- 0:50Speaker 2: And Hello and welcome to in the locker room here
- 0:52Speaker 2: in the Steelers Audio Network, the La Trope five hundred
- 0:55Speaker 2: max is underway. Unofficially official it is going on.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Uh yeah, no practice today, but the fields look primed
- 1:05Speaker 3: and ready for practice.
- 1:06Speaker 2: If that's the sad part. Yes, I think they would
- 1:08Speaker 2: have I don't know whether they would have done it differently,
- 1:11Speaker 2: But you think you just got to be cautious with
- 1:13Speaker 2: the weather and the fans and I don't know what
- 1:16Speaker 2: the field conditions like whether it's too wet, but it
- 1:19Speaker 2: has not rained or thunderstorm during the during the period,
- 1:24Speaker 2: so it goes they made the decision. Uh, that's it.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Camp has closed. Heading back to Pittsburgh, heading back to
- 1:30Speaker 2: the South Side facility. Mike McCarthy's saying this morning, in
- 1:34Speaker 2: case you were wondering, great environment, talked about the group
- 1:38Speaker 2: dynamics here. You and I actually had a chance to
- 1:40Speaker 2: have lunch Maax. I know, first time we've been into
- 1:43Speaker 2: lunch room all year. First so during the last time,
- 1:47Speaker 2: and I asked you, you know, your thoughts on the
- 1:51Speaker 2: value of it. Amazing that we're down to it. I think,
- 1:55Speaker 2: what is it? Four teams now they go away for
- 1:58Speaker 2: camp and you can see where the group dynamic, as
- 2:03Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy would say, would be a really good thing.
- 2:08Speaker 2: The team bonding part of it. Mike tom Win used
- 2:11Speaker 2: to talk about that as well, just to you know,
- 2:13Speaker 2: it's you just don't get it in other places.
- 2:17Speaker 3: And because everything else is so individualized, right, you go
- 2:21Speaker 3: to a facility, you go and you have practice at
- 2:26Speaker 3: the facility and maybe you have breakfast and lunch there.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Off the rest of the day, you know, you'll do
- 2:31Speaker 2: your meetings and stuff. But and the lines meeting with
- 2:33Speaker 2: the line and the D lines with the D line.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Separate, you'll have your you know, you'll have a general
- 2:38Speaker 3: team meeting in the morning. Then you'll break off into
- 2:41Speaker 3: into sides at the ball, offense, defense, and then position
- 2:45Speaker 3: groups and then that's it. This forces guys to make
- 2:50Speaker 3: free time team time. I think that's the biggest thing
- 2:54Speaker 3: that this cause. It forces guys to interact with each
- 2:57Speaker 3: other because and Mike McCarthy kind of talked about this
- 2:59Speaker 3: as a press conference, right, it was, you know, some
- 3:02Speaker 3: guys live in the North Hill, some guys live in
- 3:03Speaker 3: the South Hill, some guys live on the East End,
- 3:06Speaker 3: and you don't see each other after you leave the facility, right,
- 3:10Speaker 3: So this is in nighttime, we're figuring out stuff to do.
- 3:13Speaker 3: You know, when I walk up to Team snack where
- 3:16Speaker 3: the guys are hanging out there, they're playing cards, they're
- 3:18Speaker 3: playing connect for they're sitting out there talking, they're listening
- 3:21Speaker 3: to music. Right, guys are playing pool and you're you're
- 3:25Speaker 3: getting that extra inner personal time to get to know
- 3:29Speaker 3: one another. And I think that's an important aspect of
- 3:32Speaker 3: why you come to camp. It's to build chemistry, right,
- 3:35Speaker 3: because you build chemistry. That's a stronger bond, and that's
- 3:40Speaker 3: what's gonna make it that much better on Sunday because
- 3:44Speaker 3: I'm willing to fight because I know this guy. I
- 3:46Speaker 3: know who his kids are, I know who his wife is,
- 3:48Speaker 3: his mom, his dad, siblings, I know what he put
- 3:52Speaker 3: into this. So I got to do my job so
- 3:54Speaker 3: you can do his job. It creates that deeper connection
- 3:57Speaker 3: amongst teammates.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I think it's one of the little edges that the
- 4:03Speaker 2: Steelers create by the way they operate. You know, we've
- 4:06Speaker 2: talked about this in the past that you know, maybe
- 4:09Speaker 2: in another organization a draft pick gets a longer shelf
- 4:16Speaker 2: life because he's a draft pick. And you know, look,
- 4:19Speaker 2: you select a guy because you like him, right, that's
- 4:22Speaker 2: your scouts like him, your coaching staff probably likes him,
- 4:26Speaker 2: so you're willing to give him a little more time.
- 4:29Speaker 2: But there's also sometimes hey, that's a bad look for
- 4:32Speaker 2: a new general manager if a draft choice and a
- 4:35Speaker 2: new coach if they cut a draft choice. You know,
- 4:37Speaker 2: now people are harping on him and bad. Well that
- 4:40Speaker 2: Steelers don't operate that way, never have, and you know
- 4:44Speaker 2: they've cut high draft picks of recent vintage in the past,
- 4:47Speaker 2: and they've allowed you know, we've talked about this before.
- 4:49Speaker 2: They have allowed walk Ons to come on and and
- 4:52Speaker 2: you know, one of them Doney Shells in the Hall
- 4:54Speaker 2: of Fame. You know, Willie Parker's in the Hall of Honor.
- 4:58Speaker 2: You have James Harrison, I mean, you have You've got
- 5:00Speaker 2: is that on. Other teams might not really get a sniff,
- 5:03Speaker 2: not all teams. But again, it's another one of those
- 5:06Speaker 2: little things. And I think that you know, training camp
- 5:10Speaker 2: in Saint Vincent is one of those little things that's
- 5:12Speaker 2: baked into this Judish culture that gives them a little
- 5:15Speaker 2: bit of an edge.
- 5:16Speaker 3: I think, yeah, it creates an edge. And also it
- 5:20Speaker 3: just goes to create the mystique, right the legend of
- 5:24Speaker 3: the Pittsburgh Steelers. I mean, where else can you teut
- 5:27Speaker 3: that one area field I'm pointing to right over here,
- 5:31Speaker 3: the three fields, right, but every single Super Bowl team,
- 5:36Speaker 3: eight of them, yep, all started here, yep, right everywhere
- 5:41Speaker 3: else teams are moving to their facilities, they move into
- 5:43Speaker 3: a new building, a new stadium, like and that's where
- 5:46Speaker 3: we train.
- 5:47Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no. Since nineteen sixty nine, this
- 5:51Speaker 2: is where you come.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Yeah, and they've upgraded things around it, But the bones
- 5:56Speaker 3: are still there. This is still the same area. That
- 5:59Speaker 3: means Joe Gen, Dwight White, Rocky Blier, Frank o'hars, Terry Bradshaw.
- 6:05Speaker 3: The list goes on and on right of guys who
- 6:08Speaker 3: cut their teeth and earn their jobs here. Touching wolf
- 6:13Speaker 3: Right played on those same fields. I played on those
- 6:16Speaker 3: same fields. It's current generations playing on those same fields.
- 6:20Speaker 3: That's something that's really special. And you know, guys will
- 6:24Speaker 3: when you come back. When guys come back, everybody has
- 6:28Speaker 3: a memory from here. It's a shared collective, hive mind
- 6:31Speaker 3: of thoughts about how we feel about this. If I
- 6:36Speaker 3: talk to Mel Blunt on the sidelines, he has a
- 6:38Speaker 3: story somewhere on this field, right. But if I talk
- 6:43Speaker 3: to a guy that's younger, like a Tyson Alowalu, he
- 6:45Speaker 3: has a story from somewhere on this field. We've all
- 6:48Speaker 3: got so somebody has gotten into a fight in every
- 6:50Speaker 3: part of this field over the last five decades, you know.
- 6:55Speaker 3: So that's that's really what makes it really special. And
- 6:58Speaker 3: there is that that's that that brings us all together.
