- 0:00Speaker 1: All right cap it no cap and this one's presented
- 0:09Speaker 1: by lids i got my lids box it's covered in
- 0:11Speaker 1: books right now so uh all right we're going to
- 0:13Speaker 1: go through some categories here and we are going to
- 0:17Speaker 1: pick up pick a lid i guess for which team
- 0:20Speaker 1: we think has the winner in each category okay so
- 0:24Speaker 1: we're going to start and this is by the way
- 0:25Speaker 1: the dodgers and the brewers series so EK, we're going
- 0:29Speaker 1: to go through this, and we're going to go topic
- 0:31Speaker 1: by topic, and we're going to make you pick a lid.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I'll pick a lid with you, which team has the
- 0:35Speaker 1: best one. And then at the end, since you already
- 0:37Speaker 1: gave your prediction, and we know that you picked the
- 0:39Speaker 1: Dodgers because you hate the Brewers, then I get to
- 0:41Speaker 1: pick mine, and I don't even know why we're doing
- 0:43Speaker 1: it because since I hate the Dodgers, I mean the
- 0:45Speaker 1: Brewers so much, I don't even know why I'm wasting
- 0:49Speaker 1: my time and everyone's time because we all know I'm
- 0:50Speaker 1: going to pick the Dodgers. So here are the categories,
- 0:53Speaker 1: all right? We're going to start with this. Best starting
- 0:55Speaker 1: pitching of the two teams, Brewers or Dodgers? One through four. Depth.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It's a depth for me. And Mizorowski's great. Logan Henderson's great. Yamamoto, Schubel, Glasnow, Snell.
- 1:07Speaker 1: We picked the Dodgers, by the way, for everybody listening. Yeah, sorry.
- 1:10Speaker 1: We both picked the Dodgers.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Why?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yamamoto, Schubel, Glasnow, Snell. Sorry. Mizorowski's nice. Gasser's nice. Logan
- 1:18Speaker 1: Henderson's nice. Whoever else they picked to start is nice.
- 1:21Speaker 1: But it ain't these four names. So for me, Dodgers
- 1:24Speaker 1: went easy.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Not just four names. Like, they're not even– these dudes
- 1:28Speaker 3: are in their prime. So it's not just names. It's
- 1:31Speaker 3: not like they're like– it's not like we're running out
- 1:32Speaker 3: Max Scherzer and Verlander after 40 years old who are
- 1:36Speaker 3: still pretty good. But these dudes are in their prime
- 1:42Speaker 3: and it's starting pitching. Starting pitching's– that's why they won
- 1:46Speaker 3: last year because the starting pitchers went into the bullpen
- 1:48Speaker 3: and also won the game for them.
- 1:51Speaker 1: True. True. So we both agree on that one. All right.
- 1:54Speaker 1: By the way, Scooble versus Miz, if that happens, is
- 1:56Speaker 1: going to be epic because it could have been Scooble
- 1:59Speaker 1: or Miz then Scooble for the Brewers, but they got
- 2:01Speaker 1: Logan Henderson instead. So good job, Brewers.
- 2:05Speaker 3: You listened to the show yesterday. I'm glad you were
- 2:07Speaker 3: listening on your day off, AJ, on your travel day.
- 2:10Speaker 3: I did not, but I've had that opinion for a while.
- 2:12Speaker 3: All right, let's go to the bullpen. Best bullpen, Dodgers
- 2:15Speaker 3: or Brewers?
- 2:17Speaker 1: I mean, not even close. Not even close. Same, Brewers.
- 2:22Speaker 3: We both picked Brewers. It's the best logo in the game.
- 2:26Speaker 3: It's the most underrated logo. It's got the M and
- 2:28Speaker 3: the B for Milwaukee baseball. And it is the Brewers.
- 2:32Speaker 3: And it might not be just the bullpen. And I
- 2:36Speaker 3: say that because I'm not saying it's a rotation. I'm
- 2:39Speaker 3: saying when you think about bullpen, you think about like
- 2:42Speaker 3: the three-headed monster or the guys that they're going to
- 2:44Speaker 3: go to in the big spots.
- 2:47Speaker 2: They have dudes everywhere.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Everywhere.
- 2:50Speaker 3: The fact that Aaron Ashby hasn't, Latched on as a starter,
- 2:55Speaker 3: but he can give you three solid innings at any time.
- 2:58Speaker 3: The fact that Uribe, yeah, he almost gave up the
- 3:01Speaker 3: home run to Manny Machado, but he didn't. He's throwing
- 3:05Speaker 3: 99 with sink. And what Trevor McGill has done, if
- 3:08Speaker 3: you look at his numbers, it really doesn't show what
- 3:11Speaker 3: he has done since his slow start. He was on
- 3:15Speaker 3: the show when I was out in Milwaukee for our
- 3:19Speaker 3: alumni day, and it was– He.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Had struggled to start.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I think it was his first 18 innings it was
- 3:25Speaker 3: struggle bus, or maybe it was his first six innings.
- 3:28Speaker 3: He has been almost unhittable. So they have the three-headed monster,
- 3:32Speaker 3: but they also have depth. JoJo Romero. They have D.L.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Hall giving them length. They have a bunch of starters
- 3:38Speaker 3: that really haven't thrown that are down there, and Patrick
- 3:41Speaker 3: and Harrison. It is incredible, and I don't think this
- 3:46Speaker 3: is even close. I think it's Brewers 10 times out
- 3:49Speaker 3: of 10.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I won't argue with you on that one. I'm taking
- 3:53Speaker 1: the Brewers also. They had the best bullpen ERA in
- 3:56Speaker 1: the league this year. People don't even know that. They
- 3:58Speaker 1: look at the Padres or someone else and say, yeah,
- 4:01Speaker 1: the Dodgers bullpen. I know Edwin Diaz looked nice against
- 4:03Speaker 1: the Braves, but he has struggled all year. So I
- 4:05Speaker 1: know Tanner Scott and some of those other guys are
- 4:07Speaker 1: coming back. But yeah, for me, this is easy. And
- 4:09Speaker 1: the thing I like most about the Brewers bullpen is
- 4:11Speaker 1: the flexibility they have and the way Murph uses them.
