- 0:52Speaker 1: have a brother of mine. Listen. I met this brother
- 0:55Speaker 1: many years ago and we were talking about it on
- 0:58Speaker 1: a live that we did for his one man show.
- 1:00Speaker 1: But I'm excited to have him to share his new film,
- 1:04Speaker 1: Ruth and Boass. This film, I believe I had the
- 1:08Speaker 1: opportunity to watch it. I believe for you ladies, it's
- 1:10Speaker 1: gonna provide a lot of hope. So Devon had you
- 1:13Speaker 1: all in mind. But anyway, without further ado, I want
- 1:16Speaker 1: to welcome my brother, my brother and friend, filmmaker Devon Franklin.
- 1:20Speaker 1: How are you doing, brother, kid said the lady. Come
- 1:23Speaker 1: in listen, brothers, I will say, Brothers, if you have
- 1:29Speaker 1: this type of journey, I probably I will see you
- 1:31Speaker 1: at the altar. Okay. I felt incouraged. Okay, that's good.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I felt in courage on my single journey. Man, I said, listen,
- 1:38Speaker 1: I know I'm a bow ass man. I know I
- 1:40Speaker 1: got some got some things with me man that I
- 1:43Speaker 1: would would be open to share with my roof So Man,
- 1:49Speaker 1: thank you brother for joining the healing community, Man Jesse.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Here with doctor j Man. This platform and this this
- 1:57Speaker 1: space is for conversations that provide healing and conversation that
- 2:02Speaker 1: allow people to share their journey. And I think what
- 2:05Speaker 1: you did with this film is so much healing man
- 2:09Speaker 1: all over this film.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Man.
- 2:10Speaker 1: So my first question to you is is I ask
- 2:13Speaker 1: every guest, because my background is a therapist, how are
- 2:18Speaker 1: you feeling, just in this moment now? Feeling good? You
- 2:20Speaker 1: know what I mean? Feeling good? Man? You look good man. Yeah,
- 2:25Speaker 1: I could tell. Man, I got to ask you, what
- 2:27Speaker 1: is your secret? Oh? Man? You know what?
- 2:30Speaker 2: The secret honestly is embracing the moment, right, like really
- 2:36Speaker 2: just saying okay, this is where I am, and being
- 2:39Speaker 2: okay with it, you know that inner you know, being
- 2:44Speaker 2: settled on the inside, like that is the thing that
- 2:46Speaker 2: really helps me, you know, feel better. Right, It's like, okay,
- 2:49Speaker 2: you know, I'm dealing with different things and different challenges
- 2:52Speaker 2: at work and you know, productions and stuff, and it's like.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Okay, like it's all right, this is where we are,
- 2:56Speaker 1: how we're going to move forward.
- 2:57Speaker 2: But finding being centered is what really helps me kind
- 3:02Speaker 2: of keep a baseline, not doesn't mean that every moment
- 3:05Speaker 2: is like I'm feeling great line right, the baseline of like, okay,
- 3:08Speaker 2: this is happening, all right, So all right, it's happening.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Let me figure out what my response is to it.
- 3:12Speaker 2: And that just keeps me grounded. And then also having
- 3:14Speaker 2: the right woman in my life. I mean, you know,
- 3:16Speaker 2: certainly you know my wife, I mean, my goodness, I
- 3:18Speaker 2: mean we talk about your art, right, it just is like,
- 3:21Speaker 2: no matter what I'm dealing with, knowing I have heard, man,
- 3:24Speaker 2: I'm good So what.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I hear two things. What I hear you saying, brother is,
- 3:28Speaker 1: for one, always be where your feet are planted. Amen. Yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 1: I think we don't realize how much that can minimize anxiety,
- 3:36Speaker 1: because anxiety is being here and wanting to be there
- 3:38Speaker 1: there you go, you know, And I love that being
- 3:41Speaker 1: where your feet are planted, and then just embracing the moment.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And then partnership and for a lot of brothers that
- 3:48Speaker 1: I have a lot of men that follow my work,
- 3:51Speaker 1: you know, my background being a pro athlete, and men
- 3:55Speaker 1: are really interested on what does life look like with
- 3:59Speaker 1: the right partner and as you just so you know,
- 4:04Speaker 1: talk about you know, having your wife and having that
- 4:06Speaker 1: how important is that man, particularly in the space that
- 4:09Speaker 1: you're in as a creative Yeah.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Man, listen, I find it important, you know, having the
- 4:15Speaker 2: right partner. And then I think as a man. You know,
- 4:17Speaker 2: a lot of times we're conditioned to believe that, oh well,
- 4:20Speaker 2: you know, settling down, you know is a problem. You know,
- 4:25Speaker 2: we're conditioned to be like to think that the more
- 4:28Speaker 2: the better, But in my experience, you know, the more
- 4:31Speaker 2: the chaos. Okay, you know, it's like and then so
- 4:38Speaker 2: what happens is when you buy into that philosophy as
- 4:40Speaker 2: a man, Okay, well, the more women I have, you know,
- 4:42Speaker 2: the better off I'll be.
- 4:43Speaker 1: The No, we just become better chaos managers. You know
- 4:47Speaker 1: that's good. Brothers. Listen, y'all brothers out here, y'all hopping
- 4:52Speaker 1: on these poly trains. Man, y'all better hit his brothers.
- 4:55Speaker 2: So so for me, you know, as a man, you know,
- 4:58Speaker 2: finding the right partner, you what happens is on the inside,
- 5:02Speaker 2: there's that piece because I'm committing my life to her
- 5:06Speaker 2: and she's dimitting her life to me, and we create
- 5:09Speaker 2: space and keep space for one another in that.
- 5:12Speaker 1: That's good.
- 5:13Speaker 2: So because of that, there's peace, right and having that
- 5:16Speaker 2: right partner who you know has your bad who you
- 5:18Speaker 2: can talk to, who you can talk with, who respects
- 5:21Speaker 2: you and you respect them. For us as men, I
- 5:24Speaker 2: believe that it is a game changer because it is
- 5:29Speaker 2: very easy on some level in terms of emotionally, it's
- 5:32Speaker 2: very easy to manage more more than one, right, Yeah,
- 5:34Speaker 2: because emotionally you don't have to You don't ever have.
- 5:36Speaker 1: To do the work, No you don't. But when you're
- 5:39Speaker 1: with one, you got to dig in and do the work.
- 5:42Speaker 2: And when you're with the right partner, that work is worthwhile.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Man, brother, that's a book. That's a book is never
- 5:50Speaker 1: that is a book, man, because I think devine, you know,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and for men like us right that we've achieved and
- 5:58Speaker 1: you see a lot of men, particular for black brothers,
- 6:02Speaker 1: that when we achieve success, and if you came from nothing,
- 6:06Speaker 1: there is this notion that I have to get it
- 6:09Speaker 1: all and getting there and getting it all is that
- 6:13Speaker 1: I got to have more. And what I'm hearing from
- 6:16Speaker 1: you is making that decision to choose. It's not only
- 6:20Speaker 1: settling your life, but it's also allowing you to settle
- 6:23Speaker 1: into the piece of what a covenant relationship would do. Yeah.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Absolutely, And I think it settles you into peace and
- 6:30Speaker 2: it also settles you into purpose there. I mean, listen,
- 6:34Speaker 2: you know how it is when you're dating, okay and
- 6:37Speaker 2: you're trying to you know, figure it out. What happens
- 6:39Speaker 2: is you spend a lot of time, energy, money, you know,
- 6:44Speaker 2: going with this one or doing that with that one,
- 6:46Speaker 2: and this and that and and that. Think about all
- 6:48Speaker 2: the energy and tells money spit to managing. That's why
- 6:50Speaker 2: I'm talking about it's as management. It's exhausting and think
- 6:54Speaker 2: about if if you had all of that time and
- 6:56Speaker 2: energy and money not only to pour into one person,
- 6:58Speaker 2: but also poor into your purpose a think about the progress,
- 7:02Speaker 2: think about the impact. And so it's it's very important.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Every man has to choose their.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Own path, you know.
