Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schreeger is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, Welcome to
- 0:24Speaker 1: the Season with Peter Schreger. We are in the beginning
- 0:27Speaker 1: of June, so you might say not much football going on,
- 0:30Speaker 1: but there is. The Chiefs are at the White House
- 0:34Speaker 1: as we speak. DeAndre Hopkins is a free agent as
- 0:37Speaker 1: we speak. Dalvin Cook is potentially going to be moving
- 0:41Speaker 1: but yet is still a Minnesota Viking as we speak.
- 0:44Speaker 1: But I had a really cool weekend and an opportunity
- 0:46Speaker 1: to speak with two of the biggest stars in the NFL,
- 0:49Speaker 1: amongst many other stars, some of them being previous guests
- 0:53Speaker 1: on this very podcast. So a couple of years back,
- 0:57Speaker 1: when I became pretty close with Paul Rudd, who we've
- 0:59Speaker 1: had on the show, he invited me to come to
- 1:02Speaker 1: an event held every year in Kansas City called the
- 1:05Speaker 1: Big Slick Case, and I saw it as a cool
- 1:08Speaker 1: opportunity to play in a celebrity softball game. I've never
- 1:11Speaker 1: been invited to do anything like that. I've never considered
- 1:13Speaker 1: myself a celebrity. I said that'd be neat. What I
- 1:16Speaker 1: didn't realize is that it's one of the coolest I
- 1:22Speaker 1: guess impactful weekends of the year for me, And every
- 1:26Speaker 1: year it hits me in a different way. And it's
- 1:27Speaker 1: because they use all the money and they raise all
- 1:30Speaker 1: the awareness and they do this amazing auction and they
- 1:33Speaker 1: sell tickets to an amazing show and it all goes
- 1:35Speaker 1: to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. And on Saturday
- 1:39Speaker 1: morning of the weekend, you visit the hospital and what
- 1:42Speaker 1: you're meeting is just right in your face, and it's
- 1:45Speaker 1: kids who are coping with cancer and you're visiting with them,
- 1:49Speaker 1: going room to room. And in your groups, you're with
- 1:53Speaker 1: some of the biggest entertainers in the world, but you're
- 1:54Speaker 1: also with some amazing athletes and just people that have
- 1:59Speaker 1: rare skills that can make a kid's day. So in
- 2:02Speaker 1: my group, Heidi Gardner, who is on SNL and it's
- 2:07Speaker 1: one of the main organizers of the group. We did
- 2:09Speaker 1: it last year together. She's just amazing. This comedian Sarah Tiana,
- 2:14Speaker 1: who you've probably seen before. She's hilarious. She was awesome
- 2:17Speaker 1: and was so good with the kids. And these two
- 2:19Speaker 1: twin brothers, the Potash Twins, who if you don't know
- 2:22Speaker 1: their work, they one of them plays Oh, I'm gonna
- 2:24Speaker 1: get them. One one plays trumpet, maybe they both play trumpet.
- 2:28Speaker 1: The other one plays what's hey, Aaron, you're listening, what's
- 2:30Speaker 1: the slide? One the trombone. Yeah, yeah, that's probably not
- 2:34Speaker 1: a great gift to go out there. Adieve is trumpet,
- 2:38Speaker 1: Ezra is the trombone. These kids are awesome. They're like
- 2:41Speaker 1: thirty from Omaha, Nebraska to Twin Brothers, and they've performed
- 2:46Speaker 1: with everybody in like jazz and in that world but all.
- 2:51Speaker 1: They've also been featured on countless different They've worked with Drake,
- 2:56Speaker 1: They've worked with Flow Rider, They've worked with just about everybody.
- 2:59Speaker 1: And they used to be in like John Baptiste's opening band,
- 3:02Speaker 1: like just and so we'd go around and we're meeting
- 3:04Speaker 1: with these kids and it's life changing for me. Its unelievable.
- 3:06Speaker 1: It's a smack in the face. I just had a kid.
- 3:09Speaker 1: You see what these parents are going through, You see
- 3:11Speaker 1: what these nurses and doctors do, and most partly see
- 3:13Speaker 1: what these kids are going through. So over the course
- 3:15Speaker 1: of the weekend, with various auction items and selling tickets,
- 3:19Speaker 1: we raised more than three million dollars over three days,
- 3:23Speaker 1: which is the coolest thing. You want a list of
- 3:26Speaker 1: the celebrities, Okay, I'll go there. So it's Paul Rudd,
- 3:31Speaker 1: Jason Sadeikis, Eric stone Street, Rob Wriggle, David Keckner, Heidi Gardner.
- 3:36Speaker 1: They organize it, and then I get to know. You're
- 3:38Speaker 1: with these people for seventy two hours, really, so you
- 3:41Speaker 1: get to know all the other people that come in
- 3:43Speaker 1: for it. And I really had a blast, like I'd
- 3:45Speaker 1: never met the comedian will Forte before. Aaron will Forte
- 3:50Speaker 1: is unbelievable. Obviously, we love them from Saturday Night Live
- 3:53Speaker 1: and mcgruber. He's a Raiders fan, he loves football, He's made.
- 3:56Speaker 1: How about this kid? And I sound so old and
- 3:59Speaker 1: so like, you know, not not out of my waters here,
- 4:01Speaker 1: but Finn Wolhard or wolf Hard? How am far? He's
- 4:06Speaker 1: from Hard Stranger Things in the Ghostbusters with Rudd. I
- 4:11Speaker 1: talked to him for an hour about the Seahawks. This
- 4:13Speaker 1: dude is an incredibly talented actor but also a musician
- 4:17Speaker 1: and knows his Seahawks inside and out because he was
- 4:19Speaker 1: from Vancouver and he loves football. You go down the
- 4:22Speaker 1: list here, you know Bobby Knavali, Joe Latriglia, you know,
- 4:27Speaker 1: Dylan Baker. These are these are like legends that I've
- 4:30Speaker 1: been watching for years and they're all hanging. And then
- 4:32Speaker 1: i meet weird Al Yankovich, who I'm like, all right,
- 4:36Speaker 1: weird Ayankovitch is a childhood I would say, not hero,
- 4:40Speaker 1: but like my brother and I would listen to weird
- 4:42Speaker 1: Al every album, no, every track, Like this is before
- 4:46Speaker 1: Sandler did his cdsbably probably after like Steve Martin and
- 4:50Speaker 1: his you know CDs and uh, you know, long after
- 4:54Speaker 1: Bob Newhart and his stuff, but like the Weird Al albums,
- 4:57Speaker 1: like I could tell you thirty songs by heart that
- 4:59Speaker 1: I used to love. And you're talking and I'm like,
- 5:01Speaker 1: do I call you weird Al or do I call
- 5:03Speaker 1: you Al? He's like, just call me Al and he's awesome.
- 5:06Speaker 1: He's awesome. And then obviously you know the the Grand
- 5:10Speaker 1: Pumba two big showcase items where Kelsey and Mahomes who
- 5:15Speaker 1: Aaron I got to hang out with Kelsey and Mahomes
- 5:17Speaker 1: for hours at a time in like an intimate setting,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and they're unbelievable. They're awesome guys. And it's funny because
- 5:24Speaker 1: Mahomes and again, we're always cognizant of the aggregators. I
- 5:27Speaker 1: don't know where this story will go. Mahomes and I
- 5:29Speaker 1: are talking ball for a while, and then we're talking,
- 5:32Speaker 1: you know, stuff that's probably not for air, about the
- 5:33Speaker 1: chiefs and what's going on in that organization and what
- 5:36Speaker 1: they're what what young players he's excited for, and you know,
- 5:39Speaker 1: then I get to you know, the other people in
- 5:41Speaker 1: the room, and you know, I weird Awl's there and
- 5:44Speaker 1: I'm like, you obviously love weird Al Yankovic. And He's like, you,
- 5:48Speaker 1: I know, I recognize the name, or I'm not familiar
- 5:50Speaker 1: with it. I'm like, oh, like that. I'm an old
- 5:53Speaker 1: I'm an old if you you know, I'm an old man.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Mahomes was born in the nineties. He has no feel
- 5:58Speaker 1: for weird Al Yankovic. Then we're on stage and I'm
- 6:02Speaker 1: sitting next to Mahomes and it's cool how the setup is.
- 6:04Speaker 1: There's all these different performers, so over the course of
- 6:06Speaker 1: the now this guy Logan Miz who's a country singer
- 6:09Speaker 1: and is awesome, just a great dude. David Cook from
- 6:12Speaker 1: American Idol, Chris Daughtry from American Idol, Darius Rucker from
- 6:17Speaker 1: Hoody and the Blosh, of Moffish mal but currently one
- 6:19Speaker 1: of the biggest acts in country obviously and the singer
- 6:23Speaker 1: of Wagon Wheel. He's there, but in the middle of
- 6:26Speaker 1: it is weird Al, and weird House steals the show.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Weird Alse steals the show, and I'm sitting next to
- 6:30Speaker 1: Mahomes and I'm like, you get it now. He's like, Oh,
- 6:32Speaker 1: this guy's amazing, this guy's unbelievable, And I just love
- 6:35Speaker 1: the idea of like me introducing Patrick Mahomes to weird
- 6:38Speaker 1: Al Yankovic. Like there in in the craziest mad libs
- 6:43Speaker 1: of a celebrity film in the blank, World's Greatest football
- 6:46Speaker 1: player unfamiliar with weird Al Yankovich, and Peter Schrager is
- 6:49Speaker 1: showing him the ropes and teaching him about songs like
- 6:52Speaker 1: eat It and Uh I Lost in I Lost in
- 6:55Speaker 1: Jeopardy Great Songs. Anyway, weird A Yankovitch was amazing. Uh
- 6:59Speaker 1: go down the listen more. Jake Tapper from CNN and
- 7:01Speaker 1: Earon met him, but I've been seeing on my TV
- 7:03Speaker 1: for years diehard Eagles fan. Great dude.
