- 1:03Speaker 1: an interview right now though, Come on all right man,
- 1:08Speaker 1: Bootleg keV podcast. We had a special guest in here,
- 1:11Speaker 1: my bro Jayworthy.
- 1:12Speaker 2: What up keV? Have you be back?
- 1:14Speaker 1: Yes, sir, So we got to talk about this your
- 1:17Speaker 1: debut album. It's a double disc Once upon a Time, Yes, sir.
- 1:22Speaker 1: It's crazy to think that this is your debut solo
- 1:25Speaker 1: album because you have such an insane catalog of music.
- 1:29Speaker 1: But like you said it, you're like, yo, every one
- 1:31Speaker 1: of my projects has either been fully with the producer
- 1:33Speaker 1: or fully like a collab with another artist.
- 1:35Speaker 2: That's true. So I wanted to give people a real
- 1:39Speaker 2: studio album. You know what I mean?
- 1:41Speaker 1: What was like for you? Because you've been putting this
- 1:43Speaker 1: body of work together for a long time, long time.
- 1:46Speaker 1: What has the process been like if you had to say,
- 1:48Speaker 1: just like the amount of time like when you first.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Started, Well, I mean it's crazy because you got records
- 1:52Speaker 2: on there like Reckless that was supposed to be on
- 1:57Speaker 2: active when I started with Yam, So you got records
- 2:02Speaker 2: on there that are actually older than ten years one.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So there's there's a. Yeah, there's a red a.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Ten year process. Man. I feel like when people tell you,
- 2:10Speaker 2: you know, it takes like ten years to get to
- 2:12Speaker 2: where you really need to be, ten years to make it,
- 2:15Speaker 2: I feel like that's really real because I could have
- 2:18Speaker 2: been in the game. But I feel like now the
- 2:20Speaker 2: eyes are on me. I've worked up to this point
- 2:24Speaker 2: to where people are wanting to listen to a debut
- 2:29Speaker 2: solo album from Jayworthy. You know what I'm saying. I
- 2:32Speaker 2: got the history, I made, the moves, the pop out,
- 2:36Speaker 2: the collaboration albums, you know what I'm saying. So the
- 2:40Speaker 2: time is now we hear. I'm very proud of this
- 2:43Speaker 2: body of work, and I felt like, because it took
- 2:45Speaker 2: such a long time to put it together, it was
- 2:48Speaker 2: only right to give you all a double disc. You
- 2:52Speaker 2: know what I'm saying.
- 2:52Speaker 1: You've taken like such an interesting, I guess like approach
- 2:56Speaker 1: to the music game because you've always kind of been
- 2:58Speaker 1: like around and then you kind of turned that into
- 3:02Speaker 1: like this catalog of incredible music. Like when did you
- 3:06Speaker 1: kind of realize like you were onto something when it
- 3:08Speaker 1: came to just like collapping with producers and just like
- 3:11Speaker 1: reaching out to artists and being like yo, let's let's
- 3:13Speaker 1: get in.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Like when was the f Like, well, I think this.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I think when I wanted to do something different, because
- 3:19Speaker 2: I when I was doing Jayworthy, the only thing that
- 3:22Speaker 2: I had out was a tape with DJ Mustard and
- 3:24Speaker 2: that really wasn't my sound.
- 3:26Speaker 1: What year was that?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Ooh? That was probably twenty ten, And that's when Nima
- 3:30Speaker 2: came knocking on my door because you know what I'm saying.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I knew Nima was like, yo, I run dub CNN,
- 3:38Speaker 2: but I also have this distribution company called Empire, and
- 3:41Speaker 2: I'm like, damn, just from dropping this mixtape. So and
- 3:46Speaker 2: you know at this point, like I'm just one foot
- 3:48Speaker 2: in this, one foot in that, like I wasn't really
- 3:51Speaker 2: taking music too seriously. So yeah, that that uh yeah
- 4:00Speaker 2: when was that? That was twenty ten? What was the question?
- 4:03Speaker 1: I was just saying, like when did you kind of
- 4:04Speaker 1: like hit your stride where you were like okay, okay.
- 4:07Speaker 2: So so after all, right, that was Jayworthy. I wanted
- 4:10Speaker 2: to do something that that that wasn't really my sound.
- 4:13Speaker 2: So when I formed London Drugs with Sean, we actually
- 4:16Speaker 2: made a sound. I think that's very important for every
- 4:18Speaker 2: artist to have their own sound. And own identity that
- 4:22Speaker 2: led Alchemists to hitting me up, Carlo got Wings to
- 4:26Speaker 2: hitting me up, who else, Harry Fraud, Mugs all you know,
- 4:34Speaker 2: the list goes on. But yeah, that's that was the
- 4:37Speaker 2: turning point I think is when like Alchemists was like, Yo,
- 4:41Speaker 2: I want to do something with you, and then before
- 4:43Speaker 2: you know what, I have all these bodies of work
- 4:45Speaker 2: with with either rappers like Currency or laycoh. Yeah exactly.
- 4:51Speaker 1: So you think that it was the London drugs thing.
- 4:53Speaker 2: It was the London drugs thing that kicked it off
- 4:55Speaker 2: because people were, you know, listening to that and being
- 4:58Speaker 2: like they ain't heard nothing like, and then that just
- 5:01Speaker 2: led people to wanting to work with me. And then
- 5:03Speaker 2: before you know it, I don't even think I knew
- 5:05Speaker 2: I was like starting to trend because back then you
- 5:08Speaker 2: didn't see a lot of collaborative projects. There wasn't a
- 5:11Speaker 2: lot of like this rapper with this producer, you know
- 5:14Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it was really like I'm thinking that maybe Alchemists.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Alchemists and Domo Genesis and like Prodigy. I think like
- 5:25Speaker 2: after the Prodigy wanted was Domo.
- 5:27Speaker 1: But because what year was your first.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Fifteen?
- 5:32Speaker 1: I guess before that was Freddy and Madliba twenty fourteen.
- 5:36Speaker 2: There you go, So there you go.
- 5:38Speaker 1: But I think that was I mean, it's obviously all
- 5:40Speaker 1: a part of that.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Like that era era, you know what I mean. So yeah,
- 5:44Speaker 2: that led to the to this and then it's just like,
- 5:47Speaker 2: you know, being able to work with all these legendary producers.
- 5:50Speaker 2: It was nice to just be able to like form
- 5:53Speaker 2: something where I could collectively put everybody on one project.
- 5:58Speaker 1: You know, what was your initial link up with Yams?
- 6:02Speaker 1: Like explain y'all's genesis, y'all's relationship.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Yams was my boy, you know what I'm saying. We
- 6:07Speaker 2: met in Texas at south By Southwest.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Got into it. We got into a squabble I remember
- 6:15Speaker 2: at the Fader Fort with its like a legendary story.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And then you got into a squabble with not with me, no, no, no,
- 6:22Speaker 1: no together.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it was like a something broke out over there
- 6:26Speaker 2: and they were like, oh, the homie down, and you know,
- 6:28Speaker 2: he just took a liking to me. And then I, uh,
- 6:31Speaker 2: you know, went back to LA and then I did
- 6:34Speaker 2: this record and he put it like this is back
- 6:38Speaker 2: in like the tumblr days.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:40Speaker 2: So Yamborghini had the Yamborghini Tumbler and he put my
- 6:43Speaker 2: record on there and then that started getting motion, and
- 6:45Speaker 2: then blogs started picking me up. And then he was like, man, like,
- 6:49Speaker 2: you know, I think he should really like do this.
- 6:51Speaker 2: You know, this is fire. But back then, the goal
- 6:55Speaker 2: was to get Earl Swavey through the door. You know
- 6:57Speaker 2: what I'm saying. That was my little bro rescing peace.
- 7:00Speaker 2: And I was like, you know, focused on getting him
- 7:03Speaker 2: through the door. When he went to prison and came back,
- 7:08Speaker 2: my career kind of blossomed. So it was like tables
- 7:13Speaker 2: like it kind of you know, reversed.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Do you feel like because back then I feel like
- 7:18Speaker 1: we don't get it, like like Yams doesn't get enough.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I guess he had such a great year, like he
- 7:25Speaker 1: was such a great curator of like taste, Like you
- 7:27Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, Like I feel like a lot
- 7:28Speaker 1: of the stuff he touched, a lot of the people
- 7:30Speaker 1: he co signed, like went on to do such big things.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Man, yeah, I know he happy looking down because me
- 7:35Speaker 2: and him, like that's really how we connected, is just
- 7:37Speaker 2: like our love for music. He was like, you know
- 7:40Speaker 2: what I mean? And same with Cardo, Like Cardo hit
- 7:43Speaker 2: me cause he's like, you know, Yams was my boy.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Yams used to pull up and play me your stuff.
