- 0:21Speaker 2: This is Reughfresh Radio. I'm your host k C. Smith.
- 0:23Speaker 2: And the rut is over? Or is it?
- 0:27Speaker 3: Did you know that there are still a lot of
- 0:28Speaker 3: running action. The bucks are still in the mood if
- 0:31Speaker 3: they can find the right dough. Let's see if they're
- 0:33Speaker 3: in your state. This is Retfresh.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Welcome to Retfresh Radio. Y'all, I am your host k C.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Smith. We are brought to you first Light gear.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Tyler Jones is here and in attendance via telecommunication not telekinesis.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Maybe I don't know, he might be capable of that.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Mark Kenyon, what's up? Man?
- 1:02Speaker 4: It's good to be here. Good to be here. And
- 1:04Speaker 4: when you say telekinesis the first thing that comes on
- 1:06Speaker 4: mind's tenacious d Now retrospect you probably do you guys?
- 1:10Speaker 4: Do you have you ever listened to Nation?
- 1:12Speaker 2: I hate to admit it, but I have.
- 1:15Speaker 4: There's a good song and about telekinesis. So I don't know.
- 1:19Speaker 4: That's that's a fun off topic.
- 1:20Speaker 3: The one that for me was a Pokemon. There was
- 1:23Speaker 3: a Pokemon that was like a telekinetic.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Do you remember that, Mark, I was not a Pokemon player.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I can't believe it.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, you're you're the nerd today.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I mean, here's the deal.
- 1:36Speaker 4: I love this, this is great. Let's go down this
- 1:39Speaker 4: path further.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Pokemon, star Wars. What else?
- 1:44Speaker 4: Man, Lord of the Rings?
- 1:45Speaker 3: I can we can go on Man.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Star Trek. I got some Star Trek game. He's a
- 1:48Speaker 2: lot like Sheldon. Yeah, random that, Like.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Are we talking about deer today?
- 1:55Speaker 2: Though?
- 1:56Speaker 4: We're talking about deer right, Well that's in.
- 1:58Speaker 3: The interviews just start. It's just just just for the
- 2:05Speaker 3: last But no, this is Reference radio where we talk
- 2:07Speaker 3: about the rut and all things fresh, and it's on
- 2:09Speaker 3: the radio.
- 2:10Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:10Speaker 3: So we've been doing a lot of deer hunting, Mark,
- 2:14Speaker 3: You've been doing some deer hunting in the coldest place
- 2:17Speaker 3: known to man. It seems it feels like that today
- 2:21Speaker 3: it is snowy and like wind chill sub ten degrees
- 2:25Speaker 3: at least.
- 2:27Speaker 4: So yeah, I was actually just out there this morning,
- 2:30Speaker 4: and my fingers are splitting. I don't know if you
- 2:33Speaker 4: guys had that, but when you're outside hunting for so
- 2:35Speaker 4: long in that cold, dry weather, my fingers start to
- 2:38Speaker 4: actually split. So I got I just put band aids
- 2:40Speaker 4: and like neo sporn on my fingertips because they're bleeding.
- 2:43Speaker 4: And yeah, it is chilly.
- 2:46Speaker 2: So were you hunting this morning?
- 2:48Speaker 4: I was not hunting this morning.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I've been hunting a bunch YEP.
- 2:54Speaker 4: I was hunting last night. I was out the day before,
- 2:57Speaker 4: the day before that, and I showed a couple days
- 3:00Speaker 4: for Thanksgiving. I was hunting most of the week before that.
- 3:03Speaker 4: So the last you know, seven to nine days, I've
- 3:05Speaker 4: been out there for almost all of it. So it's
- 3:08Speaker 4: all been in Michigan. So yeah, I feel like I
- 3:11Speaker 4: got a good sense of what has been going on
- 3:14Speaker 4: out here.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Tell us about what's been going on.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Well, I think what I have seen is the beginning
- 3:22Speaker 4: of that big shift as we shift out of November
- 3:25Speaker 4: and out of the rut for much of the country
- 3:28Speaker 4: and into that next phase of the year, which for
- 3:31Speaker 4: you know, those of us up here in Michigan and elsewhere,
- 3:33Speaker 4: we're shifting into that late season type of behavior.
- 3:36Speaker 5: Pattern.
- 3:37Speaker 4: So, I mean, like I said, I've been out in
- 3:39Speaker 4: the woods.
- 3:41Speaker 6: Ten out of the last twelve days something like that,
- 3:43Speaker 6: and you know, I was still seeing some of that
- 3:46Speaker 6: you know, cruising, some of that bumping around stuff, you know,
- 3:49Speaker 6: in that last that third week of November in the
- 3:53Speaker 6: beginning of the twenties.
- 3:55Speaker 4: But the last few days, maybe since the twenty fifth
- 3:59Speaker 4: or so, I've not seen anything the last three or
- 4:01Speaker 4: four hunts like ruddy type behavior. Now that can change, right,
- 4:05Speaker 4: You can still see that kind of thing happen this
- 4:07Speaker 4: time of the year, especially if you get a little
- 4:09Speaker 4: dough fon that pops into heat here. But almost everything
- 4:13Speaker 4: has been on a feeding pattern. It's been you know,
- 4:16Speaker 4: every dear coming out at the end of daylight heading
- 4:20Speaker 4: out to go feed in the highest carbohydrate type food
- 4:23Speaker 4: source around, and Bucks just mining their own business. Bucks
- 4:27Speaker 4: just feeding does just feeding. It looks like October, right,
- 4:32Speaker 4: I mean they're back on the same things they were
- 4:34Speaker 4: doing October first, but now it's a different food source
- 4:37Speaker 4: and it's much colder and deer are more pressured now.
