- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: After the third try, we finally have started this podcast.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: I am doing good, man.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Uh it's been a pretty good week to be a Red Raider, if I say so.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: And uh yeah, man, I think I'm just excited to talk about some more tech sports, as always.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: But you know, we need to start off.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: We are officially undefeated at the United Supermarkets Arena.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: A perfect 18-0 home record for the Texas Tech men's basketball team as we take down the Kansas State Wildcats, 73-68.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Tristan, this game was too close.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Indeed.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, I was I was sweating towards the end there, especially in the second half.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, Kansas State just refused to go away, even though we got a good lead, they would just start shooting the lights out once more.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Uh, they were definitely honing in from three all game long.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: So it's hard to keep a team out whenever they're that hot.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, it was kind of an exact uh copy of the TCU game, and we ended up blowing that one in Fort Worth.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, they uh we had a lead at halftime, and then we ended up blowing it.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: And then, you know, if it if it wasn't for Davion Warren and Bryson Williams, uh, this game could have been bad and it could have been ugly uh on Texas Tech Twitter, but we did pull it out.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: I'm happy we pulled it out.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: Uh, wise words from the great Norren Sodiase after the game.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: Every Big 12 win is a good win.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: And no matter the opponent, it's just good to get a win.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: And I I think that's where I'm at right now.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Oh, absolutely, man.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: I I just really, really wanted that undefeated record at home.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: It would have been absolutely disheartening if we lost the very last game of the season at home against you know, a not exactly top Big 12 team.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: No disagree or disrespect to the K-State Wildcats.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: This team is a borderline tournament team.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: I know they're within the bubble talks right now.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Um, and they really, really wanted to beat us because that would give them a pretty dang good boost to get in.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: And I mean, every team wants to go play in March, the dream from the very beginning.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Maybe win your conference and of course go to March Mandis for your chance of winning at all.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: And uh thankfully, we extinguished some of those hopes uh for the Cats.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, it's gonna take a lot for them to get in.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: It's looking like six tournament teams for the Big 12, uh, especially with how TCU's played.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: TCU does have to play three more games still.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: So, you know, that's uh I I'm pretty sure they're in at this point.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: Iowa State has picked it back up after going on a on a downward spiral there for a bit.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: So it looks like they're in, and then the top four, of course, Kansas, Baylor, Tech, and UT are gonna be in the tournament for sure.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, pretty good showing for the Big 12 overall, uh, in terms of tournament hopes.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: But uh back to K-State.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: Um, this is the first time going undefeated since the 1996 season.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: Uh, that's it's really cool, uh, especially first time in the USA with everything that happened this offseason.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, everybody knows the story uh of Chris Beard and and you know, him leaving and Mark Adams coming in, and basically our entire fan base just rallying around Mark Adams and this team uh to create the home environment that we have.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Uh to the just giving our team that advantage that not a lot of teams have uh was massive.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: And that's thanks to the Raider Riot, to the administration, to Texas Tech officials, the coaching staff and players, obviously.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Uh it's it's just really cool seeing this all happen.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, just less than a year after losing, what was your best coach in history?
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely, man.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: I all credit to Mark Adams there for being able to pull that off in his very first year.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: Something Chris uh Chris Beard never ever did at the at TechSech University was make a perfect home record.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: And obviously, like you just said, that's a huge testament to our home crowd advantage.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, we really I think Chris Beard leaving us injected way more energy into the program.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: You know, we we came out with a vengeance, they wanted to come out and prove to the whole country that TechSech isn't going anywhere and that this fan base is something a force to be reckoned with.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: I think it wasn't a hot take for anyone on the media to say that we had the best home environment in the Big 12.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: And I don't think that's a hot take.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, obviously, Kansas consistently has a great home environment because they're consistently very, very good.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, for us to come out of nowhere just swinging and showing that you know we care about this sport too, uh, was just awesome to see, see us support our boys, especially here on senior night.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: It was awesome to see.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Bruce Weber came out after the game and said this was a louder arena than Kansas was this year, and that's coming from the Kansas State coach.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: So, you know, take that for what it is.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: Maybe that's just a jab to their uh their in-state opponent there.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: But uh, no, I think we rival we rival Kansas at this point with our home crowd.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, it was really cool.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: It was cool seeing uh all the seniors get recognized.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, Marcus Santosilva, Kevin O'Banner, Bryson Williams, Davion Warren, and Adonis Arms all uh, you know, being recognized for uh being seniors and and being leaders on this team.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, it was cool seeing Marcus Santosilva hold a picture of his dad because you know, uh he passed not too long ago.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: That was that was really cool.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: Um, and and it was just a cool night overall.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, obviously we could have played better, but um, you know, uh to go out with a win, uh, and and for you know, Davion Warren, Bryson Williams, and Adonis Arms having the games they did, uh, you know, that that was cool.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: That was really cool.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: For sure, man.