Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, it is Fox and this is the iHeart So
- 0:02Speaker 1: Cal Show. Okay so.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Project Angel Food their mission to nourish the health and
- 0:06Speaker 2: spirit of people facing critical and life threatening illnesses by
- 0:11Speaker 2: preparing and delivering medically tailored meals with love, care and dignity.
- 0:16Speaker 2: And they've been doing it all these years, since nineteen
- 0:19Speaker 2: eighty nine, and now thousands of Angelina's who are in
- 0:23Speaker 2: need rely on Project Angel Food. So thank goodness, they're expanding,
- 0:28Speaker 2: and they've got a big fundraiser coming up on the
- 0:29Speaker 2: twenty seventh, their Angel Awards, and we are hoping you're
- 0:33Speaker 2: going to join in and help make the magic happen.
- 0:36Speaker 2: They're always need of volunteers, always need of drivers, so
- 0:39Speaker 2: many ways to be a part of this incredible organization.
- 0:41Speaker 2: So let's dive in as I've been a fan of
- 0:44Speaker 2: theirs for a long time, a fan and a volunteer
- 0:46Speaker 2: for a long time, especially since their CEO is so
- 0:50Speaker 2: wonderful in my longtime. Dear dear friend, Richard au Hi Richard.
- 0:55Speaker 3: By Lisa, Oh my god, this is horrible that the
- 1:00Speaker 3: way we get together is through doing radio.
- 1:03Speaker 1: It's horrible.
- 1:04Speaker 3: I don't even see each other. You're so busy it's
- 1:07Speaker 3: not horrible.
- 1:08Speaker 2: It just means sad that we have to keep it
- 1:10Speaker 2: clean because you know, we are on seven the shows
- 1:12Speaker 2: on seven iHeart stations, so.
- 1:14Speaker 1: We have to keep it clean.
- 1:16Speaker 3: That's keep it clean.
- 1:16Speaker 1: That's the only horrible part. But always joy to talk
- 1:20Speaker 1: to you.
- 1:21Speaker 2: And you know, when I'm not volunteering there, I feel
- 1:23Speaker 2: like I worked there already. You know, my boyfriend, the
- 1:26Speaker 2: love of my life has been has been actually working
- 1:29Speaker 2: with you more so than voluntearing since the fires. God
- 1:32Speaker 2: bless him, and thank you for letting him deliver meals
- 1:35Speaker 2: for his mental health.
- 1:36Speaker 1: It's been very key to keep our family going, so
- 1:39Speaker 1: thank you for that.
- 1:41Speaker 3: He's wonderful. He's just like he's won the heart of
- 1:46Speaker 3: the staff and especially the clients. Yeah, he's just going
- 1:53Speaker 3: delivering and connecting and doing a great job.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Thank you well.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Him.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Working at Project Angel Food has been very healing. And
- 2:03Speaker 2: it's nice to have a job. Not everyone's job has
- 2:05Speaker 2: a mission like yours does. And what a great opportunity
- 2:09Speaker 2: for people listening right now to be a part of it.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I know you rely heavily on volunteers to work in
- 2:15Speaker 2: the kitchen, to drive the vans, deliver the food.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I mean, the need is so great.
- 2:19Speaker 2: That's why I think it is you' rais enough money
- 2:21Speaker 2: for this new expansion that's happening.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Yeah, this is incredible. It's the biggest project we have
- 2:29Speaker 3: undertaken in the history of Project Change of Food in
- 2:34Speaker 3: thirty six years. So it is a thirty thousand square
- 2:40Speaker 3: foot campus. We will have two buildings, all of this
- 2:45Speaker 3: impact in the heart of Hollywood. We are doubling down
- 2:48Speaker 3: on Hollywood. One building is going to be a brand
- 2:52Speaker 3: new food production kitchen facility that is set to open
- 2:58Speaker 3: in time for chrismas us. How amazing is that projecting
- 3:04Speaker 3: into Food's Christmas gift to Los Angeles.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah, we got to do a little hard hat tour
- 3:08Speaker 2: and got a preview and we were just like.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Wow, yeah, what did you think?
