Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schreeger is a production of the
• 0:09
Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody? This is
• 0:24
Speaker 1: the Season with Peter Schrager. I'm Peter Schreger, joined here
• 0:29
Speaker 1: by my trusted producer, Aaron wang Kaufman. We are now
• 0:35
Speaker 1: less than ten days away from the NFL Draft, and
• 0:38
Speaker 1: I have not slept over the last twenty four hours
• 0:41
Speaker 1: because I had been working on it for weeks. But
• 0:43
Speaker 1: I take a lot of pride and I put out
• 0:45
Speaker 1: my first mock draft. And that sounds so trivial in
• 0:48
Speaker 1: the grand scheme of things, and you're just dropping into
• 0:51
Speaker 1: this podcast, like, who is this person who thinks that
• 0:54
Speaker 1: it's such a dramatic thing that he's putting out his
• 0:56
Speaker 1: first mock draft? The first of two. Let me explain
• 1:00
Speaker 1: the reason I take so much pride in it is that,
• 1:02
Speaker 1: year after year after year, I have a great humility.
• 1:07
Speaker 1: Usually I do not have great humility when it comes
• 1:09
Speaker 1: to this. I have the most accurate mock draft on
• 1:12
Speaker 1: the Internet. And that's because I don't do the mock
• 1:15
Speaker 1: draft in terms of who I would take or what
• 1:18
Speaker 1: I think a team should do. I do it with
• 1:20
Speaker 1: what I'm hearing from around the league, from GMS, from coaches,
• 1:23
Speaker 1: and in many cases from those teams specifically, if you
• 1:26
Speaker 1: watch Good Morning Football, listen to this podcast, you know
• 1:28
Speaker 1: I've got relationships around the league. I oftentimes will utilize
• 1:33
Speaker 1: those relationships and getting the best NFL news available, not
• 1:36
Speaker 1: necessarily transactional. This guy signed for this much money and
• 1:39
Speaker 1: breaking news here but more. Okay, Jalen Hurt signs a deal.
• 1:43
Speaker 1: Here's how it got done. Here's why I got done.
• 1:45
Speaker 1: Let me speak to my sources in Philadelphia and on
• 1:48
Speaker 1: the players side and try to come to that conclusion
• 1:51
Speaker 1: and get the best information possible. When it comes to
• 1:54
Speaker 1: the draft though, and I says, well, you're getting smoke screens,
• 1:57
Speaker 1: you're getting this. No one's telling me who they're taking
• 1:59
Speaker 1: up top. What I'm doing is I'm talking to all
• 2:01
Speaker 1: the teams I possibly can, and I'm trying to infer
• 2:05
Speaker 1: the most informed that I can out of that. I'm
• 2:08
Speaker 1: trying to make it work. I'm trying to get to
• 2:11
Speaker 1: a point where I feel comfortable when people around the
• 2:13
Speaker 1: league can look at it and say, ooh, that's interesting.
• 2:15
Speaker 1: He must have spoken to somebody. Let me get on
• 2:17
Speaker 1: the phone and let me see what he's got, or
• 2:18
Speaker 1: let me explain why this might not make sense. So
• 2:22
Speaker 1: my first mock draft came out and I worked on
• 2:24
Speaker 1: it over Saturday, Sunday, Monday, came out on Tuesday morning.
• 2:29
Speaker 1: Here's how it goes, and I'm going to go through
• 2:31
Speaker 1: it quickly and I'm going to have some comments throughout
• 2:34
Speaker 1: number one. The Carolina Panthers are taking Bryce Young number two.
• 2:37
Speaker 1: I have a trade and this is so unlikely, and
• 2:41
Speaker 1: yet I connected a couple dots here where if ever
• 2:44
Speaker 1: there was going to be an intradivisional trade, this would
• 2:45
Speaker 1: be the one. I have. The Houston Texans trading back
• 2:49
Speaker 1: with the Indianapolis Colts, their hated rival and a team
• 2:53
Speaker 1: in the division, and the Colts moving up to number
• 2:55
Speaker 1: two and doing so by trading one of their star players,
• 2:59
Speaker 1: DeForest Buckner, to the Houston Texans. They just restructured Buckner's contract.
• 3:05
Speaker 1: Buckner also played for Miko Ryans when they were in
• 3:07
Speaker 1: San Francisco. Again, so rare to have an intradivisional trade.
• 3:11
Speaker 1: But if the Colts were to offer the fourth overall
• 3:14
Speaker 1: pick into Forest Buckner for the second overall pick, could
• 3:18
Speaker 1: the Texans say no? And if you're listening at home,
• 3:21
Speaker 1: and you're saying, why would the Texans just take CJ. Straud,
• 3:24
Speaker 1: Just take CJ. Stroud at two, be done with it.
• 3:27
Speaker 1: They might. In fact, I would say, even though I
• 3:30
  Speaker 1: don't have a happening in this mock draft, there's a
• 3:32
Speaker 1: pretty good chance they do take a quarterback at two,
• 3:34
Speaker 1: despite all the words right now that they might be
• 3:35
Speaker 1: trading out or they might just be taking the best
• 3:37
Speaker 1: defensive player available. I will make this point there are
• 3:41
Speaker 1: personalities and humans involved when it comes to the draft,
• 3:45
Speaker 1: and oftentimes a team won't have a certain player on
• 3:48
Speaker 1: their board because of this guy had this off the
• 3:51
Speaker 1: field in fraction, or this guy doesn't fit in our
• 3:53
Speaker 1: scheme anything. There's no chance that Houston Texans don't have
• 3:56
Speaker 1: c J. Stroud high on their board. They absolutely do
• 3:59
Speaker 1: have c J. Stroud high on their board. They might
• 4:01
Speaker 1: take him second overall. I will note that CJ. Stroud's
• 4:04
Speaker 1: agent is the same agent as the Watson. Houston and
• 4:09
Speaker 1: Sean Watson ended in not such great ways, and it
• 4:13
Speaker 1: was a disgusting fallout of a guy holding out and
• 4:16
Speaker 1: he made all his money, and yet he demanded a
• 4:18
Speaker 1: trade and they let it. If Houston doesn't draft a
• 4:21
Speaker 1: quarterback second overall, and they move back and draft another quarterback,
• 4:24
  Speaker 1: and if it's not c J. Stroud, I'm not saying
• 4:26
Speaker 1: it's because of that. I would just say there are
• 4:28
Speaker 1: personalities involved, and I no one said to me they
• 4:32
Speaker 1: will not take him, or look at the agent. No,
• 4:35
Speaker 1: that's me. That's me coming there and just saying, I
• 4:37
Speaker 1: wonder if that plays a role in the selection of
• 4:39
Speaker 1: a franchise quarterback, if they go down that road with
• 4:42
Speaker 1: the same agent that represented their last franchise quarterback where
• 4:46
Speaker 1: it went terribly awry at the end. So I've got
• 4:49
Speaker 1: the Colts taking c J. Stroud at too. I have
• 4:51
Speaker 1: the Cardinals staying put, taking Will Anderson. I have the
• 4:54
Speaker 1: Texans then taking not a quarterback but Tyree Wilson out
• 4:57
Speaker 1: of Texas Tech. I'll get to their quarterback situation in
• 5:00
Speaker 1: just a bit. Five is the Seahawks, fascinating team, loaded everywhere.
• 5:07
Speaker 1: Just signed Geno Smith to a contract that's three years
• 5:11
Speaker 1: and truly he's the guy for next year for sure,
• 5:14
Speaker 1: one year, twenty seven million. Next year. I have the Seahawks,
• 5:17
Speaker 1: with Jalen Carter still on the board, taking Anthony Richardson
• 5:20
Speaker 1: the quarterback out of Florida. Gino Smith's thirty two. He
• 5:24
Speaker 1: had a great year. He's getting handsomely paid for it.
• 5:26
  Speaker 1: It's a great story. I mean truly, it's the comeback
• 5:29
Speaker 1: player of the year story you'd hope.
• 5:30
  Speaker 2: Four.
• 5:30
Speaker 1: After eight straight years of not being a starter and
• 5:34
Speaker 1: four straight years of signing one year contracts, he finally
• 5:38
Speaker 1: gets the deal with the Seahawks. He's going to be
• 5:40
Speaker 1: their quarterback next year. Anthony Richardson is the future, and
• 5:44
Speaker 1: I don't think the Seahawks plan on being in the
• 5:46
Speaker 1: top five anytime soon. I don't think the Seahawks plan
• 5:48
Speaker 1: on ever being in this rebuild mode where they got
• 5:51
Speaker 1: all this for the Russell Wilson trade anytime soon. Top
• 5:54
Speaker 1: five pick a quarterback's there with a quarterback who can
• 5:57
Speaker 1: not only teach him the ways, but doesn't make him
• 6:00
Speaker 1: feel forced he has to start year one. I like
• 6:03
Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson to the Seahawks at five. I went Jalen Carter.
• 6:07
Speaker 1: We'll get to Jalen Carter a bit. I think Jalen
• 6:09
Speaker 1: Carter is the best player in this draft. I think
• 6:12
  Speaker 1: there's a lot of baggage. I think there's a lot
• 6:14
Speaker 1: of question marks. I don't think Jalen Carters for everybody.
• 6:16
Speaker 1: If he's sitting there at six and the Lions have
• 6:18
Speaker 1: Hutchinson on one side and they can get Carter on
• 6:21
Speaker 1: the inside, that's a lot to deal with if you're
• 6:24
Speaker 1: an opposing team. And if the draft was last I'll
• 6:28
Speaker 1: say February, or if the draft was in January, Jalen
• 6:32
Speaker 1: Carter's the first overall pick, if not the second. If
• 6:34
Speaker 1: you want to say, that team's going quarterback in Bryce Young.
• 6:37
Speaker 1: So I got the Lions taking him there. Raiders seven,
• 6:40
Speaker 1: Peter Scarnsky at a Northwestern eight Falcons, Nolan Smith, Georgia
• 6:44
Speaker 1: pass rusher nine Bears, Christian Gonzales, a defensive back out
• 6:49
Speaker 1: of Oregon. Ten. Eagles have not selected a running back
• 6:52
Speaker 1: in the first round since nineteen eighty seven, when they
• 6:55
Speaker 1: took Keith Byers. Google Keith Buyers, awesome player at Ohio State.
• 7:00
Speaker 1: I have him going running back Bishan Robinson, and then
• 7:03
Speaker 1: I get really interesting here. Eleven and twelve to Tennessee Titans.
• 7:07
Speaker 1: A ton of talent still on the board in this draft.
• 7:09
Speaker 1: They have needs everywhere. They have a terrible wide receiver's
• 7:13
Speaker 1: room right now. The offensive line is a mess, and
• 7:15
Speaker 1: there's not been a single offensive lineman outside of Scoronski
• 7:18
Speaker 1: or a wide receiver taken he in the draft eleven.
• 7:20
Speaker 1: What do they do. I've got the Tennessee Titans taking
• 7:23
Speaker 1: a quarterback, taking Hendon Hooker at a Tennessee Hendon Hooker
• 7:28
Speaker 1: before Will Levis. Look, it might not go this way.
• 7:31
Speaker 1: I just am hearing a lot of heat on Hooker
• 7:34
Speaker 1: in the last few weeks. Hooker would be a local product.
• 7:37
Speaker 1: He played at Tennessee. He'd be going to the Tennessee Titans.
