Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:41Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this episode, we are talking about
- 0:44Speaker 1: DMC five, a bad Lands announcement, Bob Dylan's Gotta Serve Somebody,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and of course your voicemails, your texts, your dms and
- 0:53Speaker 1: more and as always, a whole lot of rosie. All right, Discos,
- 0:57Speaker 1: let's get into it, all right, all right, all right?
- 1:08Speaker 1: Do you guys, you guys remember where you were when
- 1:11Speaker 1: you first heard punk rock, or maybe when you first
- 1:14Speaker 1: heard rock and roll, or maybe it was neither. Maybe
- 1:17Speaker 1: it was the first time you heard heavy metal or
- 1:19Speaker 1: hip hop or whatever music it was that was extra
- 1:24Speaker 1: that gave you, that extra bit of gas, that shot
- 1:27Speaker 1: of adrenaline that made you, as a kid or a
- 1:30Speaker 1: young adult, just sit back and marvel at the awesomeness
- 1:34Speaker 1: and the energy that was unfolding in front of you,
- 1:37Speaker 1: a new kind of energy, that new shit, that extra thing.
- 1:42Speaker 1: You thought you'd seen and heard it all before. You
- 1:44Speaker 1: were in a metal you were into Priest in ac
- 1:46Speaker 1: DC and Black Sabbath, and then someone plays you Black
- 1:49Speaker 1: Flag and the Misfits and Who'scared Do, and your whole
- 1:51Speaker 1: fucking world opens up. Your brain explodes because there's a
- 1:55Speaker 1: new gear, a gear that you didn't know was possible,
- 1:58Speaker 1: that makes it possible to go faster, to go harder,
- 2:01Speaker 1: to go deeper. I'm guessing that we all had some
- 2:06Speaker 1: version of this experience, even if it wasn't with you know,
- 2:10Speaker 1: going from metal to punk, or from R and B
- 2:13Speaker 1: to soul, or from disco to hip hop or whatever.
- 2:17Speaker 1: I think we've all had some version of this experience
- 2:20Speaker 1: where you hear that new thing and it just it
- 2:23Speaker 1: just it just shows you these possibilities that you didn't
- 2:27Speaker 1: know could exist. And I hope we've all had it.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I mean I've had it for sure. I've talked about
- 2:34Speaker 1: it before. I just talked about it two seconds ago.
- 2:37Speaker 1: But the real thing is I've actually had it happen
- 2:40Speaker 1: at least twice. I had it, like I said above,
- 2:42Speaker 1: when it discovered punk and hardcore, the same punk and
- 2:45Speaker 1: hardcore that every kid who grows up in the eighties
- 2:48Speaker 1: and nineties discovers. But then later as a young adult,
- 2:51Speaker 1: much later, many years after discovering and subsequently listening to
- 2:55Speaker 1: punk and hardcore records, and again as a young adult
- 2:58Speaker 1: later on, I discovered the MC five and there it
- 3:02Speaker 1: was another gear. God damn, what was this? What was
- 3:07Speaker 1: this energy? It was faster, it was louder, it was
- 3:09Speaker 1: more fucked up and more dangerous. And it happened before
- 3:14Speaker 1: all the punk stuff happened. How hadn't I heard this before?
- 3:17Speaker 1: Hearing the MC five for the first time. It fucked
- 3:20Speaker 1: me up, not just because of how good it was,
- 3:22Speaker 1: but because I had that hardcore feeling of real regret.
- 3:27Speaker 1: I'd never experienced the MC five live. It just wasn't
- 3:31Speaker 1: gonna happen. And if the band made me feel like
- 3:35Speaker 1: this when I watched them on some grainy VHS footage
- 3:40Speaker 1: or whatever, what the hell would it have made me
- 3:42Speaker 1: feel like if I saw them live in person? I'll
- 3:46Speaker 1: never know. I still get that feeling. I got that
- 3:48Speaker 1: feeling when I was researching the MC five for this
- 3:52Speaker 1: past episode of Disgraceland, and not just reading about them,
- 3:55Speaker 1: but going back and watching YouTube clips and just being like,
- 3:59Speaker 1: oh my god, this band just impossible to explain. I
- 4:07Speaker 1: barely even try to describe it in the latest episode
- 4:09Speaker 1: of disgrace Land. It's a fools errand it's impossible to do.
- 4:14Speaker 1: I know that I wasn't there, but that's not the
- 4:16Speaker 1: reason I can't explain it. I can't explain it because
- 4:18Speaker 1: the MC five is wholly different from most bands on
- 4:21Speaker 1: almost every level, the wholly different than almost every other
- 4:25Speaker 1: band in rock and roll history. And I can tell
- 4:28Speaker 1: you that I know that, and I know that I
- 4:32Speaker 1: can't come close to touching what they were like live
- 4:35Speaker 1: with words. No one can't. I don't know how I
- 4:38Speaker 1: know this, I just do.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:39Speaker 1: That said, the band's history and the criminal antics of
- 4:41Speaker 1: their guitar player, Wayne Kramer, those things can be explained,
- 4:45Speaker 1: and you can hear all of that, and about the
- 4:48Speaker 1: band's revolutionary formative years, the completely fucked up world of
- 4:51Speaker 1: Detroit that they were operating in the late sixties amidst
- 4:54Speaker 1: like a real political insurrection and fucking crazy violence at
- 4:58Speaker 1: a scale seldom seen tomestically in our country's history. Just
- 5:02Speaker 1: banana stuff, tanks rolling down the street, showing up in
- 5:05Speaker 1: dudes front yards, all characteristics of time and place and
- 5:09Speaker 1: circumstance that contributed to the incredible uniqueness and raging soul
- 5:14Speaker 1: that was the MC five. Fuck this band for a minute, anyway,
- 5:20Speaker 1: was the greatest band on the planet. And then you
- 5:22Speaker 1: blinked and they weren't, and their members they barely made
- 5:26Speaker 1: it out alive. Wayne Kramer in particular heroin breaking and
- 5:29Speaker 1: entering prison and then of course redemption, dope guns and
- 5:32Speaker 1: fucking in the streets. Ladies and gentlemen, I just gave
- 5:35Speaker 1: you a fucking testimonial. I gave you the MC five.
