- 0:00Chapter 19 from the book of Job. First let's pray.
- 0:03Dear Lord, please let the Holy Spirit enlighten us as we read
- 0:08through this chapter and learn what you want us to know from
- 0:12this. We ask this in Jesus name Amen.
- 0:17Then job replied. So we are in the middle of going
- 0:21back and forth. In the prior chapter, Bildad,
- 0:25one of Job's friends, spoke. Now Job is responding.
- 0:31Then Job replied, How long will you torment me and crush me with
- 0:36words? 10 times.
- 0:38Now you have reproached me shamelessly.
- 0:40You attack me. If it is true that I have gone
- 0:43astray, my error remains my concern alone.
- 0:48If indeed you would exalt yourselves above me and use my
- 0:52humiliation against me, then know that God has wronged me and
- 0:56drawn His net around me. Though I cry violence, I get no
- 1:01response. Though I call for help, there is
- 1:04no justice. He has blocked my way, so I
- 1:07cannot pass. He has shrouded my paths in
- 1:10darkness. He has stripped me of my honor
- 1:13and removed the crown from my head.
- 1:17He tears me down on every side till I am gone.
- 1:20He uproots my hope like a tree. His anger burns against me.
- 1:26He counts me among his enemies. His troops advance in force.
- 1:31They build a siege ramp against me and encamp around my tent.
- 1:36He has alienated my family from me.
- 1:38My acquaintances are completely estranged from me.
- 1:41My relatives have gone away. My closest friends have
- 1:44forgotten me. My guests and my female servants
- 1:47count me as a foreigner. They look on me as a stranger.
- 1:50I summon my servant, but he does not answer, though I beg him
- 1:54with my own mouth. My breath is offensive to my
- 1:57wife. I am loathsome to my own family.
- 2:01Even the little boys scorn me when I appear.
- 2:04They ridicule me. All my intimate friends to test
- 2:07me, those I love have turned against me.
- 2:10I am nothing but skin and bones. I have escaped only by the skin
- 2:15of my teeth. Have pity on me, my friends,
- 2:19Have pity, for the hand of God has struck me.
- 2:23Why do you pursue me as God does?
- 2:25Will you never get enough of my flesh?
- 2:28Oh, that my words were recorded, that they were written on a
- 2:31scroll, that they were inscribed with an iron tool on lead and
- 2:35engraved in rock forever. I know that my Redeemer lives
- 2:40and that in the end he will stand on the earth and after my
- 2:43skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.
- 2:48I myself will see him with my own eyes, eye and not another.
- 2:54How my heart yearns within me. If you say how will if you say
- 3:01how we will hound him, since the root of the trouble lies in him.
- 3:07You should fear the sword yourselves, for the wrath will
- 3:10bring punishment by the sword, and then you will know that
- 3:14there is judgement. So there's quite a bit here.
- 3:19Quick chapter to read but lots to talk about.
- 3:23So I'll just go through some of my notes that I wrote when I was
- 3:28reading this, and then I'll go into the questions and answers
- 3:30from the study Bible. So we're seeing here that Job is
- 3:35just feels this relentless accusation from his friends.
- 3:39He's like, how long are you going to torment me and crush me
- 3:42with your words? And and then he's also humble.
- 3:46He humbles himself. Despite all the accusations from
- 3:49his friends, Job remains humble. I'm this gives you an indication
- 3:53of his righteousness that God saw in him that he's actually
- 3:57remaining humble even though he's being accused.
- 4:00He is getting upset about it, but he's more like, you guys
- 4:04have pity on me. Stop the accusations.
- 4:07Just understand, you know, like where I'm coming from and and
- 4:11they're just not understanding this.
- 4:14So he humbles himself and he says, if it is true that I've
- 4:17gone astray. So he doesn't believe it, but
- 4:20he's like, if it's true, my error remains my concern.
- 4:25Like you guys don't have to add to it.
- 4:27It this is for me. This is my problem with God.
- 4:29That has to be worked out. And then it says if indeed you
- 4:33would exalt yourselves above me and use my humiliation against
- 4:37me like they're using everything against him.
- 4:41And he says then know that God has wronged me and drawn his net
- 4:44around me. So just in questioning in Job,
- 4:49questioning if my error, if it's my error, if I've gone astray.
- 4:56And and then it's just saying, you know, God has has wronged me
- 5:02and drawn his net around me. To me, this sounds like
- 5:05confusion like this is just and Job is confused.
- 5:10He has never experienced this before.
- 5:12He doesn't understand it. That's why you keep asking God
- 5:16why, you know, like I'm, I don't know what I've done wrong.
