- 1:58Hell yeah. So, Michelle, how are you?
- 2:03What's going on with you? Oh, you know, just.
- 2:06I'm just raw jogging it or getting raw jogged by life.
- 2:10Just. Yeah.
- 2:10I'm just happy to be back in Denver.
- 2:12It's been a nice week. Going home for a bit.
- 2:14Yeah. Did some shows.
- 2:15Did some shows. Yeah.
- 2:17Yeah. Super fun.
- 2:17Good. Yeah.
- 2:18Do you have any dates or anything coming up?
- 2:20This will probably come out in like a week or two.
- 2:24No, OK. It's great.
- 2:27Where can people find you on the Internet if you want them to
- 2:31find? You yeah, I I think well,
- 2:33sometimes I want to be seen. I want to be witnessed.
- 2:35It really depends Yeah. My Instagram is Meesh.
- 2:38Off leash. It's M EE SH.
- 2:41Even though that's not the short abbreviated version of how you
- 2:44spell Michelle. Don't worry about it.
- 2:46Don't think too much about it. I think the name originated when
- 2:50I was maybe drunk, like three blocks from here in high school.
- 2:54So yeah, nostalgia. It's good to be back, yeah.
- 3:00Well, today we are talking about the sweetest.
- 3:02Thing. Oh my God.
- 3:04Sweetest Thing Girl A completely underrated female driven,
- 3:11raunchy, R rated comedy written by Nancy Pimentel.
- 3:16I knew it. I knew it was a woman.
- 3:17I did. I knew a woman wrote it.
- 3:19Yeah, she is one of the writers on South Park.
- 3:23Fantastic. As you can tell, heavily
- 3:26influenced by that experience and heavily influenced by Monty
- 3:29Python style stuff, hence the musical elements of it.
- 3:37She actually wanted this to be campier and goofier, but I guess
- 3:40when she turned the script over to Roger Cumble, I think I'm
- 3:44pronouncing that right, who directed it?
- 3:48She felt like there was some stuff tonally that was lost that
- 3:54if she had been more involved in the directing process or if she
- 3:58had been there to kind of like, you know, be a more a part of
- 4:03the process of executing it, that it would have been even
- 4:07sillier. Oh my God, I love to hear that.
- 4:10The camp was what made it. And a talk about underrated.
- 4:15I mean, I don't want to throw you under the bus, Molly, but it
- 4:18wasn't even on your list. I know, isn't that so sad?
- 4:21And I was only reminded of it because a friend had just
- 4:23watched it this past weekend. She had never seen it.
- 4:25And she was like, what? What the hell?
- 4:29And we it's time for A reckoning.
- 4:32It's time. And I'm honored to be among
- 4:37those who are revisiting this film to say hell yeah, yeah, we
- 4:42got to bring it back. Iconic, iconic.
- 4:45So in 2002, when it came out, big flop.
- 4:49Big. Oh, yeah.
- 4:51Critics hated this movie. Hated.
- 4:54Hate, hate, hate. They said it's not good.
- 5:00They said I don't like it. Yeah, the Rotten Tomatoes score
- 5:05is like in the 20s. I did see that.
- 5:06I Yeah. I think that at the time they
- 5:10felt like it was just too gross, which of course they said that
- 5:17because it's girls. There's like a dream about
- 5:21getting eaten out. They're like, Oh my.
- 5:23God, this. Is.
- 5:25Eel And then they also said that they felt like the plot wasn't
- 5:29very strong, which I totally disagree.
- 5:31What? No, the it's such a romp.
- 5:34It's a romp. It's a buddy comedy.
- 5:36It's a buddy comedy. Like, yeah, the guy's barely in
- 5:40it. I know.
- 5:41It is sisterhood, it is womanhood, it is dancing in your
- 5:45heel. It is everything.
- 5:46Yeah, it's not. Even though there is ROM and
- 5:49there is calm, it's really not so much a ROM com as it is a
- 5:55tale of friendship. Yeah, it's, I mean, it's truly
- 5:59the Odyssey. It is a journey that is an art.
- 6:01Yeah, absolutely, Absolutely. Critics are idiots.
- 6:06I know. They're so stupid.
- 6:08So, Nancy Pimentel, if you're listening.
- 6:10And girl, I hope you. Are.
- 6:11Yeah, please. I want you to know that we loved
- 6:16the sweetest thing. We loved it.
- 6:18We understand that you were early in your career when you
- 6:21wrote this and you took a big swing.
- 6:23She was early in her career, Yeah.
- 6:25This was masterful though. I know.
- 6:27And and with that said, I don't mean to say like, oh, she was
- 6:30early in her career and therefore it wasn't good.
- 6:33I mean, she was early in her career and she said that she
- 6:36didn't yet understand, like, right?
- 6:39Like the leverage she could execute.
- 6:43And she was kind of just like, yeah, I didn't really know how
- 6:45to, like, translate the tone over to a director.
- 6:49But it but it still worked. Like that's what's crazy is that
- 6:53it could have been campier and sillier and it was already
- 6:56perfect. Honestly, yeah.
- 6:57Do you know what it was competing with that year?
- 7:01Yes, it was competing with God. What was the IT?
- 7:06It came out the same weekend as a couple of other movies that
- 7:09weren't crazy. But I'm going to I'm going to go
- 7:12ahead and look it up because because I just saw it yesterday.
- 7:18In the meantime, tell me, tell me more about your history with
- 7:22this movie. OK, so I, I used to see scenes
- 7:26of it on TBS or TNT, you know, whatever was like in constant
- 7:30rotation. I, I, I don't think I saw it
- 7:33when it came out. I think in my like late teens
- 7:36and 20s I would see pieces of it and I was like, this is fun.
- 7:41But I really, Oh my God, I, I missed out on it as well.
- 7:45Like I should have been way more enmeshed with it.
- 7:47Also, the versions of it that played on TNT and TBS were
- 7:51really cut. It cut and edited down.
- 7:55And then when I moved to San Francisco, which I actually
- 7:57moved to San Francisco because of the movie Homeward Bound,
- 8:02lost in San Francisco, so. So, so understandable.
- 8:07So, so movies really, yeah, they, they put me there and I
- 8:11saw a little bit of it because it's it's set there wonderfully.
- 8:15So I now realize in hindsight after living there for seven
- 8:18years, but I mean, I I remember liking it, but I never watched
- 8:23it all the way through, which is crazy until last night.
- 8:26And I was like, this is Canon. Like, I don't what?
- 8:32I don't know why we were watching Sex in the City.
- 8:34We should have been watching the sweetest thing.
- 8:36We should have. It was.
- 8:38Yeah, no, I it's the best thing I've ever seen.
- 8:41I will say I sorry, I'm like really overdoing it not.
- 8:45To be, not to be dramatic or any not to be.
- 8:47Dramatic like I've. Ever.
- 8:49It's the best art that's ever been made.
- 8:51I usually, you know this. I usually bring a lot of notes
- 8:55to these recordings because I am scrupulous about nostalgia.
- 8:59I get very litigious about it. I have been in Denver for a
- 9:03week. I have not worked one day since
- 9:05I have been here. And last night I kicked back.
- 9:08I poured a glass of wine and I put it on and I was like,
- 9:11finally a night off. Wow.
- 9:13A night off with the girls. Night off, they've all been
- 9:16nights off, but it just felt like that indulgent and
- 9:20culminating it. Was it phenomenal?
