  I

• 1:03
  The

  shepherd
• 1:03
  puts
• 1:04
  the
• 1:04
  sheep
• 1:05

• 1:05
  himself,
• 1:06
  sacrifices
• 1:07
  himself
• 1:07
  if

  necessary.
• 1:09
  A
• 1:09

• 1:10
  man
• 1:11
  is
• 1:11
  not
• 1:11
  a
• 1:11
  real
• 1:11
  shepherd.
• 1:12
  The
• 1:12
  sheep
• 1:13
  mean
• 1:14
  nothing
• 1:14
  to
• 1:15
  him.
• 1:15
  He
• 1:16
  sees
• 1:16
  a
• 1:16
  wolf
• 1:16
  come
• 1:17
  and
• 1:17
  runs
• 1:17
  forward,
• 1:17
  leaving
• 1:18
  the
• 1:18
  sheep
• 1:18
  to
• 1:18
  be
• 1:18
  ravaged
• 1:19
  and
• 1:19
  scattered
• 1:20
  by
• 1:20
  the
• 1:20
  wolf.
• 1:21
  He's
• 1:21
  only
• 1:22
  in
• 1:22
  it
• 1:22
  for
• 1:22
  the
• 1:22
  money.
• 1:23
  The
• 1:23
  sheep
• 1:23
  don't
• 1:23
  matter
• 1:24
  to
• 1:24
  him.
• 1:25
  I
• 1:25
  am
• 1:25
  the
• 1:25
  good
• 1:25
  shepherd.
• 1:26
  I
• 1:26
  know
• 1:26
  my
• 1:26
  own
• 1:27
  sheep
• 1:27
  and
• 1:27
  my
• 1:27
  sheep
• 1:28
  know
• 1:28
  me.
• 1:29
  In
• 1:29
  the
• 1:29
  same
• 1:29
  way
• 1:30
  the
• 1:30
  Father
• 1:30
  knows
• 1:31
  me
• 1:31
  and
• 1:31
  I
• 1:31
  know
• 1:31
  the
• 1:31
  Father.
• 1:32
  I
• 1:33
  put
• 1:33
  the
• 1:33
  sheep
• 1:33
  before
• 1:34
  myself,
• 1:35
  sacrificing
• 1:36
  myself
• 1:36
  if
• 1:36
  necessary.
• 1:38
  You
• 1:38
  need
• 1:39
  to
• 1:39
  know
• 1:40
  that
• 1:40
  I
• 1:40
  have
• 1:40
  other
• 1:41
  sheep
• 1:41
  in
• 1:41
  addition
• 1:41
  to
• 1:41
  those
• 1:42
  in
• 1:42
  the
• 1:42
  pen.
• 1:43
  I
• 1:43
  need
• 1:44
  to
• 1:44
  gather
• 1:44
  and
• 1:44
  bring
• 1:44
  them
• 1:45
  too.
• 1:45
  They'll
• 1:45
  all
• 1:46
  recognize
• 1:46
  my
• 1:47
  voice.
• 1:48
  Then
• 1:48
  it
• 1:48
  will
• 1:48
  be
• 1:49
  one
• 1:49
  flock,
• 1:50
  one
• 1:50
  shepherd.
• 1:52
  This
• 1:52
  is
• 1:52
  why
• 1:52
  the
• 1:52
  Father
• 1:53
  loves
• 1:53
  me.
• 1:53
  Because
• 1:53
  I
• 1:54
  freely
• 1:54
  lay
• 1:55
  down
• 1:55
  my
• 1:55
  own
• 1:55
  life
• 1:56
  and
• 1:56
  so
• 1:56
  I
• 1:57
  am
• 1:57
  free
• 1:57
  to
• 1:57
  take
• 1:57
  it
• 1:57
  up
• 1:58
  again.
• 1:59
  No
• 1:59
  one
• 1:59
  takes
• 2:00
  it
• 2:00
  from
• 2:00
  me.
• 2:01
  I
• 2:01
  lay
• 2:02
  it
• 2:02
  down
• 2:02
  of
• 2:02
  my
• 2:02
  own
• 2:02
  free
• 2:03
  will.
• 2:04
  I
• 2:04
  have
• 2:04
  the
• 2:04
  right
• 2:05
  to
• 2:05
  lay
• 2:05
  it
• 2:06
  down.
• 2:06
  I
• 2:07
  also
• 2:07
  have
• 2:07
  the
• 2:07
  right
• 2:08
  to
• 2:08
  take
• 2:09
  it
• 2:09
  up
• 2:09
  again.
• 2:10
  I
• 2:10
  received
• 2:11
  this
• 2:11
  authority
• 2:12
  personally
• 2:13
  from
• 2:13
  my
• 2:13
  father.
