Latest / Bullied Nostalgia / Bullied Nostalgia: 50th Episode Celebration with Saturday Morning Cartoons
Transcript
- 0:00So many of our favors to watch. Well, look, now they're being.
- 0:05Bashed. I guess that's what we should
- 0:09expect. On the Bullied Nostalgia
- 0:12Podcast, Hello to everyone on the Internet.
- 0:19This is the Bullied Nostalgia Podcast, the podcast no one has
- 0:22ever heard of that somehow hit 50 episodes.
- 0:27That's right. Today's episode, we are going to
- 0:30be talking about some cartoons we watch together, but we'll
- 0:35also be talking about the podcast as a whole and looking
- 0:38back a little bit on the experience that we've had over
- 0:42the last four years. As mentioned, we wanted to do
- 0:46something different to celebrate this milestone, so we bought
- 0:50several hours of Saturday morning cartoons on VHS and
- 0:54watched them together. But who is we and what is the
- 0:59Bullied Nostalgia Podcast? Well, if you're asking those
- 1:03questions, I don't know how you found this episode, but welcome.
- 1:07I'm Timothy Nesbitt and I'm joined by my brother Jonathan.
- 1:12Looking great at 50. Looking great at 50 and my two
- 1:16kids. Chance.
- 1:18That's me. And Kai.
- 1:21Hi. Gross and together we rewatch
- 1:26old movies and TV shows from our youth and see if they hold up as
- 1:30adults. 50 episodes you guys, that is wild.
- 1:37It's like more episodes than Stranger Things.
- 1:41No. Why are people not talking about
- 1:44us like they're talking about Stranger Things?
- 1:47Do you think people have conspiracy theories about our
- 1:50podcast? Isn't the 50th episode and we're
- 1:53lying to you? So statistically half of all
- 1:58podcasts don't make it to their third episode.
- 2:03So. This is what they would call sad
- 2:08we haven't gained. One new listener since 25 but
- 2:11we're still going. 90% of all podcasts quit before they
- 2:20reached their 50th episode, so we are a rare breed.
- 2:26We fall into less than 10% of podcasts that are still going at
- 2:3250 episodes. What do you guys think sets us
- 2:35apart? Foolishness.
- 2:38Amateurish capabilities. The T-shirts that we won't stop
- 2:43making. All right, you Downers.
- 2:46I think it's because we enjoy each other so much.
- 2:50We're having so much fun. And our fearless leader Tim
- 2:53keeps us going. He.
- 2:54Keeps dragging us back. For another episode, I don't
- 3:00feel dragged. I delightfully prance into the
- 3:03next episode. That might also be because a lot
- 3:06of this is my. Yeah.
- 3:09Dancing kind of have to keep suffering.
- 3:12I don't know what I'll do if I have to watch one more Land
- 3:14Before Time movie. I have to watch them by myself.
- 3:17It's bad, you guys. Look, if I appear on the news,
- 3:20it's not my fault. It's John's fault.
- 3:23If you end up on the news. Yeah, for whatever happens after
- 3:26I watch the next Land Before Time movie.
- 3:28What would that have to be to be on the news?
- 3:31I don't know. Really big.
- 3:33Pomegranate. OK, context you guys.
- 3:44So we were playing a board game over Christmas.
- 3:47I won't go into detail on what the game is, but essentially you
- 3:52have to get people to guess how likely something is.
- 3:57And so the whole point of the question was that something had
- 4:01to end up on the news. And John's answer was a
- 4:05pomegranate the size of a basketball, it was supposed.
- 4:11To be 80% likely. No, I don't think that'd be an
- 4:168. You were up at the top, John.
- 4:18It was. Yeah, you put it, man.
- 4:20You can't back out now. Well.
- 4:23That wouldn't make international news, but that would be front
- 4:26page on. That is true.
- 4:29OK, yes, nostalgia definitely hits different after 50.
- 4:34We have a few episodes left in this season, but if anyone wants
- 4:39to give us feedback or ideas that will affect the future of
- 4:43this podcast or even just let us know where you're at, you can
- 4:47send an e-mail to bulliedpod@gmail.com.
- 4:51We also have a merch store that you can find by searching
- 4:53Bulliedpod on redbubble.com and I recently added a mug that Kai
- 5:01requested that says World's Best Mug.
- 5:06I want that mug. You're searching it right now.
- 5:09Do you drink things out of mugs, Kai?
- 5:12Nope, I genuinely couldn't tell you the last time I did.
- 5:15He's been saving himself for the world's best one.
- 5:18Yeah. Tim whenever I go into red
- 5:20bubble and type bullied nostalgia, it gives me T-shirts
- 5:24with rustic steam engine trains. Just write bullied pod one word.
- 5:30OK, well if you put bullied space nostalgia, you get these
- 5:34rustic trained T-shirts. I'm curious.
- 5:37I'm looking this up. Oh, my goodness, Kai, you work
- 5:41my time aggressively. Yeah, we can hear your
- 5:43keystrokes. Kai.
- 5:46John, I look you up. Yeah.
- 5:47There's six bullied nostalgia shirts and then one steam engine
- 5:53and then. There's 4 steam engine shirts.
- 5:57Tim, do you have like a steam engine side hustling?
- 6:01Well, I'm not going to tell you about it on this episode, that's
- 6:04for sure. Wait for the Thomas the Train
- 6:07Engine episode. Oh my goodness, Thomas the Train
- 6:11would be such a boring episode. Oh, I think we have to do it.