- 7:47Speaker 2: And then when me and Cardo LinkedIn, we realized, like,
- 7:51Speaker 2: I'm like Cardo talking about brother Lynch and Hollow Tip
- 7:55Speaker 2: and X Rated and kicked the sneak like you know,
- 8:00Speaker 2: Northern Cali, like from the Bay all the way to
- 8:03Speaker 2: Sack was like a huge influence for me when I was.
- 8:06Speaker 1: All that, all that black market records.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Market records, was this ship.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Season of the sickness.
- 8:13Speaker 2: All of that, you know, and shout outs to X Rated.
- 8:16Speaker 2: That's my boy man.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Such a dope dude. Man, I just had him on
- 8:18Speaker 1: the pot not too long.
- 8:19Speaker 2: He's great, great human being. Yeah, and uh that to me,
- 8:23Speaker 2: you know, like you know, when we were younger, we
- 8:25Speaker 2: pride ourselves on like kind of finding the like underground ship,
- 8:29Speaker 2: you know what I mean.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Now the X Rated tree, you'd be like, Yo, this
- 8:31Speaker 1: motherfucker's really got cutting records in prison.
- 8:34Speaker 2: In prison, and it was hard. So you know, when
- 8:37Speaker 2: I found out that Cardo was was into that, and
- 8:40Speaker 2: then he just really wanted to to work and we're
- 8:44Speaker 2: gonna do the tape. That's when I brought g Prico
- 8:46Speaker 2: in you know what I'm saying. I met G Perico.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Uh at my boy dub Quincy White.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Yeah, of course going he's alien.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Alien, you know. And we we walked. I walked from
- 9:00Speaker 2: you know, my hood from to Athens Park is real close,
- 9:05Speaker 2: so I walked over there and that's when I met
- 9:08Speaker 2: BG Perico for the first time. Worth Well, that's when
- 9:13Speaker 2: we first met. And then he ended up going to jail,
- 9:16Speaker 2: and I got a call from one of my homies
- 9:17Speaker 2: that was locked up in there with him and was like,
- 9:20Speaker 2: you know so and so, And when he was locked up,
- 9:24Speaker 2: I would start playing yams his music. He had this
- 9:27Speaker 2: song called Busting, So when he came home and then
- 9:30Speaker 2: I was with Earl, that's when we formed us a
- 9:32Speaker 2: trick and then that that song came out, and then
- 9:36Speaker 2: that's when me and freeway Rick really started, you know,
- 9:41Speaker 2: getting together and forming our business together.
- 9:44Speaker 1: And hey, we got to stop the interview to tell
- 9:46Speaker 1: you about our good folks. Odd Socks man. Now, these
- 9:48Speaker 1: are the odd Socks basics, ladies and gentlemen. Now, when

- 9:56Speaker 1: day I'm alive for the last five six years, I

- 10:05Speaker 1: if we're being honest, and the underwear game. You know,
- 10:07Speaker 1: a lot of times you'll hit Walmart, you'll hit Target,
- 10:10Speaker 1: you'll get some socks, you get some draws. They're affordable,
- 10:13Speaker 1: they end up with holes in them. They don't really
- 10:15Speaker 1: feel great. Not odd Socks, ladies and gentlemen. These odd

- 10:44Speaker 1: white legs. But it's so dope that, you know, I

- 11:18Speaker 1: Make sure you get some right now, odd socks dot Com.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Just get back to the interview.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yeah, the rest is history, man. So when you go
- 11:24Speaker 2: listen to Once upon a Time, man, there's a lot
- 11:26Speaker 2: of history on there. You know, freeway Rick narrated it.
- 11:29Speaker 2: He know me. You know, he's seen my whole come up,
- 11:35Speaker 2: and I you know, I'm a big movie guy. You know,
- 11:38Speaker 2: I don't know if anybody's seen the movie Once Upon
- 11:40Speaker 2: a Time in America, But of course you know what
- 11:43Speaker 2: I'm saying, that's where the aesthetic comes from.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Yeah, having him narrate obviously, you say, you guys have
- 11:51Speaker 1: businesses together. People don't know. Give me the history you
- 11:54Speaker 1: freeway Ricks relationship.
- 11:56Speaker 2: It's real crazy, man. At the time, you know, Uh,
- 12:00Speaker 2: I was living at Big Face House, Uh, games Brother
- 12:05Speaker 2: on Brazil and Wilmington, you know, the old Black Wall Street,
- 12:09Speaker 2: and uh, you know, I was trying to transition from
- 12:12Speaker 2: street life into just being more legit, and uh I
- 12:16Speaker 2: had got the idea after watching the movie Good Hair
- 12:20Speaker 2: by Chris Rock to uh to us to start selling hair,
- 12:25Speaker 2: to start like important weaves and selling Indian hair, you
- 12:28Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, because I'm Indian. And uh Rick
- 12:32Speaker 2: also was doing the same thing, and he had heard
- 12:35Speaker 2: about my name, and I was doing it like on
- 12:38Speaker 2: some baby boy ship pulling up to the beauty supply,
- 12:42Speaker 2: the spots being like popping the trunk like hey, no,
- 12:44Speaker 2: don't go in there, come shop with me. So anyways,
- 12:47Speaker 2: me and rick y'all doing that. Yeah, yeah, you guys
- 12:50Speaker 2: are going there, or yeah I got the loan, you
- 12:53Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, Yeah, yeah, yeah, So uh, me
- 12:56Speaker 2: and Rick we met up on I'm like, yeah, you know,
- 12:59Speaker 2: I'm Compton and he's like, oh, well, I'm in Carson.
- 13:03Speaker 2: I said, well, let's meet up right there with on
- 13:06Speaker 2: the ninety one freeway down Central right where like the
- 13:11Speaker 2: borderline of Carson and Compton are at. And I'm thinking
- 13:15Speaker 2: at the time, Rick gonna pull up, like, you know,
- 13:18Speaker 2: it's freeway, Rick, it's the Kingpin. I'm thinking he's gonna
- 13:21Speaker 2: pull up in a ben Lee or you know, Rose
- 13:25Speaker 2: Royce or whatever. I had no idea and he just
- 13:27Speaker 2: pulls up in his bucket, you know what I'm saying,
- 13:30Speaker 2: a little high and die. And at the time, it's
- 13:32Speaker 2: another crazy story. I had Tory Lanez with me and
- 13:35Speaker 2: I brought Tory Lanes for his first time to Compton
- 13:39Speaker 2: and he just rolling around with me and he wanted
- 13:42Speaker 2: to get back home. He living at Sean Kingston House
- 13:45Speaker 2: at the time. I remember this one was when he
- 13:47Speaker 2: was a songwriting or whatever. But I had him tipping
- 13:50Speaker 2: with me through the hood. So I'm like, we're gonna
- 13:52Speaker 2: go meet Freeway Rick. Freeway. Rick is like yeah, man,
- 13:56Speaker 2: so we chopping it up and he's like, man, I
- 13:57Speaker 2: gotta do a podcast. This is like on too, like
- 14:00Speaker 2: I don't even think like many podcasts were really even out.
- 14:04Speaker 2: And he's like, he's like, let's go up. He's like, man,
- 14:08Speaker 2: let me put some gas in your car and let's
- 14:10Speaker 2: go to Marino Valley and let's go do this podcast.
- 14:13Speaker 2: I'm like, all right, for sure, you know toy from Toronto.
- 14:17Speaker 2: He don't know what where we're going or whatever. This
- 14:19Speaker 2: is a mission hour and a half two hour drive.
- 14:25Speaker 2: He mad as a motherfucker. Man.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Now he's just stuck.
- 14:28Speaker 2: He just stuck and then we gotta go do a podcast.
- 14:31Speaker 2: I'll never forget that though, man, me and Tory still
- 14:35Speaker 2: joke about that. But that's when that relationship for him.
- 14:38Speaker 2: And then you know Rick scene where I was living,
- 14:41Speaker 2: and you know, knew that I was hungry and trying
- 14:44Speaker 2: to get about uh from my situation, just you know, elevating.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Me and him would link up every day with our
- 14:51Speaker 2: hair or we would go to Fairfax and we would
- 14:54Speaker 2: get a bunch of free clothes and then we would
- 14:56Speaker 2: come back to the hood and sell them. So, you know,
- 14:59Speaker 2: me and Rick, we started together, man, like for real.
- 15:03Speaker 1: All and it all started with hair.
