- 0:27Speaker 1: You will hear.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Young children.
- 0:30Speaker 1: You know when someone points something out to you and
- 0:32Speaker 1: then you can never not hear it that way.
- 0:34Speaker 2: It's like, it's like listening to that song, Sir shut,
- 0:37Speaker 2: Dircy so shut.
- 0:45Speaker 3: They put on the interweb on like memes and stuff.
- 0:49Speaker 3: They give you fake lyrics, and it really sounds like
- 0:52Speaker 3: these people are saying that.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Bill Bill Lawrence arrived in the zoom call everybody Intergalactic,
- 1:00Speaker 1: Kill the children, Kill the children.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I don't like that.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I don't like it either, But the Beastie Boys did it.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Donald, They did not do that.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I'm not one of the Beastie Boys.
- 1:10Speaker 3: But I'm a huge fan of the Beastie Boys, and
- 1:11Speaker 3: I refuse to believe that they kill children, or that
- 1:14Speaker 3: they want you to kill children. In an intergalactic planetary way.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Intergalactic Kill the children, Kill the children. And here's for Lawrence. Everybody.
- 1:23Speaker 4: You guys, watch the Beastie Boys documentary.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Not yet.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I really want to watch it, though it's on my
- 1:30Speaker 3: to do list. I'm stuck on the right now.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I'm watching them. You know who really.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Likes the Beastie Boys a lot?
- 1:36Speaker 5: The Beastie Boys.
- 1:44Speaker 6: Documentary.
- 1:46Speaker 5: And then we did this great thing.
- 1:51Speaker 6: Bill.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I imagine you as a sports fan. You're watching the the the.
- 1:55Speaker 2: That's the one. I'm stuck on.
- 1:56Speaker 1: The Bulls.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Yes, oh my gosh, this is But Bill, doesn't this
- 2:01Speaker 3: remind you of why you loved Michael Jordan so much
- 2:04Speaker 3: when you were younger? Like this makes me realize why
- 2:07Speaker 3: he was one of my idols growing up.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Even I had the poster. Guys, I want you to
- 2:11Speaker 1: know that I had a poster of him in my
- 2:13Speaker 1: room because I wanted to be cool too. Every every
- 2:16Speaker 1: kid that age, our age at that time had the
- 2:19Speaker 1: Michael Jordan poster. And even though I didn't watch any
- 2:21Speaker 1: of it, I was like, well, I'm gonna need one
- 2:22Speaker 1: of those.
- 2:23Speaker 7: There is nothing funnier than you with the Michael Jordan poster.
- 2:27Speaker 1: It was right next to a Phantom of the opera
- 2:29Speaker 1: beach towel. My father bought me a Phantom of the
- 2:32Speaker 1: opera beach towel, and you were supposed to use it
- 2:34Speaker 1: at the beach. And I was like, this is art.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I will hang this on my wall. And I took
- 2:41Speaker 1: thumbtacks and hung it like a tapestry, like like a
- 2:44Speaker 1: really precious, rare tapestry. It was a fan of the
- 2:47Speaker 1: opera beach towel. And right next to that was Michael
- 2:50Speaker 1: Jordan dunking with his tongue out. So there you go.
- 2:53Speaker 5: I was trying, should I start his voice memo? Now, guys,
- 2:57Speaker 5: all right, well you should have.
- 3:00Speaker 7: Yeah, Zach forgot the the other day.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Oh I fucked up.
- 3:04Speaker 4: I hear that. I was the only one I haven't heard.
- 3:07Speaker 4: I haven't heard Judy Is yet because I fell asleep
- 3:09Speaker 4: last night.
- 3:10Speaker 1: It's so good.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Judy was a man. She was great.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Wait, we forgot to sing. We forgot to sing, Bill
- 3:15Speaker 1: say five, six, seven, eight, Oh.
- 3:17Speaker 4: I've always wanted to do this. Wait, is is it
- 3:19Speaker 4: going to be at the end or oh? Yes?
- 3:21Speaker 1: The audience waited in Bill. Thousands of people did an
- 3:24Speaker 1: online Twitter poll and decided that the mhm, stays all.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Right, well I'm gonna do oh yeah, because that's what
- 3:29Speaker 4: it is in my head five six, seven, eight stories.
- 3:32Speaker 1: About show We made about a bunch of dogs and
- 3:37Speaker 1: nurses and.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Said he's the stories net No, so ganda ra here
- 3:47Speaker 2: yea here.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Bill, you're the very first for the obvious reasons,
- 3:58Speaker 1: you're the very first we've invited back.
- 4:01Speaker 2: He's a reoccurring.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yes, you're recurring, Bill, Just just how you had the
- 4:05Speaker 1: power to make characters on Scrubs re reccurring, We bon
- 4:08Speaker 1: Donald and I have have the power to make you
- 4:11Speaker 1: the creator of the show recurring, and we've chosen you.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Oh I like that.
- 4:14Speaker 7: It makes it makes me feel like it's tenuous, like
- 4:17Speaker 7: I could lose this at any second.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Bill, you could fuck up and be cut anytime.
- 4:23Speaker 2: You know what.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Speaking of reoccurring, Uh, it's it has a lot to
- 4:27Speaker 3: do with the episode.
- 4:28Speaker 2: But Yo, how where did you? Where did you find Rob?
- 4:32Speaker 2: How did that happen?
- 4:33Speaker 1: What's the Rob story?
- 4:34Speaker 4: Bill?
- 4:34Speaker 3: Because we had versions of this, How did you find Rob?
- 4:37Speaker 3: Who plays the tod?
- 4:38Speaker 2: Everyone?
- 4:38Speaker 1: All my laugh out loud moments in this episode were Rob.
- 4:41Speaker 1: And I'm embarrassed to say that because they're the dumbest
- 4:43Speaker 1: fucking sex jokes. But every time I always write down
- 4:46Speaker 1: lo ol, just so I can mark when I actually
- 4:48Speaker 1: leafed out loud. And they were all Robs.
- 4:52Speaker 7: Rob was an actor that got cast in a play
- 4:57Speaker 7: that I wrote, and so I got to know him,
- 5:00Speaker 7: and he was a stand up comic and his performance
- 5:04Speaker 7: was always better than his material because he was just,
- 5:06Speaker 7: you know, had crazy amounts of confidence. And I just
- 5:09Speaker 7: got to be buddies with him, playing basketball and hanging out.
- 5:12Speaker 7: And my wife always says that I ruined his life
- 5:16Speaker 7: because Rob went to Columbia and I think he was
- 5:18Speaker 7: thinking about doing other things besides acting, And right then
- 5:24Speaker 7: I said, I'm doing the Scrubs pilot. You want to
- 5:26Speaker 7: be the jockey surgeon. He might have a line here
- 5:30Speaker 7: and there. I think line had Rob had one line
- 5:33Speaker 7: in every episode for nine years.
- 5:37Speaker 4: And then.
- 5:39Speaker 7: You know, and after that, I think, you know, he
- 5:43Speaker 7: was a guy that had been doing it so long
- 5:45Speaker 7: it was too late to reinvent himself and to start
- 5:47Speaker 7: over as anything other than an actor.
- 5:49Speaker 4: But this says a very good ending.
- 5:50Speaker 7: Because he's a hugely He's still the Todd and he
- 5:53Speaker 7: has a hugely successful real estate business in Venice, California,
- 5:56Speaker 7: and is killing it out there. And he's still occasionally though,
- 6:00Speaker 7: dyes his hair black, puts the fake tattoo on, and
- 6:03Speaker 7: goes to like European comic cons as the Todd And
- 6:07Speaker 7: he's got to pay people pay him for high fives.
- 6:09Speaker 1: And he's got his cameo business, which you can get
- 6:11Speaker 1: him to cameo all your friends if you go.
- 6:13Speaker 3: And if I were hiring Rob to do a Todd appearance,
- 6:22Speaker 3: he'd have to be into banana hammock like I'd be.
- 6:24Speaker 2: And you have to.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Probably costs extra. Donald. That probably costs extra.
- 6:27Speaker 4: I would probably cost ever extra.
- 6:29Speaker 7: And now he probably needs about a six month lead
- 6:31Speaker 7: time on that to start starving himself.
- 6:38Speaker 1: By the way, if you need a real estate, if
- 6:40Speaker 1: you need a real estate broker in southern California, especially
- 6:43Speaker 1: down at the beach, hire Rob Mashio, because I'm sure
- 6:46Speaker 1: he'd be willing to give you a high five while
- 6:48Speaker 1: he shows you places. In Venice.
- 6:49Speaker 7: There is, without a doubt way to buy a house
- 6:52Speaker 7: from me high five out there for someone.
- 6:55Speaker 1: You could buy a house and get a high five
- 6:57Speaker 1: from Robin, surell throw it in with the yeah.
- 7:00Speaker 7: I don't even think you have to pay extra for that,
- 7:03Speaker 7: but he couldn't be. It couldn't be a nicer guy.
- 7:06Speaker 7: Loved the show. I used to love how passionate he
- 7:09Speaker 7: was about it. And you guys made the joke because
- 7:11Speaker 7: he would have one line and he would be running
- 7:13Speaker 7: it over and over and that it's still one of
- 7:16Speaker 7: my favorite jokes.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Rob's over there running line.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Running singular. He would take it. He would take it
- 7:21Speaker 1: so seriously, and we were laughing with him because he
- 7:24Speaker 1: would laugh at it with us. But he would be
- 7:26Speaker 1: like over there in the corner being like high five,
- 7:28Speaker 1: high five, fine working.
- 7:32Speaker 2: It out, but I mean, come on, always delivered.
- 7:36Speaker 1: He's so fucking funny man. It's it's always the same joke.
- 7:38Speaker 1: But that's another testament to Rob. It's like, it's always
- 7:41Speaker 1: an innuendo joke. It's the same joke, and it's always
- 7:45Speaker 1: in a sexual innuendo joke. But I but a testament
- 7:47Speaker 1: to you and him. I laugh every fucking time.
- 7:54Speaker 4: You by the way, you you just nailed. I believe
- 7:57Speaker 4: it might be you know, old war in history. But
- 8:01Speaker 4: my favorite Todd joke I think came from a one
- 8:05Speaker 4: a month.
- 8:05Speaker 7: I think it was Neil Goldman that I hate giving
- 8:07Speaker 7: him a name check because he wants them so bad.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I know. I saw Neil Goman wrote on Twitter He's like,
- 8:13Speaker 1: there's been six episodes. I've been mentioned.
- 8:15Speaker 4: Once, I know, but the I think it was I
- 8:18Speaker 4: think it was him. I think someone of the writer's
- 8:20Speaker 4: room said, is every time the Todd talks just going
- 8:23Speaker 4: to be sexual innuendo? And I think he's the one
- 8:25Speaker 4: that said in your end, in your.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Endo, he has the best line. He has the best
- 8:33Speaker 3: line in this episode. It made me laugh so hard
- 8:35Speaker 3: when he says it's.
- 8:36Speaker 1: One of my l O lst I bet you it is.
- 8:39Speaker 2: When he goes, you know what else? You know what else?
- 8:47Speaker 7: Remember, I think it's I'm not sure, Todd, but I'm
- 8:49Speaker 7: gonna guess it's your penis.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Yeah, Todd, I'm not sure, but I'm gonna guess it's
- 8:58Speaker 1: your penis. And it was now Bill Bill in your mind?
- 9:05Speaker 1: Is he a good surgeon?
- 9:07Speaker 4: Yeah? I don't know if you remember, if you guys
- 9:08Speaker 4: have gotten there yet, no, we're only on this one ten.
- 9:11Speaker 7: One of my favorite moments that the writer's room all
- 9:15Speaker 7: loved was because we had read something about how surgeons
- 9:20Speaker 7: are just cutters, you know, medical guys call them hammers
- 9:23Speaker 7: and the patient and nail, and if they get too
- 9:26Speaker 7: caught up in their head, they sometimes aren't as good.
- 9:29Speaker 7: And that gave us the idea for Turk's character. Ask
- 9:32Speaker 7: doctor when who the best surgeon is, thinking it would
- 9:35Speaker 7: be that young girl Bonnie or whatever her name is,
- 9:39Speaker 7: and doctor Wenn says, you really want to know who
- 9:40Speaker 7: it is, and he points at the Todd and you say,
- 9:44Speaker 7: no way. And then doctor Wenn says, you're all caught
- 9:48Speaker 7: up in your brain thinking about all these problems. You
- 9:50Speaker 7: know what Todd's doing, and they cut to Todd and surgery.
- 9:53Speaker 7: We actually paid for the Bonanza.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Theme because he's just he's just looking at all his instruments.
- 9:58Speaker 4: He's going tiny scalpel like DECII.
- 10:08Speaker 1: So it's he's still present in the moment because his
- 10:12Speaker 1: mind isn't getting distracted. He's just like, yeah, he's.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Got nothing to distract him. It's like somebody. It's like,
- 10:17Speaker 4: it's like, how somebody that's not that bright could be
- 10:19Speaker 4: great at the video game. That's Todd.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Let's talk about Bonnie because we mentioned it earlier that
- 10:27Speaker 3: she was supposed to be my nemesis at one point, right,
- 10:30Speaker 3: like that was supposed.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Yeah, we we she got another gig. She was good.
- 10:34Speaker 7: She would have stayed around the same way Doug did,
- 10:36Speaker 7: in the same way other you know, JD. Had Doug
- 10:39Speaker 7: on the medical side, she would have been the person
- 10:41Speaker 7: that stayed around on the surgical side.
- 10:43Speaker 4: But she got another gig.
- 10:44Speaker 2: You know.
- 10:45Speaker 7: That's why we we sent her off on that trip
- 10:49Speaker 7: and came up with that story only because we knew
- 10:51Speaker 7: she was not going to be around to.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Work for a while.
- 10:55Speaker 3: That's always tough, man, that has to be difficult. Like
- 10:58Speaker 3: when we talk about the people that have him through
- 11:00Speaker 3: the show, and you know, like Azz and all of
- 11:03Speaker 3: these other people, it's like, you know, if they weren't
- 11:06Speaker 3: bubbling and doing their thing at the time, they would
- 11:09Speaker 3: have been staples on the show for years.
- 11:11Speaker 4: To without a doubt.
- 11:12Speaker 6: Man.
- 11:12Speaker 7: Even Charles Chung disappeared for a second because he got
- 11:16Speaker 7: some pilot or movie and stuff.
- 11:17Speaker 4: And we loved having that dude around.
- 11:19Speaker 7: He's just a really kind of you know, meet Potato's
- 11:22Speaker 7: good actor, you know, and uh.
- 11:24Speaker 1: And he was a good straight man too for Donald's
- 11:26Speaker 1: because he was just so good at deadpan, you know,
- 11:28Speaker 1: and Donald could be like wacky Turk and he was
- 11:31Speaker 1: just perfect.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Like we had. You can keep listening him.
