- 0:00Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us. She knows you're alive in the
- 0:02Speaker 1: dunkin music lines. We have a live studio audience places packed.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Want to thank all of our sponsors for taking the
- 0:08Speaker 1: time out to come here, and a lot of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: guests too that won tickets with Robin Ben on our
- 0:12Speaker 1: flagship last week. Before we get to the questions from
- 0:15Speaker 1: the audience, one one more question here. The Notre Dame
- 0:18Speaker 1: game Thursday. It's a rarity that you have a game
- 0:21Speaker 1: during the exam break. This doesn't happen very often. How
- 0:25Speaker 1: does that change the dynamic of school and putting basketball
- 0:29Speaker 1: together with a game actually going on as opposed to
- 0:32Speaker 1: just practice.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Nobody goes to school anymore.
- 0:37Speaker 3: They just calm practice, you know, get their money, and
- 0:41Speaker 3: then they leave.
- 0:42Speaker 4: You know.
- 0:42Speaker 2: It's just they like factory workers, you know, just punch
- 0:45Speaker 2: you in.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Like my mother and father go home and I'm just
- 0:49Speaker 3: worrying about class and stuff like that. I'm surprised. I'm
- 0:52Speaker 3: as surprised as anybody that used to be Back in
- 0:56Speaker 3: the day. It was taboo. I mean, like, I forbid
- 0:58Speaker 3: you would have a a game during an exam period.
- 1:03Speaker 3: But everything's changed, you know, so there's so many new
- 1:07Speaker 3: ways now, I think COVID changed a lot of things.
- 1:10Speaker 3: You don't have to be present, you know, you don't
- 1:12Speaker 3: have to you know, be physically present. I should say
- 1:16Speaker 3: you have to be present if you're on zoom. But
- 1:18Speaker 3: there's so many different ways, and and you know, they
- 1:22Speaker 3: they I think they raised a number of games you
- 1:25Speaker 3: can have a few years ago, but they didn't extend
- 1:30Speaker 3: the length of the season. So you have to cram
- 1:32Speaker 3: a lot of games in in a short period of
- 1:34Speaker 3: time because we have to finish a week before the
- 1:36Speaker 3: men finish, right, right, so that our Big East Tournament
- 1:40Speaker 3: is over, and then the men's Big East Tournament starts,
- 1:44Speaker 3: so we have less time to do everything.
- 1:47Speaker 2: And it just you know, it just worked out that way.
- 1:49Speaker 1: All right, Let's go to the audience questions. Ben Darnell,
- 1:52Speaker 1: my boss. Fox Sports ninety seven nine was filleding on
- 1:55Speaker 1: both football and men's basketball broadcast with me is in
- 1:58Speaker 1: the audience roaming around.
- 1:59Speaker 4: With my coach. We have a loyal fan, Roxanne's been
- 2:03Speaker 4: a fan since nineteen eighty nine of the women's basketball program.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Wow, when Debbie and Megan showed up, Wow, absolutely.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Are you gonna play Vanderbilt in the next couple of years.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Only if Shaye wants to.
- 2:16Speaker 3: You know, whenever one of my assistants gets a job,
- 2:18Speaker 3: I tell them all the time, I said, listen, you know,
- 2:22Speaker 3: obviously you have my number. So whenever you feel like
- 2:25Speaker 3: it would be good for you to have us come
- 2:28Speaker 3: down there, just let me know and I'll be happy
- 2:31Speaker 3: to do it.
- 2:32Speaker 2: You know.
- 2:35Speaker 3: You know, every time we've played you know, and somebody's
- 2:42Speaker 3: you know, every time we've played away and one of
- 2:45Speaker 3: these is where some of our players are from or whatever,
- 2:48Speaker 3: it's generally.
- 2:50Speaker 2: The biggest crowd that they've had.
- 2:52Speaker 3: So you know, whenever she's ready, you know, I'm sure
- 2:55Speaker 3: i'll get a phone call, which'll mean she thinks she
- 2:57Speaker 3: can beat used. They've done an unbelievable job yet her
- 3:03Speaker 3: and Tom are just killing it down there, they really are.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And year old manager Kevin de Mill's doing it and.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Kevin, yeah, they all are, and Marissa is having a
- 3:10Speaker 3: good year. You know, at Wisconsin. It's not easy coaching today.
- 3:14Speaker 2: You know, Caroline's that with her anymore? Is she? No? No,
- 3:19Speaker 2: Caroline's not there anymore. Nope.
- 3:21Speaker 1: All right, Ben, what do you got, coach?
- 3:23Speaker 4: I've been wanting to ask you this personally for a
- 3:25Speaker 4: long time now. First of all, congratulations on the new record.
- 3:29Speaker 4: I know you don't care about it, but we're very
- 3:31Speaker 4: proud of you to thank you most winning as coach
- 3:33Speaker 4: in basketball history.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Good.
