- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, Welcome to on Base, presented by All Star Pieces.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Today All Star Pieces, I am your host, Mookie Betson.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Today we got my boy, a two time All Star
- 0:11Speaker 1: in the twenty twenty one Silver Sucker.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Nick Castianos, How you doing, Bro? What's up? Man? What's up? Everybody?
- 0:17Speaker 2: Happy to be here, Thanks, Thanks for coming on the show.
- 0:22Speaker 2: It's really good.
- 0:23Speaker 1: We haven't had a whole lot of conversations, but I know,
- 0:26Speaker 1: I want to say, it was like two All Star
- 0:28Speaker 1: Games ago we had.
- 0:28Speaker 3: We were lockermates right next to each other in twenty
- 0:32Speaker 3: three in Seattle. Twenty three in.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Seattle, and that was a real first time really getting
- 0:36Speaker 1: to kind of like.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Talk outside of baseball.
- 0:41Speaker 4: Just like the brief moments on the bases.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, saying that's not really like a whole lot
- 0:46Speaker 1: of talking, but that All Star game, that was our
- 0:50Speaker 1: first time talking.
- 0:50Speaker 2: And now I really.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Can get to talk to you, get to know you
- 0:55Speaker 1: a little bit, fans can get to know you a
- 0:56Speaker 1: little better. Sure, I know you're very blunt in all
- 0:59Speaker 1: of your interviews, So if the fans don't know you
- 1:02Speaker 1: by now, you know.
- 1:04Speaker 3: I won't be as blunt because I don't consider as
- 1:06Speaker 3: an interview. I just consider it's a conversation.
- 1:07Speaker 2: This is a conversation.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Sometimes sometimes with media, I'll have my guard up because
- 1:11Speaker 3: I know that they'll ask questions because they're just trying
- 1:14Speaker 3: to paint their narrative.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, so like I don't know, especially being
- 1:19Speaker 2: in Philly too.
- 1:20Speaker 1: I mean, you know, Philly has got to be a
- 1:22Speaker 1: tough market when it comes to writers and all the
- 1:24Speaker 1: type of things. Yeah, and so they you know, you know,
- 1:28Speaker 1: the questions I hate are like what happened when you
- 1:32Speaker 1: didn't catch the ball. It's like, well, I didn't catch
- 1:35Speaker 1: the ball. There's no other it just didn't happens.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Like that was it? You watched what happened?
- 1:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I swung and missed at that pitch. It's just
- 1:46Speaker 3: I tried to hit it and it didn't work.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Like they'll be like, what did you see when you
- 1:50Speaker 1: hit this double in the ninth ninth inning to go ahead?
- 1:53Speaker 1: Like I saw a pitch and I swung and I
- 1:55Speaker 1: hit it.
- 1:56Speaker 3: There was there was one interview I had try I
- 2:00Speaker 3: got to walk off hit against the Braves I think
- 2:03Speaker 3: last year. And I mean the question the way that
- 2:08Speaker 3: this lady asked the question was it was marvelous to
- 2:13Speaker 3: say the least.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Well, I mean they're just trying to do their job.
- 2:16Speaker 1: So we we try and answer the answer questions respectfully, but.
- 2:19Speaker 3: No doubt, you know, you know, it's also a wonderful thing.
- 2:22Speaker 3: You can answer a question with.
- 2:24Speaker 2: One word, okay, so explain.
- 2:26Speaker 3: So a lot of times, if you notice, like media will,
- 2:30Speaker 3: we'll ask a question in the way so that they
- 2:33Speaker 3: can go off of what you want to say. But
- 2:35Speaker 3: a lot of times they answer the question for you
- 2:38Speaker 3: the question, so all you have to do is say
- 2:40Speaker 3: like yes or no.
- 2:43Speaker 2: And then I'm assuming you've tried this. Oh I do
- 2:46Speaker 2: it all the time. Do it all the time, and
- 2:48Speaker 2: it works for you.
- 2:50Speaker 4: I mean, it answers, it gets the point across.
- 2:52Speaker 1: So they'll say, like in the ninth inning, you got
- 2:55Speaker 1: to slider down in a way and it looked like
- 2:57Speaker 1: you just tried to poke it in the right field.
- 2:59Speaker 2: What were you doing? Yes?
- 3:01Speaker 3: Well no, because you finished saying like what you finished
- 3:03Speaker 3: saying like what were you doing? Like just like hey,
- 3:06Speaker 3: that pitch on the outer half of the plate. Were
- 3:08Speaker 3: you just trying to take what you can get there
- 3:10Speaker 3: and you know, serve something the other way?
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yes?
- 3:15Speaker 1: Oh okay, So there's no explanation, and then you just
- 3:18Speaker 1: let them ask another question if they want to.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Sure, but sometimes like if they'll if they leave an
- 3:23Speaker 3: open ended question, well okay, now I can have room
- 3:27Speaker 3: to articulate.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Okay, nice word by the way, oh thank you. Yeah,
- 3:30Speaker 1: it sounds like your vocabulary. Vocabulary is very extensive.
- 3:36Speaker 4: I get that from my mom.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Okay, A lot of times like, well, my mom was
- 3:39Speaker 3: reprimanding me as a kid. She's word thank you. She
- 3:44Speaker 3: would be yelling at me, and I'm gonna i'mna be honest,
- 3:47Speaker 3: I really wouldn't know what she was saying half the
- 3:49Speaker 3: time because there was a lot of syllables and all
- 3:51Speaker 3: the words she was using.
- 3:53Speaker 1: And you adopted that, and now you just throwing nice
- 3:57Speaker 1: words throughout the day.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Do you have like a word of the day that
- 4:00Speaker 2: you try and use.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Well, the word of the day for me has been
- 4:05Speaker 3: pretty much the same for a while, and it's just grateful.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Okay, okay, so grateful. Do you try and use that
- 4:12Speaker 2: or you just trying to live by the way.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Well, I try to not use it like in a sentence,
- 4:16Speaker 3: but just try to remember to be grateful, because I
- 4:20Speaker 3: think that a lot of times, like when life starts
- 4:23Speaker 3: going really fast. And then as you have like high
- 4:27Speaker 3: expectations or you try to figure out the way something
- 4:31Speaker 3: should look in your mind or whatever, and it doesn't
- 4:34Speaker 3: quite look like that, you can get ungrateful. But then
- 4:38Speaker 3: just by practicing gratitude every day, you can kind of
- 4:41Speaker 3: just man, this is awesome. Like I'm here in La,
- 4:45Speaker 3: I'm talking to Mookie Best. Yeah, I got a baseball
- 4:48Speaker 3: game tonight where you are for sure?
- 4:51Speaker 1: Okay, all right, So I like that. We'll get some
- 4:54Speaker 1: more into into some of those things. But first I
- 4:56Speaker 1: want to start and play this game called on base,
- 5:00Speaker 1: off base. It's essentially whether you in or out on
- 5:03Speaker 1: this on these on these topics cool.
- 5:06Speaker 2: The first one is, uh, you still use a flip phone?
- 5:09Speaker 2: Are you in or out on that? Out? Okay?
- 5:11Speaker 1: So, but it says in twenty twenty one you try
- 5:15Speaker 1: to simplify your life a little bit.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I didn't try. I did.
- 5:17Speaker 4: It was amazing. It was amazing. Twenty twenty one.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Was you had a flip phone?
- 5:21Speaker 3: Then, yeah, I got rid of it in spring training,
- 5:23Speaker 3: and then I picked it back up when my second
- 5:27Speaker 3: son was born, auto only because then, like Jess wasn't
- 5:30Speaker 3: coming on the road with me anymore. You know, like
- 5:33Speaker 3: I wanted to kind of be there and like and
- 5:35Speaker 3: not be there but like FaceTime and see and like,
- 5:37Speaker 3: oh so you couldn't kind of I kind of just
- 5:39Speaker 3: like man like and I got back into it. But
- 5:44Speaker 3: do I miss Do I miss the days of how
- 5:45Speaker 3: simple I feel like twenty twenty one was, And ironically
- 5:49Speaker 3: it was the best year of.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Baseball I had in my life.
- 5:52Speaker 3: And I just feel like everything was there wasn't a
- 5:56Speaker 3: lot of noise, which was nice.
- 5:58Speaker 1: So all because all because of a flip phone. I mean, like,
- 6:02Speaker 1: what what else did you simplify?
- 6:06Speaker 2: That? Was it? That was the flip phone?
- 6:07Speaker 3: Well, I mean, yeah, I had only a few contacts,
- 6:11Speaker 3: like my teammates numbers. I had an iPod that didn't
- 6:16Speaker 3: have like an old school iPod that didn't have Internet connections.
- 6:18Speaker 2: So did it have the screen on it or no?
- 6:19Speaker 2: It was just like the shuffle it was I don't remember.
- 6:24Speaker 2: It was like the iPod touch. Oh okay, yeah, I.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Download the music on it, but like didn't have internet,
- 6:31Speaker 3: so it was it was nice to not be like
- 6:35Speaker 3: connected to this invisible like all unlimited internet world.
- 6:42Speaker 2: So when you when you did that, you felt like.
- 6:49Speaker 1: When you were younger, like when when you didn't have
- 6:52Speaker 1: not responsibilities and stuff was the wrong term, but when
- 6:56Speaker 1: you didn't have like other things going on, like you
- 7:00Speaker 1: could really just kind of focus and be in the moment.
- 7:02Speaker 2: No doubt.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Okay for sure, you know, like now that I have
- 7:05Speaker 3: it back on my hip, it's good for information. But
- 7:07Speaker 3: I mean it's just really easy to go down rabbit
- 7:10Speaker 3: holes when you have a device that's way smarter than
- 7:13Speaker 3: you'll ever be, you know, so like your curiosity can
- 7:17Speaker 3: get numbed if you have something that can always feed it.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Right, yeah, yeah, And that makes sense. And that's when
- 7:23Speaker 2: the flip phone. So why don't you go back because
- 7:25Speaker 2: you can't you can't FaceTime. There's a big part of
- 7:27Speaker 2: me that wants to, uh clip phones, don't. I mean,
- 7:31Speaker 2: dude it, I don't even know if they make flip phones.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Well, I got an old old school and my biggest
- 7:35Speaker 3: selling point was it was like fourteen ninety nine a month,
- 7:38Speaker 3: unlimited text and calls anywhere in the world. That's sign
- 7:42Speaker 3: me up. You just can't face time. Well, you can't FaceTime.
- 7:45Speaker 3: You don't have like text message like I was t
- 7:47Speaker 3: nine texting like where you like or like with being
- 7:50Speaker 3: being being binging big, you know, like you used to
- 7:53Speaker 3: do back in the day.
- 7:54Speaker 4: So like if there was a lot of times I
- 7:56Speaker 4: would get.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Messages and I would read it and I'd be like,
- 7:58Speaker 3: that's not important to me for me, okay for five minutes,
- 8:03Speaker 3: you know, but also too, like no group chats like YouTube,
- 8:09Speaker 3: no Twitter, no Instagram.