- 11:35Speaker 7: Remember Neil and Garrett called them our weapons chest, and
- 11:38Speaker 7: those were one line characters that we thought were so
- 11:42Speaker 7: very funny that not just Ted the lawyer and Aloma,
- 11:47Speaker 7: you know, Nurse Roberts, but like doctor Zeltzer, you know.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And Bob yeah, way, Bob Lennon, who's yet to make
- 11:56Speaker 1: an appearance. I don't know if he arrives in season
- 11:58Speaker 1: one or not, but you introduced me to Bob Clint
- 12:01Speaker 1: Dennon on the show and he played Zeltzer, and I
- 12:03Speaker 1: just thought that is one of the funniest character actors
- 12:06Speaker 1: I've ever met. I've put him in, I put him
- 12:08Speaker 1: in a bunch of stuff since because I just love
- 12:10Speaker 1: that guy.
- 12:10Speaker 7: He's uh, he's amazing, you know him and Sam Lloyd
- 12:14Speaker 7: and uh, Krista and Aloma.
- 12:17Speaker 4: I mean, they could all be regulars on any show.
- 12:20Speaker 4: And so it was.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Though of like you'd have like your guest star level,
- 12:28Speaker 1: like Krista, and then you'd have like the Aloma level
- 12:31Speaker 1: who were like and then you'd have people used to
- 12:32Speaker 1: call your assassins who would just come by once in
- 12:35Speaker 1: a while and they do like a drive by one
- 12:36Speaker 1: liner and just kill it like and and Bob Clintdennon
- 12:40Speaker 1: was one of those. He will there will there be prostitutes.
- 12:47Speaker 4: He would just my favorite part of that joke, you
- 12:49Speaker 4: love that.
- 12:50Speaker 7: My favorite was doctor Cox going no and Bob's read
- 12:53Speaker 7: of Poe Good.
- 12:57Speaker 1: SOEs no, oh good good.
- 13:06Speaker 4: He was not worried about it at all. He was hopeful.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Hey, Bill, I thought we could start off since we
- 13:10Speaker 1: have you, and I was thinking today because I did,
- 13:13Speaker 1: because you're here, and I put on a nice shirt.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I was telling him before you got on that because
- 13:16Speaker 1: we had you, I put on a nice shirt. And
- 13:18Speaker 1: I actually did a lot of preparation for this episode.
- 13:21Speaker 4: I'll watched it last night too. I'm ready.
- 13:23Speaker 1: It's very good.
- 13:24Speaker 2: First, it was such a great episode.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Dude, Judy fucking Raly, we gotta do you guys got
- 13:30Speaker 1: to carry one torch for me beforehand.
- 13:32Speaker 7: The only thing that really bummed me out about this
- 13:34Speaker 7: episode and all my experiences is when I catch up
- 13:36Speaker 7: with you guys, unless I want to pop a DVD
- 13:39Speaker 7: and I watch on Hulu. And the song that Christa
- 13:42Speaker 7: picked at the end of this episode was so good
- 13:45Speaker 7: and it was it's not you know, the original music
- 13:47Speaker 7: is not on these episodes and streaming, and it bums
- 13:50Speaker 7: me out.
- 13:50Speaker 1: When I heard you. We keep telling the audience that,
- 13:53Speaker 1: And just to reiterate if you're just hearing this, not
- 13:55Speaker 1: that we don't love Hulu, but we do love who
- 13:58Speaker 1: but we love you Hulu, but because of streaming rights
- 14:02Speaker 1: and contracts and such, you're not gonna get all of
- 14:05Speaker 1: the original songs that that Bill and Christa and others
- 14:08Speaker 1: placed in.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Zach And the ending song of this in the rain
- 14:14Speaker 4: was a song by a band called Sebadoh, and it
- 14:16Speaker 4: was so good and so poignant in the real production
- 14:20Speaker 4: of it.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Speaking of music, we used it so much.
- 14:25Speaker 4: That's in this episode right, definitely in this episode, and.
- 14:29Speaker 3: It's kind of new in the scrubs. It's like the
- 14:32Speaker 3: second time we've used it. Blah blah blah blah blah
- 14:33Speaker 3: blah blah. But when it came on, it pissed me
- 14:36Speaker 3: off so much.
- 14:37Speaker 2: It was like, oh, you ruined it with the what's funny.
- 14:39Speaker 1: What's funny is like back when they back when they
- 14:41Speaker 1: introduced that sad c This was like, you know, this
- 14:44Speaker 1: was like, you know, a tenth episode of season one.
- 14:46Speaker 1: It was genuinely like sweet and heartfelt. Now that we
- 14:49Speaker 1: did nine seasons and then started to make fun of it.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Now when it's like in a point you moment, you're like, oh,
- 14:53Speaker 1: not that sad. This is the second time. This is
- 15:01Speaker 1: the second time.
- 15:01Speaker 3: This was the second time. I remember when it finally
- 15:04Speaker 3: caught my attention, I was like, how come it fucking
- 15:07Speaker 3: keeps going? Because at first I was like, oh, such
- 15:10Speaker 3: a beautiful moment for so long, for so long, and
- 15:13Speaker 3: then somebody was like, dude, the sad song, We gotta
- 15:16Speaker 3: figure that out.
- 15:17Speaker 2: I think it was you Bill that said that it's
- 15:20Speaker 2: gotta go.
- 15:20Speaker 4: All in our head.
- 15:22Speaker 7: All those cues were the stuff that's happening in Zach's head.
- 15:25Speaker 7: Zach's character's ahead while he's rooming around.
- 15:27Speaker 6: You know.
- 15:28Speaker 1: So then you ended up doing a moment where in
- 15:31Speaker 1: one of the episodes where I actually referenced the cue.
- 15:34Speaker 4: Well, you say what do you mean?
- 15:35Speaker 7: And now is when you say something poignant it makes
- 15:37Speaker 7: me think about it, And then the sad music places.
- 15:40Speaker 1: And then you hear me, you hear me in the
- 15:42Speaker 1: voiceover go and then I think, and then and then
- 15:47Speaker 1: you geniously fucking then use the queue out of that scene.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Now it's so fun.
- 15:54Speaker 7: Yeah, he walks away and says you're an idiot, and
- 15:56Speaker 7: it goes the real cue goes mam uh, and then
- 16:00Speaker 7: then you lip sync the last one you go.
- 16:09Speaker 1: I thought that.
- 16:10Speaker 4: I think that guy's name is Jan Stevens, and I
- 16:12Speaker 4: think he won a bunch of score awards for our show.
- 16:15Speaker 2: I don't think he was happy when you were like,
- 16:17Speaker 2: I don't like the anymore.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I want to he understood.
- 16:21Speaker 4: He got it.
- 16:21Speaker 1: That guy got it that he got to write, by
- 16:24Speaker 1: the way, just right hard, very hard assignment, just like
- 16:27Speaker 1: you guys.
- 16:28Speaker 7: Are joking about yourself, as with anybody that was a
- 16:31Speaker 7: dude that worked his butt off, Oh my god here
- 16:36Speaker 7: for years and then when you get later in it,
- 16:39Speaker 7: you'd be like, hey, we need a queue four in
- 16:41Speaker 7: your inbox?
- 16:41Speaker 4: Will go how about this one?
- 16:44Speaker 7: Just be literally he was like one hand on his
- 16:47Speaker 7: keyboard when you said I need a cue, just going
- 16:48Speaker 7: bomb bomb bum bum bum.
- 16:50Speaker 4: There you go done, I'm gonna head out to the park.
- 16:53Speaker 1: What's funny was that? There? You know when there's these
- 16:54Speaker 1: things called stings, which are really quick little moments. They're
- 16:57Speaker 1: all over scrubs and and uh and it's funny. One yeah,
- 17:01Speaker 1: Jan would write one like hey, we need some stings
- 17:03Speaker 1: for the end of the scene, and you get one
- 17:04Speaker 1: to be like boom, and you like boom, but we'd
- 17:09Speaker 1: use them. It was like big scrub scene. And bow,
- 17:15Speaker 1: I thought, I thought, because we have you here and
- 17:19Speaker 1: and and we're really we're really not We're not only
- 17:22Speaker 1: entertaining the audience, but we want to provide a service
- 17:25Speaker 1: so that you could explain a little bit about what
- 17:27Speaker 1: a showrunner does. Because I was thinking as we were
- 17:29Speaker 1: having you on today that I honestly think I've done
- 17:32Speaker 1: a bunch of different jobs in my career. I think
- 17:34Speaker 1: a showrunner is the hardest job there is. And it's
- 17:39Speaker 1: dovetails with this episode, because this is about taking on
- 17:42Speaker 1: too much workload and being stressed and being overwhelmed, particularly
- 17:46Speaker 1: for the character of Joe Tracy and Sarah Chalk. And
- 17:49Speaker 1: I just I thought you could explain to people that
- 17:51Speaker 1: aren't in the business, uh, what a show what a
- 17:53Speaker 1: show runner is, what a show runner does, and why
- 17:55Speaker 1: it's such a fucking impossibly hard job.
- 17:57Speaker 4: Well, so it was here. What's interesting, man, Hollywood. The
- 18:00Speaker 4: first thing that you know, even when you're.
- 18:01Speaker 7: A kid, if you like movies and TV and stuff
- 18:04Speaker 7: like that, is that you know that feature films are
- 18:07Speaker 7: a director's industry. We have all gone like, oh, it's
- 18:10Speaker 7: a Martin Scorsese movie, it's a Steven Spielerberg movie, no
- 18:13Speaker 7: matter who wrote it, you know, and the directors get
- 18:16Speaker 7: to do it.
- 18:16Speaker 4: They want the script and they cast it, and they
- 18:18Speaker 4: argue for final cut.
- 18:19Speaker 7: And what's really interesting is in TV, directors come and
- 18:23Speaker 7: go week to week, and so the person that creates
- 18:27Speaker 7: the show, the head writer, often becomes an advent of
- 18:30Speaker 7: the term for it, the showrunner. And it's why I think,
- 18:33Speaker 7: and I'm not being self aggrandizing. I'm talking about other people,
- 18:35Speaker 7: not myself, some of the best writers in entertainment stay
- 18:39Speaker 7: in television because in west you're the movie director. In
- 18:43Speaker 7: movies that you're like, hey, you give us the script
- 18:46Speaker 7: and then we'll do whatever we want to it.
- 18:47Speaker 4: And in TV they go, all right, if we decide
- 18:50Speaker 4: to do.
- 18:50Speaker 7: Your TV show, you get to cast it, you get
- 18:56Speaker 7: to write it, you get final cut the music. You're
- 19:01Speaker 7: in charge of the director so that you can come
- 19:04Speaker 7: down and say, no, I don't like the way this
- 19:06Speaker 7: scene's blocked. It's gonna be funny if you do it
- 19:08Speaker 7: this way, and you get to run the whole shebang, right,
- 19:12Speaker 7: And so that's really appealing. The danger of the job
- 19:16Speaker 7: is since they said essentially, if you're the showrunner, you
- 19:19Speaker 7: can do everything.
- 19:20Speaker 4: The people whose brains explode.
- 19:22Speaker 7: Are the ones that go, all right, I'm gonna do
- 19:25Speaker 7: all those things, but I'm also going to do wardrobe,
- 19:28Speaker 7: and I'm also going to stand on set and make
- 19:30Speaker 7: sure no one changes and to also and I'm also
- 19:33Speaker 7: going to do props, and I'm gonna do you know.
- 19:36Speaker 4: And those are the people that sometimes they melt.
- 19:41Speaker 7: Sometimes they're viewed as kind of tyrants, you know, Like
- 19:45Speaker 7: you know, Aaron Sorkin, I think would be one of
- 19:48Speaker 7: the first people to tell you that he's hard to
- 19:50Speaker 7: work with and for because you know, every last detail
- 19:53Speaker 7: you know drives him banana pants and the job. The
- 19:58Speaker 7: hard part of the job become whether or not you
- 20:01Speaker 7: can go of control and seed some things to talented people.
- 20:06Speaker 7: And I was lucky enough that we had so many
- 20:07Speaker 7: talented people there, like Carrie Bennett, the head of wardrobe.
- 20:10Speaker 4: She's done a lot of shows for me after that.
- 20:13Speaker 4: If I was somebody that needed to look at every
- 20:15Speaker 4: T shirt, every outfit, I think I would have you
- 20:18Speaker 4: not made it.
- 20:19Speaker 7: That would have burnt out quicker, but I was lucky
- 20:21Speaker 7: and said, hey, you do this and I'll only say
- 20:23Speaker 7: a word if I think it's wrong, And then I
- 20:25Speaker 7: never had to say anything, so to.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Me, yes, that's what the gig is great. It forces
- 20:30Speaker 4: you to pick the things that you prioritize the most
- 20:33Speaker 4: personally and not get lost in the things you don't
- 20:35Speaker 4: care about and the people that drown try to do everything.
- 20:39Speaker 1: But even in not micromanaging Bill, in a typical hour,
- 20:42Speaker 1: you are leading a writer's room, then being called to
- 20:45Speaker 1: set to watch a rehearsal for the scene being shot,
- 20:48Speaker 1: then needing to go to editorial to look at a
- 20:51Speaker 1: cut that has to go out to the network.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Doing rewrites if jokes don't work right.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I mean, I just remember watching you and thinking, God,
- 21:00Speaker 1: I mean, and it takes a person who can multitask
- 21:03Speaker 1: without going fucking nuts, because it's just a lot of
- 21:05Speaker 1: pressure the herd, believe it or not.
- 21:06Speaker 7: The hardest part for me and I had a little
- 21:09Speaker 7: of it with YouTube, but more with the writers is
- 21:12Speaker 7: you also become, if not a big brother, you know,
- 21:16Speaker 7: a parent and a psychiatrist to people.
- 21:19Speaker 4: And the joke was, you know a lot of the
- 21:20Speaker 4: writers stayed for five, six, seven, even eight years.
- 21:23Speaker 2: On Scrubs, which is unheard of. I didn't know it
- 21:27Speaker 2: was a good gig. Yeah, I didn't know.
- 21:28Speaker 7: You take off, but if you're on a hit show,
- 21:30Speaker 7: you stay and your salary goes up every year. And
- 21:34Speaker 7: the joke was that by the end, every single writer
- 21:37Speaker 7: had been in my office emotional crying about something, you
- 21:42Speaker 7: know what I mean. And Zach and Donald, you guys
- 21:44Speaker 7: can't see them, they're laughing because I think they both
- 21:46Speaker 7: inherently know.
- 21:47Speaker 4: That I'm the last person on earth that wants somebody
- 21:51Speaker 4: to be in his office.
- 21:52Speaker 1: We turned you into a hugger, Bill, BILLT. Donald and I.
