- 0:06Hello. What's your least favorite scary
- 0:08movie? I love the smell of the hunt and
- 0:13the taste of the shunt. Welcome to what your least
- 0:18favorite scary movie? The podcast where we talk about
- 0:20the good, the bad, the ugly, and the downright absurd in all of
- 0:24our favorites. And least favorite?
- 0:25Scary movies. 'Cause we believe every horror
- 0:27movie rightfully has its fan base.
- 0:29Even if we don't always get it my.
- 0:31Name is Travis. My name's Jesse and we are
- 0:34rounding out prom month and our anniversary with a little flick
- 0:40best known as Society. I was gonna say in a on a bang,
- 0:45but then I also wanna say it on a shunt.
- 0:48I mean, all of those work now. We're using the prom month theme
- 0:55very loosely here 'cause it's a coming out party and we don't
- 0:58actually see it. But I'm just gonna, I'm gonna
- 1:02pull the mom and dad card here and say our show our rules.
- 1:06We're doing this because we said so.
- 1:08Yeah, look, man, like we're gonna be a little bit limited
- 1:11with some of the prom movies that we can do.
- 1:13There's only so many of those out there.
- 1:15And in my heart, I felt like this one fit.
- 1:18I I agree. It it fits, it's it's a fun
- 1:21movie. There's a whole party here.
- 1:22If you don't count the shunt, the shunting as like a whole
- 1:27party or an after party of sorts, then I don't know, like.
- 1:30To be fair, I think a lot of us might have had a better time at
- 1:33prom if we did have a shunting. I don't know.
- 1:40I don't know, man, I don't. Know I I guess it depends on
- 1:42your perspective if you're the shunter or the shuntee.
- 1:45Look man, we gotta get in. OK, Yeah.
- 1:47We we can talk about the shunt all day long.
- 1:49We and we will. We will, but.
- 1:52When it's appropriately time. OK, so announcements for our
- 1:58budget tier bubbies. We did release your May bonus
- 2:02episode like last. It was on Thursday.
- 2:07Was it Thursday? OK.
- 2:08We did it on Thursday nights. It was on the Strangers chapter
- 2:12one. We did a whole little mini
- 2:14episode for that. Yeah, we did.
- 2:15All of our we did a little bit of background, some of the stuff
- 2:18that was available now, good, bad, ugly and absurd.
- 2:21We actually had a really good conversation about it.
- 2:23Yeah, it was a fun time. And, you know, even if you
- 2:26haven't seen the movie, I still think, you know, you can listen
- 2:28to a good chunk of that and not really have anything ruined for
- 2:31you. And we'll tell you when we get
- 2:33there. Specifically, say we're about to
- 2:35start talking about spoilers because we can't avoid it for
- 2:37the things we want to say. Yeah, we do very clearly
- 2:39delineate when that happens. But if you.
- 2:41Listen to that episode, I think you'll probably feel
- 2:44comfortable. Like maybe we should give people
- 2:46warning. The Stranger chapter one's like
- 2:47a remake of the first one. So like, yeah, you'll be fine to
- 2:51watch it. Yeah, we mentioned that on our
- 2:53episode last week. You'll be fine to.
- 2:55Listening. So we're not really revealing
- 2:57anything. There's a.
- 2:58Couple of things. But we make it clear.
- 3:01Yeah, I think specifically where we post where we like mentioned
- 3:05spoilers was where they were major difference, yes.
- 3:08So I do think that we. It's fun.
- 3:11Delineated that, yeah. So and if you're not a budget
- 3:13tier patron, you can find that link in our show notes.
- 3:16Very, very bottom. Just scroll to the bottom right
- 3:18here right now. It'll take you right to our
- 3:19Patreon. Also our budget and bug Ted tier
- 3:22bubbies can now or have already voted them.
- 3:26No, it's open until tomorrow night as of the day of this
- 3:29release. You're right.
- 3:30For our. For their vote for June, yeah,
- 3:34which we are doing Pride month again.
- 3:36So these are themed appropriately and we will talk
- 3:39about that a little bit more at the end of this episode.
- 3:42True. So you can cast your votes now,
- 3:43though, just to let you know. Yes, Yeah.
- 3:45OK. Well, I have our poll results.
- 3:48OK, so this is saw X, saw X, which was our what's the term
- 3:56chaperone for the prawn. You OK?
- 3:59No, I think we established I'm not.
- 4:02OK. Yeah, OK.
- 4:03And as usual we did. Which trap?
- 4:10OK, yeah, we we talked about which trap do you think you
- 4:14could survive. Planned and now I can't remember
- 4:16any of the words I want to use. Which trap do you think you
- 4:19could survive? AKA who would you survive?
- 4:24Wait, which one would you surprise to be able to go to
- 4:25prom with? Yeah, OK.
- 4:27I got there what I got there eventually.
- 4:30I like where your head's at because I know that you're
- 4:32focused fully on society. And yeah.
- 4:36But we got to like, hold on. My.
- 4:39We can't let the wheels fall off this early.
- 4:41On my brain has been sucked out by the rich.
- 4:43It's fine. OK, Yeah, we have our Saw X pole
- 4:47here where we do like all of our franchise, specifically Saw
- 4:52episodes. Which trap you think he would
- 4:54survive? I don't think we did anything
- 4:55with Prom relating to it. We said it was the chaperone and
- 4:59we did both. I was saying, AKA, how are you
- 5:03gonna be able to get to prom after you've been in John
- 5:06Trainer's hands? Could do.
- 5:08John Trainers. John Cramer's hands.
- 5:11Yeah, OK, so the four traps that we chose, there were more than
- 5:16that in this movie, but we chose the wire trap, the brain surgery
- 5:20trap, the pipe bomb trap and the radiation trap.
- 5:23So just to be clear, 50% of these here you can actually
- 5:27survive as demonstrated in the movie.
- 5:30So So what people chose? Nobody chose the wire trap. 20%
- 5:35chose the brain surgery trap. Who the fuck does that?
- 5:38I think people chose, people avoided the wire trap because
- 5:41it's got the Julie saw and everybody's so traumatized by
- 5:45the movie Julie, starring Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck.
- 5:48You might be on to something, I don't know.
- 5:49I've never seen this so I don't have that fear.
- 5:52Within the pipe bomb trap, 40% voted for and 40% also voted the
- 5:58radiation trap. Meanwhile on Twitter, 33% the
- 6:02wire trap. So known wasn't Twitter fans.
- 6:04Twitter is wild. I am sure there are people that
- 6:07are actually such hardcore benefit fans.
- 6:09They were like hell yeah, gobble gobble.
- 6:10Well, they're getting divorced again, so it's.
- 6:14Yeah, I'm not. I'm not surprised by that.
- 6:15Yeah. OK.
- 6:16And 67% the radiation trap was the final.
- 6:22As a recap, I remember saying that I felt I could handle the
- 6:26radiation trap because I have a great deal of experience with
- 6:29broken bones and falling from heights.
- 6:31Yeah, you, you've got that down pat.
- 6:34I think I can do the pipe bomb one pretty easily.
- 6:38You just got to cut it out of your arm and you know that one
- 6:42like it hurts, but like it's it's not like I'm not fucking
- 6:47with my potential like brain future.
- 6:50Like OK, it's clearly not in a good state as it is right now
- 6:54from how I'm talking. See, that's why I didn't take
- 6:56the brain trap, because we know I can't afford to learn my
- 6:59brain. Future.
- 6:59Yeah. Yeah, no.
- 7:02Like I'm already too smooth up here as it is.
- 7:04Same. So, you know, maybe I've maybe
- 7:07I've got some despair. Then I.
- 7:09Don't know like whatever. I'm already this fucking or
- 7:11whatever. No, it's it's the pie bombs.
- 7:13It's yeah, it's simple as that. So we did the two ones that are
- 7:16actually survivable as demonstrated.
- 7:18But men the traps in that movie were hardcore.
- 7:22So it's it's tough goings no matter how you.
- 7:25How you go? So OK, that's it for our poll
- 7:28results. So let's talk about some
- 7:30society. Society for you.
- 7:36All right. OK, so society.
- 7:39It's initial premiere was May 13th, 1989 at the Cannes Film
- 7:45Festival. The wide US release was not
- 7:48until June 11th, 1992. Whoa.
- 7:51Really. Yes.
- 7:52Damn. Yes, it took a little bit for
- 7:54them to negotiate on what could be seen.
- 7:59And I think ultimately, as we saw in the special features,
- 8:03that he just had to release a director's cut because the MPAA
- 8:09was not down with the shunting. Yeah.
- 8:11Is anyone shocked? No, He.
- 8:14Said they wanted him to cut it. Cut the ending of the movie,
- 8:17essentially. Cut.
- 8:18The denim. Why?
- 8:22Why? Okay.
- 8:25So we watched this on our Blu-ray, but as of today you can
- 8:28also stream it on Sling TV, Fubo TV, Plex, YouTube Prime time,
- 8:32YouTube TV Premium Prime or Pluto, or you can rent it from
- 8:36Google Play or Fandango at home. Society was written by Zeph E
- 8:41Daniel and Rick Fry, directed by Brian Yesna, music by Phil
- 8:46Davies and Mark Ryder, and as it was credited in the opening
- 8:50credits, see realistic makeup effects were done by Screaming
- 8:55Matt. George, I think.
- 8:57This is the first time we've gotten or gotten we've gotten to
- 8:59talk about him on this show, so. Far no.
- 9:03No nightmare. Yep.
- 9:05It's been years, yeah. It's been a long.
- 9:07It's been a while and we're talking about him with his
- 9:14filmmaking soul mate, Brian Yezna.
- 9:16I just, they're such a dream team and I'm sure I'll talk
- 9:20about that when we get to our goods about the movie.
- 9:23Do you have anything on the in the the fun facts?
- 9:27I don't know. OK 'cause.
- 9:31If it's what you're referring to or not.
- 9:33Oh, I was just, I thought it was interesting how they got
- 9:35connected. Oh yeah, Where somebody was just
- 9:37like, hey, this guy really likes to do some realistic makeup.
- 9:40Yeah, it was Japanese producers. Like they all.
- 9:42Were finest in the movie and they're like hey man you need to
- 9:45get this guy this guy's an amazing effects artist over here
- 9:47in Japan we need to get him over there in the United states I'm.
- 9:50So glad they. Didn't do.
- 9:51And I was like, fuck yeah. And then we had a nice little
- 9:54pairing and yes, God, history was made.
- 9:57OK, starring Billy Warlock as Bill Whitney, Evan Richards as
- 10:02Milo, Devin Devasquez as Clarissa, Ben Slack as Doctor
- 10:06Cleveland, Charles Lucia as Jim Whitney, Concetta Dagnis as Nan
- 10:11Whitney, Patrice Jennings as Jenny Whitney, Brian Bramer as
- 10:15Martin Petrie, Yay, Ben Myerson as Ted Ferguson, Heidi Kozak
- 10:21Haddad as Shauna, and David Wiley as Judge Carter I.
- 10:25Always like it when we have Heidi on these movies.
