- 0:32Speaker 1: Get to seven thousand subscribers. So if you don't mind
- 0:36Speaker 1: and you like the show, go ahead and hit that
- 0:39Speaker 1: subscribe button now. One of the big stories from Cardinal
- 0:43Speaker 1: World is that Yadier Molina is back with the Cardinals
- 0:48Speaker 1: in some official capacity. He has been hired as an
- 0:52Speaker 1: advisor to heinm. Bloom, expected to work with the young
- 0:56Speaker 1: Cardinal catchers in the minor leagues, and he'll make some appearance,
- 1:00Speaker 1: which is with the big club being the dugout a
- 1:01Speaker 1: little bit at some point. This season important for the
- 1:05Speaker 1: Cardinals because in their top six prospects, three of them
- 1:11Speaker 1: are catchers. They have a lot of wealth in terms
- 1:14Speaker 1: of young They got Renelle Rodriguez, they got Leonardo Bernall
- 1:18Speaker 1: and of course Jimmy Crooks So, Matt, I'm gonna start
- 1:21Speaker 1: with you. Yachti's back in the fall. He had been
- 1:24Speaker 1: an advisor UNDERMO, didn't really do that much publicly, but
- 1:28Speaker 1: now he's got hands on responsibilities to work with young
- 1:33Speaker 1: catching prospects.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Matt, your thoughts, Yeah, I mean, I think it's exciting. Obviously,
- 1:39Speaker 4: had Yati as part of the organization is important. I'm
- 1:43Speaker 4: just interested in how much, you know, how much he'll
- 1:48Speaker 4: be doing, you know, I think the more the better,
- 1:50Speaker 4: obviously with Yachti, but it felt like last year they've
- 1:54Speaker 4: made a big announcement that he was back in the
- 1:55Speaker 4: organization and then kind of just didn't know what he
- 1:59Speaker 4: was doing are up to. I think he showed up,
- 2:01Speaker 4: you know, in the dugout for a couple of days.
- 2:03Speaker 4: So I'm excited. I hope he's more involved. I hope
- 2:07Speaker 4: he's as active and as involved as possible and working
- 2:12Speaker 4: with the young catchers like he talked about. But more
- 2:14Speaker 4: importantly for me, I think having him around at the
- 2:17Speaker 4: big league level would be would be great with with
- 2:19Speaker 4: some of their catching and and some of the you know,
- 2:23Speaker 4: some of their young catchers in the big league. So obviously,
- 2:27Speaker 4: you know, great to have him in the organization can't
- 2:30Speaker 4: see him anywhere else. If he wants to be part
- 2:33Speaker 4: of an organization, I just hope they use him and
- 2:36Speaker 4: and and take advantage of having a brilliant baseball mind
- 2:40Speaker 4: uh as part of the organization. And and again, sometimes
- 2:44Speaker 4: you don't know how much time yachti Iss is willing to.
- 2:47Speaker 4: You know, I think John Well is maybe a senior
- 2:49Speaker 4: in high school, so he's gonna want to be watching
- 2:53Speaker 4: yon Well and and and maybe he might be a
- 2:56Speaker 4: freshman heading to his freshman year in college. But anyways,
- 2:59Speaker 4: you know, I think he's play baseball in college. So
- 3:01Speaker 4: sometimes in these situations, Yadi will kind of dictate how
- 3:05Speaker 4: much he's involved. But if I was the Cardinals, I'll
- 3:07Speaker 4: try to get him in there as much as possible.
- 3:10Speaker 2: So Lances.
- 3:12Speaker 1: As Matt points out, Yatti has been in this position
- 3:14Speaker 1: before and again didn't do a ton that we knew
- 3:17Speaker 1: about publicly. But I think for Yadi, it's a different time.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Certainly it's time Bloom, it's a different president of baseball ops.
- 3:26Speaker 1: But I think Yadi, who's already said he wants to
- 3:29Speaker 1: manage in the big leagues, he's going to be managing
- 3:31Speaker 1: Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball class. He has
- 3:35Speaker 1: his eyes set on taking that next step in terms
- 3:38Speaker 1: of managing a team. And you would think, especially with
- 3:43Speaker 1: these prospects that the Cardinals have and the young guys
- 3:46Speaker 1: I have at the major league roster, this is really
- 3:48Speaker 1: an opportunity for Yadi to get to where he wants
- 3:51Speaker 1: to go. It's a different time for him.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's part of the process that he's
- 3:56Speaker 3: going to have to take to.
- 3:57Speaker 5: Become a big league manager.
- 3:59Speaker 3: You see, I just go into front offices as special
- 4:02Speaker 3: assistant roles and things like that, kind of learn that
- 4:06Speaker 3: part of the game so they can take it to.
- 4:09Speaker 5: The dugout when when it comes their time.
