- 0:00Taylor.
- 0:01Oh, what a goal by Peter Taylor.
- 0:19Ah, welcome to team of the 80s.
- 0:21My name is Gary Spencer.
- 0:23This is part two of the Andy Gray interview.
- 0:27Part one was last week and this week it's all about his England debut, what he feels about Crystal Palace Football Club nowadays and that FA cup semi final.
- 0:38So stay tuned, keep listening and don't forget to like, comment and subscribe.
- 0:45Thanks for tuning in.
- 0:46So I came back at a stronger player that year.
- 0:50We've got beat 9 nil by Liverpool.
- 0:54But you know the mad thing about it, girl, we didn't play bad that night.
- 1:01You.
- 1:01No, I agree.
- 1:02You were good till the 8th went in, weren't you?
- 1:04You were good, dad.
- 1:05Yeah, no, but.
- 1:06No, but you see the bad thing about it, you know when like you get hiding.
- 1:11Yeah.
- 1:11And you know that everyone's put down tools.
- 1:14Yeah.
- 1:15It wasn't like that.
- 1:17No, it wasn't.
- 1:18I mean, everything they.
- 1:20It went in.
- 1:21Yeah.
- 1:21The only person it destroyed was Sucks.
- 1:23Perry Suckling.
- 1:24Yeah.
- 1:25Because he was, he was never the same after that.
- 1:27No, not surprised.
- 1:29Yeah, I'm not surprised.
- 1:31So we, we're carrying on like we played the cut.
- 1:34I think I scored the winner against Portsmouth.
- 1:38Last minute penalty.
- 1:41Yeah, we.
- 1:42We had some easy kind of ties.
- 1:45The hardest tie we had was Cambridge away.
- 1:48Yeah.
- 1:49Because that's the time that John Beck was giving it about the mad fitness, the mad things they were doing.
- 1:56He wanted to be another woman.
- 1:57We had pure street fighters in our team.
- 1:59Do you know what I mean?
- 2:00Like you did, you did.
- 2:02If it had to go off, everyone was there.
- 2:05Do you know what I mean?
- 2:06Even Wimbledon didn't even intimidate us.
- 2:10Yeah.
- 2:10Even with their, the fast, the, the what's his name?
- 2:13Vinnie Jones and all that little.
- 2:15No, no, no, no.
- 2:17Funny enough, Brighty was suspended.
- 2:23Ian.
- 2:24Did Ian play up?
- 2:25Yeah, no, I played up front.
- 2:27I think Ian was injured and it was.
- 2:29I think he done his leg and he.
- 2:31Right, he's done his leg and he.
- 2:33Yeah, yeah.
- 2:35And I played up front and Jeff scored the winner and then we had Liverpool.
- 2:41But you know the mad thing about that build up for that semi final?
- 2:45I was telling everyone to back Liverpool.
- 2:48We can't win.
- 2:49We can't.
- 2:50We can't win.
- 2:51We can't win.
- 2:51And that back in the day then the grand national was on around the same time.
- 2:56Yes.
- 2:58So I was living in Putney at the time, the place that Queens Park Rangers gave me when, when I signed for him.
- 3:05So I was still in Putney.
- 3:07Right.
- 3:07And I never forget, I was telling everyone, listen Just put red is on Liverpool.
- 3:14We can't win.
- 3:14We can't win.
- 3:16So we went to a karaoke place across the road, literally about five minutes from my flat before we went to.
- 3:24I don't know if it was stock or else.
- 3:25We stayed in.
- 3:26Everything was just chilled, like.
- 3:28Like there was no.
- 3:29No one felt any pressure or anything.
- 3:32We just.
- 3:32Just got on with it.
- 3:33Because I think secretly inside we were all saying to ourselves, as long as they don't embarrass us on national tv, yes, we'll be all right.
- 3:45Yes.
- 3:45I mean, yes.
- 3:46But I think all of us were thinking that individually without even saying it.
- 3:51Right.
- 3:51So anyway, so we get to the.
- 3:54Get to the game.
- 3:56Unbelievable atmosphere.
- 3:57How did you.
- 3:58How did you feel that day, Andy?
- 3:59Did you did.
- 4:00Was that.
- 4:01That was.
- 4:01At that point.
- 4:02That was the biggest game.
- 4:03Had you played for England then or.
- 4:05No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 4:06At that point of your career, wasn't it, that game?
- 4:09Yeah, yeah.
- 4:10Do you know what?
- 4:11I was just so relaxed because it was Mark up front and I had the role of like floating and like getting back and.
- 4:21And John Sloco was.
- 4:23Or was it Richard Shaw was man marking Barnsley.
- 4:28So I was like floating.
- 4:29Do you know what I mean?
- 4:30Like, he could play, by the way.
- 4:31Richard Shaw, he's a good player.
- 4:33Yeah, sure.
- 4:33As he was a great player.
- 4:34I love.
- 4:35He's me boy.
- 4:36Him and John Salaco.
- 4:39I see him as the two little boys because I used to sort of.
- 4:42Like, yeah, underrated Richard Shaw.
- 4:45He could play.
- 4:45Yeah.
- 4:46I think they scored after what, four or five minutes.
- 4:49Quick.
- 4:50Yeah, quick.