- 7:01Speaker 2: How far back do the players who joined the Steelers,
- 7:07Speaker 2: how far back do they go in their memory of
- 7:10Speaker 2: the Steelers, you know, I mean they you know, I'm
- 7:12Speaker 2: assuming that if you grew up now, you watched Ben
- 7:16Speaker 2: Roethlisberger right when you were a kid. You saw him
- 7:18Speaker 2: on TV, and you saw Lev Bell and you saw
- 7:22Speaker 2: you know, maybe James Harris and Troy Paulamalo, you know
- 7:25Speaker 2: Antonio Brown. You saw these players. Does it go back
- 7:29Speaker 2: further than that? Is it an education for a young
- 7:32Speaker 2: player to come in here and learn about the Steel
- 7:34Speaker 2: Curtain or do a lot of malready know about all
- 7:36Speaker 2: that stuff?
- 7:36Speaker 3: No, it's an education because I mean even for me,
- 7:39Speaker 3: I didn't know as much about the Steel Curtain as
- 7:41Speaker 3: everybody else. I watched football. I knew who players were,
- 7:44Speaker 3: and I you know, I remember players from the eighties
- 7:46Speaker 3: and everything when I was a kid, But you know,
- 7:49Speaker 3: I didn't know the Steel Curtain as it was.
- 7:52Speaker 2: And you come here, it's everywhere. And even when we're.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Sitting in meets, like you know, and you're turning on
- 7:58Speaker 3: the TV, NFL Network has a special about out them, right.
- 8:00Speaker 3: You hear these rumbling voices and all of these NFL
- 8:04Speaker 3: films expose's done on these players and teams. And then
- 8:08Speaker 3: those guys come in and talk to you. We would
- 8:10Speaker 3: have meetings with the former players.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Uh, when I was a rookie. So I remember Rocky.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Buyer, Frank O'harris, mel Blunt, Dayne, Dwayne Woodruff, and somebody else.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Trying to think, oh J T. Thomas thinking. They all
- 8:27Speaker 2: came and spoke to us. Craig Bingham came and spoke
- 8:30Speaker 2: to us. Dwight White came and spoke to us.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Joe Green was at He was on the scouting staff,
- 8:34Speaker 3: so Joe Ring was walking up and down the sidelines,
- 8:36Speaker 3: you know, and he was he was right there for
- 8:38Speaker 3: one on one drills with the old line D line.
- 8:40Speaker 2: And talk of trash. You know. You you just got
- 8:42Speaker 2: around those guys. I mean, I have lunch with Franco
- 8:44Speaker 2: once a month and.
- 8:45Speaker 3: I would catch We'd be he'd be walking from his
- 8:47Speaker 3: office and I'd be leaving my building from my apartment
- 8:50Speaker 3: and we would see.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Each other in the middle of the street. You know.
- 8:52Speaker 3: It was just it was inundated into the culture. And
- 8:54Speaker 3: I think, guys, you know, you have to come in
- 8:58Speaker 3: with a certain level of respect for what it was,
- 9:03Speaker 3: but not necessarily you know, coming in and say, oh
- 9:06Speaker 3: my god, I'm a super Steeler historian that's not gonna happen, right,
- 9:10Speaker 3: But you do need to have a working history of who.
- 9:12Speaker 2: The legends are.
- 9:12Speaker 3: And there's a there's enough hall of famers and legendary
- 9:16Speaker 3: all decade team guys in Super Bowl championship teams to
- 9:19Speaker 3: draw from.
- 9:20Speaker 2: That's not hard. When you walk in that hallway.
- 9:22Speaker 3: You see the six Super Bowl trophies, you see the
- 9:25Speaker 3: pictures behind it, you know the significance of that. And
- 9:28Speaker 3: upstairs on the wall you see every single Steelers team photo,
- 9:32Speaker 3: you know, from the beginning all the way up to
- 9:34Speaker 3: the present. So you're seeing all of that. That history
- 9:37Speaker 3: is around you, and all you have to do is
- 9:39Speaker 3: you don't have to dig deep. You just literally have
- 9:41Speaker 3: to just open your eyes and you'll start to recognize,
- 9:44Speaker 3: like what this place means and what the players that
- 9:47Speaker 3: played here before you, what they meant to this organization.
- 9:50Speaker 2: There's no easy answer for this, and it could be
- 9:54Speaker 2: and I say that because there's everybody's a little bit different.
- 9:57Speaker 2: When does it When does it dawn on you that
- 10:01Speaker 2: the mystique is real and the players from the past
- 10:05Speaker 2: are legends and they are people to be admired and
- 10:09Speaker 2: respect and looked up to. I got to do his
- 10:13Speaker 2: look at the Hall of Fame. How many bronze bus
- 10:17Speaker 2: do you have versus the other organization? Well, I was
- 10:20Speaker 2: have the most. So I asked that. I asked that
- 10:23Speaker 2: because I've told this story before. But you know, while
- 10:27Speaker 2: we're talking about the mystique and and what happens out
- 10:30Speaker 2: here at La Trobe and how it's such a part
- 10:32Speaker 2: of the Steelers history, I was, uh, I think it
- 10:35Speaker 2: was oh uh oh, I can't remember which which player
- 10:41Speaker 2: was Larry Oh no, no, no, old time, Oh Larry Brown.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Larry Brown, you know Wolf always said he entered the
- 10:51Speaker 2: room and his triceps centered like twenty seconds later. So
- 10:55Speaker 2: Larry Larry Brown was. I was at the at the
- 10:59Speaker 2: Steelers one of the students alumni functions over at Acriture Stadium,
- 11:03Speaker 2: and Marky's pouncy sat down and you know, Larry Brown
- 11:08Speaker 2: said to him on the air, you could have played
- 11:11Speaker 2: with us, and off the air, so it did not
- 11:14Speaker 2: to put any pressure on him, I was like, does
- 11:17Speaker 2: that does that resonate? I mean, like, so I could
- 11:20Speaker 2: see some young guys in different sports being like because
- 11:23Speaker 2: it's always a debate, you know, every every generation of
- 11:28Speaker 2: sports fans. Certainly, I kind of call this ESPN effect.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Think that what's going on now is the greatest it's
- 11:34Speaker 2: ever been. It's never been as good as this, and
- 11:37Speaker 2: so you could see that that could potentially permeate into
- 11:41Speaker 2: the athletes. My sense is it permeates less than the athletes,
- 11:45Speaker 2: and it doesn't the fans. But I so I asked Marquis,
- 11:48Speaker 2: I'm like, did that that means something to you? Said? Absolutely,
- 11:52Speaker 2: because his eyes kind of lit up when Larry Brown
- 11:55Speaker 2: said it. Yeah, and that's a compliment, like he's that's
- 11:59Speaker 2: view as you know, Marquise. You know, look who's got
- 12:04Speaker 2: his own legacy and legend in this in this pantheon
- 12:09Speaker 2: of greatness. But it almost felt like that was an
- 12:11Speaker 2: extension of it. Yep, Okay, so now it's like Marquis,
- 12:15Speaker 2: it's almost in a way, his greatness extends through all
- 12:18Speaker 2: of the fifty years, fifty five years of Steelers dominance.
- 12:22Speaker 2: He's yeah, he's in that pantheon. I thought that was
- 12:24Speaker 2: kind of cool. I don't know, I don't know if
- 12:27Speaker 2: that happens in other sports. I can't see another in
- 12:31Speaker 2: other franchise. I doubt it because of because of like
- 12:35Speaker 2: you said, these fields are the same fields. All of
- 12:37Speaker 2: this stuff. We talk about the little advantages coming out
- 12:40Speaker 2: her to camp, but the little, the little parts of
- 12:43Speaker 2: the history that all come together and form this greatness
- 12:47Speaker 2: that all the little pieces of pie. That's one of them.
- 12:50Speaker 2: That that the players I think respect and are and
- 12:53Speaker 2: are really truly respect what came before and are thrilled
- 12:58Speaker 2: to be a part of that.
- 13:01Speaker 3: No, I think you're absolutely right. I think there's very
- 13:03Speaker 3: few teams who can who can make that. I think
- 13:05Speaker 3: there's only actually only one other team that could probably
- 13:07Speaker 3: make the statement that the Steelers, like the Steel Curtain
- 13:09Speaker 3: of the seventies, like where you actually get that kind
- 13:11Speaker 3: of blessing from a group. I would say San Francisco
- 13:14Speaker 3: is probably the next closest Green Bay.
