- 0:33Hamster with a blunt. Pen knife for doing quicker.
- 0:37Welcome back to the Hamster with a blunt pen knife commentary on
- 0:43the invisible enemy. And I managed to say all the
- 0:46right words in the right order, which I'm very impressed myself
- 0:49about. Though we are on episode 4 of
- 0:53this. Engrossing, intoxicating,
- 0:57bollock filled story. Yeah.
- 1:01How are we feeling guys? Episode 4 What's going to
- 1:04happen? I mean, the only thing we
- 1:06haven't seen is a load of balls on a load of sludge sort of
- 1:09vibrating about. I wonder if that will happen in
- 1:12this episode. Fingers crossed.
- 1:16Notice everyone sort of pause momentarily when they said
- 1:19hamster intro in their episodes. Did everyone have book club in
- 1:24their heads? Yes.
- 1:25Just for a second. Yeah.
- 1:26And wow, Yeah, it's our natural ground.
- 1:29But unfortunately you guys are mutate.
- 1:31You've like a virus. You've mutated across to the
- 1:34other side. Now we've swarmed.
- 1:37Contact has been made. That's right.
- 1:40Turns out Joe, we know the host of Hamster with a blunt pen
- 1:42knife and that. Prick.
- 1:46Talking of balls. Yeah.
- 1:50I'll be ready to get stuck into the balls of Episode 4.
- 1:54Balls, Steve. Right 321.
- 2:04This episode is only 21 minutes long, did you notice?
- 2:07Yeah, well the last one was only 23 and they could have couldn't
- 2:09be longer. You can drag the running.
- 2:12Terrance would never have had this.
- 2:15He would have written a scene of padding just to get it to the
- 2:18right length. You know what I'm saying?
- 2:19It out at the time. How big is the cliffhanger the
- 2:22sex segment going to be? Sometimes they'll have a long
- 2:25recap segment because that's going to fill time.
- 2:28As long as we see that enormous crustacean growing again.
- 2:33Oh yeah, yeah, here we go. Don't you love the way he's
- 2:37pushed around the tight and base on a trolley?
- 2:40He's just sort of waving his arms about.
- 2:42Just join them. Now, oh boy.
- 2:48You're like the nucleus is in the room with us, John, when you
- 2:50do that. Yeah.
- 2:52Or was it John or Luke? I could never tell it's.
- 2:57Me, yeah. Between the two of you, can you
- 2:59just do lots of quotes in this episode please?
- 3:02They have to be from this storm, yeah.
- 3:04Here he comes. He's.
- 3:06Sort of quite a lovely mother of Pearl eye though, hasn't he?
- 3:09Lovely. Yeah, you look nice on the
- 3:12necklace, you know. Imagine Imagine the.
- 3:15Proper porn soundtrack. Come on, imagine the tomb of.
- 3:17The Cyberman music coming out right here.
- 3:19Boom boom, boom boom. Do you guys buy your prawns like
- 3:23this sort of uncooked and cook them or do you buy ready cooked
- 3:28prawns? I've.
- 3:28Got to say they haven't been moving if I've ever had.
- 3:31I like. I think you can buy drink.
- 3:34And put it in the freezer. Oh.
- 3:36Fair and you sort of Mary Rose sauce people.
- 3:40I don't. I don't think it looks that bad
- 3:43until it starts moving like in photographs.
- 3:47It looks all right, I think. Yeah, well, the big cut out
- 3:50they've got behind the sofa looks great.
- 3:53It's it's good on the target where they've just reddened it
- 3:56up as well. Look at it now look at.
- 4:02It. It looks a bit like a dolphin.
- 4:05It looks a bit like a. Dolphin.
- 4:07They've done those hand things where the bottom hands are
- 4:09attached to the. Top It's the Alpha Centauri
- 4:12effect. Saffron holding his holding the
- 4:15prawns arm up for him. So it's.
- 4:16Keeping Oh God, it's. I think we can charitably call
- 4:19that ambitious. Charitably, yes.
- 4:23But you'd think like they'd have they'd have seen this costume
- 4:26and be like, oh, we we can't show this in a wide shot.
- 4:29We've just got we've got to cut around this.
- 4:31It can't really move. But no, they've they've fully
- 4:35gone for it and. You've got, you've got to laugh
- 4:37at the fact as well that you've got actors of the calibre and
- 4:40Michael Sheared, Frederick Yeager and Tom Baker in that
- 4:43room with that prop. Ring Prawn.