- 6:16That shows the worst. Grandma used to record that for
- 6:21us, right? I know she just, it's kind of
- 6:23British, isn't? Yeah, bless her heart.
- 6:25She was like, oh, they'll like this.
- 6:27And it's like, no. I'm laughing thinking about
- 6:32making fun of that. John, did you see Bullet Train?
- 6:36No, no I didn't. Chance loves that movie and
- 6:42there is a lot of Thomas references in that movie.
- 6:46It's a good one. I do love that movie.
- 6:48I watched it just recently again actually.
- 6:51So last year in one of our episodes when I got Spotify
- 6:57Wrapped, I mentioned that it felt like our podcast growth had
- 7:02stalled, but the stats said otherwise.
- 7:05Well, it's that time of the year that Spotify Wrapped is out
- 7:09again, and it has a lot to say. Once again, these are just
- 7:13Spotify statistics. This does not reflect how we're
- 7:17doing on iheart or on Apple or any of the other dozen places
- 7:24where a podcast can be found. But some fun statistics are in
- 7:29the year 2025, we've had a 58% increase in audience.
- 7:36We've had a 999% increase in new audience, a 22% increase in
- 7:45followers and a 42% increase in listening time from the previous
- 7:52year. That's a lot of positive
- 7:55metrics. 2 positive. Hi.
- 7:58Why are you going to be doubting?
- 7:59What was that? What was that?
- 8:03Hi, why are you going to be doubting?
- 8:06Sometimes the mouth and the brain.
- 8:12Someone calling him Sean. Why?
- 8:17You got to be having a stroke. The top countries that listen to
- 8:23our podcast #1 is Canada #2 is the US of a #3 is the UK #4 is
- 8:34Ukraine and #5 is Spain. Fans listen to our podcast 78%
- 8:43longer than other podcasts. Is that 'cause we make longer
- 8:47podcasts? No.
- 8:51I. Infected you because I haven't
- 8:55downloaded any other podcasts on mom's phone.
- 8:59Can you imagine? Mom is listening?
- 9:01That's funny. Nana, do you like our podcast?
- 9:05So some other fun just statistics stuff is that.
- 9:10Struggling to talk today. We had a poll up that let people
- 9:17vote for their favorite episode of our podcast.
- 9:20It was a head to head format so essentially 2 episodes would pop
- 9:24up and you'd pick your favorite between the two.
- 9:27Keep in mind the newest episodes were not included in the poll.
- 9:32We had a total of 2967 votes cast.
- 9:38Wow, how many votes was per person?
- 9:40I remember doing a lot of votes. There were fifty in a run.
- 9:45OK, so divide that number by 50 chance.
- 9:49Kai really wants to get down to the brass tacks, are you?
- 9:52Here. What are you doing over there?
- 9:55I don't know you. Said we're Nana.
- 9:57Do you like our podcast and then what's happening with you?
- 10:01What did your keyboard sound like again?
- 10:08So. I have mic monitoring on all the
- 10:12time but I can't have it on right now because it cuts off my
- 10:15yelling. Yelling is very important for
- 10:18your audio. It is.
- 10:20So Tim, I want to hear about this face off and now land
- 10:23before time was #1. OK, I'm just gonna read out the
- 10:28top ones in order of favorite episodes.
- 10:33In first place, we have 3 ninjas.
- 10:36Nice. In second place, Double Dragon.
- 10:40Eric is at the top. That's true.
- 10:43In 3rd place descendants in fourth place land before time
- 10:4850. Yeah, in 5th place, Descendants
- 10:542. In 6th place, The Nutcracker
- 10:57Prince. Interesting.
- 11:00In 7th place Dougal. Wrong.
- 11:04Wrong that. Episode was really fun to.
- 11:08Me, yeah, it just. Wasn't fun to watch.
- 11:10The movie sucks, but it's a good episode.
- 11:13In 8th place, Quest for Camelot. In 9th place, Ninja Turtles 2,
- 11:20The Secret of the Use, which reaffirms that people like me
- 11:24saying please please, a moment to reflect.
- 11:28They would if you ever said that you had a phone recording
- 11:32directly into the mic. And in 10th place, Spaceballs.
- 11:38And I've noticed a little bit of a pattern.
- 11:40All of our talk episodes are either really funny guests or
- 11:46bullying chants specifically. Well, we bullied John in
- 11:50Nutcracker. That's fair.
- 11:52I find it hard to believe that only one land before a Time
- 11:56movie made it in the top 20. Nope.
- 12:03Something that I did find interesting about this rating.
- 12:07If you look at the top ten, season one has three episodes
- 12:12represented. Season 2 has three episodes
- 12:16represented. Season 3 has three episodes
- 12:20represented. Season 4, at the time of this
- 12:23poll, only had one episode represented.
- 12:26But that seems to imply that there's a consistent level of
- 12:31quality season to season, which I think is a really cool
- 12:36realization. Or we can never break our
- 12:38barrier of only having three good episodes.
- 12:40That's right, only three good ones per season.
- 12:43Where the heck was Ernest scared?
- 12:48Like clearly I needed to do. This.
- 12:50Quiz. Multiple times it's true, our
- 12:53listeners got it wrong. What is Ernest?
- 12:57Not. The top 20.
- 13:00Not like was it season 4? No, it was season 3 and John is
- 13:04the only one who loved that episode.
- 13:06Don't let him rewrite history, hey?
- 13:08Wasn't it? It had like the milk, no?
- 13:11Not a really good episode. I'll have to trust your word for
- 13:16it because I honestly don't. Remember chances like half
- 13:18asleep and not putting up with this BS.