- 15:04Speaker 2: It all started with hair. Wow.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, what's something about the hair industry that most
- 15:10Speaker 1: people don't know.
- 15:11Speaker 2: I don't know. I haven't been in it for so long.
- 15:14Speaker 1: So like, say, what what what would you flip a
- 15:16Speaker 1: weed for? Like what would it cost?
- 15:17Speaker 2: Would you be able to sell like a bundle was
- 15:19Speaker 2: like going for like one fifty or something like.
- 15:21Speaker 1: That's what it go for on the street.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Like it was, yeah, would you a hair or something
- 15:26Speaker 2: like that? And you would have to have like the
- 15:27Speaker 2: Remy or like the real like Remy virgin I think
- 15:31Speaker 2: it was called or like n Yeah. They would come
- 15:33Speaker 2: in bundles though, and you could buy them in like keys.
- 15:35Speaker 2: So it's funny that I was like dealing with Rick
- 15:37Speaker 2: and we're buying like KOs.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Of hair, So what's a kilo hair costs?
- 15:41Speaker 2: Back? Oh, I can't even remember, Like I remember the
- 15:44Speaker 2: bundles were like one fifty or something. But the money
- 15:47Speaker 2: was good. I made good money in it. And then
- 15:49Speaker 2: it just got oversaturated and the music took over, and
- 15:53Speaker 2: you know, my passion wasn't obviously selling hair, so and
- 15:57Speaker 2: then with Rick too, you know, we Rick's a hustler.
- 15:59Speaker 2: He like Rick was selling T shirts, hair, doing appearances, books,
- 16:04Speaker 2: were just moving all the time together. And then it
- 16:06Speaker 2: got so busy for him and so busy for me.
- 16:09Speaker 2: When you listen to the intro, you know what I mean,
- 16:11Speaker 2: he says something that touched me. It was like, you know,
- 16:14Speaker 2: he said so often. Me and Jay had a kind
- 16:18Speaker 2: of parted ways, but not on back bad terms, but
- 16:21Speaker 2: when we run into each other. We would see each
- 16:23Speaker 2: other in different cities and we embrace each other like
- 16:27Speaker 2: lost brothers because it was like damn, like here you are.
- 16:30Speaker 2: He might have an artist, or he might be dealing
- 16:33Speaker 2: with a boxer and here I am in a different
- 16:35Speaker 2: city and I'm doing a show or whatever, and yeah,
- 16:38Speaker 2: but that's my brother. Man. We still talk every day
- 16:41Speaker 2: and shout out to Freeway Rick. You know what I'm saying.
- 16:44Speaker 1: You have so much music, with so many producers. Who
- 16:49Speaker 1: would you say you got the best chemistry with?
- 16:52Speaker 2: Probably say Sean House because you know London drugs. Yeah, man,
- 16:57Speaker 2: we started together, we kind of made a sound together,
- 17:00Speaker 2: and then you know, yeah, that's why he's on nine.
- 17:05Speaker 2: He's on nine of the joints on Once upon a Time,
- 17:09Speaker 2: So that speaks first.
- 17:11Speaker 1: So when did you decide there's too much music I
- 17:14Speaker 1: gotta do a double disc?
- 17:16Speaker 2: Well, I just wanted to be able to There's just
- 17:19Speaker 2: too many different songs that I liked, and I was like,
- 17:22Speaker 2: I was just gonna put it all on one disc.
- 17:24Speaker 2: But I'm like, who am I I'm not. You know
- 17:26Speaker 2: a lot of big artists put out a double disc,
- 17:29Speaker 2: you know what I mean. So I was just I mean,
- 17:31Speaker 2: you know, the way people consume music these days is
- 17:35Speaker 2: be a lot to give thirty one records at a time.
- 17:37Speaker 2: So I did Disc one and then two weeks apart,
- 17:40Speaker 2: I did this too, but you listen to it. Like
- 17:43Speaker 2: I said, if you've ever seen the movie Once upon
- 17:46Speaker 2: a Time in America, it's like a four and a
- 17:48Speaker 2: half hour long movie. There's an intermission on disc too.
- 17:51Speaker 2: That's when the intermission starts. But I sequenced the album
- 17:55Speaker 2: from act one to act too. It's how you spoke
- 18:00Speaker 2: to listen to it. So if you if you fuck
- 18:02Speaker 2: with Jay Worthy and you like the album, go make
- 18:04Speaker 2: a playlist and let that ship run through you know
- 18:07Speaker 2: what I mean? Would? Uh?
- 18:09Speaker 1: Was it on purpose that most of the features are
- 18:11Speaker 1: on the second disc?
- 18:13Speaker 2: No?
- 18:13Speaker 1: Just did it just work out that way?
- 18:15Speaker 2: Is there more features on the second disc? Because I
- 18:18Speaker 2: feel like the first disc has quite it? I think
- 18:20Speaker 2: it's equally. I mean the first disc.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I have Quick Well, you know, I just looked because
- 18:26Speaker 1: I was looking at the playlist on Spotify, and the
- 18:28Speaker 1: only featured artists on the first disc or Quick and
- 18:30Speaker 1: turn on something.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Oh, but those are the features. But because everyone else
- 18:33Speaker 2: is primary, I got west Side Guns, so Boldie, James,
- 18:38Speaker 2: Larry June.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Jesus, Chrisy just a list of artists.
- 18:41Speaker 2: With Khalifa, E forty, Jim Jones.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Yeah, fucking Thundercat, Undercat.
- 18:48Speaker 2: George Clinton, Parliament, funking delic ice Tea, Mac Yeah, Marciana Yeah,
- 18:55Speaker 2: and shout outs to Wacko. You know, like I'm you
- 18:57Speaker 2: know me, I'm an A and R my el so
- 19:03Speaker 2: you know, I ain R my whole album. But Wacko
- 19:05Speaker 2: stepped in and uh he introduced me to Mac ten,
- 19:09Speaker 2: which me and Max became friends and asked my brother, now,
- 19:12Speaker 2: so that's who connected that dot. He also connected the
- 19:16Speaker 2: dot with Wiz for me, and he connected my favorite
- 19:20Speaker 2: record on this to iced Tea. You know what I'm
- 19:24Speaker 2: saying in that record right there, Uh it sounds like
- 19:28Speaker 2: it sounds like, uh, you know, it sounds like six o'clock,
- 19:33Speaker 2: six in the morning to me, So I called it
- 19:35Speaker 2: bis in the morning, and uh put Tea on that
- 19:38Speaker 2: and I love that verse. You know, I don't think
- 19:41Speaker 2: a lot of when do you see ice tea name
- 19:44Speaker 2: pop up on a feature list? I mean even Mac ten?
- 19:48Speaker 1: I mean I don't that's the one because Iced Teo
- 19:51Speaker 1: step out every once in a while. I feel like
- 19:52Speaker 1: Mac ten is very like.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Mac don't get get Yeah, he don't. He don't come
- 19:57Speaker 2: out for anybody. So, you know, Wacko put me with
- 20:00Speaker 2: Mac and then Mac took a liking to me, and
- 20:03Speaker 2: you know, we formed our own relationship and we've been
- 20:05Speaker 2: locked in ever since. But those those are the things
- 20:09Speaker 2: that like make me happy having Spice one. Spice one
- 20:12Speaker 2: is like in my top five.
- 20:14Speaker 1: So that was going to ask you about that because
- 20:16Speaker 1: Spice one is somebody who is so underappreciated when we
- 20:20Speaker 1: think of like hip hop in general. Some of the
- 20:23Speaker 1: hardest West Coast albums ever and some of the hardest
- 20:26Speaker 1: album covers of all ever.
- 20:28Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, you already know.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Man, want to give a shout out to slap Woods
- 20:31Speaker 1: for presenting the podcast only papers I smoke Man only
- 20:35Speaker 1: leafs that we let fly around here on the Blueleg
- 20:37Speaker 1: Cap podcast. We just did a crazy pool party with
- 20:39Speaker 1: them too. That was insane out here in La. The
- 20:42Speaker 1: shout out to slap Woods when I tell you, man quality,
- 20:45Speaker 1: They smoke so good, and they're called slap Woods because
- 20:50Speaker 1: they slap I know that's like their you know, their tagline,
- 20:54Speaker 1: but it's also the truth, all right, So look, go
- 20:56Speaker 1: follow them, Matt slap Woods. Make sure you hit their
- 20:58Speaker 1: website and if you're at your local smoke shop, if
- 21:01Speaker 1: you're your local store and you need some papers, get
- 21:05Speaker 1: you some slap Woods and you know, I think pretty
- 21:08Speaker 1: soon I want to do we are going to do
- 21:10Speaker 1: this pretty soon. I want to do a giveaway with
- 21:11Speaker 1: some Slapwood stuff, So be on the lookout for that.