- 3:36Speaker 4: I think a lot of us agree. I know Bob
- 3:38Speaker 4: said this, Rob said this in our studios. Last year
- 3:41Speaker 4: may have been your best job that you have done,
- 3:43Speaker 4: with dealing with all the injuries in just the talent
- 3:45Speaker 4: desperation that you had, especially getting back to the final four.
- 3:49Speaker 4: The final four game to me top five basketball game
- 3:52Speaker 4: of my year last year. I'm sorry how it finished.
- 3:54Speaker 4: I don't want to talk about the foul or the
- 3:56Speaker 4: no foul. I've been meaning to ask you the game
- 4:00Speaker 4: prep going into that playing Caitlin Clark and Iowa. Nikamile
- 4:04Speaker 4: I thought had a Swan song game or final game
- 4:07Speaker 4: of her collegiate career. What was the motivation you gave
- 4:10Speaker 4: her for that assignment? What was the assignment? Take me
- 4:13Speaker 4: through the preparation of that week taking Iowa in the
- 4:16Speaker 4: final four?
- 4:20Speaker 3: All right, so you have to understand this before I
- 4:25Speaker 3: go any deeper into this. Paige and Nica came in
- 4:31Speaker 3: together and Aliyah, all three of them came in together
- 4:34Speaker 3: as freshmen. Okay and So Paige and Nika really established
- 4:43Speaker 3: a really close bond. So you have to understand something
- 4:51Speaker 3: about Page and Nica. They will do exactly what I
- 4:55Speaker 3: tell them after they've exhausted all other possibilities.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Okay, so when we.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Rob you know there's players you play with, right, this
- 5:12Speaker 3: is how we want to pitch to a guy. Yeah,
- 5:13Speaker 3: I'll pitch to him like that after I try to
- 5:15Speaker 3: get him out with every other pitch. You know, that's
- 5:18Speaker 3: how people think when they're that good, when they think
- 5:20Speaker 3: they're that good. So the scattering report or the game
- 5:24Speaker 3: plan that we had work perfectly. In the first half.
- 5:27Speaker 3: We had a team that's averaged ninety points a game,
- 5:28Speaker 3: and they scored twenty eight points. Yeah, can you go
- 5:32Speaker 3: wrong with that? We lost? We lost the moment in
- 5:35Speaker 3: that first half. We should have been up fifteen to
- 5:37Speaker 3: twenty points in that first alf. The defense that we
- 5:41Speaker 3: played was spectacular, and our offense we just it was
- 5:46Speaker 3: a nightmare sometimes. So we should have been up like
- 5:49Speaker 3: fifteen or twenty points. Anyway, we weren't. We came out
- 5:52Speaker 3: in the second half. I don't know who they talked
- 5:58Speaker 3: to after I talked to them at halftime, but whoever
- 6:01Speaker 3: they talked to when they got to the court, changed
- 6:04Speaker 3: the defense of mentality and it went completely the other way.
- 6:08Speaker 3: And you go, well, why what would why would that happen?
- 6:12Speaker 3: I don't know any of you have daughters. Any of
- 6:17Speaker 3: you have twelve daughters. So yes, going into the game,
- 6:24Speaker 3: we knew exactly how we wanted to defend it. We
- 6:28Speaker 3: knew exactly how we wanted to defend Caitlin. We knew,
- 6:32Speaker 3: you know, what her strengths were, where she wanted to
- 6:34Speaker 3: go with the ball, what she wanted to do. And
- 6:36Speaker 3: to be honest with you, the other kid, the big
- 6:39Speaker 3: kid running the floor catching it.
- 6:41Speaker 2: She killed us, really, Hannah was she was, yeah, you know,
- 6:44Speaker 2: she killed us? Yeah, that was that was.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:48Speaker 2: They made it.
- 6:49Speaker 3: They made some big shots and we you know, so
- 6:53Speaker 3: you know, I thought we had a great game plan.
- 6:56Speaker 3: I thought we had everything figured out, you know, but
- 7:03Speaker 3: we couldn't sustain it. We couldn't sustain the game plan.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Who couldn't sustain it? And that's uh and and and
- 7:10Speaker 3: it's crazy because that game probably got Nika drafted as
- 7:13Speaker 3: high as she got drafted because she was shocked, she
- 7:16Speaker 3: was she invited to the draft. But that game really
- 7:20Speaker 3: made everybody think, oh, I think this kick? Can you
- 7:23Speaker 3: know can play it at this high level?
- 7:26Speaker 1: All right, final segment with Gino live here on the radio.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Then we'll have a little bit of an after show
- 7:30Speaker 1: here in studio, but we'll continue last segment coming up
- 7:33Speaker 1: here on the UKON Women's Basketball Coaches Show from Learfield.
- 7:35Speaker 2: To stay with us,