• 7:40
Speaker 1: Tannehill is there, so as he recovers from an ACL,
• 7:43
Speaker 1: Tannehill would be the starter, at least for a year,
• 7:46
Speaker 1: maybe a year more. Who knows Hooker comes in coming
• 7:50
Speaker 1: off the ACL. And then will Levis is sitting there
• 7:52
Speaker 1: at twelve, And if the Texans still have a twelfth pick,
• 7:55
Speaker 1: I've got them taking will Levis at twelve. Now, will
• 7:57
Speaker 1: Levis is a fascinating story. At one point I thought
• 8:00
Speaker 1: he could have been the first overall pick. Now I'm
• 8:02
Speaker 1: having a hard time finding a team if he slips
• 8:04
Speaker 1: past Indianapolis. I kind of put him at twelve to Houston.
• 8:08
Speaker 1: Would Houston pass on a quarterback twice by saying they
• 8:11
Speaker 1: wouldn't take one at second. They wouldn't take one at
• 8:13
Speaker 1: fourth and then take one at twelve and feel good
• 8:15
Speaker 1: about it. I don't know. It's a mock draft Will Levis.
• 8:19
Speaker 1: I needed a place for him. I feel like the
• 8:20
Speaker 1: Houston Texans desperately need a quarterback. I think it makes
• 8:23
Speaker 1: some sense Will Levis, the Texans at twelve, Jets, Broderick Jones, Patriots,
• 8:28
Speaker 1: Devin Witherspoon, the cornerback at Illinois, some of him going
• 8:31
Speaker 1: in the top five, top six. I got him going
• 8:33
Speaker 1: fourteen and going second on the cornerback to Christian Gonzales fifteen,
• 8:38
Speaker 1: Green Bay. How fun would this be? Jackson Smith Nijibba.
• 8:42
Speaker 1: I think I'm saying that right, Nijigba Nijigba. Ohio State
• 8:46
Speaker 1: obviously teams love him. He's a talent, and the Packers.
• 8:49
Speaker 1: Would that not be the ultimate salt in the wound
• 8:51
Speaker 1: to Rodgers. They never drafted a wide receiver or a
• 8:53
Speaker 1: tight end in the first round while Rodgers was there.
• 8:55
Speaker 1: Never not once they traded up and got Jordan Love,
• 8:58
Speaker 1: but they did not take a wide receiver. If they
• 9:00
Speaker 1: were to take a wide receiver at fifteenth. Overall, I
• 9:03
Speaker 1: think it's a smart because they need help in the
• 9:05
Speaker 1: wide receiver's room, and B it would be quite a
• 9:08
Speaker 1: dig and quite assaultan the wound to Rodgers. Sixteen Washington,
• 9:12
Speaker 1: Dalton Kincaid, tight end out of Utah, love his game.
• 9:15
Speaker 1: Seventeen Paris Johnson sitting there. I've got the Steelers taking
• 9:18
Speaker 1: him at seventeen eighteen Joey Porter Junior to the Lions.
• 9:23
Speaker 1: Would the Steelers pass on Joey Porter Junior? Everyone say,
• 9:25
Speaker 1: absolutely not. Joey Porter's a legend now hard a situation
• 9:28
Speaker 1: that would be for Joey Porter Junior going to Pittsburgh
• 9:31
Speaker 1: and playing for Mike Tomlin just as his father did.
• 9:33
Speaker 1: I don't know. I feel like after their needs on
• 9:37
Speaker 1: offensive line, I would go Paris Johnson there if he
• 9:39
Speaker 1: was still on the board. So eighteen would be Joey
• 9:41
Speaker 1: Porter Junior. That means the Lions would get Jalen Carter
• 9:44
Speaker 1: and Joey Porter Junior. That would be awesome for them. Again.
• 9:47
Speaker 1: A mock draft ten days out nineteen Tampa, Deontay Banks
• 9:53
Speaker 1: out of Maryland twenty the Seahawks. They already got Anthony Richardson.
• 9:56
Speaker 1: In this draft, they get Lucas van Ness out of Iowa.
• 9:59
Speaker 1: Twenty one Chargers. They take Michael Mayer, talented tight end
• 10:02
Speaker 1: at a Notre Dame Ravens Darnell Wright offensive tack Tennessee
• 10:07
Speaker 1: Vikings at twenty three. A lot to talk about them
• 10:09
Speaker 1: possibly moving up for a quarterback. I have them stay
• 10:11
Speaker 1: input getting Jordan Addison the wide receiver at a USC
• 10:15
Speaker 1: This dude with Justin Jefferson together would be quite a duo.
• 10:18
Speaker 1: They lost Adam Thielen. Jaguars go Brian Branch, defensive back
• 10:21
Speaker 1: out of Jacksonville. Twenty five the Giants. Everyone all lies
• 10:25
Speaker 1: on the Giants. They took a small, undersized wide receiver
• 10:27
Speaker 1: who didn't do much last year in Wondale Robinson. I
• 10:30
Speaker 1: have them going for a small, undersized wide receiver in
• 10:32
Speaker 1: the first round this year. Yeah, this guy has accomplished
• 10:35
Speaker 1: way more in his college career, going Zay Flowers out
• 10:38
Speaker 1: of Boston College. Giants fans already crushing me online saying
• 10:41
Speaker 1: there's no way they would do that. They would not
• 10:43
Speaker 1: go back to wide receiver. Guess what they might. Twenty
• 10:46
Speaker 1: six Cowboys Jamiir Gibbs running back at Alabama. Zeke's gone.
• 10:49
Speaker 1: They fill them in with Gibbs. Gibbs talented player compared
• 10:52
Speaker 1: to Alvin Kamara. Finish out this draft Bills and Aaron,
• 10:56
Speaker 1: I know you're a Bills fan. Defensive end Miles Murphy
• 10:59
Speaker 1: at a Clemson Bengals tight end Darnell Washington. I know
• 11:03
Speaker 1: they got Irv Smith, but they might not be done
• 11:05
Speaker 1: in that position. And I go wide receiver Jonathan Mingo
• 11:08
Speaker 1: to the Saints. I don't have anyone else anywhere online
• 11:11
Speaker 1: having Mingo as a first round pick. I'm hearing too
• 11:12
Speaker 1: much buzz about him. I'm just throwing him in there
• 11:15
Speaker 1: at twenty nine. We'll see what the league says. If
• 11:16
Speaker 1: I get a bunch of text texting me saying he's
• 11:18
Speaker 1: a third round prospects that around prospect, get him out
• 11:20
Speaker 1: of there. He won't be in my final mock draft thirty.
• 11:23
Speaker 1: Will McDonald the fourth at of Iowa State. Talented dude,
• 11:27
Speaker 1: great story. Matt Campbell is the head coach of Iowa State.
• 11:32
Speaker 1: He is dear friends with Nick Sirianni. They go back
• 11:34
Speaker 1: a long way. I could see him talking up McDonald.
• 11:37
Speaker 1: Them getting what they do is building on the inside out.
• 11:40
Speaker 1: That would mean they'd get Bjon Robinson and Will McDonald.
• 11:42
Speaker 1: Pretty good first day for the Eagles. And last the
• 11:46
Speaker 1: Chiefs at thirty one, Quinton Johnson towering wide receiver at
• 11:50
Speaker 1: a TCU. Now some notes as you listen, and I
• 11:53
Speaker 1: just spit all that at you. It's going to change
• 11:56
Speaker 1: from now till a few days from now. So this
• 11:59
Speaker 1: is obviously not gospel. I can't tell you which things
• 12:01
Speaker 1: come from which teams, but trust me, this doesn't come
• 12:04
Speaker 1: throwing things at the wall. Also, last year they were
• 12:07
Speaker 1: thirteen day one trades thirteen so all this can be
• 12:11
Speaker 1: ripped up and thrown away once the draft starts. But Aaron,
• 12:14
Speaker 1: that is my mock draft. I take it very seriously.
• 12:17
Speaker 1: I take a lot of pride in it, something that
• 12:19
Speaker 1: I always say, it's almost like a PSA announcement that
• 12:22
Speaker 1: I do on Good Morning Football. I don't know how
• 12:24
Speaker 1: to scout. I don't know how to watch film. I
• 12:27
Speaker 1: just don't have it in me. I try. I've sat
• 12:29
Speaker 1: down in those rooms and been like, all right here
• 12:31
Speaker 1: in the three four scheme, watch the off the ball linebacker.
• 12:34
  Speaker 1: I can't. It doesn't have I love the stories, I
• 12:37
Speaker 1: love the action, I love the drama of the field,
• 12:40
Speaker 1: but I love the intrigue of the business of football,
• 12:43
Speaker 1: and the draft is the business of football. So a
• 12:45
Speaker 1: lot of mock drafts are written and done by guys
• 12:47
Speaker 1: who will tell you what they think a team should do.
• 12:50
Speaker 1: Or here's why Jordan Addison should go before JSN whatever
• 12:55
Speaker 1: his nickname is from from Ohio State, Jackson Smith, Nijigba, Nijigba.
• 13:00
Speaker 1: I gotta get that right. It's gonna be a star
• 13:01
Speaker 1: in the league. I gotta know it. I take a
• 13:03
Speaker 1: lot of pride and saying I don't know any of that.
• 13:05
Speaker 1: It's not what I think the team should do. It's
• 13:07
Speaker 1: what I think they might do, and hopefully there's a
• 13:10
Speaker 1: place for that in the mock draft ecosystem. I don't
• 13:13
Speaker 1: make fun of mock drafters. I don't make fun of
• 13:15
Speaker 1: the idea of mock draft. I think it's low hanging
• 13:17
Speaker 1: through people. Do they think it's stupid. I've never not
• 13:20
Speaker 1: clicked on a mock draft. I love it. I find
• 13:22
Speaker 1: it interesting, and I'll tell you what the teams do too.
• 13:26
Speaker 1: My mock draft is currently up at NFL dot com.
• 13:29
Speaker 1: If you're listening to this during the week, you'll find
• 13:31
Speaker 1: it out one of those side panels. You can also
• 13:32
Speaker 1: find it on my Twitter timeline. It will change, it
• 13:35
Speaker 1: will change, but for now. We have fun, We throw
• 13:38
Speaker 1: things out there, and we try to get you the
• 13:40
Speaker 1: most information as possible. My guest is someone I've been
• 13:43
Speaker 1: wanting to have on before the draft because I think
• 13:46
Speaker 1: this side of Daniel Jeremiah might be the smartest draft
• 13:49
Speaker 1: voice that we've got out there. As far as the
• 13:51
Speaker 1: players go. He scouts them all all year long, and
• 13:55
Speaker 1: then his job is to recruit them and get them
• 13:57
Speaker 1: to participate in his Senior Bowl All Star game. His
• 14:01
Speaker 1: name is Jim Naggy. He's got a long history in
• 14:04
Speaker 1: the league, and he left a very good job and
• 14:06
Speaker 1: see working for the Seahawks front office to be the
• 14:09
Speaker 1: guy who runs the Senior Bowl. If you don't know
• 14:11
Speaker 1: what the Senior Bowl is, it's a senior all star
• 14:14
Speaker 1: game of the best college football talent in the country.
• 14:17
Speaker 1: And not only does he have to get these players
• 14:19
Speaker 1: to agree to come, he's got to get them to
• 14:20
Speaker 1: agree to come and participate over the course of the
• 14:23
Speaker 1: week and go through rigorous examination, and at the end
• 14:26
Speaker 1: of it, a lot of them help their draft stocks.
• 14:28
Speaker 1: Jim Naggy is his name. He is our guest, and
• 14:31
Speaker 1: we're going to get to him right now. I'm so
• 14:36
Speaker 1: excited about our guests. I think it's the perfect guest
• 14:39
Speaker 1: as we are heading towards the draft next week and
• 14:42
Speaker 1: all the mock drafts are coming out, and this is
• 14:44
Speaker 1: smoke screens season, and everyone's acting as if they're an
• 14:47
Speaker 1: expert on these players, both on the field and off.