- 7:07Speaker 2: But for me, you know, going through my season of
- 7:09Speaker 2: single and you know, really trying to figure it out,
- 7:12Speaker 2: you know, being able to you know, have received you know,
- 7:14Speaker 2: my wife, and to be able to then start to
- 7:17Speaker 2: build you know, a life with her, it has been
- 7:20Speaker 2: you know, a phenomenal game changing for man.
- 7:22Speaker 1: That's so amazing. Brother, my, my, my. As you were talking,
- 7:28Speaker 1: my thought is what stands out to you? You know,
- 7:32Speaker 1: as you came out of the singleness, and then you said, man,
- 7:35Speaker 1: I want to choose her. What was the thing if
- 7:38Speaker 1: you can give me like two things that stood out
- 7:39Speaker 1: to you. Because brothers you know that are married, I'm
- 7:41Speaker 1: always asking them what was it about her? Yeah? You know,
- 7:45Speaker 1: because when we choose, well, women don't realize man, when
- 7:48Speaker 1: we choose, we're choosing according to something about you that
- 7:52Speaker 1: have pulled our heart because you may you know, I
- 7:56Speaker 1: have to tell these you know a lot of single ladies.
- 7:58Speaker 1: You may get his body and that's what y'all doing.
- 8:01Speaker 1: But when you grab a man's heart, yeah, and you
- 8:05Speaker 1: shift that heart to where he said, I'm going to
- 8:08Speaker 1: choose you, you you've done a number on them. So
- 8:14Speaker 1: what was it about your wife, man that made you
- 8:17Speaker 1: sens man?
- 8:18Speaker 2: It's her, you know, it was really her nurturing spirit,
- 8:24Speaker 2: and it's just it's it's a hard thing to describe,
- 8:27Speaker 2: but you know, she is such a loving, you know person.
- 8:31Speaker 2: And you know from the time that I was young,
- 8:33Speaker 2: the middle chimeter three boys, and my finally died of
- 8:36Speaker 2: a heart attack when he was thirty six, and so
- 8:38Speaker 2: my mother, you know, raised us, you know, pretty much
- 8:40Speaker 2: on her on her own, with the help of my
- 8:42Speaker 2: grandmother and my grandmother's seven sisters. But growing up, you know,
- 8:47Speaker 2: we were in survival mode a lot of the time, right,
- 8:49Speaker 2: you know, getting makes your food was on the table,
- 8:51Speaker 2: and clothes on her back, get to school and and
- 8:54Speaker 2: all those things, and keep a roof over you know,
- 8:56Speaker 2: our heads up. That's how we were. We were, And
- 8:58Speaker 2: so you know, a part of me, you know, didn't
- 9:00Speaker 2: necessarily feel nurtured. And so when I met Maria, you know,
- 9:04Speaker 2: her disposition to me was, you know, I see that
- 9:08Speaker 2: inner child in you. You know, I want to hug
- 9:11Speaker 2: that bah.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Come on, come on, brother, come on, come on brother.
- 9:14Speaker 1: You're talking about talk. We get that's what she says
- 9:17Speaker 1: to me.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I want to, I want to I see him and
- 9:19Speaker 2: I want to hold You'll let him know he's okay.
- 9:22Speaker 1: So man, wait when wait? She talking like that? I'm like,
- 9:25Speaker 1: all right, we're good. Let's say, will you know? Will
- 9:28Speaker 1: you marry me?
- 9:29Speaker 2: You know?
- 9:29Speaker 1: It was like all right, let's go because I ain't
- 9:31Speaker 1: had that, you know what I mean? Man?
- 9:33Speaker 2: That was that really spoke to me on a deep level.
- 9:36Speaker 2: And then what that does is it produces a piece yes,
- 9:42Speaker 2: that I'm with someone that is not about performing or
- 9:45Speaker 2: it's about how much I got or what I know.
- 9:48Speaker 2: It's about like, oh no, this person sees me and
- 9:51Speaker 2: loves me and wants to care for me on on
- 9:55Speaker 2: the deepest level. And and then what happens as men
- 9:59Speaker 2: when we find that, then it's like, yo, I'll give
- 10:01Speaker 2: you the world like whatever you need it like, don't
- 10:04Speaker 2: even think about.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Before you even speak.
- 10:06Speaker 2: It's done because you're giving me what I need and
- 10:09Speaker 2: I can't find that in anybody else.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Y'all better pick up these gems. Is his brothers. Listen
- 10:15Speaker 1: what I love about what you shared? CJ, my producer.
- 10:20Speaker 1: We talk about relationships all the time, and one of
- 10:23Speaker 1: the things that I say, Bro, I don't know how
- 10:26Speaker 1: many women can really identify the little boy in the
- 10:31Speaker 1: man that needs to be hugged, because when you're raised
- 10:35Speaker 1: on survival like you were, I was raised on survival.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I'm the oldest of three, and when you're raised on survival,
- 10:42Speaker 1: on surviving, you don't have an understanding of how to
- 10:46Speaker 1: receive because everything is about how do I make it
- 10:50Speaker 1: through this day? And when you think about making it
- 10:52Speaker 1: through this day, you think about, Okay, how do I
- 10:55Speaker 1: show up? And when you're showing up, it's often performing,
- 11:01Speaker 1: so I'm usually looking for us, and if that stops,
- 11:06Speaker 1: I'm like, well, I don't know what was happening. Because
- 11:09Speaker 1: I've been taught and even shape socially environmental, that if
- 11:14Speaker 1: you don't do anything, no one is going to clap
- 11:17Speaker 1: for you. So we now begin to think that everything
- 11:21Speaker 1: about our existence has to be about receiving the praise
- 11:26Speaker 1: and receiving the applause. And what I'm hearing from you
- 11:30Speaker 1: is that you saw an audience that said I'll clap
- 11:35Speaker 1: if you do nothing.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Yes, exactly, one thousand percent. I'm clapping just because of
- 11:42Speaker 2: who you were, just because of.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Who you are period. In fact, the little boy don't
- 11:46Speaker 1: have to you remember these little boys especially you have
- 11:49Speaker 1: family over. We all wanted to go into the living
- 11:52Speaker 1: room and put on the show. Yep, exactly get those
- 11:55Speaker 1: little dollars, you know. And what she's saying is, I
- 12:00Speaker 1: just want the little boy to be held exactly, and
- 12:03Speaker 1: that is not did that feel man for you? When
- 12:08Speaker 1: your little boy was acknowledged? What did that do for
- 12:11Speaker 1: the man? And it provided deep healing.