- 4:14Speaker 1: If you talk to Pat Murphy, he'll say, guys, we
- 4:16Speaker 1: need guys that can give us more than one inning, right?
- 4:19Speaker 1: So that's Ashby. That's Drohan. That's Patrick if they need it.
- 4:23Speaker 1: That's whoever they throw out there can give them more.
- 4:25Speaker 1: It sends a teller, right? They can give them more
- 4:27Speaker 1: than one inning if they need them to, and they're
- 4:29Speaker 1: used to doing that. And Murph loves this because he
- 4:32Speaker 1: can play the mix-and-match game all he wants. So, yeah,
- 4:36Speaker 1: I think this is pretty easy for the Brewers. All right, now,
- 4:39Speaker 1: biggest home field advantage, Cratch. Who do you got, Brewers
- 4:41Speaker 1: or Dodgers?
- 4:44Speaker 2: Milwaukee again. Same. Milwaukee again.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I was there.
- 4:48Speaker 3: If you've ever been to Dodger Stadium, incredible environment. The
- 4:52Speaker 3: speakers are awesome. The fans, I love the bleacher. The
- 4:56Speaker 3: bleacher peeps, like all that stuff.
- 4:59Speaker 1: It's cool.
- 5:00Speaker 2: It's older.
- 5:01Speaker 3: It's a huge stadium. It goes way, way up. It's
- 5:04Speaker 3: got the ninth deck way up there. Traffic's terrible. Nothing
- 5:09Speaker 3: is like how close the fans are in Milwaukee. American
- 5:14Speaker 3: Family Field, Miller Park before that. The fans, the stadium
- 5:18Speaker 3: just goes straight up, and it feels like everybody is
- 5:21Speaker 3: right on top of you. And the lower bowl is
- 5:24Speaker 3: not that big, so then those upper decks are closer
- 5:28Speaker 3: to you, and it just– it is– the cheeseheads are out,
- 5:32Speaker 3: and they.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Are an incredible, incredible fan base. True. I was there
- 5:38Speaker 1: this past week. Amazing, amazing– Fans, their towels, they had
- 5:44Speaker 1: everything going. The roof's closed. It gets loud as heck.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Not as loud as San Diego, but it gets really loud.
- 5:49Speaker 1: They're passionate. They're there from the first to the ninth inning.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Plus the roof and the shadows and all that can
- 5:54Speaker 1: play a part. I know they're later games, but they
- 5:56Speaker 1: can still play a part. It's a little bit different
- 5:59Speaker 1: ballpark than what the Dodgers are used to. But, yeah,
- 6:02Speaker 1: for me, home field advantage goes to the Dodgers. I mean,
- 6:05Speaker 1: excuse me, to the Brewers. It wasn't as loud as
- 6:08Speaker 1: San Diego. It wasn't as loud as San Diego, but
- 6:10Speaker 1: it was loud. I've never experienced it. It was the
- 6:11Speaker 1: loudest playoff. place that I've ever played in, without a doubt.
- 6:17Speaker 1: And David Freeze, who played in quite a few big games, St. Louis,
- 6:23Speaker 1: the big hits he had in St. Louis, he said
- 6:26Speaker 1: it was the loudest that he had ever heard. Now,
- 6:31Speaker 1: it's not fair because the roof's closed. Even when they
- 6:34Speaker 1: open the windows up in center field, the roof is
- 6:36Speaker 1: still closed, so it's always going to be louder. But
- 6:39Speaker 1: the roof opened, the windows shut, whatever it is, He
- 6:44Speaker 1: said it was the loudest he had ever been, and
- 6:46Speaker 1: he's been in quite a few big spots. Yeah, agreed, agreed.
- 6:51Speaker 1: All right, strongest lineup, Brewers, Dodgers. Stronger lineup. L.A.
- 6:58Speaker 3: All the way because I'm going back to Cali strictly
- 7:02Speaker 3: for the weather.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Okay, so this is really hard for me, okay? I'm
- 7:06Speaker 1: actually going to go Brewers, okay? Okay. I'm going to
- 7:09Speaker 1: go Brewers. And I'm going to go Brewers for one
- 7:13Speaker 1: reason and one reason only. I know the Dodgers have Shohei,
- 7:17Speaker 1: and they have Freddie, and they have Mookie, and they
- 7:19Speaker 1: have Max, and they have Will Smith. But those guys
- 7:21Speaker 1: haven't hit. Shohei especially has not been good. Kyle Tucker,
- 7:24Speaker 1: he's actually done okay. But maybe it's biased because I
- 7:28Speaker 1: just watched the Brewers play. Churrio's a great player. Bryce
- 7:31Speaker 1: Terang goes the other way. He's really good. Contreras loves
- 7:33Speaker 1: the big moment. Jake Bowers had unbelievable bats. Christian Yelich
- 7:37Speaker 1: looked like he was back against the Padres. Cooper Pratt
- 7:39Speaker 1: made some big hits. I mean, take Luis Lara out,
- 7:42Speaker 1: put Sal Freelick in there. He looked nice. Garrett Mitchell
- 7:45Speaker 1: figured it out in game four against the Padres. Joey
- 7:48Speaker 1: Ortiz can bunt. He can get some hits. I just
- 7:51Speaker 1: think one through nine, it's all about pressure for the Brewers.