- 13:18Speaker 2: You have to go back to that.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm about to say those guys, those guys are
- 13:21Speaker 3: in walkers and wheelchairs, and I don't try to go
- 13:23Speaker 3: to practice that often.
- 13:24Speaker 2: No, No, are you're right? Yeah?
- 13:26Speaker 3: So I think I think, yeah, it would have to
- 13:27Speaker 3: be that eighties era San Francisco.
- 13:32Speaker 2: It might be it early Dallas, but they're so they're
- 13:38Speaker 2: so cocky. I don't everybody can play with I mean,
- 13:42Speaker 2: the history of your organization is impressive. It's the Yeah,
- 13:45Speaker 2: it's the mistique.
- 13:46Speaker 3: But I think when you have those kind of four
- 13:49Speaker 3: and ten, two and two and or it was what
- 13:53Speaker 3: three and four I think was for the three people
- 13:56Speaker 3: for or the three Super bowls for Dallas in the nineties, right, yeah,
- 14:00Speaker 3: back to back and then they had a year off
- 14:01Speaker 3: and that they went something like that.
- 14:02Speaker 2: But if you have like kind of.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Those snapshots where you could say, okay, definitive five to
- 14:07Speaker 3: ten year spam like this was a group, that's where
- 14:09Speaker 3: those dynasties come in. But contemporaries, Yeah, you gotta wait
- 14:13Speaker 3: twenty thirty years, yeah before that.
- 14:15Speaker 2: I mean, are they gonna look back at the Patriots
- 14:16Speaker 2: and it's going to be mostly Tom Brady? Yeah? You see,
- 14:19Speaker 2: you know what I mean, Tom, You could have played
- 14:21Speaker 2: with me.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Anybody could play with me as long as you can
- 14:24Speaker 3: catch a football.
- 14:26Speaker 2: I did, but I told you to do.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, as long as you do you have two ears,
- 14:30Speaker 3: you know how to listen, all right, you could have
- 14:32Speaker 3: played with us.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I just think that. I think it's a wonderful part
- 14:36Speaker 2: of it. And this training camp it's a little sad,
- 14:40Speaker 2: you know, I mean, it's I mean, you know, everybody,
- 14:43Speaker 2: there's some you know, groaning, you gotta come up to
- 14:45Speaker 2: La Trob, but it's far away. I wanted one more fight.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I wanted one more fight, Rob. We didn't get one
- 14:50Speaker 2: more fight, were you?
- 14:51Speaker 3: Uh?
- 14:51Speaker 2: I was happy about that fight yesterday. Land Yeah, Oh
- 14:54Speaker 2: my gosh. It was because it was right here in
- 14:56Speaker 2: the corner of the of the of the end zone. Okay,
- 14:59Speaker 2: so it was up close to person. We're going to
- 15:00Speaker 2: talk about that. We're going to talk about what a
- 15:02Speaker 2: Landon Roberts might bring to the team. We're going to
- 15:04Speaker 2: talk about how this is a little bit more of
- 15:06Speaker 2: a prep week for the Jets. It doesn't just go
- 15:09Speaker 2: out there next to what we're doing, not worry about
- 15:11Speaker 2: anybody else, although that's obviously a big part of football.
- 15:14Speaker 2: So we have some things to certainly discuss. Is Training
- 15:17Speaker 2: camp breaks up today, a day earlier than expected here
- 15:21Speaker 2: at Saint Vincent College and Latrobe. You're in the locker
- 15:23Speaker 2: room here on the Steelers Audio Network.

- 16:29Speaker 2: wa care if you're walking along the side of the road,
- 16:31Speaker 2: be careful.
- 16:31Speaker 3: It was the last second scrambled too, so so we
- 16:33Speaker 3: didn't get the full pole position lineup because all the
- 16:37Speaker 3: moving trucks are over there. Kind of they're scrambling to
- 16:40Speaker 3: get stuff donecause they got to get down to the
- 16:41Speaker 3: southid because they still got a practice right on Wednesday,
- 16:44Speaker 3: So we got to get all the stuff loaded up here,
- 16:45Speaker 3: get it down to the south side.
- 16:46Speaker 2: I think you're doing a walkthrough today. I think you're
- 16:49Speaker 2: doing a walk through today in a practice tomorrow. I believe.
- 16:52Speaker 2: I know they're off tomorrow. The uh off off tomorrow?
- 16:56Speaker 2: And what is practice? It day's Monday. Oh yeah, I'm sorry,
- 16:59Speaker 2: I'm sorry. I did the same walk through tuesday, full
- 17:02Speaker 2: practice wedding zeries. It the other way around. They're off
- 17:05Speaker 2: tomorrow and Wednesdays to practice. Okay, all right, thank you.
- 17:09Speaker 3: I got confused to I thought today was Tuesday to
- 17:12Speaker 3: so yeah, now today's Monday.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Uh yeah.
- 17:15Speaker 3: They'll be off tomorrow and then Wednesday they will do practice.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Thursday will be the pre the pre Saturday style practice pregame,
- 17:23Speaker 3: and then play Friday.
- 17:24Speaker 2: So little camp scuffle yesterday. So let me ask you
- 17:28Speaker 2: a question. Yes, when you are so, you know, you
- 17:31Speaker 2: always hear, well, these guys are getting tired of hitting
- 17:33Speaker 2: each other. They want to they want to go for
- 17:35Speaker 2: real and and you know you're tired and you get
- 17:37Speaker 2: a little ornery when you got into camp scuffle. Did
- 17:40Speaker 2: you get in a couple of camp scuffles? I don't
- 17:43Speaker 2: know what you're talking about, Okay, So would it be
- 17:47Speaker 2: and and I can only think of two real categories.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Something that built over the course of camp. I don't
- 17:55Speaker 2: like what he's doing. He did it again. You tell
- 17:58Speaker 2: him to stop, he says something, and it builds and
- 18:01Speaker 2: then pretty soon you gotta go right, yes, is that
- 18:04Speaker 2: a pretty good scenario?
- 18:05Speaker 3: So that that that is the that is the ant
- 18:08Speaker 3: hill approach, okay, right, leave it alone, just keeps building
- 18:12Speaker 3: building buildings, you know, I don't exterminate it, and you
- 18:15Speaker 3: get the anhill approach.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Okay.
- 18:17Speaker 3: And sometimes it's just you do the wrong thing at
- 18:20Speaker 3: the wrong moment, and it's a snap judgment reaction. You
- 18:23Speaker 3: black out for a couple of seconds. They're like, wh
- 18:26Speaker 3: w what are we doing?
- 18:27Speaker 2: So what what do you think is the more common?
- 18:32Speaker 2: Oh the more the more common is the blackout, not
- 18:34Speaker 2: the ant hill. Now the ant hill if they were hitting.
- 18:38Speaker 3: More like it's a cumulative trauma effect with the ant hill, right,
- 18:42Speaker 3: you know. And I'm sure you could probably get some
- 18:44Speaker 3: I'm sure I can go down there and find an
- 18:46Speaker 3: excuse if I was practicing to get pissed off over
- 18:49Speaker 3: time at somebody. But you know, the ant hill is like, man,
- 18:53Speaker 3: we've been hitting, you're starting to read the plays and
- 18:56Speaker 3: we're trying to get work out here, but you're cheating
- 18:58Speaker 3: the system and you're doing it consiststly. That's the ant Hills,
- 19:01Speaker 3: a build up. I'll never forget. We were in season.
- 19:06Speaker 3: We were in season on the south side. This was
- 19:10Speaker 3: my rookie year, and there have been some scuffles, like
- 19:15Speaker 3: like Hoky Bro was always in the middle of the scruff.
- 19:18Speaker 3: I know, everybody sees the nice, you know, slimmer, very
- 19:23Speaker 3: clean shaven face, very put together, very proper talking Chris
- 19:27Speaker 3: Hokey that they see on the television game day broadcasts
- 19:30Speaker 3: for his for the station. He's on Hokey Bro down
- 19:34Speaker 3: here in Trent, absolute ahole.
