- 0:07The New York Yankees faced the Cleveland Indians at Cleveland Stadium for a Sunday afternoon game on May 25, 1958.
- 0:14The Yankees were off to a brisk start in 1958, entering this game with a 24-6 record.
- 0:19They were managed by Casey Stengel and had been to the World Series in the previous three seasons, having lost to the Braves in 1957.
- 0:26The Indians went to the World Series in 1954 under the momentum of their historic 111-win season, but manager Al Lopez left Cleveland two years later to lead the White Sox.
- 0:36The Indians then fell below 500 in 1957 for the first time in 11 years.
- 0:40They then decided to give the managerial reins to Bobby Bragan for the 1958 season.
- 0:45Bragan was recruited away from Pittsburgh, where he managed under Branch Rickey, his long-term protege dating back to his playing days in Brooklyn.
- 0:52This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Phil Rizzotto and Mel Allen.
- 1:22This is the Atlantic dealer for Atlantic Imperial Gasoline.
- 1:27For Cleveland, Ray Narleski out there on the hill.
- 1:32Leading off are the New York Yankees, Harry Simpson coming out of the Yankee dugout, Yogi Berra moving into the on-deck circle, and shortstop Tony Kuback will bat third.
- 1:44Stadium.
- 1:50Ray Narleski has won five and lost three. Through the years, he's been one of the mainstays of the Cleveland Indians Relief Corps, but he has had to be pressed into service as a starter.
- 2:00When such pitches as Bob Lemon came up with a bad arm, Herb Score was injured, and Bob Lemon was put on the disabled list. Lemon was just put back on the active list yesterday.
- 2:12Bob has been working out, and he's ready to go.
- 2:15And now, as we get ready to go here in the top of the first inning, Harry Simpson stepping up, leading off for the New York Yankees.
- 2:24Simpson batting an even 200. Been up just 15 times with three base hits, one triple, one run batted in.
- 2:33Harry's right wrist just starting to get strong again. He had it broken in spring training.
- 2:38Ray Narleski checks the sign from Dick Brown. Here's the windup, and the first pitch is strike one over the outside corner, and the ball game's underway.
- 2:48And it looks like we're going to have a real good crowd here today. Coaching at third, Frank Crisetti down at first base, Ralph Houch.
- 2:58Narleski ready. The pitch to Simpson has occurred low, ball one, one-on-one.
- 3:05The municipal stadium in Cleveland, Ohio.
- 3:12One of the biggest fields in the big leagues. Of course, you can't say the biggest anymore because Los Angeles Coliseum is bigger.
- 3:20There's a foul back on a play strike two, high on the upper deck.
- 3:24One ball, two strikes to count on Harry Simpson.
- 3:39This park is so tremendous, they had to put a temporary fence running from left field all the way over to right field to make it possible to hit a few more home runs.
- 3:46We'll give you the dimensions in just a moment. One ball, two strikes to count on Harry Simpson.
- 3:52Narleski checking the sign from Dick Brown.
- 3:58Here's the windup, and the slow curve is hit over the mound. Shortstop, Billy Harrell coming in up with it.
- 4:03Fires to first, and it's one away.
- 4:08Harry Simpson bounces out short to first, and the batter will be Yogi Berra.
- 4:22And the fans greet Yogi with mixed emotions. Yogi has always had real good days here at Cleveland.
- 4:30He's really worn out this Cleveland pitching staff, when it was at its best, too.
- 4:33Yogi's batting 218, just starting to shake the slump he's been in most of the year. He has four doubles, four homers, 13 runs batted in.
- 4:40First pitch is strike one on the inside corner.
- 4:44Down the left field and right field lines at 320 feet.
- 4:48And in left center and right center is 365, and dead center, 410.
- 4:55The pitch to Yogi is outside, ball one, one-on-one.
- 4:59There have been some tremendous home runs hit in this park. I remember one Johnny Lindell hit deep into the bleachers, which is 465 feet away in left center field.
- 5:08And one Luke Easter hit here in the upper deck in right center field. Must have gone about 500 feet.
- 5:13The one-one pitch to Yogi is outside, low ball two, two and one.
- 5:18On deck, Tony Kubek.
- 5:21This has always been one of the best kept-up fields in the big leagues.
- 5:26Their ground crew is terrific, just like they are at Yankee Stadium.
- 5:30Keeps the field immaculate, the infield free of as many pebbles as they can.
- 5:36The infielders love to play here at Municipal Stadium. Very few bad hops.
- 5:40Here's the two-one pitch, a ground foul wide at first.
- 5:46And almost all the ballparks now have installed these ball boys sitting down the right field and left field line, and it speeds up the game.
- 5:54As they can chase the foul ball, and keep the outfielders in their position.
- 5:59For Cleveland, they have Mnoso on left, Marathons center, Carlavito in right.
- 6:04Harris-Gillett third, Harrell is short, Avila is second, Ward at first, Brown catching. Now let's keep pitching.
- 6:09The foul is just over our heads.
- 6:12And the count holds at two and two.
- 6:16We're going to get them an ace. Be ready.
- 6:22Two balls, two strikes to count on Yogi Berra.
- 6:25One man out here on the top of the first, no score in the ball game.
- 6:36Narleski, full right-hander ready.
- 6:40The pitch to Yogi is another foul, just to our left and out of play.
- 6:48Wayne Narleski is six feet, one inches tall, 175 pounds. Born in Camden, New Jersey, now lives in Palmer Heights, Ohio.
- 6:56Last year he won 111 and lost five.
- 6:59Had a 2.94 earned run average.
- 7:03And has always been one of the Indian's most effective pitches.
- 7:06Here's the two-two pitch.
- 7:08Brown balls.
- 7:10Shorts up, Billy Harrell up with it.
- 7:12By at the first. Not in time. Yogi falls as he crosses first base.
- 7:17He fell heavily to the ground, but he gets up now. Ralph Houch gets him up.
- 7:21Yogi with that long, last lunge at first base, tripped over the bag.
- 7:26And Billy Harrell, at shortstop, took a little bit too much time getting rid of that ball.
- 7:31He had it in plenty of time.
- 7:33And took a couple of extra steps, and that's what enabled Yogi to beat it out for an infield single.
- 7:42Here's the first hit of the ball game, and it brings up Tony Kubek.
- 7:47Tony batting 323, four double-six runs batted in.
- 7:54Preston Ward holding first base against Farah. The first pitch is inside, ball one.
- 7:59On deck, Mickey Mantle.
- 8:07Yankee dug out on the third base side. Cleveland over on the first base side.
- 8:17The stretch by Nalewski. The pitch is a high fly to straightaway center field.
- 8:20Roger Maris with the glasses down under it and takes it for out number two.
- 8:28Two away, and here comes Mickey Mantle.
- 8:45Mickey batting 306. Eight doubles, four home as 14 runs batted in.
- 8:52Mantle has still not hit his stride.
- 8:56Last year, Nalewski won twice over the Yankees and didn't lose at all.
- 9:02He has a 4-1 lifetime record against the Yankees.
- 9:05And is one of the few American League pitchers with a winning mark against the Bronx Bombers.
- 9:09The first pitch to Mantle, strike one, swing and a miss.
- 9:26Yogi Berle leading off first base. Preston Ward playing in back of Yogi now with two away.
- 9:31Top of the first, no score on the ball game.
- 9:34The pitch to Mantle is another swing and a miss, strike two.
- 9:40Nalewski put a little extra on that fastball and was up around Mickey's letters.
- 9:45On deck, Gail McDougall.
- 9:56Nothing into the count on Mantle.
- 10:02The pitch, a little bit low, ball one, one ball and two strikes.
- 10:21Brian Oleski, cleaning off the mound a little bit, habit that most pitchers have,
- 10:26kicking the dirt around from one spot to another.
- 10:30Just a little nervous habit. One ball, two strikes on Mantle, two away.
- 10:33Here's the stretch. The pitch is a ground ball at second base.
- 10:37Ward cuts in front, takes it, throws to Oleski, covering, he's safe at first.
- 10:46Preston Ward, cut in front of Bobby Avila, took the ball back in and had it tossed to Oleski,
- 10:51covering and Mickey Mantle beat the play. It's a base hit for Mickey.
- 10:55Another infield single for Mickey Mantle.
- 11:00Sends Yogi Berra down to second base and with two away, the batter Gail McDougall.
- 11:10McDougall batting 369. Six doubles, five homers and 17 runs batted in.
- 11:22That was a tough play as Ward had to cut to his right backhand of the ball
- 11:25and had to throw back across his body to Oleski.
- 11:29He grabbed it with one hand and reached for the bag, but Mickey was across first.
- 11:33Berra at second, Mantle at first, two away.
- 11:36The stretch, the pitch to McDougall is a curve, a low, ball one.
- 11:41On deck, Jerry Lumpy.
- 11:55Here's the stretch. Pitch is fouled at the plate, strike one, one, one.
- 12:02And here at Municipal Stadium, the photographers also are allowed to be on the field,
- 12:07like they are in Detroit.
- 12:11And they are right close to the plate and it's a very dangerous spot.
- 12:14Any fouled ball that hits sharply off the bat, they'd never have a chance of getting out of the way.
- 12:20We've seen a lot of cameras ruined out here.
- 12:24The pitch to McDougall is nine, ball two, two and one.
- 12:36Two balls, one strike, two men out.
- 12:38We're in the top of the first inning of this first game of a double head-up.
- 12:41No score in the ball game.
- 12:48Now, that's the stretch. The pitch to McDougall is high, ball three, three and one.
- 12:54Three balls and one strike.
- 13:01And this has been a familiar pattern in the last nine or ten games with Baron Mantle on base and McDougall at bat.
- 13:14One moment please.
- 13:33We're experiencing technical difficulty along the home of Champions Network.
- 13:38The Yankees and the Cleveland Indians out of Municipal Stadium in Cleveland.
- 13:42As soon as the technical difficulty is cleared up, we will rejoin the Yankees and the Indians in Cleveland.
- 14:12The Yankees and the Indians out of Municipal Stadium in Cleveland.
- 14:36Well, our technical difficulty seems to be cleared up, so we'll rejoin the Yankees and the Indians out in Cleveland.
- 15:02The first batter for the Cleveland Indians will be Billy Harrell, the shortstop, and he'll be facing Whitey Ford.
- 15:10Whitey has won four and lost two this year with an earned run average of 1.75.
- 15:14Whitey's lifetime record against Cleveland, he's won 11 and lost seven.
- 15:27Harrell last year was with San Diego and Cleveland, most of the year with San Diego.
- 15:31Harrell's pitch is a curve. It hits Harrell on the right foot.
- 15:37And he's hit by a pitch ball. Yogi Farah is claiming that the ball didn't hit him.
- 15:43And Harrell is hit by a pitch ball.
- 15:48And on that play, played on fire Ed Hurley did not even ask to see if the ball had any shoe polish on it.
- 15:56He would show positive that the ball hit Harrell on the foot, and he's right on the play.
- 16:04Harrell, 6'1.5, 180 down at first base. The batter, Bobby Avila.
- 16:09Harrell was batting 239, still is. Here's Avila batting 282.
- 16:13The first pitch is a fly ball right field.
- 16:16Nelson Howard over near the line takes it for out number one.
- 16:20That's Bobby Avila trying to go to the opposite field. One away.
- 16:33And here's Minimanoto.
- 16:36Although he's been a great favorite around the leagues, at Chicago he was the darling of the White Sox fans.
- 16:42Here at Cleveland he's won them over already.
- 16:44Minis batting 263, two doubles, six homers, 19 runs batted in.
- 16:52Whitey Ford into a stretch position. The pitch to Minoso is strike one, a fair ball on the outside corner.
- 16:58Minis by 10, 175 pounds.
- 17:02Born in Montanjas, Cuba. Lives in Mariano, Cuba.
- 17:07Last year batted 310 with 12 homers and 103 runs batted in.
- 17:15Mark Throneberry holding first base against Billy Harrell.