- 7:06Speaker 2: All right.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Sean Evans, the host of Hot Ones, we did this
- 7:10Speaker 1: together last year. We became friends. We text all the time.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I think Shawn and I might be just like the
- 7:15Speaker 1: same person, just except Sean does his celebrity interviews and
- 7:18Speaker 1: I do mine in football. We have the same likes,
- 7:21Speaker 1: the same everything. And then our VENN diagram that's completely
- 7:24Speaker 1: shaded is a gentleman named Richard Christy. Aaron, Does Richard
- 7:28Speaker 1: Christie's name mean anything to you?
- 7:30Speaker 2: Not at all?
- 7:31Speaker 1: Okay, so I'm not shocked. Richard Christy. I would say
- 7:36Speaker 1: he's a staff member slash whack pack member, slash the
- 7:40Speaker 1: greatest prank phone caller in the history of time from
- 7:44Speaker 1: the Howard Stern Show. And Richard has a long library
- 7:49Speaker 1: of disgusting bits and stuff that I wouldn't feel comfortable
- 7:52Speaker 1: even sharing on this iHeart podcast that has made me
- 7:55Speaker 1: cry over the years, and just how disgusting his bits are,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and yet he's also the most genius prank call magician,
- 8:04Speaker 1: maybe since the Jerky Boys. So Richard CHRISTI, Sean and
- 8:08Speaker 1: I sat with Richard Christie on Friday night as we're
- 8:12Speaker 1: having a few cocktails slash a dozen beers, and he's
- 8:16Speaker 1: going through his greatest prank calls and his inspirations and
- 8:20Speaker 1: how they come about. And I could do a documentary
- 8:23Speaker 1: on like the the the nucleus of a great prank
- 8:27Speaker 1: phone call, and Richard Christi, of course is the master
- 8:29Speaker 1: of them all. And Sean and I are just like,
- 8:32Speaker 1: you know, at his on his knee, like listening like
- 8:34Speaker 1: two kids at like at the campfire to like a
- 8:37Speaker 1: great mentor teaching us the ropes. Shawn Evans is I
- 8:41Speaker 1: think I've said this, uh, and I'm not looking to
- 8:44Speaker 1: be on a show. I love this because he was
- 8:46Speaker 1: telling me that, like people like pitch themselves on a
- 8:48Speaker 1: show and they're not. They're not necessarily a list and
- 8:50Speaker 1: it's always a very awkward conversation. And I'm like, I'm
- 8:52Speaker 1: so glad I've never like pitching myself too. I think
- 8:56Speaker 1: it goes like for me personally, Howard Stern as far
- 9:00Speaker 1: as celebrity interviewer goes Letterman because he was so off
- 9:05Speaker 1: kilter in his ways. He didn't like worship the guests.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I really do you know. I think Mark Marin's a
- 9:12Speaker 1: great celebrity interviewer, as much as people want to knock
- 9:15Speaker 1: him in some of his own you know, whatever it
- 9:18Speaker 1: is in his way about going it. And then I
- 9:19Speaker 1: think it's Sean Evans for this generation and if you're
- 9:22Speaker 1: not familiar with hot ones, it's so hard to explain.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Like Jason mccordy wasn't familiar with it, so I started
- 9:26Speaker 1: to explain it to him today on Good Morning Football
- 9:28Speaker 1: off camera, and I'm like, so, there's a gimmick, And
- 9:31Speaker 1: the gimmick is there's ten hot wings and you're asking
- 9:34Speaker 1: ten questions as you eat wings that get increasingly hotter
- 9:38Speaker 1: and hotter and hotter, and by the end the interviewee
- 9:40Speaker 1: is sweating and they're all out of sorts and like,
- 9:43Speaker 1: and he's like, oh, it's kind of like that like
- 9:45Speaker 1: Potato Chip Hot Chip Challenge. I'm like, I hate that.
- 9:48Speaker 1: It's like limit, Aaron, You've watched all the hot ones, right, he's.
- 9:52Speaker 3: An encouraged not all of them, but yeah, I've.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Seen but like most of them.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Like, first of all, I would say this hot Ones
- 10:00Speaker 1: is the equivalent now of like being on the cover
- 10:03Speaker 1: of GQ magazine or Sanity Fair in the two early
- 10:08Speaker 1: two thousands, or like, you know, the cover of Esquire
- 10:11Speaker 1: there's a spread, there's an art of Vogue. Like those
- 10:14Speaker 1: don't really exist in the same way these. No one's
- 10:16Speaker 1: like buying you know, Vogue to read the Big Interview
- 10:18Speaker 1: anymore or buying GQ to read the Big Interview. But
- 10:21Speaker 1: back when I was starting off as a writer, like
- 10:23Speaker 1: you do one celebrity profile when you're promoting a movie,
- 10:26Speaker 1: and you do it with one of these men's magazines,
- 10:27Speaker 1: and that's just what it would be, and you do
- 10:29Speaker 1: it and then you get the access to it. That's
- 10:31Speaker 1: what Sean Evans' show is now. I mean this week
- 10:34Speaker 1: I just looked he got Julia Louis Dreyfus, So I
- 10:35Speaker 1: don't see doing a ton of you know, last week
- 10:38Speaker 1: with Sadeikis as ted LASO was doing their finale, he
- 10:40Speaker 1: had Paul Rudd, obviously, Matt Damon, Jake Jonhall, and like
- 10:44Speaker 1: they're the greatest interviews. They're the greatest interviews we've got
- 10:47Speaker 1: right now. And I'm not, you know, at all advertising
- 10:50Speaker 1: or doing commercial but to hang with Sean, like he's cool,
- 10:53Speaker 1: he's a cool dude, and that event, the Big Slick
- 10:56Speaker 1: is a great opportunity to get to know people like
- 10:58Speaker 1: this and oh, by the way, diehard Bears fan who
- 11:02Speaker 1: is all in on Justin Fields and it's Buddy Nick
- 11:05Speaker 1: who he brought as his guest, and we were hanging
- 11:08Speaker 1: the whole time. He's a diehard Bears fan who's all
- 11:10Speaker 1: in on Justin Fields. And if the two of them
- 11:13Speaker 1: are at all symbolic of Bears fans right now, we
- 11:17Speaker 1: might as well cancel the season and just have the
- 11:19Speaker 1: parade and put the gold jacket on Justin Darnfields. Like
- 11:22Speaker 1: the amount of Bears fans who I did a list of,
- 11:25Speaker 1: like breakout players or something, and on the show I
- 11:28Speaker 1: didn't put Justin feel like the Justin Fields hype is
- 11:32Speaker 1: out of control right now, and maybe I'm proven wrong,
- 11:35Speaker 1: And then I'm saying, let's temper it for a second.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Long story, short Seaan Evans, diehard Bears fan, knows his
- 11:40Speaker 1: stuff and big Seleck. They as a whole raised three
- 11:46Speaker 1: million dollars this weekend, but over the course of fourteen
- 11:48Speaker 1: years have raised twenty one million dollars for a children's hospital.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Real quick, before we get to our guest, I will
- 11:55Speaker 1: tell you that Patrick Mahomes made the greatest play I've
- 11:57Speaker 1: ever seen in a baseball, softball t ball game. And
- 12:02Speaker 1: he did it. And let me set the context for you.
- 12:04Speaker 1: You've got all these actors and comedians and like you know,
- 12:09Speaker 1: there's a couple guys who might have played college athletics
- 12:12Speaker 1: at some point. There's a few who maybe play in
- 12:15Speaker 1: a men's softball league. Patrick Mahomes will be the greatest
- 12:18Speaker 1: athlete living right now. So it's a bunch of third
- 12:21Speaker 1: theater nerds more or less, and Patrick Mahomes playing softball,
- 12:24Speaker 1: so you think he would take it easy. Mahomes hit
- 12:27Speaker 1: a home run. Didn't have to do that to show
- 12:28Speaker 1: everybody up, but he did. And then there was a
- 12:31Speaker 1: ground ball. The ball, I want to say, was hit
- 12:34Speaker 1: by Eric stone Street, who we've had on the show
- 12:36Speaker 1: and is just a lovely guy and great ambassador for
- 12:39Speaker 1: Kansas City and the Big Slick. It's a dribbler to
- 12:41Speaker 1: third base. Mahomes picks it up, throws a softball behind
- 12:47Speaker 1: the back from the third base line to first base,
- 12:50Speaker 1: where I believe Bobby Countavalli, the actor was playing first base.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Throws it on a rope and you can google this,
- 12:57Speaker 1: you can look for it online right now. Mahomes throws
- 13:00Speaker 1: it perfectly, and it's a behind the back flip ninety
- 13:03Speaker 1: yards whatever, ninety feet whatever it is from third base
- 13:07Speaker 1: to first it's on a rope. He throws out stone
- 13:09Speaker 1: Street and everyone's just like, oh, Mahomes. It's insane. It
- 13:13Speaker 1: is an insane athletic play. I've never seen more. Imagine
- 13:16Speaker 1: throwing a softball. Softball is not a baseball softball behind
- 13:20Speaker 1: your back, ninety feet, sixty feet whatever, third to first
- 13:24Speaker 1: is on a rope. And he did that. And so
- 13:26Speaker 1: after the night. Next night we're hanging out backstage and
- 13:29Speaker 1: I got a lot of time with Patrick. He was cool,
- 13:31Speaker 1: and I was like, I'm like, you realize you didn't.