- 9:23Well, you have been working. You've been doing shows.
- 9:25Sure. Yeah.
- 9:26OK. OK.
- 9:27Thank you. Yeah, whatever it's worth.
- 9:29Yeah. But yeah, yeah.
- 9:30But not. But yeah, I.
- 9:32Hear Jacob laughing. He said I can laugh some.
- 9:37Of my am I allowed to break the force I was?
- 9:42Kidding. OK, yeah.
- 9:44So the the movies that came out, Sorry, yes.
- 9:48Yes, yes, back. Yeah, yeah, I was getting a
- 9:51little out of control. And it ranked behind changing
- 9:54lanes and panic room. OK, I so I'm not even gonna talk
- 10:02about it. I'm.
- 10:04Just so I have AI have a little poll quote from an article with
- 10:10the screenwriter. Would you like to hear?
- 10:11It I would love to. OK, so she said.
- 10:14Trey and Matt from South Park, was that outrageousness never
- 10:20like their influence? Was that the outrageousness
- 10:23never led the story? The story was the first moment.
- 10:25Every episode had to start with a story that had a beginning,
- 10:29middle and an end. It's out of the story and out of
- 10:32the characters and out of the situation.
- 10:34The big moments came. I like to think that I don't
- 10:37write for the sake of shock or being gratuitous, but the
- 10:40characters inform where the outrageousness wants to go in
- 10:43this day and age. I think if I were writing it
- 10:45today, this was in 2018, the characters would probably inform
- 10:49me of something bigger and more outrageous because our bar is so
- 10:53much higher and we are more desensitized.
- 10:56It's like a poem, honestly. I know honestly, they say, you
- 11:00know, Taylor Swift once said the greatest films of all time were
- 11:03never made. And and that's the first time
- 11:06I've ever quoted that woman on this podcast.
- 11:09I wondered, and it probably will be the last time.
- 11:12No offense, no offense, no offense, girl, but yeah.
- 11:17But I felt like someone had to say.
- 11:19It I mean. What this film could have been,
- 11:22and it was already. So good.
- 11:24The stakes were already so high. I mean, it just also just like
- 11:27the camaraderie, like the opening scene is them dancing
- 11:31and walking up the streets in San Francisco.
- 11:34She is wearing basically a bralette as a shirt.
- 11:37And we are to understand that she's coming from work.
- 11:40God love her. She's also wearing there's like,
- 11:44I mean, the fashion was so it was fantastic.
- 11:46Scarf. Work.
- 11:46Yeah, yes, the scarf she's wearing a camo scarf that has
- 11:51like a a like shredded flower on one side and then just like a
- 11:55long tail on the other kind. Of a rat tail, exactly.
- 11:58And, and it's camo mesh and I immediately was like, I'm in for
- 12:03this movie. Whatever happens, I'm I.
- 12:06Said I'm on her side no matter what I said.
- 12:08I'm rooting for her. I'm with her.
- 12:10So yeah, Cameron Diaz, Christina Ricci, Selma White, That's her.
- 12:16That's her name. Right.
- 12:17It's Selma, Christina and Christina Applegate.
- 12:20Did I say Christina Ricci? You did.
- 12:21But I love her, too. I mean, it's it's Casper season.
- 12:24You can't be blank for that. You know, we're all yeah.
- 12:27Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate and Selma Blair.
- 12:30Yeah. A dream team of women,
- 12:32absolutely. I love that Christina Applegate
- 12:36is just like a hot lawyer too. Like, that's great.
- 12:40These women, they have jobs, they have lives, they have
- 12:43friends, they have family, they have full personalities.
- 12:48Works. Yeah, and they have fun.
- 12:50Oh my God, do they ever have fun?
- 12:52Oh my God, they're just girlies having fun.
- 12:54Nancy Pimentel did say that her motivation to write this film,
- 12:58of course, was that there were no real representations of women
- 13:05in these types of movies and like these raunchy comedies
- 13:09really either at all. Or if they were, they were like
- 13:12a shrill bitch, or like a meek little like.
- 13:16Right. Or competitive with each other,
- 13:18like they just gas each other up at the freaking nightclub.
- 13:23They call shotgun on men and I'm like, good, go with God.
- 13:27Like you did call shotgun first. They're like dancing together.
- 13:30They get swarmed by creeps and they navigate through it.
- 13:33Also, I love that throughout the movie they just authentically
- 13:36turn to each other and they're like, Oh my God.
- 13:38Like they're just having these honest reactions that we have
- 13:41when we're out in the world dealing with jabronis.
- 13:44It just, it's I feel like that movie was, it's so sad how rare
- 13:50it is, but it felt like the beginning of like the Broad City
- 13:53friendship where they're just like full send full hype.
- 13:57Like they just adore each other, you know?
- 13:59So much fun. Yeah.
- 14:01They want to make sure that no one is missing out on what life
- 14:05has to offer. Yeah.
- 14:06And I thought that was so beautiful.
- 14:08And and also all the men are just like buffoons.
- 14:14I loved that they kind of twisted that narrative on its
- 14:17head. And it was like, the men in this
- 14:19story are really just tools to advance the story between these
- 14:24women forward and their friendship and their
- 14:26relationship, rather than as a tool to show like, oh, they're
- 14:33growing in their, like, personal development because they're
- 14:36settling down with someone. It wasn't so much that.
- 14:39It was like, instead I thought that the the message that I
- 14:44received was like, I'm just tired of the game.
- 14:47Yeah. It wasn't so much like, I'm such
- 14:50a slut and I have to stop messing around so I can finally
- 14:53grow up. It was like I'm just tired.
- 14:56Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And aren't we all?
- 14:58And aren't we? All like ladies, am I right?
- 15:00But they were. The men were so ancillary.
- 15:02Even when it opened, it was like, it's like talking about
- 15:05Christina, the name of Cameron Diaz's character.
- 15:08And the guys are just idiots, you know, And the jokes are
- 15:12punching at them like one guy. He's like, you know, it's normal
- 15:15to have also impotence. I haven't heard us call it that
- 15:19in a really long time. Long.
- 15:21Time. But these were the times.
- 15:22And he's like, oh, I had that after dating her.
- 15:25Yeah. They said long term, yeah.
- 15:27Long term, yeah. Yeah, I, I want so badly to see
- 15:32the documentary where people say, tell me about Molly.
- 15:38I wanna see that. I wanna see that.
- 15:39Sure. Don't we all?
- 15:41I really liked how in that opening scene, they're like, OK,
- 15:45tell me about her. And she's, you know, she is a
- 15:47heartbreaker. She is leaving these men high
- 15:51and dry. And she is.
- 15:56They call her a player rather than like she's a skank.
- 15:59Which is totally. The language of the time and and
- 16:02still, but I was just so I can't remember if they used the word
- 16:07skank at all. I actually don't think they did
- 16:12and I don't even know if between.
- 16:14I think maybe the only time is when they were the girlies were
- 16:17like riffing with each other and they're like, you have literal
- 16:22jizz on this dress that you're going to take into the
- 16:24laundromat. But the men, I mean, Jason
- 16:27Batemans character was obviously like the misogynist foil.
- 16:30So the, you know, he might have said the word slut, but he
- 16:35existed to say that like that was exactly.
- 16:38Yeah, he. Existed to be their foil, to be
- 16:40like someone that we laugh at, whereas the women were laughing
- 16:45with them. Totally.