- 21:15Speaker 1: We'll be announcing it on the podcast. We're gonna be
- 21:17Speaker 1: sending out obviously, you got to be of age sending
- 21:19Speaker 1: out a good box of these goodies. Oh the sweeping
- 21:22Speaker 1: and and cilgar wraps are fire. Slap woods man, make
- 21:24Speaker 1: sure you go show them some love. Slap woods dot com.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Follow him on Instagram at slap Woods. Let's get back
- 21:30Speaker 1: to the podcast. But you like like Spice one somehow,
- 21:33Speaker 1: Like I feel like we forget about him, Like he's
- 21:35Speaker 1: not talked about enough. Where's the ice the Spice one
- 21:39Speaker 1: feature come from?
- 21:40Speaker 2: Well, this is kind of crazy man. This dude his name,
- 21:46Speaker 2: he produced it. His name was never heard of. He
- 21:49Speaker 2: paid me for a feature to get on that beat.
- 21:53Speaker 2: And uh and then he was like, Yo, my pops
- 21:57Speaker 2: is homies with Spice one because when I heard the beat,
- 21:59Speaker 2: I'm like, remind me of some old Spice one ship.
- 22:01Speaker 2: And then he was like, yeah, I can, I can
- 22:05Speaker 2: get spice on it. And I'm like man, I'd be
- 22:07Speaker 2: chopping it up with spice here and there on it,
- 22:11Speaker 2: and he linked us together. Man, and then uh, I
- 22:14Speaker 2: put spice on it in the video. Yeah it's a
- 22:16Speaker 2: video and uh and then I went and got bun
- 22:19Speaker 2: Be on it because you know that's my brother right there.
- 22:22Speaker 2: And uh, I just thought I called the song Jive
- 22:24Speaker 2: ninety five because it reminded me in the era when
- 22:27Speaker 2: like all these rappers were on jive.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Remember, yeah, Jive was crazy.
- 22:31Speaker 2: They had all the Bay Spice one was Jive too short,
- 22:34Speaker 2: too short, forty lit and UGK you know K, and
- 22:41Speaker 2: they had all the good soundtracks.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I think their offices. They had an office in the Bay.
- 22:46Speaker 1: They had to back in the day, they had one
- 22:48Speaker 1: in San Francisco.
- 22:49Speaker 2: They had to because everybody came out on jives. So
- 22:51Speaker 2: I just said, Jive ninety five, you know what I'm saying.
- 22:54Speaker 2: And so what did you? Did?
- 22:55Speaker 1: You end up giving the dude's money back? Who paid
- 22:56Speaker 1: you for the future?
- 22:57Speaker 2: You know what? Actually we ain't even worked that part out.
- 23:00Speaker 1: You're like, I'm gonna take the song and your money.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Crazy cold game man. All right though, Man, you're getting
- 23:08Speaker 2: great exposure and uh, he's happy for it.
- 23:11Speaker 1: You know what I mean, are you gonna get you
- 23:12Speaker 1: got even another record?
- 23:13Speaker 2: Now? Oh for sure, Yeah I own another record definitely.
- 23:17Speaker 1: He's like, you know, I like this so much, Yeah,
- 23:19Speaker 1: put this on there.
- 23:20Speaker 2: But he knew, you know what I'm saying, Like, yeah,
- 23:23Speaker 2: So it was It was cool.
- 23:26Speaker 1: In an era where so many like of the behind
- 23:28Speaker 1: the scenes guys, I want to be in front of
- 23:31Speaker 1: the camera and want to do podcasts and just you know,
- 23:36Speaker 1: go and sit down on vlad. You got a guy
- 23:37Speaker 1: like Wacko, who is the name we always hear about
- 23:41Speaker 1: in l A. And I don't think it's like really
- 23:43Speaker 1: talked about enough. Like the moves he's able to kind
- 23:45Speaker 1: of help within the.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Somebody right over there. I don't know if you want.
- 23:49Speaker 1: To, but but I just kind of speak to like
- 23:53Speaker 1: his importance in the city and just like some of
- 23:55Speaker 1: the stuff he's able to.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Kind of well see Whacko, Like people always ask, they like,
- 24:00Speaker 2: this is Wacko? Your manager is Wacko? I said, Wacko
- 24:04Speaker 2: is one of my best friends. He's my business partner.
- 24:08Speaker 2: But it's funny, I said, we wear different hats. Now
- 24:10Speaker 2: Wacko is involved. Wacko is a filmmaker. You know, Wacko
- 24:14Speaker 2: is an artist. Wacko is an entrepreneur. Wacko put out
- 24:18Speaker 2: Cali Swag District and broke the record, teach me how
- 24:21Speaker 2: to douggy along with many other things. With's helping form
- 24:26Speaker 2: meet the Whoops with me. So you know, Wacko is
- 24:31Speaker 2: just one of those dudes that what I respect about
- 24:34Speaker 2: Wacko is like this man, he don't want the fame,
- 24:37Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. He out here to just
- 24:39Speaker 2: push the culture and be involved in dope things and
- 24:44Speaker 2: make good artwork and a real doc connector like myself.
- 24:49Speaker 2: But it's funny though, because sometimes we'll go out to events,
- 24:53Speaker 2: right and like say, I'll be with Wacko and we're
- 24:55Speaker 2: going to a movie premiere or whatever, and you know,
- 24:58Speaker 2: he represents himself and sometimes I'll be like, yeah, I
- 25:02Speaker 2: managed Wacko. And then sometimes will be somewhere and I'll
- 25:05Speaker 2: be like, oh, yeah, you need to talk to my
- 25:08Speaker 2: manager Wacko. So we uh we trade hats man. But
- 25:13Speaker 2: a great person, great individual, and he deserves flowers. It's
- 25:18Speaker 2: a part of so many, uh so many great things
- 25:21Speaker 2: that have happened in the city of Compton and La period.
- 25:24Speaker 2: You know what I mean real doc connector man kind
- 25:26Speaker 2: of like myself.
- 25:27Speaker 1: You know, you said, like obviously you're You're in A
- 25:30Speaker 1: and R. And I feel like so many people tap
- 25:33Speaker 1: in with you because of your taste and your ear.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Huh is because you helped A and R the Troop
- 25:40Speaker 1: Ofcabra album, which I thought was one of the most
- 25:42Speaker 1: slept on projects from Was it last year?
- 25:44Speaker 2: Yeah? It was last year, man.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Last year Quick Problem album was fucking fire.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Man man a great album.
- 25:51Speaker 1: But I'm just curious, like for you is like when
- 25:52Speaker 1: it comes to like putting that hat on, like when
- 25:54Speaker 1: did you kind of understand? Like damn, Like I kind
- 25:56Speaker 1: of got some I got, I kind of got the juice.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Low key.
- 26:00Speaker 2: I look at it like this, right, if you look
- 26:02Speaker 2: at my career, all the things, all the projects that
- 26:06Speaker 2: I put together, they were I said, man, I need
- 26:08Speaker 2: to do one with currency I ain't R and that
- 26:11Speaker 2: me and Larry June, I ain't or all the features
- 26:13Speaker 2: on that, me grabbing Priko for g Worthy, etcetera, Etceterright,
- 26:19Speaker 2: So I feel like, you know, me putting it introducing
- 26:23Speaker 2: Alchemists and Larry together. Now they got a whole franchise.
- 26:27Speaker 2: So I was like, damn, I'm always kind of been
- 26:29Speaker 2: at A and R and Jason Martin and Quick gave
- 26:33Speaker 2: me my first time to like wear that hat officially,
- 26:36Speaker 2: and then that open doors for me later to start
- 26:39Speaker 2: working with Terrorist Martin on an RN and YG and
- 26:43Speaker 2: the list goes on. So you know, you know, it's
- 26:48Speaker 2: just something I got a good year and I love
- 26:50Speaker 2: music and I just want to see people that should
- 26:53Speaker 2: make music together rock, you know what I'm saying.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Yeah, who's been like, because I feel like you've also
- 26:59Speaker 1: worked with so many underrated artists out of the city
- 27:02Speaker 1: that still maybe not necessarily have gotten their flowers as
- 27:05Speaker 1: much as like a guy like TF, like dope.
- 27:08Speaker 2: TF one of the best to me, YEAHF one of
- 27:13Speaker 2: the best.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Another one of those guys who I feel like, you know,
- 27:16Speaker 1: quietly got a crazy catalog.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Man for sure, you know, And and now him and
- 27:22Speaker 2: Harry Fraud dropping the project, which is going to be crazy.
