- speaker-0: Welcome to the Just Us Sisters podcast. Life doesn't come with a manual, so we made a podcast. speaker-3: Welcome to Just Us Sisters Podcast. This is podcast number 28, and we are going to discuss hobbies today, how they've affected our life, how they've maybe improved our life, or maybe the cool people that we've met while doing hobbies. My name is Stacey. I am the youngest of the sisters. My sister Susan is oldest. Cheryl is the second sister, and Shelly is number three. When we talked about doing a podcast on hobbies, what came to mind first? speaker-0: When I was eight, nine and above, I loved baking. And so when I think about hobbies, I think about those times that I went to baking classes. I took German cinnamon rolls to our county fair and won and had one on one time with my aunt's mother in law so she could show me how to do it. It just was a real fun time for me. So when I think of that, when I think of a hobby, I think of baking. For me. speaker-3: Do you still enjoy baking? Does it bring you joy? It speaker-0: Does. I love it. I enjoy it. I enjoy what the the things that you can do with it, you know. speaker-3: Cheryl, what did you first think of? speaker-1: thought that came to my mind was I really like to clean the house and it Needed to break the monotony there a little bit. Ever since I was about eleven or twelve years old, I have really enjoyed video games. We lived down the street from a place called the Goofy Golf. And it wasn't just golfing. It was every video game you could think of. And we got to know the n the owners really well, so if it wasn't busy, he would just let me come down there and play. So that carried on into even high school and college and I still actually play solitaire and spades on the computer. So I think that's one my favorite though is fishing. We Johnny and I both like to fish. We don't get to do it as much as we want. We bought a fishing boat and I keep asking him, When are we gonna get to go? And he said, Well as soon as we don't have any work. And I said, Okay. So we do enjoy fishing together. speaker-3: Yeah. Does I know fishing brings you a lot of joy and peace because you post a lot about it when you do get to go. What's that feeling of when you you first get that bite or think you have a bite? 'Cause most of the time mine's just hitting the bottom or something. speaker-1: I I actually enjoy catching fish, but to be honest with you, it's one of the very few places that I don't mind sitting still and just having my line out, whether it's on a a bobber or we're trolling along and it's just going along in the water. But yeah, when you get that hook, you hook that fish, the fight is fun. I especially also like to fish in the in bay in the bay speaker-3: Yeah. speaker-1: at the coast. Even though you have to pay to fish, it is a lot of fun. And they do all the work and so that's nice. speaker-3: Yeah, that's true. Shelley, what about you? Among speaker-4: As I can remember, I have been pursuing trying to get fluent in Spanish. Some speaker-3: Can you move to Mexico City for like a half a year? Right. speaker-4: I did live in Mexico, with the family and you know, for some it it would be like education, but for me it I'm having to call it a hobby because I'm still not there. speaker-3: What told new bat on it? speaker-4: No propensity toward language? speaker-3: Brandon told us that you have to look at it like a math equation. speaker-4: And therein lies the problem. speaker-3: Understand that. speaker-0: It's algebra, Shelley. It's algebra. speaker-3: Yeah. Yeah. That's why some people pick it up really easy and some not so much. Yep, that's me. Have a very tough time. speaker-0: What's your hobbies, Day? speaker-3: I have a couple of hobbies. When we first started talking I about doing this, I was like, I don't even know if I have any hobbies. But like Cheryl, I love the fish. It is one of the only times that I will sit still. And I think it's cause you are focused on watching your line. So it it grabs you and It's fun when you're catching. If you're not, it can be relaxing but also very frustrating. I love to decorate. I think that I have decorated since I was very young. Even if it was on paper, I remember drawing house plans on paper when I was little. Even with sunken living rooms and I mean going into that much detail. So I love to decorate and I love to not just decorate my house but to help. others decorate theirs as well. And I like to play golf. I picked that one up so I could spend more time with my husband. And that is the most rewarding and frustrating hobby that there is. You can play one hole amazingly and the next it's like you've never played golf before. So you're always learning with it, I guess. So I just talked about picking up golf because I Like to spend time with my husband when he plays and it's a great time for us to spend together. Have y'all picked up a hobby because of your husbands? speaker-0: picked up landscaping. He loves to landscape. He did all the landscaping at our last house, both front and back. And when we built this home, he told the builder, take out the landscaping budget. I'm gonna do it myself. And means him and