- 0:25Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:31Tonight's message I've entitled. Stir up the gift of God, which.
- 0:37Is in you, and I believe that's the main point of chapter 1.
- 0:42Especially and so as we take a look at the first chapter.
- 0:49I want to. Take this chapter.
- 0:51And I want to split it into. Three parts.
- 0:54The first part. Is verses one through 7.
- 0:57And that's called stir up the gift of God.
- 1:01Which is in you the second. Part is verses 8 to through 12.
- 1:08And I call that section share with me in the sufferings for
- 1:12the. Gospel and the Third.
- 1:15Section is verses 13 to 18 and I call that speak and hold.
- 1:20Fast the. Sound words of the.
- 1:22Gospel. This is Paul's last letter.
- 1:28These are his last. Official words.
- 1:31We don't know if he wrote another one, but this is the one
- 1:35that we have. Paul is in the Mamertine prison
- 1:39in the in the lowest part of the Mamertine prison there in the
- 1:42city of Rome. He is there because he is
- 1:49considered. A criminal.
- 1:51Worthy of the death. Penalty.
- 1:55Why? Because he proclaimed.
- 1:57Jesus. As Lord and not.
- 2:00Caesar is Lord, the gospel that he preached.
- 2:05Got him in such trouble, now he is going to be losing.
- 2:11His life. As a Roman citizen.
- 2:13He was taken outside the city of.
- 2:16Rome and beheaded because Roman citizens were never.
- 2:20Crucified but. He knew that was ahead of him,
- 2:27and so when you read through Second Timothy, you don't hear
- 2:32him moaning or how unfair or how unjust.
- 2:35It is. He knows.
- 2:37That he is there because of the gospel.
- 2:40And God's in charge, somehow. I mean the very first.
- 2:45Words he says after. The greeting in verse 3 is I
- 2:48thank. God.
- 2:51And I tell you what, When we're in the midst of the unjust,
- 2:54unfair deep. Trial, I thank God, is.
- 2:58Often not the first 3 words that come out.
- 3:02But it was Paul's very. First thing he said.
- 3:07This. Letter was written around 67 or
- 3:0968 AD and that's about. 3 Two or three.
- 3:13Years before Jerusalem fell. And so he's there.
- 3:18And it's so important to think. About this because Paul is
- 3:22focused. He knows why he's in there.
- 3:26He knows what God wants to do. With it and he.
- 3:29Wants to be used even though he's stuck, and isn't that a
- 3:35great? Isn't that a great thought?
- 3:36God can use us. Even when we're stuck, some of
- 3:41you might be stuck in a job, God still wants to use you.
- 3:46Some of you are in a bad relationship.
- 3:50God still wants to use you. Some of you.
- 3:54Because of health. Situations.
- 3:56You're stuck in your body. You can't get out of it.
- 4:01God still wants to. Use.
- 4:04You and so tonight. As we go through this, there is
- 4:08just such a. Strong exhortation.
- 4:10Especially. Down there in verse 6 and 7:00
- 4:14and 8:00 and that is the exhortation where?
- 4:18Paul says to. Timothy, during these really
- 4:22crazy, nervous, risky times, stir.
- 4:26Up the gift of God, which? Is in you which is given to.
- 4:31You by the. Laying on of my hands, I was
- 4:33there. For God has not.
- 4:36Given us the. Spirit of fear, but of.
- 4:39Power and of love, and of a disciplined mind.
- 4:43So don't be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me
- 4:47as. Prisoner but suffer along.
- 4:50With me in this, so we're going. To talk about that tonight,
- 4:55because. We're living in a.
- 4:56Society where there's. A lot of things that are unfair
- 4:59in. Just just.
- 5:01Wrong. And and some of those very
- 5:04things can just get you going in the wrong direction.
- 5:10So here is this special. Letter One of my favorite
- 5:13letters in the Bible. And so let's start with the
- 5:18word. Of prayer and then we'll launch
- 5:19into this and I think that what we're looking for is the.
- 5:23Lord to stir. All of our hearts, no matter.
- 5:26If if you're just. Brand new believer or you've
- 5:30been a. Believer for years.
- 5:32God wants to do something in your life.
- 5:36For His glory. No matter what's happened in the
- 5:39past, he wants to start now, tonight.
- 5:44But we. Have to let him.
