sky.
- 21:05Maria Pena: I love the way he draws his skies.
- 21:08Maria Pena: Yep.
- 21:11Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 21:12Tad Eggleston: We haven't… we haven't had any erotostigmata in a while.
- 21:16Marisol: No.
- 21:17Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 21:17Tad Eggleston: It's kinda cool to be back to that, though this was a…
- 21:21Maria Pena: Yay.
- 21:21Tad Eggleston: BS story.
- 21:23Maria Pena: Very trivy, yeah, she's…
- 21:25Tad Eggleston: They all are.
- 21:26Maria Pena: portrait?
- 21:26Tad Eggleston: all the different cures that she's trying to find for her. Right.
- 21:31Maria Pena: dilemma, per se.
- 21:34Tad Eggleston: I like the.
- 21:38Maria Pena: The middle panel there, floating in the…
- 21:41Tad Eggleston: the middle panel, but I also like this balloon that's.
- 21:45Maria Pena: She's like…
- 21:46Tad Eggleston: Then it gets higher, and it's…
- 21:49Maria Pena: Yeah, and it's just tethered to this post.
- 21:53Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 21:53Maria Pena: Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:55Maria Pena: Very, very… LA.
- 21:57Tad Eggleston: the skyline.
- 21:59Maria Pena: Yeah, I love that last panel.
- 22:01Tad Eggleston: to the skyline.
- 22:02Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 22:04Maria Pena: And yeah, like, her expression is like, goddamn.
- 22:08Maria Pena: Yep.
- 22:10Maria Pena: I continued to search for it.
- 22:15Maria Pena: Is Natalia Beto's daughter's name?
- 22:20Tad Eggleston: It is.
- 22:22Tad Eggleston: Which, which made me, which made me love this even more, because it's Roy…
- 22:29Maria Pena: We're in the top.
- 22:30Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 22:31Tad Eggleston: And now, the Roy comic also features stories from Natalia, so I loved the…
- 22:39Tad Eggleston: The real world synchronicity of that.
- 22:45Maria Pena: It's obviously portrayed her there, like, he's made a very big effort to make her look like…
- 22:51Maria Pena: Natalia, I would assume.
- 22:54Maria Pena: It looks like a very, very carefully done.
- 22:58Tad Eggleston: I totally forgot to ask Beto about that when I talked to him last week. It was in the back of my head. As soon as… as soon as I read this, when we were, you know, before we had to cancel, because my wife was in the hospital, I went, oh, I've got Beto on the calendar, I'm gonna have to ask him about this. And then I completely forgot.
- 23:17Marisol: I don't know.
- 23:18Maria Pena: Oh well.
- 23:20Tad Eggleston: We had plenty to talk about, it was fine. But yeah, Roy and Natalia go way back to Love & Rockets Volume 2, Number 2.
- 23:29Tad Eggleston: Which… came out in… July of 2001?
- 23:37Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, she would have been about… cause she's…
- 23:40Tad Eggleston: I wanna say she's, like, smack dab between my kids.
- 23:44Tad Eggleston: Age-wise.
- 23:46Maria Pena: Okay.
- 23:47Tad Eggleston: My son was 2001, my daughter was 98, I think she was 99 or 2000.
- 23:55Maria Pena: Wow.
- 23:59Maria Pena: Alright.
- 24:02Maria Pena: And I love the back cover of this.
- 24:05Maria Pena: got to it, and I went, whoa!
- 24:08Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 24:08Maria Pena: Like, this is my favorite pedal for today, before anybody else bikes it.
- 24:13Tad Eggleston: It's outstanding.
- 24:16Tad Eggleston: Little things, like the fact that the shoe is old.
- 24:18Maria Pena: falling apart. Right.
- 24:21Maria Pena: It reminds me of,
- 24:24Maria Pena: of, Henry Cartier-Bresson's The Decisive, that this is… this is… Photo that he took.
- 24:32Maria Pena: Of a man jumping over a puzzle, and he's just…
- 24:35Maria Pena: In midair, and there's a reflection of… there's this massive paddle… puddle.
- 24:40Maria Pena: And there's a reflection of the man. Like, if this guy had a perfectly perfect reflection underneath.
- 24:47Maria Pena: And it's silhouetted, I mean, yeah, it's… Pretty awesome.
- 24:53Tad Eggleston: What I also love…
- 24:54Maria Pena: Chairman.
- 24:55Tad Eggleston: Is you can't quite figure out what he's doing.
- 24:59Maria Pena: No, it's…
- 25:00Tad Eggleston: On one side, it almost looks like he's walking off a tall building, like, I'm ending it all, but then he has an audience that doesn't seem…
- 25:09Tad Eggleston: Doesn't seem like, oh my god, what are you doing?
- 25:13Marisol: Yep.
