- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Live show.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Live show?
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Studio audience?
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Um let us know what you want to see for that one.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: But uh, we're just talking and joking a little bit, all the the rearranging and the musical chairs of office going on around here.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: That's the thing.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: Life's getting back to normal a little bit.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Like we're hoping to make don't don't quote me on this, but start start groups back up in rooms that haven't been damaged maybe next week.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna start moving in that direction.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: We had to make sure the preschool had everything that they needed.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: So cats parsing all that stuff out, but the last thing will be fixed will be the offices because that's we gotta get everybody else open.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: So we we'll figure it out.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Moving along, a lot of work going on, still a lot of fans happening and plastic up and I don't know how much you can dry something.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: But probably not enough because then they're gonna cut it all out.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: But I mean, these these dryers, it's gotta be dry by now.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: I've I'm dry.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: I'm so dry.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, come in here, I need some lotion.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like that's right, zero humidity.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Um, that's good.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Hope you guys are are uh getting back to normal as well, whatever that is.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: You're picking up yard debris, all those things.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: You're yeah, hope everything's good.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: We're still dealing with uh insurance fund and all that kind of stuff, so you know part of the deal.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Still got roofers coming by my house every day.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: It's amazing how many of these industries are Christian, right?
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, everybody.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: That's that's what they start with.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: They're like, oh, you a pastor?
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: We're Christians then.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: I'm like it's a good selling point, huh?
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Great selling point.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: I guess start with that.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: I was I think start with your work and then let's go from there.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: That's a yeah, yeah.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Probably what this series is all about.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Are you good at what you do though?
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Like love that for you, but sometimes that's not a great thing, buddy.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, how are you at actually doing the thing?
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Um well, we're kicking off a new series this week.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: You're gonna run through this month and it's a care series.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: You want to tell us about that and what we can expect for that?
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm always amazed at these series.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: So we we put all these things on the board a year ago, uh over a year ago, it feels like.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: And um, this is that time and season where uh we we focus on it's it's kind of a Thanksgiving feel.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: So we focus on caring for one another, loving one another, nurturing.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: Um, this is also when we pull Celebrate Recovery in and we get a chance to share some testimonies as parts of the services, not this week, but uh the next two weeks.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: And um and so uh a year or so ago, this thing goes on the board about bearing with one another and the text that's found in Ephesians chapter four, and it's really uh Paul writing to the church and encouraging them to live the life that God has called them to live.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: And so there's a balance of how we do that vertically in our relationship with God, understanding that theology, but then also how we do that horizontally.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: So it's the love God, love your neighbor, just in different terms, um, by bearing with one another.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: But the word uh to bear means more than to we hear it and we're thinking like just tolerate.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: Like just bear with me.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Begrudgingly.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, begrudgingly.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: And it doesn't mean that.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: It means to hold up, to support, to encourage.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: So that's the picture of what Paul was encouraging the church in Ephesus to do.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: And we're going to so this week will be a uh a text in John, John chapter 14, which as soon as you start to hear it, you'll you'll recognize it.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: But then the next three weeks will be anchored in Ephesians.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: And it's really Paul giving instruction to the church as to how the shirt the church is designed, the church, the organization of the church, is designed to uh prepare um the actual church, which are the people, to to do the ministry that God has called them to.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna have fun with this.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: What what to you is about maybe the holiday season specifically?
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Do you feel like people are more inclined for one thing or another?
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: As far as maybe generosity, maybe it's understanding people and that interaction with people.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, is there anything about that specific season, time of the year that that sticks out to you?
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I I think it does.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: Uh I think for some reason this is the time when we're it's but it's a double-edged sword, right?