- 3:14Speaker 2: I just was so impressed by what you're doing there
- 3:16Speaker 2: in Hollywood. And because you were able to raise the
- 3:19Speaker 2: funds because of so many generous people who donated and
- 3:22Speaker 2: the people that you were reached out to, because you
- 3:25Speaker 2: guys are very well connected. Because of the money we
- 3:27Speaker 2: were able to raise through a number of ways. My gosh,
- 3:30Speaker 2: You're just gonna be able to feed so many more
- 3:33Speaker 2: people with the larger food prep areas and the bigger sinks,
- 3:37Speaker 2: the massive freezers, I mean, just so much more room
- 3:41Speaker 2: to do more and feed more.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Absolutely, we're going to be able to triple the amount
- 3:46Speaker 3: of people we serve because right now, I was just
- 3:50Speaker 3: speaking to our receptionist, Jamie, and she said, we are
- 3:54Speaker 3: getting more phone calls because some organizations have had to
- 3:59Speaker 3: sh shut down because of funding cuts, So meals on wheels.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Other organizations are struggling, are struggling, and people are coming
- 4:09Speaker 3: to us saying we need help, we need food, We're sick,
- 4:14Speaker 3: we're hungry, can you help us? So the need is
- 4:19Speaker 3: growing and we're one organization that needs to continue to
- 4:24Speaker 3: keep operating because you and I both know food is
- 4:30Speaker 3: not an option.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Well, and especially when we're talking about the people that
- 4:34Speaker 2: you're feeding. So breakdown because I mean, since this began
- 4:38Speaker 2: in eighty nine, twenty million plus meals have been delivered
- 4:42Speaker 2: to those living with cancer, diabetes, cones of heart failure,
- 4:47Speaker 2: HIV and a's and other life writing illnesses. A breakdown
- 4:50Speaker 2: the types of people I just mentioned who you take
- 4:53Speaker 2: care because, like you said, more people are calling, more
- 4:55Speaker 2: people are applying. If you're listening to this program, and
- 4:58Speaker 2: you know of someone who is sick and would like.
- 5:00Speaker 1: To apply, This could be such a.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Game changer for them and help them in so many ways.
- 5:05Speaker 2: They can apply right now at angelfood dot org. But
- 5:09Speaker 2: talk about the people that you serve, Richard.
- 5:12Speaker 3: The people we serve are the people who are often forgotten.
- 5:17Speaker 3: They are the people who if you have a neighbor
- 5:20Speaker 3: who never comes out of their home, who always has
- 5:24Speaker 3: their blind straw, and you wonder what's going on in there.
- 5:29Speaker 3: What's going on is they may be attached to an
- 5:32Speaker 3: oxygen machine, they may be in a wheelchair, they may
- 5:36Speaker 3: be bed bound, or they may have some other illness
- 5:41Speaker 3: that's keeping them in there and isolated. And those are
- 5:46Speaker 3: the people you know. When you and I get sick,
- 5:50Speaker 3: everyone calls, Can I bring you a cup of chicken soup?
- 5:53Speaker 3: Can I come visit you? If you're sick for a week,
- 5:58Speaker 3: some of those calls stop coming. Then if you're sick
- 6:01Speaker 3: for a month, forget it. If you're sick for a year,
- 6:05Speaker 3: no one's calling you. Our clients have been sick for
- 6:09Speaker 3: six months, a year or even longer. Were their new friends,
- 6:14Speaker 3: were their new family. We're the constant in their life
- 6:19Speaker 3: every single week, we are there delivering meals. I'm going
- 6:23Speaker 3: to tell you a story. We have a client in Altadena.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Her name is Warna, ninety years old with dementia and
- 6:31Speaker 3: I think she has diabetes as well. So she lost
- 6:36Speaker 3: her house in the Altadena fire. Since January seventh, she
- 6:42Speaker 3: has moved seven times.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I can't even imagine. That's terrible.
- 6:47Speaker 3: This is a woman with dementia, she doesn't recognize her surroundings.
- 6:54Speaker 3: But guess what each of those seven times, Project Angel
- 6:58Speaker 3: Food has delivered meals to her in her new homes
- 7:03Speaker 3: and it has been the same delivery driver, Samantha, and
- 7:07Speaker 3: she recognizes Samantha to one constant.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the bond, you know.
- 7:14Speaker 2: I just know from volunteering to the bond that you
- 7:17Speaker 2: make with so many of these sweet clients. And like
- 7:20Speaker 2: Richard said, many people are alone, and sometimes you're the
- 7:23Speaker 2: only visitor or you're the only it's sad to say
- 7:27Speaker 2: only friend, you know, and that, but that bond is
- 7:29Speaker 2: so special, and sometimes they want they're a little chatty
- 7:31Speaker 2: and they're kind of excited sometimes to have.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Someone at the door.