- 4:47I. Don't know how long did it take
- 4:49to shoot this because they must be pissing themselves all night
- 4:52surely? Although I've got to say, you
- 4:54know, as John Leeson non canine performances go, the swarm is a
- 4:58better performance than Doug Een from That's right, power of
- 5:03crow. Look at Leela.
- 5:05Oh icon. No sound.
- 5:09Is wearing that makeup Leela's just like, oh, what's this?
- 5:13Don't mind if I do. Suddenly I love green garbage
- 5:17bags. She's going to creak like
- 5:23nothing else, isn't she? In that.
- 5:24Costume. I love her canine.
- 5:26It's like totally her her her friend now.
- 5:29You can literally see the string between the arms and the legs
- 5:32you. Can see why Canine leaves with
- 5:35Leela though, because he befriends her first.
- 5:39This is basically race to get a pregnant woman to actually do a
- 5:43pregnant thing to hospital, isn't it?
- 5:45Yeah, properly and not to do it in the car will not make a mess.
- 5:49So hang on, you know those eggs we say later in that in on the
- 5:54Titan base and they all coming out of that prune.
- 5:57Yeah. Oh, gross.
- 6:00Prawn eggs. Oh no, how miserable.
- 6:04Thank God we don't see them coming out, do we?
- 6:06No, it's across warm caviar I. Can't believe I'm going to say
- 6:11this, but where do prawn eggs come from?
- 6:14Like. Well, fish do have eggs,
- 6:17obviously. As Luke said, caviar exists.
- 6:20Yeah, but what Oracle? That's what I mean.
- 6:23Listen, what do they do? Oh, an old depositor.
- 6:26Is it buck or something? It's an egg.
- 6:29I'm pleased we cut away though. I don't want to see him
- 6:32depositing the eggs. Oh no, wait.
- 6:34Does that mean the nucleus of the swarm is a woman?
- 6:37Look at Marius just itching around the background there.
- 6:39It depends how it reproduces it. Could it could be asexual
- 6:42reproduction? I think we've given this more
- 6:45for than Bob and Dave already. Yeah, they've already moved on
- 6:48to the next idea. OK, Noise and Tardis already.
- 6:53What's Maria's doing? I've got to say, I do love Leila
- 6:58in that costume. The The Thomas doors again.
- 7:02Oh. Yeah, it's in right through
- 7:03them, through any way. It's just.
- 7:05A bit careless, I think. They normally cut around.
- 7:08That so for the so for the Blu-ray, do they have that shot
- 7:11but put the actual hospital on on the screen there or not?
- 7:14Because I haven't watched a special edition of this.
- 7:19I can't remember either. No I don't usually was a special
- 7:21edition because the effects are terrible.
- 7:24SK9. Did he shoot him in the, in the
- 7:27in the? In the man boobs.
- 7:29Chest. Yeah.
- 7:33Here we go. Enough a close up on the
- 7:35hospital asteroid. It's even got a little belt
- 7:38there that the spaceships can land on.
- 7:42That's right, it's a bum bag. Yeah, although just sort of just
- 7:47cut holes out of the rock. Look, that's the windows,
- 7:50that's. It.
- 7:52It's pretty cool. Like you can imagine a future
- 7:55society doing that. And it's got a nice sort of the
- 7:58narrative's got a nice circular movement because then we go back
- 8:00to Titan, right? That's why they want to tighten.
- 8:03The first place I've been to Bolanski, yes.
- 8:06It's something about Kachanski. Yes.
- 8:10The service droids. It's a shame that he's come back
- 8:13into our own costume, isn't it? Yeah.
- 8:18Anyway, that's the character I've just done a figure of yet.
- 8:21Come on, she's cleaned the makeup off as well.
- 8:23John, did you just say it's a shame she's gone back into that
- 8:26costume? Oh wow.
- 8:27It was. Oh.
- 8:27Come on, come on. That that that PVC as well PVC.
- 8:32For a flag for emancipation over there.
- 8:37Come on, let's get to the base. Now for our riveting conclusion.
- 8:41It is very funny, though, isn't it?
- 8:42The way that Leela's like, got to blow it up and Tom Baker's
- 8:45like, no, outrageous. We're not going to do that.
- 8:47And. Then in the end it just blows it
- 8:49up anyway. Don't they worked out that
- 8:52Leela's the cure? Yeah.