- 7:54Speaker 1: It's all about pressure. They can steal. They can bunt.
- 7:57Speaker 1: They can hit and run. They get on base. It
- 8:00Speaker 1: seemed like every time the Padres scored, and I know
- 8:01Speaker 1: it's a different animal with the Dodgers, every time the
- 8:04Speaker 1: Padres scored, it was first and second and no outs
- 8:06Speaker 1: for the Brewers in four pitches. And you're like, wow,
- 8:08Speaker 1: what just happened? The Padres are rolling. Oh, no, it's
- 8:11Speaker 1: faces loaded for the Brewers. There were six pitches in
- 8:12Speaker 1: the next inning. So I think they're just deeper than
- 8:16Speaker 1: the Dodgers with not as big of names as what
- 8:18Speaker 1: the Dodgers have.
- 8:20Speaker 3: And they, I mean, yeah, I mean, you mentioned it,
- 8:23Speaker 3: the whole Padres series, they were facing good pitching, like
- 8:26Speaker 3: good pitching. They're going to face good pitching again. They're
- 8:29Speaker 3: going to need to make adjustments against each different starting
- 8:31Speaker 3: pitcher because they're all so different. I would say this,
- 8:35Speaker 3: your question was, which is the strongest lineup. And I'm
- 8:39Speaker 3: going to go with the Dodgers as the strongest lineup
- 8:43Speaker 3: and the Brewers as the toughest. I think being a
- 8:46Speaker 3: tough lineup is different than being a strong lineup. If
- 8:50Speaker 3: Freddie Freeman comes into a series and he had one
- 8:53Speaker 3: extra base hit in the last month before that series,
- 8:57Speaker 3: and then he does what he did in this past
- 8:59Speaker 3: series to the Braves, like That's big damage. Shohei Otani,
- 9:04Speaker 3: whether he's leading off, hitting second behind Mookie, hitting fifth,
- 9:08Speaker 3: whatever it is, the chance for this team to go
- 9:12Speaker 3: one through nine and do damage is crazy. Because I
- 9:16Speaker 3: look at the bottom of their order and I go,
- 9:18Speaker 3: Andy Pajas has been terrible in the playoffs. And then
- 9:21Speaker 3: he has the last game that he has. Tommy Edmund,
- 9:25Speaker 3: I'm never worried about Tommy Edmund getting big hits. Oh, wait,
- 9:28Speaker 3: he's got a trophy on his mantle that says, And
- 9:32Speaker 3: LCS MVP, like every single dude in this lineup. And
- 9:36Speaker 3: this is why I'm going to choose. They are a
- 9:39Speaker 3: stronger lineup, but I think they can be pitched to,
- 9:43Speaker 3: which the Brewers have really good pitching and the Brewers
- 9:47Speaker 3: are a tougher lineup. They're just not going to always
- 9:50Speaker 3: do that.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Like, okay.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Any one of these guys can hit a three run digger.
- 9:56Speaker 1: That's fair. That's fair. Okay. I understand. I understand why
- 9:59Speaker 1: it is. All right. Last but not least, Kratz, I
- 10:01Speaker 1: know you picked the Dodgers yesterday to win the series.
- 10:04Speaker 1: So I have to pick who's going to win the series.
- 10:07Speaker 1: It's a tough choice for me. Just play the hat game.
- 10:10Speaker 1: I'm going to do three hat money. Don't look here.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Don't look there. And I'm going with Brewers. I'm going
- 10:20Speaker 1: with the Brewers. Damn it, all you Brewers people think
- 10:22Speaker 1: I hate you. I'm going. I can't put the hat
- 10:24Speaker 1: on because I have my other hat on, but I'm
- 10:25Speaker 1: putting my Brewers hat on here. I'll even shrink down
- 10:27Speaker 1: so you can see my Brewers hat. Okay. Yes, I'm
- 10:30Speaker 1: going Brewers. I picked the Brewers before the whole playoff
- 10:33Speaker 1: started to win the whole damn thing. So all you
- 10:36Speaker 1: people that thought I was rooting for the Padres, you
- 10:38Speaker 1: guys are fools, and you guys don't know me very
- 10:40Speaker 1: well because I will not change my pick. Even though
- 10:43Speaker 1: I've had the Dodgers on my power rankings one from
- 10:46Speaker 1: the entire year, I still think the Brewers win this series,
- 10:49Speaker 1: and I think it's about damn time. Not only do
- 10:52Speaker 1: they get to the World Series, they win the World Series,
- 10:55Speaker 1: and they make Milwaukee proud. And all you Brewer fans
- 10:58Speaker 1: can stop freaking hating on me. And also, by the way,
- 11:00Speaker 1: I love Pat Murphy. I love Dave Roberts. They coach together.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Dave Roberts was Pat Murphy's bench coach with the Padres 2015.
- 11:07Speaker 1: So it's time for the old master to get his
- 11:10Speaker 1: little pad one, say shoe fly. I'm finally getting one.
- 11:13Speaker 1: So crew crew wins it. I think it's going to
- 11:16Speaker 1: be probably at least six or six, if not seven games,
- 11:19Speaker 1: it's going to be an unbelievable series. And I can't wait.
- 11:24Speaker 2: You got to choose.
- 11:25Speaker 1: You can't say six or seven. Why not 6-7? Listen,
- 11:30Speaker 1: I'm a company guy, so I'll say 7 just so
- 11:33Speaker 1: Fox is happy. They got seven games out of the
- 11:35Speaker 1: Dodgers before they go to Cancun, as David always says.