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: Like it it's the time when we seem to be most connected to family, but if you have challenges in family, it's the time when you are most disconnected or where you struggle the most.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: So all of that shows up.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: Plus, we're surrounded with a world that has figured out how to manipulate all of our emotions and they do it really, really well.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, for us as a church, we know we're just kind of following the church calendar.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: So you get into the Thanksgiving season, um, it's gonna make more sense that when you're in a mindset and you're tracking that those are gonna be the messages that that are that you're gonna be focused a little bit more on.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: There might be a time where we've drop a series in that is like a scratching of a record.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: But but it it's just not typically been our style.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: We're not we're we don't like to shock people like that.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: So so it makes sense, it fits right where we are.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: And um, so yeah, to to answer your question, this is that season where most of us are purchasing food, not just for our families, but we're gonna give back a little bit extra and help support those who uh maybe you know would love to have the opportunity to gather with their family but can't afford to.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: So um before we jump into the scripture, I just wanted to ask about all saints since that's Sunday, kicking off for those that don't know what that is or or what to do with that.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Can you explain a little bit?
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I try I laughed.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: I tried to talk about it a little bit on Sunday, but um, and I don't I don't have the time, man.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: So I don't know if that's something we need to pull up, but I believe it's six.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: Okay, six.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: And you're you're singing, so you should I am singing, but I don't definitely check that look it up.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: We usually check everything at six because the preacher can't remember what time.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: So but fact check that.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: But All Saints is a it is a traditional service, but as we typically do here, we we never do anything for the sake of tradition.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: We will dive into and see what something was about, and then we'll pull those real authentic, true connecting points that connect us to our faith, and we'll and we'll utilize that to really get to the heart of what a service or um a season was all about.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: So All Saints is is an opportunity to remember the lives of those who have passed before us.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: So it could be recent, it could be many, many years ago.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's just a it's a chance to gather, it's a chance to bear with one another, to support one another, to encourage one another, and to be there on a night.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: So November 1st.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: Um, Addy has a really beautiful way to honor the families.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: Um, she's gonna read the names.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: So we ask you uh to submit uh names of those that maybe you're thinking about that that you've lost, and there will be a time in the service where she'll read those names.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: But one of the most amazing things to me, and we hear this story every year, is there will be folks that lost somebody 20 years ago, and this will be the first time that they've heard that person's name mentioned in 20 years.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: It's so special.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, it just breathes life into you to know um to to just be reminded of a celebration of of that person's life.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: So there's that.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: She has other ways.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: Um, we're gonna put, you know, there's just some candles with some uh we'll put the names on there.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: And it's just a just a chance to gather, to love and to support one another.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: And and and you don't have to have lost somebody.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: You can just come and love and support folks as well.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and that's exactly what we're talking about being lived out.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Just being there and and being a presence for people that are either mourning or grieving, remembering, and uh you're just you're there to support.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: And yeah, I'm sure too, we all we've all had people we love that we've lost, so somewhere along the way, you know, yeah that that resonates.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: We can relate to those those feelings for sure.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: So John 14, John 14.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: So we're starting with the end in mind.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Starting with the end in mind.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's just it's where all saints fell.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: Okay, and this is the perfect text for it, right?
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: And and really, it's a perfect Jesus text, uh, because Jesus in John 14, this is in the farewell discourse.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: So in in John's gospel, he takes way more time to talk about the conversations that Jesus had with the disciples from the Last Supper all the way up until he was arrested.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: Like you get details that you get in no other gospels.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: And you may say, why?
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: Well, John was there.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, he just was there.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: And and the other three gospel accounts were already out there in the world.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: Uh scholars believe that John wrote his way, way later.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: And and and so if you're the last one to write, and possibly the last one living at the time, you get to fill in all the blanks.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: So there were probably moments in these conversations that John was thinking, I later.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: The world's got to know these things.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: I mean, they're they're super important messages.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: So he he puts them down, he gives them to us.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: But the setting for this, it it's it's John 14 follows, obviously John 13, but John 13 is is the Seder meal.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: Uh Jesus washes his disciples' feet.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: He um, if you just follow through the chapter, he uh he tells um he washes their feet, he gives them the the new uh he talks about um his betrayal that's gonna happen, and then he talks about Peter's denial.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: So all of these conversations are rolling and and the betrayal.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: So so they're sitting around the table and they're thinking, what is this all about?
