- 0:01SPEAKER_02: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Jack Podcast powered by the Nation, part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:06SPEAKER_02: And I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co host and we don't have to be a good thing.
- 0:51SPEAKER_04: It's a better record, sir.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: We're this much we are this closer on the mountain climb that is to five hundred.
- 0:57SPEAKER_04: And I'm proud to say that our boys got it done.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Do not mention climbing mountains.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: I do not want to hear that right now.
- 1:05SPEAKER_04: I want to hear the word climb, brown, shine, moon, country.
- 1:10SPEAKER_04: I don't want to hear any of that right now.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it doesn't matter.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: That's in the past.
- 1:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, listen 12.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: All we know is that we own Houston.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: We we own that school.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: And it's, you know, it just is what it is.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: It's not like super impressive to say, oh, you beat Houston.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: But hey, we continue to beat Houston.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: That's great.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: They're down bad.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: Donovan Smith's uh homecoming was ruined.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: Fantastic.
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: Steven, you're talking about dominating conference rival Houston.
- 1:39SPEAKER_04: So it bumped up.
- 1:41SPEAKER_04: It went up a notch here.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: Overall, though, we'll get to this quick because we have a great conversation that's coming with uh Joe Goodman and Matt Workman from the Bear Den Pod.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Great friends of the program.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: They're fantastic.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: Um, but just to touch on the Houston game, horrible first half defensively for Texas Tech, no sort of pressure at all.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: Um, we held it down.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: Luckily, offense was on it, special teams was on it.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, the best special teams performance I think I've seen from a Texas Tech team in I don't know how long, probably since you and me have been fans, but pull it out.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: Second half adjustments were made.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: Um, we held them to a total of zero points in the second half, and we kept the scoring going.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: We ended up winning by, I don't know, three touchdowns.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: So overall thoughts on Houston.
- 2:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, dude.
- 2:28SPEAKER_04: You know at the beginning, at the beginning, it looked like it was gonna be a dog fight, which I I think we like we kind of expected.
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: I didn't expect us to blow out Houston, especially with like the way we did it eventually.
- 2:36SPEAKER_04: So, but we really made Donovan Smith's homecoming look like a a superstar.
- 2:39SPEAKER_04: Like he looked like he came in with lasers in his eyes and he was gonna come in and you know try to uh put one over his uh old team.
- 2:45SPEAKER_04: And you know he went in there with that mentality to do so, and it really looked like he was, and he was for that for those first two quarters.
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: So um, defense, like you said, terrible at the beginning.
- 2:55SPEAKER_04: But dude, I gotta say, man, and to you know, to kind of wrap this up and keep it brief, is dude, second half adjustments is my phrase of the game, uh, for both for both sides of the ball, because even even with the defense, you know, finally pulling it together, like you said, shutting them out in the second half, our offense kept find finding ways to score.
- 3:13SPEAKER_04: So I was really, really impressed with how complete our team looked in the second half because it really turned into a total whopping, which I wish it was all game, but hey, they figured out, and that's all that matters.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, I was I was thrilled, obviously, with the run game.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Anytime you have two guys rush for over a hundred yards and carry you, it's fantastic.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: Tosh Brooks, another great performance.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: That dude just keeps climbing the ladder of all-time great Texas Tech running backs.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: So uh you got to keep riding him.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: Cameron Valdez, it was nice to see him uh finally get his first touchdown as a red raider, broke off two huge runs in this game.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: I think he averaged 20 yards a carry for this one because not bad.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Not bad, not bad, I gotta say.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: The receivers, such a difference from West Virginia.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, they caught everything.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: It seemed like Miles Price was fantastic.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Uh Loak Fungi caught that great uh one in the corner.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: It was uh it was a great showing all around.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: Xavier White had a great game.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, I thought Barron was solid.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: I thought Barron was exactly what you needed to win this game.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: And now his stats don't, you know, pop out to you 161 yards, two touchdowns.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: But you look at both those touchdowns, they were dots, absolute dimes from a guy who was hurt pretty much all week going into this, didn't throw in practice, didn't do this, and he goes in and just plays how you need him to play and execute to win the game.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: So, shouts out to the offense.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: They absolutely brought it.
- 4:37SPEAKER_04: 100%, man.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: And that just gives you a lot more confidence into uh what we're about to discuss.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, and that would be Baylor.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: We have it coming up.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: We're gonna swing you over to our conversation with the guys from the Bear Den.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: Get ready for it.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: All right, we are here.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: Joe Goodman, Matt Workman, the Bear Den Podcast joins the talk and tech podcast once again.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: It is butt week.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: Fellas, how are we doing today?
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: We're back.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: We're back.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: But's done.
- 5:09SPEAKER_05: But stuff.
- 5:10SPEAKER_05: I've lost count of times how many times, how many times we've gotten to hear that intro.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: I know it's beautiful, it's beautiful.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: Um, guys, this is let's kind of paint a picture for the people because the season stinks.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: Okay, you're getting you're getting ahead of yourself here.
- 5:25SPEAKER_07: No, the season stink now.
- 5:28SPEAKER_07: Is that true?
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: See, the turnaround has begun for both of our programs.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: We're both sitting here two and three.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: Not great.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: Not gonna lie to you.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: No, a couple uh a couple losses to some teams that we did not ever in our lifetime expect to lose to.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, but we played the newcomers last week, UCF, Houston, they come in first year in the Big 12, and they're like, we're gonna go and beat Baylor in Texas Tech.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: That's what's gonna happen.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: We're gonna start off crazy, it's gonna be nuts, and then Baylor overcomes a huge deficit, 35 to 7.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: They come back, four touchdowns, win with a last second field goal.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech ends up dominating the second half against Houston.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: We put them back in their place rightfully where they should be.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: How how are y'all feeling as a Baylor fan base right now coming off that big win?
- 6:20SPEAKER_05: I got I got this question on the ODB mail debat mailbag this week on like, hey, what should our expectation on the season be now?
- 6:27SPEAKER_05: Like, how are you feeling?
- 6:28SPEAKER_05: And I said, My expectation is I can't wait for our 40-point victory and the rematch in Arlington against Texas.
- 6:33SPEAKER_05: So uh that that's where we're at now.
- 6:36SPEAKER_05: We got uh we got a quarter of good football, and I'm fully bought back in, baby.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: I was the other way.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: I went the other way with it.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: I uh I said we could still go three and nine.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: So I think we got the opposite ends.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we got the opposite ends of the bear dead.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: We got Joe, you know, I can't relate any harder to your thoughts because as soon as I see even an ounce of faith, I am all the way back bought in.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Back.
- 7:06SPEAKER_05: There's there's no well, there's no other way to live as as a fan of like, let's be honest, of like the the tier two of college football.
- 7:13SPEAKER_05: Like, we're not Georgia, we're not Bama, we're not Ohio State or Michigan.
- 7:16SPEAKER_05: So you know what?
- 7:17SPEAKER_05: We're gonna have fun with it, and I'm gonna hate my team when they lose, and then I'm gonna act like they can beat the world when they win.
- 7:22SPEAKER_04: Tier two, I'll take that any day of the week in any aspect of my whole life.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: If we're hitting tier two, if we're in 80, fantastic.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: That's a B baby.
- 7:36SPEAKER_05: Tristan.
- 7:37SPEAKER_05: Look, all I know is this week, this week, guys, we're playing on ESPN two, not the most glamorous of networks.
- 7:42SPEAKER_05: We were talking about this beforehand, but TCU and Iowa State are playing on another network that has two in it, but it's FS2, which is like the third or fourth level Fox station.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: So you know what?
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's really like Fox Sports 3.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: Is it really like Fox Sports, Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2?
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: We were on FS2 last week, and I tell you what, it took me a while to find the channel.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: Well, that's cause you're getting pulled down by a commuter school.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: We were on FS1 and had to wait for the end of a truck race last week before we could watch it.
- 8:15SPEAKER_07: Yeah, about half the first quarter we had to watch in the app because there was a truck.
- 8:19SPEAKER_07: They it was it was they would not stop wrecking.
- 8:23SPEAKER_07: There was like I I turned the game on, it said there was five laps left to go, yeah.
- 8:27SPEAKER_07: And they like start the race out of a wreck.
- 8:30SPEAKER_05: Um first lap wreck, and so it's like back to it was the worst thing in the world.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: You know, they couldn't make it back to the studio, and I was like, I can't do this.
- 8:38SPEAKER_04: You know, they could have been doing they were doing you a favor for those first three quarters, though.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: I mean, like if against UCF, but um uh Steven, who what which breed won the dog show that was on being I was about to say we were right before our game was the Westminster dog show, and we got to see the uh the Great Pyrenees win.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: Yes, that was the the the mop dog.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: I tell you what, that mob dog is electric when he's going around and you can't even see the legs because the the fur is overflowing.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: It's fantastic.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: I was dog show competition and at the cop.
- 9:11SPEAKER_05: I feel like you guys would be like it would be right up there with meat judging.
- 9:14SPEAKER_05: Y'all will be able like the same recruiters could go get that.
- 9:16SPEAKER_05: Like you guys could raise some sick ass dogs.
- 9:19SPEAKER_05: I could see tech being number one in the country at that.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: I think tech just win like some kind of like uh like wood cutting like competition.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: No, I don't I don't 100% know if that was truthful.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: I don't know if that was a real thing or if that because that was Coach Beans who was putting that out there, and that guy, you never know with him.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: Uh, but yeah, it was the blade.
- 9:41SPEAKER_04: We have this reputation of you know being this party school, but while it we'll do as everybody know, while y'all are out partying and having premarital sex, we are studying the br the blade at Texas.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Okay, we just be like AM and put it.