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: And let's let's take this crowd energy on the road.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, we have plenty of times of the season.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: There's still uh quite a bit of postseason to go.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Um, so let's make sure we we fill in the away stadiums that are left.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: And of course, whenever tournament time comes around, let's make sure we're there and loud.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: We like making ourselves heard.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: Um, and speaking of the seniors, man, this is the Davion Warren game.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: I know Bryce Williams did have a good game, he's been very consistent lately, but this was this was the Davion Warren is putting his stamp on Texas Tech in his time here without question.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I mean, this is a guy who averaged almost 21 points a game at Hampton last year.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: So we know he can score.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: And I'm wondering if he's turned a corner offensively because over the last three games, he's averaging 17 points a game.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, he's finding his stride, he's his shots are going in.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, I know this team has struggled uh for long periods of time offensively, but you know, Davion, yeah, I think he was what nine of 11 this game.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, he was he was fantastic.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: He was knocking down threes, he was driving, making his shots, getting to the free throw line.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, I was really proud to see that because he's been one of our best defenders on the team this season.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: But to see him now get in a groove offensively and start getting uh, you know, 17 plus points a game uh and becoming a reliable weapon on that side of the floor, it it's only gonna help us.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, he he nailed those two mid-range jumpers that just had no business going in, and it just was a great shift in the momentum, putting us right back in it because Kansas State was really hammering us in on the points, so it was good to see us really punch back, especially with those just impossible shots like that.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: That really gets the crowd going.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: And I just it was crazy to see because we just we hadn't seen a performance like that out of him all season.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, obviously he's a very capable young man, but to see him step up when we needed somebody to step up was awesome.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: And that's been kind of the story all season.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, Bryson Williams has been consistent, but everybody else, it's just kind of like here, this guy's game or this guy's game or this guy's game, and uh, I mean, Kevin O'Banner and TJ only took four shots between both of them this game.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, Davion stepped up, Adonis.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, he he wasn't making a lot of shots, but he definitely contributed uh on that side.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: But uh, yeah, it's it's just kind of who's gonna step up besides Bryson because it can't just be Bryson.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: You noticed, you know, he he he kicked K-State's butt in the first half, but then you know, second half adjustments come around.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: You start seeing, hey, this guy's pretty good, we're gonna go double team him now.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: And then that's where our offense starts to stutter a little bit.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Thank goodness Davion Warren stepped up this game, but uh, you know, we really need to figure it out because it can't just be force feed Bryson because teams figure that out.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: We're you know, they're not idiots.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: That's that's a great point.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it was blatantly obvious in the second half that the game plan was to double up Bryson Williams.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: And you and I have we've been saying this for the past couple pods that you know that if Bryson Williams has really established himself as the best player on the team, people teams are gonna start doubling up on him because the in the game or game game film room, they're gonna be like, This guy scores the most every single time, so we're gonna double up on him.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: So it's good to see, like, whenever you're watching this game, you're like, who's gonna be the guy that takes that takes advantage of that that finds that opening to score on them?
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Because that just whenever they double up, obviously that leaves up room for someone else to to step up, and that's what Davion did.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: So I obviously it's gonna be interesting to see how we you know take that to heart in the future, you know, to really spread the offense out and not just rely on one guy because that's just not gonna win you games in March Madness.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: So I mean, we're a balanced team.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, it would be nice to see us act more like it on offense rather than getting stuck up.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and we were missing Kevin McCullough, so that was a big part of it.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: When when Kev plays, our offense flows just that much better.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: He's the main facilitator on this team.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: Uh, he was held out for precautionary reasons.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: I think if it was a big game, he probably would have played.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: But you know, uh, with the quick turnaround from Saturday's game, I'm I'm sure they were just holding him out, making sure that ankle is good for the postseason.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: And then Terrence Shannon was playing with a kind of uh a tweaked back.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: It kind of did that mid-game and didn't play a ton down the stretch.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, injuries, we need to get healthy.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: We've said this all year.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: Um, so hopefully, you know, these guys kind of kind of get it going.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: We have uh a good amount of uh like what five days rest until the next one.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: So, you know, rest, recover, do all that good stuff.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: Uh Daniel Boccio also didn't play this game, still out with that knee that he tweaked uh in practice.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Not sure when he's coming back, but uh we did have KJ Allen step up in his place, taking uh he had 19 minutes, uh, went for six points and eight rebounds.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: He he really made himself belt on the board.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: You know, that's definitely something we're getting worried about without Boccio.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: So it's just awesome seeing a unit of a man out there.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, he is a boulder, man.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: And it's just who who wants to go up against him in the air, honestly.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: And like you said, he's a big dude.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: He is, and I'm glad he stepped up and even got himself some buckets as well, man.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: So it's it's good seeing guys that take advantage of their minutes, and I think AJ Allen did.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: I he kind of gives you hope because you know, we're also you know, my fiance was asking me, like, what does the team next year look like?