- 13:23Something else that I thought would be fun to look back at is
- 13:27to see which of the movies and TV shows that we have looked at
- 13:32on our podcast have been the highest rated and lowest rated
- 13:38movies in the world. So using Rotten Tomatoes scores,
- 13:43I've pulled a list of the worst rated movies that we've done on
- 13:48this podcast, keeping in mind that a lot of the things that
- 13:52we've done on the podcast do not have Rotten Tomatoes scores.
- 13:56For instance, the majority of the Land Before Time sequels are
- 13:59not on Rotten Tomatoes. So the fifth worst rated movie
- 14:05that we have done on Rotten Tomatoes is Ace Ventura 2 which
- 14:09has a 23%. Number 4 is Superman 4 with 16%.
- 14:17Does anyone want to venture a guess at what the first three
- 14:20spots are for worst movies that we've done on this podcast?
- 14:25Doogle Listen on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 14:28Google's definitely up there. Doogle is number 2 with 9%.
- 14:34Google is a cult following for being so terrible.
- 14:37That's right. No, it's on.
- 14:39There, I'm actually going to fill in the gap in between.
- 14:41I'm going to tell you guys, number 3 is Double Dragon with
- 14:4512%. What do you guys think is the
- 14:48worst movie that we have done on this podcast with 7% on Rotten
- 14:54Tomatoes has to? Appeal to nobody.
- 14:59I think one time too is in the selection people thought.
- 15:02They were going to be good. You fools, it's Christmas in
- 15:06Wonderland, am I right? Well, it could be the.
- 15:09Answer is spy hard. Yeah, I see that.
- 15:15What? That's a classic.
- 15:19It's so funny hearing that. It's my hard knowing that movie
- 15:22just got a sequel. Well, it didn't.
- 15:24The new movie was the Naked Gun sequels, which Spy Hard was
- 15:29trying to cash in on. John, how do you feel about
- 15:33mobilizing your bots and all your loved ones to force that
- 15:38episode onto our podcast now knowing it is worse than Dougal
- 15:43on Rotten Tomatoes? I forgot that that was the one
- 15:47we voted for. I just figured we all wanted to
- 15:49watch. All wanted it so bad.
- 15:51Watch Speed Razor, I like that movie.
- 15:55We voted for. You meant you voted for.
- 15:58He meant we as in him and the. Conglomerate of bots who share
- 16:03his consciousness. I was told I was allowed to vote
- 16:06once. I voted once.
- 16:07I borrowed my dad's phone and voted once with his.
- 16:12I borrowed my wife's phone and voted once with hers.
- 16:16Anyone who would have voted for Spy Heart, it's so consensually
- 16:21with their own knowledge of it. Once again a reminder, John, 7%
- 16:26of people on Earth like that movie.
- 16:29No 7% of 2020 critics detached from what real humans want?
- 16:35Sure, sure. Can you check the audience
- 16:38score? Look it up, you got the
- 16:40keyboard, it's your job now I'm looking.
- 16:43It up and bounce it to the. World, it's 31%.
- 16:53That is correct. Wow that's shocking.
- 16:56How many bots did you use for that?
- 16:59Yeah. OK, so these are less fun than
- 17:04the worst episodes, but looking at the five best reviewed movies
- 17:09that we've done on this podcast coming in #5 with an 80% is
- 17:16goldeneye #4 with 88 percent is Spaceballs.
- 17:24Does anyone want to venture a guess at what the top three best
- 17:29reviewed movies are that we've done on this podcast?
- 17:32Humanji up there. Nope.
- 17:34No, Jumanji was like a 50 we talked about it on.
- 17:36There it was like a 60 some. Right.
- 17:39I feel like I remember witches being rated pretty high.
- 17:43That is correct. Witches is the number one
- 17:46highest reviewed film we have done on this podcast with a 94%.
- 17:51That feels really good. I know Dad's getting ready to
- 17:54the joke, so I'm just going to say is one of them descendants?
- 17:57Descendants is #3 at 90%. I knew it would be.
- 18:02And John's over there laughing. But follow that bird is number 2
- 18:07at 92%. Oh, that's not right.
- 18:11Laughing anymore? It's.
- 18:14A good movie. I did want to share the top
- 18:16reviewed 5 because they are less fun than the worst reviewed, but
- 18:20I knew it was an opportunity to grief both of you which I had to
- 18:24take. I'm happy.
- 18:26So which is weird in this podcast.
- 18:29Yeah, Kai, you can turn off your yell function.
- 18:35So we still haven't even talked about this Saturday morning.
- 18:38Saturday morning. I think about Saturday morning.
- 18:40Yeah, my brain just shut off for a second.
- 18:42Yeah. So we're going to chat about
- 18:44that stuff right away. I just thought one more thing
- 18:46that I would tell us about this kind of fun.
- 18:49We've joked a little bit about how in this podcast we sometimes
- 18:53inadvertently land on something that is going to become famous
- 18:59or re famous after we tackle it on the podcast.
- 19:03So there are five things that have projects in the works right
- 19:08away will be coming out soon that maybe just maybe Hollywood
- 19:14can thank our podcast for in the end of this year.
- 19:19In 2026 we will have another Jumanji movie.
- 19:25You can't take claim for that one.
- 19:27I think they were on the fence if they were going to follow it
- 19:30up with a sequel and then we just kind of pushed them over
- 19:32there. Well, hold on, these four guys
- 19:35from Canada. Doing the same I think.
- 19:38We have to do. Now one living in sex myth.