- 4:51Yeah, yeah, it was quick.
- 4:53It was Gary O'Reilly trying to play the offside.
- 4:56In fact, I think Pardon lost it in the midfield.
- 4:59Went into Steve McMahon.
- 5:02He done the split pass.
- 5:06Yeah.
- 5:12Intercepting Rush.
- 5:13Going to the left.
- 5:14Now on side Ian Rush.
- 5:18Liverpool take the lead and Ian Rush, the ace goal scorer, once again makes it look so easy.
- 5:25We've gone in at half time, 1 nil down, but we didn't really feel like anything sort of thing.
- 5:36Everyone was like, quiet Steve Dummy's team talk and.
- 5:40But.
- 5:41But the atmosphere was like, still upbeat, you know what I mean?
- 5:44Like, we knew we had lots of.
- 5:46Lots of legs in us just to.
- 5:48Cut you off there.
- 5:49Half time was.
- 5:51Was Stevie Copper.
- 5:52Was he like, you know what, if we.
- 5:54We have a go here, we can have a go here.
- 5:57Or was he.
- 5:58Was he more.
- 5:59No, no, no.
- 6:00What he said was, keep playing the way you're playing.
- 6:04We're fitted in them, right?
- 6:07We will get a chance.
- 6:09Wow.
- 6:09So he wanted us to keep the same shape as we started the first minute, right.
- 6:13But it didn't go like that because what happened was Pemberton got the ball and I don't know if you see it, I'm telling him, go, go, go.
- 6:22Couple's not even come out of the tunnel.
- 6:26So if you see it when they pan on him.
- 6:28Yeah, at the tunnel, literally, he might have been a couple of billboards in Bang 1 1.
- 6:37Crystal palace has been concerned.
- 6:39Well, let's see what palace can do about it now in the second half as they attack the hold end here at Villa Park.
- 6:44John Pemberton, a lovely run early on and a chance for Barber and Venison.
- 6:48And it's a shot and it's there by Bright.
- 6:53It's Mark Bright straight from the kicko after John Salaco.
- 6:57Shot didn't quite get there.
- 6:59Bright certainly did.
- 7:00And palace are level.
- 7:02What a run, by the way, Pemberton.
- 7:03There, that's the best run Pemberton's ever done because Pembo was like always clumsy.
- 7:08Do you know what I mean?
- 7:09The cross was like.
- 7:11The cross was like world class.
- 7:13Everything about it was like.
- 7:16Yeah, where did that go?
- 7:17Yeah, I know, yeah, yeah.
- 7:19And the mad thing about it was we were talking about what we would do if we got to the final.
- 7:27So when we were winning two one, I'm saying, brighty, we're gonna get some money for the tickets now.
- 7:38Andy Gray has placed the ball, that's his cross.
- 7:41And Bright's there, O'Reilly's there.
- 7:44And palace, are they in front?
- 7:46Yes, they are.
- 7:48And then next minute, Barnes, he scores the.
- 7:54No, McMahon scores the equalizer, and then Barnes, he scores the penalty.
- 8:01So we're three two down, 87th minute.
- 8:05But girl, let's just go back a little bit because I love, I love it, I love it when players say that stuff because people don't realize that when you're out there, you're just out there and like.
- 8:14And you're with each other every day.
- 8:16And you say, you say.
- 8:18Because that's what you would do if you was walking down.
- 8:20Yeah, yeah.
- 8:22Don't realize when you, when you play football and you're good at football, you're going to say the same as you're walking down the street.
- 8:30People don't think that in the semi final.
- 8:33Yeah, of course.
- 8:33Right, right.
- 8:34We're gonna make some money here, mate.
- 8:36You know, but for the life of Miguel, if you look back, that go, I scored.
- 8:44Yeah.
- 8:46It was only me thinking it was good.
- 8:49I visualized it being that this guy is gonna chest it.
- 8:55For the life of me, I don't know why he did that, but if you see all the runs I was doing, it was like, I'm waiting and I'm not.
- 9:02I knew it would be an opportunity for me to go bang.
- 9:08Yeah.
- 9:08Because if I would have just stopped and watched play, I'm nowhere near that situation.
- 9:15Yeah, true, but I think you could make that argument about any goal scorer ever in life.
- 9:20If I did, if I hadn't, if I hadn't, like, I think you, you by that stage, you'd played the game enough to know that your instinct was the right instinct and that's why you moved.
- 9:32Because if you think about it, you had one opposite you that day.
- 9:35Rushy.
- 9:36If he hadn't, if he hadn't, if he hadn't what he did every time because he knew when to go.
- 9:41They're now less than three minutes away from going out.
- 9:45Thomas and Bright's in there and Thomas Staunton Gray, Gray 3 3.
- 9:54Andy Gray for Palace.
- 9:56They're back in it.
- 9:57That's, that's instinct, Andy.
- 9:58That's you playing the game for years.
- 10:00You, you knew.
- 10:01Same as rushing you same as Dal Glees knew.
- 10:05They all know.
- 10:06I was, I was so proud for you, mate.
- 10:08I was so happy for you, you know, because when you scored that goal, all I saw was this 13 year old in a sheepskin, you know what I mean?
- 10:20And those things are really lovely because people, you know, you watch football and for everyone that makes it, there's thousands that don't make it.