- 17:20Here's the stretch.
- 17:23Another curve high outside, ball one, one-on-one. Yankees line up with Harry Simpson in left, Mickey Mantle in center, Elston Howard in right.
- 17:31Jerry Lumpy at third, Tony Kubek at short, Gil McYogle at second, Mark Throneberry at first.
- 17:36Yogi Berkacchi, Whitey Ford on the mound in a stretch position.
- 17:41One-one pitch is a curve outside, ball two, two and one.
- 17:45On deck, Preston Rores.
- 17:49Curve ball is set on the ground in short step. Kubek to McYogle for one, back to first.
- 18:08Not in time, not in time.
- 18:11The throw beat Minosso to the bag, but Throneberry had to come off the bag to get the low throw by McYogle, so it goes to the fourth play.
- 18:20From six to four, a racing Billy Harrell starting in a second, but Minosso's safe at first.
- 18:27And with two out, here's Preston Moore at the first base.
- 18:34Ward is off to a real fine start.
- 18:38He's batting 371, two doubles, two homers, nine runs batted in.
- 18:51Here's a stretch by Whitey Ford.
- 18:55Minosso leads off first.
- 18:57The pitched award is a fly ball, Kubek going back at short stop, flips the glasses back under it, takes it for out number three.
- 19:05Well, the Indians in the last to the first.
- 19:08No runs, no hits, no Yankees.
- 19:10There is one man left to score at the end of one full inning of play.
- 19:15The Yankees nothing and the Indians nothing.
- 19:18That's springtime without long drives in the country, trips to the seashore, family picnics, vacations, and all the pleasures you get from your car.
- 19:26Well, there have been some days this spring that didn't look exactly like spring weather.
- 19:30We're hoping for better days and they should come along, especially as we move on toward the summer season.
- 19:35And with increased driving ahead, your car is in for some mighty tough going, especially where the tires are concerned.

- 20:27In the scoreboard, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, post-Paul Grahame, San Francisco, and Pittsburgh, two games.
- 20:32We'll get to the others in a moment.
- 20:34Nelson Howard leading off, batting 343, still.
- 20:38The triple-two home is eight runs batted in.
- 20:45Now let's get ready. The right-hander's first pitch to Howard is outside ball one.
- 20:55Howard stands deep in the batter's box, a right-hand batter, close stance.
- 21:00Pitch is hit deep down the left-field line.
- 21:02Minosso going over, and the ball is just fouled.
- 21:06It was far enough for a home run and bounced into the left-field seat that hit the top of the world.
- 21:10And bounced into the left-field seat, I'd say fouled by about five or six feet.
- 21:16And even though he didn't even move from his left-field spot, he knew he had no chance to get that ball.
- 21:21And his best shot was a caram off the wall, if it did hit the wall.
- 21:27One strike and a long one on Nelson Howard.
- 21:35Now let's get ready.
- 21:37One-one pitch is a little bit outside ball two, two and one.
- 21:44On Jack Marv Throneberry.
- 21:53Here's a two-one pitch to Howard.
- 21:55Curveball popped in the air foul and back of the play.
- 21:57Dick Brown coming over and Preston Ward.
- 22:00And Dick Brown makes the grab as he presses lightly against the front of the wall in front of the box seat
- 22:07just to the right of the Indian dugout.
- 22:09Nice play by Dick Brown.
- 22:11Always a tough play when you're chasing a foul ball near the stands.
- 22:18And here's Marv Throneberry.
- 22:21The first baseman for the New York Yankees batting 227.
- 22:26Throneberry has three doubles, two home as four runs batted in.
- 22:33The first pitch is a change-up hit down the right-field line and foul.
- 22:39Slow curve that Throneberry got out in front of but hit the ball well.
- 22:43And he's been having a little bit of trouble with that slow step.
- 22:52One strike to count on Marv Throneberry.
- 22:59Right-hander ready kicks delivers a fastball swing and a miss strike two.
- 23:09Nothing in two to count on Marv Throneberry.
- 23:13On deck, Harry Simpson with whitey Ford due to hit next.
- 23:16Whitey resting in the dugout.
- 23:18Here's a pitch high, ball one.
- 23:20One ball, two strikes.
- 23:36One ball, two strikes, one out.
- 23:38Marv Throneberry has been playing first base since the moose Bill Scowron was injured at Yankee Stadium.
- 23:43Happy to hear Scowron coming along very well.
- 23:47Here's the pitch, a swing and a foul back.
- 23:51Out holds a one ball and two strikes.
- 24:12Ahead Hurley to play on pirates with some more baseballs and the attendant runs out with him.
- 24:20Now we're ready to go.
- 24:21Marv Throneberry steps back in the batter's box.
- 24:25Drain Oleski into his wind-up.
- 24:27The slow curve is fouled just to our right.
- 24:30Nice play by Hal Ebowitz.
- 24:32Perfect catch right at him.
- 24:36He's got big enough hands to catch him, I'll tell you that.
- 24:47Puts it in his pocket and Hal's got a nice souvenir.
- 24:50Getting a lot of foul balls hit back here today.
- 24:53Here's the pitch, a foul back against the screen.
- 24:56Count holds a one ball and two strikes.
- 25:04Quite a few of the writers have a wire screen in front of them because there are times when they're bending down writing something
- 25:13and if a foul ball's ever hit, you could really get creamed.
- 25:23Now let's get ready again.
- 25:27Here's the one ball, two strike pitch to Throneberry swinging a missed strike three.
- 25:34First strikeout for Drain Oleski.
- 25:36Two away here in the top of the second, no score in the battle, Whitey fourth.
- 25:44Whitey batting 125, two for 16, he has one double.
- 26:00Here's the wind-up, the first pitch to Whitey is high outside ball one.
- 26:05Frank Crocetti coaching at third, Ralph Hough down at first.
- 26:13The one-upting pitch is strike one, a fastball right down the middle, Whitey taking all the way.
- 26:32Here's the one-one pitch, a foul just to our left.
- 26:37Strike two, one ball and two strikes.
- 26:47And again, Ed Hurley needs some new baseball.
- 26:49There have been an awful lot of foul balls this early in the ball game.
- 27:01Oleski now steps back off the mound, opening up that new baseball, close to the rosin bag.
- 27:18Two men out here in the top of the second, nobody on.
- 27:21One ball, two strikes to count on, Whitey fourth.
- 27:25Here's the wind-up, the pitch is strike three, swinging on a high fastball.
- 27:31Strikeout number two for Ray Noleski for the Yankees in the top of the second, no runs, no hits.
- 27:36No Indian errors and nobody left on base, the score at the end of an inning and a half.
- 27:40The Yankees nothing and the Indians nothing.
- 27:43No doubt about it, is there, fans, when you're on the go exploring the open highway,
- 27:47you like that card about a thousand in the smooth power department.
- 27:51So here's a good suggestion, fill up with Atlantic Imperial gasoline.

- 28:18From the highway ahead of you or near your home, a place of business.
- 28:21Just look for the friendly Atlantic sign, it's an automatic invitation to try the world's finest petroleum product.
- 28:27Drop by and meet up with the fellow who keeps your car on the go.
- 28:31San Francisco at Pittsburgh in the first game, Gomez for the Giants, Schmitz catching,
- 28:36Vernon Law on the slab for the Pirates, Travis the backstop.
- 28:39The end of three innings, it's tied 1-1.
- 28:42Warm up features, starting for St. Louis, Brosnan recently traded from the Cubs.
- 28:46For Cincinnati, it'll be Robbie.
- 28:48St. Louis, Cincinnati a doubleheader.
- 28:50In Chicago, Milwaukee two games today.
- 28:52Boston, Chicago against the White Sox a doubleheader.
- 28:55Washington, Detroit a twin bill.
- 28:56It's a doubleheader here at Cleveland at a single game, Baltimore, Kansas City.
- 29:00Right now, bottom of the second inning, Nick Brown the catcher, Carascal and Colabito.
- 29:05Bill?
- 29:06The first pitch is outside ball one.
- 29:13Nick Brown was with Cleveland, Omaha and Mobile last year.
- 29:23The slow curve is high for ball two.
- 29:26With Omaha, he batted 261 in 46 games.
- 29:32In 34 games with the Indians, he batted 263.
- 29:36And in 40 games for Mobile, he batted 312.
- 29:41First ball is a swing and a miss, strike one.
- 29:43Two balls and one strike.
- 29:5224 years old from Shinston, West Virginia.
- 29:58The 2-1 pitch is a curveball popped in the air back of the mound.
- 30:02Gil McDougal right there under it and takes it for out number one.
- 30:06As Whitey Ford hits young Dick Brown on the fist with a curveball.
- 30:11And here's Chico Carascal.
- 30:15Chico has been switched to third base as manager Bobby Bregan feels that Billy Harrow can cover a little more ground than Carascal is short.
- 30:25Chico is batting 238, four doubles, two homers, 17 runs batted.
- 30:29And there's a high foul over by the Indian dugout, Throneberry chasing it and makes the grab.
- 30:35Makes the grab.
- 30:37Shining away from the wall, he backhanded the ball for out number two.
- 30:43Shining away and the bat of Rocky Colavito.
- 30:56Colavito batting 253, has four doubles, two homers, 12 runs batted.
- 31:00And Rocky got off to a real good start.
- 31:03Was up there leading the league for a while, then got into a slump.
- 31:06The first ball is in there, strike one call.
- 31:10A boy named Rocco Colavito born in the Bronx, now lives in Temple, Pennsylvania.
- 31:15He's 6'3", 190 pounds.
- 31:19The first ball is in there, strike two.
- 31:21Nothing is true on Rocky.
- 31:25Rocky has tried to model his style of play with that of the great Joe DiMaggio.
- 31:32And as a matter of fact, he resembles Joe spatially and in his build.
- 31:38The third ball is a swing and a miss, strike three.
- 31:42And so, all the Indians in the last of the second, no runs, no hits, no Yankees,
- 31:49there's nobody left to score at the end of two full innings.
- 31:53The Yankees nothing and the Indians nothing.
- 31:57It's up to the data and up to the minute.
- 31:59So it's up to you fans, fill her up today with Atlantic Imperial gasoline.
- 32:03Your car's power, a mate for 58.
- 32:06And as we told you, this is our first look at the season at the revamped Cleveland Indians
- 32:10who have been the surprise of the league so far.
- 32:13The Yanks and Indians were rained out of a three game set at the stadium earlier this month.
- 32:18So you'll have your first look at such prominent newcomers as Mudcat Grant, Carol Hardy,
- 32:23Gary Geiger and others next month.
- 32:25And veteran Bob Lemon and Speedy Herb's score are expected back in action by then too.
- 32:29So you'll be seeing Bobby Breger's new club near full strength.
- 32:33The Indians, always a popular attraction in New York, will be stadium visitors the first weekend of June.
- 32:39The Yanks and Tribes hang under the lights on Friday, June the 6th.
- 32:43A ladies day game on Saturday, June 7th.
- 32:46And a make-up doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, June the 8th.
- 32:49For best choice of seats, we suggest you get your tickets as quickly as possible.
- 32:54The Stadium Advance Ticket Office will be open for your convenience this afternoon until 5 p.m.
- 33:01We'll have you people out driving, stop in and let's pause for station identification.
- 33:07Remember your dollars at $14.60, WOKO, first in Albany, New York.
- 33:14The Troy Buick Roundup follows this game.
- 33:17Here's Harry Simpson up for his second time.
- 33:25He bounced out short to first in the first inning.
- 33:27The curve is a little bit high, ball one.
- 33:32Yogi Beron-Dek.
- 33:40Best ball is ball two, a little bit high. Simpson started off with that pitch and just did hold up.
- 33:59Two balls, no strikes on Harry Simpson.
- 34:05Perfect day for baseball here at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland.
- 34:09The curve is inside, ball three, three and nothing.
- 34:14And Nalewski is behind the first batter here in the top of the third.
- 34:17Harry Simpson, three balls and no strikes.