- 16:46They were like, Christina's character is a womanizer.
- 16:49And we were like, yeah, great. She sure is.
- 16:51One thing that was really fun was they mentioned the movie
- 16:55Swingers right away. Oh my God.
- 16:57Yeah, talked about that on the pod, the influence of that movie
- 17:01and and how cool that this film that was about like men and
- 17:08their friendship and this movie about like women and their
- 17:12friendship. There was just like these
- 17:13crossovers. It was like it, I would
- 17:15certainly not say like this is the girl version of Swingers,
- 17:18but like the fact that Swingers had that kind of influence on
- 17:22this movie, or at least like on culture at the time.
- 17:25That was fun. OK, I also love one thing about
- 17:30movies in the early 2000s is when they say the title of the
- 17:34movie in the 1st 10 minutes when someone when there's dialogue
- 17:37and someone said well isn't that the sweetest thing?
- 17:39I. Forgot I didn't notice.
- 17:40Oh my God. It was when?
- 17:43What's his? What's his name?
- 17:44Peter. Oh.
- 17:45Sure. I forgot.
- 17:46Yeah, it's not about the men. This.
- 17:48Is not about him. It was when he was first getting
- 17:52in an argument with Christina Cameron.
- 17:53He has this character and she, she.
- 17:56Pinched his ass. Yeah, and she said something
- 17:58about like about love or dating or something.
- 18:04And he goes, well, isn't that just the sweetest thing?
- 18:06Oh my God, amazing. In like a in like a sarcastic
- 18:09way. So that's fun.
- 18:11We see women having sex for fun. A lot of it, honestly, it's,
- 18:16it's amazing. It's.
- 18:17A lot of fun to watch. One thing that I think was
- 18:21unfortunately lost between the screenplay and the execution of
- 18:25the film is unfortunately, all three of these women are
- 18:30conventionally so hot. And so a lot of a lot of what I
- 18:35think was designed to be camp and really tongue in cheek came
- 18:40across as like, they're sexy, aren't they?
- 18:44You know. Especially the musical number,
- 18:47the penis song. Like I think that was one piece
- 18:51in particular that was meant to be more like silly Monty Python,
- 18:57Like we're all just breaking out in song.
- 18:59And because these women are undeniably gorgeous in by
- 19:03conventional standards, it became like a, oh, they're so
- 19:08hot. Like it became almost like a
- 19:10they were trying to lean into the sexiness of it when it
- 19:13wasn't supposed to be sexy. Sex wasn't supposed to be sexy.
- 19:17Right. It was supposed to be like as
- 19:18crude and camp as possible, but hot women can't be funny.
- 19:23I don't know if you guys knew that.
- 19:24But I don't know about that. Oh, Oh no, I don't know if
- 19:29anyone told you that's actually not.
- 19:30True. Yeah.
- 19:30Oh, OK, I'm learning it here. I'm really glad to hear about
- 19:33it. Yeah.
- 19:34That penis scene though, do. The penis song.
- 19:37Do you all know what to do, which is to go to YouTube to
- 19:40watch it? Because it's not, you can't.
- 19:42It's not a part of the film. It's.
- 19:44So disappointing that that was what ended up on the unrated
- 19:49version like DVD. The deleted scene rather than
- 19:53the the piercing being stuck in the mouth like it.
- 19:58To me I mean. And that was also hilarious.
- 20:01Again, a moment. It is still a musical number.
- 20:04Yeah, absolutely. And it is still so funny and
- 20:07camp and over the top, but I was just really surprised that a
- 20:13scene with a blowjob was the one that was maintained or retained
- 20:19in the movie rather than. I think it's, I think it's
- 20:23'cause she, I think it's 'cause like she was maybe pleasuring
- 20:29him with a blowjob. And then the whole, the whole
- 20:33gimmick of the song of like you're so basically they're
- 20:36like, you have to say that whatever guy you're sleeping
- 20:40with, you have to say your Dick is too big to fit inside me.
- 20:43And like, the chorus is you're too big to fit in here.
- 20:46It's amazing. But it's it's a ruse.
- 20:49You know, they're like, just say whatever the fuck to make them
- 20:52feel good. It doesn't matter.
- 20:54And yeah, and maybe it was like, that's too women are too smart
- 20:58and strategic and so get that out of here.
- 21:02But yeah, the blowjob, You would think the blowjob scene would be
- 21:06maybe a a kiss too far. A kiss too far.
- 21:10Literally. But it was thanks a woman.
- 21:13Can be funny. Yeah, maybe they can.
- 21:15Yeah, we'll see. Yeah.
- 21:16Yeah. But I I just, I needed to watch
- 21:20that scene on YouTube like multiple times and I wish it
- 21:23were in the movie. I woke up this morning and
- 21:25watched it again. I laid in my bed and I said the
- 21:27first thing I'm going to do this morning is watch that scene.
- 21:30Yeah. So go watch it.
- 21:32Go watch it on YouTube. It's hilarious.
- 21:34I mean, do watch this movie and then just.
- 21:36Oh my God. When you're like, God, something
- 21:38is missing. Yeah, go look up the penis song.
- 21:43Yeah, the sweetest thing on YouTube, please.
- 21:47OK, so in the in the beginning of the movie, they're reading
- 21:50through the 10 commandments of love or whatever, just like
- 21:54another cheesy book. What do you think?
- 21:56And and then one of them is like, that's relationship
- 21:59propaganda. Yeah.
- 22:00What do you think is the modern relationship propaganda?
- 22:04Wow, an idea, a book, a person like, you know?
- 22:09Before I answer that I have to say watching watching them reach
- 22:13for that book the 10 commandments, I was like oh
- 22:15Jesus Christ. But at the same time, maybe nary
- 22:192 months ago I ordered the book calling in the ones so oh.
- 22:25Girl I know. I know I shouldn't confess that
- 22:28here, but I was like, this is so embarrassing.
- 22:29They're reading a book like this.
- 22:31And then I looked at my Amazon orders and I was like, it's
- 22:34sometimes when it gets rough out there, you're like, I'll do
- 22:37whatever it takes, you know? I'll take it.
- 22:39I'll take in all the information.
- 22:40I. Can I'll take in all the
- 22:41information I can? Yeah, I'll do.
- 22:43I'll. Yeah, I'm ready.
- 22:44Hands on deck. I'm ready.
- 22:46Any any strategy? Every strategy.
- 22:48Yeah, like a, a white 49 year old woman named Karen writing
- 22:52this book in the Midwest about how to find love.
- 22:55I think that's the book I accidentally bought.
- 22:56And so I think she also wrote the 10 commandments, the
- 23:00relationship propaganda. Now I I don't, I don't think, I
- 23:07don't know. Is there any word in like a New
- 23:09Frontier? I think that probably like
- 23:13dating TikTok influencers or like dating coaches on TikTok
- 23:18giving advice. Maybe the new like modern
- 23:21relationship propaganda, like the relationship propaganda
- 23:25landscape, has been democratized in many.
- 23:27Ways. And so I think that we've had
- 23:29like a lot of unusual voices coming to the forefront.
- 23:34I think that unfortunately, like in a much darker way, the modern
- 23:37relationship propaganda is like in cell propaganda.
- 23:41Yeah, absolutely. So there's that.