- 27:25Speaker 2: So it's just things like that, Like I've always just
- 27:28Speaker 2: wanted to see different people work with different people.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Is there anybody though from LA you feel like that
- 27:35Speaker 1: you just kind of have your eye on. Either it
- 27:36Speaker 1: could be someone you work with, someone who you haven't
- 27:38Speaker 1: worked with that's young that's on the come up and
- 27:40Speaker 1: you're like, Yo, that dude's got it.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Let me think, let me think here. I love Nano Okay,
- 27:51Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. I love I mean what
- 27:57Speaker 2: else that's just really dope out here, just push and
- 28:00Speaker 2: doing that ship. I love all my group meet the Whoops.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I think those dudes right there are incredible. But I'm
- 28:08Speaker 2: trying to think outside the box, just like of somebody
- 28:14Speaker 2: that's not so known that I would that I would
- 28:18Speaker 2: want to work with. Damn. Oh, you know what. I
- 28:25Speaker 2: got to give it up for my boy for Casso
- 28:27Speaker 2: Man Picasso, one man out of Compton, a conscious rapper,
- 28:32Speaker 2: really dope, like real really like a real hip hop MC.
- 28:38Speaker 2: But you know from our section, and uh, I think
- 28:42Speaker 2: he I featured him on my album. He's on a
- 28:45Speaker 2: song with me and Weside. Yeah.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Yeah. For you, if you were to go back through
- 28:53Speaker 1: your catalog, what do you think is your take away?
- 28:55Speaker 1: This this once upon time?
- 28:57Speaker 2: Huh?
- 28:57Speaker 1: What do you think is your best album? Active Active
- 29:00Speaker 1: twenty eighteen.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Twenty Well, we put it out twenty eighteen on digital,
- 29:05Speaker 2: but it came out on Fools Gold in twenty fifteen,
- 29:08Speaker 2: and the original that was on fools gold Gold. Yeah.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Shout out to a.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Track, yep, shout outs to a track. You know what
- 29:15Speaker 2: I'm saying, A tracks of g though. Yeah, that's crazy,
- 29:18Speaker 2: it is crazy, and y'all, y'all see, I got an
- 29:21Speaker 2: article coming out and we talk about that whole shit
- 29:25Speaker 2: and how that unfolded. But yeah, man, a track yep,
- 29:31Speaker 2: So that's twenty fifteen. That's my baby active. I took
- 29:34Speaker 2: like three years to make that, so that, yeah, I
- 29:38Speaker 2: would say.
- 29:38Speaker 1: That, it's kind of like you're ellmatic.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's my illmatic to me, but this is like
- 29:42Speaker 2: the that if that's illmatic, then this is all eyes
- 29:46Speaker 2: on me. I repent that.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Yeah, kind of jumped rappers in the references. I thought
- 29:52Speaker 1: you were gonna go like this is my It was written.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Right right right, right, right right right, But it's like,
- 29:58Speaker 2: but it's like I'm paying, I'm paying how I'm into
- 30:00Speaker 2: the double disc era? Man, you know, like you from
- 30:03Speaker 2: my era, we don't see that a lot.
- 30:05Speaker 1: No, Yeah, I'm thinking like obviously all eyes on me
- 30:07Speaker 1: life after Death. But then like eight Ball had lost.
- 30:11Speaker 2: And that came out.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Triple Triple CD, yeah, and.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Then uh m P the last and we had the
- 30:19Speaker 2: bone Thugs one, but people forget about this one part
- 30:21Speaker 2: of war Element of Surprise.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, there's some great double I'm trying to
- 30:27Speaker 1: think what I'm forgetting?
- 30:28Speaker 2: What about jay Z? Didn't he do a no, there's
- 30:31Speaker 2: a blueprint? And no it was one and two? I forget.
- 30:34Speaker 2: I don't know why I thought that.
- 30:36Speaker 1: But was that the crazy double disc? Oh? Obviously diplomatic community.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Great, that's a great one too, diplomatic.
- 30:44Speaker 1: I was just bumping that ship yesterday.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Somebody I loved that album. Oh yeah, yeah, that's my ship.
- 30:48Speaker 2: I still slapped that faithfully phenomenal. It's crazy, changed my
- 30:54Speaker 2: whole ship in high school. That was like it came
- 30:58Speaker 2: to I came to school the next day. And the
- 31:00Speaker 2: pink T shirt. For sure.
- 31:01Speaker 1: How do you end up linking with because you also
- 31:04Speaker 1: have a full album or body of work that you
- 31:07Speaker 1: completed with George Clinton? Yeah, now he's on the album.
- 31:10Speaker 2: He's on the album.
- 31:12Speaker 1: No one's able to just like connect with George Clinton.
- 31:14Speaker 1: That's a diabolical.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Yes, you know. Yeah, he he reached out to me
- 31:20Speaker 2: and he was just like two pie's in a pod
- 31:22Speaker 2: different so so he was just listening to you and yeah,
- 31:26Speaker 2: but he would he'd tapped in with me before that. Uh,
- 31:30Speaker 2: he started following me on Twitter like back when I
- 31:33Speaker 2: probably put out active, so he's probably like, you know, seeing, okay,
- 31:38Speaker 2: this is a new dude that's coming with the funk
- 31:41Speaker 2: and pushing the genre. And uh, he might have been
- 31:44Speaker 2: paying attention to what I did with Dame Funk. I'm
- 31:47Speaker 2: not sure, but he hit me up and was like
- 31:50Speaker 2: two peas in a pod different and then the next thing,
- 31:52Speaker 2: you know, he invited me to his show, and that's
- 31:56Speaker 2: when we got to hang out. Uh that's today we know.
- 32:01Speaker 2: We went to the movie premiere, I think, and I
- 32:04Speaker 2: went with Wackle. That's when Wackle connected the dot with
- 32:06Speaker 2: Wiz Khalifa for me and then uh as far as
- 32:12Speaker 2: uh George and me, Yeah, we hung out. It was cool,
- 32:15Speaker 2: and then he invited me to the next show and
- 32:17Speaker 2: that's where when I met Quick. And then you know,
- 32:21Speaker 2: George was like, you got to listen to this kid
- 32:24Speaker 2: ship and that's what put Quick on my radar, and
- 32:27Speaker 2: you know, the rest is history.
- 32:29Speaker 1: When you're in the studio with George Clinton, yea, does
- 32:31Speaker 1: he wear shoes?
- 32:33Speaker 2: You do?
- 32:34Speaker 1: I always wonder because I always hear the old funk
- 32:35Speaker 1: dudes like this, like like record with no shoes on because.
- 32:38Speaker 2: They feel grounded.
- 32:40Speaker 1: They feel like the funk comes from the ground. So
- 32:43Speaker 1: I got a random question. I heard that Herbrick James
- 32:45Speaker 1: recorded with no shoes.
- 32:46Speaker 2: Really. I mean, if you go look at like George
- 32:49Speaker 2: Clinton's interview with David Letterman, he like comes out there barefoot,
- 32:54Speaker 2: just like sitting cross legged and ship like that, I
- 32:57Speaker 2: would want.
- 32:57Speaker 1: To do mushrooms or just something like, Yo, George, what
- 32:59Speaker 1: were you doing in the seventies, Let's do it together
- 33:02Speaker 1: right now?
- 33:02Speaker 2: The aunt peyote Yo. The amount of game and knowledge
- 33:06Speaker 2: you again from George is crazy, and the stories it
- 33:09Speaker 2: was great. I mean we spent a week together.
- 33:12Speaker 1: How many songs did y'all do?
- 33:13Speaker 2: We did a whole.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Album and ten piece eight piece piece.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Like ten to twelve, and just to give you all
- 33:21Speaker 2: some game. Because his grandson is like a fan of
- 33:26Speaker 2: like what I doing with London drugs, he was like, yo,
- 33:30Speaker 2: I took a chance on this too. So I came
- 33:33Speaker 2: to George with me and Sean had already did all
- 33:36Speaker 2: the parts, and he was like, Yo, these are the
- 33:38Speaker 2: songs that George owns outright. So we just did what
- 33:42Speaker 2: we do with London drugs. We looped them. And then
- 33:45Speaker 2: I came to George and he couldn't believe it, and
- 33:48Speaker 2: then I got him to like rego over the classes.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Oh shit, So you guys were able to kind of
- 33:53Speaker 1: like so his grandson tapped in and was like, hey, guys,
- 33:59Speaker 1: these are the songs you don't have to worry about clearing.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Yes, so original, So flip them sample downs like an
- 34:05Speaker 2: exact It sounds like the original Parliament Funkadelic, George Clinton,
- 34:10Speaker 2: your favorite ones. I'm not going to tell you.