- 9:54SPEAKER_05: I think it's more that you guys have just mastered the party games, and so like like like a meat judging had to start like meat judging is the most like drunk dad, you're 13 butt lights deep, and you're just like, I'm gonna show you why this stakes better than this one right here.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: Joe, that's a great segue because we're gonna be in town, we're gonna be in town this coming week.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: The first game that both me and Tristan have been to in person this year, coming to Waco for the first time.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: We're going to McLean, we're seeing you, we're experiencing the tailgate scene.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: What what should we expect from this?
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: Because I'm expecting a lot here.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: What should we expect?
- 10:37SPEAKER_05: Matt, what what okay?
- 10:38SPEAKER_05: So, like, are you talking about as a whole or Matt and I'd tailgate?
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: As a whole, like say the tailgating scene in general, and then give us like y'all specific one.
- 10:47SPEAKER_05: Small and fun.
- 10:48SPEAKER_05: So, like, there are there are like there are multiple segments of Baylor tailgating.
- 10:52SPEAKER_05: So there's the the fancy, like stereotypical Baylor fan, like that you would think of, like tucked in polo into their khaki shorts, right?
- 11:01SPEAKER_05: Um, with a dad hat.
- 11:03SPEAKER_05: Uh, they go where there's like permanent tents and stuff like that.
- 11:07SPEAKER_05: It's all over by the river, it's expensive to be over there, everything is standardized.
- 11:12SPEAKER_05: Uh, but it's a lot of fun.
- 11:13SPEAKER_05: You'll see that's where you'll see like frats and maybe like some more the students, and then there's like the across the street lot where Matt and I are, which is kind of like more of the degenerates um that just come out there and party.
- 11:23SPEAKER_05: You'll see a giant like Baylor pirate flag flies over ours.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Why else would we be there?
- 11:27SPEAKER_05: I mean, yeah, come on.
- 11:28SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 11:28SPEAKER_05: Like we we still remember the days when you weren't allowed to drink at Baylor tailgating and you had to be across the street from the stadium, and so like it's so that's where we stay, you know, it's just just where we feel comfortable.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: You you've already claimed that ground, and so it's there forever.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: Respect.
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: So I I I I 100% feel small but fun.
- 11:47SPEAKER_04: I I like that zone.
- 11:48SPEAKER_04: I'm in I'm in that.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: I'm all I'm all about that.
- 11:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's not gonna be Iowa State, where it's like if you were like in a helicopter, you know, McDonald's colors would be all that you could see around the stadium, or yeah, like it's not gonna be LSU, but you're gonna have a hell of a good time.
- 12:03SPEAKER_05: There's gonna be free beer, there's gonna be free food, and there's gonna be music, and we're gonna have multiple TVs playing the games that are going on during the day.
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: So um we're ready.
- 12:11SPEAKER_05: And it's I won't lie, it's a pretty friendly scene to the opposing fan bases, and because of uh Waco's central location, generally speaking, you will probably see plenty of other red uh like folks dressed in red and black around.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: Well, we're like I'm like no, go ahead.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Small and fund.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: I said small and fun could also be the name of like Tristy's like only fans.
- 12:32SPEAKER_04: So oh yeah, that's that's I was trying to make that joke, but I guess it didn't really land because it just like Joe was like one percent serious, yeah.
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: Man, it's quaint, it's it's comfortable, it's you know, but well, I was like, damn it.
- 12:44SPEAKER_04: I guess it I guess it didn't land.
- 12:46SPEAKER_04: So thank you, Matt.
- 12:46SPEAKER_04: That that alley hooped me.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, very exciting to hear that because we are going to bring y'all a special gift uh when we come.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: Not gonna say it right now, but uh we are gonna bring the party.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: We're running 12 deep, so you're gonna have some red raiders there in your in your footprint over there.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: Are y'all bringing tortillas?
- 13:06SPEAKER_05: We can't do I I know you've brought I've I've been to multiple Texas Tech bowl games, so I know you guys bring them to bowl games, but do you like we spent so much time playing in a neutral site and you guys would do it at Jerry World?
- 13:19SPEAKER_05: I don't I don't remember a couple of years ago.
- 13:23SPEAKER_05: Man, when y'all probably should have beat us if we're being honest.
- 13:26SPEAKER_05: Um uh the butt funny remember if there were any tortillas at that game.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: There it's like true away games, not usually, especially like conference, which is a little weird because you'd think our fan base would do that.
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: But no, any bowl game, any neutral site, like we're absolutely gonna like show who we are and throw tortillas, and then obviously at home, but not like true away games.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: I don't think it's usually a thing.
- 13:48SPEAKER_04: But but Joe, if you want me to shove some mission tortillas into my pants and get them nice, warm, and moist for you, I can do that.
- 13:55SPEAKER_04: Like, yeah, that's exactly what I want.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: Well, we're getting some uh Tristan pants tortillas.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: Uh very exciting.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: It's always funny to see the pictures of uh of the players trying to take a bite out of one of those tortillas because it's just Tristan's pants.
- 14:14SPEAKER_07: Is the name of one of the thumbnails on his OnlyFans?
- 14:17SPEAKER_04: That's a certain uh uh level, uh uh fan level.
- 14:20SPEAKER_04: You know, I don't know what they're called.
- 14:21SPEAKER_04: It's like what what if you mean certain subscription level?
- 14:24SPEAKER_04: There it is.
- 14:24SPEAKER_04: There he goes.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a premium content right there.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: Yes, that one's the 50 cents a month if you want to really go crazy.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: So the big bucks, yeah, big bucks over there.
- 14:34SPEAKER_05: Um we're over here giving you guys Patreon ideas.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, look at y'all, look at y'all.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: We should actually talk about football, huh?
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: Um Baylor, what what should be?
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: I haven't watched a lot to be quite honest with you, because I think a lot of our games have overlapped in time.
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: There just hasn't there's been a lot of disappointment with Texas Tech.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: So whenever Texas Tech loses, I don't watch another game because I'm so depressed.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: That's just how I roll, it's what I do.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: So tell me a little bit about the team from offense to defense.
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: What are the strong suits?
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: What are kind of the stuff to look out for that tech could potentially take advantage of?
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: Uh give me give me kind of the scoop on the Baylor Bears.
- 15:15SPEAKER_05: So, like offensively, I would say we're similar to what I think an answer for you guys would be right now, and that's just that we don't know.
- 15:22SPEAKER_05: There's been so many injuries just in the first first few games this year, namely at quarterback, right?
- 15:27SPEAKER_05: Exactly what you guys are now experiencing with Tyler Shook being out.
- 15:31SPEAKER_05: Um, so you know, we had Sawyer Robertson starting for a while, probably way too early for him to be in this, considering he was in the Mike Leach system, he was in an air raid, which is just diametrically opposed to what Jeff Grimes runs as the offensive coordinator.
- 15:45SPEAKER_05: It's a it's he's going to have to learn a lot of things.
- 15:47SPEAKER_05: Something that is fits more of the strengths of a guy like Blake Shapin, who was hurt in game one.
- 15:51SPEAKER_05: So we hadn't seen him until last week.
- 15:53SPEAKER_05: Um, Dominic Richardson, uh transfer running back from Oklahoma State, who looked really good in the first couple of games, got banged up in the second half against Utah.
- 16:01SPEAKER_05: So, I mean, he really hasn't had his feet underneath him.
- 16:04SPEAKER_05: Brand new offensive line.
- 16:05SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 16:06SPEAKER_05: I maybe returning one starter from last year, I think.
- 16:09SPEAKER_05: And they've really struggled this year, which hindered a guy like Richard Reese, who you know was uh preseason all Big 12, was one of the freshman players of the year last year on offense in the Big 12.
- 16:19SPEAKER_05: So, you know, again, last week against UCF, we started to see some things come back.
- 16:24SPEAKER_05: Um, Monterey Baldwin, our biggest threat um as a receiver, could not get going.
- 16:30SPEAKER_05: Clearly, there was some issues between him and Sawyer Robertson on being in sync, and he had some key drops, just his body language looked really bad.
- 16:37SPEAKER_05: Shaping comes back last week.
- 16:39SPEAKER_05: Boom, the dude has like 150 yards, a uh one or two touchdowns, like on seven catches, including a critical one that got us the game-winning field goal.
- 16:47SPEAKER_05: Um, so like on offense, it's kind of like an I don't know.
- 16:51SPEAKER_05: It kind of feels like hey, maybe the offensive line is kind of figuring it out a little bit in gelling.
- 16:55SPEAKER_05: Maybe um, you know, having the quarterback back is going to take some pressure off the running game.
- 16:59SPEAKER_05: Maybe that's gonna help out the receivers because of the relationships that he has there.
- 17:03SPEAKER_05: Um, but again, this kind of like about a half of football that we're talking about where we've seen that be successful.
- 17:08SPEAKER_05: So we don't know if like first half of UCF was them shaking off the rust and actually being out there together for the first time this season, and then they got it in the second half, or maybe UCF just completely took their foot off the gas.
- 17:19SPEAKER_05: Um, that's offensively speaking.
- 17:21SPEAKER_05: I'll let Matt run through our defense, which I think there's only one position group that's worthwhile.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Um, defensive line's not good.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: Uh has been we're missing like both our starting nose tackles, and we're starting a defensive end at nose tackle for the time being.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Um linebackers not great, and even worse is like our starting weak side linebacker towards ACL, so he's out for the year.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: Um safeties, not great.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: They uh have not played well all year.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Cornerbacks have been very good though.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: So that's our outside, like they've pretty much shut down like outside receivers like all year.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: It's been like the middle of the field like wide open.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: So you're gonna look for some.