- 8:12Speaker 1: But there's also something kind of like you said, refreshing
- 8:14Speaker 1: in that where like now after game, to say you
- 8:20Speaker 1: do good or do bad either way, your feed is
- 8:24Speaker 1: literally like.
- 8:27Speaker 2: For sure, and it's something to not even seeing none
- 8:30Speaker 2: of that.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Of course, because technically it's gone and it shouldn't affect
- 8:34Speaker 3: how you're going about it right now exactly. Not saying
- 8:36Speaker 3: that like I was perfect in twenty one, but I
- 8:39Speaker 3: was really good at staying in the moment, and that
- 8:42Speaker 3: being away from the world helped because the world was
- 8:46Speaker 3: only what was in front of my face.
- 8:48Speaker 2: And they're going to be fair fair weather whether you
- 8:51Speaker 2: do good or do bad. Okay, So next thing, when
- 8:55Speaker 2: you retire, you'll catch a game in the bleachers. You'll
- 8:59Speaker 2: see in the bleachers and watch a game.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Would I, Yeah, I'm in all of it. Yeah, that
- 9:05Speaker 3: gold card, I'm gonna use.
- 9:07Speaker 1: That use the gold car. You see Rizzo right there,
- 9:10Speaker 1: he would Yeah, I know he missed it.
- 9:12Speaker 3: So I was actually talking with Jason Hayward shout out,
- 9:17Speaker 3: and he said that he had this planned in his mind,
- 9:19Speaker 3: that he wanted to do this for years. So, I mean,
- 9:22Speaker 3: while he was playing, he envisioned doing something like this,
- 9:24Speaker 3: sitting out there. And like the fact that Anthony was
- 9:28Speaker 3: able to do it, I mean, just good for him
- 9:31Speaker 3: and like.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Stuff like that. Career stuff like that.
- 9:33Speaker 1: People don't understand, like we don't get opportunities like that
- 9:38Speaker 1: to just go sit in the bleachers and enjoy a game.
- 9:41Speaker 1: And really, because we're always on the other side, right
- 9:43Speaker 1: We're always the ones that are yeah, I mean right now,
- 9:48Speaker 1: But like that means a lot to us, like to
- 9:50Speaker 1: go out and especially for him because he played with
- 9:52Speaker 1: those guys.
- 9:53Speaker 2: You know, he grew up in I mean, you know,
- 9:55Speaker 2: that was his life.
- 9:56Speaker 1: He won the World Series there, so really to get
- 9:59Speaker 1: to experience he probab I has never experienced that side,
- 10:02Speaker 1: you know.
- 10:02Speaker 3: I I look forward to the day hopefully that I'm
- 10:05Speaker 3: bored enough after I'm retired with baseball that I can
- 10:09Speaker 3: make my way over to a Marlins game.
- 10:12Speaker 4: So I grew up going and watching a lot of.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Marlins games growing up, so it's gonna come full circle.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Yeah, my dad was good friends with the picture they
- 10:18Speaker 3: had back in the day, Alex Fernandez, So like I
- 10:20Speaker 3: was in the stands for both of their World Series runs.
- 10:23Speaker 3: I got to go to World Series games as kids
- 10:25Speaker 3: and as a kid, So yeah, I'm definitely in ongoing.
- 10:30Speaker 1: And are you going to try and go to all
- 10:32Speaker 1: thirty stadiums to watch That?
- 10:34Speaker 3: Necessarily isn't on my bucket list because I've gone all
- 10:36Speaker 3: thirty stadiums to play, right, you know?
- 10:38Speaker 2: And I got three boys now at home, so you
- 10:41Speaker 2: know you're not time.
- 10:44Speaker 4: That's what I'm That's what I'm saying.
- 10:45Speaker 3: But like to be able to stay local and go
- 10:47Speaker 3: to my hometown stadium and watch the team that I
- 10:49Speaker 3: grew up like rooting for as a fan, to go
- 10:53Speaker 3: back and do that after like my career is over,
- 10:55Speaker 3: I'm in on that.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Okay, all right, all right? So whoever, I guess we
- 10:59Speaker 2: got couple, We got a little while for that. How
- 11:01Speaker 2: many more years you have left? I have one more
- 11:03Speaker 2: year after this year, and then how long do you
- 11:05Speaker 2: want to play?
- 11:06Speaker 4: Until I am not enjoying it?
- 11:09Speaker 2: Anymore. Okay, okay, so we don't know.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Well, it depends on the It probably depends on the
- 11:16Speaker 1: boys as well. Like once they start moving around and
- 11:18Speaker 1: they start playing, and.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Liam's all in, He's already traveled baseball, wing all these
- 11:22Speaker 3: perfect game nationals?
- 11:23Speaker 2: Is that hard to like?
- 11:25Speaker 1: Is it hard to know that he's going through the
- 11:29Speaker 1: same process you're going through?
- 11:31Speaker 2: But you want to be there for him? Obviously I do, but.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Uh, you know, Annabal Sanchez is on Miami said this, uh,
- 11:39Speaker 3: and it and it helped me shift my perspective a
- 11:42Speaker 3: little bit because he was he was retired. When he
- 11:44Speaker 3: told me this, he said, hey, like, I know you're
- 11:47Speaker 3: not there for all of his games, but just by
- 11:50Speaker 3: you being in a uniform and giving him the ability
- 11:53Speaker 3: to come in the clubhouse and be on the field
- 11:55Speaker 3: and watch the art of the game happening, he's learned
- 12:00Speaker 3: so much, right, and like you're with him when you're
- 12:03Speaker 3: not with him, so like, just chill out.
- 12:06Speaker 4: And enjoy the game.
- 12:08Speaker 3: The reason why that would weigh on me was, you know, subconsciously,
- 12:12Speaker 3: I want to be the same dad that my dad
- 12:14Speaker 3: was for me, and my dad was up my ass
- 12:16Speaker 3: from the moment I woke up in the morning until
- 12:19Speaker 3: you know, like I went to sleep at night. So
- 12:22Speaker 3: me not being as present as I would want to
- 12:26Speaker 3: be for Liam sometimes that makes me feel guilty.
- 12:29Speaker 2: But you also have a different opportunity than your pop sic.
- 12:33Speaker 3: You know, like my dad was a doctor teaching me
- 12:35Speaker 3: how to hit. You know, I've made my living off
- 12:39Speaker 3: of playing baseball. And as long as Liam wants to,
- 12:43Speaker 3: I'll be able to give back my wisdom.
- 12:45Speaker 2: To him for sure. For sure. So like you said, he,
- 12:47Speaker 2: like Annabel said, you're always there with him. Okay, So
- 12:51Speaker 2: what about this the ball meaning to foul, ball home
- 12:56Speaker 2: or whatever should always be given to the kid, to
- 13:01Speaker 2: a kid, Yeah, all in on that.
- 13:03Speaker 4: Well, I whenever I am.
- 13:08Speaker 3: I can't believe this, but whenever I'm like playing catcher,
- 13:13Speaker 3: I go, I always aim for a kid. Okay, you know,
- 13:15Speaker 3: but you always have that ambitious adult sometimes that will
- 13:18Speaker 3: come and grab it, you know. Yeah, this uh, you
- 13:24Speaker 3: know there is This woman was obviously mad about a
- 13:26Speaker 3: lot of other things in her life, right, so then
- 13:29Speaker 3: this one instance happened. So now like everything that she
- 13:34Speaker 3: has been mad about for years all came out in
- 13:38Speaker 3: this one moment where she feels like this man stole
- 13:41Speaker 3: her opportunity for happiness.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Like you said, it's a ball, I mean, like there's
- 13:45Speaker 2: so many, but I see that.
- 13:48Speaker 4: I don't just see a ball. I see a very
- 13:50Speaker 4: frustrated lady for years.
- 13:52Speaker 3: That felt like she's probably been getting the shit under
- 13:54Speaker 3: the stick and now this thing happened and she's like,
- 13:58Speaker 3: I'm not finishing second here, I need this for me,
- 14:02Speaker 3: you know. And yeah, completely was oblivious to the fact
- 14:05Speaker 3: that this man was getting it for his son.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Yep.
- 14:07Speaker 1: And yeah, and maybe she was giving it me, you know,
- 14:11Speaker 1: I'm just looking. Maybe she was giving it to her
- 14:14Speaker 1: grandson or her son or I don't know, we don't know,
- 14:18Speaker 1: but I would agree like she she probably had a
- 14:22Speaker 1: couple of demons in there.
- 14:23Speaker 2: But you know, it kind of it is what it is.
- 14:25Speaker 1: But yes, I do agree the ball should always go
- 14:28Speaker 1: to a kid, you know, But there are collectors out there.
- 14:33Speaker 1: There are people that when they go to the game,
- 14:34Speaker 1: they want a ball as well. So it's kind of
- 14:37Speaker 1: a thinking from a fan's perspective. It's kind of a
- 14:41Speaker 1: tough situation to because I want to get a foul ball.
- 14:43Speaker 1: I want to take my foul ball home. And if
- 14:45Speaker 1: Nick Cassiana has a foul ball. I want to take
- 14:47Speaker 1: it home, but you know there's a kid over there.
- 14:50Speaker 2: They probably are going to remember it a lot more
- 14:52Speaker 2: and it's going to mean more to them than than me.
- 14:55Speaker 1: So I definitely I agree with you. Yeah, the ball
- 14:58Speaker 1: always goes to the kid, and you know that hopefully
- 15:03Speaker 1: that woman is doing better today.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Well, I mean, the internet has let her have it,
- 15:08Speaker 4: so you know.
- 15:10Speaker 2: We'll see what did y'all say? Did y'all? So you
- 15:15Speaker 2: guys all saw that, right.
- 15:16Speaker 3: We saw it after the game and then after Bader's
- 15:20Speaker 3: locker was next to mine in Miami, so I was
- 15:22Speaker 3: there when our media relations came up explaining the situation
- 15:25Speaker 3: and then said like, hey, do you mind doing this?
- 15:27Speaker 3: And right now, you know, he's awesome, so he was
- 15:31Speaker 3: like of course and went over and took care of
- 15:33Speaker 3: the kid and his family and then some So.
- 15:35Speaker 1: It kind of got through the locker room of kind
- 15:37Speaker 1: of what happened like after the game. Okay, yeah, because
- 15:41Speaker 1: they're in the game, you're not going to the game.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I didn't know what was up and shout out to
- 15:45Speaker 1: whoever watched that situation of what happened and you guys
- 15:49Speaker 1: did something about it, So yeah, you know that definitely.
