- 1:25Speaker 1: was actually one of the very best character actresses in
- 1:30Speaker 1: old time radio. She had regular roles on this show
- 1:34Speaker 1: as well as on The Great Yilders and My Friend Irma,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and she starred in a series of anthology plays with
- 1:44Speaker 1: her then husband Elliott Lewis, and on stage a total
- 1:48Speaker 1: of three thousand appearances for Kathy Lewis in radio, and
- 1:54Speaker 1: she certainly really has shined so far in this series.
- 1:57Speaker 1: And with that said, we're going to get into today's
- 2:00Speaker 1: episode of Michael Shane. The original air date on this
- 2:03Speaker 1: one is April sixteenth of nineteen forty five, and the
- 2:07Speaker 1: title is The Left Handed Clue.
- 2:11Speaker 2: The Adventures of Michael Shane's Private Detectives. The people who
- 2:21Speaker 2: make seventy six Gasoline and Triton Motor Oil, Union Oil
- 2:26Speaker 2: Company Present The Adventures of Michael Shane Private Detectives, starring
- 2:34Speaker 2: Wallie Mayer and Kathy Lewis. Most private detectives, when they're
- 2:51Speaker 2: called into a case by a wealthy patron, are rushered
- 2:54Speaker 2: into the library, or the gun room, or the master's
- 2:57Speaker 2: private den. Not so private Detective Michael Shame and his
- 3:00Speaker 2: attractive assistant Phyllis Knight, Oh no, They find themselves at
- 3:04Speaker 2: San Francisco's Cliff House to keep a date with Well,
- 3:08Speaker 2: let Phyllis tell it what she is doing without any
- 3:10Speaker 2: of the poetry. She knows so well.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Now, there's no use arguing Mike Shane. If she weren't
- 3:15Speaker 3: a blonde and good looking, you'd have turned the case
- 3:17Speaker 3: down for.
- 3:18Speaker 4: The thousand time. Honey, I tell you I haven't seen
- 3:21Speaker 4: the do Oh. She isn't blonde, and I don't know
- 3:24Speaker 4: whether or not she's good looking.
- 3:25Speaker 3: I'll bet I'll bet only no, honey.
- 3:27Speaker 4: That she's frightened. She said she was a brunette, five
- 3:30Speaker 4: foot two and wearing a kelly green raincoat.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Well, then there she is staring out the window.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Right Angel, Well leave us ankle ord.
- 3:37Speaker 3: You know she does look scared. She saw us? Hey?
- 3:41Speaker 5: Does she know you?
- 3:42Speaker 3: No?
- 3:42Speaker 4: But I told her I was bringing you along and
- 3:43Speaker 4: there aren't any other couples.
- 3:44Speaker 6: Around mister Shane and miss Knight, correct you, Miss Jones, Well, no,
- 3:48Speaker 6: that is I used that name over the phone.
- 3:50Speaker 3: But my real name is right, not Patricia Wright. Yes, oh,
- 3:54Speaker 3: then it was your brother. I mean I read the
- 3:57Speaker 3: article on the papers.
- 3:58Speaker 6: What is My brother was killed Monday? The police said
- 4:01Speaker 6: it was an accident.
- 4:02Speaker 4: He fell over the cliff. They said, but do you
- 4:05Speaker 4: think he was killed deliberately? Yes, murdered in fact? Yes?
- 4:08Speaker 7: Why?
- 4:10Speaker 6: I just know he was pushed over that cliff.
- 4:12Speaker 4: And now whom do you suspect?
- 4:14Speaker 6: I don't know my father's manager, mister Haberman, for one
- 4:17Speaker 6: and mister Armstrong a businessman dealing with.
- 4:20Speaker 4: My father and your father.
- 4:24Speaker 6: Yes, well, not that I think my father killed my brother, No,
- 4:27Speaker 6: but well I am suspicious of some of my father's
- 4:30Speaker 6: business dealings, and very suspicious of some of his associates.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Miss right. Your brother was in the business with your father.
- 4:36Speaker 6: Yes, and well he didn't approve of some of their deals.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Did he complain to you or to your father or
- 4:41Speaker 4: both both?
- 4:42Speaker 6: They've had bitter quarrels over some of their transactions.
- 4:45Speaker 3: How about you, miss right, Are you afraid for your
- 4:48Speaker 3: own life?
- 4:49Speaker 6: Yes, terribly afraid.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Okay, Okay, that settles it so far as I'm concerned.
- 4:53Speaker 4: We will take the case. Now. How about going out
- 4:57Speaker 4: to your place and looking over the ground.
- 4:58Speaker 3: But we can't.
- 4:59Speaker 6: That's why I used you assume name, and that's why
- 5:01Speaker 6: I met you here instead of it the house.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Listen, Patricia, your best safeguard is to let them murderer
- 5:05Speaker 4: know that you have a detective on the job. The
- 5:07Speaker 4: very fact that you've engaged me will make them wonder
- 5:10Speaker 4: how much you know.
- 5:11Speaker 3: We'll watch out for you, Miss right. Nothing's going to
- 5:13Speaker 3: happen to you while Mike's on the job. Well, all right,
- 5:16Speaker 3: I'll do it fine, get in your car.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Then then we'll follow you out, and even if he
- 5:20Speaker 4: turns out to be your father, we'll get the killer.
- 5:42Speaker 6: It's over here, just by that white post. That's where
- 5:45Speaker 6: he fell.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Oh boy, did they take your brother's body away from
- 5:52Speaker 4: the bottom of the cliff or bring it up here
- 5:54Speaker 4: on ropes?
- 5:55Speaker 6: They took it away from the bottom in a boat.
- 5:57Speaker 2: I see.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Was there much of a crime here at the top? No? Why, well,
- 6:02Speaker 4: there are a lot of footprints here. The ground is
- 6:04Speaker 4: pretty well tramped down, but.
- 6:06Speaker 6: There weren't any people here at all. This is private property.