- 21:55Speaker 1: I remember when you didn't hoddle the night Donald Donald
- 21:58Speaker 1: and I broke you down.
- 21:58Speaker 2: You were finally like, yo, dude, come on, let's hug
- 22:01Speaker 2: and I.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Was like, yeah, Donald and I broke him down. He
- 22:05Speaker 1: was not a hugger. He was a very waspy Connecticut guy.
- 22:08Speaker 6: Oh.
- 22:09Speaker 7: They used to always make fun of He think, come
- 22:10Speaker 7: in with some emotional thing of work or life or whatever,
- 22:13Speaker 7: and I would, subconsciously, with all the things on my desk,
- 22:16Speaker 7: build a wall between the two almost nuts.
- 22:20Speaker 4: What's going on with you? And your uh and your
- 22:22Speaker 4: your boyfriend.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Yeah, do that, and you had to do that with
- 22:28Speaker 1: with everyone. And also I think you know, you started
- 22:31Speaker 1: on Spin City where you were you were young, and
- 22:33Speaker 1: you had, you know, a legend like Michael j. Fox
- 22:36Speaker 1: to to work with and to make sure he was happy.
- 22:39Speaker 1: And then when when Scrubs came on, we were all unknown.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Did you feel a little bit of uh an onus
- 22:44Speaker 1: to keep everyone's egos in check? I mean I would,
- 22:47Speaker 1: I would think that.
- 22:48Speaker 7: Yeah, I really wanted to keep people's egos in check
- 22:51Speaker 7: because in between, you know, I had seen, you know,
- 22:54Speaker 7: how hard it is when certain things hit you.
- 22:56Speaker 4: You know, I was on the first year of Friends
- 22:58Speaker 4: and actually.
- 22:59Speaker 7: Empathized with that actors and actresses because watching how you
- 23:02Speaker 7: know that group of there air kids, how their lives
- 23:04Speaker 7: all change so fast, sometimes to the better, and you know,
- 23:08Speaker 7: you guys know this burden nothing to complain about, but
- 23:10Speaker 7: sometimes in complicated ways. So yeah, it was it was
- 23:13Speaker 7: really important to me to have a good culture at work,
- 23:17Speaker 7: to keep everybody's egos from blowing up. And I'm not
- 23:23Speaker 7: you know, I don't uh to equate it to sports
- 23:25Speaker 7: because we were talking about the Michael Jordan thing, No,
- 23:27Speaker 7: I'm not Michael Jordan, but to be a leader for
- 23:30Speaker 7: a group of people that they at least knew there
- 23:32Speaker 7: were levels of respect you had to have for each
- 23:34Speaker 7: other and ways you're supposed to behave, and that somebody
- 23:37Speaker 7: would watch your back.
- 23:38Speaker 1: You know, you might not be a Michael Jordan, but
- 23:39Speaker 1: I think of you like a Mike Jaminsky.
- 23:43Speaker 4: Donald and I are basketball guys. It's such an insult man.
- 23:46Speaker 2: That is the problem is is that that's the only
- 23:49Speaker 2: basketball guy. He knows.
- 23:51Speaker 4: No.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Listen, when my father of a certain age, my father
- 23:54Speaker 1: would drag me to the New Jersey Nets games and
- 23:57Speaker 1: so I only know whatever year that was, that team,
- 24:00Speaker 1: Darryl Dawkins, Mike Jaminsky, otis Bird's song. So whenever I
- 24:04Speaker 1: have to make a basketball reference, I'm still like, oh,
- 24:06Speaker 1: you mean like otis Bird's song?
- 24:09Speaker 6: Do you know?
- 24:09Speaker 4: Do you know Darryl Dawkins uh nickname?
- 24:13Speaker 1: Yeah? It doesn't wait doesn't he doesn't top the Thunder
- 24:17Speaker 1: Thunder and Bards.
- 24:20Speaker 5: Yes.
- 24:20Speaker 4: And you know why I care because there was a
- 24:22Speaker 4: pitch that we were really trying to do. I don't
- 24:25Speaker 4: don't know why we got bogged down in it, but
- 24:27Speaker 4: it lived for the better part of two years that
- 24:30Speaker 4: everybody wanted Darryl Dawkins to be nurse Robert sex husband.
- 24:34Speaker 2: That would have been awesome. Oh man, God rest his soul,
- 24:37Speaker 2: but that would have been awesome. If he was on
- 24:39Speaker 2: the show. That would have been the best day. That
- 24:41Speaker 2: would have been. Oh, that would have been a highlight
- 24:43Speaker 2: for me. Oh my.
- 24:44Speaker 4: It was so like it sucks because it breaks.
- 24:46Speaker 7: It sounds like it breaks down on male female Dynamics
- 24:49Speaker 7: because there's a lot of guy sports fans in there.
- 24:51Speaker 7: But it was one of those things that a lot
- 24:53Speaker 7: of the great female writers on that show were like,
- 24:56Speaker 7: I don't understand.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Why do you want this former seven foot tall NBA
- 25:01Speaker 4: that would have been perfect that they called Chocolate Thunder
- 25:04Speaker 4: to be your exit. He's not even an actor, right,
- 25:07Speaker 4: He's not an actor? Is being funny? No, he breaks
- 25:11Speaker 4: he breaks backboards?
- 25:12Speaker 1: Why was? Why am I right with the trivia that
- 25:14Speaker 1: he was famous for breaking backwards? And why was why
- 25:17Speaker 1: did he do that? And how could he do that?
- 25:19Speaker 4: At He didn't do it in person? He used to
- 25:21Speaker 4: the Thunder.
- 25:21Speaker 7: He used to dunk so hard that occasionally when he
- 25:23Speaker 7: would dunk, even just with a rubber basketball, he would
- 25:26Speaker 7: shi leather basketball, it would shatter the backboard.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Yeah, he's he was the first one. Yeah, he would
- 25:32Speaker 2: do it in games. It wouldn't fans.
- 25:35Speaker 4: Would go nuts. They'd have to sweep it up and
- 25:37Speaker 4: put a new one up.
- 25:38Speaker 3: It was really crazy because when Shaq broke the backboard,
- 25:41Speaker 3: he just made the backboard fall to the ground, you
- 25:43Speaker 3: know what I mean, Like the whole thing came down
- 25:45Speaker 3: chocolate thunder.
- 25:46Speaker 2: When he hit the rim, that thing exploded like the
- 25:49Speaker 2: death Star. Dude.
- 25:50Speaker 8: It was like wow.
- 25:52Speaker 3: It was such a his He has like two or
- 25:54Speaker 3: three of them, I think two, but they were so
- 25:57Speaker 3: thunderous and monstrous.
- 25:58Speaker 6: Man.
- 25:59Speaker 2: And when he did it was so hard.
- 26:01Speaker 3: And this was you know, basketball is a finesse game,
- 26:04Speaker 3: and you know it's a it's a it's a game
- 26:06Speaker 3: of you know where athletes they run real hard and
- 26:08Speaker 3: then they go at this little cup and it's so like,
- 26:11Speaker 3: you know, graceful and everything like that. There was no
- 26:14Speaker 3: grace in the way he slammed a basketball, you know.
- 26:16Speaker 4: What I mean.
- 26:17Speaker 2: It was like wow, you know what I said, You
- 26:20Speaker 2: know what I mean?
- 26:20Speaker 3: I heard it.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Yes, drink wow, drink up, Bill, Bill Bill. The fans
- 26:25Speaker 1: have started a drinking game because Donald says, you know
- 26:28Speaker 1: what I mean? So much that they're drinking every time
- 26:30Speaker 1: he says you know what I mean, I would force
- 26:32Speaker 1: people by.
- 26:33Speaker 4: The way, I want to say two things.
- 26:34Speaker 7: Wonder that one of the things, you guys can see
- 26:36Speaker 7: the connection to how much fun it would have been
- 26:39Speaker 7: for JD to want to call Turk, as one of
- 26:42Speaker 7: his many nicknames, Chocolate Thunder.
- 26:44Speaker 4: And then Nurse Roberts doesn't like it. And then you
- 26:48Speaker 4: guys don't know why she doesn't like it, and it's
- 26:50Speaker 4: because the man that left her is Chocolate thunderbirl donks.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Oh my god, it must have been so late in
- 26:59Speaker 1: the night in writer's room when you guys are wrestling
- 27:01Speaker 1: with that just hours.
- 27:05Speaker 4: How do we reach by the way? And by the way,
- 27:07Speaker 4: I'm sure he was a lovely man, but there's no
- 27:09Speaker 4: doubt in my mind while he's alive, if he had
- 27:12Speaker 4: showed up, first of all, if he had gotten that call.
- 27:14Speaker 4: You've been like, they want me to do what beyond
- 27:16Speaker 4: skullcause I don't think I ever saw him like on
- 27:18Speaker 4: Love Boat or on any shows they want me to.
- 27:21Speaker 4: They want me to come out of retirement to do
- 27:23Speaker 4: something I've never done before and play a nurse's husband.
- 27:26Speaker 1: All right, him break it backboard or something.
- 27:30Speaker 4: I think people should also drink at any time, Zach,
- 27:33Speaker 4: And I've only heard it three or four times that
- 27:36Speaker 4: you say one of the things that you would always
- 27:40Speaker 4: say to sum up the show and the voiceovers at
- 27:42Speaker 4: the end because it's become part of our lexicon, and
- 27:45Speaker 4: one of them I heard you going at the end
- 27:47Speaker 4: of the day. It was so funny to me because
- 27:50Speaker 4: you're talking.
- 27:50Speaker 7: About scrubs in an episode that if you listen to
- 27:53Speaker 7: it goes at the end of the day all you
- 27:54Speaker 7: can really hope and then you go at the end
- 27:56Speaker 7: of the day, what we so any any any scrubs
- 28:01Speaker 7: at the end of the day type things?
- 28:02Speaker 1: Okay, and I had another drinking game idea for people.
- 28:05Speaker 1: You're gonna get shit faced listening to this podcast. But
- 28:07Speaker 1: I got really excited in this episode when I when
- 28:09Speaker 1: I had a Snoop Dogg intern sighting, and I thought
- 28:11Speaker 1: it might be fun for fans to also do a
- 28:13Speaker 1: shot every time you see Snoop Dogg intern resident attending.
- 28:17Speaker 3: Well, it should start with Snoop Dogg, but then once
- 28:20Speaker 3: you know, Mickhead shows up and and and be doctor doc,
- 28:26Speaker 3: doctor oh Man, man, Colonel.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Doctor passed away, didn't.
- 28:31Speaker 4: He Colonel Doctor?
- 28:33Speaker 7: Just so what he knows is called Colonel Doctor because
- 28:35Speaker 7: he looks like the colonel from Kentucky pried Chicken.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Yeah, And my favorite thing about that, that's why.
- 28:41Speaker 7: You think he's I mean, it's funny that that's his nickname,
- 28:44Speaker 7: Colonel Doctor, and his name turns out to be Coleman Slowski,
- 28:48Speaker 7: which is cole Slaw.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Oh my god, here's what I like.
- 28:56Speaker 7: My favorite thing that you guys all liked that Zach
- 28:59Speaker 7: is the first one kind of that he noticed was
- 29:01Speaker 7: he had all these great background performers, and we wanted
- 29:04Speaker 7: the consistency of recognizing nurses and doctors, and so he
- 29:07Speaker 7: tried to have the same people come back. And then
- 29:09Speaker 7: because they were around, whether it was Coleman Slavsky, when
- 29:13Speaker 7: doctor Mickhead who ultimately I think murdered his spouse and
- 29:16Speaker 7: gag me on.
- 29:17Speaker 2: The show, Yes, and Colonel Doctor and Snoop dogg Beard
- 29:23Speaker 2: fac and the.
- 29:25Speaker 4: World's oldest intern Gloria, I think it's really But the
- 29:31Speaker 4: point is that even amongst the background people, they became
- 29:34Speaker 4: tears like a call sheet.
- 29:36Speaker 7: And I started noticing that I'd come into like the
- 29:38Speaker 7: background holding area, and there'd be all the background and
- 29:41Speaker 7: then there'd be the king shit background of those four
- 29:44Speaker 7: doing the equivalent of like drinking martinis as the ones
- 29:47Speaker 7: that had been the ones that have names to sit
- 29:50Speaker 7: around and going like we're fucking we're ruling this world.
- 29:53Speaker 1: And I loved it.
- 29:55Speaker 3: What was really cool was when you would trust them
- 29:57Speaker 3: with lines and stuff like that and they would deliver.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Like I remember, Mickhead had so many lines and you
- 30:03Speaker 3: gave him a storyline and everything, and it was because
- 30:06Speaker 3: you were like, yo, he delivers every time I give
- 30:08Speaker 3: him something.
- 30:08Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, A lot of folks were actors. They
- 30:12Speaker 1: just hadn't had a break yet. And you know, like
- 30:15Speaker 1: like any group of actors, some could act and some couldn't.
- 30:17Speaker 1: But I think Mickhead was one that was actually really good.
- 30:21Speaker 7: His backstory was Frank's backstory was a fascinating He was
- 30:23Speaker 7: a paid screenwriter that none of his even though he'd
- 30:27Speaker 7: sold a bunch of movies, none of them ever got made.
- 30:29Speaker 7: And you eventually reached the end of that career and
- 30:30Speaker 7: he was still plugging away writing and came by to
- 30:34Speaker 7: make dough and then when he was doing it, he
- 30:36Speaker 7: at least had a knowledge of film enough you know that.
- 30:38Speaker 7: He was good and subtle and he's like, what are
- 30:40Speaker 7: you making me into an actor for?
- 30:41Speaker 4: This is not my plan.
- 30:42Speaker 1: It was really fun well and mainly Henry delivered one
- 30:45Speaker 1: of the greatest lines in Scrubs history, where mahoes at,
- 30:51Speaker 1: I haven't seen them.
- 30:52Speaker 2: I haven't seen you know. I played golf with Mickhead
- 30:54Speaker 2: quite a bit. We played.
- 30:55Speaker 3: That's one of my golf buddies. And he still writes books.
- 30:58Speaker 3: He's a novelist, you know, he writes with his with
- 31:01Speaker 3: his wife and it's say hi for me man.
- 31:03Speaker 4: He was a nice man.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I definitely will. Let's take a break.
- 31:06Speaker 1: We'll be right back after these fine words.
- 31:11Speaker 2: You okay, So we're back. Yeah, oh yeah, No.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Bill, it's you know, and we don't do the full
- 31:22Speaker 1: song at the commercial breaks. Bill does the.
- 31:25Speaker 4: Song start whenever I say five to six seven eight.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Unfortunately Dan's got his finger on the trigger. And whenever
- 31:31Speaker 1: you say five hits, please.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Don't say five six.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Stop saying five to six eight.
