- 0:10Bible says, in Acts 1, 1:3 That he being Jesus presented himself
- 0:18alive to them after his suffering by many proofs.
- 0:24Appearing to them during forty days.
- 0:26And speaking about the kingdom of God, So essentially here in
- 0:30this one verse at testifies, to the fact that after Jesus Christ
- 0:34died was buried and rose from the grave, he appeared to his
- 0:38disciples. He appeared to many during a
- 0:40period of 40 days. Speaking about the kingdom of
- 0:43God and all that did was build more testimony and more validity
- 0:48and more eyewitness accounts of the fact that we serve a Christ
- 0:52that's alive. So turn with me to Luke chapter
- 0:5524 because there are specific incidences where we see Jesus in
- 1:00his resurrected State meeting these people and each account
- 1:05that's recorded in scripture, is not just for us to see the proof
- 1:08that, yes, he did appear to certain individuals, but there
- 1:12are lifelong lessons for us as Believers to know how to
- 1:15associate, and to relate in to walk with this resurrected
- 1:18Christ. And one of those stories is
- 1:21found in Luke 24:13 and you know this story.
- 1:26If you've read this chapter before concerning two disciples
- 1:29that were walking rather to the road on the road to Emmaus.
- 1:35And so, in verse 13, he says that very day, two of them were
- 1:38going to a village named Emmaus about, seven miles from
- 1:42Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these
- 1:45things that happened. While they were talking and
- 1:48discussing together, Jesus himself Drew near and went with
- 1:53them. But their eyes were kept from
- 1:56recognizing him and he said to them.
- 1:59What is this conversation that you are holding with each other
- 2:02as you walk and they stood, still looking sad The contacts
- 2:09to this specific portion of scripture is this is that the
- 2:13woman that followed Jesus came to his tomb.
- 2:16They saw these angels, these angels testified that Jesus was
- 2:20not here, but he has risen and they ran back to the rest of the
- 2:24disciples to tell them of this news.
- 2:28But it says, in Luke 24. Verse 11, but these words seemed
- 2:34to them as an idle tale. And they did not believe them.
- 2:40so here, these ladies that heard from angels, He's not here for,
- 2:46He Is Risen and Mark's gospel. It tells them and us that the
- 2:52angels and fact said, go to Galilee where Jesus will
- 2:56actually meet with you so he reveals to them.
- 3:01Through the Angels, I'm alive meet me in Galilee and so these
- 3:05faithful disciples run to the rest of the disciples and they
- 3:08say, Jesus is alive. Jesus is risen.
- 3:12We saw angels that testify to this and he said you guys lost
- 3:16your mind. And instead of going to Galilee
- 3:21two of them that were not one of the eleven, but two of them that
- 3:25were in the group. They don't go to Galilee, they
- 3:28walk towards Emmaus. Its eyes are walking to Emmaus.
- 3:33The Bible tells us that they were discussing these matters
- 3:37and verse 19 to 24. We don't have to read it but
- 3:39it's it tells us the subject of their conversation, they were
- 3:42testifying and they were talking and they were wondering what
- 3:47happened to Jesus. We put our hope in Jesus.
- 3:52We put our trust in Jesus and he dies and it's the Talk of the
- 3:56Town and moreover. Now the Mary's come and they
- 4:01tell us that he's not even in the Tomb.
- 4:06And so they heard that Jesus was alive, but they were walking and
- 4:10disbelief. They were walking and pain.
- 4:15They were walking and sadness. They were walking with a heavy
- 4:19heart. They were burdened.
- 4:27That is not how we ought to walk.
- 4:29If we understand that Jesus is Alive.
- 4:32But that is the reality of many people and you might be that
- 4:35person here this morning. You heard and you sang that
- 4:39Jesus is alive, but you're walking with grief.
- 4:44You're walking with a burden heart, there's something
- 4:47weighing you down and you're not walking in the reality that
- 4:49Christ is indeed alive. It's information.
- 4:55It's news, but it's not a reality in your heart.
- 4:59And a lot of people walk like that.
- 5:00Today they have pain, they have questions there in the dark and
- 5:06they wonder if this Jesus really is alive.
- 5:10Why can't I sense his presence? Where's the direction and his
- 5:15leadership in my life? What am I supposed to do now
- 5:20that I'm in this specific season.
- 5:23Where? Yes, I heard that he's alive,
- 5:24but I don't sense that he's alive.
- 5:32And sometimes people walk like that, and you might be walking
- 5:34like that right now. You don't senses realities.
- 5:41You don't sensors leading. In fact you've been wondering
- 5:44probably Lord, I'm in so much pain.
