- 0:02Speaker 1: What's up, everybody, and welcome to JFK Book Reviews, a
- 0:04Speaker 1: division of the Lone Gum and Podcast. I'm Rob Clark,
- 0:08Speaker 1: He's Joe Borelli, and today we're going to be reviewing
- 0:11Speaker 1: the book Marina Oswald by Joakim Joston or Jokim Jostin
- 0:19Speaker 1: whoever you want to say is name. Now that one
- 0:23Speaker 1: of us have a physical copy of the book, hence
- 0:26Speaker 1: the graphic.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think Rob, this is our first book
- 0:33Speaker 2: that we've were reviewed by an author for the second
- 0:36Speaker 2: time quite possibly.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Probably won't be the last either, Probably won't be the
- 0:42Speaker 1: last year. This book here was originally published in London
- 0:45Speaker 1: in nineteen sixty seven by Peter Donne Limited. The version
- 0:51Speaker 1: that we have is a PDF version. It was redone
- 0:54Speaker 1: in twenty fifteen by Dally Plaza UK Bernard Wiles, to
- 0:57Speaker 1: be specific, from what we could find online. The original
- 1:06Speaker 1: and I'm not sure if it was if it was
- 1:08Speaker 1: originally in Dutch or what the deal was, but apparently
- 1:12Speaker 1: it was one hundred and sixty seven pages long. This
- 1:16Speaker 1: version we have has been whittled down to sixty three.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I don't know if that's just a translation thing or
- 1:22Speaker 1: if they cut some stuff out of here when they
- 1:25Speaker 1: rewrote it in twenty fifteen for Daily Plaza UK. I
- 1:28Speaker 1: don't know one hundred percent, but this book contains thirteen
- 1:35Speaker 1: short chapters. If I had a physical copy of the book, though,
- 1:39Speaker 1: this thing would be skin and bones. Yes, I might
- 1:43Speaker 1: fine if I was slapping this thing.
- 1:44Speaker 2: If we had it real, you could do a.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Perten and break it in half. I looked for this
- 1:57Speaker 1: book on all the usual places, Joe, and it is
- 2:02Speaker 1: not for sale anywhere. So if you can find a
- 2:05Speaker 1: copy of this book somewhere, like in a rat As
- 2:08Speaker 1: bookstore somewhere, you probably should scoop it up. Because I
- 2:12Speaker 1: couldn't find a copy for sale anywhere. Luckily for you,
- 2:17Speaker 1: Joe has found a free PDF copy, probably from archives
- 2:21Speaker 1: dot org or whatever exactly, And we'll put the link
- 2:25Speaker 1: in the description. If this book interests you and you
- 2:28Speaker 1: can check it out, Yo. King Josn has written several
- 2:36Speaker 1: JFK books, including Oswald Assassin or Fall Guy, Oswald The Truth,
- 2:41Speaker 1: this one here Marina Oswald, and I believe another one
- 2:45Speaker 1: called The Garrison Inquiry. Very short books. But he was
- 2:54Speaker 1: one of these guys to put out a book before
- 2:57Speaker 1: the Warren Commission report came out that would be Assassin
- 3:01Speaker 1: or fall Guy. So, and there was a lot of
- 3:04Speaker 1: good information in it. So, Joe, this book definitely has
- 3:09Speaker 1: a conspiracy lean to it. So why don't you get
- 3:12Speaker 1: us started here with the very slim portion of meat
- 3:17Speaker 1: and potato.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah, so I think this book was published. It was
- 3:23Speaker 2: published in nineteen sixty seven, but it was in between
- 3:27Speaker 2: his first book Oswalt Assassin or Fall Guy nineteen sixty
- 3:31Speaker 2: four pre Warm Report and Oswald The Truth nineteen sixty seven.
- 3:36Speaker 2: This book was also sixty seven, so he was popping
- 3:39Speaker 2: them out wrong. He was definitely popping them out. And
- 3:46Speaker 2: let's see, it's kind of like a biographical, semi analytical
- 3:54Speaker 2: account of Marina's whole life and as people familiar with
- 4:00Speaker 2: the case might be, she had a very and had
- 4:06Speaker 2: as she's still alive, very interesting life. And it also
- 4:11Speaker 2: ties into his skepticism of the Warrant Commission's lone gunment conclusion.