- 34:12Speaker 1: So Sean was able to kind of like just do
- 34:14Speaker 1: what he does.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Sean did what he did, and I did all my verses,
- 34:18Speaker 2: and then I came in there with George and I
- 34:20Speaker 2: had George go over his classics and ad lyrics or
- 34:25Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. And then he.
- 34:27Speaker 1: Tripping when you guys brought that to him on a platter, like.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Yo, he was tripping, and I was like, damn, I'm like,
- 34:34Speaker 2: you never know how that's gonna work, yeah.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Because he might be like, yo, what the fuck did this?
- 34:38Speaker 2: Like, you know, let's make some new shit. He said
- 34:41Speaker 2: to me, this is all I've ever wanted somebody to do.
- 34:44Speaker 2: And I couldn't believe it, and I was like, oh, yeah,
- 34:46Speaker 2: this is really my big bro, Like he get it.
- 34:48Speaker 2: So we did it and he loved it. And I'm
- 34:51Speaker 2: not kidding you for like the like last like we
- 34:54Speaker 2: did that like probably you know the album's gonna come
- 34:57Speaker 2: out twenty twenty six, but we did that. Like that's
- 35:00Speaker 2: you know, sick, like eight months ago or something like that,
- 35:03Speaker 2: and he's still talking about it, man, And I'm not.
- 35:07Speaker 2: If you guys think that the features are crazy on
- 35:11Speaker 2: Once upon a Time, wait till you see the features
- 35:14Speaker 2: on this.
- 35:14Speaker 1: Yeah, you kind of open yourself up to a whole
- 35:16Speaker 1: new world of like artists who might I could get
- 35:19Speaker 1: the George Clinton and they'd.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Be like, oh.
- 35:21Speaker 1: It feels like a Snoop Dogg feature. Just so we
- 35:24Speaker 1: it feels like it feels like Snoops on the album.
- 35:27Speaker 1: It feels like so swoops on the George Clinton.
- 35:31Speaker 2: ALP.
- 35:31Speaker 1: That's tight fire. Hey, we gotta wrap up this interview
- 35:35Speaker 1: another one presented by Hardan Baby you already know what
- 35:38Speaker 1: it is. Shout out to Hardeen for presenting another episode

- 36:34Speaker 1: And you know we only rock with the premium the best,

- 37:16Speaker 2: another another person that connected that dot too, you know,
- 37:19Speaker 2: because you know Wacko see me moving and do so
- 37:22Speaker 2: many things. It's hard to like really like, you know,
- 37:25Speaker 2: be able to. What Wacko was able to do is
- 37:28Speaker 2: like tap me in with the O g's you know.
- 37:31Speaker 2: And that's what I love, you know what I'm saying.
- 37:33Speaker 2: I got all the young dudes, I got all the guys,
- 37:36Speaker 2: the Griselda, the Larry, He's the this and that. But
- 37:40Speaker 2: it's like the legends, Snoop man, come on, man, but yeah,
- 37:46Speaker 2: that that record right there, me Snoop and George. I mean,
- 37:52Speaker 2: it's crazy it's crazy. That's all I'm gonna say for you.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Uh. You know, you have like a kind of like
- 37:58Speaker 1: a trailer to your album. I guess I would call you.
- 38:02Speaker 2: I have two things. I got one which is like
- 38:05Speaker 2: Rick and me were in the La River and he's
- 38:08Speaker 2: doing the intro narrating and telling my life story for me.
- 38:12Speaker 2: But then I also have a documentary trailer which is
- 38:15Speaker 2: about to come out probably we got these edits right,
- 38:19Speaker 2: hopefully by the time this Brick magazine drops on in
- 38:23Speaker 2: the news stands, because they just announced yesterday. I got
- 38:26Speaker 2: the cover of Brick magazine and we did a documentary
- 38:29Speaker 2: with it, and it just it's got.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Like a lot of people talking about you. Everybody from
- 38:33Speaker 1: like Antmark Herot's like mugs and on and on.
- 38:36Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, a lot of legends and they're just
- 38:39Speaker 2: you know, I've been outside for a while and I
- 38:41Speaker 2: got a lot of connections and know a lot of people.
- 38:43Speaker 2: And the whole premise of the docu was like, I
- 38:46Speaker 2: don't speak, everybody just tells their story for me, you know.
- 38:49Speaker 2: And then there's a lot of archival footage and you know, what.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Was it like for you? Because would you say, like, uh,
- 38:56Speaker 1: when you had kind of first started to kind of
- 38:58Speaker 1: get like a itch to.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Do the music.
- 39:00Speaker 1: What year was that? Not even like recording, like were
- 39:03Speaker 1: you just like yo, I want to be around this shit.
- 39:05Speaker 2: I want to tell you this. I'll say this. I
- 39:07Speaker 2: always was like in high school, we were making music,
- 39:10Speaker 2: you know, like you I think my early beginnings, like
- 39:14Speaker 2: I was running around and I was making music with
- 39:17Speaker 2: my homies, and and my homies were tied in with
- 39:20Speaker 2: like the Project Blowed and the Good Life and just
- 39:23Speaker 2: different shit like that and Living Legends whole yeah, whole
- 39:29Speaker 2: other shit. But this was like early on, like I'm
- 39:31Speaker 2: talking like thirteen, I was rapping, like was putting tapes
- 39:34Speaker 2: out in high school. That's how I came to meet
- 39:37Speaker 2: like my homies from my hood like Ram and H
- 39:42Speaker 2: the Black Text and Faux Band and everybody like that.
- 39:45Speaker 2: Rest in Peace. So I lost my knack for music
- 39:50Speaker 2: when I figured out, like you know, it was kind
- 39:53Speaker 2: of like this like at the time, you know, when
- 39:56Speaker 2: Game came out and like everybody said he brought the
- 39:58Speaker 2: West Coast back, it was like my circle of frames
- 40:03Speaker 2: were like this is like we were trying to piggyback
- 40:05Speaker 2: off of that and like be like all right, some
- 40:07Speaker 2: shit Finna Go and the dude that I was making,
- 40:10Speaker 2: who's my brother Ram? You know, he had a lot
- 40:13Speaker 2: going on for kids, he cutting hair and it was
- 40:16Speaker 2: just slow motion.
- 40:17Speaker 1: And now, yeah, because that game comes out, and then
- 40:19Speaker 1: there's like the whole like New West movement. You know,
- 40:22Speaker 1: there's there's Glasses, Rockstar, There's like all this shit that
- 40:25Speaker 1: starts kind of moving around, and like then I read like,
- 40:28Speaker 1: obviously Nipsey's going crazy. And then there was like this
- 40:31Speaker 1: weird like I don't know if you remember, like when
- 40:32Speaker 1: there was like the New West movie, the New West
- 40:35Speaker 1: resentment towards the old heads because nobody.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Knows they weren't like like all right GM alone and
- 40:40Speaker 2: like all of them were like these they don't fuck
- 40:42Speaker 2: with us, they don't support us, and all that shit.
- 40:44Speaker 1: Nipsey I got an interview with Nipsey where Nipsey was like,
- 40:46Speaker 1: because you know Nipsey, I think Nipsey caught.
- 40:48Speaker 2: Out dre at the time, really crazy. I remember all
- 40:51Speaker 2: that that. That was like the New West Movement, and
- 40:54Speaker 2: I was around for all of that.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Black Wall Street had fifty million artists.
- 40:58Speaker 2: Man, it was crazy. Yeah, I remember it.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Around the boy they signed My Boy from Arizona juice.
- 41:03Speaker 2: I think I started looking and you know, you mind you,
- 41:07Speaker 2: I'm seventeen eighteen at the time. I think I just
- 41:09Speaker 2: jumped in the street life, man, and I didn't What
- 41:12Speaker 2: was it like being.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Around that era, man? Because that was like an era
- 41:15Speaker 1: that like, you know, that era.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Was cool, man, because everybody was working together. There was
- 41:20Speaker 2: a it was a great time for the West as
- 41:22Speaker 2: far as new artists. You know what I'm saying. You
- 41:24Speaker 2: had Like these are the names that I remember very
- 41:28Speaker 2: very much, so Disco Problem, bad Luck, Demani. You know
- 41:34Speaker 2: what I'm saying that it was so tough, man, man,
- 41:36Speaker 2: come on, bad Luck one of the ones. You know what,
- 41:39Speaker 2: what's my brother's name? Man, while he gonna kill me?
- 41:44Speaker 1: Bishop Lamar was Josh.