- 10:27I know like she has like A to. Jump in randomly.
- 10:31Well, she's she kind of encapsulates the feel of the 80s
- 10:35horror movies that I love because she said all of those
- 10:38that I love. She and then she was gone.
- 10:40She could literally just be like a mascot for that era.
- 10:44She just retired and just went off and did like normal wife
- 10:47shit. Yeah, but you know, she like she
- 10:49left her stamp. She did and she's been been very
- 10:54like monumental to us in our movie watching anytime tenure.
- 10:58Anytime I look at her all I can hear is that line from slumber
- 11:03party massacre to where she's like I know what I can't
- 11:07remember to make her just saying like I know what she's getting
- 11:09for her birthday, a boyfriend. A boyfriend?
- 11:13Yeah, it's. So funny, I love her.
- 11:16Yeah. All right, Travis, it's time for
- 11:18our favorite game budget. Oh bug, Ted.
- 11:24Well, I feel like this is definitely going to be a bug,
- 11:26Ted. This is his first directed
- 11:28movie. Yes, they're not going to hand
- 11:29this guy a shit ton of money. They handed him a mad screaming,
- 11:32screaming mad George and they're like a mad, screaming mad
- 11:35George. Yeah.
- 11:37Yeah, yes, you are correct, $2,000,000 budget.
- 11:41Wow, that's that's not too bad, OK.
- 11:44I do not have any box office information as kind of
- 11:47previously suggested. Yeah, it seemed, well, we know
- 11:50that it bombed over here in the United States.
- 11:54It did well in the the UK and Italy and Spain it seemed to do
- 11:59a quiche. But over here I think it was
- 12:02more of a cult hit. Well, the good news is but
- 12:06nowadays on IMDb. It's got a score of 6. .5 out of
- 12:1010. That's really good.
- 12:11I'm really pleased that it has that score.
- 12:14That's shocking, yeah. OK I have 3 movies also from
- 12:191989 and I chose a theme of movies that we unironically love
- 12:25despite what society tells us we should feel about them.
- 12:30That's perfect, man. All right.
- 12:32Cool. OK.
- 12:32What What do you got? What?
- 12:33What are the three? The first one's things.
- 12:38Dude, even people in the horror community don't want us to like
- 12:42that movie. Don't.
- 12:42Believe that we should enjoy things and I'm like no but it's
- 12:46so fun I'm. Looking at our Iron Mutant award
- 12:49over. Here.
- 12:50They're like you survived. Watching the things like this is
- 12:53an accomplishment. Like we had a fun time with
- 12:56that. We have watched it multiple
- 12:58times since then. We've recommended it to friends.
- 13:03Got. It that was a mistake maybe.
- 13:06No SO. One of the ones I recommended
- 13:08to, I was like, you're definitely going to like this.
- 13:10And I did get an angry text message from her, but it wasn't
- 13:13because of the movie itself. It was because she was watching
- 13:15it with her younger sister. And she was like, you couldn't
- 13:16have warned me that there's full frontal nudity in the 1st 30
- 13:19seconds. It's.
- 13:19A fucking horror movie. And I was like, I'm going to be
- 13:22honest, I forgot. Well, it's a horror movie.
- 13:24I think you should expect that in a good amount of them,
- 13:27especially the older ones. So in a first on this show, I
- 13:31don't have an exact release date.
- 13:33I just have month and year which is September 1989.
- 13:36That's. Fitting for this movie.
- 13:38Yeah. It has a budget of 3000 Canadian
- 13:43no worldwide gross in an IMDb score of 2.9 out of 10.
- 13:49Can we please talk about this movie sometime on the show?
- 13:52Like, I don't, I don't know how we'll have we're, we're
- 13:56struggling with society. I don't know how we'll be able
- 13:58to handle things. You know, all we'll have to do
- 14:03is just party, party. Party, Yeah.
- 14:07Oh man. OK.
- 14:08Second wait. What was the IMDb again?
- 14:102.9. Oh.
- 14:13Oh yeah. That's that's right.
- 14:15Is that? Higher or lower than Doom
- 14:17Asylum? That is way lower.
- 14:20Doom Asylum is like four or something.
- 14:22It's like it's not even that bad, I don't think.
- 14:25No dude, they're not even in the same ballpark.
- 14:28Come on. Like in terms of quality of
- 14:31movie Doom Asylum. Yeah, Doom Asylum is 4.6.
- 14:34Yeah, no, there's no fucking way that it's going to be that low.
- 14:38God Things is really one of the trashiest movies I've ever seen,
- 14:42but God I love it because of that.
- 14:44OK, the second one, Halloween 5. Oh God, yes, I will love that
- 14:51movie. So I think people are.
- 14:53Cosplaying is that this year for.
- 14:55We are. I'm gonna go as Loomis with his
- 14:58ever shifting scars. And I'm going as.
- 15:02Tina. Yeah, can't wait.
- 15:05I think people are starting to shift on that. 1.
- 15:07We saw a couple of people like with posters and stuff getting
- 15:10them signed last year. Yeah, well, not only that, I
- 15:12think I've seen like some online discussion people be like, you
- 15:14know, it's not that bad. Yeah, it's actually a really fun
- 15:16movie. It's one of my favorite
- 15:18Halloween movies and like, I'm like a straight up OG with the
- 15:21Halloween movies. Yeah.
- 15:22Like yeah, I like. It it fucking goes, goes good.
- 15:26So that released October 13th 1989 on a budget of $5,000,000
- 15:31and it made a gross of $11.6 million.
- 15:34It has a very rude IMDb score of 4.9 out of 10.
- 15:37Oh, harsh. Which part of me wants to like,
- 15:41go back and listen to our episode on Halloween 5 and see
- 15:43if that's gone up or down any since then?
- 15:46I recommend. That's one of my favorite
- 15:48episodes that we've done. It's a fun time.
- 15:50It's a fun episode. I've listened to it and I'm
- 15:52like, I'm like, that holds up. Like we, we've had some rough
- 15:55episodes in our earlier days, but that's one that like really
- 15:58held up. I thought it was a good
- 16:00discussion. And then finally, Friday the
- 16:0413th party, Jason takes Manhattan.
- 16:07Yeah. Once again, I find myself
- 16:10wrapping this while we're on the show talking about this.
- 16:13Maybe it's it's a fun, it makes no goddamn sense, but it doesn't
- 16:18have to because it's Friday the 13th.
- 16:20We've got a zombie baby boy who built a shack in the woods and
- 16:25ignored his mother who just wanted to avenge his death like
- 16:27nothing about the franchise made sense from the very beginning.
- 16:30So just people that get upset about it are overthinking it.
- 16:33I think a lot of people are just upset that we don't get a lot in
- 16:35New York. Despite the name of the title.
- 16:39I think it's a fair criticism, but Despite that, I think it's a
- 16:42really fun movie still. And the whole sequence in New
- 16:46York is fine. Yeah, it's great and you get a
- 16:48decent amount of it, but you don't get like you don't get in
- 16:52roaming Manhattan the entire movie here's.
- 16:54The thing we could have Jason at sea or Jason takes Manhattan.
- 17:00Which one do you think's the one that's gonna draw people in?
- 17:04Plus, we know that everybody knew they were shooting in
- 17:07Manhattan cuz Kane Hotter has told this story several times
- 17:10about everybody being there in Times Square when they were
- 17:13shooting. I think they only did that in
- 17:15Manhattan when they did that part.
- 17:17I think they did the rest in Canada.
- 17:19Yeah, but I'm just saying like they knew it was a thing.
- 17:22Yeah, yeah. So I think they made the right
- 17:25call. Yeah, for sure.
- 17:26That's a fun movie. I like it.
- 17:28It's a good time. It's such a good time one.
- 17:30Of my favorite kills in him when the dude is boxing him on the
- 17:33roof and then he just like gets his head punched off.
- 17:35That's so amazing. One of our favorite bits that we
- 17:38still reference in our personal lives, like regularly, which is
- 17:43that you can't, yeah, you can't take the boot the boat away from
- 17:47the dock without toot Tooting. You got a toot too?
- 17:49It's. Basic.
- 17:50I mean, it's just common courtesy.
- 17:52Anyway, Jason takes mine hat and released July 28th 1989 on a
- 17:57budget of $5,000,000 and it made a gross of $14.3 million.
- 18:01It has a 4.24. What the fuck is that number?
- 18:07Oh it has a 4.5 out of 10 on IMDb.
- 18:11Yeah, wow. They you know what?
- 18:14You're right. All of those are really low
- 18:16rated. They all popped up as soon as I
- 18:20Googled 1989 horror movies and I was like, you know.
- 18:23What yes, things did immediately.
- 18:25Things was the. 1st. One no shit.
- 18:27And I think that's partially because my Google algorithm.
- 18:31Oh, they know, right? You trash monster.
- 18:34Here. You go.
- 18:35Here you go, here's your trashy shitty horror movies out front
- 18:38here. Oh, you're a tailspin, OK.
- 18:43OK, I got a lot of tag lines. Yeah.
- 18:46OK, SO2 poster versions. I know the first one, the bottom
- 18:50part. Well, there's the top part that
- 18:53goes with it. And they're very.
- 18:54Clearly good. With each other.
- 18:56I read the bottom part. The rich is always the rich have
- 19:00always fed off the poor. This time it's for real.
- 19:04Oh. No, I was.
- 19:05That's the other poster then that I saw.
- 19:07Society. Oh, well then we've seen
- 19:10multiple different Yeah posters. This one's a society.
- 19:15It's all about fitting in. That works on a few levels.
- 19:18I enjoy that. I like that, yeah.
- 19:21In Beverly Hills, what you fear is only the beginning.
- 19:26You are what they eat. That's it.
- 19:28You are what they eat. You know, if you don't belong,
- 19:32they'll eat you alive. I like that because Beverly
- 19:36Hills as a poor feels very intimidating to think about
- 19:40being in SO. Yeah.
- 19:44It's not what you think it is, which is just a good way to
- 19:49describe this movie to somebody who has never seen it.
- 19:52I like it. Yeah.
- 19:53Yeah, that is a good one. And like you're watching it with
- 19:55a friend, like a totally unsuspecting friend for the
- 19:58first time. And you see the opening credits
- 20:00with the shunting in the background.
- 20:01They're like, what's happening there?
- 20:03And you're like just you don't, you don't know.
- 20:05You. You don't.
- 20:06It's not what you think it is. You could just say like, oh, it
- 20:08never comes back up, don't worry about it.
- 20:12They just thought it would really like keep people in the
- 20:14seats for a minute. Don't really.
- 20:15You don't have to worry. About it.
- 20:18It doesn't matter of good breeding, really.
- 20:21Whoa. These are good tag lines.
- 20:24All of these. Are they really are I credit
- 20:26that to Brian, yes, now, well. We we've got our word cut out
- 20:29for us if we're going to come up with something.
- 20:31I know we've got, yeah, there's a lot of good tag lines right
- 20:36there. So I'm very pleased with that.
- 20:38Me too, that's always good. So I've got some fun facts, OK?