- 5:20I why is this all happening to me?
- 5:22Why is this coming upon me? And I think we can also maybe
- 5:27learn something from this because confusion it, I've heard
- 5:33that, you know, Satan is the author of confusion and we know
- 5:37for sure that he is the author of this.
- 5:40Satan is doing this to Job. And so maybe when we have a
- 5:46clear conscience and there's all this stuff coming against us,
- 5:51then could that perhaps be something evil and that is
- 5:56coming against us? Is that spiritual warfare?
- 5:59That's what Job is experiencing. And you know, we have to think
- 6:03about when we, when there is confusion, that's not God.
- 6:06God is very clear. So we can learn something from
- 6:10that. He is reaching out to God.
- 6:12I don't know why God is silent, except that maybe he.
- 6:17That's part of the process of being tested.
- 6:20So if you're not getting an answer about it, maybe that's
- 6:23just part of the testing that you're going through to see how
- 6:26you will, you know, that's testing of a person's patience.
- 6:30And, you know, a lot of people when they get impatient and they
- 6:34think, oh, God's not going to do anything about this, I'm going
- 6:36to take it in my own hands, just like Abraham.
- 6:39And, you know, he messed it up because there's this ongoing war
- 6:43between the children that he fathered.
- 6:46I mean, even to this day you have Ishmael and then you have
- 6:52Isaac and and that you know, Ishmael was the son of a of a
- 6:58servant of Sarah's or Sarah's, Sarah's and then Isaac was the
- 7:08the promised one that God promised.
- 7:10But Abraham actually it was it was Sarah.
- 7:14I mean, and you know what, that's kind of interesting that
- 7:16I just like came to mind. And I don't know why I'm going
- 7:18to say this because I'm female, but it seems like the enemy
- 7:23works through women and then the women convince the men.
- 7:27So there's like this, you know, there's this maybe there's this
- 7:30desire for men, for women, but then the women are the ones that
- 7:34have lured and the men are supposed to be the covering over
- 7:39the women. But, you know, look at Adam and
- 7:43Eve. I mean, Eve was the first one
- 7:45and then she introduced Adam to it and then they both sinned.
- 7:48I mean, they both should be held accountable for it.
- 7:51But it looks like the enemy comes through the the woman.
- 7:54And maybe there's that sort of empathy, that sort of, you know,
- 7:59nurturing side of a female that that's an easier way to get in.
- 8:04And so we have to just think about that, like the enemy
- 8:06coming through that way. Just something to consider.
- 8:10Just an observation. And, you know, we see it in
- 8:14other places, too. Like I think about Rachel, who
- 8:18Jacob loved, and yet she was stealing idols and taking them
- 8:23with her when they left Laban's home and went out to, you know,
- 8:28live on their own. And so that was another one that
- 8:32happened. And then we look at Solomon and
- 8:35his wives, all these women that he married, they were idolatrous
- 8:39and they worshipped other little G gods, fake gods.
- 8:44And then he ended up building temples for them.
- 8:46So it's kind of like we have to be careful of that.
- 8:49Like for females, you have to be careful because we are probably
- 8:53a target of the enemy. The enemy can work through US.
- 8:56Look at Job's own wife. She said curse God and die.
- 9:00Is that something, you know, from God?
- 9:03No, look at the enemy. I mean, I'm just seeing this now
- 9:06over and over. I mean, I didn't plan this or
- 9:08think about this before talking. I mean, this just came to me.
- 9:11So as women, if you know, if if it is the woman that's listening
- 9:16to this, we have to be careful because the enemy will work
- 9:19through us. And then as men, you have to be
- 9:22very cautious about women you let into your life because of
- 9:28what the enemy does, because the enemy can enter your life
- 9:31through a woman. And there's just a whole bunch
- 9:35of examples that just came to mind right now.
- 9:38Oh my gosh. Here's another one too.
- 9:40Jezebel and Ahab. Ahab was a king.
- 9:43And Jezebel was this wicked woman who just, she ruled the
- 9:48house. It wasn't the way that God had
- 9:50structured a family. She was the boss.
- 9:54She wore the pants. She bossed him around.
- 9:56She told him what to do. She said you do this.
- 9:59She was like, she was this domineering woman that was over
- 10:02him. And it's just a it's amazing
- 10:05now. I mean, like, I never thought
- 10:07about this. But and then you look at what is
- 10:10happening in our world, just the twisted, skewed opposite of what
- 10:18God has taught us through the Bible, through what he has given
- 10:22through the word of God. And then how you know something
- 10:27good can be turned into something evil.