- 31:38Speaker 4: That's my favorite. He should Dan should just be contractually
- 31:40Speaker 4: obligated to do it. Whenever he hears that.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Yeah, whenever Dan, he started, he started Dan, I have
- 31:48Speaker 1: the power to say, got it all right, Donald, you
- 31:54Speaker 1: were going to start us off. We're forty minutes and
- 31:56Speaker 1: we should probably talk about the TV show.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Okay.
- 31:58Speaker 3: So, first of all, Whiney Dancer was pretty good. I'm
- 32:02Speaker 3: gonna put that out there. I thought that was a
- 32:04Speaker 3: very funny nickname. Yes, I laughed very hard at that,
- 32:07Speaker 3: and I was mad that.
- 32:08Speaker 2: It didn't stick. But Scooter short for Scooter pie? Is
- 32:10Speaker 2: he even because he hates Scooter Pie?
- 32:14Speaker 4: There's two things.
- 32:15Speaker 7: It was hard for me to watch that story because
- 32:17Speaker 7: a Neil Flynn is funnier than the material he gave him,
- 32:20Speaker 7: you know what I mean in that one, because we
- 32:22Speaker 7: could have done a much funnier stuff with your nickname.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Uh.
- 32:25Speaker 7: And then b is I don't know why he's eating
- 32:29Speaker 7: a popsicle In that next one, he seemed to want
- 32:33Speaker 7: to be eating it, which made me really laugh.
- 32:35Speaker 4: And then the third one is I remember that because
- 32:38Speaker 4: we're you know, strapped for figured out a moment. Uh
- 32:41Speaker 4: at the end when someone finally calls you Scooter, which
- 32:44Speaker 4: is a moment I do like uh, and I go
- 32:47Speaker 4: it's revealed, Neil, and he's like, how should I celebrate?
- 32:49Speaker 7: I'm like I don't know, do some kind of dance
- 32:51Speaker 7: or Irish jigg or something. And that made me laugh
- 32:54Speaker 7: out loud because he committed to it, like good.
- 32:59Speaker 1: God, yeah he can, really he could. But Neil just
- 33:02Speaker 1: pulled out an r SHA because it looked pretty good.
- 33:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't. I don't think that he We had
- 33:06Speaker 4: planned that, you know, and you know we put the
- 33:09Speaker 4: music to it. We put the music to it. Afterwards.
- 33:11Speaker 2: It was really went straight river dance. He went to
- 33:13Speaker 2: straight river dance.
- 33:16Speaker 1: That was funny before.
- 33:18Speaker 2: That's also not us at that beach by the way.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to ask you, I don't know those
- 33:22Speaker 1: doubles because that's not my hair and I know.
- 33:23Speaker 2: That is your my head.
- 33:24Speaker 4: Also, yeah, no, I think we went and got that
- 33:27Speaker 4: without you guys.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Okay, but Donald's double is good my mind.
- 33:31Speaker 2: I alway ran now it doesn't look like my head.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Unique I'm going.
- 33:35Speaker 6: To do that.
- 33:35Speaker 1: I'm going to that Donald that looks like your head.
- 33:37Speaker 1: I'm at four four seconds if you're following.
- 33:39Speaker 2: I wish it was my head.
- 33:40Speaker 4: It is so not you guys, A and B.
- 33:46Speaker 2: You guys.
- 33:46Speaker 4: This is the show runner issue. And I don't know
- 33:48Speaker 4: if you guys have this.
- 33:50Speaker 2: What the on.
- 33:51Speaker 7: Fun thing about watching these shows for me is that
- 33:55Speaker 7: I just watched them for all the mistakes I made,
- 33:57Speaker 7: especially early and like even that stupid fantasy, I didn't
- 34:00Speaker 7: have a frontal shot coming back on you two, like
- 34:04Speaker 7: the flash out of.
- 34:04Speaker 4: It, So it was a weird transition, Like, ah, man,
- 34:07Speaker 4: it screwed that up too.
- 34:09Speaker 3: I still at the stage I think this is I
- 34:11Speaker 3: think this is such a funny episode. I laughed so
- 34:13Speaker 3: many times in this episode. So what you see is
- 34:17Speaker 3: your mess ups. What I see is you know, I
- 34:21Speaker 3: that That's how it always feel. Like that's how it
- 34:22Speaker 3: always is with people, you know what I mean? Like
- 34:24Speaker 3: we we make things and then we find the flaws
- 34:27Speaker 3: in them. But if you sit back and let other
- 34:29Speaker 3: people tell you how amazing it is, you'll be like, really,
- 34:32Speaker 3: I didn't see it.
- 34:32Speaker 2: You know what I mean? This again, that's another one.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Oh drink Bill. I laughed that you chose smooth jazz
- 34:39Speaker 1: from when we're sitting on the bench, unless that's another
- 34:42Speaker 1: track that's been changed.
- 34:43Speaker 4: But when I don't, I don't know, but I didn't
- 34:45Speaker 4: remember it. Look, I had my first weird thing.
- 34:48Speaker 7: I was giving you guys ship here at home for
- 34:50Speaker 7: not remembering any of this stuff. And uh, I wrote
- 34:54Speaker 7: this script by myself like at home to catch us.
- 34:58Speaker 4: Up, and h I didn't remember writing it. I didn't
- 35:02Speaker 4: remember what it was about till I watched it was
- 35:03Speaker 4: really weird.
- 35:04Speaker 8: So is that what?
- 35:04Speaker 1: Just talk to that for a second. So, so when
- 35:06Speaker 1: you're the showrunner, you're overseeing your writing staff having episodes,
- 35:11Speaker 1: and then of course you end up rewriting them a
- 35:12Speaker 1: lot yourself. But when you said you wrote this to
- 35:15Speaker 1: catch up, just to explain that to people the you know,
- 35:19Speaker 1: you in.
- 35:21Speaker 7: Comedy staffs especially, someone will go out and write a draft.
- 35:24Speaker 7: The whole staff will help kind of you know, you'll
- 35:26Speaker 7: outline it and do ou stuff. Whole staff will help
- 35:27Speaker 7: kind of punch it up. And then the showrunner of
- 35:31Speaker 7: any show that you've ever loved will usually do a
- 35:34Speaker 7: pass of it before it shoots, you know, just not
- 35:37Speaker 7: just out of arrogance, but out of wanting the show
- 35:40Speaker 7: to sound like it's from that one distinct voice. That's
- 35:42Speaker 7: why people over the years, you know, they noticed when
- 35:46Speaker 7: the showrunner on one of their favorite shows left for
- 35:48Speaker 7: a year, how it suddenly sounds different, you know. And
- 35:52Speaker 7: when you get caught and behind in writing, you know,
- 35:54Speaker 7: when you look at all the different stages, outline which
- 35:57Speaker 7: has to be approved by the showrunner, draft which gets
- 36:00Speaker 7: notes from the showrunner, rewrite with the whole staff, which
- 36:04Speaker 7: the showrunner does, you know what I mean. It's you
- 36:07Speaker 7: often can catch back up if you're behind writing. If
- 36:10Speaker 7: as the showrunner, you're like, hey.
- 36:11Speaker 4: While we're all doing this, I'll outline one on my
- 36:14Speaker 4: own and write it and then just drag all you
- 36:16Speaker 4: this whole gang and to punch it up really quick
- 36:18Speaker 4: and then we'll shoot it, you know. And so that
- 36:20Speaker 4: was one of those one.
- 36:22Speaker 7: And sometimes those, to tell you the truth in a
- 36:25Speaker 7: weird way, sometimes don't, aren't. Those aren't as good as
- 36:27Speaker 7: other episodes because showrunners don't have to listen to other
- 36:31Speaker 7: people's input. And sometimes and sometimes instead of the whole
- 36:34Speaker 7: group punching it up, you'll.
- 36:36Speaker 4: Just hand it in and go that's done.
- 36:38Speaker 7: Now. We're as long as we don't spend four days
- 36:39Speaker 7: trying to make it better. We're back on timing again,
- 36:43Speaker 7: you know, make twenty four episodes this year.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Well, you nailed it with this one, man.
- 36:46Speaker 3: This one has everything that you're looking for from you know,
- 36:50Speaker 3: from the drama to the comedy.
- 36:52Speaker 2: This was I laughed so many times at this episode.
- 36:57Speaker 4: There was a couple of things.
- 36:58Speaker 1: I really liked it, mate, you know want At one fourteen,
- 37:02Speaker 1: Neil is just boring a giant hole in the reception
- 37:05Speaker 1: desk for no, for no apparent reason. I was trying
- 37:07Speaker 1: to think about what Neil's doing.
- 37:09Speaker 4: Now, you know what, you know what that's for. This
- 37:11Speaker 4: is what you'll see early on, and you guys should
- 37:14Speaker 4: look for it.
- 37:15Speaker 7: There are certain things that exist solely because directors, once
- 37:19Speaker 7: they knew that they were allowed to have fun visually,
- 37:22Speaker 7: you know, on this particular show, would work backwards from
- 37:25Speaker 7: the shot they wanted, so that, without a doubt, was
- 37:28Speaker 7: somebody working backwards from in the script JD going hey,
- 37:33Speaker 7: uh and the jannit they're turning and being imposing, you
- 37:36Speaker 7: know what I mean, and saying, oh, you know what
- 37:37Speaker 7: would be cool is this giant ten foot drill in
- 37:39Speaker 7: JD's face.
- 37:40Speaker 1: I know, I know, but I'm just laughing it. I'm
- 37:42Speaker 1: just laughing because I like to just rationalize things. I'm like, well,
- 37:45Speaker 1: what assignment did he have with that drill in that
- 37:47Speaker 1: reception desk? I guess he was adding a new hole
- 37:50Speaker 1: for a new phone line or something.
- 37:51Speaker 4: Well, dude.
- 37:52Speaker 7: We used to get It's so funny if you think
- 37:54Speaker 7: about this in terms for writers. At first, it would
- 37:56Speaker 7: annoy us when we would see you know, uh, directors
- 38:00Speaker 7: came up with for like why is the janitor there?
- 38:02Speaker 4: How is he going to be imposing?
- 38:04Speaker 7: And then when we would get trapped, we'd start making
- 38:06Speaker 7: jokes out of it. And one of my favorite ones,
- 38:08Speaker 7: we needed the janitor in there and we didn't know why,
- 38:12Speaker 7: and so we had him say I don't really have
- 38:14Speaker 7: anything to do.
- 38:14Speaker 4: I'm mopping the rug, and then I love you.
- 38:18Speaker 7: I don't know if you guys remember then the rest
- 38:21Speaker 7: of that scene, when you guys walked across that rug,
- 38:23Speaker 7: you would hear squishy sounds.
- 38:28Speaker 4: Like why is that guy mob on the rug?
- 38:30Speaker 1: I love that. Neil would Neil would take it seriously
- 38:32Speaker 1: and he'd be like, I why would my character be
- 38:34Speaker 1: mopping in a carpeted room? Yeah, you know, it's just
- 38:38Speaker 1: everybody wants their motivation, you know, of course, but Donald
- 38:41Speaker 1: pointed out I think and what Donald was?
- 38:43Speaker 2: You mentioned that?
- 38:45Speaker 7: You know?
- 38:45Speaker 1: I never realized either. But the janitor feels like he's
- 38:47Speaker 1: a pretty good janitor, right, I mean, he's absolutely I
- 38:50Speaker 1: never realized until rewatching it. But like, even though he
- 38:53Speaker 1: spends his entire existence fuggy with me, you know, he
- 38:56Speaker 1: does his best. He's pretty much a one man band
- 38:58Speaker 1: except for that that that Troy Troy, Oh my god,
- 39:01Speaker 1: nice to holes the except for Troy and then Martin.
- 39:05Speaker 7: Yeah, Troy was the best because Troy frustrated the janitor
- 39:10Speaker 7: to no end.
- 39:10Speaker 4: My favorite thing was when Troy's like, I'm gonna go
- 39:12Speaker 4: beat you up. He's like, that's not how we do it, man,
- 39:14Speaker 4: It's not how we do it. It was literally like,
- 39:18Speaker 4: we're better than that, man. I enjoyed working with Flynn and.
- 39:23Speaker 1: I forgot about the frozen effect thing Bill, and it's
- 39:26Speaker 1: really cool. It's a two forty three. It's really done
- 39:28Speaker 1: well and I don't even remember how we pulled that off.
- 39:31Speaker 1: But the foreground and background are frozen. Yeah, and whoever
- 39:35Speaker 1: that was executed was really good. And then we go
- 39:37Speaker 1: to the guy who's then on the other side of things.
- 39:39Speaker 1: We go to the guy who's just frozen and doing
- 39:42Speaker 1: a horrible job trying to be frozen without anything.
- 39:44Speaker 7: I know, you know, you know what's really interesting is
- 39:47Speaker 7: it one of the things you'll see in the first year,
- 39:50Speaker 7: much like the sound effects that you guys notice is
- 39:52Speaker 7: they're drifting away.
- 39:53Speaker 4: I think they're almost gone. I'm hoping.
- 39:55Speaker 1: We keep laughing, we keep laughing that that you say,
- 39:58Speaker 1: they're almost going away, and then we hear and then there'.
- 40:02Speaker 4: Jingle bells. Yeah, jingle balls balls.
- 40:05Speaker 7: But that The other thing that you have to look
- 40:07Speaker 7: for is we used to because writers love to procrastinate,
- 40:11Speaker 7: We used to have hours of talks about rules, you know,
- 40:15Speaker 7: and the rules of the world, and uh, this broke
- 40:20Speaker 7: one of them, and we made it right after this
- 40:22Speaker 7: was you can't still be in a fantasy after you're
- 40:24Speaker 7: out of a fantasy.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Oh, you know, because then wow, after you flash out,
- 40:29Speaker 4: it has to be real.
- 40:30Speaker 7: The one the conversation that tortured people forever and we
- 40:33Speaker 7: didn't show the answer to it to like the six
- 40:35Speaker 7: or seventh Year, is when Jad has these long fantasies,
- 40:38Speaker 7: what's he doing?
- 40:39Speaker 4: Is he just standing there? Yeah?
- 40:41Speaker 1: What's happening?
- 40:42Speaker 7: And eventually eventually we had you talking to the todd
- 40:47Speaker 7: in like the sixth or seventh Year when you go,
- 40:51Speaker 7: h oh, that makes me think about trolls and you
- 40:54Speaker 7: go like this and then rob the better part of
- 40:59Speaker 7: like thirty second and then you're like, and.
- 41:01Speaker 4: That's why you shouldn't buy blah blah blahs or whatever.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean, well you started. It's funny because
- 41:07Speaker 1: the last time you're wrong. We talked about how when I,
- 41:09Speaker 1: when I came out of a fantasy, I had agreed
- 41:11Speaker 1: to buy Nurse Roberts dead husband's a bowling shoes and
- 41:15Speaker 1: I didn't know because I was in a fantasy land.