- 5:46We have to give him the key. To the door of our heart.
- 5:49So that we'll let him do his work.
- 5:51Amen. Let's pray, Father God.
- 5:55We thank you. For your word.
- 5:57And we're asking in the name of. Jesus that you would speak to us
- 6:02through this chapter. You know what's going on in our
- 6:07life. You know what we've been
- 6:09through. You know our reasonings.
- 6:15Maybe you know our anger. But you also know what you want
- 6:20to. Do you also?
- 6:22Know what you can do and you're patient to do it.
- 6:27So tonight. Lord, as we consider this
- 6:30scripture, speak to our hearts. In Jesus name, Amen, We'll
- 6:38follow along. I'm going to read the first 7
- 6:40verses. You kind of catch a a feel.
- 6:42For it here, Paul. An apostle of Jesus Christ by
- 6:48the will of God. According to the promise.
- 6:51Of life. Which is in Christ.
- 6:53Jesus to Timothy, a beloved son. Grace, mercy and peace from God
- 7:01the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
- 7:05I thank God whom I. Serve with a pure.
- 7:08Conscience as my forefathers. Did as without.
- 7:13Ceasing, I remember you in my prayers night and day, greatly
- 7:18desiring to see you being mindful.
- 7:21Of your tears. That I may be.
- 7:24Filled with joy when I call to. Remembrance the genuine faith
- 7:29that is in. You which dwelled?
- 7:311st in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am
- 7:37persuaded is in you also, therefore I remind.
- 7:43You to stir up the gift of God. Which is in you through the
- 7:49laying on of my hands. For God has.
- 7:53Not given us a. Spirit of fear, but of power and
- 7:57of love. And of a sound mind in verses 1
- 8:03and 2. Here we have Paul the Apostle
- 8:07incarcerated. He's not going anywhere.
- 8:10He's chained to a Roman soldier. It's a dark.
- 8:14Dank place, smelly, stinky and he's stuck but notice in verse 1
- 8:22he. Calls himself an apostle.
- 8:25But he's not going anywhere. An apostle was once sent forth
- 8:28as an ambassador. How can he fulfill his ministry
- 8:33as an apostle when he's stuck? He's doing it right now.
- 8:39God has different ways that he wants to use us, and sometimes
- 8:43we think because I can't do this, then I can't fulfill my
- 8:46calling. And that's just not true if God
- 8:50wants to use. You where you are.
- 8:52He wants to open up doors in different ways than you've used.
- 8:56Before. I mean just recently.
- 8:59Pastor. Ed asked me to host Calvary Live
- 9:02and. And Calvary Live is a a live.
- 9:05Call in program Monday. To Friday 4. 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
- 9:11And he asked me to be one of the hosts.
- 9:13Well, yet you can't have dead air time when somebody asks a
- 9:17question, you can't just space out.
- 9:19I mean, you can't, you can't have that kind of thing going
- 9:22on. But I'm I'm not a guy that I
- 9:25like to process. When someone asks me a question,
- 9:28I like to like, think about it. But you can't do that.
- 9:31And so I've got to. I've got to.
- 9:33Think and talk at the same time. Now, you might think that's
- 9:37easy. For you.
- 9:39It's easy for my wife, but it's not easy for me and and so I've
- 9:44got to work at this and so. This is a stretch.
- 9:47For me, and I just pray that I don't say something to get
- 9:52arrested or get in or get in trouble.
- 9:54Or get sued so. So on.
- 9:57Fridays, Thursdays and Fridays. I'm hosting Calvary.
- 10:00Live, but it's a. It's a whole new area for me
- 10:03outside of my comfort zone. But God is.
- 10:05Working. So if you.
- 10:08Call in. Just don't, don't be giving me
- 10:10weird questions, OK? That's just to say so.
- 10:15Paul's an apostle. He this is his normal greeting
- 10:18here back in these days. You started with who you?
- 10:22Were writing not at the end of your letter.
- 10:24You always started with. Putting you who you were.
- 10:27And then Paul talked about. His.
- 10:29His. Calling and then.
- 10:31Look at it at the phrase. According to the promise.
- 10:33Of life. He's not in a.
- 10:36Place of life. Physically, it's a place of
- 10:40death. But you know.
- 10:44He had his eyes. Fixed on the life.
- 10:47The life. That's ahead of me.
