- 0:01Many people hold that the truth of existence is an either or
- 0:05proposition. If the universal forces create
- 0:09all of existence, then the individual is essentially an
- 0:13illusory conception. And on the other hand, if the
- 0:17individual is a real and separate entity, then the
- 0:21universal is somehow denied or disproven.
- 0:25It is, however, not necessary to go to either of these two
- 0:29extremes in our understanding of our existence in relation to the
- 0:34universal manifestation. Shriorobindo resolves this
- 0:38conflict in chapter four of The Life Divine, a chapter titled
- 0:43Reality Omnipresent. The universal is real, and each
- 0:49individual form, formation or being is also real, being
- 0:55constituted of, and being a Nexus of the action.
- 0:59For the universal forces, the individual is not wholly
- 1:04separate and independent, but is part and parcel of that
- 1:09universal creation, dependent on it and the forces that manifest
- 1:14for his own existence. There is a constant interchange
- 1:19taking place between this Nexus in the form of an individual
- 1:23being or formation, and the universal forces that are acting
- 1:27to create the existence we experience.
- 1:30These larger forces act upon us and condition and drive our
- 1:35responses and actions. Because they are not obviously
- 1:39palpable to our external senses in a direct way, we tend to know
- 1:44them primarily through their effects.
- 1:47There is, however, an intervening buffer that acts to
- 1:51receive the external impacts, and this is the aura or vital
- 1:56envelope. As a person becomes more able to
- 2:00experience the impacts on the aura, he is able to begin to
- 2:05have direct knowledge of the interchange that is taking place
- 2:09and thereby work to accept, modify, or reject the action of
- 2:15some of these forces. Sri Aurobindo writes Quote Each
- 2:21man has his own personal consciousness entrenched in his
- 2:25body and gets into touch with his surroundings only through
- 2:29his body and senses and the mind using the senses.
- 2:35Yet all the time the universal forces are pouring into him
- 2:38without his knowing it. He is aware only of thoughts,
- 2:43feelings, et cetera, that rise to the surface, and these he
- 2:47takes for his own. Really They come from outside in
- 2:51mind waves, vital waves, waves of feeling and sensation, et
- 2:56cetera, which take particular form in him and rise to the
- 3:01surface after they have got inside.
- 3:05But they do not get into his body at once.
- 3:08He carries about with him an environmental consciousness
- 3:12called by the Theosophists, the aura into which they first
- 3:17enter. If you can become conscious of
- 3:20this environmental self of yours, then you can catch the
- 3:24thought, passion, suggestion, or force of illness and prevent it
- 3:30from entering into you. If things in you are thrown out,
- 3:34they often do not go altogether, but take refuge in this
- 3:37environmental atmosphere, and from there they try to get in
- 3:42again. Or they go to a distance outside
- 3:46but linger on the outskirts or even perhaps far off, waiting
- 3:52till they get an opportunity to attempt entrance.

- 4:01Hidden Forces of Life, Chapter 4 Cosmic and Universal Forces,
- 4:06page 82 to 83 A reader asks in what way are these thoughts?
- 4:14Feelings not our own, are they not something that shows up as
- 4:18ours by the way of one's life Experience Is this not memory of
- 4:23sorts? What we do with these ingrained
- 4:27etheric thought patterns after recognizing we are not our
- 4:32thoughts, is within one's command response.
- 4:39The ego personality is a temporary construction that is
- 4:43created by and for the purposes of the universal consciousness
- 4:47as a Nexus or point of focus for the universal action.
- 4:53We try to identify with that ego personality and to the extent we
- 4:57do, we see all these thoughts and feelings as our own.
- 5:02When we emerge from the shadow of the ego personality, however,
- 5:06we can see a vast play of forces that drive what we think, what
- 5:10we feel and how we act. In the Bhagwad Gita, Sri Krishna
- 5:16responds to Arjuna who falls into confusion and declares he
- 5:21will not fight because he sees the ego play.
- 5:26In the course of the 18 chapter, Sri Krishna reminds Arjuna that
- 5:31all of the warriors that he believes he will be responsible
- 5:34for killing are destined to die. And he shows Arjuna the vision
- 5:40of the time spirit in the 11th chapter, an overwhelming vision
- 5:46that shifts him entirely outside the ego framework.
- 5:51It is true that we attach ourselves to specific thoughts,
- 5:55ideas, memories and feelings while we inhabit a particular
- 6:00formation of being. We thus take the universal
- 6:04forces that are working and appropriate them as if they are
- 6:07our own. That is due to our
- 6:10identification with the ego personality.
- 6:14When an individual shifts the standpoint away, he begins to
- 6:18see the play of the three gunas and the movement of energies
- 6:22that actually are the causative agents of the formed personality
- 6:26and its associations. Sri Ramana Maharshi asked the
- 6:31question, Who am I? At some point we can no longer
- 6:35accept the answer that I am a specific person in a specific
- 6:40body, living a specific life in specific associations and
- 6:46adopting specific ideas and emotional relationships.
- 6:50When we begin to identify with the divine element within us,
- 6:55then we recognize that we change bodies and lives as the body
- 6:59changes clothes. In the Tacteria Upanishad, the
- 7:04seeker goes successively through various stages of
- 7:07identification. Identification with the body,
- 7:11identification with the life energy, identification with the
- 7:15mind, identification with the causal plane of consciousness,
- 7:21and finally identification with bliss, which is an aspect of
- 7:25Satchidananda existence, Consciousness, Bliss.
- 7:31Each level is successively more subtle and more abstract, but
- 7:37has a greater reality than the temporary body life mind complex
- 7:41we inhabit temporarily. The ego personality as a
- 7:46temporary bubble does indeed act as if it is the doer of works
- 7:51and the knower. Can we really say that this is
- 7:55essentially the truth of the matter?