• 14:49
Speaker 1: There may be no greater closer person to some of
• 14:55
Speaker 1: these young men than our guests. It is the executive
• 14:58
Speaker 1: director of the Senior Bowl and a guy whose opinion
• 15:00
Speaker 1: I really value and whose work ethic I absolutely respect.
• 15:04
Speaker 1: Jim Naggy. Welcome to the season with Peter Schrager.
• 15:09
Speaker 3: Peter, great to be on man. Thanks for having me
• 15:11
  Speaker 3: all right.
• 15:11
Speaker 1: So, for viewers and listeners who might not be familiar
• 15:14
Speaker 1: with your background NFL scout front office guy for years.
• 15:18
Speaker 1: I know you as Seattle, but New England as well.
• 15:21
Speaker 1: Take us through your path a little bit in the
• 15:24
Speaker 1: NFL and how you got to where you are right now.
• 15:26
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 15:26
Speaker 4: I had a one year brief stint with the former
• 15:31
Speaker 4: team known as the Washington Redskins. Was my first job
• 15:33
Speaker 4: in the league. John Schneider, who's the GM in Seattle,
• 15:37
Speaker 4: hired me. There was there one year. John and Marty
• 15:40
Speaker 4: Schottenheimer got shown the door after an eight and eight
• 15:42
Speaker 4: season when Marty probably should have won Coach of the
• 15:44
Speaker 4: Year that year, considering what our roster looked like. You
• 15:47
Speaker 4: go eight and eight, Tony Banks is our starting quarterback.
• 15:50
Speaker 4: We won a couple of games with Kent Graham. I mean,
• 15:52
Speaker 4: it's a pretty good year. So then I ended up
• 15:54
Speaker 4: in New England for a good run. After that, started
• 15:56
Speaker 4: scouting on the West coast and then moved to the Midwest.
• 15:59
Speaker 4: From there, I went to Kansas City with Scott Pioli,
• 16:01
Speaker 4: our general manager when he got the job in Kansas City.
• 16:04
Speaker 4: Scott does great work for the NFL network now. And
• 16:07
Speaker 4: then I went to Seattle for five years before taking
• 16:09
Speaker 4: this job. And this was really the senior bal thing
• 16:11
Speaker 4: was really a family decision. Mobiles my wife's hometown. We've
• 16:14
Speaker 4: been here since two thousand and seven.
• 16:16
Speaker 3: To raise our kids.
• 16:17
Speaker 4: So when this job came open, it was too good
• 16:20
Speaker 4: to not jump at. I called John Schneider. I said, John,
• 16:22
  Speaker 4: I gotta I gotta go for this, don't I And
• 16:24
Speaker 4: He's like, you're dang right, you do. So here we
• 16:26
Speaker 4: are five years later, just finished up our fifth Senior
• 16:28
  Speaker 4: Ble and the.
• 16:29
Speaker 1: Senior ball has grown and grown under your stewardship. What
• 16:34
Speaker 1: is your role as executive director in getting to know
• 16:36
Speaker 1: these young men and getting them those invites to the
• 16:39
Speaker 1: premier college All Star game.
• 16:40
Speaker 4: You know, Peter, I'll say this has been a great
• 16:42
Speaker 4: game forever many My predecessor Phil Savage, the former Browns
• 16:46
Speaker 4: GM did an awesome job here.
• 16:48
  Speaker 3: You know.
• 16:48
Speaker 4: The biggest goal was to was to really market the
• 16:51
Speaker 4: game a little better, and that's through social media. We've
• 16:53
Speaker 4: really used social media as as an incredible tool.
• 16:56
Speaker 3: Helped us recruiting too.
• 16:57
Speaker 4: I mean that was really the biggest thing is to
• 16:58
Speaker 4: is connect with these players and recruit these players.
• 17:01
  Speaker 3: You know.
• 17:01
Speaker 4: So yeah, that's that's my biggest role in terms of
• 17:03
Speaker 4: these players is just scouting upright, created real football operation.
• 17:08
Speaker 3: Got tape in the office.
• 17:08
Speaker 4: We never had tape here in the office, so the
• 17:11
Speaker 4: league office made us jump through some hoops to do that.
• 17:13
Speaker 4: But thankfully that first year they allowed us to get
• 17:15
Speaker 4: access to the tape, and you know, we track them
• 17:18
Speaker 4: all the way through.
• 17:19
Speaker 3: We're already jumping on twenty twenty four.
• 17:21
Speaker 4: I started on the running backs yesterday, watch five or
• 17:23
Speaker 4: six running backs, and then we take it all the
• 17:25
Speaker 4: way through the year, you know, and differing levels. You know,
• 17:28
Speaker 4: if I go out and do a hand invite like
• 17:30
Speaker 4: I do with some of the smaller school guys, I
• 17:32
Speaker 4: get to know them a little earlier in the process.
• 17:33
Speaker 4: And then you know, goal of mine is just to
• 17:35
Speaker 4: get to know them while they're down here in Mobile
• 17:37
  Speaker 4: for the week.
• 17:37
Speaker 3: And again it's always varying levels.
• 17:39
Speaker 4: Of you know, my communication with these guys, but that's
• 17:42
Speaker 4: my goal every week by the time they leave, I
• 17:44
Speaker 4: want to have some good one on one interaction with
• 17:46
Speaker 4: all of them so.
• 17:47
Speaker 1: You get to know them in the recruitment process of
• 17:49
Speaker 1: getting to play in the game. And then once they
• 17:50
Speaker 1: get to the game, it's a week in Mobile, Alabama,
• 17:54
Speaker 1: they're playing for a team, but you're in all those meetings.
• 17:57
Speaker 1: You're getting to know these guys, you know them inside
• 17:59
Speaker 1: and out by the time that week is over in January.
• 18:01
Speaker 3: Correct, Yeah, try to you know, try it.
• 18:04
Speaker 4: That's the fun part is popping in some of these
• 18:06
Speaker 4: bizz meeting rooms at night. And obviously that the team
• 18:08
Speaker 4: interviews are very private and I would never try to
• 18:11
Speaker 4: overstep my bounds there. But I do get a lot
• 18:13
Speaker 4: of good feedback from from buddies around the league and
• 18:15
Speaker 4: who did a good job in interviews and you know
• 18:17
Speaker 4: how different guys presented, and then obviously just the on
• 18:20
Speaker 4: field takeaways. You're down here, you know, the NFL network
• 18:23
Speaker 4: comes down here in mass They send everybody and just
• 18:26
Speaker 4: the takeaways from being on the field and watching who's
• 18:28
Speaker 4: taking coaching and who's competing, and you know, little things
• 18:31
Speaker 4: like body language, facial expressions when they're in these really
• 18:34
Speaker 4: highly competitive situations. Man, I mean that's you see some
• 18:37
Speaker 4: of the head coaches. I mean I feel like every
• 18:39
Speaker 4: single post that I put out, I did one this
• 18:42
Speaker 4: morning and there's Mike Tomlin in the background, Mike to
• 18:44
Speaker 4: Mike t gets in all this stuff. So just some
• 18:47
Speaker 4: great takeaways. Yeah, try to learn these guys the best
• 18:49
  Speaker 4: we can.
• 18:49
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 18:50
Speaker 1: So it's an information thing for a lot of us
• 18:52
Speaker 1: going into the combine too. So it's our first dip
• 18:55
Speaker 1: of the toes the college All Star Games, but this
• 18:57
Speaker 1: is really the premiere one and these are the guys
• 18:58
Speaker 1: that are going to the NFL. So for me, I
• 19:01
Speaker 1: look at the Senior Bowl and I analyze every player
• 19:04
Speaker 1: in there, and I get to get all the information
• 19:06
Speaker 1: I do from the teams that were coaching those guys
• 19:09
Speaker 1: get out of that. And I remember last year, and
• 19:10
Speaker 1: I don't have any problem saying this. I had lunch
• 19:13
Speaker 1: with Robert Sala before the draft and we were talking about,
• 19:17
Speaker 1: would you know the Jets do this, would Jets do that?
• 19:19
Speaker 1: And he said, you know, we don't need a quarterback.
• 19:21
Speaker 1: But we were down in the Senior Bowl and it's
• 19:24
Speaker 1: the fourth quarter and it's you know, it's whatever, and
• 19:26
Speaker 1: you could say what, it doesn't matter. And Desmond Ridder
• 19:29
Speaker 1: pulls over the entire team on the sideline and he
• 19:31
Speaker 1: looks and says, I got you, guys, I'm going to
• 19:33
Speaker 1: lead us here. And he's like, I love what that
• 19:35
Speaker 1: kid's made out of. The littlest thing like that that travels,
• 19:39
Speaker 1: that goes a long way. And that's something that the
• 19:41
Speaker 1: Jets coaching staff, which didn't take Desmond Ridder, would never
• 19:45
Speaker 1: have known had they not had Desmond Ridder at the
• 19:48
Speaker 1: Senior Bowl. And of course now Desmont Ridder is a
• 19:49
Speaker 1: starting quarterback in the NFL.
• 19:51
  Speaker 3: That's right.
• 19:52
Speaker 4: You know, I think, Peter, what these teams are really
• 19:54
Speaker 4: trying to drill down on right now on it if
• 19:56
Speaker 4: you talk to all thirty two man who loves football
• 20:00
Speaker 4: and who are the really truly competitive guys, So like
• 20:03
Speaker 4: you know, I think the common thought out there is
• 20:05
Speaker 4: that Senior Bowl practice week matters a ton in the game,
• 20:08
Speaker 4: maybe not so much. And that's because most of the
• 20:10
Speaker 4: you know, most of the key decision makers get on
• 20:12
Speaker 4: a plane on Friday after Thursday night interviews and they
• 20:15
Speaker 4: get out of dodge. But it's not like it's not
• 20:18
Speaker 4: like the game tape isn't being watched right, Like it's
• 20:21
Speaker 4: there's no there's no game that gets watched more in
• 20:23
Speaker 4: draft meetings than the Senior Bowl game tape. And we
• 20:25
Speaker 4: wore it out every team I ever worked for. But yeah,
• 20:28
Speaker 4: it is the little takeaways. Man, It's the little things
• 20:30
Speaker 4: that you can kind of grab onto. Because I say
• 20:32
Speaker 4: this all the time, you know, it really is this
• 20:35
Speaker 4: whole quote unquote pre draft process. It's a short period
• 20:37
Speaker 4: of time. I mean you're talking January to April. You
• 20:40
Speaker 4: got about four months to really figure these guys out
• 20:42
Speaker 4: and who you want to give, you know, millions and
• 20:44
Speaker 4: millions of dollars to so you do. Sometimes you grab
• 20:47
Speaker 4: on a little stuff like that and it goes a
• 20:49
Speaker 4: long way. And I think when you get a Desmond
• 20:51
Speaker 4: Ritter that's in that in that situation, yeah, it might
• 20:53
Speaker 4: not seem like the biggest deal to the outside world,
• 20:56
Speaker 4: but he's a competitor, like he's in there, and to me,
• 20:58
Speaker 4: those those are the little takeaways that that really it
• 21:01
Speaker 4: seems like a little thing, but it's really a kind
• 21:04
Speaker 4: of a window into a much bigger thing.
• 21:05
Speaker 1: I don't have it in front of me, and I apologize.
• 21:08
Speaker 1: I don't have the list of the guys who were there,
• 21:10
Speaker 1: but I have memories, and you know, I've been watching
• 21:12
Speaker 1: clips saying, who are the six quarterbacks who were at
• 21:15
Speaker 1: the Senior Bowl this year?