- 10:29And when you see somebody play in a spotlight game like that and they do really well, you can't help but feel pleased for them, you know what I mean?
- 10:38Like you really, it was a, it was a great feeling for you and it was a great feeling for every palace fan.
- 10:44But for me that saw you first turn up in, in those days, very special, Andy, very special.
- 10:51Oh, thanks, girl.
- 10:51Because even like when I look at it, I was there that night when they got promoted with 51,000 or 52,000.
- 10:59I was in the dressing room and there's even pictures of me of a 14 year old with w sheep from I I money in in the book.
- 11:10So I look at palace, that, that was my club and you know the sad thing about it, that's where I paid all my best football.
- 11:20Forget about me going to Villa Tottenham, Queen's Park Rangers.
- 11:24I wish that I could have stayed there because that's where I played.
- 11:31That's where I was happy but unhappy because What I'm saying today, they kind of took me for granted because of the way I got back in the game.
- 11:44Yeah.
- 11:46Which really kind of hurt me.
- 11:47And I love Steve Copple.
- 11:48I mean, I mean, girl, we had a relationship.
- 11:53And I said to like Alan Smith.
- 11:57I apologize to Alan Smith maybe two years ago because he used to tell me things and I used to kind of look at him as like a Joey.
- 12:09Everything.
- 12:09Everything.
- 12:10He said to me.
- 12:13Yes.
- 12:13And I rang him and I said, alan, I've got to apologize to you because if I would have listened to even after what you said to me, I would have been all right.
- 12:25Because he had people like Gareth Southgate, who was limited as a player, but what Gareth had, he knew how to play the game.
- 12:43Mm.
- 12:45I didn't understand the power of being light Gal.
- 12:50I was only going on ability.
- 12:53What I didn't grasp was you need a bit of that as well.
- 12:58Because when you're not doing so well, what they gonna do?
- 13:04Well, it's funny, like in.
- 13:05In life I've always been attracted to different types of characters and.
- 13:09And I, I remember you vividly.
- 13:11And you were, you were a Marmite character when you were young.
- 13:16You were a piece of work.
- 13:17Yeah.
- 13:17Yeah.
- 13:18You would, you would give it to the first teamers and they'd be like, who the in.
- 13:22Honestly though, I.
- 13:23I still really feel that.
- 13:25That whatever that was inside you also helped you to become.
- 13:30Yeah.
- 13:31You know that.
- 13:32You know, listen, mate, to make it in professional football and to go on and play for your country like you did, you need a bit of that.
- 13:40I haven't really spoke about this, but I knew when, I'll tell you when my career ended.
- 13:47Right.
- 13:48And I'm being totally honest.
- 13:49When I got picked for England, really, hear me what I'm gonna say.
- 13:54It wasn't the fact I got big headed.
- 13:57None of that.
- 13:59What it was that season, Gal.
- 14:04I.
- 14:04I was.
- 14:05I was playing the best football of my life.
- 14:10I wasn't even thinking about anything.
- 14:12I was just.
- 14:13I was just doing it.
- 14:14I was just doing it.
- 14:15Doing it, doing it, doing it.
- 14:18The day I got picked for England, I was sick.
- 14:21I never trained for four days.
- 14:25Couple said, stay in bed, just come in.
- 14:28On Friday when we traveled up to Liverpool, played Liverpool, I had a monster game.
- 14:37We beat him.
- 14:38I think we beat him two, one.
- 14:42I got taken off, maybe five minutes to go.
- 14:46Anyway, so at the shower and that, blah, blah, blah.
- 14:50Then couple come to me when, oh, someone wants to speak to you in the boot room.
- 14:56Just go in the boot room.
- 14:57Someone wants to speak to you.
- 15:00It was Graham Taylor.
- 15:03Don't forget he signed me for Pat for Villa.
- 15:06So anyway, get in the boot room.
- 15:08He said, andy, we've been watching you all season.
- 15:12You've changed, you know, you weren't getting bookings and all that.
- 15:19You just changed.
- 15:20So anyway, bang, he says to me, on that Saturday at 5:30 or quarter to 6, you are playing against Poland.
- 15:31I was told like a week before the game, right, I'm playing.
- 15:36But he said, don't tell anyone that you're going to be in the squad on Monday when they announce it.
- 15:42Now, the England team selected by Graham Taylor, the one that the players were told about last weekend.
- 15:48The five players to support Gary Lineker, which is the way he wants it put.
- 15:53Coming from midfield, the back four, as expected, with Gary Mabbott alongside Des Walker.
- 15:58And two players making their first appearance in full internationals.
- 16:01Andy Gray of Crystal palace at number four and Andy Sinton of Queen's Park Rangers at number 11.
- 16:07Fantastic.
- 16:08Right, so I mean, Brown's United.
- 16:14Can't say a word, guy, you know what I mean?
- 16:16I mean, Brett said it and having a great sign, right?
- 16:20So my phone rang.
- 16:26Hello.
- 16:26Congratulations.
- 16:28It rang, rang, rang, rang all day, all day.
- 16:32Like when I got in in the afternoon, it kept ringing, ringing, putting it down, putting it down.
- 16:36Lovely, right.
- 16:38But there's a flip side to that girl, because it didn't go the way it should have gone for me.
