Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the Joe Rogan recap. You there?
- 0:02Today, we're diving deep into Joe Rogan's conversation with
- 0:06the phenomenal Claressa Shields. This is episode hashtag 1619 of
- 0:11The Joe Rogan Experience. Right.
- 0:13And it's not just a surface level chat.
- 0:14They really got into the mindset of a, well, a truly elite
- 0:19champion boxer deciding to jump into MMA.
- 0:22Yeah, MMA, totally different BS for anyone.
- 0:24Maybe less familiar Caressa Shields.
- 0:26I mean, where do you even start? Well, two time Olympic gold
- 0:29medalist, first American boxer, man or woman to do that
- 0:32back-to-back. She won her first gold at just
- 0:3417. 17 incredible and multiple world titles across different
- 0:38weight classes too. She's dominated boxing.
- 0:41Absolutely dominated. So the big question we want to
- 0:43pack today is why MMA? What's driving her?
- 0:46Exactly. We'll get into her training,
- 0:47specifically at Jackson Wink, her thoughts on boxing versus
- 0:50MMA, you know, fighter treatment, promotion, all that
- 0:53stuff and. Even the potential for it, like
- 0:55Mega Fight down the line, it's really about getting inside her
- 0:58head. She asked herself this question,
- 0:59didn't she? Something like beyond boxing,
- 1:02what am I truly capable of or? Am I as great as I think I am?
- 1:06Yeah, yeah. That was the core of it.
- 1:07For someone who's achieved so much, that drive is just
- 1:11immense. It really speaks volumes.
- 1:13And it wasn't just talk. She signed with the PFL.
- 1:15That's a serious commitment. A.
- 1:17Very serious commitment and interesting how she adapted her
- 1:20boxing mantra. You know proper preparation
- 1:22prevents poor performance. For MMA.
- 1:24It still applies, but the preparation looks totally
- 1:27different. Totally.
- 1:28Which brings us to Jackson Wink. Huge name in MMA gyms.
- 1:33What were her first impressions there?
- 1:35And adapting to kicking. That must been huge.
- 1:38Oh yeah, it sounds like it was both humbling but also really
- 1:42empowering. She went in ready to learn, like
- 1:44a beginner almost. Despite being a boxing legend.
- 1:47Exactly, and she apparently picked up kicking incredibly
- 1:50fast, even landing high kicks pretty early on, like back in
- 1:53December when she started. Wow.
- 1:55And part of that came from fan feedback about flexibility.
- 1:58Yeah, apparently MMA fans pointed out she might need more
- 2:00flexibility. So what does she do?
- 2:02Starts doing yoga, aiming to do the splits by the end of the
- 2:05year. That's dedication.
- 2:06Did they talk about hot yoga? I know Rogan likes that.
- 2:09They touched on it, she hadn't tried it but saw the potential
- 2:12benefit, you know, muscles being more pliable in the heat.
- 2:15So she's open to trying stuff, right?
- 2:17Rogan mentioned that fighter Elena Ngali, known for crazy
- 2:21flexibility, highlights the different physical needs,
- 2:24doesn't it? Absolutely.
- 2:25And then there's the less glamorous side shin conditioning
- 2:29that's huge for kickers. Oof yeah like hand conditioning
- 2:33for boxers but for your shins must hurt at first.
- 2:36She said it did. Feeling the impact after just a
- 2:39few kicks really drove home that difference.
- 2:41And then learning the Superman punch on the same day she was
- 2:44shown it. Incredible, right?
- 2:45Speaks volumes about her athleticism, her ability to just
- 2:49absorb technique. So why Jackson winks
- 2:51specifically more than just reputation?
- 2:54It seems like it was very strategic.
- 2:55She wanted a place focus on technique, on translating her
- 2:58boxing IQ to MMA. She felt her strategy sometimes
- 3:01got overlooked in boxing because her power was so obvious.