- 23:43But I think that like for relationship propaganda aimed at
- 23:48women, I would say it's probably more like the TikTok dating
- 23:51coaches, not at which some of you are probably great, but many
- 23:57of you are probably not. Yeah, I I think like 4 years ago
- 24:01I noticed a really big trend in everyone ascribing all of their
- 24:08relationships and reactions to attachment style.
- 24:12I was. Just going to say yeah and and
- 24:14like, yes, there's value in knowing your attachment styles,
- 24:17but it to me it felt completely reductive.
- 24:21It was like, if you have any feeling at all, it's because
- 24:24this person is bringing up old attachment trauma wounds.
- 24:27Also, I moved to Los Angeles. Don't do it.
- 24:31And it was like sex and love addiction is very big there.
- 24:36And so the minute I got there, I felt like everybody was talking
- 24:39about if you've ever felt anything, you can attribute it
- 24:42to being a sex and love addict and to not knowing your
- 24:46attachment style well enough. And I was like, Jesus fucking
- 24:48Christ, can a girl just get railed out here?
- 24:49Like what the fuck you know? Like it can I be?
- 24:52Yeah, can it be? OK, Yeah, yeah.
- 24:55And like, sorry that sometimes responding to attachment styles
- 24:59are exciting and you get adrenaline.
- 25:01I feel like I'm lobotomized in this world on a day-to-day
- 25:04basis. So get the heart rate going, you
- 25:06know, absolutely we. Take what we can get.
- 25:08What's so bad about? What's so bad about?
- 25:11It what's so bad about maybe some toxicity?
- 25:14Yeah, yeah. I also think the new I don't
- 25:18even think this is like relationship propaganda, but
- 25:20there's just this reckoning that women are better than men and in
- 25:26the dating pool, there's just a lot more available women.
- 25:30And I mean, we saw it on the season of Love is blind Denver,
- 25:34which and none of those people are from Denver, just so you
- 25:37know, just so you know, they live in Lai know this because
- 25:40I'm like their Rover. And so I was like, those people
- 25:42aren't those are not Denver residents.
- 25:45But you know, all spoiler. Can I spoil it?
- 25:49Yeah, if you. Yeah.
- 25:51Yeah, like change the channel or whatever if you need to, but all
- 25:55the women say no at the altar. They're like, you would make my
- 25:59life worse. And So what are you bringing to
- 26:03enhance my life? And it is, I mean, I think among
- 26:06the girlies, that's what's being discussed the most, which is
- 26:09probably not good that like the girls are having that
- 26:11conversation of decentering men or being like, if you're going
- 26:14to be in my life, I want it to improve my life.
- 26:16And then meanwhile there are a lot of men getting red pilled.
- 26:19And so, God, it's a really. It's so.
- 26:23Dark out there. It's really dark out there.
- 26:25Really dark. Giving fascism.
- 26:26Yeah. So yeah.
- 26:28But the sweetest thing is like, super fun, you know?
- 26:31Yeah. And the 10 commandments, Yeah.
- 26:32It's so funny. I love, I loved that they were
- 26:35like, they just the the way in which it was so 2002 like that
- 26:43they couldn't just track him down.
- 26:45They had to literally drive across the state.
- 26:48So So for those who haven't seen it or haven't seen it in a
- 26:51while, Christina Cameron Diaz's character meets this guy at a
- 26:57club and she starts to at first they have like a chili encounter
- 27:02and then she decides to, as Christina Ricci's character
- 27:08says, she named the dog, she named the pet.
- 27:10She like, starts talking about him with his real name rather
- 27:14than like some nickname or whatever.
- 27:15She's like his name is Peter and.
- 27:17She's like, uh Oh, yeah. So she starts to become attached
- 27:20to him. She has a little crush on him.
- 27:23He invites her to go to another party.
- 27:25She declines. She doesn't go.
- 27:27And then she feels regret. Yeah.
- 27:29Christina Ricci's. Applegate No, I love it.
- 27:32I love it. It's I love it.
- 27:36Christina Ricci would have been great in this world.
- 27:37She would have. Christina Applegate's character
- 27:41takes her takes Cameron Diaz on a road trip to the middle of
- 27:47nowhere to go to what she thinks is going to be his brother's
- 27:51wedding. It turns out to be his wedding.
- 27:55To who? Parker Post.
- 27:57Oh my God. Also also they're they decide
- 28:02they Parker and Peter don't get married.
- 28:06And later when they're at the reception and Parker Posey is
- 28:09like, I actually want to take the money and go to Bali.
- 28:13I was like, we are at the beginning of the White Lotus.
- 28:15This is this is the training. This it was a prophecy foretold.
- 28:19Yeah, this. Was the prequel.
- 28:21Yeah, yeah, that was exciting to see.
- 28:23Just leaving bread crumbs for us.
- 28:25Yeah. Huge shout out to sponsor of
- 28:29Dude IDK spider moving and storage.
- 28:32I recently used them to move into my new place and couldn't
- 28:35be happier with how efficient they were.
- 28:38They were so kind, they made it look so easy and it was just top
- 28:42notch experience. So definitely recommend that you
- 28:45check them out if you've got a move coming up.
- 28:47Residential, commercial, local, cross country, anything in
- 28:50between. You can get a free quote at
- 28:53spidermoving.com and you can give them a follow on social
- 28:56media at Spider Moving and Storage.
- 29:00But yeah, they go on an adventure.
- 29:01It is. So it's so fun.
- 29:03They go on a little road trip. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:05And there is. I mean, despite the fact that,
- 29:08like I said before, there are some parts that are sexualized
- 29:13that I don't think we're meant to be sexy, There is one scene
- 29:18in particular that I really loved after after they have an
- 29:23encounter with a glory hole in a bathroom and they and they're
- 29:27like, shot across the room with toilet water.
- 29:30Yeah, they're changing their clothes.
- 29:33Yeah. We also can we talk about the
- 29:35fact that to this wedding, her bra was an American flag
- 29:40swimsuit. Yeah.
- 29:41Because it's laundry day. So they're both wearing like,
- 29:46they're both wearing this ratty, not sexy underwear.
- 29:50It's amazing. They're like, they're both like
- 29:53to each other. They're like, I have a
- 29:54confession. It's laundry day.
- 29:55And so my underwear is ugly. And I loved that part.
- 29:59I wanted more of that where it's like, yes, these women are
- 30:05they're acting raunchy. Maybe they even have their
- 30:07clothes off, but they're wearing like, you know, real underwear.
- 30:12Right. And her intention is to
- 30:14potentially Mack with Peter that night.
- 30:17And she still went into it being like, I'm wearing this because
- 30:22men should just be happy to be there, you know what I mean?
- 30:24Like, yeah, yeah, yeah. Even if it's laundry day, go
- 30:26forth into the night just, like, do it.
- 30:28Absolutely. Yeah.
- 30:29Wear the bikini top. Where the American flag bikini
- 30:32top is a bra because it's laundry day.
- 30:36But the sexual scene after, so they're, they're changing.
- 30:40Are you talking about the driving scene?
- 30:42Yeah, so the driving scene. So fun.
- 30:45The driving scene is very funny because one of the women is
- 30:51trying to find the. It was like the cap to Chapstick
- 30:55or something. Yeah.
- 30:56Yeah. She's trying to find something
- 30:58in the seat. It looks as though she's
- 31:00performing oral sex on her friend.