- 6:09Speaker 4: The murderer tramped the ground or confused? Hey, wait a minute,
- 6:12Speaker 4: what what is it, Mike, honey? I see those marks here?
- 6:16Speaker 4: Those marks were made by a dead man's heels as
- 6:20Speaker 4: his body was dragged to the edge of the cliff
- 6:22Speaker 4: and thrown over.
- 6:23Speaker 3: The killer hid behind the tree.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Yes, and probably hit his victim with a rock. Yeah, Patricia,
- 6:28Speaker 4: did your brother have a date with anyone the night
- 6:30Speaker 4: he was killed?
- 6:31Speaker 6: Yes, with mister Haberman. Daddy's partner. Mister Haberman came out
- 6:35Speaker 6: to the house at eight o'clock. He said that he'd
- 6:37Speaker 6: made an appointment to meet my brother. At about ten o'clock,
- 6:40Speaker 6: he decided to go home. Just as he was leaving,
- 6:43Speaker 6: the chauffeur came to the door and said that they'd
- 6:45Speaker 6: found the body down on the rocks below the cliff.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Was the chauffeur looking for your brother?
- 6:49Speaker 6: No, we didn't know anything was wrong.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Then.
- 6:51Speaker 6: The chauffeur was out fishing and it was just coming
- 6:53Speaker 6: into the little cove when he saw a hat on
- 6:55Speaker 6: the water.
- 6:56Speaker 3: He turned the.
- 6:56Speaker 6: Boat along the rocks and found my brother's body.
- 6:59Speaker 3: The chauffeur is up at the house now.
- 7:01Speaker 4: No, he left, he left.
- 7:03Speaker 6: What do you mean, Well, he's been doing a lot
- 7:05Speaker 6: of drinking and my brother fired him about a week ago.
- 7:07Speaker 6: Oh fine, We seem to be turning up suspects wherever we.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Move, right angel, Well, miss Patricia, will you get your
- 7:14Speaker 4: father's manager and mister Armstrong up to the house right away,
- 7:17Speaker 4: use any excuse at all, I'll get inspected parody to
- 7:20Speaker 4: find the chauffeur and we'll have a little quiz contest
- 7:24Speaker 4: with Mike Shane as quiz master.
- 7:38Speaker 7: I don't know what on earth you could be thinking of,
- 7:40Speaker 7: Bertitia to do such a thing, Daddy, another word, tell
- 7:43Speaker 7: this Shane fellow to get about his business, and any
- 7:45Speaker 7: private detectives are hired to come to this house, I'll do.
- 7:48Speaker 4: The hiring, Daddy.
- 7:48Speaker 6: I'm more convinced than ever that my brother was murdered.
- 7:51Speaker 7: Murdered, stuff and nonsense. My dear, you're upset. I don't
- 7:56Speaker 7: blame you for that. You were very fond of your brother.
- 7:58Speaker 7: But thinking for one moment that any of my business
- 8:00Speaker 7: associates could be guilty of such a thing. The idea
- 8:03Speaker 7: of dragging mister Haberman and mister Armstrong out here to
- 8:05Speaker 7: be cross questioned by a private detective. Why it isn't
- 8:09Speaker 7: as if there was any suspicion about your brother's death.
- 8:11Speaker 7: The police were satisfied it was.
- 8:13Speaker 4: An excellent I'm not satisfied, however, mister Wright.
- 8:15Speaker 7: Who are you?
- 8:16Speaker 4: Sir Michael Shane, private detective, And this is my assistant,
- 8:18Speaker 4: Miss Knight.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Hello, I'm very happy to meet you, mister Wright.
- 8:21Speaker 7: I'm sorry I can't say the same. I hate to
- 8:24Speaker 7: appear in polite, but I must ask you to leave
- 8:25Speaker 7: my house immediately.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Well, let's go, Mike. We don't have to take this
- 8:28Speaker 3: sort of thing from anybody.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Just a minute of angel, mister Wright, I suppose you
- 8:33Speaker 4: realize that by your attitude, you're casting a lot of
- 8:35Speaker 4: unnecessary suspicion on you.
- 8:36Speaker 7: Why you imputed, young welth If I were a younger man,
- 8:39Speaker 7: I'd thrash you within an inch of your life. You
- 8:43Speaker 7: will you leave quietly? Or will I have to have
- 8:45Speaker 7: you thrown out? Evidently there's company at the door, and
- 8:48Speaker 7: I'd much prefer not to have to introduce you only.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Parody detective inspect with the showcas Hello inspect there, mister
- 9:00Speaker 4: Wright here would just about order us thrown out. He
- 9:03Speaker 4: won't have a private detective around the place.
- 9:05Speaker 8: I see, well, maybe he let you stay as my assistant.
- 9:08Speaker 7: What on earth are you talking about.
- 9:09Speaker 8: I'm talking about the fact that we're here to investigate
- 9:11Speaker 8: the death of your son. I just as soon get
- 9:14Speaker 8: on with the questioning. If you haven't any objections, you
- 9:16Speaker 8: have everybody come in here, I inspected.
- 9:18Speaker 3: They're all out in the front hall.
- 9:19Speaker 4: I don't know what this is all about. I'm only
- 9:21Speaker 4: the show for I haven't done anything. I'll sue you
- 9:24Speaker 4: for arresting.
- 9:24Speaker 8: Me, that's right for sure, and do that all right
- 9:26Speaker 8: into the front hallular well, which one of you is Haberman?
- 9:33Speaker 7: I'm mister Haman why, And.
- 9:35Speaker 8: I'm strong that's you, I suppose.
- 9:36Speaker 9: Mmm.
- 9:37Speaker 8: Correct. I don't know much about this except what might
- 9:40Speaker 8: tell me over the phone. But I understand that you,
- 9:42Speaker 8: mister Haberman, had an appointment with mister Wright junior, the
- 9:45Speaker 8: deceased the evening he was killed. Yes, that is true.
- 9:47Speaker 4: What was that meeting about?
- 9:48Speaker 7: Well, I don't see that any of your business.