- 4:42Speaker 4: So that's I think. Another thing, right is we're going
- 4:44Speaker 4: back to that bed defeed pattern. But these are deer
- 4:46Speaker 4: that have been hunted for two plus months now, so
- 4:48Speaker 4: they're a lot more weary, not moving as early unless
- 4:53Speaker 4: you can find those spots where they've been able to
- 4:55Speaker 4: evade hunting pressure. Because we were in our second week
- 4:58Speaker 4: of gun season here in Michigan, so there's been a
- 5:00Speaker 4: ton of hunting pressure. So deer are jumpy. That is
- 5:03Speaker 4: definitely another thing I've seen, like definitely on edge, constantly
- 5:07Speaker 4: looking around, constantly thinking they're going to get bothered. So
- 5:11Speaker 4: so yeah, that's what I'm seeing. We had a big
- 5:13Speaker 4: cold front come through. It's been very cool, like I mentioned,
- 5:17Speaker 4: and we had snow the last two days. So the
- 5:19Speaker 4: last two days deer ever really been on their feet,
- 5:23Speaker 4: hitting the food source and in my case cut corn,
- 5:27Speaker 4: and the day before the snow arrived that evening before
- 5:30Speaker 4: they really got after it. So how they don't know
- 5:33Speaker 4: if I'm rambling too much, but that's that's been exciting stuff.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Your listeners are used to that. How did the deer know?
- 5:40Speaker 2: I'm just how did the deer know this?
- 5:45Speaker 3: Scott kind of said that as a joke, rap, but like, seriously,
- 5:48Speaker 3: is what do you think it is?
- 5:50Speaker 2: Why did deer? Howhy are you able to predict fronts?
- 5:52Speaker 2: Like that.
- 5:54Speaker 4: My best guess, I think it has to be related
- 5:57Speaker 4: to barmentric pressure, right, Like, I'm guessing that's the only
- 6:02Speaker 4: condition change.
- 6:03Speaker 2: What organ are they using to detect the barometric pressure?
- 6:06Speaker 3: Mmmm?
- 6:07Speaker 4: That I do not know?
- 6:08Speaker 3: See this is where and then maybe this is not
- 6:10Speaker 3: really arough fresh type thing. But we're going to dive
- 6:12Speaker 3: into a little bit. I like to think that barimetric
- 6:15Speaker 3: pressure matters. But scientifically we should be able to, like
- 6:19Speaker 3: you like the science mark, like, scientifically we should science
- 6:22Speaker 3: we should be able to point to an organ that
- 6:26Speaker 3: says the barometric pressure is affected, right, And maybe it
- 6:29Speaker 3: is like the inner ear or something, and we don't
- 6:31Speaker 3: quite understand how it works.
- 6:32Speaker 4: But I don't know, Well, dyll isn't I'm no, I
- 6:36Speaker 4: don't have this issue. But isn't it a pretty well
- 6:39Speaker 4: documented phenomenon that people can feel the change in bear
- 6:42Speaker 4: rut pressure Arthroic people will feel it in the joints,
- 6:45Speaker 4: so when certain pressure systems come in.
- 6:48Speaker 2: My wife had surgery on she basically has a fake
- 6:51Speaker 2: heal bone, and she can feel she can feel the
- 6:53Speaker 2: weather for sure.
- 6:55Speaker 4: So I wonder if it's something like that.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't know.
- 6:58Speaker 3: We might need to talk to some some body else
- 7:00Speaker 3: who actually study this stuff or something instead of us
- 7:03Speaker 3: just making up some assumptions.
- 7:04Speaker 2: But I like it too. I like it. I like
- 7:06Speaker 2: the thought of the bone thing.
- 7:07Speaker 4: It would it would make sense like from a you know,
- 7:11Speaker 4: evolutionary perspective, like for this deer to survive, they have
- 7:15Speaker 4: to be well prepared for changes and conditions, right, Like
- 7:19Speaker 4: for if a deer wants to make it through a
- 7:21Speaker 4: tough snowstorm, years and years worth of tough snowstorms, it
- 7:24Speaker 4: would behoove these critters to you know, get on and
- 7:28Speaker 4: pack on the food ahead of those things. So you
- 7:30Speaker 4: would think that, you know, natural selection would eventually select
- 7:34Speaker 4: for deer or wildlife of a kind that that knows
- 7:37Speaker 4: to feed at the right times or to feed a
- 7:39Speaker 4: little extra at the right times. And so I got
- 7:42Speaker 4: to believe something like that has led to deer being
- 7:45Speaker 4: able to not necessarily predict but they just get hungry
- 7:49Speaker 4: sooner or something when that change comes on them. I
- 7:53Speaker 4: don't know. We can kind of smell like the rainstorm
- 7:55Speaker 4: coming in it, right, we can kind of feel certain
- 7:58Speaker 4: things changing, and they are much more tuned than we are.
- 8:01Speaker 4: So for sure, I gotta believe there's something there.
- 8:03Speaker 3: They don't have as many microplastics in their system. I
- 8:05Speaker 3: don't think it helps you out, that's true, Yeah, Mark,
- 8:10Speaker 3: it would seem as if you did some good predicting
- 8:14Speaker 3: of your own potentially and have been out doing some hunting.
- 8:17Speaker 3: But the listeners need to tune in to the actual
- 8:21Speaker 3: Wired to Hunt show that launches on Thursday of this
- 8:24Speaker 3: week to get the full story.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I've got an exciting story to share tomorrow on
- 8:32Speaker 4: the main show. All right, man, So yeah, I'm very
- 8:35Speaker 4: excited to share that story. I'm actually going to record
- 8:38Speaker 4: it right after we get off the phone here, and
- 8:42Speaker 4: it's good. It'll be good.