- 8:53Is that what happened? Yeah.
- 8:56OK. Is that clever?
- 8:59I quite like it. I mean I.
- 9:00Guess I like. It from the beginning, isn't it?
- 9:03Projecting her, yeah. It'd be nice if it wasn't that,
- 9:06oh, she's so savage and simple that like, it could have been
- 9:13like, oh, she's so sophisticated and you know.
- 9:15In advance I can absolutely absolutely say that, but on the
- 9:18other hand I still get to see her stab people in the action
- 9:22ladies, so they do at least try to give her something cool to
- 9:27do, even though you you are right.
- 9:29You know those sort of hairy? Problems that are.
- 9:32Coming out of the Nucleus's mouth and all of that, do you
- 9:34think they realized the costume was so terrible that they're
- 9:37just stuck whatever they could on it?
- 9:40They try and disguise it a bit. You know how if you go to like
- 9:44an Asian food St. vendor and you've got those rolls and it
- 9:49looks like it has like this, it's see through so you can see
- 9:51everything that's perfectly like tucked away in the in the kind
- 9:54of long roll. I don't know what they call.
- 9:57It's a it's kind of like food paper thing that they people
- 10:00might know what I'm talking about.
- 10:01That's what the prawn looks like.
- 10:03It looks like they've wrapped them up in lots of that stuff.
- 10:05Oh. That's great.
- 10:07I'm like it could be very useful.
- 10:09Scampi, just batter it and I'll beat it.
- 10:11I don't care. I can't see it there.
- 10:13What the nucleus? Yeah.
- 10:16You know what? You'd have a bit of caviar as
- 10:17well because he's. He's bursting, isn't he?
- 10:21I bet that claw. I bet that's delicious.
- 10:26Okay, that's a bit of fun. What do you think would be the
- 10:30best way to cook the nucleus of this form?
- 10:32I think cook it like a lobster. Yeah, Oh, what a live.
- 10:35Yeah, yeah, break your heart boiling water and.
- 10:38Then while it's dancing, you can just play rock lobster over the
- 10:40top of it. Dang Dang Dang Dang.
- 10:43I could have really. I was thinking more like sort of
- 10:45sauteed in a garlic butter or something.
- 10:47Like that, you know, it looks more like a yabby.
- 10:51Oh my God. Don't stop.
- 10:57Showing you. Know people come away from this
- 11:00with many ways to cook prawns. I like the medical gloves,
- 11:04they're just like rando gloves. You'd use that like some fast
- 11:07food, John something, rather than like surgical gloves.
- 11:11Well, you're going to need that in preparing a prune.
- 11:13You know you don't want to get contaminated.
- 11:16No, you don't want salmonella as well as nucleus poisonous.
- 11:20Spent most of this bloody story sitting around cross legged,
- 11:23have you noticed? See, I love splashing.
- 11:28Meditating on this. Love it, it is so.
- 11:31Good. I do love that bit of medical
- 11:33equipment that's been there because they're on this quite a
- 11:37lot of the story and it it, it does look like a like a thing
- 11:41that does something. It's it's Barry Newbury's a
- 11:44designer, isn't he? I think.
- 11:48I think that makes sense of the Titan Basin because he did a lot
- 11:50of that in heart last time, didn't he?
- 11:52Of like effective backdrops and things.
- 11:55I love that, you know, even that one in Babylon 5, you know, the
- 11:59corridor that goes upwards, You know the one I'm talking.
- 12:03About Oh yeah, Oh yes. Even as a kid I knew that Dalek
- 12:08door in the Daleks when Barbara's going through the
- 12:10corridors, I knew that corridor would the other way was just
- 12:13like a painting or whatever. But I liked what they were going
- 12:16for, so I was like. See, this is where I kind of go
- 12:19with the hearts. I don't necessarily want them
- 12:21tarted up. I want, I don't want to, I don't
- 12:23want to be able to see it's a painted backdrop.
- 12:26Yeah. Leave it a bit.
- 12:28Sort of Misty, interestingly in the war games in colour, you
- 12:31know, the scenes in the barn with those colourised backdrops,
- 12:35I could see so badly how fake they were when it was black and.
- 12:38White it. Was almost, you know, you just
- 12:40almost couldn't tell. Yeah, they're going to carry
- 12:42him. The thing with the with the
- 12:44special effects, when they replace like quite good model
- 12:48work with shit cheap CGI, it's like the budget to do this so
- 12:53it's going to look amazing so why bother?
