- 0:02As in the vigilance of the sleepless night, through the
- 0:06slow, heavy footed, silent hours, repressing in her bosom
- 0:10its load of grief, she sat staring at the dumb tread of
- 0:16time and the approach of ever nearing fate.
- 0:20A summons From her being Summit came a sound, a call that broke
- 0:26the seals of night above her brows.
- 0:29Where will and knowledge meet? A mighty voice invaded mortal
- 0:34space. It seemed to come from
- 0:36inaccessible heights, and yet was intimate with all the world
- 0:43and knew the meaning of the steps of time, and saw eternal
- 0:47destiny's changeless scene filling the far prospect of the
- 0:52cosmic gaze. As the voice touched, her body
- 0:57became a stark and rigid golden statue of motionless trance, a
- 1:02stone of God lit by an amethyst soul.
- 1:07Around her body's stillness all grew still.
- 1:11Her heart listened to its slow, measured beats.
- 1:15Her mind renouncing, thought, heard, and was mute.
- 1:21Why camest thou to this dumb death bound earth, this ignorant
- 1:25life beneath indifferent skies, tied like a sacrifice on the
- 1:29altar of time? O spirit, O immortal energy, if
- 1:35twas to nurse grief in a helpless heart, or with hard
- 1:39tearless eyes await thy doom, Arise, O soul, and Vanquish time
- 1:45and death. But Savitri's heart replied, in
- 1:50the dim night my strength is taken from me and given to
- 1:55death. Why should I lift my hands to
- 1:58the shut heavens, or struggle with mute inevitable fate, or
- 2:04hope in vain to uplift an ignorant race who hug their lot
- 2:08and mock the Saviour Light and see in mind Wisdom's soul
- 2:13Tabernacle in its harsh peak and its inconciant base, a rock of
- 2:19safety and an anchor of sleep. Is there a God whom any cry can
- 2:25move? He sits in peace and leaves the
- 2:28mortal strength impotent against his calm omnipotent will, law
- 2:35and in conscience in the almighty hands of death.
- 2:40What need have I? What need has Satyavan to avoid
- 2:45the black meshed net, the dismal door, or call a mightier light
- 2:50into life's closed room, a greater law into man's little
- 2:54world? Why should I strive with Earth's
- 2:58unyielding laws or stave off death's inevitable hour?
- 3:03This surely is best to pactice with my fate and follow close
- 3:09behind my lover's steps, and pass through night from twilight
- 3:14to the sun, across the tenebrous river that divides the adjoining
- 3:20parishes of earth and heaven. Then could we lie in armed
- 3:25breast upon breast, untroubled by thought, untroubled by our
- 3:30hearts, forgetting man and life and time and its hours,
- 3:35forgetting eternity's call, forgetting God, The voice
- 3:40replied. Is this enough, O Spirit?
- 3:46And what shall thy soul say when it wakes and knows the work was
- 3:50left undone for which it came? Or is this all for thy being
- 3:55born on earth, charged with a mandate from eternity, a
- 4:00listener to the voices of the years, a follower of the
- 4:03footprints of the gods, to pass and leave unchanged the old
- 4:08dusty laws? Shall there be no new tables, no
- 4:13new word, no greater light come down upon the earth, delivering
- 4:17her from her unconsciousness, man's spirit from unalterable
- 4:22fate? Canst, canst thou not down to
- 4:27open the doors of fate, the iron doors that seemed forever
- 4:31closed, and lead man to truths wide and golden Rd. that runs
- 4:36through finite things to eternity?
- 4:40Is this then the report that I must make?
- 4:43My head bowed with shame before the eternal seat?
- 4:47His power he kindled in thy body has failed.
- 4:50His labourer returns her task undone.
- 4:56Then Savitri's heart fell mute. It spoke no word, but holding
- 5:02back her troubled rebel heart, abrupt, erect and strong calm,
- 5:08like a hill surmounting the seas of mortal ignorance, its peak
- 5:14immutable of above mine's air. A power within her, answered the
- 5:19still voice. I am thy portion here, charged
- 5:24with thy work as thou myself seated forever above.
- 5:30Speak to my depths, O great and deathless voice command, for I
- 5:36am here to do thy will, the voice replied.
- 5:43Remember why thou camest. Find out thy soul.
- 5:48Recover thy hid self in silence. Seek God's meaning in thy
- 5:54depths. Then mortal nature change to the
- 5:58Divine. Open God's door, Enter into his
- 6:03trance. Cast thought from thee that
- 6:07nimble ape of light, in his tremendous hush, stilling thy
- 6:12brain, his vast truth. Wake within and know and see.
- 6:18Cast from thee sense that veils thy spirit's sight in the
- 6:24enormous emptiness of thy mind. Thou shalt see the Eternal's
- 6:28body in the world. Know him in every voice heard by
- 6:32thy soul in the world's context. Meet His single touch.
- 6:38All things shall fold thee into his embrace.
- 6:42Conquer thy heart's throbs. Let thy heart beat in God.
- 6:47Thy nature shall be the engine of His works.
- 6:50Thy voice shall house the mightiness of His word.
- 6:55Then shalt thou harbour my force and conquer death.
- 7:02Then Savitri by her doomed husband, SAT still, rigid in her
- 7:06golden motionless pose, a statue of the fire, of the inner sun in
- 7:13the black night. The wrath of storm swept by.
- 7:17The Thunder crashed above her. The rain hissed, its million
- 7:22footsteps pattered on the roof, impassive mid the movement and
- 7:27the cry witness of the thoughts of mind, the moods of life, she
- 7:33looked into herself and sought for her soul.