- 4:12Speaker 3: If Yady wants to be a manager, I think this
- 4:14Speaker 3: is going to give him kind of the baseball knowledge
- 4:17Speaker 3: of non or off the field. I guess behind the
- 4:21Speaker 3: scenes what you know front offices do. If he's helping
- 4:24Speaker 3: out in that situation, like I said, Like Matt said, though,
- 4:27Speaker 3: it's like Yadi's going to kind of dictate what what
- 4:30Speaker 3: he wants to do in the timeframe. I think the
- 4:32Speaker 3: further you get out of it from playing, the more
- 4:35Speaker 3: you are able to understand what time you're able to
- 4:37Speaker 3: give to it and stuff like that. So I think
- 4:39Speaker 3: this is his time to really understand, hey, I'm able
- 4:42Speaker 3: to give this amount of time for this and that,
- 4:45Speaker 3: and here's the direction I want to be able to
- 4:47Speaker 3: help in and how it's going to move forward, maybe
- 4:50Speaker 3: in this managerial quest to be a manager. So I
- 4:53Speaker 3: think it's great for him, great for the organization. I
- 4:56Speaker 3: think it's a good step for the organization getting quote
- 4:58Speaker 3: unquote baseball people back in and helping players, especially younger
- 5:03Speaker 3: players develop. There's been a lot of things that have
- 5:06Speaker 3: been taken away from him of getting guys that played
- 5:08Speaker 3: the game to help you know, uh, you know, usher
- 5:12Speaker 3: them into the big leagues and how to how to
- 5:14Speaker 3: do things, how to take some of these numbers and
- 5:17Speaker 3: computer things that they're given and actually make them winning
- 5:20Speaker 3: players on the field. So hopefully there's more to come
- 5:23Speaker 3: for the Cardinals to be able to, you know, add
- 5:26Speaker 3: a veteran or you know, older players that are retired
- 5:29Speaker 3: that have played the game at a high level, that
- 5:32Speaker 3: know how to use these things to help players better.
- 5:34Speaker 3: And yachtis a great one, especially for I haven't right away.
- 5:38Speaker 3: The first person I look at is is Herrera. I
- 5:40Speaker 3: think that's gonna be a great tool for him to have.
- 5:43Speaker 3: And if Ivan's got the ability to be a you know,
- 5:45Speaker 3: all star catcher, he's got the best guy to help
- 5:48Speaker 3: him get there.
- 5:50Speaker 1: And people ask me, well, what's going to be different
- 5:52Speaker 1: for YadA this time?
- 5:53Speaker 5: Again?
- 5:53Speaker 1: To me, different time for Yati. He has his eyes
- 5:56Speaker 1: on on being a manager. But Kyle, the other thing
- 6:00Speaker 1: is he was back with the team a little bit
- 6:02Speaker 1: last year in his post cardinal playing career with YadA.
- 6:06Speaker 1: He wasn't when he was back, he was in and out.
- 6:08Speaker 1: This time last season, he was mingling, he was talking
- 6:12Speaker 1: to the young players. He talked about wanting to be
- 6:14Speaker 1: more involved from a pitching standpoint. He was a former pitcher.
- 6:19Speaker 1: To have catchers behind the plate who were taught by
- 6:24Speaker 1: one of the great the game's all time greats. What
- 6:26Speaker 1: do you think that means for pictures no one, that
- 6:29Speaker 1: that catcher was taught by Yadi or Molina.
- 6:34Speaker 6: I think it means a lot, you know, being in
- 6:36Speaker 6: the organization just for a year, I still, you know, weird.
- 6:39Speaker 6: I was a couple of years after Yadi, and you
- 6:41Speaker 6: still kind of felt the weight that Yadi carry and
- 6:44Speaker 6: you still kind of felt the impact that he had
- 6:47Speaker 6: on the catchers on the pitchers and on that system.
- 6:49Speaker 6: So I mean, I think it, Yeah, it's gonna be
- 6:54Speaker 6: big for those catchers and big for the pitchers. Anytime
- 6:57Speaker 6: that you can have somebody who can help you take
- 6:59Speaker 6: analytics and make it usable and you know, put it.
- 7:02Speaker 7: In terms you understand.
- 7:04Speaker 6: Maybe if they just say it in a little different
- 7:06Speaker 6: way than the coaching staff currently, it can be you know,
- 7:08Speaker 6: a really big deal. One thing, a couple of things
- 7:11Speaker 6: that stand on. One thing that Lance said was just
- 7:14Speaker 6: the timing of it right, you know, and kind of
- 7:16Speaker 6: goes back to what Matt said about he's been on
- 7:19Speaker 6: there for a couple of years now, but maybe the
- 7:21Speaker 6: timing for Yadi just works out where he's ready to
- 7:23Speaker 6: be more involved. And I think, you know, one thing
- 7:26Speaker 6: Matt said was you bring him on a couple of
- 7:28Speaker 6: years ago because.