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: What is going on?
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: And then he starts off John 14, which I think is so important.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: And remember, the the chapter breaks were put there way later, but he starts off with the Jesus quote, Do not let your hearts be troubled.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: Believe in God, believe also in me.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: They would have been pretty troubled if they understood at all what was going on, right?
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: So that's where this kind of launches out from there.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: So that setting is important to recognize.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: Final words, final exchange with the disciples.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: Jesus is going to get the most important information out there, and John gives it to us.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: It's kind of a cool thought to think John in his old age now understanding way more what all this was about.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: And so you can just picture that connection for him of just being like, oh man, this is so good.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: You know, and and and and and finally having a better understanding of that.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: To you, what is the that's the context?
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: He knows Jesus knows, you know, in less than 24 hours he's gonna be on a cross and um what's gonna happen, and now the disciples are gonna be scattered and scared and like sheep without a shepherd for this time.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: Why do you think this message to them is is so important?
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: Uh why Jesus is speaking to them?
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: Um I I almost imagine that he was speaking to all of us because they they're gonna do what they're gonna do.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: So I think this is gonna be for them later to look back and remember.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: Because they do what they do, they scatter, right?
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: It wasn't like they they weren't troubled, they were very troubled.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: They were so troubled they bailed.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: The only one that didn't bail was John.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: But it's probably because he was young and he was hanging out with his family, uh, you know, or with the ladies.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: He was kind of incognito.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: And I also believe this is a wayside note, so here's a tangent.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: I believe John was connected to the high priest or to somebody somebody in power.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: So he probably wasn't as threatened as the rest were, because remember, he got Peter into all the places, you get all of those stories.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think the message mattered maybe in that moment.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: Maybe Jesus saying, Do not let your hearts be troubled could have been an exact response to what was in the room as opposed to setting them up for what was gonna happen later.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: So maybe he's like, guys, chill out, you know, and then he goes into this.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: I but that's us reading into the text.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: We're always gonna try and wrestle it into our time frame.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, true.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: It does speak, I think, to people that are because this is your favorite live verse, following Jesus got the disciples horribly killed, all of them.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, it is.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, that's that's true, that's just the truth.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: So there is an element too of maybe when life doesn't go the way you expect it to go.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: Because I think they're probably in this following Jesus, they don't really have to think for themselves too much, although he's always challenging them to think for themselves.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: No, he's preparing them, he's trying to understand.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: But you can imagine being with Jesus, you're probably like, I mean, he's gonna take care of this.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't really need to worry about that, right?
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: So there's probably then this this time period where they're they're okay, they're learning, they're seeing miracles, they're they're living this these amazing experiences, but also maybe not as much ownership for themselves.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: And I think he's trying to prepare, like, hey, you know, this this is about to happen, and and he's warned them and he's and he's predicted it, and he's said this is actually better for you, uh, because what's gonna happen is is is the plan.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: That's that's what I want for you.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Um but I wonder too if there's just if there's speaking to hearts about when life doesn't go the way you thought it would go, and to still be able to not lose heart and lose faith.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: A hundred percent.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that's absolutely true.
- 13:32SPEAKER_02: This this this is probably the most used sermon, excuse me, set of scripture for memorial services.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Um, so when life goes maybe the way that you didn't think, or where there's a loss, or where there's something that's unexpected, the do not let your hearts be troubled.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: He's he but but then uh he throws to something way beyond, right?
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: So so his baseline of fact.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: So you make a statement and then you back it up.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: He says, Do not let your hearts be troubled.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Believe in God, believe also me.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: And then he gives you this thought.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: In my father's house, there are many rooms.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: And uh what I have would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you and go to prepare a place for you, and what I'm gonna come back and I'm gonna take you to be there.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: So don't don't don't let your hearts be troubled.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: In my father's house, there's tons of rooms.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go prepare a place and I'm gonna come back for you.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: They're sitting around a table.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: They'd just finished the Seder meal, they're four glasses of wine in.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: So I don't know there's any real way that they could have fully understood what he was saying.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: But he uses a reference that would have taken their mind maybe out of that moment to think about something bigger.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: I I don't know.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: Um, I love it because it really is kind of a jarring thought.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: Uh it's a it's a theological statement that Jesus makes that doesn't exactly fit, but he puts it there, which means it fits.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: So you've got to wrestle with it.