- 5:38Speaker 1: It's in your feeds right now. Check it out. I
- 5:41Speaker 1: hope you're not disappointed. I did my best to explain Slash,
- 5:44Speaker 1: not explain the band. If you don't know the band,
- 5:48Speaker 1: go YouTube their early shit. Just check out my episode.
- 5:51Speaker 1: It's all in there and buckle up. Okay, great, great,
- 5:56Speaker 1: great American rock and roll. All right. Next week we
- 5:59Speaker 1: have another truly American character as well coming into your feeds.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I want you to get ready for one of the
- 6:03Speaker 1: most violent, most depraved, and most completely fucked up stories
- 6:06Speaker 1: that I've ever told. It's the story of blues musician
- 6:09Speaker 1: Skip James. I told this story live at the Newport
- 6:12Speaker 1: Folk Festival last summer and tribute to Skip James, who
- 6:16Speaker 1: had performed back at Newport in the early sixties as
- 6:19Speaker 1: part of his sort of resurrection. And given that medium,
- 6:24Speaker 1: you know, live on stage twenty five minute set musical accompaniment,
- 6:28Speaker 1: I wasn't able to go into nearly enough of the
- 6:32Speaker 1: gory and horrific details that make up Skip James's story.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Just this story reminded me of like a twentieth century
- 6:41Speaker 1: Western in some weird way, but just you know, with
- 6:44Speaker 1: with with just completely unhinged, it's totally fucked up. It's
- 6:50Speaker 1: this story of a man living in the pre modern
- 6:54Speaker 1: world who ends up a completely in one of them
- 7:00Speaker 1: was unique situations possible in the modern world. It's it's nuts.
- 7:06Speaker 1: This is one of my favorite Disgraceland episodes. Is the
- 7:08Speaker 1: team here loved making it as well. It's one of
- 7:11Speaker 1: Matt Matt Boden, the guy who mixes most of our stuff.
- 7:13Speaker 1: It's all of our stuff, actually it's it's it's his
- 7:16Speaker 1: favorite Disgrace Sland episode. I can't wait for you guys
- 7:19Speaker 1: to hear this, Skip James, is the next new full
- 7:22Speaker 1: episode of Disgrace Sland coming your way in what will
- 7:25Speaker 1: be Tuesday, April seventeenth, next in your feet, Skip James.
- 7:29Speaker 1: All right, get ready for that. As always, we've got
- 7:32Speaker 1: a ton of archive episodes that were previously exclusive. We're
- 7:35Speaker 1: releasing those still. They're coming your way. We've been doing
- 7:37Speaker 1: this all year. This is what happens, guys, when you
- 7:40Speaker 1: have over one hundred episodes in your archive and you're
- 7:44Speaker 1: coming out of this exclusive arrangement. I can't just dump
- 7:47Speaker 1: them all on you at once. I got to drip
- 7:49Speaker 1: them out. That's what we've been doing. I hope you're
- 7:51Speaker 1: digging it. This week's no different. We got news stories
- 7:54Speaker 1: on the Rolling Stones Studio fifty four low Key, one
- 7:58Speaker 1: of my favorite Disgraceland episodes. Love the music we did
- 8:01Speaker 1: in this one. By the way, get an episode on
- 8:03Speaker 1: Prints and lots and lots and lots and lots and
- 8:06Speaker 1: lots of more Disgraceland. Of course, you know the drill.
- 8:09Speaker 1: There is even more music and true crime storytelling happening
- 8:12Speaker 1: over on our YouTube channel with sixty second music misadventure shorts.
- 8:16Speaker 1: That's YouTube dot Com. Slash at Disgraceland Pod. Get on
- 8:20Speaker 1: over there and subscribe for visual music and true crime storytelling.
- 8:23Speaker 1: All right, I'm gonna catch my breath, take a quick break,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and I will be back in a flash. All right,
- 8:48Speaker 1: disc goes. Let's get into what has become my favorite
- 8:50Speaker 1: part of the I was gonna say the after party,
- 8:52Speaker 1: but actually what I mean is it's actually my favorite
- 8:55Speaker 1: part of doing this job, almost to this sort of
- 8:57Speaker 1: conversation we have that we've kind of stumbled into here,
- 9:01Speaker 1: and this conversation that goes both ways each week. I
- 9:05Speaker 1: hope you're feeling it coming back at you. Let's be real,
- 9:07Speaker 1: We've always been having some sort of conversation since Disgraceland
- 9:11Speaker 1: launched five years ago. But as a mechanism of this
- 9:13Speaker 1: bonus after party episode thing we're doing, we started, as
- 9:17Speaker 1: you know, this call in line. We've got voicemails and
- 9:19Speaker 1: texts and we've added another layer of communication. So I'm
- 9:23Speaker 1: here for it, and quite honestly, I like it so
- 9:26Speaker 1: much that I'm trying to figure out other ways that
- 9:28Speaker 1: we can engage like this. In the meantime, though, let's
- 9:32Speaker 1: get let's get into the voicemails. Six one, seven, nine,
- 9:34Speaker 1: zero six six six three eight, voicemail, Leave me a message,
- 9:39Speaker 1: send me a text six one seven nine zero six
- 9:41Speaker 1: six six three eight. Like I said, send me a text,
- 9:45Speaker 1: drop me a voicemail, just like this masshole here from
- 9:48Speaker 1: the nine to seventy.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Hey, Jake Fellow, masshole calling here. Hey. If remember back
- 9:54Speaker 2: in the late eighties and early nineties, right before grunge
- 9:57Speaker 2: became a huge thing, it was this whole music scene
- 10:00Speaker 2: out of Manchester, England. They call it Madchester. It was
- 10:03Speaker 2: like the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. It's basically drug
- 10:07Speaker 2: fueled psychedelic dance music. I think that would be an
- 10:10Speaker 2: interesting topic for a show, particularly the Happy Mondays and
- 10:14Speaker 2: the lead singer Sean Ryder. They basically sold ecstasy at
- 10:18Speaker 2: all their gigs. So anyways, keep doing what you're doing,
- 10:20Speaker 2: love it, Take.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Care, tie dude. Great idea. I touched on the Manchester
- 10:25Speaker 1: scene a bit in the Oasis episodes that I did.