- 7:28Speaker 7: You want him to be in the organization and stay
- 7:30Speaker 7: in the organization.
- 7:32Speaker 6: If you let him go be a special assistant somewhere else,
- 7:35Speaker 6: you may not get him back. So I understand fans
- 7:37Speaker 6: are probably really excited that they named him a special assistant.
- 7:40Speaker 6: I think that was Lance's dream, you know, two years ago,
- 7:42Speaker 6: right out of the shoot anyways, to be named a
- 7:45Speaker 6: special assistant October tenth and twenty twenty four, but it
- 7:47Speaker 6: just didn't happen yet. But I mean, I think now
- 7:51Speaker 6: you see this year, I think you'll see Yadi a
- 7:54Speaker 6: lot more.
- 7:54Speaker 7: I think he has a great relationship from the sounds.
- 7:56Speaker 6: Of it, with Ali, And when a guy like Yadi
- 7:59Speaker 6: comes in, the egos kind of have to go out
- 8:01Speaker 6: the door a little bit. And you got to understand
- 8:03Speaker 6: that YACHTI is going to have some latitude here to
- 8:05Speaker 6: go and talk to guys and have conversations that maybe
- 8:08Speaker 6: you're not always privy to, maybe you didn't always okay
- 8:11Speaker 6: ahead of time, But Yadi's gonna carry some weight in
- 8:14Speaker 6: that room. And I think it's a good thing for
- 8:16Speaker 6: the culture and a good thing for the team.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I'd say all three of you guys are known for
- 8:20Speaker 1: that competitive fire, but Matt, you were teammates with with YACHTI,
- 8:25Speaker 1: tell me about that fire and what you saw with
- 8:28Speaker 1: him as a player that hopefully he can ignite that
- 8:31Speaker 1: spark with young guys and put them on the right track.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 4: I mean, I think for me, the thing that the
- 8:39Speaker 4: work ethic, the preparation, the the idea that he the
- 8:45Speaker 4: comfort level that he gave pictures that whatever he was
- 8:48Speaker 4: putting down I guess now would be whatever he is
- 8:51Speaker 4: typing into his Nigu shint guard.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Was well thought out.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Was you know that he had put the time and
- 8:58Speaker 4: effort in and the picture could simply just acute pitches
- 9:01Speaker 4: and didn't have to worry about if he was throwing
- 9:03Speaker 4: the right pitch or maybe you know, what was going
- 9:08Speaker 4: on with the hitters.
- 9:08Speaker 2: So I think he.
- 9:13Speaker 4: I mean, there's a lot of great things to say
- 9:14Speaker 4: about YACHTI obviously, like I said, his work ethic is
- 9:17Speaker 4: his preparation, his his intensity, his love for the game,
- 9:21Speaker 4: constantly learning, constantly watching video looking for little things. So
- 9:28Speaker 4: I think having him around and and and like and
- 9:32Speaker 4: like kylin Land said, having him around Herrera and some
- 9:34Speaker 4: of these these catchers, if you if you can develop catchers,
- 9:40Speaker 4: they carry tremendous value in the trade market. So if
- 9:43Speaker 4: if some of these young guys are or he can
- 9:45Speaker 4: help develop these guys into into like you know, potential
- 9:49Speaker 4: all stars, you can trade these these some of these
- 9:51Speaker 4: young catchers maybe.
- 9:53Speaker 2: For bigger holes that you have other places.
- 9:56Speaker 4: So the idea that he could come in and and
- 9:58Speaker 4: sort of be a catching whisper and and maybe, like
- 10:02Speaker 4: I said, turn some of these young catchers into valuable
- 10:05Speaker 4: pieces that you can use to help build this this
- 10:08Speaker 4: roster back to a world series roster is something that
- 10:11Speaker 4: I'm intrigued about now.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Adam Wainwright once told me, Lance, when you're the picture
- 10:17Speaker 1: and you're on the mound, it's your game. So if
- 10:22Speaker 1: you got to shake off Yata, you shake off YACHTI
- 10:24Speaker 1: But the question is, what's that like for a picture?
- 10:27Speaker 1: When Yady wants you to throw a certain pitch and
- 10:29Speaker 1: you want to throw another, how does that shake out?
- 10:34Speaker 5: Just depends on who you are with him to be
- 10:37Speaker 5: honest with yet not.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Seeing him get it, get in get into some people's
- 10:41Speaker 3: ass that didn't really know what they were shaken to.
- 10:44Speaker 3: If they didn't have a rhyme or reason for it,
- 10:47Speaker 3: he would he would get upset.
- 10:48Speaker 5: But if you had a rhyme or reason for it.