- 16:44I had a slight hamstring.
- 16:46I should have pulled out of that squad because Dave west tried his best and it wasn't, you know, I mean, I wasn't.
- 16:52Yeah, 100.
- 16:54But when England comes calling down, you're being told that you're playing.
- 16:59I'm not being funny.
- 17:00Like if some, if someone chopped your arm off and you said, you can go and watch like Prince playing and Michael Jackson, you're going in here, do you know what I mean?
- 17:08You're.
- 17:09You're wrapping yourself up.
- 17:10You're going.
- 17:10You'd have played 50 games by then.
- 17:12You'd have pulled out.
- 17:13You just said, no, not for me.
- 17:15Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:17So.
- 17:18But that I had a chance in the game.
- 17:25Here comes Platt.
- 17:26Gray's on the far side and he holds his head because that was a clear cut chance.
- 17:33And I got criticized by Jimmy, as.
- 17:36You see Andy Sinton turning inside, whipping.
- 17:39In the cross, touched on there by David Platt.
- 17:42And it's Andy Gray there just on the volley.
- 17:46I think perhaps at Crystal palace he would have been expected to score.
- 17:50I think it was offside anyway.
- 17:52And Football comes about timing.
- 17:54Yes.
- 17:55And, yeah, and reactions.
- 17:57I was strong enough to get back in the game, but I had no ambition to get back in the game.
- 18:07Now the pressure's on me.
- 18:09Now when I come back, I'm trying to argue like Tiger Woods.
- 18:16I'm not saying I'm Tiger woods, but I'm saying he's won 18 or, sorry, 15 majors and even he was winning them by 10, 15, 20 shots.
- 18:27Well, flipping it.
- 18:28If he goes a bit boss sided, well, he's still like 15 shots in front of people.
- 18:34All of a sudden when you try to do things that you're not capable of doing, but you keep doing it, now your game's all out.
- 18:45My game just went.
- 18:46But on the, but on the back of all what, all I've produced.
- 18:52I've got a move to Tottenham for a million pounds.
- 18:55But that was on, obviously reputation of what I've built up.
- 18:59So I went there, gave.
- 19:01I just.
- 19:03Well, I mean obviously we, we both know football's a confidence game.
- 19:06It really is.
- 19:08It's just so strange and lovely for you to like admit that, but yeah, so much of the game, Andy, I think at your level and the top levels is in your head, right?
- 19:19When you really feel you can play, you know, you start to play on the ball and when that goes, I'm sure, I'm sure it plays on your mind just quickly at Tottenham.
- 19:32Was, was Fenn at Tottenham with you?
- 19:34Yeah, yeah.
- 19:35I should pick him up in Finchley.
- 19:37Ah, great, great.
- 19:38He was on.
- 19:39He's on a ban in driving.
- 19:41From driving.
- 19:42No, listen, Terry Fennick, lovely guy and he used to give me time when I was a school boy.
- 19:50So yeah, Ben, good, good guy, I think.
- 19:57I don't know if he's in Barbados still.
- 19:59Ben's in Trinidad.
- 20:01Yeah,.
- 20:04Yeah, he's in Trinidad.
- 20:05I actually texted him last night then.
- 20:09Was always very good to me as well.
- 20:11Yeah, he's, he's a good lad.
- 20:12As you know.
- 20:12He's a down to earth fella.
- 20:14Had a great career, you know, and yeah, like yourself, you know, play for the country.
- 20:20Yeah, lovely.
- 20:21I mean and, but yeah, for you to admit that, I mean, would you listen, Andy, I, I have no idea.
- 20:31Right.
- 20:31I mean I was okay as a kid that, that ended very quickly.
- 20:34But for you, would you say a lot of the game at that level is in your head?
- 20:40A lot of it's in your head and it's, it's processing.
- 20:44So it's like, it's like you did modeling.
- 20:49So you knew what.
- 20:52Well, you would have Known with experience.
- 20:55What suits you better?
- 20:56What would crack you on that?
- 20:59Someone's gonna go, I want Gary to be in this campaign because you know what I mean?
- 21:04Great analogy.
- 21:05Yeah.
- 21:06Yeah, I get it.
- 21:07Andy, with me, I think I got to the top of the tree.
- 21:14I fell.
- 21:15I didn't know how to get back up it.
- 21:18Right.
- 21:19I mean, listen, girl, was you trying.
- 21:23Different things and in the game, was you trying to be a player that you wasn't?
- 21:26Would you had you stopped doing the basic things that you were good at?
- 21:28Yes.
- 21:29Like getting it and then driving forward and lying.
- 21:31Yeah.
- 21:32You stopped doing all that.
- 21:33But I had a chance.
- 21:37And this is.
- 21:38I'll go back to when I say I apologize to Alan.
- 21:41I've got to give you the reason.
- 21:43So when I was at Tottenham, I played.
- 21:50Yeah, I played a few games, but not.
- 21:52They didn't see the best of me, but.
- 21:54But I went to Swindon on loan with Glenn Model.
- 21:59Yeah.
- 22:00Yeah.
- 22:00Fen ended up there too, didn't he?
- 22:02Yeah, yeah.
- 22:03But I played on loan there and I've done really well.
- 22:07And that got me back in the first team at Tottenham.