- 10:29Speaker 1: But what you're talking about, a deeper dive into the
- 10:32Speaker 1: Madchester scene through Happy Mondays that is super interesting, super compelling,
- 10:38Speaker 1: and I'm into it. It's a great suggestion. I mean,
- 10:40Speaker 1: I don't know what else to say. Thank you. Let's
- 10:43Speaker 1: do another voicemail, and then I got a ton of text.
- 10:45Speaker 1: So you spend more time this week doing text than
- 10:47Speaker 1: I normally do. Do one more voicemail. Let's put the
- 10:51Speaker 1: voicemail from Paul in the three one five.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Hello, just flew from the three to one to five
- 10:58Speaker 2: for your episode. I know you were looking for something
- 11:00Speaker 2: may be different. This is kind of cool. Is from
- 11:02Speaker 2: Pink Floor like one of these days, I'm gonna cut
- 11:05Speaker 2: you into little tiny pieces. Listen to it here. It
- 11:08Speaker 2: is pretty cool. Let me know what you say, peace olt,
- 11:11Speaker 2: you show us great, you love us?
- 11:13Speaker 1: All right? I played this because I don't really know
- 11:15Speaker 1: what Paul is referencing here. Sounds like Paul might be wasted,
- 11:18Speaker 1: but I suspect that what he's saying is that if
- 11:22Speaker 1: we dig into these songs, parts of these songs any anyways,
- 11:26Speaker 1: there's sort of violent true crime parts like in Pink Floyds,
- 11:28Speaker 1: I'm going to cut youat a little pieces from their
- 11:30Speaker 1: song one of these days, and how that might make
- 11:33Speaker 1: for good episode fodder. And I have to agree with you, Paul.
- 11:37Speaker 1: One of the things I'm trying to do, guys, and
- 11:38Speaker 1: you heard the results of this effort in the lou
- 11:40Speaker 1: read episodes that I just released a couple of weeks ago.
- 11:42Speaker 1: One of the things I'm trying to do is use
- 11:43Speaker 1: some of the darker material that's in the music of
- 11:46Speaker 1: the subjects that I cover as jumping off points into
- 11:50Speaker 1: areas of exploration of these artists rather than just doing
- 11:53Speaker 1: you know, artists commits X crime, but how does true
- 11:56Speaker 1: crime either get represented in their songs as use that
- 12:00Speaker 1: as a means for me to sort of explore the artist,
- 12:02Speaker 1: kind of go back the other way, rather than just
- 12:05Speaker 1: doing this sort of peanut butter and chocolate straight music
- 12:07Speaker 1: and true crime thing that we've been doing. I'll always
- 12:10Speaker 1: do it all. I'm just, you know, trying new ways
- 12:12Speaker 1: to entertain you guys, and frankly, to keep myself interested
- 12:15Speaker 1: and make it challenging for me as a writer. You'll
- 12:18Speaker 1: hear what I'm talking about a little bit more in
- 12:20Speaker 1: the upcoming Bruce Springsteen episode of Disgrace Land. It's coming
- 12:23Speaker 1: out in a couple weeks, but I don't want to
- 12:25Speaker 1: give that away. I'm just saying that this approach that
- 12:27Speaker 1: Paul is suggesting is one that I take in that
- 12:30Speaker 1: Boss episode, and Paul, if I'm hearing you correctly and Honestly, dude,
- 12:34Speaker 1: I don't know that I am, but if I am,
- 12:36Speaker 1: I will. I'll look into this Pink Floyd one of
- 12:39Speaker 1: these days. It's maybe there's an interesting way to get
- 12:41Speaker 1: back into the story of Pink Floyd through this song.
- 12:44Speaker 1: All right, let's do some text six one seven nine
- 12:48Speaker 1: zero six three three eighth. Like I said, you can
- 12:51Speaker 1: text me, you can voicemail me. Some of the texts
- 12:54Speaker 1: I respond to just in the app, and some I
- 12:57Speaker 1: respond to you on here. This one from the four
- 13:01Speaker 1: to one five. All right, this is from the four
- 13:04Speaker 1: one five. They say Succession colon. If parentheses hard, if
- 13:09Speaker 1: the kids close the Pierce deeal, will they fail it
- 13:12Speaker 1: into a tortured four chain appendage, leading Logan to buy
- 13:16Speaker 1: it for one dollar two the picture show your thoughts
- 13:20Speaker 1: on Harold and Maud. Your work as it is, your
- 13:23Speaker 1: work has an insanely positive effect on my life. Thank
- 13:26Speaker 1: you more than thank you, that's what they say, JJ,
- 13:29Speaker 1: and then JJ leaves his or her number. Well, I watched,
- 13:34Speaker 1: as I'm sure a lot of you guys did, the
- 13:36Speaker 1: latest episode of Succession that was released this past Sunday.