- 3:04That makes sense. Looking for that deeper
- 3:06technical coaching, right? And Jackson Wink has that
- 3:09reputation for game planning. And this whole MMA idea wasn't
- 3:12new, was it? Jon Jones apparently suggested
- 3:14it years ago. Yeah, back in 2016 at the ESP
- 3:17Wise, Yeah, Jones saw the potential early, and she was,
- 3:20what, 25 when she talked to Rogan, aware of that window for
- 3:23elite athleticism. That prime window, 2832, is
- 3:27often mentioned, but she was hoping maybe even 26 for her.
- 3:30You see young chimps like Tyson Jones.
- 3:33Exactly. There's an urgency if you want
- 3:35to compete at the highest level in multiple combat sports while
- 3:38you're physically peaking. So she started training just
- 3:41last December right before this chat and the schedule sounds
- 3:44intense. 3 weeks on, one week off at first.
- 3:47Initially, yeah. Then longer stretches of
- 3:49Jackson, wink, just going home on weekends as the fight camp
- 3:52ramped up. Serious dedication.
- 3:54While still planning to box the ultimate goal.
- 3:57Simultaneous champion in both. Which is, I mean, incredibly
- 4:01ambitious, a monumental challenge.
- 4:03But that's Claressa Shields. That's the level she operates
- 4:05on. OK, let's shift gears a bit.
- 4:07Her reflections on boxing itself.
- 4:09She was not shy about her dominance.
- 4:11Not at all that quote. Girls just can't fuck with me in
- 4:13boxing. Pretty direct.
- 4:16And she backed it up with stories, right?
- 4:17Like getting knocked down but still winning.
- 4:19Yeah, showed her resilience and the Christina Hammer fight where
- 4:23she felt it should have been stopped sooner because Hammer
- 4:26was taking too much punishment, it shows her perspective from
- 4:29inside the ropes. The Laila Ali comparison came up
- 4:31to how did she handle that? It felt like she respected Ali's
- 4:35legacy but she was firmly focused on the active fighters,
- 4:38on what she's doing now. Felt Ali's comments from
- 4:41retirement were a bit dismissive.
- 4:44Yeah, understandable. Respect the current generation.
- 4:48And Speaking of different styles, the talk about Anne
- 4:51Wolf. Whoa, yeah, Anne Wolf, the
- 4:53trainer known for that super intense break you down then
- 4:56build you up style. Very different from Shields
- 4:59approach. She seems much more about
- 5:01listening to her body. That story about the Olympic
- 5:03Training Center. Refusing to Sprint through a
- 5:06potential injury and getting fined $500.00 for it.
- 5:09That tells you a lot about herself, awareness and sticking
- 5:12to her guns. It really does.
- 5:13It's about knowing your own limits, not just blindly
- 5:15following orders, especially at that elite level.
- 5:19Right. And that led into talking about
- 5:21her first coach and how that relationship had to change as
- 5:23she matured, needing more communication, more respect.
- 5:27That one-size-fits-all coaching just doesn't work for everyone,
- 5:30especially long term. Exactly.
- 5:32The dynamic has to evolve. It becomes more collaborative.
- 5:35And as her career grew, the need for an entourage, a whole
- 5:39support system, it's not just about the fighting anymore.
- 5:42Absolutely critical logistics promotion business.
- 5:46You need people. But she also acknowledged
- 5:48managing that team is its own challenge.
- 5:51Which brought them to Floyd Mayweather, The ultimate example
- 5:54of career management, maybe. You could argue that his team,
- 5:58his defensive evolution over time, the undefeated record
- 6:02taking minimal damage and making a billion dollars.
- 6:05The business side is undeniable. They talked about the timing of
- 6:07the Pacquiao fight too, right after the Marquez KO.
- 6:10Yeah, highlighting his strategic genius.
- 6:12Or maybe cleverness, waiting for the right moment, maximizing his
- 6:16advantage both in the ring and financially.
- 6:18It's a master class in the business of boxing.
