- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts. Right now.
- 0:15Welcome back to the Three O Take presented by C Kick.
- 0:17This is episode 416. I'll be your host, Kyle Cord,
- 0:21and I'm here with my Co host, Nate Reyes.
- 0:26Nate. What's up, everybody?
- 0:29Welcome back. We are live, and we are here to
- 0:33talk NFL free agency. Oh, wait.
- 0:38How much better it is than, oh wait, baseball's free agency?
- 0:42Dude. Is that is that what we're
- 0:44talking about? Because it is.
- 0:46Just 24 hours of chaos. So jealous.
- 0:52I saw a lot of feedback today from baseball fans saying, you
- 0:55know, the NFL free agency window is great and all that, but I
- 1:00like having a taste here and there.
- 1:02A little hint throughout the. Office we need to I don't care
- 1:05about that. Something in between 24 hours of
- 1:08chaos is isn't bad. I would like a week of chaos.
- 1:12Nope. Nope, I'm going.
- 1:14Just give me all the chaos in a day.
- 1:16Just give me, give me something. Make it a little later in the
- 1:19winter so it's not just right off the top, but just give me
- 1:24give me a day to look. Forward to maybe like 3 days
- 1:27before Christmas. There you go, early Christmas.
- 1:31Roll right into Christmas. Early Christmas and then that
- 1:34way everybody's set. You know where everybody's going
- 1:36to be. Sure, you don't have as much to
- 1:38talk about the offseason, but this is ridiculous, man.
- 1:43Like it. Additionally, it was a joke when
- 1:44we're talking about Jordan Montgomery, Blake Snell, so on
- 1:49and so forth. It is Monday, March 11th and the
- 1:56Korea Series starts in 10 days. Sure 9.
- 2:03Nine days, 10 days. Somewhere in there.
- 2:06What are we doing? Dude, I don't know.
- 2:09All we get is cryptic Instagram Story messages.
- 2:12That's it. It's all we can work off of.
- 2:17And look, I hate to admit it, this is exactly what Scott
- 2:23Borris wanted. What we're seeing, I know we're
- 2:27we're sitting here bashing the free agency or or lack the lack
- 2:32thereof in terms of moves, but we're seeing what happened with
- 2:37Garrett Cole today. A little bit of a scare there.
- 2:39There's been some other injuries that have taken place across
- 2:43baseball. We were calling him an idiot.
- 2:46We said we What are you doing, Scott?
- 2:47You're washed. You're at the end of the road,
- 2:50buddy. Not to say he knew this was
- 2:54going to happen, but. It always happens.
- 2:56That he knew this was going to happen.
- 2:58It always happens. There's always stuff that
- 3:00happens. There's always something.
- 3:03That's what spring training is. It's over hype, and it's
- 3:09figuring out who got in their offseason workout and who
- 3:12didn't. Sad day.
- 3:17Yeah. We just need somebody to like
- 3:19something like at this point, go to the Angels, I don't care.
- 3:23Doesn't seem like many people want you to go to the Angels.
- 3:26But on that note, we're getting way ahead of ourselves here.
- 3:29I I we still got to take care of a couple housekeeping items, but
- 3:33real quick on Blake Snell to the Angels, there's a lot of people
- 3:35saying, well, who would want to go play for the Angels?
- 3:40Do we want to see Mike Trout in the postseason or not?
- 3:45I've I've given, I've given up on those streams.
- 3:48Do we want to see Mike Trout of the postseason or not?
- 3:54I've shipped those out of Long, long buried that in the
- 4:00backyard. I'm going to pretend that you
- 4:03just said yes. We want to see Mike Trout in the
- 4:05postseason, so how are we going to get on the Angels for trying
- 4:09to surround him with decent players?
- 4:12Like what? I get it.
- 4:14I get it. It's.
- 4:15They're more than a cycle. For years, no, I I know I.
- 4:19But you have to start somewhere. And I know we just rag on the
- 4:22angels left and right, and deservedly so.
- 4:24They they get in their own way more times than not.
- 4:26But at some point, you got to start somewhere and for us to be
- 4:30ragging on a Blake Snell to the Angels that to me, that's more
- 4:33on Blake Snell than it is the Angels.
- 4:34If you, if you're the Angels and you're trying to go after
- 4:36somebody, OK, that's fine, whatever.
- 4:40But Blake Snell maybe have a little bit more awareness.
- 4:43It sounds like you don't want to play in the Bronx, but I mean,
- 4:49do you want to, do you want to compete right away?
- 4:51If so, maybe the Bronx has a better option than LA.
- 4:56As much as I would imagine he'd like to be out West, that's just
- 5:00my take on it. But before we get any deeper
- 5:02into personnel news, updates, yada yada yada, the fantasy
- 5:09league is now official. Just want to shout out the
- 5:12official 2024 league. We are underway.
- 5:16The group chat has been started, so thank you to everyone who
- 5:20applied this year. If you didn't make it, try again
- 5:22next year. We'll be as I said.
- 5:24We're Year 4, isn't it? No, we're like, it's got to be 5
- 5:29or 6. Honestly, there's can I can I be
- 5:32honest here? I don't know if I even remember
- 5:34like the first or second. Year.
- 5:36I don't know if I do either. I thought it was after 2020, but
- 5:39I don't know. Yeah, it's it.
- 5:42I think 5I, I want to say maybe five.
- 5:45I think it's more than four, but probably not by much.
- 5:47But anyway, it's underway that we got the draft coming up this
- 5:52weekend, so looking forward to that.
- 5:53But again, thank you to everyone who applied, appreciate your all
- 5:56his interests and of course always appreciate your support.
- 5:59Circle back next. Year.
- 6:01Circle back next year, but don't don't go anywhere.
- 6:04Stick around with us this year. Stay up to date with with the
- 6:08pod, the YouTube, all that stuff.
- 6:10Speaking of which, subscribe to the YouTube little plug there.
- 6:12A little reminder trying to get to 2K by the end of the year.
- 6:15So help us out on that front. We got the hot takes and
- 6:19predictions episode coming up soon.
- 6:23Next episode, I think. Unless there's some, like, weird
- 6:27emergency breaking news episode, I think it's slated for next
- 6:32week. Yep, because as I mentioned the
- 6:36Korea Series starts gets this baseball season Baseball season
- 6:39underway officially next, as I said Wednesday, Thursday.
- 6:44So we're going to we're going to get the hot takes and
- 6:46predictions episode out a little early.
- 6:48Let it breathe. Let y'all check that out on the
- 6:51pod and or YouTube. So if you've ever We're going
- 6:54deep on that one for sure. Oh yeah, just be prepared.
- 6:58So if you've ever wondered if there's a time that you should
- 7:01check out the YouTube, that would be the time.
- 7:05With that said, let us continue our conversation here with
- 7:10Garrett Cole. A little bit of a scare Today it
- 7:16was announced by Aaron Boone that that he was scheduled for
- 7:20an MRI and all of Yankees Twitter just proceeded to melt.
- 7:30We're a very volatile fan base. If you couldn't tell.
- 7:34I mean talk. I'll let you run with this,
- 7:37'cause this is your guy. But the only thing I'll say
- 7:40here, right off the top, is talk about a fan base that was at the
- 7:45top of the mountain yesterday. And then today, I kid you not, I
- 7:50saw, I saw tweets from people saying does anyone, anybody want
- 7:55to meet at the top of the Brooklyn Bridge?
- 7:59Yeah. In within 24 hours, if that.
- 8:04That's how we do it. Yeah, that's what we're dealing
- 8:06with here. So we're going from we're I I
- 8:09have people, I have Yank. I've seen Yankee fans talking
- 8:12about world beaters going to run away with the World Series.
- 8:17There's always, they're always those, yeah.
- 8:19Sharpie. And then today you get the news
- 8:22that Garrett Cole possibly could maybe miss a year and then some.
- 8:28And now it's while the season's over.
- 8:30I I don't know how you get to from there to there with one
- 8:35guy. I understand he's your Cy Young
- 8:37winner, but he wasn't going to win you the World Series single
- 8:41handedly. I'll just say that.