- 18:08SPEAKER_05: You can run the ball up the middle and you can throw the ball up the middle.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Throw in the middle.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: So that's it.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 18:13SPEAKER_02: Well, we'll see.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: We'll see about that because I mean, obviously, Taj Brooks has been on one for Texas Tech.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: He has absolutely been our best offensive weapon by all standards in every game.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, honestly, wish we would have used him more in those early games.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, but it seems like the offense for tech has kind of figured that out.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: So that may be something for Texas Tech that we can potentially take advantage of.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: Uh, so far this season, I haven't seen a lot of throwing in the middle.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: It's been a lot of uh, you know, running the uh out routes going that way, screen passes, which has worked the past couple weeks.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: But um, yeah, that I mean, injuries, man.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: Injuries for both of our teams have been just absolutely brutal.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, obviously, us with with Chuck, and uh, we've also lost our two inside linebackers at this point.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, Josiah Pierre didn't play last week.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: Uh Jacob Rodriguez has been hurt since the Wyoming game.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, we're having to throw in a lot of freshmen, a lot of guys we didn't really expect to play uh this early on in the season.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: And uh, so you know, at this point, it coming off wins though, those guys can get some extra little motivation um that you wouldn't really expect otherwise.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: And and this is their first time really in college football, it's their first time experiencing this type of stuff, but um it it'll be interesting, man.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: I I think we have pretty evenly uh talent-wise, at least, I think evenly matched programs at this point.
- 19:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, it's uh I I was I was telling somebody in the R Daily Bears Discord today, like if any if there's anybody out there that is like trying to sell you something on how this game is going to go, it's just pure snake oil.
- 19:51SPEAKER_05: Because I don't I don't think the way either team is currently constructed has it hasn't been seen enough, it hasn't been played together enough that that you could legitimately say, I know what this team is, or even what I know what this team is capable of.
- 20:04SPEAKER_05: Like I we both know these teams are capable of losing stupid games.
- 20:07SPEAKER_05: Okay, that but I don't think we either I don't think either group has really seen their team play at the highest level possible for four quarters, you know.
- 20:16SPEAKER_05: You guys, it was a close game with Houston until halftime, you know.
- 20:18SPEAKER_05: I mean, and then and then you blew them out and and ran away with it in the second half, and it's kind of the same thing that Baylor did, you know, like we gave up 20 28 points, I think, in the first half.
- 20:29SPEAKER_05: We gave up a touchdown for the rest of the way, and then ended up winning 36 to 35.
- 20:33SPEAKER_05: So, um, you know, it's it's just an interesting thing that I'll see.
- 20:37SPEAKER_05: The most fun part about this, let's let's just be honest, though, is not going to be played between the lines.
- 20:42SPEAKER_05: It's the fun of the fact that Joey Maguire is going to be on one sideline, David Rand is going to be on the other, and there's as much of I think respect as there is like a real healthy desire to beat the other guy.
- 20:55SPEAKER_05: Like it's this is this has become, in my opinion, a really fun rivalry where like neither side really hates the other, but goddamn, I want to beat the hell out of you.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: There's there's so much mutual respect between these two guys, it's nuts.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Like you'd think they're just gonna go and hug at halftime, and nobody's really gonna try to beat one another.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, the elephant in the room, obviously, for Texas Tech fans, is last year.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: The worst game Texas Tech played last year was when Baylor came to town.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: We had so much going on, so much on the line, and we just laid an egg.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, the quarterback that happened to be starting for that game is going to be starting for this game.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: Um, backup last year, he's a backup this year, but Baron Morton is back to play Baylor.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: He played his worst game as a collegiate athlete against Baylor last year.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: So, Tristan, I what do you think from a tech perspective going into this one?
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: How do you see the the storylines with the coaching staff, the quarterbacks, all that kind of stuff?
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: What are your kind of your thoughts?
- 21:56SPEAKER_04: All I know is two teams are gonna walk.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: Into McLean Stadium.
- 22:01SPEAKER_04: The fame bubble.
- 22:04SPEAKER_04: Almost looks like a toilet seat from above.
- 22:06SPEAKER_05: I was about to say some do claim our stadium looks like a toilet seat.
- 22:10SPEAKER_04: Some.
- 22:10SPEAKER_04: Some.
- 22:12SPEAKER_04: Most.
- 22:13SPEAKER_04: Um, they're gonna have you have even the Brazos River running through it, you know, running right by it.
- 22:18SPEAKER_04: You have so much.
- 22:19SPEAKER_06: All I'm saying is, I think you might trade some shade for a toilet seat look in the jokes.
- 22:24SPEAKER_06: I think you might trade some shade.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: Fair, fair would be fine.
- 22:29SPEAKER_04: I I'll I'll admit uh yes, shade is shade is pretty good.
- 22:33SPEAKER_04: But but this is the butt bowl, and all these things are leading to the bubble.
- 22:37SPEAKER_04: And lady, ladies and gentlemen, no ladies on this podcast, gentlemen, only one team can walk out of the stadium 500.
- 22:45SPEAKER_04: Okay, yes, and three and three.
- 22:51SPEAKER_04: But um, so to answer your question, how is this gonna go?
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: Is honestly, which team screws up less and which team gets it going faster?
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: Because like like all all I've said, I really don't think um there's a team that really just flat out out classes the other at any certain position.
- 23:10SPEAKER_04: And so I really I really do think it's gonna come down to something as stupid as who turned it over more.
- 23:15SPEAKER_04: So I just think as long as he take care of the ball, I think we're in good shape.
- 23:19SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, it's just there's there's nothing there's no game this year that has caused me any confidence to just say that flat out that we know where we're doing, and I just I feel like we're figuring it out as we go right now, and that's awesome as a fan.
- 23:29SPEAKER_04: I love that.
- 23:30SPEAKER_05: That's amazing.
- 23:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, this definitely feels like it's uh it's a game that'll be decided by like a special teams mistake.
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: And that I mean, this is the best time for Texas Tech right now because we're coming off two special teams touchdowns last week.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: We had a 102-yard kick return, we had a block punt uh that really kind of kept us in the first half with Houston just scoring every drive.
- 23:52SPEAKER_02: Um, and we were actually ended up up at half because of those two plays.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: So our special teams is is doing well right now.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: That's something we haven't been able to say for multiple years uh at this point.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: But yeah, man, I uh Blake Shapin being back, he's such an interesting quarterback because you know you start the kind of beginning of his career, he uh was behind uh the other guy who went to Oregon State.
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: Or where did he go?
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: Uh Gary Bohanan, he went to South Florida.
- 24:20SPEAKER_02: That's right, that's right.
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: Gary Bohan uh he takes over the starting job.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: Pretty much coaching staff is real with Bohanon, tells him to transfer.
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: Shapen takes over as the starting guy.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: And last year, pretty disappointing overall, I think, for Shapen from a Baylor fan's perspective.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: Um, this year he obviously injured very early, came back.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: What's kind of the consensus on Shapen within the Baylor fan base right now?
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: Well, right now it's like he's he's the guy because he almost single-handedly willed that win, that comeback.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: And if you saw any of the game, like his his jersey is just like littered with like blood stains from putting his body on the line.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: He can't really slide, so when he because if he has he's coming off of like a strained MCL or something, some and so like when he runs, he's like just diving head first and taking hits because he doesn't have any other option.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: But he he was the best thing about the opening game loss where he did get injured, he was the best player there.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: Then when he came back against the UCF, he absolutely was the best thing going on and kind of spearheaded that comeback.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: So I think it's completely 180 from at the end of last season where people were like, get this bum out of here, anybody will be better.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: To now it's like he's the best player we have.
- 25:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there was a lot of talk pre-season from Aranda and from other players.
- 25:48SPEAKER_05: Like, we heard this from TJ Franklin too at Media Days was that last year Shapen really struggled with the leadership aspect of things, and it was a big focus for him.
- 25:58SPEAKER_05: And like Aranda was basically talked about how he had made this 180.
- 26:02SPEAKER_05: And TJ Franklin, like, specifically talked about who's one of our defensive end for those who aren't aware.
- 26:06SPEAKER_05: But um, he specifically talked about like there are things last year that were happening in practice that guys let go and you know, or in meetings, and so like he didn't elaborate, but I assume it's like guys not paying attention, not playing hard, maybe showing up late to things, you know, not not going through drills like they should.
- 26:21SPEAKER_05: And he was like, a guy like like Shapin now is like in dudes' faces, being like, No, no, we're doing this the right way.
- 26:26SPEAKER_05: And so I think he's kind of like he's matured a little bit, he's embraced his role.
- 26:31SPEAKER_05: Last year, I think another part of the problem he had was I don't think he was fully healthy at all at any point during the season.
- 26:36SPEAKER_05: Um, I think he was dealing with some shoulder stuff, which is what he had dealt with the year before when he kind of was the backup and played in a few games for Bohan.
- 26:44SPEAKER_05: Um, but this year he had he definitely has a different vibe about him.
- 26:48SPEAKER_05: And some Baylor fans that might listen to this might kill me, but like he almost feels like a tech quarterback, like one of those just like blue-collar quarterbacks who comes out there and um he can put up tons of flash flashy stats when the game says that he should, but he's also the kind of guy that's like, if you hit him, he's gonna get up and get back up in your face and be like, do it again, you know.
- 27:08SPEAKER_05: Like there we've seen tech quarterbacks like that throughout.
- 27:10SPEAKER_05: Like, I think of like a guy like BJ Simmons, right?
- 27:12SPEAKER_05: You know, like yeah, playing with a broken finger or like how tough Graham Harrell was like that quintessential love it kind of quarterback.