- 13:42Speaker 1: So part of your question here is irrelevant. But I
- 13:47Speaker 1: like the idea of it being turned into a tortured
- 13:49Speaker 1: four Chan appendage that's kind of hysterical. I'm still everyone's
- 13:54Speaker 1: watching Succession. I know I'm clearly still watching them all
- 13:56Speaker 1: caught up. That last episode was fricking bananas. I'm looking
- 13:59Speaker 1: forward to when season wraps and we can talk about
- 14:01Speaker 1: this more fully. I don't want to get into anything
- 14:03Speaker 1: here that's gonna spoil it for anyone, So we'll just
- 14:06Speaker 1: keep touching at the Succession thing here week to week
- 14:10Speaker 1: until we find a reason to go deeper. Let's see
- 14:13Speaker 1: what else we got here from the two four zero. Hey, Jake,
- 14:16Speaker 1: Caroline from Baltimore here started listening to Disgraceland last week. Wow,
- 14:20Speaker 1: hey Caroline, good to know you. Welcome, Welcome to Disgraceland,
- 14:25Speaker 1: she says, started listening to Disgraceland last week, and I'm
- 14:27Speaker 1: totally hook hook exclamation point. Been listening non stop, even
- 14:32Speaker 1: during work. If you like hockey, have you seen the
- 14:35Speaker 1: Netflix documentary Untold Crimes and Penalties. I have. It's about
- 14:39Speaker 1: CT waste management. I've seen this who bought a local
- 14:42Speaker 1: hockey team? Totally ridiculous, very silly, lots of hockey fights
- 14:45Speaker 1: and the weirdest best soundtrack. Thanks for everything, all the best.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I saw that episode of.
- 14:51Speaker 2: God.
- 14:52Speaker 1: What is the name of this Netflix thing that she
- 14:53Speaker 1: have it in here? The Netflix documentary Crime and Penalties.
- 14:56Speaker 1: I think I think the name of the series is
- 14:58Speaker 1: actually Untold. Crime in Penalties is the episode name. I
- 15:02Speaker 1: could be wrong, but the one she's referencing on Hockey.
- 15:04Speaker 1: This Netflix series is fucking great and if you have
- 15:08Speaker 1: not seen it, guys, go watch it. It's hysterical, uh
- 15:11Speaker 1: and highly entertaining. Really great doc All right, Caroline, thanks
- 15:15Speaker 1: for texting guys six one seven nine zero six six
- 15:17Speaker 1: six three eight from the two oh three Hot Damn
- 15:21Speaker 1: Jake after hearing your after party recommendation of Muddy Waters
- 15:24Speaker 1: is hard Again. Here, I am in my kitchen rocking
- 15:26Speaker 1: as hard as I can while peeling potatoes. Actually, fuck
- 15:28Speaker 1: the potatoes too awesome, not the boogie. That's when I'm
- 15:31Speaker 1: talking about two oh three. I told you I'm not
- 15:34Speaker 1: gonna steer you guys wrong on my music recommendations. Hard

- 15:53Speaker 1: what you're doing, bro, all right, TG, I get a
- 15:54Speaker 1: Zezy Top thing in the works coming in a little bit.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Nothing nothing, I haven't put pen to paper yet, and
- 16:00Speaker 1: I know what I'm gonna do there. I got a
- 16:01Speaker 1: solid point of view, solid idea. I'm stoked to do it.
- 16:04Speaker 1: If you were listening here, TJ. Earlier in this after
- 16:07Speaker 1: Party episode, we talked about Skip James and old blues guy.
- 16:12Speaker 1: You're gonna hear that soon. You're also gonna hear some
- 16:16Speaker 1: news on Robert Johnson soon as well. I'm excited to
- 16:19Speaker 1: bring you that. So yeah, we've got more blues coming.

- 16:41Speaker 1: This was pre Margaritaville days and more of storytelling songs
- 16:46Speaker 1: like you do so well, in your great podcast. The
- 16:48Speaker 1: Four are Jimmy's first four albums, telling tales of as
- 16:51Speaker 1: many beach side adventures. The live recording is a great
- 16:54Speaker 1: way to spend a warm New England afternoon with a
- 16:55Speaker 1: six pack of your favorite. Well, that would be rock
- 16:57Speaker 1: a Rolla. I don't know if you know about this,
- 16:59Speaker 1: but I've got a beer. It's called rock Rolla. It's
- 17:01Speaker 1: distributed and made by orin O Brewing in Maine, but
- 17:03Speaker 1: you can find it all throughout Massachusetts and in Maine.
- 17:06Speaker 1: So I digress. Going back to the text, you can
- 17:09Speaker 1: enjoy with a six pack of your favorite and maybe
- 17:11Speaker 1: a few friends with theirs enjoy John T. John T,
- 17:14Speaker 1: thanks dude, Thank you for the Jimmy Buffett recommendations and
- 17:17Speaker 1: for giving me a chance to plug my new beer,
- 17:20Speaker 1: rock Corolla. Anyways, let's go back. Let's do some more
- 17:22Speaker 1: texts six one seven nine zero six six six three
- 17:25Speaker 1: eight from the three to ZHO two. Did you know
- 17:28Speaker 1: that Sean Bateman from Rules of Attraction in Patrick Bateman
- 17:31Speaker 1: from American Psycho are Brothers? Come on, man, you think
- 17:35Speaker 1: I'm an amateur? Of course I did. Do you know
- 17:36Speaker 1: the Vincent Vega and Vic Vega from pulp fiction and
- 17:40Speaker 1: reservoir Dagga Brothers. I see your Bateman brother, and I
- 17:44Speaker 1: won up you my Vega Brothers. Let's see here. What
- 17:47Speaker 1: do we got here? Seven eight to one per year
- 17:49Speaker 1: comment about flawless script. I concur I don't know what
- 17:52Speaker 1: they're talking about. Gonna keep going here from the two
- 17:55Speaker 1: oh six, Hey brother, Jacob's Big Tony. Here in my
- 17:58Speaker 1: top five nineties drama slash crime movies, Untouchables Higher Learning.