- 8:43Your thoughts? Here's the problem.
- 8:45There's a lot of problems, actually.
- 8:47But here's one of the problems is that we're just we're we're
- 8:51just so used to being lied to as a fan base.
- 8:55The Yankees organization just lies.
- 8:59They just flat out lie. So we're having to pick up the
- 9:03pieces and, you know, create our own scenario in our head.
- 9:10Aaron Boone saying, you know, he's saying stuff.
- 9:14He said for years, for years, that it's just precautionary,
- 9:18that it's not that big of a deal.
- 9:20I mean we said that about Aaron Judge last year and then he's
- 9:23out for two months, said that about Rizzo being fine.
- 9:27Obviously issues there. It's like it's just it's it's
- 9:31always been there. We're always being lied to
- 9:34constantly. So we're having to pick up the
- 9:36pieces. You want the hopeful side first.
- 9:42You want like the hopeful, somewhat positive Nate.
- 9:48I want you want him first. Passionate Yankee fan Nate.
- 9:50Give it whatever. Whatever comes to you first.
- 9:53I'm going to be positive 1st. I'm going to get this out of the
- 9:55way so I can I can get in deep to all the other stuff my
- 9:58irrational, you know, fears. Basically positive.
- 10:06Love him or hate him, Garrett Cole is a perfectionist and he's
- 10:11very focused on how he feels and how he recovers.
- 10:16And to the point of like, nausea almost.
- 10:20Because it's like he's so precise on everything all the
- 10:26time. Every part of his pitching game
- 10:30has to be focused. So this is apparently based on
- 10:38slow recovery. There's no lack of velocity,
- 10:43There's no lack of control. There's no pain.
- 10:49But there is this. I'm not recovering as quickly as
- 10:52I should, so that's where we're getting this precautionary
- 10:56stuff. So I'm hoping this is just
- 10:59gotten blown out of proportion and it's him wanting to figure
- 11:03it out. Irrational.
- 11:05Nate engaged. This doesn't change how I feel.
- 11:13This rotation still needed help. Carlos Rodin is.
- 11:18I don't know what that is. I don't.
- 11:20I don't know if someone like copied and pasted and and
- 11:24brought this new mustache list Carlos Rodin out who throws like
- 11:297 miles an hour lower than what he normally throws.
- 11:34I don't know what that is. Nestor Cortez.
- 11:39I'm getting a lot of like Jeremy Lynn Vibes.
- 11:41You were very nice flash in the pan success, a fun creative you
- 11:49know fan favorite type picture. But I'm starting to get a
- 11:53little, I don't know what you are because you're not overly
- 11:56healthy and now that you are healthy, I'm going to read into
- 12:00your numbers kind of getting kind of getting beat up in
- 12:03spring training and there's certain things you can take away
- 12:07from spring training. I can't.
- 12:08I'm. I'm not going to sit here and
- 12:09say that all spring training things are a Washington and just
- 12:12put it under the umbrella of its exhibition.
- 12:15It doesn't matter. There are certain names for
- 12:18every team. Every fan base has names that
- 12:21they're going to watch closely to see.
- 12:24Are you looking better than the last time I saw you with the
- 12:29idea that, OK, it's spring training, it's a little bit of a
- 12:32slow ramp up period, but I'm worried this rotation has me
- 12:37worried. The lack of depth was already
- 12:39there without Cole. They already needed to add to
- 12:43this rotation before Cole, so this news does not help.
- 12:48So for any Yankees fans that felt like we were on the top of
- 12:51the mountain. We were riding into the sunset
- 12:53with Cole. I strongly disagree.
- 12:57Strongly disagree. This rotation has holes and a
- 13:01lot of question marks. So yeah, I'm nervous.
- 13:06Obviously former, you know, Cy Young winner.
- 13:09It's like, I think that I saw something.
- 13:12Since 2017 he's made 30 plus starts every year.
- 13:17The guy is literally a horse. Last 6/6 full seasons, 30 plus.
- 13:23That's a horse. That's what you want.
- 13:25That's why he got paid what he what he did.
- 13:28So missing that absolutely hurts.
- 13:34But I'm not going to sit here and say that this, this team was
- 13:39already primed to be in the best possible position.
- 13:43No, no way. No.
- 13:46On to the Snell Monty stuff. They're at the luxury tax.
- 13:53They're at the limit. So basically whatever they sign
- 13:56from here, free agency wise, they're playing they're they're
- 14:00going to be paying 110% of their of their contract in taxes.
- 14:07So you're having to pay double and then some.
- 14:12It's not going to happen. I don't know if limit is the
- 14:16best word there. I think recommendation is
- 14:20probably a better word if you're especially if you're the Yankees
- 14:24setting yourself up. I mean pre cold news and again
- 14:27we don't know that this is anything earth shattering for.
- 14:32We still don't. Know or his future.
- 14:34It's not official. Don't know it.
- 14:35It's never necessarily a good sign that a guy's getting an
- 14:38MRI, but with that said, pretend like that news didn't happen and
- 14:45you're you're heading into the season as is.
- 14:47Maybe you add you add a Blake Snell or even a Jordan
- 14:51Montgomery, even though that's not likely.
- 14:53Let's just let's just say hypothetically you add Blake
- 14:55Snell, you have to go for it. You have to go for it this year
- 15:00and if that requires you go shooting past the the the tax
- 15:05threshold, you gotta do it. You you have to do it.
- 15:09You you were becoming the punchline of a joke that has
- 15:14lasted since 2009. It's. 15 years.
- 15:18That's what we're talking about here.
- 15:19And I know, I know, I'm wanting to talk.
- 15:21I get it. The Red Sox guy making comment
- 15:24about how long it's been since world.
- 15:25I get that. But as a Yankees, you have to
- 15:30want more. You have to expect more and if
- 15:33you're this is this has to be you could correct me if I'm
- 15:36wrong. Again pre Garrett cold news
- 15:39today this has to have been one of the best positions they've
- 15:43been in a long time. Yeah even even with the question
- 15:47marks surrounding the rotation. If those question marks don't
- 15:51pan out the way that you would hope they wouldn't you you might
- 15:54actually have 1/2 decent rotation by the All Star break
- 15:58and then you plug in the holes. I I don't know if worrying about
- 16:03the the luxury tax at this point in time it is or should be of of
- 16:07great. Concern for them.
- 16:08It's understandable. Like snow.
- 16:10I I what I put in my notes, I feel like Dylan sees might be
- 16:19back on the table if this is long term.
- 16:24And when I say long term, I'm saying months, if months of
- 16:30Garrett Cole are missed because let's be honest, if you're
- 16:33getting an MRI right now, I'm going to go ahead and say best
- 16:38case scenario, you're going to be shut down for two weeks.
- 16:42And then there's another ramp up period and possibly a rehab
- 16:45starter too. I think best case scenario,
- 16:49we're not seeing Garrett Cole again until May, early May.
- 16:56And that's best case scenario. Worst case scenario, like you
- 16:58were saying, maybe months, maybe the year, maybe into next year.
- 17:02I don't know. Dylan sees I.
- 17:05To me, I I feel like the the price tag was high.
- 17:09Obviously that's why a lot of teams backed out.
- 17:13I'm trying to see a a world where maybe some of these names
- 17:20in Yankee prospect land have impressed.
- 17:24Spencer Jones looks pretty ready, pretty legit.
- 17:31Outside of that, I'm kind of, I don't know, like Jason Dominguez
- 17:34isn't going anywhere. I think the fact that he's
- 17:37cracked in and had immediate success and kind of already had
- 17:41the fan base behind him a little bit, I, I and we've waited years
- 17:45for him. I don't think that's going
- 17:47anywhere. But the only world I see is, is
- 17:54I mean I think Monty won seven years.
- 17:57I think that's the report we keep seeing.
- 18:00I think I could see like a Matt Chapman esque contract for Blake
- 18:04Snell with opt outs and and things like that.
- 18:08But either way you're going over the the tax threshold.
- 18:11So the only thing I see is maybe trading for somebody who is a
- 18:15front of the rotation guy and you're giving up a ton of names
- 18:19and you're getting that guy and cash back to free you up a
- 18:23little bit. So that's why to me, Dylan sees
- 18:26seems like a better option than Snell or Monty.
