- 0:14Speaker 1: by M. C Y. Blackfeet Indian Stories by George B. Grinnell,
- 0:21Speaker 1: Chapter eleven, The First med Seine Lodge. The chief god
- 0:26Speaker 1: of the Blackfeet is the Sun. He made the world
- 0:29Speaker 1: and rules it, and to him the people pray. One
- 0:33Speaker 1: of his names Nappy, old Man. But there is another
- 0:37Speaker 1: Nappy who is very different from the Sun, and instead
- 0:40Speaker 1: of being great, wise, and wonderful, is foolish, mean, and contemptible.
- 0:48Speaker 1: We shall hear about him further on. Every year in summer,
- 0:53Speaker 1: about the time the beer is ripened, the Blackfeet used
- 0:56Speaker 1: to hold a great festival and sacrifice, which you call
- 0:59Speaker 1: the ceremony of the Medicine Lodge. This was a time
- 1:04Speaker 1: of happy meetings, of feasting, of giving presents. But besides
- 1:09Speaker 1: this rejoicing. Those men who wished to have good luck
- 1:12Speaker 1: in whatever they might undertake try to prove their pray
- 1:15Speaker 1: or sincere by sacrificing their bodies, torturing themselves in ways
- 1:20Speaker 1: that caused great suffering in ancient times, as we are
- 1:25Speaker 1: told in books of history, things like that used to
- 1:28Speaker 1: happen among many peoples all over the world. It was
- 1:32Speaker 1: a law that the building of the medicine lodge must
- 1:35Speaker 1: always be pledged by a good woman. If a woman
- 1:39Speaker 1: had a son or a husband a way at war
- 1:42Speaker 1: and feared that he was in danger, or if she
- 1:45Speaker 1: had a child that was sick and might die, she
- 1:48Speaker 1: might pray for the safety of the one she loved
- 1:51Speaker 1: and promised that if he returned or recovered, she would
- 1:55Speaker 1: build a medicine lodge. This pledge was made in a
- 1:58Speaker 1: loud voice, public in open air, so that all might
- 2:02Speaker 1: know the promise had been made. At the time appointed,
- 2:07Speaker 1: all the tribe came together and pitched that lodges in
- 2:09Speaker 1: a great circle, and within this circle the medicine lodge
- 2:13Speaker 1: was built. The ceremony lasted for four days and four nights,
- 2:19Speaker 1: during which time the woman who had promised to make
- 2:22Speaker 1: the medicine lodge neither ate nor drank, except once in sacrifice.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Different stories are told of how the first medicine lodge
- 2:32Speaker 1: came to be built. This is one of those stories.
- 2:37Speaker 1: In the earliest times, there was a man who had
- 2:40Speaker 1: a very beautiful daughter. Many young men wished to marry her,
- 2:45Speaker 1: but whenever she was asked, she shook her head and
- 2:48Speaker 1: said she did not wish to marry. Why is this,
- 2:51Speaker 1: said her father. Some of these young men are rich,
- 2:55Speaker 1: handsome and brave. Why should I marry? Replied the girl.
- 3:01Speaker 1: My father and mother take care of me. Our lodge
- 3:04Speaker 1: is good. The parfages are never empty. There are plenty
- 3:09Speaker 1: of tanned robes and soft furs for winter. What troubled me?