- 6:21But that business side hasn't always served women's boxing
- 6:23well, which was a major topic. Oh, it's definitely the lack of
- 6:27consistent promotion, the opportunities compared to men's
- 6:31boxing or even MMA. She listed so many talented
- 6:34women. Kristy Martin, Lucia Riker and
- 6:37Wolf herself as a fighter. Kalisha W, Amanda Serrano, Katie
- 6:41Taylor Names People should know better.
- 6:44Right. And she feels her higher profile
- 6:46comes from the Olympics, TV exposure, but also her own
- 6:49efforts. She's had to be proactive.
- 6:51Calling fighters out. Showing up at MMA events, she
- 6:54even questioned if expecting female fighters to be too
- 6:57ladylike. Hertz Promotion.
- 7:00It's a fascinating point. Does that expectation clash with
- 7:03the kind of hype and, frankly, trash talk that often sells
- 7:07fights in male combat sports? And then the pay disparity, that
- 7:10must be incredibly frustrating. Yeah, she mentioned her fight
- 7:13sometimes getting better ratings than male fighters who earn way,
- 7:15way more, and the lack of transparency around pay.
- 7:18She even talked about conversations with Showtime
- 7:21execs with the WBC, asking why female champs weren't in
- 7:25commercials pushing for change. You get the sense she feels a
- 7:28real responsibility as the face of women boxing to drive that
- 7:33change. It's not just about her own
- 7:34career. Her PPV experience, while maybe
- 7:37not huge numbers initially, seemed to raise her profile
- 7:41because of the stakes, the betting aspect.
- 7:43It seems like it moving to PPV signals a certain level attracts
- 7:47a different kind of attention, maybe more gambling interest,
- 7:49which boosts visibility online. She saw her social media grow.
- 7:53But you could feel the frustration to having to spend
- 7:56energy on promotion when she just wants to fight.
- 7:59Yeah, that advice from Andre Darrell seemed to stick with
- 8:02her, that she has to be part of making women's boxing equal,
- 8:05even if it's not what she'd rather be doing.
- 8:07This heavy burden. OK, so back to the MMA
- 8:09transition. The PFL offer came because of
- 8:11inactivity in boxing. That was a big part of it, yeah.
- 8:14Boxing wasn't keeping her active enough, and PFL came with a
- 8:17serious, lucrative offer. Interestingly, UFC and Bellator
- 8:22had different initial takes. Right.
- 8:24UFC considered the Nunez fight, which she felt was way too soon,
- 8:28and Bellator thought she was too clean of a boxer.
- 8:31Strange feedback, right? But it shows how different
- 8:34organizations might view a crossover star.
- 8:37PFL seemed like the best fit at the time.
- 8:39A three-year deal, stipend included.
- 8:42That's security, and PFL has been signing big names.
- 8:46Anthony Pettis, Rory MacDonald. Yeah, building a roster.
- 8:50And then there's the Kayla Harrison angle.
- 8:51That's huge. 22 time Olympic gold medalist, same weight
- 8:55class, eventually judo versus boxing.
- 8:58That's a promoter's dream. Massive potential and Shields is
- 9:01smart about it. She knows she can't just box
- 9:03Harrison. She needs the whole MMA game.
- 9:05She seems realistic about the timeline.
- 9:07Two, maybe entering the PFL tournament in 2022.
- 9:10Not rushing it, yeah. Respecting the process,
- 9:12respecting the sport, not just assuming her.
- 9:15Boxing carries her all the way immediately.
- 9:16And she is still boxing alongside this MMA training
- 9:19right though MMA was the priority leading up to that
- 9:21first fight in June. Exactly balancing both, but the
- 9:25immediate focus was getting ready for that MMA debut.
- 9:28They kept the opponent and date under wraps.