- 11:39Speaker 3: I'd love to see this end in 6. For some reason,
- 11:43Speaker 3: I feel like it'll end in 6. It's going to
- 11:47Speaker 3: be awesome, and I'll be honest, I would much rather
- 11:50Speaker 3: the reseeding. You pick who you want to play. I
- 11:52Speaker 3: want each of these teams to pick who they want
- 11:54Speaker 3: to play from the American League so they can play
- 11:56Speaker 3: in the World Series.
- 11:58Speaker 1: The odds?
- 11:59Speaker 3: The odds right now? For the National League to win,
- 12:03Speaker 3: I saw it yesterday, minus 200 for the National League
- 12:06Speaker 3: to win the World Series.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Okay. Who are you taking from the American League to
- 12:13Speaker 1: beat an American League team?
- 12:15Speaker 2: No, I agree, but I'm saying.
- 12:16Speaker 1: What American League team are you taking to win?
- 12:19Speaker 2: Those kinds of numbers. I'm not.
- 12:21Speaker 3: I'm not– it's not– yeah, we're not even going to
- 12:23Speaker 3: get to that right now. It's not even close. This
- 12:26Speaker 3: is the World Series, and I am so for it.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Sunday can't come early enough.
- 12:32Speaker 1: True, true. Hey, there's a big game tomorrow night too,
- 12:34Speaker 1: so let's not forget about them White Sox. All right,
- 12:37Speaker 1: thank you. Sorry, Brewers fans, to disappoint you that I
- 12:40Speaker 1: picked your team. Capit is presented by Lids, your home

- 12:59Speaker 1: beat writer, Kurt Hoagie.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Hoagie.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Kurt Hoag. All right, we're back. We're back. Host of
- 13:09Speaker 1: Brewers Territory. Let's welcome him on from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Sentinel.
- 13:14Speaker 1: co-host of Brewer Territory and rocking the Foul Territory hat.
- 13:17Speaker 1: We love it. And also, by the way, I can
- 13:20Speaker 1: call him whatever I want because he walked right by
- 13:22Speaker 1: me multiple times, didn't speak. So now, Kurt, you're Kurt
- 13:26Speaker 1: Hogg from now on because you haven't earned the right
- 13:28Speaker 1: for me to speak your name properly after you walked
- 13:30Speaker 1: by me numerous times. And I had to speak with
- 13:34Speaker 1: Adam McAlvey many times because Kurt Hoagie walked right past
- 13:37Speaker 1: me and didn't speak. Not even a wave.
- 13:39Speaker 2: I said hi to you in the stairwell. What do
- 13:41Speaker 2: you mean? I said, what's up, AJ?
- 13:44Speaker 1: I said, hi, Kurt, as you walk by. And then
- 13:46Speaker 1: you're like, oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, hey, hey, how
- 13:49Speaker 1: are you?
- 13:50Speaker 2: You turn that corner, you turn that corner, and then
- 13:53Speaker 2: there's AJ.
- 13:56Speaker 3: It's because Kurt's freaky tall. Like, you wouldn't think it
- 13:59Speaker 3: until you meet him.
- 14:00Speaker 1: He's freaky tall.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Like, so he sees above everybody, and he's like, I'm.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Only going to say hi to the tall people. He
- 14:07Speaker 1: looked down upon me, literally from above the stairs.
- 14:10Speaker 2: He looked down on me.
- 14:11Speaker 1: They look down upon me.
- 14:15Speaker 2: I don't know where this came from. I don't know.
- 14:16Speaker 2: I'm being slandered on my own network.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Kurt, I feel for you because I've been slandered for
- 14:22Speaker 1: the last week by every Brewer fan.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I was going to say, I'm surprised you're talking Brewers
- 14:27Speaker 2: when you hate them. I was told you hate them.
- 14:30Speaker 1: I mean, that's all I did was hated the Brewers
- 14:32Speaker 1: for a week. I mean, gosh, it was just like, man,
- 14:34Speaker 1: those Padres are the best. Go Padres. Go Fathers. Yeah, no,
- 14:39Speaker 1: not at all. I mean, as you know, Kurt, I
- 14:41Speaker 1: love the Brewers, actually, and I love Pat Murphy, and
- 14:44Speaker 1: I love this team. And what I saw from them
- 14:47Speaker 1: in these last four games against– A very game San
- 14:49Speaker 1: Diego team just impressed me more. How impressed were you by, listen,
- 14:54Speaker 1: I know they won some games and I know this
- 14:56Speaker 1: and that, but the way they battled, the way they
- 14:58Speaker 1: came back from adversity, falling down, the way they beat
- 15:01Speaker 1: Mason Miller, right? Just how impressed were you by this
- 15:04Speaker 1: Brewers team in general?
- 15:06Speaker 2: I mean, it was essentially what they did all season
- 15:09Speaker 2: if you look at it. They put guys on base constantly.
- 15:12Speaker 2: They have like 55, 50-something runners on base. I know
- 15:15Speaker 2: they didn't score a ton of runs, in the series,
- 15:17Speaker 2: but they constantly had good at-bats. They got a little
- 15:20Speaker 2: unlucky on offense, really, and the pitching was absolutely outstanding.