- 19:41Do you know how competitive the podcast market is there there's.
- 19:45Three people, I think. There is also another Ninja
- 19:49Turtles movie coming out in 2027, There is a sequel to
- 19:55Spaceballs coming out in 2027. The next Descendants movie
- 20:01Wicked Wonderland will be out later this year.
- 20:04And lastly in 2025 Funko Pops announced pre-orders for a line
- 20:13of Land Before Time bobbleheads. John what?
- 20:18Funko Pop going. Under that is also true, so
- 20:22we'll see if those actually. Funko pops going under.
- 20:26Lots of people buy Funko Pops. Unfortunately, every store
- 20:30stocks millions of Funko Pops. They feel like they've made far
- 20:35too many obscure characters. They should have started with
- 20:38Land Before Time, obviously. OK, well that was my fun look
- 20:44back at the last 49 episodes. It's one of those things where
- 20:49Gosh kind of made a joke that he didn't think we were going to
- 20:53make it past three episodes, but legitimately it didn't look like
- 20:58we were going to make it past four.
- 21:00Like I think the 4th episode was Batman and then the fifth one
- 21:07chance Kai and I recorded Fast and the Furious 35 without John
- 21:13and that. Was a beautiful experience that.
- 21:16Was a bad experience and it was like, OK, well it was a fun run
- 21:19while I last did so. Kai was joking, but really it
- 21:25was pretty accurate. It blows my mind to think that
- 21:29we have 50 episodes at this point.
- 21:32So I guess I want to say thank you to you 3 for putting up with
- 21:37me and this podcast for that long.
- 21:39And to our listeners who have tuned in for that many episodes
- 21:44or skipped some of them. You know what I mean?
- 21:47Tuned in for most. It blows my mind that we're
- 21:50still growing. Spotify Rapped has said that
- 21:54essentially as many people as were listening to us last year,
- 21:58that many new people found us again this year.
- 22:03Obviously not nearly that many stuck around, but that means
- 22:06that we're still growing. And who knows, if we do another
- 22:1050 episodes, maybe we'll have more than 10 listeners to say.
- 22:16Yeah, I want to take this moment to acknowledge Tim.
- 22:20Tim, you are the one who started this.
- 22:24You're the one who records, edits, posts every episode.
- 22:28And makes our T-shirts. As.
- 22:31Much as you tried to recruit me, I have not participated.
- 22:35So. You heard us cats together.
- 22:39You even bought AVCR and AVHS for the episode we're recording
- 22:44right now. This podcast exists because of
- 22:48you. It's your intentionality that's
- 22:51created so many of these fun connections and memories.
- 22:53So thank you, Tim. Thanks, John.
- 22:56Yeah, I don't think I would have wanted the job of editing all
- 22:59this down. I can get through it once and
- 23:02that's the recording. Yeah, I have to listen to each
- 23:05of these like 4 times and then he chooses to listen to them
- 23:08again once he's uploaded them. Well, that's for the metrics.
- 23:15Yeah. We.
- 23:17Need those. Kylin, I feel like you get a
- 23:21behind the scenes look that chance and I don't.
- 23:24Anything else you want to share about what your dad gets up to
- 23:27over there? It is very odd he put so much
- 23:31time into editing them and then he immediately listens to them
- 23:36physically. You can force me to do.
- 23:38Next level. Thanks, Tim.
- 23:40You're welcome. I guess I don't know, sounds
- 23:43pretty painful for chance I'm. Glad you do it.
- 23:49Podcast for me has been a way that we continue to connect even
- 23:53though we live in different places and I've shared this a
- 23:57handful of times but still to this day my wife knows when the
- 24:01new podcast drops because she hears me laughing in the other
- 24:04room. Also thank you Chancing Chi for
- 24:08your patience. Has got 100 more movies for my
- 24:11childhood or more. We're never watching Speed
- 24:15Racer, are we? Never watching clutch powers.
- 24:19You can put it up for a vote, but spy hard. 2 might win up the
- 24:24nonexistent movie we just watched.
- 24:28Spy Hard again to watch. We're going to get to recording
- 24:31and be like, wait a second, this.
- 24:33Is just spy hard 2 inspired 1 again?
- 24:37I do really appreciate that it is a way that we get to still
- 24:42spend time together, even distance.
- 24:45By having a reason to come together, it means that we're
- 24:49making time for each other. If people are looking for a
- 24:52secret sauce or a secret reason why we still do it, I think at
- 24:57the end of the day, that is really it is.
- 24:59It's an excuse for me to hang out with you guys.
- 25:03OK, so let's talk about some we get.
- 25:07To talk about the mall clown, we.
- 25:09Do get to talk about the mall clown.
- 25:11That's right. So to catch up listeners on what
- 25:15we did, as John inferred, I bought a VHS tape that was
- 25:21essentially a recorded block of Saturday morning cartoons.
- 25:26And then when the VCR that I had didn't work, I meant I also had
- 25:30to buy a VCR. But we got together and we
- 25:33watched some cartoons. There were some funny
- 25:38commercials and stuff that Kai definitely wants to talk about.
- 25:43But essentially the shows that came on were King Arthur and the
- 25:47Knights of Justice, Captain Planet, Sonic the Hedgehog, Free
- 25:53Willy. Sonic the Hedgehog.
- 25:56And reboot. Is that what we want to do?
- 25:58Do we want to like go in order or what do you guys want to talk
- 26:01about? Some of these I want to talk
- 26:04about. More than others.
- 26:05So I just say whatever we fancy. Maybe I don't know if this
- 26:08helps, but to just even say what are Saturday morning cartoons in
- 26:13the world of streaming and the previously cable TV?