- 18:04Speaker 1: This is in reverse order. Five Untouchables four Higher Learning,
- 18:07Speaker 1: three Menace to Society, two Boys in the Hood, one
- 18:09Speaker 1: New Jack City, solid fucking list man New Jack City. Uh,
- 18:14Speaker 1: just amazing movie. Great movie. I've seen a bunch of these.
- 18:17Speaker 1: They're all really fucking good. I don't know that I
- 18:19Speaker 1: love Untouchable, so I don't know. I don't know that
- 18:22Speaker 1: I do. All right, what else we got the four
- 18:25Speaker 1: to four to oh text in Jake, it's Matt from
- 18:27Speaker 1: the four to four oh Now in the four to
- 18:29Speaker 1: eight oh. I love these the area code specificity, definitely
- 18:35Speaker 1: feeling your last bonus episode. Muddy Waters is magnificent and
- 18:39Speaker 1: George Benson is the Man. I am a former police
- 18:42Speaker 1: officer in Arizona and I met George Benson on a
- 18:45Speaker 1: call a few years ago. He was super gracious and welcoming.
- 18:49Speaker 1: I got to see his studio and memorabilia, which was unbelievable.
- 18:52Speaker 1: He is from Pittsburgh and I'm from Cleveland. So every
- 18:54Speaker 1: time after that I saw him walking his dog, I
- 18:57Speaker 1: would always yell go Browns on the patrol vehicle Clouds,
- 19:00Speaker 1: and I would typically get a top gun saloot back,
- 19:02Speaker 1: giving him the bird, you know, the finger rock a roller, brother,
- 19:06Speaker 1: keep up the great work. And there's a picture here
- 19:08Speaker 1: of Officer Matt with George Benson. Officer Matt's in his
- 19:13Speaker 1: uniform and George Benson it's wearing a sharp blue top.
- 19:16Speaker 1: That's fucking cool.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Man.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Love that text, thank you all right? One more from
- 19:20Speaker 1: the seven to one six. I'm a female and loved
- 19:25Speaker 1: Boogie Nights Marky. Mark is so goofy. What's not to love?
- 19:29Speaker 1: Plus the music really grows. Nicole and Buffalo Nicole, I
- 19:32Speaker 1: totally fucking agree. Good stuff. Nicole. All right, let's do
- 19:37Speaker 1: some Facebook messages here, Facebook peeps, I apologize. I find
- 19:43Speaker 1: that I don't use Facebook enough. I need to start.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I need to open the app more. You know what
- 19:48Speaker 1: I don't like about it. I don't like that you
- 19:50Speaker 1: need to go to another app to get to your messages.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I find that to be annoying. As a result, I
- 19:55Speaker 1: don't check my messages that often. But I'm gonna make
- 19:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna be better about that. This one.
- 20:00Speaker 1: It's from Sandy Bloom on Facebook. She says, Okay, some
- 20:03Speaker 1: people binge watch, I binge listen, and since I stumbled
- 20:05Speaker 1: into disgraceland last week, I have listened to most of
- 20:09Speaker 1: what you have so brilliantly put out there. Goddamn all caps,
- 20:13Speaker 1: three exclamation points. I'm Sandy, and I'm an addict. I
- 20:16Speaker 1: also am a fellow entrepreneur, and I have an idea.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Interested in collaborating on a group gathering for your junkies discos?
- 20:26Speaker 1: You must have me confused with another true crime podcaster.
- 20:29Speaker 1: The listeners are called discos, not junkies. You know this, Sandy,
- 20:33Speaker 1: even though you're new, you know so I'm just gonna
- 20:36Speaker 1: go ahead and edit what you said here. Interested in
- 20:37Speaker 1: collaborating on a group gathering for your discos? I own
- 20:40Speaker 1: a travel agency and want to help you host a
- 20:43Speaker 1: group cruise or cruiser land where it can get super
- 20:48Speaker 1: intense and maybe you can offer some exclusive swag. I
- 20:53Speaker 1: think you could be creating a free vacation for you
- 20:55Speaker 1: and your wife plus a little cash in your pocket.
- 20:57Speaker 1: In my favorite episode so far, Fucking Mary, that was insane.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Well what do you guys think about that? Well, if
- 21:03Speaker 1: we did some sort of like meet up, get together,
- 21:06Speaker 1: something cool, I don't know what. I don't know. I
- 21:08Speaker 1: have no fucking idea. Friends of mine are in a band.
- 21:11Speaker 1: They're doing a cruise for their for their fans. That's cool.
- 21:14Speaker 1: I don't want to do that. I don't want to
- 21:15Speaker 1: do a cruise, But uh, I don't know. What can
- 21:18Speaker 1: we come up with? Ideas? Hit me what kind of
- 21:20Speaker 1: cool Disgraceland event could we do besides just a live
- 21:24Speaker 1: show and not a cruise. Something something around storytelling, music,
- 21:30Speaker 1: of course, perhaps film. I don't know. I don't know.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Let's start talking about it. Let's start thinking about it.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Six p one seven nine zero six six six three eight.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Let's use Sandy's message here as a jumping off point.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Also hit me up on Facebook, wherever, Instagram, whatever, TikTok,
- 21:46Speaker 1: Twitter at Disgraceland pod, and I will respond just like
- 21:51Speaker 1: I do to the voicemails. In the text, we get
- 21:54Speaker 1: another Facebook here from Ralph Solis. I've been listening to
- 21:57Speaker 1: the pod for a little bit now, and I was
- 21:58Speaker 1: wondering if you have already or even thought about covering
- 22:01Speaker 1: Gary Stewart. Thanks. Enjoy the show now, listen, listen, Ralph Solace.
- 22:06Speaker 1: I could have just googled Gary Stewart, but I didn't.
