Welcome back to the Pac-12, your favorite podcast for all things Pac-12. Salmon Nash back again with my two fair co-hosts in San Marcus, Brad Beerman and Caden Bessant. Talked about a little bit of everything these past couple weeks, and we're gonna talk about a little bit more football as it is gearing up for week one, week zero in the books already. No Pac-12 teams there, so don't worry, you didn't miss anything in that department. But a little bit of news coming from the Pac-12. Fresno State names their official QB1. for the season, at least for week one, it's gonna be redshirt junior Jaden Mandel beating out Maryland transfer, Christian Martin. How do we feel about that? He only has one career start. It is fourth year at Fresno. It was a battle that they were going through all of fall camp. ⁓ Christian Martin is the one I talked about in the preview. ⁓ we don't know anything about any of these quarterbacks, so we're all kind of going in a little blind here. ⁓ Jaden Mandel has been with Fresno State now for his fourth year. He's technically a junior I he redshirted a year. Played in the Idaho Potato Bowl in 2024 and I think got pulled after the first drive. So interesting. We don't have much on him. And I and and correct me if I'm wrong, I believe he got hurt. I tried to find it last night. I believe he just got pulled. But interesting to say the least. I thought they were gonna go with Christian Martin. ⁓ I guess Jade Mendel just pulled away. ⁓ Matt yeah, Matt Ents talked about it. ⁓ I I I wrote down a quote here. ⁓ when I break it down, timing accuracy were probably the two biggest things that stood out, and ball security was the other one. ⁓ we wanna minimize poor decision making, we wanna minimize turnovers, and we wanna minimize extra possessions by our opponents. So clearly they're going with the guy who they think is gonna protect the ball a little better, ⁓ prevent turnovers for him. I think that's a good decision by by Coach Ents. ⁓ and I think it's gonna really show this weekend against USC. I think he went the right route on measuring it through, you know, timing and accuracy. Right. You want a guy that makes good decisions, turning the ball over is not gonna help whatsoever. So I think there's a right way to go right there and Fresno State's a very interesting team. Jaden Mandal's got he's got a lot to do. I mean he's got a lot of weight on his shoulders because Fresno State certainly has the upside to be ⁓ somebody very impressive this year. So interested to see what happens there. And you mentioned we don't know a lot about the quarterbacks. I mean Jaden Dinegal, Brad Jackson, and Maddox Madsen. Who else is returning to their team? I'm trying. Not Colorado State, not Oregon State, not Washington State, not Fresno State. This quote is really catching my eyes when he says we want to minimize poor decision making and turnovers 'cause I mean obviously that's coach talk, but when you really think about it, this is a g guy with one career start. So I'm really interested to see how well he did at camp for him to really feel confident in starting him against USC in a game where he believes that he can minimize poor decision making and turnovers. Whereas coming a guy from the Big Ten, Christian Martin, I mean I mean I'm just really interested to see how this quarterback paddle wit, given the implication of these quotes. Listen, this is not from me having any expert opinion on Fresno State. I was shocked by this choice. But I think I will be proved wrong. Yeah. Yeah, I mean you feel okay about it, 'cause like this is your team, dude. I think this is my team. I I'm with my co I'm with my coach, man. I'm with I'm with Coach Ans till I die. All right. All right. There is a lot of weight on Jaden Mandel because we all did pick Fresno State to win the pack twelve as well. Yeah, actually this rides on you guys too. Don't don't put all that on me. Nah, it's on you. You previewed them. But alrighty. Next up on the chopping block, San Diego State, not naming a starter, but instead naming a Jersey patch. They announced a multi year partnership with Palomar and Palomar Insurance. The new patches will debut this week against Portland State. So San Diego State does add their hat in the The game in the jersey patch game. What more do we need to say? It's these teams need to get on, they need to get on fast, and San Diego State's just the next one up. This big though. That's really the week of. You gotta get the patches made, then you gotta put them on all the football jerseys. There's like a hundred. Those equipment managers are working right now. ⁓ yeah, they're pissed. They are pissed. They are so pissed. Luckily, San Diego State does not have to go on. If they had to do all that and also go that'd be even worse because you gotta load up the truck, get the stuff sent, whatever. All that. ⁓ yeah. So