- 13:34Speaker 1: You didn't look like you pick up the ball and
- 13:36Speaker 1: in one motion you'd throw it like that's an insane
- 13:38Speaker 1: thing to do athletically. It's it's just not normal. And
- 13:41Speaker 1: he's like, and I'm gonna do my Mahomes voice was like,
- 13:43Speaker 1: h you know, if I if I you know, if
- 13:46Speaker 1: I threw it until the stands, we would all laughed
- 13:48Speaker 1: about it. So I figure, why not I went for it? Yeah, yeah,
- 13:50Speaker 1: why not? I went for it as if, as if
- 13:52Speaker 1: it's the easiest thing. Like in one hundred tries, I
- 13:55Speaker 1: could not have done what Mahomes did with that flipper
- 13:58Speaker 1: over behind the back, and yet he nails it. He
- 14:01Speaker 1: throws him out. Mahomes and Kelsey hung for like five
- 14:05Speaker 1: hours on Saturday, night and they were just great. Kelsey
- 14:08Speaker 1: did Hot Ones Challenge. He was sweating his face off
- 14:12Speaker 1: and just eating the hottest wings. And I can't say
- 14:15Speaker 1: enough about those two guys. What great ambassadors for the sport.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Two awesome young men, and I had an amazing weekend. Myhomes
- 14:21Speaker 1: had a good point. We were talking for a while again,
- 14:23Speaker 1: I feel like I'm his you know, biographer at this point,
- 14:25Speaker 1: because we hung out one night. He's like, I'm not
- 14:27Speaker 1: sure this could work in LA or New York or
- 14:31Speaker 1: Kansas City. Special. You've got a this great celebrity corps
- 14:34Speaker 1: that these guys all love to give back, but also
- 14:37Speaker 1: like the city really really really you know, rallies around
- 14:42Speaker 1: causes like this, and for they sold out an arena
- 14:46Speaker 1: for this Saturday night event and for all these different celebrities.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Darius Rutger was on a we do the thing and
- 14:51Speaker 1: there's like a little post party, and post party went
- 14:54Speaker 1: longer for others than they did for me. And I
- 14:56Speaker 1: take the elevator down for the post party with Darius Rucker,
- 14:59Speaker 1: who I'm like, oh my god, Like I'm in an
- 15:00Speaker 1: elevator just you know, me and him and his guys
- 15:02Speaker 1: from his band and I'm like, I'm going to bed.
- 15:05Speaker 1: What are you doing? And he's like, Oh, we're hopping
- 15:08Speaker 1: in the tour bus. We've got to show in Nashville tomorrow,
- 15:10Speaker 1: like for him on his one night off to be
- 15:12Speaker 1: in Kansas City. But that's kind of what Kansas City
- 15:16Speaker 1: is that it attracts these people to come and those
- 15:18Speaker 1: fans are amazing. So as I go on and on
- 15:21Speaker 1: about why the Kansas City Chiefs fans are the greatest
- 15:23Speaker 1: thing and why Kansas City is most amazing city, I
- 15:25Speaker 1: record this from New York City, where I would never
- 15:27Speaker 1: leave in a million years if I didn't have to,
- 15:29Speaker 1: because I'm a New Yorker. But if there's a second
- 15:31Speaker 1: city I can say I can call a home. In
- 15:34Speaker 1: a weird way, I do love that Kansas City, Missouri.
- 15:37Speaker 1: All right, we've got an awesome guest. I'm so excited
- 15:39Speaker 1: for it. I've got a backstory. I'll share it with
- 15:41Speaker 1: you once we get him on. But right after this,
- 15:43Speaker 1: one of the icons of comedy and acting over the
- 15:46Speaker 1: last thirty to forty years and truly an awesome dude,
- 15:50Speaker 1: the Great Hanka's Area joins us after this. As I
- 15:57Speaker 1: said in the monologue, I've been a fan of this
- 15:59Speaker 1: man for many, many years. You know, I'm from the Simpsons,
- 16:02Speaker 1: from the Bird Cage. And now he's got this new
- 16:04Speaker 1: amazing program on HBO called The Idol, which I want
- 16:08Speaker 1: to hear all about. But more than anything, I just
- 16:10Speaker 1: want to geek out with him because's a New York
- 16:11Speaker 1: sports fan. Hank Azariel, Welcome to the season with Peter Scheger.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Thank you, Peter. Very happy to be here.
- 16:17Speaker 4: I've told you in person and now through zoom and
- 16:20Speaker 4: now and for everybody. I'm a big fan of yours,
- 16:22Speaker 4: so I'm excited to join you as a sports fan
- 16:25Speaker 4: and just as just as a human.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Being as well.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I am a great purveyor of pop culture and sports.
- 16:31Speaker 1: So can I share where we saw each other In
- 16:34Speaker 1: the most amazing of situations. I'm jogging, so if you
- 16:38Speaker 1: know me and you see me, I'm not in shape.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I'm trying to get in shape. So I was jogging
- 16:42Speaker 1: one morning, like putting on a farce that I'm gonna
- 16:44Speaker 1: suddenly be the guy who runs around Brooklyn Heights. And
- 16:47Speaker 1: I'm running and out of the corner of my eye
- 16:50Speaker 1: I see Hanka's area and I'm like it was eight
- 16:51Speaker 1: in the morning, and I'm like, this is unbelievable. I
- 16:54Speaker 1: love this guy. Do I stop? Do I keep on
- 16:55Speaker 1: going and listen to my Mark Maren podcast as I'm
- 16:57Speaker 1: running around the block, or do I just And then
- 17:01Speaker 1: Hank gives me the nod. I'm like, I gotta stop.
- 17:03Speaker 1: We had an awesome short conversation. But I even know
- 17:06Speaker 1: you lived New York. I love the fact you're in
- 17:07Speaker 1: New Yorker.
- 17:08Speaker 4: I grew up in Queen's moved back here ten years ago.
- 17:11Speaker 4: I had seen you a little before, just from a distance,
- 17:13Speaker 4: at the Nick gad one of the Nick playoff games,
- 17:16Speaker 4: one that they won. So yeah, I've been you know,
- 17:19Speaker 4: I know, I know you anywhere. I've been a fan
- 17:21Speaker 4: for a long time.
- 17:22Speaker 1: The next thing was cool because Joe Shane, the GM
- 17:24Speaker 1: of the Giants, was there and he was sitting I
- 17:27Speaker 1: guess a row in front of you. And I go
- 17:28Speaker 1: and say hi to Joe, and Mike Breen starts coming
- 17:31Speaker 1: up from the stands and I think Mike Breen's making
- 17:33Speaker 1: a gesture to say hi to me, and I was
- 17:35Speaker 1: about to geek out. He blows right past me and
- 17:37Speaker 1: I look behind me and there's Hanka's area that Mike
- 17:39Speaker 1: Breen is saying hello to him, like, all right, that's humbling,
- 17:41Speaker 1: that's fun.
- 17:42Speaker 4: I love Mike Green also, I've been chatting with him
- 17:45Speaker 4: for years at nick Games and elsewhere.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Awesome voice. The move to New York. You were in
- 17:50Speaker 1: California for years, I'm sure because I'm raising a kid
- 17:53Speaker 1: in New York now too, and it's a fight every day,
- 17:55Speaker 1: and yet I've tried to grit it out, like why
- 17:58Speaker 1: did you move back to New York from LA after
- 18:00Speaker 1: all those years?
- 18:01Speaker 2: One of the reasons was you mentioned kids.
- 18:03Speaker 4: I really didn't want to raise my son in the
- 18:06Speaker 4: to show business, which you can't avoid in Los Angeles,
- 18:10Speaker 4: There's just no way. So I wanted him to have
- 18:13Speaker 4: a more eclectic, a more varied look at humanity.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Than just through the lens of people who work in
- 18:21Speaker 2: show business.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Yeah there's anything wrong with those people, but it's really
- 18:24Speaker 4: only one province heard from.
- 18:26Speaker 2: And this sounds like a joke, and it kind of is.
- 18:29Speaker 2: There's only have a joke.
- 18:30Speaker 4: I wanted to raise a Mets fan, yes, just so
- 18:35Speaker 4: that I have support for this in my old age,
- 18:38Speaker 4: and even in doing that, and it's worked. I have
- 18:40Speaker 4: a Mets fan. He's about to be fourteen tomorrow. In fact,
- 18:43Speaker 4: oh congrats, I'd say twice a year though all through
- 18:46Speaker 4: his childhood he has come to me very earnestly and said, Dad,
- 18:50Speaker 4: are you sure.
- 18:51Speaker 2: We can't be Yankee fans?
- 18:52Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 18:53Speaker 4: I'm like, it's a very smart question. I don't blame
- 18:56Speaker 4: you for asking it, but no, sadly we can't.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Yeah. I love that. And the Mets this year, everyone
- 19:02Speaker 1: picking him before the season to win the World Series.
- 19:04Speaker 1: They actually got hot again. But it's so funny. I'm like, oh,
- 19:06Speaker 1: my Mets, are you guys seriously buying in?
- 19:07Speaker 2: I mean, you know.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Something assure enough. They start the season just a million
- 19:10Speaker 1: things go wrong, But that's the life and the ethos
- 19:13Speaker 1: of being a metsvan.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm Mets Jets nick. So I hear it from
- 19:16Speaker 4: three corner. I'm getting it from my friends now about
- 19:19Speaker 4: the Jets. You don't really believe they're canna have a
- 19:22Speaker 4: good season, do you. It's like, well, that part of
- 19:25Speaker 4: being Jets Mets nicks, as you have hope to start
- 19:27Speaker 4: out and then you get destroyed totally.
- 19:30Speaker 1: And the Jets thing is unbelievable. I mean, he's doing
- 19:33Speaker 1: everything right. You and I live in New York, like
- 19:36Speaker 1: he's doing it. It's almost like, if I can go
- 19:38Speaker 1: back to my younger self, how would I have done this?
- 19:41Speaker 1: Rogers is thirty nine, so he can see the script before.
- 19:44Speaker 1: He's wiser than some of the other young quarterbacks. He's
- 19:46Speaker 1: wiser than some of these other Jets rookies that have
- 19:48Speaker 1: come in where he knows little gestures, going to the
- 19:51Speaker 1: next game at the Garden, taking a young star like
- 19:54Speaker 1: sauce with him, going to the Rangers game, going to
- 19:57Speaker 1: Taylor Swift a couple of nights, just being present. It
- 20:00Speaker 1: goes such a long way to be like I am
- 20:02Speaker 1: for Aaron Rodgers to be like I am proud to
- 20:03Speaker 1: be a New York Jet. It is I mean, Jets
- 20:06Speaker 1: fans are over the moon right now just actually having
- 20:08Speaker 1: a reason to be proud and excited.
- 20:10Speaker 4: Well, yes, one, it would be hard. It would be
- 20:13Speaker 4: very difficult not to be wiser than many of the
- 20:15Speaker 4: Jets rookies who have come in. That's a very low bar.
- 20:18Speaker 4: But my cynical friend points out, like, yeah, and the
- 20:21Speaker 4: camera's been there every time he's done a thing.