• 2:14
  This
• 2:15
  kind
• 2:15
  of
• 2:15
  talk
• 2:15
  caused
• 2:16
  another
• 2:16
  split
• 2:17
  in
• 2:17
  the
• 2:17
  Jewish
• 2:17
  ranks.
• 2:18
  A
• 2:18
  lot
• 2:18
  of
• 2:18
  them
• 2:18
  were
• 2:18
  saying,
• 2:19
  he's
• 2:19
  crazy,
• 2:20
  a
• 2:20
  maniac.
• 2:20
  He's
• 2:21
  out
• 2:21
  of
• 2:21
  his
• 2:21
  head
• 2:22
  completely.
• 2:22
  Why
• 2:23
  bother
• 2:23
  listening
• 2:23
  to
• 2:24
  him?
• 2:24
  But
• 2:24
  others
• 2:25
  weren't
• 2:25
  quite
• 2:26
  so
• 2:26
  sure.
• 2:27
  These
• 2:27
  aren't
• 2:28
  the
• 2:28
  words
• 2:28
  of
• 2:28
  a
• 2:28
  crazy
• 2:28
  man.
• 2:29
  Can
• 2:29
  a
• 2:30
  maniac
• 2:31
  open
• 2:31
  blind
• 2:32
  eyes?
• 2:34
  That's
• 2:34
  the
• 2:34
  end
• 2:34
  of
• 2:35
  the
• 2:35
  reading.
• 2:35
  Let's
• 2:35
  talk
• 2:36
  a
• 2:36
  little
• 2:36
  bit
• 2:36
  about
• 2:36
  this
• 2:37
  whole
• 2:37
  sensibility
• 2:38
  of
• 2:38
  reimagining
• 2:40
  leadership
• 2:40
  and
• 2:40
  community.
• 2:42
  So
• 2:44
  one
• 2:44
  of
• 2:44
  the
• 2:45
  things
• 2:45
  I
• 2:45
  like
• 2:45
  to
• 2:45
  do
• 2:45
  is
• 2:46
  my
• 2:46
  wife
• 2:46
  and
• 2:46
  I
• 2:46
  take
• 2:46
  walks
• 2:47
  Almost
• 2:47
  every
• 2:47
  day.
• 2:47
  And
• 2:47
  we
• 2:48
  hike
• 2:48
  in
• 2:48
  state
• 2:48
  parks
• 2:49
  and
• 2:49
  national
• 2:49
  parks
• 2:51
  and
• 2:51
  there's
• 2:51
  different
• 2:51
  kinds
• 2:52
  of
• 2:52
  pathways.
• 2:52
  You
• 2:53
  know,
• 2:53
  there's
• 2:53
  different
• 2:53
  kinds
• 2:54
  of
• 2:54
  areas.
• 2:55
  We
• 2:55
  recently
• 2:55
  were
• 2:55
  in
• 2:56
  the
• 2:56
  redwood
• 2:56
  forest
• 2:56
  and
• 2:57
  then
• 2:57
  we
• 2:57
  found
• 2:57
  ourselves
• 2:57
  in
• 2:58
  the
• 2:58
  desert
• 2:58
  of
• 2:58
  Death
• 2:58
  Valley.
• 2:59
  There
• 3:00
  is.
• 3:00
  Every
• 3:01
  group
• 3:02
  brings
• 3:02
  diverse,
• 3:03
  diverse
• 3:03
  groups
• 3:04
  of
• 3:04
  people
• 3:04
  who
• 3:04
  are
• 3:04
  different
• 3:04
  types
• 3:05
  of
• 3:05
  hikers,
• 3:05
  very
• 3:05
  casual
• 3:06
  people
• 3:06
  like
• 3:06
  us.
• 3:07
  And
• 3:07
  to
• 3:07
  be
• 3:08
  very
• 3:08
  serious
• 3:08
  about
• 3:08
  it
• 3:09
  or
• 3:10
  have
• 3:10
  all
• 3:10
  the
• 3:11
  major
• 3:11
  equipment
• 3:12
  that
• 3:13
  it
• 3:13
  takes
• 3:13
  is
• 3:14
  different.
• 3:15
  This
• 3:15
  kind
• 3:15
  of
• 3:15
  reminds
• 3:16
  me
• 3:16
  of
• 3:16
  today's
• 3:16
  passage
• 3:17
  from
• 3:17
  John,
• 3:18
  which
• 3:18
  speaks
• 3:18
  about
• 3:19
  leadership
• 3:19
  and
• 3:19
  inclusion
• 3:21
  in
• 3:21
  ways
• 3:22
  that