- 10:48The life I can experience right now, I'm drawing from a
- 10:51different well. Than what this?
- 10:54World can offer me and he. Says to Timothy A.
- 10:59Beloved son Timothy, where there was nobody like minded.
- 11:05With Paul as was. Timothy as.
- 11:07Paul. Writes in Philippians 220.
- 11:11Timothy likely came to. Faith through the direct.
- 11:14Ministry of Paul on Paul's first missionary journey and then
- 11:18since the second missionary journey.
- 11:21Timothy. Timothy.
- 11:25First of all had to get circumcised because.
- 11:27Paul says we need. You to actually do this because.
- 11:31Of the people that know you here and your dad is a Greek, your
- 11:35mom is a Jew and. So we need to like.
- 11:38Take care of that. So that was his.
- 11:40Initiation into Paul's ministry, you might say.
- 11:44A little rough. But it was good.
- 11:46It was important. And so he travelled over the
- 11:49next 15 years alongside the Apostle Paul. 15 years having a
- 11:56mentor. Like Paul the Apostle.
- 12:01But the intensity of the times, I mean, you could just feel it.
- 12:05You could just scrape. It off the walls, the Roman
- 12:08Empire, this hatred was growing growing, growing against the
- 12:13Christians and it was becoming more and more dangerous and you
- 12:18know, they had the Colosseum as well where people were being,
- 12:22you know, either given to. Gladiators or.
- 12:25Or given to wild animals. And so it was a.
- 12:28It was a. Terrifying time to serve the
- 12:30Lord. And here is Timothy, now in
- 12:34charge of the house churches in the city of Ephesus, a Roman
- 12:38capital, a colony, and. So they just arrested?
- 12:44Paul and some think Alexander the coppersmith that the one
- 12:50that. Really spoke against.
- 12:51Him and got him arrested on this last time.
- 12:56Now Timothy is Paul's travelling companion.
- 12:59Paul's special. Companion.
- 13:01And now it's like now the bull's eye is on me and in the natural
- 13:08we can feel timid, we can feel a bit of cowardice, we can feel a
- 13:14bit of hiding or running. So Paul addresses that in the
- 13:19very first chapter to Timothy. And we see here that Paul
- 13:25includes grace, mercy and peace, normally his.
- 13:28Greeting to the churches earlier was.
- 13:31Grace and peace, but now he includes mercy because God.
- 13:37Has really opened. His heart in a fresh way of how
- 13:40merciful he has been over the years to him personally and to
- 13:45Timothy. So he he writes that he.
- 13:49Includes that undeserved kindness, compassion, and favor
- 13:54in the face of our unworthiness. How we need the special mercy
- 13:59of. God.
- 14:00In living out our faith in this present evil generation well in.
- 14:06Verses 3 through 5 Here is where Paul says I thank God.
- 14:13I serve him. I thank him.
- 14:16For all he's done. And notice this notice.
- 14:20That he says I. Thank God with with.
- 14:23I I serve with a pure. Conscience.
- 14:28It's not a a conscience that's been.
- 14:30Dulled by alcohol or drugs. It's a conscience that's.
- 14:35Pure. Where even doesn't mean he was.
- 14:40Perfect it. Means he was cleansed.
- 14:44How much more shall the blood of Christ cleanse your conscience
- 14:48from dead? Works.
- 14:50When you fall into sin during the week, whether it's anger.
- 14:53Or whether it is. Watching things you shouldn't.
- 14:56Watch or whatever. The sin is you.
- 14:59You need to go to the Lord by the end of the day and get a
- 15:02royal flush. You need to get that cleansed
- 15:06out of your heart and mind God wants to do.
- 15:08That. He's waiting to.
- 15:10Do it, but there's a part you play.
- 15:13You own it. You say God.
- 15:16What was I thinking that was wrong?
- 15:19So please flush that out of my. Life cleanse me by the Holy
- 15:24Spirit, the living. Water of God a.
- 15:27Pure conscience. Is of great value.
- 15:30Living in this evil. World and he says as.
- 15:36Without ceasing, I remember you in my prayers, night and day.
- 15:40Without. Ceasing the Greek word.
- 15:43It refers to a. Nagging cough.
- 15:47And so some of. You are you have nagging coughs
- 15:49right now. Well, that's just a a word to
- 15:51remind you. That's what ceasing prayer is
- 15:54like. It just kind of keeps coming up.