- 3:13Speaker 1: Then soon after the raven bearers held a dance. They
- 3:19Speaker 1: all painted themselves nicely and wore their finest ornaments, and
- 3:23Speaker 1: each one tried to dance the best. Afterwards, some of
- 3:27Speaker 1: them asked for this girl, but she said no. After that,
- 3:32Speaker 1: the bulls, the cap foxes, and others of the all
- 3:36Speaker 1: comrades held their dances, and many men who were rich,
- 3:40Speaker 1: and some great warriors axed this men for his daughter,
- 3:44Speaker 1: But to every one she said no. Then her father
- 3:48Speaker 1: was angry, and he said, why is this? All the
- 3:52Speaker 1: best men have asked for you and still say no.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Then the girl said, father, listened to me that above
- 4:00Speaker 1: person the Sun, said to me, do not marry any
- 4:04Speaker 1: of these men, for you belong to me. Listen to
- 4:08Speaker 1: what I say, and you shall be happy and leave
- 4:10Speaker 1: to a great age. And again he said to me,
- 4:14Speaker 1: take heed, you must not marry you are mine. Ah
- 4:19Speaker 1: replied her father. It must always be as he says,
- 4:23Speaker 1: And they spoke no more about it. There was a
- 4:27Speaker 1: poor young man. He was very poor. His father, his mother,
- 4:32Speaker 1: and all his relations were dead. He had no lodge,
- 4:36Speaker 1: no wife to tend his robes or make his moccasins.
- 4:40Speaker 1: His clothes were always old and worn. He had no home.
- 4:45Speaker 1: To day he stopped in one lodge, then tomorrow he
- 4:48Speaker 1: ate and slept in another. These he lived. He had
- 4:52Speaker 1: a good face, but on his cheek was a bad
- 4:55Speaker 1: scar After they had held those dances, some of the
- 5:00Speaker 1: young men met this poor scarface and they laughed at
- 5:03Speaker 1: him and said, why do not you ask that girl
- 5:07Speaker 1: to marry you? You are so rich and handsome. Scarface
- 5:11Speaker 1: did not laugh. He looked at them and said, I
- 5:14Speaker 1: will do as you say. I will go and ask her.
- 5:19Speaker 1: All the young men thought this was funny. They left
- 5:22Speaker 1: a good deal at scarface. As he was walking away.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Scarface went down by the river and waited there near
- 5:29Speaker 1: the place where the women went to get water. By
- 5:32Speaker 1: and by the girl came there. Scarface spoke to her
- 5:35Speaker 1: and said, girl, stop, I want to speak with you.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I do not wish to do anything secretly, but I
- 5:43Speaker 1: speak to you here openly, while the sun looks down
- 5:46Speaker 1: and all may see. Speak. Then said the girl. I
- 5:52Speaker 1: have seen the day, said Scarface, I have seen how
- 5:55Speaker 1: you have you used all those men who were young
- 5:58Speaker 1: and rich and brave. To day some of these young
- 6:01Speaker 1: men left and said to me, why do not you
- 6:04Speaker 1: ask her? I am poor. I have no lodge, no food,
- 6:09Speaker 1: no clothes, no robes, I have no relations. All of
- 6:13Speaker 1: them have died. Yet now to day I say to you,
- 6:17Speaker 1: take pity, be my wife. The girl hid her face
- 6:21Speaker 1: in her robe and brushed the ground of the point
- 6:23Speaker 1: of amarcasin, back and forth, back and forth, for she
- 6:28Speaker 1: was thinking. After a time she spoke and said, it
- 6:32Speaker 1: is true. I have refused all those rich young men.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Yet now a poor one asks me, and I am glad.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I will be your wife, and my people will be glad.
- 6:43Speaker 1: You are poor, but that does not matter. My father
- 6:47Speaker 1: will give you dogs. My mother will make us a lodge,
- 6:51Speaker 1: my relations will give us robes in furs. You will
- 6:54Speaker 1: no longer be poor. Then the young man was glad,
- 6:58Speaker 1: and he started forward to kiss her, but she put
- 7:01Speaker 1: out her hand and held him back and said, wait.
- 7:06Speaker 1: The Sun has spoken to me. He said, I may
- 7:09Speaker 1: not marry that I belonged to him, that if I
- 7:12Speaker 1: listen to him, I shall live to great age. So
- 7:15Speaker 1: now I say, go to the Sun. Say to him.
- 7:19Speaker 1: She whom you spoke with has listened to your words.