- 15:51Speaker 3: I think that was also Miami, like the Miami camera crew,
- 15:53Speaker 3: they were all over it.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Oh okay, yeah, so I mean ended up, you know,
- 15:58Speaker 1: and the dad there not doing a whole bunch.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Of arguing and all o this type of stuff. Being
- 16:02Speaker 2: the big person. Yeah, he's being the bigger man. And
- 16:04Speaker 2: look what what ended up happening. You know, he dave
- 16:06Speaker 2: his son even better opportunity. So shout out to the
- 16:10Speaker 2: dead there being a good dad and showing showing the sun.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Like you know, even through adversity, you can always still
- 16:16Speaker 2: be the bigger man.
- 16:17Speaker 1: So role model. There you go, exactly. Okay, so last one,
- 16:23Speaker 1: uncrustables are the best in game snack.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Hey, nothing will settle in over three going into your
- 16:30Speaker 4: fourth av like a grape jelly uncrustable.
- 16:32Speaker 2: I'll tell you that.
- 16:35Speaker 3: It's funny, is that usually Like so I don't eat
- 16:38Speaker 3: that often, but like during the games. But boom just
- 16:42Speaker 3: got buzzed up and in h and you know when
- 16:47Speaker 3: he's right. Alec is very good at not committing the pitches,
- 16:52Speaker 3: so he sees that any spin inside the zone, he
- 16:54Speaker 3: hammers it. But you know the plan is to get
- 16:57Speaker 3: him off that they'll go they go in and and
- 17:00Speaker 3: know so like you know, hands and wrists are so fragile,
- 17:04Speaker 3: you know, so he's just been buzzed one or two.
- 17:06Speaker 3: So like he uh, he got up and into the
- 17:09Speaker 3: point where like he fell down. So I was in
- 17:11Speaker 3: my little hiding spot feeding and then he came and
- 17:14Speaker 3: I just was like, hey, you know, like we got
- 17:15Speaker 3: that pitch too, you know, whatever you got to say.
- 17:18Speaker 3: And of course, now the whole world knows that I
- 17:20Speaker 3: enjoy uncrustables from time to time.
- 17:23Speaker 2: So do you have those at home?
- 17:24Speaker 4: I believe, so I don't eat them at home.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Now you eat them?
- 17:27Speaker 4: I only eat like in the dugout, like randomly.
- 17:30Speaker 2: You know, do you eat seeds? Are you seeds? Guy?
- 17:33Speaker 4: Gum and seeds?
- 17:34Speaker 3: So like if I'm like, if I'm chewing a piece
- 17:38Speaker 3: of gum and I like the way the flow of
- 17:40Speaker 3: the game is going, I'll keep that piece of gum
- 17:42Speaker 3: in until like my I didn't like the way that was,
- 17:45Speaker 3: so like get it out of eat some seeds, and
- 17:48Speaker 3: then I'll put like some gum back in.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Okay. So it just depends on how you're feeling, how
- 17:52Speaker 2: the game's going, how the game's going.
- 17:53Speaker 3: But I usually like to be to have something in
- 17:56Speaker 3: my mouth so I don't start biting my nails and
- 17:59Speaker 3: fingers and stuff.
- 18:00Speaker 1: See, I I used to. I used to do gum
- 18:07Speaker 1: and I heard that it's not good for your teeth.
- 18:08Speaker 1: So I stopped doing gum. Then I went to seeds,
- 18:12Speaker 1: and that's better for your teeth.
- 18:14Speaker 2: I don't think. I don't know. I never I never asked. Yeah,
- 18:19Speaker 2: I don't think it's better. I don't know.
- 18:20Speaker 3: I don't thank you.
- 18:24Speaker 1: You know, I'm on TV now. So I got my teeth.
- 18:26Speaker 1: My teeth were jack. My teeth are like this, so
- 18:29Speaker 1: I had to I had to get them all. I
- 18:31Speaker 1: had to get them fixed.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Well, what was you ever hear that song J crooked smile?
- 18:35Speaker 2: Yeah, but I don't.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I'd rather have a straight one, you know, if I
- 18:38Speaker 1: can get a straight smile.
- 18:39Speaker 2: If I had the ability to get a.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Straight wife, you care if it's straight or crooked.
- 18:43Speaker 2: She she she doesn't. There you go, yeah, she she doesn't.
- 18:48Speaker 1: And uh, but it was hard for me to look
- 18:50Speaker 1: in the mirror and see see like crooked teeth. You know,
- 18:53Speaker 1: for me, it was really hard. Yeah, yeah, it's really hard.
- 18:57Speaker 1: So that's that led to me getting getting my teeth. Fixed,
- 19:01Speaker 1: and in the process of getting my teeth fixed, you
- 19:03Speaker 1: cut out gum. I cut out gum.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Started with seeds, and I'll never forget when I was
- 19:10Speaker 2: in Boston.
- 19:11Speaker 1: It was in like the second inning, and I remember
- 19:14Speaker 1: diving for a ball and I swallowed about ten of them. Nice,
- 19:19Speaker 1: and I have not chewed seeds since. So I won't
- 19:22Speaker 1: play with anything in my mouth because I'm too scared
- 19:25Speaker 1: of swallowing seeds and then chewing gum is not yeah. Yeah,
- 19:30Speaker 1: So so now I just if I'm hungry the other game,
- 19:34Speaker 1: I just be hungry, and I probably should try to uncrustable,
- 19:38Speaker 1: though it seems like it works for you, so it's
- 19:40Speaker 1: probably a thing.
- 19:40Speaker 2: It's not always.
- 19:41Speaker 4: I mean, I don't think i'd eat an uncomfortable since
- 19:44Speaker 4: then it's just.
- 19:45Speaker 2: A rare occasion. Okay, it's just whatever, you're hungry.
- 19:47Speaker 3: Just yeah, if I'm just sitting there, it's like there's
- 19:49Speaker 3: a little bit of frustration and hungry.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Oh okay, so okay, okay, So all right, I want
- 19:56Speaker 1: to switch gears a little bit. You guys clinched the
- 19:58Speaker 1: postseason for the fourth straight season, and in February you
- 20:06Speaker 1: answered a question and you said, this team has less pressure.
- 20:10Speaker 2: As a team.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Only because I was listening to everything the media was
- 20:14Speaker 3: saying about us after we lost, after you lost twenty four.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Yeah, so what do you mean by.
- 20:20Speaker 3: That, Well, they were just shredding us to pieces because
- 20:23Speaker 3: because we lost, right, so that this isn't a team
- 20:27Speaker 3: that's going to do it. We need to burn the
- 20:29Speaker 3: house down, We need to get rid of everybody, you know.
- 20:32Speaker 4: Like players, coaching staff, everybody.
- 20:35Speaker 3: So I'm like, okay, great, So like this is the
- 20:37Speaker 3: opinion of the media that obviously we're not good enough. Well,
- 20:42Speaker 3: Dave Dombrowski kept everything pretty much status quo. Added a
- 20:45Speaker 3: little piece here, added a little piece there, but nothing major.
- 20:49Speaker 3: You know, like everybody was petitioning for us to get
- 20:51Speaker 3: one Soto and you know, like make a gigantic move,
- 20:54Speaker 3: which I think our largest move that we made during
- 20:56Speaker 3: the off season was acquiring Wizardo, which was a pretty
- 21:00Speaker 3: good move and he's an excellent piece to have. But
- 21:04Speaker 3: so that when they came when the question came around
- 21:06Speaker 3: and was like, oh, like do you feel the pressure
- 21:08Speaker 3: and this and that, my response like, no, we don't
- 21:10Speaker 3: have no pressure, because you guys said that we weren't
- 21:13Speaker 3: good enough, Like this isn't the team to win.
- 21:15Speaker 4: So if we don't win.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Like you guys just to get you guys can now
- 21:19Speaker 3: go about and just say that you guys are right,
- 21:21Speaker 3: like your opinion is right, which you should care about
- 21:24Speaker 3: because if you're in the media and you're expressing your opinion,
- 21:27Speaker 3: you hope that it's that it's an educational one and
- 21:30Speaker 3: it comes out to be true and if we do
- 21:33Speaker 3: win and that it's just a happy accident.
- 21:36Speaker 2: And so how do you feel about pressure, Like what
- 21:38Speaker 2: does what does pressure really mean to you?
- 21:42Speaker 3: Well, wanting a certain outcome very badly and not being
- 21:47Speaker 3: sure if it's going to happen or not. You know,
- 21:49Speaker 3: obviously in Philadelphia there is pressure to win. I think
- 21:52Speaker 3: in just like in La. Whenever you are in how
- 21:56Speaker 3: many organizations do you think are all in on winning?
- 22:00Speaker 3: Money is just I'd say probably four or five maybe
- 22:05Speaker 3: so Dodgers, Dodgers, Phillies, Phillies, yank Yankees, Mets, Yeah, the Mets, Mets.
- 22:12Speaker 2: I mean that's for Giants. Maybe you can argue, you
- 22:20Speaker 2: can argue with it like that. Nobody like just consistently
- 22:23Speaker 2: you're in year out, just puts money.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Like but now let's say like those like for those
- 22:27Speaker 3: four organizations. Because the owner is setting the precedent on
- 22:32Speaker 3: how important it is to win, the pressure is obviously
- 22:35Speaker 3: higher to be able to perform and deliver, which at
- 22:39Speaker 3: the end of the day, is something that is extremely
- 22:41Speaker 3: hard to do.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Right.
- 22:42Speaker 4: Winning is not easy.
- 22:44Speaker 2: It's never easy.
- 22:45Speaker 1: And I feel like, you know, when I think about pressure,
- 22:48Speaker 1: it's like it's a it's a it's a privilege in
- 22:55Speaker 1: a sense that not everybody gets the opportunity to have
- 23:01Speaker 1: to play for something all the time. And it's hard
- 23:03Speaker 1: to have to play for something all the time. It's
- 23:05Speaker 1: easy to go out there and just play, you know,
- 23:08Speaker 1: not really care about wins and losses, and you care
- 23:11Speaker 1: about your numbers and whatnot, but you're just kind of
- 23:13Speaker 1: playing baseball, right that that part's easy.
- 23:16Speaker 2: It's hard to go out.
- 23:17Speaker 1: There and like have to win all the time, like
- 23:21Speaker 1: to to put the jersey on and know that your
- 23:24Speaker 1: fans are going to the fans are gonna be up
- 23:25Speaker 1: your ass, sure your teammates, the front office, like everybody
- 23:31Speaker 1: is fully invested on winning this game today, Like not
- 23:34Speaker 1: a lot of people can very very few people can
- 23:37Speaker 1: say that, you know, and so to get that opportunity
- 23:40Speaker 1: to play from that perspective, you know. Fortunately for me,
- 23:44Speaker 1: I've been in two organizations that I don't know any different,
- 23:48Speaker 1: you know, And so.
- 23:49Speaker 4: Boston was more well, I mean Boston spending money again
- 23:53Speaker 4: now right.
- 23:54Speaker 2: A little more, a little more.
- 23:55Speaker 1: But I wouldn't say the money the money as much
- 23:59Speaker 1: in Boston as was like the pressure of just playing.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Like and when I was in Boston, it was more
- 24:05Speaker 1: like pressure because I was so scared to not play well.