- 19:37Speaker 2: I mean, he was never quit.
- 19:40Speaker 3: A little extra stuff, a little extra shove at the end,
- 19:43Speaker 3: a little extra pursuit, just doing stuff. And this was
- 19:49Speaker 3: the longest, this is the biggest an hill because Keethrick
- 19:51Speaker 3: Vincent had been pissed like all camp and we did
- 19:55Speaker 3: it with Chris, with Hoch, with Hokey in general. And
- 19:59Speaker 3: we got to enough fights on the goal line and
- 20:04Speaker 3: at one on one pass rush and everything else.
- 20:06Speaker 2: But Keidrick and Hoki never fought.
- 20:09Speaker 3: It was just yelling mad at each other and everything.
- 20:11Speaker 3: And we're we're on the south side and we're doing
- 20:14Speaker 3: inside run drill and so first team starts because Kedrick
- 20:19Speaker 3: starts starting right guard because Kendall was out that year.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Keydrick and Hoky we go through and they're carded plays
- 20:25Speaker 3: for the defense. Right they put the cards up. Showsn't
- 20:27Speaker 3: where they're supposed to do what they're supposed to do, right,
- 20:30Speaker 3: So we make a play call and run the play
- 20:35Speaker 3: and Hoky like cut Keydrick off, like this is like
- 20:40Speaker 3: it wasn't the full like like pad clapping moment, like
- 20:44Speaker 3: this is more of what kind of look they do
- 20:46Speaker 3: out here, right, it's more thud tempo. I'm trying to
- 20:48Speaker 3: get my reads, I'm trying to hit my landmarks, and
- 20:51Speaker 3: Hoki just blows the play up. Coward gets pissed. BC's
- 20:55Speaker 3: like rolling again, you.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Know as a mattic Keydrick not at Hoky.
- 21:02Speaker 3: He's yeah, he's mad, he's mad. He's mad the play
- 21:05Speaker 3: didn't work. He's not yelling at anybody specifically.
- 21:08Speaker 2: But Keydrick knows why.
- 21:10Speaker 3: So now he's pissed at Hoky and so and we're
- 21:14Speaker 3: running the same exact place. So the one thing you
- 21:16Speaker 3: don't do, Cardinals sit against our defense back of the day,
- 21:18Speaker 3: run the same play twice because they are inevitably going
- 21:22Speaker 3: to jump the play. It's gonna happen, So go to play.
- 21:28Speaker 3: You hear chirping between Keydrick and Hoki. I'm sitting right
- 21:31Speaker 3: behind coach Kauer on the offensive side.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Play called debt.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Play gets called boom, Hoky knife' the a gap like shoot,
- 21:43Speaker 3: he's gonna get a hand on him. Hoky is in
- 21:45Speaker 3: the backfield, double tapping the running back right as he
- 21:48Speaker 3: gets the ball. Play is gun. Keydrick just comes marching over,
- 21:54Speaker 3: grabs Hokey by the face mask. Womb womb boom.
- 21:59Speaker 2: That's it. It was a coach Cowers.
- 22:04Speaker 3: I can't use the exact english, and I'll let you
- 22:06Speaker 3: feel it yourself. He was, hey, ooh dang, like it
- 22:13Speaker 3: happened that fast, like Coach Cower couldn't even react to
- 22:15Speaker 3: break it up.
- 22:16Speaker 2: And it was done.
- 22:18Speaker 3: And that was the ant Hill getting obliterated because he
- 22:22Speaker 3: had been saving as his training camp and all his
- 22:24Speaker 3: emotions and we're just all like in pause, like what
- 22:27Speaker 3: just happened here?
- 22:29Speaker 2: It was crazy? So those things do happen.
- 22:31Speaker 3: But the blackout like hey you grabbed my face mask,
- 22:34Speaker 3: Hey you shoved me, you held me, spun me around,
- 22:37Speaker 3: threw me off late or tried to knock me over
- 22:39Speaker 3: the pile.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Those are more blackout, quick one hitters. So a landon
- 22:44Speaker 2: Roberts yesterday was quick, blackout, one hitter quick. But because
- 22:49Speaker 2: you just got here, there's no answer.
- 22:53Speaker 3: But a landing is measured that he's going to do
- 22:58Speaker 3: it and he time he gets a chance to.
- 23:01Speaker 2: So he's one of the guys.
- 23:03Speaker 3: He doesn't need an ant hill because he's like he's like,
- 23:05Speaker 3: he's like, he's like, my house is built underneath the ground.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Yeah, he's just a wait to come out.
- 23:10Speaker 3: I could pop up here, I could pop up over there. Well,
- 23:13Speaker 3: you say, he's just wired that way to be that type.
- 23:16Speaker 3: He's that type of physical leader where he's going to
- 23:19Speaker 3: get the temperature up if things are lagging, he's gonna
- 23:22Speaker 3: he's gonna be a catalyst. He's going to be a
- 23:23Speaker 3: difference maker. And I love it. I love it because
- 23:25Speaker 3: I think that's you need that guy. You've got to
- 23:28Speaker 3: have that guy. I had that guy. And Joey porter
- 23:32Speaker 3: Pease was that and he was pleasy, was even more
- 23:34Speaker 3: vocal than the land of is right, And then James
- 23:37Speaker 3: was that guy.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Clark was that guy, you know, and then Foot was
- 23:40Speaker 2: that guy.
- 23:41Speaker 3: We had those different guys and then Hines is just
- 23:44Speaker 3: is just gonna smile at you, but he's he's he's
- 23:46Speaker 3: going to be giving you the fifth. Allen was that
- 23:49Speaker 3: kind of guy, you know, And I think when you
- 23:51Speaker 3: have all those kind of guys that just brings the
- 23:54Speaker 3: team together. It shows that it brings out the competitive juices,
- 23:58Speaker 3: even without having to tell somebody, I need you to
- 24:00Speaker 3: be more competitive.
- 24:01Speaker 2: You see that situation, it triggers you.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Good batter and different is gonna trigger you, and it's
- 24:05Speaker 3: gonna get everybody else involved.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Yeah, the kind of guy you want on your team,
- 24:10Speaker 2: although not necessarily the guy you went to practice against.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Maybe not the whole practice, right, not the whole practice,
- 24:15Speaker 3: but you need.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Him because you want to see what some guys are like.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Like I remember Forget when he hit fields a couple
- 24:20Speaker 3: of years ago in practice and he said, I just
- 24:23Speaker 3: want to see how the young offensive line were because
- 24:25Speaker 3: we have you know, we took three linemen of Troy, Troy,
- 24:28Speaker 3: Zach and Mason and they came there in a hurry. Yeah,
- 24:32Speaker 3: the Krunk Brothers came really fast. They looked like the
- 24:35Speaker 3: Bushwhackers and they came out of old w W F.
- 24:37Speaker 2: With they announced that they I was here for that
- 24:42Speaker 2: one last year. I remember that one, and yes, that's
- 24:44Speaker 2: exactly what happened. They arrived in a hurry. And that's good, Right,
- 24:48Speaker 2: that's what you want. You don't want your young guys
- 24:51Speaker 2: to be intimidated. You want you don't want your young
- 24:54Speaker 2: guys being worried. You want your young guys protecting their quarterback. Yeah,
- 24:57Speaker 2: you want to see what what are you made of? Like,
- 24:59Speaker 2: what are you gonna do? That was two years ago,
- 25:01Speaker 2: by the way, Yeah, it's crazy to think, right, Yes, yeah,
- 25:03Speaker 2: that was two years ago, not last year.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Yeah, two years ago because because he played for Patrick
- 25:07Speaker 3: Graham last year for the Oakland.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Raids, right, and because oh god, I said Oakland Raiders
- 25:12Speaker 2: guys Aaron Rodgers this year? Yes, yes, correct, it was
- 25:15Speaker 2: not justin field. Yeah, he was in game one. The
- 25:19Speaker 2: other one was at the Giants. And we'll get to
- 25:21Speaker 2: the Jets in a little bit. But uh yeah, so
- 25:23Speaker 2: so can he that can help that element that Now,
- 25:27Speaker 2: first of all, he's got to make the team, right
- 25:29Speaker 2: he does. But you have to imagine, I mean, you
- 25:33Speaker 2: bring the guy this late who already knows Patrick Graham's defense. Yeah,
- 25:38Speaker 2: but you know, so I'm and there was no injury.