- 15:56You're trying to stop it and just keeps coming up.
- 15:59It doesn't mean. All you did is.
- 16:00Pray and what you. Hardly ever breathe.
- 16:03You just prayed, you know? No, it's a nagging.
- 16:05Cough it it. Comes up like I.
- 16:07Can hear that cough out there? I heard that, so, he says.
- 16:13You know, I, I. Constantly pray for.
- 16:15You, I mean, what's he going to? Do he stuck?
- 16:17To a Roman guard, he's not doing.
- 16:19He's not going anywhere. I pray for you greatly.
- 16:23Desiring to see you. Being mindful.
- 16:26Of your tears. What do you mean?
- 16:29Was this a reference to Timothy Happened to be?
- 16:32There and seeing. Paul arrested and an.
- 16:35Emotional reaction? We don't know, but it's stuck in
- 16:39Paul's mind. You know, there are some things
- 16:41you cannot Unsee. And Paul looking at Timothy as
- 16:48he maybe he's being. LED away those tears.
- 16:52Expression of love. Grief, terror, he says.
- 16:59I called to remember. It's verse 5 the.
- 17:02Genuine faith that's in you. Genuine.
- 17:04It's not hypocritical. It's the real deal.
- 17:09The genuine faith, this is important.
- 17:12Because it leads us to verse 6. Yes, Timothy.
- 17:16'S grandmother and Timothy's mother played a part in
- 17:19influencing Timothy. But I think the verse 6 says
- 17:25therefore and I think. Here's just something you can
- 17:29do. You can go through Second
- 17:30Timothy Go. Through the whole.
- 17:31Letter and just. Highlight all the words
- 17:34therefore, because therefore are.
- 17:37Pins in the wall that things hang on, and so when.
- 17:41You see therefore. Then you look ahead and say.
- 17:45OK, there's a principle he just stated.
- 17:48And now this new thing. Is hooked to that.
- 17:52And so those. Therefore are super.
- 17:53Important and how Paul writes. Therefore, I remind you to.
- 17:59Stir up the gift of God. Which is in you?
- 18:04This is in verse six and seven stirring up.
- 18:09The gift of God. Timothy, I know you're a
- 18:13believer. I know you have genuine faith.
- 18:15I know you have. The Holy Spirit.
- 18:17Living in you, but I'm reminding you based on these days we're
- 18:24living in. Stir up the gift of God, which
- 18:27is. In you through the laying on of
- 18:29my hands and the implication here.
- 18:34Is that this? Is something that happened.
- 18:36After he. Became a believer and Paul was
- 18:41intimately a. Part of that he.
- 18:43Personally laid hands on Timothy that God might give him that
- 18:49gift that he needed to carry out his ministry.
- 18:57One thing I need to mention here if you're a believer in the
- 19:03Lord. Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit.
- 19:07Comes and makes his home in your heart.
- 19:10If you haven't made a profession of faith in the Lord.
- 19:13Jesus, yet the Holy Spirit does. Not live in your.
- 19:16Heart he is. With you to convict.
- 19:20You of sin, righteousness. Righteousness and judgment, but
- 19:24he hasn't come and made his home within you yet.
- 19:28Yes, you've got your. Human spirit, but you do not
- 19:30have the Holy Spirit abiding in you until you.
- 19:34Put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ.
- 19:37When you humble yourself, and you repent, and you.
- 19:40Profess Jesus as. Lord, and you invite him to come
- 19:44and make his home in your. Life, the Holy Spirit.
- 19:46Moves in and doesn't leave. He doesn't timeshare.
- 19:51You with the devil? He's not an Airbnb, OK?
- 19:55It's not. That's not.
- 19:56What it is? He comes and makes his home, in
- 19:59you he indwells. You but Jesus said there is a.
- 20:06Power from on high that God wants.
- 20:10To give you for. Boldness.
- 20:11For service, the fruit of the Holy Spirit has to do with
- 20:17character. Lovejoy, peace, long-suffering,
- 20:22gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness,
- 20:25self-control, character, things that are developed from the
- 20:29inside by the holy. Spirit, but the gifts of the.
- 20:34Spirit and the Baptism with the Holy.