- 9:50Speaker 8: You can answer that question here and now are at headquarters.
- 9:53Speaker 8: Later take your choice.
- 9:54Speaker 7: Well, here's a business man. Don't answer him. But right
- 9:57Speaker 7: if I don't, he'll take me in and.
- 9:59Speaker 4: He'll for answering the long one. It was business, and
- 10:03Speaker 4: young mister Wright was going to tell you that he
- 10:05Speaker 4: wouldn't play along with the kind of deal you and
- 10:07Speaker 4: his father were cooking up.
- 10:08Speaker 7: Correct, Well, that's putting it rather strongly.
- 10:11Speaker 4: He was a young fellow too many idealistic ideas for
- 10:14Speaker 4: the business world.
- 10:15Speaker 7: I was quite certain I could straighten him out when
- 10:17Speaker 7: we sat down and talked it over.
- 10:19Speaker 8: And when he wouldn't listen, you threatened his.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Life, of course not. You didn't see him that night
- 10:23Speaker 4: at all.
- 10:23Speaker 3: No, I didn't, and you weren't anywhere near the top
- 10:26Speaker 3: of the cliff. Between eight and ten thirty.
- 10:28Speaker 7: I most certainly was not. Can you prove that I can.
- 10:31Speaker 7: I just hadn't talked with mister Haberman all evening.
- 10:33Speaker 8: And mister Armstrong, I suppose you have an alibi too.
- 10:37Speaker 9: Well, I don't know. I think I was at a
- 10:38Speaker 9: picture show that night, but I wasn't keeping track of
- 10:41Speaker 9: my movements. I wasn't anywhere near this house though.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Mm hm oh, Inspector, Yes, Mike, come here. I think
- 10:48Speaker 4: we gotta do some checking on the murdered man's papers.
- 10:51Speaker 4: We might find something that would give us a lead.
- 10:53Speaker 8: You're probably right, Mike. Okay, you can all go now.
- 10:57Speaker 8: We don't leave the place where we may want to
- 10:58Speaker 8: a few more answers before Miss Patricia, Yes, will you
- 11:03Speaker 8: take us to your brother's room. We'll see what that
- 11:05Speaker 8: leads us to.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Did you find anything, Honey.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Huh, nothing important?
- 11:16Speaker 8: Man, I bought you, Inspector nothing. I hope we're not
- 11:18Speaker 8: in a world goose Chase.
- 11:19Speaker 3: I know we're not.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Wait a minute, Wait a minute.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Here's something, Mike.
- 11:23Speaker 4: It's a memo pad, and here's an entry. It says,
- 11:26Speaker 4: must talk to father about Haberman's inability to do things
- 11:29Speaker 4: honestly if he can be so dishonest with the people
- 11:32Speaker 4: we are doing business with. There will come a day
- 11:35Speaker 4: when he will be as dishonest with us.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Hey, look at that later entry. Mike, the one made
- 11:39Speaker 3: the day was killed.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Here.
- 11:41Speaker 3: We'll have showdown with Haberman tonight, either he goes or
- 11:45Speaker 3: I get out of the business. Have called him and
- 11:47Speaker 3: made appointment for seven o'clock.
- 11:48Speaker 4: Wait a minute, seven o'clock, Haberman said, he made the
- 11:51Speaker 4: appointment for eight o'clock. Yeah, that's right. Come on, come on,
- 11:55Speaker 4: we better hurry up looking through this stuff, and then
- 11:56Speaker 4: a little more questioning for mister Haberman.
- 12:00Speaker 7: No matter, what's not, mister Shane inspectory, it's it's unbelievable,
- 12:03Speaker 7: it's horrible.
- 12:03Speaker 8: What is it?
- 12:04Speaker 4: What is it?
- 12:05Speaker 7: I went to the stables a few minutes ago. Go on,
- 12:07Speaker 7: go on, Haberman was lying there dead.
- 12:24Speaker 2: In just a moment, we'll rejoin Mike Shane and as
- 12:26Speaker 2: assistant Phyllers in their adventures. All of us know that
- 12:32Speaker 2: some restaurants always seem to serve better food than others,
- 12:35Speaker 2: even though their menus may read the same. The reason,
- 12:38Speaker 2: of course, is simple, better ingredients plus extra attention on
- 12:42Speaker 2: the part of skilled help. The same principles apply to
- 12:45Speaker 2: car lubrication, for example, Union Oil Stopware lubrication is more
- 12:50Speaker 2: than just a grease job. Stopware lubrication is a highly
- 12:54Speaker 2: specialized servicing process. Only trained attendants using the latest and
- 12:58Speaker 2: most modern equipment are allowed to service your car. Each
- 13:02Speaker 2: fitting and bearing is thoroughly lubricated with the finest, high
- 13:05Speaker 2: quality greases in accordance with the manufacturers specifications. While your
- 13:10Speaker 2: car is on the hoist, the minute men inspect out
- 13:12Speaker 2: of sight points and check them for danger signs. As
- 13:15Speaker 2: final evidence of the care and exactness with which stopware
- 13:18Speaker 2: lubrication is performed, you receive a thousand mile written guarantee
- 13:22Speaker 2: with each job, definite proof of reliable service. So, ladies
- 13:26Speaker 2: and gentlemen, since careful, thorough lubrication is so vital to
- 13:30Speaker 2: the life of your car, why not buy stopware. Stopware
- 13:34Speaker 2: Guaranteed lubrication is available only at Union Oil minute Man
- 13:38Speaker 2: stations and it costs no more than ordinary lubrication. Just
- 13:43Speaker 2: look for the sign of the big orange and blue
- 13:45Speaker 2: seventy six. Thank you it is a few minutes later,
- 13:54Speaker 2: Mike Phyllis and Inspector Faraday have reached the stables and
- 13:58Speaker 2: stand looking down at Haberman.
- 14:02Speaker 8: Now, how did that happen.
- 14:03Speaker 7: Well, he just got too close to Prince, and Prince
- 14:06Speaker 7: lashed out and kicked him. I found him lying here
- 14:08Speaker 7: when I came by.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Why is anybody else around the stables?