- 18:33But I don't know, I really don't know because what does that
- 18:36entail? Like is, is Glaber Torres back
- 18:40back on the block? Because I mean, he's set to be a
- 18:43free agent after this year. Like you, you got to have big
- 18:46league names pretty much ready to go and ready to go in that in
- 18:50that deal. So I don't know it changes a
- 18:53lot. For me it changes a lot.
- 18:58George Lombard junior young shortstop, probably not this
- 19:03year. I would say he's more like a
- 19:0420252026 ready guy And then Chase Hampton is a is a another
- 19:10arm who's pretty close. I don't know, man, but the Soto
- 19:15deal was amazing and I think you got to do it even though it just
- 19:22absolutely wiped out the depth. But to sit here and say we're
- 19:30just going to punt, somewhat, punt for a year and hope that
- 19:37Soto just falls in love with New York and is willing to sign an
- 19:41extension here without a deep run into the postseason, that's
- 19:49not enough. That's not going to be enough.
- 19:54He needs more. He deserves more.
- 19:58So. And Judge ain't getting younger.
- 20:02Rizzo ain't getting younger. You know what I mean?
- 20:04Like they got to go. Yeah, that's a good point about
- 20:07the postseason. That taste of the postseason is
- 20:10vital for keeping. Got to have that keeping him
- 20:12long term. Especially in that environment,
- 20:15you know what I mean? I've been to postseason games in
- 20:16Yankee Stadium. It's different.
- 20:18It's different. He's got to feel that.
- 20:21He's got to fall in love with that.
- 20:23Not just the city, not just regular season.
- 20:26Not just that because there is going to be frustration, there
- 20:29is going to be failure and this fan base holds back on no one
- 20:33when there's failure. So if he trips at any point
- 20:38during the season and it's a bad year, I don't see him coming
- 20:42back. I don't see him wanting to to
- 20:44sign here in free agency. We mentioned you mentioned the
- 20:50name I want to touch on real quick because this was also a
- 20:53concern for Yankee Land on Twitter today, Aaron Judge.
- 21:02Another lie. What are we doing, dude?
- 21:06Didn't lie to again, are we, though?
- 21:09Are we are we sure Aaron Judge just isn't as soft as Charmin
- 21:13because this was the same guy that had to miss time due to
- 21:16travel related soreness, whatever that means.
- 21:19The the team I looked I, I, I I took some time today to dig
- 21:24around into the Yankees flight accommodations.
- 21:27They fly on a on a Delta Boeing 757, and granted, I did find out
- 21:33today that they apparently have to pay for their own Wi-Fi,
- 21:38which is kind of wild. Come on, Delta, Oakland.
- 21:42Days of Moneyball. Of the Moneyball.
- 21:44Days we had to pay for it on soda.
- 21:46But but they fly on a 757. How?
- 21:50How are you gonna tell me? And that if I recall the the the
- 21:54flight that he took that warranted the travel related
- 21:58soreness, comments and missing time.
- 22:02It was a rather short flight, so are we sure, Aaron judges.
- 22:09I'm not spring training this. We can't just wrap this around
- 22:16Aaron Judge every team like we know, we know this Billy Upler
- 22:22just got suspended for manipulating the IL that every
- 22:27team does this. And when you have eyes on a
- 22:30superstar, you have to build some type of some type of
- 22:36evidence if you will, manufacturer evidence for a
- 22:40possible IL stint. That's what it feels like every
- 22:43time one of these guys does something.
- 22:45Because if it is like play induced, we're going to sit
- 22:49there and watch replays of how he ran the bases, how he crashed
- 22:53in the wall, how he swung like where did that injury happen,
- 22:56how did it happen? Why didn't he let up if it was
- 22:59right there? So we just chalk it up under
- 23:02random stuff, Random made-up things that I've never heard of.
- 23:06What is Mids? What?
- 23:08What is Midspring beat up? That's that.
- 23:11What is that? I did see a video circulating
- 23:15that didn't look great. It looked like he maybe had
- 23:20tweaked something, didn't didn't like the follow through or
- 23:25something, so I don't that may be it.
- 23:27I don't know. I don't know.
- 23:29But he doesn't. The guy is beat up.
- 23:32It's you're in Florida, where it's like 70° every day this
- 23:37time of year. Yeah.
- 23:40And you, you get maybe two of bats and then you hit the
- 23:44showers. What are we talking about?
- 23:46I don't know. I genuinely don't know.
- 23:48That's what I'm saying. In the in the, in the tow thing
- 23:51we were told wasn't an issue last year and then all of a
- 23:55sudden it required surgery and he's out a few months.
- 23:58It's we just we get lied to and I think every organization does
- 24:02this but like the Yankees are just it's it's miserable at this
- 24:07point. We're miserable.
- 24:10You this this is all you do smoke and mirrors.
- 24:18So I don't know. I don't know.
- 24:21But to those Yankee fans that were saying we were going to
- 24:25walk away with the trophy, I mean it.
- 24:28It could happen. Don't get me wrong.
- 24:29I'm optimistic about this team. I feel good about where they're
- 24:32at when healthy. But I've said that for I don't
- 24:40know how many consecutive years with the when healthy tagline
- 24:46attached to everything just doesn't happen.
- 24:50So is what it is dude. But add to this rotation I will
- 24:56say my last thoughts. Clayton Beater and Luis Heel
- 25:01both look excellent. Luis Heel coming off of TJ
- 25:06pumping ched today. So that does make me feel better
- 25:11about young depth. But again, like so many question
- 25:17marks on the pitching staff right now, that I don't feel
- 25:19confident at all. Yeah, that rotation is some
- 25:24cheeks, Brian Baio signs an speaking.
- 25:29Of rotations that are Cheeks. Come on, that's that was a
- 25:32layup. Boston Red Sox.
- 25:34It's a layup. The Overlook.
- 25:36Baio signs a six year, $55 million contract extension.
- 25:43How much six Year 65. 55 Yeah. So Cheeks, man, this rotation is
- 25:52some garbage we got before this extension.
- 25:54I'd put out AI, put out a post. It said it was something along
- 25:58the lines of like we've got 3 mid to late rotation arms or mid
- 26:05to back end rotation arms and two relievers in Garrett
- 26:09Whitlock and Tanner Hauck. Yeah.
- 26:15But even with my negativity surrounding this rotation, I
- 26:21have to say this, this was a bright spot for me.
- 26:24I I was excited and I know I haven't been the biggest Brian
- 26:27I've. In fact I've been pretty far
- 26:30from being the big, the biggest Brian Baio guy.
- 26:32Like I just I haven't quite seen what the hype is about.
- 26:39I think. I think a lot of the hype is
- 26:41rooted in projections. But with that said, the one
- 26:48thing that I'm still holding out for is having faith in what
- 26:54Pedro Martinez said about this guy.
- 26:56And he's been quoted multiple times in in a variety of
- 26:59different ways, essentially with the same message, saying that
- 27:03when he sees this kid, he sees himself.
- 27:06So I'm going, if Pedro is working with these guys,
- 27:11specifically with Brian Baio, and he says that I'm going to
- 27:18withhold judgment for a little while longer to see if this guy
- 27:21really, if this kid can really blossom into something special.
- 27:24Because we're not just talking about some off the street
- 27:30pitching coach here. We're talking about Pedro
- 27:31Martinez, one of the greatest pitchers of all time who again
- 27:35works with these guys. He's not just he's not just up
- 27:38in the studio observing from a distance he's down in the he's
- 27:42down. It's spring training with these
- 27:44guys. He's working with these guys off
- 27:45to the side one on ones type stuff like that.
- 27:48So if he's if again if he's saying this about him I'm not
- 27:51going to I'm not going to jump to any conclusions just yet.
- 27:53But I will say I'm excited to see what this what this or how
- 27:59this pans out for him and the team because it's a very team
- 28:03friendly deal and if he if he ends up being anything again
- 28:06like what Pedro's saying, this is going to be a steal.