- 20:43And these mostly came from our special features with Brian
- 20:46Yezna, who despite making movies like this and Bride of
- 20:50Reanimator and the Dentist one and two, looks like your
- 20:55favorite grandpa, you know, like.
- 20:58No shit, man. I looked at him and I was
- 21:00thinking to myself, I look at this guy all the time at the
- 21:04grocery store and I would never think that this kind of guy
- 21:07right here would be this type of dude.
- 21:09I know he's also a producer on Silent Night Daily Night 4 cause
- 21:13Brian talked about working with him again I.
- 21:15Remember, Brian said he was basically the director.
- 21:17That's what he told us. He's like, yeah, he really just
- 21:20took control of that whole movie.
- 21:21Yeah, he said. He's a very hands on kind of
- 21:23person in general anyway, so it sounds like maybe directing
- 21:26suits him, which kind of fits in with what he was saying.
- 21:28So up until this point, he'd been a producer and he said one
- 21:31of the things about being a producer is you can have like an
- 21:34idea and you can get secure all the funding and you can make all
- 21:37of the things happen. But if you have a shit director,
- 21:40I'm paraphrasing here, but essentially what he said is if
- 21:43you have a shit director, the movie's not gonna happen.
- 21:45Yeah, I mean for him, a lot of people just bailed on it like
- 21:49this, from the sounds of it. Yeah, so he's already working on
- 21:53a project with Dan O'bannon called the man that ended up not
- 21:57going through. So that was always kind of a
- 21:58bummer to him. And then, you know, he's got
- 22:02this in the back of his mind. He's got all of these things he
- 22:04wants to do in the back of his mind.
- 22:06He kind of wants to start directing so that way he can
- 22:08have that element of control over making sure his projects
- 22:12reach through to the end. So he decides he wants to start
- 22:17directing. And what he's been told is that
- 22:20it it's good to maybe have a have some backup options 'cause
- 22:26he heard in a joke that every director's first movie is also
- 22:30his last movie. I'm butchering that.
- 22:32It was something about like. Yeah, he says somebody like one
- 22:35of his old friends said first time directors always make 2
- 22:39movies, their first movie and their last movie.
- 22:41There we go. Yeah.
- 22:42So he's like he, he negotiated because he he worked with Stuart
- 22:46Gordon on The Reanimator. Yes.
- 22:50He did a story for that. And he had the exclusive rights
- 22:53to that. So that also meant that he had
- 22:55the exclusive rights to the sequel.
- 22:57So what he did was he leveraged that so that way he could direct
- 23:00to the sequel and he could also he leveraged it for A2 movie
- 23:04deal. So that sequel that he knew was
- 23:06gonna be successful. And then society, which he
- 23:09picked the script because when he saw it, it was originally
- 23:11just for a blood cult. And it reminded him of that
- 23:14project with Dan O'bannon, the man that they'd worked on that
- 23:17just didn't fall follow through the way you know, they wanted it
- 23:21to. And so he worked with the
- 23:23writers and screaming man George, as we already discussed,
- 23:26developing it, making it a little bit weirder and kind of
- 23:34turning it into. He said he took the approach of
- 23:37like, what is the climax in a movie that I would want to see
- 23:41that I haven't seen before? Yeah.
- 23:43Which brings us to the shunting. Yeah, he was.
- 23:47I was really interested in getting the insight from him on
- 23:49this. He, he said he's like a huge
- 23:52special effects dude, which. Yes.
- 23:54And he loves to see that stuff play out on film.
- 23:56And then when he read the blood cult thing, he's like, well,
- 23:58that's kind of like a let down for a finale.
- 24:00So he's like, I just there was like a movie.
- 24:03Do you have it written down? There, yes, it was Doctor X, and
- 24:06they have the substance called Neo Flash.
- 24:08And he said that he saw it and he would have nightmares of
- 24:10people just kind of like, melting together.
- 24:12And he said he kind of combined that with, like, werewolves and
- 24:16other transformation horror movies and then also like, Dolly
- 24:20paintings, which are very surrealistic and screaming.
- 24:22Matt George was like, fuck yeah, can we start yesterday?
- 24:25Yeah. It's, it's a perfect combination
- 24:27there. Yeah.
- 24:29Like I. I appreciate him punching that
- 24:31up because like honestly if it was just a blood cult thing I
- 24:35think it like. It would have been a fine.
- 24:37Movie, But I don't think it would have had that lasting
- 24:40effect that you get from watching The Shunting at the
- 24:43end, because it really just makes such an impact.
- 24:46Yes, and we have seen that kind of referenced in other movies.
- 24:49I think most recently an Evil Dead rise.
- 24:52That was for sure. There's no way you can see that.
- 24:55And if, if you, if you know, you know kind of thing, there's I, I
- 24:59think all of our friends that we went with, we were all like
- 25:01shunting, shunting, shunting. I feel like that type of stuff,
- 25:06and this kind of goes along with Screaming Matt George, but I
- 25:10feel like that's like a common thing in Asian horror,
- 25:13especially video games. You see a lot of like people
- 25:17just like melded together like that type deals.
- 25:20Yeah, I've seen that a while, especially in video games.
- 25:23I think like, Fuck Evil Within would probably be one that I
- 25:27could think of, yeah. We also have a joke in the
- 25:33Futurama maybe where they go into the D&D game.
- 25:36Yeah. But before that they have like
- 25:38the demolition Derby and the chicks are singing the national
- 25:41anthem and they're like been combined due to a horrible
- 25:47accident. They're like.
- 25:48We're in pain. Yeah.
- 25:50So yeah, and I could definitely see Matt Groening being a fan of
- 25:55societies. Dude, I could too.
- 25:57Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, All in all, like just
- 26:03such a weird movie and such like a love letter to horror and
- 26:08things that are not seen very often or are considered taboo.
- 26:13I mean, he even touched kind of on the incest thing with it
- 26:16'cause it has kind of a big plot point in the movie.
- 26:19And he was like, you know, it is taboo.
- 26:22It's just written about extensively as one of the
- 26:26biggest taboos in horror films, and so he included that amidst
- 26:30all of this other body horror and psychological horror and
- 26:34sociological horror that he had going on with this movie.
- 26:38He was saying, like a lot of people apparently their
- 26:40takeaways that it's kind of like an like under the sheets of like
- 26:46a lot of horror movies or whatever.
- 26:47Like it's kind of like they're lying underneath the themes and
- 26:52he's like, let's just fucking embrace it.
- 26:53Like it's just like full on. Like, I mean, it's very much a
- 26:55genre film type deal. Also, we were shocked to find
- 26:59out that he worked on Honey I Shrunk the Kiss.
- 27:01Yeah. Which is an amazing thing.
- 27:04Like I'm like what the fuck? That guy made a children's
- 27:07movie. I'm kind of still sitting with
- 27:09that information. Stewart Gordon was also a part
- 27:12of it. I looked it up, they both did
- 27:14the story for this movie. Isn't that insane?
- 27:18So I've just put I've been watching Brian Yasun my entire
- 27:21life. That was his start.
- 27:22Wild. That was wild to think.
- 27:25He started with that fucking shit, I think, and then they
- 27:28went on to like a reanimator. Like man, what a career
- 27:32trajectory that is right there. All right, that's what I've got.
- 27:39OK? I think we're ready to talk
- 27:42about our good, bad, ugly and absurd.
- 27:43OK. Do I get to kick it off?
- 27:46You do get to kick it off because I've just done a lot of
- 27:48talking. OK, All right.
- 27:50So starting off the good, I think that this movie does a
- 27:53really good job of right off the bat, you kind of feel unsettled
- 27:58with the water of the dialogue that goes on because you can
- 28:01feel that there's not something quite right with this family
- 28:04here. And you get that paranoia that
- 28:08Bill is experiencing right from the get go.
- 28:10Like you can kind of understand why things aren't really adding
- 28:14up and everybody in his wife is just telling him, no, man, it's
- 28:17fine. Like, you know, this is just how
- 28:19everything is. You're totally, you're
- 28:20overreacting. Like, but then you see the
- 28:23parents interacting and you're like, that felt a little bit
- 28:25weird. I, you know, like I'm, there's
- 28:27something that's just going off in my brain that's making me
- 28:30think that's not natural. I made a joke part way through
- 28:33because we we wrote our own drinking game for this.
- 28:37And one of them is anytime Bill is gaslit.
- 28:39Yeah, and I made the joke like guess like gatekeep girl boss.
- 28:43And that honestly isn't far off from how a lot of them treat
- 28:47this movie. Yeah, it's really nice.
- 28:50Yeah. I think the surreal horror in
- 28:52this movie is some of the finest surreal horror like out there.
- 28:56Because like it, it starts. Try too hard.
- 28:59With it, like they just, it just feels natural, like it blends in
- 29:03so well with reality. Yeah, that's what I was gonna
- 29:06say. It starts off naturally.
- 29:07Like, I mean, you can get these little things, like, wow,
- 29:09there's something not quite right here.
- 29:11But then the movie slowly devolves into this weird fucking
- 29:15thing and by the time you get to the final act it just becomes
- 29:19like, what the fuck am I watching right now?
- 29:21By the time you get into the final act, you're like, well, we
- 29:24knew we were gearing up for something.
- 29:26I did, but you don't know. Yeah.
- 29:29And like all elements of the movie, you get like, people,
- 29:33like the acting, people are starting to act a little bit
- 29:35more over the top. You get the music.
- 29:37It's starting to get a little bit like carnival, like weird,
- 29:40freaky, and then you get the screaming Mad George effects
- 29:44that are going on during all of the shunting and shit and like
- 29:47it just becomes this whole experience and it's just such.
- 29:52And I, I love it too 'cause I'm we all know I'm a person that
- 29:55loves a practical effect, right? Obviously we both are, but where
- 30:00I play around with them and stuff.
- 30:02And you would think that I would be upset at seeing hardly none
- 30:06of it up until this point they completely.
- 30:09Back. Load that shit.
- 30:12They do all all of the. Time and effort clearly went
- 30:14into that. Yeah, in the best.
- 30:16Like it doesn't feel like a cop out in any way, shape or form.
- 30:19You get like this build up and then it's just a beautiful
- 30:21catharsis. That's what I think works for it
- 30:24because it is a build up and it all is like pay off basically.
- 30:29See, this is what I'm gonna use as reference when people are
- 30:34upset that I don't like the invitation.
- 30:38We've never liked the invitation.
- 30:40You and I both have agreed on that because it's got this build
- 30:43up and that pay off at the end. Like, oh, it's a mass
- 30:46conspiracy. Doesn't do it for me.
- 30:48You know what does it for me? The mother fucking shunting.
- 30:51And before you say anything, this movie did not ruin the
- 30:54invitation for me. I saw the invitation before I
- 30:56ever saw society. So.
- 30:58Yeah, no, I wouldn't even like I get what you're saying, but like
- 31:00I wouldn't even put them in like the same.
- 31:02No, I'm just saying like that's what I'm going to use is like a
- 31:05counterpoint next time somebody. Oh no.
- 31:07I yeah, you get this great build up and then it's like.