- 25:41Speaker 2: I'm right. I'm of two minds when you see a
- 25:43Speaker 2: Ray Shawn Jenkins or an a Land and Roberts come here,
- 25:46Speaker 2: veteran guys who've got a really good resume, and the
- 25:52Speaker 2: first mind is, wow, it's great. They wouldn't assigned here.
- 25:56Speaker 2: They didn't have a chance to really good chance to
- 25:58Speaker 2: make the roster. The second bit is why did anybody
- 26:01Speaker 2: else sign him? I think that's a fair question. It's
- 26:04Speaker 2: a fair question. Yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 3: I think familiarity at this point when you're an older
- 26:08Speaker 3: guy matters for a lot of those intents and purposes,
- 26:12Speaker 3: because a lot of teams have the young guys that
- 26:14Speaker 3: they're trying to figure out if they're going to be in,
- 26:16Speaker 3: and a lot of teams don't want to risk getting
- 26:20Speaker 3: the guaranteed salary for the year with a veteran of
- 26:23Speaker 3: that age, so they wait till week two and bring
- 26:25Speaker 3: a guy.
- 26:26Speaker 2: In, right.
- 26:27Speaker 3: So that's another reason they're playing that game right now.
- 26:30Speaker 3: It's the leverage and guaranteed versus non guaranteed money game.
- 26:34Speaker 2: You know, one of the things as unless you are
- 26:37Speaker 2: just a fan who I guess writes down every player
- 26:43Speaker 2: in the NFL I think a lot of us don't
- 26:46Speaker 2: don't even know when those guys are available at the
- 26:48Speaker 2: week two pickups hap and you're like, oh, I didn't
- 26:51Speaker 2: feel that I was still out there. Surely somebody was
- 26:53Speaker 2: employing him. And those guys can usually have a I
- 26:56Speaker 2: mean it varies. Some of them have a good effect
- 26:58Speaker 2: in the team, some don't. But you know, for the team,
- 27:01Speaker 2: like you said, you're not then quote unquote stuck with
- 27:03Speaker 2: that contract when you sign them earlier and they make
- 27:05Speaker 2: your roster out of camp. Yeah, you're not stuck with it.
- 27:09Speaker 2: You can't.
- 27:09Speaker 3: It's more easy to move that guy up and down
- 27:12Speaker 3: the roster where you sign in week two because it's
- 27:15Speaker 3: technically you're like on a week to week basis, so
- 27:18Speaker 3: you can cut, re sign on waivers, elevate on Saturday,
- 27:22Speaker 3: play on Sunday, cut, You can do all that up
- 27:25Speaker 3: and down that you want, and gives you additional flexibility
- 27:28Speaker 3: when they're not under guaranteed Paragraph five salary after week
- 27:33Speaker 3: one because if you're on the roster week one going
- 27:35Speaker 3: into the game, complete the game, you're on the FIG
- 27:36Speaker 3: three menter roster as a veteran invested of over three
- 27:39Speaker 3: plus years.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Salary is guaranteed for the year. Do you know again,
- 27:44Speaker 2: this is another one of those player things, like I
- 27:47Speaker 2: think that the NFL can can humble a lot of guys,
- 27:52Speaker 2: a lot of guys, you know, you think about you know,
- 27:56Speaker 2: most players who were in the NFL were absolute superstars
- 28:01Speaker 2: in high school, just nobody could touch. Then they were
- 28:05Speaker 2: stars in college. They were the best players in their team.
- 28:08Speaker 2: They're getting an attention. Now they get to the NFL.
- 28:10Speaker 2: We've gone from superstar to star, and now they understand
- 28:13Speaker 2: there's a fighting component to get on the field. What
- 28:15Speaker 2: do you mean special teams. I haven't done special teams
- 28:18Speaker 2: since pee wee. You know, I mean, you know, so
- 28:20Speaker 2: special one. Yes, So, I mean there's all of these.
- 28:26Speaker 2: And then, like you said, you're around the Steelers players
- 28:28Speaker 2: and so maybe if you're not an historian and you
- 28:31Speaker 2: begin to understand how hard the game is, maybe in
- 28:34Speaker 2: year two or three you look up and you're like,
- 28:36Speaker 2: whoa man, these guys are. Guys have bronze bus, these
- 28:38Speaker 2: guys won super Bowls. I understand now how hard it is.
- 28:42Speaker 2: It's got to be humbling for a for a player
- 28:44Speaker 2: to have carved out a solid NFL career for themselves
- 28:49Speaker 2: and be fighting to be active on a Saturday, right
- 28:53Speaker 2: to be to signy. We're looking at Odell Beckham's trying
- 28:56Speaker 2: to make a team. Yeah, you're trying to make a team.
- 28:59Speaker 2: You know, you're Odell Beckham.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Yeah, you're obj right, you're supposed to be You're supposed
- 29:03Speaker 3: to be able to supposed to be able to make
- 29:04Speaker 3: a team walking in. But no, I mean it is
- 29:07Speaker 3: a very top You're talking about the top half percent
- 29:13Speaker 3: of football players that ever played the game. Amaze at
- 29:16Speaker 3: the pro level right that. And then when you sit
- 29:19Speaker 3: back and look and I think we're right at maybe
- 29:23Speaker 3: one hundred plus year history of this of this league.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Ten thousand people on this earth at one time or
- 29:30Speaker 3: another played professional football.
- 29:32Speaker 2: That's it. In a century. It's wild, wild to think
- 29:37Speaker 2: about how it is.
- 29:38Speaker 3: And I think, guys, when you're going through the process,
- 29:40Speaker 3: and you're you're going through, you don't really look back
- 29:44Speaker 3: and see those type of things, right because your eyes
- 29:47Speaker 3: are always for you got the blinders on right like
- 29:49Speaker 3: a plow horse, and you're just like, no, no, this
- 29:52Speaker 3: is me and I expect to be this and dah
- 29:54Speaker 3: da da da, But you don't look at your left
- 29:55Speaker 3: right realize, man, what started is a ten thousand person
- 30:00Speaker 3: and race. You know, our hundreds of thousands from high school,
- 30:04Speaker 3: you know, turned into thousands by the time you got
- 30:06Speaker 3: to college, turns down to a couple of hundred by
- 30:09Speaker 3: the time you get to the pros. And then after that,
- 30:12Speaker 3: half of that's already gone after your first year, if
- 30:15Speaker 3: you do even make it in the pros. Right, So
- 30:18Speaker 3: you're talking about only about eighty or so guys a
- 30:21Speaker 3: year that are rookies that actually make it beyond year one.
- 30:26Speaker 2: That's incredible. And you know, I think that for a player,
- 30:30Speaker 2: most players, maybe at the end of their career, if
- 30:34Speaker 2: they've had a good, long career, get a different perspective
- 30:38Speaker 2: maybe when something happens too throughout the course of their career.
- 30:41Speaker 2: And again I'm painting with a very broad brush. There
- 30:44Speaker 2: are probably rookies that have a great perspective on what
- 30:47Speaker 2: this all means, but they're probably most rookies don't because
- 30:50Speaker 2: you have to have the blinders on. Yeah, my own
- 30:53Speaker 2: personal name for it is a swirl, right. They're they're
- 30:55Speaker 2: in there in a pocket and things are swirling around
- 30:58Speaker 2: in that pocket, but they're still in a pocket. They're
- 31:00Speaker 2: moving through life in a pocket and everybody else is
- 31:03Speaker 2: outside of that pocket until one day you're no longer playing,
- 31:08Speaker 2: which for ninety nine percent of the people who are
- 31:11Speaker 2: no longer playing, it's because nobody wants you to play.