- 12:14Speaker 2: You know, because I you know, to your point, like
- 12:16Speaker 2: you know I talk about in the Be True you
- 12:19Speaker 2: Know book, I talk about how I was an achievement addict, right,
- 12:23Speaker 2: and that achievement was to you know, there to you know,
- 12:26Speaker 2: try to really fill that hole in my soul. And
- 12:28Speaker 2: so to your point, like wanting the praise, wanting the accolades,
- 12:31Speaker 2: and then if those things weren't there, if the applause
- 12:34Speaker 2: weren't there, at times, I wouldn't feel, you know, good
- 12:37Speaker 2: about myself. And so getting to the place where I
- 12:40Speaker 2: have a partner who says, you know, I know what
- 12:43Speaker 2: you do in the world, and all that's great, that's wonderful,
- 12:46Speaker 2: and I'm proud of you, but you need to know
- 12:49Speaker 2: that I accept you for you, not for what you do.
- 12:53Speaker 1: And so that just it.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Created a piece, It created a healing, you know, so
- 12:57Speaker 2: much so that like as as men, you know, prior
- 13:00Speaker 2: to I think finding the right partner and making the
- 13:03Speaker 2: commitment to that partner, we don't realize how much turmoil
- 13:08Speaker 2: our souls are in man talk about it as well.
- 13:11Speaker 2: It's almost like there's there's an inner storm that we
- 13:14Speaker 2: just get so used to that innertension, that inner frustration,
- 13:18Speaker 2: that inner like you know, because here's the thing, It's like,
- 13:21Speaker 2: no matter how you navigate, you know, single list, especially
- 13:25Speaker 2: if you're you're dating, you know, it takes time and
- 13:27Speaker 2: energy and effort. And then you you know, you wonder,
- 13:30Speaker 2: okay am I being my true self? And and and
- 13:33Speaker 2: why am I engaging with these different women in this
- 13:35Speaker 2: different way? So on the inside there's a turmoil, there's
- 13:38Speaker 2: an unsettling in the spirit. And so for me, when
- 13:41Speaker 2: I found Maria, my spirit got selled and there was
- 13:44Speaker 2: a peace that then I can I can think, I
- 13:47Speaker 2: can work, I can create from a place of peace.
- 13:50Speaker 2: And that is It's something that is deeply hard to
- 13:54Speaker 2: even articulate, but when you find it, it's what life
- 13:58Speaker 2: is about. And the other thing I would say is
- 14:00Speaker 2: that you know, as men, you know, you know Scripture says,
- 14:04Speaker 2: you know, husbands and Efesians five, husbands, love your wives,
- 14:07Speaker 2: as Christ loved the church, and then the next command
- 14:10Speaker 2: after that is he loved the church, and then he
- 14:12Speaker 2: gave everything for the church. So the idea that we
- 14:14Speaker 2: as men, our dispositions should be to give, you know,
- 14:18Speaker 2: and and when we are with the right one, they
- 14:21Speaker 2: don't take from us, they receive from us, and then
- 14:25Speaker 2: they recitricate to us. That's how you know you're with
- 14:29Speaker 2: your right one, because there are a lot of people
- 14:30Speaker 2: you know that may want to take what you have
- 14:32Speaker 2: to give. That just means I'm not your person, right
- 14:35Speaker 2: but don't But as men, you know, for me, you know,
- 14:37Speaker 2: with Maria like it enhanced the She enhanced the giver
- 14:41Speaker 2: in me. You know, that giver was like, oh, I
- 14:44Speaker 2: mean what gud you know, just hey, that's what I'm
- 14:47Speaker 2: and that's what I'm here to do, right And in
- 14:49Speaker 2: that dynamic of husband and wife.
- 14:51Speaker 1: It's just it. For me, it has been a game changer,
- 14:55Speaker 1: you know.
- 14:55Speaker 2: And before we got together, like I wasn't necessarily looking,
- 14:58Speaker 2: you know, for marriage, I was open to of love.
- 15:00Speaker 2: And that's another thing. As men, we gotta stay.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Open to it because because that that that love, of
- 15:08Speaker 3: that deep love of self, receiving that and having that
- 15:11Speaker 3: in our life, it's what matters the most.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Man. I watched the movie and as you're talking, I
- 15:21Speaker 1: see you a lot in Ruth deep Yeah, uh huh,
- 15:27Speaker 1: I could see that. Yeah, I see I see a
- 15:31Speaker 1: lot of you in Ruth. And of course we would say, oh,
- 15:33Speaker 1: we see ourselves as bow Ass. But when you think
- 15:38Speaker 1: about not having to do anything and bow Ass just
- 15:42Speaker 1: wanting to love her for her. And before you asked it,
- 15:48Speaker 1: what what was your inspiration behind modernizing the story, Billy
- 15:54Speaker 1: Cleave to bring it?
- 15:56Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, the inspiration was just what I was
- 15:58Speaker 2: going through personally. If I was in a season of
- 16:01Speaker 2: being single and I was doing a sermon series on
- 16:04Speaker 2: what it means to be single, and I think I
- 16:06Speaker 2: was in the second and third installment of that series,
- 16:09Speaker 2: and I was studying the Book of Ruth. And as
- 16:12Speaker 2: I was studying the Book of Ruth, it was right
- 16:13Speaker 2: around the same time that I was trying to figure out, like, Okay,
- 16:17Speaker 2: what's the movie, what's the next movie I'm going to make?
- 16:20Speaker 2: And as I was studying the Book of Ruth, I
- 16:22Speaker 2: was like, wow, this, First of all, it is really
- 16:24Speaker 2: powerful because she doesn't go looking for love at all,
- 16:29Speaker 2: you know, as a matter of fact, she's kind of
- 16:31Speaker 2: resigned that love's never going to happen for her, and
- 16:33Speaker 2: she's committed to serving Naomi and to make sure that Naomi,
- 16:37Speaker 2: you know, the kind of motherlike figure in the story,
- 16:39Speaker 2: is okay. So as a reward for her service and commitment,
- 16:44Speaker 2: God blesses her with the love. And I thought, wow,
- 16:46Speaker 2: there's just so many themes here when you read it,
- 16:49Speaker 2: it's just he's like a movie. And so I said, wow, Wes,
- 16:51Speaker 2: and I just said is this guy said, ever been
- 16:53Speaker 2: a movie version of this story? And I said, there's
- 16:56Speaker 2: never been a modern one.
- 16:57Speaker 3: No.
- 16:57Speaker 2: I thought, wow, what an opportunity to do it modern
- 17:00Speaker 2: version of this story, to do it with people of color,
- 17:03Speaker 2: to deal with us, to bring it to like like
- 17:05Speaker 2: it's never been brought to light before. And as I was,
- 17:09Speaker 2: you know, working on the script with my two writers,
- 17:11Speaker 2: Corey Tynan and Mike Elliott, we just were developing it
- 17:14Speaker 2: and working on it. And the crazy part is as
- 17:17Speaker 2: we were developing it, you know, my love story with
- 17:19Speaker 2: Maria was developing, So it just was like developed. Working
- 17:22Speaker 2: on this movie was healing for me. Yeah, And I said, Okay,
- 17:25Speaker 2: I think if it's healing for me, you know, not
- 17:27Speaker 2: that I'm going to be end all be all as
- 17:29Speaker 2: a litmus test, but I feel like if this story
- 17:31Speaker 2: can move me, then it can move others. And I
- 17:33Speaker 2: think any great movie, it's always going to come from
- 17:36Speaker 2: someone involved in the creation of that film that has
- 17:39Speaker 2: a personal connection to it, absolutely, And so for this
- 17:41Speaker 2: the personal connection was you know, so often when we
- 17:44Speaker 2: go through heartbreak, or we go through heartache, or you
- 17:46Speaker 2: go through the tragedy of that Ruth's experience in the film,
- 17:49Speaker 2: you tend to say, hey, you know what, maybe God's
- 17:52Speaker 2: best is not available to me. Yeah, And so in
- 17:55Speaker 2: this movie, you know, when you see that wait, all
- 17:58Speaker 2: you have to do is stay cany your heart open,
- 18:01Speaker 2: keep following that, you know that voice of God, keep
- 18:04Speaker 2: pursuing service, and then the things that we need show up.
