Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. A Feria of the eleventh Sunday after Pentecost with commemoration of saints Hippolytus and Cassian, martyrs, August 13 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's feast, Dom Prosper Guerrege writes the following. Not far from the sepulchre of Saint Lawrence on the opposite side of the Tibertean Way lies the tomb of Saint Hippolytus one of the sanctuaries most dear to the Christians in the days of triumph. Prudentius has described the magnificence of the crypt and the immense concourse attracted to it each year on the Ides of August.

Who was this saint? Of what rank and manner of life? What facts of his history are there to be told beyond that of his having given his blood for Christ? All those questions have in modern times become the subject of numerous and learned works. He was a murderer and that is nobility enough to make him glorious in our eyes.
• 1:29
Let us honor him then and together with him another soldier of Christ Cassian of Imola whom the church offers to our homage at the same time. Hippolytus was dragged by wild horses over rocks and briars till his body was all torn. Cassian, who was a schoolmaster, was delivered by the judge to the children he had taught and died of a thousand wounds inflicted by their styles. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen.
• 2:13
The introit. This God who dwells apart in holiness, who knits families together in unity of will, he will give his people strength and courage. Arise, O Lord, and let thy enemies be scattered, and let all that hate thee flee from before thy face. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen.
• 2:50
This God who dwells apart in holiness, who knits families together in unity of will, he will give his people strength and courage. The Collect. Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, who, in the abundance of Thy loving kindness, art want to go beyond both the merits and the requests of Thy suppliants, Pour down upon us thy mercy, that thou mayest forgive us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and grant us those good things which our prayer does not presume to ask. A commemoration of Saints Hippolytus and Cassian.
• 3:42
Great we beseech Thee, O Almighty God, that the venerable solemnity of Thy blessed martyrs, Hippolytus and Cassian, may increase in us both devotion and salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the first letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. Here, brethren, is an account of the gospel I preached to you. It was this that was handed on to you.
• 4:31
Upon this your faith rests. Through this, if you keep in mind the tenor of its preaching, you are in the way of salvation. Unless indeed your belief was ill founded. The chief message I handed on to you as it was handed on to me was that Christ as the scriptures had foretold died for our sins that he was buried and then, as the scriptures had foretold, rose again on the third day. That he was seen by Kiphas, then by the 11 apostles, and afterwards by more than 500 of the brethren at once, most of whom are alive at this day, though some have gone to their rest.
• 5:30
Then he was seen by James, then by all the apostles. And last of all, I too saw him like the last child that comes to birth unexpectedly. Of all the apostles, I am the least. Nay, I am not fit to be called an apostle since there was a time when I persecuted the church of God. Only by God's grace I am what I am, and the grace he has shown me has not been without fruit.
• 6:10
I have worked harder than all of them, or rather it was not I, but the grace of God working with me. The gradual, in God hath my heart confided, and I have been helped, and my flesh hath flourished again. And with my will I will give praise to him. Unto thee will I cry, O Lord. O God, be not thou silent.
• 6:45
Depart not from me. Alleluia. Alleluia. Rejoice to God our helper. Sing aloud to the God of Jacob.
• 6:58
Take a pleasant psalm with the harp. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Mark. At that time Jesus set out again from the region of Tyre and came by way of Sidon to the Sea Of Galilee right into the region of Decapolis. And they brought to him a man who was deaf and dumb with the prayer that he would lay his hand upon him.
• 7:31
And he took him aside out of the multitude. He put his fingers into his ears and spat and touched his tongue. Then he looked up to heaven and sighed. A feta, he said, that is be opened. Whereupon his ears were opened and the bond which tied his tongue was loosed and he talked plainly and he laid a strict charge on them not to speak of it to anyone.
• 8:08
But the more he charged them, the more widely they published it and were more than ever astonished. He has done well, they said, in all his doings. He has made the deaf hear, and the dumb speak. The offertory. I will extol thee, O Lord, for thou hast upheld me and hast not made my enemies to rejoice over me.
• 8:41
O Lord, I have cried to thee, and thou hast healed me. The secret. Look down, we beseech thee, O Lord, upon our service that what we offer may be an acceptable gift unto thee in support to our frailty. A commemoration of Saints Hippolytus and Cassian. We offer thee, O Lord, the gifts of our devotion.
• 9:14
May they be pleasing to thee for the honor of thy saints and through thy mercy profitable to our salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise.
• 10:27
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
• 10:53
Honor the Lord with thy substance and with the first of all thy fruits. And thy barns shall be filled with abundance and thy presses shall run over with wine. The post communion. Let us pray. We beseech thee, O Lord, that we who have received the sacrament of salvation may find both in mind and in body the help which it contains, that being saved in both we may glory in the fullness of the heavenly remedy.
• 11:34
A commemoration of Saints Hippolytus and Cassian. May the partaking of thy sacrament, which we have received, save us, O Lord, and confirm us in the light of thy truth through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