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: And you know, a guy like AJ Allen's got to enter the lexicon about it.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: So I I'm glad to see him see the court some more, um, because that that conversation does start happening more as we reach the end of the season.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh, you know, another guy that's that's hopefully going to be on the team next year that has eligibility left is Malik Wilson, who played very good in this game, made the game-saving block, had a couple huge defensive plays like he has had all season.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: But yeah, him, KJ Allen, you're you're looking at guys like Buzo to hopefully get a few more minutes.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: Clarence will probably be here next year.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, and and then, you know, yeah, Baccio and uh McCullough and Shannon are up in the air.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: I still even think O'Banner has another year of eligibility if he wants it.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, I don't expect him to take it, but you know, we could start looking at that as the offseason rolls on.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, I mean it's it's good to get these guys minutes because it gives them confidence, you know.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: Uh I it stinks for uh you know Chabuzo, who who hasn't really had minutes all season.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: And then, you know, you start thinking with those type of players, hey, maybe they want to try you know a change of scenery.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: And it's like, well, you know, just wait one more year uh for for some of these guys to to not have eligibility.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: And but uh yeah, it was good to see KJ Allen get on the get on the court.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: He was uh, I will say defensively, he was lost at times.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Uh you could see towards the end of the game, K-State was kind of uh, you know, weeding him out to get him one-on-one with one of the guards, and and they scored a lot on him.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, he's still got room to work, uh, but but I was really happy with his minutes overall.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: No, I think you put it perfectly there.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: I like seeing the depth out there in games like these.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: It's just unfortunate that you know, even whenever it's games like these and quotation marks in this conference, that's that's you're still going up against a phenomenal team, or at least a very solid team.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: So it's it's good experience, no doubt.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: But it does make you sweat whenever you don't have your uh your a team out there, whenever it's uh coming down the wire like it did.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: But yeah, you're right, man.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: I think you you put a perfect dot on that.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: Um, also, Clarence Nadoni is our version of Russell Westbrook.
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: This guy, uh, he either makes a phenomenal play or just what like one of those plays where you're just like, Clarence, what were you even doing right there?
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: For sure, man.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: He he was making some interesting decisions with the ball.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, he was kind of a turnover machine, you know.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: He he's been that way the last two games.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: He has.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: I don't know if he thinks he's he's trying to facilitate more of that that that facilitator role or you know, trying to be able to you know earn more minutes that way, or trying to, you know, think thinks he's got to put the team on his back with that.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: But it's been interesting to watch.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it makes you scratch your head.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, whatever Clarence is at his best, you know, he's being an absolute snake, penetrating and either kicking out or going through these awesome layups, like you said, a good Russell Westbrook comparison there.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: But I mean, other than that, man, he he's kind of he give you a liability, yeah.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: He can.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: He uh he always plays good defense.
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: That's something that Russell Westbrook does not do.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: Uh, so you know, that part of his game I like.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: He's he's super aggressive.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, uh offensively, when he just he it's like he gets uh cloudy in his brain, and he's just like, Okay, I'm gonna do this and I'm not gonna do anything else.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: And he'll throw that cross-court pass when he doesn't need to, and it's stolen, or he will dribble it off his foot, or he'll carry the ball, or whatever.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: Uh, but you know, he's had some games where he's really stepped up, like you know, the Baylor game, he was fantastic.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: The uh one of the Kansas games, he was really, really good.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: The Iowa State game, when we only had seven players, he was fantastic.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: So uh Clarence is just you get the best of Clarence, you get the worst of Clarence.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, man.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: I love I love what he brings to the team.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: And I do I am excited about him coming back, of course, and taking on a bigger role.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: But he just I think he maybe just get some tunnel vision, maybe just start seeing red and just thinks he can be uh, you know, make these poor decisions and make him look great, but it doesn't play out that way, not against these teams.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, we'll we'll hopefully get those things figured out.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, Mark Adams uh, you know, was was pretty confident and uh in the post-game presser of just you know working on getting the coaching staff right as well as the players right in these next few days off and uh going into the postseason.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: So um I'm excited, I'm excited for for what's to come.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: Uh big game against Oklahoma State on Saturday.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: But I wanted to move on next.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: I wanted to give you a little trivia here, uh a little for you, some questions for you to see if you know this.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: Uh if you don't, it's and it's for the people too, because this is just fun stuff that I noticed when going through uh some of the stats and all that kind of stuff.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Uh so I'll start it here.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: Bryson Williams this season is averaging 16.3 points per game in conference.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: Uh can you, Tristan, name the last three Texas Tech basketball players to average that much in conference?
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Uh the last three.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say yeah, that's one of them.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Keenan Evans?
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: That's one of them.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Um, you got you got me blanking now.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: It's Mac McClung.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: Mac McClung averaged.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: Mac McClung.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: He averaged 17 points a game in conference last year.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was that was surprising.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: That makes sense.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: Are we saying out loud, I guess?
