- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17You can find more information about our church at

- 0:22Thanks for listening. This morning scripture reading
- 0:27comes from. Ephesians.
- 0:30Chapter 5, starting in verse. 8. For you were once darkness, but
- 0:37now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.
- 0:43For the fruit of the light consists in all goodness,
- 0:47righteousness, and truth. And find out what pleases the
- 0:51Lord. Have nothing to do with the
- 0:53fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
- 0:58It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in
- 1:01secret. But everything exposed by the
- 1:04light becomes visible, and everything that is illuminated
- 1:08becomes a light. This is why it is said, Wake up,
- 1:12sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.
- 1:18Be very careful then how you live, not as unwise but as wise,
- 1:23making the most of every opportunity, because the days
- 1:27are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish,
- 1:31but understand what the Lord's will is.
- 1:34Do not get drunk on wine which leads to debauchery.
- 1:38Instead, be filled with the Spirit speaking to one another
- 1:43with psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit.
- 1:47Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving
- 1:51thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our
- 1:55Lord Jesus Christ. This is the Word of God for the
- 1:58people of God. Thanks be to God.
- 2:02Amen. And I want to tell you about the
- 2:07day I had on Tuesday. So I woke up on Tuesday still
- 2:15sick, realizing that the snow hadn't yet been removed after it
- 2:21stopped snowing like it was scheduled to be.
- 2:25Then I had an 8:00 AM MRI on my knee, which is still bothering
- 2:31me after my October surgery. I go back and see the doctor on
- 2:36Wednesday of this week to see what the next steps are.
- 2:39Then that morning I went to PT and put in all that hard work of
- 2:43trying to get my knee back to where it could be and while I
- 2:49was at PTI, got a text message that a tree had fallen in the
- 2:55church parking lot and had to be dealt with.
- 3:01By the time I sat down with Jeremy to record the podcast, he
- 3:06very clearly had a sense of how my day had been going, and it
- 3:12wasn't great. The afternoon was fairly quiet.
- 3:16Then I met with a family from the community about doing a
- 3:19funeral for a family member of theirs, and by the time our
- 3:23prayer session was approaching at 7 PMI realized I just wasn't
- 3:30going to make it. I wasn't going to last through
- 3:33that. So the pastor called out of
- 3:35prayer and as I settled into the couch that evening, I was
- 3:43looking for something right I I was annoyed that there weren't
- 3:49any ice cream or cookies in the house.
- 3:53So I ended up turning on the Sixers game, scrolling on my
- 4:00phone and it wasn't until the next morning as my stomach
- 4:07grumbled from fasting, which I gave up by lunchtime that day.
- 4:13Just so you don't think your pastor is some super good
- 4:16Christian or anything like that. I'm just, I'm one of you.
- 4:19But it was in that moment of my stomach grumbling that God
- 4:26shined a light on what was really going on in my heart.
- 4:32He whispered to me, He said you're, you were looking talking
- 4:37about the night before. He said you were looking for
- 4:39relief. What you needed was restoration.
- 4:46You were looking for relief, but what you needed was restoration.
- 4:52Restoration. And I remember the idea of a
- 4:57quote that I had read before, and so I found it in a book.
- 5:03Google's an amazing thing. Found exact quote I was looking
- 5:07for. John Eldridge writes this.
- 5:09He says relief is momentary. It's checking out, numbing,
- 5:16sedating yourself. Television is relief.
- 5:20Eating a bag of cookies is relief.
- 5:23Tequila is relief. And let's be honest, relief is
- 5:29what we reach for because it's immediate and usually within our
- 5:35grasp. Most of us turn there when what
- 5:41we really need is restoration, Friends, there are going to be
- 5:48days when we need to be restored, right?
- 5:53There going to be days, maybe even weeks, where it just seems
- 5:57like the things keep piling up one on top of the other, like
- 6:02you can't quite get ahead. Days that drag us down and beat
- 6:07us up. But when what we really need is
- 6:13restoration, when we often go looking for relief.
- 6:20You see, we want to be distracted from our problems,
- 6:24right? We we want to escape from what
- 6:27feels like normal life. And so we often turn to
- 6:31entertainment for relief, right? Not realizing our need for
- 6:36restoration or not realizing that they're not actually the
- 6:40same thing. Now, before I go any further,
- 6:46let me just say that entertainment is not inherently
- 6:50wrong. I'm not trying to say that we
- 6:52should go back to the days when the church said you shouldn't go
- 6:55to the movie theater or own a radio or ATV or anything like
- 7:01that. But it is worth noting that that
- 7:05in all of our human needs, entertainment isn't really one
- 7:11of them, right? It's only purpose is for our
- 7:16pleasure. And again, pleasure isn't wrong.