- 20:24Speaker 1: That's the Giants fans talking. That's what the Giants fans
- 20:26Speaker 1: are saying. Like enough can he go into public without
- 20:29Speaker 1: having you know, a million cameras around a hilarious but
- 20:32Speaker 1: you know, honestly, I.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Was against the Rogers thing, adamantly talk about it. I
- 20:37Speaker 2: did not.
- 20:37Speaker 4: I think he gotta get you know, because I know
- 20:40Speaker 4: from Diva energy coming into situation, you don't want it.
- 20:44Speaker 2: See it's a deal with the devil. You don't want
- 20:46Speaker 2: to do it.
- 20:47Speaker 4: They have nice chemistry in that locker room. They need
- 20:49Speaker 4: a mench I was all I was on the car train. No,
- 20:54Speaker 4: no weird pun intended there, but I thought that, you know,
- 20:57Speaker 4: that's I think that car I still think I don't
- 20:59Speaker 4: know how I'll do in New Orleans, but I think
- 21:01Speaker 4: he was the change of scenery is going to really help.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Him, and I think he was about to raise his game.
- 21:06Speaker 4: And I saw nothing but misery and problems from Aaron
- 21:10Speaker 4: if we even got them, you know, which was not
- 21:14Speaker 4: a slam dunk at all. But now I gotta say,
- 21:18Speaker 4: I mean, I do admit that for one or two
- 21:20Speaker 4: seasons it's a bigger swing. There's a lower floor because
- 21:25Speaker 4: so many crazy things can go wrong, but it is
- 21:29Speaker 4: definitely a higher ceiling and he is doing all the
- 21:32Speaker 4: right things. And now I'm kind of psyched to see
- 21:34Speaker 4: he seems revitalized.
- 21:36Speaker 2: He just seems psyched.
- 21:37Speaker 1: He went he goes to the I mean he go
- 21:39Speaker 1: to Ota in the last few years. Yeah, the Packers.
- 21:41Speaker 1: He's there, he's president. And then we had a great story.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Zonovan Knight, who's one of the running backs, told us
- 21:47Speaker 1: a great story on Good Morning Football last week that
- 21:49Speaker 1: you know, they're in the running backs room, which is
- 21:51Speaker 1: such a you know, it's only five guys and it's
- 21:53Speaker 1: a running backs coach and Hacket's going through the offense
- 21:55Speaker 1: and it's in a dark room and they're talking about
- 21:57Speaker 1: some play and it's just the running backs. And then
- 21:59Speaker 1: in the back of the room, without them knowing it,
- 22:01Speaker 1: a voice pops in, like the voice of God, and
- 22:03Speaker 1: it's like, actually, Hackett, I think we should do this,
- 22:05Speaker 1: this and this, And it was Rogers just like over
- 22:07Speaker 1: listening like the running backs room, just wanting to lend
- 22:09Speaker 1: a hand to like teach the offense. And you hear
- 22:11Speaker 1: that and you're like heart melts. You're like, yes, that's
- 22:12Speaker 1: what we've been waiting for.
- 22:13Speaker 4: That's you know, my main problem with him, apart from
- 22:16Speaker 4: you know, immunization, word games and Joe Rogan appearances and
- 22:22Speaker 4: just weird stuff. Was that like last season? And finally
- 22:27Speaker 4: I think you said it, and not too many people did,
- 22:30Speaker 4: but I was wondering why more people didn't.
- 22:32Speaker 2: It was like the dude wouldn't get with his receivers.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Last year, they didn't gel till Week nine.
- 22:37Speaker 4: They probably would have made a playoff run if he
- 22:40Speaker 4: bothered in the office.
- 22:41Speaker 1: They started clicking later on in the year because he
- 22:44Speaker 1: wasn't with these young guys the first, you know, not to.
- 22:46Speaker 4: Mention if you noticed his first game or two, which
- 22:49Speaker 4: I'm sure you did, Peter, I mean throws to who
- 22:51Speaker 4: is this good Watson? Judiam once got kid, dropped it,
- 22:56Speaker 4: rolled his eyes and throwed him again for two weeks.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Come on, kind of parenting is this? So?
- 23:03Speaker 4: I just hated that, you know, but it doesn't seem
- 23:06Speaker 4: like he's doing that.
- 23:07Speaker 2: I think he needed to change his scenery worse than
- 23:09Speaker 2: Derek Carr.
- 23:10Speaker 1: No, totally, and you know Derek Carr when they were
- 23:13Speaker 1: meeting with him. I too, I said it on Good
- 23:15Speaker 1: Morning Football. I said it at the combine. I'm like,
- 23:17Speaker 1: he's an adult in the room, he's got four kids.
- 23:20Speaker 1: He's not going to embarrass your franchise. In any way.
- 23:22Speaker 1: He's not going to do anything out of school, and
- 23:23Speaker 1: like he'll come and he'll be a complete professional and
- 23:26Speaker 1: he'll be what the Jets probably needed at quarterback and
- 23:29Speaker 1: upgrade an adult in the room. Rogers was a huge
- 23:31Speaker 1: home run swing, and I'm with you. At first, I
- 23:34Speaker 1: was like Car would have been enough. They have a
- 23:35Speaker 1: really good team and Car's fine and he needed to
- 23:38Speaker 1: And then you know, I'm just hearing things from the
- 23:40Speaker 1: Jets coaches like they are freaking out. This guy. Rodgers
- 23:43Speaker 1: has been unbelievable.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Well his first press day, just the way he talks
- 23:48Speaker 4: about Joe Namath, I gets it.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Hello, And it's not hard to attract the Jet fan.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Like I'm not saying that he's patronizing condescending, but like
- 23:57Speaker 1: there are some real easy roads to go down to
- 23:59Speaker 1: like attract. I want to be here his first and
- 24:02Speaker 1: then you start referencing name it and you talk about,
- 24:04Speaker 1: you know, all the young talent and how good these
- 24:06Speaker 1: guys are. He gets it. That's the thing. I don't
- 24:08Speaker 1: think he's playing anybody. I think he's honest and genuine,
- 24:10Speaker 1: but he also he knows what to do in this situation.
- 24:14Speaker 1: And his pr game has been ten out of ten.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Since he got here.
- 24:17Speaker 4: To the point where, you know, it feels like God,
- 24:20Speaker 4: he should have been here ages ago. Like, right, the
- 24:22Speaker 4: guy was kind of made. Who else could step into
- 24:25Speaker 4: this media market and be like you No, no, the
- 24:28Speaker 4: guy makes news every time he opens his mouth anyway, so.
- 24:31Speaker 1: It makes sense, all right. So I'm sitting at home
- 24:34Speaker 1: and I'm watching The Succession finale and I'm all wrapped
- 24:37Speaker 1: up in Tom Wabm's gams and.
- 24:38Speaker 2: What spoilers because I'm about to binge season.
- 24:41Speaker 1: I'm not saying a word. I'm not saying a word,
- 24:43Speaker 1: all right. You know there's a character named Tom Wams gams.
- 24:46Speaker 1: I know that's all it is. And there's a promo
- 24:49Speaker 1: for this show, The Idol, and I'm like, this looks interesting.
- 24:54Speaker 1: The weekend is in it, and I want to say,
- 24:57Speaker 1: Lily Rose Depp, who is Johnny Depp's daughter? Is it this?
- 25:00Speaker 1: I'm like, and there your head, your face pops up
- 25:03Speaker 1: doing an accent. I go, what is Hank's love? I
- 25:05Speaker 1: love Hank's What is this show? And I haven't seen
- 25:08Speaker 1: it yet? Only one episode is aired, but everyone's texting
- 25:10Speaker 1: me like, have you seen The Idol yet? It's awesome.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Have you seen it yet?
- 25:13Speaker 3: So?
- 25:13Speaker 1: What is this show and what is your role on
- 25:15Speaker 1: the program?
- 25:16Speaker 2: I play and it was an Israeli accent to her.
- 25:19Speaker 2: I play again named Ram, who is the manager of
- 25:25Speaker 2: Lily Rose.
- 25:25Speaker 5: Deb's character named Jocelyne, kind of a you know, a
- 25:30Speaker 5: pop eyed, a troubled pop idol, you know of the
- 25:34Speaker 5: shall we say, maybe the Britney Spears moment, and she's
- 25:39Speaker 5: in the middle of a bit of a personal and
- 25:41Speaker 5: professional crisis. As the story picks up, gets involved with
- 25:46Speaker 5: this Weekend character.
- 25:48Speaker 4: He's really good. He plays this like Sico club owner
- 25:52Speaker 4: the Weekend does want to a producer who They strike
- 25:56Speaker 4: up this pretty intense physical emotional relationship pretty quickly, and
- 26:02Speaker 4: he starts moving in on our life, and me and
- 26:06Speaker 4: the team of folks who make a lot of money
- 26:08Speaker 4: off her aren't too thrilled. Yeah, And I actually my
- 26:13Speaker 4: character really loves her like a daughter found her when
- 26:16Speaker 4: she was eleven performing a ball in the valley and
- 26:20Speaker 4: took her through like the whole Disney thing, and then she,
- 26:23Speaker 4: you know, her first album went huge, and so it's
- 26:27Speaker 4: really kind of a voyeuristic window into the music industry.
- 26:32Speaker 1: And Dan Levy, who we loved in Shit's Creek, Key's
- 26:34Speaker 1: I believe the agent.
- 26:35Speaker 2: What's his role in ex He's a publicist?
- 26:38Speaker 1: Perfect.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:39Speaker 1: And it's created by Sam Levinson, who did Euphoria, right.
- 26:44Speaker 4: Sam Levinson, who does the does Euphoria. Euphoria is an
- 26:49Speaker 4: amazingly great show. But every parent's nightmare that show.
- 26:53Speaker 1: I have not seen it, and everyone's like, if you
- 26:54Speaker 1: ever have a daughter, do not or son go down
- 26:57Speaker 1: that road? Or son? Okay, yeah, I.
- 26:59Speaker 4: Mean look, that's why I didn't. I'd worked with Sam
- 27:02Speaker 4: is Barry Levins and son Legendarya Barry Levitz. I worked
- 27:05Speaker 4: with them a few years ago on an HBO film
- 27:09Speaker 4: called The Wizard.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Of Lies, doing de Niro as Bernie Madoff.