- 31:14Speaker 2: It's the rare person like Aaron Rodgers after this year,
- 31:17Speaker 2: who can say I don't want to play anymore. I'm finished.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Most of almost everybody who no longer plays professional sports
- 31:25Speaker 2: plays because they're not good enough. That's it their career.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Nobody wants them and show stuff. Yeah, and then you
- 31:31Speaker 2: have to hear that and think about that, and then
- 31:33Speaker 2: suddenly your perspective and your life changes, and you have
- 31:36Speaker 2: to learn how to rent your own car and you know,
- 31:38Speaker 2: create your own get out, you know, get your own
- 31:40Speaker 2: plane tickets, and figure out a lot of things in
- 31:42Speaker 2: life you never had to figure out. And so you
- 31:44Speaker 2: gain that perspective. But I do think I do wonder
- 31:46Speaker 2: if these guys that you know, all of a sudden,
- 31:48Speaker 2: now you're a week two guy and you're you're on
- 31:50Speaker 2: and off the rosters, and you know, you're thinking about
- 31:52Speaker 2: the contracts maybe you've signed in the past, and it's
- 31:54Speaker 2: a it's a different perspective on life.
- 31:56Speaker 3: Yes, it's a sobering as a sobering effect and you
- 31:59Speaker 3: can take and kind of take stock you. Obviously you
- 32:01Speaker 3: don't full review because you still got a future in
- 32:04Speaker 3: front of you if you're competing for a job, but
- 32:06Speaker 3: you do say, dang, I made it a far away
- 32:10Speaker 3: right and you won't fully appreciate it till you are done.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Is that is that when you fully appreciate it.
- 32:16Speaker 3: Yeah, well, after the depression and getting mourning the death
- 32:22Speaker 3: of that part of me, because it is it is
- 32:26Speaker 3: a death, and you do go through a grief process.
- 32:28Speaker 3: I mean, I'm not going to sit here and lie,
- 32:30Speaker 3: but I think you know, we're now in a society
- 32:33Speaker 3: where you can talk.
- 32:33Speaker 2: About mental health more openly. But it is a tough blow.
- 32:37Speaker 2: It is a tough blow to.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Lose that identity of yourself and to want it but
- 32:49Speaker 3: not be able to be wanted. It is a very
- 32:53Speaker 3: big thing when you haven't been told no ah lot
- 32:55Speaker 3: in your life. Professionally, you've always been good enough, You've
- 33:00Speaker 3: always been you know, asked to do things, and then
- 33:05Speaker 3: that literally shuts off and it's a different world that
- 33:08Speaker 3: you're exposed to, and you hear the questions, man, you
- 33:13Speaker 3: look like you still play in your head.
- 33:15Speaker 4: You're like darn right, I wish I was still playing,
- 33:18Speaker 4: wish they would employ me the first couple of years,
- 33:21Speaker 4: you know, And I remember like going and watching games,
- 33:24Speaker 4: sitting at the sports bar, you know, and watching all
- 33:26Speaker 4: of that, and just like, man, I used to be
- 33:29Speaker 4: that guy.
- 33:31Speaker 3: But it's also it's a part of life. You have
- 33:33Speaker 3: to go through that as you change careers, you pivot
- 33:36Speaker 3: in life. You have to understand, man, I got to
- 33:38Speaker 3: do something that not a lot of people in this
- 33:40Speaker 3: world got to do, to do it for the length
- 33:42Speaker 3: of time that I did, I need to be thankful
- 33:44Speaker 3: for the opportunity, not regretting what I didn't do right,
- 33:47Speaker 3: because I can't change other people's opinions about me. I
- 33:51Speaker 3: could only be the best person I can be in
- 33:53Speaker 3: that moment. And and just to circle back to the trope,
- 33:56Speaker 3: I think most people that I talked to who are
- 34:00Speaker 3: former athletes. Of course I work with a lot of
- 34:02Speaker 3: former athletes, I think a lot of a lot of
- 34:05Speaker 3: what has missed. I mean, certainly the game, and I
- 34:09Speaker 3: think probably the adulation.
- 34:11Speaker 2: There are things that are missed. But I think I
- 34:13Speaker 2: think a lot of guys would just say that camaraderie,
- 34:15Speaker 2: that feeling of being part of the team is the
- 34:19Speaker 2: first show in the locker room. Yeah, that's what That's
- 34:23Speaker 2: what players missed the most. Yeah, yep, that's what they
- 34:25Speaker 2: missed the most. Yep. Okay, We're going to take a
- 34:27Speaker 2: break as we wrap things up in the trope from
- 34:30Speaker 2: various different angles and begin to look forward to the
- 34:32Speaker 2: game against the Jets. A lot going on with the
- 34:35Speaker 2: team and they're gonna be game planning, So what does
- 34:37Speaker 2: that look like. We're going to be talking about that,
- 34:40Speaker 2: among other things. We continue in the locker room. Here
- 34:42Speaker 2: on the steel there's Audio Network.

- 35:27Speaker 2: And the conversation continues here from Saint Vincent. Our conversation
- 35:32Speaker 2: never stops. No, we were what have we hit it there?
- 35:34Speaker 2: What we commercial break doesn't matter? Talked about Yeah, it's
- 35:38Speaker 2: it is a difficult transition for the players. And then
- 35:40Speaker 2: we moved somehow we pivoted from that to the new Reachers.
- 35:43Speaker 3: Well, we were talking about television series and would you
- 35:46Speaker 3: rewatch a television.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Oh you okay, So let's okay, here's let's rewind here.
- 35:53Speaker 2: So we're talking about, you know, when a when a
- 35:55Speaker 2: player's career is over. And I'm glad you brought up
- 35:59Speaker 2: the whole mental health thing cause I think it's really true.
- 36:01Speaker 2: So it was like the analogy I was using during
- 36:03Speaker 2: your break was like, you know, you're on the north
- 36:06Speaker 2: side of the wall, John Starks lowering the gate behind you.
- 36:08Speaker 2: You're on the other side of the wall and Game
- 36:10Speaker 2: of Thrones, and like you said, it's you and the
- 36:12Speaker 2: Wildlings and that's it, and the White Walkers and everybody,
- 36:14Speaker 2: all your friends are on the other side of that
- 36:17Speaker 2: one hundred and fifty foot high wall, and you might
- 36:19Speaker 2: as well, in some ways not even exist. And so
- 36:22Speaker 2: you have to rethink your identity and all I mean again,
- 36:25Speaker 2: I don't want to get too deep here, but it's
- 36:27Speaker 2: it's it's emotionally tough for players, and I'm glad you
- 36:31Speaker 2: brought up that point. And then I asked you if
- 36:33Speaker 2: you ever rewatched series. I would like to rewatch Game
- 36:37Speaker 2: of Thrones. Yes, I've never done. I started to do
- 36:40Speaker 2: it and then I stopped. Same with Justified, maybe my
- 36:43Speaker 2: favorite show of all time. I started to watch and
- 36:45Speaker 2: then stopped, and then and then we started. Then you
- 36:48Speaker 2: said you just did that with the Reacher. Yeah, I
- 36:50Speaker 2: just did. Reach.
- 36:50Speaker 3: I watched a little bit of last season to get
- 36:52Speaker 3: ready for this season, and I'm always like that, Like
- 36:54Speaker 3: I won't go back to season one necessarily, but I
- 36:56Speaker 3: will go back a couple of episodes just to get
- 36:58Speaker 3: myself re in data as I'm watching the current season
- 37:02Speaker 3: or something. Walking Dad's probably the only one I think
- 37:04Speaker 3: that I went back from the beginning and watched.
- 37:08Speaker 2: So I've had a couple of a couple of shows
- 37:15Speaker 2: with my wife, well, she was watching mad Men. So
- 37:19Speaker 2: most of my most of my adult life, I've worked nights,
- 37:24Speaker 2: and for most of that time, a lot of that
- 37:26Speaker 2: time TV shows weren't available to stream. You either watched it,
- 37:30Speaker 2: or you didn't. So people say, did you see the
- 37:33Speaker 2: new Ver? Did you see the new Seinfeld? No? I
- 37:36Speaker 2: was working. You know, the Penguins had a game or
- 37:37Speaker 2: whatever exactly, you know the Pirates had a game. No,
- 37:40Speaker 2: I didn't see that. So I missed a lot of tea.