- 28:11You're getting him. If I recall you're getting him
- 28:14through the rest of his ARB years and you're getting him for
- 28:20one. You're buying out the first year
- 28:22free agency and I believe is there an option.
- 28:25I think there's an option for the for 7th year I'd have to go
- 28:29back and double check but at you know, I don't know, I don't know
- 28:34what this year holds for him. I mean sure we can sit and and
- 28:37and look ahead to the next 5-6 years.
- 28:40But going back to our original point about this rotation just
- 28:43being Cheeks, I just saw the the update today.
- 28:47Lucas. Lucas Giolito is officially
- 28:49undergoing surgery and as I mentioned you're working with
- 28:53the, you're working with a a few relievers in the mix here to be
- 28:57party rotation. So that's not a great place to
- 28:59be. Last year I pulled some numbers.
- 29:03Brian Baio went 12 and 11 with a 424 and had 132 strikeouts to 45
- 29:09walks and 157 innings. His fit was actually worse.
- 29:15He had a 454 fit last year. So it's not exactly like he was
- 29:19unlucky. He just he had a had a bump
- 29:22year. He had he had his moments
- 29:24certainly throughout the year he had he had a couple runs couple
- 29:28glimpses of dominance but I don't know man I I to to put a
- 29:34bow on it. I I think I have finally reached
- 29:38a point where I've decided on my outlook for this year.
- 29:43I'm gonna stay positive because I'm tired of just, I'm tired of
- 29:52being negative about this team. And it's not that I all of a
- 29:55sudden think they're gonna do something special.
- 29:57But at this point I'm like, OK, let's let's see if we can pull
- 30:01something out of the hat. And a realization that I came to
- 30:05the other day is like, I don't have to.
- 30:08I don't have to just continually beat down this team as as my my,
- 30:16I don't know, rebellion against John Henry.
- 30:24I can still. I can still TuneIn.
- 30:27I can still watch it. And that goes with any.
- 30:28Team. Who's at a point with with
- 30:30ownership where they're just so fed up with their team's owners?
- 30:33Like, yeah, I know it's possible.
- 30:35I just haven't done it up to this point, but I've I I've
- 30:39gotten to a point now where I have to, I have to have
- 30:42something to look forward to because it's it's been, yeah,
- 30:45the last, the last. Couple of years and that's I
- 30:47mean you you have to there. I think there's a balance
- 30:50between like being realistic of where the, where this the the
- 30:55team is, you know what I mean like where are they at at this
- 30:57moment and also being somewhat critical like you you can you
- 31:02can be critical, you can be realistic but you can also be
- 31:05supportive. So I don't see an issue with
- 31:09what you're doing. I'm the same way I'm you've seen
- 31:15all of our fan base last 24 hours.
- 31:17So that's just how we operate as far as Baio goes financially
- 31:22speaking. I mean, look like upside is
- 31:28maybe A1, downside is a four or five for that dollar amount, Who
- 31:38cares? You know what I'm saying?
- 31:39Like that's that's an absolutely perfect deal.
- 31:43If he blows up, you're you're getting what I would assume his
- 31:47prime. He's 24 right now.
- 31:50So like you're probably going to get his prime at some point
- 31:53during this contract and you're going to really see what he's
- 31:56made of. For those unfamiliar with his
- 31:59game, I know you talked on some of his numbers from last year.
- 32:03Big ground ball guy 92. Ground ball percentage, 92%.
- 32:10That's nuts. Crazy sinker, change up.
- 32:15Fastball, Slider. I think a sinker is probably his
- 32:20number one pitch rank. Is change up I I believe but.
- 32:25The well, usage wise, usage wise, Sinker is the number one
- 32:32ranked 26 in in run value on a sinker last year.
- 32:37So I fully, I don't really like fully understand that stat yet.
- 32:40So please hold on me on that one.
- 32:42I'm going to figure that out, whatever that means.
- 32:47Just to give you an idea, Chris Bassett was at the top of the
- 32:50list with sinker. But either way I mean this the
- 32:55guy, the guy's just crazy with ground ball.
- 32:59So and that's what you need in Fenway, you know you need that
- 33:04kind of guy. So I I.
- 33:08He's. Probably just not a big
- 33:11strikeout guy, you know what I mean?
- 33:13He's probably not going to be like the typical ace that you
- 33:16look at. If you see upside, see, like a
- 33:20Logan Webb, you know what I mean?
- 33:23Like a Logan Webb borderline ace.
- 33:26Really, really decent numbers. Huge ground ball guy and not
- 33:33doing it, your typical, you know, Cy Young way, probably
- 33:41going to have a lot of hits that that creep through, probably
- 33:44going to have some runs scored against them.
- 33:45So to sit here and say he's going to have a dominant ERA,
- 33:48probably not Sit here and say he's going to be, you know, a
- 33:52top five ace in the league. I'm going to probably say no on
- 33:55that too, unless he develops something else.
- 33:59But to have a four pitch guy, to have a guy that is young and
- 34:05seems to be enough to to ride in on some innings, I don't hate
- 34:13the deal. I really don't like financially.
- 34:16It makes a lot of sense. I'm just trying to figure out
- 34:20like how many guys Pedro is going to endorse because I feel
- 34:23like we're we're getting real deep on that list.
- 34:25I feel like any young Dominican but.
- 34:28In house. So in House I I I think Pedro I
- 34:33don't he wouldn't know me from Adam but I I would venture to
- 34:37say that he he recognizes that his endorsement in house carries
- 34:42a little bit more weight. So I I think an endorsement of a
- 34:45Brian Baio is going to like I said he he knows that's going to
- 34:49carry a little bit more weight than him signing off on some guy
- 34:52on Atbs broadcast in the postseason.
- 34:55Like I I I think we're looking at two different things here.
- 34:58So I again I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna ride this out I'm
- 35:01gonna I'm gonna take him at his at his word because he's
- 35:04obviously seeing something and like I said it's not this hasn't
- 35:08been a one time thing. He's continually like zeroed in
- 35:11on this guy and said I see myself in him and I don't think
- 35:15that's something that he just throws around loosely Again,
- 35:18yeah, in House especially so. Also, real quick, fixing my
- 35:22notes here, 'cause I was a little scattered, put in my
- 35:25notes ranks in the 92nd percentile for ground law
- 35:28percentage. My apologies there.
- 35:32Yeah, I I don't know, man. I I think it's.
- 35:34I think it's a solid deal. I don't think it's anything,
- 35:37it's not a splash, it's not something.
- 35:39But like like you said, you got to have something you can feel
- 35:41excited about and like worst case scenario, this guy's going
- 35:45to be solid in your rotation for the next 5-6 years and maybe
- 35:52upside ceiling. He's a, he's a, he's #1I don't
- 35:59hate it. We shall see.
- 36:02Joey Votto agreed to a minor league deal with the Toronto
- 36:07Blue Jays. Going back home.
- 36:11I think if there was one team that he was going to end his or
- 36:16follow up rather his Cincy tenure with, I think this one
- 36:19makes the most sense. I think it's the only one that
- 36:22makes sense if we're being honest.
- 36:24Especially when you consider where he's at in his career what
- 36:28you're most likely going to get from him.
- 36:30I don't think venture to say probably safe to say you're not
- 36:35going to get a 40 Homer season out of Joey Votto at 40 plus.
- 36:40So if anything it's a nice it's a nice little reunion with with
- 36:47old Canada. The fans seem to be on board
- 36:52with it and even if the even if the honeymoon phase fiddles out,
- 36:56it's still, it's still going to lend itself the the acquisition
- 37:00is going to lend itself to some pretty cool moments throughout
- 37:04the year. And if this is it for him, if
- 37:07this is just a one year thing because he did say he, he was
- 37:11quoted as saying I don't want to let go and I still feel like I
- 37:14have ability. The last couple years I was not
- 37:16as healthy as I would as I would have liked to have been.
- 37:21I think we can look at this and say Blue Jays probably getting a
- 37:25year out of Joey Votto and then he's stepping away.
- 37:27So with that said, I think if we get to the end and it's just
- 37:34been a pretty down year for Joey Votto, at the very least he'll
- 37:39be able to walk off into the Canadian sunset with a very
- 37:46noteworthy career under his belt.