- 4:17Speaker 2: He kind of uses her story to probe some of
- 4:24Speaker 2: the inconsistencies and the official narrative. He goes into some
- 4:28Speaker 2: of her testimony, and like you mentioned, there are thirteen
- 4:37Speaker 2: very short chapters and I'm going to read from a
- 4:40Speaker 2: couple of them from the first chapter.
- 4:44Speaker 1: This is called the entire book. It won't take very long.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Yeah right, yeah, oh, we're not going to make this
- 4:49Speaker 2: a thirty minute book review like last time. But this
- 4:52Speaker 2: has caught me by this how the book starts, This
- 4:56Speaker 2: has caught me by complete surprise, and naturally I was shocked.
- 4:59Speaker 2: All I know about the plan for my son, obviously,
- 5:02Speaker 2: this being Marguerite marrying Marina Oswald is what I have
- 5:06Speaker 2: seen and read. I haven't talked to him yet. Thus
- 5:11Speaker 2: old missus Porter, which I guess it was quoted after
- 5:16Speaker 2: she married Porter, which was in uh yes, not Margarite.
- 5:20Speaker 2: This is Porter's mother, Porter's mother, Okay. Bewildered by the
- 5:24Speaker 2: sudden on Russian publicity, was trying to cope with the
- 5:27Speaker 2: inquisitive inquisition into the questions the newsman crowding her around
- 5:35Speaker 2: her modest home in West Texas. Chapter three, The Wayward Girl.
- 5:44Speaker 2: One cannot even attempt to fathom the enigma of Marina's
- 5:48Speaker 2: unwifely behavior during her husband's two day ordeal, nor her
- 5:53Speaker 2: role as an independent widow and different widow ready to
- 5:57Speaker 2: cooperate with his acute without going back to her dim
- 6:03Speaker 2: origins In wartime Russia, Chapter five, Marriage on the Rebound.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Oswald was neither handsome nor bright, and he had little personality.
- 6:15Speaker 2: He was young, eager to live and live well, self centered,
- 6:20Speaker 2: and vain to cap all of this. He was even
- 6:22Speaker 2: more naive than the average run of the American innocence abroad,
- 6:27Speaker 2: including spies. So yeah, I guess he t you know,
- 6:37Speaker 2: he tries to explore whether what Marina's motives were. And
- 6:44Speaker 2: this was before any of the information came about her
- 6:50Speaker 2: allegend relationship with one other defector, Robert Webster right, who
- 6:56Speaker 2: was not mentioned in this book, granted that is nineteen
- 6:59Speaker 2: sixty seven, chapter six, in the Lion's Mouth. Immediately after
- 7:05Speaker 2: coming to the United States, Lee changed. I did not
- 7:09Speaker 2: know him as much of a man in Russia. He
- 7:12Speaker 2: helped me as before, but he became a little more recluse.
- 7:15Speaker 2: He was very irritable sometimes for a trifle. And yeah,
- 7:22Speaker 2: he definitely was. And you know, when we talk about
- 7:27Speaker 2: Lee and Marina's relationship, we always talk about on our
- 7:30Speaker 2: show on how it's like an old girlfriend who is
- 7:33Speaker 2: going back and forth. Right, they break up, they get
- 7:36Speaker 2: back together, they break up, they get back together. You know,
- 7:40Speaker 2: they fight, they live in a different area, they live
- 7:42Speaker 2: with different people. It's I think jo Justine kind of
- 7:50Speaker 2: really captured that pretty early on. And last thing I'm
- 7:59Speaker 2: gonna read from the book Confessions of Marina Lee Harvey Oswald,
- 8:03Speaker 2: severely griddled for twelve hours by the DPPD, the FBI,
- 8:07Speaker 2: and the Secret Servers, never confessed that he had killed
- 8:09Speaker 2: either the President or Tippet. That didn't matter though in
- 8:13Speaker 2: the eyes of the Warren Commission, they got plenty of
- 8:15Speaker 2: confession confessions by proxy from Marina, the bereaved widow. The
- 8:22Speaker 2: trouble is that Marina overdid it. Ain't that the truth? Right?
