Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Like at what point, how many weeks in did you
- 0:02Speaker 1: did you announce? I have no idea, but I was
- 0:05Speaker 1: very pregnant. I had been pregnant and telling everyone.
- 0:08Speaker 2: OK.
- 0:08Speaker 1: But it became a joke during the football season that
- 0:11Speaker 1: Gus and I love him. We're very close. But it
- 0:13Speaker 1: became kind of Gus's announcement. So every game it was.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Like, well, Jenny, be ready. It might be today.
- 0:20Speaker 1: So I had known he was He had wanted to
- 0:23Speaker 1: do this. And it kind of became a funny shtick
- 0:25Speaker 1: where I was like, whenever, if it fits ever, it fits.
- 0:27Speaker 1: But I'm like, please don't announce this pregnancy during Michigan-Ohio State.
- 0:30Speaker 1: And we're like, it's the fourth quarter. We got a
- 0:33Speaker 1: tight game. And by the way, Jenny's having a baby.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And then the Big Ten Championship game was the week after.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And Gus made his big announcement. And I did a
- 0:40Speaker 1: big reveal. There was a camera zoom.
- 0:43Speaker 2: It was a lot. Live on TV. But it was
- 0:45Speaker 2: really sweet. Hey, everyone. Welcome back to Whatever It Takes.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I'm your host, Carly Lloyd, joined by my friend and co-host,
- 1:03Speaker 2: Jenny Taft. Today, we're talking about our pregnancy journeys and
- 1:07Speaker 2: all of the things that come with that. So let's
- 1:10Speaker 2: jump right into it.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Well, Carly Lloyd, the hardest working podcaster around, because right
- 1:16Speaker 1: now we are days away, days away from another baby.
- 1:19Speaker 1: So you got to give me the latest, how you're feeling.
- 1:22Speaker 1: And I know you just wrote a doctor appointment, so...
- 1:24Speaker 1: Still no baby. We're podcasting right now.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Still no baby. Baby is looking great. I finished up
- 1:31Speaker 2: a NST, right? The NST test. Yeah, they monitor. Yep.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Baby was a little frustrating today. You know, they couldn't
- 1:42Speaker 1: get a good read. I forgot about that.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Are you going every week? Every week. Yeah, it's a
- 1:48Speaker 2: bit much. But I understand the fragility of, you know,
- 1:52Speaker 2: women wanting to go and I guess they say when
- 1:55Speaker 2: you're a certain, over a certain age, you know, they
- 1:57Speaker 2: monitor you a little bit more. So baby's feeling very low.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I don't know when this episode is going to go live,
- 2:05Speaker 2: but yes, we are, we are days away. I mean,
- 2:08Speaker 2: the 17th is my due date and I just, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 2: got my hair done today and I want to get
- 2:15Speaker 2: my nails done. I got a few more things to
- 2:18Speaker 2: wrap up. But here we are. I'm doing whatever it
- 2:23Speaker 2: takes to just grind these episodes out. Whatever it takes.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I told Carly, we were texting yesterday.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't need to be like the one
- 2:32Speaker 1: through five person that you're texting, but I'm like, maybe
- 2:35Speaker 1: like in the 20. Like if we're going in, if
- 2:37Speaker 1: we're going to the hospital, I just want to like, hey,
- 2:40Speaker 1: I'm going in.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Like I'm on the list, which is cool. I'm on
- 2:43Speaker 2: the list.
- 2:43Speaker 1: You're in the top five. I I mean, we've got
- 2:49Speaker 1: another guest lined up next week that we potentially have
- 2:52Speaker 1: to record.
- 2:52Speaker 2: TBD. Yeah.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I truly, every time you text me now, though, I
- 2:56Speaker 1: think you're going into labor. So yesterday when you texted
- 2:59Speaker 1: me a voicemail, I'm like, it's happening. We are going
- 3:04Speaker 1: to stop recording for a while now. The odd thing is,
- 3:07Speaker 1: is my water broke with Harper at first. And so
- 3:12Speaker 1: when I went in, I wasn't dilated.
- 3:15Speaker 2: So that kind of set me up for a very
- 3:18Speaker 2: long and lengthy process in labor. But this, you know,
- 3:22Speaker 2: I've heard the second comes a bit quicker and it's
- 3:26Speaker 2: a little bit easier. We'll see. Yeah. But I'm kind
- 3:29Speaker 2: of like, yeah, when is this going to come in
- 3:31Speaker 2: the middle of the night, in the morning? And then
- 3:33Speaker 2: I'm like, I got to hopefully my parents answer their
- 3:35Speaker 2: phone because they're going to be on call with Harper. Yeah.
- 3:38Speaker 2: They're going to be ready. Whatever happens.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Oh, I'm so excited. Well, you can text me at
- 3:43Speaker 1: all hours. I'm available to offer emotional support.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Much appreciated.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And obviously, with this podcast, Whatever It Takes, I think
- 3:53Speaker 1: what something that drew us together to wanting to do
- 3:56Speaker 1: this together was, of course, talking.
- 3:57Speaker 2: About life outside of soccer, outside of our careers.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And having kids and pregnancy was just top of mind
- 4:06Speaker 1: because it has been different for both of us. It
- 4:09Speaker 1: has been challenging at times. It has been rewarding in
- 4:11Speaker 1: every single way. So I think for this podcast, what
- 4:14Speaker 1: would be fun, Carly, is if we just kind of
- 4:15Speaker 1: talk about the stages for us of becoming moms, the
- 4:19Speaker 1: thought of it, the want of it, your decision to
- 4:22Speaker 1: wait till after you were done playing, I think is
- 4:24Speaker 1: really fascinating and being open about it and that we
- 4:27Speaker 1: can get into being pregnant and.
- 4:29Speaker 2: The craziness after. So it just.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Do you remember when you decided, and maybe it changed
- 4:37Speaker 1: while playing, I'm going to wait until I'm done to
- 4:41Speaker 1: make that choice because I'm so impressed by the athletes
- 4:43Speaker 1: that have babies and then come back and play. And
- 4:45Speaker 1: then for me, it felt like there was never a
- 4:47Speaker 1: perfect time, but you just kind of figure it out.
- 4:49Speaker 1: So what was kind of the mindset for you in
- 4:51Speaker 1: that decision?
- 4:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of interesting because... I think when you
- 4:56Speaker 2: go through life, it's those stages of, you know, you
- 5:00Speaker 2: go to school and you go to high school. And,
- 5:02Speaker 2: you know, my case, it was figuring out where I'm
- 5:05Speaker 2: going to go to college and play collegiate soccer and
- 5:07Speaker 2: then have dreams and aspirations of playing on the national team.
- 5:11Speaker 2: And then you think about marriage and then it's like
- 5:14Speaker 2: eventually you think about starting a family. So it wasn't
- 5:18Speaker 2: always top of mind for me, but I always felt like, yeah,
- 5:21Speaker 2: I want to have kids, I think, and, you know,
- 5:24Speaker 2: all of that. But my career was my main focus
- 5:27Speaker 2: for a good portion of my life. And when I
- 5:31Speaker 2: first got on the national team in 2005, Christy Pierce
- 5:34Speaker 2: Rampone was a part of the team. And, you know,
- 5:38Speaker 2: I got to watch her be a mom to her
- 5:42Speaker 2: two girls and Kate Markriff, who also had a son
- 5:48Speaker 2: at the time, I believe.
- 5:49Speaker 1: And, you know, eventually she evolved to having a few
- 5:54Speaker 1: more kids as well. And there were so many other
- 5:56Speaker 1: moms that I played with. And I mean, I just
- 5:59Speaker 1: couldn't imagine.
- 6:00Speaker 2: I saw the challenges of what they went through, the
- 6:03Speaker 2: time change. You know, back then we were flying, you know,
- 6:07Speaker 2: coach to China and there wasn't, well, they had been
- 6:12Speaker 2: just starting to figure out the collective bargaining agreement in 2005. 2006,
- 6:21Speaker 2: was the first time that contractually they had health benefits
- 6:26Speaker 2: for the team, pregnancy leave, and guaranteed contracts. So I
- 6:31Speaker 2: kind of came into all of that because there was
- 6:35Speaker 2: no protection and there was nothing prior to that. And, yeah,
- 6:39Speaker 2: I mean, I... I wanted to be the best soccer
- 6:42Speaker 2: player in the world. That was my ultimate individual goal.
- 6:45Speaker 2: And I set out on that destination not knowing if
- 6:48Speaker 2: I'd ever reach it. I wanted to help my team
- 6:50Speaker 2: win championships. And the thought of starting family was just
- 6:55Speaker 2: always in the back of my mind at the end
- 6:57Speaker 2: of my career when I was completely done. And I
- 7:01Speaker 2: think as women, and that's why I'm kind of excited
- 7:04Speaker 2: to talk about this topic is You know, I just
- 7:07Speaker 2: wasn't educated. I don't know if you were educated of
- 7:10Speaker 2: just our bodies, our clock. We're born with a certain
- 7:14Speaker 2: amount of eggs. And as you get older, those eggs age.