- 20:36Spirit has to do with power. For service and brings boldness
- 20:42and you'll see in the context. That he talks about this because
- 20:48the. Days were so radical.
- 20:51That it was easy for Timothy to kind of pull back.
- 20:56That's that's interesting. All through Second Timothy,
- 21:00you're going to find 27 commands.
- 21:03At least that's what I find 27 commands from Paul to Timothy.
- 21:08And here in chapter 1, it's five.
- 21:10And this is the first command stir.
- 21:13Up the gift of God. Which is in you through the
- 21:17laying out of hands. 5 commands to stir.
- 21:22Up here is the Greek word that has to do with.
- 21:26Keep constantly blazing the fire.
- 21:30Fan the fire into a flame. Tend a dying.
- 21:33Fire There was a. Spiritual conscious activity
- 21:39involved here on Timothy. 'S part God gives you the Holy
- 21:44Spirit. To indwell you and he wants to
- 21:48empower you by his power coming upon you from on.
- 21:52High, but you've got to stir it up just.
- 21:58Because it happened once doesn't mean it's.
- 22:00Good for the rest of your life, Ephesians chapter 5 says.
- 22:05Be being. Filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 22:08Keeping to to go to him, saying God use me again, fill me again
- 22:14as a vessel. Notice the gift of God.
- 22:23Was already within him, not that Timothy had to bring it down
- 22:27from heaven. And you know I.
- 22:30Got I got saved. In in a more Pentecostal church
- 22:33and I know what this. Is all about but.
- 22:36It's it's not I'm I'm making. God obligated?
- 22:42No, because you see, prayer isn't to.
- 22:47Overcome God's reluctance. Prayer is to.
- 22:51Join with God's willingness and you've got to believe that and
- 22:58when you pray. You need to ask.
- 22:59Yourself. Am I trying to convince God or
- 23:04and or do I? Believe he already.
- 23:06Wants to work and prayer now is joining with His willingness,
- 23:13not trying to overcome. His reluctance because God.
- 23:17Is not reluctant. He wants to help.
- 23:20You he wants to bless. You.
- 23:21He wants to. Use you, but you got to stir up
- 23:26the gift of God every. One of us.
- 23:28Has at least. One gift from the Holy.
- 23:31Spirit, we see that. In First Corinthians.
- 23:34Chapter 12. When I was.
- 23:39Looking through this here. In verse 7 for God has not
- 23:44given. Us a spirit of fear, but of.
- 23:51Power and of love and of a sound mind.
- 23:55So when he says given, it's implying it's a gift.
- 23:59It's not something earned, it's a.
- 24:01Gift, the gift of the of the Holy Spirit.
- 24:05In Acts chapter 4, verses 29 to 31.
- 24:09Here's what. We read there's persecution
- 24:13that's falling upon the church from the Jewish authorities in
- 24:16Jerusalem, The. Church gets.
- 24:18Together, and here's their prayer.
- 24:22Now, Lord, look on their threats and grant to your servants that
- 24:28with all boldness they may speak.
- 24:32Your word by. Stretching out your hand to heal
- 24:35and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of your
- 24:38holy servant Jesus, and when they.
- 24:41Had prayed the place where they were assembled together was.
- 24:45Shaken. And they were.
- 24:47All filled with the holy. Spirit and they spoke.
- 24:51The word of God. With boldness.
- 24:56Some people say, well, what's the?
- 24:57Proof. What's the sign that I've been
- 24:59baptized? With the holy.
- 25:01Spirit right here. Boldness.
- 25:05Yes, they spoke in tongues in Acts.
- 25:07Chapter 2. But when you're reading through
- 25:10Corinthians, you find out that it's not supposed to be the main
- 25:14point. And plus.
- 25:16As you're looking the book of Acts looking.
- 25:18Through it there are. Times where tongues aren't even
- 25:21mentioned when they're baptized. With the Holy Spirit.
- 25:25But boldness is right here. When they prayed, the place was
- 25:30shaken. Then they were filled.
- 25:31With the holy. Spirit and the proof.
- 25:33Is there is a new? Power in their life they didn't
- 25:37have before. They spoke the word.
- 25:40Of God in boldness rather than pulling back in fear so Paul
- 25:47says in verse 7 for God has not given us a.
- 25:50Spirit of fear. You know that word in the Greek
- 25:53is not the normal word for. Fear Phobos phobia the.