- 7:35Speaker 2: And of course you're bringing their meals for a week,
- 7:37Speaker 2: so you're giving the gift of food and your company
- 7:40Speaker 2: and your love and your kindness, and so many of
- 7:43Speaker 2: them could just see the appreciation and just to have
- 7:46Speaker 2: a moment or smile just kind of like lights up
- 7:49Speaker 2: the room for a second. And it's really special to
- 7:51Speaker 2: know that we have the power to do that. Being
- 7:54Speaker 2: part of the Project Angel Food family.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Yeah, it's she has something that's pretty special and incredible.
- 8:02Speaker 3: And it takes a special human being who wants to
- 8:06Speaker 3: do this kind of work. It takes someone who is selfless,
- 8:12Speaker 3: someone who says, I want to do something for someone
- 8:17Speaker 3: I don't know. I want to do something that makes
- 8:21Speaker 3: the world a better place. You know, if you're worried
- 8:26Speaker 3: about what's happening in the country and the state and
- 8:30Speaker 3: the city in the world, turn to Project Angel Food.
- 8:34Speaker 3: That's where you see goodness. That's where the best of
- 8:38Speaker 3: Los Angeles comes out.
- 8:40Speaker 2: And you see it too, and you feel it when
- 8:41Speaker 2: you volunteer in their kitchen. Right now, the kitchen, the kitchens,
- 8:44Speaker 2: it's a temporary location in Lincoln Heights and Lincoln Heights area,
- 8:47Speaker 2: but the vibe and the love is right there in
- 8:50Speaker 2: Lincoln Heights. And then eventually, right when the new campus opens,
- 8:52Speaker 2: we'll be able to move back over to a divine
- 8:55Speaker 2: near near Melrose. But essentially you feel just I don't know.
- 8:59Speaker 2: It's such a positive vibe in the kitchen, the people
- 9:02Speaker 2: that you connect with, loading up your car, loading up
- 9:05Speaker 2: the van. If you become a hired driver, and just
- 9:08Speaker 2: feeling good about what you're doing, you know, knowing that
- 9:10Speaker 2: you're helping people and truly making a difference in these
- 9:12Speaker 2: people's lives, it's a beautiful thing.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Yeah. And you know, especially during the fires, we had
- 9:20Speaker 3: eight thousand people, eight thousand reaching out to us saying
- 9:26Speaker 3: I want to do some good? Can I come? Volunteer
- 9:30Speaker 3: people came to the Lincoln Heights kitchen unannounced, said I'm
- 9:34Speaker 3: an extra hair pair of hands, can I come? So
- 9:37Speaker 3: when they saw the devastation, they didn't know what to do.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Maybe they couldn't donate money, but they could donate time.
- 9:47Speaker 3: And Annie Lennox came into our kitchen and she thanked
- 9:51Speaker 3: the staff and thanked the volunteers, and she said, Project
- 9:56Speaker 3: Angel Food turns helplessness into hope.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Amen.
- 10:02Speaker 2: You absolutely do. You currently prepare and hand deliver free,
- 10:05Speaker 2: medically tailored meals annually to more than seven thousand plus men,
- 10:10Speaker 2: women and children, and that's about twenty eight hundred any
- 10:14Speaker 2: given day, and all the neighborhoods all over Los Angeles
- 10:19Speaker 2: County and it's huge right LA County and then some oh.
- 10:22Speaker 3: We do all four thousand separate under square miles of
- 10:27Speaker 3: LA County. So we're in Hollywood, we go. I was
- 10:30Speaker 3: just talking to one of our drivers yesterday. I said,
- 10:33Speaker 3: where were you today? He said, I was in Palmdale.
- 10:37Speaker 3: We go all the way to Palmdale. Took him an
- 10:40Speaker 3: hour and a half to get there. Then he started
- 10:43Speaker 3: delivering to forty people in Palmdale, then another two hours
- 10:47Speaker 3: to get back because he's in rush hour traffic. So
- 10:50Speaker 3: that's what we do. Even though it's farther. People need
- 10:56Speaker 3: our help there, so that's where we go. We go
- 10:58Speaker 3: to Long Beach, go to Santa Monica and also Pomona.