- 15:24Speaker 2: That's not a huge surprise, but when you look at
- 15:26Speaker 2: it and you see it was like, okay, Miz was okay.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Logan Henderson was solid five innings, but really it was
- 15:33Speaker 2: the collective effort. Robert Gasser pitched well. I mean, the bullpen,
- 15:37Speaker 2: you see it right there. Their ERA was 1.8 in
- 15:40Speaker 2: this series. That Padres team was playing as hot As
- 15:45Speaker 2: anyone in baseball, hotter than anyone in baseball for the
- 15:47Speaker 2: last two months, that lineup has a bunch of guys
- 15:49Speaker 2: swinging it. They held Machado down until the end. They
- 15:52Speaker 2: held Tatis down until the end. And they just played
- 15:56Speaker 2: their butts off, and they did it in their style,
- 15:59Speaker 2: which was impressive and, more importantly, encouraging, I would say,
- 16:04Speaker 2: when you look at, all right, now they've got these
- 16:06Speaker 2: big boys coming up on Sunday in Milwaukee.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Haven't they always won in the playoffs with their style?
- 16:12Speaker 3: Even back to 2018 when I was here, Every time we.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Won, it was the Brewers' style. It was the way
- 16:19Speaker 1: that we won.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Does it make you change the narrative of how it's
- 16:25Speaker 3: going to be in the next series?
- 16:27Speaker 2: Well, last year, if you think about it, Kratzy, that
- 16:29Speaker 2: Cubs series, they won with a bunch of homers.
- 16:32Speaker 1: And then I.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Don't even know what style they played with against the Dodgers.
- 16:37Speaker 2: It just wasn't good. So I don't know if it
- 16:41Speaker 2: changes the narrative. It makes you more optimistic going into
- 16:44Speaker 2: this series. against the Dodgers. But I think you should
- 16:48Speaker 2: at least be a little bit encouraged by the fact that,
- 16:51Speaker 2: you know, they hit the ball hard. They put guys
- 16:54Speaker 2: on base. They are not going to hit a ton
- 16:56Speaker 2: of homers, which is obviously the question because you can
- 16:59Speaker 2: have that series where you just leave everyone on base because,
- 17:02Speaker 2: you know, you're not hitting it over the fence. But
- 17:04Speaker 2: I was generally encouraged by the offense, especially in the
- 17:07Speaker 2: last three games, even though they did not score a ton.
- 17:10Speaker 2: You could easily told me, you know, they get a
- 17:12Speaker 2: couple bloops to fall in one of those games and
- 17:14Speaker 2: they score a Six, seven runs, just like AJ was
- 17:18Speaker 2: saying earlier, six, seven runs. And then they win going away.
- 17:23Speaker 2: But they played their style of game. They won game
- 17:26Speaker 2: four with defense. They got clutch hits in game two.
- 17:31Speaker 2: So I feel optimistic generally about where the offense is,
- 17:35Speaker 2: even though I know they scored like three runs a
- 17:36Speaker 2: game in the series.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Well, I mean, the pitching for the San Diego was
- 17:41Speaker 1: pretty sick, too. I mean, both teams pitched their asses
- 17:44Speaker 1: off in this series. No matter who they brought in,
- 17:46Speaker 1: it was like, whoa, another. And they got made pitches.
- 17:49Speaker 1: They made pitches. That's what was crazy. No matter who
- 17:50Speaker 1: they brought in, everybody made pitches. So the slogan for
- 17:53Speaker 1: the Brewers this postseason is, win our way. What would
- 17:57Speaker 1: you say their way is? Because they did hit– Jackson
- 18:00Speaker 1: Churio hit a huge homer. William Contreras hit some homers
- 18:03Speaker 1: for them, right? They did hit some huge home runs.
- 18:06Speaker 1: So what is the Brewer way? What is our way
- 18:09Speaker 1: if you're a Brewers fan? And this isn't for Brewers fans. Kurt,
- 18:12Speaker 1: this is for people that haven't ever really watched the
- 18:14Speaker 1: Brewers until the Padres and now the Dodgers series.
- 18:17Speaker 2: I don't think the Brewers are this, like, you know, bunt,
- 18:22Speaker 2: small-ball team necessarily. Like, they don't have a ton of
- 18:24Speaker 2: home runs if you look at their season numbers. I
- 18:28Speaker 2: think their way and their method is controlling the strike zone,
- 18:33Speaker 2: a really tough at-bat where you have to come to them,
- 18:37Speaker 2: constantly having guys on base, giving themselves chance after chance.
- 18:42Speaker 2: And then taking care of a lot of the little
- 18:44Speaker 2: things in the base running and in the field, which frankly,
- 18:46Speaker 2: I think they didn't do that very well in the
- 18:49Speaker 2: Padres series. I know Mitchell made that catch in game four.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I know there was a couple other good defensive plays.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Jackson Churio reacting to a ball off a wire was,
- 18:57Speaker 2: I don't think it was talked enough about the fact
- 18:59Speaker 2: that he caught the ball. He adjusted to it and
- 19:02Speaker 2: made the play because that ball is live. But I
- 19:04Speaker 2: didn't think the Brewers played great defense in the series.
- 19:07Speaker 2: So they're not going to be able to play like that.
- 19:11Speaker 2: beat the Dodgers. I didn't think they won their way
- 19:13Speaker 2: for the most part against the Padres. They just, they
- 19:16Speaker 2: did enough of the things that they do well and
- 19:19Speaker 2: scored enough against that really good lineup. So they're going
- 19:22Speaker 2: to have to do those little things and continue to
- 19:25Speaker 2: have excellent at-bats, whether, you know, Scooble's going to try
- 19:27Speaker 2: to get you to chase that changeup. You can't chase.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Blake Snell's gambit is getting you to chase his stuff.
- 19:33Speaker 2: They can't chase. Like that's what it's going to boil
- 19:35Speaker 2: down to because frankly, they have to win their way.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Unless they have maybe two games in the series where
- 19:42Speaker 2: they hit three homers. And I just don't think that's
- 19:46Speaker 2: very likely.
- 19:47Speaker 3: The Brewers, you're talking about their defense. They've made more
- 19:50Speaker 3: errors than any team in the postseason. Is that concerning?
