- 0:05Speaker 1: Is Elena Wood there, Helena Helena, Nightingale College. That's who's
- 0:14Speaker 1: bringing you this segment. Elena Wood from Nightingale College.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Good morning, Good morning. How's everyone doing today?
- 0:21Speaker 1: Well, I think it's I think it's the perfect time
- 0:24Speaker 1: to talk about the five Seas of mental health. That's
- 0:28Speaker 1: how I went down the list, and chardonnay is not there,
- 0:33Speaker 1: and neither's candy.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Oh yeah, no, those are those are both on the
- 0:38Speaker 2: agendam I see a few pages back?
- 0:41Speaker 1: Yeah, so what the five seas of mental health? If
- 0:47Speaker 1: you yes, if you do these things, it will well
- 0:51Speaker 1: maybe not insure, but help help your mental health.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Yes, support you in having good mental health.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 0:58Speaker 2: So the first is connection, thinking about relationships that we
- 1:03Speaker 2: build long term, deep, meaningful connections. And the science really
- 1:10Speaker 2: shows that we want quality over quantity in this area.
- 1:14Speaker 1: And we were talking about that this morning as a
- 1:16Speaker 1: matter of fact, early this morning with men have the
- 1:19Speaker 1: tendency to as they get older, sort of isolate and
- 1:23Speaker 1: not have connections.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly, and it definitely does impact not
- 1:32Speaker 2: just their mental well being, but their overall physical health
- 1:35Speaker 2: as well.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And if you need to borrow five bucks, it's you know,
- 1:38Speaker 1: if there's nobody there you can borrow it from. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:43Speaker 1: What's the next one?
- 1:45Speaker 2: The next one is compassion, and compassion is a willingness
- 1:51Speaker 2: to sit in discomfort, both with ourselves as well as
- 1:56Speaker 2: with others, and to be kind to ourselves and others
- 2:00Speaker 2: during these times of discomfort. Sometimes that might come easily
- 2:05Speaker 2: to you for other people, but not so much for yourself.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I think that's absolutely true. I hadn't thought about thought
- 2:13Speaker 1: about it that way, but that is true. You you
- 2:15Speaker 1: you feel you can feel the pain of other people,
- 2:18Speaker 1: you can, you can take on there, but sometimes you don't.
- 2:22Speaker 1: You don't allow Yeah, you're very hard on yourself that way.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely. I like to ask myself how would I
- 2:30Speaker 2: treat a friend in this situation? And that helps me
- 2:35Speaker 2: not always, but often it helps me be a lot
- 2:37Speaker 2: kinder to myself.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I would ask myself that, But I don't have any friends.
- 2:42Speaker 2: You need connection, one at a.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Time, I know, and I'm going to I'm going to
- 2:47Speaker 1: be working on that. What's the next one.
- 2:51Speaker 2: The next one is coping?
- 2:52Speaker 1: Well, I can't do that.
- 2:57Speaker 2: This is talking about building healthy skills and mechanisms when
- 3:03Speaker 2: we do come across stress in our lives. You know,
- 3:05Speaker 2: it can be so easy to just zone out, stare
- 3:09Speaker 2: at our phone, stare at our TVs, whatever it might be.
- 3:12Speaker 2: But we also need to develop skills that can can
- 3:15Speaker 2: help move us further along in our lives. So things
- 3:18Speaker 2: like journaling, talking with friends, moving our bodies, those can
- 3:23Speaker 2: all help us manage stress and difficulties in a more
- 3:26Speaker 2: healthy way.
- 3:27Speaker 1: It's I mean, it really is hard. I mean if
- 3:29Speaker 1: you're having health issues or you know, like when I
- 3:33Speaker 1: had I got I had RSV last year, and that's
- 3:38Speaker 1: really bad. And I just I said to my wife,
- 3:40Speaker 1: you know, I understand why people just say that's it.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I'm just going to sit in front of the TV
- 3:44Speaker 1: and watch TV and just wait, wait for the wait
- 3:47Speaker 1: for Frank Chris to come along. He's our grim reaper friend.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Oh Jesus.
- 3:53Speaker 1: But you know, it's I mean, it really does. You
- 3:55Speaker 1: just feel such despair Now. I don't feel that way now,
- 3:58Speaker 1: but when I was ill, I did feel so.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely absolutely. It's easier in the moment for sure
- 4:05Speaker 2: to zone out and do all of these things, but
- 4:08Speaker 2: in the long run, we definitely benefit more from doing
- 4:14Speaker 2: these healthier mechanisms.
- 4:15Speaker 1: And what's the community is the next one?
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yes, community and and this is different from connection. Community
- 4:24Speaker 2: is part of being something that is that is bigger
- 4:27Speaker 2: than ourselves, feeling a sense of purpose, a sense of
- 4:31Speaker 2: engagement with people who are approximately close to us, maybe
- 4:37Speaker 2: so like our neighbors, our church group, our exercise class,
- 4:41Speaker 2: whatever that might be. Or it can be more of
- 4:44Speaker 2: like a global community. If you have like a really
- 4:47Speaker 2: thriving online connection with people, that can be a great
- 4:51Speaker 2: way to build community as well.
- 4:53Speaker 1: That's it. I'm joining the Elks. That's what I'm going
- 4:57Speaker 1: to become a Mason. That's what I'm gonna do. That's
- 5:00Speaker 1: community as a community helped. I mean, I mean it's
- 5:05Speaker 1: I say that as a joke, but I mean that's
- 5:07Speaker 1: that's why people did join social clubs a lot. It's
- 5:10Speaker 1: you know, yeah, it was a way to establish, you know,
- 5:13Speaker 1: to have some community. What's the final.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Scene, exactly? The final see is care and this is
- 5:20Speaker 2: about being pro active in our own well being, So
- 5:24Speaker 2: practicing things like self care, reading a book, taking a break,
- 5:28Speaker 2: making sure we're showering or bathing regularly, as well as
- 5:32Speaker 2: seeking professional care such as going to a therapist, seeing
- 5:37Speaker 2: our primary care provider regularly, things like that. So being
- 5:41Speaker 2: just proactive about our own well being.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I'm going to carry Gina. I promised today. I'm going
- 5:49Speaker 1: to start showering, right, don't you. That's caring for us
- 5:53Speaker 1: as well.
- 5:54Speaker 2: In the room. You're gonna help with everybody's mental well being.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I've got I promise, and I promise that I will
- 6:01Speaker 1: not stop using the odor of ink. I'll use theodorank,
- 6:05Speaker 1: I promise. All right, okay, yes, all right? Where can
- 6:08Speaker 1: people find out more about this? Elena?