• 21:17
Speaker 4: This year it was Max dug In from TCU, j
• 21:20
Speaker 4: Kaner from Fresno State, Clayton Tune from Houston, Jaren Hall
• 21:24
Speaker 4: from BYU, Malik Cunningham from Louisville, and Tyson Bagent from Shepherd. So, yeah,
• 21:29
Speaker 4: this was a year, a different year. You know, we've
• 21:31
Speaker 4: had I think seven straight in Hendon Hooker.
• 21:33
  Speaker 3: Hennon was down.
• 21:34
Speaker 4: He was obviously injured and he couldn't really participate on
• 21:36
Speaker 4: the field, but went through all the interview stuff and
• 21:39
Speaker 4: was in the in the classroom with the teams.
• 21:40
Speaker 3: And again, we we've.
• 21:42
Speaker 4: Never invited an injured player in my five years, but
• 21:44
Speaker 4: I felt like Kennon was kind of a one off
• 21:46
Speaker 4: special case. But yeah, we have like a seven year
• 21:49
Speaker 4: run of first round quarterbacks. Maybe Hendon extends that streak.
• 21:52
Speaker 4: Maybe that streaks and Jeopardy, But it was a cool
• 21:54
Speaker 4: quarterback group because they were all kind of graded similarly
• 21:57
Speaker 4: like most teams when we do our call process in
• 22:00
Speaker 4: February before we put the roster together. That's part of
• 22:03
Speaker 4: our process too, is really bouncing you know, Sharon grades
• 22:06
Speaker 4: with the teams and really bouncing stuff off. That's where
• 22:08
Speaker 4: the relationships come in. I mean, most of the teams
• 22:11
Speaker 4: had all these guys in that you know, early day
• 22:13
Speaker 4: three area and and that you know, Senior Bowl week
• 22:16
Speaker 4: was kind of where we start sorting those guys out
• 22:18
Speaker 4: and really you know, and then combine and obviously Pro
• 22:21
Speaker 4: Day and the workouts and the interviews all matter. But
• 22:24
Speaker 4: down here watching those guys throw back to back to
• 22:26
Speaker 4: back kind of help those guys in that you know,
• 22:28
Speaker 4: a third, fourth, fifth round area.
• 22:29
Speaker 1: Hendon Hooker was there. He's getting a little bit of
• 22:32
Speaker 1: buzz right now, Late buzz. I had my mock draft
• 22:34
Speaker 1: come out today and I've got him going before Will Levis,
• 22:37
Speaker 1: which has rocked the Internet and people are freaking out.
• 22:39
Speaker 1: I'm hearing really positive things about not only his meetings,
• 22:43
Speaker 1: about his early recovery, and about the leadership skills that
• 22:47
Speaker 1: he brings to a team. Can you talk to us
• 22:48
Speaker 1: about Hendon Hooker a little bit, even if he'd get
• 22:50
Speaker 1: to play in the senior ball, the fact he was
• 22:52
Speaker 1: there and was able to show his face, he did
• 22:54
Speaker 1: interact with teammates and also coaching staffs. I think that
• 22:57
  Speaker 1: says a lot.
• 22:58
Speaker 3: Like I said, that was that was a one off.
• 22:59
Speaker 4: That's that's not a president we want to set, you know,
• 23:01
Speaker 4: because again I think there will be some some people
• 23:04
Speaker 4: that take advantage of that. Oh well, I'd love to go, Jim,
• 23:06
Speaker 4: but I've got an ankle, like just use use the
• 23:09
Speaker 4: game for the interview process, and we're not going to
• 23:11
Speaker 4: go down that road. But to me, Hendon deserved it.
• 23:13
Speaker 4: You know, he was one of the faces of college
• 23:14
Speaker 4: football this year. Got to see him play a couple
• 23:17
Speaker 4: of times this fall. I mean, just a really good player.
• 23:18
Speaker 4: And again, because the quarterback position, the meeting time, in
• 23:21
Speaker 4: the interview is like all that stuff being so important,
• 23:24
Speaker 4: I kind of felt like we owed that to Hendon,
• 23:25
Speaker 4: you know, and he's done a great job and I'll
• 23:28
Speaker 4: take it here. Just kind of something time relevant with
• 23:31
Speaker 4: the Jalen Hurts signing yesterday, right, I mean, Jalen.
• 23:33
Speaker 3: Hurts came down here. Everybody had him in the fourth
• 23:36
  Speaker 3: or fifth round.
• 23:36
Speaker 4: We had him in the fourth round coming in a
• 23:38
Speaker 4: Senior Bowl week leading up to that draft. Like to me,
• 23:41
Speaker 4: the comp for me was Dak Prescott and now we've
• 23:44
Speaker 4: seen Jalen. I think Howie Roseman got questioned big time
• 23:47
Speaker 4: when he made the draft pick, you know, fifty three overall.
• 23:49
Speaker 4: Everyone thought that was way too high for Jalen. But
• 23:51
Speaker 4: if you I mean, I think the lesson, at least
• 23:53
Speaker 4: for me, Like the takeaway from Jalen was don't ever
• 23:55
Speaker 4: put a ceiling on these guys that are like high
• 23:57
Speaker 4: end competitors, high end workers, high end leaders.
• 24:00
Speaker 3: And say what you want about Hendon's tape.
• 24:02
Speaker 4: We can all watch his tape and pick apart scheme
• 24:04
Speaker 4: and things of that nature. But he's the same as
• 24:07
Speaker 4: Jalen in those three areas. Now they're a little bit
• 24:09
Speaker 4: a little bit different personalities. Jalen's like super intense. I
• 24:12
Speaker 4: know you've probably spent time around him, like he's a
• 24:14
Speaker 4: really intense guy. Hendon's a little more laid back than that.
• 24:17
Speaker 4: But in terms of the worker the competitor, like, that's
• 24:20
  Speaker 4: why that's why you're seeing that rise. I know you're
• 24:22
Speaker 4: talking to guys around the league. That's why teams are
• 24:24
Speaker 4: feeling good about him because of all that stuff that
• 24:27
  Speaker 4: you can't coach.
• 24:28
  Speaker 3: Man.
• 24:28
Speaker 4: You can't by the time they're by the time they're
• 24:30
Speaker 4: in their twenties. Like the work ethic, the competitor like,
• 24:33
Speaker 4: that stuff's instilled. You can work on the on the
• 24:35
Speaker 4: field stuff, but you can't work on that stuff. So
• 24:37
Speaker 4: to me, that's why Hendon's making kind of this what
• 24:40
Speaker 4: you'd call maybe a late rise.
• 24:41
Speaker 1: All Right, the exercise we're gonna do, no one knows
• 24:44
Speaker 1: these guys better than you. I'm sure you're biased towards
• 24:46
Speaker 1: the senior Bowl players. I'm gonna maybe go with some underclassmen.
• 24:49
Speaker 1: We're gonna do an exercise can also gonna be a
• 24:50
Speaker 1: draft of sorts. We're gonna ping pong back and forth.
• 24:53
Speaker 1: And this is called My Favorite five players with Jim
• 24:57
Speaker 1: Naggy and what it is. I'm gonna name my favorite player,
• 25:00
Speaker 1: You're gonna name your next favorite player, and it doesn't
• 25:02
Speaker 1: have to be in any order. Just guys that we love,
• 25:04
Speaker 1: you fall in love with people through the draft process,
• 25:07
Speaker 1: and my first one is boring as hell. It is
• 25:10
Speaker 1: someone that you're gonna say, Shrieker, that's not Bryce Young
• 25:13
Speaker 1: is my favorite player in this draft. I absolutely loved
• 25:15
Speaker 1: getting to know this guy. I love that he's different.
• 25:18
Speaker 1: I like the fact that he's undersized and has worked
• 25:21
Speaker 1: that way his entire career and has had great success
• 25:24
Speaker 1: in the SEC. And from all the things I'm hearing
• 25:26
Speaker 1: about in these meetings with teams, he has been just awesome,
• 25:30
Speaker 1: a leader, competent, loves football, and I think the size
• 25:36
Speaker 1: thing is cool, Like it's not my team, I'm not
• 25:39
Speaker 1: drafted him first. Overall, I love guys who break the mold.
• 25:42
Speaker 1: And you know, the comparisons are funny because I asked.
• 25:46
Speaker 1: I asked a GM. I'm like, all right, give me
• 25:48
Speaker 1: a comparison because Kyler's the first one or Drew Brees
• 25:50
Speaker 1: the first one, but give me a comparison of the
• 25:52
Speaker 1: way he plays the game. And the comparison I got
• 25:55
Speaker 1: was Steph Curry, and I thought that was so cool.
• 25:57
Speaker 1: So then I was like, all right, that's really cool.
• 25:58
Speaker 1: And then I asked another GM, all right, who would
• 26:00
Speaker 1: you compare Bryce Young two? And he goes, I compare
• 26:03
Speaker 1: him to Trey Young on the Hawks, and I'm like,
• 26:05
Speaker 1: that's the second an NBA point guard that has been
• 26:07
Speaker 1: compared to. Like the NFL is changing, He's not built
• 26:11
Speaker 1: like other NFL quarterbacks, and yet I still think he
• 26:13
Speaker 1: might be the first overall pick. He's my favorite player
• 26:16
Speaker 1: in this draft. Your thoughts on Bryce Young do you
• 26:19
Speaker 1: have any Did you get to know him at all?
• 26:20
Speaker 1: And when you see him on tape as a former scout,
• 26:23
Speaker 1: what do you see?
• 26:24
Speaker 4: I almost went with Bryce as well Peter at the
• 26:26
Speaker 4: top because I didn't want to be accused of being
• 26:28
Speaker 4: a senior ble homer. But yeah, I have had the
• 26:31
Speaker 4: chance to meet Bryce without it. Actually met him a
• 26:33
Speaker 4: couple of years ago at a camp out in Santa
• 26:35
Speaker 4: Monica for the first time, and man, that the takeaway there.
• 26:39
Speaker 4: And I found this over over the years with with
• 26:42
Speaker 4: leaders and quarterbacks, like he's really comfortable in his own skin.
• 26:45
Speaker 3: Like you said, he's he's a little bit different.
• 26:47
Speaker 4: I mean I remember the first conversation we started talking
• 26:49
Speaker 4: about cooking, Like the dude loves to cook, Like he's
• 26:52
  Speaker 4: kind of got.
• 26:53
Speaker 3: Some renaissance man to him.
• 26:54
Speaker 4: You know, he's not, but he's comfortable in his own skin.
• 26:57
Speaker 3: He's really he's the genuine article. He is who he is.
• 26:59
Speaker 4: You know, I think teammates are going to follow him
• 27:01
Speaker 4: because again the work ethic part, and he talks about
• 27:04
Speaker 4: Mac Jones and Max's influence on it and seeing Mac
• 27:07
Speaker 4: work his freshman year.
• 27:08
Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm with.
• 27:09
  Speaker 1: You, man.
• 27:10
Speaker 4: He's a really fun guy to study on those point
• 27:12
Speaker 4: guard things make sense because he is a really he's
• 27:14
Speaker 4: a distributor, and in his defense, like he wasn't distributing
• 27:18
Speaker 4: to the same people that maybe mac Intua were. You know,
• 27:21
Speaker 4: there was a drop off in in skill talent at
• 27:23
Speaker 4: Alabama over the last couple of years, and they were young.
• 27:25
Speaker 4: I mean I think they were talented, they were just
• 27:27
Speaker 4: young guys. He was throwing to a bunch of young
• 27:28
Speaker 4: guys that maybe weren't up to speed. So yeah, I
• 27:31
Speaker 4: think he's, Uh, he's going to be a cool pick.