- 7:18Speaker 2: And there's all these things that you're just really naive to.
- 7:22Speaker 2: And I guess I was naive. And once I finished
- 7:25Speaker 2: playing in 2021... I was 39 years old. And I'm like,
- 7:33Speaker 2: you know, my body's never failed me on the soccer fields.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I'm healthy. I'm active. This shouldn't be a problem. And then,
- 7:42Speaker 2: you know, time goes by and months go by and
- 7:45Speaker 2: years go by and, you know, you're not getting any results.
- 7:48Speaker 2: And so I think coming to the realization that I
- 7:53Speaker 2: may need some help may need some science, um, was a,
- 7:58Speaker 2: it was a really tough thing to do because you
- 8:02Speaker 2: just feel like you're failing, you know, yourself, your, your
- 8:05Speaker 2: body's failing you. Um, and I just didn't know. And
- 8:09Speaker 2: so I finally started to, you know, go see some
- 8:14Speaker 2: doctors and figure out what was needed. Um, ended up
- 8:18Speaker 2: going the IVF route, which is such a long, long,
- 8:22Speaker 2: tough journey. Um, You know, one in which, again, had
- 8:27Speaker 2: no idea what to expect. And there's a lot of
- 8:30Speaker 2: women that have gone through it as well. Erin Andrews
- 8:32Speaker 2: has been very open about it. Tara Lipinski. And so,
- 8:37Speaker 2: you know, I took a lot from them and they helped.
- 8:42Speaker 2: You know, I listened to podcasts and listened to other people.
- 8:44Speaker 2: But for me, it was mostly I didn't feel like
- 8:48Speaker 2: I could be the best at both things. if I
- 8:53Speaker 2: had a kid while I was playing. And, you know,
- 8:56Speaker 2: I wanted to be fully present when I wanted to
- 9:00Speaker 2: start a family and I have been. But yeah, it's hard.
- 9:04Speaker 2: I mean, I think every women goes through some sort
- 9:07Speaker 2: of challenge. You have women who want to reach the
- 9:12Speaker 2: top and they're company and maybe put off having kids.
- 9:18Speaker 2: So it's a really tough decision to make, one in
- 9:20Speaker 2: which men don't have to make because they can kind
- 9:22Speaker 2: of just support their wives and go do their thing.
- 9:26Speaker 2: But yeah, that was kind of the biggest reason for
- 9:29Speaker 2: me is I just felt like I couldn't, selfishly, I
- 9:33Speaker 2: couldn't be the best at both. And that's why I
- 9:36Speaker 2: chose that. I mean, I don't know your journey, if
- 9:39Speaker 2: you I mean, especially with what you do in the
- 9:43Speaker 2: broadcasting and sideline reporting. I mean, you've got to be active.
- 9:48Speaker 2: You've got to be running after coaches and players and
- 9:50Speaker 2: getting interviews. And also the thought of, you know, someone
- 9:55Speaker 2: coming in and maybe filling your spot and then you
- 9:58Speaker 2: losing your spot. You know, that was always a worry
- 10:01Speaker 2: for me as well, out of sight, out of mind.
- 10:03Speaker 2: So I, you know, how did you navigate kind of
- 10:05Speaker 2: your initial thoughts on starting a family?
- 10:09Speaker 1: It's, well, one, it's, I so appreciate how open you
- 10:12Speaker 1: are about it because I remember, I still remember you
- 10:14Speaker 1: and I talking about this in New York City, before
- 10:17Speaker 1: Harper and sharing that IVF had been hard and it
- 10:21Speaker 1: hadn't worked yet. And, you know, I have such an
- 10:24Speaker 1: interesting perspective. There's so many areas. And I admit, you
- 10:30Speaker 1: saying just now that you were 39 when it wasn't happening,
- 10:34Speaker 1: I just turned 39. And I actually, it was kind
- 10:38Speaker 1: of an emotional birthday for me because I don't, I
- 10:41Speaker 1: would like to have another kid and I haven't yet.
- 10:43Speaker 1: And it's so nice to hear that even Like, 39
- 10:47Speaker 1: isn't old. But for whatever reason, it hasn't happened for
- 10:50Speaker 1: me the second time.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Gigi's great.
- 10:51Speaker 1: You know, there were so much that went into planning that.
- 10:55Speaker 1: And I almost regret because you think about the planning
- 10:58Speaker 1: and you can't plan it.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Like, no.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I believe God's plan. Like, I'm going to have another kid.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I truly believe that. And I'm, you know, I'm going
- 11:05Speaker 1: to get there. But I did not expect that I
- 11:07Speaker 1: would be a little sad on my birthday. And that
- 11:09Speaker 1: hit me kind of hard this year. And I can't
- 11:12Speaker 1: believe I'm getting emotional.
- 11:13Speaker 2: I'm crying in the closet. Oh, boy.
- 11:17Speaker 1: But hearing you say 39 just out of me, like,
- 11:21Speaker 1: I just needed to hear that because in my head,
- 11:23Speaker 1: I'm like, I thought I'd be pregnant by now again.
- 11:27Speaker 2: And I haven't been.
- 11:29Speaker 1: And that's OK. It's going to happen. So we're making
- 11:32Speaker 1: those plans. And Gigi's an amazing blessing.
- 11:35Speaker 2: And there will be another.
- 11:38Speaker 1: But I think back on, you know, when I was
- 11:42Speaker 1: thinking about having a kid and I actually I'm not
- 11:46Speaker 1: sure if I'd shared this story with you, but I
- 11:49Speaker 1: did have an audition for a different network and I
- 11:53Speaker 1: didn't get it. And I would never have tried to
- 11:58Speaker 1: have a kid then because I was similar to you.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Like if you get pregnant and they have a fill
- 12:03Speaker 1: in for you and then what if you're replaced and
- 12:05Speaker 1: you don't want to give them an idea that someone
- 12:07Speaker 1: else could be better?
- 12:07Speaker 2: I definitely had.
- 12:08Speaker 1: That in my mind, although that's unfair because if you're talented,
- 12:13Speaker 1: you should be talented. And that continues. I didn't get
- 12:16Speaker 1: this job. And I kind of thought I need to
- 12:19Speaker 1: just try because you never know. And I got pregnant immediately.
- 12:22Speaker 1: So that was really cool to think that I didn't
- 12:26Speaker 1: get this job for a reason. And I'm also the timing.
- 12:30Speaker 1: There's never good timing, right?
- 12:31Speaker 2: Like never. I feel like you can't plan for it. No,
- 12:34Speaker 2: you can't. It's like it's going to complicate life.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Like I love how you're like, yeah, I got to
- 12:38Speaker 1: get the crib ready and we got a second and
- 12:40Speaker 1: we'll figure it out.
- 12:41Speaker 2: But I just.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I overthought it for sure in a competitive way because,
- 12:47Speaker 1: like you, I did want to be the best at
- 12:50Speaker 1: what I was doing. And also, I never have been
- 12:52Speaker 1: someone to say no to work, which is a bit
- 12:55Speaker 1: of a fault. It's a positive and a fault. But
- 12:59Speaker 1: you and I really care about what we're doing and
- 13:01Speaker 1: like what we're doing. And I, this sounds so, this
- 13:06Speaker 1: sounds so Well, you tell me the word. But I
- 13:09Speaker 1: was like, I don't want to be on TV and
- 13:11Speaker 1: have a hard time losing the baby weight. Like, it
- 13:13Speaker 1: sounds so crazy. I had that thought.
- 13:18Speaker 2: It's the visual. It's the complex. And then it's even like,
- 13:21Speaker 2: what is the network going to think? You know, are
- 13:23Speaker 2: they going to be, like, happy with how we look
- 13:25Speaker 2: on air? I mean, that's definitely crossed my mind.
- 13:29Speaker 1: No, it is.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Crossed my mind. It is.
- 13:31Speaker 1: And, you know, I think the hard part about the in-between,
- 13:34Speaker 1: since we're thinking about the stages of it, I've had
- 13:37Speaker 1: some miscarriages and I've had to go to work. And
- 13:40Speaker 1: it's like a silent sadness that you're not really talking about.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I have an amazing group of men I work with.