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: Um but but just like they're sitting around a table eating the Seder meal, they they've just received what we would say is communion.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: So a lot of big chunks of theology that are happening right here.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: Um, how about us?
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: We're living, we're living through our lives.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: We've just had a storm come through.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: You gotta get up, you gotta figure out how to go to work.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: So we're our our minds are on the tasks at hand.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: Maybe uh the for them this would have been a season where they're in all of the the richness of what's going on, and then Jesus gives them a big thought and he just kind of floats it out.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: That's why I think don't know that they would have fully understood it in the moment, but later they would have looked back and said, Oh, I got it.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: So you mentioned I'm glad you brought this up.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: This is like a a memorial service type scripture.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: It's used for memorial services.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: And the connection I thought of to that is something like Psalm 23, which we talked about.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: It's for the living.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: But again, this is like this is the setting is not a a death.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, it is, but it's but it's it's resurrection, right?
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, he knows what's gonna happen.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: And I and he's giving them this theology maybe to arm them for the life ahead versus like the end of a life.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: So go ahead.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Well, I just I guess the question is why why do you think these are then the things that we run to uh when we are looking at loss or death versus maybe the context of he's like, hey, this is how you have to live?
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: Um that's that's a great question.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: I I think because it is such it, it's it's such a weird text that it gives us an anchor in a moment where maybe we don't have a lot of clarity.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: Like, what does it mean that God but God's got many rooms in his house?
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: This is where all the mansions in the sky, all the songs come from, you know, some of the old hymns.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: Um, but but what what we miss in our Western theology, and and this this only made sense to me when we were in Zimbabwe, is there is a there's a there's a context for uh for this time of Jesus, where when a husband would take a wife, the father who owned uh a piece of land would um that that husband would be given a piece and he would have to go build onto the house and they would all be joined together in this same area.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: So he would add a room onto the house so that they could come and they could dwell there.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: So it was a there's a larger understanding connection.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: When we're in Zimbabwe, they have these things called crawls.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: Uh it's just a it's a piece of land the size of maybe this room that we're sitting in.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: And you would have, let's say, the chief of the village gave you this land and you would have your hut, which might be a six by six hut.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: You only slept in there and you might store some of your stuff in there, but you had a this piece of land, and when you're you'd have your children and you all still slept in that little six by still sleep it, they still do.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: And then eventually maybe your son would get married and you would extend your crawl.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: The chief will give you a little bit extra land, and they would just add on to it.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: So when he's saying this, he's letting them know the greater familial connection that I'm going to my father.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: This whole section is very Christological.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, if you just strip everything out, Jesus says, I and the father, if you look at me, you're gonna see the father.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: If you want to get to the father, you gotta go through me.
- 18:13SPEAKER_02: All of it has to do with this greater connection.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: So when everything comes down and you're scattered, don't let your hearts be troubled.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: Remember me.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: Remember me.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna come get you, I'm gonna take you to the Father.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: So Jesus is giving that baseline that anchor.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: I don't know if that answers your question, but but I think we can say a lot that we want to about this text.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: It's purely Jesus.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: Reminding us that Jesus is Jesus.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and even not getting lost in the house, the rooms, all that, because he says, and you'll be with me where I am.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: So the point is that connection to him.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Regardless of where we're gonna be, he's gonna come back.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be there.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Don't forget this is what this is about.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: Yep, and it and it has an and that little piece, and we love we love to make it about the thing that it's not really about.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: And this is about Jesus reminding us or telling us that he's connected to the Father.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: So that's gonna be the he's if you want to see the Father, look at me.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: Because then you get these questions from um Philip and you get the questions from Thomas, and they're they're pretty general, open anything we would ask.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: And Jesus is like, How long have you been with me?