- 41:17Speaker 1: But I forgot. You didn't really keep that that little
- 41:19Speaker 1: thing going that I would have been a funny runner
- 41:22Speaker 1: if like JD, because he's in a fantasy, ends up
- 41:25Speaker 1: agreeing to all this random shit.
- 41:27Speaker 4: We didn't have any of the rules yet, man, and
- 41:29Speaker 4: we were trying.
- 41:30Speaker 7: People used to argue all like the biggest argument that
- 41:32Speaker 7: you guys can look for in the writer's room in
- 41:34Speaker 7: at eight up hours the first year was was JD's
- 41:38Speaker 7: voiceover omniscient? Did he know what was going on in
- 41:42Speaker 7: the other stories and could narrate them? Or did we
- 41:45Speaker 7: have to write it so general as if he's talking
- 41:47Speaker 7: about himself but doesn't know about those stories. And it
- 41:50Speaker 7: used to drive people insane?
- 41:52Speaker 3: Right, were we a hit at this time? At this
- 41:54Speaker 3: point where we like, did we get the back nine
- 41:56Speaker 3: at this point.
- 41:58Speaker 4: Yeah, the first the.
- 41:59Speaker 7: Show, the show did so well coming out of the gate,
- 42:04Speaker 7: the first year that it was considered a hit, and
- 42:07Speaker 7: then the second year they made a mistake in my view,
- 42:12Speaker 7: and h the first year of the show, it was
- 42:14Speaker 7: sometimes increasing on its lead in and just crushing, and
- 42:18Speaker 7: you're they should have kept it there forever. And then
- 42:22Speaker 7: the set they said, it's such a big show for us.
- 42:24Speaker 7: Next year, we're going to put it after Friends. And
- 42:27Speaker 7: the combination of no show could retain eighty five percent
- 42:32Speaker 7: of Friends' audience. It was a cultural you know, lightning bolt,
- 42:38Speaker 7: and so you know, we were like the eighth rank.
- 42:41Speaker 4: Show in the country.
- 42:42Speaker 7: But they're like, you're only retaining like sixty seven percent
- 42:45Speaker 7: of their audience. So we're and just so you know,
- 42:49Speaker 7: anytime they want to do a forty minute episode, we're
- 42:51Speaker 7: going to make it supersized, and you guys will be
- 42:53Speaker 7: moved or not on or whatever. And they never they
- 42:58Speaker 7: should have they didn't know the show. They should have
- 43:00Speaker 7: put us after Friends and left us there in perpetuity.
- 43:03Speaker 7: The sho would have been bigger and bigger, but instead
- 43:05Speaker 7: they put nine thousand different shows, one after another after Friends.
- 43:09Speaker 7: Each time pulling them when they don't get the same
- 43:12Speaker 7: ratings as this giant monster juggernaut and never established a
- 43:16Speaker 7: new successful show after that show in its entire existence.
- 43:19Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, not only that, it was also the
- 43:22Speaker 3: end of Friends too, and then Joey came right after that,
- 43:25Speaker 3: and then we followed Joey for a little.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Bit, and I followed it.
- 43:28Speaker 4: It doesn't work either.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Now, yeah, we followed Joey for like a little bit.
- 43:31Speaker 1: And then for those of you who don't know what
- 43:35Speaker 1: the networks want, Bill, please correct me if I'm wrong.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Is they want you to hold that is to say,
- 43:40Speaker 1: keep eighty five percent of the lead in shows audience,
- 43:44Speaker 1: which is pretty impossible if it's Friends and it's the
- 43:47Speaker 1: biggest show ever. And if you go below that then
- 43:49Speaker 1: they kind of start thinking about moving you or losing you.
- 43:52Speaker 7: Right right, Oh yeah, Well, the only difference is they
- 43:54Speaker 7: would have went because the show is so well reviewed
- 43:56Speaker 7: and was doing really well. If they owned our show,
- 43:59Speaker 7: this is all boring business, they would have kept us
- 44:01Speaker 7: on there forever, going, hey, we'll keep this on forever
- 44:03Speaker 7: and make tons of money for ourselves.
- 44:04Speaker 4: But since they didn't own.
- 44:05Speaker 7: It, the second it didn't immediately become bigger than Friends.
- 44:09Speaker 7: They said, let's try some shows that we owned to
- 44:11Speaker 7: see if they become bigger than Friends.
- 44:13Speaker 3: And just kind of feel like that was I feel
- 44:14Speaker 3: like Friends was the end of tg of not TGIF,
- 44:18Speaker 3: but that Thursday night lineup.
- 44:19Speaker 4: Must see, must see Thursdays. I feel like that's yes,
- 44:24Speaker 4: you know, because you'll like this. You guys should get it.
- 44:27Speaker 7: And I interrupt him, Sorry, Donald, but Jeff and Gold,
- 44:30Speaker 7: who is an NBC exec, has a must See Thursday
- 44:34Speaker 7: poster in his office. He's proud of when it was
- 44:37Speaker 7: US thirty Rock, the office and parks and rec We're
- 44:40Speaker 7: all Thursday and that's that was a cool That was
- 44:42Speaker 7: a cool lineup.
- 44:44Speaker 2: Yeah, at one point that was a Thursday Night.
- 44:46Speaker 7: I think it was I can't remember if I have
- 44:48Speaker 7: the no, it might have been Earl, but it was
- 44:50Speaker 7: US thirty Rock Office and either Earl or you know,
- 44:56Speaker 7: but it was He's like, that was total, a total
- 44:58Speaker 7: must they were still doing.
- 45:00Speaker 3: That's a pretty good muss seat Thursday. Man, that's a
- 45:02Speaker 3: pretty must seat Thursday.
- 45:04Speaker 1: Shall we talk about Nicole Sullivan? Guys, absolutely, Bill tell
- 45:08Speaker 1: us about obviously, you know a lot of people know
- 45:12Speaker 1: knew Nicole Sullivan from mad TV and how did how
- 45:15Speaker 1: did you choose her? Were you friends with her?
- 45:17Speaker 7: She was, Yeah, she was another you know, we brought
- 45:19Speaker 7: people through our world that were friends of mine that
- 45:22Speaker 7: I knew were super talented.
- 45:24Speaker 4: We wanted to have her in this world because not
- 45:29Speaker 4: only is she really funny, but we knew she could
- 45:31Speaker 4: actually act.
- 45:32Speaker 7: And we had, you know, kind of the idea beforehand,
- 45:37Speaker 7: whether it was with Brendan Fraser or her or Missus Wilke,
- 45:42Speaker 7: that there were sometimes patients that we would say, let's
- 45:45Speaker 7: bring them in and know that they're going to come back,
- 45:48Speaker 7: you know. And so we didn't know right then that
- 45:51Speaker 7: Nicole was going to die, but we knew she was
- 45:53Speaker 7: going to come back, and uh so we were setting
- 45:56Speaker 7: her up for the crap that you know journey that
- 45:59Speaker 7: her person went down, you know, in a cool way.
- 46:02Speaker 7: I think the most fun way to do that. Donald
- 46:05Speaker 7: said something about it is you sneak it up on people.
- 46:08Speaker 7: You introduce somebody as something that's just going to be
- 46:10Speaker 7: funny in a goof to see them, and you get
- 46:12Speaker 7: people emotionally invested. So when there's stuff, when the wheels
- 46:15Speaker 7: come off, people are just you know, emotionally affected by that.
- 46:19Speaker 3: That was something that you know, uh, and it just
- 46:23Speaker 3: shows how great of a writer you are. You know,
- 46:26Speaker 3: I'm sure you're you know this already, but he does like.
- 46:30Speaker 4: A like a like a Michael Jaminski of writing.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Almost you said you you would give everybody clues.
- 46:38Speaker 3: The clues are there, and if you're really paying attention,
- 46:42Speaker 3: you know, if you're really really paying attention, when it happens,
- 46:46Speaker 3: it's not that big of a surprise like it's for
- 46:48Speaker 3: we foreshadowed so much.
- 46:50Speaker 7: Yeah, you talked about that, and I really appreciated it
- 46:53Speaker 7: because the way our staff worked that I thought was
- 46:55Speaker 7: cool before in the pre production every year before we
- 46:58Speaker 7: wrote episodes, we talked about what big things, you know,
- 47:03Speaker 7: arcs and stuff we wanted to do.
- 47:04Speaker 4: Like we'd say, hey, we want Turk and Car to
- 47:08Speaker 4: get engaged, but we want it to be a little
- 47:12Speaker 4: bit of a rocky road. And then we would work backwards,
- 47:15Speaker 4: same way. We'd go, hey, we want Johnny c to
- 47:17Speaker 4: end up with his X who he's never moved past.
- 47:18Speaker 4: Now he's a more Maturesian. We wor work backwards. We're
- 47:20Speaker 4: gonna kill Brendan Fraser.
- 47:22Speaker 7: It's worked backwards, and then it would almost seem when
- 47:24Speaker 7: we're doing these initial episodes.
- 47:26Speaker 4: Since we had already plotted out these.
- 47:28Speaker 7: Arcs, it was very easy to go, all right, so
- 47:31Speaker 7: if Nicole Sullivan's gonna eventually die, and let's establish her
- 47:38Speaker 7: here as a fun, neurotic person that you think is
- 47:41Speaker 7: just being kinde of hypochondriac, and then do you know
- 47:44Speaker 7: what I mean? So it is set up because we
- 47:47Speaker 7: were working backwards from the big episodes that we wanted
- 47:49Speaker 7: to accomplish.
- 47:50Speaker 4: Was part of the fun.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good writing to me.
- 47:52Speaker 3: That's because whenever you can look back and say to yourself,
- 47:56Speaker 3: was there and I didn't see it? Right?
- 47:58Speaker 2: I feel like, you know, Kaiser So's you know.
- 48:02Speaker 4: Yeah, it is the it's the trick of it all.
- 48:05Speaker 1: That's the trick is that is you know you're not
- 48:07Speaker 1: gonna the audience isn't gonna have the heartbreak for an asshole.
- 48:10Speaker 1: You know, you got to have the audience fall in
- 48:12Speaker 1: love with them and go, oh, I love listener. She's wacky,
- 48:14Speaker 1: she's silly, She's I want to be her friend, she's
- 48:17Speaker 1: you want to you want to fall in love with
- 48:19Speaker 1: the person before Bill kills them.
- 48:22Speaker 4: It was the it was the one trick we went
- 48:24Speaker 4: back to a lot.
- 48:25Speaker 7: It was too mean, was we knew in twenty two
- 48:27Speaker 7: minutes it was too hard to get people to love
- 48:29Speaker 7: someone and then kill them. So we're like, all right,
- 48:31Speaker 7: let's bring them into another story. And our goal is
- 48:34Speaker 7: not only to do a successful story, but make people
- 48:37Speaker 7: like this person so that when they die, we're uh screwed.
- 48:43Speaker 7: The only time we thought we pulled it off, that
- 48:46Speaker 7: we killed someone people cared about in one episode. It
- 48:50Speaker 7: ties to this one because this is me being a dummy.
- 48:53Speaker 7: So Nicole Sullivan, you know, one of the bride'smaids at
- 48:56Speaker 7: my wedding, old friend she I'm not good at naming characters.
- 49:00Speaker 7: She played Jill Tracy, and uh, and then I didn't
- 49:04Speaker 7: realize untill later Jill Tracy, who's Tim Hobert at the
- 49:08Speaker 7: executive producer, one of them a great actress in her
- 49:12Speaker 7: own right. Not only had I not put her on
- 49:14Speaker 7: the show, but I named another character after and somebody
- 49:20Speaker 7: else played it. So then Jill Tracy came and played
- 49:23Speaker 7: the woman who died in a Broadway musical.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Waiting for my real life to be gamelin.
- 49:30Speaker 2: On a clear day when I can't see.
- 49:36Speaker 4: Very long?
- 49:42Speaker 1: So did she call you? Did? Did you real, jail
- 49:45Speaker 1: Jill Tracy call you And.
- 49:46Speaker 7: What was she like?
- 49:48Speaker 4: No, Tim is just such a good buddy.
- 49:50Speaker 7: I realized that, you know, as it happened, and I'm like, oh,
- 49:53Speaker 7: I'm a piece of ship. We got to make sure
- 49:54Speaker 7: we get you in there. And she was luckily also
- 49:56Speaker 7: a Broadway level singer and had done a musical theater
- 49:58Speaker 7: her whole life.
- 49:59Speaker 1: You know, she was great, Hey, I'm looking at these
- 50:01Speaker 1: blackberries and I remember that this was like the time
- 50:03Speaker 1: that blackberries came out and Bill, as I recall, you
- 50:06Speaker 1: gave us all our first blackberries as a present.
- 50:09Speaker 4: Yeah, it gave them to everybody as a Christmas gift.
- 50:11Speaker 1: And I have a memory I remember you like, we
- 50:13Speaker 1: were like, what is this so you you can type
- 50:16Speaker 1: on it?
- 50:17Speaker 3: Yeah that I wrote that down. Nicole Sullivan says email
- 50:20Speaker 3: as we're talking. That kind of dates the show.
- 50:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I know, I know it was so weird.
- 50:28Speaker 1: That mean, right when they all came out. I mean
- 50:30Speaker 1: that's we were like, state of the art. She's got
- 50:31Speaker 1: a state of the art gadget.
- 50:33Speaker 7: Getting back to the show, that was one of my
- 50:35Speaker 7: favorite things because we really wanted everybody had their thing
- 50:39Speaker 7: to overcome on this show. And we really wanted Sarah
- 50:42Speaker 7: Chalk's character to overcome how hard she always is on herself,
- 50:48Speaker 7: and you know how much she buries herself psychologically and
- 50:51Speaker 7: on an unhealthy way with all her work. And my
- 50:54Speaker 7: favorite scene in this besides the Judy and Zach went
- 50:58Speaker 7: out in the rain, was Sarah and Johnny C with
- 51:02Speaker 7: Johnny C doing some really subtle stuff when he says,
- 51:05Speaker 7: go ahead and make your case why Jill Tracy can
- 51:07Speaker 7: stay in the hospital, and Sarah is saying, you know,
- 51:10Speaker 7: sometimes you get overwhelmed, and it's this and this, and
- 51:13Speaker 7: John McGinley is without doing anything big, proving to her
- 51:17Speaker 7: that she does the very same thing to herself.
- 51:18Speaker 4: I love that moment.
- 51:20Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 51:20Speaker 4: The reason I loved it as a writer was it
- 51:22Speaker 4: wasn't something that Sarah was necessarily doing in this episode,
- 51:26Speaker 4: but she had done it in every episode up to
- 51:28Speaker 4: this one.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:29Speaker 3: I wrote that down that that's such a great moment.