- 13:46Speaker 1: I work with a lot more men than women, a
- 13:48Speaker 1: lot more women now. But some of my closest friends
- 13:51Speaker 1: are men that are producers, directors. And like you don't
- 13:55Speaker 1: I don't tell them everything, but there's like a silent
- 13:57Speaker 1: struggle to that, which so many women go through. So
- 13:59Speaker 1: I think that like. in between when you want to
- 14:02Speaker 1: be pregnant and you're not, or you've had a loss,
- 14:05Speaker 1: that's the hardest part for me. Like getting to be
- 14:07Speaker 1: pregnant and be able to talk about it.
- 14:10Speaker 2: I can't wait.
- 14:11Speaker 1: That's clearly not today, but when that's the case, I
- 14:15Speaker 1: will be telling you. Well, I'm sorry you felt sad
- 14:18Speaker 1: on your birthday. Oh, I truly believe that everything happens
- 14:22Speaker 1: for a reason. I mean, I, what, like three years ago,
- 14:26Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't even know if I'm going to
- 14:28Speaker 1: be able to get pregnant. you know, and to have
- 14:30Speaker 1: that thought was just, it consumed my life daily, you know,
- 14:36Speaker 1: and having Brian there to just say, just trust the process.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Everything's going to work out the way that it's supposed
- 14:42Speaker 1: to work out.
- 14:43Speaker 2: And, you know, here we are with like a baby
- 14:46Speaker 2: just about to be born, our second one. And so
- 14:50Speaker 2: don't lose the faith and hang in there. Yeah, no,
- 14:53Speaker 2: I appreciate you saying that.
- 14:54Speaker 1: I do so remember like the parts where it wasn't
- 14:57Speaker 1: easy for you and now seeing this like amazing family
- 15:00Speaker 1: that you have.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it's all going to work out. And I wasn't like,
- 15:06Speaker 2: I think the journey of going through IVF allowed me
- 15:11Speaker 2: to be more vulnerable. I mean, I, you know, was
- 15:14Speaker 2: a machine and a robot throughout my career and, you know,
- 15:18Speaker 2: acted like I didn't need help or I didn't need,
- 15:20Speaker 2: you know, an arm around me. And, like, I needed
- 15:24Speaker 2: people throughout this journey. I needed Brian. I needed my
- 15:27Speaker 2: family and friends and people that understood. I had a
- 15:32Speaker 2: good friend that used to work within U.S. Soccer, one
- 15:36Speaker 2: of the staff, who just really, really helped me through
- 15:41Speaker 2: the journey. And, yeah, it was kind of— it was different because— Again,
- 15:48Speaker 2: I never really let my guard down throughout my career.
- 15:51Speaker 2: I never really showed any sign of weakness and vulnerability.
- 15:57Speaker 2: And this just totally shed every layer that I ever had.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I mean, when I was going through the retrievals, we
- 16:04Speaker 2: were at the Capitol in D.C. and I was with,
- 16:07Speaker 2: you know, I was with Fox and I was with
- 16:09Speaker 2: Lexi and Rob and, you know, a bunch of other people.
- 16:13Speaker 2: And I get the call that, you know, our embryos
- 16:17Speaker 2: came back abnormal, you know, and I'm having to step
- 16:20Speaker 2: off to the side and take that call and then
- 16:24Speaker 2: wipe my tears away and figure out our plan of
- 16:27Speaker 2: what we're going to do next.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Am I going to go through a retrieval again? And yeah,
- 16:31Speaker 1: so it's just, it's a lonely, dark, dark place. And
- 16:35Speaker 1: then I obviously took a break during the Women's World
- 16:38Speaker 1: Cup in 2023 and Leslie Osborne, Heather O'Reilly and Stu Holden, we.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Would go for runs and yeah, I just kind of
- 16:47Speaker 2: opened up to them and just said, this is what
- 16:50Speaker 2: I've been going through and it's so hard. And it
- 16:53Speaker 2: was good to have people there that, you know, were supportive.
- 16:56Speaker 2: So there's a lot of women in the same boat
- 16:59Speaker 2: and everybody has, you know, really tough journey. So it's
- 17:05Speaker 2: an important topic that I think is definitely great to share, especially,
- 17:14Speaker 2: you know, someone like us that we're both successful. We're
- 17:17Speaker 2: confident women. We're strong. But this can break you as well. Yeah.
- 17:24Speaker 1: And there's no reason why we shouldn't be open about it.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I think there's that misconception. I love hearing that you
- 17:29Speaker 1: opened up to Stu and Leslie and, you know, it's okay.
- 17:34Speaker 1: It's great to talk about it. Why wouldn't we chat
- 17:37Speaker 1: about this, right? Like this is something that so many
- 17:39Speaker 1: people go through and deal with, but I mean, hey,
- 17:43Speaker 1: you're the example, Carly. You're in it.
- 17:45Speaker 2: We're days away. Oh, we're days away. Maybe we take
- 17:50Speaker 2: a little break and kind of come back to just
- 17:54Speaker 2: navigating the life of pregnancy and work, which is crazy
- 17:59Speaker 2: in itself. Welcome back to.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Whatever It Takes with Carly Lloyd and Jenny Taft. Today
- 18:14Speaker 1: is all about babies, pregnancy, the before, the during, the after.
- 18:20Speaker 1: And I guess this is, we could chat for hours
- 18:23Speaker 1: at this point about this. But we discussed kind of
- 18:26Speaker 1: the pre, the getting pregnant, the ups and downs that
- 18:30Speaker 1: come with that. And then how about the being pregnant part?
- 18:33Speaker 1: Because I know for me, when I was finally able
- 18:35Speaker 1: to kind of announce that I was pregnant, and it's
- 18:38Speaker 1: funny that I have Gus Johnson, actually a part of
- 18:42Speaker 1: our college football crew, announced it for me during the
- 18:45Speaker 1: Big Ten Championship game.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Wait, so were you nervous? Like at what point, how
- 18:48Speaker 2: many weeks in did you announce?
- 18:51Speaker 1: I have no idea, but I was very pregnant. I
- 18:53Speaker 1: had been pregnant and telling everyone.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 18:55Speaker 1: But it became a joke during the football season that Gus,
- 18:59Speaker 1: and I love him, we're very close, but it became
- 19:01Speaker 1: kind of Gus's announcement.
- 19:03Speaker 2: So every game, it was like, well, Jenny, be ready.
- 19:06Speaker 2: It might be today.
- 19:07Speaker 1: So I had known he was He had wanted to
- 19:10Speaker 1: do this. And it kind of became a funny shtick
- 19:12Speaker 1: where I was like, whenever, if it fits ever, it fits.
- 19:14Speaker 1: But I'm like, please don't announce this pregnancy during Michigan-Ohio State.
- 19:17Speaker 1: And we're like, it's the fourth quarter. We got a
- 19:20Speaker 1: tight game. And by the way, Jenny's having a baby.
- 19:22Speaker 1: So he didn't do that. So I actually thought the
- 19:26Speaker 1: moment had passed and the Big Ten Championship game, or
- 19:30Speaker 1: we had had Michigan-Ohio State, crazy game. I'd been pregnant
- 19:33Speaker 1: after Michigan won. They stormed the field. Security guards were
- 19:37Speaker 1: protecting me like crazy. And then the Big Ten Championship
- 19:41Speaker 1: game was the week after and Gus made his big
- 19:44Speaker 1: announcement and I did a big reveal.
- 19:46Speaker 2: There was a camera zoom. It was a lot. Live
- 19:49Speaker 2: on TV. But it was really sweet.
- 19:50Speaker 1: And Gus, or Gigi had her, well one, Gigi's, you know,
- 19:54Speaker 1: got a call from Gus Johnson already, which is pretty fun.
- 19:57Speaker 2: That's pretty cool.
- 19:58Speaker 1: And that was cool to just have that video. I'm
- 20:01Speaker 1: going to have to look back and send it to you.
- 20:02Speaker 2: But how about you?
- 20:03Speaker 1: When you finally, Carly, were able to be pregnant and
- 20:06Speaker 1: excited and telling people, what was that like for you?
- 20:09Speaker 2: Well, so the IVF route is like, I just feel
- 20:13Speaker 2: like you're walking a fine line of, you know, it's
- 20:18Speaker 2: like in life, you want to be.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Super positive about things. You know, you want to be
- 20:23Speaker 1: negative Nancy and, you know, you want to think positively.
- 20:28Speaker 1: But with IVF, it's a weird line to walk because
- 20:33Speaker 1: you don't want to get too high, but you don't
- 20:35Speaker 1: want to get too low either.
- 20:37Speaker 2: So We had the embryo transfer. I had an embryo
- 20:40Speaker 2: transfer first. It didn't work. And then after World Cup,
- 20:45Speaker 2: came back, did another retrieval, had another embryo transfer. We
- 20:50Speaker 2: decided to go ahead with it. And then the big
- 20:54Speaker 2: thing is waiting nine days. That's when you can kind
- 20:57Speaker 2: of first get your blood work to see. And so
- 21:00Speaker 2: I was at waste management golf tournament, the PGA golf tournament.