- 37:52This was a non roster signing, yeah.
- 37:56So he's not on the 40 man, correct?
- 37:58NRI yeah, but he based on what he was saying he because he was
- 38:02pretty active on social after the after the deal he he used
- 38:07the words working back to Major League games or or something of
- 38:11that variation. So how much of this is a is a
- 38:15two week tryout? That's what I want to know.
- 38:21I mean it's. I look, I'm with him, rooting
- 38:29for him just as much. I would like to see some
- 38:32success. I'm with him.
- 38:35I I think you have to look at his health and I I know it got
- 38:39real ugly there in the at the end and since he, I understand.
- 38:42But you have to think that Joey Votto makes the 40 man.
- 38:47No, I mean, what are we talking about?
- 38:51I've looked at their roster. Really just depends on who's got
- 38:54options and and where. I mean Daniel.
- 38:57Vogelbach's in the mix, so. That's what I That's kind of
- 39:00where my head went and he's kind of raking right now in spring
- 39:03training. So it's like if he's trying to
- 39:05break camp with the team and and the DH spot is so interesting.
- 39:14It's so interesting because like Justin Turner the only time he's
- 39:20playing in the field is going to be at first base and that means
- 39:24Vlad is DH ING. So like are you going to carry 2
- 39:30lefty? I hate to say it, pretty
- 39:34unathletic. DH is that are deep into their
- 39:40career between Vogelbach and Joey Votto.
- 39:43I think it's a competition between those two.
- 39:47But Vogelbach is a guy like when he was in New York, Mets fans
- 39:51were trying to run that dude out of town.
- 39:53Like, the lineup would drop each night and you'd see.
- 39:56Or each afternoon and you'd see Vogelbach in the lineup and Mets
- 40:01fans. And the replies were I
- 40:04understand. I hear you.
- 40:04They're miserable. Rational people, I get that.
- 40:06But like, let's not pretend. Yeah, he's having a he's having
- 40:10a decent start to the spring. But let's not pretend like
- 40:13Daniel Vogelbach is going to maintain any level of
- 40:16consistency in 2024. So at the end of the day, it's
- 40:19really, you could think of it as a coin flip and it's, it's a
- 40:22matter of would you rather have a guy like Joey Votto?
- 40:25Yeah. Who has a vet who has a veteran
- 40:28presence? Who I think I'm again I'm with
- 40:32him. I think he's got a little bit
- 40:33left in the tank so I'm not going to sit I I don't want to
- 40:36make it sound like I'm just chalking this up to some
- 40:38farewell tour. For a guy who's been around as
- 40:41long as he has. I I genuinely think he's got he
- 40:44can provide a little bit of output for that line up and for
- 40:49that team over the course of 162.
- 40:53But if if if we're talking about two sides of the same coin here,
- 40:57I'm going Joey Votto I'm sorry like.
- 41:01Oh yeah, with Daniel Mogelbach. I agree.
- 41:04So I agree that. I'm just saying decision.
- 41:06To be made. I'm just saying there's a lot of
- 41:07question marks around the corner infield in DH roles for the Blue
- 41:12Jays. And does this move the needle
- 41:14for you at all for the overall Toronto Blue Jays 2024
- 41:19performance? No.
- 41:22It's a fun story. That's about it, right?
- 41:25Yeah, it's. I think you work.
- 41:26Yeah, OK. I just wanted to get it down to
- 41:30what it is. I apologize if I made it sound
- 41:33like this was pushing them over the edge to like at the division
- 41:35crown. That's not what I'm saying.
- 41:38I'm simply saying if this is if this is what you're taking into
- 41:44the season, some decisions are going to have to be made a la
- 41:48Daniel Vogelbach, Joey Vato, throw in Justin Turner into the
- 41:52mix because he's not getting any younger either.
- 41:54There's a lot of a lot of pieces of play, a lot of guys that are
- 41:57gonna need some days off, whether literally on the bench
- 42:00or slide into the DH slot for a little bit, You know, Vlad
- 42:04Vladi's not old by any stretch, but he's gonna need his time off
- 42:08too. I I What had happened to the
- 42:11Blue Jays? What has happened?
- 42:15Where did where did they go wrong?
- 42:18There's so many I'm like, is Kevin Biggio starting segue?
- 42:24Is Espinal playing mostly 1/3 is.
- 42:27How often is IKF getting into the line up?
- 42:30Justin Turner's never going to play third again.
- 42:33So are we just going to play first?
- 42:36I've heard reports of like because JD Davis just got
- 42:38released and Blue Jays still need a true third baseman.
- 42:41Like there's so many question marks around this team, I I
- 42:48think they're going to hit their staff is good.
- 42:53Don't get me wrong. I I'm very envious of their
- 42:56staff. I think we can speak for both
- 42:58fan bases here between the Red Sox and Yanks to say I would
- 43:01happily take their pitching staff.
- 43:04Absolutely. I'm just not quite sure of like
- 43:09what it looks like moving forward.
- 43:11What's the direction? And this is awfully Yankee like,
- 43:19if you don't mind me saying, this is awfully forced puzzle
- 43:25pieces into the wrong spots for being honest.
- 43:32But I love Joey Votto. I love the character of Joey
- 43:39Votto. It is absolute perfection that
- 43:43he's going back home north of the border.
- 43:47I think there's going to be Canadian baseball fans, whether
- 43:51you're Blue Jay fans or not, showing up to games to show that
- 43:54guy some love. I just I I sense that this will
- 44:00not have the best ending. I was just about to say how, how
- 44:06quickly, as I mentioned, does the honeymoon phase run out.
- 44:09Yeah. And like, oh Canada, this is
- 44:12great. Bring Canada's boy back home.
- 44:16And then June rolls around and we're calling for his head.
- 44:19Yeah, he's hitting out. He's hitting because 20.
- 44:22He's taking up a roster spot. We've seen this before.
- 44:25It happens to everybody. And if it's if it can happen to
- 44:28anybody, it can happen to Joey Votto.
- 44:33I'm just saying I think there was a much better role if he
- 44:38retired and joined the Three O Take Podcast and Fantasy League.
- 44:41I just thought it was a better fit, personally.
- 44:46It it the the the pathway was there it I mean.
- 44:50It was a little more clear, that's.
- 44:51We laid the foundation for him, we tagged him in the post.
- 44:55We sent the message, it was there, but he he said, you know
- 44:59what, you know what I'm going to choose to believe he he somehow
- 45:05saw the message and then he's mentally, he didn't respond
- 45:09back, but mentally he said I'm gonna put a pin in that.
- 45:15I'm gonna go out. And I'd I'd like to think that.
- 45:18And leave everything out on the field.
- 45:20Knowing I have this, yeah. Yeah, in 2025 that.
- 45:24'D be a good get. That would be a good get.
- 45:29That's what I'm gonna choose to believe.
- 45:31I'm also gonna choose to believe that Mookie Betts by the end of
- 45:36the year, will have played every position on the diamond.
- 45:39Because Dave Roberts clearly doesn't care.
- 45:43Dave Roberts cares more about sliding Gavin Lux over, because
- 45:48apparently he's just that bad at short than he does.
- 45:55The health, the stability of his, of his MVP.
- 46:01In. How about the?
- 46:03How about the? Oxymoron of quotes.
- 46:05Permanent for now. What does that mean?
- 46:08That That's not a thing. That's literally not permanent.
- 46:14That's not a thing do. We know what permanent means.
- 46:18Apparently not, because that was a that was a Dave thing, right?
- 46:21That was a Dave thing. That was a Dave quote.
- 46:23Come on, Dave. What is that dude permanent for
- 46:29now? OK, so he's going to he's going
- 46:32to be there at short and then what does.
- 46:36The jokes aside I'm genuinely curious what the condition is
- 46:40that qualify or that that lends itself to the for now like what
- 46:45what has to happen for this to not be a thing because on paper
- 46:50you look at it knowing what we know now about Gavin Lux and his
- 46:53little mini tryout here at Short not being able to get I I was
- 46:57looking into it a little bit more.