- 41:45Speaker 2: Lamar was dope, k boy, you know what I'm saying. Yeah,
- 41:50Speaker 2: like all these cats, you know what I'm saying, We're
- 41:53Speaker 2: doing their thing and it was it was cool. Now,
- 41:56Speaker 2: mind you. Mac Ten went in and fucked with Glasses.
- 41:59Speaker 2: So he was one of the older dudes from that
- 42:01Speaker 2: era that was. Now you got to remember, I'm younger.
- 42:04Speaker 2: I'm way younger than Glasses and all these dudes. So
- 42:08Speaker 2: I'm like, at this time, I'm still a teenager and stuff.
- 42:11Speaker 2: But for me, you know, in my in my neighborhood
- 42:14Speaker 2: and stuff, I just you know, it was more influenced
- 42:17Speaker 2: to take a different path.
- 42:19Speaker 1: And j Rock too, is that in that timeframe, you know?
- 42:22Speaker 2: Yeah, So it wasn't for me, like you know, I
- 42:25Speaker 2: fucked off for ten years and just was in the streets.
- 42:28Speaker 2: And then what brought me back to wanting to wrap
- 42:32Speaker 2: and be creative was coming on Fairfax and meeting Anmar
- 42:36Speaker 2: and meeting Casey and meeting Tyler and all that before
- 42:40Speaker 2: like like odd futures just getting formed. And now I've
- 42:42Speaker 2: seen that. Now I'm meeting Bobby and Ben hundreds and.
- 42:46Speaker 1: It's like a peak Fairfax days, peak Fairfax days.
- 42:49Speaker 2: I was there from the beginning of it. So that
- 42:52Speaker 2: inspired me to be a creative again. And that's when
- 42:55Speaker 2: I was talking about that tape of mustard. I pressed
- 42:58Speaker 2: up CDs and my home homie was like, who was
- 43:01Speaker 2: up on Fairfax? He was like, instead of putting your
- 43:04Speaker 2: CDs in the swap meets and the liquor stores, bring
- 43:08Speaker 2: it up on Fairfax. And those kids took a liking
- 43:11Speaker 2: to my ship and they fucked with me. So it
- 43:13Speaker 2: was my young Homemi.
- 43:14Speaker 1: And those are all the cool kids.
- 43:15Speaker 2: You know, they were all the cool kids at that
- 43:19Speaker 2: and that's how I got immersed in that, and that
- 43:21Speaker 2: like reminded me back when I was a kid in
- 43:23Speaker 2: Vancouver and and like you know what I'm saying, I
- 43:27Speaker 2: came up and like I was telling you on the
- 43:29Speaker 2: underground hip hop, the graffiti to skateboarding. So it brought
- 43:32Speaker 2: me back and realized I am an artist. I am
- 43:36Speaker 2: I am supposed to be here and supposed to do that.
- 43:38Speaker 2: So that gave me my second win. And Casey Veggie
- 43:42Speaker 2: shout out to Casey he just dropped a single featuring me.
- 43:45Speaker 2: And that's full circle moment because Casey was in high
- 43:49Speaker 2: school man, and this dude was killing it. Man, odd
- 43:52Speaker 2: future was killing it. And you know I was running
- 43:56Speaker 2: around with Casey and going worldwide and.
- 43:59Speaker 1: He was like I feel like AC and in the Bay,
- 44:01Speaker 1: I am Sue. Don't get talked enough about. Oh yeah,
- 44:04Speaker 1: able to do kind of like h like HBK in
- 44:06Speaker 1: the Bay, but like I am Sue and like Casey
- 44:08Speaker 1: Veggie's and like what they did for that era.
- 44:11Speaker 2: Yeah, man doesn't get is a legend. He went from
- 44:14Speaker 2: being broke because Casey was there with Earl and Tyler
- 44:19Speaker 2: and then he went to be with Dom and then
- 44:21Speaker 2: he just is his own entity. But it's just a
- 44:23Speaker 2: full circle moment, you know what I'm saying. And that's
- 44:26Speaker 2: why I got my billboard up on Fairfax right now
- 44:29Speaker 2: on Rosewood and Fairfax, right above the old hundred store,
- 44:33Speaker 2: because it just it was like, damn, you know, I'm
- 44:36Speaker 2: looking at my young homies, maked and.
- 44:38Speaker 1: What's there now Dave's Hot chickens.
- 44:40Speaker 2: And Dave's Hot chicken is gone now? Yeah? You know,
- 44:45Speaker 2: yeah that Fairfax died man as far as like, you know.
- 44:48Speaker 1: They got a good burner spot over their trophy.
- 44:51Speaker 2: That one, yeah ran And you know what I ran
- 44:53Speaker 2: into over there with sour milk. I was riding my
- 44:56Speaker 2: bike and I was like checked out, coming to go
- 44:58Speaker 2: see my billboard, and he's.
- 45:00Speaker 1: He's probably running or eating.
- 45:01Speaker 2: No, yeah, he went. He said he drove there just
- 45:03Speaker 2: to eat and he's got to come in there. And
- 45:05Speaker 2: I'm like, man, I've been dealing with cholesterol issues. But
- 45:08Speaker 2: I said, all right, you know what, let me try.
- 45:11Speaker 2: It was an incredible burger.
- 45:13Speaker 1: And what is going on with Meet the woops Man, Meet.
- 45:16Speaker 2: The Wolves Man? We got it. We got a deal
- 45:18Speaker 2: in place. You know what I'm saying, Uh, yeah, you know,
- 45:22Speaker 2: we gotta.
- 45:23Speaker 1: While he's going crazy with Cactus Jack, you're going you.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Got chef boy going crazy? Come on, yeah, but we
- 45:30Speaker 2: got you know, we got a deal in place with
- 45:33Speaker 2: a major. I don't want to let the cat out
- 45:36Speaker 2: the bag, but yeah, is that?
- 45:38Speaker 1: Is that a project that you guys already finished?
- 45:40Speaker 2: Her hundred percent produced by hit Boy? Yeah, it's finished,
- 45:44Speaker 2: and that's all I can say about that. It's finished.
- 45:47Speaker 2: We've just been pashing out the last bit of the terms.
- 45:52Speaker 1: And have you been able to chop it up recently
- 45:55Speaker 1: with it all? Because obviously yeah, hell yeah.
- 45:59Speaker 2: I talked to just to put him up. You know,
- 46:01Speaker 2: he's busy and moving, but you know, you can. He
- 46:04Speaker 2: congratulated me on my new album and he told me
- 46:07Speaker 2: he loved the aesthetic and the direction that I'm going in,
- 46:10Speaker 2: and you know, like he also see what I'm doing
- 46:12Speaker 2: with George Clinton and he's like wow, like you like
- 46:16Speaker 2: you know, the King of p funk like you know,
- 46:18Speaker 2: so he he loved what I'm doing.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Man, crazy you had Snoop and George Clintons.
- 46:23Speaker 2: Man, man, I need I need you to pull through
- 46:25Speaker 2: for that, for that, for Uncle George and me man.
- 46:28Speaker 2: But now that's my brother man. When you know, he
- 46:31Speaker 2: busy and he moving. But when the time is right,
- 46:33Speaker 2: I'm sure it all come together.
- 46:36Speaker 1: What do you think is the most the biggest misconception
- 46:39Speaker 1: about you that people are miss have misunderstood.
- 46:41Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I think, like you know that
- 46:43Speaker 2: they love to judge a book by its cover, or
- 46:45Speaker 2: they might go look on the internet and see this
- 46:48Speaker 2: or see that, or I don't know, but I'm like,
- 46:50Speaker 2: don't get me fucked up. But the thing is, I
- 46:52Speaker 2: don't really have to speak, like the street's gonna let
- 46:55Speaker 2: you know. Everybody will let you know. And it's like,
- 46:58Speaker 2: you know, we in this internet age where like people
- 47:01Speaker 2: just get on there and say everything or say anything.
- 47:04Speaker 2: And it's like, you know, I'm a little bit older too,
- 47:07Speaker 2: so I've been around, so I don't know. For the
- 47:10Speaker 2: most part, all I know and all I receive is love,
- 47:13Speaker 2: you know.
- 47:13Speaker 1: But you know, and you're everywhere. I feel like I
- 47:15Speaker 1: feel like any time I go anywhere, you're there. Yeah,
- 47:18Speaker 1: I'm there, damn fool Like you must not. You don't
- 47:20Speaker 1: have kids.
- 47:21Speaker 2: That's why I don't got kids.
- 47:23Speaker 1: But Also, I don't go out that much, but when
- 47:25Speaker 1: I go out, you're there.