- 31:01Yeah. A motorcyclist.
- 31:03A man is right next to them. He becomes distracted and gets
- 31:07into a wreck. Yeah.
- 31:09He survives, they do show that. Survive, but Christina
- 31:13Applegate's. Character nailed it.
- 31:15Thank you. She is kind of playing into it
- 31:19because she's like, this is so funny.
- 31:20And maybe he'll crash his motorcycle.
- 31:22So she's playing into it to her naive friend's chagrin,
- 31:28pretending like she's being pleasured by her friend.
- 31:30And, and while I did think, I don't know, on the one hand, I'm
- 31:36like, it is funny that she's in on the joke that she's like, I
- 31:39know that men think that if women are hooking up with each
- 31:43other, it's for them. And so she's like trolling him.
- 31:47Totally, Yeah. I wonder, do you think that it
- 31:50still was coming from this perspective of like, Oh my God,
- 31:55the punchline is that like, isn't it so funny if women have
- 31:58sex with each other? I mean, I feel like they kind of
- 32:02subvert the stereotype 'cause they do that in the nightclub as
- 32:04well. They do.
- 32:06Yeah, because she has fake boobs and so the other women are like
- 32:12feeling her up, but they're but it's not in a sexual way.
- 32:15But all the men are like hubba, hubba.
- 32:17Right, like these guys are walking by and the door swings
- 32:19open and what they imagine to be happening in the girls bathroom
- 32:23right in their wildest fantasies is happening where like 5 women
- 32:27are just like grabbing her boobs and they're like exchanging lip
- 32:29gloss and having a chitchat. And I, I mean, I think it's just
- 32:33another example of, like, men are the idiots.
- 32:36And it's just so easy to, to, like, dupe them, you know?
- 32:40Yeah, yeah. Well, good.
- 32:43I'm glad that you felt that. We could can I also say I really
- 32:46like her exchange with Peter. It felt in all in so many of
- 32:51these ROM coms. It's so like, I don't know,
- 32:53manufactured and you're like, that's not, that is not a real
- 32:57conversation that would make me attracted to a stranger.
- 33:00But they actually have this like they have this rapport and they
- 33:04have this banter that just seems like honest.
- 33:07And then they're both like vulnerable a little bit.
- 33:09They go back and forth being like, let me buy you a drink and
- 33:11whatever. Also, one of my favorite things
- 33:14that happens. She calls him like they do
- 33:17immediately go to the place where they like read each other
- 33:19down in a way that movies do where you're like, you don't
- 33:22know enough about this person to be like, you're the girl that
- 33:24all the guys fall for, but you don't take them seriously.
- 33:28But she calls him like Mr. Safety Poo or something, which
- 33:31is insane. And then at one point he says
- 33:35nice manners. I was bodied like that is the
- 33:40that is like the meanest thing you can say to someone.
- 33:42Can you imagine someone just it's like the equivalent of just
- 33:47calling somebody like a bottom feeder.
- 33:48Instead of insulting them and cursing at them, you just say
- 33:52nice manners. It was hot.
- 33:55That cut me. Yeah, I felt that.
- 33:58I I can't imagine like a Gen. Z saying that in the nightclub,
- 34:02like nice manners, walking away. Yeah, I I think we should talk
- 34:06like that again. Yeah, when it's deserved.
- 34:09I know I'm telling myself I'm like the most crude among us,
- 34:11but I'm like, you can just say nice manners.
- 34:13And so it's. Like, I mean, yeah, but like,
- 34:15I'd only say that to someone I really, really hate, you know,
- 34:19because that's like, that's so brutal.
- 34:23It is. It's harsh.
- 34:24Yeah, it's harsh. OK, so one part that to me
- 34:29didn't age well was when they're in the dressing room at this
- 34:36bizarre dress shop, which I love.
- 34:39They're in this small town, and there's only one dress shop
- 34:41within 20 miles. And as I said before, they're
- 34:44covered in toilet water, so they need to get some new outfits.
- 34:48And before they do my favorite thing, which is a montage.
- 34:52Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:53Which is so camp because they're like, Oh my God, do we have time
- 34:56for a movie montage? And then they do movies that
- 34:59they've been in with, like with different actors, like they do
- 35:03Dumb and Dumber. And Cameron Diaz was in The Mask
- 35:05with Jim Carrey. And I'm like.
- 35:07It was. So good.
- 35:08So smart before that happens. They are talking about the
- 35:12impact of gravity on their bodies and these women are
- 35:16allegedly 28. Allegedly, yeah.
- 35:18And so they're looking at different parts of their body
- 35:22saying like it's so, you know, it's so flabby, like their,
- 35:25their boobs aren't as perky. Their arms have like skin that
- 35:29hangs down or whatever. And it is always, I mean, it's,
- 35:34it's like when they try to make a hot woman look like a nerd or
- 35:38be like, oh, she's so, so not pretty.
- 35:43It's, it's like that. And also, these women are very
- 35:49thin, conventionally so hot. And even if they weren't, it's
- 35:54like, come on. Like, I know that it's supposed
- 35:57to be reflective of, like, this is the kind of conversation that
- 36:00girls really have is that they, like, they stand in front of a
- 36:03mirror and poke at different parts of their body and talk
- 36:05about how being getting older is so hard.
- 36:07Yeah. But I didn't need to see it.
- 36:12OK, I feel mixed on this one. Tell me more.
- 36:14So I I was like, this is one of the first scenes we're
- 36:17encountering that could be, could be considered not aging.
- 36:22Well, yeah. But I also do think that women
- 36:25have those conversations pretty often, which we shouldn't have
- 36:29to. It sucks, you know?
- 36:31Right. But women like of all creeds,
- 36:33backgrounds and looks. I agree.
- 36:35It was like, it was kind of like the Barbie scene where it's
- 36:39like, you know, this like this idea of like the perfect
- 36:43aesthetic woman, but also I think it reflects that like even
- 36:47those women are conditioned to tear themselves down.
- 36:52And I don't, I don't really like dig spotlighting it in movies,
- 36:57but it, and it could be because like I'm 36 right now.
- 37:00And so I'm like, these conversations are being had with
- 37:02people and I, I don't know, I, I didn't, I didn't want women as
- 37:09hot as them to have the conversations they were having
- 37:12where they're, but I also was like, this feels like an honest
- 37:17conversation between women because we're not right.
- 37:20We're not out of the woods of doing that and being
- 37:22self-conscious about aging or how we look physically and
- 37:26everything. So I I was like, I don't, I
- 37:30don't want all the time and attention spent on it.
- 37:32But it also felt authentic to what?
- 37:34Yeah, sometimes girlies do talk about, you know.
- 37:37Yeah. I just think that, like,
- 37:40spotlighting it, normalizing it, yeah, is a bummer because like,
- 37:45the more time that women spend talking about their bodies, the
- 37:50less time they talk about anything else.
- 37:53Yeah, no, totally. Like of of use to themselves in
- 37:57the world. Yeah.
- 37:58You know, so to me it felt like mostly an eye roll cuz it's
- 38:03like, OK girl. Like, yeah, first of all, you're
- 38:0628. You're not geriatric.
- 38:08You're you're 28. But the standard of like, oh, 22
- 38:15year olds are, yeah, the class of hot, Yeah.
- 38:19And 28 is when you start to expire I mean.