- 7:23Speaker 1: She has never done wrong, but now she wants to marry.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I want her for my wife. Ask him to take
- 7:30Speaker 1: that scar from your face. That will be his sign,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and I shall know he is pleased. But if he refuses,
- 7:38Speaker 1: or if he cannot find his lodge, then do not
- 7:40Speaker 1: return to me. Oh, cried Scarface. At first her words
- 7:46Speaker 1: were good. I was glad, but now it is dark.
- 7:50Speaker 1: My heart is dead. Where is that far off lodge?
- 7:54Speaker 1: Where is the trail that no one yet has traveled?
- 7:58Speaker 1: Take courage, Take courage, said the girl softly, and she
- 8:02Speaker 1: went on to her lodge. Scarface was very unhappy. He
- 8:07Speaker 1: did not know what to do. He sat down, covered
- 8:10Speaker 1: his face with his robe, and tried to think. At length,
- 8:14Speaker 1: he stood up and went to an old woman who
- 8:16Speaker 1: had been kind to him, and said to her, pity me,
- 8:20Speaker 1: I am very poor. I am going away on a
- 8:23Speaker 1: long journey. Make me some moccasins. Where are you going
- 8:28Speaker 1: from from the camp, asked the old woman. I do
- 8:32Speaker 1: not know where I am going. He replied, I am
- 8:34Speaker 1: in trouble, but I cannot talk about it. This old
- 8:38Speaker 1: woman had a kind heart. She made him moccasin seven pairs,
- 8:43Speaker 1: and gave him also a sack of food pimikan dried
- 8:46Speaker 1: meat and back fat. All alone and with a sad heart,
- 8:51Speaker 1: Scarface climbed the bluff that overlooked the valley, and when
- 8:55Speaker 1: he had reached the top, turned to look back through
- 8:58Speaker 1: the camp. He wondered if he should ever see it again,
- 9:03Speaker 1: if he should return to the girl and to the people.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Pity me, old son, he prayed, and turning away, he
- 9:11Speaker 1: set off to look for the trail to the Sun's lodge.
- 9:15Speaker 1: For many days he went on. He crossed great prairies
- 9:19Speaker 1: and followed up timbered rivers, and crossed the mountains. Every
- 9:24Speaker 1: day his sack of food grew lighter. But as he
- 9:27Speaker 1: went along he looked for berries and roots, and sometimes
- 9:30Speaker 1: he killed an animal. These things gave him food. One
- 9:35Speaker 1: night he came to the home of a wolf. Ha
- 9:38Speaker 1: said the wolf, what are you doing so far from
- 9:41Speaker 1: your home? I am looking for the place where the
- 9:45Speaker 1: Sun lives, replied Scareface. I have been sent to speak
- 9:48Speaker 1: with him. I have traveled over much country, said the wolf.
- 9:54Speaker 1: I know all the prairies, the valleys and the mountains,
- 9:58Speaker 1: but I have never seen the Sun's home. But with
- 10:01Speaker 1: a moment, I know a person who is very wise
- 10:04Speaker 1: and who may be able to tell the road, ask
- 10:07Speaker 1: the bear. Next day, Scarface went on again, stopping now
- 10:12Speaker 1: and then to rest and to pick berries. And when
- 10:14Speaker 1: night came he was at the bear's lodge. Where is
- 10:19Speaker 1: your home, asked the bear. Why are you traveling so
- 10:22Speaker 1: far along? Ah, replied the man, I have come to
- 10:26Speaker 1: you for help. Pity me because of what the girl
- 10:31Speaker 1: said to me. I am looking for the Sun. I
- 10:33Speaker 1: wish to ask him for her. I do not know
- 10:37Speaker 1: where he lives, said the bear. I have traveled by
- 10:40Speaker 1: many rivers, and I know the mountains. Yet I have
- 10:44Speaker 1: not seen his lodge. Farther on, there is some one,
- 10:47Speaker 1: that striped face, who knows a great deal. Ask him.