- 27:20SPEAKER_05: He brings that kind of grit to the offense.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: Well, and he's also been injured, like a lot of tech quarterbacks.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: So, you know, that's that's also a very give and you take.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: You give and you take.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: Um, it it kind of sucks because Tyler Shuck did have a lot of those capabilities.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: He's you know, everybody raved about his leadership off the field in the locker room, in the uh preparation, getting these guys ready.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: Um, obviously had kind of a rough start to this year before the injury, but uh so Baron Morton is coming into a weird situation right now where he that's his team now.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, Shucks he cracked that fibula, man.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: He's not coming back.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: So this is his time.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: This is his team for the rest of the year.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: He doesn't have a Donovan Smith in his shadow like he did last year.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: This is his team, and so we'll kind of see he's one and oh as a starter that gives you ultimate confidence.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: Um, and I'm just excited to see how he plays specifically because there's another elephant in the room, Joey Maguire, one and six on the road as the Texas Tech head coach, which is a uh terrifying stat to look at.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: We lost in Morgantown this year.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: Not good, not great, Tristan.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: What's the win?
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: The one win was Iowa State last year, which again wasn't that win.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was a it was a gritty four.
- 28:40SPEAKER_05: I have a question about Morton.
- 28:42SPEAKER_05: So there was like a significant portion of your fan base that wanted him to be the starter this year, correct?
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we've uh we've gone back and forth at this.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: We try to stay pretty pretty even because we wanted Tyler Scheck to succeed very badly.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: Um, and so we you know wanted to ride him until obviously the injuries took over.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: Baron Morton's a West Texas kid.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: He grew up, he was from Eastland High School, I think it's an hour away from Abilene.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: Um, so the Texas Tech fan base obviously goes to him and thinks he is the golden boy, he is the golden arm, he is the West Texas prodigy.
- 29:18SPEAKER_04: Um he's also the highest-rated recruit, higher quarterback recruit we've ever had, as well.
- 29:23SPEAKER_04: That adds to it as well.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: He is, he was a four-star recruit.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: I think he's a top 10 all-time recruit for Texas Tech.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: So it's you know, there's obvious stuff, and you've seen it like last year when he had to take over from Donovan Smith injuries and Chuck injuries, when he played that number seven Oklahoma State in Stillwater last year, he was awesome until he got kind of banged up in the third quarter and then we blew it at the end.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: But um, no, he's he's got some serious, serious talent on him.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: It's just can he put it together mentally?
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: Um, and can he be consistent throughout the entirety of the game?
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: That's kind of the whole thing with Morton.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's not like anyone could have seen the Tyler Shuck injury coming.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: Like he's not really known for injuries through his career.
- 30:10SPEAKER_04: It's a f it's a freak thing, huh?
- 30:12SPEAKER_04: You know, it's uh it's a horrible stat.
- 30:14SPEAKER_04: 2016.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: In some universe, some alternate world, like he's like a Heisman trophy winning quarterback.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: It's it's not into the NFL.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: You really think setting the record for most games played consecutively?
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: He was backing up Justin Herbert like this is I got it made over here in Oregon.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: And then yeah, I'm next.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: And then I dude, uh you talk about just a freaking career that could have gone so many different ways.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: But um our fan base can unite now because there was with Shucks play at the very beginning of the year, it wasn't great.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: Obviously, the Oregon game, he threw three interceptions with two of them just being absolutely brutal mistakes.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: Wyoming, he was pretty meh.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: Um, and so you know, now we can all kind of rally behind the guy, which is you know, it's it's unfortunate what happened to Tyler, but it's kind of a good thing for the fan base that we can we finally have our guy to all get behind.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: That's another similar similarity with like Baylor, because there's a there was a division of like people didn't want Blake Shapin back as starter, they wanted Sawyer Robertson to be starter, and then Shapen gets hurt and Sawyer goes in, he's like, Oh no, he's not near ready, like Joe was talking about.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: And so now you're like everyone's like, when is Shapin coming back?
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: So I was like, now everyone's like, All right, Shapin's our guy, we're going behind him, let's go.
- 31:32SPEAKER_05: Last year I tweeted out at one point because there was a lot of people complaining about Shapin.
- 31:36SPEAKER_05: And again, like there were a lot of games where I was like, I don't know who he's supposed to be throwing the ball to right now, guys.
- 31:41SPEAKER_05: Like, yeah, at some point, like it's not just the quarterback's fault, there are other things at play here.
- 31:46SPEAKER_05: Um, but I tweeted out at one point, I was like, uh, like, I don't think Shapin's all that bad.
- 31:51SPEAKER_05: I've watched Spencer Petrus play this year.
- 31:54SPEAKER_05: Like, I've seen bad quarterback play, and like while while I didn't think Shapin was performing at a high level, it was like, guys, trust me, it gets way worse than this.
- 32:03SPEAKER_05: And that's what happened this year.
- 32:04SPEAKER_05: When Shapen got hurt, there were people that were like, Finally, I get to I told you so, everybody.
- 32:10SPEAKER_05: This coaching staff is stupid.
- 32:11SPEAKER_05: Sawyer should have been starting from oh god, no, like, and that's just kind of how it went.
- 32:15SPEAKER_05: And Matt's right, it very quickly became everyone in the fan base was like, So, so when is Blake when does he come back?
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: It's um it's been uh an injury-riddle season from the quarterback position for both of us, but what hasn't been injury riddled is the run game.
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: Um, you guys, Richard Reese, preseason, all Big 12 type running back.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Richardson behind him, the transfer from Oklahoma State, like you mentioned earlier, Joe.
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: We have Taj Brooks, who I believe is top 10 in rushing right now in the NCAA.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: Cameron Valdez had a great game last week.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: The rush game.
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: What what is it what will it take for the Baylor rush game to get going against this tech defensive line?
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: Which, you know, pass rush, not much for Texas Tech, but defensively on the rush, we've actually been pretty decent this year.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: Wait, Joey told me that it's gonna be better.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: I heard he said it to my face at Media Days.
- 33:16SPEAKER_05: No, no, he said the room was gonna be better.
- 33:19SPEAKER_05: Okay, okay.
- 33:20SPEAKER_05: I think what he meant was they put a fresh coat of paint.
- 33:23SPEAKER_05: So I love Joey.
- 33:24SPEAKER_05: Joey's the best.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: Like, I think the room is unbelievable.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: Joey's positivity is it it consumes you, it really does.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: And you can't, I mean, I like I'd rather a coach be overly positive than overly negative, I guess.
- 33:37SPEAKER_02: But uh man, that the pass rush unit for Texas Tech has been the most disappointing part of this entire team this year.
- 33:43SPEAKER_02: Um, we have two guys on the edge.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: We had the Syracuse transfers, Steve Linton come in.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: We have uh Miles Cole, who was on the team last year, a guy who's the same size as Tyree Wilson, if not bigger.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, 6'6, 285 or something ridiculous.
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: He's huge.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: And neither of those guys have got it going.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: Now, the interior defensive line, fantastic.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: Jalen Hutchings, Tony Bradford, guys that have been here for I think their sixth year, um, they're fantastic, and that's what's helped us in the run game, run defense.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, stopping these guys for the majority.
- 34:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, we we held, I think, Oregon's running back who is killing it this year, to I think 58 yards on 15 carries.
- 34:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's it's it's for real.
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: So I don't know, man.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: I just what does it take for for Richard Reese and Richardson to kind of get it going for Baylor?
- 34:32SPEAKER_05: If we can get on the edges, so Texas really dominated us up the middle like that.
- 34:38SPEAKER_05: Um, so Tevondre Sweat looked like Dominican Sioux out there against us in that game.
- 34:43SPEAKER_05: Like, um, and basically what he did was he just was on the interior, got so deep before the play could develop that you know there was no lane for a Reese or Richardson to find on the outside.
- 34:54SPEAKER_05: But our running game at its core it's the wide zone, you know.
- 34:57SPEAKER_05: We are we are not going hat to hat.
- 35:00SPEAKER_05: The the offensive line is blocking a zone, trying to create lanes, and it's a one cut and go.
- 35:05SPEAKER_05: You know, you hand it to the running back and you trust that they have the vision to see, okay, this is where the hold is, this is where my guys have have won in that space, so I can take it, which you get the advantage of not every single person on the offensive line has to win.
- 35:19SPEAKER_05: You just have to win in certain areas to create the lanes.
- 35:22SPEAKER_05: The problem is if you have somebody that's able to dominate you and push you back, um, it disrupts things.
- 35:29SPEAKER_05: We saw that against um Texas, they were in our backfield.
- 35:32SPEAKER_05: It looked like our offensive linemen were on skates, they just could not block those guys.
- 35:35SPEAKER_05: Um, the first half against UCF, they had this big old freshman, uh true freshman, like a four-star recruit kid, but he looked like he was a senior against us and was really dominating the run game, he ended up coming out of the game in the second half, and that's kind of when we were able to really get things going.
- 35:49SPEAKER_05: So if Baylor is able to find a way to keep your interior pressure from basically disrupting the play, and they can get on the edges and get wide in that zone blocking scheme, they'll gash you for some runs.
- 36:01SPEAKER_05: But if you guys are able to penetrate in the middle or to seal on the outside and beat our tackles, then you can get back there and disrupt things.
- 36:09SPEAKER_05: But it's it's gonna be a cat and mouse game.
- 36:11SPEAKER_05: Um, I think with shape and back, we may try to pass on you guys a little bit more.
- 36:16SPEAKER_05: And there has been a lot of talk this week about we went up tempo in the second half, something we haven't seen from Grimes before, and something our fan base has really clamored for.
- 36:25SPEAKER_05: I mean, let's be honest, we never say his name, but under the Bries offense, we had a lot of fun and we went really fast.
- 36:31SPEAKER_05: And so Baylor fans got used to that.
- 36:34SPEAKER_05: It was a transition to go to this slower, run first kind of you know, progressive passing um offense that we have now.
- 36:42SPEAKER_05: Um, and when we got to go a little tempo last week, there was they found a little bit of magic, so that may be something, another little wrinkle that they add in to try to get things going.