- 9:31Standard stuff. Did she talk about feeling
- 9:33nervous starting out? It's good to hear even champs
- 9:35feel that. Oh yeah, she was open about the
- 9:37anxiety venturing into the unknown, and Jon Jones was
- 9:41apparently a big help connecting her with Jackson Wink being
- 9:44supportive early on. She called them twins.
- 9:47That's cool. And her first day grappling the
- 9:50What the fuck am I doing here? Apparently she literally said it
- 9:55out loud and Misha Tate was there and just kind of laughed
- 9:59reassuringly. It sounds like Coach Jackson
- 10:01immediately zeroed in on the ground game.
- 10:03Her biggest weakness? Smart coaching address the
- 10:06biggest gap first. Definitely.
- 10:08And Despite that initial shock, she seems to have found her
- 10:11footing quickly, learning fast. Even on the ground, what was her
- 10:14focus there? Using her legs, creating space,
- 10:17smart defensive tactics for a striker on their back shows
- 10:20she's thinking strategically. It really does understanding
- 10:23strengths, weaknesses, how to learn this new game.
- 10:25But no plans for pure grappling tournaments yet.
- 10:28No, she said. Her focus is purely on MMA
- 10:30application. How does wrestling or jiu jitsu
- 10:33work in a fight? Not an isolation, Very
- 10:35pragmatic. Makes sense and rolling with her
- 10:37BJJ coach she moving from just defense to trying some offense.
- 10:41Yeah, progress. But she also noted the cardio
- 10:44difference. MMA rounds with the grappling,
- 10:47the constant pressure. It's a different kind of tired
- 10:50than boxing. Different engine needed.
- 10:52Has she done live MMA sparring yet?
- 10:55Not full live BJJ sparring with other fighters at that point,
- 10:58but yes to kickboxing sparring, adapting to MMA, distance,
- 11:02defending kicks. Huge priorities.
- 11:04So that first PFL fight was set for June.
- 11:07They were running simulations and training.
- 11:09Yep, trying to replicate fight scenarios, integrate all the
- 11:12skills under pressure. Crucial preparation.
- 11:15She said something powerful too, didn't she, about why she made
- 11:18the switch. Yeah, basically if women's
- 11:20boxing got the attention and promotion MMA does, she probably
- 11:23wouldn't have left. Boxing is her first love.
- 11:26MMA is about adding to the legacy.
- 11:28That really puts the state of women's boxing into perspective.
- 11:31What about boxing Amanda Nunez? She seemed confident there.
- 11:34Very confident, believed she'd win easily even at Nunez's
- 11:37weight in boxing, again emphasizing the difference
- 11:40between the sports. And her own weight cutting.
- 11:42She has limits. Sounds like 147 was maybe her
- 11:46lowest but she wants to maintain her physique.
- 11:48Important point. She's conscious of the health
- 11:51aspects and, as she said, prioritizing her physique as a
- 11:55woman. Did she seem frustrated by how
- 11:57MMA fighters boxing skills sometimes get hyped up compared
- 12:01to her own boxing credentials? A little bit, yeah.
- 12:05You can sense some frustration that her deep boxing background
- 12:08maybe wasn't always given its full weight compared to someone
- 12:11crossing over to boxing. Understandable.
- 12:13Is she excited about the small MMA gloves though?
- 12:15Oh. Yeah, 4 oz versus boxing gloves.
- 12:19She seemed keen to see what her power feels like with those.
- 12:22Talk about power. Her strength training sounds
- 12:24intense. 185 bench press. Pretty solid, focusing on
- 12:27functional strengths, triceps, shoulders, core, her
- 12:31boyfriend's. A trainer helps with that.
- 12:32She felt stronger, but also careful not to lose speed.
- 12:35Right that balance is key and adapting conditioning for MMA,
- 12:38burpees, get UPS, kettle bells. All that stuff plus running,
- 12:42jump rope, those MMA simulations.
- 12:45She trusts her own experience but also got invited to train
- 12:47with Holly Holm. Another successful boxing to MMA
- 12:50transitioner. Smart connection.