• 27:32
Speaker 4: I think he is going to go to Carolina. I'd
• 27:34
Speaker 4: be at this point, I'd be surprised if he if
• 27:36
  Speaker 4: he wasn't, But yeah, he's he's he's a really good player,
• 27:39
Speaker 4: really cool kid. Kind of breaks the mold in a
• 27:41
Speaker 4: lot of different ways. But you spend time around and
• 27:43
  Speaker 4: really easy guy.
• 27:44
Speaker 1: To like, all right, give us your number two, a
• 27:47
Speaker 1: guy that you love.
• 27:48
Speaker 4: So I'll I guess we'll start alphabetically with the double
• 27:51
Speaker 4: a's at a time at a bare from from north
• 27:54
Speaker 4: coast to it. So I've been practicing that for like
• 27:57
Speaker 4: five or six months now. He was on Bruce Feldman's
• 28:00
Speaker 4: Freaks List. I'm sure you see Bruce's uh, you know
• 28:03
Speaker 4: article that comes out every year. We we've collaborated with
• 28:06
Speaker 4: brucell a little bit over the last couple of years
• 28:07
  Speaker 4: on that list.
• 28:08
Speaker 3: Tried to add a few names for him. But he
• 28:10
  Speaker 3: always brings.
• 28:10
Speaker 4: Guys like at a time of wood to the table
• 28:12
  Speaker 4: that I didn't.
• 28:13
Speaker 3: Know a lot about. He's really rare. He's a unique player.
• 28:16
Speaker 4: I mean, you can't throw around like scouts are very
• 28:19
Speaker 4: touchy when it comes to descriptors and adjectives and things
• 28:22
  Speaker 4: of that nature.
• 28:23
Speaker 3: But like rare is rare.
• 28:25
Speaker 4: And when you get a two hundred and eighty two
• 28:26
Speaker 4: pound man running four four nine and he's got thirty
• 28:30
Speaker 4: four inch arms, so he's got explosion, he's got length,
• 28:32
Speaker 4: he's got all these things you want to look for.
• 28:34
Speaker 4: But then on tape you see him playing kind of
• 28:36
Speaker 4: a stand up edge position at Northwestern, which that's I
• 28:39
Speaker 4: don't think that's what most teams see him, ask No,
• 28:42
Speaker 4: I think they see him as a three technique.
• 28:44
Speaker 3: So that's where we played him during Senior Bowl week.
• 28:46
Speaker 4: And again in a really small exposure against a bunch
• 28:50
Speaker 4: of first, second, and third round offensive linemen. During that week,
• 28:54
Speaker 4: he was voted the defensive Lineman of the week by
• 28:56
Speaker 4: the guys he played against. That offensive line voted him
• 28:59
Speaker 4: the defensive lineman of the week at a position he'd
• 29:01
Speaker 4: never really played before, which tells you like, wow, what's
• 29:04
Speaker 4: this guy going to be in like two or three years.
• 29:06
Speaker 4: So again, really talented guy. Best football is way ahead
• 29:11
Speaker 4: of him, and he's starting to creep into those you know,
• 29:13
Speaker 4: first round mocks a little bit, but he wasn't anywhere
• 29:16
Speaker 4: near there, you know, a couple months ago. So it's
• 29:18
Speaker 4: cool to see him rise. And again I just I
• 29:20
Speaker 4: just think the tools you're you're gonna hit on it.
• 29:22
Speaker 4: I mean, he works too hard, he's got too much,
• 29:24
Speaker 4: too much talent in his body not to become a
• 29:26
  Speaker 4: good player.
• 29:27
Speaker 1: Cool wrinkle there. I believe he's a Kansas City native,
• 29:30
Speaker 1: grew up being a diehard Chiefs fan, and his whole
• 29:34
Speaker 1: thing at the combine. When I spoke to his agent
• 29:36
Speaker 1: was it would mean the world to be drafted in
• 29:38
Speaker 1: the first round in Kansas City. Right now, I have
• 29:40
Speaker 1: him right outside the first round, but who cares what
• 29:43
Speaker 1: I have. A team might take him and I would
• 29:44
Speaker 1: love to see that for him. My next guy, I'm
• 29:47
Speaker 1: gonna go again with a kind of chalk pick here,
• 29:50
Speaker 1: a player that everyone is starting to fall in love
• 29:52
Speaker 1: with and has been watching for years. But I'm going
• 29:55
Speaker 1: with Nolan Smith at a Georgia a pass rusher. One
• 29:59
Speaker 1: of those deals where is he a product of the
• 30:02
Speaker 1: system and there being a thousand NFL players or is
• 30:05
Speaker 1: he a freak show that we overlooked during the college
• 30:08
Speaker 1: season as one of these premier guys because of the
• 30:10
Speaker 1: blowouts and because of what they were doing. This guy
• 30:13
Speaker 1: ran a four to three nine forty as a defensive end.
• 30:16
Speaker 1: He is an amazing young man. Great interview, and I
• 30:19
Speaker 1: go back to the high school stuff, which I always
• 30:21
Speaker 1: try to value and say, Okay, well what happened from
• 30:22
Speaker 1: here to number one high school recruit in the country
• 30:25
Speaker 1: when he decided to go to Georgia, had a wonderful career,
• 30:27
Speaker 1: was sec Newcomer of the Year the whole thing, and
• 30:30
Speaker 1: then you get into a defense with Jordan Davis and
• 30:33
Speaker 1: Nakobe Dean and Jalen Carter and Trayvon Walker and Kwai Walker,
• 30:36
Speaker 1: and the list goes on and on and on, and
• 30:38
Speaker 1: your name kind of gets buried. I think he's worked
• 30:40
Speaker 1: his way up to being a top ten pick based
• 30:42
Speaker 1: on the combine performance and what he's done over the
• 30:44
Speaker 1: course of his career.
• 30:46
Speaker 3: That's a good one, Peter, I love it.
• 30:47
Speaker 4: He was our top rated senior defensive player coming into
• 30:50
Speaker 4: the fall based off as junior tape.
• 30:52
Speaker 3: He was at the top of the board last year.
• 30:54
Speaker 3: Really talented guy, man.
• 30:55
Speaker 4: I'll say this like, I'm not saying he's more talented
• 30:59
Speaker 4: than Jalen Carter, but when we had a bunch of
• 31:01
Speaker 4: Georgia defensive players in last year's Senior Bowl, so you
• 31:04
Speaker 4: know that whole defense was loaded. Obviously, watch a ton
• 31:06
Speaker 4: of tape on that unit. I saw him play live
• 31:09
Speaker 4: a couple of times, and Jalen Carter definitely flashed, but
• 31:13
Speaker 4: Nolan or Nolan Smith flashed more to me than Jail
• 31:15
Speaker 4: really yeah, and so we you know, then when we
• 31:18
Speaker 4: got into the actual you know dig you know, deep
• 31:21
Speaker 4: dive email over the summer. Man, You're like, okay, this
• 31:23
Speaker 4: this guy's super talented. So then I think he was
• 31:26
Speaker 4: gonna run four threes.
• 31:27
Speaker 3: At the combine. I didn't know about that. That's Jim.
• 31:30
Speaker 1: He threw his phone. He was like pissed. He ran
• 31:31
Speaker 1: four three nine. He wanted faster.
• 31:33
  Speaker 3: That's insane. That's insane.
• 31:35
Speaker 4: So yeah, Man as an outside linebacker, kind of a
• 31:37
Speaker 4: do it all outside linebacker.
• 31:39
  Speaker 3: He's a really cool player.
• 31:40
Speaker 4: And again you talk about talk about the person. I
• 31:42
Speaker 4: got to meet him at the SEC media days back
• 31:44
Speaker 4: in August or July or whatever that was. And again
• 31:47
Speaker 4: just to really put together guy, really really sharp.
• 31:50
Speaker 3: I don't I don't know how you miss on Nolan Smith.
• 31:52
  Speaker 3: I really don't.
• 31:53
Speaker 1: All Right, who's your next guy?
• 31:55
Speaker 3: Next guy is Cody Mauck from North Kota State. Love him,
• 32:00
Speaker 3: Love this guy. I'm on record. I've probably spoken too
• 32:03
Speaker 3: much about Cody over.
• 32:04
Speaker 4: The last few months, but uh, you know, to me,
• 32:06
Speaker 4: he's the only five position offensive lineman in this year's draft.
• 32:10
Speaker 4: Played left tackle at North Kota State.
• 32:11
Speaker 3: Made it look easy.
• 32:12
Speaker 4: I mean, his tape was as when you talk about
• 32:15
Speaker 4: what tape's fun to watch, I think Cody Maux's tape
• 32:18
Speaker 4: was as fun as any player in this draft.
• 32:19
Speaker 3: You know, just him just wearing.
• 32:21
Speaker 4: People out at that level comes down here to Tomobile.
• 32:24
Speaker 4: Plays guard, plays center. A lot of teams thought he
• 32:27
Speaker 4: might be able to play that, and now they've seen
• 32:29
Speaker 4: him do it, so it's not you know, scouts always
• 32:31
Speaker 4: talk about quote unquote blind projections. They want to see
• 32:33
Speaker 4: him do it first. Now we've seen Cody play all
• 32:35
Speaker 4: five spots. I think he played left tackle, center, and
• 32:38
Speaker 4: right guard in the Senior Bowl game, so you can
• 32:41
Speaker 4: move around within a game. He's got the brain to
• 32:43
Speaker 4: handle that. And I think what gets lost and like
• 32:46
Speaker 4: the flowing red locks and the no front teeth and
• 32:49
  Speaker 4: all that.
• 32:49
Speaker 3: This dude's an unbelievable athlete. He really is.
• 32:52
Speaker 4: Like he's nasty on tape and he wears people out.
• 32:56
Speaker 4: But this dude is such a good athlete. So to me,
• 32:58
Speaker 4: I don't think there's thirty one better players in the draft.
• 33:00
Speaker 4: I know we only have thirty one picks in the
• 33:02
Speaker 4: first round, but I mean if I had a first
• 33:04
Speaker 4: round pick, if I was a GM, I mean, this
• 33:05
Speaker 4: guy would be an easy because wherever you have your
• 33:08
Speaker 4: kneed up front, you're gonna be able to plug him
• 33:10
Speaker 4: in and to me, he's going to be a pro
• 33:11
  Speaker 4: Bowl level player.
• 33:12
Speaker 1: I love Cody Maunk flowing red hair and no front teeth,
• 33:16
Speaker 1: and you bury that that's the fifteenth thing you said.
• 33:18
Speaker 1: I love that he's an incredible personality. We'd love to
• 33:21
Speaker 1: get to know him during the senior ball practices. My
• 33:27
Speaker 1: next one again Chalk. You might say, come on, Sregger,
• 33:32
Speaker 1: you're just going with the biggest names, but I love
• 33:33
Speaker 1: a blue chip player. I'm going with b Jean Robinson.
• 33:37
Speaker 1: I've telling you I've been watching this guy for years. Obviously,
• 33:40
Speaker 1: you could spot talent at the college level. There's a
• 33:42
Speaker 1: lot of great running backs, but I feel like he's
• 33:43
Speaker 1: a cut above. I feel like he's the best running
• 33:45
Speaker 1: back to enter a draft since maybe Jonathan Taylor, and
• 33:48
Speaker 1: I think he might be the best running back as
• 33:51
Speaker 1: a rookie since Saquon Like this guy. I watch him.
• 33:54
Speaker 1: It seems like he's floating on air everything I touch him.
• 33:57
Speaker 1: The time he touches the ball, he goes he can
• 33:58
Speaker 1: catch the ball. I know running back is not a
• 34:01
Speaker 1: cool thing in the first round anymore. I have him
• 34:03
Speaker 1: going in the top ten. I think the Eagles take him,
• 34:05
Speaker 1: even though the Eagles never take running I just think
• 34:07
Speaker 1: there are very few blue chip players in this draft.