- 34:26Nalewski checks the sign from Dick Brown.
- 34:29Here's the windup and the three-nothing pitch is low outside, ball four, he lost them.
- 34:34He's got four pitches, Nalewski walks his second man and here's Yogi Beron.
- 34:39He'll beat out an infield single in the first inning.
- 34:46And then as he beats a throw to first base, he tripped and fell heavily on the ground.
- 34:53But he's all right.
- 34:56A little embarrassed, but feeling all right.
- 34:59Preston Ward holding first base against Harry Simpson.
- 35:04The Indian infield and outfield shifted around towards right.
- 35:07Here's the first pitch to Yogi, strike one as Yogi squared around to bunt, took the pitch.
- 35:12Chico Taraskela, third, is playing in front of the bag near the edge of the infield grass.
- 35:18Billy Harrell at shortstop, two steps close to second base.
- 35:21Avila in the hole between first and second.
- 35:24And Ward holding the bag against Harry Simpson.
- 35:26Here's the stretch, Simpson leads away.
- 35:30The pitch is a fly ball to short right field.
- 35:33Avila back, Colabito in, Colabito called for it, takes it for out number one.
- 35:41One away as Yogi pops through Colabito and short right and here's Tony Kuback,
- 35:44who flies to center field in the first inning.
- 35:57The Yankee player sitting on the edge of the bench, soaking up some of the sunshine.
- 36:02And we've really had real fine weather so far on this Western trip.
- 36:09Here's the stretch by Naliski.
- 36:11The pitch to Kuback is bunted down to third base line, a good one, that's going to be a base hit.
- 36:15No throw at all, a beautiful punt by Tony Kuback.
- 36:23He caught, Taraskela flat-footed and Taraskela came in, picked the ball up, did not even throw the ball.
- 36:29That's how perfect a bunt it was.
- 36:32And now the Yankees have runners at first and second.
- 36:34Kuback at first, Simpson at second, one away.
- 36:37And Mickey Mantle will beat out an infield single in the first inning to run his consecutive game hitting streak to 13 in a row.
- 36:48Mick's not satisfied with the way he's hitting, even though he's hitting over 300.
- 36:52He says he's getting too many of these leg hits.
- 36:54He wants to hit them where they don't have to run.
- 36:56The first pitch is a low foul ball down the left field line, but curving into the seats.
- 37:00And out of play.
- 37:06As a matter of fact, that ball just went on the playing field, not in fair territory.
- 37:14And Manoso now looking over at the spot.
- 37:16He either had a long run, I doubt if he could have got to the ball.
- 37:19He plays Mickey a little over and lets set up.
- 37:21But it fell in among the ground crew who were sitting just where the lower grandstand ends.
- 37:27Here's the pitch to Mickey outside ball one, one-on-one.
- 37:31And there is a low fence in front of the ground crew, which the ball landed in back of.
- 37:41And so the wind, very little wind today, but when it gets above the stadium there is some wind blowing as we can see the flags.
- 37:51The curve ball is low inside, ball two, two and one.
- 37:55And Pappy Durkin just hands me the temperature and the wind velocity at 62 degrees and a 20 mile per hour wind.
- 38:03Now of course in this vast stadium we don't feel it.
- 38:06We are completely covered by the stands and the walls and back of us.
- 38:10But above the stadium the flags are flying and that foul ball when it got above the stadium was affected by the wind.
- 38:18Pitch to Mickey outside ball three, three and one.
- 38:26Three balls, one strike, one hour and the top of the third no score in the ball game.
- 38:30Harry Simpson is down at second base over at first.
- 38:32Tony Kubek, the batter Mickey Mantle and on deck Gail McDougal.
- 38:47Joe Ripley just got some information on that foul ball and I'll pass it along right after this pitch.
- 38:53As Naleksi steps off the rubber we can tell you now Joe said that it is a separate box and it is not in play.
- 38:59In other words the ball hit there is not in play even if you should catch it.
- 39:05The player cannot go in there to catch the ball.
- 39:07He can lean over the front as you do on any foul ball but you cannot go in in back of the seat.
- 39:11Okay Joe, thank you. Here's the stretch.
- 39:13The 3-1 pitch is a foul out of play this time definitely going back into the seats in the upper deck.
- 39:20Full count on Mantle now three and two and let's see how manager Casey Stengel works this whether he'll have the runners going on a 3-2 pitch with only one out or whether he'll be playing it safe.
- 39:36Frank Crisetti coaching at third gives some signs to Simpson and Kubek down at second and first.
- 39:42Ralph Popover at first base.
- 39:44Here's the stretch.
- 39:46They don't go the ball is swinging in the midst Frank Crisetti.
- 40:00Ray Naleksi comes through with a very important strike out but that time Casey Stengel's strategy did work.
- 40:06He did not have the runners going and Simpson would have been thrown out.
- 40:11Not definitely but he did not take a big lead at second base and had he been running with Mickey striking out it could have been a double play.
- 40:21So now it's two out. Naleksi has three strikeouts on the day so far and here's Gil McDougall who walked in the first inning.
- 40:34Naleksi stretches. Pitch to Gil is a swing and a foul back off the chest protector of plate umpire Ed Hurley.
- 40:41Ben Ricochet back and hit Dick Brown on the back of his head.
- 40:45Dick rubs his head gently.
- 40:48These foul balls are dangerous today.
- 40:55One strike on McDougall on deck Jerry Lumpy.
- 41:05Stretch by Naleksi. The pitch is inside as Gil started to step in and then had to really lean out of the way of that high inside fastball.
- 41:12One on one.
- 41:20Yankee bullpen and Cleveland bullpens are deep in left center field and right center field and back of the temporary fence.
- 41:26There's a curve outside ball two, two and one.
- 41:31And they have a car here at municipal stadium. They always have had.
- 41:36When a relief pitcher is due to come in the car goes and picks them up although the Yankees do not use it.
- 41:42The Cleveland Indian pitchers use it in right center field.
- 41:45Big cinder path runs all around the park.
- 41:48Pitch to Gil is high ball three, three and one.
- 41:52Naleksi thought he had that pitch.
- 41:55Little put out out there on the mound.
- 41:58Three balls one strike on McDougall. Two out top of the third no score.
- 42:03Yankees have runners at first and second.
- 42:16Elston leads off second. Kubek off first.
- 42:20Naleksi into a stretch position.
- 42:22Three one pitch is high ball four. He lost them.
- 42:26And the bases are loaded.
- 42:29Walk number three issued by Ray Naleksi.
- 42:32And here's Jerry Lumpy who bounced out with the bases loaded in the first inning, second to first.
- 42:45On deck Elston Howard.
- 42:53Simpson at third. Kubek at second. McDougall at first. Two away.
- 43:01First pitch to Lumpy. Is it swing and a line drive to left field.
- 43:04Minimanoto back under it. Takes it for half number three.
- 43:13And for the Yankees in the top of the third no runs one hit.
- 43:17No Indian errors and three men left on base.
- 43:20The score at the end of two and a half innings.
- 43:23The Yankees nothing and the Indians nothing.
- 43:26It's a big moment on an automobile assembly line when a high compression engine is mounted into the chassis.
- 43:32And when you see the size of that engine today you know it will need a lot of fuel power to keep the car on the go.
- 43:39Now that's exactly why Atlantic Refining has developed a super octane gasoline specially designed to power today's high compression cars.
- 43:48It's Atlantic Imperial by name.
- 43:50Atlantic Imperial gasoline provides that high compression engine with all the power it will ever need.
- 43:56Together they work in harmony smoothly and powerfully.
- 43:59Modern gasoline, modern car engine.
- 44:01And give you that power make travel. Acceleration without hesitation.
- 44:05And long, long mileage.
- 44:08Atlantic Imperial, the gasoline that provides this power made drive 58.
- 44:12See your Atlantic feeler. Remember, travel safely everywhere.
- 44:19Bottom of the third inning. First game of a Sunday double header.
- 44:22Cleveland Indians entertaining the New York Yankees.
- 44:26The Yankees are in the top of the third no runs.
- 44:32The game continues.
- 44:33The Yankees are hit next. Curved ball is fouled at the plate as he tries to check his swing.
- 44:38The ball just hit the end of his bat. One and one.
- 44:44Maris is 6 feet tall, 197 pounds from Hibbings, Minnesota. Now lives in Fargo, North Dakota.
- 44:51Last year about a 235.
- 44:53The sidearm fastball is a swing and a miss and the let go of the bat.
- 44:57And it hits a double hit. It hits Ed Hurley in the right hand and Yogi Berrin back of the head.
- 45:03Roger Maris let go of that bat. I've never quite seen that before.
- 45:07I've seen players let go of bats and they've sailed into the stands or into the clubhouse or into the dugout.
- 45:13But this one he let go of follow through.
- 45:17It came all the way back, hit Ed Hurley in his right hand, ricocheted off Yogi's head.
- 45:21Fortunately it hit Yogi in the head.
- 45:23If it hit him any other place he might have been hurt.
- 45:26It's a one ball two strike pitch outside ball two, two and two.
- 45:29I'm only kidding though.
- 45:32Yogi in his head.
- 45:35That's if his wife's listening and it hit Ed Hurley right on the forefinger of his right hand.
- 45:41Here's a two-two pitch. Curved ball low, full count, three and two.
- 45:49That's the strike finger hit that Joe.
- 45:51Now Roger Maris wants some rosin.
- 45:53Reminds me of Dominic DiMaggio who always let go of the bat, not always but more often than any other player.
- 46:00Dominic always carried a rosin bag in his back pocket.
- 46:04All right here's the payoff pitch to Maris.
- 46:06A foul down the left field line and out of play. Count holds it three and two.
- 46:12Different players use different methods of getting a good grip on that bat.
- 46:16Some of them use a little tar and rosin to make it sticky.
- 46:19Some of them use oil and rosin.
- 46:21That's what Joe D used to use, oil mixed with rosin.
- 46:24Side on fifth, well it's hit on one hop to shortstop Kovac.
- 46:27Nice play by Tony. Throw to first for out number one.
- 46:30A nice play by Tony Kovac who caught that ball on a short hop right against his stomach.
- 46:37He blocked the ball well and then threw to first for the out.
- 46:43One away and here's Ray Naleski.
- 46:48Head early showing his finger to Yogi Berrin and showing where it hit off his chest protector
- 46:52and bounced and hit Yogi up the back of his head.
- 47:00One man out here in the last of the third, no score.
- 47:03Nothing, nothing in the ball game.
- 47:04Naleski, right-hand hitter, takes a curve in there, strike one.
- 47:12Naleski is batting 0-59, he's one for 17.
- 47:19Another curve is hit slowly down to third.
- 47:21Jerry Lumpy on one big hop takes it.
- 47:23By at the first, that's out number two.
- 47:27Two away and a bat of Billy Harrell who was hit by a pitch ball on his right foot in the first inning.
- 47:33Now we'll hear from Norristown, Pennsylvania, now lives in Troy, New York.
- 47:52Right-hand hitter, first pitch by Yogi Ford is a curve, strike one on the outside corner.
- 47:58On deck, Bobby Avila.
- 48:11Eddie Stanky coaching at third, red crest down at first.
- 48:14Curve ball is strike two.
- 48:16He started to swing check it but he went far enough.
- 48:24Eddie the Brat Stanky down at third base.
- 48:31Here's a two-strike pitch to Harrell.
- 48:34Low ball, one, one ball, two strikes.
- 48:48Two out, nobody on here in the last of the third.
- 48:50Whitey Ford into the windup, fast ball is hit on the line into center field for a base hit.
- 48:59And that's the first base hit off Whitey Ford, a solid single at center field.
- 49:02That's Billy Harrell down at first base.
- 49:05And here's Bobby Avila who flied to right field in the first inning.
- 49:15Roberto Francisco Avila, born at Veracruz, Mexico.
- 49:28In 1954 led the American League in hitting with an average of 3.41 since then.
- 49:33He has not regained his batting eye.