- 10:33So women who are good and nurturing and have I I'm no ones
- 10:39good, but you know who have this like empathy for other people,
- 10:42this carrying this nature of wanting to take care of others,
- 10:45this motherly aspect. But then and the enemy can
- 10:49distort that and make a woman think it's a good thing to be in
- 10:54power, to be in control, to dominate, to do all these
- 10:58things. And, and it's praised in our
- 11:00world today. But you can see it's the exact
- 11:04opposite of what God teaches us through Scripture.
- 11:08And you can see that these things cause men to fall.
- 11:13So it's just an observation. And I'm a woman, so I think I
- 11:17can say something like this. And it's the truth.
- 11:21It's in the Bible. Anyway, I'm not going to dwell
- 11:23on that much longer, but just something that came to mind as
- 11:26I'm, I'm going through this. So then, you know, God is, God
- 11:33is silent. Job doesn't know what's going on
- 11:36and but he's seeing all of these like things that he said.
- 11:39He removed the crown from my head and I did a search in
- 11:43Scripture to see what what are the different crowns that are
- 11:46talked about? Because you hear that Paul talks
- 11:49about it and there's other person scripture.
- 11:51Well, what are these crowns that and where do these people get
- 11:54these ideas of these crowns? And so I searched crown and
- 11:59there's like there's a warning in revelation like don't let
- 12:02anybody take your crown. Well, what kind of crown?
- 12:06Who's going to take a crown and what is it?
- 12:08We could probably go into an A whole podcast study about the
- 12:11crown, but I don't really want to go that far off the path
- 12:15here. But it seems like sin actually
- 12:20removes the crown, I guess Lamentations 516 That's what I
- 12:26wrote in here on in my study Bible.
- 12:28And I was looking at the different crowns that are
- 12:30referenced. Second Timothy 48.
- 12:34There's a crown of righteousness.
- 12:36So if we, you know, that's how a crown gets removed.
- 12:41Don't let anyone steal your crown.
- 12:43Don't let anyone cause you to sin and lose your crown.
- 12:48Well, the crown, what is the crown?
- 12:50It's talked about righteousness, the crown of righteousness, the
- 12:53crown of life in James One, verse 12.
- 12:57It's talked about the crown of glory in first Peter chapter 5,
- 13:02verse 4. So there's righteousness, life
- 13:05and glory and then victory in Revelation 210.
- 13:10So those are all the different crowns that are talked about in
- 13:14the Bible and what they represent.
- 13:17Righteousness, life, glory, victory.
- 13:20Don't let anybody take those from you.
- 13:22Righteousness, life, glory and victory.
- 13:25And then in Revelation 12, verse one, Israel is talked is
- 13:31referred to as jewels in the crown, which is interesting too.
- 13:37So God's chosen people are the jewels in the crown.
- 13:41Eventually God will do that. So very interesting if you want
- 13:47to study more word search Crown and see all the different
- 13:50references and read the scripture.
- 13:53Then I'm at verse 11 now and it's Job talking about his anger
- 13:58burns against me. Well, that's not true.
- 14:00Again, deception by the enemy. Job doesn't have the answer.
- 14:05This must have been the first time that mankind was tested by
- 14:08Job, that at least it was documented.
- 14:10Not the first and only time, but it was documented here in this
- 14:14in this story. And so Job thinks God's anger is
- 14:20coming against him. And that's what we can think.
- 14:21If we are going through a period of testing, it may not be
- 14:25because of something that we've done it.
- 14:28And it very well could be something spiritual to test us
- 14:33to see. Like what will we do when
- 14:35something bad comes against us? That was Satan's whole ploy.
- 14:39He said to God, you put a hedge of protection around him.
- 14:42Of course he's going to, you know, worship you and love you
- 14:46and all this stuff because you, you blessed him with all these
- 14:49things. Take that stuff away from him
- 14:51and watch him curse you. That's what Satan was saying was
- 14:53that Job is superficial. He only likes you because of
- 14:57what you've given him. But then God knew Job.
- 15:01And, and this is my speculation, I was wondering if God maybe was
- 15:07trying to show Satan, yeah, you were given everything, but you
- 15:12rejected me. Job was given everything.
- 15:15But now even if I take stuff away, Job will still love me.
- 15:19Like God knows Job's heart. Maybe he was trying to show
- 15:24Satan something. Satan is not like Job.
- 15:28Satan was given everything according to what we find in
- 15:31Scripture about him. But he that wasn't good enough
- 15:34for him. He wanted more.