- 14:10Speaker 7: Yes, Armstrong was here, and the groom and the gardener.
- 14:14Speaker 4: Is it a bit odd that everyone should gather at
- 14:16Speaker 4: the stables.
- 14:17Speaker 7: No, I don't think so. Everybody's interested in the horses,
- 14:20Speaker 7: especially Prince. Why Prince, Well, I've warned them all to
- 14:23Speaker 7: keep away from him. He's a killer.
- 14:25Speaker 4: Why have you kept him then?
- 14:26Speaker 7: Because I can handle him? Broke in the stable hands
- 14:29Speaker 7: and he's a very valuable horse. He just lashes out
- 14:32Speaker 7: at strangers or people who don't talk to him as
- 14:33Speaker 7: they approach him. Surely you don't think this is murder too? Why,
- 14:38Speaker 7: it's ridiculous. Nobody in their right mind can have any
- 14:41Speaker 7: doubt as to how Haberman was killed. The mark of
- 14:44Speaker 7: the horseshoe is his plane two plane, where you can
- 14:47Speaker 7: see the curve of the shoe across his forehead.
- 14:49Speaker 4: And perhaps I'm not in my right mind, mister right,
- 14:52Speaker 4: but when trueman engaged in the same business die within
- 14:54Speaker 4: a few days of each other, I'm suspicious.
- 14:56Speaker 8: You and me both Mike, mister.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Wright, you just walked out from the house and found
- 15:02Speaker 4: Haberman lying dead.
- 15:03Speaker 7: Well more or less. I came out from the back
- 15:06Speaker 7: of the house, saw that the upper half of the
- 15:08Speaker 7: door the Princess stall, was unlatched. I came over to
- 15:11Speaker 7: latch it and found Haberman. I couldn't see him lying
- 15:13Speaker 7: on the ground from where I was, because, as you
- 15:15Speaker 7: can see, he was hidden by the water crawling.
- 15:17Speaker 4: Yeah, yes, I see so, Inspector, depending on how you
- 15:21Speaker 4: look at it, everybody has alibis or nobody has an alibi.
- 15:25Speaker 8: You're right, Mike. They all have alibis if they're telling
- 15:28Speaker 8: the truth.
- 15:28Speaker 7: Well, I most certainly have. I was talking on the
- 15:31Speaker 7: telephone from the time I left you until I came
- 15:33Speaker 7: out here. The servant saw me in the hall when
- 15:35Speaker 7: I was on the phone.
- 15:36Speaker 9: Oh yes, And the chauffeur and the stable boy Joe
- 15:38Speaker 9: saw me at the back of the stables.
- 15:40Speaker 2: I didn't even come around front until right called out.
- 15:42Speaker 7: That's true. I'm his alibi and he's mine. So I'm afraid,
- 15:46Speaker 7: mister Shane, you'll have to pin the guilt on the
- 15:48Speaker 7: horse after all.
- 15:49Speaker 4: Yeah, looks that.
- 15:49Speaker 8: Wait and then, oh, Mike, Yes, Inspected how about running
- 15:52Speaker 8: down the headquarters with me.
- 15:54Speaker 4: Okay, but you're going to leave someone here.
- 15:56Speaker 8: Well, I hardly think we need.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Inspect the inspected for twenty four hours. I'd like someone
- 16:00Speaker 4: posted at the stables and at the west side of
- 16:02Speaker 4: the house looking out toward the cliff. Yeah, but Mike,
- 16:04Speaker 4: if only to guarantee the safety of miss right.
- 16:07Speaker 8: Okay, Mike, I'll leave the sogeant and one man. Will
- 16:10Speaker 8: that satisfy you?
- 16:11Speaker 4: Excellent, inspector? Excellent? Now I'm quite ready to accompany you
- 16:15Speaker 4: two headquarters.
- 16:32Speaker 7: Okay, Hey, you're inspector. Report on a threatening telegram. A
- 16:35Speaker 7: threatening wire addressed to haber Man was handed in at
- 16:38Speaker 7: San Francisco's main office. No one remembers what the man
- 16:42Speaker 7: looked like.
- 16:42Speaker 8: They paid no attention. Okay, follow throwing the show for
- 16:45Speaker 8: will you?
- 16:45Speaker 9: Yes?
- 16:47Speaker 4: Well, it's not much help.
- 16:49Speaker 8: Why don't you give up, Mike? After all, we're just
- 16:51Speaker 8: following nothing but a hunch from that girl Patricia.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Now that's right, Mike. I admit it's a bit gruesome
- 16:56Speaker 3: having two deaths in the same household. It's happened before.
- 17:00Speaker 4: There's something wrong about the whole thing. What do you mean, Mike, Well,
- 17:04Speaker 4: as I see if the father, mister Wright, isn't above
- 17:07Speaker 4: entering into shady.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Deals, No, that seems apparent, So.
- 17:10Speaker 4: One can legitimately assume that his manager, Haberman, wasn't too
- 17:14Speaker 4: burst to entering into the same sort of deal.
- 17:16Speaker 8: We don't have to assume that we know it from
- 17:18Speaker 8: the son's memo path.
- 17:19Speaker 3: No, that's right. The son actually accused him of being crooked.
- 17:22Speaker 4: And we have Armstrong, a business associate. We can assume
- 17:25Speaker 4: in his case too, that he's not above turning a sort.
- 17:28Speaker 3: Of twisted penny to all of which the son is
- 17:30Speaker 3: opposed to such an extent that he actually puts in
- 17:33Speaker 3: writing he's going to talk to his father, and that
- 17:35Speaker 3: either the crooked manager goes or he does.
- 17:37Speaker 8: Right.
- 17:38Speaker 4: And if we assume too that the father would rather
- 17:40Speaker 4: have your son in the business than the crooked manager,
- 17:42Speaker 4: we have motive for murder for some men at least.