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Definitely surprising to me.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, there's been 10 players uh at Texas Tech that is that have averaged that much or more in conference play uh since 2000.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: Mac McClung, Jared Culver, Keenan Evans did it twice in 17 and 18, Jarius Jackson, Martin Zeno, Ronald Ross, Andre Emmett three times, uh, Andy Ellis and Rayford Young.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: So that's pretty good company to be in, I'd say, for Bryson Williams.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, man.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: It was pretty cool hearing the uh the commentators last night saying that they think he has NBA potential.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: And I know you and I have had that conversation, and you've said that you think Bryson's perhaps a little too young for the traditional NBA route.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: But I mean, I maybe maybe people think that it can happen, or a little too old, probably.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's I'm sorry.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: That's what I meant to do.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: You're good.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: You're good.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: No, yeah.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, I again I could see him having a great career in Europe.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: I could also see him potentially.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: I he made some moves last night where you're just like, this dude belongs on an NBA roster.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: He had a step through move on the baseline that was like watching freaking Giannis.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: And I was like, whoa, hold on.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: This is really good.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, so hey, I I could see him making an NBA roster, but uh averaging 16 points at 0.3 points per game in conference is phenomenal.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: He is really stepped up in the biggest moments.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: Um, another thing that we did last night, we hit 23 wins.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: That has happened how many times in Texas Tech history?
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: That Texas Tech has had 23 wins in a season.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: In Texas Tech history, all right.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: So we we've had a what a basketball team give or take 90 years?
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: A lot, yeah.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: A lot of years.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's 90, but it's a lot.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like 80 to 90, I would I would guess.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go 12, 12 times.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Eight total times.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: No, you're close.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: But eight total times.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: Mark Adams did it in his first season.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: He hit 23 wins.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: Chris Beer did it twice, Bob Knight did it twice, James Dickey did it once, Gerald Myers did it twice, Mark Adams has done it once in one season.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: And it had not been done in an inaugural season before.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: No, not 23 wins.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: I would say that bodes pretty well for our guy.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: And I mean, he also did this, you know, thing called being completely undefeated at home as well.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: That's only happened a handful of times too at Texas Tech.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: But that kind of feeds into my next question because Texas Tech will not finish lower than third in the Big 12.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: The last coach to finish top three in conference in their inaugural season as head coach in their first season.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Who was it and when?
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, I'm gonna say I'm gonna say I'm gonna go with Bob Knight.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna what like what was his first season?
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: The season was like what 2000?
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: It wasn't Bob Knight.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: He had a great record in his inaugural season, but they finished fifth in conference.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: The last coach to finish top three in conference in his first season was Bob Bass in 1969-70.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Okay, a few years ago.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: A few years ago, and he and he finished third in the Southwest conference with a conference record of eight and six.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: So it's kind of cheating a little bit, but he finished third in the conference.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: That was the last coach to do it.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: What what a bloodbat the Southwest would have been at that point.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Good God.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: But um, I didn't you know I didn't check the conference standings, but yeah, what what a what an interesting stat.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: And also kind of shows Stephen and I's age.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry if any of y'all who are uh older pants than us getting frustrated with us not knowing the exact years of some of these guys, but um that that's really interesting, and I think it just comes to show that you know we we are in good hands with Mark Adams, and I don't think we have to uh convince anyone of that anymore, even on the national stage.
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely nuts uh for Mark Adams to do what he's doing right now, um, because it's been it's been a fantastic season.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: Um let's get into some odds here, real quick, before we talk about Oklahoma State, because we are gonna finish top three in the Big 12.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: Yes, it's still a possibility we could tie for first in the Big 12.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: Kansas has three games left.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, two of them are against TCU, one of which they're playing tonight, and then they play again on Thursday against TCU, and then they finish off with Texas at Allen Fieldhouse.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: So they have to lose two of those, and then Baylor has to lose to Iowa State on Saturday for us to get a share of the Big 12.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: Um, it's unlikely, I will say.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: Uh a lot needs to happen.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: I don't really see Baylor losing to Iowa State at home.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: I don't really see Kansas dropping two of these next three.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: So uh you're likely gonna finish second or third.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: All right, and we're so in order for us to get a piece, Kansas has to lose two, and Baylor has to lose to Iowa State, and we have to beat Oklahoma State.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a that's a lot to ask.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, a lot needs to happen for us to get a share of the regular season title.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Um, even if we don't, it's obviously been a great season, but I would I I I'm kind of dropping the idea that we'll uh share for a piece of the Big 12.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, and that those those hopes kind of started shrinking away a bit when we were dropping these uh road games that we probably shouldn't have.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: Um, because you know, with to win the Big 12, you have to be on at all times, and you you cannot drop the games you're not supposed to drop.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: So, and Kansas looks phenomenal this year.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: They're gonna go far in the tournament, most likely.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: And so I I I I I'm not mad about it.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: You know, obviously, you want that trophy, but for year one of a new coach, how could you possibly be disappointed about this?