- 10:52Speaker 1: When the young man got there, the badger was in
- 10:54Speaker 1: his hole, but Scarface called to him, Oh, Connie striped face,
- 11:01Speaker 1: I wish to speak with you. The badger put his
- 11:04Speaker 1: head out of the hole and said, what do you want,
- 11:07Speaker 1: my brother. I wish to find the Sun's home, said Scarface.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I wish to speak with him. I do not know
- 11:15Speaker 1: where he lives, answered the badger, I never travel very far.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Over there in the timber is the wolverine. He's always
- 11:24Speaker 1: traveling about and ows many things. Perhaps he can tell you.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Scarface went over to the forest and looked all about
- 11:33Speaker 1: for the wolverine, but could not see him. So he
- 11:36Speaker 1: sat down on a log to rest alas alas. He cried, wolverine,
- 11:43Speaker 1: take pity on me. My food is gone, my magazines
- 11:47Speaker 1: are worn out. I fear I shall die. Some One
- 11:52Speaker 1: close to him said, what is it, my brother, And
- 11:56Speaker 1: looking around, he saw the wolverine sitting there. She whom
- 12:01Speaker 1: I wish to marry, belongs to the Sun, said Scarface.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I am trying to find where he lives, so that
- 12:07Speaker 1: I may ask him for her. Ah, said the wolverine,
- 12:12Speaker 1: I know where he lives. It is nearly night now,
- 12:15Speaker 1: but tomorrow I will show you the trail to the
- 12:17Speaker 1: big water. He lives on the other side of it.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Early in the morning, they set out, and the wolverine
- 12:25Speaker 1: showed Scarface the trail, and he followed it until he
- 12:29Speaker 1: came to the water's edge. When he looked out over it,
- 12:34Speaker 1: his heart almost stopped. Never before had any one seen
- 12:39Speaker 1: such a great water. The other side could not be seen,
- 12:42Speaker 1: and there was no wind to it. Scarface sat down
- 12:46Speaker 1: on the shore. This seemed the end. His food was gone,
- 12:51Speaker 1: his moccasins were on out. He had no longer strength,
- 12:54Speaker 1: no longer courage. His heart was sick. I cannot crow
- 13:00Speaker 1: this great water, he said. I cannot return to the
- 13:03Speaker 1: people here by this water. I shall die. Yet, even
- 13:09Speaker 1: as he thought this, helpers were near. Two swans came
- 13:13Speaker 1: swimming up to the shore and said to him, why
- 13:17Speaker 1: have you come here? What are you doing? It is
- 13:21Speaker 1: very fine to the place where your people live. I
- 13:25Speaker 1: have come here to die, replied Scareface. Far away in
- 13:29Speaker 1: my country is a beautiful girl. I want to marry her,
- 13:33Speaker 1: but she belongs to the sun. So I set out
- 13:36Speaker 1: to find him and ask him for her. I have
- 13:39Speaker 1: traveled many days. My food is gone. I cannot go back.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I cannot cross this great water. So I must die. No,
- 13:48Speaker 1: said the swans. It shall not be so across this
- 13:52Speaker 1: water is the home of that above person. Get on
- 13:55Speaker 1: our backs and we will take you there. Scarfaced stood up.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Now he felt strong and full of courage. He waded
- 14:04Speaker 1: out into the water and lay down on the swan's backs,
- 14:07Speaker 1: and they swam away. It was a fearful journey, for
- 14:11Speaker 1: that water was deep and black, and in it lived
- 14:14Speaker 1: strange people and great animals, which might reach up and
- 14:18Speaker 1: seize a person and pull him down under the water.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Yet the swans carried Scarface safely to the other side.