- 12:57I don't think you can have bad model work, but I'll take bad
- 13:01model work over bad CGI. Anything I can get if they're
- 13:05doing like laser beams and stuff?
- 13:07Yeah, but that's really look, I watch Invasion of Time.
- 13:10The Vardan's look way better in the new version.
- 13:12Don't like? Well, I can't.
- 13:13Math shock, like the lasers are much better in that.
- 13:16But yeah, the models I don't, I don't really get whether they do
- 13:19that. So I love.
- 13:21That Tom sells his excitement there like like he's about to
- 13:25leave and he's to go to the Mary's.
- 13:26Hey, can I, can I borrow your awesome freaking dog, please?
- 13:31Why? Because he's an awesome dog.
- 13:33No, I will. Look.
- 13:35He's popping now. The nucleus inside that reactor.
- 13:40Oh dear. Oh, there they are.
- 13:46Bloody yeah. Disgusting how?
- 13:49Many. Has he given birth to?
- 13:51Yeah, have they? All inside that little prawn.
- 13:53Are they? All friends like it's beautiful.
- 13:56The prawn is dimensionally transcendental, or she's.
- 13:58So bizarre. Or they just squeeze up, really.
- 14:02Small. Well, it's a bit like kill the
- 14:04moon. You know when the moon creature
- 14:06was born and then birthed another creature that was bigger
- 14:11than itself to replace the moon. You know, wicked.
- 14:13It's wacky science. Maybe it was.
- 14:15Inflatable. Oh, maybe that exit on the wall
- 14:22was a clue for what was coming later.
- 14:24Oh, shadowing. There was lots of.
- 14:26Exiting going on a minute ago, wouldn't it?
- 14:29That's kind of mess with Leela, who's only just starting to
- 14:32learn how to read, and now she's in the year 5000.
- 14:34It's like exit. What is this?
- 14:37The one that starts about doing her name on the blackboard, and
- 14:40I miss that. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:41Yeah, that's very. Cute.
- 14:44OK, that's it. Shooting in the nuts.
- 14:49Really. They're.
- 14:50I mean. They've kind.
- 14:53Of got to blow up the base, right?
- 14:55Because what are they going to do with all these?
- 14:57Amazing death acting and anyone that.
- 15:00Suggests we have a load of fish omelettes.
- 15:02Dude, I love that. As he falls towards the end, he
- 15:05realizes like, oh, if I keep my legs like this, canine can't get
- 15:08past me, so I'll just tuck them in.
- 15:11Like a. Nice fall acting there.
- 15:12I love it. I think that's.
- 15:14A very thoughtful demise, actually, Yeah.
- 15:16Exactly. Hey, respect the dark.
- 15:20There's a lot of that going on in State of Decay.
- 15:21Everyone that K9 shoots sort of rolls out of his way.
- 15:25Those eggs. It's a.
- 15:28Bit like the Green Death, isn't it?
- 15:29Yeah. I mean, we sell this sort of pea
- 15:32and ham soup at work. It looks a bit like that,
- 15:34actually. You know, put some caviar on the
- 15:37top and it'll. Yeah.
- 15:40Just put Gourmet on the label. People will buy it.
- 15:44Yeah. Damage.
- 15:50Cream Gourmet. Invisible enemy Seriousness.
- 15:53Is this a disappointing episode 4 or is it just because it's
- 15:56it's canal still throwing weird stuff at us I think.
- 15:58It is so batshit like the rest of the story.
- 16:02Like, you can't really get bored with that, no.
- 16:04Look, it's an. Awesome explosion and the dog
- 16:07joins the crew. It's very.
- 16:09Much. Robert Holmes edited Part 4.
- 16:11It's just the end of something blowing up.
- 16:15But. Like at least.
- 16:15It's kind of so frantic. Isn't it?
- 16:18It's so frantic going from bloody scene to scene.
- 16:23Go OK now and take out my. Shooting in.
- 16:27A deck. It's a big enough target.
- 16:32This isn't it, let's face it. That's right.
- 16:34Oh, I do love that set. Look, I can see the lighting
- 16:36grid. Oh.
- 16:39Yeah, they're using it as part of the set, aren't they?
- 16:41Again, that's why they're in Warriors Gate.