- 21:06Speaker 2: So I was playing in the pro-am. And I could either,
- 21:11Speaker 2: because of our length of stay, I wasn't going to
- 21:14Speaker 2: get back to my doctor's office until, I don't know,
- 21:19Speaker 2: maybe day 11 or so. So they gave me a
- 21:24Speaker 2: script to go to a LabCorp nearby if I wanted to.
- 21:29Speaker 2: And so Brian and I hopped in an Uber and
- 21:31Speaker 2: we went. And I remember asking the lady who was
- 21:34Speaker 2: drawing my blood, you know, how long will it take
- 21:37Speaker 2: to get the results? Because it was on a Friday. Yeah.
- 21:40Speaker 1: And she's like, oh, usually, you know, it's Friday, most
- 21:43Speaker 1: likely Monday. And I'm like, okay, like I'll, I was
- 21:46Speaker 1: going to be home on a Tuesday.
- 21:47Speaker 2: It wasn't that big of a, yeah. It was like
- 21:50Speaker 2: a day difference, but it was just that anticipation. And
- 21:54Speaker 2: so I actually got the results through my portal first
- 22:00Speaker 2: before my doctor's office could call me to tell me
- 22:02Speaker 2: the news. And I had it, send it to my
- 22:05Speaker 2: friend because I'm like, what does this number mean? I
- 22:07Speaker 2: did that too. It was a beta number. And I'm like,
- 22:11Speaker 2: and she's like, Carly, you're pregnant. And I'm like, so
- 22:15Speaker 2: it was, and it was really early in the morning.
- 22:17Speaker 2: We were in Arizona. So the time changed. We, you know,
- 22:20Speaker 2: we're getting up a little bit early and I, I
- 22:22Speaker 2: kind of, you know, tap Brian because he was still sleeping.
- 22:27Speaker 2: And I told him the news and it was like, you, you,
- 22:30Speaker 2: you longed for it. You wanted to be super excited,
- 22:33Speaker 2: but then you're like, okay, we still have a long
- 22:36Speaker 2: ways to go because anything can happen and your numbers
- 22:40Speaker 2: have to, you know, double and every certain days and
- 22:43Speaker 2: you have to keep going back for blood work. So
- 22:46Speaker 2: it was like, we, we got really excited in that
- 22:48Speaker 2: particular moment and, you know, hugged and, and then it
- 22:51Speaker 2: was kind of like, okay, let's just, you know, not
- 22:55Speaker 2: get overly, overly excited. But I did tell my family
- 22:58Speaker 2: and a few close friends and, And then, yeah, you
- 23:03Speaker 2: just kind of, again, going back for blood work. Eventually,
- 23:07Speaker 2: you go and you get to hear the heartbeat for
- 23:12Speaker 2: the first time. Now, this is, we're talking five, six weeks.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:17Speaker 2: Usually, I'm sure you went to your doctors for the
- 23:21Speaker 2: first time.
- 23:21Speaker 1: I think I was around seven, eight weeks. I remember I, like,
- 23:26Speaker 1: lied a bit because I had to be on the
- 23:28Speaker 1: road for college football, or No, it wouldn't have been
- 23:31Speaker 1: college football.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Was it soccer? I don't know. I lied.
- 23:34Speaker 1: I thought I was eight weeks, but I was really
- 23:35Speaker 1: like seven. And they say you can't come in till eight.
- 23:38Speaker 2: But I was like, I need to know if there's
- 23:41Speaker 2: a heartbeat. Yeah. And so I did. I did get in.
- 23:43Speaker 1: And that was I mean, of course, that was an
- 23:45Speaker 1: amazing feeling. And I didn't have not to interrupt you,
- 23:48Speaker 1: but it was such a different experience now having had
- 23:51Speaker 1: a harder time getting pregnant the second time around, because
- 23:53Speaker 1: the first time was so easy. And you're kind of like, okay, like,
- 23:58Speaker 1: who knows?
- 23:58Speaker 2: This is great. And there's just no fear.
- 24:00Speaker 1: So I had just zero thought of any thing negative,
- 24:04Speaker 1: I guess, which is, I think, a good way to be.
- 24:07Speaker 1: But it's like you say, you want to celebrate the positive,
- 24:09Speaker 1: but there's a lot of that unknown in the in-between.
- 24:11Speaker 2: So it's still early. I know. It's hard.
- 24:14Speaker 1: And so many women go through so many different things.
- 24:17Speaker 1: But week by week, I was just kind of taking
- 24:19Speaker 1: it week by week. And at 10 weeks, you know,
- 24:22Speaker 1: and I'm still doing the progesterone shots in my butt
- 24:25Speaker 1: and all these things. So at 10 weeks, I graduated
- 24:28Speaker 1: from my doctor's office, the fertility clinic, and then went
- 24:33Speaker 1: to my OB. And there was still that, you know,
- 24:37Speaker 1: there was still that worry. I wasn't, I wasn't maybe
- 24:43Speaker 1: like some other women that, you know, wanted to go
- 24:45Speaker 1: like every week.
- 24:46Speaker 2: And I think we were going pretty much like once
- 24:50Speaker 2: a month. But it was like every doctor's appointment, you
- 24:54Speaker 2: kind of held your breath and just wanted to make
- 24:57Speaker 2: sure that there was a heartbeat each time you went.
- 25:00Speaker 2: So it's hard. It's like you get super excited that
- 25:03Speaker 2: it worked, but then it's hard to sort of be
- 25:06Speaker 2: excited in the moment. But as time went on, we
- 25:09Speaker 2: obviously started to get more and more excited. And after
- 25:12Speaker 2: the anatomy scan and everything was looking good. And yeah,
- 25:15Speaker 2: I think I I think I announced publicly because I
- 25:19Speaker 2: did my article on, uh, women's health. So for those
- 25:23Speaker 2: that didn't read that article, you can, you know, Google
- 25:26Speaker 2: that article. Um, but I basically wrote about my journey
- 25:30Speaker 2: and I think it was 15 weeks and I was just,
- 25:33Speaker 2: I was like really nervous. I ended up wanting to
- 25:36Speaker 2: get an ultrasound before just to double check and, um,
- 25:41Speaker 2: because it's, yeah, it's, it's just such a, it's such
- 25:44Speaker 2: a nerve wracking thing. But, um, Second time around, it's been,
- 25:48Speaker 2: you know, a bit different, which has been fine. That's good.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Well, and it's vulnerable at the end of the day. Yeah.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Even though it's amazing you shared your story, it still
- 25:56Speaker 1: doesn't mean it's easy to have that conversation. It's still,
- 26:00Speaker 1: you're still telling the world, which is... And I was embarrassed,
- 26:04Speaker 1: you know, like I remember going to the... Yeah, I
- 26:07Speaker 1: remember being in my doctor's office and there were, you know,
- 26:10Speaker 1: there were people that recognized me and I just kind
- 26:12Speaker 1: of would put my head down in the beginning and...
- 26:16Speaker 1: I wasn't very open with telling a lot of people.
- 26:18Speaker 1: I felt like people were probably wondering, you know, why
- 26:22Speaker 1: isn't she pregnant yet? And, you know, all these different things.
- 26:25Speaker 1: And then there was a part of me where I'm like,
- 26:29Speaker 1: I don't, why do I care about this? You know,
- 26:31Speaker 1: I could be helping so many other people talking about this. And, um,
- 26:36Speaker 1: that was, that was one of my top moments. I mean,
- 26:39Speaker 1: of course, playing for the national team and, and giving
- 26:42Speaker 1: birth to Harper.
- 26:43Speaker 2: And all that. But, um, The amount of support that
- 26:50Speaker 2: I received and the amount of people that reached out
- 26:53Speaker 2: after I had gone public with that Women's Health Magazine
- 26:57Speaker 2: article just felt really fulfilling to just really put it
- 27:01Speaker 2: out there and help other women. Because it's, yeah, it's
- 27:05Speaker 2: just a really tough, tough journey.
- 27:10Speaker 1: I can't imagine you ever being embarrassed. I just don't
- 27:13Speaker 1: like that version of you. Because it's real, though. It's
- 27:16Speaker 1: real life. But I just can't see that side of
- 27:19Speaker 1: you in so many ways because you're such a confident person.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Mm hmm. Yeah.
- 27:23Speaker 2: And then, yeah, it was I had to tell obviously
- 27:26Speaker 2: had to tell Fox, like, yeah, I'm going to be on,
- 27:30Speaker 2: you know, and that was another thing. I'm like, I
- 27:32Speaker 2: have to plan these transfers. Yeah. Around soccer. I'm like,
- 27:36Speaker 2: I'm still planning my life around soccer because I want to. So,
- 27:40Speaker 2: you know, I want to work.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I want to work these month long tournaments in the summer.