- 10:50Speaker 5: He was great to work with.
- 10:51Speaker 3: So and you you know, you do a lot of
- 10:53Speaker 3: the research and stuff that you need to do to
- 10:56Speaker 3: get ready for hitters, and you run that stuff by him,
- 10:59Speaker 3: and you guys talk and stuff like that. He was
- 11:01Speaker 3: He was great to work with. He understood guys, and
- 11:04Speaker 3: then guys that uh come in and uh shake just
- 11:07Speaker 3: because they they didn't know what they wanted to do.
- 11:11Speaker 5: Uh. He would tell them, hey, what do we what
- 11:13Speaker 5: do we got going on here? And why?
- 11:14Speaker 3: And if you didn't give him the answer he was
- 11:16Speaker 3: looking for or or give him an answer that made
- 11:19Speaker 3: sense because you're hey, I was just feeling this one,
- 11:23Speaker 3: he would tell you, Hey, I've been back there the
- 11:25Speaker 3: whole game, so let's uh, let's let's stay let's stay
- 11:28Speaker 3: in tune with what I'm doing, especially when relievers come in.
- 11:31Speaker 3: So but like you said, man, he's great. Uh, he's
- 11:34Speaker 3: gonna be great for these young starters too. People don't
- 11:36Speaker 3: realize what catchers see. And when you're on the mount
- 11:40Speaker 3: and they teach you the stuff they see, and then
- 11:42Speaker 3: you can slow the game down and see what hitters
- 11:44Speaker 3: are doing too. It makes you, uh the ability to
- 11:46Speaker 3: execute pitches easier too. So it's gonna be all around.
- 11:50Speaker 3: It's gonna be great for him to be around these guys,
- 11:52Speaker 3: especially the either pitchers and catchers, how they communicate stuff
- 11:56Speaker 3: like that. So the guys are getting on the same page.
- 11:58Speaker 1: But when you look at what the Cardinals have in
- 12:01Speaker 1: terms of catching, right, that's a spot where sometimes you
- 12:04Speaker 1: don't have a lot of prospects. You have a ton
- 12:06Speaker 1: of offense. The Cardinals have an embarrassment of riches. You
- 12:09Speaker 1: have the prospects that already mentioned at the big league level.
- 12:12Speaker 1: You guys talked about Herrero, who's got a tremendous upside
- 12:16Speaker 1: and he wants to catch. You have Poso, you have
- 12:19Speaker 1: pa has. That's a pretty good position to be in
- 12:23Speaker 1: if you're if you're on a build, as they say,
- 12:25Speaker 1: or tear down, but as a as a as a
- 12:28Speaker 1: term build we'll go with for now. To have that
- 12:31Speaker 1: kind of equity behind the plate, you have a lot
- 12:35Speaker 1: of possibilities of things you can do.
- 12:38Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean I think you know, I'm not talking about,
- 12:40Speaker 6: you know, creating players that are you know, maybe become
- 12:44Speaker 6: good trade chips or or whatever it may be. But
- 12:46Speaker 6: I mean, you also, you just never know when injuries
- 12:48Speaker 6: are gonna happen. You never know when a guy cycle
- 12:51Speaker 6: of his career just hits a spot where he needs
- 12:54Speaker 6: to go to first or is you know, not doesn't
- 12:56Speaker 6: have the health to be a catcher. But man, Yanni
- 13:00Speaker 6: just from I never played with him, but everything I heard,
- 13:03Speaker 6: he just noticed the things that not everybody noticed.
- 13:06Speaker 7: And that's one thing about some of the catchers that
- 13:08Speaker 7: I have had.
- 13:09Speaker 6: The the ability to throw to the real Muto's, the Travino's,
- 13:13Speaker 6: the Rutchman's, maur Cash like I can name.
- 13:17Speaker 7: All of my catchers were awesome.
- 13:19Speaker 6: But they noticed the little things, and I knew that
- 13:22Speaker 6: they were putting in just as much work as I was,
- 13:24Speaker 6: and then allowed that trust. And I assume that's how
- 13:26Speaker 6: YACHTI was. I assume Yadi would notice whenever his second
- 13:30Speaker 6: ab of a guy when you pounded him inside, you know,
- 13:33Speaker 6: he took a half a step away from the plate
- 13:35Speaker 6: to assuming it's coming. Yanni noticed those things, and as
- 13:38Speaker 6: the catchers learned to notice those things, it's only gonna
- 13:41Speaker 6: make everybody else better.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Now, just your reminder for those watching. If you like merch,
- 13:48Speaker 1: we got merch. If you like Cardinal territory, we have
- 13:52Speaker 1: Cardinal Territory merch. Well, also I have foul Territory merch.
- 13:58Speaker 1: It's available Cardinal Territory shop dot com.