- 49:36Right-hand batter wearing a golf glove on his left hand.
- 49:40Takes a curve high outside ball one.
- 49:43Lots of players have been doing that now wearing golf gloves on their right hand hitting their left hand,
- 49:49a left hand hitting their right hand.
- 49:52Keeps them from getting these big calluses and also if they have a tender hand absorbs some of the shock.
- 49:59Pitch to Bobby, the curve hits foul down the third base line, just foul.
- 50:04Little ball boy kicks the ball around a little bit down the left hairline.
- 50:08One ball, one strike.
- 50:09That's a big thrill for these youngsters to be ball boys at any big league park.
- 50:15They have a regular Cleveland uniform on.
- 50:18Sit on a little stool down the right field corner and left field corner.
- 50:23Here's the 1-1 pitch.
- 50:24Fastball hit.
- 50:26Foul, just foul.
- 50:28Oh man, that ball was fouled by a quarter of an inch.
- 50:33It actually hit the foul line about a foot in front of third base and just kicked to the left of the bag.
- 50:41Now a ball does not have to hit on the ground in back of third base to be a fair ball.
- 50:46If that ball had hit in fair territory and then just went over a corner of the bag and still landed in foul territory,
- 50:53it would have been a fair ball.
- 50:55But Joe Papparello, the third base umpire, standing right on the line, had perfect view of the ball,
- 51:00saw that the ball did not go over any part of the bag before it hit in foul territory.
- 51:04Called it right away.
- 51:07One ball, two strikes on Avella.
- 51:10Court stretches.
- 51:11Howell leads off first.
- 51:12There goes the runner.
- 51:13The pitch is swung and a missed strike.
- 51:14Three.
- 51:15And that howell can go down that line.
- 51:17It's a strikeout.
- 51:18Strikeout number two for Whitey Ford for the Indians in the last of the third.
- 51:22No runs.
- 51:23One hit.
- 51:24No Yankees errors.
- 51:25One man left.
- 51:26The score at the end of three full innings.
- 51:29The Yankees nothing and the Indians nothing.
- 51:33And let's take another look at the scoreboard.
- 51:35All the other games start later in the American League.
- 51:38Washington at Detroit a double header.
- 51:40Baltimore at Kansas City a single game.
- 51:42And Boston at Chicago a double header.
- 51:44They start just a little bit later on.
- 51:46In the National League, St. Louis at Cincinnati in the first of two, nothing, nothing at the end of one.
- 51:51Brosnan against Harabi.
- 51:56Chicago at Milwaukee a double header.
- 51:59The starting pitches in the first game, Phillips against Trowbridge.
- 52:03Trowbridge Phillips a former brave now with the Cubs.
- 52:10LA at Philadelphia have not started.
- 52:12And San Francisco at Pittsburgh at the end of four.
- 52:14Pittsburgh two to Giants one.
- 52:16Gomez against Lowe.
- 52:20Now we're ready to go here in the top of the fourth inning in this nothing, nothing ball game,
- 52:37a pitches duel between Ray Narleski and Whitey Ford.
- 52:41And for the Yankees, Elston Howard who popped to the catcher in the second inning leading off.
- 52:55First pitch to Howard is inside ball one.
- 53:09The fastball is fouled at the plate.
- 53:11Strike one, one ball one strike.
- 53:16Correction on the pronunciation of the pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds, it's Rabe.
- 53:20I said Robbie, it's spelled R-A-B-E pronounced Rabe.
- 53:26That was courtesy of Til Ferdinand of the Journal American.
- 53:30There's a foul in the upper deck.
- 53:35The Yankees didn't try to check his swing but the ball hit his back and just ricocheted back into the seats.
- 53:40One ball two strikes on Howard.
- 53:42On deck Mark Throneberry.
- 53:47The Yankees and the Indians here at Big Municipal Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio.
- 53:54Right off Lake Erie, the lake right in back of us.
- 53:57There's a curveball just outside ball two, two and two.
- 54:04One of the reasons this is such unusual weather, being so close to the lake at this time of the year we usually get real cold weather.
- 54:12But it is a beautiful day here at Municipal Stadium.
- 54:15Here's a two-two pitch.
- 54:17Another foul back.
- 54:20Now it holds at two and two.
- 54:26I wonder if they got any statistics for a record number of foul balls hit in one game.
- 54:31I doubt it why they'd want to keep it except the owners to see how many baseballs they lose.
- 54:38So far in three full innings we've had an awful amount.
- 54:44More than I've ever seen in such short time.
- 54:53Ray Norlesky ready now.
- 54:55The pitch to Howard is a grind ball, a high hop, a harrow coming in a short.
- 54:59Throws the first in time for the out.
- 55:01That was a nice play by Billy Harrell.
- 55:03It was a high Baltimore shot.
- 55:05Harrell had it come charging in and the dead run.
- 55:07Pick it up and fired a first.
- 55:08Just didn't hit.
- 55:10Elston Howard went away.
- 55:11Here's Mark Throneberry who struck out in the second inning.
- 55:28The slow curve is hit.
- 55:32Between first and second out to right field a base hit for Mark Throneberry.
- 55:35Rocky Colavito up with the ball.
- 55:38And Throneberry is on with a single.
- 55:44And that's hit number four for the Yankees, Orton Norlesky.
- 56:07He went away with Mark Throneberry at first base and the battle Whitey Ford.
- 56:14And now they're looking into the Yankee dugout as Casey Stengel jumped up in the top step and hollered something.
- 56:24Casey Stengel is pointing down to first base.
- 56:29The Indian infield on the alert for a possible sacrifice attempt.
- 56:33Whitey takes a pitch on the outside corner strike when he is squared around and is owed a bunt.
- 56:43And they're taking something that was, perhaps Houch had, it could be Harry Simpson's glasses.
- 56:51That's just what it is.
- 56:52Simpson when he gets on base gives his glasses to Houch and he forgot to retrieve them the last time after he had gone out to the outfield.
- 57:01So Harry doesn't want to go up there at a disadvantage.
- 57:03He sees better with the glasses and you've got to take all the breaks you can get.
- 57:07All right the runner leaves away at first.
- 57:09Whitey swings at the ball and sends a base hit between third and short.
- 57:13Throneberry holds his second and Whitey's safe at first on a crossed up base hit.
- 57:18Let me tell you what happened there.
- 57:21Chico Carrasco was charging in at third.
- 57:24Billy Harrell at short was coming in at the edge of the infield grass and Whitey faked a bunt and then just punched the ball.
- 57:30What Casey Singel calls a put your boy swing between third and short out to left field for a base hit.
- 57:36And the Yankee pitchers have really been crossing up the opposition this year.
- 57:39That's about the fourth or fifth time that Casey has let the pitcher hit away when a bunt seemed to be in order.
- 57:46And now the Yankees have runners at first and second with one away here in the top of the fourth in the bat of Harry Simpson.
- 57:51Harry bounced out short to first and walked.
- 57:54The stretch point I left here to Pitcher Simpson is strike one a slider on the outside corner on deck Yogi Berra.
- 58:16The stretch and a change up curve is in this strike two.
- 58:20Beautiful change up curve nipped the inside corner.
- 58:24Nothing in two to count on Harry Simpson with one away in the top of the fourth no score in the ball game.
- 58:29Marv Throneberry down at second base Whitey forward at first.
- 58:33You can tell it's a beautiful day Whitey didn't even ask for his jacket to put on.
- 58:39The stretch the two strike pitch is swinging amidst strike three.
- 58:46And I want to tell you you can see Narleski when he's in trouble put that little extra on that fastball.
- 58:52Man he really fires it.
- 58:55That's strike out number four for Narleski.
- 59:01And it brings up Yogi Berra who beat out an infield single in the first inning and flying to right in the third.
- 59:10Two away now with runners at first and second.
- 59:22Narleski into a stretch position.
- 59:24This Yogi is a high fly deep to right field way back.
- 59:29Narleski and it's a hard run for Yogi Berra.
- 59:35And as Yogi saw the ball go over the fence he jumps up in the air and threw his arms up in the air.
- 59:43The way Yogi's been going he figured Colavito was going to catch that ball.
- 59:48Yogi Berra hits a three run home run off Ray Narleski with two out here in the top of the fourth inning.
- 59:58And the Yankees now lead in the ball game three to nothing.
- 1:00:04Colavito came close to catching that ball.
- 1:00:06He went as far back as he could to the temporary fence that runs from left field over to right field.
- 1:00:12Leaped high in the air and the ball just went over his glove.
- 1:00:18Here's Tony Kubek.
- 1:00:20Tony fouls the first pitch back out of play strike one.
- 1:00:23Kubek fly to center and beat out a bunch one for two.
- 1:00:37Frank Ricetti runs in a third and picks up an orange that fell down on the field.
- 1:00:53One strike to count on Tony Kubek.
- 1:00:57Narleski ready.
- 1:00:59Foul just below a strike two.
- 1:01:03And Joe Trimble gets one of the easiest fouls I've ever seen.
- 1:01:08It hit the screen, bounced back up into the seats and rolled back.
- 1:01:13Just missed John Jorberges head.
- 1:01:20Two strike pitch inside, ball one, one ball and two strikes.
- 1:01:38Wind up.
- 1:01:39And the curveball foul just below it.
- 1:01:45One ball and two strikes.
- 1:01:53Yeah, they're shooting at us today, I tell you.
- 1:01:56All balls are coming back hot and heavy.
- 1:01:59Another supply for pay them fire out early.
- 1:02:03One ball and two strikes.
- 1:02:11The pitch is inside ball two, two and two.
- 1:02:30Narleski checking the sign from Dick Brown.
- 1:02:38The pitch is a slow curve, hits into left field, Mennie Minoso over to his right under it.
- 1:02:43Takes it for number three and for the Yankees in the top of the fourth, three runs on three hits.
- 1:02:50No Indian errors, nobody left the score at the end of three and a half innings.
- 1:02:53The Yankees three and the Indians nothing.

- 1:03:56Atlantic and baseball, bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:03:58Yankees spring to the lead three to nothing.
- 1:04:00Yogi's home run into right field.
- 1:04:03Last to the fourth, Minosso, Preston Ward and Dick Brown, the third, fourth and fifth hitters in the order.
- 1:04:09Swings in, misses at a curve ball, strike one.
- 1:04:12Minosso with that open stance of his, his right foot almost in back or home plate. Another curve, this one bounces away from Barra for ball one, strike one.
- 1:04:30Minosso forwards for station identification.
- 1:04:42All Yankee baseball games are brought to you by Valentine Beer and Ale and Atlantic Gasoline exclusively in the Capital District over WOKO 1460 on the dial.
- 1:04:53On deck, Preston Ward.
- 1:05:01The 2-1 pitch, a slow curve hit in left field, a line drive base hit.
- 1:05:05Harry Simpson on one hop grabs it.
- 1:05:10As Minie Minosso took that high slow curve right in his eyes and lined it in the left field.
- 1:05:15Hit number two of Whitey Ford and here's Preston Ward who popped the short in the first inning.
- 1:05:31Preston Ward a left hand hitter.
- 1:05:37Stretched by four. Best ball is high, ball one.
- 1:05:53Minosso leads off first. Sidearm first, well hit in the ground.
- 1:05:57Mark Thornberry's got McDougall, throws to Ford for the out. A nice play by Gil McDougall, that play goes from three to four to one.
- 1:06:08As Mark Thornberry got his glove on the ball.
- 1:06:13He gets an assist on that play and Preston Ward is out and Minosso moving down to second base.
- 1:06:20And the batter, Dick Brown who popped to McDougall at second base in the second inning.
- 1:06:36Dick Brown a right hand batter.
- 1:06:40Slightly open stance, not as much as Minosso but with his left foot back from his right foot, sort of facing the pitcher.
- 1:06:49Curve is inside ball one. McDougall has given many a hard time on his second running him back.
- 1:06:55Minosso's a real good base runner.
- 1:07:06Here's a stretch by Whitey.