- 27:46Speaker 1: So that was like a whole nother thing in itself
- 27:49Speaker 1: to plan the timing of all that. And then, yeah,
- 27:52Speaker 1: Fox was, they were thrilled. They were over the moon,
- 27:56Speaker 1: super supportive, whatever you need. And obviously wardrobe staff, as
- 28:01Speaker 1: you know, I was talking to you about what some
- 28:03Speaker 1: of the stuff that you like to wear. Cause I
- 28:05Speaker 1: was like, I don't, I don't know how I'm going
- 28:06Speaker 1: to be. I don't know what's going to be comfortable
- 28:09Speaker 1: on air.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Yeah. So that was, that was that.
- 28:14Speaker 1: But it is weird how, I remember being scared to
- 28:17Speaker 1: tell Fox too, but not for any reason. Like there
- 28:20Speaker 1: was no indication that they wouldn't be supportive of the pregnancy.
- 28:25Speaker 1: And I was working on Undisputed at the time. So
- 28:27Speaker 1: it was me behind a desk with Skip Bayless and
- 28:30Speaker 1: Shannon Sharp. So in a weird way, like being behind
- 28:32Speaker 1: the desk, my belly really didn't show a lot of
- 28:35Speaker 1: the time.
- 28:36Speaker 2: And the hardest part was- Were you doing college football
- 28:37Speaker 2: though too?
- 28:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:39Speaker 2: So you were pregnant during college football and Undisputed. So
- 28:43Speaker 2: it was really busy.
- 28:44Speaker 1: And then I ended up, Leaving Undisputed when I went
- 28:48Speaker 1: on maternity leave, which was like best timing ever for
- 28:52Speaker 1: many reasons. It was time to move on, but it
- 28:54Speaker 1: was just crazy how it timed out perfectly. So college football,
- 28:57Speaker 1: I was pregnant, but in like the comfortable stages.
- 29:00Speaker 2: I was still flying.
- 29:01Speaker 1: But my last event with Undisputed was the Super Bowl.
- 29:06Speaker 1: And I remember and I also did I did some
- 29:09Speaker 1: entertainment reporting and I still do at times and I
- 29:11Speaker 1: worked for Extra and no dog show at this point.
- 29:15Speaker 1: I did the dog show in the summer that year.
- 29:18Speaker 1: So that was my first event back. Gigi was born,
- 29:22Speaker 1: what month was Gigi born?
- 29:24Speaker 2: So March 24th, 22.
- 29:25Speaker 1: So it was the Super Bowl.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Don't ask me who was playing. I should remember.
- 29:31Speaker 1: But it was in LA because I remember walking pregnant
- 29:34Speaker 1: like and thinking oh wow like this is I'm done
- 29:38Speaker 1: I am I feel it now like this is the
- 29:40Speaker 1: end and I I don't know what week I was
- 29:42Speaker 1: it was in the 30 weeks sometime but I was
- 29:45Speaker 1: like I'll be fine I'll just keep on keeping on
- 29:48Speaker 1: and then I had Gigi and had a really natural
- 29:50Speaker 1: time off and then I worked the dog show which
- 29:52Speaker 1: was like in June right after Gigi so I had
- 29:55Speaker 1: like two months off and I remember like you like
- 29:58Speaker 1: we've shared stories about like pumping and I was like
- 30:01Speaker 1: in the security van and I was hiding.
- 30:04Speaker 2: And they were like, don't worry, we won't let anyone
- 30:05Speaker 2: near you. That was hard.
- 30:07Speaker 1: So being pregnant, I think was really fun.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Like, was it hard for you on air or no?
- 30:14Speaker 2: I mean, I guess you were sitting for undisputed. I
- 30:16Speaker 2: have one story that's very, I gotta be honest.
- 30:20Speaker 1: So undisputed was hard because I would wake up at
- 30:22Speaker 1: three or four, but I find that we've discussed this,
- 30:25Speaker 1: that in a weird way, being busy was good. I
- 30:28Speaker 1: couldn't really think about it or stress about it. I
- 30:31Speaker 1: just was going. Like I was just going to continue on.
- 30:33Speaker 1: I was still traveling.
- 30:35Speaker 2: I was busy. I was excited. I was healthy.
- 30:38Speaker 1: You know, I didn't have any morning sickness or anything
- 30:41Speaker 1: that was holding me back. So I just, I was tired,
- 30:44Speaker 1: of course, but maybe I was always tired.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:46Speaker 1: I have one story that I have to admit. And
- 30:50Speaker 1: it was a college football game. And Gus, Joel, and
- 30:54Speaker 1: I have a very organic relationship. conversation while we're on air, right? Like,
- 30:58Speaker 1: we're always talking.
- 30:59Speaker 2: It's very free-flowing.
- 31:00Speaker 1: I'll say to my producer, hey, Chuck, I can add
- 31:03Speaker 1: on so-and-so. And I don't even remember who.
- 31:06Speaker 2: The player was.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Let's just say it was Christian Pulisic, if we're talking
- 31:12Speaker 1: about soccer. Like I said, hey, I've got a story
- 31:14Speaker 1: on Christian. And then, like, minutes went by, and we
- 31:19Speaker 1: had moved on to other things, and Gus throws it
- 31:23Speaker 1: to me. He's like, hey, what do you got on Christian?
- 31:26Speaker 1: And I had absolutely no idea. No idea what my
- 31:30Speaker 1: story was. Forgot what I had pitched. And that has, Carly,
- 31:34Speaker 1: never happened to me. And this is like a big
- 31:36Speaker 1: college football game. I think we were at Oklahoma or
- 31:39Speaker 1: it was about an Oklahoma player. And I've definitely blocked
- 31:42Speaker 1: it out of my brain because it was so traumatizing.
- 31:45Speaker 1: And I just didn't speak. And I, so this is like.
- 31:49Speaker 2: So you did have a thought about it at one point.
- 31:52Speaker 2: At one point.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Earlier in the game that was it was more so
- 31:55Speaker 1: that I was like there's so much going on during
- 31:59Speaker 1: a game where I'm talking to people reading listening so
- 32:03Speaker 1: he threw it to me just in a moment where
- 32:04Speaker 1: I like wasn't ready for it like it came to
- 32:06Speaker 1: me five seconds after he threw it to me or
- 32:09Speaker 1: 10 seconds after but for whatever reason in that moment
- 32:11Speaker 1: I was just like pregnancy brain like it was not
- 32:15Speaker 1: there So I didn't say anything. And then my producer
- 32:20Speaker 1: was like, hey, you good? I'm like, yeah, Mike, like,
- 32:23Speaker 1: wasn't working. Oh, my gosh. I, of course, have told
- 32:27Speaker 1: him since it was not that.
- 32:29Speaker 2: So then.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Trey, who is my audio guy, who is literally an angel,
- 32:33Speaker 1: like he is a foster.
- 32:35Speaker 2: The guy is the best guy in the world. Foster parent.
- 32:37Speaker 2: I love him. We've worked together for years.
- 32:38Speaker 1: I see Trey sprinting from the other sideline because he
- 32:42Speaker 1: thinks he screwed up and my microphone doesn't work.
- 32:45Speaker 2: And he comes over. He's like, what happened? I go, Trey,
- 32:48Speaker 2: I am so sorry. But that one was on me.
- 32:51Speaker 1: And he was like, it's OK.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Don't worry about it. You're pregnant.
- 32:58Speaker 1: And we're in this together. And so then in about,
- 33:00Speaker 1: this all feels like eight years, 30 seconds later, I say, hey, Chuck,
- 33:06Speaker 1: I'm good. I got that story. And so then Gus
- 33:08Speaker 1: threw back to me and he was like, tell us
- 33:10Speaker 1: about that Christian Pulisic guy. And I, of course, had
- 33:13Speaker 1: my story. But it was so bad. It's crazy. Pregnancy
- 33:18Speaker 1: brain is real.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Mom brain, pregnancy brain, post-pregnancy brain. I lost
- 33:25Speaker 2: my train of thought last summer. Just covering the women's euros.
- 33:29Speaker 2: The final Harper had had me up. She was, she
- 33:32Speaker 2: was with me in LA the whole time. She had
- 33:36Speaker 2: me up every three hours for weeks. Oh, and I'm,
- 33:40Speaker 2: you know, nursing and I'm, you know, pumping when I
- 33:44Speaker 2: go to the, to the studio. And, um, yeah, I
- 33:49Speaker 2: remember we were doing a standing segment. Stu was on
- 33:52Speaker 2: and I like turned to Stu and he's giving me
- 33:55Speaker 2: this look and I'm like, I just lost my train
- 33:58Speaker 2: of thought. And I think, you know, Stu and Ari
- 34:00Speaker 2: kind of, I think, I think Ari was, yeah, Ari
- 34:04Speaker 2: was there as well. Just kind of, you know, helped
- 34:07Speaker 2: me through it. But I was like, oh my gosh.