- 14:03Speaker 5: And we got everything.
- 14:04Speaker 1: You got the hoodies, you got the mugs, you got
- 14:06Speaker 1: the hats, and uh, it's pretty good stuff. So check
- 14:09Speaker 1: that out, do some shopping, maybe treat yourself to some merch.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Because everybody loves merch. By the way, I'm wearing a
- 14:16Speaker 1: foul Territory hat because they send it to me. I
- 14:18Speaker 1: don't know if they sent you guys gear, but they
- 14:20Speaker 1: did send me gear.
- 14:22Speaker 5: Maybe they don't have any of those beanies.
- 14:25Speaker 2: How do we not have a shirt.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Well, we're gonna get We're gonna get you guys, all right,
- 14:32Speaker 1: all right.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Andrew Jones Cardinal.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Carlos Beltran both voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Both worthy inductees when they finally are inducted. Although Carlos,
- 14:47Speaker 1: you know, had the little cheating scandal in Houston. We
- 14:50Speaker 1: can get to that later if time permits. Andrew Jones
- 14:54Speaker 1: great numbers, no question about it. To me, a Hall
- 14:56Speaker 1: of Famer. But when you look at his numbers, especially
- 15:00Speaker 1: if you're part of Cardinal Nation, you think to yourself, well,
- 15:03Speaker 1: what about Jimmy ballgame? And the numbers kind of speak
- 15:06Speaker 1: to themselves. If you look at THEO they're both sixty
- 15:09Speaker 1: plus war guys. Jones has better power numbers with home
- 15:14Speaker 1: runs and RBIs, but Jimmy has them with batting average,
- 15:19Speaker 1: on base percentage, slug ops Jones ten gold gloves Jimmy
- 15:24Speaker 1: Edmunds eight. But guys, to me, they're very comparable. And
- 15:28Speaker 1: I obviously I saw more of Edmunds than I did Jones.
- 15:32Speaker 5: Both great.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I always thought Edmunds was a tick better than Jones defensively,
- 15:37Speaker 1: but certainly if there's room for Jones, there should be
- 15:40Speaker 1: room for Edmunds, who didn't get enough votes to even
- 15:43Speaker 1: stay on the ballot. Matt Holliday, does jimmy ballgame belong
- 15:47Speaker 1: in the Hall at least at some point?
- 15:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:51Speaker 4: Look, I mean when you look at the numbers and
- 15:54Speaker 4: you think that Jim didn't get enough to stay on
- 15:57Speaker 4: the ballot for one year, and and and Andrew Jones
- 16:02Speaker 4: gets in, I think it's crazy. I think there's a
- 16:04Speaker 4: lot of these cases that hopefully this Veterans Committee is
- 16:08Speaker 4: going to be able to take a better look at
- 16:11Speaker 4: and and sort of clean up some of this.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Mess, if you will.
- 16:16Speaker 4: I mean, I look at carlos Veltron, who obviously you know,
- 16:19Speaker 4: we played with and I know very well as a
- 16:21Speaker 4: great player, and I look at his numbers, and then
- 16:23Speaker 4: I think about Lance Berkman, who didn't make off the
- 16:26Speaker 4: first ballot, and Lance I look at Lance's numbers and
- 16:30Speaker 4: I wonder how how he's not more appreciated for the
- 16:35Speaker 4: Hall of Fame.
- 16:36Speaker 2: So it is interesting to see how some of these
- 16:39Speaker 2: guys game.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Momentum and some guys just can't can't get any momentum
- 16:43Speaker 4: at all, don't even make it past the first ballot.
- 16:45Speaker 4: I mean, for you know, Lance Berkman and Jim Edmonds
- 16:49Speaker 4: to not make it off the first ballot of the
- 16:51Speaker 4: Hall of Fame, if to me, it's crazy. I mean,
- 16:53Speaker 4: I think when you start looking about looking at what
- 16:55Speaker 4: they say the qualifications are, you know, ten years of dominance,
- 16:59Speaker 4: I would say, you know, both of those guys. In
- 17:01Speaker 4: my mind, I didn't play Jim's you know, older than
- 17:05Speaker 4: than than me, and so I didn't play against him
- 17:07Speaker 4: a ton. You know, he was kind of at the
- 17:09Speaker 4: back end of his career when I played against him.
- 17:12Speaker 4: But having played against all these guys, I mean, if
- 17:17Speaker 4: if if Carlos Beltron and and Andrew Jenes are Hall
- 17:19Speaker 4: of Famers, then I think Jim Edmonds and Lance Berkman
- 17:21Speaker 4: are Hall of Famers. And I think that's why we have, uh,
- 17:24Speaker 4: this Veterans Committee is able to maybe take a deeper
- 17:28Speaker 4: dive into into some of this stuff.