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: You know, he wouldn't he sat out and did everything that he should have done and way more.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: So it's just yeah, I hope no one's disappointed with the fact that.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: We're not going to get the Big 12 trophy.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: Most likely.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: And it's it's cool to get your conference, you know, to win your conference.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: It's really cool.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: But it's ultimately not the goal.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: You know, the goal is to get a good spot, good seating in the NCAA tournament, and move on from there and go win the whole damn thing.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, I as we both know, uh, or we both think on this podcast, the conference tournament does not matter.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: I would almost rather lose in the first round and give our team some rest before the NCAA tournament.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: Uh, I know some people want to keep winning so we can get better seeding.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: I get it.
- 22:37SPEAKER_02: I get it.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: You know, you want to end up in Fort Worth.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: I think that's pretty far-fetched as of right now, uh, because you have Baylor that's above you, uh, and you have uh a few more teams that would also want to be in the Fort Worth region above you right now.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: So, you know, uh at this point, I think you're looking at a three seed for the NCAA tournament, uh, if you're Texas Tech, which is not a bad thing.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: We were a three-seed in 2019 when we went to the championship game.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: So it's just kind of luck of the draw, hoping you get a good set of teams in your region.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: You know, you're gonna you're probably not gonna be playing in Fort Worth.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: So, you know, our the good thing is our fan base travels, and whether we end up in San Diego or Chicago or wherever, we're gonna have some tech fans there and they're gonna be loud because that's where our fan base is.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: So at this point, I could run through a bunch of different scenarios.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: I think I'm just happy to be where we're at right now, and I am not worried about seeding.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: We'll see what that happens on on selection Sunday, and we'll see and we'll go from there.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Man, talk about where our program is at whenever we're talking about being having a three seed is a disappointment.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's an insanely high seed.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: That's that's that's stupid high.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: And for a for the program we have historically, that's astronomically high.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, I'm not disappointed at all.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: I and I think it's obviously, you know, I'd rather be able to survive in advance anywhere.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: You know, obviously, I'd like to have more fans there, but I think this team is built to be able to get past the first rounds, so I'm not too worried about it, especially when we're with three seed.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: So uh man, it's it just shows how awesome we are right now.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: So and I don't know if I could put any more intelligent way.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, the state of our program, we're in a really good spot right now.
- 24:22SPEAKER_02: And for us to be even talking about two seed versus three seed, or uh, you know, we need to win the Big 12 if this happens, and this is just awesome, it's awesome to have, especially for us coming in in 2014 where we weren't expecting anything from this basketball program.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: So we were just hoping to make the tournament.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: So now we're in such a good spot and we're fighting our butts off, and we just have a really good team this year, and we're gonna be fighting with no matter who we play, whether we get Gonzaga as our one seed, whether we get uh Arizona as our one seed or Purdue or whoever, like we're gonna put up a fight because that's what we are, and that's the culture that Mark Adams and Texas Tech have right now.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we don't stop grinding, the defense never rests, as Mr.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: Rothstein would say.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: So and defense travels, baby.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes, it does.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: Um, we could still jump up to a two seed.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: We'd have a we we're technically the first three seed, I think, right now.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: So if some teams drop a couple games here, we could potentially get a two-seed.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: I'm not saying it's impossible, but uh what I'm expecting is Texas Tech to end up at a three seed on selection Sunday, which I am very much not mad about.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: No, neither am I, and that'll be a fun uh episode to record for sure.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: Um, anything else to talk about with these odds and such, or do we got Oklahoma State now?
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: No, I think let's talk Oklahoma State because it's our uh season finale in Stillwater.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: And as you said before we opt on this podcast, it's Oklahoma State's just flat out season finale.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: Like there's there's nothing past this.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: You said they're not even going to the Big 12 tournament.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: No, yeah, because of the NCAA uh whatever the thing that the assistant coach did at Oklahoma State.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: It's ridiculous.
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: Everybody thinks it's ridiculous.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: They are not allowed to participate in the postseason this year, which means they are also not allowed to participate in the conference tournament because that's considered postseason.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: So uh this is going to be Oklahoma State's last game of the season against us on Saturday.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: And they would be a tournament team, which is, you know, or I don't know, they'd be on the cusp of being in the NCAA tournament this year.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: So, you know, this team is going to be motivated to win this game.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: It they have a senior in uh Ice Likely uh on senior night.
- 26:37SPEAKER_02: The guy's been with the program through a lot of turmoil, and uh for him to go out, I'm sure they are going to be motivated to win this game uh in still water.
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: It's going to be tough for Texas Tech.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, going to the spotcast, you said you didn't you do not think we're going to win this game.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: And you don't like walk through why.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: I don't because I think they are so, so motivated to win this game.