- 16:42It's the. Discontinuity guide says that's
- 16:44a mistake, that you can do that, but I like to read into it the
- 16:47same way you guys do. It's like it's just part of the
- 16:51inner workings of this place people work at, yeah.
- 16:53And it's kind of barrier you do was quite crazy, exactly the
- 16:56same. Thing in Warriors gate, don't I?
- 16:57Yeah, and it works just as well there.
- 17:00So it's the nucleus beneath it now, by the eggs or something.
- 17:03Where's the nucleus now? It's.
- 17:05Still in the tub, isn't it I think.
- 17:07Or or it. We should say it's giving birth,
- 17:10so it's got to have is he going to?
- 17:11Throw the doctor in there to be eaten by all the babies that
- 17:14come out the eggs. No.
- 17:17Oh, he was. He's not now.
- 17:18Oh. That's all right then, what a
- 17:21he. Kicked canine in the ass and
- 17:22then canine was just like, now I'm not having that.
- 17:24I mean just. Just imagine that scene for a
- 17:26second, he's thrown in that sludge and then they all start
- 17:29hatching and then eat him alive. Oh God, grim.
- 17:33Oh. Come back, Doctor, we need.
- 17:38You It's fortunate that we've got this enormous cylinder that
- 17:41says oxygen in huge letters. That might come in handy, you
- 17:45know, does this set feel bigger? It feels massive.
- 17:49Now it is handy as a convenient term of hexochromatic gas,
- 17:52right? That's right.
- 17:54Did I set it up in Episode 1? I don't think I did, actually,
- 17:57no. Did Lena?
- 17:58Just stab him in the neck. Yes.
- 17:59Yeah. Jesus Christ.
- 18:04It's a. I'm pretty sure Leila's murdered
- 18:07three people in this story. I'm going to, I'm going to ask
- 18:11Luke and John like, so, you know, like if you fancy trying
- 18:14it with Leila. Yeah.
- 18:16There's two ways it could go. One is you're going to I
- 18:19imagine. It's been going to be like 2 on
- 18:21sex. You're going to be dead.
- 18:22Straight away, well, I'd. Be the perfect gentleman,
- 18:25anyway. Oh yeah.
- 18:27You've got to be. Yourself, don't be with Leila.
- 18:29Leila, you've got the. Treatment.
- 18:33Get your gold rally done. Oh, I saw she was bought in a in
- 18:37a ceiling. Lots of.
- 18:38Companions scream and run away. You've got a companion here
- 18:41that's just going to turn around and get a knife.
- 18:43You just think. Address very pretty, you know.
- 18:48I would have left the. Doctor as well.
- 18:52She's clicking around if you. Go hanging out with.
- 18:56Peter Davison. Yeah, come on in, let's blow it
- 19:00up. We've had our fun.
- 19:03But it's very Doctor Who now. We can't blow it up.
- 19:05We've got to try all the possible ways 1st and then you
- 19:09do Leila's idea the very. Funny thing about it is the
- 19:12explosion initially looks a bit lame and then all of a sudden it
- 19:15goes out of nowhere. Yeah, there was this other
- 19:19thing. The BBC special Best guys were
- 19:21very enthusiastic with the bangs.
- 19:23Oh. He's still in there.
- 19:25Look the problem. Well, canine's on a lead.
- 19:30Let me out do. You feel like dancing.
- 19:36I have disco fever. That's the first time I turned
- 19:42around and actually seen it's Luke doing that.
- 19:43Boy, it's a bit of a mystery to me, Tom's.
- 19:50Literally talking to us now, isn't he?
- 19:54Oh no, he's talking to the swarm.
- 19:56I mean, he's still gyrating a lot.
- 19:58He's given birth to all those eggs.
- 19:59He must be knackered, staying alive.
- 20:06Oh, this is great. He takes off and Lisa's.
- 20:09There he goes. Oh shit.
- 20:11I better go back for her. Bit of a delayed reaction a.
- 20:16Tiny bit of a like a like that scene in Wild Blue Yonder as
- 20:18well. That's.
- 20:20But that's a Williams moment, right?
- 20:21That wouldn't be a hinge clip. I don't think they finished.
- 20:24Me to fit in like a whole spin off season in that little bit
- 20:27where the Titus dematerialized. Don't give them.
- 20:30Ideas. Is that when there is Hughes
- 20:34fits in? Yeah, and we will Swarm
- 20:38adventures Leela and the Swarm on Titan base.