- 22:10Speaker 1: I don't know who the fuck Gary Stewart is. I
- 22:12Speaker 1: should I know, I should. I know. I'm gonna get
- 22:15Speaker 1: ten gazillion messages after this. You're don't fuck Gary Stewart's
- 22:18Speaker 1: a second guitar player in fuck fuck band or whatever.
- 22:21Speaker 1: But you know, I don't know who he is. I'm
- 22:23Speaker 1: not gonna pretend to know everything I don't. I don't,
- 22:25Speaker 1: although I probably do know, I just don't know if
- 22:29Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So Ralph, maybe, maybe, man,
- 22:32Speaker 1: let's figure out who Gary Stewart is first as a start,
- 22:35Speaker 1: and we'll take it from there. All right, thanks for writing, Ralph.
- 22:38Speaker 1: All right, let's move into some Instagram dms from Anne Koteney. Hello,
- 22:43Speaker 1: my friend, greetings from Boulder, Colorado. I've been catching up
- 22:46Speaker 1: lately and wanted to let you know that b York.
- 22:48Speaker 1: She's mentioning Byorke here because we just did a Byork
- 22:51Speaker 1: story over on our YouTube channel. That's YouTube dot com
- 22:54Speaker 1: slash at Disgrace lamb Pod go check that out. I've
- 22:58Speaker 1: been catching up lately. This is what Anne says, and
- 23:01Speaker 1: wanted to let you know that Buorke used to be
- 23:03Speaker 1: my next door neighbor for a time when I lived
- 23:05Speaker 1: to New York City. She was seeing the artist Matthew Barney.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Check him out. If you don't know him, I do
- 23:09Speaker 1: know him. He's fantastic and he had a studio slash
- 23:12Speaker 1: lot next door to my place. I had kind of
- 23:14Speaker 1: a nodding acquaintance with Byorke, so much so that when
- 23:17Speaker 1: my friends through a birthday party for me on our roof,
- 23:20Speaker 1: we saw Byork and Matthew and we invited them and
- 23:23Speaker 1: they declined but wished me a happy day in a
- 23:25Speaker 1: very fun memory. So cool. And then she goes on
- 23:28Speaker 1: right here from the same era, I was living in
- 23:30Speaker 1: the meatpacking district in New York City. He used to
- 23:32Speaker 1: frequent this cool French diner a block away. I saw
- 23:35Speaker 1: Lou Reed and Lorie Anderson there a lot. Lou was
- 23:38Speaker 1: as sour as you would expect Lowell. I'm sure I
- 23:41Speaker 1: have other tales to share as I listened to more
- 23:42Speaker 1: of this season. Other thoughts. Saday is Sage, Sage. I
- 23:47Speaker 1: can never say it. Shade is the absolute bomb and
- 23:50Speaker 1: always has been. I've always been a George Benson fan
- 23:53Speaker 1: since I was a kid. This season kicks some serious ass.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Keep on keeping on rock and roll, all right, Ann Cotney,
- 23:59Speaker 1: awesome story. Love that. Love it when people have serious
- 24:03Speaker 1: real world interactions with some of the subjects that we
- 24:07Speaker 1: talk about in disgrace Land and hit me up with
- 24:09Speaker 1: their personal stories. Very cool. Keep it coming, all right,
- 24:13Speaker 1: Let's do one more DM here. This is from rat
- 24:17Speaker 1: Tailed Jimmy on the Instagram, who says, man, the Guns N'
- 24:21Speaker 1: Roses episode got me right in the teenage angst exclamation point.
- 24:24Speaker 1: My buddy grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, and they used
- 24:26Speaker 1: to skate outside the arenas and listen to bands, and
- 24:29Speaker 1: they were there when Guns and Roses opened for the Cult.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Isy Stradling came creeping out of the shadows after the
- 24:35Speaker 1: set and sold these kids tickets to the Cult for
- 24:37Speaker 1: like fifteen bucks. I love that. I love that. Always
- 24:41Speaker 1: on the hustle is he straddling. All right, you know
- 24:43Speaker 1: how to get in touch with you guys. You can
- 24:44Speaker 1: call me six one seven nine zero six six six
- 24:46Speaker 1: three eight. You can leave me a text, You can
- 24:48Speaker 1: send me a voicemail, or you can send me a
- 24:50Speaker 1: DM or a message on Facebook, on Twitter, on Instagram,
- 24:53Speaker 1: on TikTok at disgrace Land pod. I'm gonna take a
- 24:57Speaker 1: quick break, Sip it some tea, drink some water, do
- 25:02Speaker 1: some pushups, come back and do the recommendations part. All right,
- 25:20Speaker 1: it's the recommendations part. This is the recommendations part, the
- 25:23Speaker 1: part of the after party where I recommend the things
- 25:26Speaker 1: that I'm reading, the things that I'm watching, the things
- 25:28Speaker 1: that I'm listening to, and I recommend them to you
- 25:30Speaker 1: and then you provide your recommendations to me and we discuss.
- 25:33Speaker 1: So I'm going to use this part of the show
- 25:35Speaker 1: to make an announcement of sorts and talk about some
- 25:38Speaker 1: slight programming additions that we have come in your way.
- 25:42Speaker 1: All right, bad Lands, you know bad Lands our Disgraced
- 25:45Speaker 1: Lands spin off show, a show that deals not with
- 25:48Speaker 1: the true crimes of rock stars, but instead with the
- 25:50Speaker 1: true crimes of your favorite Hollywood stars and sports heroes.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Bad Lands is coming back and coming back strong and
- 25:58Speaker 1: coming back soon. Our next season on May third, with
- 26:03Speaker 1: our episode on Richard Pryor. In the meantime, you may
- 26:07Speaker 1: have noticed that we've reactivated the feed, the bad Lands Feed.
