- 0:30five forty three forty three. That's five three five four three four three.
- 0:34Andrew, how is your Christmas? How is your New Year? How you
- 0:37doing? My friend? I'm doing great. They were all great, Tim
- 0:42glad they're over. I don't know. We had a lot of family over,
- 0:49had a great time and I was really glad when everyone went home.
- 0:53Yes, One of the things I know about you as well is you love
- 0:59what you do. You love being busy, and I know obviously when you
- 1:03have family and other things over that h that creates situations where you've gotta you've
- 1:08gotta be a family man, and you got of course your first priority is
- 1:11family and and that. But I know you love getting back to work and
- 1:15getting back to what you guys do at Larsen Home Services. And this has
- 1:19been and I say this every winter, this has been a bizarre winter and
- 1:23there's probably more bizarre things to come. Mark my word on this which is
- 1:27still bizarre when it just becomes the normal. It's very true. At some
- 1:32point we just got a yes, it is. It is. And and
- 1:34with those cold temperatures, something that many years ago I had never thought anything
- 1:41about. I always thought when it came to home performance and taking care of
- 1:47the of maintaining the heat in your in your home in the winter the cool
- 1:51in the summer was just simply insulation. And it's been it's been probably ten
- 1:55years since you and I first talked about air ceiling. And it's something that
- 2:00that at first I thought, wait, what is he talking about air ceiling?
- 2:04And then you've talked to me over the years about and I thought,
- 2:07this is this is something that more people need to understand. Let's talk about
- 2:12the importance of actually not just insulation, which is important and we'll get to
- 2:16that part in just a moment, but the importance of actually physically preventing cold
- 2:23air from getting into your house. Yeah, you know, before I talk
- 2:29about that, you just brought that up about how long we've been doing this
- 2:32and how much does it's worth. If you ever get sick of working on
- 2:37the radio, Yeah, you should probably come sell oh Man, because I
- 2:43really think you'd be good at it. I'd have fun with it. There'd
- 2:46be no training. Well, thank you, and I've got to ask that,
- 2:50by the way, is with folks that not not ask for a job,
- 2:53I enjoy that perfect Let's talk about your real quick is We're going to
- 3:00get into this in just a moment. The airsling. But that just of
- 3:02course got another thing going for me, which is, obviously we've talked about
- 3:07this on the show. I've worked with you, you guys have done work
- 3:08on my home, and I've always talked about what great results we had and
- 3:14what a great experience it was. And one of the great things was when
- 3:19we worked with you guys at Larstome Services is really there was more education.
- 3:23There was more of a conversation. It wasn't like a a pressure kind of
- 3:28thing. It was like, hey, here's what's going on now. I
- 3:30knew with our house, I knew we needed a new roof, but there's
- 3:32so many different roof options and different different things to consider. Having a super
- 3:38knowledgeable person come to your home and talk you through this stuff. What a
- 3:42great peace of mind that is, and super knowledgeable folks that you have at
- 3:46Larstome Services when it comes to explaining and understanding why this is, you know,
- 3:52why this is needed, and really what the benefits as a homeowner ultimately
- 3:57will be. And years and years later, I can say absolutely they were
- 4:00one hundred percent. Everything I was told is exactly what we experienced. That's
- 4:04a big deal, isn't it It is. It's a really big deal.
- 4:08You know. Obviously when when one of our reps comes out to give a
- 4:11free estimate, obviously we want the work, you know, we want you
- 4:14to buy from us, but we also want to educate you on exactly what
- 4:18you have going on in your home, what needs to be fixed, how
- 4:23we're going to fix it, and always exactly what it's going to cost to
- 4:26fix it. We don't want any surprises, you know, I can honestly
- 4:30say that we're we're typically not the cheapest person. Actually we're never ever ever
- 4:34the cheapest person. But our price is going to include everything. There's not
- 4:40going to be surprises. And I don't know how many times I hear from
- 4:44homeowners that, you know, they were ready to go with somebody else,
- 4:47but they actually didn't really have any idea of what they were going to be
- 4:50doing. So, like when it comes to insulation work, insulation is a
- 4:56is a very broad term. Right. When people think they want to save
- 4:59money on it energy bills, they want to make their home warmer in the
- 5:02winter or cooler in the summer, they think, I need more insulation,
- 5:05and it's true. But what I do know about home science is, especially
- 5:11when it comes to the attic, insulation can be more important in the summer
- 5:15than in the winter, Especially if you've got a one story home and you
- 5:20know you've got improper insulation and your ceiling in your bedroom turns into a radiant
- 5:27oven and it's it's hot. I mean, I've seen them where those attic
- 5:30ceilings were ninety degrees. You're trying to cool the room to seventy and it's
- 5:34constantly a vicious cycle. Same goes for second story bedrooms where it's actually going
- 5:39to be can actually be a little warmer. But the winter air ceiling is
- 5:45really, really, really important. We know that heat rises, and we're
- 5:48constantly paying for that furnace to turn on, heat up the air, blow
- 5:51it into the home, just for that heat to rise. Fine penetrations in
- 5:56the ceiling, find penetrations in the where the wall, it's the ceiling,
- 6:00you know, plumbing penetrations and just go up and through it. Now,
- 6:04insulation will slow it down, but it's going to find a way out unless
- 6:09we air seal properly. So a couple different ways to do air ceiling.
- 6:15Now for our company, we've really just started something new this year just just
- 6:20because we know the importance of it is. You know, there are some
- 6:24companies they'll come out, they'll they'll brush your insulation aside and the air seal
- 6:29the best they can. But if you can imagine trying to find all the
- 6:32penetrations and all the top plates. When I say a top plate, that
- 6:36means like we're a wall meets the ceiling in the attic. It's not a
- 6:41continuous piece of sheet rock. There's gaps and they need to be sealed up
- 6:45top. So trying to find all that stuff with insulation in the attic is
- 6:49near impossible, and I can say it it is impossible to do a perfect
- 6:54job. So what we do require is we we have to remove your existing
- 6:59insulation. You know, I'd be like trying to do a roof without taking
- 7:00the shingles off. You can't do the flashings, you can't do the important
- 7:03stuff with leaving the old shingles on. There's companies that will do it.