- 20:42Look, what's this? Boom, boom, boom.
- 20:49Now that looks lame, but they wait for the second explosion.
- 20:53That's great. Hang on.
- 20:59Is that bang big enough for you, Brigadier?
- 21:05Now it looks, now it. Looks like it's bang in history.
- 21:11That's. Not going I would have thought
- 21:13those eggs were that flammable. Yeah, so forgive.
- 21:17Me, Has the doctor just committed genes?
- 21:22The swarm was asking for it. Then you should be feeling very
- 21:26happy, yes. No, he hasn't, because we've had
- 21:29the return of the swarm. Yes, I.
- 21:32Mean. Well, that's a nice.
- 21:32Tardis shot this little pan out I.
- 21:36Do love the fact they're quite conscious of the that explosion
- 21:40thing now because they, you know, it's legal, suggested
- 21:43blowing it up. Yes.
- 21:45It's it's normally happening with Doctor Who.
- 21:49Couldn't they have gone back though and just picked up all
- 21:51the calamari that's all over tight and based.
- 21:53Now they can be like, oh, I love it, Fortune.
- 21:56Have they brought? All the plants with.
- 21:58Them. Oh, there's more.
- 21:59Yeah, they have Lila. 'S showing how progressive she
- 22:02is by going sorry, she he it, I'm sorry.
- 22:06And Ken was like, it's OK. See, I love Leela's.
- 22:09Like, come on, let's get the dog in.
- 22:11Let's have the dog. I think you're right, Andrew.
- 22:15I think they looked around and went, you know what, We decided
- 22:17it was a bit dull here. We bought all the plants from
- 22:19the Titan base. Look, I.
- 22:22Know we're on a strict schedule, everybody, but now you're all
- 22:24going to rewrite your scripts because this dog's coming with
- 22:27us I mean. That last joke is something else
- 22:30in there. I hope he's dreamed.
- 22:34Nothing. Shit.
- 22:38You do have that joke in Rebus. I don't.
- 22:39You don't stop at all corners, K9.
- 22:44And that's Bob Holmes as well, yeah.
- 22:47Jager is one of the coolest names there is, isn't it?
- 22:50Well. That sounds like a.
- 22:51Friggin jet fighter pilot. That was a glorious 4 episodes
- 22:56there where we talked balls, prawns, eggs, every rude thing
- 23:03you can think of. Unfortunately, now you've got
- 23:05the unenviable task of thinking up three things each to
- 23:09recommend The Invisible Enemy to the hamster audience.
- 23:13I'll tell you what, let's start with Luke, and then John, and
- 23:19then Andrew and then me, and we'll go round in a circle three
- 23:22times. Luke.
- 23:24Oh sweet. What I it's, it's super
- 23:27fast-paced. Like I know a lot of criticisms
- 23:30people can aim at Doctor Who is like, oh, it's a bit slow.
- 23:33It's it's all that kind of stuff.
- 23:34This is a fast-paced story. I can easily see a version of
- 23:39this like those elements of this in a new series show, you know,
- 23:43there's some logic leaping and all that kind of stuff.
- 23:46Stuff doesn't get time to breathe sometimes.
- 23:48Just like a new serious story. I just, but it's so much fun
- 23:51that yeah, I just love the pace of this.
- 23:53You'd never get, never get bored.
- 23:55There's always something going on and it doesn't forget the
- 23:59companion. Yeah, I like it.
- 24:01The speed of it, it's good. John, I'm going to.
- 24:04Be totally intellectual and I'm going to delight Miss Simon
- 24:08Hart. And just to say it's canine.
- 24:10You have to say it for this story.
- 24:12Come on, it's canine. Absolutely.
- 24:14It's a great idea. And leader at the end being that
- 24:17kind of childlike presence going, can we have a dog?
- 24:19Can we have a dog? You know, kids go take the dog,
- 24:22take the dog. It's just that one little thing.
- 24:26It is Doctor Who's for I think more of a family audience rather
- 24:30than that kind of mid teed audience again.
- 24:34So it's yeah, it's just like the kind of wonderful canine.
- 24:39And because, you know, I have my canine toy, a talking canine
- 24:42with a little disc in the bottom.
- 24:44Loved it. So yeah.
- 24:46Don't want that. No one's going to argue with
- 24:48that one. I don't think that.