- 46:58Apparently he's just not able to make the he's not able to get
- 47:01the throws across the diamond the same way Mookie can, who
- 47:04again was an infielder coming up in the system in Boston.
- 47:09He's played, he played in the infield, he played in the
- 47:11infield a fair amount last year and is sprinkled in throughout.
- 47:18What has to happen for this to not be a thing because as I was
- 47:22saying on paper it it I'm OK with it.
- 47:25I don't like that you you slid him into second full time and
- 47:28then immediately shifting gears. I don't.
- 47:30Like I don't like any of this personally.
- 47:33I mean, I that's what I'm saying though I'm OK with him at short
- 47:36like if this is if this is the decision, that's fine.
- 47:40Second base to short. He I'm fully confident that he
- 47:43can handle. He can handle both.
- 47:46Maybe. Let's not move him over to
- 47:47third. Maybe Let's just keep.
- 47:49Him. Yeah.
- 47:49Let's just relax, yeah? This this side here, but I just,
- 47:55I'm curious to know what he meant by that when he said for
- 47:58now, like what has to happen for him to maybe move back to second
- 48:02or God forbid back to the outfield.
- 48:06I think First off, I feel bad for Gavin locks, yeah.
- 48:11And for those who, you know, didn't remember, he tours ACL
- 48:15last year. And I think that's the issue of
- 48:19what's going on right now, 'cause I did a little deep dive
- 48:22in the in the Baseball Savant and going back to 2020 2 Gavin
- 48:32Lung, Gavin Lux ranked in the 8th percentile for arm strength.
- 48:408th arm strength has always been an issue for this kid.
- 48:44So when you mix in a knee injury and what kind of seems to me
- 48:49like slow, still rehabby footwork and probably not a
- 48:57whole lot of drive off the legs because like as in you and I
- 49:03both played the infield and anybody that played understands
- 49:06that like your legs and your feet and your momentum for that
- 49:09throw do most of the work. It's less about the arm.
- 49:14You either have arm strength or you don't, especially at this
- 49:18age. You either have it or you don't.
- 49:20You're not going to, I mean you're not 15 and we're not
- 49:22going to go tell you to do more long toss.
- 49:24You know what I mean? Like it's it just is what it is,
- 49:27but the footwork and the legs have to be there.
- 49:29So post ACL injury, like it just doesn't look good.
- 49:33It didn't even look good at second base, still doesn't look
- 49:36good. It's very choppy.
- 49:38It's very like there's just there's no fluid movement going
- 49:41on. And for those curious, Mookie,
- 49:51obviously being you know a right fielder, most of his career's
- 49:54pretty high in the in the arm strength category so that's
- 49:56fine. But they're both like opposite.
- 50:00So like Gavin Lux, no arm strength, plenty of range.
- 50:04Mookie, plenty of arm strength, average range, somewhat below
- 50:10average. I looked up last year you said
- 50:15spent some time, let's get nerdy for a SEC.
- 50:17Spent some time at second base, 98 innings, -2 outs, above
- 50:23average at that position. Did have three errors.
- 50:28But like overall, like that's that's not bad.
- 50:32I just, he's only had 116 games in the infield in his career and
- 50:39I don't think people understand that.
- 50:41Like, I get it. It's Mookie and we've seen him
- 50:44do whatever he wants to do on pretty much all sports
- 50:48platforms. The guy's a freak.
- 50:53But making the transition to short is not easy.
- 50:56Shortstop is not easy on a daily grind basis.
- 51:03I don't know, man. This definitely wasn't Plan A,
- 51:07but it's hard for me to think that Gavin Lux coming off of an
- 51:10ACL injury was Plan A, you know what I mean?
- 51:16Like that was really your thought process coming into this
- 51:19year. Was that that guy was going to
- 51:21be your shortstop moving forward with the sprinkle of Miguel
- 51:27Rojas and Chris Taylor? Well, I mean, the vision for him
- 51:32had been short for a while and I would imagine it was probably
- 51:35tough for the for the Dodgers to let go of that vision finally.
- 51:38But it sounds like they all sat down.
- 51:41I read that Mookie, Gavin, Dave Roberts and maybe even somebody,
- 51:46some some front office folks sat down.
- 51:49They talked about it and you know, Mookie gave classic Mookie
- 51:54response. He's like, it's cool, man.
- 51:55He's like I'll. I'll.
- 51:57Literally do whatever. Just want to help the team win
- 51:59and I and to a degree I believe that.
- 52:02I know, I know I get on Mookie sometimes about saying things
- 52:07just to say them but generally speaking I I I think he clearly
- 52:12he's he's OK with the move. Otherwise I think we would have
- 52:16heard about a little bit more of a a disagreement but I I think
- 52:20to him second base to short, yeah, it's going to be a little
- 52:23bit more of an adjustment. But like I said he he's not new
- 52:26to the infield. I I I think he'll be OK.
- 52:32It may not be that it. May not be the prettiest, but to
- 52:36your point, it venture to say having Mookie at short is going
- 52:41to be a little bit better of a plan A or just status quo than
- 52:46having Gavin Lux coming off an ACL as your shortstop.
- 52:50I wonder if this brings in, and I think the permanent, going
- 52:54back to your question, permanent for now probably takes me the
- 52:58idea of like how it looks for the first half of the season up
- 53:02until the trade deadline. And then you probably bank on
- 53:07the Brewers not being in great shape and go get Willy Adamus.
- 53:13And I would go ahead and assume Gavin Lux would be in that deal
- 53:18plus some money plus some prospects.
- 53:21Mookie slides back to 2nd. It's just it's weird for me to
- 53:26say we're the LA Dodgers, we're going to go make a run out of
- 53:31trophy and we're going to say that's pretty good for a right
- 53:39fielder, for our everyday shortstop.
- 53:42I don't feel comfortable saying that.
- 53:45That's Fairpoint. We're the we're the Los Angeles
- 53:48Dodgers. We're going to spend over a
- 53:49billion dollars this offseason, but we're going to settle with
- 53:53Mookie Betts as our shortstop. Yeah, and don't get me wrong,
- 53:57I'm a Mookie fan. I love Mookie.
- 54:00I think he'll be great. I think he will be a Hall of
- 54:03Famer, and I think this speaks to just almost like a a pioneer
- 54:13of flexibility when it comes to being a defender.
- 54:23But it was enough of a stretch for me to say I'm a little
- 54:26nervous about him playing second base every day.
- 54:29Now I'm playing short every day. It's just it's a different,
- 54:32different beast, dude. Honestly, I I It may have been a
- 54:37stretch for you, but I I really liked the idea of him being an
- 54:42everyday second baseman. And, and and to put all this on
- 54:47a bow, this is to make sure that Jason Hayward plays right field
- 54:50every day. OK, sure.
- 55:03Look, this team is not, this team's going to bang.
- 55:05This team's going to freaking rake and they're going to pitch
- 55:08lights out. I think they will be top three
- 55:12in pitching across. Baseball defense is going to be
- 55:17one of their their Achilles heels, but I think they're going
- 55:21to be able to pitch and hit their way out of that.
- 55:24So this is going to be slightly swept under the rug.
- 55:29I'm just saying not the great option that you would be hoping
- 55:35for. I don't know.
- 55:36I just hope that poor defense does not take its toll over the
- 55:42course of the season on a rotation on AI won't say
- 55:46rotation, a mix, a mix of starters that are either dealing
- 55:51with something coming back from something presumably going to be
- 55:55dealt something throughout the over the course of the year.
- 55:58I just hope that that doesn't take its toll on a situation
- 56:01that's already like, yeah, I know they've got their guys,
- 56:03they've got Glass now, Yamamoto, so on and so forth, but.
- 56:08No Bueller. No Kershaw to start the year.
- 56:11So they're. Not going to be bulletproof in
- 56:13the rotation they'll they'll have a better rotation than
- 56:15most, but. The other question mark is Gavin
- 56:20Lux is not good against lefties. Do you do you platoon him?
- 56:29Who do you platoon him with? Do you platoon him with Chris
- 56:34Taylor playing second? You keep Mookie at short.