• 3:22
  may
• 3:22
  even
• 3:23
  surprise
• 3:23
  us.
• 3:24
  So
• 3:24
  let's
• 3:25
  explore
• 3:25
  three
• 3:26
  progressive
• 3:26
  perspectives
• 3:28
  on
• 3:28
  this
• 3:29
  familiar
• 3:29
  text.
• 3:30
  The
• 3:31
  first
• 3:31
  one
• 3:31
  is
• 3:31
  about
• 3:32
  radical
• 3:32
  servant
• 3:33
  leadership.
• 3:34
  My
• 3:35
  wife
• 3:35
  and
• 3:35
  I
• 3:35
  have
• 3:35
  been
• 3:35
  married
• 3:36
  on
• 3:36
  coming
• 3:36
  up
• 3:36
  on
• 3:36
  34
• 3:37
  years
• 3:37
  and
• 3:37
  we
• 3:37
  raised
• 3:38
  three
• 3:38
  wonderful
• 3:39
  children.
• 3:39
  And
• 3:39
  I've
• 3:40
  learned
• 3:40
  that
• 3:41
  true
• 3:41
  leadership
• 3:42
  sometimes
• 3:42
  isn't
• 3:42
  about
• 3:43
  authority,
• 3:43
  it's
• 3:44
  about
• 3:44
  service.
• 3:45
  Serve
• 3:45
  first
• 3:46
  and
• 3:46
  the
• 3:46
  authority
• 3:47
  will
• 3:47
  be
• 3:47
  given
• 3:47
  to
• 3:47
  you.
• 3:49
  I
• 3:49
  have
• 3:49
  a
• 3:49
  cancer
• 3:50
  support
• 3:50
  podcast
• 3:51
  as
• 3:51
  well,
• 3:52
  and
• 3:52
  we
• 3:52
  really
• 3:53
  talk
• 3:53
  about
• 3:53
  encouraging
• 3:53
  and
• 3:54
  empowering
• 3:54
  others
• 3:55
  rather
• 3:55
  than
• 3:55
  trying
• 3:56
  to
• 3:56
  direct
• 3:57
  them.
• 3:58
  Jesus
• 3:59
  here
• 3:59
  presents
• 3:59
  a
• 4:00
  model
• 4:00
  of
• 4:00
  leadership
• 4:01
  that
• 4:01
  puts
• 4:01
  others
• 4:02
  first.
• 4:04
  When
• 4:04
  you
• 4:04
  see
• 4:04
  a
• 4:05
  great
• 4:05
  team
• 4:05
  play
• 4:05
  and
• 4:06
  a
• 4:06
  great
• 4:06
  basketball
• 4:06
  team
• 4:07
  play,
• 4:07
  it's
• 4:08
  about
• 4:08
  teamwork.
• 4:09
  And
• 4:10
  the
• 4:10
  best
• 4:10
  leaders
• 4:10
  are
• 4:11
  the
• 4:11
  ones
• 4:11
  who
• 4:11
  help
• 4:11
  the
• 4:12
  team
• 4:13
  to
• 4:13
  work
• 4:14
  and
• 4:14
  helps
• 4:14
  everybody
• 4:15
  else
• 4:15
  to
• 4:15
  look
• 4:15
  good.
• 4:17
  Another
• 4:17
  point
• 4:17
  to
• 4:18
  share
• 4:18
  here
• 4:19
  is
• 4:19
  about
• 4:19
  breaking
• 4:19
  down
• 4:19
  barriers.
• 4:21
  When
• 4:22
  Jesus
• 4:22
  mentions
• 4:23
  the
• 4:23
  other
• 4:24
  sheep,
• 4:25
  he's
• 4:26
  challenging
• 4:27
  religious
• 4:28
  exclusivity.
• 4:29
  This
• 4:29
  isn't
• 4:30
  about
• 4:30
  different
• 4:30
  faith
• 4:31
  communities.
• 4:32
  It's
• 4:32
  about
• 4:32
  recognizing
• 4:33
  that
• 4:33
  divine
• 4:34
  love
• 4:34
  transcends
• 4:35
  our
• 4:36
  human
• 4:36
  made
• 4:36
  boundaries.
• 4:38
  Reminds
• 4:38
  me
• 4:38
  how
• 4:39
  things
• 4:40
  like
• 4:40
  music
• 4:40
  and
• 4:41
  sports
• 4:41
  and
• 4:42
  teamwork
• 4:42
  in
• 4:42
  a