- 22:10Right.
- 22:10So I finished the season and then Alan Smith got the manager's job at palace.
- 22:17And Aussie, our dealers took over because I was that.
- 22:21Yeah.
- 22:22And Aussie said, listen, I'm not going to play.
- 22:24Blah, blah, blah.
- 22:25Find a club.
- 22:27So anyway, he's bombed me out for pre season, me and Vinnie Sandwich, so we had to train at the main ground on our own with Chrissy.
- 22:39You're a mad thing.
- 22:44But Alan Smith came in to take me on loan.
- 22:48So I went to Mitchum and I saw him in Steve's office.
- 22:53Right, right.
- 22:55So he's sitting in Steve's.
- 22:57So now I've got a vision of Smithy sitting in Steve.
- 23:02Yeah, Steve's chair.
- 23:04I'm sitting in front of him and he was talking.
- 23:08And I kind of disrespected where I should have went back, because I think that could have been the spark to get me, you know, because I was coming back out, but I wasn't where I wanted to be.
- 23:22But if I would have come back somewhere, which was familiar to me, Yeah, I think it would have been a different story.
- 23:29And then I looked at Smithy and said, thanks, but no thanks.
- 23:33Worst decision of my life.
- 23:35And that is what I.
- 23:36What to explain, to say to him, I'm sorry that I did that because I shouldn't have done that.
- 23:41Because after that, it just got worse and worse and worse.
- 23:45So many players go through that.
- 23:48It's interesting I gotta ask you about this one, because it was a.
- 23:53It was a favorite place of mine for a long time.
- 23:56I used to go to Marbella from 82, 83 up until 1991.
- 24:03Then I stopped going.
- 24:05I went back there in 2001 and it was horrible.
- 24:11It was.
- 24:11It was like.
- 24:13It changed so much.
- 24:15Yeah, Marbella for you, What a move, though,.
- 24:22That was.
- 24:23No, but, you know.
- 24:24You know, the mad thing about that was at the time, Yugoslavia just come out of civil war, right.
- 24:32So a lot of the gangsters, they were taking money out.
- 24:37So where they all went was Marbella.
- 24:39Yes.
- 24:40So.
- 24:40So a guy called Petrovic, right, Took.
- 24:43Took the side from Jesus Gil.
- 24:46He owned Athletico Madrid.
- 24:48So anyway, he sold him the club.
- 24:51I've gone there and we've been put up in the Benobola Hotel.
- 24:58And he owned a club called Long.
- 25:00Is it Long Legs?
- 25:01Legs, it's at the beginning of the pool.
- 25:05Long Legs, I think it was called Lap Dancing.
- 25:08Gaffy owned that and all that.
- 25:09And he had all dancers coming over.
- 25:12So I'm staying in these apartments with all the dancers.
- 25:15And it was just mad.
- 25:18It was just a.
- 25:19A mad scenario.
- 25:22So there they stopped paying our wages.
- 25:28So we had the Petrovic run out of money.
- 25:33He's run out of money.
- 25:34They've stopped paying us.
- 25:36And it was a thing between the south and the north.
- 25:40There was friction with the players.
- 25:43So when we would go out to train and do the Rhondas, it had been all the guys from the north and all the guys from the south.
- 25:52And because I was like.
- 25:54I was like Switzerland, I would kind of move in, like, the two groups.
- 26:01It was a nice lifestyle, mate.
- 26:03Yeah, I used to.
- 26:04I used to.
- 26:05I used to love Mar.
- 26:06I really did.
- 26:08And I was thinking, wow, that was such a place for you to end up playing football in Marbella.
- 26:13Where did you live there?
- 26:14And.
- 26:16You know where the mosque is?
- 26:18Los Terrassos.
- 26:20I had a.
- 26:21A lovely apartment in Los Terrastos, which is.
- 26:25You know, where the McDonald's is.
- 26:28You could tell me anything now.
- 26:30I haven't been there since 2002.
- 26:32I went back there in 2002 and the whole gaffer changed.
- 26:36Like the.
- 26:37Yeah, where the.
- 26:38Where there used to be car parks was now apartments.
- 26:41There was like, his bar.
- 26:43There was like.
- 26:44None of that was there when I was going there.
- 26:46So you could tell me anything.
- 26:47You could say, gal, there's a spaceship in the Orange Square.
- 26:50I wouldn't know.
- 26:51Round the ground was not literally from Orange Square.
- 26:55It'll take you maybe 15 minutes to walk there, saying that I got a move from there to Falkirk.
- 27:04It was in the blazing sun to Falkirk.
- 27:06Oh.
- 27:06And so they let me go.
- 27:08I went there and I think, yeah, we played.
- 27:10I played in the Cup Final there, but I was on good money there.
- 27:14And we had Eamon Bannon, but Ayman Bannon, girl was the fittest man you would ever see.
- 27:24Everything about him was running, running, running, running, running.
- 27:28At that stage in my life, I.
- 27:30I didn't have it in me to be running like a madman.
- 27:33Do you know what I mean?
- 27:34So, yeah, I fell out with him.
- 27:35And in my contract, I had that play Saturday.
- 27:40I could be back in on Tuesday so I could go back to London Saturday.
- 27:45Cut.