- 1:07:11The curve is hit through the middle out to center field, a base hit. Here's Minosso around third and he scores.
- 1:07:28Dick Brown hits a single up the middle out to center field, scoring many Minosso from second base.
- 1:07:33It's now a 3-1 ball game in favor of the Yankees.
- 1:07:37And with one away, Dick Brown at first is Chico Carrasqueda who popped to first base in the second inning.
- 1:07:48Brown looks like a pretty good hitter.
- 1:07:52He's got four home runs already this year.
- 1:07:57Since the Chico has hit, off fourth league and it's a base hit for Chico Carrasqueda.
- 1:08:23That was a hot shot right back to the mound. Before Whitey could get his bat down, he hit him on the inside part of his left foot
- 1:08:30and ricocheted over to third base. And before Lumpy could come up with the ball, Carrasqueda passed first down to second.
- 1:08:37Dick Brown and the Indians have runners at first and second.
- 1:08:41One man is out here in the left. To the fourth they have one run in. The Yankees lead 3-1.
- 1:08:46Rocky Colavito, the boy from the Bronx, he's got a lot of power.
- 1:08:58Third ball is outside in high ball one.
- 1:09:13Here's a stretch. And the pitch, the curve is hit. Oh, down the left field line.
- 1:09:20Back in the seat out play. Man, that was a vicious foul ball.
- 1:09:29It looks like we're going to have a little action in the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:09:34Art Ditmar gets the call. Start limbering up.
- 1:09:40Three solid base hits off Whitey and so K.P. Stengel taking no chances.
- 1:09:48Curve is in the dirt. Yogi blocks it nicely. Ball two, two and one.
- 1:09:54Man, we not only got a big crowd today, we got a noisy crowd here.
- 1:09:58They're really whooping it up.
- 1:10:09The ball stretches. A 2-1 pitch. Low curve hit.
- 1:10:11Trev and McDougal up with it.
- 1:10:16First to first in time to get Colavito. A nice play.
- 1:10:20Rocky hit that ball right off the end of his bat and it's squibbed by Ford.
- 1:10:24McDougal playing it back at second. Had a run in. Scoop it up and throw to first.
- 1:10:29Both runners advanced. There are men at second and third.
- 1:10:34Two out in the bat of Roger Maris. Maris bounced out short to first in the third inning.
- 1:11:05Roger Maris, a left hand hitter. Whitey, Ford on the mound. Into his windup.
- 1:11:10And the curve ball is strike one as Maris stepped out of the way of the curve and it broke over.
- 1:11:29Again, Ford into his windup. Curve is a little outside ball, 1-1-1.
- 1:11:37There's action in the Indian bullpen too.
- 1:11:42It's Joe Ripley's got to put the glasses on him. They're a mile away from here.
- 1:11:53Here's the windup. Sidearm curve is low outside. Ball through 2-1-1.
- 1:11:59Grant and Faresi warming up. Grant the right hander, Faresi the left hander.
- 1:12:17Two balls and one strike to count on Roger Maris.
- 1:12:25Here's the 2-1 pitch. Low outside, ball three, 3-1.
- 1:12:36Rod Dittmar warming up all alone in the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:12:40And Jim Mudcat Grant, a right hander. And Don Faresi, a left hander, warming up for the Indians.
- 1:12:47Here's the windup. The 3-1 pitch. Outside, ball four, he lost them.
- 1:12:55The first walk given up by Whitey Ford and the bases are loaded.
- 1:13:00Maris is down at first base. Kara Skellig second. Dick Brown over third.
- 1:13:11And they're getting somebody from out of the bullpen.
- 1:13:16Gary Geiger is running out to the bullpen.
- 1:13:21And coming in from the bullpen, as a pinch hitter.
- 1:13:30And J.W. Porter is coming on to pinch hit for Ray Lalesky.
- 1:13:37J.W. Porter, who was with the St. Louis Browns or Detroit Tigers.
- 1:13:42He is a catcher and an outfielder, a right hand batter.
- 1:13:47He's batting 250 so far for Cleveland. He's been up just four times with one base hit.
- 1:13:52He has one run battered in.
- 1:14:13J.W. Porter, a right hand hitter, comes on to pinch hit for Ray Lalesky.
- 1:14:20And for Lalesky, he went four innings, giving up six hits, walk three, struck out four, and allowed three runs.
- 1:14:32So here's Porter digging in with the bases loaded and two out.
- 1:14:36The Yankees leading 3-1 here in the last of the quarter.
- 1:14:40The curve is hit on the ground and shot.
- 1:14:43Go back to McGoogle for out number three for the Indians in the last of the fourth.
- 1:14:48One run on three base hits. No Yankee.
- 1:14:51Eris Freeman left the score at the end of four.
- 1:14:53The Yankees three, the Indians one, and now Joe Ripley.
- 1:14:57Okay, Phil, let's run down the scores.

- 1:16:16Give you the play-by-play here at Municipal Stadium Cleveland.
- 1:16:23Beautiful day, still sunshiny, bright, warm, blue sky.
- 1:16:28Weatherman this morning had said something about the weather turning rainy,
- 1:16:34but so far there's certainly no sign of that here.
- 1:16:40First batter up for the Yankees, who lead by a score of 3-1.
- 1:16:46The first batter will be Mickey Mantle.
- 1:16:51Now here's Mel.
- 1:16:54And as we get ready to move into the first half of the fifth inning,
- 1:16:58your host is Ballantine Beer, the CRISPR professor.
- 1:17:02Enjoy a glass of Ballantine Beer along with the game.
- 1:17:04It's icily light, smooth and delicious, precisely right.
- 1:17:10Don Floresse coming in to pitch for the Indians.
- 1:17:17The left-hander that went to the ninth inning once against the Yankees
- 1:17:22with a no-hitter in his grasp and lost it then.
- 1:17:29Mickey Mantle, one for two,
- 1:17:34standing right-handed against the left-handed pitching, Floresse.
- 1:17:38The left-hander throws and it's in there for a strike.
- 1:17:53In comes the next pitch and it's over, strike two.
- 1:17:59There is nothing in two, this is his eighth appearance.

- 1:19:32Buried a three-run homer with two out in the fourth inning.
- 1:19:39Next pitch, swung on and missed, strike two, two-two.
- 1:20:00The two-two pitch, ball three inside.
- 1:20:11Ferressi had an 11-5 record for Vancouver last year and won one in Baltimore.
- 1:20:18Now the delivery.
- 1:20:20It's low inside for ball four and McDougal walks for the third straight time.
- 1:20:29Into the plate comes Jerry Lompe, who grounded the second and lined the left.
- 1:20:37Alston Howard on deck.
- 1:20:52The delivery to Jerry, swung on, it's a high fly ball to the center.
- 1:20:55Ferressi getting back, flips the glasses down and makes the catch.
- 1:20:59McDougal, a little better than a half-way to second, retreats to first.
- 1:21:05Two men down and Alston Howard steps in, fouled out the catcher and grounded a short.
- 1:21:10Three to one New York, it's the fifth inning.

- 1:22:47No runs, no hits, no errors and one man left on.
- 1:22:52At the end of four and a half innings, the score remains the Yankees three and the Indians one.
- 1:22:59After all these years, you know, there's nothing I enjoy more than a good baseball game.
- 1:23:04The action, the thrills, the cumulative things that just build up to the various climaxes in one game or a series really makes the sport great.
- 1:23:15Just like Ballantine's got everything that makes a beer great.
- 1:23:18No wonder it's called the Crisp Professor.
- 1:23:21Ballantine beer is icily light, crisply clear, smooth and downright delicious as a beer can be.
- 1:23:29Just lift a glass to your lips and you'll see what we all mean when we say Ballantine beer is the Crisp Professor.
- 1:23:36From that frothy white head to the last lively golden swallow, Ballantine beer has really got what you want in beer.
- 1:23:44So look for the three ring sign, make the three ring sign and ask the man for Ballantine.

- 1:24:09Harrell's at one for one, the pitch is outside, ball one.
- 1:24:15What a bunt to bring Lumpy in a little.
- 1:24:21Forward into the windup and the pitch is low, ball two.
- 1:24:28Whitey has not been too sharp today.
- 1:24:39The two-nothing delivery is high, ball three.
- 1:24:57The three-nothing pitch inside ball four.
- 1:25:02Harrell walks.

- 1:25:43Whitey's fighting out there to regain his control touch.
- 1:25:52The left-hander sets, delivers inside, ball two.
- 1:25:56Six straight pitches that have failed to hit the strike zone.
- 1:26:01And Turner signals to the bullpen for our dip mar to get up again.
- 1:26:19Two balls, no strikes and the pitch, it's over two and one.
- 1:26:38And the next delivery, over, strike two, two-two.
- 1:26:55Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:26:58Curve ball is looped out in the right field for a face hit.
- 1:27:01There goes Harrell stopping at second.
- 1:27:04He rounded it and then came right back quickly as Howard threw in.
- 1:27:09And the Indians have runners on first and second, nobody out.
- 1:27:13And Mindy Minoso coming up.
- 1:27:23Art Ditmar warming up for the Yankees.
- 1:27:28Preston Ward's on deck, Dick Brown to follow.
- 1:27:32Minoso grounded to short and single to left.
- 1:27:39Two on, nobody out.
- 1:27:44Forward to the stretch, pitch to Minny, outside, ball one.
- 1:27:51Throneberry is in close at first.
- 1:28:00Here's the delivery and it's in there for a strike, one and one.
- 1:28:05And now Minoso has another look at Eddie Stanky.
- 1:28:09The take was on on the last pitch.
- 1:28:11One ball, one strike.
- 1:28:19Billy Harrell on second, Vilon first.
- 1:28:22They've got speed on the bases and power at the plate.
- 1:28:24Three to one New York, fifth inning.
- 1:28:30Ford again to the stretch.
- 1:28:32Throw to second and the runner's back.
- 1:28:35Pickoff effort.
- 1:28:37White hit it, whirled and threw to the bag.
- 1:28:38McDougall jumped over and grabbed it.
- 1:28:41He was deployed over toward the bag with a full hitter up.
- 1:28:49Again the stretch by Ford.
- 1:28:51Here's the pitch.
- 1:28:52He's sprung on and bowled back out of play.

- 1:29:53Minosa takes high.
- 1:29:56Slow curve, two-two.
- 1:30:13The stretch by Ford.
- 1:30:14Here's the delivery.
- 1:30:16Swung on, it's a pop-up to third.
- 1:30:19And the infield fly rule is called.
- 1:30:21The batter is automatically out.
- 1:30:23The umpire has had a delay a little bit on the call
- 1:30:25because so close to the line,
- 1:30:27it must be a fair ball for an infield fly rule to be invoked.
- 1:30:30If it's a foul, the infield fly rule does not prevail.
- 1:30:39The rule of course which says,
- 1:30:40this is for the newer fans and with runners on first and second
- 1:30:43or first, second and third,
- 1:30:46less than two out if the batter hits a pop-up,
- 1:30:48which in the judgment of the umpires can be handled by an infielder,
- 1:30:51the batter is automatically out.
- 1:30:53But it must be a fair ball, that's why they had to wait.
- 1:30:55Here's Preston Ward.
- 1:30:57Left-hand batter takes high and inside, ball one.
- 1:31:04Ward flying to left and grounded to McDougall.
- 1:31:11Carroll on second, Avila on first.
- 1:31:14Whitey Ford's pitch, curve, is swung on foul, back out of play.
- 1:31:20A one-one count on Preston Ward.
- 1:31:33One ball, one strike.
- 1:31:38Ward to the stretch, a look around, and the pitch.
- 1:31:43Outside, ball two, two and one.
- 1:31:53A two-one count on the first baseman.
- 1:32:01Ward again to the stretch, a look around to two runners, and the pitch.
- 1:32:04Swung on, a looping foul, a third, and it's out of play.
- 1:32:12A two-two count.
- 1:32:33McDougall's two strikes went out, Carroll leads off second, Avila off first.
