- 0:01In Acts chapter 9. We see a man who is in desperate
- 0:08need of change. And we're going to get to solve
- 0:13course. We know him more lovingly as the
- 0:17Apostle Paul, but we know, when were originally introduced to
- 0:19him in scripture. He is a man that was going in
- 0:22the opposite direction of where he needed to be going a man who
- 0:25is desperately in need of radical change and you may not
- 0:31be as in need of change right now, as saw was in Acts chapter
- 0:389, but I have a feeling that all of us in some Aspect of our
- 0:42life. We begin this new year in
- 0:46desperate need of change. I know most of us, share a
- 0:51similar experience when one year ends and a new year begins.
- 0:55A lot of us go through a period of self reflection and
- 0:57contemplation. What do I want to do differently
- 1:00in the coming year that I did in the past?
- 1:02What are some things I need to change about myself in the
- 1:04coming year from the ways that I have been doing things in the
- 1:08past and a lot of us spend a little bit of time going through
- 1:11Through a period of reflection and introspection and
- 1:15determining. If there are things that we need
- 1:17to change in our life and all of us, If we're honest with
- 1:19ourselves, have something have something because we're human
- 1:23beings and we're imperfect. And we're always going to be
- 1:26imperfect. As long as we're in the flesh.
- 1:27There's something that we can do better.
- 1:29There's something that we can improve upon.
- 1:30There's maybe something that we need to completely and radically
- 1:34change. Here's the good news.
- 1:38If change was impossible, then God would not have made it an
- 1:43essential component of the Salvation process.
- 1:45We talked about a few weeks ago when we study Psalm 51, we
- 1:50talked about the biblical definition of repentance.
- 1:53And when you understand repentance, in the way that the
- 1:57Bible defines that word, the way that the Bible defines that act,
- 2:01I believe it is indisputable, that, that is the most difficult
- 2:04part of the Salvation process. It's interesting to me that In
- 2:08the religious World. A lot of people get hung up on
- 2:11baptism. Is it essential?
- 2:12Is it not? And there's this big argument
- 2:14and debate on the role that baptism plays in Salvation?
- 2:18Baptism is a walk in the park is a piece of cake is about the
- 2:24easiest thing you can possibly do in comparison to repenting
- 2:28the way that the Bible defines repentance and what's
- 2:32interesting and ironic is in the religious world.
- 2:34There's not a debate about whether or not repentance is
- 2:36essential for salvation, you talk To anyone who claims to be
- 2:40a bible-believing Christian and you ask them.
- 2:42Do you believe you have to repent in order to go to heaven
- 2:44and you will hardly ever run into someone who says no, I
- 2:47don't believe you have to do that.
- 2:49Almost everyone universally as part of the religious community
- 2:54that believes in. Jesus Christ.
- 2:56And believe the Bible is the word of God.
- 2:57There's not going to be any debate about whether or not
- 2:59repentance is essential for salvation.
- 3:01If you repent the way, the Bible defines, repentance repentance,
- 3:04is way harder to do than baptism.
- 3:08In fact, most of what's involved in baptism, is somebody doing it
- 3:11for you, right? Baptism, is in large part, a
- 3:14very passive act and I don't understand why the religious
- 3:18world we get. So caught up in baptism being a
- 3:20work. It's not anything you're doing
- 3:22to earn your salvation, but repentance repentance is a
- 3:26change. It literally means the word that
- 3:30the Greek word that is translated, as repent of New
- 3:32Testament. It means to change one's mind or
- 3:35purpose to change the inner. Man, it is a complete and
- 3:39revolutionary change from the inside out.
- 3:42That's what David realized he needed to do.
- 3:44When he wrote Psalm 51. He realized he needed a radical
- 3:49revolutionary change from the inside out.
- 3:52You desire, repentance, you desire, a change in the inward,
- 3:55most Parts David said, in that song.
- 3:59And so of change was impossible because I know what some people
- 4:02do is you get in that new year and those bad habits start
- 4:04creeping back in, and you say, it's just going to be just like,
- 4:07it's In the last 20 years. I just I'm not able to change
- 4:11this particular Behavior, or I'm not able to rid myself of this
- 4:14particular habit. It's just too difficult is too
- 4:17tough change is not impossible. If it were God would not have
- 4:23made it such a huge part of the Salvation process.
