- 0:05Speaker 1: two five Pro Football, the Insider.
- 0:07Speaker 2: I've covered the league a little while.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Chef Legwalll he's the balloon popper, he doesn't blow it up.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Brought to you VIY the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:16Speaker 2: i BDW Local sixty eight. Start with the jomp and
- 0:19Speaker 2: with the career.
- 0:20Speaker 1: It's Leggy on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five.
- 0:26Speaker 3: We're preparing as if Justin is going to be our quarterback.
- 0:29Speaker 3: I think that's the appropriate way to do it. Speculation
- 0:32Speaker 3: is a waste of time. Russell's heard he's not available
- 0:35Speaker 3: to us, and so, as you guys know, as a
- 0:38Speaker 3: general practice, man, I focus my energy on those that
- 0:40Speaker 3: are available in their readiness. Just saw Justin he just
- 0:46Speaker 3: finished a good workout here today and excited about maybe
- 0:50Speaker 3: going through a complete week with him. In terms of
- 0:53Speaker 3: the preparation process.
- 0:56Speaker 4: Jeff Legwald brought to you by the International Brotherhood of
- 1:00Speaker 4: Workers Jeff Legwell from ESPN i b e W Local
- 1:03Speaker 4: sixty eight. Start with the job and with the career, Jeff,
- 1:07Speaker 4: how big of a deal and if it's not a
- 1:10Speaker 4: big deal, it's not a big deal. Would it be
- 1:13Speaker 4: for Russell Wilson to start compared to Russell Wilson not
- 1:16Speaker 4: playing in terms of how the Broncos see this game, yeah,
- 1:20Speaker 4: I guess.
- 1:21Speaker 2: You know, I'm certain Sean Payton would say, you know,
- 1:25Speaker 2: it doesn't matter. That's in the past, we've we've done
- 1:29Speaker 2: all those things, and I do think Russell playing would
- 1:33Speaker 2: be probably a bigger issue for fans or you know,
- 1:39Speaker 2: on either side of the equation of fans that think rusted.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Okay here fans to think, you know, he was he
- 1:45Speaker 2: was awful. But I think in the actual locker room,
- 1:50Speaker 2: you know, certainly some of the guys who are closer
- 1:52Speaker 2: to him, like Courtland Sutton or you know, others like that,
- 1:56Speaker 2: may have different feelings. But I don't think from a
- 1:58Speaker 2: football perspective, you know, they would consider it a big thing.
- 2:03Speaker 2: But certainly, just from an interest standpoint, it would have
- 2:06Speaker 2: been intriguing, you know, to watch Russell Wilson play against
- 2:11Speaker 2: a Sean Payton coach team. So soon after the decision
- 2:15Speaker 2: to cod him.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Jethor, Broncos brought in a handful of wide receivers for tryouts,
- 2:21Speaker 1: including a familiar name and Kaden Davis, whom they actually
- 2:25Speaker 1: signed up believed it was that to the practice squad,
- 2:27Speaker 1: Jeff or okay squad.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yet Reynolds and de von Bailey were not on the
- 2:33Speaker 2: practice we're not practicing today. They were on a side
- 2:36Speaker 2: field with Garrett Bowles and Luke Wattenberg. So Claire crowd
- 2:42Speaker 2: on the side.
- 2:43Speaker 1: So I want to come back to that because that's interesting.
- 2:45Speaker 1: But my question with wide receivers, uh, doing our due
- 2:48Speaker 1: diligence here or are we looking for something?
- 2:52Speaker 2: Well? I think since two guys aren't practicing today, I
- 2:54Speaker 2: think that's probably the the near term thing. And if
- 3:00Speaker 2: you know, we don't, you know, it seems like one
- 3:04Speaker 2: somebody might be going to short term. I are, and
- 3:08Speaker 2: maybe they would promote a guy like David Sills to
- 3:12Speaker 2: the active roster and have a practice squad spot open.
- 3:16Speaker 2: So I think a lot of those gears are in motion.
- 3:19Speaker 2: But I do think it's a concern with both, you know,
- 3:24Speaker 2: Reynolds and Bailey. I mean that Broncos were limited enough
- 3:27Speaker 2: in the passing game and those two guys were the
- 3:30Speaker 2: leaders in receiving yards in Seattle and neither ones practice
- 3:34Speaker 2: in today.