- 31:10I mean, that's kind of like one of my next points here is like,
- 31:13I mean, I think the commentary is awesome.
- 31:15Like it's great. It does a good job of getting
- 31:17this message across without being super heavy-handed.
- 31:20And then it also like, it doesn't come across as
- 31:23pretentious because I feel like something like this is something
- 31:25that you could be very like high on yourself.
- 31:28With Yeah. It'd be really easy to, but it
- 31:31doesn't take itself seriously enough for it to ever feel like
- 31:34that. Like it's, it's so silly in its
- 31:37design and execution and everything that you just have
- 31:41fun, but you get the message because you straight up say it.
- 31:44Yeah, Turd Ferguson at one point literally says the rich have
- 31:49always sucked off low class shit like you.
- 31:51I mean. It's just out there, but it's
- 31:53such an absurd movie. The entire time.
- 31:55You're not like, I can't take this seriously.
- 31:58Butt head, yeah. How can you have this kind of a
- 32:01movie and then also make a butt head joke like that and it just
- 32:05work and it doesn't feel dissonant?
- 32:07God damn it, that's amazing. It really, yeah.
- 32:10And that's one of the best payouts ever right there.
- 32:13Like right there you lay the ground like.
- 32:14You're a butt. Head and then like 40 minutes
- 32:17later it's like, hey, I guess I really.
- 32:18Am a butt head ha ha. And he like does the fart noises
- 32:22with his mouth. It's like, God is so stupid.
- 32:25So yeah, that's pretty much most of my good there.
- 32:28So what do you have to? Say the beautiful combination of
- 32:33Brian Yesna and screaming bad George.
- 32:35You both have such dedication to their craft and like watching
- 32:39Brian Yesna and I'm sorry, I'm doing the full name and it's
- 32:42because we're like like we're friends with Brian Bremer, who's
- 32:47also in this movie. So like it's and we just will
- 32:50like talk about Brian as Brian. So like it's.
- 32:54It's weird we have to do the full name for this.
- 32:57Yeah, they are just, he talks about in the special features
- 33:02about how, like, it's his directorial debut and he feels
- 33:05like it's very obvious. But I think he's just so
- 33:08dedicated to what he's doing. And I think Screaming Matt
- 33:12George is also so dedicated to what he's doing.
- 33:14And they're those kinds of creatives that have like, a
- 33:16specific vision and they follow through with it even if it
- 33:19doesn't make sense. Anyone else and you feel that in
- 33:22the final product? And I get that with society, you
- 33:26know what I mean? Yeah, it comes through and I
- 33:29think it's just like, love it or hate it, it's art.
- 33:33It is, yeah, for sure. Visually.
- 33:35And like, dramatically. Yes, we've already talked about
- 33:41the humor in this and they don't linger on it too much, even like
- 33:44the butt head thing, like it's not pounded into the ground.
- 33:47We get the rule of three with it.
- 33:49Yeah, you really do. Yeah.
- 33:50And it's great. We've got all of Clarissa's
- 33:53lines are just so weird and Devin just delivers them so
- 34:00matter of factly. Like you could think that maybe
- 34:03she almost wrote her own dialogue is how like Blasi, she
- 34:06delivers it like it's her actual way of speaking.
- 34:09And I think it's great because it fits her character so well,
- 34:11too. I'm kind of surprised with her
- 34:12honestly. I think she was like a Playboy
- 34:15Bunny or something like. That.
- 34:16Oh, really? Yeah, I remember in the Joe Bob
- 34:19episode they discussed that. Yeah, it's been a while since
- 34:22we've watched the Joe Bob version for this.
- 34:24Yeah, but I, I remember, yeah, like, it's pretty good acting
- 34:28for her. She did a really good job in
- 34:29this. And I, I think there's like, it
- 34:32makes me so sad too, like watching this because this is
- 34:36one of those things that like, I hate movies that try and like
- 34:42play up mental illness, like, oh, is it all in their head or
- 34:46is it real? And I think this does it in a
- 34:48way that, like you feel so sympathetic for Bill cuz like
- 34:54he's your protagonist and you're with him and it's like you can
- 34:57see him being gaslit in that way.
- 35:00And I think it just, it really reminds me of like folks with
- 35:04like paranoid schizophrenia who are literally afraid of the
- 35:07people around them, like up to their family.
- 35:10They're afraid of the food they eat.
- 35:11Like it's heartbreaking. And seeing him go through that
- 35:15is so heartbreaking. And it does it in a way that's
- 35:17not like stigmatizing towards mental illness.
- 35:20So yeah, I just, I have so much and every time I watch this
- 35:24movie I feel like I catch a different detail and I feel like
- 35:26the story state, like even though you get this tension
- 35:29building and everything and it feels like a big mystery.
- 35:31It's almost like a Jalo where it's all like building up
- 35:33towards something. And I like it.
- 35:35I have a fun time watching it. Whole mystery.
- 35:37Yeah, and every time watching it feels like the first time in a
- 35:41way. It's like.
- 35:42It's because we take long. Breaks.
- 35:44We do take long breaks with it. We don't Overwatch this.
- 35:47One yeah, yeah. It's it's you.
- 35:49Savor you savor it, savor the flavor you.
- 35:52Gotta do it when the mood strikes.
- 35:53Sometimes you just seen some absurd horror, and that's
- 35:55exactly what you get with this right here, Yes.
- 35:58OK, All right. So what do you think is bad
- 36:00about this movie, Travis? Well, there's some bad things.
- 36:03Like I feel like some things just kind of happened without
- 36:06any like, real explanation. Like, I mean, we get some like
- 36:09scenes where like he'll go to a house and he'll have like the
- 36:14scene will last five seconds and then it'll cut to the next
- 36:16location. Like, you know, like some of the
- 36:18stuff it doesn't necessarily feel like it's quite needed.
- 36:22It just kind of adds a little bit of jank to the movie there.
- 36:26But you know, I think overall I think it can kind of work to the
- 36:30vibe of the movie, like to the feel of it, because it's kind of
- 36:33keeping you off like on your toes there a little bit.
- 36:36But at the same time, like you still got to look at it as like
- 36:39a movie and think like, man, like, did we need this right
- 36:43here? And then you also have the
- 36:44things with fuck, what's her name, Chorus's mom that never
- 36:52really explanation. And it was really interesting
- 36:55hearing him explain that because he was talking about he doesn't
- 36:57even know what the whole thing with her and the hair was.
- 37:00And he's like, I mean, I like his approach because he said I'm
- 37:04very much like go with the IT was like the inspiration.
- 37:09And then you'll find the explanation afterwards.
- 37:12But apparently they went with the inspiration with that one
- 37:14and they never found an explanation.
- 37:16I'm gonna say I feel like her entire character was just
- 37:20leading up to a joke, which was at the end that the chief of
- 37:23police has a toupee and she's like pissed off that she can't
- 37:26pull off and eat his hair because it's not real.
- 37:28I feel like there's got to be something in there though,
- 37:31because she is part of that class, right?
- 37:33Yeah, she has to be because it's a whole like, they specifically
- 37:37stay. Yeah.
- 37:38Yeah. But it seems like Clarissa is in
- 37:40charge in a way. Honestly.
- 37:42Like I kind of get vibes of like loved ones where they where
- 37:47starry eyes has the like they boiled her brain a little bit,
- 37:51Yeah. I just had my own little head
- 37:54cannon and I don't know if it makes any sense because
- 37:56obviously these guys are shunting out of their fucking
- 37:58minds, but maybe she like shunted a little bit too much
- 38:02and messed with her. It's like they're meshing with
- 38:06all kinds of things. They're what if they like fucked
- 38:07up her brain? Like maybe somebody reached up a
- 38:09little bit too high inside her and like messed with her brain
- 38:13and maybe something like just kind of fucked with her.
- 38:16I don't know. Yeah, maybe.
- 38:17I kind of like that idea though. We don't have any explanation
- 38:20and I'm just grasping that straws here, but that's the only
- 38:22thing that legitimately makes sense to me.
- 38:24OK, You know, so, but yeah, I mean, we don't get explanation
- 38:29and that's enough for me to count it as a bad.
- 38:31Okay, it's just weird. But then again, it's a surreal
- 38:34movie and I like shit where you don't get explanation and it's
- 38:37just weird for the sake of being.
- 38:38Weird. And I think that's why I kind of
- 38:39let it slide. Yeah, I mean, I love that shit
- 38:42personally. I mean, really, I love that
- 38:44stuff. I love having just weird shit
- 38:46happen on film and not having anything explained about it
- 38:49because it makes me feel unsettled and like.
- 38:53That's what you want from an A surreal horror movie?
- 38:56Yeah, exactly. Unsettled.
- 38:57It's great, but I mean like. It's not OK this It's the
- 39:01difference between like surreal horror versus like what Gabe in
- 39:05the office describes the cinema of the unsettling.
- 39:08Where I love that shit too. That's something so.
- 39:10Good. Like showing you a bunch of
- 39:12gross shit and you're like. Maybe the lack of narrative,
- 39:16Maybe viewers think the director.
- 39:18Was aware that a lack, not even narrative is comforting to the
- 39:22audience. Thank you.
- 39:25No, I OK, yeah, I I kind of disagree because I think she's
- 39:30in the movie just enough to like serve a purpose and have a
- 39:33stupid joke and I'm OK with. It.
- 39:36I'm OK with it too but like I'm I'm going to criticize it where
- 39:39I feel like. It needs to be criticized some
- 39:41ways. Mrs. Carlin is a Deus Ex machina
- 39:44because she attacks Turd Ferguson at one point.
- 39:47So. She pins Billy.
- 39:49No, she does pins. Yeah.
- 39:51Yeah, you're right. Yeah, never mind.
- 39:55My bad. Is kind of similar to what
- 39:57you're saying, where it's like a loose thread, which is a.
- 40:00Heidi Kozak just kind of fucks off halfway through the movie
- 40:04and we don't see her again. She's not really needed after
- 40:07the. Fact.
- 40:07But is she part of society? No, she wants to be, but she
- 40:11can't be and they keep blocking her out because she's not one of
- 40:14them. But her friend is a member of
- 40:16society. Is maybe she being groomed too?
- 40:19Was she though? Like I thought I saw what looked
- 40:22like her but I couldn't tell if. It was.
- 40:23I feel like that was her. I thought it just like they.
- 40:26Lingered on her face just enough that I was like, that definitely
- 40:29looks like her friend. And I'm looking around for Heidi
- 40:32and I'm not seeing her anywhere, which is just a shame.
- 40:34In general, every movie could use more Heidi Kozak.
- 40:37I agree. I think really it could have
- 40:39been, yeah, they could have been the same thing that they were
- 40:41doing with Bill where they were just going to serve her up as a
- 40:43meal one day. Maybe.
- 40:46But I mean, that's her whole point.
- 40:47She wants to be a part of it, but she can't, and she doesn't
- 40:50understand why. Yeah.
- 40:52She's she's so obsessed with social status and like that one
- 40:57right there, that's one where she can't be allowed.