- 4:27Now, we understand when it comes to repentance, repentance is not
- 4:30just a change of mind. It's not just having this this
- 4:34mental exercise that you purchase put yourself through
- 4:37repentance also involves a change of action.
- 4:40You remember, Luke, chapter 3, when John was preaching,
- 4:46repentance for the remission repentance, baptism for the
- 4:49remission of sins. When he was preaching this
- 4:52concept of repentance, there, were those who came out to see
- 4:54him in the wilderness and they said, what should we do?
- 4:57And John never responded to that question by.
- 5:00You don't need to do anything. He always responded with.
- 5:05Okay. Here's what you need to do.
- 5:09You remember on one occasion, the publicans who came out the
- 5:12tax collectors who came out to John, in the wilderness.
- 5:14They said, what should we do? He said, well, don't take from
- 5:17others more than you are legally authorized.
- 5:20To take. In other words, if you were
- 5:22practicing unscrupulous business practices in your work, then
- 5:26you're going to need to change that right now.
- 5:28Soldiers, came out to him and said to John, what should we do?
- 5:32And he said, do not treat the people that you have authority
- 5:37over those, that you were having to arrest or those that you have
- 5:40to deal with. Don't treat them unfairly.
- 5:43Don't treat them in ways that violate their rights be content
- 5:49with your wages. So he's telling them you're
- 5:52going to have to change. If you've got a certain way in
- 5:54which you go about your job that involves unethical behavior and
- 5:57moral Behavior, going to change that right now.
- 6:00If you're someone who has a bad attitude about your
- 6:03compensation, for your job, you're going to need to change
- 6:05that attitude. Right now everyone who came out
- 6:08to John and asked that question. What should we do as he was
- 6:11preaching this sermon of repentance.
- 6:14He said, here's something you've got to do.
- 6:16So John never just said, well, it's just a mental exercise.
- 6:20It's not anything that you're going.
- 6:21To do physically, it's not any visible change.
- 6:24You're going to have to make repentance is all in the mind.
- 6:27Well, repentance begins in the mind, but then it leads to a
- 6:31change of action. Now, let's go back to Acts
- 6:34chapter 9 for a moment. And let's look at that, man.
- 6:37Saul, who we? Of course.
- 6:41Refer to. Now as the Apostle Paul.
- 6:44This was a man. Who when we read about him on
- 6:47the road to Damascus, getting ready to persecute a rest and
- 6:51harass Christians. Those who are followers of Jesus
- 6:53Christ. This was a man who was in
- 6:55desperate need of radical change.
- 6:57In the fact. The matter is the Apostle Paul
- 7:00known as Saul and Acts chapter 9 needed to change.
- 7:03Almost everything about who he was.
- 7:08In the passage that Brooks read for us a few moments ago and
- 7:10Philippians chapter 3, Paul tells a little bit about
- 7:13himself. And he begins before he gets
- 7:17into the things that you see on the screen.
- 7:19He begins by saying if anybody has a right to be confident in
- 7:22their flesh. In other words, if anybody has a
- 7:25right to boast about their pedigree or their
- 7:28accomplishments, physically speaking.
- 7:31Nobody has more things to brag about or be confident in from a
- 7:35fleshly perspective than me. And so Paul starts listing off
- 7:40these things circumcised on the eighth day of the nation of
- 7:43Israel, The Tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews.
- 7:47What does that mean? What does Paul mean when he says
- 7:49a Hebrew of Hebrews commentators?
- 7:52Give different perspectives on what that means.
- 7:55It may mean the fact that Paul has just told us right before
- 7:58that. He is of The Tribe of Benjamin
- 8:00and maybe that Paul spent a lot of time on ancestry.com and was
- 8:03able to track his family tree all the way back to Abraham.
- 8:08Well, it not on ancestry.com. But apparently Paul was able to
- 8:12trace his family tree through genealogical records all the way
- 8:16back to Abraham. So it may be that that Paul is
- 8:18saying, listen. I've got a pure Jewish bloodline
- 8:22that may be part of what he's talking about here.