- 8:27Speaker 2: You talk about the Nixon story and all that stuff.
- 8:30Speaker 2: She not only admitted everything about everything the Commission wanted
- 8:34Speaker 2: her to hear, but also volunteered some additional confessions that
- 8:39Speaker 2: proved embarrassing. Marina's exceptional performance as a tearful widow, ready
- 8:47Speaker 2: willing and able to crucify her dead husband, even above
- 8:52Speaker 2: and beyond the call of duty, is matched only by
- 8:55Speaker 2: the even more extraordinarily performance or extraordinary performance of the
- 9:00Speaker 2: Secret Service. Having failed in its primary responsibility of guarding
- 9:06Speaker 2: the president, the Secret Service instead took charge of his wife,
- 9:10Speaker 2: Marina and presumed assassin and nobody solves a problem like Marina, which,
- 9:22Speaker 2: if you're old enough, that is a sound of music reference.
- 9:27Speaker 2: But Rob, I'm gonna actually one more thing to We're
- 9:31Speaker 2: hand it off to you for your thoughts. Once Marina's
- 9:34Speaker 2: full cooperation had thus been secured, the secret Service outdid
- 9:38Speaker 2: itself and by providing her also with a quote business manager,
- 9:43Speaker 2: a man named Jim Martin who also happened to be
- 9:45Speaker 2: the manager of the motel where Marina was sequestered, as
- 9:49Speaker 2: well as the services of an attorney, John Martin Thorne.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Between them, these two gentlemen really did an outstanding job
- 9:57Speaker 2: of getting the confessing sheen started and keeping her going
- 10:02Speaker 2: until eventually all three fell out over the spoils and
- 10:08Speaker 2: a financial settlement lawsuit had to be worked out in court.
- 10:13Speaker 2: So we've talked about this a lot on our show,
- 10:18Speaker 2: Rob and how both James r. And Martin and John
- 10:22Speaker 2: Martin Thorne had really did a fantastic job of turning
- 10:28Speaker 2: Marina into the grieving widow into the star witness of
- 10:32Speaker 2: the work commission. Not an easy task, and I don't
- 10:38Speaker 2: think out of the many fantastic coincidences that we encounter
- 10:42Speaker 2: in this case, this one was not by design, and
- 10:49Speaker 2: I think if you've listened to our thoughts in our shows,
- 10:53Speaker 2: you can come up with how we feel about this.
- 10:57Speaker 2: So with that, Rob, I will hand it to you
- 10:59Speaker 2: for your thoughts and ratings.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Yes, I'd read this book many years ago and perused
- 11:08Speaker 1: again recently for this and I was reminded, at least
- 11:16Speaker 1: in my opinion, this is not one of my favorite
- 11:20Speaker 1: Jokim Yosten books. I don't feel that he brought much
- 11:28Speaker 1: new information to the table as opposed to his other books,
- 11:32Speaker 1: even from a speculative point of view, not even factual.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I don't think we learned anything about Marina that wasn't
- 11:43Speaker 1: in the Warren Commission, or wasn't in the Warren Report.
- 11:51Speaker 1: By nineteen sixty seven, there should have been much much
- 11:57Speaker 1: more information that could have been gleaned. There could have
- 12:00Speaker 1: been a lot more about Porter and their marriage. There
- 12:07Speaker 1: was things in the newspaper. You know he was he
- 12:10Speaker 1: was arrested for beating Marina early early in their relationship,
- 12:15Speaker 1: which is not in the book. And a lot of
- 12:19Speaker 1: this book, even though it's supposed to be about Marina,
- 12:23Speaker 1: it's about Oswalt, which you know you already wrote two
- 12:30Speaker 1: books on the dude. I mean, how many more do
- 12:34Speaker 1: you need? You know, you learn in this book. You
- 12:39Speaker 1: know about Oswald and his previous uh, his previous paramours
- 12:46Speaker 1: in Russia, if you will, but pre Marina mm hm.