- 56:39Do you bring in Miguel Rojas to platoon with Lux and move Mookie
- 56:44back to second base during those days?
- 56:48It's cool that they have options.
- 56:50It's definitely cool. They have options and we've seen
- 56:54Muncie play second base too. So like, they can probably mess
- 56:57around and do some things. It's, I mean first World
- 57:03problems. Honestly, when you come to think
- 57:06about it, it is pretty much first world problems.
- 57:09Yeah, do we want to do? We want to have.
- 57:10Muki I wish I had shorts. Do we?
- 57:14Do we want to have an A gold Glover MVP caliber guy play
- 57:20short? Or do we want to stick him out
- 57:22and write where he's been for a while and and just let him focus
- 57:25on hitting, putting up 30 plus bombs every year?
- 57:29But yeah, it must be. Must be tough if you're the
- 57:31Dodgers, must be tough of your Trevor Bauer trying to make a
- 57:37comeback. We've already touched on this a
- 57:39little bit over the course of the offseason, but the recent
- 57:44development with his situation is that he made an appearance
- 57:47for the Asian Breeze Can. Someone fill me in on what that
- 57:52is. Yes, I have it right here.
- 57:54It's an independent travel team that helps players get
- 57:57recognized by scouts by having them play against minor league
- 58:01players from Major League Baseball.
- 58:03So it's specific to that, correct?
- 58:06That makes sense because he carved, didn't he?
- 58:10Ironically, against the Dodgers, yeah, he went three shut,
- 58:18striking out four. Think He loaded the bases early
- 58:21but got out of it so. In the upper 90s too.
- 58:26Think he topped out at 99 is what I read.
- 58:31Yeah. But it's against.
- 58:32Like I said it's against minor leaguers.
- 58:34Not to not to not to take anything away from him.
- 58:36I it was his in the in the articles I was reading they they
- 58:42made sure to mention that this was his first game, if you will,
- 58:47on American soil since since ultimately getting blackballed
- 58:54from the league a while back, but.
- 58:56Dang my tin. I don't know, man.
- 58:59I look, I won't reveal names. We had a group chat going a
- 59:05couple months ago saying that this this girl that exploited
- 59:11and did and like went to trial with him and all the stuff was
- 59:14like a Manfred plant because of how he was attacking Rob Manfred
- 59:19and attacking his, you know, commissioning.
- 59:23Is that proper language? Probably not.
- 59:26Let's go with it. I don't like him.
- 59:32I'm not a fan of his. He annoys me.
- 59:36You can apply that to Trevor Bauer and Rob Manfred, but I
- 59:38think we're. Talking about them, Trevor
- 59:40Bauer, But you're telling me there isn't a rotation that
- 59:47could use this right now. You're like, come on, there's
- 59:55something, there's, there's this.
- 59:58I think that's why he's so vocal.
- 1:00:01I think that's why he's like, so in your face, social, media
- 1:00:04wise, because it's like he's forcing their hand.
- 1:00:08He's going everywhere and showing everyone that I still
- 1:00:12got it. And the fact that I'm not
- 1:00:14getting calls is a bigger issue and has more to do with this
- 1:00:20dictator sitting in the Commissioner suit.
- 1:00:30I'll I'll buy that conspiracy. It's a lot of backlash, man.
- 1:00:34I'm telling you like say, which I we've we've talked about it
- 1:00:37and it's been addressed by by many outlets, many talking
- 1:00:41heads. We're not sharing anything you
- 1:00:43don't already know. We know how it how it panned out
- 1:00:47in the judicial system. Yep, like.
- 1:00:51We understand that, but it's clear that teams don't really
- 1:00:57care. Yep.
- 1:00:59Because if you think about it and I'm.
- 1:01:03I just can't talk it up to only public relations being the
- 1:01:06issue. I think you can.
- 1:01:08I can't. I don't think you.
- 1:01:10Can be the only one, because winning cures all.
- 1:01:13Winning will cure all. Yeah, but you have to get
- 1:01:17through the noise 1st to get to a point you're where you're
- 1:01:20winning. And I don't know if teams look
- 1:01:23at this and go we can weather the storm long enough because I
- 1:01:27that's going to be a heck of a storm.
- 1:01:29And I think to be fair to these front offices and these owners
- 1:01:34or whoever's making the final shot, the final call on to on
- 1:01:38whether or not to sign this guy. Credit to them, they're probably
- 1:01:43having discussions behind behind closed doors going, everyone in
- 1:01:48this room knows what happened legally in terms of the outcome
- 1:01:53and the result and all that judicially.
- 1:01:56But there are a lot of dumb baseball fans out there who
- 1:01:59maybe lack a lot of awareness, or at least enough awareness to
- 1:02:05maybe do a little bit of their own research and find out how it
- 1:02:08actually happened. What like how it panned out and
- 1:02:12instead are just going to fall back on the.
- 1:02:15Well, this guy's a rapist and he's gross and he's sick and I
- 1:02:17don't want him anywhere near my my favorite teams clubhouse.
- 1:02:23There's a lot. Again, say I'm not, I'm not.
- 1:02:26I'm not generalizing. I'm not.
- 1:02:28I'm not sweeping all of these baseball fans under the same rug
- 1:02:31here. But I think we've all, we've all
- 1:02:35had those water cooler conversations at work.
- 1:02:37We've all been in those group texts where people throw out
- 1:02:40some asinine takes on stuff like this.
- 1:02:44Where you go, it's very clear that you have no clue as to what
- 1:02:50actually happened. And whether or not this guy is,
- 1:02:53is, is technically guilty of of what he's being accused of.
- 1:02:57They just look at it and go, this guy is gross, he's a
- 1:03:00rapist. I want nothing to do with him,
- 1:03:02and that's that. And these, these owners, these
- 1:03:04owners in front offices have to take that into account and go
- 1:03:09again. We know what happened.
- 1:03:10But these fans don't are are choosing not to believe
- 1:03:14anything. Or they're they're not even
- 1:03:16aware of the outcome. I know we have to work through
- 1:03:19that, but there's so many, so many occurrences of PR issue
- 1:03:26players getting a second chance. Like Daryl Strawberry, Dwight
- 1:03:33Gooden having cocaine issues, right?
- 1:03:37You have this long list of steroid users that got hounded
- 1:03:42and and yeah, like. But in that, in that in those
- 1:03:45scenarios, drugs were rampant. Like steroids were rampant in
- 1:03:50this day and age and. So domestic, domestic violence
- 1:03:54stuff with history of a lot of players.
- 1:03:58Sure. But you had like one, a couple
- 1:04:01things you got to take into account here 1.
- 1:04:03The heightened awareness and attention given to that very
- 1:04:10issue. Like women like I, I don't want
- 1:04:14to get too deep into it, but like the me too movement and all
- 1:04:16that. So like a lot has happened in
- 1:04:18the last decade plus with these types of things.
- 1:04:23But hold on, I'll just finish my thought.
- 1:04:25I'll just finish my thought with those guys that you mentioned.
- 1:04:30You could for all intents and purposes you could you could
- 1:04:34round them out with their with the issue, fill in the blank,
- 1:04:38whatever it is, drugs, steroids, whatever you could.
- 1:04:42You could kind of put a bow around that and say that's how
- 1:04:46you're being defined. With Trevor Bauer you have to
- 1:04:48think he has this. He has his issues with with
- 1:04:54Manfred, he has the the drone issue he has spouting off on
- 1:05:00YouTube. He has just the arrogance that
- 1:05:04not a lot of people like it turns a lot of people off.
- 1:05:07There's just so much more he that he's too dimension like too
- 1:05:12multi dimensional when it comes to negativity.
- 1:05:14And I I don't think that that these front offices are going to
- 1:05:19want to put up with that. And it's clear to this point
- 1:05:21that nobody has taken that step forward to say we will.
- 1:05:27Yeah, I suppose. I mean, do you think this stink
- 1:05:31is is stinkier than, More lingering than the than the
- 1:05:36Astros than the scandal than the cheating and the.