• 34:10
Speaker 1: And I'm not knocking the draft that you don't watch
• 34:12
Speaker 1: the draft because of the amount of blue chip players.
• 34:14
Speaker 1: You watch the draft because you want to see who
• 34:16
Speaker 1: your team gets. This guy is a blue chip player,
• 34:18
Speaker 1: and if this draft was ten years ago, he might
• 34:20
Speaker 1: go first overall. If this draft was twenty years ago,
• 34:23
Speaker 1: he might go first overall. In this year's draft, he
• 34:25
Speaker 1: might go twentieth because the running back position is so undervalued.
• 34:29
Speaker 1: I love watching him play. The comparisons I make art
• 34:32
Speaker 1: to Saquon, but people have more historical ones. Have you
• 34:35
Speaker 1: had a chance to watch Bijon at all? And what
• 34:37
Speaker 1: is you in your take on his game?
• 34:38
Speaker 3: I agree with everything you just said.
• 34:41
Speaker 4: You know the hard part in this role now is
• 34:45
Speaker 4: you know when you're a scout, when you're working in
• 34:46
Speaker 4: the league. I wasn't on social media, you know, I
• 34:50
Speaker 4: wasn't on the internet. Like you make your own evail
• 34:52
Speaker 4: and then once you feel good about your eveil, then
• 34:54
Speaker 4: you can maybe open it up and see what else
• 34:56
Speaker 4: is out there, what other people are thinking about players.
• 34:58
Speaker 3: But in this role, obviously I live on.
• 35:00
Speaker 4: Social media to a degree, so you see all this
• 35:04
Speaker 4: stuff about Bijeon, right, and you hear about it, you see,
• 35:06
Speaker 4: and then when I actually sat down to watch him,
• 35:08
Speaker 4: is like, wow, this guy is This guy's the truth.
• 35:10
Speaker 4: I mean, I'm with you there. There might not be
• 35:13
Speaker 4: you know, one or two better players in this entire draft.
• 35:15
Speaker 4: He makes it look easy, Peter. I mean, he just
• 35:17
Speaker 4: he makes it look easy. You know, at the highest
• 35:19
Speaker 4: level of college football, the run stuff looks easy. He
• 35:22
Speaker 4: just runs with an ease, He catches it with an ease.
• 35:24
Speaker 4: I think he's going to be a big time, big
• 35:26
Speaker 4: time player. And I'm with you, like ten ten could
• 35:28
Speaker 4: be a cool landing spot because Eagles GM Howie Roseman's
• 35:31
Speaker 4: on record he's saying like he likes a zig when
• 35:34
Speaker 4: other people are zagging, right, And if the league's going
• 35:36
Speaker 4: away from running back right now, you know, in coach Belichick,
• 35:40
Speaker 4: who I worked for for for all those years in
• 35:41
Speaker 4: New England, like they're always looking for market, you know, efficiencies,
• 35:45
Speaker 4: and and if teams are passing on running backs and
• 35:47
Speaker 4: they don't see value there early, but then maybe it's
• 35:49
Speaker 4: going to be one of these gms that that that.
• 35:51
Speaker 3: Is going to do something the opposite.
• 35:52
Speaker 4: So yeah, man, such a such an easy player to
• 35:55
Speaker 4: to like and fun, fun player, fun player.
• 35:57
Speaker 1: Give me your third name. Who's your third guy you
• 35:59
Speaker 1: want us to look out for?
• 36:01
Speaker 4: Little two for one, I'll go with the Brown brothers
• 36:04
Speaker 4: from Illinois. I was gonna go with Sidney Brown, but
• 36:08
Speaker 4: throwing his twin brother Chase as well.
• 36:10
Speaker 3: To me, Sidney's a guy that, frankly, like I was
• 36:13
  Speaker 3: too low on.
• 36:13
Speaker 4: There's always a few guys that show up in Mobile
• 36:15
Speaker 4: that are are better players, and I give them credit
• 36:17
Speaker 4: for off the tape.
• 36:18
  Speaker 3: I'll say this.
• 36:19
Speaker 4: As soon as those two guys get off the bus.
• 36:21
Speaker 4: They get off the bus from the airport, there's like
• 36:23
Speaker 4: a little registration room where we start, I mean player
• 36:25
  Speaker 4: registration days.
• 36:26
  Speaker 3: Crazy.
• 36:26
Speaker 4: They got medical stuff, they got psychological testing, they've got
• 36:30
Speaker 4: photo shoots, they've got all this stuff.
• 36:32
Speaker 3: Those two guys get off the bus, and.
• 36:33
Speaker 4: I'm telling you, Peter, like within a minute You're like, Okay,
• 36:35
Speaker 4: these guys are different, like the Brown brothers are different.
• 36:38
Speaker 4: Sydney's a little more outgoing, got got you know, like
• 36:40
Speaker 4: a little more charisma than Chase. Chase is a little
• 36:43
Speaker 4: more a little more laid back. But but there they
• 36:46
Speaker 4: are special dudes. They've they've got a great story. You
• 36:49
Speaker 4: can google it. I'm not going to wear out your listeners,
• 36:51
Speaker 4: but google the story about the Brown brothers and in
• 36:53
  Speaker 4: their background.
• 36:53
Speaker 3: Really cool. But Sidney's like this.
• 36:56
Speaker 4: Rocked up Bob Sanders looking strong safety, right, and so
• 37:00
Speaker 4: you want to say, you just want to say box
• 37:01
Speaker 4: safety because of how he's built. He's just like this
• 37:04
Speaker 4: chiseled up specimen. And then you more you watch, you're like, man,
• 37:07
Speaker 4: he's there. He just made a playing coverage and then
• 37:09
Speaker 4: it made another playing coverage. So he ends a season
• 37:12
Speaker 4: with seven interceptions, and he's got some like Johnny on
• 37:15
Speaker 4: the Spot tip ball stuff and.
• 37:16
  Speaker 3: He's making plays.
• 37:17
Speaker 4: He comes down here to the Senior Bowl and it's
• 37:19
Speaker 4: kind of like Jalen Petrie last year from Baylor, who
• 37:22
Speaker 4: had a great rookieyear for the Houston Texans in the
• 37:24
Speaker 4: one on one stuff with tight ends and receivers, like
• 37:26
Speaker 4: Sidney was blanketing people and making plays on the ball,
• 37:29
Speaker 4: like he if he's around the ball, he's going to
• 37:31
  Speaker 4: finish on it.
• 37:32
  Speaker 3: You know.
• 37:32
Speaker 4: Like we talk about players that can't find the ball
• 37:34
Speaker 4: or they can't play the ball, like Sidney's the opposite.
• 37:37
Speaker 4: He's unbelievable. When he was when he's in the reach
• 37:39
Speaker 4: of the ball, so I just think Sidney's a guy
• 37:41
Speaker 4: that and then all the testing, like the Combine stuff
• 37:44
Speaker 4: was ridiculous. Forty inch vertical, eleven foot broad all that
• 37:48
Speaker 4: high end testing stuff.
• 37:49
Speaker 3: So to me, he's a no brainer.
• 37:50
Speaker 4: I think he's worked himself up into somewhere in probably
• 37:53
Speaker 4: the second round range, which probably was he started off
• 37:55
Speaker 4: the process, probably in the fourth and he's just one
• 37:58
Speaker 4: of my favorite dudes. I would want him in my
• 38:00
Speaker 4: locker room. He's going to be infectious, He's going to
• 38:02
Speaker 4: be a captain. Just loves Sidney Brown and and love
• 38:05
Speaker 4: his brother Chase too.
• 38:06
Speaker 1: That's awesome. My fourth name, I'm going with Will McDonald,
• 38:10
Speaker 1: the fourth out of Iowa State. I love this kid.
• 38:12
Speaker 1: I love his story, and I like the fact that
• 38:14
Speaker 1: he competed at the Combine despite a one hundred and
• 38:17
Speaker 1: four fever that he came down with and said, hell,
• 38:20
Speaker 1: I'm going for it. I'm trying to ultimate competitor. Matt
• 38:23
Speaker 1: Campbell speaks the world of him. I've got him going
• 38:25
Speaker 1: in the first round. I don't see many other monks
• 38:27
Speaker 1: having him there. They have him as a second round pick.
• 38:28
Speaker 1: He might be a second round pick. I love what
• 38:31
Speaker 1: he did at Iowa State. I think that he is
• 38:32
Speaker 1: an athletic freak. I also like the way he's made
• 38:35
Speaker 1: up and kind of the way he had And I
• 38:37
Speaker 1: know he was a senior Bowl guy. What'd you think
• 38:39
Speaker 1: of him when you got to meet him.
• 38:40
Speaker 3: Well, you saved me, Peter, you saved me a spot.
• 38:42
Speaker 3: I was gonna say, Will McDonald's go with.
• 38:45
Speaker 1: Him, to go with him as your fourth it's not.
• 38:48
Speaker 4: It's not, but I was hoping maybe you would throw
• 38:50
  Speaker 4: him in there.
• 38:51
Speaker 3: I'll say this about Will.
• 38:52
  Speaker 4: I think you're right. I think he's going to be
• 38:53
Speaker 4: a first round pick. Talking to guys in the league,
• 38:55
Speaker 4: there's way too much to like. I mean, he's got
• 38:57
Speaker 4: production on paper. He's got thirty some sacks over the
• 38:59
Speaker 4: last three years, and he wasn't really put in a
• 39:01
Speaker 4: position to get sacks in that defense. You know, like
• 39:04
Speaker 4: he was really always tied tight to the tackle. You
• 39:07
Speaker 4: never saw him. You never got to see him like
• 39:09
Speaker 4: really out wide and just like coming off the edge.
• 39:11
Speaker 4: He's probably the bendiest pass rusher in this year's draft.
• 39:13
Speaker 4: He's long, he's put on a bunch of weight through
• 39:16
Speaker 4: the process. He's already put on you know, ten to
• 39:18
Speaker 4: fifteen pounds since the Senior Bowl, So he's trending in the.
• 39:21
Speaker 3: Right direction that way.
• 39:22
Speaker 4: Like you talked about the athletes six to nine high
• 39:24
Speaker 4: jumper in high school, I think the team, the teams
• 39:27
Speaker 4: talking to him, they love the competitor, they love the
• 39:29
Speaker 4: fact that he had a fever and a lot of
• 39:31
Speaker 4: people would have shut themselves down and not done the
• 39:33
Speaker 4: combine thing, and he did it. I think he's helped
• 39:35
Speaker 4: himself as much as anyone through this process. He's talking
• 39:38
Speaker 4: to a head coach the other day. He thinks he's
• 39:40
Speaker 4: going to come out of the shoots next year and
• 39:41
Speaker 4: be a double digit sack guy. And if there's a
• 39:43
Speaker 4: love for him in the league like that, if coaches
• 39:45
Speaker 4: think this guy could be a double digit.
• 39:46
Speaker 3: Sack guy, we didn't have one last year.
• 39:48
Speaker 4: Aiden Hutchinson, I think had the league with rookies and
• 39:50
Speaker 4: he was like eight or nine. If there's teams out
• 39:53
Speaker 4: there that feel like this guy could get ten secks
• 39:54
Speaker 4: as a rookie, he's going to go in the top
• 39:56
  Speaker 4: thirty one pick.
• 39:57
Speaker 3: So I think you're going to be right on that.
• 39:59
Speaker 1: Peter keive us another name.
• 40:02
Speaker 3: I would go with.
• 40:03
Speaker 4: Michael Wilson from Stanford a little later down the road.
