- 0:00Speaker 1: Now joining me on the line. You may recall last
- 0:02Speaker 1: week I caught up with my next guest last week
- 0:06Speaker 1: as well and spoke about some of those concerns, and
- 0:08Speaker 1: he joins me on the line again this morning. His
- 0:10Speaker 1: name is John Koenig. He's the owner of John John's
- 0:13Speaker 1: ice Cream. Good morning to you, John, Okay, how yeah,
- 0:17Speaker 1: really well, thank you so much for your time now, John,
- 0:21Speaker 1: I know that we were talking yesterday, of course, a
- 0:23Speaker 1: lot about anti social behavior on the show. How have
- 0:27Speaker 1: things been going for you over the last week or
- 0:29Speaker 1: so since we last spoke.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Over the last week, I guess there has been a
- 0:34Speaker 2: bit more police present. The police came down, we didn't
- 0:40Speaker 2: have a meeting on site, and then just their plan
- 0:43Speaker 2: of what they wanted to do for the city. That
- 0:47Speaker 2: meeting happened on Wednesday, and I did request for a
- 0:50Speaker 2: CCTV trailer to be put into the park. That request
- 0:54Speaker 2: was put through Wednesday afternoon and then was granted and
- 0:58Speaker 2: then the trailer went in Thursday. So there was action
- 1:00Speaker 2: taking immediately, which was good to see.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yeah, that is really good to hear.
- 1:04Speaker 3: John.
- 1:05Speaker 1: How's it going there now that that CCTV trailers there?
- 1:10Speaker 3: Over the last week, I think the severe anti social
- 1:12Speaker 3: behavior has decreased from what I can see, but there's
- 1:16Speaker 3: also been a lot of the police presence as well
- 1:18Speaker 3: going in through the park, larryk here and TPS also
- 1:23Speaker 3: going through as well. But then on Sunday and night
- 1:26Speaker 3: we were closing up and then it was told by
- 1:29Speaker 3: the TPS guards that there was a break in at
- 1:31Speaker 3: one of the cafes and then those youths were sitting
- 1:34Speaker 3: at the front of my shop, so luckily we were closed.
- 1:38Speaker 3: And then yesterday I locked up to work. In the
- 1:42Speaker 3: buildings across the road they had graffiti done all over them,
- 1:45Speaker 3: and then obviously what happened at Woolli's. So even though
- 1:48Speaker 3: it might seem like it's a little bit better, yeah,
- 1:51Speaker 3: just different pockets not so great as well well.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And it's just, you know, it's just one of the
- 1:56Speaker 1: many things that you're having to grapple with, and you'd
- 1:59Speaker 1: gone through, you know, some of the anti social behavior
- 2:02Speaker 1: and different issues that you've had to deal with with
- 2:05Speaker 1: us last week, and I know that you've made a
- 2:08Speaker 1: number of sort of or taken a number of different
- 2:10Speaker 1: steps in an effort to try to make your business
- 2:13Speaker 1: more secure and to try to stop that anti social behavior.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Again.
- 2:20Speaker 1: You and I spoke last week and you'd called for
- 2:21Speaker 1: a few different things to happen. Have you seen much
- 2:24Speaker 1: change since you and I spoke last week? Aside from
- 2:27Speaker 1: that CCTV trailer.
- 2:30Speaker 3: I haven't really spoke. Besides the TV trailer, I haven't
- 2:34Speaker 3: really spoken to I was just waiting for the meeting
- 2:36Speaker 3: to address all those concerns because it was just like otherwise.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I'm still running a business and doing twelve for fifteen
- 2:42Speaker 3: hour days. So I didn't want to get bogged down
- 2:43Speaker 3: in meetings. I thought I have it all said at once,
- 2:47Speaker 3: and then the people can speak as well and just
- 2:50Speaker 3: try to have an approach where government, NGO's police, landlord's,
- 2:56Speaker 3: business owners and in the wider community. It's something that
- 2:59Speaker 3: we all need to work together with.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And so that meeting, that public, that public meeting, it's
- 3:04Speaker 1: happening tonight, isn't it.
- 3:06Speaker 3: That's okay. So it's at five pm at Tameron Park,
- 3:08Speaker 3: which is a part next to John John's. Yeah, and
- 3:11Speaker 3: I think there's Shunk support. There's ministers or their advisors
- 3:14Speaker 3: are coming down. The police are coming down as well,
- 3:16Speaker 3: and counsel.
- 3:17Speaker 1: That is good to hear. Any idea how many you
- 3:20Speaker 1: know how many other business owners or how many other
- 3:22Speaker 1: Territorians you've got turning up at this point.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I am not too sure. Most business owners that I've
- 3:28Speaker 3: spoken to will try to attend, but like as well,
- 3:32Speaker 3: everyone's running a business and I'm not really too sure.