- 24:50Only people would chose. Because you've chosen that one,
- 24:53Andrew. Well, I had canine in general,
- 24:57but I also have specifically canine shooting a guy in the
- 25:01deck, an iconic an iconic Doctor Who moment and you know, should
- 25:10be on every compilation, every clip reel let's you know, let's
- 25:15make it go viral and. Unfortunately, you was looking
- 25:18up Calle Lee at the time, weren't you?
- 25:21I know, I know, but I can go back and relive it again.
- 25:25And can I make a pump for the scenes in episode 3, but
- 25:32specifically the visuals in episode 3, which sort of veer
- 25:36from the ridiculous to the sublime, but more to the what's
- 25:40the sublime? I think it's an ambitious idea.
- 25:45And they don't decide to play it safe.
- 25:47They go, what can we do that's weird?
- 25:49And they do the claws of axos thing and they throw in a load
- 25:52of sets, a load of CSO and weird claw things coming out of the
- 25:57floor. I mean, it's it's mad, but God
- 26:01bless them for having a go. And I think it's rather
- 26:03wonderful, Luke. Well, you got to go, Michael
- 26:08Sheared. Most specifically, my favorite
- 26:09part is always this awesome action pose he does every time
- 26:14he sits up in the optometrist OPS office to flip his goggles
- 26:17up. And he's it's like, it's like
- 26:19one of those old cigarette commercials or something like
- 26:23that. You'd say magazines or something
- 26:25like that. Like that kind of pose that you
- 26:27know, all it needs is like the hairy chest expose or something.
- 26:30And then he's got the idea. It's fucking, it's awesome.
- 26:33He's great. I like how he's like this sweet
- 26:36dude at the start of the episode.
- 26:38Then contact has been made and he is the most ruthless infected
- 26:42person there is. It's a nice contrast.
- 26:44I think Michael Sheed is awesome so I I can understand why he
- 26:48says this is his favorite because it looks like he's
- 26:50having an absolute blast making it.
- 26:54John I. Will say, I'm going to say Barry
- 26:57Newberry because I think this is a store which could easily have
- 27:01been quite bland with a bad designer with with those just
- 27:04kind of no baby get the hexagonal, you know, side by
- 27:08sets a standard thing and he works there.
- 27:10Who's said the kind of the way the he's blended the rock into
- 27:14into the the actual mechanics on type of base, the way he makes
- 27:18it look like a working base, the way the hospital looks as if
- 27:22it's actually, you know, a working hospital.
- 27:25It's all a lot of and you've already said part three.
- 27:28That kind of inside of the doctor's brain isn't, you know,
- 27:31there's backer or budget to do all this on, but he gets you
- 27:34some real wonders on it. Andrew.
- 27:40Well, you don't get much queer representation in classic Doctor
- 27:45Who, but here you have a smorgasbord, the gay astronauts
- 27:51with their theory design. Come and join the party.
- 27:58You've got an entirely male set of antagonists who are obsessed
- 28:06with breeding each other. And.
- 28:10They don't like women. Exactly, and you've got canine.
- 28:15Oh yes, and of course, you know total camp representation in
- 28:21those fabulous green costumes. Exactly.
- 28:24Which looks. Like they've stepped out of
- 28:25Rocky Horror or something like that.
- 28:28Jesus. Where do I go from there?
- 28:31I mean, OK, you don't get much breeding representation in.
- 28:38So I like. The fact that, you know, the
- 28:40poor prawn just wants to pop out all of his eggs in his green
- 28:45sludge, you know, and populate the universe like it's a
- 28:48biological imperative. Really, he's not much of A
- 28:50villain. You know, he's just following
- 28:52his instincts. And then evil Doctor Who and
- 28:55Leela come along and blow up all of his kids.
- 28:57It's really it's a it's a morality tower in in reverse.
- 29:04No, I just love the Pearl. I love the Pearl.
- 29:07I'm allergic, but God bless them.
- 29:10Forgiven that one ago. And poor John Scott Martin, we
- 29:14salute you to your duties to Doctor Who, Luke.
- 29:19I, I can see Louise Joneson being maybe annoyed with with
- 29:24Andrew's point before, like, oh, I'm being treated like a fool in
- 29:27this episode. But you know, then she gets to
- 29:29do lots of action stuff and stabbing people and hanging out
- 29:31with the dog. So Louise Jameson is awesome in
- 29:34this. She sells everything she needs
- 29:37to. She's the first of the TARDIS
- 29:39regulars to become besties with canine and she's involved in
- 29:44some really great cliffhangers too.