half the Pac twelve now has jersey patches, right? Mm-hmm. Yeah, I think they're just we're just down to a few schools. Texas State, San Diego State, and was the other one Fresno, or was it somewhere? It was Fresno. It was yeah, Fresno Fresno. I was gonna say Boise, but we talked about Boise not having we were shocked that they didn't have it. They're probably up next, like to be honest. I wonder if you can ink one in the middle of the season. I think so. It's not hard to get jersey patches on, like just stitch it on. Yeah. There definitely like will be one midweek during yeah. I wouldn't be surprised if these like sponsors do like fun stuff too. Like I wouldn't be surprised if Monster like did like an alternate patch for something with the big twelve. But yeah, that'll do it for that part of the housekeeping. We're gonna move on for a quick coverage of men's soccer as number twenty five ranked team in the nation, Oregon State, defeated the reigning national champions, number eleven, Washington Fox. Four to three in Corvallis on Sunday. Wyatt Borso drilled aheader for the game winner on a corner in the sixty seventh minute. All four of Oregon State goals came in the second half. What an insane W for the men's soccer team, Oregon State, man. Soccer's been a lot of fun this year. Yeah. ⁓ we don't really do men's soccer over here 'cause n it's not what, maybe two to four lot of schools in the pack two that don't have a men's soccer. Yeah. And there's just some things we can't talk about, you know. Unfortunately we had to cut some things out. Yeah, you know what I mean? Like I I don't think there's anybody sitting here waiting for us to talk about men's soccer. But I hope you're not. You've been waiting a while. This is a win so they're fixed. Such a big win. I thought it was worth mentioning. ⁓ defeating the Raid National Champs, plus it's Oregon State beating Washington. Those two states hate each other when it comes to sports. So that was sweet, wide borso. That was an insane goal too. Yep. I think all four goals. I watched the clips. They were all kind of from crazy, to be honest. I mean, they all came in the second half, so I wouldn't be surprised if it just shot anything at that point. Screw it. You're playing against the Rick. They just drilled it. It goes in, it goes in, mate. But that'll do it for men's soccer. We could talk about the big main event. It is football. Week one. Let's just jump right into it, gentlemen. You know, week one's here, guys. You know, I know y'all are excited. I'm excited as well. It's gonna be some fun stuff. So can't ready to get into it and very happy to be here. So thank y'all. You share company with some special people, man, ⁓ Nate Gadder and and you. So that's it. Yeah, as far as our guests so far. So I think he might be even better, dude. Week zero wrapped up. No Pac-12 teams in action for that one, but all eyes are on the first week of the season. We have a plethora of games, a lot of out-of-conference big power four opponents. So we can just read off all of them. Starting off on the Friday night slate, beginning it up is Presno State versus USC. USC did play week zero. We'll talk about them a little bit later. Saturday, number fourteen, USA. Thank you, Caden. And then Saturday, Oregon State will begin against Houston, number twenty three Houston in the country. Then followed by Boise State taking on the second team in the land, the Oregon Ducks, then Texas State taking on top five team, UT and Austin. And then Wyoming taking on Colorado State, former Mountain West matchup there. And then Idaho State taking on Utah State in Logan. And then last night on that game will be Portland State, San Diego State. And then Sunday game, it's week one, so no NFL quite yet. So we get Sunday and Monday games. So Sunday will be a little bit Apple Cup action between Washington State and UW. So that's our slate so far. We could pick and choose any game we want to talk about first. Do we want to talk about the Friday game because we have tape on the US C. Yes. So as I have said previously, ⁓ we talked about in our superlatives episode that I thought this would be an upset. I still think it could be. ⁓ the spread is twenty two and a half. Obviously that's a big scary number, right? ⁓ three scores up on number fourteen team in the country. I still think that Fresno State can pull this off. I I get it, USC's defense looked a lot better. I mean, in game one against San Jose State, regardless, you know, take it with a grain. ⁓ But Fresno State's got a new quarterback coming in and I think it could be ⁓ it could be a shocker for people. And I think, you know, their defense did look better. You know, we've seen US C defenses in the past where, you know, that secondary is pretty Swiss cheese. So it's it's definitely a little better than that. But, you know, still did give up twenty six