- 1:32:37Whitey Ford pitches, Preston Ward swings and misses, strike three.
- 1:32:43Two men out, and Dick Brown coming up.
- 1:32:47He's at one for two.
- 1:32:53He's a good hitter.
- 1:32:55A six-foot, 275-pounder, 23 years old, from Herb Scores, hometown, Lake Worth, Florida.
- 1:33:08Herb originally is from New York.
- 1:33:10He was a kid.
- 1:33:11He moved to Lake Worth.
- 1:33:18New York, two out, two on.
- 1:33:31Whitey into the stretch, and the pitch, swung on and missed, strike one.
- 1:33:51Dick Brown at the plate, Aron on second, Avila on first.
- 1:33:57Forward to the stretch, and here's the delivery.
- 1:34:01Swung on, a bouncer hits the third, Lumpy takes it, steps on third for the four-side of Harrell, and the side's retired.
- 1:34:10No runs, one hit, no errors, two men left on.
- 1:34:15And at the end of five innings of play, the Yankees three runs, six hits, no errors, seven left on.
- 1:34:20The Indians one-one-five hits, no errors, and seven men left on base.
- 1:34:24We pause for station identification.

- 1:35:31Los Angeles and Philadelphia, rained out, single game.
- 1:35:35San Francisco at Pittsburgh, 2-2 at the end of six innings.
- 1:35:38As for San Francisco, a lot for Pittsburgh, but Blackburn has come on in the seventh.
- 1:35:53As we move into the sixth inning, Marv Throneberry hitting eighth in the orders,
- 1:35:5824 to follow, and then Harry Simpson, who's in the leadoff spot.
- 1:36:09And Don Foresse, a left-hander who relieved Nileski at last inning,
- 1:36:17into the windup and the pitch to Throneberry is in there for a strike.
- 1:36:25The outfield playing Throneberry straight away, well spread out,
- 1:36:29protecting the foul lines as much as possible, and the pitch, it's high, ball one, one and one.
- 1:36:46One ball, one strike.
- 1:36:49And the one-one pitch, look out, high and inside, gets away from Brown to the screen.

- 1:38:41It helped to keep a rally alive.
- 1:38:43It was climaxed in the fourth inning by Yogi Berra's three-run homer.
- 1:38:47Throneberry had singled his run out in the fourth.
- 1:38:50Ford singled and with two down, Berra hit the home run.
- 1:38:55Whitey has his look at Frank Presetti.
- 1:38:57Chico Kairoskala, third, moves in close.
- 1:39:00Preston Moore holding against Throneberry.
- 1:39:03Foresse pitches, Ford takes it inside for ball.
- 1:39:10He almost offered at it.
- 1:39:18And the delivery, Bunt it, and Ward will make his play to second base.
- 1:39:22For one, they throw back to first and he gets away from Abela and in the Indians' dugout,
- 1:39:27and Ford goes down to second.
- 1:39:30Carroll threw the ball away, trying to double up Ford at first with Abela covering.
- 1:39:36And Bunt, for the attempted sacrifice, it resulted in a force out at second.
- 1:39:42Throneberry wore it to Harrell, whose throw then to Abela, covering, to try and double Ford,
- 1:39:54was low, bounded by Abela and an Indian dugout, and the ground rule prevailed,
- 1:39:59and Ford was motioned on to second.
- 1:40:04Here's Harry Simpson, who grounded a short, walked, and struck out.
- 1:40:10Don Foresse to the stretch, the pitch to Simpson, high and inside.
- 1:40:14So the effect of the attempted sacrifice actually took place,
- 1:40:20but with Ford on second instead of Throneberry, they'd rather have had Ford in the dugout resting.
- 1:40:26And to there, Bridget Simpson, inside, ball two.
- 1:40:44And here's the pitch to Harry, and it's over for a strike, two and one.
- 1:40:59Two balls, one strike, and the pitch, swung on, there's the loop over short to left for a base hit,
- 1:41:04but Ford, Ford's being waved in and he couldn't pick the ball up and throws too late.
- 1:41:09And Ford scores.
- 1:41:12It was a single to short left, but Noera is charged on the play,
- 1:41:21although many had trouble picking the ball up, and Ford was going to stop at third and then throw-waved him on.
- 1:41:34Now right of it, double check. Noera. Noera.
- 1:41:50Ford to one, New York.
- 1:41:58Yogi Berra steps in, he's at two for three, a single and a three-run homer.
- 1:42:05Feressi's pitch, low, ball one, Yogi checked his swing.
- 1:42:21And the pitch, swung on, hit by first to right field for a base hit, but Simpson stops at second.
- 1:42:28Colabito cuts loose with his good throw, cut off by Billy Harrell.
- 1:42:33Berra gets his third hit, single to right.
- 1:42:37Tony Kubek steps in, fly to center, beat out of front to third, fly to left.
- 1:42:43The Indian bullpen gets the call.
- 1:43:12Don Feressi, ready to work to Tony Kubek.
- 1:43:28Another pitch, outside, ball one.
- 1:43:43Next pitch is swung on and fouled off. Bob Lemmon's up and throwing.
- 1:43:53Kelly and Lemmon warming up. Bob Kelly and Bob Lemmon. Lemmon was reinstated yesterday, he'd been on the disabled list.
- 1:44:03Gerald Hardy was put on the disabled list after suffering attack of appendicitis.
- 1:44:17One ball, one strike on Kubek. One run in on the sixth inning, 4-1 New York. Simpson on second and Berra on first.
- 1:44:25Don Feressi to the stretch. And the 1-1 pitch, swung on, hit foul, back a third out of play.
- 1:44:48One ball, two strikes.
- 1:44:59Feressi's pitch, curve ball low outside, 2-2.
- 1:45:16A 2-2 count.
- 1:45:23Don Feressi into the stretch once more. Here's the pitch to Kubek, swung on, hit back to the box. Feressi throws to Harrell for one, back to first double play.
- 1:45:35And the side's retired. One run, two hits, one error, and one left on. And the score's down to five and a half innings of play. The Yankees four, the Indians one.
- 1:45:49Valentine's beer is a crisp refresher. And we will tell you why. To be crisp, a beer must be ice-ly light, ice-ly light, ice-ly light.
- 1:46:05Smooth and delicious, it's ice-ly right, it's ice-ly right, it's ice-ly right. Lightly golden, freshly clear, it's a crisp refresher, it's a crisp refresher. Valentine, Valentine's beer.
- 1:46:19Hey, get your bottle. Hey, get your bottle. Hey, get your bottle. Hey, get your bottle. Hey, get your right hand's Valentine's beer.
- 1:46:36The only one thing, those boys really sing the story well. And what do you look for in a glass of beer? For smooth and delicious taste, the crisp refresher? Well, friends, that's precisely what you get in every single glass of Valentine's beer.
- 1:46:50It's the crisp refresher. Last half of the sixth inning. Chico Carrascau, Rocky Colabito, and Roger Maris, first three men up. Six, seven, eight positions in the order.
- 1:47:06Bob Lemma and Bob Kelly continue to warm up, so there's always the possibility of a pinch hitter for Foresse, who is fourth up in this inning if somebody gets bored.
- 1:47:21The Yankees will be home on Friday for the holiday doubleheader. After that, a two-game visit to Boston and back to New York to open a stand against the West starting Monday night, a make-up game of the Chicago White Sox, Monday night, June 2nd, Tuesday night, June 3rd, Wednesday afternoon, June 4th, and a doubleheader, June 5th, for the White Sox.
- 1:47:44A doubleheader with these Indians awake from the day, or two weeks from today, rather, at the stadium. Board pitching now to Carrascau. Fast ball is high, ball one.
- 1:48:02A whine into the wind up delivers. Curve ball, and it's a little high, ball two, two and nothing.
- 1:48:16A two-nothing pitch to the right-hand hitter. Carrascau takes high and away, ball three. Whitey's been laboring out there today. His three-nothing pitch. It's inside, ball four, and Carrascau walks.
- 1:48:41Now Rocky Colabito moves up to the plate, and is struck out and grounded to second.
- 1:48:54Third walk, issued by Ford. He's been having trouble ever since the third inning.
- 1:49:04A pitch over the inside corner, strike one.
- 1:49:15Although he's only given up one run and five hits, he's been in frequent trouble.
- 1:49:25Check for the runner. A pitch inside, ball one, one and one.
- 1:49:35And now the Yankee bullpen gets called, and Ryan Duren gets up.
- 1:49:44Whitey delivers, swung on. There's a drive in the center, a manhole going over, and makes the catch in left center, a high liner. One down.
- 1:49:55Roger Marist comes to bat, grounded to short and walk, left-hand hitter.
- 1:50:07Colabito walking in the Indians' dugout, slams the water cooler.
- 1:50:17Last of the sixth, the Yanks for Indians one. Carrascau moves off first. A pitch to Marist, curve ball over, strike one.
- 1:50:26Casey's got Elston Howard playing way over to the right field line.
- 1:50:31Marist goes in the right center. Simpson almost straightaway left, leaving a big gap in left center.
- 1:50:39Whitey pitches, Marist takes fastball outside, and accounts one and one.
- 1:50:53Ball one, strike. Whitey to the stretch. Carrascau leading away, and the pitch. Curve ball way outside, ball two, two and one.
- 1:51:18Whitey's been behind a lot of these batters, which in itself is proof he's not on his game, because when he's sharp, as most pitches are, they stay ahead of those hitters.
- 1:51:27Here's the delivery, swung on and grounded foul over toward the Indians' dugout.
- 1:51:32Count two, two now. Mann leaned over to try to get the ball, and hit just below his hand, and he missed it. Zick ricocheted back to the playing field.
- 1:51:57Two balls, two strikes. Whitey into the stretch, then steps off the rubber. Marist steps out for a moment.
- 1:52:07Now he's back in, Whitey is back on, and Carrascau's back off of first.
- 1:52:12A stretch by Ford, a look over Carrascau, the pitch is swung on, high fly ball to right. Elston Howard's under it and makes the catch.
- 1:52:24Carrascau retreating to first, two down, and Don Faresi is the scheduled batter.
- 1:52:32Lemon and Kelly still warming up in the bullpen, and Mickey Vernon is going to come up to hit for Don Faresi.
- 1:52:53Vernon's batting 371.
- 1:53:20Forty-year-old Mickey Vernon, an outstanding performer through the years. Ford's pitch, curve ball is over, strike one.
- 1:53:31Billy Harrell, the leadoff man on deck. It's the last of the sixth inning, four to one, New York.
- 1:53:39Carrascau moves off first, Ford delivers, and Vernon swings and fouls it to the left of the plate, out of play.
- 1:53:45Two, he's trying to punch that one to the opposite field.
- 1:53:51Ryan Duren continues to loosen up for New York.
- 1:53:56Either Bob Lemon or Bob Kelly will be coming on.
- 1:54:02Here's the pitch, and it's in there for golf strike three, curve ball, retiring the side.
- 1:54:10Four runs, no hits, no errors, and one left on, the end of six innings.
- 1:54:15The Yankees, four runs, eight hits, no errors, and eight left on.
- 1:54:19Cleveland, one run, five hits, one error, and eight men left on.
- 1:54:24And Bob Lemon, already getting a hand, gets into the automobile that swings around from beyond the right field fence where the Indian bullpen is located.
- 1:54:35And he'll be coming in to pitch. He just reinstated after being put on the disabled list, and he'll get a hand. Bob Lemon, listen.
- 1:54:43Lemon gets out of the car, walking the mound, and the fans continue applauding. A great ball player.
- 1:55:06Lemon made two appearances this year, a record of nothing in one, worked only three in the third innings.
- 1:55:21He had his arm operated on last winter, and he acted up on him, and he was put on the disabled list.
- 1:55:28He just reinstated yesterday, North Carol Hardy, being taken off the roster for the nephandectomy.
- 1:55:43So Bob Lemon's coming on, a six-foot, 190-pound, 38-year-old right-hander, and not quite 38, who will be in a couple of months.