- 41:01Yeah, I just, I don't know, it's, it's her whole character.
- 41:05I feel like it's just kind of a loose thread for me and that
- 41:09that's upsetting. And I'm also gonna say the other
- 41:11bad is the name Ted Ferguson. Because as I've referenced
- 41:14multiple times already, all I can think of is the Saturday
- 41:17Night Live SNL skit Turd Ferguson.
- 41:21And it took everything I mean not to write it in my notes.
- 41:23So if you are a bug titter, budget tier patron and you see
- 41:28Turd Ferguson in my notes, mind your business.
- 41:31I am who I am. I thought it but I I never wrote
- 41:35it. OK, so stuff at your back.
- 41:39Ugly then I guess like, you know, like the whole like all of
- 41:45this type shit. I mean really the whole the
- 41:48whole point of the movie is a very ugly subject.
- 41:51I mean the rich feet off of the poor.
- 41:53Like it's a very real thing that happens and it calls attention
- 41:56to it and it's a really shitty system.
- 42:00Yeah, I it, it really is just like it society and 'cause it is
- 42:07society like, you know, we build our structures and rules and
- 42:12everything in a way that benefits the rich so much more
- 42:14than the poor. And if you try and advocate for
- 42:16the lower class, it's like, well, maybe bootstraps and the.
- 42:24Thank you. Yeah.
- 42:27Like, but it just, I think the, the social commentary is just
- 42:31hit right there on the head. And I think also the whole like.
- 42:34The. Elite just having such a
- 42:37different lifestyle than us. I think there's an interesting
- 42:40commentary there too. I think if you actually rubbed
- 42:44elbows with some of the higher up people and watch this movie,
- 42:46you probably see a lot of similarities.
- 42:48Like, you know what? People really are acting that
- 42:50weird. Yeah, 'cause it's just like
- 42:52you're so distanced from what my reality actually looks like.
- 42:57They were talking. That's just, it's so interesting
- 43:01to see it played out in like a horror way.
- 43:03Like OK, well we know that this is really a thing, but what if
- 43:06what the elite are doing isn't just like being obscenely rich,
- 43:09but it's also like melding into one another in a feeding fuck
- 43:14frenzy? They were talking, I mean like
- 43:16one, there was one dude in Congress or something that got
- 43:20like kicked out or whatever because he like outed that a lot
- 43:24of the Republicans were having like these actual orgies like
- 43:28they have like a. Whole group of people come.
- 43:30Over there and do this shit and I'm like, are they literally
- 43:33shunting over there or like in the movie they're guys like I
- 43:35got a promise in position for you, Ted, over in Washington.
- 43:38And I'd be supportive of the Republicans have an orgies if
- 43:42they just own that shit instead of acting like sex is amoral.
- 43:46It depends on the type of orgy. Well, yeah, if they're having
- 43:49like a shunting type orgy where the like they're unwilling
- 43:52participants, yes. That's what I'm thinking.
- 43:54That's the deal here. I mean, yeah.
- 43:56Listen, I'm assuming even positive intent.
- 43:59Best case scenario you. Should probably not do that.
- 44:01I know I probably shouldn't. Yeah.
- 44:04I mean, I'm generally like, give people the benefit of the doubt,
- 44:07but in this case, no, like it's probably as bad as you.
- 44:10It's probably worse than most people expect in most cases with
- 44:13this type of shit. But yeah, and I think that also
- 44:15kind of ties into the whole intest thing too, which is
- 44:18obviously ugly in and of itself. But then you think about like
- 44:22the royal bloodlines and how there is a lot of like
- 44:25inbreeding that happens to keep those bloodlines, quote UN quote
- 44:28pure. So I think that's really like an
- 44:33interesting parallel as well. Yeah, you also get the scenes of
- 44:36the dad and the mom and Jenny just like in their underwear and
- 44:41he's like massaging her shoulders and shit.
- 44:44If that wasn't their daughter, I would think they're a really
- 44:46wholesome throuple, but because it's their daughter, it gives me
- 44:49major ick. Which is?
- 44:50It's supposed to, but yeah. OK, some absurd stuff.
- 44:55And yes, of course this movie is entirely absurd.
- 44:57So that's that's a cop out. I'm not allowing it this time.
- 45:00Yeah, we can't say the entire movie, and I think we need to
- 45:03just take the shunting off the table as well.
- 45:04Yeah, it's, I didn't include it because it's it's that's low
- 45:07hanging fruit, right? Yes, right here.
- 45:10So First off, I've got the parents discussing the slug crop
- 45:15like at the beginning there with Bill they.
- 45:18Compared one of them to Bill. Yeah, now when?
- 45:21They're different colors. That's Bill, but that's.
- 45:24A real, that's a real thing because we like, we do the show
- 45:26like, oh, that's Scout. That's Zoe.
- 45:28Yeah, all. The.
- 45:29Time, like we'll be in movies and like, we'll see somebody or
- 45:33something acting a certain way and like, one of us will just
- 45:35lean over and be like, Scout, yeah.
- 45:38That was the most loving thing. I think that happened from my
- 45:40family. Oh, that's totally a bill.
- 45:42Yeah. That's what right there.
- 45:43It's just like Bill. Yeah.
- 45:45That was so weird. You can tell that slugs are
- 45:48poor. One of my favorite all time
- 45:50lines in all of cinema. I have some tea here.
- 45:54Would you like cream, sugar or do you want me to pee in it?
- 45:58That's such a fucking weird line, man.
- 46:00I put that, I took a clip of that and I put that on TikTok
- 46:05years ago back in 2021. That shit still gets people like
- 46:08coming. Like what the fuck?
- 46:10My my older sister, who I apologize to at the end of last
- 46:14week's episode when I announced this was the upcoming one, she
- 46:18saw that clip. That was the first time she'd
- 46:20ever seen or heard of this clip of this movie.
- 46:23And she messaged me directly and she was like, I don't know what
- 46:27movie this is but I never want to watch it.
- 46:29She saw that clip. Yeah, She said something to the
- 46:32to the cover of it too, which is just a bunch of people shunting.
- 46:36And she's like, what the hell. Like when?
- 46:38Every time we've literally every time we've ever.
- 46:40Mentioned it, she messages me and she's like I need you to not
- 46:43so I just one less listen this week guaranteed.
- 46:48And my final absurd is that Julius Caesar and Genghis Khan
- 46:52were shunters. It's confirmed.
- 46:55It says that is Canon that they did the shunt back then because
- 47:00that's what the judge talks about.
- 47:01He's like. Yet they they were prominent
- 47:03shunters back then. This is where the bloodlines
- 47:05comes from. OK, that that's my absurd.
- 47:08What what you have? OK, so I've already talked about
- 47:12the Butthead thing. I want to talk about the statue
- 47:15that's in Chinese bathroom. Richard pointed out to you and
- 47:18I've never noticed before, but it's a very large golden statue
- 47:23or bronze statue. It's a figure, and it is a stick
- 47:27man filleting himself. I think the back story behind
- 47:32that is whenever the dad discovered that he can
- 47:36manipulate his body, he's like, hey, honey, watch this.
- 47:38And he just started doing that. And they're like, Oh my God, we
- 47:41need to like, capture this and make it immortals.
- 47:45I also the judge absorbing David's beauty mark.
- 47:50Oh my God, yeah. Like, why are you going on and
- 47:53on about this, you greasy hog? And then it pays off because
- 47:57he's absorbed the beauty mark, which kind of answers some
- 48:00questions that I had as the shunting was going on, which is
- 48:03like, well, do you just absorb traits from each other?
- 48:05And apparently the answer is yes.
- 48:07Well, it makes me wonder how much of them is the original of
- 48:11them and how much is pieces that they have collected and made a
- 48:16part of them? OK, well well now society has
- 48:18become a ship of Theseus situation and I want, I dare a
- 48:25philosophy professor out there to use this as a as a logic
- 48:30problem. I like Brian Yosen was talking
- 48:33about one of the reasons he knew that this was gaining traction
- 48:36overseas is some guy in Italy used this movie as his
- 48:39dissertation, and he wrote it and sent it to him in full
- 48:43Italian. He's like, yeah, I wrote my
- 48:44whole thing on this movie here. Absolutely.
- 48:47I love that. Yeah, it was great.
- 48:48I'm I'm curious to know what it was about exactly.
- 48:52Yeah, So I'd, I'd say like we're just pulling absurds out from,
- 48:58we're finding hay needles in a haystack, you know?
- 49:01It's just home. It is.
- 49:02Yeah. OK, so but.
- 49:04In the best possible fucking way.
- 49:05Let's rate it. OK, this is is it?
- 49:14No, fuck it. I'll give it A10.
- 49:16OK, this is a weird ass movie, but it's like perfect in so many
- 49:20ways that I just can't describe. Well, I did.
- 49:24I actually just did. So you've heard of all of the
- 49:28reasons why I think that this may be a perfect movie.
- 49:30It's just such a weird ass movie, but it hits so hard.
- 49:33It's so good. For me this is an easy 9.
- 49:38Perhaps you will be able to talk me up to 10.
- 49:40OK before the end of this discussion.
- 49:43It's just there's a couple of, like, lingering plot lines that
- 49:46I want addressed. That's fair.
- 49:48So yeah, like, I want to know what happens to Mrs. Carlyn
- 49:50after she tackles Turd Ferguson. And I want to know what happens
- 49:54with Shauna, AKA Heidi Kozak. And you know what?
- 49:59I want Marty to become the new Turd Ferguson now that he's,
- 50:02like, alive. Ye ish.
- 50:05Yeah, yeah, I guess he is at this stage, this whole thing.
- 50:08So yeah. They're yeah, no, he's there at
- 50:09the shunting. You're right.
- 50:10Yeah. OK.
- 50:12OK. So 9.5 is our starting average.
- 50:15Starting average. OK.
- 50:16So I think we should get into this one.
- 50:18I agree. Let's do it.
- 50:21OK. We start off at a noise house.
- 50:24Yes. And then we see a very sweaty
- 50:27Bill Whitney squelching in. We hear a lot of whispering and
- 50:32giggling and sounds. This is squelching a result of
- 50:35his like sweat that he's just gonna like that's accumulated.
- 50:39At this. Point.
- 50:41In our drinking game that we made is one of the rules is.
- 50:45That those people are sweaty. Thank you.
- 50:49It's. Like, 'cause it happens so
- 50:52often, yeah, like. So sweaty.
- 50:55So sweaty and he's very sweaty and he spulches in as a result.
- 51:00I do think it's as a result of this.
- 51:03He sneaks into the kitchen and he grabs a knife, and then all
- 51:07of a sudden, the lights come on, sounds stop, and his mom just
- 51:10goes Bill. And then it.
- 51:12I feel like I said that like April and Jack gets to Bill.
- 51:17Yeah. You feel?
- 51:17Yeah. And it cuts to him in his
- 51:23therapist's office. His therapist is apparently
- 51:25named Doctor Cleveland. And I literally didn't bother
- 51:27that until the credits rolled. Yeah, I didn't either.