- 29:45She, you know, that first one with the gun to the back is so
- 29:51it's really cool and the doctor's just like I need you to
- 29:55come in to my head with me because it's like of your
- 29:57natural instincts and stuff like that.
- 29:59So if anyone's yeah, people treat her like she's an idiot,
- 30:02but you know, people need her and stuff like that.
- 30:06So yeah, I like, I love Louise Jameson and then Leo, like the
- 30:09character that's. Those two, little Doctor and
- 30:12Leela, so they just sort of vanish.
- 30:15Well, yeah, yeah, Apart from the hair and the knife, yeah.
- 30:20OK, John, I'm going. To go with that as, as we'd say,
- 30:25it's a proper working future. The astronauts, as we can
- 30:28clearly see they have champagne that they are getting wankered
- 30:32all the way through that episode.
- 30:33No wonder the nucleus is so easy to take them over.
- 30:36They just get ready to fall over.
- 30:38They've not. You know why, though?
- 30:39Andrew's right, They know there's male fresh meat just
- 30:43docking, you know, in the next shuttle, come in and join the
- 30:46party. Put your can you rub the table?
- 30:48What's happening? Ready for their?
- 30:53Order. Andrew.
- 30:59Well, having lowered the tone with my other two favorite
- 31:03moments of this, I'm just going to go with the models.
- 31:06I dislike the models. Oh fuck.
- 31:07That was my. I'm surprised nobody got nobody
- 31:12else took it, but yeah, just just lots of pretty spaceships
- 31:16and spinning Tardises brains. It's good.
- 31:22It's a really good showcase for those special effects.
- 31:25Then I'll tell you what, I wasn't going to go for the
- 31:27models because they are great. Can I just say a quick word for
- 31:31Bob and Dave then as the last one, because I think they come
- 31:34in for a lot of slack and they come in for a lot of slack on
- 31:36this story. But boy, they keep it moving,
- 31:39don't they? And, you know, Jesus, if you do
- 31:41have ADHD, you'd be fine with this because it's doing
- 31:44something else every two minutes.
- 31:45And as a commentary experience, this was just a delight because
- 31:49every 3 minutes, something absurd was happening on the
- 31:52screen that we could laugh at. Yeah.
- 31:55So I think people should just stop getting their knickers in A
- 31:58twist about the invisible enemy, which is, you know, perhaps not
- 32:02something when you're 12 years old that you want to be watching
- 32:06when your mother comes in the room with your baked beans on
- 32:08toast and go, oh, good God, you'll grow out of it soon.
- 32:13But aged, you know, whatever we are now, Yeah.
- 32:17I think it's a rather wonderful way to spend a Friday night with
- 32:22your mates watching this bit. Can't be of old tats I.
- 32:27Think we're staying out of trouble?
- 32:29That's. Right.
- 32:31Well, fellas, I mean the big question to ask really is, and
- 32:34we determined this off Mike, where are we going next?
- 32:39I shall ask Luke. Well, Joe brought it to my
- 32:44attention that for some reason, none of you foolish ephemerals
- 32:47have suggested enlightenment before.
- 32:50And so we, we, we're going to do that.
- 32:53It's a, it's a favorite of mine, so I'm very excited.
- 32:55I, I think I chose this because I thought it'd be a good
- 32:58icebreaker, something really silly fun, you know, but I
- 33:02thought it was kind of good as well.
- 33:04And yeah, I legit like enlightenment.
- 33:07So if there's any dissenters in, in, in, in, in this quartet, but
- 33:11that's. I can happily say I'm not a
- 33:14dissenter. I I think enlightenment's one of
- 33:17the best. Andrew's.
- 33:17Keeping his powder dry right there, no.
- 33:19I I just really love enlightenment.
- 33:21I'm excited. You're already a winner here,
- 33:24Luke, because enlightenment was the choice.
- 33:27Any other any other Davidson story?
- 33:29There may have been some dissension, but we got lucky.
- 33:31This time. I'll just say until what we're
- 33:35we're discussing a book before then, I'm sure.
- 33:38But thank you for. It'll be a great and.
- 33:40Thanks for the giggles tonight and until next time.
- 33:45Contact. Has been made.
- 33:47Contact has been lost. Contact.
- 33:52Oh, what? OK, I'll cut it there.