- 7:09But it's going to leak. I mean it's it's one hundred percent guarantee at
- 7:12some point it's going to leak because of that. So we want to start
- 7:15with a clean attic floor so we can see everything. That way, we
- 7:20know we're going to get it done properly, because if it's not done properly,
- 7:24now it takes stack effect that was being spread across a whole attic or
- 7:30a whole ceiling, and if you miss some it's going to narrow it down
- 7:33to certain areas, which can cause condensation, which can cause mold. I
- 7:40know this because I've seen it. I've seen it too many times, honestly,
- 7:43I've seen it on jobs we've done, Sean. I mean, sometimes
- 7:46a homeowner doesn't want to pay for the removal. We say, okay,
- 7:47well we're going to do it the best that we can. But if you
- 7:50can imagine like moving around popcorn, seventeen inches of popcorn, move it aside
- 7:57to try to air seal. Now you make a movement, it falls back
- 8:00down on where you're trying to work, and it's a constant, vicious cycle.
- 8:03So we want to start with a clean surface so we can see everything,
- 8:07and then there's two ways to do it from there? Do you know
- 8:11those two ways to do it from there? Sean, I'm quizzing you right
- 8:13now. This is almost like an inner So there's two ways to once you
- 8:22clean it up and insulate up there, what do we two ways to air
- 8:24seal? Two ways? I'm gonna guess spray foam, a scotch tape,
- 8:31you know what? I thought you were going to get them both right.
- 8:35So the first way and really truly the best way to air seal an attic
- 8:41is with two part spray poae yes, and what we call a hybrid attic.
- 8:46So now instead of spot ceiling with a one part foam where we spot
- 8:50seal the penetrations and spot sealed the top plates, we put an inch of
- 8:58spray foam across the entire attic. This way, you know, without a
- 9:03shadow of it out, you are air ceiling and you're bringing a real good,
- 9:07nice r value to your attic. Before then you put seventeen inches of
- 9:13insulation on top of it. So that's called a hybrid addict because it's got
- 9:16spray foam and it's got cellulose. Now that that way, you'd love addicts
- 9:24I know you did chat you're picturing how beautiful. That is the best way
- 9:30to do it. That is also the most expensive way to do it.
- 9:33But we can also do a really great job of air ceiling. Now we're
- 9:37not going to add any our value before we put the insulation in, but
- 9:41a great way to our seal is just one part spray foam, where now
- 9:43we can see the entire attic floor it's clean of all insulation, and we
- 9:48can go around and hit all the penetrations. And that type of one part
- 9:50spray foone just it just comes out of cans, so it's a can spray
- 9:54foam. We go around, hit all the penetrations, seal up your chimney
- 9:58stack. How that needs to be still, that's a whole nother conversation of
- 10:01how that gets sealed up because that has to be fire rated. But so
- 10:05those are the two different ways to air seal, but they all for us,
- 10:09they all involve removing the the existing insulation because it's the only way we
- 10:15can ensure that it's done properly and we're not going to cause an issue or
- 10:18situation, because it can if it's not done right. See, I learned
- 10:22something new today Andrew, I didn't know that that was an option to do
- 10:26this. Yeah, we're gonna need to talk after the shame on me the
- 10:31same on me for not talking about that is absolutely amazing. And we talk
- 10:35about too when it comes to when it comes to taking care of your home,
- 10:39whether it's with proper insulation, proper sealing, all that and very very
- 10:45important stuff. You know, there are certain things like when I go to
- 10:48the grocery store, I'll buy the multi meal giant bags of knockoff cereal.
- 10:54That's a fine place to save a buck or two. Personally, when it
- 10:58comes to your home, not a good place to be saving a buck or
- 11:01two. And as we've learned over the years, it may look upfront like
- 11:05you're saving a buck or two going with a lesser, lesser company, going
- 11:07with with lesser professionals. Down the long run, it's going to cost you
- 11:11more, it's going to be more of an inconvenience, it's just going to
- 11:15be a mess. That's why I think that you talk about what is the
- 11:18cost to do some of these things people are You've got to understand what you're
- 11:22paying for, comparing apples to abbles, Understanding the warranty understanding the expertise,
- 11:26understanding the products, and that's a great thing. And working with Larsenome Services
- 11:28and the team, they will help you understand all of that and you will
- 11:33see what an amazing value it is. And again you talk about beautiful addicts,
- 11:37Yes, weird people like us love seeing beautiful attics. I love and
- 11:41I will say this, yes, what is what is the cost of doing
- 11:43it properly? And what is the cost of doing it? Because it's happened
- 11:50more times than I can count where we didn't get a job because someone else
- 11:54was going to do insulation for two thousand dollars and we were eight thousand dollars.
- 11:56They went with somebody else, and the next year we came back,
- 12:00we sucked all of that insulation out that they had just paid two thousand dollars
- 12:03for because what they paid for did absolutely nothing to fix their problem. So
- 12:09that's why when we come over to give an estimate, we're also going to
- 12:11educate on exactly what we're doing, why we're doing it, what the problem
- 12:16is is going to fix. And then if you choose to not go with
- 12:20us, that's fine, but at least you know what needs to be done
- 12:24and the proper way to do it. So we take a lot of pride
- 12:26in that today is today. Now is the time. Pick up the phone
- 12:28call lur Snome Services, have them out for a free estimate, take a