- 7:18God gave us that ability to feel pleasure, and he gave us things
- 7:23that are pleasurable. But entertainment's not a need,
- 7:30and entertainment doesn't actually produce or achieve
- 7:34anything for us beyond that pleasure.
- 7:41At the same time, though, the content of the entertainment
- 7:45that we choose to consume is constantly forming us
- 7:51spiritually. The question is whether we'll
- 7:55recognize that or not. It may not be explicit spiritual
- 8:00formation, but that is its effect, especially over time.
- 8:08So this morning I I want to look at a few passages of scripture
- 8:12that could inform how we engage with entertainment and
- 8:18ultimately how we choose to spend our time, attention, and
- 8:23energy. Because that's really what we're
- 8:24talking about when we're talking about our entertainment choices,
- 8:27right? What are we giving our time, our
- 8:29attention and our energy to now, these passages we're going to
- 8:36look at this morning, they're they're not specifically about
- 8:40entertainment. The authors of the Bible could
- 8:44never have imagined a television or the Internet or what have
- 8:49you. And Paul didn't write to the
- 8:51Romans about whether they should attend the gladiator fights or
- 8:56the Greeks in Corinth about going to the theater.
- 9:01But I believe the principles that we see in these passages
- 9:05can be applied to the things we're thinking about when it
- 9:09comes to our entertainment. And so the first passage I want
- 9:13to look at this morning is that passage from Ephesians chapter 5
- 9:17that Jeremy read for us this morning beginning in verse
- 9:22eight. I'm not going to read this one
- 9:24again, but I'll read some others as we go on.
- 9:27But this passage that Jeremy read for us in this part of
- 9:30Ephesians, Paul is talking about the differences in the way that
- 9:34non Christians and Christians live their lives, right?
- 9:39It shouldn't look the same. Spoiler alert, Paul calls us to
- 9:46live differently than the world lives, or differently from the
- 9:50way that we ourselves used to live before we came to know
- 9:55Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Paul says we're to find out what
- 9:59actually pleases God. We're to have nothing to do with
- 10:04the deeds of the darkness, and we're to be careful how we live.
- 10:12This is how our lives are to look now that we are children of
- 10:18light, as Paul calls us here in this, in this passage.
- 10:23And as Christians, I think we get that when it comes to our
- 10:27behavior, right? The things we do, we know what
- 10:31we're not supposed to do. We we know what we're supposed
- 10:34to do. We know we're not supposed to
- 10:35lie or steal or cheat or murder and on and on and on, right?
- 10:42But then how many times do we go home at the end of of a day, put
- 10:49on a show or a movie, read a book which glorifies the the
- 10:56very behaviors we know we're not supposed to do?
- 11:02How do we reconcile that with with not even mentioning what
- 11:06the disobedient do in secret, as Paul says here in this passage?
- 11:11How, What do we do with that? How do we reconcile who we used
- 11:19to be, the way the world lives, how we're called to live as a
- 11:24church, and the content we choose to consume as Christians?
- 11:36Second passage I want to bring to your attention this morning
- 11:39comes from First Corinthians chapter 10, beginning in verse
- 11:4523. Paul's writing here says I have
- 11:50the right to do anything you say, but not everything is
- 11:55beneficial. I have the right to do anything,
- 11:59but not everything is constructive.
- 12:02No one should seek their own good but the good of others.
- 12:05Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions
- 12:09of conscience. For the earth is the Lord's and
- 12:12everything in it. If an unbeliever invites you to
- 12:14a meal and you want to go, eat whatever's put before you
- 12:17without raising questions of conscience.
- 12:20But if someone says to you this has been offered in a sacrifice,
- 12:25then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and
- 12:28for the sake of conscience. I'm referring to the other
- 12:31person's conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being
- 12:34judged by another's conscience? If I take part in the meal with
- 12:37Thanksgiving, why am I denounced because of something I thank God
- 12:40for? So whether you eat or drink or
- 12:43whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
- 12:50Here Paul is, is pushing back on a common piece of pop
- 12:55philosophy, right? I have the right to do anything.