- 47:26Speaker 2: You name somebody, though, Like I've been there from the
- 47:28Speaker 2: beginning of like bro I was putting Griselda in twenty sixteen,
- 47:33Speaker 2: we met at Alchemist's house. I was there, I met Yams,
- 47:37Speaker 2: and then from the start of the ASAP, I was
- 47:40Speaker 2: there with Odd Future, and then when they was just bubbling,
- 47:43Speaker 2: like I just been around and know anybody. I was
- 47:46Speaker 2: running around with Dot when tde formed and he had
- 47:50Speaker 2: me and the homies everywhere to pimb A Butterfly and
- 47:54Speaker 2: you know, good kid, Mad City. So it's just like, yeah,
- 47:57Speaker 2: I've been around for a minute. And before that it
- 47:59Speaker 2: was with Sugar and Brick Squad and you know what
- 48:03Speaker 2: I'm saying, and and Big Face and Chuck and it's like,
- 48:08Speaker 2: so you know, you get you got all this under
- 48:10Speaker 2: your belt. And then it's like, now that's what I'm saying.
- 48:12Speaker 2: It's like, once upon a time, you got the doc.
- 48:14Speaker 2: You got people gonna do their history and learn and
- 48:17Speaker 2: figure it out for themselves, you know. But I don't
- 48:19Speaker 2: really got too much to say. Man, I come with
- 48:22Speaker 2: peace and love, and I think you know, uh, if
- 48:26Speaker 2: they don't know what's up they feling on? Now?
- 48:29Speaker 1: Do you feel like now that you got this initial
- 48:32Speaker 1: album out into the world, like every you got this
- 48:38Speaker 1: certain pocket of fans that are just like Griselda heads.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Album. And It's funny about that because Gun was like yo,
- 48:45Speaker 2: like he's like you are Griselda, so you could drop
- 48:48Speaker 2: like he Gun allowed me to do whatever I want
- 48:51Speaker 2: to do. I want to put the logo on it
- 48:53Speaker 2: sometimes sometimes like for the spice one in uh bun
- 48:58Speaker 2: Be video, I threw the Grizzelda logo on there for
- 49:00Speaker 2: the me and conductor. Should I put it on there?
- 49:03Speaker 2: I did? I left it off of my album cover
- 49:05Speaker 2: just because I felt like I felt like I'm I'm Griselda,
- 49:11Speaker 2: and I'm that's my team, like you know, like forever,
- 49:15Speaker 2: and I'm honored to be a part of something that
- 49:17Speaker 2: is like to me, is like that's the new Wu
- 49:21Speaker 2: Tang to me for sure, you know what I'm saying.
- 49:24Speaker 2: And it because like think about it, Staten Island was
- 49:27Speaker 2: like some other ship Buffalo kind of some other ship.
- 49:31Speaker 2: So I love that comparison.
- 49:32Speaker 1: But is that album done?
- 49:34Speaker 2: Which one I look at this is this is like
- 49:37Speaker 2: my Griselda release. You know what I'm saying, you know
- 49:40Speaker 2: where you said that logo on the vinyl and ship man,
- 49:43Speaker 2: I just let the fans figure it out for themselves.
- 49:46Speaker 2: Man Gun on the album, Conway on the album, Boldie
- 49:49Speaker 2: on the album, Conductor produced on the album. I mean,
- 49:52Speaker 2: what more do you want? This is it?
- 49:54Speaker 1: Is there another collab album you got tucked besides the
- 49:57Speaker 1: Clinton one?
- 49:58Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Me and Conduct? And then I got me
- 50:01Speaker 2: and DJ Quick where I wrapped over all the grooves.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Oh shit, And I'm not gonna tell you who rapped
- 50:06Speaker 2: over it with me. Also, that's yeah, that one's gonna
- 50:10Speaker 2: be crazy. And then I got one with an artist's
- 50:12Speaker 2: named Idris. It was amazing. Yeah. And then you're gonna
- 50:17Speaker 2: have active part too by me and Sean.
- 50:21Speaker 1: So what is can you give me? Like? If you're
- 50:23Speaker 1: if me and.
- 50:23Speaker 2: Terriss Martin got one as well, jazz album Jesus Yeah,
- 50:27Speaker 2: don't stop and I'm out my deal now, so tap in.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Yeah, your catalog's crazy. If you if if there's an
- 50:37Speaker 1: independent artist that's watching this, I feel like you're really
- 50:40Speaker 1: good at like the rap hustle if you will, yeah,
- 50:43Speaker 1: because there's so many ways you can get bags in
- 50:45Speaker 1: this rap game as an independent artist, like what would
- 50:47Speaker 1: be I guess your biggest advice like untapped money or
- 50:52Speaker 1: you know what's what's like kind of break down, you
- 50:55Speaker 1: know the secrets of the game in which like you're
- 50:56Speaker 1: able to just like.
- 50:58Speaker 2: Well, I think I think it all starts with the music. First.
- 51:02Speaker 2: Do something creative and original and build your brand up.
- 51:07Speaker 2: Give them an aesthetic. Like when you when you come
- 51:10Speaker 2: and get a Jayworthy album, you know what you're getting.
- 51:13Speaker 2: You know, the artwork going to be top tier, the
- 51:16Speaker 2: production going to be top tier. Or for example, look
- 51:20Speaker 2: at June, same thing, look at Griselda the same thing.
- 51:23Speaker 2: So it's all about branding and aesthetic. But as far
- 51:25Speaker 2: as the hustle goes independently, you know, just try to
- 51:28Speaker 2: have ownership. And there's nothing wrong with taking a deal
- 51:34Speaker 2: and taking in advancement and getting started like that. It
- 51:38Speaker 2: might not be the best deal that you want in
- 51:40Speaker 2: the beginning. I didn't sign the best deal that I
- 51:42Speaker 2: wanted in the beginning, but it gave me, you know,
- 51:47Speaker 2: it gave me a boost and I was able after that.
- 51:50Speaker 2: I was able to wiggle and do what I want.
- 51:52Speaker 2: So a lot of cats will be like, well, nah, man,
- 51:55Speaker 2: I'm not taking that or nah, man, take that man,
- 51:58Speaker 2: use that marketing money and go up with it. I
- 52:01Speaker 2: just started using marketing money. This is like the first
- 52:04Speaker 2: album once upon a time that I was like, all right, cool,
- 52:08Speaker 2: we'll do digital marketing or you know what I'm saying.
- 52:11Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean, look at your debut album right,
- 52:14Speaker 1: kind of pull it out.
- 52:15Speaker 2: Yeah for sure, Empire, Empire shout out Sanima and Ghazi.
- 52:19Speaker 2: And you know what, even though I'm out my deal,
- 52:21Speaker 2: I probably never end up leaving Empire because.
- 52:23Speaker 1: At least I always have some business.
- 52:24Speaker 2: There, always no forever, like my whole catalog over there,
- 52:28Speaker 2: I just and they always done good business with me,
- 52:31Speaker 2: and they made me a priority, you know, like on
- 52:33Speaker 2: the Empire, they pushing my shit like I'm a priority
- 52:37Speaker 2: over there. So it's always important to be at a
- 52:40Speaker 2: label where they really rock with you. You know. If
- 52:43Speaker 2: I go somewhere to a major and it might sound good,
- 52:45Speaker 2: oh I'm on wool, you wold. But if you if
- 52:48Speaker 2: you're not a priority over there, you don't you don't
- 52:50Speaker 2: got somebody in the building that believe in you, then
- 52:53Speaker 2: what's that going to do?
- 52:55Speaker 1: You might as be on destructet at that point. That part,
- 52:58Speaker 1: all right, brother, we'll look the album is out once.
- 53:00Speaker 1: Want to do this one and two?
- 53:02Speaker 2: Yes, sir, Vinyl coming, Vinyl, VHS, DVD, merch. You already know.
- 53:08Speaker 2: We did a bunch of collabs. We did one with
- 53:10Speaker 2: Awake New York. We did one with Huff This is
- 53:13Speaker 2: the Hugh one right here. Fire but yeah, yeah, I'm
- 53:18Speaker 2: about to be dropping soon.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Go support and I can't wait to hear this George
- 53:21Speaker 1: Quinn album.
- 53:23Speaker 2: That'll be the next time I come up on here.
- 53:25Speaker 1: Please bring him with you, please.
- 53:27Speaker 2: All right, I'm gonna bring George though. Trying to be
- 53:30Speaker 2: ready to do press, he told me he was like,
- 53:32Speaker 2: I'm gonna come run around.
- 53:33Speaker 1: I don't have no shoes on. Jay Worthy, my brother,
- 53:36Speaker 1: I appreciate your mane Yes, sir guy,