- 5:48Where are you? I'm in so much trouble, where
- 5:53are you? I've heard of you but now I
- 5:58really need you. And it seems like you're not
- 6:00here and I don't understand because I heard that you're
- 6:03alive. We have to understand verse 15
- 6:09and 16 while they were talking and discussing together.
- 6:12Jesus himself Drew near and went with them.
- 6:19And their eyes were restricted from seeing him.
- 6:24In the midst of, that pain, in the midst of that grief, in the
- 6:27midst of that doubt, in the midst of the disbelief, Jesus
- 6:30was with them. Jesus was walking with them
- 6:35though, they could not see him. Jesus could see them and hear
- 6:40them though they could not recognize him.
- 6:44Jesus was in fact in their presence though, they could not
- 6:49sense him. and that's a truth that you and I need to be
- 6:53comforted with That whether if you're in that season right now
- 6:57or you will maybe walk into that kind of a season, where you
- 7:00don't sense him and you don't understand his leadership and
- 7:03you don't know why you have this pain when in fact he's alive
- 7:07trust that he's with you. He's walking with you.
- 7:11He hears you, he's there, he understands.
- 7:19But the question is, why wouldn't you just reveal himself
- 7:21right away? I mean Jesus you could have
- 7:24saved so much time if you just appeared to them and said, hey
- 7:27it's me. I'm risen.
- 7:31Hey, it's me. No need to worry anymore.
- 7:34Why would Jesus cloak himself in a way where they could not
- 7:37recognize him? Because these two disciples need
- 7:42to learn a valuable lesson and it's a lesson for us as well.
- 7:45Turn with me in the same chapter 2 verse 24 and 25 to 27, I'm
- 7:49going to read from 25 and he said to them, o foolish ones and
- 7:53slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.
- 7:58Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these
- 8:00things and enter into his glory and beginning with Moses and all
- 8:05the prophets he interpreted to them.
- 8:07And all the scriptures, the things concerning himself.
- 8:11So here, these doubting disbelieving disciples and pain
- 8:15and grief, probably the lowest point in their lives
- 8:17experiencing so much disappointment.
- 8:22And instead of Jesus, miraculously revealing himself
- 8:25to these disciples, you know, what he wants them to do.
- 8:28Put their faith in the scriptures.
- 8:33Christ. Puts the scriptures as the
- 8:36highest Authority Christ, reveals the power of the word of
- 8:40God. That when we walk in those
- 8:42seasons of our life, where we can't sense him, we cling to the
- 8:45Bible, we cling to the word of God, we cling to what is
- 8:50revealed in the scriptures. Instead of just revealing
- 8:53himself, he wanted him to see that the anchor of their Hope
- 8:57was found in the written word of God.
- 9:00Do you see this? He wants to show them the
- 9:05authority and the power that is found in the scriptures.
- 9:10So that in any season, when we feel like we're walking in
- 9:13darkness, when we don't sense him, we are to understand
- 9:18through his word. He is alive.
- 9:21We are to understand and Hebrews 13 Verse 6.
- 9:23The Lord is my helper. Why shall I be afraid?
- 9:27What can man do to me? We are supposed to understand
- 9:31Matthew 28 verse 20 behold. I Am With You Always to the very
- 9:35end of age. We are to cling to the word.
- 9:39This is what Jesus is teaching. Them.
- 9:42And this is why. One of the main reasons, so many
- 9:46Believers fluctuate, in their faith.
- 9:53Because their roots are not deep in the scriptures, they're
- 9:57dependent upon their emotions. There are dependent upon other
- 10:02people overly dependent. They are swayed by news, back
- 10:06and forth. And Christ is saying, you need
- 10:08to be anchored in the truth of the word of God.
- 10:13The resurrected Christ, reveals to them.
- 10:16Trust, what's already been written?
- 10:20And walking with the resurrected Christ is greatly dependent upon
- 10:23abiding in his word. Get in the scriptures.
- 10:28That's the lesson. We need to learn as Believers as
- 10:30we're walking with this resurrected Christ.
- 10:33He does not remove the scriptures as second in place.
- 10:37No, he upholds and it says, You must walk with this word in
- 10:41order to walk with me as a resurrected Christ.
- 10:43But there's a lesson even here for those who don't believe in
- 10:46the resurrected Christ. Those in here that made doubt
- 10:49that Jesus is, in fact alive. Do you know what Jesus
- 10:53challenges you to do if you doubt the resurrection?