- 26:16Like what is a Saturday morning cartoon?
- 26:19Sure. So back in the day.
- 26:22Back in a lot. Yeah, when we had to walk uphill
- 26:25both ways, the block of cartoons that networks purchased were
- 26:32relegated to Saturday mornings when kids didn't have school.
- 26:38It would be a long standing habitual viewing experience for
- 26:43kids to wake up first thing in the morning on Saturday and
- 26:47TuneIn and watch their cartoons. Overtime networks would develop
- 26:53that would do cartoons all the time, like Cartoon Network or
- 26:58Teletune. And a lot of these big networks
- 27:01also owned those or would see that they would be moving all
- 27:06the cartoons to be watchable at any time of day.
- 27:09And so they would eventually dissolve Saturday morning
- 27:14cartoons and replace it with sports.
- 27:16So it's something that's been gone now for quite some time.
- 27:21Chance and Kai, I honestly don't even know if you guys were alive
- 27:24when Saturday morning cartoons were a thing.
- 27:26But for the longest time, that was your cartoon block.
- 27:30And you knew that if you woke up on a Saturday morning, you could
- 27:33catch all the best shows or several good shows, then have to
- 27:37watch Littlest Hobo and then more good shows after.
- 27:42So in this case, we got some shows that we were very familiar
- 27:46with and some shows that we weren't as familiar with.
- 27:50I don't think any of us had seen King Arthur and the Knights of
- 27:53Justice before. It was a bunch of football
- 27:57players that time traveled back to the Knights of the Round and
- 28:03they became King Arthur and all those famous Knights.
- 28:07And I mean, I have no nostalgia for this show, so I don't have a
- 28:13lot to talk about. Does anybody have anything that
- 28:15they want to say? It was weird up with Merlin.
- 28:21Was he just regular Merlin? I just thought it was really
- 28:24funny that it was just like. Oh yeah?
- 28:27What's up, dude bro? Merlin dude bro.
- 28:31Merlin. Oh yeah.
- 28:35Yeah, I would need dog poop moments just out of nowhere.
- 28:38And he was like, Merlin, don't kiss me on the cheek.
- 28:43What? Nobody was talking about kissing
- 28:46you on the cheek. You just decided that that what
- 28:50was happening. The other episode of TV that I
- 28:54really have nothing that I want to talk about is tragically
- 28:57reboot, because coincidentally the.
- 29:01Exact same episode. I'm so infuriated by that.
- 29:04When we did an episode based on reboot three years ago now, John
- 29:10picked an episode where they turned the graphics down to be
- 29:14really bad. I said in that episode I would
- 29:17never watch that again, and lo and behold, we get one episode
- 29:22on this VHS tape and it's that terrible episode.
- 29:26Not only that, that is the final thing we get to watch that day.
- 29:31That is true. We just.
- 29:32Have to sit through it for no point.
- 29:35When it said Next up reboot I was like oh wouldn't it be funny
- 29:38if it was that stupid one we watched before?
- 29:41And of course, it had to be all right, John.
- 29:45You referenced it in an episode earlier this season.
- 29:49Tell us about the Free Willy cartoon.
- 29:55So earlier in the season we recorded Free Willy Show about
- 30:01an orca slash killer whale and it's good friend.
- 30:05What's Willy's human friend's name?
- 30:08Is it Jesse so? The only difference between the
- 30:12live action movie and the cartoon is that Jesse can
- 30:17telepathically communicate with animals.
- 30:20And also there's like robots and stuff, so.
- 30:24No, no, no, the only. Difference.
- 30:27Yeah, I seem to remember there being cyborgs in the original
- 30:32movies. But anyways, this episode we got
- 30:37to meet a giant eel. That was like irradiated by a
- 30:41meteor or something or other radioactive chemicals.
- 30:46So just like in the movie. We see this in another show that
- 30:50we watched but trying to get some environmental messages into
- 30:55kids programming. What show was that?
- 30:59It might have something to do with Captain Planet.
- 31:03He's a hero. Gonna take pollution down to 0.
- 31:08Anyways, so this episode was about this giant Yale, who was
- 31:13unfortunately made big by. You got the big kind of
- 31:17pollution, which is really sad to see.
- 31:20You hate to see a big eel that got the big juice.
- 31:23The. Big juice.
- 31:25You mean I could be. Never mind.
- 31:28OK, moving up. Are you gonna?
- 31:30Say. No, I thought, I thought you
- 31:33were promoting steroids for a second.
- 31:36Maybe I could have muscles, too. That's all I got on Free Willy.
- 31:39Michael Jackson didn't even make an appearance.
- 31:42Which is so sad because he played the orca in the other
- 31:45movie so. You imagine the first movie was
- 31:53inhumane, They couldn't get an orca, so every time Jessie's
- 31:57just riding on Michael Jacksons back.
- 32:04Willie Smoke opens up and at the back you can see Michaels.
- 32:11Can you imagine? Here's a voice on the whale.
- 32:16So John already mentioned we got Captain Planet a hero.
- 32:20He's a hero. Captain Planet was gonna make an
- 32:23appearance on this podcast at some point. 100% that was gonna
- 32:27happen. So we got it out of the way here
- 32:30and we had an episode where the kids fly around the world and
- 32:35kidnap animals. Chance and Kai.
- 32:37Had you guys ever seen Captain Planet before?
- 32:39I had not I'm. Sure I have, baby.
- 32:42It's perpetuated media so much that I've just threw osmosis.