- 17:45Speaker 3: And we have Haberman making a date to see the son.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Which Haberman says was for eight o'clock, but which we
- 17:50Speaker 4: know for a fact was at seven.
- 17:52Speaker 8: Of it will inquire a case, Mike, But it all
- 17:54Speaker 8: hinges on supposition. You suppose, Mike, that you're right, eh,
- 17:59Speaker 8: And if you are right, and Hayman did kill the
- 18:01Speaker 8: son just has already overtaken him.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Yeah, but there's something wrong with the whole thing, inspected,
- 18:06Speaker 4: you say, I'm building the whole case of a subposition.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Well, plus a hunch of the girls mine.
- 18:11Speaker 4: And a funny little quirk that keeps running through my
- 18:14Speaker 4: own mind. Well, when I was a kid, I used
- 18:18Speaker 4: to hold horses at the old Fairfax Huntly. Yes, sometimes
- 18:21Speaker 4: for a whole day's work. I made two bits one day. Well,
- 18:24Speaker 4: I hadn't made my two bits. I guess I was
- 18:26Speaker 4: a little on the anxious side. I stepped up too
- 18:29Speaker 4: quickly to a horse. He lashed out at me, and
- 18:31Speaker 4: I jumped back. But that hook with its iron shoe
- 18:35Speaker 4: seemed to be following me. It was a huge as
- 18:38Speaker 4: huge as a bond door, A great big black iron
- 18:41Speaker 4: shoe that would mash my face in from chin to forehead.
- 18:44Speaker 4: A great big letter you coming out, go on, go on,
- 18:48Speaker 4: Wait a minute, wait a minute, A big you. That's it.
- 18:52Speaker 4: That's what's wrong with a picture? Oh what a blockhead?
- 18:54Speaker 4: I'd been say, what goes?
- 18:55Speaker 3: What is it? Mane?
- 18:57Speaker 8: Oh?
- 18:57Speaker 4: Come on? Can't you picture Haberman lying there on the
- 18:59Speaker 4: ground by this? Well?
- 19:00Speaker 3: Sure, I can't want to.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Remember what Wright said. The mark of the horseshoe is
- 19:04Speaker 4: a plain two plain. You can see the curve of
- 19:07Speaker 4: the shoe across his forehead.
- 19:09Speaker 8: And I remember him saying that, But what an Mike,
- 19:12Speaker 8: you're right.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Well, I don't get it. I'm gonna yes, I do.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Haberman would have had to be standing on his head
- 19:19Speaker 3: for the horseshoe to have left a mark like that.
- 19:21Speaker 4: I had a girl, Honey, the mark was upside down.
- 19:24Speaker 4: Come on, come on back to the right stables as
- 19:28Speaker 4: fast as that squad car of yours will take us,
- 19:30Speaker 4: fur day, go right back to the stables. Inspect that
- 19:44Speaker 4: we can park there, right, Mike, I'm going to follow
- 19:49Speaker 4: my hunch as long as I'm in the mood.
- 19:51Speaker 3: What do you mean, hunch?
- 19:52Speaker 4: If I were a killer and killed a man at
- 19:54Speaker 4: the stables, yes, and I was so certain that everybody
- 19:56Speaker 4: would think it was an accident, and so nobody would
- 19:58Speaker 4: even think of looking for all weapon. Yeah, where would
- 20:02Speaker 4: I go to hide the whipping?
- 20:03Speaker 2: The right?
- 20:04Speaker 4: So come on up these steps here, honey. I'll help
- 20:08Speaker 4: you there. I know that here we are. Now you
- 20:13Speaker 4: take the par in, honey, and okay, and I'll take
- 20:16Speaker 4: the sin. Oh, it's not behind the speed box. It's
- 20:25Speaker 4: not here either. Where's it? Where's phyllis? Okay? Anything up there, Inspector.
- 20:31Speaker 8: Everything up here is covered with dust, so I think
- 20:33Speaker 8: this is all in the clay.
- 20:34Speaker 4: Okay, come down then, before you break your neck. What
- 20:37Speaker 4: what is it? Honey?
- 20:39Speaker 3: It's something heavy and wet, huh and of sticky. It's blood.
- 20:46Speaker 4: Mike, let me have it. I'll use my handkerchief and
- 20:49Speaker 4: maybe fingerprints.
- 20:50Speaker 8: What is it?
- 20:51Speaker 4: Just a second, god, look, Inspector.
- 20:58Speaker 3: A heavy piece of but with a horseshoe nailed to
- 21:02Speaker 3: the flat side upside down.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Okay, Okay, let's keep our find a secret and continue
- 21:10Speaker 4: our quizzing.
- 21:22Speaker 2: We'll rejoin Mike Shane pill Us Knight and inspect your
- 21:25Speaker 2: paraday and their search for the killer in dust. MoMA,
- 21:32Speaker 2: we'd like you to listen for a moment to one
- 21:34Speaker 2: of the most sickening sounds of modern life. Lately, you've
- 21:47Speaker 2: been hearing that sound more frequently. Traffic accidents in the
- 21:50Speaker 2: United States are increasing to an alarming extent as our
- 21:54Speaker 2: automobiles grow older. To reduce human casualties and conserve transportation,
- 21:59Speaker 2: the Internettional Association of Chiefs of Police has developed a
- 22:03Speaker 2: program to emphasize the need for good breaks for all cars.
- 22:07Speaker 2: For the next six weeks, law enforcement officers throughout the
- 22:11Speaker 2: nation will conduct a brake checking campaign. They are seeking
- 22:15Speaker 2: to protect your life and property. This program on brake
- 22:19Speaker 2: emphasis for traffic safety is supported by over one hundred
- 22:23Speaker 2: automobile clubs and traffic organizations, including the Office of Defense Transportation.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Your cooperation is earnestly requested. You can help by checking
- 22:33Speaker 2: your own brakes. If you can depress your brake pedal
- 22:36Speaker 2: within an inch of the floorboard before the brakes take hold,
- 22:40Speaker 2: they are inadequate and demand immediate attention. Remember, serious accidents
- 22:45Speaker 2: can occur at speeds as low as twenty miles per
- 22:47Speaker 2: hour if your brakes are in poor condition. So ladies
- 22:51Speaker 2: and gentlemen, if you have the slightest doubt about the
- 22:53Speaker 2: condition of your automobile brakes, don't take chances. Have them
- 22:57Speaker 2: inspected without delay. Mike Phyllis, Inspector Faraday, and Patricia Wright
- 23:07Speaker 2: are in the library waiting for the members of the
- 23:10Speaker 2: household to put in an appearance.