- 38:21You're an old it's. Kind of, it's kind of a funny
- 38:24commentary. Like on the one hand, I'm sort
- 38:25of like, well, maybe it's the irony that's funny.
- 38:28Yeah. Yeah.
- 38:29But. But yeah, I don't know.
- 38:33I think that maybe it could have been interesting if like the
- 38:37woman who owns the shop and is working at the shop, who's like
- 38:41probably in her 70s, came in and like, I don't know, said
- 38:46something was like, you guys are the hottest you ever been, Like
- 38:49shut up and. Go get them.
- 38:52You know what I mean? Like.
- 38:53Fucked. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:55I hear you on that. Yeah, but what can you do?
- 39:02Can't be, can't be. Perfect.
- 39:03I also do wish that they, and this might just be my own self
- 39:06absorbed lens, but I wish, and I thought for a little bit at the
- 39:11beginning of the movie that they were supposed to be in their
- 39:1530s. I know that that's naive of us
- 39:17though, because it was 2002 and like that was a touch too far to
- 39:21have a single woman in her early to mid 30s.
- 39:24Like there was no way they were going to.
- 39:26But I really felt like it had that tone to it.
- 39:29It did because they were established in their careers,
- 39:31they were established in their friendships.
- 39:33They were, they were obviously like, you know, very experienced
- 39:38in the world of dating. They knew kind of what they
- 39:41wanted. They knew how to play the game,
- 39:43even though they were tired of it.
- 39:45It just felt like they were in a place of self assurance that
- 39:49read like. Three, yeah.
- 39:52I mean, that was my favorite part about the movie was their
- 39:54sexual appetites. Like I loved when Cameron Diaz
- 39:58like had a dream about him going down on her, which I never got
- 40:02to see on TNT or TBS. I mean, it's like what this is
- 40:05so like. A vital part of the movie
- 40:08because that is what prompts her to have Regret Squad about not
- 40:15going to that hotel room. Honestly perfection.
- 40:18She's like I could have gotten great head.
- 40:20I am going to follow this man to Norcal and show up in an
- 40:25unhinged outfit to his brother's wedding.
- 40:28Really his wedding. Like we need more movies that
- 40:31are about women. Just being like that was the
- 40:32best sex or non sex sex dream I've ever had.
- 40:35I'll do anything. I'll do anything.
- 40:37I'll drive across. I'll drive across the state with
- 40:39my. I'm ready.
- 40:41Yeah. Yeah.
- 40:43OK. What was up with the slow dance
- 40:47at the club? OK.
- 40:48So later in the movie, when she's gone back, she thinks that
- 40:53the man of her dreams, the one that got away, got married, and
- 40:58she's having a reckoning with herself.
- 41:00Like, maybe I should give other men a chance.
- 41:03Like, maybe I shouldn't give them fake phone numbers, blah,
- 41:05blah, blah. They're they're all dancing in
- 41:09the club and then all of a sudden, like a middle school
- 41:11dance. Yeah, you got it Bad by Usher
- 41:14starts playing and everyone starts slow dancing.
- 41:17Did that happen at the club? Yes.
- 41:20Oh God, yeah, sorry. That's awful.
- 41:23We have a little bit of an age gap, so I will tell you it was a
- 41:29dramatic part. The cinematography changed, the
- 41:33videography changed notably in the movie, but it also did
- 41:37reflect dark nights of the soul where you have been at the club
- 41:41and like you have the contrast of nights where you are out with
- 41:44your girls, you are Eiffel towering each other 'cause
- 41:47that's the most fun, you know? And that was the beginning
- 41:50scene. Like they are just living,
- 41:52loving and laughing. And then towards the end, when
- 41:55we're in that chapter of growth, you know, she just the the music
- 42:00slows down, the filming gets blurry and like the still frames
- 42:05slow and but I have absolutely been there.
- 42:09You're a little bit cross faded and you're like, what is like,
- 42:14what is the point? And what are what about all
- 42:16these shallow connections that I've like chased to date?
- 42:19And now I want something more, but I don't know if I'll get it
- 42:22like it was. Right.
- 42:24That happens in the club. Yeah, and that happens when the
- 42:27slow song starts in the club. I well, for me, when I hear
- 42:32Usher, it's hard to dance slowly, but that one you've got
- 42:35it bad is it is inherently a slow song.
- 42:39And my experience of being out at clubs dancing when you're a
- 42:44little fucked up and cross faded and sad and being like an emo
- 42:48girly is that you're like, you slow down and then you're like
- 42:52twerking on someone and then you're like crying and you're
- 42:55like, what's it? You know, a person contains
- 42:57multitudes, especially in that moment.
- 42:59So that actually did feel like an honest reflection of the
- 43:03times. Yeah.
- 43:05I feel like an elder on a couch talking about.
- 43:08And thank you for. That.
- 43:09Club Clerb. So much for that I really
- 43:12appreciate. It just needed an even
- 43:14perspective about that scene. Definitely.
- 43:16Thank you so much. For it was.
- 43:17Weird lived experience. I'm brave.
- 43:20But I just, it was such a weird song choice because you got it
- 43:24bad. It made sense for the next scene
- 43:28because the song continues to play through the next scene and
- 43:30it's like, yeah, you do got it bad.
- 43:32Like she's got it bad. The song makes sense in the
- 43:35club. It's a breakup song and
- 43:38everyone's treating it like a regular slow jam.
- 43:41And I'm like, this is not a sexy song, This is a breakup song.
- 43:45This is a sad song. Oh, you're oh, OK, we're saying
- 43:49the same thing then you were saying.
- 43:51You're saying they were dancing too slowly and not sad enough?
- 43:55No, I'm saying that in the club, why would the DJ play?
- 44:01You got it bad. With the intention.
- 44:04Of getting people together for a slow dance.
- 44:07No, I concede that point too. You know what I mean?
- 44:09And that is? The DJ personal choice and that
- 44:12it's been made before. I've experienced it, but it's
- 44:15rare and it wasn't the right choice.
- 44:17Yeah, it. Was not the right choice for
- 44:19this film. OK, I thought you were pining on
- 44:21her interior landscape and her reaction to.
- 44:24It I was really glad that you took it that way because I like
- 44:29I really think that was important that we that we got to
- 44:32the point of like her turning point of being like, what does
- 44:37it all mean? Yeah, what?
- 44:38What is this all? For however, I also want to say
- 44:43I liked the moment where she and Christina Applegate slash Ricci,
- 44:47whose character, whose character just name is Courtney.
- 44:50Thank you, I just couldn't remember.
- 44:52So when they were talking and it was just this, like, quiet,
- 44:55honest moment, Are you tired of the game?
- 44:57And she's like, yeah, maybe I'm tired of the game.
- 45:00But then only three weeks later, Christina Applegate was like,
- 45:04bagged a fantastic guy. Yeah, he seems sweet.
- 45:06And I, I did want to write a letter to 2002 to be like, it's
- 45:11not that simple. You can be tired of the game,
- 45:14and it's not just a three-week turn around to find a solid
- 45:17person. There was.
- 45:18It was very aspirational to show someone who's simply tired of
- 45:23the game and therefore like it is just within her control that
- 45:28she can quit the game and with no time wasted.
- 45:35Call in the one you might say. I was like, that's the part that
- 45:38didn't age well for me, yeah. That that and you took that.
- 45:41Personally, it's not keeping up with the times.