- 34:10Speaker 2: I mean, I knew what I was going to say.
- 34:11Speaker 2: We rehearsed it a bit and boom, gone. Gone.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, it happens. It just doesn't happen a lot.
- 34:20Speaker 1: But it was an odd thing.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Yes. I can't even believe I admitted that. But it was.
- 34:25Speaker 1: But Trey has forgiven me since. And so has my producer,
- 34:28Speaker 1: Chuck McDonald, who after the game, I remember going over
- 34:31Speaker 1: to him and just being like, because, you know, you
- 34:33Speaker 1: talk to your producer and talk back, but a game
- 34:35Speaker 1: is happening and you can't really get into the specifics.
- 34:37Speaker 1: And I was like, Chuck, I don't know. And he
- 34:39Speaker 1: was like, Jenny, you're good. That doesn't happen to you. Like,
- 34:42Speaker 1: we're not holding on to this.
- 34:44Speaker 2: I'm sure nobody even really noticed.
- 34:46Speaker 1: And it was like, oh, audio issue. And then poor Trey.
- 34:50Speaker 1: But Trey, I love him to death.
- 34:52Speaker 2: All right. I got to give him something. On that note,
- 34:54Speaker 2: let's take a quick break.
- 34:55Speaker 1: And we've discussed the pre-pregnancy, the pregnancy, and then the postpartum,
- 35:00Speaker 1: which Carly is about to experience very, very soon again.
- 35:03Speaker 2: We'll be right back. Welcome back to Whatever It Takes.
- 35:18Speaker 2: That last segment, I was getting some cramps going on
- 35:21Speaker 2: down below. I'm like, am I going to go into
- 35:23Speaker 2: labor at this recording of episodes? The show must go on.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Doing whatever it takes. Yeah, whatever it takes. Are you good?
- 35:32Speaker 2: I'm good now. Maybe some Braxton Hicks, you know. They
- 35:36Speaker 2: were pretty strong, though. I think we're talking this into existence, Carly.
- 35:40Speaker 2: I know. I mean, I still need a few more days. Okay.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Okay.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Where are you at? You're 39?
- 35:46Speaker 1: No.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Tomorrow will technically be exactly 39. I thought we were
- 35:51Speaker 2: right around there. Oh my gosh. I'm so excited for you.
- 35:54Speaker 2: I know. So what did you, did you have something
- 35:56Speaker 2: a friend sent you?
- 35:57Speaker 1: This is crazy because someone knows that we're talking about this.
- 36:01Speaker 1: One of my best friends who's pregnant right now and
- 36:03Speaker 1: she and I were texting about IVF and pregnancy. And
- 36:06Speaker 1: so she's, I've been talking to her a lot about
- 36:09Speaker 1: this and she just texted me. Just wanted you to
- 36:12Speaker 1: know this quote that I read today. Research on longevity
- 36:17Speaker 1: is complicating the story. Women who had their last child
- 36:20Speaker 1: after 33 were twice as likely to live to 95,
- 36:23Speaker 1: while women who gave birth after 40 were four times
- 36:26Speaker 1: as likely to reach 100.
- 36:29Speaker 2: So, Carly, I'll see you in the hundreds. That'd be amazing. Although,
- 36:35Speaker 2: you know, hopefully that's not, you know, too horrible of
- 36:39Speaker 2: a 100-year-old. You know, I don't want to be, like,
- 36:41Speaker 2: a vegetable at that point. Yes. Like, still hanging. Hopefully
- 36:47Speaker 2: we're all hanging a little bit.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Hopefully we're in a nursing home together with our kids
- 36:51Speaker 1: visiting all the time. But yeah, so Alex was thinking
- 36:53Speaker 1: about us.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Wow, look at that. I did read that.
- 36:57Speaker 1: I know.
- 36:57Speaker 2: There's always the thought that I did see that. I
- 36:59Speaker 2: feel like I saw that on Instagram. But there's always
- 37:02Speaker 2: the thought of, like, I think there's pros and cons
- 37:04Speaker 2: to having kids when you're older, you know, versus younger
- 37:08Speaker 2: and You could look at it both ways. I mean,
- 37:11Speaker 2: I think you're older, you're wiser, you're more comfortable in
- 37:14Speaker 2: your own skin. But then I'm like, oh my gosh, when,
- 37:18Speaker 2: you know, Harper and this baby, I mean, I'm about
- 37:20Speaker 2: to pop this baby out at 44 years old. And
- 37:23Speaker 2: I'm like, I hope, you know, we got to really
- 37:25Speaker 2: stay active. Like, I hope we're around for grandchildren. You know,
- 37:31Speaker 2: there's whole, that whole element. And yeah, it's gone through my,
- 37:35Speaker 2: it's gone through my mind a bit, but.
- 37:36Speaker 1: I just think that the lifestyle that we live, I mean,
- 37:41Speaker 1: there's so much that you can control and not control.
- 37:43Speaker 1: But I do think we're doing the right things to
- 37:45Speaker 1: be healthy. And that's what you have to control, right?
- 37:49Speaker 1: Control the controllables. I think having kids a little older
- 37:53Speaker 1: is fun that we have the ability to, you know,
- 37:56Speaker 1: show them fun things. I mean, I can't imagine my
- 37:58Speaker 1: life having kids in my 20s, but I have friends
- 38:01Speaker 1: who did and it was the best thing for them.
- 38:03Speaker 1: So it's There's no perfect way. You just have to
- 38:06Speaker 1: follow that gut and instinct. But we're living till 100.
- 38:09Speaker 1: So we are, according to the study. I wonder how
- 38:13Speaker 1: many people they studied there.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm all in. Just the three of us. And
- 38:16Speaker 2: that is the study. And I'll see you there.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Since you're about to hit baby delivery and then postpartum,
- 38:25Speaker 1: that stage for you with Harper, I think something that
- 38:28Speaker 1: you said to me, like you've just embraced every stage
- 38:32Speaker 1: because of maybe the not... it wasn't perfect and easy
- 38:36Speaker 1: from the beginning. And so now you've just, you're like, hey,
- 38:38Speaker 1: I might not be sleeping. I'm just going to embrace it. Like,
- 38:41Speaker 1: how lucky to celebrate every moment. Are you looking forward
- 38:45Speaker 1: to postpartum? And maybe what are the challenges that you
- 38:48Speaker 1: remember or don't remember? And just kind of your approach
- 38:51Speaker 1: this time around?
- 38:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, everybody's journey is different.
- 38:55Speaker 2: And there's women that absolutely hate being pregnant, but love
- 38:58Speaker 2: having kids. And there's women that love being pregnant. And,
- 39:00Speaker 2: you know, there's all these different feelings I think that
- 39:04Speaker 2: every woman goes through. With my particular journey, I think,
- 39:08Speaker 2: like you said, because it was so hard, I really
- 39:11Speaker 2: embraced everything, even my pregnancy. I mean, I did. I
- 39:15Speaker 2: loved being pregnant. I thought it was an absolute miracle
- 39:20Speaker 2: of what our bodies can do and how everything that
- 39:25Speaker 2: is needed is just forming and prepared and when you
- 39:30Speaker 2: deliver the baby, same thing. I mean, your body does
- 39:33Speaker 2: some incredible things. So I just, it's so miraculous to
- 39:37Speaker 2: be able to even be pregnant, get pregnant. So I
- 39:41Speaker 2: really embrace that. And then what's kind of crazy is
- 39:45Speaker 2: I was not present during my career. And I don't
- 39:48Speaker 2: know that... I mean, I was definitely present in the
- 39:53Speaker 2: 2015 World Cup final.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Yes.
- 39:56Speaker 2: That was a very fun game to be a part of.
- 40:00Speaker 2: But being in those zones and those moments throughout my
- 40:04Speaker 2: career was really difficult because you're always trying to prepare
- 40:07Speaker 2: for the next thing and you're always worried about making
- 40:10Speaker 2: rosters and everything's in cycles. Every four years is a
- 40:14Speaker 2: World Cup and Olympics. So it was really hard. And
- 40:17Speaker 2: once I stopped playing and then... had Harper, again, I
- 40:22Speaker 2: think everybody had told me how fast it goes. Everybody
- 40:26Speaker 2: had told me to soak up the moments. And I really,
- 40:32Speaker 2: truly did. I loved every stage. It was, I would
- 40:38Speaker 2: say the one thing that rocked my boat a little
- 40:41Speaker 2: bit is type A. And, you know, I like to
- 40:44Speaker 2: have things tidy and do the dishes before I go
- 40:48Speaker 2: to bed or, you know, kind of you know, have
- 40:50Speaker 2: things like cleaned up and do the wash and all
- 40:54Speaker 2: these different things. And suddenly you have this tiny little
- 40:59Speaker 2: human that you're keeping alive and you're not really sleeping.