- 25:14Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 25:15Tad Eggleston: And now the background doesn't look as much like…
- 25:20Tad Eggleston: A building under construction because of the audience, and is that a beer keg in the middle, or is that something else?
- 25:28Tad Eggleston: You know, there's so many things that could be multiple things, and so many little details, like… like this guy wearing glasses.
- 25:38Tad Eggleston: Just can barely see the silhouette of the glasses on the bald guy.
- 25:43Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah, no, I know. And then there's a woman with a cigarette, and…
- 25:47Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 25:48Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 25:49Maria Pena: And, like, even his tie clip, you know, you can see.
- 25:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 25:54Maria Pena: Can you see in the chat the image pages?
- 25:57Maria Pena: Yeah, so, reminds me of that each.
- 26:00Marisol: Let's see… Oh, nice!
- 26:04Tad Eggleston: chat window.
- 26:06Maria Pena: So that's, Henry Cartier-Bristol.
- 26:12Marisol: Oh, that's cool.
- 26:13Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, I see it.
- 26:15Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 26:17Maria Pena: But as soon as I saw it, I was like, oh my god, that reminds me.
- 26:22Maria Pena: It's a very, iconic, iconic photo. Anyway, yeah.
- 26:29Maria Pena: Love it, love it.
- 26:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 26:36Maria Pena: Okay, so we go through Luba?
- 26:39Tad Eggleston: We shall.
- 26:47Marisol: For Luba, I love the front cover, where…
- 26:51Tad Eggleston: discover.
- 26:51Marisol: Ophelia's front and center, and the rest of the family is around her.
- 26:56Marisol: I mean, they're all just heads on the cover, but… Still.
- 27:00Marisol: I like seeing the family in color every once in a while to see just how
- 27:05Marisol: Similar and different they all are.
- 27:09Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 27:10Maria Pena: And it's like, they all revolve around Ophelia, you know, Ophelia.
- 27:16Maria Pena: Lago is like this rock that they're all part of.
- 27:20Maria Pena: You know, depended upon.
- 27:23Marisol: She is their son in their universe.
- 27:26Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 27:27Maria Pena: Yeah, exactly.
- 27:34Tad Eggleston: I love the, almost… Old-time movie.
- 27:41Marisol: Yeah, with the credits.
- 27:43Tad Eggleston: Silent movie credit cards.
- 27:46Maria Pena: Yay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:48Marisol: Who knows?
- 27:49Maria Pena: Yeah, it's great, like, the credits, and then you get a little bit of characters.
- 27:56Maria Pena: I love this first splash page.
- 28:04Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the darkness.
- 28:07Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 28:09Maria Pena: Just the way she blends into… Well, and it's, like.
- 28:13Tad Eggleston: Like… you know, I might have finally found the Luba t-shirt that I can have, because, like.
- 28:22Tad Eggleston: My wife's always uncomfortable with doing anything with Luba because her bosom is the defining feature, and here, you have enough cleavage to remind you, but it's not because of the way that she's not actually
- 28:40Tad Eggleston: Her body's not outlined, it fades into the bladder.
- 28:44Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 28:46Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 28:46Tad Eggleston: It actually focuses more on her… her face.
- 28:51Marisol: A little bit of her neck and chest, but that's not the first thing your eyes are drawn to.
- 28:55Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 28:58Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 29:03Maria Pena: Not to worry, there they are.
- 29:06Marisol: Oh my god.
- 29:07Maria Pena: Next page, you get a good…
- 29:09Marisol: We got him!
- 29:12Maria Pena: You can't see what I'm wondering.
- 29:16Maria Pena: Oh, gosh.
- 29:18Maria Pena: She's, she's got the, you know, tight top there, isn't it?
- 29:21Marisol: Poke it out.
- 29:25Marisol: Everyone in this family likes tight shirts.
- 29:30Tad Eggleston: Seems to be a thing.
- 29:32Maria Pena: From the beginning of the story, you think something's happened to Ophelia. She had a heart attack, and it's like… and everybody's really distressed, and you go, she died? What's going on?
- 29:44Marisol: That's what I thought, seeing that first page with her portrait, like, oh, God.
- 29:48Marisol: Ophelia finally died and left her book unfinished, and now it's…
- 29:55Marisol: Causing chaos in the family, or it's going to…
- 29:59Maria Pena: Nobody's having…
- 30:00Marisol: Oh, lying in a hospital bed after she got the shit beat out of her.
- 30:05Maria Pena: Yeah, bye Visa.
- 30:06Tad Eggleston: By Penn.
- 30:07Marisol: Yeah, sorry, bitch.
- 30:09Maria Pena: Petra, sorry.
- 30:11Maria Pena: And then, I love… I love Fritz coming and putting her boobs on her face, like, oh!
- 30:19Marisol: Don't worry, boobs will heal you!