- 1:55:59Bob, last year, had a 6'11 record, developing that sore arm.
- 1:56:19He has a lifetime record of 207 wins, 128 losses. Seven times he was a 20-game winner.
- 1:56:33He started pitching for the Indians in 1946. One of the all-time greats in my book.
- 1:56:40The first man he faces, Mickey Mantle, first of the seven. The pitch, swung on, supply ball hit the left.
- 1:56:46Manosa getting back for it, right near the fence, and makes the catch.
- 1:56:54Went away in the seventh. Mantle, one for four. Gail McDougall has walked three times.
- 1:57:1811 to the wind. Up around comes the right arm. The pitch is inside, ball one.
- 1:57:24The Indians are wearing pinstripe uniforms this year, a la the Yankees. They used to always have just plain white.
- 1:57:32Now the delivery. It's over there for a strike, one and one.
- 1:57:45The next pitch, over, strike two, one and two. Got a fastball over the inside corner.
- 1:58:00Don Perezzi worked two innings, allowed two hits, walked two, struck out two, gave up one run.
- 1:58:05Ray Naleski, who started, worked the very first four innings.
- 1:58:08Next pitch, DeGale swung on and popped up toward third.
- 1:58:11Tarasco moves in on the infield grass, makes the catch, two down.
- 1:58:18And out of the plate comes Jerry Lumpy, who grounded the second, lined the left, and flied the center.
- 1:58:25Lemon has a good sinker in his repertoire of pitches, which include, of course, good fastball and curve and slider.
- 1:58:41Lemon's pitch to Lumpy's bun it, and missed, strike one.
- 1:58:48Four to one, New York, seven pinning.
- 1:58:52Johnny Cooks and Vic Tominak are the pitchers for the second game.
- 1:59:00Lemon's one strike offering. It's over, strike two, nothing and two.
- 1:59:21Two strike pitch. It's low outside, one and two. Ball gets away from Vic Brown.
- 1:59:50Now the one-two pitch on its way to the left-hand hitter. It's low inside, two-two.
- 2:00:10Two balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 2:00:28Lemon to the windup, around comes the right arm, the pitch, and Lumpy takes it just outside, ball three, three and two.
- 2:00:41A full count on Jerry.
- 2:00:50Lemon studies the sign given to him by Vic Brown. He's ready as the windup, the payoff pitch, swung on him, missed, strike three.
- 2:00:59No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 2:01:03And the score, they have a six and a half innings. The Yankees four, and the Indians one.
- 2:01:09And Lemon gets a hand. He comes in after being reinstated from the disabled list and pitches a fine inning.
- 2:01:18You know, for over 300 years, your neighborhood Tavern has been known as the place of good fellowship, and May is National Tavern Month.

- 2:01:52Now how about it friends, stop in at your friendly tavern during National Tavern Month, and while you're there, make that good old free-ring sign.
- 2:02:00Ask the man for Ballantine, Ballantine beer, the crisp refresher.

- 2:02:14All Yankee baseball games are brought to you by Ballantine beer and ale and Atlantic gasoline, exclusively in the Capital District over W.O.K.O. 1460 on the dial, Albany's first station.
- 2:02:26Jimmy Harrell was hit by a pitched ball, single to center, and walked.
- 2:02:324-1 New York, last for 7. Whitey Ford's pitch is high and inside, ball one.
- 2:02:48One ball, more strikes.
- 2:02:52And the delivery. It's in there, strike one, winning one.
- 2:02:59One ball, one strike.
- 2:03:03On to the windup, in comes the pitch, swung out, lined to third.
- 2:03:08Hot slider, head high, Jerry Lumpy grabbed it.
- 2:03:15Bobby Avila, lined to right, struck out, and single to right. He's at one out of three. Miniminosa on deck.
- 2:03:35Board into the windup, and the pitch is curved, swung on, and fouled off over toward the Yankee dugout.
- 2:03:42Bobby's a one-time American League batting champion.
- 2:03:51From Veracruz, Mexico, the one-strike pitch, it's inside, ball one.
- 2:03:59Avila's wearing a golfer's glove on his left hand, a little tender.
- 2:04:14Here's the one-one pitch, swung on, it's a high drive to left.
- 2:04:19Simpson getting back near the barrier and makes the catch about five feet from the fence.
- 2:04:25Two men away, and the last of the seventh.
- 2:04:31Now coming up is Miniminosa, grounded to short, single to left, and popped to third.
- 2:04:51Open stance, the rear foot in close to the plate, the front foot, left foot, pulled away.
- 2:05:00Half-paces the pitcher head-on. The delivery is high outside, ball one.
- 2:05:12One ball, no strikes.
- 2:05:17Board into the windup, and the pitch on its way. Curve is in there, strike one, slow curve.
- 2:05:29One ball, one strike.
- 2:05:37Two-one pitch, the right-handed, curve in tight, ball two. He started to swing and held up, Whitey, broke the curve ball in on the best of the hitter.
- 2:05:50Two-and-one, the count on Miniminosa, and leans over that plate in the pit of the crouch.
- 2:05:56And the two-one pitch, fast ball, hit to the box. Whitey grabs it on the hop, throws on over the thrown barrier, and the side is retired.
- 2:06:05No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on. At the end of seven-inning supply, the Yankees lead four to one. Four runs, eight hits, no errors. To one run, five hits, one error.
- 2:06:14As refreshing as a cool breeze on a hot summer day, that's the Crisp Professor, Valentine Beer. Enjoy some along with the game.
- 2:06:22Valentine Beer is icily light, smooth, and delicious, precisely right. Phil will be on in to finish up the game for you as we switch back to TV.
- 2:06:31In the meantime, Joe Ripley will run down the scores for you.
- 2:06:36Okay, well, the batteries, the game between Baltimore and Kansas City.
- 2:06:42Going for Baltimore and Garber for Kansas City. First of two, Boston and Chicago. At the end of three full innings, Boston three, Chicago one.
- 2:06:52Second with two on. And a double header between Washington and Detroit. First game at the end of two and a half. Washington two, Detroit nothing.
- 2:07:08The camera again is running. Blues, home run for Washington in the third. In the National League, St. Louis and Cincinnati playing two games. First game at the end of four and a half innings.
- 2:07:23St. Louis four, Cincinnati one. Brosnan for St. Louis. Rafe started for Cincinnati, relieved by Acker in the fourth.
- 2:07:30Chicago and Milwaukee playing a double header. At the end of four full innings, the first game, Chicago one, Milwaukee zero. Phillips against Trollpreech.
- 2:07:41Los Angeles to Philadelphia, rained out. San Francisco defeated Pittsburgh first of two, five, fifteen, three. Pittsburgh two runs nine, hits one error. Here's the pitch and Phil.
- 2:07:51Austin Howard hits the first pitch to shortstop the third of first in time for the out. One away as Ellie Howard is now 0-4 on the day.
- 2:08:09Yeah Joe, you got some help? I just want to say Gomez was the winning pitcher and Law the losing pitcher in the first game San Francisco. Okay Joe. Here's Marv Throneberry who is one for two, struck out, single a right and walked.
- 2:08:23Bob Lemon on the mound. The fastball is on the outside corner, strike one. Bob Lemon will receive such a thunderous ovation on his first start since being on the disabled list. Curveball is low inside, ball one, one and one.
- 2:08:41Lemon is one of the top pitchers in the big leagues. Walk in as an infielder outfielder. Will Bejoe switched him over to pitching. Here's the one-one pitch. Curve low inside, ball two, two and one.
- 2:09:07When Lemon is right, which means when he's got his good stuff, he's as tough to hit as anybody in the big leagues. Never gives you the same pitch twice. Ball's always doing something, never a straight ball, curve, sliders, sinkers, knuckle balls, change of places.
- 2:09:26The two-one pitch is just outside low ball three, three and one.
- 2:09:45Lemon ready. The three-one pitch is outside ball four. He lost him. Down to first base goes Marv Throneberry. And coming to the bat, Whitey four.
- 2:10:05Whitey struck out in the second and he singles a left field in the fourth. And reached on an error by the shortstop in the sixth inning. One for three.
- 2:10:17And with one away, the Indian infielder looking for the front. This is the third time that Whitey is up with a bunt situation in order. He does that same play and singles the center field. Exactly the same play as he pulled in the fourth inning when he squared around his other bunt and then turned around and just punched the ball into center field.
- 2:10:42The first hitter, Bob Lemon, and man, Whitey Ford has got that play down perfectly. He squares around his other bunt. As the pitch comes in, he just steps back and punches at the ball, not hard.
- 2:10:58And so the Yankees have runners at first and second, one away in the bat of Harry Simpson. Harry's one for three. Bounced out short to first, Warf struck out single to left. First pitch is low outside ball one.
- 2:11:15And that Whitey will have plenty to talk about tonight. And on that ride to Kansas City. A stretch and a pitch to Simpson low inside ball two, two or nothing. Those pitchers like to get their base hits.
- 2:11:40Two balls, no strikes. One away here in the top of the eighth. Yankees lead four to one.
- 2:11:55Tomorrow at the plate, strike one, two balls and one strike.
- 2:12:22Lemon stretches. A 2-1 pitch is fouled back out of play, strike two, two and two.
- 2:12:32Two balls, two strikes and one out. Another big game coming up after this one.
- 2:12:49Throneberry leading with second base, four to first. Two and two to count on Simpson. Here's the stretch by Bob Lemon.
- 2:12:58And the pitch is low in the dirt ball three, three and two as Bob tries to get that sinker down around his knees.
- 2:13:26Full count now on Harry Simpson. Lemon stretches, gets the sign. The pitch is.
- 2:13:45And to run from first to home might have tired him out. And any time a pitcher gets tired running the bases, it shows in the next inning.
- 2:13:54His control isn't quite as good and his fast ball isn't quite as fast and as a result he could be hit pretty hard.
- 2:14:00For Presetti very wisely, has them up and now they're going to walk Yogi Berra to load the bases and pitch to Tony Cooper.
- 2:14:14Here's Lemon giving an intentional pass to Yogi Berra and Yogi's had himself quite a first game here. He singles a deep short, fly to right, home it over the right field wall and then line the single in the right field.
- 2:14:27Three for four on the day and as ball four Yogi gets an intentional pass and it brings up Tony Kubek.
- 2:14:38He throws one for four, fly to center, beat out a bunt, fly to left and hit into a double play.
- 2:14:52One man out and the base is loaded here in the top of the eighth.
- 2:14:58First pitch by Bob Lemon is low outside ball one.
- 2:15:09Bob Kelly gets up in the Indian bullpen.
- 2:15:15Wind up and the pitch to Kubek is a slow ground ball to second base. A run will score but Kubek is out at first base and Tony gets himself an RBI.
- 2:15:28And it's now a six to one ball game as Whitey Ford comes across the score and here's Mickey Mantle.
- 2:15:40And now let's see if they're going to walk Mantle to pitch to McDougal.
- 2:15:47Dick Brown is looking in towards the Cleveland dugout to see what they're going to do and they're putting him on.
- 2:15:58They're going to put Mantle on. Mickey says he doesn't need the helmet but he's got a bat up there with the helmet.
- 2:16:03Ed Hurley is telling Mickey that he's got to put the helmet on. Mickey saw the sign to pass him intentionally so he said to Ed,
- 2:16:11he threw the helmet away and told Hurley that as long as they weren't going to pitch to him he didn't need the helmet.
- 2:16:16But the rules say that you have to wear the helmet when you're at bat.
- 2:16:21And now Ralph Hough has had the helmet on down at first base. You see what the batters do.
- 2:16:25When they get to first base, when they get to first base they take the helmet off, they wear it right over their regular cap,
- 2:16:31and throw it to Ralph Hough coaching and Ralph puts it on his head to save time.
- 2:16:38And now we're ready to go.
- 2:16:43And they're walking Mickey intentionally.