- 24:09Speaker 4: Of course, well you're young, yes, exact.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Exactly, so you're scared to not play well because of
- 24:15Speaker 1: the outside perception.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Right, and then also the chains is getting sent down, it's.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Getting sent down.
- 24:22Speaker 1: You want to get you, you want to make your money, Like,
- 24:24Speaker 1: there's a lot of things that kind of go into
- 24:27Speaker 1: playing right, and and then you add on the pressure
- 24:30Speaker 1: of the city, you know, winning and whatnot, Like that's
- 24:34Speaker 1: a it's a it's a beautiful thing, something that you
- 24:38Speaker 1: definitely have to embrace.
- 24:39Speaker 2: It's a heavy thing. It's heavy, it's hard. It's heavy
- 24:42Speaker 2: and hard because if you don't. I've seen many that
- 24:45Speaker 2: come up and maybe don't play well or maybe don't
- 24:48Speaker 2: embrace the pressure, and it kind of not.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Crumbled crumbs them crumbles them is the wrong word. But
- 24:58Speaker 1: it just gets really hard to handle, you know, it
- 25:01Speaker 1: gets really hard, and.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Then you.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Almost kind of fall out of love with the game
- 25:05Speaker 1: a little bit because it's like I wasn't playing the
- 25:08Speaker 1: game for all this extra pressure.
- 25:09Speaker 2: I was playing it because I love it, I know,
- 25:11Speaker 2: and so that's kind of how.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I view the pressure situation and so but being in it, man,
- 25:18Speaker 1: I mean, I wouldn't change that for the world. I
- 25:20Speaker 1: think the best place to play baseball is with some
- 25:22Speaker 1: type of pressure component to it.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Well, I think the best place to play baseball is
- 25:27Speaker 4: just a place.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Where you're in love with, you know what I mean. So, like.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Just being in a place where whatever source of inspiration
- 25:38Speaker 3: that is making you go out and allow all of
- 25:41Speaker 3: your emotions to come out while you're playing, so you're
- 25:44Speaker 3: really engaged in like in the moment, is what's going
- 25:50Speaker 3: to be the most beneficial, you know, because I think
- 25:53Speaker 3: also a lot of times people will go to the
- 25:55Speaker 3: big markets because they're chasing that big contract and they
- 25:59Speaker 3: think that like money is the answer, and then a
- 26:02Speaker 3: lot of that's another reason why they'll fall out of love,
- 26:05Speaker 3: right because they were somebody with an environment right where
- 26:10Speaker 3: they there was a feeling of who they were as
- 26:12Speaker 3: a baseball player. They achieved so much, and then as
- 26:16Speaker 3: the reward, they wanted all of this financial security and
- 26:19Speaker 3: then they go somewhere else and then it's like now
- 26:21Speaker 3: you're starting over from scratch and you don't have that
- 26:24Speaker 3: luxury of like finding yourself when you're getting paid millions
- 26:30Speaker 3: and millions of dollars. Like the success when you're young
- 26:34Speaker 3: is almost like this happy accident that keeps on like
- 26:37Speaker 3: happening over and over again. And then now it's it's
- 26:39Speaker 3: like it becomes like this euphoric feeling as you're building
- 26:42Speaker 3: this staircase. Well, now you get this contract, you go
- 26:45Speaker 3: to a different environment, and now there's there's no accidental
- 26:48Speaker 3: success like Juan Soto, like his amazing season that he's having,
- 26:52Speaker 3: Like it's not an accident. You need to do that.
- 26:55Speaker 3: You're making fifty million dollars. That's why you're making fifty million, correct,
- 26:58Speaker 3: So I mean also hats off to him, bro, he's
- 27:00Speaker 3: able to go there and you know, put up those
- 27:03Speaker 3: numbers like that.
- 27:03Speaker 4: But winning they need to make the playoffs.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, there's there's just there's just so many components,
- 27:12Speaker 1: and some of that is not not necessarily on him,
- 27:17Speaker 1: I know, obviously it you know, he's got to help
- 27:20Speaker 1: the team win in more ways than just on like
- 27:22Speaker 1: just performance on the field.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Maybe there's a leadership component. I don't know. I don't
- 27:27Speaker 2: know these things. I'm just talking.
- 27:28Speaker 3: But there's a lot, really, there's a lot of different
- 27:31Speaker 3: hats you have to wear when you when you make
- 27:35Speaker 3: you know, or any any over twenty, you know, like that,
- 27:39Speaker 3: because you are expected to bring something to the team
- 27:42Speaker 3: that isn't just statistical value anymore exactly. You know, like
- 27:47Speaker 3: you almost like you remember when you were coming up,
- 27:49Speaker 3: like what these veterans could do to make you feel
- 27:52Speaker 3: a little bit more comfortable in your own skin when
- 27:54Speaker 3: those pockets of insecurities were coming up, just to keep
- 27:57Speaker 3: you on track, you.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Know, I remember Big Poppy Petroya. Those these are the
- 28:02Speaker 1: guys that.
- 28:05Speaker 2: I probably learned the absolute most from And.
- 28:11Speaker 1: It was really about not just playing the game of baseball,
- 28:15Speaker 1: but like you said, like how to treat your teammates
- 28:19Speaker 1: and how to like go about the day, how to
- 28:21Speaker 1: set an example. I mean, it's it's hard to explain,
- 28:25Speaker 1: but it wasn't just getting hits, you know, it was
- 28:30Speaker 1: about so much more than getting hits and being a
- 28:34Speaker 1: guy like Big Poppy and those guys that are making
- 28:37Speaker 1: the thirty men.
- 28:37Speaker 2: I was like, that's everybody else is looking to them
- 28:42Speaker 2: no matter what.
- 28:42Speaker 3: You know, no matter what, whether you have a zero
- 28:45Speaker 3: for four or a four for four day, you know,
- 28:47Speaker 3: are you the same guy exactly?
- 28:49Speaker 2: Are you true? Exactly? Yeah?
- 28:50Speaker 1: Yeah, Like it's important. It's important to be the same
- 28:54Speaker 1: guy and understand that. But it's it's hard, man, It's hard.
- 28:58Speaker 2: It's hard. So all right, so I want to talk
- 29:00Speaker 2: a little bit of it now.
- 29:03Speaker 1: About you know, your your platooning in the outfield, which
- 29:06Speaker 1: is something kind of new for you now, right, and
- 29:09Speaker 1: you played one.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Hundred and sixty two last year. Yeah, shout out to
- 29:12Speaker 2: you for.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Playing one hundred and sixt two games, because that's a lot,
- 29:14Speaker 1: especially being an outfielder.
- 29:16Speaker 2: But now you have a little platoon situation.
- 29:19Speaker 1: How't necessarily, I don't really mean, like, how do you
- 29:22Speaker 1: feel about that? But what do you do? What do
- 29:26Speaker 1: you have to do different to prepare? Because playing every
- 29:29Speaker 1: day is like, you know, you show up, you get
- 29:31Speaker 1: your routine, and you kind of stick to your routine.
- 29:34Speaker 1: It's really similar every day. But now if you're platooning.
- 29:37Speaker 1: That means you may go two or three games in
- 29:39Speaker 1: a row not playing, so your routine has to change.
- 29:42Speaker 1: And so like what what what have you done differently
- 29:44Speaker 1: to kind of fit into this platoon role right.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Now, I'm just trying to be like as most plastic,
- 29:50Speaker 3: like as placid as possible another saice work, So I
- 29:55Speaker 3: don't The thing is, I don't know what my routine
- 29:56Speaker 3: is yet.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Okay, so you got to figure it out. This is
- 29:58Speaker 2: your first time.
- 29:59Speaker 3: My first time is my first time doing it, you know.
- 30:02Speaker 3: The second half has kind of been tough, dealing with
- 30:04Speaker 3: some patelltonitis and my left knee that happened when.
- 30:08Speaker 4: We were playing the Yankees.
- 30:10Speaker 2: So I mean.
- 30:12Speaker 3: Sometime like as humbling as this is to say, because
- 30:15Speaker 3: I get fomo when I don't play, like sitting down
- 30:17Speaker 3: on the bench and like watching is hard because I've
- 30:20Speaker 3: never done that before.
- 30:22Speaker 2: But just.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Pick up the guys, right, like yeah, making sure because
- 30:29Speaker 3: also I don't I can hit myself silly. I don't
- 30:32Speaker 3: want to do that either, you know, likes like, I
- 30:37Speaker 3: don't want to overcomplicate it really, so I'm just it's tough, right,
- 30:42Speaker 3: like I really I really don't. I can't give you
- 30:44Speaker 3: a good answer on that, because I'm still trying to
- 30:46Speaker 3: figure it out. Yesterday was you know, two days ago
- 30:50Speaker 3: was the first time I came off the bench since
- 30:52Speaker 3: I replaced you in the twenty three All Star Game.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Oh wow, okay, you know, so like.
- 30:56Speaker 3: Came in in the sixth inning and against a lefty
- 31:01Speaker 3: tie game. To know, I got to get this guy in,
- 31:05Speaker 3: so you know, I didn't come from really the cage
- 31:08Speaker 3: or anything either. It's just like, hey, like are you
- 31:10Speaker 3: good right now? Yeah, So this.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Is like a it's a learned behavior coming off the bench.
- 31:17Speaker 1: It's not something that people have. There's an art to it.
- 31:20Speaker 1: There's there's really an art to coming off the bench.
- 31:22Speaker 3: For sure, only because like when using like starting like
- 31:26Speaker 3: you're starting today. You knew that you were starting when
- 31:28Speaker 3: you woke up this morning, right, like you know what
- 31:31Speaker 3: your day is going to be, Like I don't, you know,
- 31:34Speaker 3: I can I can get there and I can sit
- 31:37Speaker 3: on the bench and I can be there for all
- 31:39Speaker 3: nine innings.
- 31:40Speaker 4: I can get there.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Something happened in the bottom of the first inning, and
- 31:43Speaker 3: now I'm playing eight innings.
- 31:46Speaker 2: I don't know, And there's something to that, Like you said,
- 31:48Speaker 2: I mean Baseball players as a whole have this on
- 31:54Speaker 2: and off switch, right, no doubt.
- 31:56Speaker 1: And if you're not playing every day, you.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Don't know when you're gonna play. You can't go about
- 32:04Speaker 2: your day with the switch on, because like that's a
- 32:06Speaker 2: that's a different But you can't go about your day
- 32:10Speaker 2: with it off either, because if you go with it on,
- 32:12Speaker 2: you like drive yourself crazy.
- 32:14Speaker 1: But if you go with it off, then you're not
- 32:16Speaker 1: like locked in, I feel like, and so I feel
- 32:18Speaker 1: like there's a balance that you have to that, you.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Know what I'm saying.
- 32:21Speaker 4: So it's funny. I feel like where I'm at now
- 32:25Speaker 4: is like.