to a San Jose State team who I think, you know, lost their quarterback Walker Eaget, believes the starter over at Duke now. So, you know, offense that's rebuilding a little bit, still scoring twenty six does scare me a little bit. And then I mean, Jaden Mandel, we'll see how he performs. It's gonna be it's gonna be ⁓ Pretty pretty interesting to see on Monday he was named the starter over ⁓ Christian Martin, the Maryland transfer. So I mean excited to see how he plays and if they can score points, you know, they'll be able to hang around. I think I think it'll be a high scoring game. And I do want to talk about that defense. It did look pretty good, but an interesting stat I did see against San Jose State throughout all four quarters, USC only recorded one set. That's a Lincoln Riley defense for you. I mean, I'm just saying that's a little bit alarming. Well, I'm saying if that front seven's not ready to go for you at C Fresno State's identities, they're gonna try to run right down your throat. So if they're able to do that and get the running game going, then they're able to move into the play action and stretch the ball down the field. I couldn't see trouble, but Jaden Maiava looked really good last week. I know who he played, but like he looked really good. You know, he's supposed to look really good. I do think Fresno State has a chance. I think a hundred percent that they. Could and should cover the twenty two and a half spread though, no problem. And it's interesting you say that about Mayava because I feel like there was a lot of reports coming in the off season saying that he's kinda taking the next step. Saw it a little bit in that week one, but you know, now you got I mean, maybe the same quality of team Fresno State, maybe a little step ahead of San Jose, so we'll see we'll see how he plays in week two or week one. I personally d I'm not a big ⁓ Myava Kool Aid drinker, but He did look pretty decent. He only played three quarters against San Jose State 'cause they blew him out pretty quickly. But I think this could be they c if they can just make him a little bit uncomfortable, he doesn't do that great against the pressure. He's not like a Caleb Williams guy. He he's he very much plays in system. But I mean obviously he could dot you up. Him and Tram Mosley. Tram Moseley went for seven catches and almost one twenty yards last game. So they could easily give him trouble there. But I don't think my always the worst quarterback you could be facing in your first game. No it's it really stinks for sorry to interrupt you, Caden. It's it really stinks for USC's front seven, as you guys mentioned. You got Ray Sean Luke and Brian Donaldson coming down your throat. That's gonna be tough. Pause. That's gonna be tough. Hey, no, I think this is a good test for Fresno State for week one and then for, you know, one, two, three, four other teams are getting really good tests early on, and that's a good thing because we know when we get to conference play, it it's gonna be people beating up on each other in the top five spots. So And You I I like that you bring that up too because that's that's gonna be a concern and something to look at as you go through the season and as you to get towards the end of the season is how much the Pac twelve beats each other up. Just because, you know, when you're when you're looking at that auto bit up for graphs and yeah, and you're looking at who who's the you know, the final group of five team that's gonna be the one standing, that's gonna be huge. So getting these matchups early on, strengthening all these teams, we'll see how that plays a factor later in the season. 'Cause I don't think the American is as tough near the top and I think that they won't beat they won't beat each other up as much. And that plays into their advantage, you know. Speaking of college football playoff talks, I want to talk about this a group of five team that has seen the college football playoff field before. They're taking on the number two team in the land on Saturday, Oregon. This could very well be a college football playoff game at the end of the season. If Boise State locks up the Pac twelve bit in Oregon, I mean they're gonna do Oregon things. At least they're projected too, but this game low key kinda interesting. I think so. ⁓ we're gonna see what Maddox Madsen's looking like in his final year in a really tough place to play against an Oregon team that is projected to be like, Hey, Dan Lanning, if you're gonna do it, you better do it now. ⁓ so I think it'll be interesting. But I think, you know, week one, Eugene's rocking. I mean I don't know, Boise. This one's gonna be tough. I think Boise competes up until like middle of the third quarter, maybe early third quarter. And then they're just depth and they just run out of gas. Because we know the gap between an Oregon and a Boise