I. But I love working out there with him. I know sometimes it gets frustrating and it's hot and you're sweaty. But it's just it it's rewarding and he does such a great job planning all the you know how it's gonna look and what goes where and the rewarding part is when it grows and it's beautiful. So in hiking, we both love hiking and hike especially the national parks and just being out in nature and seeing the beauty that God has created around us. that we don't on a normal basis get to enjoy mountains, especially in and rivers, lakes. It's just amazing. speaker-3: That's a good one. Cheryl, what have you picked up because of Johnny? speaker-1: Interestingly enough, hog hunting. It is the most fun sport to do because sorry Pita, we are overrun in the country with hogs and our friends bought a a place and they have given us free rain. We can go in the morning and shoot hogs, and we can go in the evening if we want. I mean within three minutes there's probably thirty hogs. And if you don't hit a hog at that place, you might as well hang it up. You're a bat. speaker-3: Well they tear the land up too. I know. That's why they're it speaker-1: Yeah, yeah. speaker-3: What about you, Shelley? speaker-4: It's not something I picked up because of Andy, but it was a common thread for both of us that, you know, attracted him to me and me to him, and that's traveling. We both love to travel and visit new places, try new food, see cultures that we don't have here and we we both thoroughly enjoy doing that. speaker-3: What hobbies do you currently pursue and what do you enjoy the most about them? You know, Susan, you talked about hiking and landscaping with Tom, Cheryl, hog hunting, which is new. I didn't know that, that you were going with Johnny. So that's pretty cool. speaker-4: Well, up until about a year ago, Cheryl and I both were playing pickleball every single morning without fail. And we both thoroughly enjoyed playing. It was a a time of fellowship with speaker-1: Clip. speaker-4: friends. We would get together early to beat the heat. But it we moved much further from where we were playing and so that was kind of a natural break for me to just not play anymore. But man, I love the sport. I love the camaraderie, I love the fellowship and I really miss it and hope to get back into that in the near future. speaker-0: Yeah, I think that's what what happens is we start in when we're younger we start certain types of hobbies and they j we just kinda season out of, you know, racquetball. We I played racquetball and tennis and jog. I used to jog and I mean, every every day. It was just a part of my everyday schedule. But just like Shelley said, you know, your your body takes a beating on some of these hobbies. And I that's why I love finding things that we can do and we can continue to do. speaker-1: One hobby that I will say that I miss is motorcycle riding. We gave it up about three or four years ago because we were getting too old. I dropped my bike at a gas station and Johnny Lamb Jones, if you know who that is, he was a famous running back for UT. Came over limpin', got got off his bike to come help me pick mine up 'cause I Johnny wasn't with me. And then Susan and Tom, well, I don't know if Susan was gonna get into it, but Tom was gonna get into riding motorcycles and he had a very, very bad accident. So we missed that. I I'm sure you do too, Stacy. Yeah. But we're just riding bikes now in the mornings early and e bikes, not not regular bikes. So you can go twenty miles and and still be okay. You're you don't have to ice all afternoon. So it's kinda nice. You know that speaker-0: was something that Tom and I picked up was cycling. And you just can't live in the city. Well, I'm gonna take that back. You can live in the city and cycle, I'm sure. We just didn't find a safe place to do that. Yeah. It's probably easier to do it out in the country, but I mean we had nice bikes, but it I just felt so unsafe riding around in the city. Did y'all find that to be or even doing e bike? Do y'all find that scary in the city? speaker-4: Houston offers a lot of bike trails, a lot. speaker-0: They do work. speaker-4: Or close to Houston. Yeah. And then you have the transporting of the bikes and all of that. Right. But I do know Houston proper offers a lot of bike trails. speaker-0: Yeah, we have friends that ride them. We had some trails back behind us, but they were a little bit more for mountain bikes. And we had road bikes. speaker-4: Right. Yeah. speaker-0: So speaker-3: Sure, where do y'all vine? speaker-1: ride back in the country behind Bertram, not on County Road three twenty two 'cause it's very dangerous. But back the other direction. So we have a nice little route. It's right at twenty miles. But we have a nice bike carrier so when we're ready we can start going to places. speaker-3: Yeah. One thing that just popped in my head when y'all were talking is it sounds like hobbies come with a season. I mean, think of all of the scrapbookers or or speaker-4: That's one of mine, definitely. speaker-3: Yeah. Did you ever finish one? speaker-4: Did. We you know, you ask how you connect with others in your community. Once a month we