- 41:04Speaker 2: And I was nursing and, you know, the cluster feeds
- 41:08Speaker 2: and all these different types of of moments that I had,
- 41:12Speaker 2: it was, it was really difficult for me. I remember
- 41:14Speaker 2: one day I was planted to, I felt like I
- 41:16Speaker 2: was planted to the couch for like 12 hours. And
- 41:19Speaker 2: I said to Brian, I was like, oh my gosh,
- 41:21Speaker 2: like I haven't gone outside, like you're outside. And I'm like,
- 41:26Speaker 2: oh my goodness. And then I just kind of took
- 41:28Speaker 2: myself back a little bit and I'm like, okay, this
- 41:30Speaker 2: is short lived. Just try to embrace it. So that
- 41:34Speaker 2: took getting used to, and it was, it was short lived,
- 41:37Speaker 2: you know, and, Eventually, I could put Harper down in
- 41:40Speaker 2: one of those little bouncers and, you know, take a
- 41:43Speaker 2: shower freely. And I didn't have too many emotions, I
- 41:49Speaker 2: would say. You know, I think I don't know how
- 41:55Speaker 2: you were after with Gigi, but. You know, I wasn't
- 41:59Speaker 2: too sad. I feel like I didn't battle a lot
- 42:02Speaker 2: of those postpartum emotions that some other women battle. And
- 42:08Speaker 2: I produced milk, which made breastfeeding way easier. I nursed
- 42:15Speaker 2: her for a whole year. I can't say that if
- 42:18Speaker 2: I had to go back to a nine to five
- 42:20Speaker 2: job and have the stress of that, of pumping and
- 42:23Speaker 2: doing all that, would my supply have been that good?
- 42:26Speaker 2: I think a lot of women, you know, struggle with that,
- 42:29Speaker 2: the stress of that. So yeah, I don't know. I mean,
- 42:32Speaker 2: obviously I don't, I wasn't, we weren't really nervous parents
- 42:37Speaker 2: either because I think we were a bit older and
- 42:41Speaker 2: it was just kind of trial and error for us.
- 42:43Speaker 1: You know, we, we didn't over-research, we didn't over-analyze. We
- 42:48Speaker 1: kind of went with our intuition about what she was
- 42:52Speaker 1: doing and kind of started to decipher between her cries
- 42:57Speaker 1: and in her crib, whether we go in, whether we
- 42:59Speaker 1: don't go in. And yeah, so I feel like we
- 43:02Speaker 1: approached it pretty well.
- 43:03Speaker 2: And the second time around, I mean, yeah, I mean,
- 43:07Speaker 2: I don't, I don't know what to expect. Obviously we
- 43:09Speaker 2: know kind of what to do now and this baby
- 43:12Speaker 2: could be completely different. Um, but you know, I plan
- 43:15Speaker 2: on kind of doing the same similar things and, um, Yeah,
- 43:20Speaker 2: but I would say I'm probably a bit more emotional
- 43:23Speaker 2: towards the latter end of this pregnancy, which I'm not
- 43:26Speaker 2: sure why. I wonder why. I don't know. Emotional in
- 43:30Speaker 2: what way? Maybe the hormones are extra strong. Yeah, just emotional.
- 43:33Speaker 2: I just feel like, yeah, things get to me. I'm like,
- 43:36Speaker 2: I look at Harper and I'm like, oh, like, we're
- 43:39Speaker 2: not going to be a family of three, four. I mean,
- 43:41Speaker 2: I'm excited, but I'm like, this is, you know, this
- 43:45Speaker 2: is going to change a lot. So, yeah, but... I
- 43:50Speaker 2: would say that, you know, I had 36 hours of
- 43:52Speaker 2: labor last time. It was long. It was long. And eventually,
- 43:58Speaker 2: you know, we got there. But yeah, we'll see what
- 44:01Speaker 2: this time brings. Oh my gosh. I don't know. How
- 44:03Speaker 2: was your whole life? It was a lot.
- 44:08Speaker 1: I mean, I just, in hearing you talk about that,
- 44:11Speaker 1: I do find it crazy that our bodies, I do.
- 44:14Speaker 2: Think in a lot of ways, forget.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Because yes, there's sleepless nights and there's stress from breastfeeding
- 44:20Speaker 1: or not breastfeeding. And you just, I think you forget, like,
- 44:24Speaker 1: I'm going to be living this through you in a week, basically,
- 44:29Speaker 1: and doing it again, right? Like it all comes back
- 44:31Speaker 1: to you. Postpartum for me was, was okay. I mean, I,
- 44:36Speaker 1: I think that emotionally, like there were times where I
- 44:39Speaker 1: was super just like hormonal in a way of just
- 44:42Speaker 1: being tired. I remember yelling, sorry, mom. And my mom,
- 44:47Speaker 1: like in a way that was so horrible, because I'd
- 44:50Speaker 1: asked her to take the dog outside and it was
- 44:54Speaker 1: raining and she like took him out for a longer walk.
- 44:58Speaker 1: And then I had a wet dog and it just
- 45:00Speaker 1: like I was like, I'm done. I like I can't
- 45:02Speaker 1: function right now like this. That wasn't helpful.
- 45:04Speaker 2: Like I was so cruel.
- 45:06Speaker 1: And on that same day, we had to drive to
- 45:08Speaker 1: the pediatrician and it was raining and I live in L.A.,
- 45:12Speaker 1: And I was like, why is it raining today, the
- 45:14Speaker 1: day we have to drive? You know, it was just like,
- 45:17Speaker 1: it hit me. Everything is so heightened.
- 45:19Speaker 2: So heightened.
- 45:21Speaker 1: That I very vividly remember. I would say that that's
- 45:23Speaker 1: how I was for some stretches because.
- 45:26Speaker 2: You're so tired. You're just tired. So, okay, good. So we're,
- 45:30Speaker 2: that's normal. That's all good and normal.
- 45:33Speaker 1: But no, I mean, I did breastfeed for almost six months,
- 45:36Speaker 1: which I'm glad I did. And then I pumped for
- 45:39Speaker 1: a little bit longer. I mean, I take that back.
- 45:41Speaker 1: It was probably like, Four months and then I pumped
- 45:43Speaker 1: and kind of got to six months with her because
- 45:45Speaker 1: I was traveling again. And I have some reporter friends
- 45:49Speaker 1: that I know that were able to pump like mid-game
- 45:52Speaker 1: at halftime. And I just like know myself and I
- 45:55Speaker 1: barely can go to the bathroom in time. So that
- 45:59Speaker 1: didn't feel feasible to me, although incredibly challenging. impressed by
- 46:04Speaker 1: some who do. And maybe the second, if I hope
- 46:07Speaker 1: when I do this again, if I could pull that off,
- 46:10Speaker 1: I could try.
- 46:10Speaker 2: But at least four years.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Ago, it felt very not doable to me to think
- 46:16Speaker 1: of that mid-game. What did you do at night? Did
- 46:19Speaker 1: you mostly do, did you just nurse her?
- 46:23Speaker 2: I nursed her and then I would also pump. So
- 46:25Speaker 2: there was a bottle, like I remember, it's crazy.
- 46:28Speaker 1: Did you have a night nurse or anybody? I had
- 46:30Speaker 1: a night nurse for three weeks. Which was really nice.
- 46:34Speaker 1: And it was short. And it was, I learned a
- 46:38Speaker 1: lot from her. So she lived with you? Well, she
- 46:41Speaker 1: didn't live with us. I guess she just came over
- 46:42Speaker 1: at night.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 46:43Speaker 1: For like maybe four nights a week. It wasn't full time.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Did they just get the baby.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Up, hand them to you?
- 46:49Speaker 1: Yeah, like, it's like I don't remember because I feel
- 46:53Speaker 1: like it was such a whirlwind. She would come over
- 46:55Speaker 1: at like 9 a.m. So I think Gigi was already asleep,
- 47:00Speaker 1: but she would kind of do the first shift with
- 47:02Speaker 1: a bottle and then I would sleep a little longer
- 47:05Speaker 1: and then I would pump. But then Matt would wake
- 47:07Speaker 1: up early when she would leave and I'd sleep a
- 47:09Speaker 1: couple more hours.
- 47:10Speaker 2: I mean, my fear, I guess I did have.
- 47:14Speaker 1: That nighttime fear, which I think a lot of parents
- 47:16Speaker 1: have that like, well, what if like who's watching them?
- 47:19Speaker 1: And so I liked the idea of someone in the room.