State is gonna be guys on the bench. That's what it I think the moral victory this for ⁓ Boise State this week needs to ⁓ their defense. Jane Virgin Morgan. Yeah. And and I don't think we talked about this. Was the only group of five player in the ESPN top one hundred college football players this year? Very interesting. I thought that was worth noting. And their transfer Jericho Washington from Kennesaw. It's just gonna be moral victories this week. Like how how how much can you kind of stuff Oregon's offense? I'm with I'm with Brett. You know, moral victories are gonna be huge because this Oregon team is super talented. And like Caden was mentioned, Austin Stadium, super tough place to play, you know. It's gonna be obviously tough to get a win out of here, you know. It's it's five point two percent chance on, you know, ESPN. But hang around, you know Give yourself a chance to make some noise in the second half is what I'd say. You know? If Oregon pulls away in the second half, they pull away. But yeah, this is gonna this is gonna be a good one for Boise State and yeah, it'll it'll help an out it help ⁓ out a lot. Do they cover the twenty four and a half spread? No. No. No. No, I think they lose that late. I think Yeah, it'll be garbage times kind of stuff. Yeah. But I think the one thing about all these ranked matchups week week one for these Pac twelve schools is ⁓ it's the first game of the season for all these schools. So you're getting a chance to maybe catch them flat footed, but then at the same time you can't go out there and be flat footed in your first game of the season. So it does get tricky that way. And then pretty much ⁓ yeah, every single one of these teams playing a ranked team, it's on the road. So that ⁓ just makes it a lot worse. And another one of those teams that a ranked team that did start pretty flat footed last year, University of Texas number five. They will be hosting Texas State. At two thirty on ESPN. That spread is almost at thirty, twenty nine and a half. But I mean it should be a good it should be the atmosphere should be amazing for that game. Yeah, I think it should be an amazing atmosphere, you know, not very far. It's been kinda weird for me, you know, coming down here and then driving back up, passing by both stadiums. Haven't loved that very much. But ⁓ Yeah, ⁓ it's it should be a good matchup. I'm I'm interested to see how Texas State's offense looks, you know. Yeah, that's a really formidable defense. And feel like there's a lot of reports and you know, I feel like there's some people underestimating the Bobcats. This isn't a rollover, you know, group of five team. I think there's some people that are expecting, you know, no chance the Bobcats score more than three. And I just don't think that's a reasonable, you know, thing. Like this is a solid offense. You know, Sparks, Jackson, Don running game is, you know, down a little bit, but we'll we'll we'll see how it pans out. But I think I think that the Bobcats will We'll surprise some people, but it it should still be, you know, quite a bit. I think I think it'll be close on the twenty nine and a half is what I'm seeing right now. I think that'll be decided in the last possession. Yeah. I ⁓ I have a hard time believing that Texas State won't put up at least two touchdowns with that offense, right? And I understand Texas defense is pretty pretty solid, but Yeah, lost some guys not too long ago and then at the same time you think about it. ⁓ new D C as well for that. Yeah. Both teams are coming in with the new D Cephes State is it is I a great D C but still the new D C plays an impact in any system. Yeah. I just don't want Texas State fans to get discouraged by anything that happens this weekend with Will Windham's defense 'cause you're playing Texas and you could potentially be playing the quarterback who could win the Heisman. So take everything this weekend with a grain. Enjoy it. What if they win? I ain't taking that with the grain. I'm taking that with a thirty rack to the face. Brother if brother if they win San Marcus might blow up if they win. Yeah. Yeah. I I can't I don't even know what would happen 'cause it just doesn't seem like I could definitely see like the s square being set on fire. If like San Marcus comes away with that win. It'd be like it probably would. I'd be like the Knicks winning the final. Yeah. It'd be like the Knicks winning the final. Literally, maybe. Yeah, like it would single handedly be the biggest accomplishment. It probably like Texas Day is. Pro ⁓ yes. I think ten times up like I think the other second biggest accomplishment, which is important to note, it was ⁓ on this day or yesterday. ⁓ however many years ago today, like early two thousands when Texas State first year in FBS, I should know this. But they went in on the road to Houston, who's coming off a thirteen and