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: And they always bring it.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: You know, I uh we played them really good in Lovick and we kicked their butt a bit, but you know, this team is scrappy, and they played Baylor really tight in Stillwater.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: They had a couple really close games uh against UT, I believe, in Stillwater.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: And it's just uh it's it's a good team.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm not, you know, I'm not gonna uh talk about Oklahoma State without calling them, you know, at least decent.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: They're not they have some real talent on this team.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: Uh some former five-star players are here.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: Uh Mike Boyden, I I like Mike Boyden.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: I think he's a uh decent coach.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: I think he's a good person, and I think that's why people kind of overrate him a little bit.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: Um, as a as a basketball coach, I think he's a he's a great dude, first and foremost.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: But as a basketball coach, he's kind of underperformed a bit.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, he did have the number one overall pick last year and didn't really do much with it.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, but you know, uh Oklahoma State is a talented team that can sneak up on you and when motivated, uh, can can get you can get you on any night.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: I just but that kind of just sounds like pretty much any team of the Big 12 as well, though.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: You know, it does does that does that make them unique in that sense of the or do you think they are just a step up better than most of the teams of the Big 12, like what that you know that we're usually talking about?
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Well, they're six and eight in conference, you know, versus an OU or a Kansas State who have lost, yeah, who have lost their fair share.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Um, so uh they beat, they've had some really good games, they have some good wins uh this season.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: And they're the difference, I think, between Oklahoma State versus say an OU or a Kansas State is the just sheer talent that they have.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: Guys like Avery Anderson, Ice Likely, even uh Mousa Sise was a former five-star guy who can block any shot in the world, and then they have the brothers.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: I I'm I'm blanking on their last name right now, but uh the Boons, uh Caleb and something else.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: But uh they have a they have a really good team.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: Uh they just haven't really put it together, and obviously this season has been kind of a wash for them since they're not allowed to participate in the postseason.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, if you're looking at this team in a different situation, I think that they would I I think that they would be a tournament team.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: I I just I think he I'm kind of kind of more on the side of I think he might be putting too much stock on them being so emotionally invested in this game because you think it's because it's the last game, especially for the seniors.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: Obviously, you want to play hard for your seniors, but I don't even think they'd be playing even harder if this was for a bid for the Big 12 tournament.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, not the Big 12 tournament, the uh the March Madness, you know.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: I I just because I don't think the crowd will show up that well either, you know, because I'm sure a lot of fans you think they will.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they've they've actually shown up pretty good this season for having you know for having no reason really to play.
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: Uh they've the Oklahoma State fans show up, and that arena is weird, it gets loud.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, I I don't know.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: And it's and it's you know, Ice likely has been a guy on this team that has been through the ringer with Oklahoma State.
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: I remember when he was we were in the running actually to get him, uh uh you know, five years ago when he was a freshman.
- 30:11SPEAKER_02: But uh, he's been the backbone of that roster.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: And for them to have senior night for him in the last game of the season for Oklahoma State, no matter what happens, you know, and this is a weird comparison, but it's like I I don't know if you've seen semi-pro, but it's literally the whole concept.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, at the very end where they're like fourth place, fourth place, you know.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: That's it's that weird sort of thing, and they're gonna be motivated, even though it's not really worth getting motivated for, but they're going to be motivated.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, you you've you've definitely sold me, you know.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: I like I say, you know, every every Big 12 game is a battle.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh I I do hope we can cap it off with a win.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: You cap cap off the regular season with a win, and obviously that puts us into the odds of either time for second or time for first in the Big 12.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: So I'm all I'm all for that, of course.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, that it's it's gonna be an interesting game to see, you know, I'm gonna it's gonna be interesting to see how the energy shows up for both teams, uh for both teams, obviously, especially for Oklahoma State.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: So that's that's interesting, man.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: It's gonna it's a weird way to cop off the cap off the season.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, definitely.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, we haven't been the best on the road, so that's another reason to kind of think uh, hey, maybe we might drop this one.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: But uh either way, it's okay if we drop this one, uh, you know, to be honest, because you really, if you don't win this game, and maybe you don't win your first conference tournament game, I guess you could fall to a four seed, but I think at this point you're pretty much locked into a three seed.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: So you can drop this one and win a game in the Big 12 tournament and you're golden from there.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: So I don't know.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: Uh, I don't know if our guys are gonna be able to kind of uh just get it going because we've struggled on the road this season.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: Well, hey, we gotta beat Xerox for you.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, we can't just let them get away with this, you know, ban or not.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: I don't feel sorry for them.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: Let's let's go, let's go get them.
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: It's true, it's true.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: Um, but either way, it's gonna be fun.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, we get Kevin McCullough back and healthy.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Terrence Shannon, hopefully rest that back and uh get back to being Terrence Shannon, what he was a few games ago.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: And we'll see, we'll see.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, we can cap the season off.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: The good news, and I was really struggling with this when we were struggling against Kansas State because it was in the back of my mind.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: And it's like, can UT catch us?
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: Can UT catch us in the conference?