- 10:56Go to the scriptures. Go to the Bible, go to the Old
- 11:01Testament as he did and find out that Jesus Christ, fulfilled,
- 11:06hundreds of prophecies thousands of years before his Incarnation
- 11:10and realized that this book is not a fairy tale.
- 11:14I realized that this book is a library of testimonies with one
- 11:19central theme, as we spoke about on Friday, Jesus Christ, and him
- 11:22crucified and raised from the dead.
- 11:27So if you're asking here, if you're a doubt, or if you're a
- 11:29skeptic, and you're asking God for a sign.
- 11:31If you're asking God for a miracle, if you're asking God to
- 11:33appear in your room, somehow, You know what Jesus says about
- 11:37that kind of thinking, he says it in one way, because Jesus
- 11:40can't do anything. But this is how much he upholds
- 11:42the scriptures. There's a story in Luke chapter
- 11:4516 of a man who goes to hell. And he's talking to Father,
- 11:51Abraham and he says, Father Abraham, I have brothers that
- 11:55are still alive. Let me raise from this place and
- 11:59tell them about he'll. Tell them about eternity.
- 12:04So they would repent, they may actually believe in turn from
- 12:08their ways and you know what? Jesus says he says these things.
- 12:14He says, if they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither
- 12:18will they be convinced if someone should rise from the
- 12:20dead? In other words, if you dismiss
- 12:24the scriptures, you'll dismiss any miracle.
- 12:29And this book itself is a miracle.
- 12:31It is a testimony to the person and work and resurrection of
- 12:35Jesus Christ. But these two that were walking
- 12:40on the road to Emmaus. They did not reject the
- 12:43scriptures. In fact, 47 miles, Jesus was
- 12:49walking with them and he revealed all that was about him
- 12:54found in the scriptures. And the approached Emmaus, but
- 12:58Jesus. Is going to walk on ahead.
- 13:03And there's something happening in the hearts of these.
- 13:06Two Disciples of these two, Skeptics of these two doubters.
- 13:12Because in verse 32, it says that when Jesus spoke the word
- 13:16of God to them on that road, their hearts were burning within
- 13:20them. Something was happening on the
- 13:23inside. There was conviction, there is a
- 13:25sense of life-giving power, and as they were talking with this
- 13:29Jesus, though, they did not recognize him though.
- 13:31They could not fully understand him.
- 13:33Something was stirring up inside of them and they came to the
- 13:36place where they were going to split paths and Jesus was going
- 13:39to walk on ahead. And in that moment.
- 13:43Better make a choice. In that moment, Jesus was going
- 13:49to keep on walking. It may be either today or it's
- 13:54been a series of days if you are a doubter, if you are a skeptic
- 13:58if you are not a Believer, if you were just a religious person
- 14:00but you've never been born again.
- 14:02Your hearts been stirring. When you hear the scriptures,
- 14:05when you hear it, something's happening inside of your heart.
- 14:09When you sat with the True Believer, they talk to you about
- 14:11what it means to be a follower of Jesus, there's something
- 14:14happening in your heart and that is the word of God and the Holy
- 14:18Spirit knocking on your heart, asking you to answer.
- 14:22And that's what was happening to these to the word of God.
- 14:25Was inviting them for more but here's the reality.
- 14:30Jesus was waiting for their invitation.
- 14:36Jesus was waiting for them to respond to the word and if they
- 14:41didn't, she would have moved on Jesus does this a lot in the
- 14:45Gospels? He just tends to walk by.
- 14:50You know why Jesus never force himself on you?
- 14:58If you're in this place that you've never truly surrendered
- 15:01to Jesus Christ, understand that this is a window of opportunity.
- 15:08Because Jesus is walking by. and so, in that moment, these two
- 15:15They said stay with us. It says they strongly urge them
- 15:19to come. Stay with us, it's late.
- 15:22Come be with us, their hearts were burning.
- 15:25We want to know more so many people say these things.
- 15:28Well, of Christ, really wants to reveal himself to me.
- 15:30He'll just do it. If Christ really wants to reveal
- 15:32himself, if Jesus is real, then he'll just show up.
- 15:35If he really wants me to do saved foolishness, how hungry
- 15:39are you to realize Christ? How hungry are you to realize
- 15:42the resurrected Christ? They were stirred and so they
- 15:46invited him. And the same way that Jesus
- 15:51responded to their invitation to do the same for you.
- 15:57He'll do the same for you. The moment you open your heart,
- 15:59though. You don't understand everything.