- 8:24It may be. What Paul is talking about here
- 8:26is the fact that he was so proud of his Jewish ancestry of his
- 8:32Heritage of being a Hebrew that he Refrain from doing any of the
- 8:38things, many of his Brethren were doing and embracing the
- 8:41Greek culture. It may be that while some of his
- 8:44Jewish Brethren spoke Greek, is their primary language.
- 8:47Paul was not going to do that. Hebrew was the language of his
- 8:50forefathers. That's the language.
- 8:51He was going to speak those who were kind of assimilating
- 8:54integration culture during the time of Paul, who are maybe
- 8:57observing some of the Greek holidays, those who are
- 9:00practicing. Some of the Greek Customs who
- 9:02were allowing some of the Greek culture to Filtrate their lives.
- 9:07It maybe Paul is saying here. I have not embraced anything
- 9:11other than what is part of our Jewish Heritage, a Hebrew of the
- 9:15Hebrews. I speak Hebrew.
- 9:16I value the pentateuch value, the teachings of the Old
- 9:21Testament concerning the law. What does he say?
- 9:25Or concerning Zeal? Persecuting the church.
- 9:28He said he was a Pharisee concerning the law blameless.
- 9:31In other words, what Paul is saying about the law before his
- 9:35encounter? With Christ and the radical
- 9:37change that he went through in his heart.
- 9:39And his mind. He valued Above All Else, his
- 9:45bloodline his Heritage, the god of the Old Testament.
- 9:51The god of the law of Moses that law.
- 9:55He practiced it with Zeal with fervor.
- 9:58He tried to practice it to the utmost of his ability.
- 10:01And what does he say in verse 7 of Philippians, 3, but what
- 10:04things were gain to me. So, Paul put great stock in the
- 10:08fact that he was a Hebrew of Hebrews circumcised on the
- 10:12eighth day of the tribe of Benjamin, a Pharisee, a devout
- 10:16follower of the law of Moses, those things that were gain to
- 10:21Me. So Paul took great pride to
- 10:24Great Value in his physical lineage in the Jewish blood that
- 10:30ran through his veins. And now when he encounters Jesus
- 10:35Christ on the road to Damascus, he shortly learns after that
- 10:40that bloodline in this new covenant.
- 10:44Bloodline. When you're following Jesus,
- 10:46Christ means nothing. That there is now a spiritual
- 10:51family that Jesus has now brought together, Jew, and Greek
- 10:56Jew, and Gentile. And there's no distinguishing
- 11:00between those who were of Jewish Heritage and those who are not.
- 11:05And so Paul is having change everything.
- 11:08About the things that he is held dear for his entire life up
- 11:12until his Encounter With Jesus Christ.
- 11:15And so, Paul is having to go through a radical change of mind
- 11:21of heart that led to a change, of course, in action and
- 11:25behavior. So what does he say in verse 8,
- 11:28in Philippians, 3 for his sake, I have suffered.
- 11:32Notice how its worded their I have suffered loss.
- 11:34Do you think he was easy for Paul for everything that he had
- 11:39held dear for everything that he had valued?
- 11:41He had based his identity. On the his love for his
- 11:47Brethren, his pedigree, his lineage, his forefathers.
- 11:52The law that they had been given by God, through Moses, all of
- 11:57these things. He based his very identity.
- 11:59He based his value. He based his sense of worth on
- 12:01these things. I have suffered the loss of all
- 12:04these things and he didn't just start there or stop there.
- 12:09He says I count them as rubbish. As waste.
- 12:15As refuse not only do I no longer value those things.
- 12:22I view them as being something, worth discarding, throwing away
- 12:27in comparison to gaining Christ. Paul went through this radical
- 12:37change of mind and heart that as you, well know, as you continue
- 12:41to read through the scriptures, LED through a radical change of
- 12:44action and behavior. I don't think there's anything
- 12:48that you were holding deer in your life right now.
- 12:53That is of more value to you. As the things that Paul held
- 12:59dear to him, that he let go of, so that he could gain Christ.
- 13:07And so if you're in need of radical change this morning, I
- 13:09can tell you this. It's not impossible and we have
- 13:13precedent in scripture of those that needed to make incredibly
- 13:18radical changes in their life and successfully did.