- 36:50SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, I would say you guys have a bit of an advantage with your defensive line over our offensive line, and that is that's a point of worry for me.
- 36:57SPEAKER_05: We may have to throw the ball to open up the run game.
- 37:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's yeah, that's definitely something we're reaching, we're hoping for.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: Um, but Tristan, you know, it's kind of funny what Joe said because we normally like to keep the tempo going at Texas Tech.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's the way Zach Kidley is willing to run his offense.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: It's go, go, go.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: If we get to fourth and one, we're going for it.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: Doesn't matter.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: We're gonna go, go, go to tire out that defense.
- 37:24SPEAKER_02: Um, this year, you now have an elite running back that needs to be utilized, and it's almost better to slow it down a little bit and run the damn ball, as a lot of uh Texas Tech fans are are saying Twitter or T D B very common phrase from Texas Tech fans through the era run the damn ball.
- 37:44SPEAKER_04: It's what we do.
- 37:44SPEAKER_05: It's it's our I remember it from the Baron Batch days, man.
- 37:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Baron Batch, man.
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, but but Taj Brooks is having a hell of a year.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: Tristan he really is.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: How how how do we as Texas Tech utilize him more and continue?
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: Do we continue the same game plan?
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: Do we continue to uh try to you know get the pass game going?
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: What's what's kind of your thoughts on that?
- 38:07SPEAKER_04: Well, I mean, it's it's really basic, but you know, they say it all the time, but it's it's absolutely true, especially in a game like this against Baylor.
- 38:14SPEAKER_04: It's it's gonna be you got to get the run game going, you know.
- 38:17SPEAKER_04: You get you gotta get in the ball in the ball in his hands early and start depending on it more.
- 38:21SPEAKER_04: We saw more in the U of H game.
- 38:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, we really seem Zach Killy was trying to be way too cute for the first part part of the season.
- 38:28SPEAKER_04: Kept relying on these passing plays when all he had to do was run the damn ball because he had this amazing running back and he'll get you those yards, which is all you needed oftentimes was just yards.
- 38:36SPEAKER_04: And I think if you if he gets Hajj going and you actually get him some consistent ball flow, I think we have a lot to be excited about against Baylor.
- 38:43SPEAKER_04: Um, I do think obviously I think Barron has the weapons.
- 38:46SPEAKER_04: Like our wide receiver room is no joke.
- 38:48SPEAKER_04: I just don't think we've really seen it really unleashed yet.
- 38:50SPEAKER_04: Hoping to see some more chemistry with uh Barron Morton and the wide receivers because uh are seriously that that's that should be the best unit on our team is the receiving unit.
- 38:59SPEAKER_04: I know it's weird a running team like Tex Tech traditionally having a really great wide receiver room.
- 39:04SPEAKER_04: That's weird for us, but but it is odd.
- 39:07SPEAKER_04: But like like you said, man, you said at the top of the episode that Taj Brooks is our best player on the team.
- 39:11SPEAKER_04: Um, at least offensive, probably completely, outside of Austin McLamere, of course.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: Um, big punting, big punting guy over here.
- 39:19SPEAKER_04: Big I dude, punting is winning.
- 39:21SPEAKER_04: Punting is winning, as all sick goes know.
- 39:23SPEAKER_04: And since we're fans of these two teams, we are absolute sicko's, so punting is indeed winning.
- 39:28SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, no, Steven, I I I think as boring as it is, you gotta ride that running train.
- 39:33SPEAKER_04: I I really hope we don't get too cute.
- 39:34SPEAKER_04: I only hope we get cute if we have to.
- 39:36SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 39:37SPEAKER_04: I why if we if it's boring and we win, we still win.
- 39:40SPEAKER_05: I've I've never wanted to have to watch out, like as Baylor fans, like we've talked a lot about offense.
- 39:46SPEAKER_05: Give me give me your defensive player that every Baylor fan needs to know.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: Uh you have to start interior defensive line.
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: I already mentioned them Jalen Hutchings and Tony Bradford.
- 39:56SPEAKER_02: Those are your guys that lead this entire defense.
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, you could look outside uh at the safety, you know, kind of hybrid safety corner position.
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, a guy we call Rabbit, who is uh Dadrian Taylor Demerson, number one.
- 40:10SPEAKER_02: He's fantastic.
- 40:11SPEAKER_02: He was kind of dealing with some backspasms against U of H, but he'll be back for this one.
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: He's one of our um extremely elite players, like just tackles hard.
- 40:20SPEAKER_02: Like you're not gonna see that guy miss a tackle very often.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: Um, our corners are good.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: Malik Dunlap has, I think, three interceptions on the season.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: He is uh he's been probably our best corner.
- 40:30SPEAKER_02: Uh linebackers, we dealt with injuries all season long.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: Uh, if Josiah Pierre's back, he's one of our better weapons there.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: Um, really a true kind of leader of the defense.
- 40:41SPEAKER_02: Um, I think he had 14 tackles against Oregon.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: So he's uh he's kind of the guy to watch there.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: But um, it really when it comes down to Texas Tech defense, it comes down to the edge rushers.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: If we can get pressure, we're gonna do fine.
- 40:54SPEAKER_02: Uh what we have not done this year, except for the second half against U of H is get pressure on the quarterback.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: Um, so that's that's really kind of the synopsis of the of the tech defense this year.
- 41:06SPEAKER_05: Well, I'm gonna give I'm gonna give you a name, and I I need it to be burned into your mind because he's a true freshman.
- 41:12SPEAKER_05: So you're gonna you're gonna have to deal with him for a couple of years.
- 41:15SPEAKER_05: Uh whereas number 19, he's a corner.
- 41:19SPEAKER_05: His name is Caden Jenkins.
- 41:21SPEAKER_05: Um my god, is he good?
- 41:23SPEAKER_05: He's he was a three-star out of Louisville.
- 41:26SPEAKER_05: Like I didn't honestly expect him to be a kid that came in and started right away.
- 41:30SPEAKER_05: Um, one Big 12 defensive player of the week this past week.
- 41:33SPEAKER_05: He was the Bronco Negersky national player of the week this past week.
- 41:37SPEAKER_05: He had a pick, he had the scoop and score um in the fourth quarter that really put us back in the game um against UCF.
- 41:43SPEAKER_05: He is six-one, which is huge for a corner, right?
- 41:47SPEAKER_05: Especially at the college level, like 18-year-old kid.
- 41:50SPEAKER_05: Um, but the the magic thing about him is you guys, I need you to be sitting down.
- 41:56SPEAKER_05: He turns and looks for the football when he's in coverage.
- 42:00SPEAKER_04: That's not no, no, he doesn't.
- 42:02SPEAKER_04: It's unbelievable.
- 42:03SPEAKER_04: Like, I know you're trying to pop up your team, Joe, but I need you to chill.
- 42:07SPEAKER_05: There, there was a play, I want to say it was the Utah game where they went deep on him, and Matt and I were sitting there together, and he turned, reached up, and knocked the ball away, and did not commit a penalty because he turned and looked and played the ball.
- 42:22SPEAKER_06: And I looked at Matt and I said, I don't see NFL corners doing that.
- 42:26SPEAKER_06: I didn't even know that was legal.
- 42:29SPEAKER_04: It's some rule, I know it.
- 42:31SPEAKER_05: And I'm just I'm absolutely stunned and blown away by this kid, and I could not be more excited that we have a freshman like him that's on this defense.
- 42:39SPEAKER_05: I'm this as disappointing as this start of this season has been, we are really, and I'm I think you guys are in the same boat, right?
- 42:45SPEAKER_05: Like we're young.
- 42:46SPEAKER_05: There, like you look at our depth chart, and Matt and I talked last week about this, where I don't think we appreciated how how many times we saw FR or SO uh on the depth chart, and it makes me think of like 2017 when we went one and 11, and then that team ended up being the group of guys that won the Big 12 in the Sugar Bowl.
- 43:05SPEAKER_05: Um, because they were just a bunch of freshmen and sophomores, they went through the fire.
- 43:10SPEAKER_05: Um, so you know, I wonder if a big part of that is we haven't been good at using the transfer portal as a program.
- 43:16SPEAKER_05: We've had guys leave, but we're not bringing the same guys in.
- 43:18SPEAKER_05: So that means you got to rely on your younger kids and um because you're not bringing in those upperclassmen.
- 43:24SPEAKER_05: Uh, we we brought in a couple, unfortunately, like Mike Smith transferred from Liberty.
- 43:28SPEAKER_05: We expected him to be an awesome middle linebacker, weak side linebacker, like Matt said, um, towards ACL last week.
- 43:34SPEAKER_05: But stepping into his shoes is a transfer from LSU, a four-star kid named Josh White.
- 43:38SPEAKER_05: Similar to like the Baron Barron Morton thing.
- 43:40SPEAKER_05: Like everybody's like, Man, we want we want to see Josh White play.
- 43:43SPEAKER_05: We want to see Josh White play, and he hadn't been in yet.
- 43:44SPEAKER_05: Well, guess what?
- 43:45SPEAKER_05: It's time for Josh White.
- 43:46SPEAKER_05: We'll see how he does.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thing about Josh White is he's like super fast, like he was clocked at like 20 miles an hour at during a UCF game.
- 43:53SPEAKER_00: So, like his his problem has been reacting, like thinking too much and being a Step behind where the play is, but if he he can move and if he can you know diagnose a play and go full speed, like he could be something special.
- 44:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I will say this, and I mean it'll probably you know it probably bodes well for us with what you've described about Taj Brooks, but um another thing that our defense has struggled with is this thing called tackling.
- 44:23SPEAKER_05: Um where we're not really good at that.
- 44:26SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, it's a little important.
- 44:28SPEAKER_05: We end up getting penetration and then don't complete the play, and it turns into a 15-yard rush.
