Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily body here. You are listening to five
- 0:23Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle, Big Exhale. I am about to
- 0:31Speaker 1: head home from Austin from my final I feel like
- 0:36Speaker 1: I'm saying this and it's like famous last words knock
- 0:39Speaker 1: on the wood dresser next to me from my final
- 0:42Speaker 1: work trip of the year. Wow, what a year. This
- 0:47Speaker 1: is not the episode where I reflect on twenty twenty four,
- 0:50Speaker 1: but I can say that without a doubt it has been.
- 0:56Speaker 1: It's been wild. I have been in so many different places,
- 1:01Speaker 1: from Singapore and Tokyo, oh Man, to Los Angeles and Miami, Chicago, Boston,
- 1:11Speaker 1: oh my god, the list goes on. And I was
- 1:16Speaker 1: feeling a little bit anxious about going home because I
- 1:21Speaker 1: literally do not have a single guaranteed next trip planned
- 1:28Speaker 1: and that can be a little anxiety inducing, especially because
- 1:32Speaker 1: I often am traveling for work and that is how
- 1:37Speaker 1: I make a living. And then I chose to take
- 1:40Speaker 1: a step back as I was talking about these feelings
- 1:45Speaker 1: yesterday with a friend, and I thought, what an opportunity,
- 1:51Speaker 1: this is, What an opportunity this is to be in
- 1:56Speaker 1: one place, to do some reflecting, to really be where
- 2:03Speaker 1: my feet are. When I sat down this week with
- 2:10Speaker 1: Rashida at a Leka. Her episode will be live on
- 2:14Speaker 1: the show on Monday. She said something that really resonated
- 2:19Speaker 1: with me. She talked about the importance of patients, and
- 2:25Speaker 1: she said that with patients, it is required to allow
- 2:32Speaker 1: yourself to fully surrender to the timing of the universe.
- 2:39Speaker 1: And so for me right now, I might not have
- 2:43Speaker 1: my next bazillion opportunities lined up, but what comes with
- 2:50Speaker 1: that is the opportunity to do some inventory, to ask myself,
- 2:59Speaker 1: what's us for Emily, what does Emily want next? And
- 3:04Speaker 1: use this time to my advantage, because, like I said,
- 3:10Speaker 1: it's been a non stop year and so now is
- 3:13Speaker 1: my chance to really ask myself is this serving me?
- 3:20Speaker 1: And how do I really want to move forward instead
- 3:24Speaker 1: of being a little bit on autopilot candidly. So that's
- 3:29Speaker 1: my reflection for this week is maybe when we're not
- 3:33Speaker 1: getting whatever it is that we want, and not to
- 3:34Speaker 1: say that there's specifically something that I want right now,
- 3:37Speaker 1: but when you don't get what you want, maybe you
- 3:42Speaker 1: really are getting what you need. And maybe for me
- 3:45Speaker 1: right now, what I need is this time where my
- 3:49Speaker 1: feet are in one single place, in my very own home.
- 3:57Speaker 1: My thought prompt for you this week? What do you
- 4:00Speaker 1: need right now? Think about what's going on, think about
- 4:03Speaker 1: where you're at, and ask yourself what's best for insert
- 4:09Speaker 1: your name here, So for me, what's best for Emily?
- 4:14Speaker 1: And now a listener question. Hey Emily, longtime listener. Thank
- 4:19Speaker 1: you for the incredible show you put out. I especially
- 4:22Speaker 1: look forward to five minute Fridays, a much needed pause
- 4:26Speaker 1: to reflect after a busy week. My question for you
- 4:29Speaker 1: is this, do you have any advice for making and
- 4:32Speaker 1: maintaining close friends in your thirties. I'm engaged living back
- 4:36Speaker 1: in my hometown, but most of my family and close
- 4:39Speaker 1: friends have moved away or cut ties, and the friends
- 4:42Speaker 1: we do have are paired up and less available. I
- 4:46Speaker 1: play pickleball, and I have met some great people, but it's
- 4:49Speaker 1: hard to move that connection to off the court. Any advice, thanks? Yeah,
- 4:55Speaker 1: I agree with you, this is definitely a challenging thing.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I feel like the older you get, the harder it
- 5:01Speaker 1: is to meet new people and really solidify those relationships.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I appreciate what you pointed out that you play pickleball,
- 5:10Speaker 1: because I would say that hobbies are the easiest way
- 5:15Speaker 1: to break that barrier, right to open yourself up through
- 5:21Speaker 1: activity into new relationships. If it doesn't feel like that
- 5:26Speaker 1: is clicking, then ask yourself, what's something else that could
- 5:30Speaker 1: be really fun for me. Maybe you want to try pottery,
- 5:34Speaker 1: or maybe you go to a co working space and
- 5:39Speaker 1: there are people the co working space that you can
- 5:42Speaker 1: go out of your way to meet. Or perhaps it's
- 5:47Speaker 1: simply opening yourself up to a different online community. There
- 5:52Speaker 1: are so many different online communities that give you access
- 5:56Speaker 1: to individuals in your surrounding area, and then through that
- 6:00Speaker 1: you can make a decision on whether or not these
- 6:03Speaker 1: are the kind of people that you actually want to
- 6:05Speaker 1: meet up with. IRL. What I would say though about
- 6:10Speaker 1: making friends as you get older is that you have
- 6:15Speaker 1: this really amazing chance to get comfortable with the uncomfortable.
- 6:22Speaker 1: So it won't be easy, but generally speaking, anything worth
- 6:26Speaker 1: having isn't. So take a risk on you. I know
- 6:31Speaker 1: that you have so much to offer whoever it is
- 6:34Speaker 1: that you make their acquaintance right, and that also maybe
- 6:40Speaker 1: it's gonna take some time. You might meet someone and
- 6:43Speaker 1: think it could be great and then realize you don't vibe.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Friendship is just like forming a romantic relationship. It's got
- 6:49Speaker 1: to feel good, it's got to feel like you're in alignment.
- 6:53Speaker 1: And you said in your question any advice for making
- 6:55Speaker 1: or maintaining close friends. I would say when it comes
- 6:59Speaker 1: to maintaining just everyone wants to feel like their priority,
- 7:03Speaker 1: and so that might not be guaranteed constantly. You might
- 7:07Speaker 1: not always be able to give the same bandwidth to
- 7:09Speaker 1: your relationships. But reiterating that you care and planning ahead
- 7:15Speaker 1: to provide time for that relationship, to nurture that relationship,
- 7:19Speaker 1: knowing that for the right people, making that time won't
- 7:24Speaker 1: feel like a hassle. It'll feel like something that excites you.
- 7:28Speaker 1: It will feel that special word in alignment. I hope
- 7:33Speaker 1: it helps. And if you have a listener question that