- 12:50Speaker 1: And you know, of course he's trying to paint a
- 12:53Speaker 1: picture of Oswald in a certain way. And you know,
- 13:01Speaker 1: he doesn't even broach the subject that Marina could possibly
- 13:04Speaker 1: be OKGB spy you know, or a swallow or anything
- 13:10Speaker 1: like that. It's just it's just hyper critical about the
- 13:17Speaker 1: way Marina treated Lee. And like I said, honestly, I'm
- 13:24Speaker 1: not really a big fan of this book. Like I said,
- 13:26Speaker 1: I didn't learn much from reading it. I'm glad it
- 13:30Speaker 1: was very short.
- 13:33Speaker 2: You could read it in today, that's for sure, and
- 13:35Speaker 2: maybe a.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Couple hours one hour. So I'm just going to leave
- 13:43Speaker 1: it at that. For me, I'm going to give this
- 13:46Speaker 1: book a big fat two guns up. Oh that's it.
- 13:55Speaker 1: That's all you get.
- 13:59Speaker 2: You well, you know, like you mentioned, he didn't really
- 14:07Speaker 2: broach the subject of was she a spy or honey
- 14:11Speaker 2: potter or swallow or whatever you want to call her,
- 14:13Speaker 2: And that is of course a big question. I will
- 14:18Speaker 2: say this, what Marina was able to do after initially
- 14:24Speaker 2: lying to the Secret Service and FBI and make hundreds
- 14:29Speaker 2: of thousands of dollars, maybe even more. We don't even
- 14:33Speaker 2: know the true total. I give definitely give her a
- 14:37Speaker 2: lot of credit for that. Of course, she was surrounded
- 14:42Speaker 2: by spooky people her whole life when she got to America,
- 14:48Speaker 2: right in terms of the de Moorn Shields, the Pains,
- 14:55Speaker 2: the White Russians, the Fords, possibly poor Ah, and she
- 15:03Speaker 2: managed to leverage her unfortunate position into you know, raising
- 15:13Speaker 2: her two kids, Junior and Rachel, into what today are
- 15:18Speaker 2: two successful and happy women with I believe grandchildren as well.
- 15:24Speaker 2: So but yeah, I did wish this book went a
- 15:30Speaker 2: little further into some of these questions that we've talked about.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I don't think we've done a book review on just Marina,
- 15:42Speaker 2: so maybe this wasn't the best one to start with.
- 15:44Speaker 2: That's my fault. But I do think there are some
- 15:48Speaker 2: interesting tidbits in there, and I am going to go
- 16:04Speaker 2: very middle of the road because you can get it
- 16:08Speaker 2: for free on archives dot org. Four guns up a
- 16:18Speaker 2: little lesson, but if you have an hour, you can
- 16:24Speaker 2: finish it. You might learn a tidbit or two. And
- 16:28Speaker 2: I am a big fan of the author, So what
- 16:32Speaker 2: are you gonna do? Not everyone can be a banger, right, This.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Is definitely a dud, but that's the trick. You know,
- 16:41Speaker 1: you got to read it to find out that's true.
- 16:46Speaker 1: And folks, if you liked this little book review here,
- 16:49Speaker 1: we do also a podcast every Friday night live streamed
- 16:55Speaker 1: at seven pm Eastern here on YouTube and on Wednesday
- 16:58Speaker 1: at seven pm Eastern for our channel members only exclusively,
- 17:04Speaker 1: and you know, we dive into all different aspects of
- 17:08Speaker 1: the Kennedy assassination. So if that type of thing turns
- 17:11Speaker 1: you on, make sure you check us out. And in
- 17:14Speaker 1: the meantime, we'll throw up some videos here for you
- 17:16Speaker 1: to check out, maybe the last book review, maybe our
- 17:18Speaker 1: playlist somewhere over there. And until next time, folks, I'm
- 17:25Speaker 1: Rob Clark, He's Joe Borelli or he's Joe Borelli, and
- 17:31Speaker 1: we'll see you next time.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Peace,