- 44:34SPEAKER_05: Um, so I don't think there's anything that you guys have offensively that could sting us, you know, with that little bugaboo that we've got going on.
- 44:41SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I I want to touch on the youth thing because Texas Tech was not expecting to rely on our younger players this year.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: We had a very senior-led team going in.
- 44:50SPEAKER_02: We I think we had something ridiculous, like 12 super seniors going into this season.
- 44:55SPEAKER_02: Um, and a lot of those guys are still playing, but due to injuries to uh Jacob Rodriguez, Josiah Pierre, Tyler Shuck, we're having to throw in sophomores and even true freshmen.
- 45:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh, you know, Mikhail Dingle is playing uh a ton as a true freshman at that inside linebacker position.
- 45:13SPEAKER_02: We've been having to play Brendan Jordan a little bit as a true freshman.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: Dylan Spencer's a true freshman on the edge, and that's quite frankly because our edge has been terrible um this year on the pass rush.
- 45:25SPEAKER_02: And so we're just having to try a bunch of different stuff on guys we thought we could rely on, hasn't really been that uh due to injury or due to poor play.
- 45:32SPEAKER_02: So um, yeah, I think y'all are having to deal with it because of necessity.
- 45:37SPEAKER_02: We're having to deal with it because of either poor execution, poor play, or injuries, and it's just been brutal uh on our end.
- 45:44SPEAKER_02: But yeah, man, it it should be interesting.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: See how everything plays out here in the butt bowl.
- 45:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's it's no matter what happened, it's either gonna be a great game or it's gonna be a disgusting game.
- 45:55SPEAKER_05: I both of these teams, I feel like they could lose to anybody by 28 and beat anybody by three.
- 46:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like and so like I can see it going anyway there.
- 46:05SPEAKER_04: Like, so yeah, so so yeah, um, can we can we can we kind of like zoom out a little bit then now that we've discussed the bubble real quick?
- 46:13SPEAKER_04: Uh so I got I got a couple uh uh older Baylor Bear fans here.
- 46:18SPEAKER_04: You know, y'all that don't get me wrong.
- 46:20SPEAKER_04: I know y'all are at Matt at most 30.
- 46:21SPEAKER_04: I'm not calling you old, all right?
- 46:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I know I know y'all are some good.
- 46:25SPEAKER_05: Matt's got a four in his age.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: I got I got two of them, actually.
- 46:30SPEAKER_05: And I am uh four, baby.
- 46:32SPEAKER_05: I am officially I'm officially on the downhill slope to the to the fours.
- 46:37SPEAKER_03: So I won't believe it.
- 46:39SPEAKER_03: No way, no way.
- 46:42SPEAKER_04: But no, uh well, really since you know our our fans, you know, we don't get to hear the other side of how other people, you know, we're obviously having a a huge letdown of the season, a miserable season to put it lightly.
- 46:53SPEAKER_04: It really is.
- 46:53SPEAKER_04: I mean, the Houston game obviously takes some pain out of it, but it has sucked, gentlemen.
- 46:57SPEAKER_04: We have we have I we have been crying, you know, and and and staring into our beer longingly for the more more cursing than crying.
- 47:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:07SPEAKER_04: Hate watching, hate watching.
- 47:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'd like to go, I'd like to go back to the off season of like, holy shit, we can do this, but we're not doing it.
- 47:14SPEAKER_04: And so here we are.
- 47:16SPEAKER_04: Um, so it's been it's been just as brutal for y'all.
- 47:20SPEAKER_04: Uh maybe, maybe even more so.
- 47:22SPEAKER_07: Um because yeah, um, I would trade a Wyoming loss on the road to a Texas State loss at home.
- 47:28SPEAKER_04: I know I I really I really it's not like I want to sit here and like open up a wound or anything like that, but holy guys, whenever I look whenever I saw that score, I was like, is this is this serious?
- 47:38SPEAKER_04: Is how how are y'all how are y'all feeling?
- 47:40SPEAKER_04: Like what's what's going on within y'all's land, you know.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: I'll be honest, like when it was I was watching it and I was like making a mental note of like coaches.
- 47:50SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay, so like Jeff Trailer, let me see, GJ Kenny, like who can who can we bring in?
- 47:56SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, and then I mean personally, like still, like I'm still very I'm not too optimistic still.
- 48:06SPEAKER_05: He's got he's got sus, he's got sus face.
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, and so like it's it all depends on what team shows up.
- 48:14SPEAKER_00: Like if that is something that could spur this team forward for the rest of the year, then I you could absolutely you know salvage this uh season.
- 48:23SPEAKER_00: However, uh me and Joey like we've been at the first four games each game, we've watched all five games, and one half of football does not negate the every other quarter that we've seen.
- 48:38SPEAKER_05: I'll see two halves of football.
- 48:40SPEAKER_05: We looked like world beaters in the first half against Utah.
- 48:43SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 48:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, you played a pretty good team, and I mean, I everybody knows Utah hasn't had their starting quarterback all year, but y'all played him well.
- 48:51SPEAKER_05: I mean, until the very end where basically with in that game, in the second half, they figured out like, huh, if we put our third string quarterback in, he can run and they're gonna put a spy on him.
- 49:01SPEAKER_05: And and and they're weak in the middle, like literally, all they did was like our linebacker was like, Okay, I'm gonna leave zone coverage to cover the quarterback, and then they just sat a wide receiver dead in the middle of the field and kept throwing it there.
- 49:11SPEAKER_05: Like, that's that that's how they beat us in the second half.
- 49:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just I have concerns about having a defensive head coach, and that's the weakest part of your team.
- 49:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's concerning.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: And that that's what I wanted to talk to you all about because Aranda, I mean, not not a great showing this year, as you guys have highlighted.
- 49:31SPEAKER_02: Um what's what's the consensus?
- 49:33SPEAKER_02: How long do you think he has left to prove himself to potentially stay in the green and gold?
- 49:42SPEAKER_05: Nothing would be done mid-season to him.
- 49:44SPEAKER_05: Um, I can like I am 100% certain of that.
- 49:47SPEAKER_05: Like, they're not gonna fire him mid-season.
- 49:49SPEAKER_05: Um, the UCF game went a long way.
- 49:53SPEAKER_05: I think I think Mac Rhodes, our athletic director, like his approach right now is just like, I'm gonna stand back and I'm gonna see what happens.
- 50:00SPEAKER_05: And um, if you know Dave was able to turn this thing around and win six games and make a bowl game, he's perfectly fine and he's safe.
- 50:07SPEAKER_05: And I think to be honest with you, with all the variables of this team this year, I think most Baylor fans would accept that and just be like, Okay, six and six, you know what?
- 50:15SPEAKER_05: Like we weren't world beaters this year, nobody picked us to be.
- 50:18SPEAKER_05: We didn't have a whole lot of expectations, you know, we're we're kind of in a rebuild mode.
- 50:23SPEAKER_05: Uh sure, we'll take six and six.
- 50:25SPEAKER_05: I think most fans would also accept a five and seven, five and seven win year.
- 50:30SPEAKER_05: Um, if you know, depending on what those five wins are, you go to Fort Worth, you beat TCU, and you get five wins, you win at home against Texas Tech, and that adds to five wins.
- 50:39SPEAKER_05: Like, I think at that point it's kind of like, okay, hey, we we would have wished we'd done better, but you know what?
- 50:44SPEAKER_05: You beat some teams that we really want to beat, and beating TCU in Fort Worth to us probably feels better than winning the you know, the cheese it bowl.
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah.
- 50:53SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, at the end of the day, that's what it's gonna be.
- 50:55SPEAKER_05: You know, I can tell you right now, I would have picked beating, you know, not having TCU beat us last year and knocking them out of the playoffs, than you know, beating Air Force and the Armed Forces bowl.
- 51:04SPEAKER_05: Like it, I would have traded that all day long.
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: Which we didn't do, yeah.
- 51:08SPEAKER_05: We did not do.
- 51:08SPEAKER_05: Um, we didn't win.
- 51:11SPEAKER_05: Um but um say we had, but we didn't do we didn't do any of those things.
- 51:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, but yeah, I think I think if he gets to a five like a good contextual five and seven or a six and six, I think he's perfectly safe.
- 51:26SPEAKER_05: He's in dangerous territory if you start talking about four and eight, three and nine.
- 51:30SPEAKER_05: Um, at that point, I think most of the fans are going to demand action be taken.
- 51:37SPEAKER_05: I think Dave Moranda's a really good coach.
- 51:40SPEAKER_05: I the thing that I currently am still questioning is if he's a good coach for Baylor.
- 51:47SPEAKER_05: We are not Texas Tech, we do not have a fan base that is uh what's the right word?
- 51:54SPEAKER_05: As as fanatical as you guys are.
- 51:56SPEAKER_05: We're just not like there are not as yeah, yeah, you guys are crazies, man, and it's great.
- 52:01SPEAKER_05: It makes your fan base special, it makes you annoying at sometimes, but it makes you a special fan base.
- 52:06SPEAKER_05: You don't you guys don't need Joey Maguire to come in there and fire you up.
- 52:10SPEAKER_05: You're fired up no matter what, even during the Matt Wells days, where like it was like very subdued and he probably wasn't the right fit culturally for you.
- 52:17SPEAKER_05: What days?
- 52:18SPEAKER_05: Uh I don't I don't know who you're talking about, but you guys could still get up and get excited for games.
- 52:24SPEAKER_05: Dave Aranda, you know.
- 52:26SPEAKER_05: Um, the way that I've heard him described from some friends of mine is like he's like the philosopher king, and you know, he's he's very thoughtful in his answers and he doesn't often get too fired up.
- 52:37SPEAKER_05: We blocked a kick last week and he actually screamed and shouted and jumped up and down.
- 52:41SPEAKER_05: It was something you rarely see from him.