- 32:27Speaker 3: It's off, but I feel like I just got to
- 32:29Speaker 3: remember who I am and I can turn it on.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, which is hard.
- 32:33Speaker 1: It's that's really hard to do, especially in an instant,
- 32:37Speaker 1: like to just say all right, it's on and then
- 32:39Speaker 1: get in the game. And then the situation in the
- 32:41Speaker 1: game X, Y and Z is like you don't have
- 32:44Speaker 1: time to ease your way into it because I'm assuming
- 32:46Speaker 1: you know, when you come in to face the lefty,
- 32:48Speaker 1: there's there may be there's probably some type of run
- 32:50Speaker 1: scoring situation, unless it's just leading off any whatever, you
- 32:52Speaker 1: can kind of ease your way into that. But you
- 32:54Speaker 1: know it's second and third, two outs, and they bring
- 32:57Speaker 1: in a lefty to face whoever Kepler, and you come
- 33:00Speaker 1: in to hit, Like, how do you turn it on
- 33:03Speaker 1: that fast?
- 33:03Speaker 2: Because I don't know that I'd be able to do that.
- 33:06Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 33:07Speaker 3: At the same time, like I don't really have a choice, right, Yeah,
- 33:10Speaker 3: you don't have a baseball as a team sport. I
- 33:12Speaker 3: got paid this money to help the Phillies win a
- 33:14Speaker 3: World Series.
- 33:16Speaker 4: So this is what's being asked of me.
- 33:18Speaker 3: I have to put everything that I know to the
- 33:20Speaker 3: side and do the best I can to answer what
- 33:23Speaker 3: to do, what's asked of me to do in the moment.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Yeah, because I'm thinking, man, like when I have off days, right,
- 33:32Speaker 1: very few, I'm not like my I'm off all completely
- 33:38Speaker 1: completely off, and then I got to pinch hit in
- 33:42Speaker 1: the eighth.
- 33:44Speaker 2: You know, it's just whatever.
- 33:46Speaker 1: I don't know how to turn it on, Like, I
- 33:49Speaker 1: don't know how to like mentally lock in in that situation.
- 33:53Speaker 1: And I've tried. I've tried. I've done everything you know
- 33:56Speaker 1: to prepare. I do my routine, I hit in the cage,
- 33:59Speaker 1: I do BEP routine. I do everything the same, But
- 34:02Speaker 1: it's just something about that switch that when I when
- 34:06Speaker 1: I'm playing every day, I can keep on, but when
- 34:09Speaker 1: I'm not, it's off.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:12Speaker 4: I'm a lot like that too. I'm either all the
- 34:14Speaker 4: way on or all the way off.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Yeah, So learning how to have that like flicker is new.
- 34:22Speaker 3: But what what I think is that if Liam ever
- 34:26Speaker 3: goes through something like this, at least I can speak
- 34:28Speaker 3: from a place of having gone through it in some experience.
- 34:31Speaker 2: You have some experience.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Speaking of Liam, I do want to talk a little
- 34:35Speaker 1: about a little bit about your boys.
- 34:36Speaker 2: You said you got three boys three How old are they?
- 34:39Speaker 4: Liam is twelve, Otto is three, Kobe is four months?
- 34:43Speaker 3: Okay, So is it Kobe after Kobe, after Kobe Bryant,
- 34:48Speaker 3: but Kobi instead of Kobe?
- 34:50Speaker 2: Okay, okay, okay.
- 34:51Speaker 1: And so Liam, he's in the scene, he's playing ball.
- 34:55Speaker 1: What what do you tell.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Him before he goes to these tournaments and whatnot that
- 35:02Speaker 2: because there's probably some extra pressure on him just from
- 35:06Speaker 2: his outside peers, just from being my son, from being
- 35:09Speaker 2: your son, and so how do you help him with that?
- 35:12Speaker 3: Well, first and foremost is I need to make sure
- 35:15Speaker 3: that he's playing because he wants to, and not because
- 35:18Speaker 3: he feels like he has to, right, because I know
- 35:21Speaker 3: the road that's ahead of him. Right, It's not easy
- 35:24Speaker 3: and it's not necessarily enjoyable either. You know, there's a
- 35:27Speaker 3: lot of rewards that can come from it, but having
- 35:29Speaker 3: to give up all your summers from high school to
- 35:32Speaker 3: go to these showcases to you know, hopefully you can
- 35:37Speaker 3: get drafted or end up going to a college, but
- 35:41Speaker 3: end up you get to just professional ball. You go
- 35:43Speaker 3: to the minor leagues, twelve hour bus rides, all these games.
- 35:47Speaker 3: The amenities aren't great, you know. Now everybody throws a hundred,
- 35:51Speaker 3: you know, so like it's it's a tough life. So
- 35:54Speaker 3: it's just making sure that he wants to do it, okay,
- 35:57Speaker 3: now that you want to do it. Now if the
- 36:01Speaker 3: only thing that I'm going to demand is your effort,
- 36:03Speaker 3: your enthusiasm, because I know when Liam is enthused, and
- 36:07Speaker 3: I know when he's I don't want to say dead inside,
- 36:10Speaker 3: but I know when you're not there.
- 36:14Speaker 2: What was there?
- 36:15Speaker 1: I mean your son, I mean, I'm sorry, he's your son.
- 36:18Speaker 1: So you know everything about him.
- 36:19Speaker 3: There's a lot of me and him, you know, like
- 36:22Speaker 3: just and even to the way like his mind works
- 36:24Speaker 3: and everything.
- 36:26Speaker 4: That was his first one. He's hit a bunch now.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Well, I mean he's doing you've been a bunch.
- 36:33Speaker 3: Like for the tournaments, I tell him, So I want
- 36:35Speaker 3: him to learn how to play aggressive. So I'm like, hey,
- 36:39Speaker 3: like lead the tournament and extra base hits, lead the tournament,
- 36:42Speaker 3: and stolen bases, make a diving play, you know, so
- 36:46Speaker 3: like that way, those are extremely athletic things that you
- 36:50Speaker 3: have to be engaged to do, right, So like be
- 36:54Speaker 3: ready hit to share the ball if you're on first
- 36:57Speaker 3: or you're on second, like make something happen. And if
- 37:00Speaker 3: you're in the outfield, do something crazy because he played
- 37:02Speaker 3: center field.
- 37:03Speaker 1: So and then let's say after you know, because you're
- 37:08Speaker 1: playing two and three games a day, especially his age.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Yeah, well on Sundays, on Sundays, on Sundays especially, Yeah,
- 37:15Speaker 3: does he call you, like on Saturday after he played
- 37:17Speaker 3: or whatever?
- 37:18Speaker 1: Does he call you and let you know how the
- 37:20Speaker 1: game went? Or are you watching it on do you
- 37:22Speaker 1: watch it as much as possible?
- 37:23Speaker 2: Like how does I'm not playing?
- 37:24Speaker 3: Yeah, like this past tournament altho. On two tournaments ago,
- 37:30Speaker 3: like just and I were like walking the kids and
- 37:34Speaker 3: walking the dogs in the morning and we're like watching
- 37:36Speaker 3: the stuff on Game changing.
- 37:38Speaker 2: He went off that tournament.
- 37:39Speaker 3: He ended up going I think seven for seven with
- 37:42Speaker 3: some walks one MVP.
- 37:43Speaker 2: So how does how does that make you feel as
- 37:45Speaker 2: a dad?
- 37:45Speaker 1: Like you know what I'm saying? Are you proud? Are
- 37:48Speaker 1: you just like I mean whatever? How does that make
- 37:50Speaker 1: you feel?
- 37:51Speaker 3: Both obviously very proud, you know, but not proud as
- 37:54Speaker 3: in like ha ha ha ha, you know, like laugh
- 37:56Speaker 3: laugh happy.
- 37:57Speaker 2: More.
- 37:58Speaker 3: You know, the more the talent presents itself, the more
- 38:00Speaker 3: responsibility can be there to make sure that if you
- 38:04Speaker 3: want to exercise and get the most out of it,
- 38:06Speaker 3: you know, like it's almost like starting to lay the
- 38:09Speaker 3: pieces on.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Okay, like if this, if.
- 38:12Speaker 4: This can happen, how are we going to make it happen?
- 38:17Speaker 2: That's hard. That's you got to see it.
- 38:19Speaker 1: You got to see it, like being that you are
- 38:22Speaker 1: his dad and you see professional side.
- 38:25Speaker 3: Well, just as far as I don't know if he's
- 38:27Speaker 3: going to be a manor league race do whatever, Like
- 38:29Speaker 3: I don't know, but the it, you know what I mean,
- 38:34Speaker 3: Like you what do you want it?
- 38:37Speaker 2: I see the it? You know?
- 38:39Speaker 4: Is he going to be tough enough?
- 38:41Speaker 3: Is he going to be able to get hit with
- 38:42Speaker 3: a hundred mile on our fastball and dig back in
- 38:44Speaker 3: the box. Is he going to be able to have
- 38:46Speaker 3: to deal with some coaches that don't see the it
- 38:49Speaker 3: and are trying to, you know, push him down. Does
- 38:52Speaker 3: he have those things to get over those obstacles that
- 38:55Speaker 3: can come in the way.
- 38:57Speaker 2: I don't know yet.
- 38:58Speaker 3: You know, I can only be the best sounding board
- 39:01Speaker 3: for if that happens, it's gonna end up being his
- 39:04Speaker 3: choice on what he wants to sacrifice to be able
- 39:06Speaker 3: to make this happen.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Right, and so, I mean, he's got you. And obviously
- 39:11Speaker 1: you use big words, so you'll you'll.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Be Sometimes more fancy words doesn't necessarily mean right or wrong.
- 39:19Speaker 3: You know, Like you ever listen to a lawyer talk.
- 39:21Speaker 3: They can they can make it. They can make sound,
- 39:24Speaker 3: you know, finessing you to do something you don't want
- 39:26Speaker 3: to do sound real entice.
- 39:28Speaker 2: But you know, you know what it is, you know
- 39:31Speaker 2: what he needs.
- 39:32Speaker 1: So he'll be fine as long as he just like
- 39:35Speaker 1: you said, if he if he loves it, you know
- 39:37Speaker 1: he didn't he did.
- 39:38Speaker 2: As long as he's not doing it for you, you
- 39:40Speaker 2: know that that's what makes it correct.
- 39:43Speaker 3: I want to make sure that he's just he's doing
- 39:45Speaker 3: it because he wants to do right.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Yeah, So I want to get a little bit about
- 39:49Speaker 1: you from South Florida, right, Yeah, and you grew up
- 39:55Speaker 1: playing ball, obviously, what other sports did you play?
- 39:58Speaker 3: I played a half a season of soccer, that's it,
- 40:00Speaker 3: and that's it half.
- 40:02Speaker 2: So what made you want to play soccer? Oh? I
- 40:05Speaker 2: was five years old, six years old.