- 19:55Speaker 3: Is that a concerning thing? Is there pressure there? Is
- 20:00Speaker 3: there the, Murph's going to yell at me? Like, I
- 20:03Speaker 3: get it. Oh, they're fine in the regular season. But
- 20:06Speaker 3: now it's like, this is who we got and we're
- 20:09Speaker 3: going with it. Is there a concern moving forward with
- 20:12Speaker 3: how their defense has played most of the time?
- 20:16Speaker 2: I don't think their defense is necessarily like this, you know,
- 20:19Speaker 2: best in baseball unit that they've been in years past.
- 20:21Speaker 2: There's a couple more weak spots, but I do think
- 20:24Speaker 2: on the whole, it is a good defense because I
- 20:28Speaker 2: got the sense a little bit early in game four,
- 20:30Speaker 2: they're playing a little tight and then that was kind
- 20:32Speaker 2: of erased. So I wouldn't say I'm worried about it.
- 20:34Speaker 2: You know, they have these 12 straight losses on the
- 20:38Speaker 2: road in the playoffs and they come out and win
- 20:40Speaker 2: a really tight game in San Diego. Like this team,
- 20:43Speaker 2: the way they've played the whole year, I'm not going
- 20:46Speaker 2: to be concerned about their ability to bounce back and
- 20:49Speaker 2: play solid defense against the Dodgers. There's a couple of
- 20:53Speaker 2: weaker spots for sure on this defensive lineup. But on
- 20:58Speaker 2: the whole, their ability to respond, their ability to bounce
- 21:01Speaker 2: back and play the way that they've played all year
- 21:04Speaker 2: has been remarkable. And so that's what feels different about
- 21:08Speaker 2: this club in particular. So I would say I'm only
- 21:12Speaker 2: like maybe a 3 or 4 out of 10 on
- 21:15Speaker 2: the concern about the defense. It's only that high just
- 21:19Speaker 2: because there was just some weird plays in that series.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Could we be having you on this show? Because the
- 21:28Speaker 3: Brewers lost the series. Based on how close it was.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Or did you feel like the Brewers were clearly the
- 21:37Speaker 3: better team? And while all were close games, they dominated
- 21:42Speaker 3: the series like you need to to win the series.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. We could be doing a Brewers post-mortem right
- 21:49Speaker 2: now and talking about what's wrong with this team. Why
- 21:51Speaker 2: can't they win in the postseason? I mean, you would
- 21:54Speaker 2: have to be, you would have to be foolish to
- 21:56Speaker 2: say that there was no world in which the Padres
- 21:58Speaker 2: win this in four, or at the very least we're
- 22:00Speaker 2: going to game five tonight in Milwaukee, a ball hits
- 22:04Speaker 2: a wire. I thought it was going foul, but that
- 22:07Speaker 2: hit a wire, go and play. Ty France is a
- 22:09Speaker 2: good hitter too. Like if it goes fall, he got
- 22:12Speaker 2: another crack at it and something could bad could have
- 22:15Speaker 2: happened for the Brewers there.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Jackson.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Sure. I mean, you got to walk off against Mason Miller. Sure.
- 22:18Speaker 2: They earned it. They earned it, but that game could
- 22:20Speaker 2: easily go a different direction. If you hit that ball
- 22:22Speaker 2: five feet to the, to the right. And then, you know,
- 22:26Speaker 2: Manny Machado just misses a game tying Homer. So like the,
- 22:29Speaker 2: the margins in this series were so narrow because they
- 22:32Speaker 2: played both teams played at such a high level, but
- 22:34Speaker 2: absolutely the Padres could have won that series. I do
- 22:37Speaker 2: think though, like, you know, you, you watch, you watch
- 22:39Speaker 2: soccer and they talk about the team, they deserve to win.
- 22:43Speaker 2: They had it coming. I thought the Brewers were the
- 22:46Speaker 2: better team on the whole. Like they hit the ball harder.
- 22:50Speaker 2: They had more guys on base and, They their defense
- 22:54Speaker 2: was worse, but on the whole, it felt like, you know,
- 22:57Speaker 2: like their runs were like they had them coming and
- 23:01Speaker 2: the Padres got some really unlucky bounces. But I felt like,
- 23:04Speaker 2: you know, you think about that game five, the Brewers
- 23:05Speaker 2: had a lot of chances to crack it open and
- 23:07Speaker 2: hit balls hard right at guys. And that's kind of
- 23:10Speaker 2: how the series felt.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Kurt, I mean, when we talked to the Brewers guys,
- 23:15Speaker 1: they just kept saying over and over, we haven't played
- 23:16Speaker 1: our best baseball, whether it was Murph, whether it was Yelly,
- 23:20Speaker 1: whoever you talk to on that team, they were like,
- 23:21Speaker 1: we haven't played our best baseball. We haven't played our
- 23:23Speaker 1: best baseball. They're going to need their best baseball here
- 23:26Speaker 1: for the next seven games. However this Dodger series picks up,
- 23:31Speaker 1: it's Miz for sure game one, Henderson for sure game two.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Do we know who game three is going to be?
- 23:36Speaker 1: Is it going to be one of those Murph all
- 23:38Speaker 1: hands on deck kind of things? In game four, Gasser, Drohan, Patrick, D.L. Hall,
- 23:45Speaker 1: whoever's ready for three and four, is that how they're
- 23:48Speaker 1: going to play this? And also, by the way, no
- 23:50Speaker 1: one's better at this than Pat Murphy. Pat Murphy has
- 23:52Speaker 1: set up his guys to go multiple innings during the
- 23:55Speaker 1: regular season, so now they're here, and Ashby can give
- 23:58Speaker 1: you three. Whoever you bring in from the bullpen, whether
- 24:01Speaker 1: it's Patrick or D.L. Hall, they can give you multiple innings.