- 37:43Speaker 2: So now I'm going back these shows that you can stream,
- 37:45Speaker 2: I'm going back and catch and watching some of them.
- 37:48Speaker 2: So this is not uncommon. My wife was She's like, hey,
- 37:53Speaker 2: she showed U and so she loved mad Men. But
- 37:55Speaker 2: again that was that was when I was still working
- 37:58Speaker 2: a lot of nights and and so you know, she said, hey,
- 38:02Speaker 2: you want to watch the show Suits? And uh, I said, okay.
- 38:06Speaker 2: So I watched the first episode and I was I'm like,
- 38:09Speaker 2: let me think about that. Do I want to watch
- 38:10Speaker 2: that again? Or And then about a week later, I
- 38:13Speaker 2: was like, yeah, I'll watch episode two, said Rob. I'm
- 38:17Speaker 2: halfway through season two, so now I'm done. Yeah, missed it.
- 38:23Speaker 2: But what was the show your suit? What was the
- 38:24Speaker 2: show you're just talking about?
- 38:26Speaker 3: Uh?
- 38:27Speaker 2: What I said? Yeah? I said walking Dead? Walking Dead?
- 38:30Speaker 2: So I never my family was way down the Walking
- 38:35Speaker 2: Dead road, and I tried to watch a little bit.
- 38:38Speaker 2: I saw a little bit of Daryl and Carroll and
- 38:40Speaker 2: yeah and all the other stuff and Carroll.
- 38:42Speaker 3: Uh.
- 38:43Speaker 2: But but I so, I I think I had a
- 38:45Speaker 2: little bit of an idea of what was going on.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Heines Ward was an extra in one I happened. I
- 38:50Speaker 2: happened to see that one. I happen to see that lot.
- 38:53Speaker 2: I was home, I was home, my family was watched.
- 38:55Speaker 2: I'm like, wait a minute, that's Heines Warren and so
- 38:57Speaker 2: we're you out it and and it was it was
- 38:58Speaker 2: Heines word as a zombie. Yeah, it was off because
- 39:01Speaker 2: they were filming in Atlanta. Yeah.
- 39:03Speaker 3: So, and Hines lives in Atlanta in the off season,
- 39:05Speaker 3: so he you know, he's a popular character.
- 39:07Speaker 2: So he got in it. But but I got And
- 39:10Speaker 2: here's the funny thing. I liked it so much. I
- 39:11Speaker 2: used to read the graphic novels.
- 39:13Speaker 3: So I read the first one hundred and fifty episodes
- 39:16Speaker 3: before Walking Down even became a show. Ah, so I
- 39:19Speaker 3: was already hooked. And I and then you start reading
- 39:22Speaker 3: the graphic novels and you're doing it. Was I mean,
- 39:24Speaker 3: just like you do a Game of Thrones, right, Song
- 39:26Speaker 3: of Ice and Fire?
- 39:26Speaker 2: Yeah you would, you would.
- 39:27Speaker 3: You're like, oh, dude, I've been reading this, yes, and
- 39:30Speaker 3: now there's a movie or a show depiction of what
- 39:34Speaker 3: I'm what I've read and doesn't match up, does it not?
- 39:37Speaker 2: Obviously?
- 39:38Speaker 3: I mean Harry Potter, similar type of adaptations where you
- 39:42Speaker 3: could see it and understand it from that perspective. But yeah,
- 39:46Speaker 3: so Walking Day was the only one I actually went
- 39:47Speaker 3: back to the beginning, watched it again and watch like
- 39:50Speaker 3: the first three seasons just because I enjoyed it that much,
- 39:53Speaker 3: and it was like one of those nostalgic moments. And
- 39:55Speaker 3: I have some other shows that I would probably do,
- 39:57Speaker 3: just haven't done, like X I was a huge X
- 39:59Speaker 3: Files fan.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Wife loved X Files. I have I number of those,
- 40:03Speaker 2: but E three DVD I really had. I have the
- 40:05Speaker 2: whole box set, twenty four. I was a big fan
- 40:07Speaker 2: of twenty Oh love twenty four. You got me late
- 40:09Speaker 2: on twenty four. I thought that was it. That's one
- 40:11Speaker 2: of my all time favorites. But we got talking about
- 40:13Speaker 2: this because Reacher was shot in Pittsburgh.
- 40:17Speaker 3: Yeah, the movie Reacher, the movie Reacher with the Tom Cruise,
- 40:20Speaker 3: Tom Cruise, right, yea, which I think.
- 40:22Speaker 2: You did two of them, but the first one was
- 40:23Speaker 2: shot in Pitts. The first one was shot in Pittsburgh.
- 40:25Speaker 2: I don't remember the second one. Yeah, I don't remember either,
- 40:29Speaker 2: but it was clearly Pittsburgh. But I was downtown along
- 40:32Speaker 2: the river Walk and stuff like that, so you.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Had a chance going through the tunnels, like there was
- 40:36Speaker 3: a racing in the tunnels and yeah, and then sitting
- 40:38Speaker 3: there ri Ip Pizza Parma, who used to be on
- 40:41Speaker 3: the corner of Ninth and Ah where he did the
- 40:44Speaker 3: bust of where he got out the car. The car
- 40:45Speaker 3: kept rolling and he sat up on the bus stop.
- 40:47Speaker 3: I got on the bus and when the opposite direction
- 40:49Speaker 3: when they were trying to chase him.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Yeah, literally at the corner where I used to live. See.
- 40:53Speaker 2: I love when the movie that they they made with
- 40:59Speaker 2: I was Will Smith The Doctor Kimra the Concussion Concussion. Yeah,
- 41:04Speaker 2: that was film that was filmed here. You could see
- 41:07Speaker 2: little parts of my Ah, that's I know where that
- 41:09Speaker 2: neighborhood is, Vinces was done here Fnceshen. Oh my god,
- 41:14Speaker 2: that was I thought that was the best picture of
- 41:16Speaker 2: the year shot. I thought that was unbelievable. Perks of
- 41:21Speaker 2: being a wallflower. Yeah, a movie I really enjoy that
- 41:24Speaker 2: was shot a lot. It's fun to see the Burg
- 41:27Speaker 2: Wonder Boys shot at Pittsburgh's that that's it's fun to
- 41:30Speaker 2: see what Yeah, I can't. Oh man, it's like out
- 41:37Speaker 2: of the furnace or no, no, no, no, that's it.
- 41:39Speaker 2: That's it. That's a book. I know exactly what you mean.
- 41:42Speaker 2: He's a he's a he's a steel worker though. Yeah,
- 41:44Speaker 2: he's a steel worker. Yeah. And of course sudden death.
- 41:48Speaker 2: Of course Jean Claude Vandam his finest. So I I
- 41:54Speaker 2: watched that movie because it was brought to my attention.
- 41:58Speaker 2: So I watched that movie before Jay Cawfield became my
- 42:05Speaker 2: my my host for the Penguins games, and I was like, oh,
- 42:09Speaker 2: he was menacing that movie, that movie. And then it
- 42:13Speaker 2: was hard for me to look at uh at the
- 42:16Speaker 2: Penguin mascot again the same way because he had his
- 42:18Speaker 2: ear sowt off and he was like shooting people. Looks
- 42:20Speaker 2: up and like, whoa man, that's so uh. Anyway, so
- 42:24Speaker 2: we we've we've come far, Afield Max.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Uh.
- 42:28Speaker 2: We had a point. We had there was a point
- 42:30Speaker 2: in there somewhere. Okay, so let's get to the point,
- 42:33Speaker 2: which is the New York Jets. Uh, just quickly before
- 42:36Speaker 2: we get into uh breaking down the Jets a little
- 42:39Speaker 2: bit and looking forward to the game and what the
- 42:41Speaker 2: Steelers are gonna do and what we expect out of
- 42:43Speaker 2: the Steelers. Is it a little different? Is it a
- 42:46Speaker 2: little bit of a mini game plan? Because Mike McCarthy
- 42:49Speaker 2: talked about still installing his last install. His eighth install
- 42:53Speaker 2: was yesterday during practice. Now you lose a day of
- 42:56Speaker 2: practice today, but you're trying to get something of a
- 43:00Speaker 2: game plan, right, So I'm assuming that means more of
- 43:03Speaker 2: the regulars will probably play a little health baring health
- 43:08Speaker 2: a little bit deeper into the game. Is it a
- 43:11Speaker 2: mini game plan? Usually in your experience in the past,
- 43:15Speaker 2: there's no time for a full blown game plan. Is
- 43:17Speaker 2: there for going against the Jet ri Is it a
- 43:19Speaker 2: full blown think?