- 14:26Speaker 1: There was seen a broad, hard trail leading back from
- 14:29Speaker 1: the water's edge. There, said the swans. You are now
- 14:33Speaker 1: close to the Sun's lodge. Follow that trail and soon
- 14:38Speaker 1: you will see it. Scarface started to walk along the trail,
- 14:43Speaker 1: and after he had gone a little way, he came
- 14:45Speaker 1: to some beautiful things lying in the trail. There was
- 14:49Speaker 1: a war shirt, a shield, a bowl, and a quiver
- 14:53Speaker 1: of arrows. He had never seen such fine weapons. He
- 14:58Speaker 1: looked at them, but he did not touch, and at
- 15:01Speaker 1: last walked round them and went on a little farther along.
- 15:06Speaker 1: He met a young man, a very handsome person. His
- 15:10Speaker 1: hair was long, his clothing was made of strange skins,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and his moccasins were soled with bright feathers. The young
- 15:18Speaker 1: man spoke to him and asked, did you see some
- 15:21Speaker 1: weapons lying in the trail? Yes, replied Cafface. I saw them.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Did you touch them, said the young man. No, said Scaface.
- 15:32Speaker 1: I suppose some one had left them there, and I
- 15:35Speaker 1: did not touch them. You do not meddle with the
- 15:39Speaker 1: property of others, said the young man. What is your
- 15:43Speaker 1: name and where are you going, Scafes told him. Then
- 15:47Speaker 1: said the young man, my name is Early Riser, the
- 15:52Speaker 1: morning Star. The Sun is my father. Come. I will
- 15:56Speaker 1: take you to our lodge. My father's not at home now,
- 16:00Speaker 1: but he will return at night. At length, they came
- 16:03Speaker 1: to the lodge. It was large and handsome, and on
- 16:07Speaker 1: it were painted strange medics and animals. On a tripod.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Behind the lodge were the Sun's weapons and his war clothing.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Scarface was ashamed to go into the lodge, but Morning
- 16:19Speaker 1: Star said, friend, do not be afraid. We are glad
- 16:23Speaker 1: you have come. When they went in, a woman was
- 16:27Speaker 1: sitting there, the Moon, the Sun's wife and the mother
- 16:31Speaker 1: of morning Star. She spoke to Scarface kindly and gave
- 16:35Speaker 1: him food to eat, and when he had eaten, she asked,
- 16:40Speaker 1: why have you come so far from your people. So
- 16:43Speaker 1: Scarface told her about the beautiful girl that he wished
- 16:46Speaker 1: to marry, and said she belongs to the Sun. I
- 16:50Speaker 1: have come to ask him for her. When it was
- 16:54Speaker 1: almost night and time for the sun to come home,
- 16:57Speaker 1: the Moon hid Scarface under a pile of rows. As
- 17:01Speaker 1: soon as the Sun got to the doorway, he said,
- 17:04Speaker 1: a strange person is here. Yes, father, said morning Star,
- 17:09Speaker 1: a young man has come to see you. He's a
- 17:12Speaker 1: good young man, for he found some of my things
- 17:14Speaker 1: in the trail and did not touch them. Scarface came
- 17:18Speaker 1: out from under the robes, and the Sun entered the
- 17:21Speaker 1: lodge and sat down. He spoke to Scarface and said,
- 17:25Speaker 1: I am glad you have come to our lodge. Stay
- 17:28Speaker 1: with us as long as you like. Sometimes my son
- 17:31Speaker 1: is lonely. Be his friend. The next day, the two
- 17:36Speaker 1: young men were talking about going hunting, and the Moon
- 17:38Speaker 1: spoke to Scarface and said, go with my son where
- 17:42Speaker 1: you like, but do not hunt near that big water.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Do not let him go there. That is the home
- 17:49Speaker 1: of great birds with long, sharp bills. They kill people.