- 27:13Speaker 1: It was great. I remember it.
- 27:15Speaker 4: He was good and got along well with Sam. Then
- 27:19Speaker 4: he called me about this. I was like, sure, this
- 27:23Speaker 4: sounds amazing, but I didn't even realize that Sam had
- 27:26Speaker 4: done Euphoria. And then I started working with Sam and
- 27:29Speaker 4: loving him, trying to make a sports analogy to Sam. Sam,
- 27:35Speaker 4: he's a genuine filmmaker, like when there aren't too many
- 27:38Speaker 4: around anymore, writer, director, with a real vision. He would
- 27:43Speaker 4: be like somebody to make an NFL comparison like innovating
- 27:48Speaker 4: an offense, like somebody bringing in the next version of
- 27:50Speaker 4: an offense. You know, I haven't been with somebody like
- 27:54Speaker 4: that in a long time, and you noticed it right over.
- 27:56Speaker 4: You're like, because nothing's being done the way it usually.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Is, and this is a different approach to it and
- 28:01Speaker 1: you're just as unique and the results are there.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Well at first you're like, what the hell is all
- 28:08Speaker 2: you know?
- 28:09Speaker 1: And can give us an example because like Chip Kelly
- 28:12Speaker 1: came in and did the spread offense and everyone was
- 28:14Speaker 1: like that don't never work in the NFL, And it
- 28:15Speaker 1: did for a little bit. But like on the set
- 28:17Speaker 1: or in a movie or a show, what would be
- 28:19Speaker 1: something unique to the million other directors who you've worked with.
- 28:22Speaker 4: Well, the way I experienced that, Peter was I got
- 28:24Speaker 4: there and you you you know, you get the schedule.
- 28:27Speaker 4: We got three sheet scenes we're going to shoot today,
- 28:30Speaker 4: and you prepare them. Yeah, be like knowing the playbook. Okay,
- 28:34Speaker 4: so you get there and first thing that somebody we're
- 28:36Speaker 4: not doing those today, Like okay, any reason, we don't know,
- 28:42Speaker 4: Welcome to the idol, Like all right, well what are
- 28:47Speaker 4: we doing? They're doing these three scenes and the explanation
- 28:50Speaker 4: in that day seemed to be that Sam was shooting
- 28:53Speaker 4: on film, which is different than shooting digitally, and the
- 28:57Speaker 4: light had changed in a way. That and we're shooting
- 28:59Speaker 4: this big glass house which happened to be the Weekend's
- 29:01Speaker 4: reel house, but in the movie we were shooting it
- 29:04Speaker 4: as if it was Joscelyn's house, so the light changed.
- 29:08Speaker 4: He even wants to make sure those scenes are shot
- 29:09Speaker 4: in a certain type of lights, so we're going to
- 29:11Speaker 4: switch to these other scenes.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Okay, that's a very filmic reason. Yeah, all right, So
- 29:16Speaker 2: I learned those three scenes over the next two hours, and.
- 29:19Speaker 4: Then they change it again. Oh, like, no, we're not
- 29:23Speaker 4: going to do those today. And it turned out that
- 29:26Speaker 4: based on how the morning's work had went, they decided
- 29:30Speaker 4: they needed another scene where they were already shooting.
- 29:34Speaker 2: So they decided to go stay there.
- 29:37Speaker 4: All this is very on the run, and you know,
- 29:43Speaker 4: here's the equivalent. It'd be like a really great in
- 29:46Speaker 4: game coach making adjustments.
- 29:48Speaker 1: This is what I see and is what we need
- 29:49Speaker 1: for the better of the team right now. Yeah that
- 29:51Speaker 1: we prepared all week, we did our game plan, but
- 29:54Speaker 1: in this moment, this is the adjustment.
- 29:55Speaker 4: Yeah, but this is what we're doing today because this
- 29:57Speaker 4: is what it feels like it needs.
- 29:58Speaker 2: And I think I actually called the first ad.
- 30:00Speaker 4: The poor guy who was in charge of raging, so
- 30:02Speaker 4: I think I actually called him a young man.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Or young man, what is this? What are we doing
- 30:10Speaker 2: here today?
- 30:11Speaker 4: And he's like, yeah, no, often there's audibles that are called.
- 30:16Speaker 4: And so after about two days of this, I said, Okay,
- 30:19Speaker 4: do me a favor. Just give me the ten or
- 30:22Speaker 4: twelve scenes that are in play all right, that you
- 30:25Speaker 4: think we will do, because I'm sure you can limit
- 30:27Speaker 4: it loss I could prepare, yeah, exactly, so at least
- 30:30Speaker 4: in others a playbook like I'll stick. I'll have a
- 30:33Speaker 4: wide playbook and then you guys tell me what we're
- 30:35Speaker 4: doing and I'll be able to adjust, no problem. And
- 30:38Speaker 4: then not only that, but so he would kind of
- 30:42Speaker 4: go with the creative hot hand, if.
- 30:44Speaker 2: You will love this.
- 30:46Speaker 4: Not only that, but then once we started the scene,
- 30:49Speaker 4: he would start changing it based on what we were doing,
- 30:52Speaker 4: how things were working. We would he goes, do my favorite,
- 30:54Speaker 4: just improvise the scene, forget about the dialogue, and we
- 30:56Speaker 4: would do that, or we would do the scene and
- 30:58Speaker 4: then we'd improvide the next ten minutes what might follow
- 31:01Speaker 4: the scene. So he started combining a sort of more
- 31:04Speaker 4: jud Appatow, you know, Larry David approach.
- 31:08Speaker 1: I was gonna say, like, it's going to bring up
- 31:10Speaker 1: curb where they say, here's the here's what happens, but
- 31:13Speaker 1: the dialogue, go ahead and just let it rip, right?
- 31:16Speaker 1: Is that? Is that how this was?
- 31:18Speaker 4: But it was it was more like a legendary filmmaker
- 31:21Speaker 4: Robert Altman, and that it wasn't so much to try
- 31:23Speaker 4: to be funny sometimes it won't, but it was more
- 31:25Speaker 4: to try to get more emotionally real, like a filmmaker
- 31:28Speaker 4: named Mike Lee works. This way took where you know,
- 31:31Speaker 4: you get to the more raw emotion of certain things
- 31:34Speaker 4: if you just kind of let it fly and don't
- 31:36Speaker 4: let words constrain you. And a lot of it wasn't
- 31:40Speaker 4: h He had a ton of materials, so they had
- 31:43Speaker 4: to edit a lot.
- 31:45Speaker 2: In the end.
- 31:45Speaker 4: But I'd say half the performance of my own half,
- 31:49Speaker 4: a scripted half, was the stuff we came up with
- 31:52Speaker 4: in the moment or on the day.
- 31:53Speaker 1: You know the Apatow reference. Now he says, we'll do
- 31:57Speaker 1: fifty takes this. We don't know what the final version is.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Going to be and then whatever felt right for Judd
- 32:02Speaker 1: in the edit is what ends up in the final.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Would you guys be doing like twenty ten of this
- 32:06Speaker 1: or would be like Clint Eastwood one take or Woody
- 32:09Speaker 1: Allen one take. That's good, let's move.
- 32:10Speaker 4: More more like it was neither, because that's also the
- 32:13Speaker 4: twenty takes starts to crush your soul so much. One
- 32:16Speaker 4: take is not enough. It was more like just extended,
- 32:19Speaker 4: like Judtle, let the camera run. I have a work
- 32:21Speaker 4: which I love to I did a movie that he
- 32:23Speaker 4: produced that was short of Sun in a fimilar way,
- 32:25Speaker 4: but it was more like extended. We never really heard cut.
- 32:30Speaker 4: We just would kind of keep going and then sometimes
- 32:33Speaker 4: you know, it was like a true good coach like
- 32:37Speaker 4: Lily and I. A lot of our scenes were exactly
- 32:40Speaker 4: is written, you know what I mean. We just it
- 32:42Speaker 4: was written, well, it seemed to work. We got it
- 32:45Speaker 4: fast bang.
- 32:46Speaker 2: You know.
- 32:46Speaker 4: Some others seat there were a lot of actual music
- 32:48Speaker 4: industry people in this, so for them acting wasn't.
- 32:52Speaker 1: It's more accuracy and consulting.
- 32:55Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, So Sam would say, well, I don't worry
- 32:58Speaker 4: about the words, just say what you really say. There, cool,
- 33:01Speaker 4: I forget even about the script, just what would you
- 33:02Speaker 4: really do in this circumstance. And so the professional actors
- 33:06Speaker 4: on the set, not that they weren't pros, but you
- 33:09Speaker 4: know what I mean, the more experienced actors would have
- 33:11Speaker 4: to sort of roll with whatever they were doing. So
- 33:14Speaker 4: I loved it on that from that standpoint, not to
- 33:17Speaker 4: mention Peter, but then after a while, cumulatively another sports analogy, right,
- 33:22Speaker 4: So great coaches they take their actual player, they chuck
- 33:26Speaker 4: their game plan after a while and go with the
- 33:28Speaker 4: strengths of their players. And that's what Sam started doing
- 33:31Speaker 4: a lot too. It's like you seem I started playing
- 33:34Speaker 4: it a different way than he expected, so he started
- 33:37Speaker 4: writing to that that's changing things, you know, And he
- 33:40Speaker 4: did that for everybody's character, even the Weekend. I don't
- 33:44Speaker 4: want to give away too much, but yeah, the original
- 33:47Speaker 4: vision for the thing, it turned into something else given
- 33:50Speaker 4: on how the Weekend was doing with it, and very profoundly,
- 33:54Speaker 4: you know. So it was really fun and creative. I
- 33:57Speaker 4: hadn't worked that way on a set that creative since
- 34:00Speaker 4: I worked with Mike Nichols, you know, on the p Yeah.
- 34:03Speaker 1: How's the reception been so far? And have you been
- 34:06Speaker 1: happy with what you've heard from people who've watched the
- 34:09Speaker 1: episode so far.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Well, we had a lot of negative press leading up.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Because because of this, because of what the way it
- 34:14Speaker 1: was made or what the topic.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Well there was there was an article Rolling Stone that
- 34:19Speaker 4: what I described accurately just now as the creative nature
- 34:23Speaker 4: of that set, you know, got called chaotic and dysfunctional.