- 30:22Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 30:23Tad Eggleston: I love the line here. Oh, Luba, I'll call you when it's just been too crazy. Busy. Yeah, busy putting on weight. Oof.
- 30:34Marisol: Damn.
- 30:37Maria Pena: Yes.
- 30:37Marisol: It moves in the background in that first panel on the left?
- 30:41Maria Pena: I know, I know, yeah, yeah.
- 30:42Marisol: Right under, Chris's boobs.
- 30:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I just noticed that. I was like, oh, there's boots. Boots?
- 30:50Maria Pena: I've just been hiding in a couple of panels already, because Boots… Boots is on…
- 30:56Tad Eggleston: Boots is there with Luba. Is Boots on page 1 too?
- 30:59Maria Pena: everything. No boots on page one, but…
- 31:04Tad Eggleston: We get a little bit of boots on two panels on page 3, and… and…
- 31:11Tad Eggleston: More boots on page 4.
- 31:14Tad Eggleston: Does Boots actually speak in this story, though?
- 31:17Maria Pena: Or is she just there? It's almost like, find… find the boots, you know? Find boots.
- 31:24Marisol: Yeah, like, where's Waldo but for boots?
- 31:28Tad Eggleston: You gotta love Fortunato.
- 31:30Maria Pena: Play a little good.
- 31:31Tad Eggleston: Visiting the hospital.
- 31:35Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 31:37Maria Pena: Yeah, he's got a new hair… hairdo, a little mullet.
- 31:42Maria Pena: And, and of course, as soon as sex happens, Fortunato!
- 31:46Marisol: He is. His big title card.
- 31:49Tad Eggleston: Just, yeah.
- 31:54Maria Pena: That's hilarious.
- 31:55Tad Eggleston: And then Boots finally gets a whole headshot. Still no dialogue. No, one.
- 32:02Marisol: The next panel, yeah.
- 32:03Maria Pena: She's, she's talking.
- 32:05Tad Eggleston: Are you gonna dress as ace?
- 32:07Maria Pena: Just listen.
- 32:09Maria Pena: She listens.
- 32:10Tad Eggleston: Samurai rabbit.
- 32:11Maria Pena: is… .
- 32:13Marisol: Interest.
- 32:15Maria Pena: I guess she's taking notes for her book.
- 32:17Marisol: Everything then knows everything.
- 32:25Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 32:26Maria Pena: Oh boy, Luba, Jesus.
- 32:29Maria Pena: Yeah, it's a lot of big booths, and this… this page is, like, ugharama. I've just noticed.
- 32:35Tad Eggleston: Well, you know, I mean, with people in the hospital, there's nobody left over the age of 12 that doesn't have boobs.
- 32:44Maria Pena: Enormous boobs.
- 32:46Marisol: Damn.
- 32:50Marisol: Good, that's fine.
- 32:53Marisol: Now we have Guadalupe here, like, doing some stuff for, people's show, too.
- 32:59Marisol: Right? That's what she's still doing.
- 33:01Tad Eggleston: Well, and the guy's going to talk to Fortunato.
- 33:05Marisol: Gantil and Sergio.
- 33:13Marisol: Mmm, do we get a…
- 33:15Maria Pena: No, I was almost expecting Fortunato to… to, to fuck Sergio for some reason.
- 33:22Tad Eggleston: Well, you know, I mean, there's still time.
- 33:24Maria Pena: Because, you know, nobody can resist him.
- 33:29Marisol: Yep.
- 33:30Maria Pena: unfortunate.
- 33:32Tad Eggleston: Oh, they put him in the trunk, that's right.
- 33:35Marisol: Oh, this panel.
- 33:37Maria Pena: of the.
- 33:37Marisol: computer of what Gaza was.
- 33:39Tad Eggleston: Guadalians, you know, a love story.
- 33:42Maria Pena: Yeah, Gato is, like, almost encouraging, Guadalupe to sleep with Sarah.
- 33:48Marisol: Thank you.
- 33:50Maria Pena: He's all made up in his mind that they're going to sleep together. It's really weird.
- 33:55Maria Pena: And he started thinking how… and then I'll get back to people.
- 33:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 34:00Maria Pena: So… Yeah.
- 34:03Maria Pena: Whoa.
- 34:04Maria Pena: Another… Oh, baby.
- 34:12Tad Eggleston: Notice, oh, yes.
- 34:14Maria Pena: Then we, we see, at the bottom panel here, we see Ophelia on her back, and you think, okay, she did die, you know?
- 34:22Marisol: Yep.
- 34:23Marisol: What's up? I just stared at this page.
- 34:29Marisol: where Ophelia gets up and, like, starts packing some clothes, and, like.
- 34:34Marisol: Is… did she actually survive that heart attack, and she's actually here packing shit up? Or is this all Luba's imagination?