- 25:59Word for fear is only used here one time in the Greek in the New
- 26:03Testament, and it means it means timidity and cowardice.
- 26:11God has not given us a. Spirit of cowardice to.
- 26:14Pull away and run when things. Get difficult and that.
- 26:19Comes. By the Holy Spirit the.
- 26:23Holy Spirit will not tell you to be.
- 26:25A coward, the holy. Spirit will embolden you to
- 26:29stand strong in your. Faith, because that's what he
- 26:34says. In the second part of verse 7,
- 26:36God has given. Us a spirit.
- 26:40Of power, and that's the word dunamis, power from on high.
- 26:45And it doesn't mean you know. Power like you see.
- 26:49In some displays on Christian evangelistic TV, this is
- 26:56boldness like the book of. Acts we just read.
- 26:59Dunamis a backbone. Spiritually, but he's also.
- 27:05Given us love. Agape love it's.
- 27:09Interesting that he includes. This because love without power
- 27:15can be weak, but power without. Love can be oppressive, but not
- 27:21only those. Two but he says.
- 27:23A sound mind. He's not talking that.
- 27:27You're crazy, but the. Word in the Greek means focused,
- 27:32disciplined. Where you're.
- 27:34Focused you. You know where you're going, you
- 27:37know what you're walking into, and you're confident.
- 27:41But your heart is filled with love.
- 27:43At the same time. Here is this threefold.
- 27:47Cord necessary to stir. Up the gift of God.
- 27:51Which is in you. How do you do that?
- 27:55Well, I I. Think the threefold.
- 27:57Cord is this. First of all, it's your prayer
- 28:00life to stir up the gift of. God to, you know, poke the
- 28:05campfire and get the flame back. It's through prayer talking.
- 28:09To the Lord, being honest with the Lord, you know, asking him
- 28:15to to do work that you never thought could ever happen in
- 28:18your life. Prayer number 2 has to do.
- 28:24With. Reading the word and because
- 28:27when you see what Paul is going to say here.
- 28:30In this second section. It's kind of helping Timothy.
- 28:35Stir up the gift. Because remembering.
- 28:39What the Lord Jesus has done. For you.
- 28:42And all the privileges he has brought to you, that's.
- 28:46Part of stirring up the gift and the. 3rd has to do.
- 28:51With guarding your mind. Your thought life.
- 28:56Saying, you know what? I I don't want my mind to
- 28:59wander. Off into those areas.
- 29:01But I want. To be focused.
- 29:03On what he has done for me. It's like Paul.
- 29:06Says in verse three, I thank God in the middle of the Mamertine
- 29:11prison. How can you do?
- 29:12That knowing that he's going to die in a few months, if not a
- 29:18few. Weeks.
- 29:21And according to Christian tradition.
- 29:23It was believed that Paul counted A privilege to be able
- 29:29to die outside the city like his Lord did.
- 29:33Focused. How do you stir up the gift of
- 29:36God? God has.
- 29:41Given. Us all that's needed.
- 29:45To stir up the flame. We just have to.
- 29:50Ask him, Jesus said, if any of you.
- 29:55That's a father. Knows how to give.
- 29:56Good gifts to your. Children, how much more will the
- 29:59Father in heaven? Give the Holy Spirit to those
- 30:01who ask. Him, and just as well we're on
- 30:05the topic. Here I just.
- 30:07Want to ask you. Have you had a?
- 30:12Can you think of a time where hands were laid upon you for the
- 30:16baptism? With the Holy Spirit.
- 30:19Now I know when you're looking through the book.
- 30:20Of acts. Hands weren't laid upon people
- 30:24every single time of. Course, there's Acts chapter 2.
- 30:28And then there was Cornelius there in Acts chapter 10.
- 30:34But then you see upon believers in Acts chapter.
- 30:37Eight that Peter. And John came up to Samaria.
- 30:41They laid hands upon them, and they were.
- 30:43Baptized with the Holy Spirit, they were believers.
- 30:46And then in Acts chapter 19. Hands, Paul.
- 30:49Laid hands upon these believers, and they were.
- 30:52Filled with the Holy. Spirit and at that time they.
- 30:55Spoke with other languages. And so part of stirring up.
- 31:02The gift of God is have. I have I been baptized with the
- 31:08Holy Spirit? Yes, I'm a believer, but.