- 12:52Diet wise, she's got help. Perfecting athletes same people
- 12:55who work with newness using supplements like melatonin for
- 12:59sleep, some pre workout glutamine, B12 and a sleep ring
- 13:03to track recovery. Very dialed in, even aware of
- 13:06phone addiction affecting sleep. Shows the level of detail
- 13:09required at the top. She also opened up personally
- 13:12about valuing loyalty, trust, respect, being more emotional
- 13:17than people think. And wishing negative words
- 13:19didn't affect her so much. Rogan had an interesting take on
- 13:22that right linking her intensity to her success.
- 13:25Yes, suggesting that emotional drive is part of what makes her
- 13:27a champion, but also touching on the loneliness at the top,
- 13:31finding people on the same caliber.
- 13:33That challenge of finding your tribe when you're operating at
- 13:36that level, dealing with jealousy, negativity, managing
- 13:39expectations from family, friends, that's a lot.
- 13:41And her competitive fire, just hating to lose, that clearly
- 13:45fuels her. She uses the doubters too, like
- 13:47Eddie Hun's comments about an old amateur rival.
- 13:50Sought partly as promotion but also motivation.
- 13:53Like, OK, pay me enough and I'll prove you wrong.
- 13:56She's savvy about the boxing world.
- 13:58Knows the promoter game. Mentioned Don King being careful
- 14:01with contracts. How did she see MMA promoters
- 14:04like Dana White in comparison? Didn't go super deep but implied
- 14:09maybe a different dynamic or reputation, though still needing
- 14:13caution. Business is business.
- 14:14So UFC down the road, maybe after the PFL deal.
- 14:19That seemed to be the long term thought.
- 14:20Focus on PFL for three years, get that MMA experience, then
- 14:24maybe revisit A Nunez fight. She respects Nunez MMA game too
- 14:28much to rush it. And she's aware of the James
- 14:30Tony situation, right? The unsuccessful boxing
- 14:32crossover. Definitely.
- 14:33She specifically mentioned wanting to avoid that by
- 14:36genuinely respecting and learning MMA, not just relying
- 14:39on boxing. Smart.
- 14:40She sparred Cyborg too before the Nunez fight.
- 14:42Yeah your prior since Cyborg was strong, could be good at boxing
- 14:46with focus training, cyborgs, toughness and Muay Thai too.
- 14:49Provides good context. Bellator was interested too,
- 14:51maybe at 145, though she prefers 155, right?
- 14:54PFL 155 felt like the right fit for now.
- 14:57The idea of UFC creating a 155 division came up.
- 14:59Hypothetically, weight cuts are tough.
- 15:01Especially for female fighters, Yeah, it all paints a picture of
- 15:05someone navigating a complex landscape.
- 15:07Absolutely. Weight classes, promotions,
- 15:09skill sets. But her excitement for the MMA
- 15:13journey, her ambition, that really shone through.
- 15:16This whole conversation with Rogan was just a fascinating
- 15:19look inside the mind of a truly elite athlete stepping way
- 15:22outside her comfort zone. Totally.
- 15:24Her dedication to learning MMA, her boxing background, her sharp
- 15:29takes on the fight business, it makes her journey 1 you really
- 15:32have to watch. Yeah, from the training details
- 15:34to the promotional battles to just the psychology of it all,
- 15:38it's a unique perspective. Anyone interested in combat
- 15:41sports? Peak performance?
- 15:42What drives the absolute best? This conversation offered so
- 15:45much. So thinking about it all, what
- 15:47really resonated most with you about her approach and how
- 15:50curious are you to see those boxing skills translate fully in
- 15:53the cage? It definitely leaves you
- 15:55thinking, doesn't it, about the future of women's combat sports,
- 15:58the unique challenges these athletes face.
- 16:00It's a complex world. For sure, if you want even more
- 16:03detail, we definitely recommend listening to the full episode on
- 16:06the Joe Rogan Experience. It's a compelling listen.