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: I do not want to tie with UT.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: And the good news is there's no possible way that is gonna happen, even if we lose to Oklahoma State.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: We're two full games above UT right now, so we're going to finish better than Chris Beard.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: That does not suck.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: And thank you to the Baylor Bears for uh, you know, tapping off the flan the last game is an L.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: They sent it off the flan with an L.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: It's an L of a building, and I'm glad they're sending off as such.
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: Um, and I don't even think the the UT Twitter posted the score either.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: No, they did.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: One of those they hate posting scores whenever they're gonna swear.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: They don't like it.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: I feel like they get roasted on pretty much every tweet they send anyway.
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: But all they did, all they did was a gratitude to everybody that has you know helped fill up the Frank Irwin Center.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: So, really, they were thanking us a little bit.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: They were, yeah, you're welcome.
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: For that game in in mid-February where we bought out their arena and uh made it a 50-50 crowd, you know.
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: So shout out to an atmosphere.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: Shout out to UT Twitter for thanking us for buying.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: Y'all are the all the best.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: And and it was it was funny.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, we kind of glazed past this uh game and the TCU game we unfortunately dropped, but it was funny how even the broadcaster was like, it's this is Lubbock in here right now.
- 33:37SPEAKER_01: So I'm glad we got to bring that to the Frank Irwin Center as well.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: You're welcome.
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, seriously.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: So hopefully we don't get another uh game like TCU.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: But uh the thing about those late season losses, too, late regular season, I should say, is they can kind of wake you up a little bit, they can kind of say, Hey, we got to change some stuff, we can't coast through this, and you know, we may have gotten uh a little big head there because we won a good amount of games, a few big games in a row, Baylor and UT.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: You know, so uh maybe it just kind of brings you back, brings you back to Earth a little bit and says, Hey, you know, we got to keep grinding.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: This is this is a long season, we still have huge goals ahead of us, and uh just because we beat UT Baylor, Kansas, it doesn't matter, we gotta go win the whole thing.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: TC was so heartbreaking because it was truly one of those games where you ran out of time.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: Because Bright, whenever Bryson hit that barrel almost a bust for Peter 3 to go over in time, kind of stunk.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: But um, you know, it's kind of funny saying like tease the TCU fans rushing the court as they should.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: You just upset a top 10 team at home and you're unranked.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's just it's just crazy to see that's Texas tech, you know, that's getting uh rushed against.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: It just we're we're we're the real freaking deal, and it feels so good to be so.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: That's a good twist.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: Way to twist that's about me, not them.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: This is about my ego, not theirs.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: Yes, we we've successfully twisted the TCU loss into a good thing.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: So you're you're welcome, everybody.
- 35:05SPEAKER_02: Did you have anything else on basketball?
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: No, man.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: I think I just looking forward to uh wrapping up the season.
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: You know, this is about the time where I'm ready to go ahead and get to March Madness.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: You know, it's what we've been waiting for uh all year, literally, year.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: So um I'm looking forward to seeing what this team does.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: I love the way we've been performing the postseason lately.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: So it's uh it's an exciting ride.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to see where all the chips fall.
- 35:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, selection Sunday is gonna be really fun.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, we got some cooking for y'all uh for that episode.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: Um, but let's move on.
- 35:34SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech Baseball update.
- 35:36SPEAKER_02: Um, we swept Kent State uh for nothing in Lubbock.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: Uh Kent State, I do not know how good they are, but we swept them, and that's cool.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, they they definitely scored some runs on us as well.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: We're still trying to figure out the defense right now.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: That pitching situation obviously needs to you know be worked out.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: Uh since the tournament, we've been undefeated at home so far.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: And uh, so that that's you're not gonna complain about that, you know.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: Like we always say, you know, Tim Tadlock, he does not take the uh preseason lightly.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: You know, we we play a lot of good teams.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: So uh if these are the tune-up games, I hope we're tuning up.
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: It looks like uh one thing that did come out of the series, it looks like Brendan Gurden's gonna kind of be your go-to closer here.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: Uh, he had a really good series against Kent State.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: Uh Jace Young hit his first homer of the season.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: That's always fun to see.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, and we hit, I think we hit like three total home runs during this series.
- 36:30SPEAKER_02: So that's just nice seeing the uh the bats connect and and get that ball way out of there.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: We got some hitters, and I'm uh glad to see we're finally getting that on as well.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: Uh, update as of right now, we are recording this uh Tuesday afternoon.
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: They are playing Dallas Baptist right now.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: It looks like we're still down two to one in the middle of the seventh inning.
- 36:52SPEAKER_02: So hopefully we can pull this one out.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: We beat Dallas Baptists earlier in Lubbock.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, this time we're playing in Dallas.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, hopefully we get another dub and keep this win streak rolling.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: Just need a seventh inning stretch and we're back in it.
- 37:05SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Did you like that?
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: Was that I liked it?