- 31:11Have I experienced that? Power from on high to grant to
- 31:14me the boldness, and at the end of the service I I would like to
- 31:20invite. You if if you.
- 31:21Haven't you're not sure? Then I invite you to come up and
- 31:25have one of the. Pastors lay hands.
- 31:26On you and pray for you. To receive the baptism.
- 31:29With the Holy Spirit because you need the power from on high.
- 31:33To deal with the society we're. Living in right now.
- 31:38Well, let's keep on going. Let's look at the second
- 31:42section. Here verses 8 through 12.
- 31:46Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor
- 31:51of me his prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings.
- 31:57For the gospel. According to the power, the
- 32:00dunamis of God, who has saved us and.
- 32:05Called us with a. Holy calling not according.
- 32:09To our works but. According to his own purpose and
- 32:12grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,
- 32:18but has now been revealed by the.
- 32:20Appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death.
- 32:25And brought life and immortality to light.
- 32:28Through the gospel to which I was.
- 32:31Appointed A preacher an. Apostle and a.
- 32:34Teacher of the Gentiles for this reason.
- 32:37I also suffer these. Things nevertheless I am not
- 32:43ashamed, for I know whom. I have believed.
- 32:48And AM. Persuaded that he is able to
- 32:52keep what I've. Committed to him until that day.
- 32:58Do not be ashamed. That's the second command.
- 33:04The third command. Share with me in the sufferings.
- 33:07That's one word in the Greek. It's a compound word.
- 33:10Share with me in in the evil sufferings.
- 33:14Timothy, don't run. We are in this.
- 33:17Together so purposely share. With me in this and you know
- 33:28when you. Choose to live godly in Christ
- 33:30Jesus, You will suffer. Persecution if you're working in
- 33:36a warehouse situation and the talk during break is so.
- 33:43Ungodly. There are times you have to
- 33:47remove yourself and they say oh. There goes Holy Joe.
- 33:53You know, you know, and they make fun of you and all that.
- 33:55But let me tell you something. When you hold to your testimony
- 34:01when things go wonky in their life.
- 34:03You're probably the first. First person, they're going to
- 34:05come. To it's.
- 34:09Not that you call yourself a Christian.
- 34:12That brings persecution necessarily.
- 34:15Second Timothy, 312. Says all who desire to live.
- 34:19Godly in Christ Jesus. Shall suffer persecution so.
- 34:26When you. Choose to obey the word.
- 34:30And obey your Lord and to walk with integrity according to.
- 34:34The to the fear of God that's. When trouble comes.
- 34:40And the temptation is. Well, I I don't want to.
- 34:42Be a Holy Joe. And for those of you whose name
- 34:45is Joe, you know that's just a statement.
- 34:47Don't take it personal. Or maybe you should.
- 34:50I don't know. OK, the Holy Spirit is always.
- 34:55Faithful to point us to Jesus and all that.
- 34:58He's done so when the spirits. Working in my life, Jesus is the
- 35:04reason. He's the focus.
- 35:07How does he see it? For this reason, verse. 12 I
- 35:16also. Suffer these things
- 35:18nevertheless, I am not ashamed, even though I'm.
- 35:21Suffered I'm I'm. Suffering these things and they
- 35:24have accused me of things that aren't true.
- 35:27I'm not going to allow shame to rule my life.
- 35:30Because that's Jesus is. Not shaming me.
- 35:34Maybe other people will. Shame you, but Jesus is not
- 35:37shaming you. Why?
- 35:40For I know whom I have believed. He didn't say I know.
- 35:46What I have believed. He's not looking to doctrine,
- 35:50he's looking to the person I know whom.
- 35:54I have believed. And AM.
- 35:55Persuaded he's able to keep what I have.
- 35:58Committed to him until that day. I know it it's.
- 36:03Solid. It's not questioned.
- 36:08Let's look at the. Last section verses. 13 to 18
- 36:11and here is an exhortation for Timothy.
- 36:14To keep. Focused in the midst of this
- 36:17nonsense world, he's living in hold.
- 36:21Fast the. Pattern of sound words which you
- 36:24have heard from me in faith and love, which are in Christ.
- 36:28Jesus, that good? Thing which was.
- 36:31Committed to you keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells.