- 17:29Speaker 2: And and now that we're we have more metrics, and
- 17:31Speaker 2: we have more numbers, and we have maybe an appreciation
- 17:36Speaker 2: for guys maybe that we didn't before.
- 17:41Speaker 4: But uh, like I said, my hat's off to Andrew,
- 17:44Speaker 4: and and and Carlos both deserving great players. But uh,
- 17:48Speaker 4: and for the conversations, take of the conversation and in
- 17:50Speaker 4: the in the cardinal, uh you know, world, I think
- 17:54Speaker 4: Lance Berkman and and and Jim Edmonds also belong in
- 17:58Speaker 4: the Hall of Fame.
- 18:00Speaker 5: I agree with that.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I should have brought up Berkman too, but you talk
- 18:03Speaker 1: about how things change with additional information and more metrics added.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Ted Simmons got in late when people started looking at
- 18:11Speaker 1: his career and going, wow, this guy deserves to be
- 18:14Speaker 1: in the Hall of Fame. So Lance, you know, to me,
- 18:17Speaker 1: I look at Edmunds specifically, also Berkman, but Jim Edmonds
- 18:22Speaker 1: to me, changed the game just defensively, offensively. He was
- 18:26Speaker 1: a dominant hitter for a good stretch, but he played
- 18:29Speaker 1: so shallow. He took away part of the field that
- 18:32Speaker 1: pitchers had to love that if you hit it over
- 18:34Speaker 1: his head, he'd go and get it. Just your thoughts
- 18:37Speaker 1: on Edmunds and Berkman as possible Hall of Famers at
- 18:42Speaker 1: some point down the road.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that now that Jones got in, I
- 18:47Speaker 3: think there's no doubt in the Veterans Committee. That's when
- 18:50Speaker 3: when Jim gets in, and I think it's going to
- 18:52Speaker 3: be an easy case for them to make now because
- 18:55Speaker 3: of Andrew getting in, which I think they both deserve
- 18:58Speaker 3: to be in in the just by eyeball test. When
- 19:03Speaker 3: I was growing up watching them play, like those are
- 19:05Speaker 3: two guys that you know when you're you kind of like, man,
- 19:08Speaker 3: that guy is a great player, and then you go
- 19:10Speaker 3: down and look at the numbers. They're very comparable. They
- 19:13Speaker 3: played for a long time, they did a lot of
- 19:15Speaker 3: great things. All the numbers are there to be Hall
- 19:17Speaker 3: of famers. You know, I don't know Lance's comparables to
- 19:22Speaker 3: uh Carlos because we didn't have those today because you've
- 19:25Speaker 3: dropped the ball on that gym. But Lance Berkman, Lance
- 19:29Speaker 3: Berkman was one of those guys too. Me are growing
- 19:31Speaker 3: up like, there's guys that you watched growing up and
- 19:34Speaker 3: you're like, man, that guy is like a generational player
- 19:38Speaker 3: type of person. And then you go back and look
- 19:40Speaker 3: at the numbers, and now you know why they stood off.
- 19:44Speaker 3: They stood out compared to everybody else. And I think
- 19:46Speaker 3: Lance Berkman's one of those people too. So with this,
- 19:50Speaker 3: with this vote, that could be good for both of
- 19:53Speaker 3: them in the Veterans Committee.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Okay, I did drop the ball some. The right thing
- 19:58Speaker 1: to do for a guy hosting is a me imediately
- 20:01Speaker 1: change direction and distract.
- 20:03Speaker 3: We understand you guys work together for a while, and
- 20:06Speaker 3: you've been writing Jim's cotail for years too, so we
- 20:08Speaker 3: totally get it.
- 20:09Speaker 1: We got it, that's true. But when you talk about
- 20:13Speaker 1: Carlos Beltron, and this might be dicey for former players, right,
- 20:17Speaker 1: there's a bunch of guys who won't get in at present.
- 20:21Speaker 1: It doesn't look like they have a path, but maybe
- 20:24Speaker 1: should because they cheat it and use performance enhancing drugs.
- 20:29Speaker 1: You look at belt Trunk, some would say, well that
- 20:32Speaker 1: guy was part of the cheating scandal. Does that mean
- 20:35Speaker 1: that we're going to open the door to guys who
- 20:38Speaker 1: cut corners? So I'll start with you, Kyle. Is that
- 20:40Speaker 1: a legitimate question for me to ask as I immediately
- 20:44Speaker 1: try to distract from me leaving out Lance Berkman.
- 20:48Speaker 6: Yeah, so the pivot's not going to work because I
- 20:50Speaker 6: would like to put some input as well Jim, And
- 20:55Speaker 6: so I'm gonna go ahead and do that and then
- 20:56Speaker 6: I'll go to the next part.
- 20:58Speaker 7: But fair enough. I mean, I think.