- 51:30They never say his name once. They say thanks Cleave at one
- 51:33point and I literally thought it was one of the paramedics was
- 51:35named Cleave so. That's my thought too, yeah.
- 51:39And good thing that this guy's getting therapy because like, he
- 51:43definitely needs it with all the shit going on in his life.
- 51:45But bad thing that his therapist is also I guess like gatekeep
- 51:49girl bossers. Yeah, he's a member of society,
- 51:51but we don't know that. Yet we don't know that.
- 51:53Yet so Bill was there. He's just kind of talked.
- 51:55He says very real therapy things.
- 51:57Yeah, Yeah. Sorry, I didn't.
- 51:59I'm not meaning to cut you off. I'm sorry.
- 52:01It's OK, I'm. Just really excited to talk
- 52:04about this. So yeah, he's there talking to
- 52:06him and then he grabs an apple and he takes a bite off and
- 52:09there's a shit ton of worms inside the apple.
- 52:11So that's how you know things are funky from the get go.
- 52:14And then you cut to a the title card of society and then you get
- 52:18to see like slow motion shunting going on in the background.
- 52:22But you don't really know what's happening.
- 52:24You're just like wow this is weird, but we just saw an apple
- 52:28filled with worms so. It's really weird.
- 52:31Yeah. And like, it is a very good
- 52:35tactic to keep people invested because if you see that under,
- 52:40like, behind the title of society, you're like, OK, what
- 52:43the fuck is this all building up to?
- 52:44Let's find out. Yes, yeah, absolutely.
- 52:48We cut to Bill and Milo playing some basketball out in there.
- 52:53I want to say driveway, but a driveway basketball hoop is for
- 52:57a much, much lower tax bracket. He essentially has his own
- 53:01basketball court out. There no I one of my half court,
- 53:04one of my best friends was a in this he's he was probably a
- 53:08member of society growing up and he had a basketball court in his
- 53:12not court. He had a basketball goal in his
- 53:14driveway. They hear a van approach and
- 53:17it's Jenny, Bill's sister. It's his.
- 53:20It's her ex David Blanchard, and he calls up to let Jenny know
- 53:25he's there and she's like, he can't see me, can you please get
- 53:27rid of him? The dude vanished like he
- 53:29pulled. Up and then they like go.
- 53:31Over there, like, oh, that's Blanchard.
- 53:32They go to his van and he's gone.
- 53:33Like he's already in the. House.
- 53:35And like, silently, apparently. Yeah, exactly, 'cause this dude
- 53:40managed to get all the way up into Jenny's closet and hidden
- 53:43as she like between when she reached out the window to ask
- 53:47Bill to get rid of David and her going back to get dressed.
- 53:51Yeah, so she's up there, she's getting dressed, and then he's
- 53:54like, she catches him peeking in the closet.
- 53:56Which, yeah. Well cuz she So she goes to get
- 53:58her earrings out of their little box and one is missing so she
- 54:01looks down to see if she dropped it somewhere and as she's
- 54:03reaching for it in the closet she sees his face.
- 54:06And I love this cuz this is kind of a subversion of like horror
- 54:10movie tropes cuz a lot of times like an eye peeking out between
- 54:13garments in a closet is meant for the audience but not for
- 54:16like the character that should see it.
- 54:19But she sees it and she screams. And so Bill runs in and he
- 54:22starts like beating up on on Blanchard and he takes them out
- 54:25and he's like. You're out of here, pal.
- 54:27And then Jim and Nan walk in and they're like Bill Jen.
- 54:32Interesting that they call them Bill and Jen and not Billy or
- 54:35Jenny like everyone else, but also not William and Jennifer.
- 54:39Yeah, you know what? That seems more like high class.
- 54:42It's. William and Jennifer, Yeah.
- 54:43It's just like such a weird middle of the ground.
- 54:45Speaking of your best friend, how we refer to him as Billiam.
- 54:50His name? Is Will and his mom.
- 54:52His name is Jennifer. My God, I didn't even make that
- 54:56connection. Yeah, OK.
- 54:58Weird God. I'm leaving that in because
- 55:01that's not enough identifying information I think, for people
- 55:04that don't know. That's true because they don't
- 55:05even call on that. Yeah, Yeah, he does.
- 55:06That's what I mean. Like nobody goes with that.
- 55:08He doesn't even go about that. Okay, so we get a little bit
- 55:12more of that incestuous stuff here.
- 55:15We get Bill. Jen asked Bill to zip her up.
- 55:19So they're a little bit touchy. They're not shy about this
- 55:24stuff. Well, no.
- 55:25Asking somebody to zip you up, that's whatever.
- 55:27But it's the way he kind of touches the damp patch on her.
- 55:31Yeah. Your dad and.
- 55:32It's also the little bulge in her back that starts to happen.
- 55:37Is she getting excited? Yeah, no, ladies get back
- 55:39boners. Didn't you know that?
- 55:40I did not know that. Yeah, maybe you're part of
- 55:43society then, if this is such an obvious thing to you.
- 55:46I mean, Travis, I don't know how you haven't noticed me morphing
- 55:50into you at various times. I've never.
- 55:53You know I've. Never, it's never crossed my
- 55:55mind. So they they kind of have like a
- 56:00little bit of dialogue here. She's really excited.
- 56:02She has her coming out party that's coming out.
- 56:04She's like, it's not that big of a deal.
- 56:06I don't know why people are making such a big deal of it,
- 56:08but whatever. Yeah, and he's got like a debate
- 56:11to be the student body president.
- 56:14And he's also got a basketball game.
- 56:16He's Teen Wolf right now, people.
- 56:18You know, you know he's Michael J Fox in the prime of his.
- 56:22Did you notice his license plates?
- 56:24Whoops, hoops, whoops. That's his identity, man.
- 56:27He's like I'm a Hooper. And we never.
- 56:31I am so disappointed that out of all the things this movie gives
- 56:35us, it's not one weird basketball montage.
- 56:38Cause like when we cut to the school after this scene, we see
- 56:44Heidi Kozak as Shawna cheering. Had a presidential debate, Yeah.
- 56:50And it had a. Debate.
- 56:51So like at first it was like, oh, is this a pep rally?
- 56:54And then it's like, no, she's just introducing Bill to do his
- 56:58debate for the student body president election.
- 57:01And then there's Marty, played by our buddy.
- 57:04Brian Bramer. Yeah, and he's just playing it
- 57:07up as the nerdy guy there today. Very like haughty too.
- 57:11Yeah, very uptight, and they're currently debating about the
- 57:15wardrobe policy at. The dress.
- 57:19Code yeah. Yeah, and.
- 57:21He immediately gets distracted by like some Basic Instinct shit
- 57:25from Clarissa the audience, yeah.
- 57:27Is that they're opening her legs and just like, yeah, here you
- 57:30go. Like is she trying to sabotage
- 57:32it? Yeah, I think so.
- 57:34I. Wonder why?
- 57:36The. Because.
- 57:37She's part of the Society of the Shunt.
- 57:39Yeah, yeah. She's on their team at this
- 57:41point, right? OK, yeah.
- 57:42So yeah, he's over there trying to give the whole debate or the
- 57:46speech. He he sounds back into it and
- 57:48then he like, tries to make a fool out of Marty.
- 57:51Everybody else is eating that shit up.
- 57:52Yeah, it it's very typical. So like, at first you're like,
- 57:58OK, cool, I see how this guy's the protagonist and maybe he's
- 58:00haven't got some kind of a breakdown, something bad's
- 58:03happening in his life. But we don't even know that no
- 58:07yet. So we cut to him.
- 58:09He's going back to his therapist.
- 58:11He's filling himself because he kicked ass in that debate.
- 58:13He's like, yeah, I fucking killed that guy.
- 58:15That guy is going to not have any chance of being president.
- 58:18And then the therapist is like, all right, well, now you're
- 58:20feeling good about yourself. How are you feeling about your
- 58:22family now? And.
- 58:23I just want to say as somebody who's done plenty of therapy in
- 58:26my life, this is so real. The way you like.
- 58:28Talk to a therapist that you've been going to for a while
- 58:32because like, he was just like, guess what?
- 58:34Today was an awesome day, nerd. Like Kick.
- 58:37Some ass today. Yeah.
- 58:39Totally shat on a nerd girl opened her legs in front of me
- 58:42it was awesome my girlfriend cheered for me it's great and
- 58:47he's like all right well so how do you feel about your family
- 58:49he's like well I don't think that they really love me like
- 58:52they do gin I. Sometimes think I'm adopted.
- 58:56Yeah. We just stay out of each other's
- 58:59lives. It's fun.
- 59:01Yeah, they don't approve of me. They don't approve of my
- 59:03friends. Yeah, so.
- 59:06And then the therapist says you're going to get exactly what
- 59:10you deserve. And Bill goes a what?
- 59:13Now he goes, no, I just mean you're gonna be a wonderful
- 59:15contribution to society. And Bill's like, well, that's a
- 59:18weird way to word it, but I'm not gonna think any deeper on
- 59:20that right now 'cause I gotta go to the.
- 59:22Beach. Yeah.
- 59:25So before then he's back at his house, he's gonna go get some
- 59:29sunscreen because they need that to go out to the beach.
- 59:32So he goes into the shower where his sister's showering.
- 59:35Loud is this fucking shower because these rooms are.
- 59:39Her. Room is as big as our entire
- 59:40house. It's gigantic, yeah.
- 59:43And like the shower itself is probably as big as our bathroom.
- 59:46It's huge, yeah. You can hear it from in the hall
- 59:50and he's got. Jen Hey Jenny, I need some
- 59:55sunscreen. And like, it just gets louder.
- 59:59He doesn't, goes in, doesn't. Have any issues walking in on
- 1:00:02his sister in the shower so he walks in there and then he.
- 1:00:05Stares for an uncomfortably long time.
- 1:00:08Well OK, I think it's kind of Fair considering like he takes a
- 1:00:11glimpse and then he sees boobs on her back and then he takes a
- 1:00:17closer look and it's her entire torso completely backwards.
- 1:00:22No, first of all, I wanted to be clear that I would never do this
- 1:00:26in the 1st place. But for a guy that's already in
- 1:00:30there and then he happens to take a glance over there just in
- 1:00:33his position. Like I understand looking for a
- 1:00:36while because what you're looking at isn't exactly
- 1:00:39natural. It's his sister and even if he
- 1:00:43caught a glance, what you immediately do is like, that's
- 1:00:48my sister, not going to look any farther.
- 1:00:50I definitely just saw something weird, my mind playing tricks on
- 1:00:52me. That's immediately what I would
- 1:00:55do. I agree, yeah.
- 1:00:57I mean, I agree that like I in the 1st place, I wouldn't even
- 1:00:59be putting myself in this position so.
- 1:01:02But like, yeah, he's, he's seeing something weird here and
- 1:01:06he like, so. A family with 15 bedrooms in
- 1:01:09their house has got to have more than one bottle of sunscreen,
- 1:01:12right? Like.