- 34:43Maria Pena: To explain, I thought about that.
- 34:45Marisol: Julia dying.
- 34:47Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 34:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Lube is thinking of it as her…
- 34:53Tad Eggleston: Her abandoning me and going back home, I hadn't thought of that.
- 35:04Maria Pena: Yeah, well…
- 35:06Marisol: Louise.
- 35:07Maria Pena: And, oh, and Luba sort of reminds…
- 35:11Maria Pena: Ophelia, that Ophelia used to kind of…
- 35:14Maria Pena: I don't know if it beat her up or whatever, maybe she did.
- 35:17Marisol: And we threaten to.
- 35:18Tad Eggleston: I think she did some early on.
- 35:22Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 35:24Marisol: When Luble was first, her and her family.
- 35:26Tad Eggleston: Ophelia mellowed after the church fell on her.
- 35:32Marisol: I forgot.
- 35:35Maria Pena: So good.
- 35:37Marisol: Why her back is a problem.
- 35:39Tad Eggleston: Oh, wait, there's no big Fortunato in this scene, though.
- 35:43Marisol: Nope, he just…
- 35:44Maria Pena: That's a sh…
- 35:44Marisol: beat out of him.
- 35:46Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 35:47Tad Eggleston: So he only… he only gets the big Fortunato when he's fucking, not when he's getting fucked.
- 35:54Marisol: Meh.
- 35:54Maria Pena: Oh, that's right.
- 35:55Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 35:57Maria Pena: Yeah. Funny? Oh, yeah, it's only, I think, when he, achieves orgasm, probably.
- 36:04Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, no.
- 36:06Maria Pena: Maybe. Oh, man, yeah, that's a horrible beating, that's circular.
- 36:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, this is…
- 36:11Tad Eggleston: You know, I overall like Sergio, and this is definitely one of the moments that makes it hard to like Sergio.
- 36:19Maria Pena: Yeah, that's very beyond.
- 36:23Marisol: Gotcha hanging out in the back, just watching this happen.
- 36:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah, but I never liked Gatto.
- 36:29Marisol: No.
- 36:30Marisol: I don't think any of us did.
- 36:32Tad Eggleston: I mean, that was actually a recurring theme in my recent conversation with Beto, and like,
- 36:38Tad Eggleston: We're still along…
- 36:40Tad Eggleston: ways from it in our reading, so I won't give away too much, but, like, a lot of his recent stuff is centered on Fritz, and…
- 36:48Tad Eggleston: Fritz is a really complicated character, you know? The more recent stuff has made it really hard to like Fritz.
- 36:55Marisol: Oh.
- 36:56Tad Eggleston: You know, and that's been hard for me, reading it, as brilliant as it is, because, like.
- 37:02Tad Eggleston: A lot of the stuff before it made it really easy to like France.
- 37:06Marisol: Yeah.
- 37:07Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 37:12Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, no, he, he, he, he…
- 37:19Tad Eggleston: He really is a master of showing… that people… Aren't just one thing.
- 37:28Marisol: And now we have here both, I guess, Ophelia and Kamo left the house?
- 37:33Tad Eggleston: Right. I mean, overall, Sergio is somebody that we've known as a generally good guy.
- 37:39Tad Eggleston: Takes care of his mom.
- 37:41Tad Eggleston: Ladies man, but not in a… like…
- 37:46Marisol: Overly gross way.
- 37:48Tad Eggleston: Right, I mean, one of the times that we spent the most time with Sergio was actually in the story with Venus that we got from both sides, and it's like…
- 37:59Tad Eggleston: Oh, he's taking this kid along, and yeah, he's… he's doing some shady shit, but it seems more like he's trying to…
- 38:05Tad Eggleston: Bail loved ones out of shady shit.
- 38:10Tad Eggleston: And he's managing to take care of this little kid while he does it, and… And now, like…
- 38:19Tad Eggleston: I mean, what has Fortunato Done.
- 38:23Tad Eggleston: Really.
- 38:25Tad Eggleston: Like, none of the women… Who have been involved with them.
- 38:30Tad Eggleston: seem to have been unwillingly involved with them. None of them seem to have been…
- 38:41Tad Eggleston: Upset with how things went, and none of them have left their, like, committed relationships because of it.
- 38:50Maria Pena: Right.
- 38:51Tad Eggleston: He's just sick of spreading… he's just spreading happiness, really.
- 38:55Marisol: Right.
- 38:56Tad Eggleston: So, essentially, all Fortunato is, is, like.
- 39:00Tad Eggleston: A sign of the ways in which The other men around… these women…
- 39:12Tad Eggleston: Fail, or, or can't… Y-you know…
- 39:16Tad Eggleston: Leave at least something to be desired.
- 39:21Tad Eggleston: But, like, clearly not everything, or the women would leave them.