• 40:05
Speaker 4: It's not a first second round guy like we've been
• 40:07
Speaker 4: talking about. But Michael Wilson's a guy again probably showed
• 40:10
Speaker 4: up a lot better than I would have thought. You know,
• 40:11
Speaker 4: going through the Stanford tape, you know, you really polished,
• 40:14
Speaker 4: You really like the route runner, you really like the hands.
• 40:17
Speaker 4: You love how they talk about him, David Sewan, those
• 40:19
Speaker 4: guys at Stanford like rave about about Michael Wilson. And
• 40:23
Speaker 4: when you said put your favorite group together, I've thought about, Okay,
• 40:26
Speaker 4: if I was putting a team together, who would I
• 40:27
Speaker 4: want in my locker room.
• 40:29
  Speaker 3: Michael Wilson's different.
• 40:30
Speaker 4: He reminds me a little of Terry mclaur in that way,
• 40:33
Speaker 4: like when when Terry, when Terry came down to the
• 40:34
Speaker 4: Senior Bowl, I told every team that called that year,
• 40:39
Speaker 4: like they said, Jim, who would you want? And Terry
• 40:41
Speaker 4: was always my first guy because of first and foremost
• 40:44
Speaker 4: the person that Terry was like, and I was on
• 40:46
Speaker 4: I was on records, and I think Terry could be
• 40:48
Speaker 4: the CEO of a Fortune five hundred company when he's
• 40:50
Speaker 4: done playing football. Like that's how that's how intelligent and
• 40:53
Speaker 4: driven the guy is. And Michael Wilson's different too. I
• 40:55
Speaker 4: mean for the wide receiver position. He just gets it.
• 40:58
Speaker 3: When you talk to him, you feel like.
• 40:59
Speaker 4: You're talking to like a thirty year old grown up
• 41:01
Speaker 4: and then coming down here like bring it back. On
• 41:03
Speaker 4: the field, he's he's more explosive than I gave him
• 41:06
Speaker 4: credit for, or plays faster than he tested. You watch
• 41:08
Speaker 4: our tape and he's getting deep on guys he only
• 41:11
Speaker 4: ran four or five or high four fours, whatever it was. Well,
• 41:14
Speaker 4: he consistently got to deep levels of the field against
• 41:16
Speaker 4: guys that ran four to three at and he so
• 41:18
Speaker 4: he plays fast, he plays explosively, explosive.
• 41:21
  Speaker 3: In a draft where there's.
• 41:22
Speaker 4: A bunch of five eight, five nine, one hundred and
• 41:25
Speaker 4: seventy pound guys, this guy's six foot two, two hundred
• 41:27
Speaker 4: and fifteen pounds. So yeah, I just don't think you
• 41:30
Speaker 4: can go wrong. He had some injury stuff at Stanford.
• 41:32
Speaker 4: You know, if he stays healthy, I think this guy's
• 41:34
Speaker 4: a really good starter in the league.
• 41:36
Speaker 1: Love it all right, We're gonna leave our last picks,
• 41:38
Speaker 1: and these are the guys that we love and that
• 41:40
Speaker 1: we can't wait to see get drafted. My last one
• 41:42
Speaker 1: is a wide receiver. Was at the Senior Bowl comes
• 41:45
Speaker 1: from a factory of wide receivers of late who all
• 41:48
Speaker 1: the similar build and yet, for whatever reason, Jim, I
• 41:50
Speaker 1: feel like you and I are the only ones on
• 41:52
Speaker 1: the island who have been pushing this guy as a
• 41:53
Speaker 1: first round pick. I'm going with Jonathan Mingo. Love Mingo.
• 41:58
Speaker 1: Love that he's six foot two, two twenty, Love that
• 42:00
Speaker 1: he's built like a different wide receiver shape than most
• 42:03
Speaker 1: of the guys that you're seeing in these first round bocks.
• 42:06
Speaker 1: I look at the history. I know he was injured,
• 42:08
Speaker 1: I know he's got issues as far as production at
• 42:11
Speaker 1: the college level. But I look at aj Brown, I
• 42:13
Speaker 1: look at Elijah Moore, I look at DK Metcalf, and
• 42:16
  Speaker 1: I look at Ole Miss and I say, here's a
• 42:18
Speaker 1: six to two, two twenty chiseled wide receiver who has
• 42:21
Speaker 1: good route running from what I see, and actually has
• 42:24
Speaker 1: good hands, and yet he's considered some crazy project because
• 42:27
Speaker 1: he didn't have one hundred catches a game. I'm going
• 42:30
Speaker 1: with Jonathan Mingo. I know you know the guy really well.
• 42:33
Speaker 1: What are you hearing on, Mingo? And do you think
• 42:35
Speaker 1: there's a chance he goes in the first round? As
• 42:36
Speaker 1: I have it, the Saints taking him at the end
• 42:38
Speaker 1: of the first round.
• 42:39
Speaker 4: That would be a cool pick down here on the
• 42:41
Speaker 4: Gulf Coast. This is the Mobile is a big Saints
• 42:44
Speaker 4: fan base. I know they would be fired up about
• 42:45
Speaker 4: an SEC guy there. I'm with Jan Mingo, I'm with
• 42:49
Speaker 4: you on him. I'll say this, I'll throw another name,
• 42:51
Speaker 4: Ole Miss name out, Dawson Knox.
• 42:54
  Speaker 3: Dawson Knox.
• 42:54
Speaker 4: I mean, go back and look at Dawson Knox's college
• 42:56
Speaker 4: production at ole Miss. So you know, John started out
• 42:59
Speaker 4: that year hot, and by the time I saw him
• 43:01
Speaker 4: in mid season against LSU, they were throwing the ball
• 43:03
Speaker 4: to Malik Heath on the other side because you know,
• 43:06
Speaker 4: I had done enough early in the season where he
• 43:08
Speaker 4: was starting to pull coverage his way. So they started
• 43:10
Speaker 4: feeding Malik Keith on the other side, which is which
• 43:13
Speaker 4: is smart my whole miss. But but I'm with you.
• 43:15
Speaker 4: There's a good track record there. This guy is a springy,
• 43:18
Speaker 4: springy athlete for someone with that size that's six '
• 43:20
Speaker 4: to two. Again, we're talking about a guy that's like
• 43:22
Speaker 4: five six inches and forty to fifty pounds heavier than
• 43:26
Speaker 4: some of these guys being mocked, you.
• 43:27
Speaker 1: Know, all the other first round guys.
• 43:29
Speaker 4: Yeah, right, so I'm with you on Mingo. I think
• 43:33
Speaker 4: he's going to be. You know, we always do the
• 43:34
Speaker 4: better pro than college player thing. I think he's gonna
• 43:37
Speaker 4: end up, like a lot of these guys from Ole Missill,
• 43:39
Speaker 4: end up being a you know, at least production wise,
• 43:40
Speaker 4: the better pro than he was college player.
• 43:42
Speaker 1: Who's your last player that you got before we let
• 43:45
Speaker 1: you go? Give us the last player one of your
• 43:46
Speaker 1: favorite players in this draft? Who is it?
• 43:48
Speaker 4: Jim Naggy, Well, it probably goes back to my Seahawks
• 43:52
Speaker 4: background a little bit, and that'd be Julius Brentz, the
• 43:54
Speaker 4: corner from Kansas State. Again like at a time, and well,
• 43:57
Speaker 4: we're talking about rare stuff.
• 43:59
Speaker 3: This guy's got rare stuff. He's got the.
• 44:00
Speaker 4: Longest wingspan of any corner since Scout started doing the
• 44:03
  Speaker 4: wingspan thing.
• 44:04
Speaker 3: That was only like fifteen years ago.
• 44:06
Speaker 4: Year we didn't always do the wingspanl He's the longest
• 44:10
Speaker 4: corner on record. He's an eleven six broad jumper, he's
• 44:13
Speaker 4: a forty two inch vertical jumper. And the difference between
• 44:16
Speaker 4: him and most sixty three corners, I mean, this guy's
• 44:18
Speaker 4: got fluid movement skills. And again, Richard Sherman came out.
• 44:21
Speaker 4: I was way too low on Richard Sherman. I got
• 44:24
Speaker 4: caught up in some of his movement. I didn't give
• 44:26
Speaker 4: him enough credit for his high level instincts and ball skills.
• 44:29
Speaker 4: This guy can move now, man, he is fluid. He
• 44:32
Speaker 4: had a great week down here. I just think you
• 44:34
Speaker 4: know the upside of the player, Hardy. How do you
• 44:37
Speaker 4: throw around a guy that's six foot three with pterodactyl arms,
• 44:41
Speaker 4: that can that can jump out of the gym.
• 44:42
Speaker 3: I mean, just put the ball around him. He's gonna
• 44:44
Speaker 3: he's gonna find a way to go get it.
• 44:46
Speaker 1: How many pounds is hey, what's the way at He's.
• 44:48
Speaker 4: Two hundred pounds, So we're talking a six three trend corner.
• 44:52
Speaker 4: He reminds me of a guy named Ben Saint ju
• 44:53
Speaker 4: Just who starts for the Washington Commanders right now. Ben
• 44:56
Speaker 4: went the third round out of Minnesota a few years
• 44:58
Speaker 4: ago when we had him here, and I think Julie
• 45:00
Speaker 4: is coming out, you know, probably probably going to be
• 45:03
Speaker 4: a higher draft pick than than Ben. They're just similar
• 45:06
Speaker 4: body to guy. So yeah, man, I again my sea
• 45:08
Speaker 4: hockey thing at corner. Give me some Julius prints.
• 45:12
Speaker 1: I love it. Jim a couple quick rapid fire questions
• 45:16
Speaker 1: for you before we let you go. Your favorite player
• 45:20
Speaker 1: to ever enter the Senior Bowl and play Senier Bowl Week,
• 45:24
Speaker 1: as you were the executive director of the past five years,
• 45:26
Speaker 1: who's the guy that you look back on, You're like, gosh,
• 45:28
Speaker 1: I was so happy to have that guy down in Mobile.
• 45:31
Speaker 4: I would say Justin Herbert, And I would say that
• 45:34
Speaker 4: for a couple of reasons, Like Justin was already going
• 45:36
Speaker 4: to be at worst a mid first round pick, right
• 45:39
Speaker 4: Like he wasn't going to get out of the middle
• 45:41
Speaker 4: of the first round. He still chose to come down here,
• 45:45
Speaker 4: put himself out there in the greatest part about it
• 45:48
Speaker 4: with the narrative on Justin was oh, he's introverted. You
• 45:51
Speaker 4: know what kind of leadership, you know what kind of
• 45:53
Speaker 4: competitor is this guy? And I think he put all
• 45:56
Speaker 4: that to rest down here in Mobile. I mean he
• 45:58
Speaker 4: connected with his teammates again, similar to Bryce Young, who
• 46:01
Speaker 4: he talked about. I mean, Justin's comfortable in his own skin,
• 46:04
Speaker 4: he's genuine teammates, all that from him, and I just think,
• 46:08
Speaker 4: you know, having him down here and him buying into
• 46:10
Speaker 4: what he could get out of Senior Bowl Week.
• 46:12
Speaker 3: Man, I'll always be indebted to him, and he's.
• 46:14
Speaker 4: He's one of the guys like he followed up after
• 46:16
Speaker 4: the game and called me and thanked me for letting him.
• 46:18
Speaker 1: Go down, and he was the MVP of that day.
• 46:20
Speaker 1: I remember I was like, what.
• 46:21
Speaker 4: Are you talking about, Like, you don't need to thank me, man,
• 46:22
Speaker 4: I need to thank you for coming and being a
• 46:24
Speaker 4: part of this thing.