- 45:42No, I really did, yeah. Yeah, Yeah, yeah.
- 45:44That was tough. Yeah, Yeah, that was tough.
- 45:48OK. So we've talked about the female
- 45:51pleasure. We've talked about the men being
- 45:54buffoons. We've talked about the
- 45:57raunchiness of it. I mean, you and I both are no
- 46:01strangers to Rauch and we honest, we were actually talking
- 46:06about that yesterday, before we even.
- 46:08Yeah, we hang out like on the side.
- 46:10We also we are actually like friends on the side.
- 46:13Don't worry about outside of this for.
- 46:14Cheating on the pod? Yeah, we do have conversations.
- 46:17We don't record. And I just wonder, like, do you
- 46:23think that the Rauch is something that's like essential
- 46:26to you and why this movie resonates with you so much?
- 46:30Yeah, I do. And I think that's also why I
- 46:33wish I had seen this movie in its entirety when I was younger
- 46:36because I do feel like my my version of reverence, like the
- 46:41way I show up in the world to Jesus and to whatever faith I've
- 46:45decided at the time is to be irreverent, is to be, you know,
- 46:49making my friends giggle, maybe doing a little acid, being very
- 46:53crude and lewd. And yeah, I really loved that
- 46:57about this movie. Yeah.
- 46:59Yeah, I think that I feel mostly positive about it.
- 47:04Mostly I was like, yes, this rocks Like I can, I can really
- 47:08lean into some sophomore humor. And I think it's also because,
- 47:12like, this movie was made for me and not just for, like, boy.
- 47:18Yeah, totally. But at the same time, there is
- 47:21this part of me that's like, is this a little bit too lean in?
- 47:24Is it a little bit too like, well, if you can't beat them,
- 47:27join them. Like if you if you can't, if you
- 47:30can't get them to stop making jokes about your pussy, then go
- 47:34ahead and make the jokes yourself.
- 47:36Get ahead of it like. Is it?
- 47:37Is it too much like? Oh, well, women can be
- 47:40chauvinist too, Isn't that? Isn't that progress?
- 47:46I don't know. But I think that because they
- 47:48weren't the butt of their own jokes, that was helpful.
- 47:55And I don't think that the ranch was inherently, like,
- 47:59misogynistic, like, like the fact that Courtney got sprayed
- 48:04across the room with toilet water.
- 48:06I mean, sure, it was not like, oh, wow.
- 48:09And it's so funny because she's a woman.
- 48:12Right. Yeah, yeah.
- 48:13There was like physicality and ham that wasn't only sexualized,
- 48:17like the maggot meal that went flying and then flew back into
- 48:20the car, but I did. Yeah.
- 48:22The crudeness. Well, I also think part of the
- 48:25reason I was really comfortable with it is because she had, I
- 48:32think the whole movie goes back to her having a sex dream where
- 48:34he's going down. Yeah.
- 48:36Like, because it was. It just was.
- 48:39It was about them and what they wanted, you know?
- 48:41And like that, that dream was both, like, funny and hammy, but
- 48:45it wasn't it. It had nothing to do with, like,
- 48:49her down there. Like, it wasn't crude in a way
- 48:53that picked apart, like her desires or her body.
- 48:58And so I felt like it was in a category of being like, men can
- 49:03be idiots and we can still want things from them, and sometimes
- 49:07they can be way better than idiots.
- 49:09And we're into it, you know? Right.
- 49:11Like when when someone Blair's character is like, but I think
- 49:15he's dumb and they're like so. So, Oh my God, what happened to
- 49:19me last week? And I did.
- 49:24I did. Yeah.
- 49:24I kind of see what you're saying.
- 49:26It's like what, like the the laundromat scene where she
- 49:28brings in the dress that stained, which is like that that
- 49:33is it's a little much, but also like women have had that
- 49:37experience. And I did think it was hilarious
- 49:39that, like, father Finn came in and.
- 49:41Oh my God, the way that they that was so Monty Python the way
- 49:45that it was like it was like she tried to sneak out.
- 49:48They brought in an entire field trip of school children.
- 49:52They brought in the priest. Everyone's asking about her mom
- 49:55that and and then Oh my God. And then the the dry cleaner,
- 50:00like licking it off the dress. Oh my God.
- 50:02Also, in what world for any stain would you do?
- 50:05That don't do that you. Don't test it that way.
- 50:08They did have so many great characters.
- 50:10I like the the blowjob scene. I was curious about the
- 50:14costuming because it seemed like it was filmed on Halloween like.
- 50:18Yes. You had a nurse wearing a
- 50:20stethoscope and like a mini dress.
- 50:22You had you had like the YMCA lineup of policemen gonna.
- 50:27Say, it seemed to me like, did we just did the strip club get
- 50:32let out and we all came here? And all 100 of them were that
- 50:36like there were hundreds of people there.
- 50:38So funny, I do get that it's the.
- 50:40Movie. So Monty Python also, I didn't
- 50:43realize, but when when the release happened, when the
- 50:46freedom from the trenches, a lot of people like there were the
- 50:51two guys in pleather the Kinks who kissed and San Francisco's
- 50:55iconic for that. Yeah, we love it.
- 50:57And then there was a seemingly Orthodox Jewish person and a,
- 51:01yeah, Palestinian person hugging.
- 51:03And I was like, Oh, my God, you know, yeah.
- 51:06Didn't expect that to happen in the sweetest thing.
- 51:09Yeah. They said, yeah, we're we're
- 51:13crossing these bridges. Yeah, But that, that scene,
- 51:15everyone's fit was straight out of a Spirit Halloween store.
- 51:19It was incredible. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:21I loved it. Yeah.
- 51:24Yeah, I thought that that was that was so camp.
- 51:27It was so funny. Everyone's singing along.
- 51:30Oh I loved. It it was amazing.
- 51:32Everyone, everyone in town showed up there.
- 51:35There's one thing in that scene that really kind of disturbed me
- 51:41and I don't know, is it the whole scene?
- 51:44Honestly, no. And I think that it's hard to
- 51:49say whether or not it was intentional.
- 51:51It probably wasn't, but in the context of the early 2000s, that
- 51:55was really at a time when like the rise of hardcore porn was
- 52:01problem and when she is stuck with a penis in her mouth.
- 52:07Sure. And we see her.
- 52:09We see her only from like we only see her eyes.
- 52:11Like we see we don't see the mouth.
- 52:13Yeah, I guess she actually when filming that they had her with a
- 52:17banana in her mouth. But she has really bad TMJ.
- 52:19So she said it was like super painful.
- 52:21Yeah, I know anywhere. Poor thing.
- 52:23So wait. Was that just so that it was
- 52:27authentic, they put a banana in her mouth?
- 52:29I mean I think so that like when?
- 52:31She she would look as if she. And when she was like singing,
- 52:34yeah, remember when she, like is trying to like speak and sing?
- 52:37She like, needed something in her mouth.
- 52:39So Banana we. Do learn with bananas, Yeah,
- 52:41that's what. They say so.
- 52:44So instead of, I mean, OK, so in that situation, of course a
- 52:48person would be crying. Yes, because how stressful, how
- 52:52embarrassing, how scary. You think you're about to go
- 52:54into surgery. Yeah, right.
- 52:57And then you're probably going to have to face your your
- 52:59priest, your elementary school, your everybody.