- 21:00Speaker 6: That there are certain times where it seems like the writers,
- 21:04Speaker 6: maybe this is their right, because it is their Hall
- 21:06Speaker 6: of fame, they try to be extremely exclusive and get
- 21:09Speaker 6: maybe the best center fielder from the generation. Jones and
- 21:14Speaker 6: Edmonds overlapped a lot right most of their career, so
- 21:18Speaker 6: if they in their mind they were trying to get
- 21:20Speaker 6: the best center fielder of the time. Okay, a few
- 21:23Speaker 6: more gold gloves, they were probably one in two most
- 21:26Speaker 6: years when Jim was in the NL. What Jim's six
- 21:30Speaker 6: home runs short of four hundred if he has four
- 21:32Speaker 6: hundred to see a shoe win is kind of silly. So,
- 21:36Speaker 6: I mean, I think those guys are right. The Veterans
- 21:39Speaker 6: Committee will get him in. It's just kind of crazy
- 21:41Speaker 6: they didn't even get a chance to stay on when
- 21:43Speaker 6: a lot of those numbers showed that he had a
- 21:45Speaker 6: better overall career. Lance Berkman probably the same thing. But
- 21:48Speaker 6: I'll follow what Lance lind said. We'd love to see it,
- 21:51Speaker 6: but I'm not going to sit here on my phone
- 21:53Speaker 6: and look at stats, you know, because you didn't let
- 21:55Speaker 6: him know we were gonna talk about it, all right,
- 21:56Speaker 6: So to pivot now to the cheating, I think, I think,
- 22:00Speaker 6: I think we have a totally different conversation when it
- 22:03Speaker 6: comes to signs dealing with video camera live feeds that
- 22:07Speaker 6: were given to the teams, not initiated by the players
- 22:13Speaker 6: and pds. All right, So I'm not trying to get
- 22:16Speaker 6: defensive and get on your caser gym, although maybe I should,
- 22:19Speaker 6: because I don't think that's quite an apples to apples comparison,
- 22:23Speaker 6: because if you look around the league, everybody was trying
- 22:26Speaker 6: to find a way to break catcher signs and to
- 22:30Speaker 6: figure out what pitch was coming, whether it's looking in
- 22:33Speaker 6: the glob whatever. Now, did everybody have a live camera
- 22:37Speaker 6: feed on the catcher's fingers every pitch? No, but I
- 22:40Speaker 6: can tell you the Astros were not the only team.
- 22:43Speaker 7: So I just think.
- 22:45Speaker 6: That I don't think that's gonna get held against So
- 22:48Speaker 6: if Alex Bregnant keeps having a great career like he is,
- 22:51Speaker 6: he's going to be a Hall of Famer, even though
- 22:53Speaker 6: he was on the Astros teams. Jose Al Tuvey, all
- 22:56Speaker 6: those guys. Sure it's a blemish, Maybe something hold it
- 23:00Speaker 6: against them. But man, if we're being honest, there was
- 23:03Speaker 6: a lot of teams who are trying to crack the
- 23:05Speaker 6: code on signs and get any advantage they could that
- 23:08Speaker 6: did not have to do with putting illegal substances into
- 23:11Speaker 6: their body.
- 23:13Speaker 5: Fair enough.
- 23:13Speaker 1: And I also, if you talk about if I can
- 23:15Speaker 1: pivot back writers trying to get the best at the time,
- 23:18Speaker 1: there was a time in baseball where you had Duke
- 23:21Speaker 1: Snyder in centerfield, Willie Mays in centerfield, Mickey mannlin centerfield,
- 23:26Speaker 1: all in New York. So it's not trying to get
- 23:28Speaker 1: the best at the time, it's trying to get all
- 23:30Speaker 1: the best guys in.
- 23:31Speaker 6: But Matt, centerfield is as premium centerfield is. I just
- 23:34Speaker 6: heard the other day there's like nine center fielders in
- 23:37Speaker 6: the Hall of Fame.
- 23:39Speaker 7: It's a really low number.
- 23:40Speaker 6: Somebody maybe nine is a little low, But how is
- 23:43Speaker 6: centerfield is premium a position and all the good players
- 23:46Speaker 6: nine to ten center fielders in the entire game, that's
- 23:49Speaker 6: not a lot.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Fair enough, Matt, I wanted to ask you about del
- 23:54Speaker 1: Tron and the cheating thing. Are you saying also, like, look,
- 23:58Speaker 1: I didn't get my pick. I'm just throwing a question
- 24:01Speaker 1: out there is there any similarity between the ped guys
- 24:07Speaker 1: and guys involved in that scandal.
- 24:10Speaker 2: I agree with Kyle. I don't really think that there's.