- 43:21Speaker 3: I think you have the ability because you've installed everything. Okay,
- 43:23Speaker 3: you have the ability to, but I think you do
- 43:26Speaker 3: try and do more sophisticated things. It's not the full right,
- 43:31Speaker 3: I'm giving you a three safety weird type of blitz.
- 43:35Speaker 2: You know.
- 43:35Speaker 3: I'm not doing overloads or any of that type of stuff.
- 43:37Speaker 3: Defensively and offensively. I'm not running multiple motions to get
- 43:40Speaker 3: into like these intricate kind of RPO complex system plays
- 43:44Speaker 3: they're not doing that, but they will scheme for what
- 43:49Speaker 3: their defense and offense does base wise and will combat
- 43:55Speaker 3: what they've shown on film already, So that will be
- 43:57Speaker 3: more of a game plan.
- 43:58Speaker 2: Yeah, and you have to do some of that stuff right, Max,
- 44:01Speaker 2: because if people talk about keeping it vanilla, but you've
- 44:04Speaker 2: got to do a little bit of what you do.
- 44:06Speaker 3: Listen, Coaches talk before these games. Okay, news flash, they communicate.
- 44:13Speaker 3: Guess what Matt Lafleur talk to talk to Mike McCarthy
- 44:17Speaker 3: when he got the job in Green Bay. You don't
- 44:19Speaker 3: think they didn't talk after that when he was a
- 44:22Speaker 3: consultant last year and now coming into this. Just like
- 44:25Speaker 3: you would do for joint practices, coaches talk, Hey, what
- 44:28Speaker 3: are we trying to get accounts?
- 44:29Speaker 2: What do you need to get done? What do I
- 44:30Speaker 2: need to get done?
- 44:31Speaker 3: Let's see what can we do to make this beneficial
- 44:33Speaker 3: to both of us. Same thing in the preseason game. Hey,
- 44:37Speaker 3: I would love to get into a two minute dro Hey,
- 44:39Speaker 3: I would love to do a little bit more eleven
- 44:42Speaker 3: personnel versus twelve personnel. First half is going to be eleven. Second,
- 44:46Speaker 3: it's going to be twelve. Your guys, are you needing
- 44:49Speaker 3: base and sub stuff. I need the same thing. Let's
- 44:52Speaker 3: try and make it work right, And it's not like,
- 44:56Speaker 3: oh my god, it's a trade secret. I'm not speaking
- 44:57Speaker 3: to you and I'm just trying to win the game
- 44:59Speaker 3: because the game doesn't count, right. I need to see
- 45:02Speaker 3: tangible things I can use to grade on whether I
- 45:05Speaker 3: keep a guy or whether I cut a guy. And
- 45:07Speaker 3: I need data points so that they talk about that. Hey,
- 45:11Speaker 3: how long do you think your starters are going? Here's
- 45:12Speaker 3: how long I want to do my starters. Okay, how
- 45:14Speaker 3: are we gonna match this? Okay? They have a rough
- 45:17Speaker 3: game plan. They're not giving each other their playbook, but
- 45:20Speaker 3: they're talking about situations that they want to see, Situations
- 45:22Speaker 3: they'd like to create. Can you give me something here?
- 45:25Speaker 3: If I line up in this personnel, can you do
- 45:28Speaker 3: something off of this? Show me what it looks like
- 45:30Speaker 3: if you're gonna overload one side, Show me what it
- 45:32Speaker 3: looks like just to run a basic twist. My guys
- 45:35Speaker 3: need to see it because I got to evaluate there.
- 45:38Speaker 3: They're gonna help each other out in those perspectives.
- 45:40Speaker 2: You know, I saw one of the and I'm not
- 45:41Speaker 2: gonna name the coaches back when we were doing high
- 45:44Speaker 2: school football. Wolf and I were doing the play by
- 45:46Speaker 2: play together and we Craig McConnell, who's now over Katie
- 45:50Speaker 2: k was the was the guy coordinating that did an
- 45:52Speaker 2: incredible job of our high school coverage. You know, I
- 45:55Speaker 2: had coaches miked up and all the other things. Well
- 45:56Speaker 2: we had we had two veteran coaches and one team's
- 46:01Speaker 2: one coach's team was not having a very good year
- 46:03Speaker 2: and they were getting beaten badly. At halftime, he went
- 46:07Speaker 2: over to the other coach and said, listen, I gotta
- 46:10Speaker 2: play my first teamers for just a couple of series
- 46:13Speaker 2: at the beginning of the second half. In other words,
- 46:15Speaker 2: I'm not trying to fight my way back in against
- 46:18Speaker 2: your second team guys. I'm just letting you know what
- 46:20Speaker 2: I'm trying to do. You do what you want to do,
- 46:22Speaker 2: But I got to get my guys some more time,
- 46:24Speaker 2: because if you don't have that communication. Now, the coach
- 46:27Speaker 2: on the other side going, what's he doing? Man, I
- 46:29Speaker 2: got my second team in there, and he's you know,
- 46:31Speaker 2: my kids could get hurt or a lot of different
- 46:34Speaker 2: things could happen. So I just thought I remember seeing that,
- 46:37Speaker 2: and I was like, that is you know, it's not
- 46:39Speaker 2: the coach that's leading going to the other coaches. The
- 46:42Speaker 2: coach is trailing saying this is what I'm gonna do.
- 46:45Speaker 2: You react accordingly, But I'm not you know, this isn't me,
- 46:48Speaker 2: you know, trying to hurt anybody. I just got to
- 46:51Speaker 2: get my guys some more work. They you know, they
- 46:53Speaker 2: get so. Yeah, the fact that these kind of communications
- 46:57Speaker 2: happen around the sport it really kind of cool. It
- 47:00Speaker 2: is cool.
- 47:00Speaker 3: And also, at the end of the day, everybody's trying
- 47:03Speaker 3: to get a good evaluation on their guys. And at
- 47:05Speaker 3: the end of the day, that's what it's because you're
- 47:07Speaker 3: trying to figure out how am I going to plan
- 47:09Speaker 3: my team?
- 47:10Speaker 2: How am I going to.
- 47:11Speaker 3: Get this group of guys ready for a season? And
- 47:17Speaker 3: you're doing the same evaluation process that I'm doing. So
- 47:20Speaker 3: how can we help each other in this? This isn't
- 47:23Speaker 3: like it's not you're going to the Bengals or the
- 47:26Speaker 3: Ravens or the Browns and asking for this right trade
- 47:29Speaker 3: secret division.
- 47:30Speaker 2: We're not gonna We're not going to see the Green
- 47:33Speaker 2: Bay Packers. They played all these teams last year. Yeah,
- 47:36Speaker 2: like last year.
- 47:39Speaker 3: So it's like, let's try and help each other out.
- 47:42Speaker 3: And we've done joints with teams, So I mean, you know,
- 47:45Speaker 3: it's like there's there's a bigger issue at play when
- 47:48Speaker 3: it starts account then okay, all bets are off right
- 47:50Speaker 3: Week one, Atlanta Falcons.
- 47:51Speaker 2: I'm not talking to you about what my personnel groupings are, right,
- 47:55Speaker 2: But if.
- 47:55Speaker 3: I'm talking to Green Bay, if I'm talking and for
- 47:58Speaker 3: Mike McCarthy, you have a relationship with him out side
- 48:00Speaker 3: of us just playing against each other, right, right, So
- 48:04Speaker 3: I think that's where you kind of go and say,
- 48:06Speaker 3: all right, we can do this. This is something that
- 48:08Speaker 3: we're going to work on, and we have a good communication,
- 48:12Speaker 3: good claim, physical game. Nobody cares what scores at the
- 48:14Speaker 3: end of the day. But did I get enough good