- 3:35Speaker 5: Hey, and I know you watched the game, and now
- 3:38Speaker 5: knowing you you probably watched the game back and tried
- 3:40Speaker 5: to break it down. What did you see that maybe
- 3:43Speaker 5: you didn't see in that game live? In What confirmation
- 3:48Speaker 5: if any, did you have from what you thought you saw?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Well, I guess, Scott, you know, I just sort of
- 3:54Speaker 2: verified what I felt in real time, which was for
- 3:59Speaker 2: a much creativity and unorthodox things McDonald has done in
- 4:04Speaker 2: the past. They were pretty basic zone coverage team in
- 4:09Speaker 2: the game, and I don't think it should have been
- 4:13Speaker 2: that big of a riddle for the Broncos and bo
- 4:16Speaker 2: Nicks to figure out. But again, those are two really
- 4:19Speaker 2: good corners, and they allow you to do some things
- 4:23Speaker 2: in coverage other people can't do because you can single
- 4:25Speaker 2: them up and play all kinds of you know, man
- 4:29Speaker 2: zone combos and that type of thing. But I didn't
- 4:32Speaker 2: see the exotic coverage looks or even some of the
- 4:37Speaker 2: bailouts and diskies as I thought I would. They played
- 4:41Speaker 2: it a little more straight up, and maybe that's because
- 4:45Speaker 2: you know, they're putting in a new scheme there and
- 4:48Speaker 2: didn't have it all the way the way they wanted it.
- 4:50Speaker 2: But they what they did play, they played really well
- 4:53Speaker 2: and solid. But I still don't think it should have
- 4:57Speaker 2: been that perplexing to the Broncos, and I guess that
- 5:01Speaker 2: was my one takeaway from it all, And they will
- 5:06Speaker 2: certainly get more pressure this week in terms of the
- 5:11Speaker 2: pass rush than they did in from GM.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Jeff, you were always very careful to warn everyone to
- 5:18Speaker 1: maybe slow your role a little bit on the preseason.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Bo Nick's hype based off what he was looking at
- 5:23Speaker 1: in those defenses and everything. So I'm not sure what
- 5:26Speaker 1: your legitimate expectation was in game one of bo Nicks,
- 5:30Speaker 1: So I guess I'll just ask you, did that look
- 5:33Speaker 1: like what you thought it would or was it worse?
- 5:35Speaker 2: No? I got what I expected from a rookie who's
- 5:39Speaker 2: been thrown into the defense of the pool. And I
- 5:43Speaker 2: think you know some of what Sean Payton said after
- 5:47Speaker 2: the game about you know, he didn't get a lot
- 5:49Speaker 2: of help, I buy that for sure. And he didn't,
- 5:53Speaker 2: and they didn't protect very well at times, and I think,
- 6:00Speaker 2: you know, my personal opinion is, and I asked Sean
- 6:02Speaker 2: Payton after the game, did you really want to throw
- 6:04Speaker 2: the ball forty two times? And they, you know, depending
- 6:09Speaker 2: how you cut the some of the looks you know,
- 6:12Speaker 2: they could have. They they had roughly fifty dropbacks in
- 6:15Speaker 2: that game with the rookie quarterback in his first start,
- 6:18Speaker 2: and I just don't think that's a good recipe from
- 6:20Speaker 2: a planning standpoint.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I don't.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I don't put that on Bonecks at all. But it
- 6:27Speaker 2: was like they were determined that he not play like
- 6:31Speaker 2: a rookie when in fact he is a rookie, you know,
- 6:35Speaker 2: making his first start, and I don't. It just felt
- 6:38Speaker 2: like the team wasn't willing to sort of accept that
- 6:42Speaker 2: and deal with it because they bailed on a you know, yeah,
- 6:46Speaker 2: the run game wasn't working, but you still can't have
- 6:49Speaker 2: fifty dropbacks with the rookie quarterback and expect that to
- 6:52Speaker 2: go well. So I think that was my takeaway. I
- 6:56Speaker 2: saw the rookie I expected to see, but I don't
- 7:00Speaker 2: think he got much help in the infrastructure around him either.