- 18:08Speaker 2: And if love is one of those needs, then we
- 18:10Speaker 2: can be guaranteed it will show up. So for me,
- 18:12Speaker 2: It was really healing to be able to produce this
- 18:15Speaker 2: film and bring this film to life for those reasons.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Man, And when I tell you, you did a phenomenal job,
- 18:20Speaker 1: the characters, everyone. It was beautifully shot, It was beautifully written,
- 18:25Speaker 1: I mean the acting, I mean everything. Because I took
- 18:29Speaker 1: off I was looking for my clinical lens, but then
- 18:31Speaker 1: I put on my thesbian lens and all of this.
- 18:34Speaker 1: And I'm gonna tell you what stood out to me,
- 18:36Speaker 1: what I loved about it is you showed grief in
- 18:40Speaker 1: real time. Yeah. People of color don't grieve well, and
- 18:45Speaker 1: I don't think we often realized that whether you have
- 18:49Speaker 1: lost love, you have lost a loved one, you've lost
- 18:53Speaker 1: a job, when you have to deal with grief. And
- 18:56Speaker 1: one of my favorite quotes in the movie is that
- 19:00Speaker 1: that grief comes like an unexpected storm. Yes see it,
- 19:05Speaker 1: you never see it coming. And I often have to
- 19:08Speaker 1: tell clients is that grief is also the price we
- 19:12Speaker 1: pay for lovemen. Yeah, And what I loved about bringing
- 19:17Speaker 1: that because when when when when we don't agree well,
- 19:22Speaker 1: we continue to sort of lament and load. And what
- 19:27Speaker 1: happened is you'll find yourself not really dealing with it
- 19:31Speaker 1: or sitting with it. And what I loved about it
- 19:34Speaker 1: is that even though Naomi had this difficult time of
- 19:38Speaker 1: dealing with this grief, Ruth was allowing her to really
- 19:43Speaker 1: sit in it and not run from it while she's
- 19:46Speaker 1: running from something.
- 19:49Speaker 2: In that But that's so that's so ourful, level was
- 19:52Speaker 2: the saying, because so often we don't take enough time
- 19:56Speaker 2: to acknowledge the feelings we have around whatever losses we endured.
- 20:00Speaker 1: In life, especially believers.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Absolutely, it's like, oh, you know, you know, God is
- 20:03Speaker 2: good all the time, all the time.
- 20:04Speaker 1: God is good.
- 20:05Speaker 2: That's true. Those are true statements. And and yeah, it's
- 20:10Speaker 2: okay to acknowledge, hey I just got ran over. Come
- 20:14Speaker 2: on me, bro, It's okay to just acknowledge, Hey, I'm
- 20:17Speaker 2: I'm hurting.
- 20:19Speaker 1: You know. It's like like you're not going to.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Go into the hospital and someone you know has just
- 20:23Speaker 2: gone through a horrific accident and tell them to get up.
- 20:26Speaker 2: That would be insensitive, except that would be unloved. But
- 20:29Speaker 2: that's what we do to ourselves. Yes, you know, it's like, no,
- 20:32Speaker 2: take the time, you got it. You gotta heal because
- 20:34Speaker 2: if we don't take the time to grieve, which is
- 20:37Speaker 2: part of the healing process, yes, that whatever we're not healing,
- 20:39Speaker 2: it's gonna come out in ways that will be detrimental
- 20:42Speaker 2: and potentially destriving.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Because just because you hide it doesn't mean it's not there. Yes, right,
- 20:49Speaker 1: that's right, absolutely, And I love how you know, the
- 20:54Speaker 1: film also took Naomi back to the place that she
- 20:59Speaker 1: really despise. And sometimes God will take you back to
- 21:04Speaker 1: places that you resent just to reveal who you are.
- 21:09Speaker 1: You know what I mean, man, bro when I tell you,
- 21:11Speaker 1: because I was looking at the film from so many
- 21:14Speaker 1: different lens, and you know, I've watched it three times already,
- 21:17Speaker 1: and I was looking from it from so many and
- 21:19Speaker 1: I got something every single time, because when I have
- 21:23Speaker 1: work with individuals who are going through grief counseling, man,
- 21:26Speaker 1: it's difficult because if you lost a loved one, the anger,
- 21:33Speaker 1: just the pain of them not returning. And there's a
- 21:37Speaker 1: part where she's talking about you know that not coming back.
- 21:42Speaker 1: But I think what the film is going to do
- 21:44Speaker 1: de Vaughn is that may be true. But what if
- 21:48Speaker 1: what you lost was is what was what was needed
- 21:53Speaker 1: for you to gain? And I know that's difficult to hear. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 21:59Speaker 1: it is.
- 21:59Speaker 4: It is.
- 22:00Speaker 2: And yet I think that, you know, when you're talking
- 22:03Speaker 2: about life and you're talking about loss, having that perspective
- 22:07Speaker 2: is actually a healing perspective because if I don't have
- 22:12Speaker 2: that perspective, if I don't believe the losses that I've
- 22:15Speaker 2: endured are necessary for the gains that are yet to come,
- 22:19Speaker 2: then what happens is I continue to mourn, and there
- 22:23Speaker 2: it is is look at life in the rear view
- 22:25Speaker 2: and say, oh, my goodness, if I hadn't lost whatever
- 22:28Speaker 2: that may have been, then I wouldn't be here or
- 22:31Speaker 2: then my life wouldn't be this. And don't get me wrong,
- 22:34Speaker 2: we have to acknowledge the loss. We have to grieve
- 22:37Speaker 2: the loss. Yet we also for life, have to move
- 22:40Speaker 2: on from the loss and we have to open up
- 22:42Speaker 2: our heart to whatever is yet to come. And so
- 22:45Speaker 2: what you're saying is right, But it's a very you know, sophisticated,
- 22:49Speaker 2: emotionally mature way to look at life that anything that
- 22:53Speaker 2: I had lost is actually setting me up for what
- 22:56Speaker 2: I have yet to gain, and that if I keep
- 22:59Speaker 2: that mindset, she helps me get through things. Because if
- 23:02Speaker 2: I don't have that mindset, then what's the point of living,
- 23:05Speaker 2: what's the point.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Of being here?
- 23:06Speaker 2: If I don't believe that everything I've gone through is
- 23:10Speaker 2: serves a purpose, right, yeah, for my good Yes, then
- 23:14Speaker 2: it's going.
- 23:15Speaker 1: To be very hard for me to get up in
- 23:16Speaker 1: the morning. So that perspective, I think is phenomenal. Man,
- 23:19Speaker 1: It's going to be very, very, very hard. And also,
- 23:25Speaker 1: was it your intention in the film that Boaz loss
- 23:31Speaker 1: was also acknowledged? Yes? Absolutely, you know.