one season as thirty four and a half point dogs, and they won by twenty seven points, I believe, and that was like the biggest like spread upset in like the history. That's up there. I know there was Just saying. Cinema. I remember the one that's up there is ⁓ Stanford USC in the old Pac twelve. There's like a thirty-five and a half point spread and Stanford won it outright. So that's that's pretty cool. That's incredible, man. Yeah. Pac twelve history for you. Speaking of Houston, it's a little bit different looking team now in twenty twenty-six with Connor Wegman at quarterback, but they're number twenty three in the land and taking on Oregon State. Oregon State just then their starting quarterback not too long ago. And this is a team who's not really looking to do anything crazy, but I mean it's still a pretty good week one matchup to test yourself. This spread I cannot believe it is only twenty and a half. Yeah, I was just gonna say compared to USC's at twenty two and a half, Oregon at twenty four and a half. And Texas State, Texas at twenty nine and a half. I think this is probably the biggest s gap of talent separation on on the matchups. And that's not saying I mean it's free. I I it might be. It might be. Because Houston's a really good team. Like that's not saying anything about Oregon State and not even saying how how bad I think they're gonna be. Sorry, sorry, Caden, I know you're a fan, but he was a Malik Murphy. That's it. I do believe in Jamarcus Shepard. I truly believe one. I truly believe this team's gonna finish last in the Pac twelve. I'm comfortably saying that. I think Houston's gonna put fifty on them. You know how sad it'd be if a team that's an OG Pac twelve member comes in and finishes last in the first year of the new Pac twelve? I it's it's looking kind of funny. For them, for them, they just gotta be happy Colorado State exists. If you're Oregon State, just be glad that the Rams exists. Colorado State's gonna win six games this year. Like Oregon State couldn't win three. P like I I do think Oregon State gets some trouble on the road at Houston here. I I had to learn that Houston was as good as they were. I was kinda shocked they were twenty three. I wasn't aware. I mean I knew about ⁓ Waggle. I mean, I just even remember in the back of my mind Oregon State and Houston last year. That was a absolute barn burner of just a terrible game. But it was great. And yeah, I just wasn't expecting Houston to come in. As high as they are, but I do think the gap is very big. interested to see Braden Atkinson. That's true. Yeah. Yeah. I think that'll be interesting. I think he throws at least a couple titties. I would hope. I don't think it's gonna be a couple, man. You think one? Maybe. Maybe. I don't I don't even predict his stat line right now. Former ⁓ Cougar right here. Former ⁓ Cougar. Former ⁓ Cougar, that's right. Predict his stat line. One eighty six yards. Okay. ⁓ zero touchdowns, one interception. You know you can go Try the pass completion. That's like my favorite part about it. Completion percentage? ⁓ I'll say thirty nine point seven. I always love throwing that a little tidbit in. He's gonna have like 110 yards on like thirty attempts. Yeah, they're gonna they're gonna air it out and listen, they're gonna hit a couple. It's the blind squirrel finds a nut, right? But it's not gonna be good for the Beavers this weekend. I'm sorry. It's not gonna be really good for any of these teams this weekend, unfortunately, but we're gonna learn a lot. Except one. No, there's some good matchups in Linux who will win. The only Pac-12 team who is favored this weekend, Colorado State taking on Wyoming. Team that is projected damn near last in the conference is favored. Yeah, my bad. One of two. My bad. I forgot San Diego State. I think there's three. Utah State and San Diego State. Utah State as well. ⁓ shit. There's three. Well, like to be fair, they're like the only ones playing the FBA. That's true. Division one is the The only teams that are favored are the ones not playing ranked to play. True. Fair. Yeah, the matchups are the matchup difference is incredible because you're playing like USC, Houston, Oregon, Texas. And then on the other side you have Wyoming, Idaho State, Portland State. Like Yeah. And then you have the Apple Cup, which will be awesome. I do think that Wyoming, Colorado State is super interesting. Colorado State favored by three. They still haven't even announced a starter. I looked this up last night. It's ⁓ what I read was that Jim Moore Jr. is waiting. Until they walk out on the field to show everyone who the starter is. To hide his game plan so they don't know who to game plan for. That's so WWE man. Yeah. It's a good strategy. I mean, there's a team that's familiar with like the program. Last year Wyoming won against Col granted a whole new team and coaching