- 1:01:13Maybe she hoards it all in her bathroom, You know, I don't
- 1:01:16know. But he goes in there and he is
- 1:01:20so confused by what he's seeing from behind the shower screen
- 1:01:22that he opens up the door and then she's back to normal and
- 1:01:25she's like, Bill, get out of here.
- 1:01:27She's super pissed off. She was completely ready for him
- 1:01:29to open that door too, because when he opens it, she's already
- 1:01:32got the nips and Ariel is covered in a washcloth on her
- 1:01:35vajay and she's like. Bell.
- 1:01:38It was really funny seeing the the thing behind there too,
- 1:01:42because you don't get a queer look at it because it's like,
- 1:01:44what kind of glass is that? They call it.
- 1:01:48I think it's like pebbled glass. Yeah, something like that.
- 1:01:51Like you can't get a queer image, but like, it looks like
- 1:01:54an inflatable doll. Just kind of like just flailing
- 1:01:57about in there. Yeah.
- 1:02:00OK, so yeah, he's freaked out, but whatever, he's going to the
- 1:02:02beach with his girlfriend, so he's having.
- 1:02:03A good day. And his parents are even kind of
- 1:02:05nice to him for a minute. They compare him to a slug in
- 1:02:08like a cute way. And then they're happy that he's
- 1:02:11going to be a class president. And then when he starts to say
- 1:02:13more about his life, they're like, no, that's all the love we
- 1:02:16have for you. Don't care, just feedback by
- 1:02:17curfew. So he goes to his hoop and Jeep
- 1:02:22and there's a Ken in it and he goes, huh, that's weird.
- 1:02:24This is one of my favorite things cuz he picks it up and
- 1:02:28does the dog toy squeak and then he throws it up and then it
- 1:02:31falls back in his Jeep and wherever it lands the sound guy
- 1:02:34did a little extra beeping. It's like really faint.
- 1:02:38I actually imagined the doll Thing was like a wink and a nod
- 1:02:41to Heidi Kozak and the somber party massacre franchise, even
- 1:02:45though the doll Thing was in part one.
- 1:02:47Oh yeah, imagine. It's all interconnected.
- 1:02:49Yeah. So he's making out with her
- 1:02:52hardcore on the beach. And I think they would have done
- 1:02:54more if they were part of society and didn't care about
- 1:02:58people seeing them. Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 1:03:00In that way. And she's like, if you really
- 1:03:03loved me, you'd get us invited to Turd Ferguson's party this
- 1:03:06weekend. Yeah, they're over there, like
- 1:03:08right next to them, almost on the beach.
- 1:03:11As they're having this conversation, two kids do an
- 1:03:15army crawl these. Fucking kids, man.
- 1:03:18They roll up in there and they take the sunscreen and squirt it
- 1:03:20all over Bill and. So much on Shauna.
- 1:03:25Yeah, like half the bottle is on her.
- 1:03:28And so Bill runs after them and tackles them.
- 1:03:31And you know what? Deserved, but they still managed
- 1:03:33to get away and he's still in the sand and when he looks up he
- 1:03:36sees Clarissa, who basically imitates a cumshot.
- 1:03:41Yeah, I was gonna say she does to him what he wants to do to
- 1:03:44her. So yeah, he she cums on him with
- 1:03:48her sunscreen. Or like cumscreen, am I right?
- 1:03:53Sorry, mom. Yeah, and.
- 1:03:55She just kind of walks away and gives it to him and then he
- 1:03:58talks. This is where you can.
- 1:03:59Tell that she's definitely still like playing with him in a
- 1:04:02society way. I think that at this point you
- 1:04:04can tell that she's starting to get a little interest in.
- 1:04:08Them. I think she's a little amused by
- 1:04:09him, but. Yeah.
- 1:04:12And as he gets up and starts to walk towards Turd, he runs into
- 1:04:16a woman who we find out later is Clarissa's mom.
- 1:04:19She's just kind of standing there and giving him like this
- 1:04:21dumbfounded look and she just kind of grunts and then she
- 1:04:25never has any line of dialogue. That's it.
- 1:04:28So there is a character in the Myron Bulletar books by Harlan
- 1:04:34Coben. And this is very much on my mind
- 1:04:35because the newest one just came out.
- 1:04:37So I've been reading it and there's a character named Big
- 1:04:40Cindy. She is wrestling partners with
- 1:04:43one of Myron's best friends, Esperanza, and she's like 65 and
- 1:04:48300 lbs. And she wears, like, insanely
- 1:04:52bright makeup all the time. She's like, people are gonna
- 1:04:55stare at me anyway, so I just wanna give them something to
- 1:04:57stare at, OK? And in my head, I always picture
- 1:05:00a larger version, a larger and Latina version of Mrs. Carlin.
- 1:05:04And that sounds pretty accurate. Yeah, that's the face I picture
- 1:05:07with her. So he goes over there to Ted and
- 1:05:11he's like, hey, man, you hear of anything good going on this
- 1:05:15weekend? And Ted's like, yeah, you know
- 1:05:17what? I don't really think there's
- 1:05:18anything cool going on. And funny enough, we got Marty
- 1:05:20there hanging out with him, too, and his fucking Harvard
- 1:05:23sweatshirt on the beach, which, Brian, what the fuck are you
- 1:05:27doing there, buddy? I.
- 1:05:32Just don't even know. Also like they're like he's
- 1:05:36pissed that Bill won the debate against Marty.
- 1:05:40So I'm like, aren't weird that the nerd is friends with Turd
- 1:05:44Ferguson, but I'm here for like the subversion of trope.
- 1:05:47No. The way I took it, it looked
- 1:05:49like they were using the nerd and being like, hey man, you can
- 1:05:53be a part of our group, but you're going to do what we want
- 1:05:56you to do. If you become present.
- 1:05:59That's how it is. I know that they were using him
- 1:06:01type deal and you know Marty is very much cool with it.
- 1:06:05Yeah, but we do know that Marty's part of society.
- 1:06:07We do now. If for no other reason than the
- 1:06:09fact that he got into Harvard. And a lot of that is like.
- 1:06:13Yeah. I'm I'm rubbing elbows of
- 1:06:14people. Yeah, yeah, look at this.
- 1:06:16And here's The thing is that I forgot that I thought he said
- 1:06:23I'll send you a Telegraph, he said.
- 1:06:25I said I'll send you a telegram if I hear something going on,
- 1:06:29which is important in like a few minutes, but I.
- 1:06:32Was like I was gonna say. 'Cause I thought like he was.
- 1:06:34Being like overly sarcastic, like I'll send you a telegram if
- 1:06:38I hear something going on. And I was thinking Telegraph
- 1:06:40like, and I was like, what a Dick.
- 1:06:45And then later when Jenny's like, you got a telegram from
- 1:06:48Turd Ferguson and I was like, wait, that's a real.
- 1:06:51Yeah. Meanwhile, during all of this he
- 1:06:54looks back over beach towel and Shauna left him.
- 1:06:57Shauna's gonna. Shauna is the most shallow
- 1:07:01girlfriend ever. Like as soon as he is not
- 1:07:05serving anything for their social status, she's like out of
- 1:07:07there. I think they're just a very bad
- 1:07:10match. I.
- 1:07:12Think what I said is very true. She's very shallow.
- 1:07:15Here's the thing though, is that if you think that she's very
- 1:07:18shallow, why is Bill with her? Is it just for her looks and for
- 1:07:21the ability to have sex? Because I'd say that's also
- 1:07:24shallow. Well, we don't really know.
- 1:07:25We don't really explore that too much, but I don't think
- 1:07:28everything about Bill. He does seem to be a guy to to
- 1:07:32like to partake in the sex from what we see later on in the
- 1:07:35film, but I do just from everything else we've seen, we
- 1:07:39get more of them, so it's easier to make that deduction.
- 1:07:42Exactly. But then again, like, I don't
- 1:07:45know, like everything about like Heidi, when confronted later,
- 1:07:48we'll get to it. Hold on, we'll get to.
- 1:07:50It Yeah, we'll just, we need to go and order a word, yeah.
- 1:07:52Yeah. OK.
- 1:07:53So David Blanchard approaches and he says, I've got something
- 1:07:57that you need to hear, but we gotta go to the pier cuz it
- 1:08:00rhymes. And when he pulls her over, he
- 1:08:04pulls him over there. And then we cut real quick to
- 1:08:06Jim Whitney in his parlor, and he's talking to Judge Carter.
- 1:08:11And Jen comes downstairs and Judge congratulates him on her,
- 1:08:16congratulates her on her coming out and says, you know, welcome
- 1:08:20to our newest member of society. And she's like, I think there's
- 1:08:23something in my earring. And it's the same earring that
- 1:08:26she dropped that was like, in the closet earlier.
- 1:08:29And they pull it apart and there is a little something cut back
- 1:08:33to Blanchard talking to Mill and he plays a recording.
- 1:08:39And Bill's mad at first 'cause he's like, what the fuck?
- 1:08:41You're taping my family? That's so messed up, dude.
- 1:08:44He goes no, just so I understand.
- 1:08:47I'd be mad at me too. But seriously, just listen.
- 1:08:50And on the tape he hears yes. Like he hears them talking about
- 1:08:53going to her, coming out party. And then Jim is saying, yes,
- 1:08:58first we dine, then compilation, first with someone your own age
- 1:09:01and then with your mother and me.
- 1:09:03And Bill's, like, you definitely faked this shit.
- 1:09:06Yeah. But like, God damn, it's such a
- 1:09:09weird thing. This is so fucked up.
- 1:09:12And then like the rest of the recording plays and it's just a
- 1:09:15sound of a later, you know, it's the shunting, but it sounds like
- 1:09:19a gross ass orgy that's just going on.
- 1:09:21Yeah, well, I mean, that's what is.
- 1:09:23That's basically the shunting. Yeah.
- 1:09:25But no, like I can't hear the word dine.
- 1:09:28Like since the first time we saw this movie like five years ago
- 1:09:31or whatever, any time I hear the word dine, my head immediately
- 1:09:34goes then copulation. Yeah, you're like, all right,
- 1:09:37we're gonna dine in your mind goes.
- 1:09:39The population and then yeah, so and the judge and Jim see that
- 1:09:46what is in the earring is infected.
- 1:09:47Mike and Jim is like, well, she has been getting stalked by the
- 1:09:51David Blanchard. And I also know he's really good
- 1:09:54at technology. So Bill, despite saying it's
- 1:09:59rigged, is like, I'm taking this tape with me.
- 1:10:01And he bursts into his therapist's home.
- 1:10:05Let's say I understand Doctor Cleveland being like, hey, you
- 1:10:08like literally can't be here right now.
- 1:10:10This is such a problem for me professionally.
- 1:10:12Well. Maybe he does it at his house.
- 1:10:15I feel like that's the thing that happens in horror movies
- 1:10:17for whatever reason. No, I feel like they've
- 1:10:20definitely been showing him doing it like at the school.
- 1:10:22Like very. I love the babysitter.
- 1:10:25OK. Except in the babysitter, it's
- 1:10:27not really a therapist's office. It's just a nurse.
- 1:10:29But. Yeah, I got you.