- 8:43Speaker 2: It'll be good, sweet awesome. Tyler.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Speaking of recording, who have we got interviews with this
- 8:49Speaker 3: week for reports from around the country.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Well, we've got Hunter Lindsay out in Kentucky. You know,
- 8:54Speaker 2: we actually have two hunters. There's lots of hunters on
- 8:57Speaker 2: this podcast. But Hunter Dickens one of our our acquaintances,
- 9:01Speaker 2: a good friend of ours that does a lot of
- 9:02Speaker 2: stuff with us at the Element. He's out in Texas
- 9:06Speaker 2: doing the thing. The dude has had a streak of
- 9:09Speaker 2: a year in Texas. Pretty impressive, you know, resume. There
- 9:15Speaker 2: are good buddy Barrett Nigas, who is an Instagram friend
- 9:18Speaker 2: and now a real friend after we get to talk
- 9:21Speaker 2: on the phone. He's in Alabama, which they have weird
- 9:24Speaker 2: ruts down there, so it's gonna be like a report,
- 9:27Speaker 2: you know, that's different than what most of the country's
- 9:29Speaker 2: given right now. And then our good friend Scott from Arkansas,
- 9:33Speaker 2: he's gonna be on here too.
- 9:34Speaker 3: Sweet man, let's get this thing going. I'm on the
- 9:38Speaker 3: phone with Hunter Lindsay. He's been doing some hunting in Kentucky.
- 9:41Speaker 3: And if you ever watched a viral clip of an
- 9:43Speaker 3: owl landing on a dude's camera, that's this guy.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Hunter.
- 9:45Speaker 2: What's going on, man.
- 9:47Speaker 7: Not much, not much, just doing some chores after I've
- 9:50Speaker 7: tagged out in Kentucky.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Oh man, you let the cat out of the bag?
- 9:53Speaker 2: You killed a big buck?
- 9:54Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 9:54Speaker 5: I did.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah, Way to go, man. What was that deer doing.
- 9:59Speaker 7: He was actually coming to a field to check for
- 10:01Speaker 7: some dose had been consistent on that side of the
- 10:04Speaker 7: farm for a while. We had him on camera and
- 10:06Speaker 7: I finally decided to go in after him and it
- 10:08Speaker 7: worked out. At what I think it was three thirty
- 10:11Speaker 7: eight in the afternoon, so I got it done pretty quick.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Gole Lee.
- 10:13Speaker 3: How so how early is that compared to your sunset
- 10:16Speaker 3: where you're at.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Uh, sunset's probably around five five.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Twenty Okay, so he's a good two hours before sunset.
- 10:24Speaker 3: This deer is out checking for dose.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Yep.
- 10:26Speaker 3: And that's still that's pretty much late November and that's
- 10:29Speaker 3: still going on there in Kentucky.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:31Speaker 7: Yeah, it seems like the doe uh in that in
- 10:35Speaker 7: this past week, uh, you know, they were starting the
- 10:39Speaker 7: bucks were starting to look for those dough that were
- 10:41Speaker 7: starting to come into that second heat, and and.
- 10:45Speaker 4: It seemed like that was what he was doing.
- 10:46Speaker 7: He had finally gotten off that first dough and heat
- 10:49Speaker 7: that he had found, and he was coming to find
- 10:51Speaker 7: another one out here in this big cornfield with some
- 10:53Speaker 7: with a long hardwood draw through it.
- 10:56Speaker 3: That's cool, man. Do you think that as you look
- 10:59Speaker 3: to like what's coming up? Is that still on the
- 11:02Speaker 3: rise As far as bucks in that seeking moat.
- 11:07Speaker 7: I think that they're still gonna be looking for some
- 11:09Speaker 7: hot dose, but not near as hard as they were,
- 11:11Speaker 7: you know, a week or so ago. I think, you know,
- 11:15Speaker 7: in the next week or two they're probably gonna start
- 11:18Speaker 7: moving towards a feeding pattern, but they're probably you know,
- 11:23Speaker 7: they're not going to turn down a hot dough if
- 11:24Speaker 7: they find one.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Got you, So, what kind of food would you be
- 11:28Speaker 2: would you be looking to hunt if you were gonna
- 11:31Speaker 2: be out there the next week.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Probably some high nutritious greens.
- 11:35Speaker 7: If there's still some acorns around, then you know, if
- 11:39Speaker 7: you're in a big wood setting, then try and find,
- 11:42Speaker 7: you know, some acorns that are left. But those ag
- 11:45Speaker 7: fields are uh, you know where they're playing winter wheat
- 11:49Speaker 7: and stuff like that. I think that's a that's a
- 11:51Speaker 7: big thing to key on in December.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Is y'all's winter wheat in pretty good shape right now.
- 11:56Speaker 7: It's probably about you know, two or three inch, which
- 12:00Speaker 7: is maybe four at the highest.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Get some of that cold weather that's coming in across
- 12:05Speaker 2: the country.
- 12:06Speaker 7: Oh yeah, No, it's been in the thirties just about
- 12:08Speaker 7: every morning here so far for the past you know,
- 12:11Speaker 7: handful of days. It's it's been great weather. You know,
- 12:15Speaker 7: highs in the in the mid to upper forties. It's
- 12:18Speaker 7: just been perfect.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Yeah, has that? Do you think the daylight movement is
- 12:23Speaker 2: gonna still sustain even though bucks are kind of cooling
- 12:27Speaker 2: on the rut a little bit.
- 12:30Speaker 4: That's hard to say.
- 12:31Speaker 7: I think that's gonna be situational, but I think that
- 12:35Speaker 7: this colder weather will definitely help with that more than
- 12:38Speaker 7: than note. You know, we've kind of had some hotter
- 12:40Speaker 7: weather towards the beginning of November.