- 23:35Speaker 2: I mean one when you look at you know, what
- 23:37Speaker 2: happened with his father and his parents, and then there's
- 23:39Speaker 2: a moment in the movie you know, I won't ruin it,
- 23:41Speaker 2: you know where he experiences you know, loss, and again,
- 23:45Speaker 2: like the thing about the right woman in your life,
- 23:50Speaker 2: come on, is that way you go through loss? You
- 23:54Speaker 2: have that support system. Did what did she do in
- 23:57Speaker 2: that moment?
- 23:58Speaker 1: She helped them?
- 23:59Speaker 2: Yes, And then in the moment in the aftermath, she
- 24:03Speaker 2: was the one in the midst of loss that had
- 24:05Speaker 2: an optimistic point of view to say, hey, wait a minute,
- 24:08Speaker 2: maybe all is not lost, Maybe this is actually gay.
- 24:11Speaker 1: So you need to you need to Hey, babe, I
- 24:15Speaker 1: tried this and got to watch the movie. Try go
- 24:18Speaker 1: watch the film. Yeah.
- 24:20Speaker 2: And because of her encouragement, because of her seeing his
- 24:25Speaker 2: dream and saying no, no, no, no, no, you're looking
- 24:28Speaker 2: at this wrong. Your dream is not denied, it's not deferred.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Your dream is right. Now try it and then come
- 24:35Speaker 2: to find out that what he was working on became
- 24:37Speaker 2: even better him in what looked like loss. So the
- 24:40Speaker 2: fire didn't destroy, it actually revealed and that would have
- 24:44Speaker 2: never been the case if he didn't have the right
- 24:46Speaker 2: woman in his life.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Yes, man, bro, let me take you Listen. I was
- 24:52Speaker 1: in the jail man doing cardio watching the film, and
- 24:57Speaker 1: I just felt encouraged, Like if one word that I
- 25:02Speaker 1: can say from that that just stood out, I felt encouraged.
- 25:05Speaker 1: And we were talking about it, you know, the team,
- 25:09Speaker 1: and I said, man, I really believe this film is
- 25:11Speaker 1: going to provide a lot of hope. Yeah. Uh, there's there.
- 25:16Speaker 1: There there there. There is a state of hopelessness that
- 25:20Speaker 1: I feel that a lot of individuals are in. Yep,
- 25:24Speaker 1: you know, not just from our political climate, not just
- 25:27Speaker 1: from the economic but I just think just from life.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Life is life right now, there are a lot of people.
- 25:33Speaker 1: What do you wanting individuals to take away from this film?
- 25:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I want exactly what you said, hope,
- 25:40Speaker 2: Hope in the face of loss, Hope in the face
- 25:42Speaker 2: of heartbreak, you know, hope in the.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Face of grief.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Everybody goes through challenges, everyone goes through loss, and you know,
- 25:49Speaker 2: one of the things with when we don't have hope,
- 25:51Speaker 2: what happens our heart closes and hope deferred.
- 25:55Speaker 1: That makes us the heart it right exactly.
- 25:58Speaker 2: And so for me, I want people to watch this
- 26:00Speaker 2: movie and have that hope to say, Okay, you know
- 26:03Speaker 2: what I can get through what I'm going through. I
- 26:06Speaker 2: can't open my heart to love. I can make myself
- 26:10Speaker 2: a committee of one to commit to service and participating
- 26:14Speaker 2: in the greater good of my family and my community
- 26:16Speaker 2: and my job and my workplace.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Like I can.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Those are things that I can do if it's so
- 26:20Speaker 2: often what happens also is that when we don't make
- 26:23Speaker 2: those commitments, we're like, well, love hasn't found me. And
- 26:26Speaker 2: I say, well, well, if you look for love, then
- 26:30Speaker 2: that means you're enhancing the absence of it. Mm, because wow,
- 26:34Speaker 2: think about it, you don't if you're looking for your keys.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Most time we don't look for our keys and peace, no,
- 26:40Speaker 2: no where is it.
- 26:42Speaker 3: I'll tearing up everything, tearing up everything you know, versus like,
- 26:45Speaker 3: you know what, instead of looking for love, I'm ready
- 26:47Speaker 3: to receive it, and that and that changes your whole posture.
- 26:51Speaker 1: I'm ready to receive it. So when those keys.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Show up, I trust that they're going to find me
- 26:55Speaker 2: at the right time. And until then, I'm going to
- 26:58Speaker 2: continue to live my life. I'm gonna be the love
- 27:00Speaker 2: I want to see. I'm gonna be of service, I'm
- 27:02Speaker 2: gonna have a joyful spirit, and then I'm gonna let
- 27:05Speaker 2: love come into my life when it's ready. That is
- 27:08Speaker 2: a different position in posture that I think will produce
- 27:11Speaker 2: more hope and a better life than saying I'm looking
- 27:14Speaker 2: for love and I haven't found it. So my hope
- 27:16Speaker 2: is that people will get that from the movie, Ruth
- 27:18Speaker 2: was not looking for love, Boaz was not looking for love. However,
- 27:22Speaker 2: when love showed up, they were ready to identify it,
- 27:25Speaker 2: they were ready to receive it. They were ready to
- 27:27Speaker 2: work through it in order to find the common ground
- 27:30Speaker 2: between each other.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Oh man, that's so good, brother, man, Wow, you got
- 27:34Speaker 1: you just gave me something. I won't be chelling all
- 27:37Speaker 1: the rest of the day. Man. Looking forward is also
- 27:40Speaker 1: enhancing the absence of it, exactly exactly, so I don't
- 27:44Speaker 1: I don't tell anybody. I tell nobody, don't look for love,
- 27:46Speaker 1: just be ready to receive it. Man, brothers stopped looking,
- 27:52Speaker 1: got their man DMS, let it find And I didn't
- 27:57Speaker 1: say it. That's what that's That's what my brother said.
- 27:59Speaker 1: And there's a day. Here's a nuancer.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Right, you could be in that man's DMS with the
- 28:03Speaker 2: receiving spirit and not a looking one.
- 28:06Speaker 4: Got your mindset that we have card terror moments over here,
- 28:11Speaker 4: Jesse here bro, and that is a card terror moment
- 28:14Speaker 4: right there, My friends, listen, y'all listen.
- 28:18Speaker 1: He's an expert in this moment. So y'all need to listen. Man,
- 28:24Speaker 1: when you well, the actors, yes, Bro, Gosh Man Tyler
- 28:31Speaker 1: phenomenal man, Yes, I mean just phenomenal, uh surreal, Yes,
- 28:38Speaker 1: phenomenis And of course Felicia Rashad, I mean childhood legend,
- 28:43Speaker 1: you know, I mean just I mean everyone, man, how
- 28:47Speaker 1: was it you know and what was the what space
- 28:52Speaker 1: were you in when you were choosing how to fit
- 28:55Speaker 1: into the character?
- 28:57Speaker 3: You know?