- 13:21So in order to gain Christ, their last couple of moments
- 13:25this morning, as we want time for our elders to make a report
- 13:29to us this morning. I just want to ask us a couple
- 13:31of quick questions. Are there things that you need
- 13:34to change in 2020? If you've taken a look at
- 13:40yourself, done some time of reflection, introspection of you
- 13:43come to the conclusion that in 2020.
- 13:46You'll be best served by changing your priorities.
- 13:49Matthew 6, verse 33. Jesus says seek first, the
- 13:52kingdom of God, and his righteousness and all these
- 13:54things. The things they had talked about
- 13:55earlier food, clothing, and shelter and the preceding
- 13:57verses. All these things will be added
- 13:59unto you. But seek first, the kingdom of
- 14:03God, maybe there's a reordering a restructuring of your
- 14:06priorities that needs to take place. 20/20.
- 14:08Maybe that is the radical change.
- 14:10You need to make maybe you need to change your attitude.
- 14:15Maybe you're struggling with bitterness.
- 14:17Maybe you're struggling with apathy, indifference.
- 14:21Maybe you're struggling with some habitual sin, that has
- 14:24become a slave master to you. Maybe there is a radical
- 14:29revolutionary change of attitude that you need to go through in
- 14:342020. Maybe you need to make a change
- 14:37regarding Bible, study prayer, life.
- 14:40Maybe you're not that digit. Diligent student of the Bible
- 14:42that Paul instructed, Timothy and through that instruction
- 14:46instructs, all of us to be. As we spend time in the word of
- 14:51God. Maybe your prayer life has
- 14:53become stale as become stagnant. Paul tells us in second
- 14:57Thessalonians 5 and verse 17 to pray without ceasing and in
- 15:00other words to make it just something that you find
- 15:03yourself. Habitually going to in the good
- 15:05times and the bad where your mind immediately is taking you,
- 15:09the things that you're going through out your life throughout
- 15:11the day. You're finding yourself in
- 15:13prayer to God because it's just your go-to when things go.
- 15:17Well, thank you, Lord. For that judicial.
- 15:19When you're struggling with something and Lord.
- 15:20I need your help your strength to get through this next hour.
- 15:25This next thing, when I'm about to have to go through in my
- 15:27life. Maybe your your dedication to
- 15:31God's word into prayer becomes stagnant.
- 15:33It's a change. Need to make this year.
- 15:36Maybe you need to develop a new craving.
- 15:40We're going to explain that here in just a second.
- 15:42I've been doing some reading recently on on habits, on where
- 15:48they come from, how we form them.
- 15:51How can we change them? There has been an extensive
- 15:55amount of study and research that has been done.
- 16:00Not just in the the psychological Community been in
- 16:02the medical community concerning habits, and we don't have time
- 16:06to get into all that this morning, but there's just one
- 16:08aspect of habits that I Reflect on just for a moment and that is
- 16:13what fuels, our habitual activities.
- 16:18Involves a craving that when we think of this this phrase, or
- 16:22this term, craving lot of times, think about regarding food, We
- 16:27crave a donut or We crave Pizza. We crave that kind of thing
- 16:30craving is can exist in a lot of different ways.
- 16:32They don't necessarily have to do anything with food.
- 16:35It may be that you're struggling with gossip and you crave.
- 16:43The feeling that you get when you hear new information,
- 16:47especially if it's information of a negative standpoint about
- 16:54someone. And so you crave, the feeling
- 16:57that you get, when you hear new information, something that's
- 17:00scandalous. Something.
- 17:01That's maybe you're someone who you have this craving.
- 17:09For fulfilling the lust of the flesh.
- 17:13And you constantly are looking for ways to fuel that craving.
- 17:19There are some who crave exercise notice.
- 17:24I said, there are some I didn't make this a personal anecdote.
- 17:30There's some who crave exercise because they crave the feeling
- 17:34that they get either during or after.
- 17:38And so, what fuels a habit is a craving.
- 17:42Now, what those who have studied habits have found?
- 17:46Is that once your brain Embraces a habit?
- 17:53It is there from now on that. There's the bad news it never
- 17:57completely it goes so far into the inner workings of your brain
- 18:01that it's always there. But what scientists have found
- 18:05is is what you can do is develop new Cravings that crowd out the
- 18:10old ones. So if you have a craving that is
- 18:12- that is bad. That fuels your desire to engage
- 18:17in Behavior, actions. Attitudes that are harmful to
- 18:21you, especially spiritually. What?