- 34:26Speaker 4: And I made a point at the press conference and
- 34:28Speaker 4: ken of saying no, no, no, I've been on sets
- 34:31Speaker 4: that were chaotic and dysfunctional.
- 34:33Speaker 2: It wasn't that, been on bad teams.
- 34:34Speaker 4: Okay, this wasn't that, And it was the opposite of that,
- 34:40Speaker 4: this sexual you know, gratefully for everyone involved, I'm not.
- 34:43Speaker 4: I wasn't involved in the sexual shenanigans in the show.
- 34:47Speaker 4: That's for the young folks. So I can't really to
- 34:50Speaker 4: speak to it. I just know that Lily was very,
- 34:52Speaker 4: very comfortable with everything she had to do, felt very
- 34:55Speaker 4: collaborated with as I did on anything I was doing.
- 34:59Speaker 4: And Sam's work is very much that way. You know,
- 35:02Speaker 4: Euphoria really pushes it. So does this mean it might
- 35:06Speaker 4: not be everybody's cup of tea? I get that, but
- 35:08Speaker 4: I don't think you can deny the filmmaking and the
- 35:11Speaker 4: compelling story and the great characters and stuff.
- 35:14Speaker 1: I haven't seen Euphoria, which makes it sound like I'm
- 35:16Speaker 1: talking out of my you know what, but it's it's
- 35:19Speaker 1: the most streamed show I think HBO has ever had,
- 35:21Speaker 1: and it's also one of the rare shows that has,
- 35:24Speaker 1: you know, attracted the younger audience where they're not just
- 35:27Speaker 1: watching YouTube clips all day. They actually watched this show.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Love this show, And what might not be digestible for
- 35:33Speaker 1: a certain generation might be something that is actually being
- 35:36Speaker 1: craved and not satisfied in entertainment, And this is what
- 35:38Speaker 1: might be he be writing. You know, it's a different
- 35:40Speaker 1: audience necessarily than what the same audience has been watching
- 35:43Speaker 1: TV for sixty years.
- 35:44Speaker 2: That's exactly right here.
- 35:45Speaker 4: I've talked to Sam at length about this because I
- 35:48Speaker 4: got kind of morbidly fascinated with Euphoria after the fact,
- 35:51Speaker 4: and I watched it, and sure enough, especially the first
- 35:54Speaker 4: two episodes. As a parent, it's like, they're great, but
- 35:58Speaker 4: they're great the way watching a horror.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Movie is great.
- 36:00Speaker 4: You're like, oh my god, what am I seeing? It's
- 36:04Speaker 4: terrifying but very compelling, and then it settles in. It's
- 36:08Speaker 4: just really good storytelling and filmmaking, and it's very good.
- 36:11Speaker 4: And then I'm like, well, what am I really going
- 36:14Speaker 4: to care about? Ostensibly a teen drama, you know, those
- 36:17Speaker 4: days are way gone for me, but they totally translated.
- 36:20Speaker 4: The characters are so good. The story of Zendaiah's journey
- 36:23Speaker 4: into sobriety is the most realistic depiction of that I've
- 36:26Speaker 4: ever seen. It's amazing. It's just gripping. And you know,
- 36:30Speaker 4: Sam said, he purposely he's young. He's not a teenager,
- 36:36Speaker 4: but he's a young guy himself. He was hyper aware
- 36:38Speaker 4: that his audience, as you just said, as you see
- 36:41Speaker 4: a YouTube clip is like a feature.
- 36:43Speaker 1: Film to that's all.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Yeah, So he was like, I can't.
- 36:47Speaker 4: He purposely designed it so as not to let young
- 36:50Speaker 4: attention spans waiver, things like no establishing shots. Kids shut
- 36:55Speaker 4: down and start looking at their phone if you show an.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Establishing shot, it's interesting.
- 37:00Speaker 4: He was hyper aware of as few cuts as possible
- 37:05Speaker 4: and as not letting the attention span go away, and
- 37:10Speaker 4: he designed it that way and it apparently worked.
- 37:18Speaker 1: You've been in so many great films, so many shows,
- 37:21Speaker 1: and yet I think everyone has a different entry point
- 37:23Speaker 1: for Hankaus area. So I ask you, you know, we
- 37:26Speaker 1: live in New York where it's not everyone stopping you
- 37:28Speaker 1: on the street every two seconds. But when you do
- 37:30Speaker 1: get stopped, is it a Simpson's voice? Is it friends?
- 37:34Speaker 1: Is it birdcage? Is it another felt?
- 37:37Speaker 3: Like?
- 37:37Speaker 1: What do you feel like? Is the thing that you're
- 37:38Speaker 1: getting the most these days? As far as a Brockmeyer like,
- 37:41Speaker 1: what is it that people are stopping you and saying, hey,
- 37:43Speaker 1: love your work in X something?
- 37:45Speaker 2: It depends on where I am.
- 37:46Speaker 4: I can sort of tell by the demographic of the
- 37:50Speaker 4: person what they're likely to. If I'm at the Mets game,
- 37:54Speaker 4: I'm gonna hear a lot of brockmrk. You know, most
- 37:58Speaker 4: of all it's bird cage. Okay, Young folks are very
- 38:02Speaker 4: friends obsessed.
- 38:05Speaker 1: You're not interesting. It's how this second life of like
- 38:08Speaker 1: a number one show.
- 38:09Speaker 4: You're right, every eleven year old discovers friends, you know,
- 38:14Speaker 4: since the show's been on, So I get a lot
- 38:16Speaker 4: of that, And a lot of folks from foreign countries
- 38:21Speaker 4: are friends.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Obsessed as well.
- 38:22Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 38:23Speaker 4: But I get, you know, i'd say probably the most
- 38:25Speaker 4: of Burke And then I've been around so long now
- 38:27Speaker 4: that I really never know, I get weird, like really
- 38:30Speaker 4: you like Herman's head.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Okay, let Herbert said Fox.
- 38:33Speaker 4: Let's go early days of Fox. You know, so I
- 38:36Speaker 4: never totally know you. Know what I get more than
- 38:39Speaker 4: anything else, Peter is people know me, but they don't
- 38:41Speaker 4: know from where. Oh?
- 38:43Speaker 1: Is that the worst though? Why do I know you?
- 38:45Speaker 1: Is that the worst question? In an airport? I get
- 38:47Speaker 1: people coming. Why do I know you?
- 38:49Speaker 2: I have very good pat answers for it.
- 38:51Speaker 1: What do you say?
- 38:52Speaker 2: I get a lot of you. I know you're an actor.
- 38:54Speaker 4: I don't know your name, so I think, well, I'm
- 38:59Speaker 4: George Clooney.
- 39:00Speaker 2: I just look really ugly in person.
- 39:05Speaker 1: I was reading you know, I do my research before
- 39:08Speaker 1: any of these things. But I'm fascinated with like your
- 39:10Speaker 1: career because it's got such a depth in so many
- 39:12Speaker 1: different roles. Before Simpsons, I mean, there was was it Hollywood?
- 39:17Speaker 5: Dog?
- 39:18Speaker 1: Was the show? What was the show?
- 39:19Speaker 2: You are good?
- 39:21Speaker 1: Tell me, tell me what your entry points to the
- 39:23Speaker 1: Simpsons was? And whatever happened to that show?
- 39:25Speaker 2: Well that never even made it to air?
- 39:27Speaker 1: So what was it?
- 39:29Speaker 2: Early days of Fox?
- 39:30Speaker 4: As you said, remember the show the movie Who Framed
- 39:33Speaker 4: Roger Rabbit?
- 39:34Speaker 1: Yes, Bob Hoskins.
- 39:36Speaker 4: Bob Hoskins and Zamacus so animated rabbit live action people
- 39:43Speaker 4: that got popular. Fox decided to try one of those.
- 39:47Speaker 4: They did a pilot of a show called Hollywood Dog,
- 39:50Speaker 4: based on a comic strip this Popper at the time.
- 39:53Speaker 1: It was called Hollywood Dog and it would be like
- 39:54Speaker 1: in your Sunday paper.
- 39:55Speaker 2: Okay, I guess I did the voice of the dog White.
- 40:01Speaker 2: They talk like this, Hey doing this Hollywood Dog.
- 40:05Speaker 1: I love already Hollywood Dog.
- 40:07Speaker 4: And that back then, back in the old days, Peter,
- 40:13Speaker 4: they made every network, even.
- 40:15Speaker 2: Fox, made like one hundred.
- 40:17Speaker 1: Pilots and they picked pilot seasoned.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Yes, so everybody worked pilots.
- 40:22Speaker 4: Everyone loved pilot season because almost every actor worked, but
- 40:26Speaker 4: only ten or fifteen of them made it to air
- 40:28Speaker 4: out of like fifty to eighty they made. Hollywood Dog
- 40:32Speaker 4: was one of them. So not long after that, I
- 40:34Speaker 4: got a call from head of casting The Simpsons, a
- 40:37Speaker 4: woman named Bonnie Pietila, who worked on the show for
- 40:40Speaker 4: years but has stopped and knew me from that just
- 40:45Speaker 4: through Fox, and it was like almost an open calls,
- 40:48Speaker 4: an open call, but I didn't have a voiceover agent.
- 40:51Speaker 2: It just came through my regular agent.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Wow, And I.
- 40:55Speaker 4: Walked over one day to Fox and Sam Simon and MATC.
- 41:00Speaker 4: Graining were in the room and Sam has passed away since,
- 41:04Speaker 4: but he and Matt and Jim Brooks with the original creators.
- 41:08Speaker 4: And I was doing to play in Hollywood at the time.
- 41:12Speaker 4: I was playing a drug dealer in this play, and
- 41:14Speaker 4: I was doing an impression, a vocal impression of Pacino
- 41:17Speaker 4: from Dog Day Afternoon in that place.
- 41:20Speaker 2: So I was sort of talking like this, that's sort
- 41:22Speaker 2: of an early Alpatuna.