- 28:58Speaker 2: For me, you know, I got my start, you know,
- 29:00Speaker 2: working as an intern for Will Smith and then I
- 29:02Speaker 2: was an executive at Sony Pictures for almost ten years
- 29:06Speaker 2: and work with him on everything from Suit Happening at
- 29:08Speaker 2: seven Pounds, Hancock After Earth, the Karate Kid Remade. And
- 29:12Speaker 2: so what I learned from him is, you know, always
- 29:16Speaker 2: commit to the process that goes for life. But also
- 29:19Speaker 2: in terms of filmmaking, commit to the process because sometimes
- 29:24Speaker 2: we want a film to be a certain thing, but
- 29:26Speaker 2: the process has taken us a different direction. So when
- 29:29Speaker 2: it comes to casting, I applied that, Okay, I'm committing
- 29:32Speaker 2: to the process that I don't know who the right Boaz,
- 29:35Speaker 2: Ruth and Naomi should be. I don't know, So let
- 29:38Speaker 2: me commit to the process of casting with our casting
- 29:40Speaker 2: director Lee Daniels Butler, our director of the film, Alana Brown.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Let's all you know, Tyler Perry was, you know, my
- 29:47Speaker 2: producing partner on it. Let's all you know, come together
- 29:49Speaker 2: and commit to a process that will reveal who was
- 29:53Speaker 2: supposed to play these parts. So we started with a
- 29:56Speaker 2: you know, casting search for Ruth and Boaz. You know,
- 29:58Speaker 2: we read audit probably hundreds of guys, hundreds of women.
- 30:03Speaker 2: And I had made a show with Sorea called Kingdom
- 30:06Speaker 2: Business for BT and I noticed that Sorea had not
- 30:10Speaker 2: come in yet for the audition, and I remember reaching
- 30:13Speaker 2: out to her. I'm like Hey, look you got it.
- 30:15Speaker 2: I want you to come in for this.
- 30:16Speaker 1: I think this could be great.
- 30:18Speaker 2: And I learned that she had some hesitancy because she
- 30:20Speaker 2: just has always played like for an empire. And even
- 30:24Speaker 2: in our show Kingdom Business that I did with VT,
- 30:26Speaker 2: she plays a singer, and so she didn't want to
- 30:29Speaker 2: sing on film again, and I just said, I know,
- 30:31Speaker 2: but you trust me on this one. So she came
- 30:33Speaker 2: in and she auditioned and I was like, okay, see
- 30:37Speaker 2: everybody agreed, that looks like Ruth to me. So then
- 30:40Speaker 2: we were doing some chemistry reads with a few other
- 30:42Speaker 2: actors for the Boaz part with Sorea, and at the
- 30:46Speaker 2: eleventh hour, Tyler Leplie sent in a self table audition
- 30:50Speaker 2: and we all watched it and said, that looks a
- 30:52Speaker 2: little bit like Boaz to me. Then we did a
- 30:55Speaker 2: chemistry read with the two of them and it was
- 30:57Speaker 2: it was clear, Yeah, they were Ruth in Boaz Man.
- 31:00Speaker 2: That process got us to.
- 31:02Speaker 1: You know, the result.
- 31:03Speaker 2: And then with Naomi, when we were trying to figure
- 31:05Speaker 2: out who would play that, it was like, wait a minute,
- 31:08Speaker 2: you know, Felicia Rashad is you know she is she
- 31:11Speaker 2: represents that she's quintesdential Naomi. Yeah, and so we sent
- 31:14Speaker 2: her the script and she read it and she said,
- 31:17Speaker 2: I'm in. You know, we did her deal and that
- 31:19Speaker 2: was it. So it was just really committing to the
- 31:21Speaker 2: process and really seeing and that these were the ones
- 31:24Speaker 2: that were rising to the surface and they were just
- 31:27Speaker 2: perfect for the parks.
- 31:28Speaker 1: And what I loved about it is that the individuals
- 31:33Speaker 1: that you picked. Man. As I was watching the film, bro,
- 31:36Speaker 1: it was like reading the Bible. Wow. Indeed, it was
- 31:41Speaker 1: like that, you know, I mean, you know Tyler, I
- 31:43Speaker 1: mean because you you would you know, his stature, like
- 31:46Speaker 1: you would kind of envision this is what a boass
- 31:49Speaker 1: looked like working in the field. And yes, and and Srea,
- 31:53Speaker 1: I mean it, Bro, it was just and then too,
- 31:56Speaker 1: you know, Felicia Vishad is just amazing. Man, the emotion
- 31:59Speaker 1: that she or you know, when you're dealing with loss
- 32:03Speaker 1: and I'm looking at all it, I'm just like, man,
- 32:04Speaker 1: this is I'm like, man, this and I'm watching the
- 32:08Speaker 1: film and I'm gonna say this, Brothers, I cried, listen.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Oh you got me, brother, you got it, You've gotten Listen, Listen.
- 32:18Speaker 1: I just put on a helmet for a living and
- 32:21Speaker 1: you know, and would dare not cry? You know you
- 32:24Speaker 1: may have cried with you lost, but you better not say. Man,
- 32:27Speaker 1: I was watching this move you know, brother Lati in
- 32:29Speaker 1: my man, Bro, I watched it and I just couldn't
- 32:35Speaker 1: help but think about what the story represented from the
- 32:41Speaker 1: biblical terms into what is representing from a cinematic view. Redemption.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Yeah right, you know what I mean? Redemption, dude, And
- 32:52Speaker 1: you think about right that boas and rules were connected
- 32:57Speaker 1: to Jesus lineage. Yeah, I know, he's you know it's
- 33:02Speaker 1: and man, bro, let's I'll tell you when I've watched this,
- 33:07Speaker 1: the similism with the why I see, I think my
- 33:13Speaker 1: brain is so so layered, man, the symbolic and people
- 33:18Speaker 1: if they watch that and just really watch it, because
- 33:21Speaker 1: you got to watch it and really watch it closely. Man,
- 33:24Speaker 1: Just so many messages in that man. You guys man,
- 33:27Speaker 1: phenomenal job. Brother, Like, phenomenal job. Man like love it.
- 33:32Speaker 1: I'm I'm happy you made that film because I think
- 33:36Speaker 1: devon oftentimes when we're reading a Bible, people don't see
- 33:41Speaker 1: themselves in the characters. You're right, and you made us
- 33:47Speaker 1: see ourselves in these characters. Wow. Man, I'm hoping that
- 33:52Speaker 1: you take more stories from the Bible and modernize it
- 33:56Speaker 1: because sometimes, Man, the films become the Bible that we read.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Absolutely one thousand percent.
- 34:05Speaker 2: I mean there are some people that will never open
- 34:07Speaker 2: the Bible, that will never go into to church, but
- 34:09Speaker 2: they will turn on Netflix. You know, Netflix has over
- 34:13Speaker 2: three hundred million subscribers. Netflix is in over one hundred
- 34:16Speaker 2: and ninety countries, and so to be able to take
- 34:19Speaker 2: a movie like this, with a message like this and
- 34:22Speaker 2: put it on the world's most powerful streaming service, the
- 34:25Speaker 2: impact is that we can't even begin to quantify. So
- 34:28Speaker 2: you are one thousand percent correct.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Man. I hope you feel proud brother, as a black
- 34:33Speaker 1: man to another black man. I'm proud of you, brother,
- 34:35Speaker 1: and I just couldn't be more happy man for the
- 34:39Speaker 1: product that you guys put out. Man. And it couldn't
- 34:42Speaker 1: be at a better timing. Yeah, we need it, man,
- 34:46Speaker 1: We need all man. We needed that, man, and when
- 34:49Speaker 1: we needed a film that speaks to us, you know
- 34:53Speaker 1: what I mean. And that's what you did. Hey, that's
- 34:56Speaker 1: what you did, man, And I hope you feel proud.