- 51:32Speaker 3: That scene is so awesome, and Sarah pulls it off
- 51:35Speaker 3: really well where she's talking about you know, she's talking
- 51:38Speaker 3: about Nicole's character and then and then you know, Johnny says,
- 51:41Speaker 3: but have you looked at how you have you looked
- 51:43Speaker 3: at yourself.
- 51:44Speaker 2: I know, I'm a skink. And then she.
- 51:49Speaker 7: She's like, and she's like and then she'll do anything.
- 51:51Speaker 7: She's such a people pleas her for anyone. I think
- 51:52Speaker 7: he says, will you go clean up my dog shit
- 51:54Speaker 7: and take it to get it?
- 52:00Speaker 1: She's really good in that scene.
- 52:01Speaker 3: Oh but it cuts right from that into you pulling
- 52:04Speaker 3: up in the cab, and that's where I got pissed off,
- 52:07Speaker 3: because right there up like, no, not now, jam but
- 52:12Speaker 3: it's but it marries so well, you know what I mean,
- 52:16Speaker 3: it's drunk out.
- 52:17Speaker 7: And by the way, and then the parents did in
- 52:19Speaker 7: this one. The pairings we did in this show made
- 52:22Speaker 7: me think of another question. I answered you guys in
- 52:23Speaker 7: the previous episode, because I believe Kelso calls you Turk
- 52:29Speaker 7: in this episode because you guys are having a battle,
- 52:31Speaker 7: and he.
- 52:32Speaker 2: Did another episode too, he did it.
- 52:34Speaker 7: But that's why it's important. It's important to know that
- 52:39Speaker 7: that's why we do believe he thinks your name is Turkleton.
- 52:43Speaker 7: But that's why we got to the logic with the
- 52:45Speaker 7: writers that he thinks your name is Turk Turkleton. When
- 52:49Speaker 7: we said, when we said, you know, he thinks her
- 52:52Speaker 7: name is doctor Turkleton.
- 52:54Speaker 4: You know, in the writers you fight about everything writer's room.
- 52:57Speaker 4: A lot of the writers were like, he can't, he's
- 52:58Speaker 4: called him Turk before. And then somebody's like, well, then
- 53:01Speaker 4: he thinks his name is Turk Turkleton.
- 53:05Speaker 2: That's one of the best.
- 53:07Speaker 3: And to this day, to this day, to this day,
- 53:10Speaker 3: there are a lot of there are a lot of
- 53:12Speaker 3: Scrubs fans that know, you know, Christopher Turk is the name,
- 53:16Speaker 3: but there are some that honestly believe Turk Turkleton is
- 53:19Speaker 3: the character's name.
- 53:21Speaker 7: You know what else, by the way, came up randomly
- 53:23Speaker 7: is somebody asked me after why you were named Gandhi,
- 53:27Speaker 7: Like why doctor Coxon name check to you is Gandhi?
- 53:30Speaker 2: Because I was a bold head guy. It wasn't just that.
- 53:32Speaker 4: It was because I was concurrently looking at cartoons and
- 53:36Speaker 4: okaying the character design with Chris and Phil for Clone
- 53:40Speaker 4: High and the Gandhi character. They had him with a
- 53:43Speaker 4: hip go t because he was a young teen version
- 53:46Speaker 4: and whatever, and I'm like, oh, ship.
- 53:48Speaker 2: We should go I do. We were typically going to
- 53:51Speaker 2: talk about that right now. Let's just go to commercial
- 53:53Speaker 2: real quick.
- 53:53Speaker 5: Okay, sure, commercial, Okay, we're back.
- 54:08Speaker 2: Steph is in the house, y'all. Steph is in the house. Steph,
- 54:11Speaker 2: Steph is in the house.
- 54:13Speaker 1: All right, Steph is in the house. But we're just
- 54:15Speaker 1: gonna finish the Clone High chat. So Steph.
- 54:17Speaker 2: Okay, so let's get back into Clone High. Dude. You now,
- 54:21Speaker 2: had Phil and Chris done anything before this?
- 54:24Speaker 4: Or or they were barely they were barely getting their
- 54:27Speaker 4: careers started. They were young animators from for Disney that
- 54:31Speaker 4: went to Dartmouth and we're also very funny and we're
- 54:34Speaker 4: just starting their career as kind of comedy writer animated.
- 54:37Speaker 4: They had done nothing.
- 54:38Speaker 7: It was like the first project that I supervised someone
- 54:41Speaker 7: else the way I was supervised.
- 54:42Speaker 4: And now there are two guys that are gonna give
- 54:44Speaker 4: me and you and Steph and Joelle a job.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Eventually, I pray that they give.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Me Donald wyt you explain the context, because not everyone's
- 54:52Speaker 1: gonna know what the hell are Okay.
- 54:53Speaker 3: So Chris and Phil have gone on to create movies
- 54:57Speaker 3: like twenty one Jump Street, twenty two Street, the Lego
- 55:00Speaker 3: Mago movie, the.
- 55:01Speaker 2: Best probably the best Spider Man movie ever.
- 55:04Speaker 4: Into the Spider Verse.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
- 55:08Speaker 4: Yes, they were the animators, directors writers of that as well.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Yes, they've gone on to do some amazing things.
- 55:14Speaker 3: But in the beginning, before this all happened, there was
- 55:16Speaker 3: a little show called Clone High, which Bill was an
- 55:19Speaker 3: executive producer on, And while we were making scrubs in
- 55:24Speaker 3: the basement, they were doing all their recordings.
- 55:26Speaker 1: And in the mental war in the mental ward, I believe.
- 55:29Speaker 4: And because the writers we hid to save money. We
- 55:32Speaker 4: hid our writing staff of that show in the hospital.
- 55:35Speaker 7: And then you guys just casually started to notice other
- 55:38Speaker 7: writers around the commissary every day, eating step and just
- 55:41Speaker 7: hanging out.
- 55:42Speaker 3: But they put us in the show too, So I
- 55:44Speaker 3: got an opportunity to play two really cool characters in
- 55:47Speaker 3: that were.
- 55:48Speaker 4: You I George Washington Carver, which I was George, and.
- 55:52Speaker 3: I was also Toots, who was Joanavoc's father in law
- 55:56Speaker 3: or something like that.
- 55:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a blind It was a blind former
- 55:58Speaker 4: jazz man.
- 55:59Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 55:59Speaker 7: Yeah, Yeah.
- 56:00Speaker 4: It's so weird because all a bunch of Clone High nerds.
- 56:03Speaker 7: I love Big Mouth, but Toots is very much like
- 56:06Speaker 7: the jazzy ghost that they have in that cartoon Big Mouth.
- 56:10Speaker 1: You know, are you guys bringing it back in some way? Bill?
- 56:14Speaker 4: I'm not at liberty to discuss that.
- 56:15Speaker 1: Yet, No, I stumbled across something top secret audience.
- 56:19Speaker 2: That would be awesome.
- 56:20Speaker 4: That's a good tease.
- 56:21Speaker 1: I was in it too, but I don't know who.
- 56:23Speaker 1: I played a lot.
- 56:25Speaker 2: You weren't in it a lot.
- 56:26Speaker 1: I don't minimize my part. I did occur.
- 56:29Speaker 7: I did it was it was such a cool college
- 56:31Speaker 7: filmmaking type atmosphere, which is what Scrubs was.
- 56:33Speaker 4: Anyways, that you guys would be shooting scenes and we
- 56:36Speaker 4: would literally go, hey, do you mind while you're eating
- 56:39Speaker 4: to walk downstairs and record a voice being a cartoon character,
- 56:42Speaker 4: and you guys were also nice about it.
- 56:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:44Speaker 2: Well, I loved working on that show Man. That was
- 56:47Speaker 2: a lot of fun.
- 56:47Speaker 1: I was Paul Revere, Joelle is telling so Paul Revere
- 56:50Speaker 1: is an important character everybody.
- 56:52Speaker 3: Yeah, but that was like one episode had a bigger
- 56:55Speaker 3: You had a bigger You had a bigger one when
- 56:57Speaker 3: you were selling a weird energy paste with Sarah Talk
- 57:00Speaker 3: and Marilyn Manson came in and saying the food Pyramid song,
- 57:03Speaker 3: it's very weird. Yeah, dude, I just remember being I
- 57:05Speaker 3: remember being there, and this is the first time I
- 57:07Speaker 3: met Mandy Moore.
- 57:08Speaker 2: She did a guest spot on the show.
- 57:10Speaker 1: I met Uh, I've never remember what shall we go to, Steph?
- 57:14Speaker 2: I met Tom Green? That was cool. That was the
- 57:17Speaker 2: first time I've ever met Tom Green. And he was
- 57:18Speaker 2: on fire at the time, and I was on it.
- 57:21Speaker 4: Steph was on I think.
- 57:23Speaker 3: And also we have a caller, guys, our caller has
- 57:27Speaker 3: has finally we're gonna let her talk.
- 57:29Speaker 1: Okadies and gentlemen, please welcome Steph.
- 57:34Speaker 6: Bill.
- 57:36Speaker 1: Bill's counting into everything. Dan, turn off the theme song, Steph.
- 57:42Speaker 4: At any point that you want to hear that awesome song,
- 57:45Speaker 4: just say five to six seven eight.
- 57:49Speaker 2: It's official.
- 57:51Speaker 3: Anytime you say five six seven eight, maybe wait three
- 57:56Speaker 3: whole minutes.
- 57:57Speaker 8: So I think it's only just right. Okay, five six
- 58:03Speaker 8: seven eight song?
- 58:05Speaker 1: Okay, but not the whole song.
- 58:06Speaker 7: Not the whole song.
- 58:07Speaker 1: Damn stop it, stop it.
- 58:08Speaker 2: Do you want to do the tag at the end? Stuff?
- 58:12Speaker 2: I don't know?
- 58:13Speaker 1: Give us the teg.
- 58:18Speaker 6: You got?
- 58:18Speaker 4: Good boy?
- 58:19Speaker 1: All right, this this has all gone to ship Steph.
- 58:21Speaker 1: What's your question?
- 58:23Speaker 6: So I'm finishing up my second year of medical school,
- 58:27Speaker 6: which is in part due to scrubs.
- 58:30Speaker 8: So basically, yeah, super funny story.
- 58:35Speaker 6: I alluded to this in my personal statement, but left
- 58:37Speaker 6: out certain details because I didn't want them to not
- 58:39Speaker 6: take me seriously.
- 58:40Speaker 8: But basically, my mom is a surgeon.
- 58:44Speaker 6: So when I was growing up, I saw like, you know,
- 58:46Speaker 6: pictures of her job and stuff like that, and I
- 58:49Speaker 6: thought it looked awful.
- 58:50Speaker 8: I was like, I have no idea how you do
- 58:52Speaker 8: what you do? She was a breast cancer surgeon, so
- 58:54Speaker 8: I was like, that's disgusting, Like, how do you look
- 58:56Speaker 8: at boobs all day?
- 58:57Speaker 6: So weird?
- 58:58Speaker 8: I never am going into medicine.
- 59:00Speaker 2: How do you look at boobs all day?
- 59:01Speaker 4: That's just I don't know, it's easier if you're not
- 59:04Speaker 4: a medical professional. Continue, I got it.
- 59:06Speaker 6: Yeah, So I started watching Scrubs maybe like I don't
- 59:10Speaker 6: even remember when, maybe in middle school, and I related
- 59:13Speaker 6: to Elliott's character on such a spiritual level that I
- 59:17Speaker 6: was like, this looks really fun. Maybe I will go
- 59:19Speaker 6: into medicine. And since then kind of became more legitimate.
- 59:23Speaker 6: But definitely the first thing that piqued my interest was Scrubs.
- 59:26Speaker 6: So thank you guys.
- 59:28Speaker 2: Do you use the word frick a lot?
- 59:32Speaker 8: I kind of graduated to the U version.
- 59:35Speaker 6: But.
- 59:37Speaker 4: Sometimes I mean, I gotta say I want to interject
- 59:41Speaker 4: stuff because that means so much to me because we
- 59:46Speaker 4: wanted to make sure that medical personnel seemed like heroes
- 59:48Speaker 4: and the job seemed like fun.
- 59:50Speaker 7: And I just was talking to the real JD last
- 59:53Speaker 7: night and his wife Dolly, who Elliot's based on, and
- 59:58Speaker 7: their favorite thing is is to consider you know that
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: they might have had a tiny part in some people
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: kind of embracing medicine as a career because it means.
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: So much to them.
- 1:00:08Speaker 7: That's A and B for those of you, they are
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: just listenings that you can't see. Steph could easily have
- 1:00:15Speaker 7: played Elliott just so you guys.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Know, she's elliot S.
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: She's elliot S both in her mannerisms and her appearance.
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: And I almost, by the way, this is the thing
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: that I have.
- 1:00:28Speaker 7: To watch out for late in life because I'm much
- 1:00:30Speaker 7: older than all these people. But I almost said, I
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: am here talking to a young Sarah Chalk. But Sarah
- 1:00:34Speaker 7: Chalk is still very young, So I did not.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: Say that Sarah is not a old person at all.
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: Yes, my God's school friends all tell me, all the
- 1:00:43Speaker 6: ones that watch Scrubs religiously are all like you have
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: the same luck that she does. When you guys, did
- 1:00:49Speaker 6: the episode of Sarah Chalk. How like the crazy stories
- 1:00:52Speaker 6: that come out of nowhere. You're like, there's no way
- 1:00:54Speaker 6: that happened to you on a Monday.
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: That's me, Like, yeah, I was watching that.
- 1:01:00Speaker 7: I think that that that story that Zach and Donald
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: told led us to write a story in which he
- 1:01:04Speaker 7: bought a new car.
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: In every thirty seconds, someone someone took another door off.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: That would happen to Sarah.
- 1:01:12Speaker 6: The best part of that episode is when the grumpy
- 1:01:15Speaker 6: radiologists is like, thanks for stopping by and don't forget
- 1:01:18Speaker 6: your car doors, Like, you know what.
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: You're a real fan. This will make you laugh. And
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: I don't even know if Donald and Zach remember it.
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: Different things from different episodes would stick on set and
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: people would say them over and over and I never
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: could predict what it was.
- 1:01:36Speaker 7: And I don't know Zach Donald, if you guys remember
- 1:01:39Speaker 7: what it was from this one. But it was a
- 1:01:40Speaker 7: made up flavor of smoothie that you guys kept saying
- 1:01:43Speaker 7: for weeks.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: Orange google.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: Wait, which I remember that, What.
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: Flavor do you want? I'll have a fraspberry OLiS an
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: orange goo go.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: I believe that. I believe Bill. I believe that came
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: from in the writer's rooms. You would have the assistance
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: do like a smoothie run and you'd all be like
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: calling out weird jama juice flavors.
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: Yes, you make up fake flavors, and just to torture
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: that poor young people working on hourly waves.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: Yeah, and so range goo go with immunity.