would get together without fail. The problem was I like to visit and all these women were putting together entire books and I would finish a page or two. But I had all the supplies, everything because I've been technically scrapbooking since I was little biddy. I came across some photo albums that are essentially scrapbooking From back when I was young and I just have always enjoyed that, but it was definitely a season because one, it it cost, and two, you have to have time to sit down. And once Cherokee got into activities, that just almost became impossible. speaker-3: thing you needed to scrapbook the most is what kept you from scrapbooking. Yeah. It's funny how that works. I was trying to think of other just now, other seasons besides sports where, you know, we have an injury or or it's just too much on our bodies as we age. I hate to even say that. What other ones come with the season besides the scrapbooking? I'm th I'm sure there are people who are still very into scrapbooking. It's become speaker-4: And that cha that shift everything because you don't really have to be around people to do that. Where there was oftentimes 15 of us getting together and sharing supplies and just a great time, but now that it's digital, you can sit in front of your own computer and and just do that by yourself, which is unfortunate because it takes the community aspect out of it. speaker-3: My Facebook is my scrapbook. Except what if what was that the very first social media that went on? My space. What if it I mean, you would lose everything if it just died away. speaker-1: It's coming back. speaker-3: Okay. speaker-1: I was gonna say during the summer months and spring, I love water activities. I love to be in the pool every day, whether it's just floating around, kicking my my feet, swimming a little bit. Every once in a while Shelley'll join me for aerobics, water aerobics. She always comes up with the great routines. I love speaker-3: Send them my way. speaker-1: to live on a lake, but those days are gone too. speaker-3: If you could combine two of your hobbies, what would they be? And how would they work together? I'll go first. So I love decorating and I'm always looking for little businesses to open or to do on the side. And and so I have combined decorating and staging houses. The staging of the houses that I'm into right now is more on giving advice on what to do instead of going in and actually decorating a house that's going up for sale. I would love to do that someday and I feel like I'm kind of getting the materials to do that where I can do that eventually. But that's that I think that would be fun to bring my two loves together. speaker-0: kind of feel the same space. I love drinking coffee. And so it would be fun dream to open a coffee shop with baked goods that I've baked, or even local people kind of connect in the community with women, maybe stay at home moms that love to to bake and want to make a a living out of that. But that would be my dream is to have a little coffee shop, get to meet people, not not your typical coffee shop. Just, you know. speaker-3: I love that Susan. You could have the women that are into the sourdough and and they can make all kinds of different things with their sourdough and eggs and all that stuff. speaker-0: Yeah. My daughter in law, she she makes her sourdough and makes it available to a farmers market and to a little barbecue place in their little town and he takes orders for so that and that just came from a love of baking, you know. speaker-3: Yeah. What about you, Shelley? speaker-4: be a natural because it would combine fluency in Spanish with traveling and actually being able to communicate with people that obviously speak Spanish, which is a large portion of the world. And I think that that would be my ultimate goal is is to be able I want to travel to places that aren't just Spanish speaking, but when I was in a place that is Spanish speaking To be able to communicate with them freely and not rely on just translations, it would be very helpful. speaker-0: I love that Shelly did though, she took her love of learning Spanish and she taught a group of Spanish speaking people English at our church in Houston. And I love that that she took something that was a hobby and something she wanted to do and helped people learn a language. And I mean, not very many people can do that. So Shelly, that was a neat thing. And speaker-4: Or thirty years ago and I just reconnected with with what with one of those students. So that's been kinda cool. speaker-0: That is cool. speaker-3: And Shelly, I would have thought that you would have said planning trips and then the travel, so like a travel agent type, but then I started thinking, she may not like doing that. We just all expect her to do that. So yeah, that's good to know. So has there been a hobby that like an unconventional hobby or unique hobby that you've started and you're like, Mm, this is not for me. Awesome. It's 'cause it's frustrating, right? So frustrating. speaker-0: frustrating. Did not I I thought this this will cause a divorce in my speaker-1: same. I I would go out and I'm saying I'm gonna do this. I'm athletic. I'm