- 18:23Can do is develop new Cravings that your brain will then use as
- 18:28energy to focus upon crowding, out those old bad negative ones.
- 18:34And so those those old habits never go away is kind of view it
- 18:37this way. There may be a song from your
- 18:40childhood that you love that. You listen to all the time.
- 18:45But maybe you have 20 30 years that go by and you don't hear
- 18:49that song a single time and then all of a sudden that song is
- 18:55played some where the song comes on the radio.
- 18:58You've not heard it in 20 or 30 years, but your love of the
- 19:01song, Never disappeared. All of a sudden, you're singing
- 19:05the words with the song, you know, the tune, you know, the
- 19:07words, you're snapping, your fingers, you're tapping your
- 19:09foot. You've not heard in 20 or 30
- 19:11years, but your love of the song is still there.
- 19:15It never was removed from your mind is the same way with things
- 19:19that become habitual in our lives.
- 19:21They never completely go away, but we can do, it may be the
- 19:25reason why you didn't listen to that song over 20 or 30 years.
- 19:28Is you began listening to other songs or you began doing other
- 19:34things during that time where you used to spend time,
- 19:36listening to the radio. And so you developed other
- 19:39things, that took the time that used to be devoted to listening
- 19:42to an enjoying that particular song.
- 19:45And so, what we are capable of doing as human beings is though,
- 19:48we cannot completely remove something that we allowed to
- 19:50become habitual in our life. We can crowd it out with other
- 19:55things. So that our mind is now focused
- 19:59on those new habits. Those new behaviors and there's
- 20:01no room left. Now, for our mind to spend time
- 20:04on that habit, that's deep down in the recesses of our mind.
- 20:09Now, I want us to go back as we close this morning to Psalm
- 20:1142:1. It's a verse that's been turned
- 20:16into music and we sing it regularly As the deer pants for
- 20:19streams of water. So my soul Longs after you and
- 20:23other words. So, my soul, craves you.
- 20:28You may remember if you were at the family Retreat, I believe it
- 20:31was last year. We talked about this particular
- 20:33passage and we talked about dear.
- 20:36And the fact that deer get most of the water that they need from
- 20:40their diet. So if you see a deer that is
- 20:43guzzling water, from a water source, like a river or a lake
- 20:47or a stream. It means that that deer was near
- 20:49the point of death. It needed water, so desperately.
- 20:54So sheds, new light on that verse where As the deer pants
- 20:57for the water if a deer is going to water source to drink.
- 21:01From that water source. It means that it has gotten to
- 21:04the point where it is dehydrated, where it is near
- 21:06death and it needs water more than it needs.
- 21:10Anything else? And that deer knows I've got to
- 21:12get somewhere. I'm not getting enough water
- 21:14from my diet. I've got to get somewhere and
- 21:16drink if I want to live. And so what the psalmist is
- 21:22saying, we need to develop this craving in the same way that a
- 21:25deer when he gets in crisis mode and has to go to a water source.
- 21:29Because it's near the point of death.
- 21:30We need to have that same craving for God.
- 21:35That same craving for a relationship with him for time,
- 21:38spent with him, with time, spent with his people.
- 21:41And so it may be that you've got Cravings in your life that lead
- 21:45to destructive behaviors. You can replace those starting
- 21:51today. With Cravings that are more
- 21:54wholesome. With Cravings that are more
- 21:57beneficial to you spiritually, physically emotionally.
- 22:03It's not impossible. Is it easy?
- 22:06No. Is it impossible?
- 22:10Absolutely, not. God, can help us change if we
- 22:14allow him. To be the necessary change in
- 22:19our life. Maybe you're here this morning.
- 22:21You're not a child of God. We pray that you'll accept the
- 22:24Lord's, invitation begin the new year and the best Note possible
- 22:27becoming a child of the Lord by faith repenting of your sins,
- 22:31confessing Christ being baptized into Christ, having your sins
- 22:34washed away coming out of that water and New Creation.
- 22:37If you've done that, but you've strayed and need to come back
- 22:40home or you just need encouragement.
- 22:42We'd love to pray within for you now is to get