• 46:25
Speaker 1: I'll never forget interviewing him, but right before the draft
• 46:28
Speaker 1: in twenty twenty, it was the COVID year and he
• 46:31
Speaker 1: had won Rose Bowl MVP, Senior Bowl MVP, and the
• 46:34
Speaker 1: narrative was he can't lead, he can't win a big game.
• 46:38
Speaker 1: He can't you know, he's got no alpha skills. He's
• 46:42
Speaker 1: just a robot that could throw. And I remember asking
• 46:43
Speaker 1: him about it and he says, I'm going to cut
• 46:45
Speaker 1: you off right there, respectfully. And you know it's him
• 46:47
Speaker 1: with the long hair and he's got the look. And
• 46:50
Speaker 1: he says, just before even going with that, can you
• 46:53
Speaker 1: just do me a favor and ask some of my
• 46:54
Speaker 1: teammates before we even mentioned that kind of commentary. And
• 46:56
  Speaker 1: I'm like, wow, that's a good answer. I like that.
• 46:58
Speaker 1: So he's one of those quiet, confident guys and their
• 47:01
Speaker 1: leaders lead in different ways. And Justin Herbert's not gonna
• 47:04
Speaker 1: be the loudest guy. He's not gonna be great on
• 47:05
Speaker 1: NFL films, Mike up. But I think you saw what
• 47:07
Speaker 1: we all saw the last few years back when you
• 47:10
Speaker 1: had him at the Senior Bowl.
• 47:11
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
• 47:13
Speaker 4: And I've said this before, but like you watch after
• 47:16
Speaker 4: the game, there's a shot. There was a shot on
• 47:18
Speaker 4: the NFL network post game when all the players are
• 47:20
Speaker 4: coming out and shaking hands and doing stuff. Man, it
• 47:23
Speaker 4: was both teams big small. I mean it didn't Matt like,
• 47:27
Speaker 4: everyone kind of was gravitating up to Justin. And for
• 47:30
Speaker 4: that to materialize over the course of like literally seven
• 47:33
Speaker 4: days that some of those you know, that respect, even
• 47:36
Speaker 4: if it was just the respect level, says a lot.
• 47:38
Speaker 4: But no, man, it's and it's been awesome to watch
• 47:40
Speaker 4: him his career kind of take off. I can't wait
• 47:43
Speaker 4: to see what he's going to do this year with
• 47:44
Speaker 4: Kellen Moore in La.
• 47:46
Speaker 1: Jim, your words carry so much waiting around the league.
• 47:49
Speaker 1: You're one of the most respected guys when it comes
• 47:50
Speaker 1: to not only the NFL Draft, but just personnel and
• 47:53
Speaker 1: scouting in general. No one's got a bad word to
• 47:56
Speaker 1: say about you, and you're doing a fine job with
• 47:57
  Speaker 1: the Senior Bowl. I can't I can't thank you enough
• 47:59
Speaker 1: for joining the podcast. It was the perfect guest and
• 48:01
Speaker 1: this is the perfect conversation before the draft about ten
• 48:04
Speaker 1: days out as we're recording.
• 48:06
Speaker 3: This, well, Peter, thank you so much.
• 48:08
  Speaker 1: Man.
• 48:08
Speaker 3: That's really nice. It's awesome to be on the show. Man.
• 48:11
Speaker 4: I'd love to love to come on again. Maybe we
• 48:13
Speaker 4: can do it after the draft or something. But love
• 48:16
Speaker 4: you're working Good Morning Football man, love the show. You
• 48:19
Speaker 4: guys do an awesome job, so entertaining, such such a
• 48:21
Speaker 4: great thing to wake up to every day.
• 48:23
Speaker 3: We got it in the office.
• 48:24
Speaker 4: Whoever comes into the Senior Bowl office every day, whoever
• 48:26
Speaker 4: gets in first has to turn the TV on and
• 48:28
Speaker 4: it's always on. It's always on Good Morning Football. So
• 48:30
Speaker 4: when we walk in here every day, are you guys
• 48:32
Speaker 4: are on with us?
• 48:33
Speaker 1: Take that straight hand and Robin Roberts and George Stepanopolis
• 48:37
Speaker 1: eat it. Yeah, thank you, I appreciate it. We'll take
• 48:39
Speaker 1: the viewers in Mobile, Alabama all day long. Jim Naggy,
• 48:43
Speaker 1: you're awesome, dude. Executive director of the Senior Bowl and
• 48:46
Speaker 1: as plugged in as anybody with this stuff.
• 48:47
Speaker 3: Thanks dude, yep, thanks Peter.
• 48:50
Speaker 1: That was fun. Aaron, I'm gonna ask you, you think we
• 48:51
Speaker 1: could do this. We could put up a tweet either
• 48:55
Speaker 1: from my Twitter thing or whatever. But we have a
• 48:58
Speaker 1: two side by side lists players we love and it's
• 49:02
Speaker 1: Jim Naggy's five names and it's my five names, and
• 49:06
Speaker 1: viewers and listeners can go google all the highlights and on.
• 49:09
Speaker 1: So maybe we'll do that. Maybe we'll ask for that
• 49:11
Speaker 1: in addition to getting a good social media clip. Draft
• 49:15
Speaker 1: is now less than ten days away. I feel pretty good,
• 49:19
Speaker 1: and I got to tell you I'm excited for it.
• 49:21
Speaker 1: It's a sports event that has no agenda other than
• 49:25
Speaker 1: just good Vibes guys getting drafted, and every team and
• 49:29
Speaker 1: fan base is like feeling positive. Can I tell you
• 49:33
Speaker 1: that I saw a movie that I think is like
• 49:37
Speaker 1: maybe I don't know if it's my favorite movie, but
• 49:39
Speaker 1: like just like good Vibes movie, it felt like a
• 49:41
Speaker 1: throwback and I have to talk about it, and I
• 49:43
Speaker 1: know you haven't seen it yet. I loved Air with
• 49:47
Speaker 1: Damon and Affleck and I went into this thing, dude,
• 49:50
  Speaker 1: like alright, I get it. It's another it's a bite
• 49:53
Speaker 1: of the apple because the last dance was popular and
• 49:56
Speaker 1: everyone's Michael Jordan, okay, and now we're gonna do the
• 49:57
Speaker 1: Michael Jordan's Shoe movie. I kind of roll my eyes
• 50:00
Speaker 1: and affleck. I see him on you know, US Weekly
• 50:03
Speaker 1: and with j Low, and he's doing one hundred interviews
• 50:06
Speaker 1: promote this thing, and I'm like, here's the scenario. My
• 50:09
Speaker 1: wife's best friend, Courtney, was getting married on Saturday, and
• 50:14
Speaker 1: she's a bride'smaid in the wedding, and it was one
• 50:17
Speaker 1: of those deals like where it was like I was
• 50:18
Speaker 1: in my twenties again and I'm not a part of
• 50:21
Speaker 1: the wedding party. My wife's getting hair and makeup done
• 50:24
Speaker 1: at ten am, and I had all day and no agenda,
• 50:28
Speaker 1: nothing to do, I had no responsibilities. So me and
• 50:33
Speaker 1: another one of the bride'smaid's husbands we went to see
• 50:36
Speaker 1: this movie. And I come in at ten thirty in
• 50:38
Speaker 1: the morning to a movie theater. This is like the
• 50:40
Speaker 1: greatest day you can imagine for a guy who's got
• 50:43
Speaker 1: a six week old child at home and a six
• 50:45
Speaker 1: year old child who's keeping me up at all hours,
• 50:47
Speaker 1: Like get to go to this movie. And from the
• 50:51
Speaker 1: very start where it starts with dire straits money for
• 50:55
Speaker 1: Nothing as the opening song. It is a just a
• 50:58
Speaker 1: soundtrack from nineteen eighty four of hits. I don't know
• 51:01
Speaker 1: how Amazon had the budget for this thing. They had
• 51:05
Speaker 1: born in the US. They have like, you know, massive
• 51:10
Speaker 1: hits from start to finish, and they go with the
• 51:13
Speaker 1: movie and every song has a link to the story
• 51:16
Speaker 1: and the story itself. There was no romance in the movie.
• 51:18
Speaker 1: There were no politics in the movie. It was you know,
• 51:21
Speaker 1: I'm rooting for this little upstart, the corporate behemoth Nike,
• 51:25
Speaker 1: Like that's how you come up. You're like, oh, capitalism rules.
• 51:28
Speaker 1: At the end, like it's the it's a fun movie
• 51:31
Speaker 1: and it's just soaked in nostalgia and the way that
• 51:36
Speaker 1: you know, Ben Affleck plays Phil Knight. I've read Shoe Dog.
• 51:39
Speaker 1: I have such great reverence for everything about Phil Knight,
• 51:42
Speaker 1: and then Affleck comes in and kind of takes the
• 51:44
Speaker 1: piss out of them but kind of doesn't and it's
• 51:46
Speaker 1: just you appreciate all of it. If you are a
• 51:49
Speaker 1: sports movie fan. It is the most low investment, low
• 51:54
Speaker 1: stakes movie you can watch. There is a ninety minute
• 51:57
Speaker 1: movie that you can watch, enjoy, be just dripped in
• 52:00
Speaker 1: eighties nostalgia. If you love hoops, if you love you
• 52:04
Speaker 1: know the story of how Nike beat out Adidas, end
• 52:08
Speaker 1: and converse to get Michael Jordan. I can never imagine
• 52:11
Speaker 1: this being a feature film. I absolutely loved it.
• 52:13
Speaker 2: Oh man, well, I'm excited to see it. It reminds
• 52:16
Speaker 2: me a little bit of a Showtime where they have
• 52:19
Speaker 2: the whole storyline in Showtime about Magic Johnson, winning Time,
• 52:23
Speaker 2: Winning Time, about the Showtime. Yeah, yeah, yeah, winning Time.
• 52:28
Speaker 1: It's funny because in that one, it's like, here's Jerry West,
• 52:32
Speaker 1: Here's Magic Johnson, and their portrayals are at times they
• 52:37
Speaker 1: weren't favorable, and they certainly weren't well liked by the subjects.
• 52:41
Speaker 1: Michael Jordan has one word in this movie. You don't
• 52:43
Speaker 1: see his face. It's all about his mother. It's all
• 52:46
Speaker 1: about Sonny Vaccaro, who was the Nike basketball guy. And
• 52:51
Speaker 1: then I'll tell you put Damon Bateman an Affleck in
• 52:56
  Speaker 1: a movie. I'm seeing it. I'm seeing it's Jason Bateman,
• 53:00
Speaker 1: not the greatest, like third man in on a movie
• 53:02
Speaker 1: I've never seen Ozark. I love Teen Wolf too, like
• 53:05
Speaker 1: I have a lot of heart for Bateman. I love
• 53:07
Speaker 1: Arrested development, but like he is perfectly casted in this movie,
• 53:11
Speaker 1: and Viola Davis is perfectly casted in this movie. Can
• 53:15
Speaker 1: you do me a favorite? Can you see it this
• 53:17
Speaker 1: week so we could talk about it next week? Yeah?
• 53:19
Speaker 2: Yeah, I have to see that in Mario, so that'll
• 53:21
Speaker 2: take probably total of three hours, right.
• 53:24
Speaker 1: Both just like they're like fast food and I don't
• 53:27
Speaker 1: even know when Amazon's putting it on Amazon Prime, Amazon
• 53:29
Speaker 1: Prime but partner of the NFL, by the way, probably soon.
• 53:32
Speaker 1: It's you don't have to rush to the theater. But
• 53:34
Speaker 1: like when they start with ah wan my MTV, I'm like,
• 53:38
  Speaker 1: all right, I'm in, let's go. And I don't know.
• 53:40
Speaker 1: The movie was awesome. I loved it, So there you go.
• 53:42