- 27:45Fly back Tuesday.
- 27:46So he's the manager, he's unhappy with me.
- 27:50And, like, we was just having so many arguments.
- 27:54Like, he's keep making me run.
- 27:56He's just doing all sorts of stuff to try and break me.
- 28:00I said to him, listen, amen.
- 28:02That's not happening, mate.
- 28:04I said, I've got a good contract here.
- 28:07Pay me up and I'll go, right?
- 28:10But obviously, the guy that.
- 28:12They couldn't pay me up, girl.
- 28:13Do you know what I mean?
- 28:14So he got the sack and another manager took over.
- 28:18He was.
- 28:19He's really good.
- 28:20He sort of, like, took me in and said, right, Andy, I'm gonna play you as a sweeper.
- 28:25And we got to the Cup Final.
- 28:26We beat Celtic in the semis.
- 28:28So, yeah, it was.
- 28:32Yeah, I played at the back.
- 28:33Sweeping.
- 28:34Yeah, it was good.
- 28:35It was.
- 28:36It was.
- 28:36It was easy.
- 28:37Do you know what I mean?
- 28:38So looking back then, really, what would you say?
- 28:44I mean, obviously, represent.
- 28:45I know it didn't go well for you, but obviously representing the country is that you represent your country.
- 28:50When you represent your country, it means a lot.
- 28:53But your domestic highlights.
- 28:57Would it.
- 28:57Would it have been.
- 28:59Would it have been Liverpool in the Cup Final?
- 29:01Would it have been that the semi and the.
- 29:04And the menu game.
- 29:07You've asked a great question.
- 29:08And lots of people would sort of like, say, oh, I did this.
- 29:12That.
- 29:12No, at the end of the day, any game that you look back on, there's only one.
- 29:18For me, the pinnacle of my powers was that Sunday.
- 29:24I didn't stand still there.
- 29:26I kept going, going, going, going.
- 29:29But to be remembered, that was the game.
- 29:34And I think it's the greatest semi final in history.
- 29:38If you look back at it, had everything, the underdog fighting the establishment, as.
- 29:46You were telling me.
- 29:46I can hear John Watson after you scored that goal.
- 29:51Yeah, and how he describes.
- 29:54Of course it's carnage, man.
- 29:56You're going mad.
- 29:57Like it's great.
- 29:58Remember that feeling inside you when you scored that goal?
- 30:01That is every memory since you were an 11 year old kid.
- 30:04Right.
- 30:04They're now less than three minutes away from going out.
- 30:09Thomas and Bright's in there and Thomas, Staunton.
- 30:14Gray.
- 30:14Gray 3 3.
- 30:18Andy Gray for Palace.
- 30:20They're back in it.
- 30:23And Liverpool's defense all over the place.
- 30:27Why I jumped into the.
- 30:28The crowd is because when I was at Villa when Gary Thompson scored a goal, he jumped into the crowd and that is the first thing I thought of.
- 30:39Big Tomo.
- 30:40I'm jumping into the crowd, you know what I mean?
- 30:42The palace fans, listen, I know now they've got these ultras and maybe if we would have had.
- 30:51If we would have had that sort of support in our team, maybe we could have.
- 30:57That could have been our 12th man.
- 30:59Because they are unbelievable.
- 31:01Gal.
- 31:01Yeah, no, but sorry to cut you off there but.
- 31:03And this is really crazy timing.
- 31:05I don't know if you notice and you don't notice so I'm going to tell you they stopped.
- 31:10After 20 years, the Ultra stopped.
- 31:13They knocked it on the head because they were saying it's too much aggravation.
- 31:16They get too much went down with Nottingham Forest with all that with that banner.
- 31:22After 20 years, Andy, the ultra is finished.
- 31:25But the whole reason I'm telling you this little story is because I said on Twitter the In 1979, I had 52000 in the third division I had 15, 000.
- 31:36It doesn't matter.
- 31:37Palace fans will still always be palace fans.
- 31:39Whatever you call them.
- 31:40You don't have to give them a name like that part of South London.
- 31:45They get behind the team, right?
- 31:47And whatever went.
- 31:48And there's always.
- 31:49There's moments in time for everybody.
- 31:50There's moments in time for you, there's moments in time for fans.
- 31:55There we come another.
- 31:56Listen.
- 31:57Other teams get by without ultras and they get behind the team.
- 32:00Palace fans will find a way.
- 32:02You, you don't really do Twitter anymore, right?
- 32:05I look at it.
- 32:07But if I ain't got something to say, I'm not saying it.
- 32:10We talked earlier about players losing touch with hands, right?
- 32:15Yeah.
- 32:16And I know you're a very humble fella, you never used to be.
- 32:21But you are very important and I.
- 32:23Love, I love that about you.
- 32:25But.
- 32:26But I can say that because I've known you a long time but I know that the fans loved you interacting because you're saying you're showing it from a.
- 32:35A player's perspective.
- 32:37And I was on Twitter and they were talking about older fanatics and it's the last day and they've decided to pull away.
- 32:44And I was telling them, like, they were fine in 79 and they were fine in the third division and they'll be fine again, you know, but you being on Twitter and when you're, yeah, interacting with the fans, it's
- 32:58almost like when you want to invest a bit of dough and you've got the insider, the stock market, you know, because you see the game in a different way.