- 41:24Speaker 4: I hear MO already, Well, yeah it, so I do that,
- 41:29Speaker 4: and they were like, well, we wanted to be gravelly,
- 41:32Speaker 4: so you take young al Pacino and you make it
- 41:35Speaker 4: gravity and you get motor bought. And they said, great,
- 41:40Speaker 4: can you come record this. I'm like, now, I never
- 41:44Speaker 4: had that appenue, Like you get the job in the
- 41:46Speaker 4: room and then.
- 41:46Speaker 2: You do it.
- 41:48Speaker 4: I realized now they probably they probably had like eight
- 41:51Speaker 4: guys do that that day, and then they just kept
- 41:53Speaker 4: the one they liked. So even when I thought I
- 41:55Speaker 4: had the job, I probably didn't. But I guess they
- 41:58Speaker 4: liked what I did. And then each week I'd come
- 42:00Speaker 4: back and do another voice or to had like wig
- 42:02Speaker 4: them the next week, and on and on.
- 42:05Speaker 2: And after about a year that they made me regular.
- 42:08Speaker 4: You know what I found out years later here, how
- 42:10Speaker 4: about this for craziness?
- 42:12Speaker 2: So apparently.
- 42:14Speaker 4: There was an original mode the bar They were replacement
- 42:17Speaker 4: casting at that point they had had a mod the bartender,
- 42:21Speaker 4: And then I was like, oh wow, really. And then
- 42:24Speaker 4: years after I found that out, I think Matt Groening
- 42:26Speaker 4: and I were doing some like we were being judges
- 42:29Speaker 4: on some Food Network food show, right.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Okay, chopped one of these things and one of those.
- 42:36Speaker 4: Not it wasn't chopped, but it was. I said, you know, Matt,
- 42:40Speaker 4: why did you fire that? What didn't you like about
- 42:45Speaker 4: the voice work of that original Mo? And he said, oh,
- 42:49Speaker 4: we thought he was great. We liked him a lot.
- 42:52Speaker 4: So well, then what did you fire him for?
- 42:55Speaker 2: He said? The guy was just kind of a jerk.
- 42:58Speaker 1: Just what a lesson? Right?
- 43:00Speaker 2: Oh my god? So the guy, the poor guy, he's
- 43:03Speaker 2: since passed away.
- 43:04Speaker 1: I think, can you imagine the rest of his life?
- 43:06Speaker 2: Well, that's to me.
- 43:07Speaker 4: The guy was like the peak best of the Simpsons,
- 43:09Speaker 4: you know what I mean. And it's like, dude, don't
- 43:12Speaker 4: that's terrior. I felt really bad, actually yeah, And.
- 43:15Speaker 1: He was probably in his twenties, young guy like you
- 43:17Speaker 1: know and live with that the rest of his life.
- 43:20Speaker 1: That's heartbreaking.
- 43:20Speaker 4: He was a really established voiceover guy and Jim Brooks
- 43:25Speaker 4: talk about takes in the early days of The Simpsons
- 43:28Speaker 4: and Jim Brooks of everything he does, he.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Likes to do take after take.
- 43:32Speaker 4: He really tried to get it right and I think
- 43:35Speaker 4: the guy didn't like it and sort of snapped at
- 43:37Speaker 4: them all one day.
- 43:39Speaker 1: When I was a kid. And I'm not trying to
- 43:40Speaker 1: date you, obviously, you know Simpsons been going on for
- 43:43Speaker 1: five not even years old, but it's just Simpsons. I'm
- 43:46Speaker 1: certainly not dating you. If I say I grew up
- 43:47Speaker 1: watching the Simpsons. I think everyone grew up watching the Simpsons.
- 43:50Speaker 1: But I remember like being a craze, like I mean,
- 43:53Speaker 1: I know now you could say, oh well, no, this
- 43:55Speaker 1: is bigger now or American Idol was a bigger craze
- 43:57Speaker 1: in the two thousand, but like every kid had the
- 43:59Speaker 1: T shirt, I wasn't allowed to wear the T shirt
- 44:01Speaker 1: in school. It was banned to have Bart Simpsons in school.
- 44:03Speaker 2: Can you believe at the time when Bart Simpson was
- 44:05Speaker 2: considered edge?
- 44:06Speaker 1: You think about that now because it's you know why,
- 44:09Speaker 1: because I said, eat my shorts me you can't can't
- 44:12Speaker 1: have it, you know, cawipunk, you can't have it? Did
- 44:16Speaker 1: you guys feel it like it was the biggest? It
- 44:19Speaker 1: was on the cover I think Bart Simson's on the
- 44:20Speaker 1: cover of Time in Newsweek at the same time, like
- 44:22Speaker 1: a Springsteen like celebrity. But like, did you feel that
- 44:25Speaker 1: when you were recording those first episodes that this thing
- 44:28Speaker 1: could be what it forget what it's become. But that
- 44:30Speaker 1: first year, what a sensation it was?
- 44:33Speaker 4: Yes, and no knowing that Fox itself was two years old.
- 44:38Speaker 1: What was it? Mara Children, you guys, Horman's head, Tracy Almond,
- 44:43Speaker 1: and a few other things.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Cops Cops for sure, Cops.
- 44:47Speaker 4: Was a huge hit for them, and that was the first,
- 44:52Speaker 4: you know, new network. It was ABC, CBS, at NBC
- 44:55Speaker 4: and PBS and whatever couple of local channels you had,
- 44:59Speaker 4: and that was it. Children, that was it, and so
- 45:04Speaker 4: a new network. You were like, you kidding that it's
- 45:06Speaker 4: not going to last. So you didn't even know if
- 45:09Speaker 4: the network was going to survive, let alone an animated
- 45:12Speaker 4: primetime show on the network. I mean that said James L.
- 45:16Speaker 4: Brooks at that point was a legend, a legend deservedly
- 45:20Speaker 4: so I mean, the guy was arguably the greatest. I mean,
- 45:24Speaker 4: I don't know if anybody before or since it's at
- 45:27Speaker 4: that kind of success in TV and film at the
- 45:30Speaker 4: same time, you know, winning Emmys and Oscars at the
- 45:32Speaker 4: same time, and doing it himself like the real deal,
- 45:35Speaker 4: writing it all and.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Creating it all.
- 45:39Speaker 4: And so the fact that Jim Brooks was standing there,
- 45:43Speaker 4: to my twenty two year old self, it is how
- 45:45Speaker 4: old what I started doing.
- 45:46Speaker 1: Is twenty two? Really?
- 45:47Speaker 4: Yeah, my first of us was impressive, and you know,
- 45:52Speaker 4: back then, I take it for granted. Now now again,
- 45:54Speaker 4: I don't you know, my finger is hardly on the
- 45:57Speaker 4: pulse beat of pop culture and comedy anymore. But then
- 46:00Speaker 4: it was without my even realizing it. There was less
- 46:03Speaker 4: to track back then. But I had a strong sense,
- 46:08Speaker 4: just from a youthful comedic standpoint, that this thing was
- 46:13Speaker 4: pretty special.
- 46:14Speaker 2: And then I remember it was an LA Film.
- 46:17Speaker 4: Festival and they showed the shorts of The Simpsons in it,
- 46:20Speaker 4: and the audience went crazy, really crazy.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Before even they were in the Tracy Almonds show. They
- 46:25Speaker 1: were showing them at this festival.
- 46:26Speaker 4: They were cold from the Tracy alemend shows. Before we
- 46:29Speaker 4: premiered as a half hour.
- 46:30Speaker 1: Show and the audience went nuts.
- 46:33Speaker 4: Yeah, my peers, my, it just struck a chord with
- 46:37Speaker 4: us youngsters.
- 46:38Speaker 2: I don't know exactly why.
- 46:40Speaker 1: I mean, my friend, I mean, we were in I
- 46:42Speaker 1: guess middle school. We would I mean, and then they
- 46:44Speaker 1: would air in syndication. We would memorize lines. You could
- 46:48Speaker 1: put on a Simpsons episode. For the first ten seasons,
- 46:50Speaker 1: I could tell you every line of every episode, and
- 46:52Speaker 1: that was kind of the norm.
- 46:53Speaker 4: That's what we did, you know, Yes, and I had equivalent.
- 46:58Speaker 4: You know, I grew up worshiping Bugs, Bunny and all
- 47:00Speaker 4: the Warner Brothers cartoons, and then you know, there were
- 47:04Speaker 4: certain shows that meant everything to me. You know, I
- 47:08Speaker 4: was like Happy Days and yeah, all in the Family
- 47:11Speaker 4: early Days, that Jim but you know, Mary Tyler Moore
- 47:14Speaker 4: and even to my early twenty like I grew up
- 47:16Speaker 4: as a teen on family Ties. So I know, I
- 47:20Speaker 4: do know well what it's like to have a show
- 47:22Speaker 4: mean a lot. And I'm thrilled that, you know, both
- 47:26Speaker 4: from an animation standpoint and just an iconic standpoint, that
- 47:30Speaker 4: to pass, to be able to be a part of
- 47:32Speaker 4: passing that traditional law awesome.
- 47:34Speaker 1: We're going to wrap it here as we record on
- 47:37Speaker 1: this June day, If I ask you in six months,
- 47:41Speaker 1: what's the ideal situation for your New York Jets as
- 47:43Speaker 1: we close, paint the picture for me here it's a
- 47:46Speaker 1: winter day, you got your fourteen year old son. Are
- 47:48Speaker 1: we headed towards a playoff game? Or what? What are
- 47:51Speaker 1: we thinking?
- 47:51Speaker 2: Is?
- 47:51Speaker 1: Actually, you know what would you be happy with if
- 47:54Speaker 1: you could sign up for it right now?
- 47:55Speaker 4: Well, I mean the ceiling is an obvious answer, but
- 47:59Speaker 4: I mean I saw the Interesting World Today article today
- 48:03Speaker 4: Peter that the projections are like all over the board, all.
- 48:07Speaker 1: Over the sportsbooks, have no consistency and like everywhere from
- 48:11Speaker 1: eight wins to fourteen wins.
- 48:13Speaker 2: I even see I saw a four win projection.