- 24:04Speaker 1: I mean, it's been a masterful class by Murphy and
- 24:06Speaker 1: the Brewers how they've set this team up.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, first I'll, I'll, I'll address the later part
- 24:12Speaker 2: of your question there with Murph. It felt like for
- 24:16Speaker 2: so much of the year, you know, when you're following
- 24:17Speaker 2: baseball every day, like, you know, media or, or the, the,
- 24:21Speaker 2: the real big fans, like I'm sure if I'm listening does,
- 24:24Speaker 2: there's so many little things over the course of the year,
- 24:26Speaker 2: like you just want to nitpick them. And then we
- 24:29Speaker 2: get to this point where I'm just like, I I'll
- 24:32Speaker 2: criticize a move and then it'll work perfectly for, for
- 24:36Speaker 2: Pat Murphy. And it's like, well, How are all these
- 24:39Speaker 2: moves working? It feels like I'm just not even going
- 24:42Speaker 2: to try to criticize it anymore because it's constantly working.
- 24:46Speaker 2: And along those lines, I would think Robert Gasser makes
- 24:49Speaker 2: a lot of sense for game three. He pitched great
- 24:51Speaker 2: down the stretch. And then I think that Padres game
- 24:53Speaker 2: was a huge test. Great lineup, great atmosphere. And that
- 24:56Speaker 2: place was rocking. 47,000 people. The team that drafted him
- 25:00Speaker 2: and they traded him. Like there could have been so
- 25:03Speaker 2: many things to get too juiced up and he settled
- 25:05Speaker 2: it down. got through four innings. I mean, AJ, man,
- 25:08Speaker 2: what was it? What was Joey Ortiz doing in the
- 25:09Speaker 2: first inning? He had a double play. I don't know.
- 25:12Speaker 1: I don't have any idea. I don't forget how many
- 25:15Speaker 1: outs there were. I mean, he said.
- 25:16Speaker 2: He didn't though. He said that because he ran toward
- 25:19Speaker 2: the mound.
- 25:20Speaker 1: El Gary was wearing him out in the dugout. We
- 25:24Speaker 1: showed it multiple times. And he said he just, I
- 25:26Speaker 1: think he was like, I was being smart. I was
- 25:28Speaker 1: being smart. And it didn't cost him. So I guess
- 25:31Speaker 1: he was being smart.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I do not. Personally, I think that using your
- 25:37Speaker 2: God-given arm throwing to first base would have been pretty
- 25:40Speaker 2: smart there with one of the slower runners in baseball.
- 25:43Speaker 2: But nevertheless, Robert Gasser buckled down and got through it.
- 25:45Speaker 2: So I think you give Robert Gasser that start in
- 25:48Speaker 2: the tough environment in Los Angeles. He's proven he can
- 25:51Speaker 2: handle that sort of environment. Now it's going to be
- 25:54Speaker 2: a really difficult matchup for him with some of the
- 25:56Speaker 2: guys that they can throw at you. But Yeah, 3-4-5
- 26:00Speaker 2: at Dodger Stadium is going to be tricky because you
- 26:03Speaker 2: don't have obvious answers for some of those games. Now,
- 26:07Speaker 2: do you bring Miz out of the bullpen for one
- 26:08Speaker 2: of them? You might, but he's not going to start, like,
- 26:12Speaker 2: game four there. So this is what the Brewers are
- 26:15Speaker 2: going to have to sit down and they're going to
- 26:17Speaker 2: have to figure out. And, you know, for the most part,
- 26:20Speaker 2: you feel confident in their ability to put some plans
- 26:22Speaker 2: together because obviously they have the guys at the back end,
- 26:25Speaker 2: but then you just have, like, a plethora of options,
- 26:28Speaker 2: whether it's DL Hall, Chad Patrick, Sanzatella, Jojo Romero, Shane Drone.
- 26:32Speaker 2: I mean, you got to remember Shane Drone, Chad Patrick,
- 26:34Speaker 2: and Kyle Harrison didn't even pitch against the Padres. Those guys,
- 26:37Speaker 2: if they're on the roster, they're going to pitch against
- 26:39Speaker 2: the Dodgers in some capacity, but yeah, that's, that's going
- 26:43Speaker 2: to be a mismatch when you're going in there and,
- 26:45Speaker 2: you know, no, not to discredit the Brewers arms that
- 26:49Speaker 2: they have seen it all year. They're pretty dang good,
- 26:51Speaker 2: but It's going to be a little bit of a
- 26:53Speaker 2: mismatch when you're going up against Yamamoto at Dodger Stadium.
- 26:57Speaker 2: They're going to have to find some ways to scrap
- 26:59Speaker 2: out a win or two there.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Since all the Brewers fans hate AJ and they love me,
- 27:06Speaker 3: I'm going to say AJ said this and not me.
- 27:08Speaker 3: AJ said that the Brewers should have traded for Tarek Skubal.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Brewers fans don't need any more reason to have some
- 27:21Speaker 3: angst about, we've got to get to the World Series,
- 27:23Speaker 3: got to, got to, got to. But they have always
- 27:26Speaker 3: stood behind their front office and saying, no, no, no,
- 27:30Speaker 3: we should not have traded. Kurt Hogue even said, shouldn't
- 27:33Speaker 3: have traded, wouldn't be a great thing. Tarek Skubal beats
- 27:36Speaker 3: the Brewers in game one and the great Miz. Will
- 27:40Speaker 3: that be revisited by fans that were absolutely all over
- 27:45Speaker 3: AJ Brzezinski?