- 33:06It's impossible when people shout from the terraces.
- 33:10Doesn't matter how knowledgeable they are.
- 33:11When you're out there and you're playing, you see the game in a different way.
- 33:15You know that, you know.
- 33:17Oh, yeah.
- 33:18But to be.
- 33:19To be honest with you, girl, it's like, like Even on my WhatsApp for such, for some strange reason, I'm in a Palace group.
- 33:29God knows how I'm in it.
- 33:31But I will only make remarks when they're kind of getting carried away and kind of let them think, well, this is the best that we can do.
- 33:45I love the club.
- 33:46And even, like, just, even certain things, like, like when I.
- 33:51To watch a game, I mean, usually if I go to a Palace, then, girl, I pay for my ticket.
- 33:57Wow.
- 33:58Wow.
- 33:59Listen, I'll give you an example, right?
- 34:02I go to Aston Villa, not so much this season now because they're doing the two stands, the side stands, so the hospitality has been cut down for this season.
- 34:17But when I tell you, when I do the hospitality there, there's like 20, is usually 22 players, but it's.
- 34:26It's a cross of the European side, our side, the side that won the League cup with Brian Little, and Brian Little is like one of the most humblest people.
- 34:44Like, I'll tell you another thing, Tottenham, when we played Tottenham at Villa and Tottenham was struggling, they've done a stroke of genius, their hospitality with Aussie Arden, Maxi Miller, Paul Roberts, Falco, they were.
- 35:01They watched the game and they won.
- 35:04So the, the management said, well, you guys are good omens.
- 35:10So they took him to the Villa, like up in the.
- 35:14Yeah, palace, they wouldn't do that.
- 35:19Steve Parish, lovely geezer.
- 35:21But is the new kind of chairman that they're not interested in old players?
- 35:28Yeah, they got Jimmy Cannon.
- 35:29Yeah, he must have helped Kenny out.
- 35:31They're not the only palace players.
- 35:33Vince does a bit, but.
- 35:35Yeah, no, Vince does it.
- 35:37Jim Cannon does it.
- 35:39John Salaco is very Good, because John loves to sing and he loves all of that, so.
- 35:45I know, I know the regulars are a gym.
- 35:48And Vince, the only time I would hear from the club is, oh, Andy, do you want to walk 26 miles for palace for life?
- 35:56Okay.
- 35:57Yeah, I've done it for the first three years, me and Andy Johnson.
- 36:01And there was another player and there was no fanfare around it, Right.
- 36:07After three years, it became a fanfare.
- 36:10So then I'm not gonna say, but that everyone wanted to.
- 36:16To get involved in it because it's.
- 36:19They turned it into a big thing now.
- 36:21Do you know what I mean?
- 36:22And it's not like I want anything or I want to sit in the.
- 36:27The board.
- 36:28No, if I want to go to a game, I should be able to walk up to that door and go, right, there's me and my son.
- 36:38Is there a couple of tickets?
- 36:42I don't know what goes on inside football clubs anymore, but I do feel that players such as yourself, iconic players.
- 36:51Listen, at the end of the day, how many players play for a club over 100 years?
- 36:57They should have two.
- 36:58Whatever game you want to attend to, they should have two tickets there.
- 37:02You know as well as I do, if you don't pick them up, somebody else will pick them up.
- 37:06It's not like they're not going to go used.
- 37:08But for me, if I'm a chairman of a football club, I'm giving the box office at the start of the season, have these tickets on the side.
- 37:17If they haven't gone by 10 to 3, then out and somewhere else.
- 37:21And I guarantee you, Andy, and I'm saying this for a reason, if people go on YouTube and they look at palace, they're going to be watching your game.
- 37:29They're going to be watching the game with Brighty scores, where you score, where there's an FA cup semi final where Dalglish is involved and icons of the game.
- 37:37So in a way, you are performing a daily PR job for that club.
- 37:44Steve Parish may have a different conversation with me about it, but.
- 37:47But for me, at the end of the day, what difference does it make?
- 37:52Listen, there was one time I was shocked.
- 37:54I got invited to his.
- 37:58He has a.
- 37:58Like a.
- 37:59A dinner with like a couple of players like me.
- 38:03And Eddie McGoldrick got invited to it.
- 38:06And I was shocked there.
- 38:11Susanna Reed there.
- 38:13Copple was there, Bry was there.
- 38:16I think it was in Groucho.
- 38:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:20I was shocked.
- 38:21And I'm thinking, you know, maybe I take that side of it a bit too personal.
- 38:27Do you Know what I mean?
- 38:27Maybe.
- 38:28I don't know.
- 38:28I mean you would know a lot more than I would.
- 38:31I mean I, I've lost complete touch with the modern day gamer.
- 38:35Complete touch.
- 38:37Andy, did you ever go in the cafe?
- 38:38Solid.
- 38:39Did you ever go in there by the ground?
- 38:40Yeah, yeah.
- 38:41When I used to sneak off from school they used to run on a Tuesday at Crystal palace at the, at the, what's it called?
- 38:49The, they used to do the, the cross countries like with the terrible Venables and that.
- 38:54And then they would go to Solly's, right, and have a big like fry up and all that.