- 15:36He wanted to be worshipped. He wanted to be God and he
- 15:39wasn't satisfied with his position.
- 15:42And so we have to think about that too.
- 15:44Like that kind of a desire, you know, where is that coming from?
- 15:49Is that from God or is that from the enemy?
- 15:52And is it for goodness or is it for selfishness?
- 15:55We know that really, the more I look at what sin is, Sin is
- 15:59being selfish about things. I mean, if you really boil it
- 16:02down, you can just, you know, like what is sinful?
- 16:05Well, sinful is being selfish, thinking about yourself more
- 16:10than other people. Jesus was the example of being a
- 16:13servant, washing the feet of his disciples.
- 16:16He was the one who is submitted to serve others.
- 16:20He gave his life ultimately for all of us, that how much more
- 16:25could you serve someone than to give your life as a ransom for
- 16:29other people, to save other people?
- 16:30Give your life. That's what Jesus did.
- 16:34And so Jesus teaches us to not be selfish.
- 16:40The world teaches us to be selfish.
- 16:43We are, we can see this, this spiritual forces that are in
- 16:47opposition to one another and that we're kind of caught in the
- 16:50mist. We everything that we hear in
- 16:52the world is like self focused. I mean, do you think about, I
- 16:55don't know, the last what, 5-10 years or so with selfies, you
- 17:00know, and just the focus on, you know, look at me, look at me,
- 17:03look at me and, and the world that we're in.
- 17:06And that's just the opposite of what God teaches us through his
- 17:10word. And the further we get away from
- 17:12the word of God, the further we fall into the pressure of the
- 17:16world to conform to the pressure of the world and become selfish
- 17:21people. And it's the exact opposite of a
- 17:24child of God. A child of God is not a selfish
- 17:28person. A child of God is a servant of
- 17:31others. And these are things that we
- 17:33learn from Scripture. And the only way we're going to
- 17:35learn it from script is from Scripture because this is not
- 17:37normal for any of us. Our life is came about from a
- 17:41sin nature. And until we learn from God, we
- 17:46probably don't quite get this about selfishness.
- 17:54Also, in verse 13, it says he referring to God has alienated
- 17:59my family from me. My acquaintances are completely
- 18:01estranged from me. So the wrong person is blamed by
- 18:05Job. He's confused, he doesn't know,
- 18:07he can't understand, but he's stating a fact that somebody
- 18:11alienated him. The problem is it's not God.
- 18:15And so when bad things happen to us, God doesn't do that to to
- 18:20harm a person. God is not this been he's not
- 18:23this like mean person. He is good.
- 18:26He is he is defined as love. So if you're defined as love,
- 18:30are you going to go after somebody and and do all these
- 18:34things? No, no, I mean, that's just like
- 18:37contrary to what God's nature is, how God is revealed within
- 18:42Scripture. So God does allow discipline.
- 18:47He allows bad things to happen to people because we're hard
- 18:51headed, because we don't turn to God, because we don't recognize
- 18:55him until everything else has been stripped away from us, some
- 18:59of us at least. And then when everything's been
- 19:01stripped away, then you have nothing else.
- 19:05And then you reach out to God because there's nothing else.
- 19:08And that's not the story of everyone, but that's the story
- 19:11of some. And this, the hard headed ones
- 19:14and the ones who are so self absorbed, That's what happens to
- 19:18people is when we don't turn on our own, God will let these
- 19:22things happen. And there's love behind that.
- 19:25There's love like if this finally happens to a person,
- 19:28they're going to their eyes will be open because they'll have
- 19:30nothing else and they'll have to turn to me.
- 19:32So, and even in that, you know, people will make a choice.
- 19:36They'll either say, wow, you let this happen to me, so I don't
- 19:40like you anymore. That could be somebody's
- 19:42response or somebody could humble themselves and say, yeah,
- 19:47this happened to me. But boy, I was not living the
- 19:50way a child of God would live. And I was far from you.
- 19:55The sin separated from me, separated us.
- 19:59And so I want that sin out of my life, and I want to be.
- 20:03In union with you. So there's two different
- 20:06reactions to some destructive thing that happens in our life.
- 20:12Either we we blame God wrongly because we don't look at
- 20:17ourselves, we don't humble, we don't humble, humble ourselves.
- 20:21And if you think about it, that's one of the things that
- 20:23God hates, pride. And so in order to humble
- 20:27yourself, you have to get rid of pride.
- 20:29You have to quit thinking that you're the best, that you're
- 20:31good, that you're, you know, this amazing person.