- 27:48Speaker 2: Well, no, they're not going to back down on there.
- 27:50Speaker 2: I mean, AJ hates the Brewers. They're not going to
- 27:52Speaker 2: back down from that at this point.
- 27:54Speaker 1: True that.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Buddy, that narrative has locked away for a long time.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Even though I picked them to win the World Series from.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Beginning of the playoffs. I mean, they just really hate me.
- 28:07Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know.
- 28:08Speaker 2: We could just turn this into, we could just turn
- 28:10Speaker 2: this into our episode of brewer territory for the week.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Like Corey and JP can get the episode off and
- 28:15Speaker 2: AJ can just spend time saying how much he loves
- 28:18Speaker 2: the brewers to get back on the good side in Milwaukee.
- 28:21Speaker 1: I don't know what else I can do.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Come on brewer territory and sing praises. I guess that's
- 28:27Speaker 2: about it. Come on. Whenever I'll have Corey set it up.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Kratzy to answer your question. I think, yes, this is
- 28:37Speaker 2: absolutely going to be revisited after this series, after Scooble starts.
- 28:42Speaker 2: I do think, though, you've got to have your answer
- 28:45Speaker 2: in place before this series begins. There's no buckling, no
- 28:51Speaker 2: going with the wind in however this series goes. You've
- 28:53Speaker 2: either got to say that was good process or it
- 28:55Speaker 2: was not good process. And honestly, if the Brewers had
- 29:00Speaker 2: been able to make the deal With the Tigers, if
- 29:04Speaker 2: the Tigers had accepted a non-Logan Henderson offer, whatever that
- 29:08Speaker 2: would have been, you know, Pena, Josh Adamshevsky, a couple
- 29:11Speaker 2: other arms, whatever. It didn't happen. But if they had, like,
- 29:16Speaker 2: I think the fact that the Brewers were playing in
- 29:19Speaker 2: those waters was even more uncomfortable than they usually are
- 29:23Speaker 2: in these deals. And this is exactly why. Because they
- 29:28Speaker 2: did not want Tarek Scooble on the other side. The
- 29:31Speaker 2: value that they saw in, oh, we get Scooble against
- 29:37Speaker 2: them instead of the other way around? The way that
- 29:39Speaker 2: would flip their odds. You know, they're running all these
- 29:41Speaker 2: things through the, the models and the numbers and whatnot.
- 29:44Speaker 2: That was enough for them to, to say, okay, we
- 29:46Speaker 2: will do what the model says is a pretty big
- 29:50Speaker 2: overpay and something they never do. Um, and that's why
- 29:53Speaker 2: they made such a run at it. So should they,
- 29:55Speaker 2: so I guess the question, yeah, should they have done
- 29:57Speaker 2: Henderson plus someone? Um, my answer is no, no matter
- 30:02Speaker 2: how this series goes, because we've, you know, when you
- 30:04Speaker 2: see Logan Henderson's, we've got what, a 2.3 career ERA
- 30:09Speaker 2: and 25, 30 starts. Um, I think you take six
- 30:13Speaker 2: years of that over the chaos of, of, you know,
- 30:17Speaker 2: one post season, but I'm not, I'm not willing to
- 30:21Speaker 2: rule out that, uh, you look back at this series
- 30:24Speaker 2: and you wonder, uh, what if?
- 30:27Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 30:28Speaker 2: So you got to say it.
- 30:29Speaker 3: You got to say it right now.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Was it good or bad?
- 30:32Speaker 2: I'll say it right now. I mean, it wasn't– I
- 30:33Speaker 2: don't think it was good to not trade for Tarek Skubal.
- 30:36Speaker 2: But it definitely wasn't bad.
- 30:38Speaker 1: I didn't say that.
- 30:39Speaker 2: It wasn't bad.
- 30:40Speaker 1: I thought they did everything right, Kurt. I thought they
- 30:42Speaker 1: should have not traded for Tarek. I thought they should
- 30:44Speaker 1: have just stuck with what they had.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Liar.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Liar.
- 30:49Speaker 2: So I'll ask you a question, AJ. What do you
- 30:52Speaker 2: think the percent odds are that Logan Henderson outpitches Tarek
- 30:56Speaker 2: Skubal in this series? They're not facing each other.
- 31:00Speaker 1: They're not facing each other, so I don't really know.
- 31:02Speaker 2: That's not a fair comparison. What if he can outperform
- 31:07Speaker 2: him without facing him?
- 31:09Speaker 1: I don't know. You know what would be real nice?
- 31:11Speaker 1: If they could go Miz, Scooble, Henderson. That would have
- 31:13Speaker 1: been real nice.
- 31:13Speaker 2: That would be fantastic.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Anyways. Anyways, I don't know, Kurt. But you know what?
- 31:20Speaker 1: It's going to be awesome game one in Milwaukee. I'm
- 31:22Speaker 1: not going to be there, so you don't have to
- 31:24Speaker 1: worry about big leagueing me again. I am going to
- 31:26Speaker 1: be rooting like heck for the Dodgers. So just everyone,
- 31:29Speaker 1: Milwaukee fans, clip it, even though I still picked the
- 31:33Speaker 1: Brewers to win the series and the World Series, for
- 31:35Speaker 1: that matter. So I don't know, Kurt. Thank you so much.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Check more of Kurt out on Brewer Territory. One day
- 31:43Speaker 1: he'll invite me on. I don't know. He probably won't,
- 31:45Speaker 1: but that's okay. It's on YouTube and any pods. Follow
- 31:48Speaker 1: the NLCS all the time, and also you can read
- 31:50Speaker 1: him in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