- 52:43SPEAKER_05: Um, and so he's not gonna be that kind of guy that says, Let's wear flashy uniforms, hey, let's make sure the music is hopping in the stadium.
- 52:52SPEAKER_05: Like, he's not that kind of coach, and I wonder if Baylor needs that because I don't know if our fan base can generate it on our own.
- 52:58SPEAKER_05: I don't know if our administration can generate it on its own.
- 53:01SPEAKER_05: You know, Scott Drew does a very good job on the basketball side of like doing things his way and making sure the way the stadium is set up and the way like the the games that they play and the exposure that they get and the attitude that they have is a certain thing that really keeps the basketball program going.
- 53:19SPEAKER_05: I think that's what hurts the most about losing a guy like Joey.
- 53:22SPEAKER_05: You know, like Joey was that fiery dude, Joey was that big mouthpiece that allowed a guy like Aranda to be who he is.
- 53:31SPEAKER_05: Same thing when Aranda was at LSU.
- 53:33SPEAKER_05: Coach O could be the dude that was just like a wacky, you know, like I'm just here to be, you know, the head coach.
- 53:39SPEAKER_05: I'm Coach O, maybe.
- 53:40SPEAKER_05: And um, you know, and Aranda could be the adult in the room, but it's college football.
- 53:45SPEAKER_05: You can't just have adults in the room, you gotta have a drunk frat dude in there too.
- 53:50SPEAKER_00: Um, so Aranda also had less miles, so like he's out here eating grass, and yeah, Aranda's like, I'm gonna be in the film room.
- 53:57SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, yeah.
- 53:59SPEAKER_05: So, like, you know, with a guy like Aranda, what I hope to see my personal hope is that we move forward with Aranda.
- 54:07SPEAKER_05: I would much rather succeed with Aranda than try to figure out somebody else to do it, but that he brings in Coach O.
- 54:14SPEAKER_05: Like, I would love to see Coach O come in and be like the recruiting coordinator or something like that.
- 54:19SPEAKER_05: That's just a part of this program that gives it that little flash of personality.
- 54:23SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna crush that.
- 54:24SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna crush that right now because I was in Louisiana during all the coach O stuff.
- 54:30SPEAKER_00: My guy got 17 million to leave, and he said, What door you want me to use?
- 54:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, he's leaving his best life.
- 54:36SPEAKER_05: Matt Matt, where was Coach O last weekend when Baylor won their first power five game in 328 days?
- 54:42SPEAKER_05: Oh, he was in Orlando.
- 54:44SPEAKER_05: He was in Orlando on the sideline wearing a Baylor shirt.
- 54:47SPEAKER_05: He's our talisman.
- 54:48SPEAKER_02: He did.
- 54:49SPEAKER_02: He rejoined, he rejoined Twitter, which was fantastic to see.
- 54:52SPEAKER_00: We love coaching immediately in South Beach.
- 54:56SPEAKER_00: Yes, after that game.
- 54:57SPEAKER_02: Wouldn't you?
- 54:59SPEAKER_02: This this is just a good stop.
- 55:01SPEAKER_06: I don't I don't Matt, I don't want him coaching.
- 55:04SPEAKER_06: I want him out there on the recruiting trail once a week, and I want him in the locker room pregame.
- 55:08SPEAKER_06: That's all I want.
- 55:09SPEAKER_06: Well, his son is like on the staff at basically.
- 55:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, his son is a uh is an assistant on the staff.
- 55:15SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay, that makes more sense because I was really wondering why the hell he was there in a Baylor shirt.
- 55:20SPEAKER_02: I was like, what's baby?
- 55:21SPEAKER_04: Baby O works for Aranda.
- 55:23SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
- 55:24SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, so basically, kind of just to to to circle back on that.
- 55:28SPEAKER_04: I I would just I would just think if if if had Dave Aranda been the head coach of Texas Tech, I think I would hope as a rational fan, you know, sober the next day on Sunday, um, that he has won himself enough goodwill at the school to remain there the season, no matter the circumstance.
- 55:49SPEAKER_04: Like even even if Baylor, like I mean, not to win another game is is is a big one, but like it's he's got he's he's brought home a Big 12 title.
- 55:58SPEAKER_04: Obviously, I'm I'm obviously obviously there's there's more stuff going on in the background than just one guy, right?
- 56:03SPEAKER_04: But it's you I would just I would just think, especially coming from a perspective of lacking in that department, that if we if we had a guy like that, I would be like, Are you crazy?
- 56:13SPEAKER_04: What like what are you talking about?
- 56:15SPEAKER_04: Like, just let him, yeah, it's a shit year, but we we gotta we gotta keep our heads on straight.
- 56:19SPEAKER_04: Y'all do not that y'all not have that kind of mentality.
- 56:21SPEAKER_05: I don't do about 80 there.
- 56:24SPEAKER_05: It's just that extra thing of like okay, let's just be on we're dorks, man.
- 56:29SPEAKER_05: We are Baylor is just a big old school of dorks, like we do stupid videos, we're not as fun.
- 56:34SPEAKER_05: Like, we got you know, like we have a religious aspect that we have to stick to.
- 56:38SPEAKER_05: Like, we're the school that it wasn't until like what 30, 40 years ago that we didn't have a dress code at football games, you know, like guys had to wear like leather shoes.
- 56:46SPEAKER_00: Didn't dance on campus till like 1995.
- 56:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like that dance hard news, it's harmful.
- 56:52SPEAKER_05: We're a bunch of squares, and so the only thing is I wonder, I just the the thing that's in the back of my head is like if Aranda doesn't have like a personality type on staff, is he just behind the eight ball on successfulness of keeping this fan base behind him?
- 57:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's fair.
- 57:11SPEAKER_00: Go ahead, man.
- 57:12SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna say, like, my thing about it is like it's year four, and we've seen regression that you don't want to see in year four of your program, and you've already fired your first offensive coordinator, you fired your first defensive coordinator and mentor.
- 57:27SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you're gonna get to replace another coordinator.
- 57:30SPEAKER_00: I don't think you get that luxury it four years into your tenure.
- 57:34SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that's my only thing I would say about that.
- 57:38SPEAKER_05: The other the other part of this half of our guys that won the Big 12 weren't dominating in the NFL right now, Matt.
- 57:45SPEAKER_02: Shout out Jalen Petrie.
- 57:46SPEAKER_02: Uh Terrell Bernard, ASC defensive player of the week.
- 57:49SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 57:50SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 57:51SPEAKER_02: The other part of this is that we are moving into a new era of the Big 12.
- 57:55SPEAKER_02: Uh, we know this.
- 57:56SPEAKER_02: That's the key that's a key.
- 57:57SPEAKER_02: And Oklahoma are leaving the conference after this year, and this conference is open for you can't get left behind.
- 58:05SPEAKER_02: You cannot get left behind.
- 58:07SPEAKER_02: And if you are, and if you are settling for a guy who potentially is a settle and doesn't get your program to the top, I know Texas Tech is worried about this.
- 58:17SPEAKER_02: I know TCU, Baylor, all these programs are worried about this.
- 58:21SPEAKER_02: Kansas State, we there needs to be, and there is open season right now for a new top dog in the conference.
- 58:29SPEAKER_05: And if you can I segue real quick that that that that sentiment makes me so happy that Neil Brown is winning a few games right now.
- 58:37SPEAKER_03: Trust the climb.
- 58:38SPEAKER_03: Hey Joe, watch it.
- 58:39SPEAKER_03: All right, what one of us is a part of the climb, all right?
- 58:42SPEAKER_07: We were a boulder upon that trade trade trade that pit win for more time with Neil Brown.
- 58:47SPEAKER_07: Give him an extension.
- 58:49SPEAKER_02: I I I hate I I hate that we lost to Neil Brown.
- 58:52SPEAKER_02: I hate it so much.
- 58:54SPEAKER_07: No, you guys did you guys did a good thing.
- 58:56SPEAKER_05: It's a good thing for the Big 12.
- 58:58SPEAKER_05: What you did.
- 58:59SPEAKER_05: You sacrificed, you sacrificed.
- 59:01SPEAKER_05: I guess it's a lot.
- 59:03SPEAKER_00: There's a lot going on at West Virginia.
- 59:04SPEAKER_00: I don't know if he would have got fired without those wins because I don't know if they have money to like fire a coach.
- 59:12SPEAKER_00: West Virginia that university's a disaster right now.
- 59:16SPEAKER_02: They're just they're just hanging on to this four and one because I mean everything is just broken over there.
- 59:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, the whole Huggins thing, the way the fan base felt about Neil Brown going into this year.
- 59:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, so I you know, I love West Virginia Twitter.
- 59:30SPEAKER_02: It's one of my favorite parts of Twitter, it really is.
- 59:32SPEAKER_02: I'm so I am happy for those guys.
- 59:35SPEAKER_02: I hate that we freaking lost to the to the Mountaineers because I still believe I know they beat TCU last week, I know they beat us.
- 59:43SPEAKER_02: That team is not good, and I'm not, I will stand by it.
- 59:48SPEAKER_02: Neil Brown made a deal with something.
- 59:50SPEAKER_05: They can run the ball a little bit and they play good defense, which that that's a recipe for winning four games.
- 59:55SPEAKER_00: That was all you needed I guess.