- 34:58Speaker 1: I do I do that responsiblities Man's listening elephant. We
- 35:02Speaker 1: didn't know is this going to work. Are people going
- 35:04Speaker 1: to connect to it?
- 35:05Speaker 2: So everything you're saying, man, it's just it makes me
- 35:07Speaker 2: feel proud that it's actually working.
- 35:09Speaker 1: And when you think about the film over on and
- 35:12Speaker 1: you think about the messaging and you think about where
- 35:16Speaker 1: you were personally, did it heal you? Oh?
- 35:21Speaker 2: Man, absolutely, I mean, you know, without a doubt it
- 35:24Speaker 2: was a part of the healing processes. And part of
- 35:27Speaker 2: that healing process is that you know, when you go
- 35:30Speaker 2: through things and you're trying to reveild your life, Man, yes,
- 35:34Speaker 2: the fear is there.
- 35:36Speaker 1: You know, will I ever be able to rebuild? You know,
- 35:40Speaker 1: will will what would it look like?
- 35:42Speaker 2: And because we don't know right, a lot of times
- 35:44Speaker 2: in the rebuild, you may not be able to see
- 35:46Speaker 2: the picture. And in the absence of knowing what it's
- 35:48Speaker 2: going to look like, there's a lot of fear. There's frustration,
- 35:51Speaker 2: there's anxiety. So for me, you know, even professionally, you know,
- 35:55Speaker 2: going through you know what I had to navigate in
- 35:57Speaker 2: the season before I started making Ruth and Boaz, you know,
- 36:00Speaker 2: I was I was afraid. You know, am I Am
- 36:03Speaker 2: I really going to have a career that's going to continue?
- 36:05Speaker 2: Am I still going to be able to build you know,
- 36:08Speaker 2: what I thought I was building, you know, until things
- 36:12Speaker 2: you know changed in my life. So as Ruth and
- 36:14Speaker 2: bow as the development, you know, process happened, and I mean,
- 36:17Speaker 2: you know, I just came up with this idea March
- 36:19Speaker 2: of last year. We we started prepping August of last year.
- 36:23Speaker 2: We finished the movie in October of last year, and
- 36:26Speaker 2: now the movie's out. So to be able to go
- 36:28Speaker 2: from you know, an idea to execution in less than
- 36:32Speaker 2: a year is something that you know is not done.
- 36:34Speaker 2: But the way that it was able to happen was
- 36:38Speaker 2: for me to acknowledge, here's the pain I'm in, here's
- 36:41Speaker 2: how I'm feeling. Yet I'm still going to access to faith.
- 36:44Speaker 2: I'm still going to have faith that this can happen.
- 36:46Speaker 2: I'm still going to have faith that, you know, this
- 36:48Speaker 2: is a good idea. I'm going to have faith that
- 36:50Speaker 2: we can get this done in record time. I'm going
- 36:52Speaker 2: to have faith that the right actor is going to
- 36:53Speaker 2: show up. I mean have faith that the right director
- 36:55Speaker 2: is going to show up. I'm gonna have faith this
- 36:56Speaker 2: movie's gonna work. And so when we're rebuilding the essence
- 37:01Speaker 2: of what we need to rebuild our life is faith
- 37:05Speaker 2: and faith isn't just an intellectual construct. It actually shows
- 37:07Speaker 2: up in our actions. And that's why it says faith
- 37:09Speaker 2: that works is dead, but faith with works is alive.
- 37:12Speaker 2: So if we continue to have faith, you know what,
- 37:15Speaker 2: I might be hurting today, but I'm still going to
- 37:17Speaker 2: go to therapy. I might be hurting today, but I'm
- 37:20Speaker 2: still going to you know, apply for the job. Might
- 37:22Speaker 2: be hurting today, but I'm still going to commit to
- 37:24Speaker 2: the process of rebuilding. So for me, making those commitments
- 37:28Speaker 2: before anything was rebuilt, before there was even any redemption
- 37:32Speaker 2: on the horizon, making those decisions by faith and then
- 37:36Speaker 2: moving in faith really was a big part of my
- 37:39Speaker 2: healing process. So when you see this felled for me,
- 37:42Speaker 2: you know I watched it. You know I watched multiple
- 37:45Speaker 2: times that even though I made the film, even though
- 37:48Speaker 2: I produced the film, I'm still getting emotional about it.
- 37:50Speaker 2: If I know what this means. Yes, you know that
- 37:53Speaker 2: God has not forgotten about us. God sees us right
- 37:56Speaker 2: where we are when we are, and this process of
- 38:00Speaker 2: finding the right purpose, the right love at the right time,
- 38:04Speaker 2: that to me. You know, I watched the film and
- 38:06Speaker 2: I just get emotional because I know what I was
- 38:09Speaker 2: going through and to be in this moment and to
- 38:12Speaker 2: be able to say, you know, I'm experiencing redemption. I'm
- 38:16Speaker 2: experiencing you know, the rebuild in the most beautiful, powerful way.
- 38:23Speaker 2: It just lets me know that not God is real,
- 38:26Speaker 2: Love winds and Heath.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Works, man, man, oh Man, say that again.
- 38:29Speaker 2: God is real, Love winds and faith works.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Man. And from all that, you said, what I heard
- 38:39Speaker 1: is when I first met you produced by Faith.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Amen, And that was divine was that was the first
- 38:44Speaker 1: first book. Yeah, first book produced by Faith. Listen, go
- 38:47Speaker 1: get that book because I mean you embody that and
- 38:52Speaker 1: just to see that that is still your foundation, you know,
- 38:56Speaker 1: produced by Faith. When you are looking for the right actors,
- 38:59Speaker 1: you're looking for the right producers and the right team,
- 39:03Speaker 1: it's produced by Faith.
- 39:04Speaker 3: Man.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think you know what people are going
- 39:07Speaker 1: to give from this episode. Man, It's going to be
- 39:10Speaker 1: so life enriching for them. Man, to enrich their life,
- 39:15Speaker 1: to give them the hope, to give them the inspiration,
- 39:19Speaker 1: but then the belief that they need to move forward
- 39:23Speaker 1: and whatever wherever they are in that journey, you know,
- 39:26Speaker 1: whether it's therapy, whether it's navigating the breakup, whether it's
- 39:29Speaker 1: navigating grief, a loss of a loved one, the loss
- 39:32Speaker 1: of a career. I just think, man, this film Beyond
- 39:36Speaker 1: Relationally is going to be able to speak to so
- 39:39Speaker 1: many people where they are in life, because sometimes loss
- 39:44Speaker 1: can really make you feel like, well, maybe I'm not fit.