- 20:35And why would something so devastating happen to such a
- 20:37wonderful, amazing person? We have to get beyond that and
- 20:42look at the truth of who we are. And that's humbling.
- 20:44Nobody wants to admit we all want to be good.
- 20:48We all want to be liked, I guess.
- 20:52And, and so if we want that, I mean, we should really want that
- 20:56from God most of all that well, God loves us.
- 20:59So we it's not conditional upon that.
- 21:02So we already have that from God.
- 21:04We don't necessarily have that from other people and not all
- 21:06people will like us and it really kind of doesn't matter.
- 21:11We only need God's love. And if others know God, they
- 21:16will also because that's the way God is, because God will be in
- 21:19them and because of God's love, we will be loved.
- 21:23So it's like this trickle, trickle down kind of effect with
- 21:26God that when like Jesus prayed to the Father and he said, let
- 21:31them be one as we are one like God, one is this union.
- 21:35And that's what I believe we receive when we become born
- 21:38again, when we become born of the Spirit, when we receive the
- 21:42Holy Spirit through Jesus from the Father and the Holy Spirit,
- 21:49we give the Holy Spirit permission to start acting in
- 21:51our life, to start guiding us and we submit.
- 21:55So again, we have to get rid of our pride and and get rid of our
- 21:58own way of thinking. We know the right way to go.
- 22:01We know what to do. I don't need anybody's help.
- 22:04We need to get rid of that and say, yeah, I don't know.
- 22:08I've tried on my own and I haven't been so successful at
- 22:11times. So God, I need you.
- 22:13I need your guidance. I need the Holy Spirit to guide
- 22:16me. And even when it's something
- 22:19that I don't necessarily prefer, I'm going to choose your way
- 22:23because I know who you are and I respect you.
- 22:28And so I'm going to do it. And then every time we make that
- 22:31choice, this is what I've found personally, is every little
- 22:35choice that we make, every little decision that we make, we
- 22:39then the next ones become a little bit easier.
- 22:42And that may just be like the Holy Spirit.
- 22:45It is the Holy Spirit working in us.
- 22:47Because I know that if I would have looked at the way I am now
- 22:50compared to, you know, 10 years ago, there's a huge difference.
- 22:54And, and I, I don't know how it happened other than seeking God.
- 23:00So anyway, and then Job in verses 14 through 20, he talks
- 23:07about the facts of all the bad things that have happened to
- 23:09him. So he's acknowledging these bad
- 23:11things. It's just he blamed the wrong
- 23:12person. He should have blamed Satan, but
- 23:15he didn't know about that. He just blamed God.
- 23:17But then he's asking his friends in verse 21, have pity on me, my
- 23:20friends. And then he's saying like, why
- 23:23do you pursue me as God does? He's he's not getting any help
- 23:26from his friends. And then what's interesting is
- 23:29verse 23 where you said, oh, that my words were recorded,
- 23:32that they were written on a scroll, that they were inscribed
- 23:35with an iron tool and lead and engraved in rock forever.
- 23:39It's kind of interesting that he actually got his wish because
- 23:43it's in the Bible and now people are reading this for thousands
- 23:47and thousands of years now. This verse 25 through 27 is
- 23:54amazing to me because this shows that Job, he somehow knows
- 24:00Jesus. This is so interesting, This is
- 24:04Jesus. This is like he says, I know
- 24:09that my Redeemer lives the Redeemer's Jesus, and that in
- 24:14the end he will stand on the earth.
- 24:16Jesus's feet will come down to the Mount of Olives and they
- 24:19will split. And then he says, and after my
- 24:25skin has been destroyed, yes. So when we go to the grave, we
- 24:31become bones. I mean, our skin goes away.
- 24:35It becomes ashes. So after my skin has been
- 24:38destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.
- 24:43He has some knowledge of restoration, some knowledge of
- 24:47becoming a a new creation in the in the presence of God, I will
- 24:52see God. And he said I myself will see
- 24:55him with my own eyes, eye and not another.
- 25:00How my heart yearns within me. I mean, this is so cool because
- 25:06so I mean, this is considered, I, I heard that the book of Job
- 25:10is like one of the oldest books and way, way, way back then,
- 25:15somehow he knew about his Redeemer.
- 25:19He knew that he would live again.
- 25:22He knew that with his own eyes and in a fleshly body, but a
- 25:27supernatural, he didn't, he didn't say supernatural, but we
- 25:29know that that our bodies will be changed to something
- 25:33supernatural. And and then he longs for this.
- 25:36Of course he does because of what he's going through, the
- 25:39distress that he's going through.