- 12:42Speaker 4: I think, uh, this colder weather at the end.
- 12:44Speaker 7: Of November will definitely start, you know, and the rut
- 12:48Speaker 7: starting subside a little bit. I think that that's definitely gonna.
- 12:52Speaker 4: Help with some daylight movement on some food sourses. That's cool.
- 12:55Speaker 2: What do you think about that moon? It's just real
- 12:57Speaker 2: big and bright all night long up there.
- 13:01Speaker 5: You know.
- 13:03Speaker 7: I've seen that moon phase, you know, helps movement some,
- 13:07Speaker 7: but I don't pay to it and pay as much
- 13:09Speaker 7: attention to it as I do, you know, just better
- 13:12Speaker 7: temperature and pressure conditions and all that stuff. Some people
- 13:16Speaker 7: really focus in on that moon phase, you know, unless
- 13:20Speaker 7: it's just like glaringly bright outside at just all night long.
- 13:24Speaker 4: I don't really pay attention to it too much.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Sweet Well, in the next week, if you had to
- 13:30Speaker 2: put a number one to ten on buck movement, what
- 13:33Speaker 2: you're predicted Buck movement is, what would you what would
- 13:35Speaker 2: you put it?
- 13:39Speaker 4: I'd probably say four or five.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Okay, all right, so you think that's a downgrade from
- 13:48Speaker 2: this week.
- 13:49Speaker 7: Yes, I think that they're going to start uh yeah,
- 13:52Speaker 7: I think that they're going to be not searching for
- 13:55Speaker 7: the dose as much as they were this past week.
- 13:59Speaker 7: But you know, it's all situational, and you could be
- 14:02Speaker 7: in an area where.
- 14:04Speaker 5: You know, there's a.
- 14:05Speaker 7: Couple more hot doughs than than not and they could
- 14:09Speaker 7: just be going crazy. But at this point, I think
- 14:11Speaker 7: that the rut is on definitely on the downhill side.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Cool man.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Well, thanks for all the great information, dude, and congrats
- 14:18Speaker 3: on all the big bucks have been hitting the ground.
- 14:20Speaker 4: I appreciate it. It's been a good year.
- 14:22Speaker 7: It was some ups and downs, but it definitely turned
- 14:25Speaker 7: out to be a better season.
- 14:26Speaker 4: I thought it was going to be.
- 14:28Speaker 2: All right. I've got a guy that people are familiar
- 14:30Speaker 2: with here on the phone. His name is Hunter Dickens,
- 14:32Speaker 2: and he is a big contributor on our YouTube channel,
- 14:36Speaker 2: the Elements YouTube channel shooting Bucks. I mean, at least
- 14:41Speaker 2: a couple of year, but this year it's it's been
- 14:43Speaker 2: good for you man. Actually, they're in Texas where you've
- 14:46Speaker 2: been hunting. You had some success the other night, correct, I.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Did I did.
- 14:51Speaker 8: Texas seems would be the only place I can find
- 14:53Speaker 8: success at the moment.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know about that. But you you are
- 14:57Speaker 2: doing well there. Man. You've have you shot? How many
- 15:00Speaker 2: bucks have you shot in Texas this year?
- 15:02Speaker 4: The three Texas bucks?
- 15:04Speaker 2: Man? You got it? Dialed?
- 15:05Speaker 8: Man, I've been blessed, Yes, I have. It's it's been
- 15:11Speaker 8: a lot of fun.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Now. The Bucky shot through the night was just a
- 15:14Speaker 2: big frame looked like an eight point with maybe a
- 15:17Speaker 2: couple of extras, but like a mainframe eight What was
- 15:20Speaker 2: he doing?
- 15:22Speaker 8: That deer was fresh out of the bed really, so, yes, yes,
- 15:28Speaker 8: fresh out of the bed at last light. So I
- 15:31Speaker 8: didn't have I didn't have time to get in there
- 15:34Speaker 8: on midday movement.
- 15:35Speaker 4: So I just I got as close to his bed
- 15:37Speaker 4: as I could. I'm pretty sure I heard him stand
- 15:39Speaker 4: up out of his bed.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Really, what was this? What was what was the weather
- 15:44Speaker 2: like that day?
- 15:45Speaker 8: It was gosh that day it would have been we
- 15:49Speaker 8: was just wearing a hoodie, I know that. So it
- 15:51Speaker 8: was in the fifties to sixties.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Just that's probably what it was that evening. Gotcha? Did
- 15:57Speaker 2: it feel hot for the time of year or normal?
- 15:59Speaker 8: Yesky, Yeah, it was a lot warmer than I would
- 16:01Speaker 8: have liked.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Okay, So you think that has to do with the
- 16:07Speaker 2: small amount of daylight movement that that buck was, you know, portraying?
- 16:13Speaker 4: Ye partially.
- 16:14Speaker 8: I think the moon has some contributions to that as well,
- 16:19Speaker 8: because I've been seeing a lot of midday movement kind
- 16:21Speaker 8: of that twelve to one o'clock hour has been really
- 16:25Speaker 8: peeking for me on cameras, which I know you can't
- 16:30Speaker 8: go off everything the camera shows you, but I.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Can get a general idea of what movement is.
- 16:34Speaker 8: So I've been seeing a lot that twelve to one,
- 16:38Speaker 8: and then I didn't have time to get in, so
- 16:41Speaker 8: I went and.
- 16:42Speaker 4: Got as close to his bed as I thought.
- 16:45Speaker 8: I knew the general area of where that buck was,
- 16:49Speaker 8: and I suspect i'd set up within about sixty yards
- 16:52Speaker 8: of his bed.