- 39:27Tad Eggleston: They like to have their dalliances with Fortunato, and the men just can't handle that.
- 39:35Marisol: Hmm.
- 39:38Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 39:42Marisol: I find it incredible that a good portion of Luba's family that was involved with Fortunato
- 39:47Marisol: Plus people, I think. Yes, people at that point.
- 39:50Tad Eggleston: Pipo, Luba… Both of her sisters, at least one of her daughters… no, at least two of her daughters.
- 39:58Marisol: I think it was Doralis and Guadalupe?
- 40:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 40:03Marisol: I think…
- 40:04Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 40:05Maria Pena: I think Fortunato is an otherworldly character, and I…
- 40:08Tad Eggleston: Well, and that's exactly… that's exactly what I'm wondering, is…
- 40:13Tad Eggleston: And it's one of those things I can't remember, because, like, I've read Love and Rockets in order once, and I've read it out of order a lot of times, so I sometimes have trouble remembering what stories go where. I'm not 100% certain this is the last we see of Fortunato, which… which raises the question, is Fortunato…
- 40:34Tad Eggleston: Like, one of the… the… .
- 40:39Maria Pena: It's a…
- 40:40Tad Eggleston: Realism.
- 40:40Maria Pena: kind of…
- 40:41Tad Eggleston: Elements of the story, where he's like… he's like the… the god of female pleasure.
- 40:48Maria Pena: like, the sixth angel.
- 40:51Marisol: a little bit of backstory on him, where he, along with, like, I think one or two other boys, were raised by this guy to basically be…
- 41:02Marisol: Womanizer.
- 41:03Maria Pena: Right?
- 41:04Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 41:05Marisol: And Fortunato was just… immensely… I grew up to be immensely, almost supernaturally attractive.
- 41:15Marisol: To women.
- 41:16Maria Pena: Yep.
- 41:17Marisol: It was just, like, effortless for him to…
- 41:20Maria Pena: But in a kind of… in a very benign kind of way.
- 41:24Marisol: Yeah.
- 41:25Maria Pena: I think the other guy who meant it, the guy who brought the kids up, meant it as a revenge kind of thing.
- 41:33Tad Eggleston: Well, but that could…
- 41:34Maria Pena: Ginato, kind of…
- 41:35Tad Eggleston: I mean, that plays so much into magical realism, because can't you see that being, like, a Zeus-type character, and Fortunato is the, like, half-god that's like, yeah, dad, I like what you taught me, but you're full of shit.
- 41:54Marisol: I never thought about it that way. That makes a lot of sense.
- 41:58Tad Eggleston: You know, what if we used our powers for good?
- 42:03Marisol: He's not able to… malicious… Force in all of this.
- 42:09Tad Eggleston: No, no. Like, his scene in this one, he's like, oh, so you want me to leave too? No I don't. Let me see how I can open my mouth around these bandages.
- 42:20Marisol: Nope.
- 42:22Tad Eggleston: Fortunato!
- 42:28Maria Pena: Mmm…
- 42:30Marisol: John
- 42:32Marisol: Yep, and then here he gets beat to shit, and then kicked down to the side of a cliff, and… Brutalized.
- 42:38Tad Eggleston: wise.
- 42:40Tad Eggleston: I mean, I don't think we've seen…
- 42:42Tad Eggleston: I don't… I don't know that we've seen Beto…
- 42:44Tad Eggleston: Draw anything this brutal since the human diastrophism.
- 42:50Marisol: Yeah.
- 42:51Maria Pena: Mmm, that is pretty…
- 42:54Tad Eggleston: Does this beef was intense. Yeah.
- 43:04Marisol: Yep, and then down here on…
- 43:06Marisol: Bottom of this page, we also have Kamo leaving the house.
- 43:10Maria Pena: So everybody is leaving Lou.
- 43:14Maria Pena: Luba has to take responsibility for her kids now. Nobody's gonna enable her anymore.
- 43:20Marisol: Yep.
- 43:21Maria Pena: And she didn't want Maricela's help, but she said, yeah. Right. She's…
- 43:25Marisol: She's a very proud person.
- 43:31Marisol: And I feel like a lot of times, to her own detriment.
- 43:35Marisol: Her pride gets in the way.
- 43:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 43:39Maria Pena: Yep.
- 43:45Marisol: I just don't find it so funny how they bandaged people's face.
- 43:50Marisol: Historical head.
- 43:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 43:55Maria Pena: Like, not even a little hole for the notes.
- 43:58Marisol: No, it's just, like, two little slits for the eyes and where the mouth should be, and that's it.
- 44:03Tad Eggleston: Well, and clearly that slip for the mouth is big enough for Fortunato.
- 44:07Maria Pena: Can you leave?