- 32:46Simply seen an episode. Sure there.
- 32:49Is a set of characters from different regions that are
- 32:52supposed to be, well, that a person from wherever would
- 32:55identify with. But it was really strange
- 32:59because the guy who was the American Wheeler, his character
- 33:02was just that he was really annoying.
- 33:05He was like the magic school bus.
- 33:07What's the guy's name? The kid.
- 33:09Yeah, it's funny that you should say that because you can pull up
- 33:12some memes. Each of the Planeteers has a
- 33:16member of the Magic School Bus that looks exactly like a
- 33:20younger version of them. So the main cast of the Magic
- 33:24School Bus is the same cast as in Captain Planet.
- 33:29Yeah. I'm looking at fan theories that
- 33:32Magic School Bus and Captain Planet have a shared universe.
- 33:36Captain Planet is actually the bus.
- 33:37Which villain does Miss Frizzle become?
- 33:41Is she not Gaia? God of the Universe.
- 33:43Nice try, She's that. Sorry God of anti pollution
- 33:47propaganda. Thank you.
- 33:48So for those who aren't familiar, Captain Planet is
- 33:51about Mother Earth gathering a kid from each continent giving
- 33:56them a power ring with some kind of elemental power.
- 33:59When they combine all their they create a superhero called
- 34:04Captain Planet whose blue skinned with green hair and they
- 34:08go and stop pollution and environmental haters.
- 34:12Bye, guys. So Captain Planet is meant to be
- 34:15an avatar of the Earth, and the Earth is covered by mostly
- 34:19water, which is presumably what his skin is supposed to be.
- 34:23But that's why enemies or bad guys can hurt Captain Planet
- 34:27with pollution. They are leveraging the strength
- 34:30of the the Earth, but the Earth is fragile as well.
- 34:33And so all of its propaganda that's meant to teach kids that
- 34:38the Earth needs us as much as we need it, when Captain Planet
- 34:43will come to their aid and help them when they need it,
- 34:46Sometimes he needs them too. And then also sometimes the
- 34:50episode's just about kidnapping animals.
- 34:53That guy in that one, wasn't he making plastic water bottles?
- 34:57How dare he? I'm imagining Adam West Batman
- 35:00where everything's like pow bam and whatever and it's just
- 35:04Captain Planet fighting a billowing thing of smoke.
- 35:07Back and forth that vlog he does say in this episode, just call
- 35:11me an old blowhard, no? I won't.
- 35:17No, I won't. I refuse.
- 35:20Tom Cruise was the original voice for Captain Planet, but he
- 35:24dropped out after six episodes they rerecorded.
- 35:28This episode felt weird because the objective of the episode was
- 35:32never met. Yeah, like we need to get all
- 35:35these animals back to their natural locations, and then they
- 35:38didn't do that. I can't imagine that we're going
- 35:41to come back to Captain Planet in a future episode, so I just
- 35:44thought I'd share this funny anecdote.
- 35:46I watched the Captain Planet episode a couple years back and
- 35:50it's about this guy who's illiterate and one of the bad
- 35:55guys tricks him into pesticide all over the crops.
- 36:01He's got a whole warehouse full of toxic waste and they say
- 36:06poisonous with a skull and crossbones on them.
- 36:09But he takes a sticker of a happy apple and he sticks it
- 36:13over the skull and crossbones so it says poison with this happy
- 36:18apple. Later on the sticker comes off
- 36:21and he's like Oh no it's poisonous.
- 36:24Supposed to give you this messaging at the end like learn
- 36:27how to read, stay in school, don't be an idiot who pours
- 36:30chemicals on trees. But the bad guy could have put a
- 36:34sticker over the word poisonous too, like.
- 36:38The real problem is happy apples.
- 36:40The real problem is that bad guy didn't have a printer that was
- 36:43big enough to cover up the lettering too I guess.
- 36:47Remember, kids never trust labels.
- 36:49The toys for Captain Planet I guess had to be manufactured
- 36:52using recycled and Earth friendly materials.
- 36:55Oh, I did not even consider that.
- 36:58That's pretty cool, actually. Yeah.
- 37:00In a world where micro plastics are going to kill all of us,
- 37:04it's nice to know that at. Least the captain.
- 37:06Planet Toys didn't kill us. None of you eat them all.
- 37:09If you eat the toys, those are macro plastics, not macro
- 37:13plastics. And the last cartoon that we
- 37:17watched was Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehog.
- 37:22Has a kicking theme song, although in retrospect is not
- 37:27nearly as cool as I remembered it.
- 37:30I don't know if you guys felt the same way, but in my head
- 37:33cannon it was like a rock ballad.
- 37:36I knew all the words to the song, but listening to it is
- 37:40kind of folky. Like.
- 37:42Someone on a banjo while this song is playing.
- 37:45Not nearly as cool as my 8 year old brain has told me that it
- 37:50was. But it is a good reminder that
- 37:52he's the fastest thing alive. I never seen this episode, it
- 37:59was about other Dragons in the world.
- 38:02Yeah, I was glad that I had never seen this.
- 38:04Before had you seen any episodes, Kai?
- 38:07I'd seen the episodes of the other Sonic TV show that came
- 38:11out around the same time. I'd not seen any of this show.
- 38:14OK, yeah, this one. I'm sure that this show has some
- 38:17better episodes, but boy am I wishing I saw the other Sonic
- 38:21show you wish. Really.
- 38:23You like the other Sonic show more?
- 38:25I prefer the idea of the other Sonic show over that stupid
- 38:29dragon. Oh.