- 17:54Speaker 1: I have had many sons, but these birds have killed
- 17:57Speaker 1: them all. Only morning Stars left. Scarface stayed a long
- 18:02Speaker 1: time in the Sun's lodge and every day went hunting
- 18:05Speaker 1: with morning Star. One day they came near the water
- 18:09Speaker 1: and saw the big birds. Come on, said morning Star,
- 18:12Speaker 1: let us go and kill those birds. No, no, said Scarface,
- 18:17Speaker 1: we must not go there. Those are terrible birds. They
- 18:21Speaker 1: will kill us. Morning Star would not listen. He ran
- 18:25Speaker 1: toward the water, and Scarface ran after him, for he
- 18:28Speaker 1: knew that he must kill the birds and save the
- 18:30Speaker 1: boy's life. He ran ahead of morning Star and met
- 18:33Speaker 1: the birds which were coming to fight, and killed every
- 18:37Speaker 1: one of them with his spear. Not one was left.
- 18:42Speaker 1: The young man cut off the heads of the birds
- 18:44Speaker 1: and carried them home. And when Morningstar's mother heard what
- 18:47Speaker 1: they had done, and they showed her the birds heads,
- 18:51Speaker 1: she was glad. She cried over the two young men
- 18:54Speaker 1: and called Scarface my son. And when the Sun came
- 18:58Speaker 1: home at night, she told him of about it, and
- 19:00Speaker 1: he too was glad, my son. He said to Scafface,
- 19:05Speaker 1: I will not forget what you have this day done
- 19:07Speaker 1: for me. Tell me now what I can do for you.
- 19:10Speaker 1: What is your trouble? Alas Alas replied scafface, pity me.
- 19:18Speaker 1: I came here to ask you for that girl. I
- 19:20Speaker 1: want to marry her, I asked her, and she was glad.
- 19:24Speaker 1: But she says that she belongs to you, and that
- 19:27Speaker 1: you told her not to marry. What you say is true,
- 19:31Speaker 1: replied the sun. I have seen the days and all
- 19:34Speaker 1: that she has done. Now I give it to you.
- 19:37Speaker 1: She is yours. I am glad that she has been wise,
- 19:40Speaker 1: and I know that she has never done wrong. The
- 19:43Speaker 1: son takes care of good women. They shall live a
- 19:46Speaker 1: long life, and so shall their husbands and children. Now
- 19:51Speaker 1: soon you will go home. I wish to tell you something,
- 19:54Speaker 1: and you must be wise and listen. I am the
- 19:58Speaker 1: only chief everything is. I made the earth, the mountains,
- 20:03Speaker 1: the prairies, the rivers, and the forests. I made the
- 20:07Speaker 1: people and all the animals. This is why I say
- 20:11Speaker 1: that I alone am chief. I can never die. It
- 20:16Speaker 1: is true. The winter makes me old and weak, but
- 20:19Speaker 1: every summer I grow young again. What one of all
- 20:23Speaker 1: the animals is the smartest, the sun went on. It
- 20:27Speaker 1: is a raven, for he always finds food. He is
- 20:30Speaker 1: never hungry. Which one of all the animals is the
- 20:33Speaker 1: most to be reverenced? It is the buffalo of all
- 20:37Speaker 1: the animals. I like him best. He's for the people.
- 20:41Speaker 1: He's your food and your shelter. What part of his
- 20:44Speaker 1: body is sacred? It is a tongue that belongs to me.
- 20:48Speaker 1: What else is sacred? Berries? Day two are mine? Come
- 20:53Speaker 1: with me now and see the world. The Sun took
- 20:57Speaker 1: Scarface to the edge of the sky, and they looked down.
- 21:00Speaker 1: And so the world it is flatt and round, and
- 21:03Speaker 1: all around the edge it goes straight down, Then said
- 21:07Speaker 1: the Sun. If any man is sick or in danger,
- 21:11Speaker 1: his wife may promise to build me a lodge. If
- 21:13Speaker 1: he recovers. If the woman is good, then I shall
- 21:17Speaker 1: be pleased and help the man, But if she is
- 21:20Speaker 1: not good, or if she lies, then I shall be angry.