• 4:43
  company
• 4:43
  can
• 4:44
  unite
• 4:44
  people.
• 4:44
  People,
• 4:45
  no
• 4:45
  matter
• 4:45
  who
• 4:46
  you're
• 4:46
  cheering
• 4:46
  for,
• 4:47
  if
• 4:47
  you
• 4:47
  cheer
• 4:47
  for
• 4:48
  one
• 4:48
  another,
• 4:49
  then
• 4:49
  you
• 4:49
  can
• 4:50
  have
• 4:50
  a
• 4:50
  great
• 4:50
  team
• 4:51
  become
• 4:52
  a
• 4:52
  community
• 4:53
  in
• 4:53
  those
• 4:53
  moments.
• 4:56
  Another
• 4:56
  point
• 4:56
  is
• 4:56
  about
• 4:57
  voluntary
• 4:59
  vulnerability.
• 5:00
  The
• 5:01
  text
• 5:01
  emphasizes
• 5:02
  Jesus's
• 5:03
  voluntary
• 5:03
  choice
• 5:04
  to
• 5:04
  be
• 5:04
  vulnerable.
• 5:05
  In
• 5:06
  our
• 5:06
  world
• 5:06
  of
• 5:06
  power
• 5:06
  plays
• 5:07
  and
• 5:07
  position
• 5:07
  protecting,
• 5:09
  choosing
• 5:09
  a
• 5:10
  vulnerability
• 5:10
  is
• 5:11
  revolutionary.
• 5:13
  I
• 5:13
  work
• 5:13
  with
• 5:13
  cancer
• 5:14
  impacted
• 5:14
  people
• 5:14
  in
• 5:15
  my
• 5:15
  other
• 5:15
  podcast
• 5:16
  and
• 5:17
  I've
• 5:17
  witnessed
• 5:18
  how
• 5:18
  those
• 5:18
  who
• 5:18
  are
• 5:18
  vulnerable,
• 5:19
  you
• 5:19
  know,
• 5:19
  sensitive
• 5:20
  about
• 5:20
  their
• 5:20
  condition,
• 5:21
  are
• 5:21
  the
• 5:21
  most
• 5:22
  helpful
• 5:22
  ones
• 5:22
  to
• 5:22
  others
• 5:23
  who
• 5:23
  are
• 5:23
  going
• 5:23
  through
• 5:23
  it
• 5:23
  as
• 5:24
  well.
• 5:25
  That
• 5:25
  creates
• 5:25
  authentic
• 5:26
  community
• 5:26
  and
• 5:27
  healing.
• 5:28
  Here's
• 5:28
  your
• 5:28
  action
• 5:29
  step
• 5:29
  for
• 5:29
  the
• 5:29
  day.
• 5:30
  Identify
• 5:31
  one
• 5:32
  boundary
• 5:32
  in
• 5:32
  your
• 5:32
  life.
• 5:32
  It
• 5:33
  could
• 5:33
  be
• 5:33
  social,
• 5:34
  religious
• 5:34
  or
• 5:34
  cultural.
• 5:35
  And
• 5:36
  intentionally
• 5:36
  step
• 5:37
  across
• 5:37
  that
• 5:37
  boundary.
• 5:39
  Maybe
• 5:39
  you're
• 5:39
  having
• 5:39
  coffee
• 5:40
  with
• 5:40
  someone
• 5:40
  who
• 5:41
  is
• 5:41
  a
• 5:41
  little
• 5:41
  different
• 5:41
  than
• 5:41
  you.
• 5:42
  Maybe
• 5:42
  faith
• 5:43
  tradition
• 5:43
  or
• 5:43
  their
• 5:44
  background
• 5:44
  or
• 5:44
  something
• 5:45
  else
• 5:45
  about
• 5:45
  them
• 5:45
  is
• 5:45
  just
• 5:46
  different.
• 5:47
  Or
• 5:47
  maybe
• 5:47
  join
• 5:47
  some
• 5:48
  community
• 5:48
  group
• 5:49
  that
• 5:49
  you
• 5:49
  would
• 5:49
  normally
• 5:49
  consider
• 5:50
  joining.
• 5:51
  Or
• 5:51
  reach
• 5:52
  out
• 5:52
  to
• 5:52
  someone
• 5:52
  you've
• 5:53
  previously
• 5:54
  excluded
• 5:54
  in
• 5:54
  your
• 5:55
  life.

  and
• 6:01

  in