- 26:10Speaker 1: We've been dropping a couple previously released episodes to keep
- 26:13Speaker 1: it warm, but like I said, starting on May third,
- 26:17Speaker 1: the bad Lands Feed will have not one, but two
- 26:20Speaker 1: new episodes per week, and we'll continue at that clip
- 26:25Speaker 1: on an always on basis, just like Disgraceland. Full episodes
- 26:29Speaker 1: will be released on Wednesdays, and I will be doing
- 26:33Speaker 1: a bad Lands bonus episode on Fridays. The bad Lands
- 26:37Speaker 1: Bonus episode is going to be a lot like The
- 26:38Speaker 1: After Party, but it will of course be bad Lands
- 26:40Speaker 1: and largely film focused, as opposed to, of course being
- 26:43Speaker 1: Disgraceland and music focused. I'm going to call the bad
- 26:46Speaker 1: Lands Bonus episode the Rap Party, all right, So, if
- 26:51Speaker 1: you're not subscribed to bad Lands, if you want stories
- 26:55Speaker 1: on Richard Pryor, on, Robin Williams on, John belush On,
- 27:01Speaker 1: Carrie Fisher on, Will Smith On, Anna, Nicole Smith On,
- 27:05Speaker 1: Mel Gibson, Marlon Brando, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Hugh Grant,
- 27:11Speaker 1: Roman Polanski, Jane Mansfield in more. If you want to
- 27:15Speaker 1: hear those stories, you need to go to the bad
- 27:18Speaker 1: Lands Feed and whatever podcast app you use and subscribe
- 27:22Speaker 1: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon, Sirius, XM, does not matter. It's
- 27:27Speaker 1: available wherever, Go iHeart, wherever you're at, Go subscribe to
- 27:32Speaker 1: bad Lands. You're not gonna get the Richard pryor the
- 27:35Speaker 1: Jane Mansfield, the Marlon Brandos, the Robin Williams. You're not
- 27:39Speaker 1: gonna get these episodes in the Disgraceland feed. So I'm
- 27:43Speaker 1: gonna be I'm gonna have this whole other fucking party
- 27:46Speaker 1: going on when we're talking about all these crazy actors,
- 27:49Speaker 1: same format as Disgraced, this whole other show. It's gonna
- 27:52Speaker 1: be happening, and you're not gonna get those stories unless
- 27:56Speaker 1: you are subscribed to the bad Lands Feed. Let's blow
- 27:59Speaker 1: the shit up, all right. Search bad Lands in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, wherever, subscribe. Okay,
- 28:06Speaker 1: make sure you get the episodes as they come out.
- 28:09Speaker 1: I'm fucking stoked for this next season. I've never been
- 28:13Speaker 1: this excited for a bad Lands season launch, not even since,
- 28:16Speaker 1: not even the first one we did. That one happened
- 28:17Speaker 1: it happened like so fast, and I was kind of
- 28:20Speaker 1: running by the seat of my pants this one. We've
- 28:22Speaker 1: taken our time. We've got this thing figured out. I'm
- 28:26Speaker 1: very excited. In the Rap Party the Bonus episode, it's
- 28:28Speaker 1: gonna be different. It's gonna be different than the After Party. Okay,
- 28:32Speaker 1: you're basically gonna be getting all new content in a
- 28:36Speaker 1: similar format, but new content, film related content. I think
- 28:40Speaker 1: the film and TV recommendations that I'm doing here in
- 28:44Speaker 1: the After Party are gonna live in the Rap Party
- 28:47Speaker 1: in the bad Lands Bonus episode, just because it's it's
- 28:51Speaker 1: that's the subject. We do over there. We do film
- 28:53Speaker 1: over there. Okay, we'll keep this music focused here, we'll
- 28:57Speaker 1: do the film and TV stuff over there. And we're
- 28:59Speaker 1: gonna have other elements of the show over there, engagement
- 29:03Speaker 1: pieces that we're not doing here. So you're not gonna
- 29:06Speaker 1: want to miss that. That's gonna be me. It's gonna
- 29:08Speaker 1: make me blabbing for another thirty forty five minutes a week,
- 29:12Speaker 1: offering up new shit, new content, new whatever. You're gonna
- 29:16Speaker 1: have to get it over there, so subscribe to bad Lands.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Were coming quick? May third, All right, all right? In
- 29:23Speaker 1: the meantime though some recommendations. Okay, I'm gonna start with
- 29:26Speaker 1: what I listened to. It was Easter Sunday, this past Sunday,
- 29:29Speaker 1: Easter Sunday. So I thought, all right, all right, I'm
- 29:32Speaker 1: gonna do it. I'm gonna dial up one of Bob
- 29:34Speaker 1: Dylan's records from as much derided Christian era, it being
- 29:37Speaker 1: the Holy Day and all. So while I was out
- 29:39Speaker 1: in my yard get my smoker ready, I smoked some ribs,
- 29:42Speaker 1: I smoked a whole chicken, did a whole rock of
- 29:44Speaker 1: baby back ribs, new smoker. Everything came out great. I
- 29:48Speaker 1: had the Holy Spirit going through me, and I think
- 29:50Speaker 1: it was part partly due to Bob Dylan's Slow Train
- 29:53Speaker 1: to Come and had that record on. Never really listened
- 29:56Speaker 1: to that record from start to finish. It's incredible. You
- 29:59Speaker 1: got to serve somebody. That song obviously the standout track,
- 30:03Speaker 1: but when You're Gonna Wake Up another amazing song sounds
- 30:05Speaker 1: like I was written about the exact moment in time
- 30:07Speaker 1: we're living through right now. This record's fantastic. Of course,
- 30:10Speaker 1: it's not as good as the golden era Dyl and stuff,
- 30:12Speaker 1: Blood on the tracks, Blond on Blonde, But what is
- 30:16Speaker 1: right right, nothing is. But it's an awesome album despite
- 30:20Speaker 1: it not being secular. So I'm not sure why that
- 30:22Speaker 1: matters to people. But if you haven't listened to Slow
- 30:24Speaker 1: Training Coming for this or for whatever reason, go ahead
- 30:27Speaker 1: and check it out. You're gonna dig it all right. Also, weirdly,
- 30:30Speaker 1: I spent last week listening to a lot of disco,
- 30:33Speaker 1: and you'll hear why in a minute. But specifically now,
- 30:36Speaker 1: Rogers is self titled chic album from nineteen seventy seven
- 30:40Speaker 1: is tremendous. If you know disco or funk or soul
- 30:46Speaker 1: or seventies eighties pop music, you're gonna know this record.