- 1:05:42I mean like. No, but I mean, as we all know,
- 1:05:45man, and Manfred even said it himself didn't handle that the
- 1:05:48best way and people still let let the guys that were, I mean,
- 1:05:54who are we kidding? Not only the guys that were
- 1:05:56involved, but the guys that are on the team now that weren't
- 1:05:59even in the organization at the time, they they get their
- 1:06:01earful. So I'll tell you, man, baseball
- 1:06:07fans don't let you forget if they don't like you and they're
- 1:06:11and they're stuck in their ways, they're not changing their mind.
- 1:06:13They're going to let you know about it.
- 1:06:14And I think that's what's happening with Trevor Bauer
- 1:06:16here. It's hard to imagine you
- 1:06:22throwing 100 and not getting a shot.
- 1:06:30That's where we are, man. That's that's where we are with
- 1:06:33society and the fear of of blowback on something like this.
- 1:06:37Yeah. And like and again I want to
- 1:06:39speak for both of us here, we've addressed both sides of this.
- 1:06:43Like we understand that like there is, there is an inherent
- 1:06:48risk there regardless of the outcome.
- 1:06:50Like the there's just A to use your word, there's kind of a
- 1:06:53stink around it. But on the other side you have
- 1:06:57to look at the facts of the case and go is no team going to give
- 1:07:06this guy a shot? Is he?
- 1:07:09Is this it for him? Have we gotten to the end of the
- 1:07:12road for Trevor Bauer and Major League Baseball?
- 1:07:17I don't know. And if he doesn't get his shot,
- 1:07:20how does he ride this out? Does he run it back?
- 1:07:23Does he try to let it air out another year and make a another
- 1:07:28attempt in 2025? I would venture to say probably
- 1:07:31yes, because it's Trevor Bauer. This, I mean, it gives me Colin
- 1:07:35Kaepernick vibes, you know what I mean?
- 1:07:38Like, Kaepernick is still trying to send messages out.
- 1:07:42We played in like 6 years. So I think this is going to be
- 1:07:45around for a while is what it is.
- 1:07:52I don't know. Speaking of being around for a
- 1:07:54while, I think with the renderings that came out
- 1:07:59recently for the Oakland A's new Vegas ballpark, I think we're
- 1:08:04getting that much closer to the Oakland A's no longer being
- 1:08:08around in Oakland. But let me just say the
- 1:08:12renderings looks awfully familiar.
- 1:08:20Renderings look awfully familiar.
- 1:08:25I don't get that. A A particular Opera House in
- 1:08:29Australia, but we were informed by ownership that the Opera
- 1:08:37House in Sydney did not serve as inspiration for this project,
- 1:08:42although they look nearly identical.
- 1:08:47Yeah. Given given some of these white
- 1:08:50roofs, why did, Why did? It's got to be like a like a
- 1:08:56sustainability, like heat. What's it?
- 1:09:01Like a heat. Like a heat regulation thing of.
- 1:09:05This. You're not absorbing all that
- 1:09:08heat, but. I don't know.
- 1:09:10I. Don't know dude.
- 1:09:11Steer is black. So is Allegiant Stadium.
- 1:09:18I don't know. I think it's a Legion right.
- 1:09:20Or the Raiders play. I'm not a I'm not a sun
- 1:09:27scientist. Really thought they had that on
- 1:09:31the. Believe it or not, yeah, no, I'm
- 1:09:32not. Yeah, I whatever.
- 1:09:35I'm not I I'm over it. I don't want to talk about the
- 1:09:39A's. I don't even want to talk about
- 1:09:40the A's during the regular season.
- 1:09:42Well, I. I yes, I I'm with you on that.
- 1:09:45But can we just talk real quick about the quote UN quote
- 1:09:51Jumbotron in the rendering? Just hideous.
- 1:09:58This concept will never stick. And I'm not trying to sound like
- 1:10:02the guy that called the Internet a fad back in the day, but like,
- 1:10:05I I think, I think video board jumbotrons have been doing just
- 1:10:11fine. Why do we need to put like, this
- 1:10:13projection screen or it appears to be a projection projection
- 1:10:17screen? It says, like I read in the
- 1:10:20report, it says it's an 18,000 square foot video board, which
- 1:10:23will be the largest in Major League Baseball.
- 1:10:27But it looks like a projection screen because it's because of
- 1:10:31the curvature of the root or the the Dome.
- 1:10:34I guess they're calling it, which it's not even really a
- 1:10:36Dome because it's it's got an open back, which I don't really
- 1:10:40consider a Dome. Is it retractable or it's just
- 1:10:44stay that way? I don't know, man.
- 1:10:49That's what I'm and and the whole, which I'm sure it's not
- 1:10:52going to be this way in real life, but the whole interior in
- 1:10:55the rendering is like a green, a green glow.
- 1:10:59So are you telling me that the people sitting under the
- 1:11:01Jumbotron are going to look like Shrek for 9 innings every every
- 1:11:05night? Because that's going to get kind
- 1:11:07of old pretty quick. I did see a couple comments
- 1:11:13about the the Jumbotron though. And they said, they said of all
- 1:11:19of them, the comments were along lines of like of all the
- 1:11:21mistakes that they made, you know, like mimicking the Opera
- 1:11:25House, putting up this hideous Jumbotron.
- 1:11:27They at least got one thing right and it was leaving Anthony
- 1:11:30Rendon out of the lineup for the scoreboard mock up, which I have
- 1:11:35to, I have to agree with. And they also said.
- 1:11:37That that's incredible. They they said it's unrealistic
- 1:11:41in the sense that they're the Oakland A's wouldn't have that
- 1:11:45many players with that high of batting averages.
- 1:11:47And I have to agree with that one as well.
- 1:11:48So relax. Just relax.
- 1:11:51There. Just not a great, just not a
- 1:11:56great step, you know, if you're the the Oakland A's.
- 1:12:00Says nothing for me. I do like the open backdrop idea
- 1:12:06of like seeing the city. I do think that's kind of cool,
- 1:12:13but I don't know what that is. Is that are those windows?
- 1:12:16I I think it's enclosed. I think it is, yeah.
- 1:12:20So I think those are Windows an. Open back, yeah.
- 1:12:25I dread the idea of being a middle infielder and getting a
- 1:12:30cut off throw from left center if that's like a no wall kind of
- 1:12:36thing, just clear plexiglass or whatever, I don't know.
- 1:12:41Obviously renderings aren't like the final thing, so they're
- 1:12:44gonna make it up to baseball standards.
- 1:12:45But it I don't know, dude, I don't.
- 1:12:48But we've we've seen renderings that look a little better than
- 1:12:51this. I I hate it.
- 1:12:52I don't, I think. It's I stood on.
- 1:12:53I'm I'm not going to even address in my mind or
- 1:12:59acknowledge the fact that they're going to Vegas until
- 1:13:01they're there. That's fair.
- 1:13:03Yeah, that's fair. I won't subject to the Oakland
- 1:13:09A's talk anymore that we can we can call it.
- 1:13:12We can call it there. Let's.
- 1:13:14March 11th, we're going to call it there.
- 1:13:17No more ACE talk. No more ace talk until they move
- 1:13:21to Vegas, which I guess is like, what, 2029?
- 1:13:242028 they're going to play in where?
- 1:13:29Sacramento. Sacramento, probably.
- 1:13:32The parking lot at the Colosseum.
- 1:13:34Freaking mess. It's a mess.
- 1:13:38MLB handles stuff so strangely sometimes, then in an
- 1:13:42embarrassing way sometimes. Yep, Yep, we're we're put.
- 1:13:47So all I'd say, we're putting a hiatus on Ace Talk until what,
- 1:13:512029? 2028 That's the way Daddy likes
- 1:13:54it. I'm OK with that.
- 1:13:55Yeah. I.
- 1:13:56Don't hate that. Anything else you got?
- 1:14:01Man, buckle up for for Hot Takes episode.
- 1:14:04It's going to be fun up and probably set aside.
- 1:14:08I would go ahead and assume two hours of your day, multiple days
- 1:14:12maybe if you need to do it that way.
- 1:14:14Yep. Yeah, Yep.
- 1:14:15It's going to be at least two hours.