- 47:21Speaker 1: But I don't know if I would do that again.
- 47:23Speaker 1: I don't think I think it was more a new mom. Yeah.
- 47:27Speaker 1: I really learned a lot from our night nurse and
- 47:29Speaker 1: I'm still close with her. She's she's living overseas now.
- 47:33Speaker 1: And I remember telling Matt, like, if we have another kid,
- 47:36Speaker 1: we're having her back. It's been five years, but. I
- 47:42Speaker 1: just learned a lot from her, and that was the
- 47:44Speaker 1: comfort of just having someone who'd been in a room
- 47:47Speaker 1: with a million babies and moms was really nice for me.
- 47:50Speaker 1: We didn't have family around, and I really did enjoy that,
- 47:53Speaker 1: but you kind of just find a rhythm eventually.
- 47:56Speaker 2: So I think the harder part was.
- 47:58Speaker 1: I didn't feel like I lost the baby weight quickly,
- 48:01Speaker 1: and it wasn't like, oh, my gosh, I'm going crazy
- 48:03Speaker 1: to lose it.
- 48:04Speaker 2: No, I know. Didn't you go into it thinking, because
- 48:08Speaker 2: I feel like so many women said to me, you know, Yeah,
- 48:12Speaker 2: if you, you know, breastfeed, like, you're going to shed
- 48:15Speaker 2: so much weight. No, not for me. It didn't... I
- 48:19Speaker 2: don't think... I think when I finished completely, that's when
- 48:23Speaker 2: I started to shed. Same with me.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:25Speaker 2: Which was a year.
- 48:25Speaker 1: I did not lose weight while breastfeeding. I felt like
- 48:29Speaker 1: I really had to stop breastfeeding.
- 48:31Speaker 2: But I have.
- 48:32Speaker 1: One of my best friends is at A Million Babies,
- 48:34Speaker 1: and she's basically never stopped breastfeeding.
- 48:36Speaker 2: It's never looked better. So, like... I don't know.
- 48:39Speaker 1: I mean, there's, everyone's different. I didn't love that feeling.
- 48:42Speaker 1: I didn't feel, I loved the benefits of breastfeeding, but
- 48:46Speaker 1: I didn't love the postpartum. I did not feel like
- 48:48Speaker 1: I was losing weight and it didn't really matter. Yes,
- 48:51Speaker 1: there was some insecurity in that, but I'm like, I
- 48:52Speaker 1: just had a baby. It's not like I'm going to
- 48:54Speaker 1: bounce back tomorrow, but I think it takes time. Even just,
- 48:58Speaker 1: you know, your, your, I had a little bit of
- 49:00Speaker 1: that diastasis. So you, you know, your core muscles just
- 49:04Speaker 1: took forever to feel better.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Like that I think is all normal, but I didn't
- 49:08Speaker 1: love that feeling.
- 49:09Speaker 2: No.
- 49:10Speaker 1: And I also didn't, since we're talking all things, I
- 49:12Speaker 1: didn't love how big my boobs got.
- 49:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:16Speaker 1: At all.
- 49:17Speaker 2: I actually didn't mind it.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:21Speaker 2: Like, wait a second. That was fun for me. I
- 49:24Speaker 2: don't know. I just, like, equate it to, like, just,
- 49:28Speaker 2: I don't know, not being thin, you know?
- 49:31Speaker 1: And, like, running. As a runner, you're like, I don't
- 49:34Speaker 1: need this. Like, this needs to go away.
- 49:35Speaker 2: No.
- 49:36Speaker 1: No.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Mine are definitely not as big this time around as
- 49:39Speaker 2: they were last time. And I was a little bit,
- 49:42Speaker 2: I was probably like 12 pounds lighter going into this pregnancy. Interesting.
- 49:47Speaker 2: But again, postpartum, you know, these puppies are going to probably,
- 49:51Speaker 2: you know, fill up with lots of milk. But like,
- 49:55Speaker 2: this is the stuff I'm kind of like, oh my gosh,
- 49:57Speaker 2: I remember being on air. And, you know, Rob, I'm
- 50:03Speaker 2: Ari and I would always be talking about like bra choices.
- 50:06Speaker 2: And if I'm wearing a bra today, if I'm not
- 50:09Speaker 2: wearing a bra and Rob's like, I don't want HR
- 50:12Speaker 2: coming over here. But that was always like the hot topic.
- 50:16Speaker 2: But I mean, my bra size, I was like, this
- 50:19Speaker 2: is insane. Two years ago when I was pregnant, like
- 50:23Speaker 2: that for me was like, I was uncomfortable, especially sitting
- 50:27Speaker 2: at a desk and in the dress and Well, and.
- 50:29Speaker 1: It feels a little vulnerable because that's, when you're at
- 50:32Speaker 1: a desk, it's almost like it hits you right there too.
- 50:34Speaker 2: Like that's all you kind of see of someone. I've
- 50:37Speaker 2: never at all had that. So I was like, oh,
- 50:41Speaker 2: this is kind of fun.
- 50:42Speaker 1: But I'm also not one who would like to, like,
- 50:45Speaker 1: I don't care. That's just not high on my priority list.
- 50:49Speaker 2: But I get it. I mean, it's not that fun.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Like the milk and the leaking and all the things. Oh,
- 50:55Speaker 2: that's another thing. Nobody told me to get the nipple pads.
- 51:00Speaker 2: So I... No one told you?
- 51:02Speaker 1: No.
- 51:03Speaker 2: I woke up and the bed was soaked. Oh, no.
- 51:08Speaker 2: Milk stains everywhere. Brian was like, what just happened? I'm like,
- 51:14Speaker 2: I guess I'm leaking. Yeah, nobody told me. So I've
- 51:18Speaker 2: got boxes of them now left over. So I'll be
- 51:21Speaker 2: all good. But yeah, that was a big... missing piece
- 51:27Speaker 2: that nobody told me about.
- 51:29Speaker 1: So yeah, the postpartum like chats are like, you gotta,
- 51:33Speaker 1: you gotta really be close with someone. I'm going to
- 51:35Speaker 1: remind you all the things you got to remember, but
- 51:38Speaker 1: truly it's like your body went through a lot. I,
- 51:41Speaker 1: I think it's still the, the same thinking of how
- 51:44Speaker 1: incredible what our bodies can do. Like I, it's just
- 51:48Speaker 1: insane and you're able to create this life and, and,
- 51:53Speaker 1: able to go back to how you were feeling like
- 51:56Speaker 1: you'll be back in no time and it's just that
- 51:58Speaker 1: thought is wild yeah.
- 52:00Speaker 2: I know i and i am last time i was
- 52:03Speaker 2: doing the breastfeeding in our bed um which was absolutely
- 52:07Speaker 2: destroying my back and a couple people were like oh
- 52:10Speaker 2: just lay down and do it and i'm like that
- 52:12Speaker 2: never worked for me yeah so i think i'm gonna bring.
- 52:15Speaker 1: The um.
- 52:18Speaker 2: You know, the recliner that we have in the nursery
- 52:21Speaker 2: in our room so I can at least get in
- 52:23Speaker 2: that because it just, pillows, there was not enough pillows
- 52:27Speaker 2: for support, slunched over, hunched over. Yeah. So that's something
- 52:33Speaker 2: that I'm going to change. So true. Like the recliner,
- 52:35Speaker 2: I remember thinking, these chairs are so expensive.
- 52:40Speaker 1: What is the point? And I did not get a
- 52:42Speaker 1: good chair and that was a big miss. So you,
- 52:45Speaker 1: when you're done with that chair, you send it my way.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:48Speaker 1: Well, now, and I don't want to buy another chair
- 52:50Speaker 1: for Harper's room. So I'm like, well, she has nothing
- 52:53Speaker 1: in there. So if we want to read a book or,
- 52:56Speaker 1: but I was like, I don't want to buy another one.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Why do I need another one? So that's the dilemma.
- 53:01Speaker 2: But yeah, postpartum is, you know, it's very interesting. I mean,
- 53:05Speaker 2: obviously C-sections and, you know, The way that the delivery
- 53:11Speaker 2: goes dictates a lot of different things. It's not all glamorous, but,
- 53:17Speaker 2: you know, it's part of the experience. Part of it. Well, look,
- 53:22Speaker 2: I'm so excited for you. We've rocked it so far
- 53:24Speaker 2: on TV. We're in it. On TV. Whatever it takes. Yeah.
- 53:30Speaker 2: Whatever it takes. Oh, my gosh.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Carly, I'm so excited for you. And I honestly, I
- 53:35Speaker 1: really appreciated this conversation. I feel like the timing could
- 53:37Speaker 1: not have been better for both of us. you know,
- 53:39Speaker 1: it was really nice. So hopefully fun for others to
- 53:43Speaker 1: hear our stories.