- 59:58SPEAKER_00: They scored what 20 against Jaw, yeah, 17 against Pitt, 24 against TCU.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_00: They're not like scoring a bunch of points and like getting up on people.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_02: They they throw them all 15 times a game.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_02: That's all they do.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_00: They have a good defense, they have a really good defense, yeah.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_00: And that's that's what's winning them games.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_04: So um, yeah, no, not I not to not to simmer too much on the on the season y'all have uh y'all have had, but I just gotta say, um, gosh dang it, guys.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_04: I I can't believe y'all didn't get it done against those damn orange boys leaving the cook leaving the conference.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_04: I but I I I I say that, but I can't imagine how y'all felt.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_04: I I were y'all at like a boiling point where y'all says that pretty low for y'all or we were uh we were sitting in the press box just openly talking shit.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_00: I I left at the beginning of the third quarter, and I left at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_05: I was like it's the only time I've ever left the press box early.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_02: I was like, I'm leaving.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_02: I'm leaving.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_02: I'm um I'm terrified.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm going to that game in Austin uh uh the day after Thanksgiving.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_07: They're they're they're they're they're legitimately a good one.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_00: You'll mark talked all that trash too beforehand.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_02: So for you, I just I just I just keep hoping I just I just keep hoping they keep playing black backup quarterbacks, I guess, because you know they played three of them.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_02: Uh not to mention Wyoming, they played y'all, they played Kansas backup, they played the worst Alabama team in 20 years.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_02: They've you know who else do they play?
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_02: Rice?
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_00: They may lose this week.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm hoping OU just blows them out.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_02: I really am.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_02: Sooner, we're big sooners over here.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_02: Uh but any any final thoughts going into butt week?
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_02: This is obviously this rivalry is still going strong.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_02: We're hyped about it.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_02: Um, any any final thoughts going in?
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_05: I I am on the record of saying that um, and I'm I'm willing this into existence based off of last season that there is a true curse of Joey, and that uh for his tenure while at Texas Tech University, it doesn't matter if Baylor is one and eleven on that on the year, they will have they will beat Joey Maguire.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_05: And so uh that that's that's just how I feel.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_05: There are ghosts that are just saying we look, I love Joey to death.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_05: I I absolutely adore the guy, and I root, I'm gonna root for him 11 games out of the year, but he's gonna lose against us every year.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_05: It's just the way it is.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_05: Sorry guys, it's just the way it is.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_05: Damn it.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_00: I think I really think it's gonna be a very entertaining game.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_00: I think just it it may be kind of like that 2019 game to where it's like you know, super close all the way through.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_00: May not be pretty, may not be the prettiest football you've seen, but it'll be entertaining.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_00: So that's what I think we're in store for.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_05: I think it's gonna be like watching a video of two friends just kick each other in the nuts over again.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_05: Like it's just that's just what it's gonna be.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_05: Like, it's just gonna be nutshot after that.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_00: I could see it like that.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_00: Like, I could see like there has there were 12 turnovers between these two teams this game.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_02: It's like, oh my god, Barron Morein just threw a pick six.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, next play, Blake Shabin throws a pick six.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech runs the runs the kickoff back for a touchdown.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_00: Like or to be like, oh that we Baylor just intercepted it.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, they fumbled it.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_00: Tech has the ball back.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_07: It's just gonna be the uh it's gonna be the uh the Frank Beamer meme of just hands near zero to zero into regulation.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_02: I I thought going into this week there was gonna be a lot more self-deprecating uh than there was right now because we're both coming off wins, but um, yeah, I and to Joe, to what you said, there's there can't be a curse after one year.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_02: You can't call it a curse.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_02: I ain't afraid of no ghosts, it's not gonna happen.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_02: Tristan, who you got?
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_02: Who you got?
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_04: Damn it.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_04: I you know whenever whenever whenever we whenever we did the preseason pod with with with our Bear Boys here, and we were thinking that Texas Tech was going to win the national championship.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_03: Um six and oh start, by the way, is what I predicted.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_04: Um, I I I actually had us losing the bayl.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_04: I had us losing to Baylor.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_04: Um, and we could absolutely still lose the Baylor, but you know, I think I have a little more confidence in what Texas Tech has shown versus Baylor, just like just objectively speaking, for game for game.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_07: Man, uh beating a the beating a team like the University of Houston Cougars really does instill a lot of uh a lot of hope.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_04: Well, I I mean at least at least it's not exactly that school in San Marcus there, Joe.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_05: All right, let's let's we just beat like what the 2017 national champions, all right?
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_00: Hey, they uh they're a good team.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, no, I I'm gonna I'm gonna go tech in a tight one, man.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_04: This this butt's gonna be tight, boys.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's gonna be tight either way.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_02: I think there's no way one side blows out the other.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_02: I just think that you got two you got two football teams that may just not want to win uh at points in here.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_02: Um what I do know, and what I'm going to predict is that we are gonna have a great time in Waco coming up this weekend.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_02: Seeing you guys, we are ready to freaking go.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_02: We're ready to get so hammered that we can't see this bad football that's about to be put on the field.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_05: Um it's a tailgate that just happens to have a football game.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm also I'm also curious, very curious to what this ritual is.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_02: I am ready to see this ritual.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_02: Pardon me, all right.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_02: We have a treat this week, too.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's uh and I'll tell you like basically what the ritual is is, and we're actually gonna have the the architect, the creator of the ritual.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he was born during COVID when we couldn't go to games.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_05: And our friend uh Mike thinks aloud on Twitter, diehard Baylor fan that lives down here in Houston.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_05: Um, he's a connoisseur of whiskey, like very, very like high end whiskeys that should not be drank fast.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_05: And um, he decided that he was going to take some very expensive whiskey and take a shot of it as a ritual before.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_05: Every single Baylor game during the COVID season.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_05: So it kind of caught on like wildfire that we all just started going buying expensive bottles of whiskey and shooting the whiskey uh before the Baylor game.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_05: So, like he will go on Twitter, he records, he likes he sits down and he writes like a grand speech that he gives, making fun of the other team.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_05: He records a video of it and then posts that on Twitter, and then everybody else does it.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_05: And so we started doing it at our tailgate as well.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_05: He's actually gonna be there this weekend.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_05: I don't know what whiskeys have been chosen.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_05: Uh against Texas, we brought out the Blantons, which was uh a really, really nice tape.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_05: Um, but I I don't know what the guys are bringing this year.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_05: I'll have to check the tailgate Discord we have.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_00: I know he's uh very special stuff.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_00: He's a Mickners fan, so I don't think we're gonna have to do that.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it might be some Mickers.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_02: Okay, well we're we're ready if you will allow us to partake.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_04: That would be they're gonna make me drink expensive whiskey.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_04: Oh no, oh no, please do I have to keep my clothes on?
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_04: Oh, I mean, or do the clothes stay on, or like I don't know.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_00: Are we gonna do like a live stream on your OnlyFans?
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, what's going on?
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I was just saying, like the content demands what the content demands.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_04: So I just I'll just check it in.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_04: But I mean, but we'll see we'll see when we get there.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_04: We'll cross that bridge when we get there, you know.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_04: I mean, Kristen, we're gonna have to keep it.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_04: That bridge is built in Waco now, isn't that great?
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_02: How about you?
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_02: No more traffic, yeah.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_02: All right, fellas, it has been fantastic as always to have you guys on the podcast.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_02: As you know, what we do here on the talk and tech podcast is we give the people something to listen to after they've listened to this podcast, something to jam to, something you're vibing with with a song of the week.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_02: We'll start with Joe, we'll go to Matt, we'll then go Tristan, and then I'll finish off.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_02: Song of the week.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_02: What do you got?
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_05: All right, so this one it actually popped up in my Spotify recommended recently, and I I consider it like a forgotten banger.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_05: It popped up.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_05: I heard it playing in my car, and I was like, oh my god, I forgot this song existed.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_05: I used to absolutely love this song.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_05: I used to put it on repeat, and I've been listening to it a ton ever since.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_05: My song of the week, boys, is the best of me by the starting line.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_02: Very, very nice.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_02: Starting us off strong.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_02: And you know, I had one of those uh pretty recently, and it's not the oldest of songs, but like what Collard Greens by School Boy Q came on like a couple weeks ago, and I was like, I completely forgot this song existed, and I loved this in high school, so yeah, I know that feel very well.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_02: Matt, what do you got for us?
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_00: So, in honor of Texas Tech and Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, their newfound friend, Taylor Swift, Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_00: The song should have been a single, it's a very good song.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_00: I don't know why this was a single off of the lower album, but there you go.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_05: It was a cruel August and September for us.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_05: Oh, indeed.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_02: Matt, Matt, that is Taylor Swift's like best song.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_02: So thank you for giving that to us.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_02: And I think we had a song, I think what we have a Taylor Swift song of the week like not too long ago.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_04: Anytime we have our wives pick, oh, it's gonna be a Taylor Swift song.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_04: That's true, that's true.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_02: We got a bunch of Swifties that we married.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, but yeah, appreciate that pick, Matt, as always.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_02: Tristan, what do you got?
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_02: All right, boys.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_04: All right, I got a good one for y'all.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_04: All right, you know, I I I I work I work with uh work with teenagers, so I this one popped up because it's all over TikToks and stuff.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna, but it's it's a throwback, y'all, and it really fits the vibe for the weekend because I would travel a thousand miles by Vanessa Carlton to go to this tailgate in game with the boys.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_04: Let's go.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_04: All right, that's what I'm talking about.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_02: You love to see it.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_02: Uh banger, banger, white chicks, do da doo doo.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, fantastic.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_05: It's a never skip.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_05: A never skip.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_02: Never skip.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_02: It'll come on at any wedding, and it's just the whole crowd gets crazy for it.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_04: White person anthem.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_02: Uh okay.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_02: White.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_02: I I will finish this off here because and I think this song is very well suited for especially me and Tristan right now, and the artist.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_02: The artist I'm choosing is Wade Bowen, who of course was born Waco, Texas.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_02: Decided to get out of there and decided the right choice was to go to Texas Tech, at least for a while.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_07: I'm surprised, like out of the multiple options you have.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_07: You went with you didn't go with the cliche there.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_07: So I'm happy.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_02: I know, right?
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_02: I got you.