staff. Yeah. But Wyoming did beat Colorado State twenty eight to zero. Like they skunked. And Wyoming's still a really good football program. Yeah. I'm Well I'm gonna go with the well yeah. I'm gonna go with the points here. I'm gonna take Colorado State. I think Colorado State's gonna show us what they can be. I think the Jim Moore era starts off with the win. ⁓ I think it's about as close as three points. Shoot, they might not even cover the spread. They might win by one or two. Yeah. But I think they're gonna come out and they're gonna look ⁓ pretty disciplined. All right. That's how they were at UConn under Jim Moore, and I I think this is gonna be a good start to the era, but I mean it only gets tougher after playing Wyoming. But I do think they get the border war this year. And I also love their new Adidas jerseys and I love those the alternate ones, the great orange ones. Yeah, those orange kits are whoo I could very well see this game being like thirteen and like seven. Yeah. I love it. And hey all these things are on national T V so you can watch every single game. That will be that's beautiful. And the Colorado State will be the first game on the USA channel for the Pac twelve. Let's go. So, you know, they got at least the closest game spread wise here. So, you know, big dubs for them. And then we talk about Utah State taking on Idaho State. They're favored by twelve and a half. FCS tune ups. You go one way for week one. You either go a tune up for your team or you know, fr in the frying pan. Or you make some money. What's crazy is Utah State's only favored by tomorrow. Yeah. I think that's I think that's respectable. I don't think Utah State's gonna be But you don't believe in Bronco Mendeho and the boy. I do. I don't know. I believe in Bronco Mendoza. Them pulling those carriages didn't inspire you. It didn't know. It low key made me hate them more, and I didn't want to say that, Caden, 'cause you were so excited about it, but Dude, I love it. I think I think if it wasn't for Oregon State, Utah State would probably be last. I don't think they're gonna make a bowl game. Wow. I don't think Utah State's gonna be bad. Well, McKay Hillstead's leading the way. Bang. Bang. K. Hillstead. Redshirt Jr. Just hearing his name for the first time. That's the guy from BYU, right? Yeah. Yeah. He went from Utah State to BYU. Now he's back at Utah State. Yeah, he played as a true freshman in 2023 at Utah State. Two years at BYU and now he's back. That was the last time he got back. Sometimes you gotta go back to go forward. You know what? Yeah, and hopefully he's able to go forward and lead touchdown drives on the Idaho State FCS school. Then following that, San Diego State with the biggest spread of the slate. Taking on Portland State forty and a half. Yeah, we don't gotta talk about this long. Lucky Sutton, give me three touchdowns next. What is 120 yards? Whatever the line on Lucky Sutton bet the over. Yeah. I I think he's gonna hit like over one fifty. Dude, shoot he it might not even the line might not even hit because they winning by so much they take him out. Probably. That's what's tricky about these games in my blowouts. That's true. That's true. I do think Lucky Sutton though, give me a hundred yards to Tuds. Easy. Yeah. Easy. And then rounding us off. Sunday night. Well, I don't know if it's a night game. I hope it is. Yes, if there's gonna be an upset, I think the most realistic one is this one. That's not ridiculous to say, especially when we consider Caden Pennick. They went seven and five last year. Yeah. And this is only the first year of Kirby Moore. They retained a okay amount of people from that team that went seven and five. They competed with Ole Miss on the road last year. And now they got Caden Pennick. I they definitely cover twenty three and a half. I think if there is an upset, there's a real chance. Rivalry game makes me think there's even more of a chance just 'cause of how that works. I I'm sticking with Washington's There's just a lot of love for Washington this year. Like I've just heard nonsense. I look he don't understand it either. And and maybe yeah, I just maybe I just don't know anything about them, but it's like i from all these like talking heads that I hear saying like if there's a team outside the top ten who could sneak into the national championship, it's Washington. I'm just like, why? I don't think so. Is Demon is Damon Williams still their quarterback? Yes. Yeah. Okay. But that's that being said, they're not even like the sixth best team in the Big Ten. The thing about it is, like, that's why that's why I want to bring it up. I don't believe in him because he wanted to leave the program. Like, do not people not remember that he transferred to LSU but he couldn't because of a clause in his contract. So he's was obligated by contract to stay on this team.