- 38:31Chili dogs. Hey kids, remember, don't do
- 38:33drugs. Chili dogs.
- 38:35I did not enjoy anything related to that stupid dragon.
- 38:39It was that. So for our listeners in the
- 38:42early 90s, Mario ruled the world.
- 38:45There were statistics that Mario was more recognizable to Kids
- 38:52Christ than Jesus or Mickey Mouse.
- 38:55He was everywhere. And so when Sega started trying
- 39:00to take over the market, they wanted to flood it with images
- 39:06of Sonic the Hedgehog. Which means that they let 2
- 39:09rival cartoon companies make completely different cartoons at
- 39:16the same time just in an effort to see what stuck.
- 39:20One of them was a very goofy slapstick show and the other one
- 39:25was a very dark post apocalyptic one.
- 39:29The post apocalyptic 1 was the one that John and I grew up with
- 39:33and the one that we watched the episode of recently.
- 39:36The content of this one was weird.
- 39:39It was about finding Dragons out in the world and the dragon
- 39:43character of the cast is very annoying on a good day.
- 39:47So certainly not one of the better episodes, but but I would
- 39:51take this show over the other show any day of the week.
- 39:55You don't like scratching grounder?
- 39:57I don't have issues with specific bad guys.
- 39:59I don't like Doctor Robotnik or Doctor Robotnik's mom.
- 40:04I do have an issue with Doctor Robotnik's mom, yes.
- 40:07What personal grievances? You wouldn't hear me saying that
- 40:11behind her back. She listens to the podcast,
- 40:14she'll hear it. I think there was an episode of
- 40:17the other Sonic the Hedgehog show where they kidnapped Sonic
- 40:20the Hedgehog and whenever Child Protective Services would show
- 40:24up they would make the prison look like a bedroom and I'm
- 40:27getting flashbacks to that right now.
- 40:30Yeah, Sonic the Hedgehog was really weird early on because
- 40:33all they knew was they had a video game about a blue thing
- 40:37that ran fast. In the original Sonic Bible,
- 40:40Robotnik was his dad and all kinds of weird messiness Sonic
- 40:47went to. Drum circles and hung out with
- 40:49moms who knit. Yeah.
- 40:51That's straight from the Sonic Bible.
- 40:53That is true. Also, Robotnik was used with an
- 40:56egg and that's why he's Doctor Eggman.
- 40:58Also true. John, do you have any feelings
- 41:02about the Sonic episode we watched?
- 41:04It just got me excited about Sonics groupies.
- 41:07I hadn't seen them in a really long time.
- 41:10Yeah, actually, our readers would not know this, but growing
- 41:13up my dad would often get us the old Archie Sonic cartoons.
- 41:18And so I grew up with those for a long time.
- 41:20And so it was cool to. See characters.
- 41:23The Acorn. Acorn.
- 41:25The big seal whose name's Elude. Roder, Roboni.
- 41:29Roboni. Antoine, who was I think my
- 41:32favorite character. Yeah, it was cool to see them.
- 41:35I like shows will come out like Sonic Boom which do really well,
- 41:38but they kind of stick to the troop of Sonic Knuckles Amy, so
- 41:42it was cool to see them again. Did anybody want to talk about
- 41:46the stuff that we watched that wasn't a cartoon?
- 41:48Yes, I do. The first.
- 41:50Ad I want to talk about was this thing called Auction 95.
- 41:54With a name like that, you would assume it's an auction in the
- 41:58year 1995. I say you would assume because
- 42:02we still don't know what it is. The advertisement itself was
- 42:06people running on the beach, nonsensical video footage.
- 42:11You could have told me that those were ads for anything.
- 42:14Yeah, our advertisements were made for locals, so we would get
- 42:18things like kids specs, which we didn't exist.
- 42:23It is not on the Internet. Kids specs sounds like the
- 42:25coolest thing ever went out of business and I could tell you
- 42:28nothing else about it. Well, any place where you can
- 42:31get your eyewear, your glasses, but also it's got a carnival and
- 42:35stuff. It's.
- 42:36An arcade. Coolest idea ever.
- 42:38Because optometrist. Anything mixed with an arcade is
- 42:41better. Sorry to all of our optometrist
- 42:43listeners. I didn't mean about the people,
- 42:45I meant the building. Our viewership goes down to 0.
- 42:49Turns out all along all of our listeners were optometrists.
- 42:54Oh, the Eggo ad. There is an ad where this kid
- 42:56really wants to get an Eggo waffle.
- 42:58So what he does is he rotates A skyscraper 45° so that the Eggo
- 43:04waffle will fall out of a window.
- 43:06I just miss old commercials. I think they were just so random
- 43:11and over the top. We had commercials for Polly
- 43:15Pocket. It was Polly Pocket for Barbie.
- 43:18At the Lifesavers Gummies commercial.
- 43:21That one was a. There's a.
- 43:22Commercial for cereal, in which an old lady got really close to
- 43:26the camera and it just felt so. 90s in the 90s they were trying
- 43:30to make a commercial look cool. They'd zoom up to an old
- 43:33person's nostrils. That was just a thing they.
- 43:35Did that's what cool people do? 1 ticket to Elmo please.
- 43:44Great call back. Great call back.
- 43:46Respect. Good.
- 43:47Thank you. Thank you.
- 43:48It also invites me of back when we used to have to watch
- 43:51commercials, you'd watch the same commercials over and over
- 43:55and over again in a short period of time.