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Like, you you know we've said this, we've covered this, and he he still answers the same questions.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: But um, anyways, I I just think it's it's Jesus reminding them just to stay focused that he's what he's doing is going to connect them to the greater truth, the greater understanding.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: The thing that's lost is the timing of this.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: I would love to know how long there was in between when he says, you know where I'm going.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: 30 seconds of silence maybe, and then he's like, uh no, no, we don't.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's you know elbowing each other.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Like they're looking at each other, saying who's gonna say something.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying anything because I know Thomas is gonna say something.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: You know, I would love to know how long, how long between those those statements.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, my guess is it probably didn't take long for Thomas to jump right on in.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: You don't think so?
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: No, no, and same thing with Philip.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: Lord, show us the Father, and Jesus, Jesus says to him, Have I been with you all this time, Philip?
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: And you still don't know me?
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:15SPEAKER_02: Have you seen me?
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: You've seen the Father.
- 20:19unknown: Yep.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: And Philip been like, okay.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Peter got him some a little bit before.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: Peter did, yeah, he's yeah, Jesus is getting everybody's getting a little taste.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: He's getting some.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: Um, no, it's good.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: This, I mean, it's true what you say about it being such a theological passage.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: You know, uh I am the way, the truth, and the life.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's a a keystone truth of of Jesus and and about how we how we connect back to the Father.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: Um for you, why is that I don't know, is that an awareness do you think we carry enough or not enough?
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: Or can change about that connection to the Father?
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: As far as like, okay, we just can live our lives and get a little bit distracted by doing the things we want to do versus maybe understanding the end in mind that that the life comes to an end.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: And then I know we're talking because we're talking about legacy, we're talking about finishing well.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: Um, what to you, what is what is finishing well look like?
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: Um that's a and therein lies the question, Jeff.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: I'd like see that see this, it's not a game that we play, but what happens in this podcast is whoever asks a question gets to sit and watch the other answer it.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: I think that's the question of life.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: And the more that we can be aware and the more that we can allow transformation to happen in our lives, I believe it's it's there's nothing there to earn.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: You can't earn it.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: Um it's I think it's the more that we can allow God to receive glory from our lives.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: So there's a this is a hundred.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: percent maybe this is Scott.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: So where I sit in my life today as I look at you know the what's going on in the church, which is amazing to see the outpouring in the church and the folks that are coming to faith.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: And um even in the midst of this crazy hurricane, it's that that's not going to deny um what God is wanting to do.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: Uh maybe it's I'm 55 now.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: Uh maybe it's got we got Tammy and I are almost empty nesters.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: Both kids are married and they got houses and all the cool stuff.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: So so your mind kind of shifts to all right this next season, you know, uh pray that someday we have grandkids and we get to celebrate all that, but there's like this window in between where you you take a deep breath and you look around.
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: And I so the words that are rattling around in my mind at when I encounter challenges whether it's personal or in the church is so how's God going to get glory out of this?
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: So when when Jesus says if you want to know the Father, look at me, Jesus was glorifying the Father all the time, or instructing or letting people know or giving us a way to live.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: That's why the bear with one another is so important because the way that we do that is the way that Jesus taught us to do that.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: So the more that we can get ourselves out of the way is the more that this kingdom can be impactful and can grow.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: A lot of times we'll look at this verse and we use it for exactly what we use it for, which is four verses that allow us to feel better when somebody has passed.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: And that's important and that's very, very important because a little insight um when really he wasn't trying to prepare them for when they pass.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: He's trying to let them know I'm gonna go do this.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna prepare a place I'm gonna come back and I'm gonna get you that's Jesus is the main part of all of every single bit of that.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: So the more that we can make our lives about Jesus and allowing ourselves to be transformed in light of Jesus to me is is the answer to the question.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: But the ultimate why still not for ourselves it's for the kingdom.