- 40:06Speaker 3: All my other friends on like my baseball team, and
- 40:09Speaker 3: like you know, the parents are all friends too. We're like,
- 40:11Speaker 3: we're gonna we're going to play soccer this year. So
- 40:15Speaker 3: signed up for that and they stuck me, like on defense.
- 40:18Speaker 3: So all I did was get kicks in the shins
- 40:20Speaker 3: and it was like that, I'm over it. And so
- 40:22Speaker 3: I went to go play baseball at PSN, which was
- 40:24Speaker 3: a different signed up late.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Did you You didn't play basketball or anything? So you
- 40:29Speaker 2: just played baseball your whole life. Yeah.
- 40:31Speaker 4: Me being a major League baseball player was my dad's dream.
- 40:34Speaker 3: So you know, what was your dream making my dad happy?
- 40:38Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 40:39Speaker 3: You know, he came over, they came over from Cuba
- 40:43Speaker 3: with the whole castro thing. Everybody in my family on
- 40:47Speaker 3: my dad's side are doctors, so he was pretty good
- 40:51Speaker 3: to the point where like he could get like a
- 40:52Speaker 3: Division two scholarship, you know in baseball. University of Miami
- 40:56Speaker 3: was like, hey, go here, you do well, you can
- 40:59Speaker 3: whatever it is where they some sort of thing with
- 41:04Speaker 3: what is it called scholarships or I don't know how
- 41:07Speaker 3: that works. But and then my grandfather shut that down
- 41:10Speaker 3: pretty quick, like, yo, we didn't come over to the
- 41:13Speaker 3: land of opportunity for you to play a game, like
- 41:16Speaker 3: you need to go be a doctor. That's what my
- 41:18Speaker 3: dad went to go do.
- 41:19Speaker 1: So he ended up. So a lot of your family
- 41:23Speaker 1: as doctors on my dad's side, on your dad's side
- 41:26Speaker 1: of the family. And did your mom play sports?
- 41:28Speaker 3: Yeah, my mom played softball, Okay, I saw she was athletic.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Okay, so she loves she's locked in obviously your dad
- 41:36Speaker 1: as well.
- 41:37Speaker 2: But my dad is locked in baseball.
- 41:38Speaker 3: For me, wasn't a choice if as a kid, if
- 41:40Speaker 3: I was grown up and I was sick, I would
- 41:42Speaker 3: stay home from school to be able to feel good
- 41:45Speaker 3: enough to go play in this game. Then yeah, he
- 41:48Speaker 3: always had me like on two teams. So I would
- 41:51Speaker 3: play my age group in the tournaments on the weekends,
- 41:53Speaker 3: and then I would play on another team.
- 41:55Speaker 4: That was like a year older than me. So like
- 41:57Speaker 4: I'd get my.
- 42:00Speaker 3: Shit kicked in during the week and then I would
- 42:02Speaker 3: go be the man on the weekend.
- 42:03Speaker 2: And so how do you how do you think that
- 42:08Speaker 2: your dad.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Not forcing because forcing is the wrong term, but like
- 42:12Speaker 1: really being hard on you about baseball. How do you
- 42:15Speaker 1: think that shaped you into the player you are today?
- 42:21Speaker 4: Well, I'm stubborn, I'll tell you that.
- 42:23Speaker 2: You know, I'm.
- 42:27Speaker 4: I'm never It's really hard for me to.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Like not.
- 42:33Speaker 3: Play, to not want this at bat, to not uh,
- 42:39Speaker 3: I'm out. It's like, and I give this a left
- 42:42Speaker 3: of my dad too. It's kind of like a weeble wobble,
- 42:44Speaker 3: like I'm gonna get knocked, I'm going to come back up,
- 42:47Speaker 3: and I'm gonna damn I got knocked twenty times in
- 42:50Speaker 3: a row.
- 42:50Speaker 4: Well, I'm going to come back up, you know.
- 42:52Speaker 3: And it's just I don't know if it's just the
- 42:54Speaker 3: nature of you know, being my dad's kid or Cuban
- 42:59Speaker 3: men and you know, just kind of being proud about that.
- 43:04Speaker 3: But I think that a lot of kids would have
- 43:10Speaker 3: not been able to take as.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Serious as it was.
- 43:14Speaker 3: But it was just that good combination where I could
- 43:17Speaker 3: I could take it, you know, like the more like
- 43:21Speaker 3: I had the spark, so the gasoline didn't put out
- 43:24Speaker 3: the fire. Okay, you know, because sometimes their parents are
- 43:27Speaker 3: too much. The kid will just I'm not doing this.
- 43:30Speaker 3: We're also too like I was good so being able
- 43:34Speaker 3: to know and look around like man, like I'm the
- 43:36Speaker 3: best one on this field. And then also too like man,
- 43:40Speaker 3: my dad's super proud of me, Like that's those.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Are too good. Those are two good feelings. How did you?
- 43:46Speaker 1: I guess I want to know this because my dad
- 43:50Speaker 1: was there hard. I mean, he would let me do
- 43:51Speaker 1: whatever I wanted to do as far as sports, and
- 43:54Speaker 1: like he would always tell me if I didn't play well.
- 43:56Speaker 1: He was always telling me like, man, the pros don't
- 43:58Speaker 1: always get four hits the game or three hits in
- 44:00Speaker 1: the game or whatever.
- 44:02Speaker 2: And you know, my dad is kind of was kind
- 44:06Speaker 2: of the.
- 44:06Speaker 1: Opposite, right I didn't play well, Like he would still
- 44:09Speaker 1: take me to go get ice cream or whatever. And
- 44:12Speaker 1: it was never hard on me in any way, form
- 44:14Speaker 1: or fashion.
- 44:14Speaker 2: And so I think.
- 44:17Speaker 1: I love I loved the game because I genuinely loved
- 44:20Speaker 1: the game, sure, and I love playing and I hear
- 44:23Speaker 1: like what I hear, you saying is like kind of
- 44:26Speaker 1: the opposite, right you you were not forced into the game,
- 44:29Speaker 1: but like your dad like made you play, and how
- 44:32Speaker 1: did you How did you not grow out of love?
- 44:37Speaker 1: Or like how did that that? Like the fire you
- 44:40Speaker 1: just said, how did it stay lit?
- 44:43Speaker 2: You know, because if you're doing something that's not necessarily
- 44:46Speaker 2: for you, well.
- 44:48Speaker 4: I can't say that it wasn't for me, you know,
- 44:51Speaker 4: because I did.
- 44:53Speaker 3: I enjoyed succeeding, right like I enjoyed once that I
- 44:58Speaker 3: was like man like kids from other neighborhoods and other
- 45:02Speaker 3: leagues like know who I am, you know, like once
- 45:04Speaker 3: like the start you start realizing like man, like I'm
- 45:07Speaker 3: good and other people know I'm good. And then man
- 45:10Speaker 3: like I'm good and I'm in ninth grade and you know,
- 45:14Speaker 3: I went to high school with devn Marero and Eric
- 45:17Speaker 3: Cosmer and them, so like, man, I'm getting noticed from
- 45:20Speaker 3: major league scouts, luckily because they came to see them.
- 45:22Speaker 3: But like wow, like yeah, they think I have a
- 45:26Speaker 3: chance to you know, so like that part, Yes, like
- 45:29Speaker 3: my dad's I don't necessarily have a choice, but I'm
- 45:32Speaker 3: also enjoying it, you know, So I can't say that
- 45:36Speaker 3: it was just like a job from the beginning. But
- 45:40Speaker 3: I think more than anything, like I just I also
- 45:42Speaker 3: love that euphoric feeling of performing, you know, like there's
- 45:46Speaker 3: nothing better when you come up in a big spot
- 45:48Speaker 3: and you succeed or you make a play or you
- 45:51Speaker 3: get a hit and then everybody is cheering for you.
- 45:54Speaker 2: It's like it's it's like a high mm.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean for me sometimes it's almost about that.
- 46:00Speaker 1: What drives me in those situations is like the insecurity
- 46:04Speaker 1: of failing, like what are the perception and not necessarily
- 46:08Speaker 1: that I care about it, but I don't want to
- 46:11Speaker 1: give other people the opportunity to say something negative that's
- 46:15Speaker 1: that happened, regardless it is it is, but it's it's
- 46:18Speaker 1: kind of what drives me. It drives me in those
- 46:21Speaker 1: situations like, Okay, I don't want to give none of y'all,
- 46:25Speaker 1: I don't want I don't want to give any of
- 46:27Speaker 1: you the ammunition to write in an article that.
- 46:31Speaker 2: But here's the thing.
- 46:32Speaker 3: Here's the thing, dude, And Jason has helped me a
- 46:34Speaker 3: lot with this. The only opinions that I honestly care
- 46:38Speaker 3: about are the ones that have carried the stick for.
- 46:41Speaker 4: The ones that have shut on the gloves and put
- 46:42Speaker 4: on the cleats.
- 46:44Speaker 2: You know, Like.
- 46:49Speaker 1: That makes I'm just saying what drives me, Like I
- 46:52Speaker 1: obviously they're going to write it, they're going to do this,
- 46:53Speaker 1: that and the other. And you're right, like they haven't played,
- 46:56Speaker 1: so there's no way that you could really say what
- 46:59Speaker 1: we should or should do.
- 47:00Speaker 2: For the guys that have played understand like you're going
- 47:03Speaker 2: to fail side.
- 47:04Speaker 3: And that doesn't mean that I haven't had people that
- 47:06Speaker 3: I've played jump my ship. But a lot of times
- 47:09Speaker 3: it's not for failing. It's because they can see behind
- 47:12Speaker 3: the curtain of the things that can be tweaked or
- 47:16Speaker 3: can be adjusted. It is, however, whatever whatever's going through, right,
- 47:19Speaker 3: and like, those are the opinions to me, right that
- 47:24Speaker 3: I care most about. And and also just to be
- 47:27Speaker 3: able to have the respect of the players right that
- 47:32Speaker 3: have been able to suit up that can be like damn,
- 47:34Speaker 3: like this kid's done it the right way.
- 47:37Speaker 1: And then I know when you got drafted by the Tigers, yep.
- 47:42Speaker 1: And then you start off playing.
- 47:44Speaker 3: Short, well, I was an amateur shortstop. Amateur short stop
- 47:49Speaker 3: my favorite position. I think I told you that on
- 47:51Speaker 3: the basis the fact that you're you're playing short stop now,
- 47:54Speaker 3: you know, like you just did that as you did
- 47:57Speaker 3: that as a kid, because I think I was like, man,
- 47:59Speaker 3: that'd be like if a team had me to do that,
- 48:00Speaker 3: like I'd be in heaven only because like playing shortstop
- 48:04Speaker 3: I loved as much as hitting. And then so like
- 48:07Speaker 3: baseball was just one It just the flow never stopped.
- 48:13Speaker 2: You know.
- 48:13Speaker 4: Also to my add kicks.