- 53:03But when there was like, it was just like a close up of her
- 53:06face. She clearly has like a penis
- 53:08stuck in her mouth and there's like tears.
- 53:11It really was kind of like evocative of this, like
- 53:15direction of where pornography was going at the time and like
- 53:18the images that people were becoming like used to seeing and
- 53:24the way in which like then people, I don't know, started to
- 53:28like treat sex and sexuality in mainstream culture, mainstream
- 53:33films. So that just felt like, I don't
- 53:37know, I didn't like that there were tears.
- 53:42I know that that's like, I know that I'm like bringing it to
- 53:44kind of a dark place, but it just in the context of the time
- 53:47especially, it just was a little bit chilling.
- 53:51We'll also like if we didn't live in a patriarchal society,
- 53:57then it it would be fine to be like, yeah, I want to be choking
- 54:00down on a Dick and crying, sorry, you know, but the problem
- 54:04is that we do and it it's not, it's not uncomplicated.
- 54:10And like some people do want that.
- 54:12Some people do want that like even a level of kink where stuff
- 54:16like that is happening. That's great.
- 54:18Go with God, you know, but because it has been so violent
- 54:23to arrive at a place of safety of like, these are my sexual
- 54:26desires. This is what I want to happen,
- 54:28right. Yeah.
- 54:28You see a woman who's crying with a Dick in her mouth and
- 54:31you're like, oh man. Oh, do we want to popularize
- 54:33this? Like, yeah, no, I mean also,
- 54:37though, I think if they're if you were like physically kind of
- 54:41suffocating a little bit, your tear ducts are gonna you're
- 54:44gonna be crying, of course, yeah.
- 54:46But yeah, I I see what you mean. It was a little bit of evocative
- 54:49of the times we were heading in that maybe didn't turn out so
- 54:53great for us, you know? Yeah.
- 54:56Yeah. So that's really like no fault
- 54:59to the film makers. That's no fault to like that
- 55:02direction. Or that decision.
- 55:05It just. It's like a little jarring to
- 55:08see. Yeah, yeah, cuz you're like, I'm
- 55:10worried about her. And in this case we should be
- 55:12like that. This is not comfortable what
- 55:15she's going through. And she got there by trying to
- 55:19make him feel good, you know? Yeah.
- 55:21That sounded like I was victim blaming.
- 55:22Oh, my God. And.
- 55:23You know what is so I love they they first start singing relax.
- 55:28Oh my God, She's gonna get hard, hard.
- 55:30And she's like, when you wanna come and then she's like, Oh my
- 55:32God, sorry. Like Christine Applegate slash
- 55:34Ritchie. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 55:36He's like redirect different. He's like, I'm getting hard,
- 55:38yeah. So I'm relaxed.
- 55:40And then Armageddon, what a good choice.
- 55:42Instead. Incredible.
- 55:44I was glad that it it turned to silly and it turned I mean, the
- 55:49whole thing was silly, but like, the moment of panic was so
- 55:52short. Yeah, right.
- 55:54And the moment of like, you know, relief and.
- 55:57Hope, yes, yeah, yeah. So much more.
- 56:00For all the better for. It so much more hope than there
- 56:02was despair in that, in that story.
- 56:05Yeah. Is there anything else that you
- 56:08feel like we didn't cover today that we need to discuss about
- 56:13the sweetest thing? I mean, usually when I take
- 56:15notes, I'm, I'm, I'm reading them carefully.
- 56:19I'm, I'm like, we have to talk about every little thing.
- 56:20But I was just enjoying it so much last night that like, I
- 56:24think we did cover most of it. I didn't, you know, I didn't
- 56:27love that Peter lied about his wedding.
- 56:29And that's OK. It's movie.
- 56:31We needed to have the plot. We needed them to come in on the
- 56:33wrong one. I also it was kind of nice to
- 56:39not see the challenges of long term monogamy and only get to
- 56:45chase this crush with a girly pal.
- 56:47That that made the movie fun and light.
- 56:49And I highly recommend that before, you know, you demystify
- 56:54someone. So yeah, that was another part
- 56:56of it. Do you like that that they ended
- 56:58up together at the end? I did, yeah.
- 57:01Because also I really just, I liked their dialogue.
- 57:04I liked their chemistry. I didn't like the end dialogue
- 57:08nearly as much as them meeting in in the curb.
- 57:12But yeah, it just felt like a conversation you would have when
- 57:15you're like riffing and flirting with someone.
- 57:17And of course, like, that does not, that's not the basis or
- 57:20foundation for a whole relationship and marriage, which
- 57:23they show that they have. I was like, wow, we've really
- 57:27escalated through this. But yeah, I, I, I liked them for
- 57:32each other in the few 30 seconds of interactions they had.
- 57:36Sure. But more so, I liked Christina
- 57:38Applegate and Cameron Diaz and some of their being together.
- 57:41Yeah. Yeah.
- 57:43And do you need to bleep out some of the terribly crude
- 57:46things I said on this before we go?
- 57:48You know what? That's such a good question.
- 57:50And like, probably I wanted to know that we, I wanted to, we
- 57:52know that I'm comfortable with censorship.
- 57:55Thank you so much for saying that.
- 57:57Thank you for your consent to censor.
- 57:59Probably no. I think as long as we've got the
- 58:01explicit rating on here, OK, we may need to limit to audiences
- 58:0718 and up on yeah. I'm sorry, I do have that effect
- 58:11on podcast. Look.
- 58:12I mean, look, we're talking about the sweetest thing, OK?
- 58:17Yeah, this is the. Source material like I really,
- 58:19Yeah, we're going off the momentum in the spirit of the
- 58:22movie itself. You know what I'm going to do is
- 58:24I'm going to figure out if the Penis Song musical on YouTube.
- 58:29If that is restricted to ages 18 and up, then I will restrict
- 58:34this to ages 18 and up. I think that's a good litmus,
- 58:36yeah. You know, yeah, if they're
- 58:38singing about Dicks, can't we be talking about them?
- 58:40Can't we just talk about them? Yeah.
- 58:42Do I have to be singing in order for it to be OK?
- 58:45It would be best if I did not in order to talk about that I.
- 58:49Cannot sing, Michelle, anything that you want to leave the
- 58:53listeners with today. Oh gosh, stay in Denver.
- 58:59Stay. Stay in Denver.
- 59:01Stay. But don't complain about the
- 59:02traffic. You guys are fine.
- 59:03It's totally fine. Really.
- 59:05I don't want to hear it. Yeah, no, I'm just so happy to
- 59:07see you. And yeah, women, if you're out
- 59:10there and you want to go get laid, I think you should.
- 59:14And I think you should have a good friend.
- 59:16It makes it more fun. It's.
- 59:17Way more fun when you're when you're out with your friends.
- 59:20Yeah, yeah, girly pops. Yeah.
- 59:22Girly pops, girls, gays and nays.
- 59:24Thank you so much for listening. Men, if you're listening, Met
- 59:27sis. Straight men, thank you for
- 59:30being here. I hope that you learned
- 59:31something today. I'm sorry about everything I
- 59:33said. And sorry, a little, a little
- 59:37sorry a little overall not but a little bit.
- 59:42Thank you for being here is what I'll say.
- 59:44Yes, for sure. But thank you more to the girls,
- 59:47gays and nays. Love you all so much.
- 59:50Michelle, I love you. Thank you for being here
- 59:53listeners, viewers, friends of the pod.