- 38:58So yeah, I was there a couple of times.
- 39:00Yeah, yeah, love Sol.
- 39:05I think he's, I think his boy tried to play.
- 39:07Did he, he come down.
- 39:08I think he's around your age his boy, isn't he?
- 39:10Graham.
- 39:12Graham, yeah.
- 39:13Yeah, Graham, Graham played, Graham played in my school side.
- 39:16So I went to school for Ingram and we played against Grabsy Grabs.
- 39:22He went to Sellers.
- 39:26Yeah, Graham was all right.
- 39:27Played center half.
- 39:28He was all right.
- 39:28I mean he was all right at that level.
- 39:31He was okay.
- 39:32It's very hard to imagine, I guess it's like anything that we could imagine 50 years ago if you could imagine a Premier League side.
- 39:40So palace were in the first Premier League side.
- 39:43Yeah, they did their training and they're going to the calf and in the calf and in the calf there's the roofers and the brick layers and the gears is all walking in and the boys are there and having
- 39:56their breakfast and they're having their lunch or whatever and they're talking about.
- 39:59And they're like, yeah, I'll see you Saturday.
- 40:02Because the ground is like two minutes away.
- 40:04Not even.
- 40:04Yeah, yeah, imagine that.
- 40:06Imagine that in these days.
- 40:08Imagine like.
- 40:09And so.
- 40:10And I think, I think what's really important about that is that those little bunches of people that were in that calf at that time and the lads are in the corner and like they, they, they talk about it
- 40:25naturally they do at home and then all of a sudden they talk about it in the pub and they talk about it at work.
- 40:30And the fan base, the fan base then feels more.
- 40:34This is what I was talking about being connected to the players, right?
- 40:37100%.
- 40:38Yeah.
- 40:38A lot more connected than how they are now.
- 40:42It's just hard to explain to anybody in this day and age that on any day of the week around 1:30, the whole first.
- 40:50Not the whole first team, that's exaggerating.
- 40:5370 of the first team are in there having their, having Their lunch.
- 40:58And, and you've got everyone from Jim Cannon, everybody, Phil, Vince, everybody.
- 41:03No, not lunch.
- 41:04Having a fryer.
- 41:05Yeah, a fry up.
- 41:06Yeah, a proper fryer.
- 41:09Sausages, bacon, egg, beans.
- 41:12That was it.
- 41:12The.
- 41:13Well, put this way.
- 41:14Mitchum.
- 41:15I remember Barbs where she used to smoke and the f.
- 41:19Egg, the, the.
- 41:22The fag ash used to go on your food when she's like,.
- 41:28Yeah,.
- 41:31I'll tell you what, he was unbelievable because when I first went back to palace, obviously they didn't have no money.
- 41:37So basically he was the kit man, the groundsman.
- 41:42He run the calf, he done everything.
- 41:45And it's funny, I.
- 41:47I went to a palace up to the training ground maybe last year sometime.
- 41:54Gal, they must have had at least 12, like, people just walking around like, you know, like with giving out water.
- 42:0912?
- 42:10Yeah, yeah, 12.
- 42:12Morris said that popsy little tractor what he would do the back pitch with and then the other 1, 2, 3 pitches.
- 42:19He done everything on his own.
- 42:20Done the kit, washed it.
- 42:23I know.
- 42:24You know, but again, he loved the club.
- 42:28It was a different time.
- 42:31Morris Morrison, Bob were great.
- 42:32Like, you know, it was funny because I used to.
- 42:37I used to go home and away, right, with watching palace when I was like 13, 14.
- 42:44Morris used to.
- 42:46Used to organize the trains.
- 42:49Yeah, yeah.
- 42:50So Neil.
- 42:50Neil Everett, who was the photographer.
- 42:52Neil coaches.
- 42:55And Morris organized the trains.
- 42:57So when I was.
- 42:58Ended up training on those days of Tuesday, Thursday, whatever we used to do as kids at Mitchum, when Morris was at Mitchum, like, I.
- 43:06I knew Morris from old, you know, and like, that's how the game is.
- 43:11Like, it will never be that again.
- 43:15And of course, money changes everything.
- 43:17It'll never be that again.
- 43:18But, but, but those were.
- 43:20Those are really great times, Morris.
- 43:23Yeah, man.
- 43:24What a.
- 43:24What a.
- 43:26What a.
- 43:27What a character.
- 43:28In fact, Neil, the other day.
- 43:32Was it Neil?
- 43:33Yeah, Neil.
- 43:34Neil posted a picture, I think in a Palace fan scene.
- 43:38And it was a picture of about 30 supporters.
- 43:43And.
- 43:44And it was.
- 43:44The club didn't have that much dough and they got the fans in, in the summer to paint, like, the stanchions, the terraces, the toilets thing.
- 43:55I went in, I went in, I was like 13 or 14 years old.
- 43:58And there's a picture of me there, 14 years old that Neil posted, mate.
- 44:03Yeah, like football, Football's not.
- 44:05Football will never be that again because it's just such a, like, globalized business now.
- 44:10But you look back and you think, me, man, that was like 50 years ago.
- 44:1450 years ago, you know, and, And I think I met you, Andy.
- 44:20I think I was 14 or 15 and yeah, lovely, lovely, lovely memories, mate.