- 30:49Speaker 1: But if you don't trust me, just go just get
- 30:53Speaker 1: on whatever music app you use, type in chic and
- 30:57Speaker 1: go for the self titled one from seventy seven. It's
- 31:00Speaker 1: great and it's got me. It just it has me
- 31:03Speaker 1: thinking that this whole stupid attitude that has prevailed for
- 31:07Speaker 1: years now going back to disco, this I hate disco thing.
- 31:11Speaker 1: You know, anyone who says that about the music is
- 31:16Speaker 1: just just I just question their tastes. Like I get it,
- 31:20Speaker 1: if you just objectively don't like something, I totally understand that.
- 31:25Speaker 1: But to just say it sucks, and to discount that
- 31:28Speaker 1: it's music, or discount the fact that it has any
- 31:30Speaker 1: merit creatively is asinine. And for those who just dismissed
- 31:36Speaker 1: disco culture as a culture, well, I've got serious questions
- 31:41Speaker 1: about your character. Why anyone would diss an entire culture
- 31:45Speaker 1: that isn't out to hurt anyone or cause any harm
- 31:48Speaker 1: in any way is beyond me. I don't get it.
- 31:53Speaker 1: But I think if you're one of the knuckle draggers
- 31:55Speaker 1: who's out there just dismissing disco culture, like the bullshit
- 32:00Speaker 1: that went on at Tiger Stadium when they blew up
- 32:02Speaker 1: those disco records and all that, yeah, whatever, you should
- 32:07Speaker 1: take a long look in the fucking mirror. You got
- 32:10Speaker 1: serious issues. Disco was an incredibly inclusive culture at a
- 32:14Speaker 1: time when that was that was necessary for a lot
- 32:17Speaker 1: of the people who are partaking in that culture, and
- 32:20Speaker 1: it was. It was fucking phenomenal. Some great music came
- 32:24Speaker 1: out of that world in that scene, and of course
- 32:26Speaker 1: it became over commercialized, and I get why there was
- 32:28Speaker 1: a reaction against it. That's natural, that's just the pendulum
- 32:31Speaker 1: swinging back, all right. But that whole disco sucks bass
- 32:36Speaker 1: argument is just gross to me. And I say all this,
- 32:39Speaker 1: You're like, why the fuck is he talking about disco? Well,
- 32:41Speaker 1: a couple of reasons. One coincidentally, the Disco Studio fifty
- 32:45Speaker 1: four episode of Disgraceland, it was previously exclusive. It's being
- 32:48Speaker 1: released this week. You can hear that, and I get
- 32:51Speaker 1: into this take in there. But specific to this block
- 32:54Speaker 1: of the after party, the recommendations block this new series,
- 32:58Speaker 1: the second season, I should say, of a newish series
- 33:01Speaker 1: on HBO has launched called Music Box. This is sort
- 33:05Speaker 1: of like Bill Simmons's version of the thirty for thirty thing,
- 33:09Speaker 1: but with music, I guess kind of anyhow, they have this.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Jasonisbel was this documentary on Jasonisbel was the season two
- 33:18Speaker 1: episode one piece that launched, and I started watching it
- 33:23Speaker 1: and it was good, and it reminded me that I
- 33:24Speaker 1: missed most of most of season one. So I went
- 33:27Speaker 1: back and I dialed up some of the old episodes
- 33:30Speaker 1: and I watched this episode called Mister Saturday Night deals
- 33:34Speaker 1: heavily with the main sort of empresario and producer behind
- 33:41Speaker 1: the movie Saturday Night Fever and the soundtrack, which was
- 33:45Speaker 1: insanely successful. Both things were incredibly successful but it's also
- 33:49Speaker 1: just as a documentary. It's done really well, and it
- 33:54Speaker 1: just it gives you that seventies New York thing that
- 33:57Speaker 1: I just fucking love. I need it. I need to
- 33:59Speaker 1: pump into my veins every couple months or so. So
- 34:02Speaker 1: that's out. It's called Mister Saturday Night. It's been out
- 34:05Speaker 1: for a while. Actually check that out. But Music Box
- 34:06Speaker 1: is the greater, the overarching series that's on HBO. And
- 34:10Speaker 1: like I said, episode one of season two just launched
- 34:13Speaker 1: on Jason As on Jason isbel It's good. Check that out.
- 34:16Speaker 1: I don't know what's coming for the rest of the
- 34:18Speaker 1: season for season two, but I'm sure it'll be great.
- 34:20Speaker 1: All right. What I am reading, I'm reading Bill Janovis's
- 34:24Speaker 1: book on Leon Russell. Bill Janovitz, of course, it's my
- 34:27Speaker 1: buddy Scott's older brother. Bill's from Buffalo Tom. He has
- 34:31Speaker 1: a new book on a musician, on musician Leon Russell,
- 34:34Speaker 1: called The Master of Space and Times, Journey through Rock
- 34:36Speaker 1: and Roll History. It is awesome. I didn't know much
- 34:38Speaker 1: about Leon Russell going into this. It's a fantastic introduction.