- 23:12Speaker 6: Are you sure you don't want me to get Daddy
- 23:14Speaker 6: and the others in here?
- 23:15Speaker 4: No? No, not yet. We let them wander in one
- 23:18Speaker 4: of the time and take them by surprise. I have
- 23:20Speaker 4: a reason.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Hey, what about the show for Mike.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Well, my money, he's out.
- 23:23Speaker 8: I'm right.
- 23:24Speaker 4: Well, as a suspect for the killing of the son
- 23:25Speaker 4: who fired him, he was a possibility, but I see
- 23:28Speaker 4: no connection between him and Haberman's dead.
- 23:30Speaker 3: No, perhaps not. Don't forget one thing. He is the
- 23:33Speaker 3: alibi for Armstrong, just as Armstrong is his alibi.
- 23:35Speaker 4: The way I'm thinking right now, honey, no one has
- 23:37Speaker 4: an alibi. What do you mean when all the suspects
- 23:40Speaker 4: have alibis for their actions, and yet you have two
- 23:43Speaker 4: bodies to account for. There's only one act one that
- 23:45Speaker 4: is someone or all of them are lying and the
- 23:49Speaker 4: alibis mean nothing. So just ignore them.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Mike, somebody's coming, that's right.
- 23:53Speaker 7: Oh, there you are, Pat What?
- 23:55Speaker 4: Oh?
- 23:55Speaker 7: I thought you'd all gone back to the city.
- 23:57Speaker 4: We did say that we have a few more questions we'd.
- 23:59Speaker 7: Like answer, if you don't mind my saying. So, I
- 24:03Speaker 7: think you're not quite.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Bright meaning what mister Wright, Meaning.
- 24:07Speaker 7: That you're all following a completely senseless theory, trying to
- 24:10Speaker 7: find clues to a murder when no murder has been
- 24:11Speaker 7: committed to everyone but you. It's obvious that mister Haberman
- 24:15Speaker 7: had been kicked by Prince.
- 24:16Speaker 4: Suppose we just get that for a moment. Uh, mister Wright,
- 24:20Speaker 4: just exactly what is the relationship between your firm and
- 24:23Speaker 4: mister Armstrong.
- 24:23Speaker 8: I don't see that it's any of your business. Or now,
- 24:25Speaker 8: let's not go through that route.
- 24:27Speaker 7: You let me finish. I still think it's none of
- 24:30Speaker 7: your business, but I'm perfectly willing to tell you mister
- 24:33Speaker 7: Armstrong is an agent for some eastern industrial properties which
- 24:35Speaker 7: we're considering purchasing.
- 24:36Speaker 4: I see, And was mister Haberman in complete agreement with
- 24:39Speaker 4: you about this purchase?
- 24:40Speaker 7: He was up until a few nights ago.
- 24:43Speaker 3: What or who changed his mind?
- 24:45Speaker 7: Well, my son wasn't too happy about the deal, and
- 24:49Speaker 7: I think he changed Haberman's mind.
- 24:50Speaker 8: When did your son tell you that you either fired
- 24:53Speaker 8: Haberman nor he would leave the company?
- 24:55Speaker 4: What? Why? No, no, no, no, don't get all insulted
- 24:58Speaker 4: and abusive. We know you're son did tell you that, Patricia.
- 25:01Speaker 3: If your daughter had nothing to do with our knowing.
- 25:03Speaker 4: That, mister Wright, let's not argue about it. It is true,
- 25:06Speaker 4: isn't it?
- 25:07Speaker 8: Yes?
- 25:08Speaker 4: And what did you decide?
- 25:10Speaker 8: Well?
- 25:10Speaker 7: Go on, answered, Well, I hadn't made up my mind.
- 25:13Speaker 7: I sort of hope that things would work themselves out.
- 25:16Speaker 4: And they have said based by the death of your
- 25:18Speaker 4: son and next Haberman, both troublesome elements removed within a.
- 25:23Speaker 7: Surely you don't You can't think that I'd connive in
- 25:26Speaker 7: the death of my own son. But Tricia you yes, father,
- 25:29Speaker 7: you don't believe that I had anything to do with no.
- 25:32Speaker 4: Dead and I don't either, nor do Miss Knight and
- 25:35Speaker 4: Inspector Farity.
- 25:36Speaker 7: Well, I I'm glad of that. I'm glad too that
- 25:40Speaker 7: you're coming to your senses and realizing that my boy's
- 25:43Speaker 7: death was an accident.
- 25:44Speaker 4: No, mister Wright, your son's death was not an accident
- 25:46Speaker 4: anymore than Haberman's was.
- 25:48Speaker 8: Who could you possibly suspect who stands to gain by
- 25:51Speaker 8: both deaths?
- 25:52Speaker 7: Why?
- 25:53Speaker 8: No one?
- 25:53Speaker 4: What about Armstrong?
- 25:55Speaker 8: Armstrong?
- 25:56Speaker 7: But Armstrong you mean that Armstrong was a free that
- 26:00Speaker 7: my son's objection to our deal and later Aberman's objection
- 26:03Speaker 7: might cause a deal to fall through.
- 26:04Speaker 4: Exactly, mister rydam It's very easy to prove that is
- 26:07Speaker 4: it will be easy if you will cooperate.
- 26:09Speaker 7: Oh, oh, certainly, I'll cooperate in any way I can.
- 26:13Speaker 3: You haven't been very cooperative so far as well.