- 11:04Speaker 3: We're all LA County, every city you can think of,
- 11:08Speaker 3: Huntington Beach, boil Heights, you know, all the way to
- 11:13Speaker 3: the valley, the entire valley. Our biggest coverage area is
- 11:17Speaker 3: the downtown area, mid city and south South LA. There's
- 11:21Speaker 3: a lot of neat there and.
- 11:23Speaker 2: They are delivering delicious, medically tailored meals that are flash
- 11:26Speaker 2: frozen so essentially they're ready to go and containers that
- 11:30Speaker 2: just pop right in their microwave, so it's very easy. Again,
- 11:32Speaker 2: you're delivering the sick people who many who are alone
- 11:35Speaker 2: but also not able to go out and shop feeling sick.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Cancer is very expensive.
- 11:40Speaker 2: You know, it's just so extremely helpful in terms of
- 11:44Speaker 2: making life a little easier, but also the food is
- 11:47Speaker 2: so healthy and nourishing for their sick body. Touch on
- 11:51Speaker 2: the food and how your project Angel food dieticians and
- 11:54Speaker 2: team work directly with these clients doctors to make sure
- 11:58Speaker 2: they get the diets right for their ailments.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Yeah, so these are medically tailored meals because we believe
- 12:06Speaker 3: food is medicine. So if you have diabetes, we have
- 12:10Speaker 3: a meal that helps bring down your A one C levels.
- 12:13Speaker 3: You don't just take medication, you take food as medication.
- 12:18Speaker 3: If you eat the right food, like diabetics, you need
- 12:21Speaker 3: to have brown rice instead of white rice, and whole
- 12:24Speaker 3: week pasta instead of a regular pasta. Our dietitians and
- 12:29Speaker 3: our chefs work together to curate the perfect meals. The
- 12:33Speaker 3: dietitians make sure it has the right nutrients, the right portions,
- 12:38Speaker 3: that the chefs make sure that looks good and taste good.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Has to look good because you eat with your eyes,
- 12:45Speaker 3: and it has to silver case taste good. So if
- 12:48Speaker 3: we're going to take out salt, we're going to put
- 12:50Speaker 3: in the different nerves and spices. So some of our
- 12:53Speaker 3: clients will say, oh my god, this tasted like a
- 12:56Speaker 3: gourmet meal because it has deep different spices that they've
- 13:01Speaker 3: never tasted before. And then the other thing about these
- 13:04Speaker 3: meals is, for most diet plans, you have three months
- 13:11Speaker 3: of unduplicated meals. So if you get turkey meat loaf
- 13:15Speaker 3: today and if you love it, I'm sorry, but you
- 13:18Speaker 3: won't see it for another ninety days. Oh how hard
- 13:21Speaker 3: we're going to get so.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Much for Yeah, other favorites, Yeah, other favorites.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Sure.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I've been able to taste a little bit of the
- 13:27Speaker 2: food here and there, and the food is absolutely delicious.
- 13:30Speaker 2: So again, if you know someone who is sick or
- 13:33Speaker 2: in need, or someone in your family, gosh, if my
- 13:35Speaker 2: mom lived down from the barrier, my mom, she's got
- 13:37Speaker 2: COPD and some asthma issues. I know COPD is also
- 13:41Speaker 2: on your list of peah. And again, whether it's someone
- 13:45Speaker 2: that's you elderly, or anyone that you know that maybe
- 13:48Speaker 2: sick or that could truly benefit from this program, this food.
- 13:52Speaker 2: It's all at no cost to the client. It's an
- 13:55Speaker 2: incredible gift. So if you are someone that you know
- 13:58Speaker 2: or someone in your family could really really use the
- 14:00Speaker 2: gift of Project and Angel Food, please reach out and
- 14:03Speaker 2: see how it all works and apply. Have them apply
- 14:05Speaker 2: at Angelfood dot org. Also, if you have the time
- 14:08Speaker 2: that Richard said to volunteer and work in their kitchen
- 14:11Speaker 2: temporarily and Lincoln Heights, then officially we'll be back in
- 14:14Speaker 2: Hollywood before the end of the year hopefully.
- 14:16Speaker 1: And then also fundraising is key.