- 16:53Speaker 2: So talk about the moon, what stage it was in
- 16:58Speaker 2: when you shot that deer, and how that affects to
- 17:01Speaker 2: your movement in your opinion.
- 17:03Speaker 4: That was I believe.
- 17:06Speaker 8: Three three days ago, so we would have been right
- 17:10Speaker 8: at full moon and now we're at the backside of
- 17:13Speaker 8: the moon. But that was three days ago, so I
- 17:16Speaker 8: believe that you get a lot of midday movement, and
- 17:21Speaker 8: then you get a lot of those bucks who are
- 17:23Speaker 8: coming off the rut. This is kind of their final
- 17:25Speaker 8: push for the end of November, and so they're going
- 17:30Speaker 8: to be doing a lot of zombie walking during the day,
- 17:33Speaker 8: especially you know, midday and in the evening, they're just
- 17:36Speaker 8: gonna be traveling looking for that last little bit of
- 17:39Speaker 8: doze that they can find until the next cycle world's around.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Gotcha. So you think when he got out of his bed,
- 17:46Speaker 2: that was his intention, was to go bind those for
- 17:49Speaker 2: the evening.
- 17:50Speaker 8: Yes, that was it. And I had set up on
- 17:52Speaker 8: a known travel route for a lot of doze and
- 17:56Speaker 8: so he could almost just lay there in his bed
- 18:00Speaker 8: and smell doze as they came by.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Gotcha.
- 18:02Speaker 8: And so he was just taking more of the lackadaisical
- 18:05Speaker 8: approach to it with it being such warm weather.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Right, So in the next week or so, would you
- 18:12Speaker 2: change what you're doing based off the thing weather moon?
- 18:15Speaker 2: What are you going to do different in tactic? Tactically, see,
- 18:20Speaker 2: I would go sit.
- 18:21Speaker 3: I would go sit.
- 18:23Speaker 4: Probably forty yards off the edge of food.
- 18:26Speaker 2: I would be really.
- 18:27Speaker 8: Focusing back on food sources for the next couple of
- 18:30Speaker 8: weeks and be sitting back on some soft edges to them,
- 18:35Speaker 8: or just inside the timber line. Gotcha, if you've got
- 18:38Speaker 8: if you've got food plots, or if you're hunting standing
- 18:40Speaker 8: corn beans, whatever it is, I would be back off
- 18:44Speaker 8: that edge, but relatively close to a food source.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Okay, So in the next week or so, if you
- 18:50Speaker 2: had to make a prediction on buck movement, and you
- 18:55Speaker 2: had to rate it on a scale of one to ten,
- 18:57Speaker 2: what would you what number would you give it?
- 18:59Speaker 4: Probably seven?
- 19:00Speaker 8: All right, dude, I like it because the bucks almost
- 19:04Speaker 8: become a little bit patternable around these food sources. So
- 19:08Speaker 8: they're gonna be for you know, a week or two.
- 19:11Speaker 8: They're gonna be there, and it's it's if you've got
- 19:14Speaker 8: a really good food source, it's gonna hold them because
- 19:16Speaker 8: I mean, their bodies are deprived of nutrients right now
- 19:20Speaker 8: and they're gonna be wanting.
- 19:21Speaker 4: To build that back up.
- 19:22Speaker 8: And especially if you've got good food source, you're also
- 19:25Speaker 8: going to have doze in year lands that are going
- 19:28Speaker 8: to be coming in later, you know, in a.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Couple of weeks.
- 19:30Speaker 8: I've I've got some properties that don't heat up till December.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, Well that's good news, man. I appreciate the report,
- 19:39Speaker 2: and uh, good job there in Texas, dude. If you know,
- 19:42Speaker 2: people are looking forward to seeing those videos on the Element.
- 19:46Speaker 2: They will be on as soon as we can get
- 19:47Speaker 2: them edited. We're all out hunting like crazy right now,
- 19:49Speaker 2: but they're we're working on them. So one hundred thanks
- 19:51Speaker 2: for the report, man, I'll be talking to you soon.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Yes, sir, it's a blast.
- 20:12Speaker 2: I've got Barrett Nigas here, he's with long time bow
- 20:15Speaker 2: hunting out in Alabama doing some deer hunting. Nextually, you're
- 20:18Speaker 2: heading to deer hunt right now, right.
- 20:21Speaker 4: That is correct?
- 20:22Speaker 5: Awesome, I got a cold front coming.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Oh man, that's what I'm talking about. That's a there's
- 20:26Speaker 2: a you know, usually only a few types of people
- 20:30Speaker 2: that like cold fronts on the way in winter in
- 20:31Speaker 2: the wintertime, and that's uh, you know people sometimes in
- 20:35Speaker 2: the South we're like, oh yeah, we get a snow
- 20:37Speaker 2: this year, and then there's deer hunters, you know, and
- 20:39Speaker 2: that's that's us. So, uh, your your was it your
- 20:42Speaker 2: brother that recently had success there in Alabama?
- 20:45Speaker 4: Yeah, it was my brother.
- 20:47Speaker 5: Yeah, he shot one over the Thanksgiving break here a
- 20:50Speaker 5: few days ago actually, uh Sunday morning.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that's all right, man as a good buck to
- 20:55Speaker 2: what h what was he keen inn on right there?