- 44:15Maria Pena: And that's the end. The only thing with this ending is the… when the guy says there's a… an accident ahead, and you… it leaves you wonder what's gonna happen.
- 44:27Maria Pena: What are they coming up to?
- 44:31Tad Eggleston: I love this, this line.
- 44:33Marisol: Like… True.
- 44:35Tad Eggleston: Goodbye.
- 44:37Tad Eggleston: I mean, because this is the last issue of the Luba…
- 44:40Maria Pena: Oh, blue back.
- 44:42Tad Eggleston: And the door lease.
- 44:44Maria Pena: De La Santos, saying goodnight. Good night.
- 44:53Tad Eggleston: Alright. Then all of Dora leases… is that Dora Elise, or is that Pepo?
- 44:58Maria Pena: I'm…
- 44:59Tad Eggleston: They're the young people.
- 45:00Marisol: Depot.
- 45:01Maria Pena: It is…
- 45:01Marisol: You gotcha on the road.
- 45:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 45:04Marisol: You know, in front.
- 45:07Maria Pena: And that… her first lover, you know, the one she had at 14, and… Right.
- 45:13Maria Pena: who died, and coco.
- 45:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:17Marisol: What's name?
- 45:19Maria Pena: What's Toco got to do with.
- 45:20Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 45:20Maria Pena: I can't remember.
- 45:21Tad Eggleston: Well, because he had a thing for her back when…
- 45:24Tad Eggleston: We saw her first lover, like, through the eyes of Toko, remember?
- 45:31Maria Pena: Right, right.
- 45:32Maria Pena: Well, listen, guys.
- 45:33Tad Eggleston: So it's, it's the men who have loved Pipo.
- 45:37Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 45:40Maria Pena: Including her son, which is really weird. Okay.
- 45:43Tad Eggleston: You know?
- 45:45Tad Eggleston: Interesting relationship.
- 45:48Maria Pena: Yes, it is flat. That's a word, yeah.
- 45:51Maria Pena: edible… edible.
- 45:54Marisol: Oh, man.
- 45:55Maria Pena: To say the least, yeah. All right, well…
- 45:59Tad Eggleston: So much great stuff in this…
- 46:03Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 46:04Maria Pena: The two regions were fantastic.
- 46:06Tad Eggleston: Yeah…
- 46:09Maria Pena: I love this, first flash.
- 46:12Tad Eggleston: So you're back… is… that's gotta be Jaime on the back cover.
- 46:16Maria Pena: Yes, so yeah, that's my favorite Jaime panel, please.
- 46:22Maria Pena: Because I was gonna grab the normal, abnormal panel, and then I saw this at the end, and oh no, this is it.
- 46:28Marisol: This is the one.
- 46:31Maria Pena: This is the one.
- 46:33Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I think my favorite Beto.
- 46:38Tad Eggleston: Was the… the… that opening splash page.
- 46:42Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 46:43Tad Eggleston: the, the, the Luba.
- 46:45Marisol: Yeah, that's good.
- 46:47Marisol: Mine for this one had to be, the… I forget what page it was on, but the panel where you see Ophelia laying down on her back and Luba just sitting next to her.
- 47:02Maria Pena: And the panel of photos that really grabbed me was that really big close-up of Luba's eyes, and she's saying to Ophelia, I love my children, Ophelia, and you see her big eyes, and, like, it's just like a…
- 47:17Maria Pena: Extreme close-up.
- 47:19Marisol: Just after this second.
- 47:22Maria Pena: So it's page 18, bottom of the… Bottom right, yeah.
- 47:39Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 47:42Maria Pena: Yeah, like, that's… that's a bit different from Beto, that it's… yeah, yeah, Luba really emoting, yeah.
- 47:49Marisol: Oh, yeah.
- 47:51Maria Pena: So, tears happening, everything in East.
- 47:57Maria Pena: And interesting that he didn't black out her hair. I guess she's got gray hairs now.
- 48:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah, she's been graying, and I think he's indicating that she's not coloring.
- 48:09Tad Eggleston: Or at least not coloring during this period. She's showing her gray.
- 48:15Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 48:19Maria Pena: Yeah, so yeah, that's my favorite.
- 48:23Maria Pena: It just struck me when I saw them.
- 48:34Tad Eggleston: There were so many good Beto pages in Lovin' Rockets, too. The chair one.
- 48:39Marisol: The chair one is fantastic.
- 48:40Maria Pena: Oh, yeah.
- 48:42Marisol: up.
- 48:44Tad Eggleston: I think that's my tie, actually.
- 48:48Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 48:52Tad Eggleston: That Luba page, and then the chair. Yeah.
- 48:55Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 49:03Maria Pena: I mean… I mean, Julius, they had a lot of really good time.
- 49:07Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah. No, I mean, Beto is starting to show off a lot.
- 49:23Tad Eggleston: So many good panels from… from… Jaime, too.