- 48:18Speaker 4: They seem to be averaging out at like eight point
- 48:20Speaker 4: six or something.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Weird like about what they did last year? Was Zach
- 48:23Speaker 1: Wilson and.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Stribler, Yeah right that.
- 48:27Speaker 4: I think I even heard you talking about how much
- 48:30Speaker 4: a defense can fluctuate year to year. And their schedule
- 48:35Speaker 4: is a lot harder this year it was last.
- 48:37Speaker 1: AFC is loaded, But in a way you look.
- 48:39Speaker 4: At it like they're going to have to beat those
- 48:41Speaker 4: teams if they're gonna win.
- 48:43Speaker 2: So let's let's find out. To me, honestly, like I'll.
- 48:49Speaker 4: I answer this from a Brett Favre perspective, Okay, guy came,
- 48:53Speaker 4: we were all excited in a similar.
- 48:54Speaker 2: Fashion, he went eight and three.
- 48:57Speaker 4: Yep, hurt his freaking shoulder, and they lost the rest
- 49:01Speaker 4: of the games except for one, and they missed the playoffs.
- 49:04Speaker 2: The next year, he took the freaking Vikings to the
- 49:07Speaker 2: NF Championship.
- 49:09Speaker 1: A couple plays away from the super Bowl.
- 49:11Speaker 4: And because obviously he just wanted to do that, I mean,
- 49:16Speaker 4: it's hard not to think about what if he just
- 49:18Speaker 4: stayed a Jet for that second year. So to me, honestly,
- 49:22Speaker 4: especially because I'm being Jets men's knicks, I'm so I
- 49:26Speaker 4: have such PTSD that if the team just really plays
- 49:29Speaker 4: well and his competitive, I think if they don't make
- 49:32Speaker 4: the playoffs.
- 49:33Speaker 2: I'll be genuinely disappointed disappointed.
- 49:35Speaker 4: But if they're really competitive and make any version.
- 49:40Speaker 2: Of a run, I'll be very very happy.
- 49:42Speaker 4: And if it looks like Aaron would come back one
- 49:44Speaker 4: more year and try it again, I'd be thrilled with that.
- 49:47Speaker 2: But I don't, I don't dare hope beyond.
- 49:52Speaker 1: I love it. You're your two season as a fan
- 49:55Speaker 1: to to start, you know, planning a parade down Broadway
- 49:57Speaker 1: and yeah, so many art.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Well you imagine it.
- 50:01Speaker 4: You can't mean the next beat when the next beat
- 50:04Speaker 4: the Cavaliers. I just could not help him imagining, I know,
- 50:08Speaker 4: a Knicks Lakers final, like.
- 50:10Speaker 1: A nationally televised Eastern Conference final. I forget that. I
- 50:13Speaker 1: was in the same bat, you know, obviously, and it's like, wow,
- 50:16Speaker 1: what if we're hosting at the garden like the Eastern
- 50:18Speaker 1: Conference final? Like what? Like it's insane.
- 50:20Speaker 2: I know, I know, I know, I know.
- 50:23Speaker 1: You're a good man. Thanks for going along here, appreciate it.
- 50:26Speaker 1: You're in the idol on HBO. I've got this. I
- 50:29Speaker 1: feel so ridiculous. I've got my home set up if
- 50:31Speaker 1: you're listening on audio, and my one loan sports Emmy
- 50:34Speaker 1: is behind me. I'm talking to Hank, who's probably got
- 50:36Speaker 1: six hundred and he doesn't have any behind me.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Came up here there.
- 50:44Speaker 1: Bobbleheads and Emmy looks so good. I felt cycle like
- 50:48Speaker 1: such a loser. I've got one.
- 50:51Speaker 4: Like it's a nice it's a nice starter at me, Peter,
- 50:54Speaker 4: it's a nice starter at me.
- 50:55Speaker 1: We'll get there. Uh, Hank is area such a fan
- 50:58Speaker 1: of yours from TV and also I also think you're
- 51:00Speaker 1: the best guest on Eisen, you're the best guest on
- 51:01Speaker 1: Dan Lebuttar, and I think you're a tremendous voice in
- 51:04Speaker 1: the sports media world too.
- 51:05Speaker 2: Jim Bradmeyer has you the checks he's been. I've been
- 51:10Speaker 2: back the last couple of weeks.
- 51:11Speaker 4: Okay, so not the normal podcast, but I do a
- 51:14Speaker 4: segment of Dan pretty much every week, usually on Thursdays.
- 51:17Speaker 1: So good. You're great with those guys, Henk, thanks so
- 51:20Speaker 1: much for joining this podcast. Thanks Peter Aaron. How good
- 51:23Speaker 1: was Hanka's area?
- 51:24Speaker 3: Hearing him do the voices?
- 51:26Speaker 4: Like?
- 51:26Speaker 3: While we were it was.
- 51:29Speaker 1: I didn't know how far to go with that. I
- 51:31Speaker 1: was tempted to be like, all right, do Wigham do
- 51:36Speaker 1: Gigham calling a play? Do Wigam commented, And then I'm like,
- 51:39Speaker 1: all right, he's not a circus clown.
- 51:41Speaker 2: You know.
- 51:42Speaker 1: I haven't seen the idol. I kind of want to
- 51:44Speaker 1: see it now. I haven't seen you for you though.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Do you watch you for it?
- 51:47Speaker 3: I don't you know. I maybe we should for some reason,
- 51:51Speaker 3: I'm not up on all the HBO shows.
- 51:53Speaker 1: Okay, everyone says it's incredibly uncomfortable and unsettling, but like
- 51:57Speaker 1: awesome TV. I don't know if I need uncomfortable and
- 51:59Speaker 1: unsettling him.
- 52:00Speaker 3: I did love him talking about like it's catered to
- 52:03Speaker 3: the younger audience, so there is no establishing shots there.
- 52:06Speaker 1: Yeah, no theme song.
- 52:08Speaker 3: It just go it keeps you in there. Yeah, So
- 52:11Speaker 3: I think that's fascinating. I haven't seen it diehard.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Jets Mets Knicks. That's a tortured trio right there.
- 52:19Speaker 3: I mean, at least it's Knicks, not Nets, right, I mean,
- 52:22Speaker 3: Jets Mets Nets would be harder. I mean that doesn't fit.
- 52:25Speaker 1: I guess. You know, with Jets and Mets are typically
- 52:28Speaker 1: if you're like not from New York, that's there's like
- 52:30Speaker 1: a queen side of that where it's one was in
- 52:33Speaker 1: They both played in Shay Stadium, and they both were
- 52:35Speaker 1: like kind of created at the same time in the sixties.
- 52:37Speaker 1: And if you weren't a traditional Giants and Yankees fan
- 52:41Speaker 1: who have been around for much longer, you're like, this
- 52:43Speaker 1: are my teams. These are new, they're fun, and yet
- 52:45Speaker 1: they have the same tortured history. Of course, they both
- 52:47Speaker 1: won championships. You know, the Mets have won in eighty
- 52:50Speaker 1: six and sixty nine, the Jets won in sixty eight,
- 52:54Speaker 1: but gosh, it's been a long long time, and Hank
- 52:58Speaker 1: lives it, and I have so many friends who have
- 53:00Speaker 1: that combo of Nicks, Jets, Mets, and it's just a
- 53:04Speaker 1: miserable existence when it comes to post postseason success of
- 53:08Speaker 1: the last thirty years.
- 53:09Speaker 3: And I feel like they haven't. I don't know baseball
- 53:11Speaker 3: well enough, but Jets at least that lot of excitement
- 53:14Speaker 3: last season, but not nothing that compares quite to like
- 53:19Speaker 3: bing Bong for the Knicks, like the Jets the Knicks.
- 53:22Speaker 1: That's so the Knicks was such a sensation and that's
- 53:25Speaker 1: one playoff game, the bing bong thing. All right, I
- 53:28Speaker 1: love this episode. I hope you're listening at home. We're
- 53:30Speaker 1: going to try to keep on bringing on good entertainment
- 53:33Speaker 1: style guests and then we're going to sprinkle in some
- 53:36Speaker 1: coaches and some gms over the next few weeks. But
- 53:37Speaker 1: the podcast will be rocking and rolling on. Behalf of
- 53:41Speaker 1: the great Aaron Wang Kaufman on, behalf of my dear
- 53:44Speaker 1: buddy Jason English at iHeart on, behalf of all the
- 53:48Speaker 1: crew in LA who worked for NFL Network and helped
- 53:51Speaker 1: put this together. The Jason Kleman and Matt Schneider and
- 53:55Speaker 1: Meredith Batton and David Juranka and that crew and then
- 53:59Speaker 1: on behalf of the Awesome guests. Hank Kazaria brought it.
- 54:04Speaker 1: He was tremendous. Last week, David Cross brought like, I
- 54:06Speaker 1: want to be different with this thing. Hopefully you're just
- 54:08Speaker 1: finding it or you're listening every week, but you'll see
- 54:11Speaker 1: it's a different kind of podcast than the other football podcast.
- 54:14Speaker 1: We're trying to be a little bit more broader and
- 54:17Speaker 1: show some different lanes and try to bring in some
- 54:20Speaker 1: entertainment guests who have a love for football and can
- 54:22Speaker 1: speak it. As Hank so eloquently did about the New
- 54:26Speaker 1: York Jets, and he's right. I think every Jets fan
- 54:29Speaker 1: is bracing themselves and trying not to get too far
- 54:32Speaker 1: in advance. But it's hard not to be optimistic.
- 54:35Speaker 3: I mean, I don't have optimism for the Jets personally.
- 54:39Speaker 1: You're a Bills fan, I hear you. No, all right
- 54:43Speaker 1: till next week, guys, this is this season with Peter Schrager.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Love doing it, and go support Children's Mercy Hospital in
- 54:50Speaker 1: Kansas City. Donate a dollar if you can. Amazing organization.
- 54:54Speaker 1: I'm still kind of relishing in all that we did
- 54:57Speaker 1: this week for that org and the big slick weekend
- 55:00Speaker 1: Till next week, guys, Thank you. The Season with Peter
- 55:19Speaker 1: Schrager is a production of the NFL and partnership with iHeartRadio.