- 20:59Speaker 5: Well, he was really hunting, hunting in between I guess
- 21:02Speaker 5: you call I think this deer's two bedding areas. Uh,
- 21:07Speaker 5: he'd showed up a few days earlier, and it was
- 21:10Speaker 5: really just like some five foot tall you know, i'd
- 21:14Speaker 5: call it just some you know, it's like a clear cut,
- 21:18Speaker 5: but really just five foot tall planted pines and newly
- 21:22Speaker 5: planted pine slash clear cut where that there could kind
- 21:26Speaker 5: of move pretty safely between two bedding areas and we
- 21:30Speaker 5: get there's like a hardwood hardwood flat there that we've
- 21:34Speaker 5: hunted for years, and he was moving in between those
- 21:39Speaker 5: two areas. I think you guys would call it a
- 21:41Speaker 5: d M A a deer movement area that we've hunted
- 21:44Speaker 5: for years there and kind of some historical movement. And H.
- 21:49Speaker 5: He had shown up two days before. And so this
- 21:54Speaker 5: time of the year in Alabama, they're on a pretty
- 21:56Speaker 5: good pattern. We're in that pre rut stage. We're still
- 21:59Speaker 5: a month and a half from our rut. So he
- 22:00Speaker 5: had showed up two days prior, and you know, he
- 22:05Speaker 5: was kind of on that pattern moving in between two
- 22:08Speaker 5: we think two bedding areas.
- 22:09Speaker 2: So when you say betting areas, is this like would
- 22:13Speaker 2: you make these more like a doe betting area or
- 22:15Speaker 2: a betting area that he's inhabiting.
- 22:18Speaker 5: Yeah, so I would say it'd be buck betting. I
- 22:21Speaker 5: mean it's like five foot tall weedy, you know.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Three.
- 22:25Speaker 5: I think they planted the pines there three years ago, two,
- 22:28Speaker 5: three years ago, So those pines are getting up. I
- 22:31Speaker 5: mean you can't hunt in them, you know. And those
- 22:34Speaker 5: deer as soon as they walk into it, they disappear,
- 22:36Speaker 5: you know. So you'd say a four year old buck
- 22:39Speaker 5: like that, I mean he loves it, you know, as
- 22:41Speaker 5: soon as he walks into it, he disappears, you know,
- 22:46Speaker 5: kind of like those mature East Texas bucks. Same thing
- 22:49Speaker 5: with those mature Alabama bucks. Man, as soon as they
- 22:51Speaker 5: can walk into some tall grass RP type stuff like that,
- 22:56Speaker 5: I mean, that's like heaven for them. They walk into it,
- 22:59Speaker 5: they disappear. They can lay in it all day, you know,
- 23:03Speaker 5: get up at night, feed on acorns or whatever that
- 23:06Speaker 5: that nearest food. Of course, you can you can bait
- 23:08Speaker 5: in Alabama too, now, so the nearest corn pile on
- 23:12Speaker 5: the neighbors or whatever it might be.
- 23:15Speaker 2: So what you what would you uh, would you call
- 23:19Speaker 2: it pre rut.
- 23:19Speaker 5: Where you're at, I would say it's not quite pre rut,
- 23:24Speaker 5: uh the deer shed velvet beginning of October here. But
- 23:28Speaker 5: I see that like just that testosterone is picking up,
- 23:32Speaker 5: and so I feel like they get on this feeding
- 23:35Speaker 5: pattern in like October November, but come December, it's like
- 23:40Speaker 5: they know like it's coming, and it's like this pre
- 23:44Speaker 5: rut phase is like they're on a They're certainly on
- 23:48Speaker 5: a bed to feed pattern right now. I've seen it
- 23:50Speaker 5: with a couple other Bucks, and that's that's why I'm
- 23:52Speaker 5: going hunting now. It's because I think there's a few
- 23:55Speaker 5: other Bucks that might be on that bed to feed
- 23:56Speaker 5: pattern right now also. But there's certainly like we're starting
- 24:03Speaker 5: to see some rub lines pop up. You know. I
- 24:06Speaker 5: saw a group of bachelor Bucks, like some young bucks,
- 24:09Speaker 5: they were just two year old, but they were locked up,
- 24:12Speaker 5: you know, getting excited, especially with these cold fronts, are
- 24:15Speaker 5: like locked up and they were pushing around for like
- 24:17Speaker 5: five minutes.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Yeah. So so in the next week, do you think
- 24:22Speaker 2: that that's gonna continue to ramp up with this cold
- 24:24Speaker 2: front coming in? Is it gonna Is that gonna that
- 24:27Speaker 2: kind of rutty type movement gonna continue to increase or
- 24:30Speaker 2: is it gonna be about the same next week in
- 24:32Speaker 2: your opinion, Yeah.
- 24:34Speaker 5: I think it continues to increase all the way through
- 24:36Speaker 5: the month of December.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Like yeah, so then December.
- 24:40Speaker 5: Will start popping up. Yeah, those scraps will start popping
- 24:43Speaker 5: up and stuff like that.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Yeah. And the and the rut for you is win.
- 24:48Speaker 5: Uh, the rut will be like the peak of the
- 24:50Speaker 5: rut in Central Alabama will be mid January.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Okay, okay, cool man. Well there's still some time left
- 24:57Speaker 2: to get on some of that pre rut movement. You know.
- 25:00Speaker 2: The best thing about that is deer still pretty patternable
- 25:02Speaker 2: typically during that and but they can be a little more.
- 25:06Speaker 2: They can show up in daylight more so. It's a
- 25:08Speaker 2: it's probably a pretty good time of year. Tell your
- 25:10Speaker 2: brother congrats. I got one more question for you. On
- 25:13Speaker 2: a scale of one to ten, what do you think
- 25:16Speaker 2: buck movement is going to be like in Central Alabama
- 25:19Speaker 2: in the next week.
- 25:22Speaker 4: I would say like an eight.