- 49:29Maria Pena: Oh, God, oh gosh, yeah.
- 49:31Tad Eggleston: I think I'll go with the one…
- 49:33Marisol: With Maggie's exaggerated, horrified expression. That'll be my favorite.
- 49:39Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna go a tie again, because it's gonna be between doing that vertical pair…
- 49:52Marisol: Bless you.
- 49:52Maria Pena: God bless you.
- 50:04Tad Eggleston: Between, that vertical pair and…
- 50:19Tad Eggleston: Not distracted typing.
- 50:21Marisol: Oh, no!
- 50:25Tad Eggleston: The vertical pair, and this is another one where I just love it because it's the type of thing you can do with comic… so well with comics. This panel here.
- 50:34Tad Eggleston: Where… where Frogmouse is, that fucker. He doesn't know…
- 50:39Tad Eggleston: who he's dealing with. He's gonna get this all right.
- 50:43Tad Eggleston: We victims have rights. And you've got the thought balloon from Maggie that's just, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 50:52Maria Pena: Yeah, it's just running her mouth, running her mouth.
- 50:54Tad Eggleston: Right, right. It's… it's… well, we, we talked about Grolics. It's, it's…
- 51:02Tad Eggleston: it… you know, and I think it's important, foreshadowing here, it's… it's… It's Vivian's… well-kept lips.
- 51:14Tad Eggleston: With just Grolics coming out.
- 51:19Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 51:23Maria Pena: Yeah. Or is it… or is it Maggie thinking she… she… she would be telling her to fuck off? I don't know. I don't know, maybe not. I think it is… it is what you're saying. No, I… I mean…
- 51:36Tad Eggleston: You know, blah blah blah blah. No, but, but I, I, I think,
- 51:42Tad Eggleston: They very… he very deliberately got the color and the shape of…
- 51:47Tad Eggleston: The lips and the thought balloon versus the… The lips on Vivian here.
- 51:53Tad Eggleston: Those are definitely Vivian's lips.
- 51:56Marisol: Yeah.
- 51:58Marisol: Because even looking at the top right panel here, the similarities between those two, It's like a…
- 52:04Marisol: the blur angle.
- 52:06Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 52:07Maria Pena: you.
- 52:08Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 52:11Maria Pena: Here it is.
- 52:15Tad Eggleston: But again, like, like…
- 52:18Tad Eggleston: it's another one of those just, like, perfect comic moments. I mean, you can… you can have…
- 52:25Tad Eggleston: A little bit in… in a video…
- 52:29Tad Eggleston: of, like, the eye roll or whatnot that can show that the person's not listening or not taking it seriously or whatnot. You can have…
- 52:38Tad Eggleston: A line or two in a novel that's, like…
- 52:43Tad Eggleston: this person's saying this, and Maggie…
- 52:46Tad Eggleston: didn't really care, or wasn't listening, or all Maggie heard was…
- 52:51Tad Eggleston: static, or a… you know what I mean?
- 52:54Tad Eggleston: But… that word balloon… I can't imagine… or that thought balloon, I can't imagine being captured
- 53:05Tad Eggleston: With that power in another medium.
- 53:07Tad Eggleston: It's just so…
- 53:08Maria Pena: No.
- 53:09Tad Eggleston: accurately nails the…
- 53:12Tad Eggleston: I'm listening because I'm not completely disinterested in the person, and maybe they'll say something that I care about, but I have nothing to add to this, and it's just complaining, and God, I wish you'd shut up, and…
- 53:26Maria Pena: Absolutely.
- 53:27Tad Eggleston: a little luscious.
- 53:39Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 53:42Maria Pena: My other… my other panel, it was the one I mentioned before with when Maggie's walking in…
- 53:49Maria Pena: Into… towards the police station and… and the.
- 53:53Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 53:54Marisol: I think that, that was great.
- 53:57Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 53:58Maria Pena: Hello.
- 54:00Maria Pena: like, Maggie's just kind of calmly going behind, and then the scene inside the cop station is like, you know, Vivian's like, resisting, and…
- 54:09Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 54:10Maria Pena: cops, I love that, like, it's really great storytelling right there.
- 54:15Maria Pena: This whole sequence is really good.
- 54:18Tad Eggleston: It is.
- 54:20Tad Eggleston: I, I like… I, I, I say this over and over again, like… one of…
- 54:32Tad Eggleston: The beauties of loving rockets.
- 54:35Tad Eggleston: Like, the beauties of… of…
- 54:41Tad Eggleston: a number of things. Saga, Strangers in Paradise Universe, etc, is that, like… Somehow?
- 54:53Tad Eggleston: It never gets old.
- 54:56Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 54:57Tad Eggleston: You know, everything continues to be brilliant and fresh and…
- 55:03Tad Eggleston: you know, not necessarily the same, but that's okay. You know? Familiar, so that it's still comfortable.