- 25:40I just wonder, how did Job know that?
- 25:43Was it revelation? Was it his closeness with God?
- 25:46Did God just reveal that to him? I don't, I don't know that we'll
- 25:50have the answers to those questions, but it's it's pretty
- 25:53cool that he knew that. And then he gives a warning.
- 25:59The last verses of the chapter 28 through 29, he gives a
- 26:04warning to his friends and it is the truth.
- 26:06And it says, if you say how we will hound him, since the root
- 26:11of his trouble lies within him, you should feel the fear, the
- 26:15sword yourselves, for the wrath will bring punishment by the
- 26:19sword. And then you will know there is
- 26:21judgement. So Job is aware of this and we
- 26:26will find out in the end of the book of Job that God isn't angry
- 26:30with the friends because they were not speaking.
- 26:33They were speaking like half truths.
- 26:34They didn't know. They were claiming to know.
- 26:36They were claiming to be wise, but they really weren't.
- 26:40And Joe was at least humble enough to say, I don't know, you
- 26:43know, like, but he knew his own actions.
- 26:45He's like, I, I'm not doing anything, but what why is all
- 26:48this coming on me? And I know that that's what
- 26:50happens to wicked people, but I haven't done anything and God
- 26:53hasn't shown me. And I, I just want to know, like
- 26:56I want to know from God what's going on here.
- 26:59And and his friends, you know, they're automatically assuming
- 27:03instead of, you know, relating the same way as Job and being
- 27:06humble and saying, yeah, Job, we don't know.
- 27:09We've never seen you be unrighteous.
- 27:13And so we don't know why this is happening to you either.
- 27:16They didn't say that they all of a sudden were like, well, no, we
- 27:19know we're wise. And so God wasn't really happy
- 27:23with that. And I think that's another thing
- 27:25that's pride, thinking that we're smart, that we know it
- 27:28all. So we have to look at that in
- 27:31our lives when we start assuming that we know everything,
- 27:34especially like Jesus said to Nicodemus, you know, one of the
- 27:37intelligent teachers back in that time, he told him, you
- 27:42know, like I'm trying to tell you about earthly things and
- 27:45you're not getting it. How can I tell you about
- 27:47spiritual things? When it gets to the spiritual
- 27:49side of things, we really don't know very much.
- 27:53We only know what the Bible reveals to us.
- 27:56So, but I think the Bible reveals a lot to us.
- 28:00And especially in this situation, I think this is
- 28:03helpful for people to realize that, you know, to examine
- 28:07ourselves, humble ourselves and look at what have I done?
- 28:10Ask God to reveal, ask the Holy Spirit, tell me what I've done
- 28:15when I experience stuff like this, like make me aware of it
- 28:19so that I can do something about that with the help of God, of
- 28:23course, with the help of the Holy Spirit, But don't leave me
- 28:26in this situation. And then if it's, if it's
- 28:29nothing that comes to mind and we are genuinely humbling
- 28:34ourselves and open to receiving a not so good report card from
- 28:38God, then if nothing comes back to us or we don't have guilt, I
- 28:42think guilt is a good thing. It's like the Holy Spirit's
- 28:44conviction of us. Then something when we feel
- 28:47guilty about something we should say like is, is that righteous
- 28:51guilt? We don't like people to put
- 28:53guilt on us. But when we look at ourselves,
- 28:56if we feel guilty, it's probably the Holy Spirit letting us know,
- 29:00hey, you really shouldn't have done that or you really should
- 29:03have done that, whatever it is. So we should respond to that and
- 29:09pray about it and be willing to let God reveal things that are
- 29:13not so pretty that we don't necessarily want to deal with,
- 29:16but that we need to if we want to be in a good relationship
- 29:21with God. And so anyway, that that's about
- 29:25the end of my observations in this chapter.
- 29:27I'm going to go through the questions and answers from the
- 29:30Study Bible and then we will wrap this up.
- 29:32I haven't read these before, so hopefully it doesn't contradict
- 29:35anything that I just said. All right, so was Job keeping
- 29:39score 10 times was an expression commonly used as a cinnamon
- 29:43synonym for often or many. It was also sometimes used as a
- 29:48round Number. Why is God sometimes silent when
- 29:52we cry for help? The short answer might be that
- 29:54God's silence can deepen our faith.
- 29:56The long answer is that we don't know.
- 29:59God's silence has puzzled his people from the earliest times
- 30:02until now. God, even in his matchless love
- 30:05for His people, sometimes allows us to wait seemingly alone.