- 13:02He's pushing back on those who would say, specifically within
- 13:05the church, that because of Jesus's defeat of sin and the
- 13:11forgiveness that he offers us, we're now free to live however
- 13:15we want, right? This was called antinomianism.
- 13:20Put that down for your little heresy checklist.
- 13:23Anti nomianism, anti meaning law, Nomos meaning or antos
- 13:30meaning no, no, anti meaning no. And nomos meaning law no law.
- 13:42There's no law because we're under grace, right?
- 13:46Wouldn't that be a great place to live?
- 13:47But it's just not true. They'd say things like I have
- 13:53the right to do anything. And Paul would say, yes, you do,
- 13:58but not everything is beneficial.
- 14:03Politics, well, maybe you do, but not everything is
- 14:08constructive. There is freedom for the
- 14:13believer. We're not tied into all the same
- 14:17things we were before we came to Christ.
- 14:21He's set us free from those things.
- 14:24But just because you can do everything doesn't mean you
- 14:30should, right? Not everything is actually
- 14:35helpful to us. On top of that, we don't want to
- 14:39use our own freedom in a way that harms the conscience of a
- 14:43brother or sister in Christ, as we was talking about here about
- 14:48the sacrifices and earlier in First Corinthians.
- 14:51In chapter 8, he says, in verses 9 to 13, he says, Be careful,
- 14:56however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a
- 15:02stumbling block to the weak. For if someone with a weak
- 15:06conscience sees you with all of your knowledge eating in an
- 15:09idol's temple, won't that person be emboldened to eat what's
- 15:12sacrificed to idols? So this weak brother or sister
- 15:15for whom Christ died is destroyed by your knowledge.
- 15:19When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak
- 15:24conscience, you sin against Christ.
- 15:27Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall
- 15:30into sin, I will never eat meat again so that I will not 'cause
- 15:35them to fall. Remember Paul also never got to
- 15:42Texas and had BBQ. Just say, but he's saying here
- 15:49that we don't want to be a stumbling block just because we
- 15:53have freedom, just because we have a right to do something.
- 15:57We don't want to be a stumbling block for those who might be
- 16:01weaker in their faith, who might not have experienced that same,
- 16:05that same freedom that we have experienced.
- 16:08And, and when we do these things and we drag people along with
- 16:11it, we actually sin against them and we sin against Christ when
- 16:17we exercise the freedom that they don't have.
- 16:21Now, again, these two passages are specifically speaking to
- 16:25dietary issues, whether a Christian could eat meat that
- 16:28had been previously sacrificed to an idol.
- 16:33And Paul's basic answer is, yeah, you can.
- 16:36It actually doesn't matter. Those idols don't have any
- 16:39power. You're set free by the God who's
- 16:43purchased you with his blood. But he tells the church you can
- 16:49eat whatever is put in front of you with a clear conscience.
- 16:52You go to someone's house, you don't know what happened with
- 16:54the meat before it got to the plate.
- 16:56Go ahead and eat it. It's no big deal.
- 16:59But if it's a big deal for somebody else in the room, if
- 17:05it's a big deal for the person that you're eating with, if it
- 17:08offends them, don't do it right. Love is the greater principle.
- 17:17Love is the higher value over our individual freedoms.
- 17:26So you want to watch a movie with a friend?
- 17:28You find out they have a conviction that that maybe they
- 17:31shouldn't, as a Christian, watch movies that are rated R OK,
- 17:37Don't. Don't try to convince them that
- 17:38it's OK for Christians to watch rated R movies.
- 17:42Choose to love them. Watch something rated PG,
- 17:46something rated G. Your brother or sister's
- 17:50conscience is more important than your freedom.
- 17:56Choose the way of love, which by the way, is also often the way
- 18:04of self denial, right? In this theories on denying
- 18:09ourselves, sometimes choosing to love the people around us, the
- 18:14people we're in community with, the people we're walking with in
- 18:17fellowship. We have to choose to deny
- 18:20ourselves. We have to choose to deny a
- 18:22right we have, a freedom we feel OK about.
- 18:26We deny it for the sake of love. We can love others in our lives
- 18:34by laying down those rights and freedoms, particularly but not
- 18:39exclusively in those areas where we don't have the same freedoms,
- 18:44regardless of the reason as to why that's the case, right?
- 18:48We don't have to evaluate someone else's reason or
- 18:52conviction or their conscience in order to respect it.