- 3:35Speaker 2: But from what I do.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Though, is friends getting back to me that just from
- 3:40Speaker 3: the conversations that I've had on radio, a lot of
- 3:43Speaker 3: people are talking. And then when people do come and
- 3:45Speaker 3: say hello, they were often or not, they'll tell me
- 3:47Speaker 3: that they have heard the conversation is starting and a
- 3:50Speaker 3: lot of people are set up and sick of it. Yeah,
- 3:53Speaker 3: that's interesting. Thing is there's been two customers that have
- 3:57Speaker 3: come to my shop every day at five pm for
- 4:02Speaker 3: the last six weeks, and yesterday I was sitting down
- 4:04Speaker 3: and having a chat with him and they said, in
- 4:05Speaker 3: the six weeks that they've been here every single day there,
- 4:09Speaker 3: it's progressively gotten worse and the just tourists to do
- 4:12Speaker 3: on and if they can see it, and as that
- 4:16Speaker 3: note that was noticeable for them, then it goes to
- 4:21Speaker 3: show something. And then we just happen to be at
- 4:23Speaker 3: the Bullies right before that incident.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So this is the thing, you know, it's scary for people.
- 4:29Speaker 1: It's utterly scary if you were there when that incident unfolded.
- 4:33Speaker 1: But it's also like the kind of behavior that you
- 4:36Speaker 1: just cannot tolerate. If we start to tolerate that behavior,
- 4:40Speaker 1: walk past it, think that it's okay, or see it
- 4:43Speaker 1: as being normal, it is absolutely not normal. But it
- 4:47Speaker 1: is also so entirely frightening for people who are visitors
- 4:50Speaker 1: to the Northern Territory or to Darwin.
- 4:53Speaker 3: One hundred percent. I could not agree with that statement
- 4:56Speaker 3: even more. If tourists are coming through and they're not
- 4:59Speaker 3: used to seeing this sort of thing, then like their
- 5:02Speaker 3: first instance is like what are the government doing? What
- 5:05Speaker 3: is the police doing? And then like you've got to
- 5:06Speaker 3: educate them because they just see such a bad incidents,
- 5:11Speaker 3: and then the referral of what they're going to go
- 5:13Speaker 3: back home and say to the people. But I've got
- 5:15Speaker 3: friends who live and work in the city, and the
- 5:18Speaker 3: people who live in the city don't shop at Willie's
- 5:21Speaker 3: in the city. They'd rather go to than likelist shop.
- 5:25Speaker 3: It's just like, why are you driving twenty minutes out
- 5:27Speaker 3: of the city to do your shopping and then driving home?
- 5:30Speaker 3: It's ridiculous. Well, This is exactly based on safety.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah, it's got to be cleaned up, it's got to
- 5:35Speaker 1: be sorted out.
- 5:36Speaker 3: John.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So with the meeting this afternoon, mate, can anyone come
- 5:40Speaker 1: along or who exactly you know? Who are you hoping
- 5:43Speaker 1: it tends anyone?
- 5:45Speaker 3: I mean, anyone can come down and support because it's
- 5:48Speaker 3: going to be a community why push, And it's at
- 5:51Speaker 3: the I said the other day, it's at the boiling
- 5:53Speaker 3: point and unless something gets done, it's only going to
- 5:57Speaker 3: get worse. And where you really need to get lift
- 5:59Speaker 3: in the button the moment. So the more support the better,
- 6:02Speaker 3: I'd say.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Now, what are you hoping? What outcomes are you hoping
- 6:05Speaker 1: for from this meeting?
- 6:07Speaker 3: Well, the thing that I do want to say, it's
- 6:10Speaker 3: not a meeting to bash anyone, or I shouldn't they
- 6:13Speaker 3: bash is not the right word, is that it's not
- 6:16Speaker 3: too point fingers and took the blame game like that
- 6:18Speaker 3: that's already been done and that's not working. What needs
- 6:21Speaker 3: to happen is the whole community approach to get things
- 6:25Speaker 3: sorted and the things that I'm highlighting is that. But
- 6:30Speaker 3: you know, safety is one thing, but whether or not
- 6:33Speaker 3: extra lighting so people feel safer more patrols is, which
- 6:37Speaker 3: you know they're already working on and just cleaning up
- 6:40Speaker 3: the problem areas. So I do know the park is
- 6:42Speaker 3: one of the problem areas, and that's why I'm holding
- 6:44Speaker 3: that meeting there, and how can we address it? What
- 6:46Speaker 3: are the solutions, what's worked previously and what hasn't worked?
- 6:49Speaker 3: And the CCTV one is a week trial already seems
- 6:52Speaker 3: to be working. But when no one's around, does the
- 6:54Speaker 3: antisocial behavior increase or decrease? I can't tell. I can't say.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I think it's a really good idea that this meeting happens,
- 7:02Speaker 1: and your spot on. You know, we've tried every tact
- 7:05Speaker 1: when it comes to this antisocial behavior and nothing seems
- 7:08Speaker 1: to be changing. So I think that it's a really
- 7:10Speaker 1: good thing if everybody gets together and we try our
- 7:13Speaker 1: best to make sure that our voices are heard. So
- 7:16Speaker 1: I would certainly encourage anybody you know who wants to
- 7:20Speaker 1: show their support for our Northern Territory business owners who
- 7:23Speaker 1: are based in the CBD, for wonderful people like yourself,
- 7:27Speaker 1: get down there Tamarin Park, five o'clock this afternoon.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Thank you very much, and I appreciate all the support