- 30:10Had Job worn a crown? The phrase crown from my head
- 30:14may be a metaphor for honor. Job had fallen from a position
- 30:18of respect in his community to that of a homeless vagrant.
- 30:23His honor had been replaced by dishonor.
- 30:26Some have also suggested that the crown may represent Job's
- 30:30hair, which may have been shaved off as a symbol of great
- 30:32humiliation. Is God responsible for Satan's
- 30:37actions or people's sins? We know that evil exists in this
- 30:43world. Its origins are personified in a
- 30:47cruel being identified in the Bible as Satan the Adversary, or
- 30:52the Devil the slanderer. But this creature's origin is
- 30:57never tied to the Creator who made all things good.
- 31:02Satan first appears in the creation story with no
- 31:05explanation of how he got there or where he came from.
- 31:09Some think the poetic imagery of Isaiah 14, which describes the
- 31:13power and demise of the king of Babylon, alludes to Satan's
- 31:16origins. But this is only a theological
- 31:19speculation. You know what, I do want to
- 31:23mention something. It says the Creator who made all
- 31:25things good. It does say to Satan that you
- 31:28were the you were perfection until sin was found in you,
- 31:33until wickedness was found in you.
- 31:36So I still think that you know, Satan was created by God.
- 31:42God is the creator and Satan was created by him.
- 31:47God has authority over him as God has authority over
- 31:51everything he creates and but God gives free will and that's
- 31:58what we are experiencing right now at this stage of the age, if
- 32:03you want to call it that, that the free will and I guess we'll
- 32:08always have free will not guess, but I mean it, it seems so in in
- 32:11Scripture. But right now, this is the the
- 32:17determination of where we will be in eternity.
- 32:21And Satan had free will. Satan used his free will to go
- 32:26against God. Satan thought he could outsmart
- 32:29God, but he doesn't. We know that from what it says
- 32:35in the Bible. So God did make all things good.
- 32:41And if he's the creator of everything, then he had to make
- 32:44Satan it. You know, obviously the Bible
- 32:47doesn't specifically say that, but it does show that God is,
- 32:52you know, Satan is under control of God because he has to answer
- 32:56to God when he's in the counsel of God in chapter 1.
- 33:00And God asks him, you know, where have you been?
- 33:02God surely knows, but it's just he has to get permission from
- 33:10God to do anything to Job. So God is over Satan.
- 33:14OK, a cryptic scene in the drama of Job shows Satan as part of
- 33:20the company of the angels who present themselves before God.
- 33:24While this being being had the power to wreak havoc on Job's
- 33:28life in an attempt to make him sin, Satan's power was also
- 33:31limited by God's permission and prohibitions.
- 33:34The limitation of Satan's power by God is echoed by Jesus and
- 33:37Luke chapter 10 verses 17 to 21 in the New Testament and is
- 33:42pictured graphically in Revelation 20 verses 7 through
- 33:4610. We also know that the Bible does
- 33:48not absolve human beings of their guilt for sinful choices
- 33:53and behaviors in James 113 through 18.
- 33:57Yes, I think we can't say like the devil made me do it.
- 34:00The devil can influence. We see that we see the from what
- 34:05I see in this scripture is that we see the evil 1 influencing
- 34:10Job's friends and they start taking on the characteristics of
- 34:13the influencer and they start accusing, condemning and not
- 34:18being supportive and causing confusion, all these things so
- 34:22that they are responding to an influence, a spiritual
- 34:28influence. And we know that God allowed
- 34:29that spiritual influence to happen to, to test Job.
- 34:33So we see that they can, but these people, each person is
- 34:37ultimately responsible for our own decisions.
- 34:42God gives us free will. We can be influenced by evil,
- 34:45but we ultimately are responsible for our decisions.
- 34:49I think it's helpful for people when, you know, I guess we can't
- 34:54blame every inclination to sin on Satan, but you know, we have
- 35:00that inside of us. But why do we have that inside
- 35:03of us that we have it as a result of sin?
- 35:07And if we can get that sin out of us, someday we will be
- 35:10purified and made holy and like God says, be holy because I am
- 35:15holy. And on the day that Jesus
- 35:18returns and we make that transition from mortal beings to
- 35:23immortal beings, then we will be made perfect in the presence of
- 35:28the Lord. So right now it's our testing.
- 35:31Like, are we for or against God and where will we be in
- 35:38eternity? That's what's happening right
- 35:40now. We are being tested on this
- 35:42earth right now. This is a test, and it's an
- 35:45important test to pass because you don't want to be separated
- 35:48from God in eternity. There's no coming back after
- 35:52that. Right now.