- 24:15Speaker 4: People have been trying to steal signs forever and now
- 24:17Speaker 4: was this a little bit over the line? Probably so,
- 24:23Speaker 4: I I do. I do think it's very different when
- 24:26Speaker 4: you started talking about guys were taking steroids and and
- 24:29Speaker 4: uh and pds and and uh. You know that, that
- 24:34Speaker 4: to me is is different certainly. Uh you know, I
- 24:39Speaker 4: think people will never uh not talk about Josel Tube
- 24:43Speaker 4: without bringing that up. I think Carlos kind of probably
- 24:47Speaker 4: gets around that a little bit because he wasn't you know,
- 24:49Speaker 4: it's kind of late in his career, and he wasn't
- 24:52Speaker 4: one of the main guys on their team at that point.
- 24:55Speaker 4: He was kind of more of a veteran uh leader,
- 24:58Speaker 4: didn't really wasn't really carrying a lot of the freight.
- 25:01Speaker 4: But I do think that guys like al Tu Bay
- 25:04Speaker 4: and and maybe maybe Bregmant a little bit. But I think,
- 25:07Speaker 4: you know, a guy like Alto Bay, fans are gonna
- 25:09Speaker 4: I think they're gonna tie that one to him, uh,
- 25:12Speaker 4: probably more than any of those other guys. I don't
- 25:14Speaker 4: think people when they think about Carlos Beltron's career goes
- 25:17Speaker 4: straight to.
- 25:20Speaker 2: You know, the Houston Astros scandal.
- 25:21Speaker 4: I think they think more about him as a met
- 25:24Speaker 4: and a royal than necessarily you know, the end when
- 25:27Speaker 4: he was with the Astros and and that that whole
- 25:29Speaker 4: thing happened.
- 25:29Speaker 2: So I think it's it's a totally different deal.
- 25:33Speaker 4: And and uh, could I say, you know, someday, would
- 25:37Speaker 4: have surprised me if they held out to be out
- 25:40Speaker 4: if he you know, if they say he was considered
- 25:42Speaker 4: a first ballot Hall of Famer, if if the voters
- 25:44Speaker 4: held it against him for a year or two, could
- 25:47Speaker 4: I see that happening?
- 25:48Speaker 2: Sure? Uh, But I don't think.
- 25:50Speaker 4: The rest of these guys, uh necessarily are going to
- 25:53Speaker 4: be thrown into the the cheating sort of category, like
- 25:56Speaker 4: like the steroid guys.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Lance you think guys eventually get in the hall, I
- 26:06Speaker 3: mean the way it's looking, No, I think they should.
- 26:10Speaker 3: And I think they should have a big old like
- 26:13Speaker 3: middle finger next to them, just to so everyone knows
- 26:16Speaker 3: what they did type thing. You know, maybe that's you know,
- 26:20Speaker 3: maybe that's the.
- 26:20Speaker 5: Black eye they need.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Hey, you're in, but double birds, you know what I'm
- 26:24Speaker 3: saying something like that, but I think they I think
- 26:28Speaker 3: they should be in like they're a story of the game,
- 26:30Speaker 3: and they were, they were, like some of them were
- 26:32Speaker 3: the best of their generation. And you can't tell me
- 26:35Speaker 3: for a ten year period of time like a good
- 26:38Speaker 3: chunk of players weren't doing it, And you can't tell
- 26:42Speaker 3: me that there's not a PD user in already.
- 26:46Speaker 5: I don't think. So That's where I'm at on that.
- 26:49Speaker 2: What do you think about that?
- 26:50Speaker 5: Kyle?
- 26:51Speaker 1: Final question and we'll let you guys go. H is
- 26:54Speaker 1: for you same as Lance. Do you think eventually ped
- 26:58Speaker 1: guys will get in? And are you four against that?
- 27:02Speaker 6: I think it'll probably be more on the Veterans Committee
- 27:06Speaker 6: and those guys if they were to look back and say, hey,
- 27:08Speaker 6: were we all kind of doing something or were a
- 27:10Speaker 6: lot of us kind of doing something? Let's go ahead
- 27:13Speaker 6: and recognize these guys.
- 27:14Speaker 7: I don't think the writers will get you, no, and
- 27:17Speaker 7: I don't necessarily think they should. I don't know. That's
- 27:20Speaker 7: a tough one.
- 27:21Speaker 6: I know it wasn't technically illegal in some instances, but
- 27:24Speaker 6: in a lot of instances it was.
- 27:27Speaker 1: History will tell of eventually. The plaques have middle fingers
- 27:30Speaker 1: on them for the ped guys as they get into
- 27:33Speaker 1: the hall. Gentlemen, thank you, good job as always, and
- 27:36Speaker 1: that will do it for this edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 27:39Speaker 1: We'll see you on the next edition, hopefully that one
- 27:42Speaker 1: won't suck.