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: All right, stuff we're taking.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: Come on, come on, that's your time. It's your time. Stuff,
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: it's your time.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: It's your time. Stuff, goonies, go ahead. Stuff.
- 1:02:28Speaker 6: So it's actually kind of perfect that Bill is here
- 1:02:31Speaker 6: on this episode because it kind of relates to the
- 1:02:33Speaker 6: behind the scenes part of it. But since I watched
- 1:02:36Speaker 6: the show so much, a lot of the times when
- 1:02:38Speaker 6: I'm studying, i'll recognize words that will like remind me
- 1:02:42Speaker 6: of certain scenes of the show. And I know you
- 1:02:45Speaker 6: guys talked about like trying to make it really medically accurate.
- 1:02:48Speaker 6: It is reverifying, but it's also really funny, which I
- 1:02:53Speaker 6: think is hard to do with medical vernacular if you're
- 1:02:57Speaker 6: not really.
- 1:02:58Speaker 8: Used to it.
- 1:02:58Speaker 6: So I was wondering if there is a specific member
- 1:03:02Speaker 6: of the writing team that was, you know, kind of
- 1:03:05Speaker 6: crucial in making the medical scenes, specifically the funny ones,
- 1:03:09Speaker 6: because I think it would be kind of hard to
- 1:03:11Speaker 6: write if you didn't have that medical knowledge.
- 1:03:13Speaker 7: I'm going to give props to First of all, we
- 1:03:16Speaker 7: have actors and actresses that can sell comedy, and they
- 1:03:19Speaker 7: were great. But the real JD is, as I can
- 1:03:25Speaker 7: tell by your persona, he is a guy that I
- 1:03:27Speaker 7: would not have been surprised if he went into comedy writing.
- 1:03:30Speaker 7: He was funny, and so for me it was it'd
- 1:03:35Speaker 7: be interesting to even go back to all his memories.
- 1:03:37Speaker 7: But I remember him talking about pimping, you know, when
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: you get grilled with questions and rounds, and he would
- 1:03:44Speaker 7: be like, I was never ready. I always felt, you know,
- 1:03:47Speaker 7: like I was a deer in the headlights. And then
- 1:03:49Speaker 7: just from him saying that, you know, I was like, oh,
- 1:03:52Speaker 7: JD's gonna be a deer in the headlights when I
- 1:03:54Speaker 7: asked him a question, you know what I mean? And
- 1:03:57Speaker 7: I would bet stuff that you when you go through
- 1:04:01Speaker 7: all this stuff, we'll meet it with humor and banter,
- 1:04:04Speaker 7: because if you don't, I think you go crazy. So
- 1:04:06Speaker 7: I give him the props for it, and the performers
- 1:04:09Speaker 7: the props for it, because they'd find ways to make
- 1:04:12Speaker 7: it funny.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: You know, Bill did to JD. Ever like overstep the
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: line and he's like, hey, Bill, I got an episode
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: for you. Here's what's going to happen.
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: Yeah. They did two things.
- 1:04:19Speaker 7: One, he and Dolly once said hey, we got bored
- 1:04:23Speaker 7: because we were both sick and stayed in all weekend.
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: We wrote an episode and.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: I was like, oh my god.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: I was like yeah, and of course I'll look at it.
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: And then they're like, no, we're not going to show
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: it to you. We forget it. We don't want to
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: do that right, which was super.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: Cool, probably brilliant, and in the movie version would be
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: like the most brilliant script ever written, I know.
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: And then the other thing was to answer Steph's question.
- 1:04:44Speaker 7: We would sometimes work backwards, you know, which was really
- 1:04:47Speaker 7: hard because for.
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: Him, because I'd go, I want to do this funny moment.
- 1:04:51Speaker 7: We need you to say something that would cause this
- 1:04:54Speaker 7: guy to not have a sense of smell and not
- 1:04:57Speaker 7: blah blah blah, and it can't be soious enough that
- 1:05:00Speaker 7: I have to worry about whether or not he die.
- 1:05:02Speaker 7: And he should still be conscious and be able to
- 1:05:05Speaker 7: talk because he has to talk in the scene. And
- 1:05:07Speaker 7: Jad would be like, dude, this is worse than med school.
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: Homework. This is impossible had one of my.
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: Favorites one speaking of speaking of funny medical dragon, Uh,
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: it's pronounced annal Jesus.
- 1:05:19Speaker 8: I can't believe you said that. Literally, I had to
- 1:05:22Speaker 8: give a talk to my like med school.
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: It was one of our small groups, and they were
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: talking about how it's so important to be able to
- 1:05:29Speaker 6: articulate in kind of Layman's terms, what you're talking about.
- 1:05:33Speaker 6: And I was like, yeah, there's a scene of Scrubs
- 1:05:36Speaker 6: where Turk has to explain that annal Jesick is like
- 1:05:39Speaker 6: not the same as anal Jesus.
- 1:05:42Speaker 8: Put it in your bite and that. Everyone was like,
- 1:05:44Speaker 8: I mean, yeah, I guess that works.
- 1:05:48Speaker 6: That was.
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: On my top ten jokes that I did not write
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: that I wish I could take credit for. That's such
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: a funny joke.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: Man, Saniel Goldman, whatever you do, I'm not gonna.
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: It really bums me out.
- 1:05:58Speaker 7: I think that might have even been Arsist or Gabby
- 1:06:00Speaker 7: I don't even know, or Hobert. That sounds like a
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: Tim Hobert choke too.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: All right, Steph, you got another question.
- 1:06:05Speaker 6: Yeah, it's kind of piggybacks off of the first one
- 1:06:10Speaker 6: a little bit. So you guys talked about early on
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: in your episodes that you kind of work to develop
- 1:06:17Speaker 6: this character and figure out what kind of mannerisms you
- 1:06:19Speaker 6: wanted and all that kind of stuff. It really shows
- 1:06:22Speaker 6: throughout the progression of this season they kind of grow
- 1:06:25Speaker 6: into those character traits while also still growing as people.
- 1:06:28Speaker 6: But I find that they're really kind of congruent with
- 1:06:31Speaker 6: how you would expect that person to act as a clinician.
- 1:06:35Speaker 6: And I was wondering if the kind of character that
- 1:06:37Speaker 6: you developed influenced the way that the writers wrote scenes
- 1:06:41Speaker 6: of how you practiced medicine, Like.
- 1:06:44Speaker 7: Later on, I'll set Donald and Zach up to talk
- 1:06:48Speaker 7: about this, but I'll tell you my philosophy of running
- 1:06:50Speaker 7: a TV show is ook. They were talking about show
- 1:06:53Speaker 7: running earlier. So your question's awesome because it means a
- 1:06:57Speaker 7: lot to me that it felt that way to you.
- 1:06:58Speaker 7: Because when I teach sometimes like the I teach the
- 1:07:02Speaker 7: Writers Guild for kids running shows for the first time
- 1:07:04Speaker 7: and stuff I said. The most successful shows, in my mind,
- 1:07:07Speaker 7: when you write the pilot and come up with it
- 1:07:09Speaker 7: and actors and actresses don't exist there.
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: The characters belong to you.
- 1:07:13Speaker 7: You invented them, and then you cast these people and
- 1:07:17Speaker 7: when you do the pilot the first episode, for it
- 1:07:19Speaker 7: to be great, it's got to be a partnership.
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: You know, it's half mine and half yours.
- 1:07:24Speaker 7: But then for a show to work, ownership you have
- 1:07:26Speaker 7: to stop being a control freak, and ownership has to
- 1:07:29Speaker 7: go to the actors and actresses playing the parts. And
- 1:07:34Speaker 7: so I would ask Donald and Zach, you know at
- 1:07:36Speaker 7: this point in the show where they said it, you know,
- 1:07:38Speaker 7: because what would happen is it's really cool.
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: Eventually, on good shows, people start coming up to you
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: and going, I don't think my character would say it
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: this way? Or are you sure this is how my
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: character would react.
- 1:07:50Speaker 7: In this moment, or should my character be more like this?
- 1:07:52Speaker 7: And you on shows that are working, you have to listen,
- 1:07:55Speaker 7: and I did you guys eventually kind of feel like
- 1:07:58Speaker 7: those characters were yours?
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: You know, I definitely felt.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: I definitely felt like Turk became if not I became Turk,
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: or Turk became me. I definitely at some point everything
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: it just seemed like I was living life on camera
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: at some point. And what really helped me though, was
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: you realizing medical jargon wasn't my strength, you know what
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: I mean? And once you realized that, right, And once
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: you realized that and made Turk just a scalpel jockey,
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: it freed me, you know what I mean. And I
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: didn't have to worry about having to say certain things,
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: you know what I mean, drink up. I didn't have
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: to worry about saying certain things, whereas Zach and Sarah
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: would say and Johnny would say things, and I'd be like,
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: I'm so happy I don't have to do that.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: I remember being in the makeup chair in the morning
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: and being like looking through the sides and being like, oh, no,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: Donald's got a medical jargon monologue. Those are just lunch
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: is going to be late today.
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: Yeah, those would be the worst. Those would be the
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: worst days. But once Bill was like, I'm not going
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: to give you medical jargon anymore. Churk knows it, he
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: just doesn't like to use it, right, life became so
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: much easier.
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: It's a good question, though, because do you guys eventually
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: even would start riffing your own lies, and I gladly
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: would use them because they knew their characters and how
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: they would react and what they would say and didn't
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: bother me at all. It made me happy. And you're
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: you know, even getting to talk to the same way
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: you're getting to talk to you makes me happy.
- 1:09:28Speaker 7: One of the things I momentos I have on my
- 1:09:30Speaker 7: wall in my office from Scrubs is from a med student, Steph,
- 1:09:34Speaker 7: who pulled an answer it rounds out of their ass
- 1:09:37Speaker 7: because they remembered a chunk of dialogue on our show.
- 1:09:41Speaker 7: And they said the attending was so blown away because
- 1:09:43Speaker 7: there was a question they shouldn't have known the answer to.
- 1:09:45Speaker 4: Do you know what I mean?
- 1:09:46Speaker 6: And I said same things about her med students that
- 1:09:49Speaker 6: like all of the fact like trivia that people don't
- 1:09:52Speaker 6: really they're not supposed to remember, you know, beers into
- 1:09:55Speaker 6: practice because it just is you never see it.
- 1:09:58Speaker 8: She was like, yeah, all the med students know it. Scrubs.
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: What kind of what kind of doctor do you want
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: to be stuff?
- 1:10:07Speaker 8: I'm leaning towards surgery, but we'll see opened anything.
- 1:10:11Speaker 7: I think it's really really neat. You know that you're
- 1:10:13Speaker 7: doing that, and uh, it's a gig that's of service.
- 1:10:15Speaker 7: It's like being a teacher. It's awesome and the most
- 1:10:18Speaker 7: important jobs to be of service. I think like teacher, soldier,
- 1:10:23Speaker 7: a physician, and of course comedy writer.
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: I would think right not at all.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: All right, Steph, thank you so much. That was something
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: amazing questions and also really inspired us. I mean you
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: made us all feel like we we may have inspired
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: we you know, we inspired at least one person in
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: medicine a lot, a lot.
- 1:10:42Speaker 6: Let me.
- 1:10:42Speaker 8: Yeah, you guys have a huge medical fan base.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: Well, good luck with that.
- 1:10:46Speaker 7: Promise me that you'll dress up and you'll dress up
- 1:10:48Speaker 7: as Elliott for at least one Halloween.
- 1:10:50Speaker 8: Oh yeah, every Halloween.
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: Whoever, if you have friends that go as Turk for Halloween,
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: tell them please no black face.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: Make sure they're really black because Donald I cringe.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: No, they don't even have to be black if you
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: just don't paint your.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: Face right, Okay, but Donald and I cringe every Halloween
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: when people tag us on Instagram like excitedly like Turk
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: and JD for Halloween. And still in twenty twenty, there's
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: still people painting their faces brown and black and it's horrible.
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: Although we did it a lot on Scrubs.
- 1:11:25Speaker 7: Yeah, by the way, one of the many things that
- 1:11:29Speaker 7: doesn't hold up in retrospect on the show, the a stuff.
- 1:11:35Speaker 4: Good luck with all this stuff.
- 1:11:36Speaker 8: And hi, Vic and Hayden, hope you guys are jealous.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: Turn it off. Turn it off off, you, guys, turn
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: it off. Steph thought she was just gonna sneak into
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: Vic and Hayden a quick thing. But I think we
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: should just keep talking about Vic and Hayden. I like Vic,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: but I don't like Hayden.
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: I don't like it at all.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: I want their shout out to go awry.
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: Vick and Hayden shout out. Now, yeah, I want let's uh,
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: let's do a Vick and Hayden episode.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: Okay, we should so at four forty four, guys, what's
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: happening four? At four forty four, what's happening is cow?
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: We haven't talked about this episode at all.
- 1:12:19Speaker 8: I know.
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: Oh yeah, here's what I like. We've talked about the
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: Sarah story both with Steph and.
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: We jumped around.
- 1:12:26Speaker 7: We jumped around, and we talked about the Neil, but
- 1:12:28Speaker 7: we haven't talked about the Judy and Zach story.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: We're gonna get into it, and we're gonna get into it,
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: and you know, but listen, Donald Bill Llaurin's episodes are
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: always going to be long because he brings a lot
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: to the table and he's.
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: No, I'm not complaining I'm not complaining about the length
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: of the episode. I'm just saying some people, some people
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: want to listen to a rewatch podcast and actually rewatch
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: the show, well.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: Then they should listen to a different show. We happened
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: to we happened to Meander. At four forty four, what's
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Happening is mentioned for the first time.
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: Okay, you don't need to start banging.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: I did I bang the table? I banged the table
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: on that.
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: I'm sorry?
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: Why am I yelling?
- 1:13:03Speaker 4: What happens?
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: At four forty four, what's Happening is mentioned for the
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: very first time on Scrubs.
- 1:13:08Speaker 7: Oh yeah, you guys did the dance and we don't
- 1:13:11Speaker 7: even idea it really, She says, it's not that great
- 1:13:13Speaker 7: a show.
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: You just expected people to know what we were talking about.
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: And that's such an old reference.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: I know, And nowadays kids don't even know the glory
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: of what's happening unless you're our age.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: Hey, hey, the glory of what's happening or what's happening now?
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: I know?
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: Do you remember now what's happening? Now? Surely owned the restaurant.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: They all grew up and now d is not just
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: a small character. She's like the star.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: No, she was the star. I think because she was
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: the star, everybody came back. I didn't like what's happening
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: now as much as what's happening.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: What's happening is.
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: I just liked he runs dance, and I liked the
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: moment you guys did for me, which is forever. I liked, hey, hey, hey.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: What's happening?
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Hey hey hey.
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: Do you remember in the opening credits when they made
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: they left rerun and he's driving the street and then
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: reruns just running after the pickup truck.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: That's rude that they did that.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: I know they were making they were making fun of.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: The heavy said guy, making fun of the heavy set guy.