- 43:58I've got on here. It just says make the right
- 44:01choice. And I feel like that was
- 44:03probably around 40% of the commercials don't do this thing.
- 44:07I don't know John, I feel like you could experience another
- 44:11viewing session where you just watch the same commercials over
- 44:14and over again by maybe trying to watch a video online that
- 44:19just tells you about the same Walmart gum commercial.
- 44:23Oh my goodness. That was the chipmunk adventure,
- 44:26I think. Yeah, if you watch it in the
- 44:28website the daily. Chanted on an ad blocker so he
- 44:31was safe. We weren't.
- 44:33Yeah, I watched it on Internet Archive.
- 44:35Kylin, you made reference to kids shouldn't do yes, accuracy.
- 44:45Is fear mongering. If you have too many cigarettes,
- 44:49you'll get all cold and then your head will explode.
- 44:53One of the ads we got beep for beep, we talked about the mall
- 44:56demon. We have to.
- 44:58We kept getting this ad for the Mill Creek Mall in which it
- 45:02would show you the shots of the mall and tell you about the mall
- 45:06and then a gesture would sneak on.
- 45:11Screen he would materialize next to your son's bed while a child
- 45:16is. Asleep.
- 45:17I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Stephen King, base Pennywise
- 45:21the Clown on the Mill Creek demon.
- 45:24Yeah, you know on YouTube now for people to find old lost
- 45:29footage. So please, if you're out there
- 45:31and you're really into lost footage, please find us the Mill
- 45:33Creek Mall Demon and anything about kids.
- 45:37Max We. Got an?
- 45:38Ad that lasted. 15 minutes. It was all about driving safety.
- 45:43In my notes it says Club 24. I love Club 24.
- 45:55It's. Awesome club 24 was a wild ride.
- 45:58Did they start this off doing exercises?
- 46:01Which was? Great.
- 46:03I think to clarify it was local programming for kids, the
- 46:07quality disc. 0. These things were recorded in a
- 46:11church basement or something, Yeah.
- 46:14No use of any kind of editing software or program.
- 46:16The Club 24 video had people doing exercises, but my favorite
- 46:21section was this part where they had these puppets, and they did
- 46:24not try to disguise the fact that they were controlled by
- 46:28adult people at all. And the video would go, let's do
- 46:31some safety work. I'm gonna do something, and
- 46:34you're gonna tell me what's not right.
- 46:36And it lasted so long. But at one point in time, he
- 46:40brought in a baby. And it looked like a real.
- 46:43Human. Baby for a couple.
- 46:45Seconds I've got in my notes here it just says bringing a
- 46:48baby to pocket land. It was so good.
- 46:52Why do you think it's called Club 24?
- 46:544 hours a day. Ohh yeah.
- 46:56I'm at Google club 24. That's a joke.
- 46:59Sorry, I can't. Tell if you're typing or falling
- 47:02down the stairs. OK, well does anybody have
- 47:07anything else they want to add about the Saturday morning
- 47:10cartoons? There's a part of me that feels
- 47:13like when I was a kid I had so much more thick skinned for
- 47:15commercials. Nowadays I'm like, oh, 30
- 47:18seconds. I can't bear this.
- 47:20But it was like hour or two of watching this.
- 47:22I'm like, no, commercials are bad, but this is terrible.
- 47:25It's crazy to me you pay for satellite and then half the
- 47:29watch time is ads. If you tried to do that today
- 47:32you'd get laughed out of the room because it's insane.
- 47:34Who would want to? It's only a third of the time.
- 47:38Thank you very much. When TiVo came out and you could
- 47:42Fast forward through commercials, that was mind
- 47:45boggling. Yes, there was a button on
- 47:48remote controls that had skipped forward 30 seconds and if you
- 47:52double tapped it you could skip forward 2 1/2 minutes so it
- 47:58would skip to the end of the commercials.
- 48:01That button was a game changer for recorded TV.
- 48:05I also feel like Chance was talking about what we could
- 48:08tolerate when we were younger. As a kid, I tolerate any show
- 48:12that came on TV. If you were watching Saturday
- 48:15morning, it didn't matter if there was one good show and then
- 48:18four bad shows and then one good show.
- 48:20You just kept on trucking through all the bad shows.
- 48:23Yeah, let's see. Get YouTube Kids today watching
- 48:26Scubby toilet. Kyle, that's primetime.
- 48:28What are you talking about? So that is our 50th episode
- 48:34celebration. I can't imagine that we'll make
- 48:37it another 50, but I couldn't imagine that we would make it to
- 48:40this fifty. So who knows what the future has
- 48:43in store. We have two more episodes left
- 48:46this season and for our keeners who like to watch alongside us
- 48:51and be prepped for the next episode.
- 48:54Our next episode is a double feature based on the Ewok movies
- 49:00Caravan of Courage and Battle for Endor.
- 49:04Has anyone seen any of these movies?
- 49:07We watched the animated Ewok shows.
- 49:10Yeah, OK. That is not what this is.
- 49:13I don't know. Kylan, unfortunately, is not.
- 49:16I have fond memories for some of the stuff in some of these
- 49:19movies. John, do you have anything that
- 49:21you'd like to warn them about or prep them for before jumping
- 49:25into these? Yes, I have some repressed
- 49:27nostalgia for giant spiders because of these movies.
- 49:31There is a giant fighter and caravan of courage, that is
- 49:35true. I find the repressed nostalgia
- 49:38title really funny because it implies that it's still
- 49:41nostalgia. It's just like you don't want to
- 49:42think about that. Can we go back to the good old
- 49:45days when I was terrified of fighting?
