Latest / Founder Unfiltered - What Founders Think But Never Say / AI and the Founder Opportunity (Pt 1 of 4): The Macro, the Opportunity, and the Fear
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to another episode of Founder Unfiltered.
- 0:03My name is Bradley Jacobs. I'm your host, the founder and
- 0:06CEO of my lands. Today is episode one in a four
- 0:11part miniseries on what's coming in the world of AI, how you can
- 0:17think about this and embrace this as a founder, and how I
- 0:22truly believe the world is changing right before our very
- 0:25eyes. So we're going to get right into
- 0:28it. My read on this, and I want to
- 0:31emphasize it's my read. I am a person, a man who's
- 0:34looking at the world, reading the news just like you are, and
- 0:37drawing conclusions based on everything I'm seeing from the
- 0:41front lines. I'm using these AI tools.
- 0:43I'm spending time and energy and money doing training, staying up
- 0:47to date, seeing what's coming, hearing about layoffs.
- 0:50I'm in the same boat you are. So this is my educated take, but
- 0:54it's just my take. So I want to start there.
- 0:57But what I'm seeing is, and we're all seeing it, right?
- 1:00These massive tech companies which completely dominate the
- 1:04market, right? They make up the vast majority
- 1:06of the market cap of the S&P 500 of course of the NASDAQ is that
- 1:11they need, it's simple, they need fewer people to get the job
- 1:14done that they were doing with 10s or hundreds of thousands of
- 1:19employees and they don't they don't need those people anymore.
- 1:22And frankly, we're in the very, very infant early stages of the
- 1:28AI revolution like we are in the first two to three years of
- 1:32this. You can only imagine what this
- 1:34looks like in five or ten years when these AI solutions are
- 1:39infinitely more built out than they are now.
- 1:41This is complete baby stages and we're already seeing these
- 1:46layoffs by the thousands. Certain companies are are laying
- 1:49off thousands and thousands of people.
- 1:52So the question ends up being what happens to those people and
- 1:56what is possible now with AI? So like AI causes all of these
- 2:02layoffs and a lot of people are really, really nervous and
- 2:05fearful about that. I'm just, I'm just losing jobs
- 2:09across the entire economy. And I think that that's
- 2:12misguided. I'm going to be honest.
- 2:14And maybe I'm choosing the optimistic outlook because the
- 2:17pessimistic outcome just doesn't serve anybody to worry about
- 2:21that. Like it just doesn't, it doesn't
- 2:23serve you to be worried about it.
- 2:25So I'm choosing what I truly believe will happen, and it is
- 2:29an optimistic take. And the optimistic take that I
- 2:32have is 1, AI will create tons of jobs, just like the Internet
- 2:37created tons of jobs, or everybody was worried about, you
- 2:41know, even cell phones. There used to be tons of jobs
- 2:43around operating landlines and things like that.
- 2:46Obviously not at the same scale, but every new technology does
- 2:49create jobs. So that is one thing.
- 2:51There's going to be all these new companies that are required
- 2:54to uphold the AI infrastructure, those companies that really
- 2:58don't exist or are in their complete infancy today.
- 3:02They will hire like crazy and they will grow the job force
- 3:06significantly, but I don't think it's going to replace all of the
- 3:10employees currently being laid off today and over the next 5-10
- 3:13years. What I do believe is going to
- 3:16happen is there's this opportunity to go build your own
- 3:21thing as a niche, one or two person or super small headcount
- 3:26business niche offering. Because right now these bigger
- 3:31companies have these somewhat cookie cutter solutions.
- 3:35And the reason that this exists is because historically, it's
- 3:39been challenging and expensive to build software, right?
- 3:43You needed a team, you need a software development background,
- 3:46you needed tons of money, and you don't need those things
- 3:49anymore. And you're going to need them
- 3:50less and less and less as the tools get more mature.
- 3:53So when you have that interest, that expertise in cooking,
- 3:59fitness, beauty, fashion, whatever it is, you can build a
- 4:03custom tailored solution for a very specific niche.
- 4:07So let's think about, you know, a signal, a single pregnant
- 4:13woman in her early 40s and she has all of these needs that
- 4:17another customer might not have. You could build a specific
- 4:22solution for her and her archetype, which might only be
- 4:26I'm going to make it up a few 1000 or 20,000 people, whatever.
- 4:30But you can make them a custom tailored solution.
- 4:33And if you had 100 people and you're charging them 200 bucks a
- 4:37month, right? You're making $20,000 a month.
- 4:40And they don't have custom tailored solutions now because
- 4:43these big businesses don't go serve that population just
- 4:46doesn't make sense. It's not big enough for the big
- 4:48business, but it is big enough for an individual.