- 24:01SPEAKER_02: It's for God's glory it's for God to be revealed um so it's it's taking on whatever that message is for the kingdom and allowing God to be on full display.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah I love it.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: Uh that may not feel like it it doesn't man it's not the way that we're all taught in this let's just say in our uniquely um patriotic, amazing United States of America, which nothing wrong with any of that stuff.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: But be the best you you can be like go accomplish and do all the great things and you can do all those things just remember that the every single thing that's been given to you is is there to to honor glory to God.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: So if you can understand that that's the underlying driven nature and really we don't we don't have anything the very breath in our lungs doesn't belong to us and someday it it'll be gone.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: So so allow that to be what shapes a new business that you start.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: Allow that to be what shapes the hardest conversations that you go into with your children an investment that you make um every single aspect Jeff I I um oh man it's a big idea it's a big topic it's a huge topic yeah and and we how often do you think we actually are aware in our day in 24 hours on a on a good day an hour on Sunday morning where you're sitting and you're focused and you're intent and you're you're wanting to learn but then as soon as you get out we could go back into the and there might be snapshots where you're like ooh I gotta pay attention or ooh I got to do this or oh that's beyond me and so you dial in.
- 25:47SPEAKER_02: So in the scope of a day how long are we actually dialed into what God is asking us to do and calling us to do and and I'm I'm I'm not I'm I'm not ridiculous.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't think that we're all of a sudden going to be 24 hours a day focused on every single thing.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah but I think we should be continually prodding and challenging and being aware of yeah there's there's no doubt these moments maybe the conversation the time that we're just focused on scripture is the most important thing we can do for ourselves in our heart because you're discipled by something all the time and I think we have to realize how much our culture does shape us.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: The way we think the way we feel about things and it is a culture that tells you you are the most important thing to you in the world and you need to do what makes you happy and those you know those feelings are a hundred percent legit and you should listen to those and and you should but filter them through what is true.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: You know and and understanding our feelings are pretty fleeting and can be manipulated as you touched on earlier.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: And so you have to really check those against scripture against the spirit living in us against other believers you know people that you trust and know are walking with the Lord too like hey what do you think about this this is going on this is how I'm feeling I mean that those kinds of practices are are so important yeah to to to being shaped into to living lives of faith.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: Yep and and and we are this is a message that's as old as time and every preacher likes to bang this drum but we're living in a time when the world has figured out how to mark it to us psychologically to where they can just pull the strings.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: They know the messages they know the words and maybe that's always been the case but now we're inundated with it every single moment of every single day right it's it's on such a big scale.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: So you've got to be intentional to to understand this for you know Jesus gives them an anchor point in what's about to be the most um trauma bonding time of their lives right where they've spent three years walking with a guy that raised people from the dead and now he's about to be killed in the most horrific way ever.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: And then tag their it.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: And it was not even though they he told them it was not what they expected.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: It was there's no he totally told he told them multiple times.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: We have we have so many tech contexts but you get that too I think you see him speaking to them just as brothers because he knows why where did Jesus go?
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Why did he go?
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: He was supposed to be the one he's the messiah but he's gone he's like I'm going but I'm coming back and you have to understand what I'm doing is the father's will for all this.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: So he's speaking to them just as humans I feel like of saying where where did our teacher go?
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Where's Jesus?
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: What happened?
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah what happened and you know he's he's definitely uh I think comforting them in that saying like no no no this is where I'm going and I'm coming back.