- 16:01Don't you don't understand the depths of what he's talking
- 16:04about or even who he is. If you're willing to invite him,
- 16:07he's willing to come And he does, he sits with them and in
- 16:13verse 31 is the result of what happens when a heart is burning
- 16:17and they want to know the truth. it says that in that moment,
- 16:22their eyes were opened In that moment, they understood in that
- 16:28moment. They saw that Jesus truly and
- 16:32Shirley was alive. And all the doubt was gone, all
- 16:40the skepticism was destroyed. Have your eyes been open to the
- 16:46resurrected Christ. Have your eyes understood him as
- 16:52the Holy Spirit opened, the eyes of your heart and you are
- 16:56walking. The reality this afternoon.
- 16:58Jesus is, in fact, alive. If he's alive, that means
- 17:04something that changes the way. You live, that changes the way,
- 17:08you sing that changes the way. You pray that changes the way
- 17:12you go to work that changes the way you deal with people that
- 17:15changes the way you look at time, that changes every aspect
- 17:18of your life, because if he's Life, he's coming back.
- 17:24He's coming back. He's not staying up there, he's
- 17:28coming back one day. Some of us were walking downtown
- 17:31yesterday. There's a flood of people. and
- 17:35as we were walking one specific Street, All these fire trucks
- 17:40came to one of the high-rise buildings and you just saw a
- 17:43flood of people looking up and we look to we didn't know what
- 17:47we were looking at. And then somebody gave the
- 17:51observation. As we saw those sea of people
- 17:54looking up into the high rise building, where the fire trucks
- 17:56was what will it be like when Jesus splits the sky open?
- 18:02And every, I will be hold them in that moment.
- 18:06What a sight that will be. Their eyes were opened they
- 18:11realize that Jesus was alive. And within a moment before they
- 18:16can Embrace him before, they can ask him more questions before
- 18:21they can grab a hold of him. He vanishes, he's gone.
- 18:28He's not there anymore. Why would he do that?
- 18:32Why would he reveal himself in such a way and then, just
- 18:34disappear? Because he wanted them to get
- 18:39out. And to testify that he was
- 18:41alive. That's exactly what happened.
- 18:45He vanishes. I mean, read verse 33 to 34 and
- 18:50they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem and they
- 18:54found the eleven and those who are with them gathered together
- 18:57saying the Lord has risen indeed and as appeared to Simon then
- 19:04they told what had happened on the road and how he is known to
- 19:07them, the breaking of bread. When your heart burns because
- 19:14you know, that this word is true and you invite Jesus and he
- 19:19opens your eyes. You can't help but testify what
- 19:23he's done for you. You can't contain it.
- 19:27You can't sit in the same place you must go out because now you
- 19:31have a testimony. You have a story, you have
- 19:36something to share with somebody Believers in Christ.
- 19:42And the world wants to hear what Christ has done for you and how
- 19:46he's opened your eyes. You have a story now.
- 19:49It's not about just celebrating in here.
- 19:51And next week, just going with the Motions, it's about going
- 19:54and walking with other people and saying, do you understand
- 19:56that Jesus is alive? He's open my eyes.
- 19:59He can open yours too. And as you present the
- 20:02scriptures, who knows their hearts can be burning as well,
- 20:05and they can invite Jesus, and he can do the same for them.
- 20:09Ask the Lord this afternoon, let my heartburn, again, let my
- 20:13heartburn again, to the truth that you are alive.
- 20:17Fill me with the Holy Spirit to go out and preach Christ
- 20:20crucified. And not just crucified Alive
- 20:23forevermore. If you ever find yourself
- 20:26walking as a disciple and you can't sense him, you don't
- 20:30understand his leadership. You don't feel the resurrected
- 20:35Christ. You know, what Christ says to
- 20:38you cling to the scriptures, cling to the word of God, cling
- 20:43to the truths that are found in here, just like this story, you,
- 20:45and I could look at this story because it's found in scripture
- 20:47and say, hey, these two walked in a season of grief and pain,
- 20:50they could not understand Jesus and him resurrected, they could
- 20:54not sense him. But we cling to the scriptures
- 20:57and we cling to the Scriptures, it will burn in our hearts.
- 21:01Father, we thank you. We thank you for Jesus.
- 21:14And we pray. Lord that we would all walk out
- 21:16of here. So, the truth of your word.
- 21:21And even our own testimonies that you are alive.
- 21:25You've revealed yourself to us now.
- 21:28Help us like these two to go out into the world and testify that
- 21:31you are alive that the Lord has risen indeed, Help us to be
- 21:38faithful Witnesses, with this short window called life, before
- 21:43you return. Help us to work.
- 21:45While it is day for night is coming.
- 21:47When no man can work. In Jesus name we pray.
- 21:52Amen. In Jesus name we pray.
- 21:52Amen.