- 4:52So that's what I believe is going to happen and it gets me
- 4:55really, really, really excited because we don't need to spend
- 5:02605040 hours a week, which is a huge percentage of our lives
- 5:08being miserable. I get absolutely kills me when
- 5:12people are living for the weekend because you're living
- 5:14for two out of seven days. When you extrapolate that I'm
- 5:18not going to do the math because it actually makes me incredibly
- 5:20uncomfortable and upset is that people are fucking miserable in
- 5:25their lives. And they are doing it because
- 5:27they think they have to and because they're scared.
- 5:30And we're going to talk about the fear in a minute, but I
- 5:34absolutely cannot stand watching people be miserable in jobs that
- 5:38they hate for decades and decades and decades that ends up
- 5:41making up the majority of their life.
- 5:44It just absolutely kills me. And it's it's unnecessary.
- 5:47And I say it's unnecessary, not because it's easy.
- 5:50The alternative, right? Going out on your own, building
- 5:53your own thing, being your own boss is a really challenging
- 5:56path. And I will absolutely
- 5:58acknowledge it is not for everybody.
- 6:00But the alternative of being in a job that you are miserable in
- 6:06just does not make sense to me. Now, if you love your job and
- 6:09you love your coworkers and the stability works for you and you
- 6:11have a great boss and you're behind your company mission and
- 6:14it reaches that level of excitement and fulfillment and
- 6:17connection within you, amazing. Like, great.
- 6:20I'm not saying everybody should quit their job and go out on
- 6:22their own, but I'm saying the people that are miserable, it's
- 6:25just it's not required. You do not have to be miserable.
- 6:28And this is a big, big driving force for me around my lands,
- 6:34around the work that I do, around the work that it will
- 6:36continue to do to really support individuals, entrepreneurs,
- 6:40founders. It's the reason for this
- 6:41podcast, frankly, is because I'm so passionate about this concept
- 6:46and I am building tools to support founders and making the
- 6:49founder journey more sustainable.
- 6:51That's what my Lance is. And my my long term vision is a
- 6:55suite of tools, a movement, workshops, masterminds, speaking
- 6:59books, everything that supports the founder journey.
- 7:03That's what this is about for me.
- 7:04Like I want people living fulfilling, exciting lives,
- 7:07solving problems they really truly care about.
- 7:09That's what life to me. What, what outside of
- 7:13relationships, which is probably the number one thing that makes
- 7:16a life worth living. The second thing is purpose and
- 7:19fulfillment behind what you're doing, what your contribution to
- 7:23the world. So I could go in that tangent
- 7:26for a while, but I'm going to stop there.
- 7:28What prevents most people from going out and following a
- 7:34passion? You can talk about the
- 7:36logistics. Oh, I need the money to do it.
- 7:38I need the space, I need the time.
- 7:40But what really it ends up being is a mindset around fear.
- 7:45It is a fear of rejection, a fear of judgement, a fear of
- 7:50actually making it big and being really successful.
- 7:52Like what does it look like if I have it all And all of those
- 7:57things that there's an imposter thoughts.
- 7:59Imposter syndrome is another really big one.
- 8:01Like why me? To what extent do I have
- 8:04credibility, right? There's incredible amounts of
- 8:07imposter syndrome out there. And the best in the world, the
- 8:14highest performers in the world still have imposter thoughts.
- 8:18And I'm going to just read you 2 quotes.
- 8:20The first one is from Lady Gaga, world renowned performer.
- 8:25Her quote is I still sometimes feel like a loser kid in high
- 8:28school and I just have to pick myself up and tell myself that
- 8:32I'm a superstar every morning so I can get through this day and
- 8:36be for my fans what they need me to be.
- 8:39Another one from Emma Watson, right?
- 8:42World renowned actress. Now when I receive recognition
- 8:47for my acting, I feel incredibly uncomfortable.
- 8:49I tend to turn in on myself. I feel like an imposter.
- 8:53Any moment someone's going to find out I'm a total fraud and
- 8:56that I don't deserve any of what I've achieved.
- 9:00And I share these two quotes with you because it doesn't
- 9:02matter how big and successful you are, every single person on
- 9:06the planet has some version of why me, Some imposter, some self
- 9:12doubt, self judgement. It just exists in all of us.
- 9:16And the people that go out and make it big anyway or add that
- 9:20contribution to the world anyway are the people that acknowledge
- 9:23the fear and do it anyway. They just find a way through it
- 9:28through coaching, through support, through exercises,
- 9:30work, whatever it is. But it's a mindset that says I'm
- 9:34going to go out and do this anyway despite the fear that I
- 9:38have. And for me specifically, my fear
- 9:41is playing a really big game. And what happens if I play a
- 9:45really big game in my life and I impact millions of people?
- 9:49My mind immediately goes to, Oh my God, those are millions of
- 9:52people that I could let down. And that actually has me play a
- 9:58much smaller game in life, which I'm committed to breaking
- 10:01through. I have tons of things in my life
- 10:02that I do, including one big scary thing I do every single
- 10:06day that makes me uncomfortable. It makes my stomach churn.