- 25:23Speaker 5: We just came off the full moon and we have this, Man,
- 25:27Speaker 5: this is like one of the best cold fronts I
- 25:28Speaker 5: think we've had all year. We've had some warm weather,
- 25:32Speaker 5: so we have this cold front coming, and I think
- 25:35Speaker 5: we have a decent moon and a cold front coming,
- 25:37Speaker 5: so I think maybe you can get on a good
- 25:40Speaker 5: buck this next the next few days here.
- 25:44Speaker 2: So it's awesome though, awesome, I'm hoping. Yeah, well, I
- 25:49Speaker 2: hope that it goes well for you too, man, And
- 25:51Speaker 2: appreciate the time we'll be talking to you. I'm sure
- 25:54Speaker 2: at some point soon, Man, maybe next year or maybe
- 25:56Speaker 2: later this year when the rut's kicking. But appreciate the report. Bett. Yeah,
- 26:00Speaker 2: thank you, Toll on the phone. Now, I've got my
- 26:03Speaker 2: friend Scott from Arkansas, and Scott has hunted. What your
- 26:08Speaker 2: whole life in Arkansas? Pretty much? Right? Yeah? I have.
- 26:11Speaker 4: That's about the only place I've hunted.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Yeah, so you know quite a bit. You're as qualified
- 26:15Speaker 2: as anybody. Probably talk about it. I know you're gonna
- 26:17Speaker 2: be humble and say no, no, you know, y'all do
- 26:19Speaker 2: this and y'all do that. Whatever. But Scott, what have
- 26:23Speaker 2: you been seeing in the deer woods lately? Uh?
- 26:27Speaker 9: We're you know, if you're in it, you're in it,
- 26:29Speaker 9: I think. But I think right now, I think Bucks
- 26:31Speaker 9: are definitely on the dose. I think we're past the
- 26:34Speaker 9: pre rut and we're into the rut. You know, Arkansas
- 26:37Speaker 9: is a funny state just because of water levels and
- 26:40Speaker 9: the different terrain that we have. So I think really
- 26:43Speaker 9: on X has done a great job at connecting the
- 26:47Speaker 9: dots as far as giving you a good rut calendar,
- 26:50Speaker 9: and I think they're pretty accurate.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I really do. So far.
- 26:52Speaker 9: I've just been really impressed with how that connects with
- 26:56Speaker 9: what's really going on the ground.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Sure, so you think, do you think the bucks are
- 26:59Speaker 2: in what a lot of people consider the lockdown stage
- 27:01Speaker 2: right now? They are.
- 27:03Speaker 9: I believe they are, And I think that's one of
- 27:04Speaker 9: the reasons why that if if you're not in it,
- 27:07Speaker 9: you need to move because they're not going far and
- 27:12Speaker 9: they're not roaming around like they were, you know, earlier
- 27:14Speaker 9: in the month. So yeah, I think they're definitely in
- 27:18Speaker 9: the lockdown.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:19Speaker 3: So a lot of times for these southern states, you know,
- 27:22Speaker 3: acorn crop is a big deal.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Is that is there a lot of acorns right now?
- 27:27Speaker 2: Or what does that look like?
- 27:29Speaker 9: Man, we've seen in our area and the place that
- 27:31Speaker 9: I hunt. Now it's going to be different, you know,
- 27:33Speaker 9: because Arkansas is just so varied in terrain and topography.
- 27:38Speaker 9: But in the area that I hunt in particular, there
- 27:40Speaker 9: is far fewer acorns than I've seen in the last
- 27:44Speaker 9: several years, and I think that has to do with water.
- 27:46Speaker 9: I just think that there's been a little bit of
- 27:48Speaker 9: water shock among some of the hardwood trees around here,
- 27:51Speaker 9: which for us is actually better. It's just better it
- 27:55Speaker 9: keeps that it gives us an at least the opportunity
- 27:57Speaker 9: to look for feed trees and look for a little
- 28:00Speaker 9: bit more condensed movement and patterns.
- 28:03Speaker 4: That that helps us that way.
- 28:04Speaker 9: The deer that they can they've got some places they've
- 28:06Speaker 9: got to go if they're going to get into those acorns.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Is there an acorn that they prefer in your.
- 28:14Speaker 9: Opinion, yeah, I think you know, obviously white oaks are
- 28:17Speaker 9: are you know, I preferred acorn, but but water oaks
- 28:21Speaker 9: I have found in my area. They love water oaks,
- 28:25Speaker 9: and I kind of key in on those. But you know,
- 28:28Speaker 9: as the season goes on, red oaks produce here a
- 28:30Speaker 9: lot later in the year, and and a red oak
- 28:33Speaker 9: tree is usually your friend, especially as the rut advances,
- 28:36Speaker 9: because you got to think about it, the buck is
- 28:39Speaker 9: pursuing the dough, the dose still doing dough things. And
- 28:41Speaker 9: so if you find the dose and you you find
- 28:44Speaker 9: the food source, because the dose are still going to
- 28:46Speaker 9: the food source, you're gonna find the bucks, and you're.
- 28:48Speaker 4: Going to be in the in the mix for the rut.
- 28:50Speaker 9: So especially late rut, you know those red oak trees
- 28:53Speaker 9: that are kind of in the open, that that that
- 28:54Speaker 9: big old buck wouldn't go near any other time of
- 28:57Speaker 9: year chasing, you know, a younger that's coming to estras late,
- 29:03Speaker 9: you got a good chance of killing a big deer
- 29:04Speaker 9: that way.
- 29:06Speaker 2: That's kind of you know that that's a good point.