- 2:16:49The fans are booing. Of course they want to see Mantle hit but the strategy of the ball game is to walk Mantle with the base open
- 2:16:56and pitch to the next batter who is a right-hand hitter, Gil McDougal,
- 2:17:01where the percentage of a right-hand pitcher getting a right-hand batter out is greater than of getting a left-hand hitter out.
- 2:17:08There's ball four. Mickey walks.
- 2:17:13And here's Gil McDougal. Gil has walked three times and popped a third.
- 2:17:19Go for one.
- 2:17:37The bases are loaded with two out here on the top of the eighth. The Yankees lead six to one.
- 2:17:42Pitch to McDougal is a curve outside ball one.
- 2:17:55Here's the one-up and pitch to Gil. They foul back out of play.
- 2:18:00Strike one, one-on-one.
- 2:18:05The seminars walk three men in this inning, two of them intentionally. They walk better to load the bases and then Mantle will walk the bases.
- 2:18:14To load the bases.
- 2:18:25One ball, one strike on McDougal.
- 2:18:32Two outside, two outside. Two curve low outside. Ball two, two and one.
- 2:18:52Two balls, one strike and two out. Frank Crisetti coaching a third. Ralph Hock over at first.
- 2:18:59Pitch is outside ball three, three and one.
- 2:19:18The Yankees are getting ready now to three-one pitch. A line drive to right three and Rocky Calavita over 100. Takes it for a round number three.
- 2:19:30And so for the Yankees in the top of the eighth, two runs on two base hits. No Indian errors and three men left on base.
- 2:19:40Seven and a half innings. The Yankees six and the Indians one. And now here's a song about Ballantine beer, the crisp refresher.
- 2:19:54The crispy crisp of beer must be ice and light. The food and delicious is crisp, ice and light. The lively golden, christenly clear.
- 2:20:11The crisp refresher. The crisp refresher. Valentine, Valentine's beer.
- 2:20:24Hey, get your cold cold beer. Hey, get your Valentine's. Hey, get your cold cold beer. Get your ice cold Valentine beer.
- 2:20:44All right, here we go back at municipal stadium for the last half of the seventh inning. The Yankees are leading the ball game six to one.
- 2:21:04Righty-pulled all the way for the Yankees. The Indians have three pitches so far. Ray Nalewski started, Don Foresse, and Bob Lennon.
- 2:21:17And here's Creston Moore, the first baseman who's over three. Popped his short, bounced out to second base, and struck out.
- 2:21:34First pitch is a fast-forward strike one on the outside corner. One-nothing pitch is a curved swing and a missed strike two.
- 2:21:50Bob Kelly continues to warm up in the Indian bullpen because Bob Lennon is making his first appearance since being put on the disabled list,
- 2:21:57and they might let Bob go with a two-winning job to sort of strengthen his arm, maybe not give him too much work the first time out.
- 2:22:06One-one pitch is hit in the right field, a base hit. It looked like he was pulling on the curve, just struck his bat out and sent a liner between first and second off the right field.
- 2:22:20That's hit number six for the Indians, and here's Dick Brown, the catcher, who popped a second single at center to drive in the only run for the Indians so far and popped a third base.
- 2:22:31Rather he hit it grounded at third and lucky grabbed it and stepped on third to the unassisted course play.
- 2:22:41The best ball of ground ball is short. Kubek to McDougall. To Thornberry, he's safe as McDougall's throw pulled him off the bag.
- 2:22:53Tony Kubek almost took that double play himself, and he could have. He was that close to second base at the last second decided to flip it to McDougall.
- 2:23:01The first throw to first base was a little high, pulled Thornberry off the bag, so it's a force play. Six to four, and here's Rocky, now Chico Carascale.
- 2:23:13Chico's one for two, popped a third single, and walk. Service high outside for one.
- 2:23:32That's why he stretches. First ball is hit on the line in left center field. Maddlin over, Howard over, and Maddlin makes the grab over his shoulder.
- 2:23:43That was Maddlin Simpson chasing that ball. Howard is out in right field. Mickey Maddlin makes the grab in left center field.
- 2:23:49And here's Rocky Colavito. Rocky struck out, bounced out second of first, and lined Maddlin's center field.
- 2:24:06He's out here in the last of the eighth, the first pitch to Colavito outside ball one.
- 2:24:23Here's Rocky Colavito, right hand hitter. Forth stretches. Curve is hit in the air to short left center. Pull back back, Simpson in, and Simpson makes the grab.
- 2:24:37So the Indians in the last of the eighth, no runs, one hit. No Yankees, there is one man left. The score at the end of eighth full innings, the Yankees six and the Indians one.
- 2:24:53Take another look at the scoreboard in the American League in a single game. Baltimore at Kansas City at the end of one half inning of play.
- 2:24:59Baltimore nothing, Kansas City at that. Compass against Garver. Boston leads Chicago five to one at the end of four in their first game.
- 2:25:07Bauman for Boston. Donovan started. Forth is in the fourth. Lepsio had a home in the second with two on.
- 2:25:14Washington at Detroit tied two-two at the end of four and a half. Kemmer against Bunning. Blue is the home in the third.
- 2:25:21In the National League, Cardinals lead Cincinnati four to one at the end of five and a half. Bosnian for St. Louis. Graves started for Cincinnati.
- 2:25:30Acker in the fourth. Nuxhole in the sixth. Chicago leads Milwaukee one and nothing at the end of five and a half. Phillips against Trowbridge.
- 2:25:37Los Angeles at Philadelphia postponed because of rain. And the Giants defeated the Pirates in the first game for double out of five to two.
- 2:25:45Gomez the winner. Schmidt and Relief in the eighth. Law the loser. Blackburn in the seventh. Porterfield in the eighth.
- 2:25:51And they have another game to go and starting pitch is Monzant for the Giants. Raiden for Pittsburgh.
- 2:26:01And as there are no pitchers coming in for Cleveland, we'll pause for station identification.
- 2:26:07W. O. Kill, 1460 on your dial. First in Albany. The Troy Buick baseball roundup follows the game.
- 2:26:22Bob Kelly comes in to take over for Bob Lemon. On the air he's one-none and lost one. Has no record against the Yankees.
- 2:26:29His first appearance against the Yankees. This is his seventh appearance of the year. He started three games. This will be his fourth Relief appearance.
- 2:26:44So Bob Lemon while he was in there worked two full innings. He gave up two hits. Walked through two of them intentionally. He struck out one and allowed two runs.
- 2:26:56So Bob did very well. Bob Lemon, that is not Bob Neal, on the mound. Very happy to see Bob Neal again. He's been on a diet, very slim.
- 2:27:12Didn't even recognize him. Oh, Pappy Durkin and I didn't recognize him as he walked in. And Bob Kelly on the mound for the Cleveland Indians pitching to Jerry Lumpy as we get ready to go here in the top of the ninth inning with the Yankees leading 6-1.
- 2:27:33Lumpy's 0-4. Hits a ground ball to second base. Off of Heeler's leg in a short right field. And Lumpy's safe at first base and that will be an error.
- 2:27:42And error charged to Bobby Avila. That was a hot shot but right at Bobby and he lifted his glove a little too soon and went underneath and hit him on the left leg, hopped in a short right field.
- 2:27:54And that will bring up Elston Howard who was 0-4, popped in a catcher, bounced out short to first twice and struck out.
- 2:28:08Preston Ward holding the bag against Jerry Lumpy.
- 2:28:15Here's the stretch by Bob Kelly. The pitch is a line drive to right field. Rocky Colivito going back under it and takes it for out number one.
- 2:28:29And that away is Howard hit a hard shot right out Colivito in right field. And that will bring up Mark Throneberry who's 1-2, struck out single right and walked twice. Scored two runs. Kelly on the mound is a real good palm ball.
- 2:28:45Palm ball is a pitch where you hold it with your little finger and your thumb and just let it slide out. It works a little like a knuckleball and change of pace.
- 2:28:52There it is, strike one. That Throneberry ducking back on the pitch.
- 2:29:05Lumpy leads away. Pass ball is in the dirt ball, one-one-one.
- 2:29:23One ball, one strike. Here's the stretch by Bob Kelly. There's a ground ball right out of Villa, up at it to Howard for one. Back to first, double play.
- 2:29:42And for the Yankees, in the top of the ninth, no runs, no hits. One Cleveland error and nobody left. A score at the end of 8-1 half innings. The Yankees 6 and the Indians 1.
- 2:29:54Well, this is a beautiful day. Now we've got another ball game to go so let's go to the lighter side of baseball. Here's one they tell about a well-known manager.
- 2:30:04When he was managing the Cleveland Indians he showed up one day with a bad cold and kept his handkerchief pretty busy. Right from the start every Cleveland Indian who reached first immediately tried to steal second.
- 2:30:15After a while the manager was puzzled by this unusual display of larceny until one of his coaches reminded him that his steal time was the handkerchief and advised him to come up with a new signal until he got rid of that cold.
- 2:30:27That was a dandy. But now for the lighter side of something else. Let's talk about Valentine beer, the Crisp Refresher.
- 2:30:34Man, just lift a glass of Valentine to your lips. So icily light, so smooth and delicious. Precisely right.
- 2:30:42And on top of that it's lively, golden, crisply clear. That's the Crisp Refresher Valentine beer.
- 2:30:49So make the three ring sign and ask the man for Valentine. Valentine beer.
- 2:30:59And now the Indians are down to their last three outs if they want to stay in this ball game. The Yankees lead them by a score of 6 to 1 as we're playing the last of the night.
- 2:31:14Whitey Ford has gone all the way so far for the Yankees on the mound.
- 2:31:23He'll be facing Roger Maris. Maris is open two, bounce out short to first walk and fly to right field. Left hand hitter, swings at a curve, doesn't get a strike one.
- 2:31:49The one strike pitch is taking high ball one, one and one. You can hear those cowbells in the back of the Cleveland fan who's got on an old black derby.
- 2:32:03Trying to get a rally started here some way. One, one pitch, a slow curve on the inside corner, strike two, one ball, two strikes.
- 2:32:30There's a swing and a miss, strike three. Roger Maris goes down on strikes.
- 2:32:42And with the pitcher, Kelly Dunex, Billy Moran comes down to finch it. Moran's batting 160.
- 2:33:00He's got a team for 81. He has two doubles and four runs about it and a right hand hitter.
- 2:33:14Moran is a fastball lower, ball one. Fastball is inside, ball two, two and nothing.
- 2:33:40Two balls and one strike.
- 2:33:51Here's the two, one pitch, a slow curve foul, a little by the Yankee dugout.
- 2:33:57Two and two to count. On deck, Billy Howell. Well, the bells are ringing.
- 2:34:11A two, two pitch, inside ball three, three and two.
- 2:34:19Brian Dune is up again in the Yankee bullpen. When he gets around that eighth and ninth inning, he's the man that Casey Stengel has been calling on more than anybody else.
- 2:34:28A playoff pitch, a five ball to left field. Harry Simpson over near the line.
- 2:34:34Takes the ball in bad territory near the wall for out number two. Two away.
- 2:34:41And here's Billy Howell, the leadoff man, who has been on base three times, has hit by a pitch ball, single a center walk and then lined a third baseman, Jerry Lumpy.
- 2:34:53And the Indians are down to their lowest out.
- 2:35:04Here's the first pitch to Howell, high ball one.
- 2:35:17The one nothing pitch. There's a ground ball, a third Lumpy up on a big hop.
- 2:35:20The throw to first, the ball game's over and the Yankees win it by a score of six to one.
- 2:35:26For the Indians in the last of the ninth, no runs, no hits, no Yankees, nobody left.
- 2:35:33And that's all for the first game. For the Yankees, six runs, ten hits, no errors, 11 men left.
- 2:35:40For the Indians, one run, six hits, two errors, nine men left.
- 2:35:43The winning pitcher, Whitey Ford, who went all the way, his record now five wins and two defeats.
- 2:35:47The loser, Ray Nolenski, who started and went four innings, his record now five wins and four defeats.