- 36:34In US this you know that all those in Asia have turned away
- 36:40from me, among whom are for jealous and homogeneous.
- 36:45You've heard of homogeneous milk Homogenized.
- 36:48OK, the Lord grant mercy to the household.
- 36:52Of onusiferous. For he OFT refreshed.
- 36:54Me and was not ashamed of my chain, but when he arrived in
- 36:59Rome he sought me out very zealously and found me the Lord.
- 37:04Grant to him that he may find mercy from the Lord in that day,
- 37:11and you know very well how many ways he ministered to me at
- 37:14Ephesus. Some Bible commentators say that
- 37:19onissimus here actually in. His effort to really.
- 37:23Try to find Paul. Ended up getting busted.
- 37:25Himself. And and I don't know for for.
- 37:32Paul to say. The Lord grant him mercy to find
- 37:36mercy from the Lord in that day. It wasn't like he was unbeliever
- 37:40or something, that there's something serious going down
- 37:44with Onissimus because he was a minister there at Ephesus and
- 37:49Timothy knew him. But look at. 13 verse 13 hold.
- 37:56Fast the. Pattern of sound words which
- 37:59you've heard. From me, that's discipleship
- 38:05over. 15 years Timothy watched, listened to, interacted with.
- 38:12Paul. It was in him.
- 38:16Paul was his mentor. You might.
- 38:18Say he was impacted, hold fast the.
- 38:26Pattern of sound words, Timothy. You've heard them directly from
- 38:30me. This is a.
- 38:32In a passion to plea a command and that good thing which was.
- 38:37Committed to you probably the the responsibility of leadership
- 38:41over the house churches. There in Ephesus.
- 38:44You keep that by the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 38:47The enabling comes. From the Holy Spirit.
- 38:49Not from you, Tim. The Holy Spirit gives you that
- 38:53ability and actually. Going back to verse 8, share
- 38:58with me in the sufferings. For the gospel according to the
- 39:04power of God, the power of. God is going to help you
- 39:08accomplish this command. Share with me in my sufferings.
- 39:13It's more than empathy. It really is all in for someone
- 39:18who is going through it now think.
- 39:22About it as we. Come to the close.
- 39:24Here. What does finishing Well look
- 39:28like in your mind? Everybody gathered around you
- 39:32and all these people telling your accolades and all.
- 39:36How about the Apostle Paul? Everybody forsook him.
- 39:42Did he finish well? Sometimes finishing well means
- 39:46you finish alone because your family hasn't followed your
- 39:52testimony, your friends have forsaken you.
- 39:57You're coming to the end in an illness, a terminal illness, and
- 40:01you're by yourself. But.
- 40:03Jesus stands with you. You are not alone.
- 40:08Finishing well means finishing well in faithfulness, and it's.
- 40:15Important Paul the Apostle. Just think of it how greatly he
- 40:20was used. And everybody split on him and
- 40:25he's saying. Timothy, please.
- 40:26Come before winter, bring cloaks.
- 40:29Because you know it's. Freezing cold come before winter
- 40:33because I think the end is coming.
- 40:37Everybody's gone, even people that served with him gone.
- 40:42Well, it it. Sheds a whole new light on in my
- 40:47mind. What's it look like to finish?
- 40:49Well, it means. How does Jesus see it?
- 40:54Not how other people see it. How does Jesus see it?
- 41:00I want to finish well, I want my last.
- 41:04Words. To be I thank.
- 41:06God, let's pray. Father God, we thank you so much
- 41:13for these exhortations today. And we ask God that you.
- 41:19Would bring us. To the place of.
- 41:24Stirring up the flame, stirring up the fire.
- 41:31Lord help us not neglect the. Gift that you have.
- 41:34Given to us and we ask Lord. That if there are those.
- 41:39That come up here. After service to be.
- 41:42To have hands laid on them for the baptism.
- 41:44With the Holy Spirit Lord that you'd.
- 41:45Honor their request and you'd grant to them specially the
- 41:49boldness and the. Power to serve you.
- 41:52With effectiveness to your. Glory, Lord, we're so grateful
- 41:59for your gifts. We're so.
- 42:00Grateful for your kindness. And so, Lord, we leave these
- 42:06words with. You.
- 42:09We're asking you. Lord, to bear fruit to your
- 42:11glory. In Jesus name, Amen, We pray