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah I I I use so I use this verse um in in we had a memorial service for Damon Wright this uh this past uh this week uh Monday amazing uh I'll call him a young man uh 54 uh just awesome family incredible father uh you know the insepid disease of ALS uh just an amazing athlete um uh played at the highest levels of sports in the NFL um and three children that are uh unbelievable uh in in their own rights and and an and an amazing wife and as I sat and I listened to the stories that the children were sharing one of the things that Damon did is he he would always he would he would encourage them in the funniest way.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: He loved to talk trash.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: And so he would wake the boys up at 5 a.m and he would have a little whiteboard where he wrote down their times but he always had his time on there.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: His time was always better there's a and then he would get out there and he'd run and and he would have them up until they finally beat him and then he would then he would find something else that he could beat them at right whatever it was but it was always to encourage and so so when I when I was trying to figure out a way to sort of summarize um you know where all of that comes together this this verse that so many theologians they don't know what to do with it.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: But uh John 1412 he says very truly I tell you the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and in fact will do greater works than these because I'm going to the Father um which which if you read that on its face value you're like Jesus says we're gonna be better than him and then everybody starts to dive into the Greek well maybe greater means larger amounts of um I have no idea and I don't want to get stuck in those weeds I'd rather look at the heart of that because I believe that's the heart of Damon but I also believe this is the heart of God that God would want us to thrive and allow our lives to be transformed in such a way that we see kingdom come in a way that maybe Jesus didn't see during his time because when he left there were 12 and then maybe the group that was around him but you know we was we gather well there was thousands there were still thousands that were receiving it but maybe that that outpouring and the Holy Spirit and and in the natural and Jesus you know in God's sense still sees it all whatever I don't even know what that means.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: But as God he sees the outpouring.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: But so much of it is you and I being obedient to what God has called us to it's the team it's it's you and the work that we do in the hurricane seeing the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that went outside of Santa Rosa County right last week's message we talked about how the region of the Galilee was about a thousand square miles.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: And here in Gulf Breeze if you just look at our county it's just over a thousand square miles and I I challenge the church to remember that Jesus changed the entire globe from the amount of space that we live in that was it.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: So we have that opportunity to do some great things if we just allow it to transform our lives.
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: So I read that and it just encourages me to know that that God's heart for us is to be a part of some pretty stellar things.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: And I'm here for it man.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: I'm excited about it.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: It also comes along with all the understandings of the very difficult things that they were walking through we're going to do those same things but um many times those are what brings about those moves and sometimes it's worse right before it gets better and put every platitude you ever have right here in this space in the podcast.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: Your favorite platitudes might have been the only one that died of old age but it wasn't because they didn't try.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: They tried they tried yeah getting boiled that would not be a way I would boiled in oil.
- 32:37SPEAKER_02: I don't know if oil's better than water but man that but he made it and then they stuck him on an island that didn't do it.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: He he lived so long that the leadership the Roman leadership that was in that place all died off.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: And they said you know what maybe we should let this guy go back to work.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah so yeah well that's good man uh you've got me fired up about this series.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: I'm excited yeah for a set of verses that is that are often used in a memorial service which which is is meant to offer hope these are life yeah these are life for people in an all saints service that are really grieving the loss of a loved one to be able to go let's go man I mean we know that those who've gone on before us Jesus came and got them and there's a maybe don't fully understand what it looks like but there's a place where they're okay.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:22SPEAKER_02: And so let's go be a part of what what we're called to and let's see these greater things.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: Let's see what God's gonna do.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: And I I can wrap my mind and my heart around that.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: Awesome dude.
- 33:35SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 33:35SPEAKER_02: So where are we gonna be next week man?
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: We're still in the couch room um but but the couch is arranged in a way where everybody's facing each other.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna set up shop there in one of those rooms but I need the fan to go away and the plastic we can always unplug those fans.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: We gotta plug them back in though because everything will start getting wet again.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: I guess just start falling down.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna hear a word we say that which might might be what they prefer.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah yeah you never know okay well Sunday kicking off uh what are we calling this thing?
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Bear with one another.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: Okay I think that's close.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Fair with one another like it so camped out a lot in Ephesians will be starting with John 14 this week and then Sunday after service Sunday evening for start all state service out in the in the uh be a beautiful time so invite you guys to do all of that and uh we love y'all thanks for tuning in to 100% baby love you see you guys