- 10:10But the reality is, what's the worst that happens?
- 10:13If I ask Tim Ferriss to come on this podcast, the worst he's
- 10:16going to say is either no or completely ignore me.
- 10:19That's the worst. It's like a scary ask, but is it
- 10:22actually have any potential of being harmful?
- 10:26No, it's just I'm taught to play a small game because playing big
- 10:30is scary and exposes me to judgement and rejection and
- 10:33people calling me names and all of those things.
- 10:35At the end of the day, I know I can handle.
- 10:38So it's about being willing to be seen succeeding.
- 10:42It's about willing to play big 'cause I think about my life if
- 10:46I had stayed at Uber, right? I worked at Uber from 2014 until
- 10:512018 till I was 28 years old. Bradley at 40 years old still
- 10:57working at Uber is a soul crushing thought to me if I'm
- 11:01being totally honest. And it's not 'cause Uber is not
- 11:02a great company and changing the world, it absolutely is, But it
- 11:06is not bringing my unique gifts to the world.
- 11:10And it's not to be arrogant. It's to say like me being on an
- 11:13operations team or leading A-Team at Uber is not bringing
- 11:17what I truly have to bring to the entrepreneurial side of
- 11:21businesses, of the world of supporting people and helping
- 11:24people out of their limiting mindset.
- 11:28And this is one of the biggest things that drives me because I
- 11:32got out of the rat race and I'm still absolutely working on
- 11:37building up my company and my movement and making the impact
- 11:40that I know I'm here to make. And part of that is supporting
- 11:44you in your journey. So right now, this whole series
- 11:49is going to be 4 parts, and it's really about the opportunity
- 11:53that's in front of us. I truly believe the world has
- 11:56absolutely changed in all of our favors.
- 11:59I think it's really exciting. It's something to take advantage
- 12:02of. It's something to be to spend
- 12:04the time, energy and money like I paid for a workshop really
- 12:07recently on AI tools on using Clod Co work on using Clod on
- 12:10LLMS. These tools are absolutely innovative and changing world
- 12:17changing tools that enables you and every founder to go change
- 12:23the landscape in what supports other people.
- 12:26And that's going back to those niche solutions are buildable
- 12:30for customers that didn't have solutions before, but are more
- 12:34than happy to pay for that. And really, the only thing
- 12:38standing in your way is yourself.
- 12:41The only thing standing in your way is mindset, in being scared,
- 12:47in the fear. And so now that I've set this
- 12:50whole thing up, episode 2 will be about mindset.
- 12:54We're going to go deep into the things that really hold us back
- 12:58as founders. I will share more about what
- 13:00holds me back as a founder and how I navigate it.
- 13:03But you're not alone If you're scared, if your struggle to hold
- 13:06yourself accountable, if you procrastinate, if you let those
- 13:10challenges that come your way derail you, you're frankly in
- 13:13really, really, really good company.
- 13:14In the first part is really understanding what's true for
- 13:17you, like getting that, that awareness of where you're held
- 13:21back in your business. So episode 2 will be all about
- 13:24mindset. Episode 3 will be a much more
- 13:27practical episode on how to actually go about building these
- 13:31solutions and using the tools that we have at our disposal
- 13:35that the start up landscape has completely changed.
- 13:38You don't need to go raise money now to build an MVP, right?
- 13:41You can build it in a weekend. So just everything is completely
- 13:44changed. How I think you know who's going
- 13:47to build their solutions for themselves and who's not and how
- 13:50that how we can think about what solutions we should be building.
- 13:53And then episode 4 is really the long game and what compounds
- 13:56make it sustainable over time. Again, I want to be honest and I
- 14:01have an educated take, but it's still one man's take.
- 14:03So if you completely disagree with me, great.
- 14:06I'd love to hear your take. But what I'm seeing in the macro
- 14:09environment is that these big companies just don't need all
- 14:11these people, which is going to create a beautiful opportunity
- 14:15for all of these individuals to truly follow their passion and
- 14:18bring their gifts to the world. So my 1:00 ask is if this
- 14:23stirred up some thoughts in you, If this stirred up a limiting
- 14:26belief in you, that you, Oh my God, I have that also, or an
- 14:29excitement in you of I get to go build this or I get to go build
- 14:33a different thing that I'm currently building now or
- 14:35whatever. Any way that this episode lands
- 14:37for you, DM me on LinkedIn. I would truly love to hear from
- 14:41you. Bradley Jacobs on LinkedIn, my
- 14:43Lance, you'll find me in 2 seconds and tell me where you've
- 14:47been playing small or tell me where you've held yourself back
- 14:50in your life from an ownership point.
- 14:52Like you're not a victim. You've held yourself back.
- 14:54I've held myself back. It's OK, right?
- 14:57Acknowledging it is a massive, massive step in the right
- 15:00direction. I can't wait to see those DMS
