Ontario's Venomous Rattlesnake on the Move
Ontario’s only venomous rattlesnake, the Eastern Massasauga, is becoming more active this summer — and you might just spot one near wetlands, shorelines, or cottage country. With stout bodies and saddle-shaped markings, these shy snakes only bite if threatened, and bites are rare — fewer than a dozen reported each year, with no fatalities in 40 years. Found mostly along Georgian Bay and the Bruce Peninsula, their range is shrinking due to habitat loss and roads, so if you’re exploring near the Great Lakes, watch your step.