- 26:16Speaker 7: I'll I'll do whatever you ask me to.
- 26:18Speaker 4: Now we're getting somewhere. Now here's what we'll do. Phyllis
- 26:20Speaker 4: the inspector, and I will hide Phyllis behind the curtains
- 26:23Speaker 4: leading to the terrace. The inspector in that closet, and
- 26:25Speaker 4: I'll get behind the door. Yes, Patricia will go to
- 26:28Speaker 4: her own room. You, you, mister Wright, will call Armstrong
- 26:31Speaker 4: in and tell him you're not going through with the deal.
- 26:34Speaker 4: I'm quite certain his reaction will be enough to convince you.
- 26:36Speaker 7: Well, I don't think i'll find that difficult. I'd practically
- 26:39Speaker 7: made up my mind that anyway.
- 26:41Speaker 6: Aming in the front door.
- 26:43Speaker 4: All right, all right, now quick, everybody quick gets you
- 26:46Speaker 4: went upstairs Patricia wanting okay, right, call him in?
- 26:54Speaker 7: Uh oh that you arm Strong?
- 26:58Speaker 8: Yes?
- 26:58Speaker 7: Did you want me?
- 26:59Speaker 3: Yes?
- 27:00Speaker 7: Yes, I I think, in spite of all the tragedy
- 27:03Speaker 7: around here, that we ought to arrive at some definite
- 27:05Speaker 7: conclusion about this transaction.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Well, I suppose you're right.
- 27:08Speaker 9: I didn't want to hurry you or seem aggressive with
- 27:10Speaker 9: all the things that have happened.
- 27:11Speaker 7: Yes, yes, I understand, but it.
- 27:12Speaker 9: Is an excellent opportunity, and I know you'll make a
- 27:14Speaker 9: mint out of it.
- 27:15Speaker 7: I'm not going through with it, however. What I'm not
- 27:20Speaker 7: going through with it? Armstrong?
- 27:23Speaker 4: Oh you're not? Well, that's what you think. I said that.
- 27:27Speaker 9: If you think you're going to back out, now, you've
- 27:28Speaker 9: got another thing coming.
- 27:29Speaker 7: Oh wait a minute, leaving me holding the sack.
- 27:32Speaker 9: I've obligated myself for those properties, and you're gonna buy them.
- 27:34Speaker 7: I'm most certainly not going to buy them if I
- 27:36Speaker 7: don't want to. Menapho, Persuadeion.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Put that gun down your food, drop it, Armstrong? The
- 27:41Speaker 4: next time, the faster.
- 27:43Speaker 2: What is this?
- 27:44Speaker 4: Is this a trap?
- 27:45Speaker 9: Way?
- 27:45Speaker 8: It is, yes, and apparently quite a justifiable one.
- 27:48Speaker 4: I must apologize for the gunplay, and I must apologize
- 27:51Speaker 4: for being quite slow and somewhat blind.
- 27:54Speaker 3: Blind Mike, Yes, yes.
- 27:56Speaker 4: I should have noticed long before this that mister Armstrong
- 27:58Speaker 4: was left handed. I did, however, until he whipped out
- 28:01Speaker 4: that gun of his with his.
- 28:02Speaker 3: Left hand left handed.
- 28:03Speaker 8: Yes, Phil, left handed?
- 28:06Speaker 4: What does that matter?
- 28:07Speaker 2: I've been left handed all my life.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Yes, Armstrong, left handed. I think you can produce the
- 28:13Speaker 4: evidence now, Inspector right, Mike, did you ever see that
- 28:20Speaker 4: weapon before? Armstrong? Where did you find it in the halo?
- 28:27Speaker 4: That's where you will hit it, isn't it? Armstrong? Okay, Inspector,
- 28:31Speaker 4: I don't think we'll get any more argument out of him.
- 28:34Speaker 4: You're ready, Armstrong?
- 28:36Speaker 5: Yeah, yes, you want more coffee, Inspector.
- 28:55Speaker 8: No, thanks, fellas. That was an excellent dinner.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Oh say that again, Angel, He was a good cook flatterer,
- 29:01Speaker 4: as well as being good at poetry review.
- 29:05Speaker 3: Say that left handed business. I've been turning it over
- 29:07Speaker 3: and over in my mind. I don't see what on
- 29:09Speaker 3: earth Armstrong's being left handed had to do with the
- 29:11Speaker 3: case tall hmm, Well, I thought perhaps his being left
- 29:14Speaker 3: handed was well responsible for him nailing the horseshoe on
- 29:17Speaker 3: the club the wrong way.
- 29:19Speaker 4: Oh no, Angel, No, that was just the inevitable slip
- 29:22Speaker 4: that the murderer makes.
- 29:23Speaker 3: Well, then, what was the left handed clue?
- 29:26Speaker 4: When I remarked on Armstrong's being left handed, you repeated
- 29:30Speaker 4: it after me, remember.
- 29:31Speaker 8: Yeah, sure, I caught the look, and mike' s iron
- 29:34Speaker 8: repeated it after you.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Well, yes, I remember that too. It impressed me, but
- 29:38Speaker 3: I didn't catch on.
- 29:39Speaker 4: Ah, it impressed Armstrong too, and he didn't catch on.
- 29:43Speaker 4: He didn't know why or what we have in mind,
- 29:46Speaker 4: and the inspector and I didn't give him time to
- 29:48Speaker 4: find out. We played cat and most with him. Armstrong
- 29:52Speaker 4: thought that his being left handed was a clue. He
- 29:55Speaker 4: couldn't figure out what it was, but our tone of
- 29:58Speaker 4: voice convinced him that we had him dead rights and
- 30:02Speaker 4: he broke down Smarty.
- 30:06Speaker 3: There was nothing but playing up a guilty conscience.
- 30:10Speaker 4: Right angel, one of the best weapons of Private Detective
- 30:13Speaker 4: has So let it be a Listen to you there, Donald,
- 30:16Speaker 4: and don't try holding out anything on your own, man,
- 30:18Speaker 4: Mike Shane, or your good old conscience will get you.