- 7:03Speaker 5: Did they give up on estimating too quick? Yeah, I
- 7:06Speaker 5: mean at an explosive rum. I know he fumbled at
- 7:08Speaker 5: the end of him, but he couldn't see the film
- 7:10Speaker 5: of the field after that.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah. Two carries in the game. Again, it's not you know,
- 7:15Speaker 2: there should have been more carries all around. And you know,
- 7:18Speaker 2: again I think sometimes you know, you'll probably hear me
- 7:23Speaker 2: say it a lot, because I've said it a lot
- 7:25Speaker 2: over the years, but I am. I am completely and
- 7:28Speaker 2: always be fuddled in my time covering this league that
- 7:32Speaker 2: one bad running play means the run game disappears. But
- 7:36Speaker 2: coaches will stand there and watch twelve incompletions in a
- 7:39Speaker 2: pick and keep throwing the ball. And I've never understood
- 7:43Speaker 2: that thinking, but it's always existed. You know, they didn't
- 7:48Speaker 2: pull b O Nicks after he threw a bad interception.
- 7:51Speaker 2: They let him keep playing, you know, to pull a
- 7:53Speaker 2: guy after fumble on what was really a good play
- 7:57Speaker 2: by the defender. I never quite get that, but that's
- 8:01Speaker 2: just me, and I think they bailed on estimate. I
- 8:04Speaker 2: think they bailed on the run game as a whole
- 8:07Speaker 2: too early. And I always wonder why they're not willing
- 8:10Speaker 2: to work through the tough spots in the run game.
- 8:14Speaker 2: But again, they're more than willing to keep throwing in completions.
- 8:19Speaker 2: You know, over and over again.
- 8:20Speaker 5: I'm gonna go off base, I'm gonna go squirrel for
- 8:23Speaker 5: just a moment, please, But Leggy broke this guy down
- 8:28Speaker 5: for a couple of years Oldso any surprise at all
- 8:30Speaker 5: with the Cus offense and Pat Shermer call and plays
- 8:33Speaker 5: that you got three and four wide out and your
- 8:34Speaker 5: quarterback's always under the rest, and they won't change things.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Well, you know, Scotty, I know the schools of thought
- 8:40Speaker 2: on that is when you spread out, you're pulling defenders
- 8:44Speaker 2: away from the quarterback. And I do get that logic.
- 8:48Speaker 2: I just don't buy it on game day and I
- 8:50Speaker 2: never have. I'd rather have bodies in there around the guy.
- 8:54Speaker 2: But that's not the thinking. You know, they won't be
- 8:59Speaker 2: the first time I've been called outdated. So I just
- 9:04Speaker 2: contend more bodies around the quarterback is better. But that's
- 9:08Speaker 2: not the way the play callers think in college or
- 9:11Speaker 2: pro football right now.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Most of them just really quick. Jeff Legwell from ESPN
- 9:16Speaker 4: with us out there Broncos Park. If Bullsy can't go,
- 9:21Speaker 4: Matt parrots playing and if it's Pert, it's fine. Well,
- 9:26Speaker 4: how are you saying he's playing left tackle? Or would
- 9:29Speaker 4: they move things around? And I know TJ. Watt plays
- 9:33Speaker 4: over the you know, the right side more than the
- 9:35Speaker 4: left side. So I am just curious what in your opinion,
- 9:38Speaker 4: what what would they do if Bulls can't go.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I think they would stick with with Pert. I think
- 9:44Speaker 2: that's my gut in terms of that's how they've practiced.
- 9:47Speaker 2: You know, if if they changed that, they'll be departing
- 9:51Speaker 2: from how they practice through camp and even early on
- 9:55Speaker 2: here in the in the regular season, which doesn't mean
- 9:58Speaker 2: they wouldn't do it, but uh, it's certainly you know,
- 10:03Speaker 2: this is this has been the concern throughout the offseason.
- 10:07Speaker 2: The depth and the offensive line is not where they
- 10:09Speaker 2: want it to be. And Quinn Bailey's injury in camp
- 10:15Speaker 2: was you know, probably had far more impact on all
- 10:18Speaker 2: that than people wanted to think. And this this would
- 10:21Speaker 2: be an example of that. And if you know, if
- 10:24Speaker 2: you're going to have a backup left tackle, we don't
- 10:28Speaker 2: know that yet, but if you do, uh, and you're
- 10:31Speaker 2: gonna line up in three ys more than forty snaps
- 10:35Speaker 2: like you did Sunday against the Steelers, I think you're
- 10:38Speaker 2: asking for a problem.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Great stuff, Jeff, awesome job. We'll chuck you out later,
- 10:43Speaker 4: and good luck talking to Sean and being in the
- 10:45Speaker 4: luckroom today. It's always funny.
- 10:47Speaker 2: I am beloved. I appreciate it.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Okay,