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: But watching me run chase after that truck was funny.
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: Come on, this sure was because he had suspenders on.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: Yeah, well that that and the hat and the and
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: the same red his outfit never changed.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: Do you remember the episode where Roger decided he was
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: going to be a nude model.
- 1:14:40Speaker 7: My favorite thing that's happening right now is you guys said,
- 1:14:43Speaker 7: we haven't talked about the show yet, and then you're going,
- 1:14:46Speaker 7: do you remember the episode.
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: Of What's Happening?
- 1:14:49Speaker 7: By the way, And if I was like if I
- 1:14:50Speaker 7: was like at ten fifteen and that What's Happening episode.
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: That's the first time that surely says.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: I just remember. I'm just well, you can go back
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: to the show, but I just remember that there was
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: an episode where Roger was doing nude modeling for artists,
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: you know, when they like paint the nude model. And
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: I remember thinking as a child, like this is scandalous.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: Roger's gonna take off his clothes, like that's crazy.
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: Okay, let's get back into the show. Okay, So let's
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: talk about the JD and Carla storyline, which is a
- 1:15:21Speaker 3: very interesting storyline because at the beginning of the show,
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: you guys are really clicking and grooving. One reason because
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: your best friend and his now girlfriend are always you know,
- 1:15:33Speaker 3: we live together, or your roommate and his girlfriend always around,
- 1:15:38Speaker 3: and so you guys have developed a relationship and because.
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: Of that, you're a dynamic duo of your own. You
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: know what I mean. She doesn't work, drink up, she
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: doesn't work for you.
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: But you guys are a team that is very very
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: very cohesive, and you go along and you fuck it
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: up by becoming judgmental.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: Right, Well, I'm feeling every one is being condescending to
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: me and I and I'm starting to become a good doctor.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: I'm starting to get my groove. I'm starting to know
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: what's happening and h and also okay, go on and
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: and and I just you know, like like someone does
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: you lose he loses his temper, and of course he
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: loses his temper at the worst person possible, his teammate. Uh, Carlo.
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: Yeah, this was also a product the reason I wrote
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: this is is interesting, the product of two things. One,
- 1:16:31Speaker 4: all the nurses that were nice enough to give us interviews.
- 1:16:34Speaker 6: You know.
- 1:16:35Speaker 7: One of the stories that you saw was the nurses
- 1:16:37Speaker 7: are essentially the last line of training, you know, for
- 1:16:40Speaker 7: a lot of these medical students and residents and interns
- 1:16:43Speaker 7: and stuff, because when you first show up, you know
- 1:16:45Speaker 7: more than they do even say it in the show,
- 1:16:46Speaker 7: than the training kicks in and the dynamics ships, and you.
- 1:16:51Speaker 4: Know, so many of them ultimately.
- 1:16:55Speaker 7: Told us that it's so interesting how to navigate that,
- 1:16:58Speaker 7: because you know, there is an air of superiority to
- 1:17:02Speaker 7: some doctors, you know, when they get to that point,
- 1:17:05Speaker 7: and it messes up that dynamic, you know, And I
- 1:17:09Speaker 7: wanted to combine that in my personal life, my mom's family.
- 1:17:12Speaker 7: My mom and then me were the first two in
- 1:17:15Speaker 7: her side of family to go to college, you know,
- 1:17:17Speaker 7: and then you always kind of enter these dynamics of like, oh,
- 1:17:22Speaker 7: you know, you think you're smarter than me because you
- 1:17:25Speaker 7: actually went on to secondary education and did that stuff.
- 1:17:28Speaker 7: And you know, as you get older, you realize that
- 1:17:31Speaker 7: doesn't have anything to do with anything. You know, At
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: this point in my life, I know tons of geniuses
- 1:17:37Speaker 7: that didn't finish high school and tons of you know,
- 1:17:40Speaker 7: grad school graduates.
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: They are the dumbest people alive, do you know what
- 1:17:44Speaker 4: I mean? But around youthful things that kind of carries there.
- 1:17:49Speaker 7: And my favorite part of that stuff was her challenging
- 1:17:54Speaker 7: you to admit it and you actually admitting it, you
- 1:17:56Speaker 7: know what I mean.
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: And that was what enabled you guys still to be friends.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: In that scene was really I mean, Judy's I'm just
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: you know, the straight man in that scene. Her her
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: performance in that rain outside the bus I thought was
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: just incredible. She did such a beautiful job and it
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: was heartbreaking. Still to this day, I'm watching it and
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: was so moved by by by by how heartfelt and
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: open she was.
- 1:18:17Speaker 7: Uh, And I wrote down because this is what we
- 1:18:20Speaker 7: wanted to do that people didn't understand it comedy of
- 1:18:23Speaker 7: comedy at the time, and why Judy Rays was so perfect,
- 1:18:27Speaker 7: you know, because there weren't a lot of dramedies on.
- 1:18:29Speaker 7: And one of my favorite jokes in this episode was
- 1:18:34Speaker 7: when before you get off the bus, she's leaving and
- 1:18:36Speaker 7: she's like, I'm so mad at you and you said you.
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: Can't you forgave me.
- 1:18:41Speaker 7: You can't just change your mind, And without selling it
- 1:18:43Speaker 7: as a joke, she's like, have you never met a
- 1:18:45Speaker 7: woman before?
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: And she walks out into the rain, you know what
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: I mean.
- 1:18:48Speaker 7: And it wasn't read like a punchline. It was read like, yeah,
- 1:18:52Speaker 7: you can still be funny in drama and amongst pathos
- 1:18:56Speaker 7: when you're feeling bad. And that was like the tonal stuff.
- 1:18:59Speaker 7: That's why she's so good man, because she's always so real,
- 1:19:03Speaker 7: very very very good actors.
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I look back at it like I had no
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: clue how much of a power how she was or
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: or is I should say, And when I watched these episodes,
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: you know, I said it in our first podcast, her
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: and Ken, Wow, really they're really MVPs of our show,
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: you know what I mean?
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: Drink up.
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: They can just don't get actor.
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: You don't have to tell people to drink when you say,
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: you know what I'm just I know they're just gonna
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: do it.
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: What I'm bringing, I'm bringing it to my attention that
- 1:19:36Speaker 3: I said it.
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: This is the most you've ever done, by the way
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: you went from the previous episode being conscious of it
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: and doing none to this one doing like thirty I
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: you know what I mean.
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: I probably said it several times in the last episode. Also,
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: this episode is also about how how important your name is,
- 1:19:54Speaker 3: regardless of if it's Bambi or JD or your reputation
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: or Scooter, whatever it is you have. Reputation is very
- 1:20:02Speaker 3: important and you only get one chance to make a
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: first impression, and after that people will have judgments of
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: who they think you are.
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: And this episode really touches on that.
- 1:20:15Speaker 7: Here's the thing I screwed up in this episode off
- 1:20:17Speaker 7: what Donald and Sam bothers me. What doctor Cox's character
- 1:20:21Speaker 7: does to JD, you know, of shaming him was so
- 1:20:26Speaker 7: bad that it bummed me out that he never got
- 1:20:29Speaker 7: his comeuppance for that, you know what I mean, because
- 1:20:31Speaker 7: you didn't tell her to go protect you. And then
- 1:20:32Speaker 7: he makes everybody stop and goes, we're all to be
- 1:20:35Speaker 7: super special to this little flower, you know.
- 1:20:37Speaker 4: And I thought that was so egregiously mean, you know
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: what I mean. But his character, I guess was flawed.
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: But we should have gotten him, have him make amends
- 1:20:47Speaker 4: for that or get thumped for that.
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: But Boxing Fantasy was pretty funny. Though Johnny oiled.
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: I'm not to say, holy cowl did he have on?
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: There was a lot of oil. I remember, there was
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: a lot of crystal.
- 1:21:00Speaker 7: I watched it with Christa, who had to do all
- 1:21:02Speaker 7: her romance scenes with Johnny c and uh and she
- 1:21:05Speaker 7: will eventually, you know, be on.
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: Your You're so nice about her too.
- 1:21:11Speaker 7: He came he came on as a punching bag, and
- 1:21:14Speaker 7: she was half asleep through upstairs in the room and
- 1:21:17Speaker 7: she goes, uh, half drowsy.
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: Here comes old up.
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: That he is just just glistening with Johnny has a
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: full bottle of criscal oil.
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: Let's be honest. Though he's ripped, he looks amazing.
- 1:21:34Speaker 4: I think it's drawn on.
- 1:21:35Speaker 7: Oh you know what I wanted to say, and I
- 1:21:36Speaker 7: wanted to tell me if you guys thought this in
- 1:21:38Speaker 7: real life.
- 1:21:39Speaker 4: When I say that is what I wrote.
- 1:21:41Speaker 7: The last thing I wrote down about Judy, would I say, like,
- 1:21:44Speaker 7: when you get really lucky, it's not the.
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: Writing or anything else, it's all.
- 1:21:46Speaker 7: It's everything, and the casting people have to really nail,
- 1:21:50Speaker 7: you know, these characters and be who they are. And
- 1:21:52Speaker 7: the amazing thing watching Judy back then, you guys, Zach
- 1:21:56Speaker 7: and Donald were such kids, and Sarah Sarah's character, and
- 1:22:01Speaker 7: Sarah felt like a kid and Judy.
- 1:22:04Speaker 4: And this is one of the reasons I think the
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: show works.
- 1:22:06Speaker 7: She was not significantly, She's essentially the same age as
- 1:22:10Speaker 7: all you guys, but she seems like such a grown
- 1:22:13Speaker 7: up even.
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: From the start, definitely way more mature than we were, you.
- 1:22:17Speaker 4: Know, and seemed like such an adult that it made
- 1:22:19Speaker 4: the show work.
- 1:22:20Speaker 7: Of like, oh, one of these four is you know,
- 1:22:23Speaker 7: old for her years and an adult already, whereas Judy is,
- 1:22:27Speaker 7: you know, she could have easily on a different show
- 1:22:29Speaker 7: been Elliott or been you know, the little kid, you know, And.
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: So it was was she like that in real life
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: or she good matter?
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: In real life? Judy was way more mature than the
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: three of us I think we were. We were just
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: as silly and goofy as our characters and you know,
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: Judy was funny and would play along with us, but
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: I think she was definitely more mature than us.
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: By the way, there's a really funny there's a really
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: funny fuck up bill at twelve oh three. When Donald
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: runs into the room that Kelso's lured him to, you
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: can totally see a hand that's all come in and
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: it's on the floor and it's holding the door open.
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: And it made me think, now we shit like that out.
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: I know, I know nowadays we just you know, painted out,
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: but it made me think it was probably Patrick Bolton
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: or something lying on.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: The floe or Patrick shout out Patrick Bolton.
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: Patrick Bolton was the on set track.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: It has wheels, that thing will be on set.
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: I enjoyed after hearing the interesting thing you guys, Bost
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: said about eating.
- 1:23:24Speaker 7: I think I've never seen the two of you do
- 1:23:26Speaker 7: more eating in an episode. Zach having a jam a
- 1:23:29Speaker 7: cupcake in your mouth, Donald just wolf and sandwich. Did
- 1:23:32Speaker 7: you guys really eat that stuff or were you just
- 1:23:33Speaker 7: spitting it out as soon as they said cut I.
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: Do love a sandwich. I'm not gonna lie.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: A cupcake doesn't count. But if someone says we need
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: you to jam this cupcake in your mouth. You're gonna
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: do it. I mean, that's your excuse. But also is
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: that it was that cheap cupcake. What are those called
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: hostess cupcakes? That was a dang.
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: Listen, I'll tell you something right now. You put some
- 1:23:55Speaker 3: cold cuts, some cheese in between, some herod. That sounds
- 1:23:59Speaker 3: delicious to you. Could put some lettuce tomato on it.
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: I'll eat that shit.
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: And another another strike at the janitor not speaking to
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: anyone in season one, Bill, is that he clearly has
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: told doctor Cox to call me Scooter at the end.
- 1:24:12Speaker 4: I don't know what you're talking about. He never ever
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: spoke to anybody except JD.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: AND's not and I have been going through like detectives
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: going so we're trying to keep the janitor Laura alive
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: for season one. But the facts, the facts are problematic.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: The facts are problematic.
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: Bill doesn't We've done all.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: The work, just like Turkleton, there was just okay. So
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: in your mind, Bill, hit your rationalization button. How does
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: Cox know to call me Scooter?
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: It's just a random coincidence. The nickname.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: I love it. I really want this to be a
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: running gag that Donald and I do the detective work
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: to see how the janitor talks to other people.
- 1:24:55Speaker 7: The only one I think you've ever seen him speak
- 1:24:57Speaker 7: to is Elliott and that thing when they're all walking
- 1:24:59Speaker 7: up to each other.
- 1:25:00Speaker 3: Mad, Yes, yes, well she speaks to him. He doesn't
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: necessarily speak to her.
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: The exactly that might not have even been a janitor.
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: She made Mad. This is just a J's lens.
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: The last thing I wanted to last thing I rever
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: you know what, And you're absolutely right.
- 1:25:15Speaker 3: Actually, the very next person at the janitor, the very
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: next person that's attacked after Elliott, uh does that to
- 1:25:22Speaker 3: the janitor is JD.
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: So it could be it.
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: Could be that that one's that one's imaginary and Elliott
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: was talking to an intern or an order or something or.
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: No, that's a possibility, or she's just not even talking
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: to anyone. There's no one there and she's just saying it.
- 1:25:38Speaker 4: Yeah, it's very fight clubby when.
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: The last thing I want to say is this, they
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: went overboard with the filters on Sarah in the bathtub
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: because it's like Barbara Walters, you can barely see her
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: through filters, and and she's in like this most enormous
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: fucking bathroom and I was thinking, like, why does Elliott,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: But then I remember it is doesn't Elliot suposed to
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: have money from her parents.
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: Her parents are paid Elliott's in like.
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: The bathroom of a millionaire's house.
- 1:26:03Speaker 7: It was subtext that we had planned for and a
- 1:26:06Speaker 7: lot of it got cut, but it eventually pays off.
- 1:26:09Speaker 7: When she tells her dad she doesn't want to go
- 1:26:11Speaker 7: into a female specialty and he stops paying.
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: For her life, so she has to move in with you.
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: She loses her whole apartment. She works at that apartment.
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: She's like, this place is big.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: She works at the clinic, she starts working at the clinic.
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: All of that stuff I remember, Well, thank you, sorry, audience,
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: we don't Yeah, audience, we went all over the place today,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: but we're so excited.
- 1:26:35Speaker 6: Show.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: We made about a bunch.
- 1:26:38Speaker 4: Of talks and nurses.
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: Said he's a stormy so YadA
- 1:26:49Speaker 4: Yeah m