- 14:19Speaker 2: You do a bunch of events throughout the year, and
- 14:21Speaker 2: this is one of your big ees that we can
- 14:23Speaker 2: all buy a ticket and go to be a part
- 14:25Speaker 2: of the magic at the Angel Awards happening Saturday, September
- 14:29Speaker 2: the twenty seventh at Paramount Studios with Belinda Carlisle Live.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Yes, this is our premiere ev end of the year
- 14:37Speaker 3: and this year, for the first time ever, we're doing
- 14:40Speaker 3: it at Paramount Studios. We usually do it in our
- 14:43Speaker 3: parking lot, but guess what, we don't have a parking
- 14:46Speaker 3: lot because we're in the temporary kitchen in our kitchen
- 14:50Speaker 3: is being renovated while we get everything ready, but it's
- 14:56Speaker 3: going to be really interesting. We're going to be near
- 15:00Speaker 3: the fountain right there at Paramount. We're going to have
- 15:03Speaker 3: the dinner outside, then we're going to go inside and
- 15:07Speaker 3: do the entire show in the theater there Paramount Theater.
- 15:13Speaker 3: We're also going to give you some popcorn and some
- 15:16Speaker 3: red vines. I think. Oh, so that's kind of fun.
- 15:18Speaker 3: We always had that little twist to it. So not
- 15:22Speaker 3: only will Blenda Carlisle open the show with a bang,
- 15:27Speaker 3: Caroline Ray is going to be our MC's hilarious.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:32Speaker 3: We are honoring Jennifer Tilly. Everyone loves Jennifer Tilly. And
- 15:38Speaker 3: I don't think we've announced this yet, but I'm going
- 15:41Speaker 3: to tell you Lisa. Kathy Hilton is going to give
- 15:44Speaker 3: Jennifer the award.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Oh very nice. And Kathy is a very generous woman.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Too, very generous, and I hope she raises her hand
- 15:52Speaker 3: when we asked for live auction.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Hey Kathy.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Also, while you're here, where's that the check book of
- 15:59Speaker 2: your exactly?
- 16:01Speaker 3: And we're honoring Cedar Sinai. They are wonderful partners. We
- 16:05Speaker 3: love them. It's just gonna be an amazing evening, the fun, laughter,
- 16:11Speaker 3: poignant stories and helping an incredible organization.
- 16:16Speaker 2: And again, anyone you meet your Apologian angel food, I mean,
- 16:18Speaker 2: they just become a part of your family. I mean
- 16:21Speaker 2: you and I were friends before you start working there,
- 16:23Speaker 2: and now I love that you're working there, and now
- 16:25Speaker 2: you're the big boss because you're so good at what
- 16:27Speaker 2: you do and you're still good at bringing people together.
- 16:29Speaker 2: And just everyone that I meet through here just has
- 16:31Speaker 2: the biggest heart. And we need more of that in
- 16:33Speaker 2: this world with all the craziness that we face and
- 16:36Speaker 2: terrible things on the news. You know, we need to
- 16:38Speaker 2: stick together. Good people need to stick together and just
- 16:41Speaker 2: meet wonderful people through this organization. So I implore you
- 16:43Speaker 2: to volunteer to find out more, get hired as a driver.
- 16:47Speaker 2: They're always hiring drivers. Volunteer as a driver, and buy
- 16:50Speaker 2: a ticket for the Angel Wards. You'll meet so many
- 16:52Speaker 2: wonderful people. It's at the Paramount Studios and come on,
- 16:55Speaker 2: Blenda Carlisle, She's amazing. It's gonna be Saturday now, just
- 16:58Speaker 2: a few weeks Saturday, September twenty seventh. Takes in details
- 17:01Speaker 2: all right there for everything takes a details about the event.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Also about volunteering, also how to apply, all right there
- 17:07Speaker 2: at angelfood dot org.
- 17:10Speaker 3: And on one new thing about volunteering, yes, is we're
- 17:14Speaker 3: opening up Saturdays. Okay, we usually just open on Sundays
- 17:20Speaker 3: through Friday, but we've got a stockpile meals for the move,
- 17:25Speaker 3: so we need volunteers to come in on Saturday. And
- 17:29Speaker 3: there's a great way online to book your date through
- 17:33Speaker 3: our calendar show.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Okay, all right, great, and it's.
- 17:36Speaker 3: All right there on high Tech, Lisa.
- 17:38Speaker 2: What was needed, It was needed angelfood dot org. For
- 17:41Speaker 2: all the info angelfood dot org. And we can't wait
- 17:44Speaker 2: to see you at the Angel Awards for Project Angel
- 17:46Speaker 2: Food on Saturday, September the twenty seventh.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Richard, you love you, Thank you day.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Richard. I love you and iHeart thank you so much.