- 35:52We get, you know, we, it's kind of like you, you get a few
- 35:58chances, however many chances God allows us, but we don't know
- 36:02how many chances we get because sometimes God just turns us over
- 36:05to a deprived mind. If we keep rejecting God over
- 36:09and over and over again and he sees that it's in our heart that
- 36:12we're just like stubborn and prideful and resistant to the
- 36:16Holy Spirit, God can turn us over.
- 36:18I didn't ever want that to happen because I want to be an
- 36:21eternity with God. And so that's something that we
- 36:24all need to think about. I'm going to wrap up a few more
- 36:28questions, OK. Did God consider Job an enemy?
- 36:31These are the words of feeling, not fact.
- 36:34Job felt like an enemy of God, but God had not deserted him.
- 36:40We have the advantage of knowing the beginning of the story, that
- 36:42God delighted in Job, and that God's and that Job's actual
- 36:46enemy was the accuser, Satan. Why would family and friends
- 36:50abandoned one who suffers? Some people can't handle the
- 36:53intense environment. They don't want to be around
- 36:56pain and suffering. It's too uncomfortable.
- 36:58Others have little sympathy and hear everything as whining.
- 37:02Still others leave, perhaps because they think the sufferer
- 37:05deserves what happened to them. It's kind of sad.
- 37:10Why did Job want his words inscribed with an iron tool on
- 37:14lead? The precise meaning of this
- 37:16phrase is uncertain. Apparently, Job wanted his words
- 37:18engraved on a monument of some sort so that his case would be
- 37:22judged later by others whom deemed more, whom he deemed more
- 37:26honest than his friends. Whom did Job consider his
- 37:30Redeemer? Some say this person was human,
- 37:33others say divine. We cannot be certain.
- 37:36Whoever it was, Job considered himself on trial and he was sure
- 37:40someone would come to his defence.
- 37:42The role of Job's Redeemer is similar to that of Jesus Christ
- 37:47in the New Testament. Job was probably Speaking of God
- 37:50himself. What turned Job's despair into
- 37:54hope? We aren't told.
- 37:56After looking at the past and finding no comfort there, Job
- 37:59decided to look to the future. His friends were poor
- 38:02comforters, so his only recourse was to trust God for future
- 38:06vindication. Nothing had changed out of this
- 38:09outwardly, but by some powerful inner dynamic, he surmounted his
- 38:14despair. This is a demonstration of
- 38:18faith, confidence in what we hope for, and assurance about
- 38:22what we do not see from Hebrews 11 chapter our Chapter 11 verse
- 38:28one. What did Joe believe about the
- 38:31afterlife? Everyone in the ancient world,
- 38:33including Joe, believed in the resurrection of the dead and the
- 38:36existence of an afterlife. It's uncertain, though, whether
- 38:39he thought in terms of a bodily resurrection as taught later in
- 38:43the New Testament. Well, I'd say hold up a minute
- 38:45because he said his his skin was destroyed and then he talks
- 38:49about his in his flesh, he will see God.
- 38:52So to me it sounds like how can you get flesh back if it was
- 38:56already destroyed? So it seems like he does know
- 38:59what this is about. So Job merely expressed a strong
- 39:03confidence that somehow, somewhere he would meet God face
- 39:06to face. OK, did Job wish?
- 39:08See, this is where sometimes I disagree with the study Bible.
- 39:11And it's just like looking at the words and what it actually
- 39:14says and pausing on it a minute and and maybe it's whatever
- 39:19translation that they had looked at, but this is the NIV version
- 39:22and it's in an NIV Bible. So I don't know why that isn't
- 39:25more clear, but I don't know. That's why it's important to
- 39:30just really meditate on things directly and with God, ask God
- 39:37for revelation of things. And and because we might see
- 39:40something that somebody else didn't and then somebody else
- 39:43sees things that we didn't because these things that are
- 39:45brought up in the study Bible, they weren't things that came to
- 39:48mind when I was reading it. So it's helpful to have that
- 39:51additional information. Did Job wish his friends would
- 39:54get what he got? No.
- 39:56He was deeply hurt by their charges.
- 39:58So in a spirit of accountability, he warned them
- 40:02with the general principle that wrongdoers are judged.
- 40:05In due course, they would be punished for falsely accusing
- 40:09him. And that wraps up the entire.
- 40:13Chapter 19. So if you thought this was

- 40:23I try to stay in the word daily, I miss a few here and there but

- 40:31it if they're short. So anyway, hope you have a good
- 40:34day.