- 48:15Speaker 3: As soon as they took out a short stop, like
- 48:17Speaker 3: my add really started coming back, because then it was like, oh,
- 48:20Speaker 3: like hey, they lied to me and say, hey, you
- 48:22Speaker 3: can play short third base is going to be easy.
- 48:24Speaker 2: That's a lie. Because third base I.
- 48:26Speaker 3: Felt like I was a hockey goalie that was just
- 48:29Speaker 3: over there, just waiting for this missile to be hit
- 48:31Speaker 3: at me, you know. So then so I was an
- 48:37Speaker 3: amateur shortstop and then I played third base in the
- 48:40Speaker 3: minor leagues through a ball with Detroit. My batch started
- 48:45Speaker 3: progressing really fast, so they moved me to right field
- 48:48Speaker 3: for the last like thirty games of Double A. Then
- 48:52Speaker 3: in the Arizona Fall League they moved me to left field.
- 48:56Speaker 3: Right in Triple A, I played left field. In twenty thirteen,
- 48:59Speaker 3: I made my day as a left fielder, and then
- 49:02Speaker 3: we traded Prince Fielder uh to the Texas Rangers for
- 49:06Speaker 3: Ian Kinsler. And then I got a call the day
- 49:09Speaker 3: before Thanksgiving from Dobrowski said, hey, you're gonna go back
- 49:11Speaker 3: to third base in.
- 49:12Speaker 2: The big leagues. That's why I remember you.
- 49:14Speaker 4: So then you know, like then, my that I did
- 49:18Speaker 4: the best I could.
- 49:19Speaker 3: But honestly, like I was anxious over there, like the
- 49:22Speaker 3: game was so fast, and really I only had a
- 49:26Speaker 3: ball experience at that position.
- 49:28Speaker 2: So now when omarvs.
- 49:29Speaker 3: Scale is giving me the infield insign because there's a
- 49:32Speaker 3: guy on third less than two outs in John Carlo
- 49:34Speaker 3: Stanton's hitting, I really want to give him the middle
- 49:36Speaker 3: finger and say, bro, you come play out here.
- 49:39Speaker 4: No shut you know, like Mike Trout's up.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Hey, never know, never know.
- 49:44Speaker 4: Listen, then I know he's not gonna but I'm gonna
- 49:46Speaker 4: play back.
- 49:47Speaker 1: That's funny, Okay. Yeah, so okay, And so then you
- 49:50Speaker 1: end up in the outfield and whatnot. So that I
- 49:52Speaker 1: mean that makes sense because the infield, man, like you know,
- 49:57Speaker 1: last year, I came in and I the game is
- 50:00Speaker 1: so fast, and it just it's hard, man, It's it's hard.
- 50:06Speaker 1: It takes a lot. And once you go to the outfield,
- 50:09Speaker 1: Like if you stay in the infield the game clock
- 50:13Speaker 1: and everything, you'll be okay. But once you go to
- 50:15Speaker 1: the outfield and you learn that game clock, it's it's hard.
- 50:20Speaker 1: Like especially people that go back and forth, like I
- 50:22Speaker 1: don't even I don't even know how you do that,
- 50:25Speaker 1: you know, like going back and forth.
- 50:27Speaker 4: Yeah, Hernandez like amazing, amazing.
- 50:33Speaker 2: And it's it's seamless. He could play back and forth
- 50:36Speaker 2: in between innings.
- 50:37Speaker 4: He with his on switch is a different on switch.
- 50:39Speaker 2: His own switch is a different his, but his never
- 50:42Speaker 2: really turns off. Oh, I don't know him. I don't
- 50:44Speaker 2: know him. Knowing him and seeing him, I don't even.
- 50:47Speaker 1: I didn't even realize. I've been playing with KK for
- 50:49Speaker 1: like this, like my fifth or sixth year playing with him,
- 50:55Speaker 1: and his just never is off. And I think that's
- 50:58Speaker 1: the beauty of why, especially in the posts, why he's
- 51:01Speaker 1: so good because he never turns off, and he'll be
- 51:04Speaker 1: on for nine innings, sitting on the bench, and I
- 51:07Speaker 1: think it is fascinating for someone to do that, and
- 51:11Speaker 1: he has really learned and embraced that role of coming
- 51:16Speaker 1: off the bench or you know, playing every third, third
- 51:19Speaker 1: or fourth day or whatever.
- 51:20Speaker 3: I also think to be able to be really good
- 51:22Speaker 3: at that, you have to be able to get lost
- 51:25Speaker 3: and loving the concept of team.
- 51:27Speaker 2: No, yeah, you have to, you know, because it's not
- 51:29Speaker 2: about you because at all.
- 51:31Speaker 3: But some of the best performers get lost in the
- 51:33Speaker 3: art of their own performance, and then in turn, because
- 51:36Speaker 3: they're so talented, they help and can carry the team
- 51:39Speaker 3: exactly right, so to go and to learn how to
- 51:43Speaker 3: do both, then you can kind of sit back and
- 51:46Speaker 3: look at the team from a completely different lens, you know.
- 51:49Speaker 4: So you know, I can from being on the outside.
- 51:52Speaker 3: I've never been around Key K, but I can tell
- 51:54Speaker 3: that he's just he's an asset to winning a baseball game,
- 51:57Speaker 3: whether he's playing or not. Right, Yeah, And that's just
- 52:01Speaker 3: And I've never spent a moment with that guy in
- 52:04Speaker 3: the locker room.
- 52:04Speaker 4: That's just from me watching.
- 52:07Speaker 1: You see exactly And you said lost in the in
- 52:11Speaker 1: the art of their own performance. I want to segue
- 52:15Speaker 1: into the artists, which is you sure where did that
- 52:21Speaker 1: come from?
- 52:22Speaker 2: Uh?
- 52:24Speaker 3: Well, I started making some creations as a kid growing up.
- 52:29Speaker 2: What's my man's name with the thro Bob Bob Ross,
- 52:32Speaker 2: Bob Ross, Yeah, you say you you and Bob You'll
- 52:34Speaker 2: cousins or something.
- 52:36Speaker 4: Hey, I wish have you ever watched one of the
- 52:38Speaker 4: shows from beginning to end?
- 52:40Speaker 2: Not from beginning to end, but I've watched.
- 52:42Speaker 4: I challenge you to do that.
- 52:43Speaker 2: Watch it from beginning.
- 52:45Speaker 3: I promise you on the inside you will feel different
- 52:47Speaker 3: from you watch to when it's over.
- 52:50Speaker 2: So why don't you do it? Since you're an artist
- 52:52Speaker 2: you're talking about watch Bob Ross. No, not watch b
- 52:54Speaker 2: Bob Ross.
- 52:55Speaker 4: You mean like make a show and paint and do
- 52:57Speaker 4: all that.
- 52:57Speaker 2: You're an artist.
- 52:58Speaker 3: That's not that I don't Well, first off, I'd like
- 53:02Speaker 3: to say we're all artists right right, You're just in
- 53:06Speaker 3: doing what you're doing.
- 53:07Speaker 4: Look at all the things that you're creating.
- 53:09Speaker 3: You're creating a baseball career, you're creating a family, you're
- 53:11Speaker 3: creating a podcast, you're creating an idea that is Mookie Bets.
- 53:15Speaker 3: Look at all the artists that we have right now
- 53:16Speaker 3: that are making this creation come to life. So first off,
- 53:20Speaker 3: let's understand the context of how I use the word
- 53:24Speaker 3: artist and what it How that ended up starting was
- 53:31Speaker 3: in twenty eighteen. This is where I got to give
- 53:34Speaker 3: credit to my wife. Was we had an off day
- 53:38Speaker 3: and you know, like I was the game was getting
- 53:40Speaker 3: a little bit fast.
- 53:41Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 53:41Speaker 4: She's like, hey, you're not talking to anybody, You're painting
- 53:45Speaker 4: all day.
- 53:46Speaker 3: Great, So I and I got lost. Fourteen hours went
- 53:51Speaker 3: by like that, just creating, and like after at the
- 53:55Speaker 3: end of it, I'm like, all right, well, I want
- 53:57Speaker 3: to go sign my name, and a lot of the
- 53:59Speaker 3: things that I was making, I really couldn't give that
- 54:01Speaker 3: much credit to myself because I felt like I was
- 54:03Speaker 3: inspired by everything around me. So I'm like, I'm gonna
- 54:06Speaker 3: put this on pause real quick. So I just signed
- 54:08Speaker 3: it artist, right, But that's not as like I'm not
- 54:11Speaker 3: giving myself credit to that.
- 54:13Speaker 4: It was just like a holding.
- 54:14Speaker 3: It was just like it was like an LLC, like
- 54:16Speaker 3: I'm going to hold, like I'm holding this for now,
- 54:19Speaker 3: you know. So then it kind of just came whenever
- 54:21Speaker 3: I would get an idea and I would make something
- 54:23Speaker 3: that I just wanted to convey a message, because I
- 54:26Speaker 3: feel like a lot of times my avenue of creating
- 54:29Speaker 3: is like I have this thought, but I want to
- 54:31Speaker 3: convey a message to somebody and I can say this
- 54:33Speaker 3: through art, So like I'll do that and then I'll
- 54:36Speaker 3: just put that stamp there because I think it's going
- 54:39Speaker 3: to be interesting to see what comes out about that
- 54:42Speaker 3: when I can take this thing that is baseball, that
- 54:44Speaker 3: has been in my brain since I was a kid
- 54:47Speaker 3: and put it down.
- 54:49Speaker 2: I do.
- 54:50Speaker 1: I have a quote from Picasso that I want to
- 54:52Speaker 1: I want to hear you dissect. Sure, learn the rules
- 54:57Speaker 1: like a pro, Sure to break them like an artist,
- 55:00Speaker 1: no doubt.
- 55:01Speaker 2: How do you feel about like, what does that mean
- 55:02Speaker 2: to you? Well? First off, how beautiful that is? Right?
- 55:08Speaker 3: So if a lot of times when I hear like
- 55:11Speaker 3: there's a lot of rules rules apply to structure. Art
- 55:15Speaker 3: is the absence of structure. It's creativity in its purest form.
- 55:20Speaker 3: So when somebody can go in and learn the rules
- 55:25Speaker 3: of an entity like a company or a school, or
- 55:32Speaker 3: like this podcast, there are some rules. I better not
- 55:35Speaker 3: just go off the cuff and start saying crazy stuff
- 55:37Speaker 3: because it's going to.
- 55:38Speaker 4: Get edited out for sure, you know.
- 55:40Speaker 3: But if somebody can immerse themselves so deeply into corporation,
- 55:48Speaker 3: I don't even know the right vocabulary word to articulate
- 55:50Speaker 3: what I'm trying to say, to learn it where you
- 55:53Speaker 3: can understand it now, and then you can be intelligent
- 55:58Speaker 3: enough to break them with your creativity.
- 56:02Speaker 2: It's like perking them with with with staying within them.
- 56:05Speaker 3: If that makes sense, No doubt a little bit, because
- 56:08Speaker 3: not not like the not like you don't come in
- 56:10Speaker 3: with a wrecking ball, right and just completely wreck shop.