- 39:48Speaker 2: Right, But what's so important what you just said is
- 39:53Speaker 2: so correct in that go through loss and then the narrative,
- 39:58Speaker 2: internal narrative, maybe I'm not fit. That's the area that
- 40:03Speaker 2: needs to be rewritten. Yes, right, because as we believe
- 40:06Speaker 2: I'm not fit, I'm not worthy. I'm not going to
- 40:09Speaker 2: try again. Then what happens is going back to what
- 40:13Speaker 2: we were talking about earlier, is like, then your losses
- 40:16Speaker 2: went yeah, because you give them more more focused than
- 40:21Speaker 2: you give your future. So it's like, Okay, i might
- 40:24Speaker 2: be hurty today, but I'm not going to let myself
- 40:26Speaker 2: believe that I'm not fit for love. I am healing
- 40:30Speaker 2: from what I went through, but I am going to
- 40:32Speaker 2: stay open to love. I am lovable. I can't wait
- 40:36Speaker 2: to love again. Like God, to rewrite man, all that
- 40:40Speaker 2: inner talk in order for the story to come out
- 40:44Speaker 2: the way you need it in your life.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Man, Listen, I hope you have taken something from this
- 40:53Speaker 1: conversation you've heard Devun talk about. As he just said,
- 40:57Speaker 1: we have to change our inner dialogue. What are you
- 41:00Speaker 1: saying to yourself personally? Again, y'all know here, I love
- 41:05Speaker 1: to be transparent personally As someone who's experienced loss in
- 41:09Speaker 1: a child, someone who's had to navigate the grief of that,
- 41:13Speaker 1: I often have said, well, maybe I'm not fit to
- 41:15Speaker 1: be a father, and not because I don't think that
- 41:19Speaker 1: I have the ability, but because loss had me thinking
- 41:23Speaker 1: that and maybe it's not for me. And what Devon
- 41:27Speaker 1: is saying, it's not that it's not for you, and
- 41:30Speaker 1: it's not that you need a different outcome. Maybe we
- 41:32Speaker 1: need a different outlook. There is Man's Joe. That's man,
- 41:37Speaker 1: and that's what we need. So and so I won't
- 41:40Speaker 1: encourage you go watch Ruth and bow Ass if you
- 41:44Speaker 1: have Netflix, and I know y'all had it because y'all
- 41:46Speaker 1: watched the fight last weekend. So please go out and
- 41:50Speaker 1: support this film. This is an amazing film. Let's blow
- 41:54Speaker 1: the screaming numbers up. Let's support our brother, let's support
- 41:57Speaker 1: our friend, and let this story. And what I love
- 42:02Speaker 1: what you did is you took a biblical story and
- 42:06Speaker 1: you made it for us, and when I say us,
- 42:09Speaker 1: I'm not just talking to just us people of colors.
- 42:11Speaker 1: But he made this film for people who are looking
- 42:14Speaker 1: to be restored, because it's a story that you can
- 42:17Speaker 1: find restoration and you can be you know, redeemed, you know,
- 42:21Speaker 1: And that's what I love about. I've always been a
- 42:23Speaker 1: fan of your work because I've always admired your ability
- 42:28Speaker 1: to balance all the many different things, you know, you
- 42:32Speaker 1: and Tyler and Bishop Jason, especially being able to navigate
- 42:37Speaker 1: faith based and being able to work in the marketplace
- 42:40Speaker 1: and all those different things. Because when I you know,
- 42:42Speaker 1: being a sun of the past, the first thing I said, Brother,
- 42:44Speaker 1: I don't want to be in a poor pit, right,
- 42:46Speaker 1: but what you did is made what you do in
- 42:48Speaker 1: a fimbroom your poor pit there is because you're gonna
- 42:51Speaker 1: have to be behind Napoleon to preach. You're preaching through storytelling.
- 42:57Speaker 2: And it's a blessing to be able to want to
- 43:00Speaker 2: have the opportunity. But you know too, to have made
- 43:03Speaker 2: that commitment, you know. I mean, yes, we're here, right,
- 43:06Speaker 2: but you know, I started this journey around I was
- 43:07Speaker 2: eighteen years old.
- 43:08Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what it's been. So it's been a
- 43:10Speaker 1: long time.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Of just showing up, learning the craft how to tell
- 43:13Speaker 2: stories so that when I'm telling a story, when I'm
- 43:16Speaker 2: delivering a message, you know, in the form of a film,
- 43:20Speaker 2: right that, Yes, that is, you know there is. That's
- 43:23Speaker 2: like one of the biggest pulpits in Lias. Yes, yet
- 43:25Speaker 2: it's still when anybody watches it, they can get the message,
- 43:28Speaker 2: but they also can enjoy the movie.
- 43:30Speaker 1: You know.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Sometimes it's like if the movie is about a message,
- 43:33Speaker 2: it doesn't resonate because people are connected to the story.
- 43:36Speaker 2: So it's like, well, message is going to work if
- 43:39Speaker 2: it's connected to a story that's well developed in it.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Yes, you know, man, beautifully, beautifully, beautifully done. Brother. As
- 43:46Speaker 1: we close out, I always ask every guest one question,
- 43:50Speaker 1: and that question is what is healing for you?
- 43:54Speaker 2: You know, healing for me is first acknowledging the herd.
- 43:58Speaker 2: It's good, right because you know, it's like how can you?
- 44:02Speaker 1: How can I?
- 44:02Speaker 2: How can we heal from something that we don't acknowledge?
- 44:06Speaker 2: So healing is like, Okay, I'm gonna acknowledge the herd,
- 44:10Speaker 2: and then I am going to by fail believe that
- 44:15Speaker 2: what's hurting me today one day will not hurt me tomorrow.
- 44:21Speaker 2: And I will do the work required for that statement
- 44:25Speaker 2: to become a reality. And that work may be therapy
- 44:28Speaker 2: and maybe writing, and maybe journally. It may be you know,
- 44:32Speaker 2: going to church, praying, reading the word. I mean, there's
- 44:36Speaker 2: so many things that you know, I personally have used
- 44:39Speaker 2: in my healing journey, but it starts with that. That's
- 44:42Speaker 2: what healing is to me. Healing fundamentally is being whole.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Doesn't mean you don't have scars.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Yeah I got scars.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Yeah, but I can look at the scar and say, wow,
- 44:51Speaker 2: that's no longer a wont.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Mm hmm, there's no longer a won't listen. He's a
- 44:59Speaker 1: preacher to y'all, So I mean, the brother is multi factors.
- 45:02Speaker 1: So so y'all look at it like, so don't don't
- 45:05Speaker 1: don't be alarmed that he's dropping these gyms, the brothers annoying. Man,
- 45:09Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you, thank you many appreciate This was
- 45:13Speaker 1: amazing man. You just helped me man on so many levels. Man,
- 45:16Speaker 1: thank you, and thank you for sharing space with the
- 45:19Speaker 1: Just Hill audience. Man, they love these conversations, and I
- 45:23Speaker 1: think more importantly, they're gonna love the body of work
- 45:26Speaker 1: that you just produced and the message behind it. Man,
- 45:29Speaker 1: so thank you brother. You listen, you have just heard
- 45:33Speaker 1: the amazing the Von Franklin film, producer of Ruth and
- 45:37Speaker 1: bow Ass. Please go out and support this film. It's
- 45:40Speaker 1: on Netflix September twenty six. September twenty six is also
- 45:44Speaker 1: my father's birthday, so so yeah, so I'm excited to
- 45:49Speaker 1: see this film and will tell my pops because he
- 45:51Speaker 1: don't watch TV, but he does watch Netflix. They all
- 45:56Speaker 1: go celebrated. Bring up yeah, oh oh yeah, tell me
- 46:00Speaker 1: watch this film. Contigue your healing journey. Continue building community
- 46:04Speaker 1: because without community, it is challenging to heal, and you