- 55:14Tad Eggleston: you know, I had this experience with, I don't know if either of you read Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oming's Powers?
- 55:23Tad Eggleston: It was like a superhero detective comic.
- 55:26Marisol: I don't think so.
- 55:28Tad Eggleston: it centers around a couple of detectives that work the Powers Homicide Division. So, like, they only work cases that involve.
- 55:38Marisol: Super-powered beings doing bad things.
- 55:41Tad Eggleston: And it ran for, like, 10 years in the late 90s to early… teens, and… and…
- 55:50Tad Eggleston: And it's been gone for, like, 10 years, but they just… they just came back with a couple issues now, and it's like… it's like bumping into your best friend that moved away, and you hadn't talked to them in 10 years, and, like, picking up…
- 56:06Tad Eggleston: Right where you left off.
- 56:09Maria Pena: No clue.
- 56:09Tad Eggleston: You know what I mean?
- 56:11Tad Eggleston: And it's so crazy that you can have that sort of relationship, and I kind of feel like that's…
- 56:17Tad Eggleston: That's what every new volume of Love and Rockets is.
- 56:20Tad Eggleston: So every new volume of Saga is…
- 56:23Tad Eggleston: you know, it's not quite as surprising when they're coming out monthly. It's… though, it's… it is surprising that they can maintain that steam monthly, you know, because making comics on that…
- 56:39Maria Pena: Oh.
- 56:40Tad Eggleston: pace is true.
- 56:41Maria Pena: Could never…
- 56:42Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 56:42Maria Pena: I could never do it.
- 56:44Tad Eggleston: Right, but like…
- 56:48Tad Eggleston: The fact that, like, you can go away and come back, and go away and come back, and it's always…
- 56:55Tad Eggleston: Always wonderful, always brilliant, and always loving rockets, even though, like…
- 57:02Tad Eggleston: It's another place where, where, like…
- 57:05Tad Eggleston: Comics makes a difference, because you can kind of do this in a movie if, like, you… you…
- 57:11Tad Eggleston: Record the sequels years separately with the same cast?
- 57:17Tad Eggleston: But, like…
- 57:17Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 57:19Tad Eggleston: If you read a Maggie and Hopi story… if, like, you replaced the names, and took a Maggie and Hopi teenage story, and turned it into a prose book.
- 57:28Tad Eggleston: And then took this Maggie and Hopi story, and turned it into a prose book, and gave it to two people.
- 57:35Tad Eggleston: I don't think many of them would immediately go, I think these are the same characters.
- 57:43Tad Eggleston: Whereas you can take,
- 57:47Tad Eggleston: late… I actually think of Maggie… I think they're in their early 30s here. They feel early 30s. You can take this early 30s Maggie and Hopi story, and just read this issue, and then go back and read a teenage Maggie and Hopi story. And they're completely different books, but you also know that they're not.
- 58:05Tad Eggleston: Even if they're not labeled.
- 58:07Tad Eggleston: You know, people are gonna look at it and go, oh, wait…
- 58:12Tad Eggleston: And the characters managed to, you know, even when you don't have the stuff in between, they somehow… you can absolutely feel, oh yes, that Hopi would grow into this Hopi. That Maggie would grow into this Maggie, whether you've seen the in-between or not. It's just… yeah.
- 58:32Maria Pena: Yep.
- 58:33Tad Eggleston: Oh, I expect…
- 58:36Tad Eggleston: Really special work. So, Love and Rockets, Volume 2, number 3.
- 58:42Tad Eggleston: And Luba and her family number one.
- 58:45Tad Eggleston: is our, is our next round, hopefully next week. I know I'm good next week. Maria, when are you headed home?
- 58:53Maria Pena: I think I'm good, yeah.
- 58:54Tad Eggleston: soon.
- 58:55Maria Pena: Back to Malta, but that's in January, so I will be in… I'm here, then I'm in El Salvador for a while.
- 59:04Tad Eggleston: Oh, wow, so, so you… this is an extended, extended tour of… of…
- 59:10Maria Pena: Travel America.
- 59:11Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 59:12Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 59:13Marisol: Nice.
- 59:13Tad Eggleston: Well, then we'll have a.
- 59:15Maria Pena: Well, you know, it's a lot of fun trips.
- 59:17Tad Eggleston: Oh, absolutely. It just… it does give us more options in terms of scheduling. If we need to reschedule anything coming forward, we can know that we're all in the same time zone for a while.
- 59:32Maria Pena: Yeah. Okay? Should be…
- 59:36Tad Eggleston: Well…
- 59:36Marisol: Okay.
- 59:37Tad Eggleston: You guys all have a great week, for the Love & Rockets Book Club on 22 panels. We will see you after the next page.