- 21:24Speaker 1: You shall build the lodge like the world round with walls.
- 21:28Speaker 1: But first you must build a sweat lodge of one
- 21:31Speaker 1: hundred sticks. It shall be arched like the sky, and
- 21:35Speaker 1: one half of it shall be painted red for me.
- 21:38Speaker 1: The other half you shall paint black for the night.
- 21:42Speaker 1: He told Scarface all about making the medicine lodge, and
- 21:46Speaker 1: when he had finished speaking, he rubbed some medicine on
- 21:49Speaker 1: a young man's face, and the scar that had been
- 21:52Speaker 1: there disappeared. He gave him two raven feathers, saying these
- 21:58Speaker 1: are a sign for the girl that I gave her
- 22:00Speaker 1: to you. They must always be worn by the husband
- 22:04Speaker 1: of the woman who builds a medicine lodge. Now Scarface
- 22:08Speaker 1: was ready to return home. The sunny morning star gave
- 22:12Speaker 1: him many good presents. The moon cried and kissed him
- 22:16Speaker 1: and was sorry to see him go. Then the sun
- 22:19Speaker 1: showed him the short trail. It was a wolf road,
- 22:23Speaker 1: the milky way. He followed it and soon reached the ground.
- 22:29Speaker 1: It was a very hot day. All the large skins
- 22:33Speaker 1: were raised and the people sat in the shade. There
- 22:36Speaker 1: was a chief, a very generous man, who all day
- 22:39Speaker 1: long was calling out for feasts, and people kept coming
- 22:42Speaker 1: to his lodge to eat and smoke with him. Early
- 22:45Speaker 1: in the morning, the chief saw sitting on a boat
- 22:47Speaker 1: near by a person close wrapped in his robe. All
- 22:51Speaker 1: day long, this person sat there and did not move.
- 22:55Speaker 1: When it was almost night, the chief said, that person
- 22:58Speaker 1: had sat there all day in the strong heat and
- 23:01Speaker 1: has not eaten or drunk. Perhaps he is a stranger.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Go and ask him to come to my lodge. Some
- 23:09Speaker 1: young men ran up to the person and said to him,
- 23:12Speaker 1: why have you sat here all day in the great heat.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Come to the shade of the lodges. The chief asks
- 23:18Speaker 1: you to eat with them. The person rose and threw
- 23:21Speaker 1: off his robe, and the young man were surprised. He
- 23:25Speaker 1: wore fine clothing. His bow, shield and other weapons were
- 23:29Speaker 1: of strange make. But they knew his face. Although this
- 23:33Speaker 1: car was gone, and they ran ahead, shouting, this car
- 23:36Speaker 1: faced poor young man has come. He is poor no
- 23:39Speaker 1: longer this car and his face is gone. All the
- 23:44Speaker 1: people hurried out to see him and to ask him questions,
- 23:48Speaker 1: where did you get all these fine things? He did
- 23:51Speaker 1: not answer. There in the crowd stood that young woman,
- 23:54Speaker 1: and taking the two raven feathers from his head, he
- 23:57Speaker 1: gave them to her and said, the trail was long,
- 24:01Speaker 1: and I nearly died, but by those helpers I found
- 24:04Speaker 1: his lodge. He is glad he sends these feathers to you.
- 24:09Speaker 1: They are the sign. Great was her gladness. Then they
- 24:14Speaker 1: were married and made the first medicine lodge. As the
- 24:18Speaker 1: Sun had said, the Sun was glad. He gave them
- 24:21Speaker 1: great age. They were never sick. When they were very old.
- 24:26Speaker 1: One morning their children called to them awake, rise, and eat.
- 24:31Speaker 1: They did not move in the night, together in sleep
- 24:34Speaker 1: without pain. Their shadows had departed to the sand hills,
- 24:39Speaker 1: and of chapter eleven
