- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo, episode 212. I'm Lucas, and as always, Luna is here with me. Luna: Hi everyone! I'm so excited for today's episode. We're going to a bookstore! Lucas: That's right. Today we're learning how to buy a book in Amharic. It's a perfect follow-up to our market and café episodes. Luna: I love bookstores. They're so quiet and peaceful. Let's dive in. Lucas: First, the most important word: book. In Amharic, it's መጽሐፍ. Let's say it together: መጽሐፍ. Luna: መጽሐፍ. That's a bit of a mouthful, but I'll get it. Lucas: You've got it. Now, if you want to say 'I need a book', you say መጽሐፍ እፈልጋለሁ. It's like saying 'book I-want'. Luna: መጽሐፍ እፈልጋለሁ. That reminds me of the café episode where we said ቡና እፈልጋለሁ for 'I want coffee'. Lucas: Exactly. You can use that pattern for many things. So, at the bookstore, you'd walk up to the clerk and say መጽሐፍ እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: And then they'd probably ask which one. How do we ask 'How much is this book?' Lucas: Great question. Breaking it down: ይህ means 'this', መጽሐፍ is 'book', ስንት is 'how much', and ነው is 'is'. I remember ስንት from asking prices at the market. That's helpful. Lucas: It is. Now, let's imagine you've picked up a book and you really like it. You could say መጽሐፉን እወዳለሁ, which means 'I like the book'. Luna: መጽሐፉን እወዳለሁ. That's a nice sentence. I like that one. Lucas: And finally, when you hand over the money and take your book, you say አመሰግናለሁ, which means 'thank you'. Luna: አመሰግናለሁ. That's a classic. We've used that in many episodes. Lucas: Let's put it all together in a little scene. You walk into a bookstore in Addis Ababa. You see a shelf of books. You go to the clerk and say መጽሐፍ እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: And the clerk shows you a few. You pick one up and ask Lucas: He tells you the price. You say መጽሐፉን እወዳለሁ and hand over the money. Then you say አመሰግናለሁ. Luna: That's such a smooth interaction. I feel ready for a bookstore now. Lucas: Let's do a quick review of all the phrases. Luna: Let me try them all: መጽሐፍ. Lucas: Perfect. You're a natural. Let's do one more repetition: ይህ መጽሐፍ ስንት ነው? Luna: ይህ መጽሐፍ ስንት ነው? Lucas: And መጽሐፉን እወዳለሁ. Luna: መጽሐፉን እወዳለሁ. Lucas: You know, it's interesting how much we've covered. From coffee to spices to now books. All these little conversations add up. Luna: It really does. And I love that we can now go to a bookstore and actually talk to someone in Amharic. Lucas: Absolutely. And this is why we do this every week. We want you to feel confident in real situations. Luna: Before we wrap up, I want to mention something. We have this podcast because of our listeners. A small group of them support us monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Lucas: Yeah, that's right. It's what keeps us ad-free and lets us keep making episodes like this one. If Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Amharic, that's a lovely way to say thanks. Luna: No pressure, but it does mean a lot. We're just two friends who love teaching this language. Lucas: Now, back to books. Can you imagine using ይህ መጽሐፍ ስንት ነው? in a real bookstore? Luna: Definitely. I'd be walking around asking that everywhere. Let's do one more round of all the phrases so we really remember them. Lucas: Good idea. Repeat after me: መጽሐፍ. Lucas: You did great today. Practice these and you'll be ready for any bookstore in Ethiopia. Luna: See you next time! Keep practicing everyone.