- 18:59One more passage, because we still have communion this
- 19:02morning too. Don't worry, I haven't
- 19:04forgotten. In Philippians 48, Paul says
- 19:10whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
- 19:17whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable,
- 19:21if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such
- 19:26things. Does that describe the content
- 19:33of the entertainment that we're choosing to consume?
- 19:38Does it describe the things that we're giving our time,
- 19:43attention, and energy to? If not, maybe we need to
- 19:52reconsider that. If not, maybe we need to deny
- 20:00ourselves because those things are shaping us.
- 20:06They're forming us spiritually, whether we acknowledge it or
- 20:12not. Back in that passage from
- 20:19Ephesians 5 that we started with, towards the end, in verses
- 20:2415 to 16, Paul calls us. To make the most of every
- 20:32opportunity we have, he says verse 15.
- 20:34He says be very careful then how you live, not as unwise but as
- 20:39wise, making the most of every opportunity because the days are
- 20:46evil. So when you sit down like I did
- 20:51on Tuesday night to watch something, or you pick up a book
- 20:57to read, or you grab your computer or your phone to scroll
- 21:02the Internet or social media, are you making the most of every
- 21:10opportunity? Or in 1st Corinthians 10, that
- 21:16passage we were reading, Paul says.
- 21:17So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for
- 21:22the glory of God. Does our use of time, does our
- 21:28entertainment, does it match that verse?
- 21:34Again, it's not wrong to watch a ball game or show, to read a
- 21:38novel, but are we making the most of that opportunity?
- 21:43Are we doing that for the glory of God?
- 21:46Maybe we need to ask ourselves, is there somewhere in my life
- 21:52that I need to deny myself the pleasure of relief for the sake
- 21:59of God's glory or for the sake of a brother or sister and what
- 22:06God is doing in their life? Or even to cooperate with the
- 22:11transformation that God wants to work in my own life to bring his
- 22:16Kingdom in the world in me. Because what's it mean to bring
- 22:20the Kingdom of God in this world, right?
- 22:23It means to extend the realm of God's effective will, right?
- 22:29That's a very technical definition, right, to extend the
- 22:34realm of God's effective will. But it means expanding the area
- 22:39where people say yes to Jesus, right?
- 22:44And that starts in US. And so as we move into our time
- 22:54of Holy Communion this morning, we encourage you to do a little
- 23:00inventory of your entertainment and how you choose to use your
- 23:09time. And Aaron, I'm going to put you
- 23:13on some. Will you come up and and just
- 23:15play a little bit in a minute? What are the things that you're
- 23:22choosing to consume for entertainment?
- 23:25What's the content of the shows you watch, the books you read,
- 23:28the websites you visit, the podcast you listen to, the pages
- 23:33that you scroll through? Are they true, noble, right.
- 23:39Pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, praiseworthy.
- 23:47Are they helping you to make the most of every opportunity to
- 23:51join God in His work in the world?
- 23:55Can you honestly say that you enjoy them for the glory of God?
- 24:00And again, I'm not saying don't. Don't do entertainment.
- 24:09There's something glorious about sitting at a ball game with a
- 24:12good friend or with one of my boys.
- 24:18What about your brothers and sisters?
- 24:22The freedoms that you've received in Christ, Are you
- 24:25actually willing to lay them down for the sake of your
- 24:29brother or sister? Or are you secretly, or maybe
- 24:34not so secretly, judging them for not being where you are?
- 24:42Maybe this morning Jesus is speaking to you and and he's
- 24:45inviting you to experience not just relief, but real
- 24:52restoration. Maybe he wants to be the one you
- 24:57turn to at the end of a long day rather than pulling out the
- 25:01carton of ice cream with a bottle of wine, turning on the
- 25:05TV, or what have you. Maybe rather than checking out
- 25:10for a while, he wants you to check in with him.
- 25:17Maybe he's asking you. Would you deny that right you
- 25:22have. Would you deny yourself that
- 25:25freedom for the sake of what He's doing in US and wants to do
- 25:31through us for the sake of the world?
- 25:38I want to invite you just where you are before we move into our
- 25:43communion liturgy and all that, remembering the sacrifice that
- 25:48Jesus made so that we could be set free from the power of sin
- 25:53and death. Would you ask God, just bow your
- 25:59head where you are? Jesus, is there anything you
- 26:04need to speak to me about my entertainment, about my time,
- 26:10about my energy, my attentions, the things I'm giving myself to?