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: That was that was very pretty.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: Baseball.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: Baseball.
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: We're big baseball guys over here, as you can tell.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: Um, no, I'm sure as the season goes on, I'll start getting more players down and knowing who the heck's on this new team.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, or games like S Blus.
- 37:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'll start watching more to be honest.
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: I'm so invested in basketball right now that it's hard for me to get like in baseball mode.
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, hopefully we'll be getting y'all a little better analysis uh of baseball season as it goes.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: Especially once we hit the Mississippi State game.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: That's when things really start picking up speed.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's gonna be fun against the reigning national champs.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I hope you can get there.
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: Um, do you have anything else, man?
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: Dude, no, I think it was kind of a shorter episode today.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was very basketball focused because I mean this is we're in that you know peak basketball time, so yeah, it's kind of hard to talk about anything else.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 38:03SPEAKER_02: Uh Big 12 tournament coming up soon.
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: That's you know, it's always fun.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: I I don't really care about it all that much.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech has been historically horrible in it.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: So, you know, I'm not expecting much from this Big 12 tournament.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: If we win a few games, awesome.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, we uh can get that two seed.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: If not, it's all good.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: We're gonna we're gonna show out no matter what in this tournament.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: Um, looking forward to selection Sunday.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: Uh shout out Suns Up Guns Up Podcast.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: That is your new uh podcast here on the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.

- 39:01SPEAKER_02: For sure, for sure.
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: So, all right, man, let's finish.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: Song of the week.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: What do you got?
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: All right, song of the week.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna do Mike and the Moon Pies.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: They're definitely a Texas band that's picked up more steam these uh past few years.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: They're definitely delivering that country sound a lot of people have been missing.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, they've got a really fun sound about it.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: It's just it's it's they're really their music's nothing but fun.
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go with paycheck to paycheck.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: Mike and the moon pies.
- 39:26SPEAKER_03: I'm living paycheck to paycheck.
- 39:28SPEAKER_03: One quarter time.
- 39:31SPEAKER_03: I just dropped my juice and came home myself and live.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: What a fabulous name.
- 39:38SPEAKER_02: Dude Rights, that's great.
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: It's a great band name, dude.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: If you when's the last time you had a moon pie?
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: Dude, I it's been a long time, but I could slay a banana moon pie right now.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: So I'm I don't think I've ever tried the banana one.
- 39:52SPEAKER_02: And I that's my fave.
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: I don't think I've had a moon pie in probably 10 years, but I see them all the time for some reason.
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: I I work at a like I work at a I have my grocery stores that I go into every day, and I see that literally every Rouse's, and y'all are most of y'all are in Texas, so y'all don't really know what the hell Rouse's is, but it's a grocery store chain in Louisiana, and like every one of them has like a massive moon pie display going on right now, and I don't know why, but I'm always tempted to grab one.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: If they're they're a bit of a bigger deal of the deep south, and I mean why why are you hesitating to grab one?
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: They're like a buck, you know.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: They're out of Tennessee, so I I could it's definitely a regional thing, but they're still good.
- 40:35SPEAKER_01: They're they're they're they're they're very delicious.
- 40:37SPEAKER_02: I have a wedding coming up, dude.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: I gotta fit into my stuff here in a in a year, man.
- 40:42SPEAKER_02: I can't be buying movies.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: I feel that every agreed.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: But uh, all right, man.
- 40:49SPEAKER_02: That's a that's a good choice.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: I look forward to hearing that one because I sure as hell have never heard that song before.
- 40:54SPEAKER_02: So um, my song of the week, because of the undefeated home streak, I think we're at 20 total games at this point, but 18 and 0 this season.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: My song of the week is home by Dirk Spenley.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: Great song.
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: Uh Dirk Spenley, strong artist.
- 41:11SPEAKER_02: Uh, haven't heard a lot of his new newer stuff, I guess, but uh this is kind of an older one.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: It's a good song.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, and home home is just great.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: We're we're great at home.
- 41:20SPEAKER_02: The USA uh is uh just a force to be reckoned with here at the Big 12.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: And uh that's why my song of the week is home, Dirk Spenley.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: Great pick, man.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: Man, also kind of America right there.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: And we haven't we haven't lost at home in over a year.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: It's kind of kind of crazy.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, dude, good pick.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, the guy's the guy's got a solid histography for a Nashville guy, he hasn't really fallen off.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: It's like he hasn't made anything.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: We're like, holy crap, that's sucks.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: That's hit the radio.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: So you can't say the same about a lot of the others.
- 42:03SPEAKER_02: That's true, that's true.
- 42:04SPEAKER_02: Well, you know more about the country music scene than I do, but I know that this song's good and I needed something with home.
- 42:09SPEAKER_02: So, and you took the the bubbly and uh and Blake Shelton home, so I had to pick something else.
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: So that's what I'm saying.
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: That was a good Christmas song, but um, all right, man, we're gonna end it like we always do with some plugs.