gonna be good and I was so bad. So bad that I I just said, you know, I'm just gonna save a lot of money and not do this. speaker-3: It is expensive. It's an expensive hobby. Very. What about you? speaker-0: I would say fishing. I would also say fishing for me. You know, it's not fun for me. No. It is frustrating. It is I love to sit I love to sit on my back porch and watch birds. But to fish, I I cannot stand it. Cannot. So frustrating. speaker-3: What about you, Shelley? speaker-4: the golf and the fishing. Those are not I I could s I can see where there's some peace in fishing, but I can think of other things to be doing that would give me that same peace. And golf, my goodness. You know, I consider myself a little bit of an athletic person and I I was chasing the ball more than I was speaker-3: I've knocked a window out before, so I get that. speaker-0: My grandson plays. I love renting a golf cart and following them all over and watching. Yeah. That is fun. I I know that's not a hobby. I guess it could be. You know, just a a golf watching speaker-3: fan. Yeah. Well there you go. speaker-0: it. I just don't like playing it. speaker-3: Yeah, they're big two different things, yeah. Is there a hobby you've always wanted to try but you haven't yet? Has there is there something that you're like, Mm, I think I'd like that? speaker-1: Me, guard me. speaker-3: Gardening and house cleaning? I speaker-1: really want to on my final house be a gardener. We've never had a nice yard or anything and I never know what plants are in the yard or anything. So I think that that's gonna be one of my final hobbies. speaker-3: have a great app for that, Cheryl. So if you walk by a plant that you like, you can take a picture of it and it'll tell you what it is, if it'll grow in your region, you what kind of soil it needs, how much water, sun. So that's the start of it right there. You should try that. From speaker-0: Me, Stacy, it would be playing the piano. That is that is something I've always wanted to do. I don't really have a place for a piano, but I know that you don't have to have a piano, but just a keyboard and plug it into your computer. And I found this app. Matter of fact, today when I was looking over our hobby questions, I thought, you know, I've always wanted to play the piano and there is some amazing apps for piano teaching and like They said I could be playing my first song in fifteen weeks if I did it three times a week practice. But I thought that may be something I will have to look into. Yeah. Hey, if dad can do it at eighty nine and learn guitar, I can do it. speaker-4: That's what I was gonna say. Dad's proof that you could never be too old to pick up a new hobby. speaker-0: That's right. speaker-3: Kelly. speaker-4: Want to learn how to play mahjong. Is that how you ma speaker-3: Mahjong? Yeah. Mahjong. speaker-4: I think that it would be interesting and that is also community related and I I don't know if I'd like it, but it's something that I'm I'm gonna go take a class and see if it's something that I like. speaker-3: Casey's cousin Happy teaches it. Maybe we can get her to come and teach us how to play. I don't I'm not a big game player, so that's not mine. A lot of the speaker-4: Companies I have seen are bringing in experts to teach their employees how to play. And I think that's really cool. A great opportunity speaker-0: My broker did that, Shelley. He brought in a a teacher to teach all the agents in our office how to play. I I couldn't be there for that, but there were you know, we have thirty something agents and there were a bunch of people there to learn. It is a great community. A a fri a very good friend of ours from church plays every Tuesday morning. And just very committed to a group of people and they buy their tiles and they th but they were playing it w long before Mahjong was even a thing. Yes. speaker-3: So it has exploded. It has. I'm along the lines of Susan. I've always wanted to learn to play the drums. I've asked for drums for probably ten years. Never have gotten and I'm pretty sure I know why. But someday I'm gonna learn how to play the drums. I think speaker-0: Do it. Noah taught himself how to play. Even played in our worship team. Yeah. speaker-3: And go play in worship and nobody'll know what that beat is. I think you have to have a beat before you can that's true. Do that. speaker-0: You know another hobby that would be fun and I and Tom and I took one lesson. We have a we we have three we're supposed to take. But dance lessons. We speaker-3: Cheryl, didn't you do that? speaker-0: did y'all learn anything? We speaker-1: Did. We had fun. It was like two dance courses, but it's hard. speaker-3: What what did you learn like the foxtrot or speaker-1: They they did all. It was free. It was at the the one over at Cedar Park on fourteen thirty one. It's we went two weeks in a row. speaker-0: Yeah, we were supposed to go three weeks in a row. We went once and we learned the two step and we learned some I don't remember I don't remember the other one. We did better on the other one than we did the two step. I just keep wanting to lead and that's the problem. speaker-3: That's probably