- 56:14Speaker 4: You're able to come in.
- 56:15Speaker 3: You learn it, you respect it, you take part in it,
- 56:19Speaker 3: and now you can see where you can adjust it.
- 56:21Speaker 1: Right, you can make it better and not necessarily better,
- 56:24Speaker 1: put your own twist on it, whatever it is that
- 56:28Speaker 1: makes Yeah, that's what I that's what I hear.
- 56:30Speaker 2: Is like you got to learn.
- 56:33Speaker 1: Where the where the guardrails are, to see where you
- 56:36Speaker 1: can play and then make it all, make it your own.
- 56:40Speaker 3: Essentially purest art can't be controlled. Right, it's art, right,
- 56:44Speaker 3: you know what I mean. So there's no right or wrong.
- 56:46Speaker 3: There's no right or wrong. It's somebody can look at
- 56:49Speaker 3: one thing and see nothing but beauty and good, and
- 56:57Speaker 3: somebody else can see that same thing and just have
- 57:00Speaker 3: the darkest and most evil feelings attached to it.
- 57:05Speaker 2: And that's I guess that's part of being an artist and.
- 57:09Speaker 1: Embracing your creations and whatever it is, right, it did
- 57:15Speaker 1: not necessarily be painting, but whatever.
- 57:17Speaker 2: Like for me, my art is when I think about
- 57:21Speaker 2: it playing baseball. Like I'm not the biggest guy, I'm
- 57:23Speaker 2: not the fastest guy. I'm not the strongest guy, most
- 57:26Speaker 2: athletic guy, but like that's part of my art, right,
- 57:29Speaker 2: My art is being able to be an athlete and
- 57:33Speaker 2: to be able to do everything and some type of
- 57:38Speaker 2: in my own way. Right, Like I may I can hit.
- 57:41Speaker 1: Thirty homers the same way you can hit thirty homers,
- 57:43Speaker 1: but mine are going to go three rows deep where
- 57:46Speaker 1: years go thirty rows deep.
- 57:47Speaker 4: But they all count, they.
- 57:49Speaker 2: All count the same. Sure, my way of going about
- 57:52Speaker 2: it is different.
- 57:52Speaker 1: So it's really I think it's really important, you know,
- 57:55Speaker 1: talking now, it's like to understand what your art looks
- 57:59Speaker 1: like and then embrace it, like stay, embrace your own
- 58:03Speaker 1: art because not everybody's going to look the same, and
- 58:05Speaker 1: not everybody's going to see your own your art the
- 58:08Speaker 1: way you.
- 58:08Speaker 2: See your hold out.
- 58:09Speaker 3: And then the biggest way to kill artistic creativity is
- 58:13Speaker 3: through comparison, you know, so you know, you look, you
- 58:18Speaker 3: get caught up in what Major League Baseball's marketing and
- 58:22Speaker 3: who's the most popular and who's this, who's that, and
- 58:24Speaker 3: then you're like, well, I want to you know, like
- 58:27Speaker 3: maybe maybe I could do it like that, and maybe
- 58:28Speaker 3: I could do it like this, you know, and you
- 58:31Speaker 3: can really lose.
- 58:34Speaker 2: Yourself.
- 58:34Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like draw your own picture, bro, as best
- 58:37Speaker 3: you can, as best as you're getting rid of the
- 58:38Speaker 3: phone helped me for that year.
- 58:40Speaker 2: Really, draw my own picture? Makes sense? Ye, that makes sense.
- 58:43Speaker 1: Okay, So before I let you go, man, this is
- 58:48Speaker 1: something that I haven't heard before, So I really want
- 58:53Speaker 1: to hear why and Scooby Doo.
- 58:57Speaker 2: Is your favorite superherou.
- 59:00Speaker 4: Well answered the question, you know, but what is.
- 59:05Speaker 2: It about Scooby Doo? Maybe because I think everybody likes
- 59:11Speaker 2: Scooby Doo.
- 59:11Speaker 5: Right, I love Scooby Doo growing up. But you said
- 59:13Speaker 5: he's a superhero. Sure, so can you learn me why
- 59:18Speaker 5: he's a superhero. I can definitely learn you where he's
- 59:21Speaker 5: a superhero.
- 59:23Speaker 3: Well, usually superhero has a superpower, okay, right, Scooby Doo
- 59:29Speaker 3: is a dog and he can talk, right, yes, Scooby
- 59:33Speaker 3: Doo also well, superheroes usually use their super power to
- 59:41Speaker 3: help people. Well, Scooby Doo is a dog that can
- 59:46Speaker 3: talk and solves mysteries and helps people that are in
- 59:51Speaker 3: a sticky situation because somebody behind a mask is causing
- 59:57Speaker 3: some sort of problem and is you know, doing criminal
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: stuff and here comes this talking dog and this group
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: of friends and they solve the mystery.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: And so do you still watch Scooby Doo? It's on
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: my TV now.
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: And again, I have kids, I'd rather when whenever it's
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: up to me. Obviously, when the grandmas are in the house,
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: I don't know what I'm My parenting advice goes out
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: the window because you know, they know more than me.
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: But whenever I get to choose a TV show for
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: my kids to watch, I'll always go to the older
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: cartoons because I feel they're slower and the colors and
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: everything are not as like bang bang bang in your face,
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: changing this that you know. So I'll put on like
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: nineties Scooby Doo or a Curious George or Rats, stuff
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: like that rug Rats, you know, Hey Arnold, just because
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: I feel like the colors and stuff are softer, but
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: also like the plot plays out slower, so there's a
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: little bit more patience involved in watching that show than
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: all of the new cartoons and stuff that are on now.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: So last question, who would be your top five superheroes? So,
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: I mean Scooby Doo has to be in there.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: So Scooby Doo's obviously in there because if I didn't,
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: now there'd be a gigantic up or call me a phony.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: Because Scooby Doo.
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: So Scooby Doo's Top five superhero.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: Who else? Top five superheroes? Superman, Batman, spider Man.
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: I like Batman a lot, Batman, Bruce Wayne, Okay, I
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: like Batman.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: I don't even know like because they all they all
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: kind of do the same thing. So there's not like
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: a one that stands out the most for me.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: Well, I'm you know, everybody can and you know just
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: oh the Avengers or those or that. You know, you
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: know what superhero I like that brings a smile to
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: my face is the raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: Oh nice, Okay, okay, okay, he makes me smile. You
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: don't have to go through five because I mean, uh,
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: that would be you know, you don't want to regularly.
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: You probably don't remember you remember quail Man?
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: Quail Man?
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: You ever remember the cartoon Doug Funny. I'm a little
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: bit older.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: Than you, Yeah, a little bit Doug Funny. I just
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: remember there wasn't a cartoon named Doug. Doug. Yeah, Doug
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: that's the same.
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, that Doug had.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: Like his.
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: Like his in his notebook and stuff like, where he
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: was confident and he was able to conquer all the
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: things that were giving him trouble in high school. And
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: I don't even know what's if you was in high
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: school or not, but it was Quailman.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: Mm okay, Okay. So that's so you don't like, not
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: necessarily you don't like, but you like superheroes that have
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: some some artistry to them, not just the simple the
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: normal stuff. Not just the normal go save the city.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: You want some context, some personality when it goes to well.
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: I just think that those kinds of superheroes are a
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: little bit more meaningful because they can really resonate with
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: the common person in everyday life. It's kind of hard,
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: like the Hulk is my favorite superhero because when I
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: get angry, you know, there's or you know, iron Man,
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: where I'm gonna like. Iron Man is awesome, Robert Downey Jr.
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: Awesome But it's so far, you know from, it's so
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: far from what can actually like happen. So a lot
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: of so I would relatability first, I feel like it's
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: more powerful than just above and beyond imagination like Superman.
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: Like damn, it's awesome to be able to fly out
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: in the orbit and go that and then go fast
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: and make a tornado come down and shoot laser beams
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: and knock down a whole building.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: You know, but it's not real.
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: It's not real, hey, Bruce, Wayne.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: Real real lishly depends which ones you want, like the
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: New Batman with Robert Pattinson.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: Great Batman.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: Okay, I haven't seen it, but I need to. I
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: need to watch that, make sure. But first I want
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: to watch Scooby Do. I need to get back on
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: my Scooby Doo.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: He Scooby Do.
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: We'll decompress you, that's for sure.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm gonna get back on it on my on
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: my flip phone. I'm gonna see if motoroll or somebody
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: can send me a new razor or something and we
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: can go from there.
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: Hey, you're gonna be saving a lot of money, that's
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: for sure in California.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: Sign me up.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: So all right, man, I know we got to go
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: to work, brother, So thanks for coming on.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: It is really good. I got to finally talk talk
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: to you.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: I you know, you hear a lot about who you
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: are and and like, but I never really got into
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: talk and everybody says Nick, he's awesome, X Y and
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: Z boom boom boom, And like I said, I'm that
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: time in Seattle, those couple of hours, a couple of
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: days we spent, I really got to know you a
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: little more and I was intrigued. And so now getting
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: to talk to you more, man, it's uh. I appreciate
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: you and your outlook on things, and like I appreciate
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: the type of dad you are because you really just
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: helped me, especially with my son. I know he's only
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: two now, but as he gets older, you know how
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: to go about it, because it's it was going to
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: hurt me to not be there for him.
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: Especially he contracts up.
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: I got he'll he'll be about eight or nine, so hell,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: I'll have a little time, right. But I just know
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: how important those years were because my dad was with
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: me starting when I was seven, you know, six and seven,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: as soon as I got on the scene. And so
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: I know how important having your dad there, and you know,
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: your your biggest fan and your supporter there, especially someone
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: like us.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: Right Gray Gray Area.
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: The Gray Area moments are the best moments, like the
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: car rides, you know, or the you know, like just
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: the little moments of like they just finished eating breakfast
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: or whatever, because as a kid sometimes it's hard to communicate,
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: you know, the more like you just kind of hang
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: around or whatever. Then you'll find those pockets at least
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: with my son where all of a sudden he's, oh,
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: he's telling me how he's feeling, you know, like oh
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: he's oh, he's like it's it's coming out because you know,
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: like you'll see when you pop in for this, tell
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: me about your day, what's going on, what's new with you,
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: how's school good, what's new?
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: Nothing?
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: Yeah, my daughter does that now, you know. Yeah, I
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: don't know what it's like having a daughter. That's got
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: to be another world.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: And the world will I mean, you've got three boys.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: I'm sure you'll keep trying to.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: But anyways, brother, like I said, man, thanks for coming
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: on the show.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: And good luck with everything. Brother.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: You know, hearing like I said here in your perspective
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: and everything, it really made me a fan of you.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: Like just and not just baseball, but just for you
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: in life. Thank you.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: Help nothing. I wish nothing but success for you. Before

- 1:07:37Speaker 3: If you can give him to his baseball team, they've freak.