- 30:22Speaker 2: See John and again next week at eight thirty for
- 30:58Speaker 2: another adventure with Michael Shane Private Detective, starring Wally Mayer
- 31:03Speaker 2: and Kathy Lewis and Joe Forte as Inspector Faraday. Tonight's
- 31:08Speaker 2: story was written and produced by David Taylor and based
- 31:12Speaker 2: on the character created by Brett Halliday. Music was composed
- 31:16Speaker 2: and directed by Bernard Katz. This is John Lang saying
- 31:20Speaker 2: good night for the people who make seventy six Gasoline
- 31:23Speaker 2: and Twyton Motor Oil, Union Oil Company.
- 31:36Speaker 7: This is the.
- 31:36Speaker 10: Mutual Don Lee Broadcasting System.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Welcome back.
- 31:53Speaker 4: Well.
- 31:53Speaker 1: A good story, though a little bit more puzzle base
- 32:00Speaker 1: and deduction base that I'd expect a Michael Shane's story
- 32:04Speaker 1: to be. In some ways, it almost seemed like it
- 32:06Speaker 1: was like a Charlie Chan story, but done with Michael Shane. Still,
- 32:12Speaker 1: I have to appreciate that they sold the final clue
- 32:16Speaker 1: as something more than a plot contrivance. Mike Shane really
- 32:21Speaker 1: does make it seem clever. At any rate. We do
- 32:24Speaker 1: turn to listener comments and feedback now, and then after
- 32:28Speaker 1: that I'll talk about the upcoming video theater episode of
- 32:32Speaker 1: Michael Shane. Laurie provides a thumbs up to Michael Shane.
- 32:37Speaker 1: She says, I enjoyed this one. I liked the story
- 32:41Speaker 1: and thought it was well done. Well, thank you glad
- 32:44Speaker 1: you enjoyed it. Lauren's comments. I liked Adman McDonald and
- 32:49Speaker 1: filmed in the films Detour and Sherlock Holmes in Washington.
- 32:54Speaker 1: I liked him as Michael Sane as well. Died so
- 32:56Speaker 1: young at the age of forty three certainly is true,
- 33:02Speaker 1: and it's true of a lot of actors who died
- 33:05Speaker 1: at eceedingly young ages. Because Wally Mayor, the star of
- 33:10Speaker 1: the show, he actually died at the age of forty
- 33:14Speaker 1: three as well, and Kathy Lewis died at the age
- 33:19Speaker 1: of fifty two, and she died of lung cancer. And
- 33:25Speaker 1: that's probably a fair point to point many of these
- 33:30Speaker 1: stars died before their time in part to just the
- 33:34Speaker 1: not only the prevalence of smoking, but the amount of
- 33:39Speaker 1: smoking that people did. Wally Maher had respiratory problems throughout
- 33:44Speaker 1: his life and I can't imagine being in Hollywood in
- 33:48Speaker 1: that atmosphere helped a whole lot. So yeah, it is
- 33:53Speaker 1: sad he had a lot of actors in this era
- 33:56Speaker 1: dime before their time. We also have a tweet from
- 34:00Speaker 1: Johnny who writes, listen to the show for the first time,
- 34:05Speaker 1: love that you are keeping this form of entertainment alive,
- 34:09Speaker 1: and that one was from at Warlocks Brew Well, thanks
- 34:12Speaker 1: so much, appreciate your comment, Johnny. And now we get
- 34:16Speaker 1: into discussing the upcoming video theater episode next Monday or
- 34:23Speaker 1: next Sunday, I should say, and it features Michael Shane.
- 34:27Speaker 1: It's from the summer replacement series Decision, and it's a
- 34:32Speaker 1: Michael Shane story starring my Stevens. Now Stevens doesn't look
- 34:37Speaker 1: a whole lot like Michael Shane, but that could be
- 34:41Speaker 1: said of most actors who played the role. The episode
- 34:45Speaker 1: aired in nineteen fifty eight, and it was also the
- 34:50Speaker 1: basis for a pilot program. They basically took this episode
- 34:55Speaker 1: of Decision, added some promotion and all material, and made
- 34:59Speaker 1: it the pilot for the Michael Shane TV Show to
- 35:03Speaker 1: be shown for sponsors. And so we'll be watching that program.
- 35:07Speaker 1: It's only half an hour and it'll certainly make for
- 35:10Speaker 1: interesting viewing. Ironically enough, the plot reminded me of a
- 35:14Speaker 1: later Michael Shane novel that'd be written by Britt Halladay.
- 35:18Speaker 1: And for the foreseeable future, for about the next year anyway,
- 35:23Speaker 1: Michael Shane will be the focus of our non dragging
- 35:26Speaker 1: that video theater. We're going through a period where all
- 35:30Speaker 1: of our video theater episodes will be tied in with
- 35:34Speaker 1: radio programs we're airing. We started that with Ellery Queen,
- 35:38Speaker 1: it'll continue with Michael Shane and Richard Diamond and then
- 35:42Speaker 1: Boston Blackie. And we'll talk a little bit more about
- 35:46Speaker 1: the actual Michael Shane TV show that aired for a
- 35:52Speaker 1: thirty two episode season from nineteen sixty to sixty one
- 35:56Speaker 1: when we get to the point of playing it, I
- 35:59Speaker 1: did just actually go through all of my Michael Shane
- 36:03Speaker 1: TV shows to organize them, and so I got to
- 36:06Speaker 1: see the start of each show, and there's a very
- 36:10Speaker 1: interesting one with Howard mcneir looking every bit the part
- 36:15Speaker 1: of Floyd the barber doing something Floyd would never do.
- 36:19Speaker 1: It's a very shocking beginning and I'm definitely eager to
- 36:23Speaker 1: play that episode, but we've got about a year to
- 36:25Speaker 1: go on that. So look for Michael Shane TV shows
- 36:29Speaker 1: every month starting this month. That will do it for now.