all of our problems. speaker-4: Andy and I took ballroom dance before we were married, but I guess after he got a ring on me he thought, Okay, I don't have to do that anymore. speaker-3: Fun would that be to go ballroom? speaker-0: Anyway speaker-1: I remember is long short short long short short long short speaker-3: Okay. speaker-0: That would be fun. That'd be fun. speaker-3: So what's the funniest or most embarrassing thing that's happened to you while you've been pursuing a hobby? Is there anything speaker-4: I was on a mission trip in a Spanish speaking country and I was explaining that Jesus died for your and I said pescado and that is fish I meant pecado which is sin. So they were quite confused when I was telling them that Jesus died for their fish. speaker-3: Yeah that too, right? speaker-4: That was several years ago and I do know the difference now. speaker-0: So you're not gonna order sin at a a seafood place. speaker-3: I don't think she would anyways. speaker-0: She wouldn't be in a seafood place speaker-1: This this wasn't funny that it was funny, but it could have been bad. We were out fishing. We were at Georgetown 'cause dad was with us. Just gotten the boat and hadn't really seen if it was gonna be a good fit for us or not. So we got to our fishing spot and did our fishing and then we went to come in and the battery went dead on the boat. And so we had to trolling mortar all the way from where we were to load the boat up. But a storm came in and dad was like, Yeah, we need to get this thing in and I mean that thing was going like five miles an hour across. speaker-3: Did somebody come help y'all? speaker-1: No, we went all the way but I mean we made it. There's no no issues. So those are just part of owning a boat and going fishing. speaker-3: Mine was fishing as well. Casey took me fishing. It was like our second date and it was dusk and I sat down on the ground and he said, Don't sit there that I've seen ants and I'm like, Ants don't come out at night. I don't even know how I had I was in college. I don't know how I had that in my head. Well anyways, they do come out at night and I had hundreds of ant bites. Had to go to the hospital over so speaker-0: Tom and I were working on our landscaping at one of one of the homes we were living at prior to this one. And it we had had probably ten to fifteen truckloads of sand emptied because it it was holding water really bad. And so we were spreading sand, spreading sand, spreading sand. I mean, we had so much sand. It looked like a beach back there. And so it had rained and I was going out the backyard. to get something and I stepped down into the sand, my leg went down almost to my kneecap and I pulled my foot up, you know, trying to get my foot out, and my shoe came off and then just went and I'm I'm like, I don't know where my shoe is. And so we were just Tom and I were out there in the sand, in the mud, trying to find a shoe. So anyway that speaker-3: Sinking sand, right? Isn't that what it's Sinking sand. Yeah. Quick speaker-0: Yeah. Or quick sand. speaker-3: sand. That's what I was thinking about. Hey, we want to hear about y'all's hobbies. What hobbies do you have? What hobbies did you try? And you're like, no way. And what hobbies would you like to try? Maybe try and pick up. Next week on episode 29, we're gonna talk about all things Texas. We are born and raised Texans from 67 years to 57 and There's that's a lot of Texan experience right here and we can't wait to talk about it. Until then, life is messy, meaningful, and better when shared. Thank you for listening. speaker-0: Don't forget to like us. speaker-3: And subscribe. Thank y'all. speaker-1: Bye. speaker-4: Yeah, I'm sorry. I'm gonna have to dad's not answering this guy. Hang on. speaker-0: That would be a good question if we've picked up any hobbies because of our husbands. speaker-3: Yeah, that is. I'll go there next. speaker-0: Okay. speaker-3: Jellies is gonna be raising speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-3: lizards. Lizards. speaker-0: Or watching Viet Vietnamese things. speaker-3: Okay, you good? speaker-1: Yes. I hope that can speaker-4: Hear what he's saying, but we've got to get on. speaker-3: Hey, take a deep breath, Shelley. You're frustrated. Okay. speaker-0: I would jog every okay. speaker-4: Do you need me now? Is he still out? speaker-1: There. speaker-4: Okay. okay. It's gonna be about thirty five minutes though. Okay. Sorry. speaker-0: That's okay. speaker-4: right here. speaker-1: Where am I thinking? speaker-3: I gotta tell y'all, I love you. speaker-1: Did the baby w speaker-4: Thank you, honey. speaker-1: was Dad asking you questions or speaker-0: Ooh. speaker-4: Well just now I gotta notice that I mean it doesn't hold a charge and I completely forgot to plug it in. So all of a sudden I get this message, You're getting ready to die and I was like Hey, can you bring me the b speaker-0: Bad. Because you're trying to talk without opening your mouth. speaker-4: Mouth. Yeah. It die I mean, if it died we would lose it because it has to do its thing. So speaker-1: Well my dog's decided speaker-4: It it may just be short this time and that's okay.
