Transcript
- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Lucas, we are still at the gym, right? Lucas: We are. And today we are going to focus on one very practical thing: asking for a towel. Luna: Oh, I definitely need that. After a workout, I always need a towel. Lucas: Exactly. So let's start with the most important phrase: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Lucas: Good. 'Ich brauche' means 'I need', 'ein Handtuch' is 'a towel'. So together: I need a towel. Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. I need a towel. Lucas: Perfect. Now, if you don't know where the towels are, you can ask: Wo sind die Handtücher? Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? Where are the towels? Lucas: Yes. 'Wo sind' means 'where are', 'die Handtücher' is 'the towels'. Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? That sounds clear. Lucas: Now, if you want to ask a staff member directly: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Do you have a towel for me? Lucas: Exactly. 'Haben Sie' is formal 'do you have', 'für mich' is 'for me'. Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? I can imagine using that. Lucas: And if they tell you where the towels are, they might say: Die Handtücher sind dort. Luna: Die Handtücher sind dort. The towels are there. Lucas: Right. 'Dort' means 'there'. Luna: So I can ask 'Wo sind die Handtücher?' and they point and say 'Die Handtücher sind dort.' That makes sense. Lucas: And one more polite request: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Luna: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Can I have a towel? Lucas: Yes. 'Kann ich... haben' means 'can I have'. Luna: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? That's a nice polite way. Lucas: Now let's put them in a little scene. Imagine you're at the gym and you just finished a run. You're sweaty. Luna: Yeah, definitely. So I go to the front desk and say: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Lucas: The staff member says: Die Handtücher sind dort. Then you might ask: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Luna: And they say: Ja, natürlich. Here you go. Lucas: Perfect. So let's practice each one a few times. Repeat after me: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Lucas: Wo sind die Handtücher? Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? Lucas: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Lucas: Die Handtücher sind dort. Luna: Die Handtücher sind dort. Lucas: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Luna: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Lucas: Great. Now, let's do a quick quiz. I'll say the English, you say the German. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Lucas: I need a towel. Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Lucas: Where are the towels? Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? Lucas: Do you have a towel for me? Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Lucas: The towels are there. Luna: Die Handtücher sind dort. Lucas: Can I have a towel? Luna: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Lucas: Excellent. You're getting really comfortable with these. Luna: Yeah, they're practical. I can see myself using them. And someone points and says: Die Handtücher sind dort. Lucas: Right. And if you need a clean one, you say: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Luna: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Simple. Lucas: Let's do one more round. I'll say the German, you repeat. Luna: Okay. Lucas: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Lucas: Wo sind die Handtücher? Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? Lucas: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Lucas: Die Handtücher sind dort. Luna: Die Handtücher sind dort.