- 29:07Speaker 2: I think about this a lot, and I have in
- 29:10Speaker 2: the past, but especially on like private land, man, if
- 29:14Speaker 2: you can hunt, if you can hunt food sources like
- 29:17Speaker 2: agricultural food sources, a lot of times, man, where the
- 29:21Speaker 2: deer aren't necessarily pressured off like they might be on
- 29:24Speaker 2: something that's closer to public or more accessible to a
- 29:27Speaker 2: public that it's almost like you can get away with
- 29:30Speaker 2: hunting deer on ag and close to egg from like
- 29:35Speaker 2: September to January. In a lot of cases. You know,
- 29:38Speaker 2: it's like you really almost if you had good access,
- 29:41Speaker 2: you wouldn't even need to move your set, you know.
- 29:44Speaker 9: No, I completely agree, And I think that's one of
- 29:46Speaker 9: the things about the big Woods when when you hunt
- 29:49Speaker 9: the big woods, and I define big woods as tracks
- 29:52Speaker 9: of land that are not influenced by agriculture necessarily, So
- 29:57Speaker 9: when you hunt those big woods, I mean, the deer
- 29:59Speaker 9: are much more dispersed. It's a much more complex thing.
- 30:03Speaker 9: I think predictability as far as like where they're coming
- 30:05Speaker 9: from their travel routes. You know, you don't have that
- 30:09Speaker 9: in the big Woods, So the deer could show up
- 30:11Speaker 9: in a place that you didn't expect it, which affects,
- 30:14Speaker 9: you know, shot placement, It effects you know, everything about
- 30:17Speaker 9: you because it's kind of a surprise. Whereas when you
- 30:19Speaker 9: have agriculture and you've got you know ingress negress routes
- 30:22Speaker 9: and you've got a good way in, you know, you're
- 30:24Speaker 9: not having to you know, bump around.
- 30:26Speaker 4: And try to figure out where you ought to set up.
- 30:29Speaker 9: I think agriculture gives you a distinct advantage in that.
- 30:32Speaker 9: But I think when you kill a deer in the
- 30:33Speaker 9: big Woods and you pursued it and you found it
- 30:36Speaker 9: in that environment that it was in, I just feel
- 30:39Speaker 9: like there's just like a piece of accomplishment in that
- 30:41Speaker 9: you know, I think there's a piece that just says,
- 30:42Speaker 9: you know, I didn't have the advantage of those other things.
- 30:46Speaker 9: I'm not saying I disagree with emer it's unethical or
- 30:48Speaker 9: nothing like that. I'm just saying, challenge wise, it's kind
- 30:51Speaker 9: of like the person that says, you know, I want
- 30:52Speaker 9: to shoot, you know, a traditional bow as opposed to
- 30:55Speaker 9: a compound bow. I think there's definitely there's a learning curve,
- 30:59Speaker 9: and it's more difficult I think in the big woods.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Yep.
- 31:02Speaker 3: So since it's already difficult in big woods, we got
- 31:06Speaker 3: a full moon right now. For the next week, it's
- 31:09Speaker 3: going to be you know, kind of waning, but it's
- 31:11Speaker 3: still going to be pretty big.
- 31:13Speaker 2: And you know, you said it's kind of the lockdown thing.
- 31:15Speaker 3: So if you had to kind of predict what you
- 31:18Speaker 3: thought the buck movement would be like over the next
- 31:20Speaker 3: week on a scale of one to ten, what would
- 31:21Speaker 3: you think it would be.
- 31:23Speaker 9: I don't think the moon when they're in the lockdown
- 31:25Speaker 9: affects them as much as it does maybe other times
- 31:27Speaker 9: of the year, because they're going to be doing what
- 31:30Speaker 9: they're going to be doing at that particular time. And again,
- 31:32Speaker 9: I just look at the rut this way at this
- 31:34Speaker 9: phase of it, and the beauty of Arkansas that I've
- 31:37Speaker 9: always loved about this state and why I loved up
- 31:40Speaker 9: to hunt here, which obviously I live here, is that
- 31:44Speaker 9: when one particular area begins to cool off, you can move.
- 31:48Speaker 9: Sometimes it's twenty miles, You go twenty miles and you've
- 31:51Speaker 9: got a completely different time frame for the rut. And
- 31:55Speaker 9: so it's kind of like chasing the migration of ducks.
- 31:59Speaker 9: You know, you're you're you're following that that rut down,
- 32:02Speaker 9: and I think the obviously they're going to move a
- 32:06Speaker 9: lot at not but they're nocturnal anyway. I mean, it's
- 32:08Speaker 9: I always laugh when people say, you know that they're
- 32:10Speaker 9: just going to go nocturnal. They are nocturnal, their entire
- 32:13Speaker 9: eye structure, everything about them is nocturnal. But them showing
- 32:16Speaker 9: up during the day should be the abnormality. But I
- 32:20Speaker 9: would continue, you know, I mean, obviously monitor, you could
- 32:22Speaker 9: monitor some of your game cameras and stuff. But I
- 32:24Speaker 9: feel like, personally, from my experience, I feel like weather patterns.
- 32:30Speaker 4: Affect their movement. I feel like they're up on their
- 32:32Speaker 4: feet more.
- 32:32Speaker 9: I also think food sources is a really really important
- 32:36Speaker 9: part of this aspect, because again, the dough the does
- 32:39Speaker 9: are going to be doing what dose do. If you're
- 32:40Speaker 9: in the dose, you're gonna be in the bucks, you
- 32:42Speaker 9: know for sure.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Hey, give me that one to ten number.

- 33:00Speaker 4: I'll say this, I think I think moving.
- 33:05Speaker 9: I think the area that I'm hunting in right now
- 33:08Speaker 9: is at the tail end of what's really good, and there's.
- 33:13Speaker 4: Probably a day or two of that left.
- 33:15Speaker 9: I think I'm gonna probably make a move, and I
- 33:18Speaker 9: think you could be in the I'm gonna say you
- 33:20Speaker 9: could be in the eight nine.