- 1:10:30Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:10:32And he's like, no, I need you to listen to this tape right now.
- 1:10:35And he's like, well, I can't listen right now.
- 1:10:36We can listen tomorrow in your session.
- 1:10:38He goes, no, I need you to listen to it tonight.
- 1:10:39He goes, well, then you can leave with me.
- 1:10:40He goes, well, I don't wanna do that.
- 1:10:42And he goes, so you still don't trust me, which is like, this is
- 1:10:46like the ultimate kind of gaslighting where it's like not
- 1:10:49just telling you that it's all in your head, but like that
- 1:10:51you're doing something wrong because of what's in your head.
- 1:10:54Mm hmm. Like it's such a manipulative.
- 1:10:58Yeah, the ways of it. You still don't trust me, do
- 1:11:01you? Well, yeah.
- 1:11:03And it works. He ends up handing him over the
- 1:11:05table and he's like, all right, we'll listen to it and then
- 1:11:07we'll meet tomorrow and talk about it.
- 1:11:09So Bill tries to talk to Shauna. This is what I was going to talk
- 1:11:12about. Yes.
- 1:11:13He he tries to talk about his problems and then he's like,
- 1:11:16this is like, shit that's really bothering me right now.
- 1:11:18She's like, OK, but what about Ted Ferguson's party?
- 1:11:21And then he's like, well, as soon as he doesn't have a query
- 1:11:23answer about it, he's like, he gets frustrated and he's like,
- 1:11:25why are you talking about this shit?
- 1:11:27Like this is all you care about? Is this in like our social
- 1:11:30status? And she breaks up with him on
- 1:11:32the spot because of that. Listen and I don't disagree with
- 1:11:35you, I am just saying why was he with her in the 1st place?
- 1:11:39I don't know. I think it was also for shallow
- 1:11:41reasons. I think until he had actual
- 1:11:44problems he was fine with the shallowness.
- 1:11:48Maybe I don't. Know which I think in a way
- 1:11:51makes him shallow, maybe having real problems yes maybe it like
- 1:11:54deepened him some, but like. Look, I'm just calling out
- 1:11:58what's very much visible in the movies.
- 1:11:59So. Am I?
- 1:12:01That's not visible. I think it is visible.
- 1:12:04I it's not that important. Whatever.
- 1:12:06I was just making commentary on what I was observing here.
- 1:12:09So yeah, they break up and she storms off.
- 1:12:13He finds a doll head in his locker, and he's like, well,
- 1:12:16this is annoying on top of everything else.
- 1:12:18He goes to meet with his therapist, who says that taping
- 1:12:22people is kind of hella illegal, especially in California.
- 1:12:25I don't know. But we have, like, a lot of laws
- 1:12:27protecting people's privacy. So he plays the tape.
- 1:12:31And, you know, we cut to the same conversation we heard
- 1:12:35before. So he says, first we'll dine,
- 1:12:38then the introductions, and then you'll be presented.
- 1:12:40He's like, what? No, that's not what this said
- 1:12:43before. And he's like, I hate to give
- 1:12:45you medication. And Bill's like, no, you're not
- 1:12:47giving me this prescription. And instead he takes the phone
- 1:12:50and he calls David Blanchard and he says, can you meet me?
- 1:12:53I need a copy of the tape. Yes, right now.
- 1:12:56OK, cool. I'll meet you at the corner of
- 1:12:58whatever and whatever. I didn't write it down 'cause
- 1:13:00it's not really important. The important thing is that he
- 1:13:02said it out loud where Doctor Cleveland could hear.
- 1:13:04Yes. So he runs out, gets into his
- 1:13:08hoops, and he drives to the meeting place.
- 1:13:12He goes to where he's gonna meet up with Blanchard.
- 1:13:14And when he gets there, he sees Blanchard's van.
- 1:13:17It's just like upside down. And it's a total mess.
- 1:13:20And he sees a bloody sheet being loaded into an ambulance.
- 1:13:23And he goes, is David dead? And the paramedics just don't
- 1:13:26even answer him. And then he sees the, like,
- 1:13:28little electronics case that he had before, upside down on the
- 1:13:32ground, and he goes in to grab the tape recorder.
- 1:13:34And a cop is like, dude, this isn't like a flea market.
- 1:13:37Look, I think. They're very fair here, for
- 1:13:39sure. Yeah, and also like this.
- 1:13:40Is like this is realistic because it does seem very
- 1:13:43callous to just go up to a crash site and start rummaging through
- 1:13:46the logging. And that, I mean, that's
- 1:13:48definitely a dead person in the like covered up there being
- 1:13:53loaded into the ambulance like it's a it's soaked, that sheet
- 1:13:56is soaked with blood. Yeah, it's bad.
- 1:13:58Yeah. And so the cop just basically
- 1:14:02makes him leave. He goes home, and he's trying to
- 1:14:05tell Jenny like, 'cause even though they're broken off, like,
- 1:14:08that was still your boyfriend. And it was implied that they
- 1:14:10were, like, serious for a while. Yeah, right.
- 1:14:12So he's trying to tell her what happened.
- 1:14:14And she's like, no, you got a telegram.
- 1:14:16He goes, no, but I need to talk to you.
- 1:14:17He goes, it's from Ted Ferguson. And he's like, OK, so he opens
- 1:14:22it up and he was invited. I love this because the whole
- 1:14:26invitation is very formal. It's like Theodore.
- 1:14:30Yeah, I love that. Yeah.
- 1:14:32On the at the 18th hour of whatever and then it's signed.
- 1:14:37Ted the Tycoon for you. Is that what it is?
- 1:14:39So I couldn't. I was.
- 1:14:41Signed at the. End.
- 1:14:42I love it. It's so it's so over the top.
- 1:14:45And he's like, OK, so I just need you guys to know.
- 1:14:48And they're like, yeah, we know about the rack.
- 1:14:49And he goes. David's dead.
- 1:14:53They they get the most half hearted thing.
- 1:14:54They're like, Oh yeah, it's so terrible.
- 1:14:56Yeah. Anyways, So what are you gonna
- 1:14:58wear to the thing? And they're like, oh, you mean
- 1:15:02Blanchard's funeral? No, Ted's party.
- 1:15:04And he's like, I'm not even concerned about that right now.
- 1:15:08So he goes to the party and he sees Clarissa and she goes into
- 1:15:14like this. Like, they dance for a little
- 1:15:17bit and talk for a minute. And Shawna's friend who's there
- 1:15:24sees them dancing. And we see her kind of like duck
- 1:15:28out, and we assume that she's gonna go talk.
- 1:15:31To Shawna, if she's there, then that definitely means that she
- 1:15:34is part of society. Well, we don't see that Shawna's
- 1:15:37there. We just see her friend is there.
- 1:15:39No, I know, I'm saying the friend.
- 1:15:40Yeah. Which confirms what you were
- 1:15:42saying. Before OK, OK, yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:45So Milo Bussin kind of cock blocks his buddy Bill and
- 1:15:52insults Clarissa's mom. So she walks into a cabana and
- 1:15:58Bill ends up following her after he gets my load to leave and
- 1:16:02turned Ferguson's in there and he's like so you got my
- 1:16:06invitation. Sorry so last minute.
- 1:16:08And then they kind of fight for a second and then he was like, I
- 1:16:11need to know what's going on with my you and my sister and.
- 1:16:15It's like, I want to know what's going on with Blanchard and my
- 1:16:17sister. And then he's actually like,
- 1:16:19legitimately honest about what happens.
- 1:16:21Like well. 1st we died, then I fucked your sister.
- 1:16:26I love that this. Story changes every time we hear
- 1:16:28it, It's amazing. Yeah, and he's like when
- 1:16:31everybody else got so horny, everybody else fucked her too.
- 1:16:33And then with Blanchard, well, I just caused him to wreck.
- 1:16:36And then, you know, I I'd say I had a pretty busy day today,
- 1:16:39don't you? So this whole thing ends up in a
- 1:16:42fight, he punches Ted and then they all gather Bill here and
- 1:16:47they toss him in the pool. It's a very like Jeff in or what
- 1:16:55is DJ Jazzy Jeff? Yeah, that's DJ.
- 1:16:59Jazz. Jazz.
- 1:17:00Yeah, that's what they call him. Yeah.
- 1:17:01And Fresh Prince, where they like, toss him out.
- 1:17:03Sorry, I said Jeff. And then I was thinking Jazz
- 1:17:06because then I got confused because Jeffrey was there, all
- 1:17:09these things. So I went on a whole loop in my
- 1:17:12head and it didn't make sense out loud.
- 1:17:13It's OK. So he gets thrown in the pool
- 1:17:16and then when he climbs out, Clarissa flirts with him really
- 1:17:20hardcore and then invites him to her house.
- 1:17:24So they're in her room and they're making out in like a hot
- 1:17:28and heavy kind of way, which is surprising because he is wearing
- 1:17:31tighty whities. They start to have sex and in
- 1:17:36the middle of sex he like fills her hand come back from the back
- 1:17:42of her. I was.
- 1:17:43Trying to make sense of this. Note where she called him Lean
- 1:17:46Machine Jelly Bean and she just does it so casually.
- 1:17:50Things like. That is what I was referring to
- 1:17:52before about her dialogue just being so weird but so casual.
- 1:17:56In a weird way, yeah. So that happens.
- 1:17:59He sees the hand and he freaks out, falls out of the bed and
- 1:18:02then he wakes up and her body's in like a bunch of weird.
- 1:18:06Yeah. She she is like pieces of Barbie
- 1:18:09thrown into a pile. Yeah, so and then he sits back
- 1:18:13up and then she's all put back together so they all can put it
- 1:18:17together super fast, apparently. Yeah, meanwhile Shawna and her
- 1:18:20friend are outside of Clarissa's house and they can confirm that
- 1:18:24that's Bill's Jeep. And Shawna is crying and she's
- 1:18:27like, he'll fucking pay for this.
- 1:18:29I don't understand why she's mad she broke up with them.
- 1:18:32Because he like, he's already moved on.
- 1:18:35It's been 8 hours. Yeah, and that's true.
- 1:18:38I get it though. Like I mean.
- 1:18:41I don't. Know that's my whole thing.
- 1:18:42She's the one that called. That's my whole thing with
- 1:18:45Friends and the Ross and Rachel. They were on a break thing.
- 1:18:47Like it doesn't matter if they were technically on a break.
- 1:18:50Like Ross didn't even care enough to like not fuck another
- 1:18:54woman for five hours. Like.
- 1:18:57I get it, but at the same time. I don't think their relationship
- 1:19:01was that deep. I agree with.
- 1:19:03I'm gonna stop analyzing their relationship here.
- 1:19:06Then. No.
- 1:19:07The Ross and Rachel thing that people get so caught up on is
- 1:19:10the thing I'm very passionate about.
- 1:19:12OK, that's. Fine when people like no see,
- 1:19:15but if you look at this line right here where she says take a
- 1:19:17break from us. It's whatever, man.
- 1:19:19I'm. Mixing that.
- 1:19:20We're done with it, OK? So.
- 1:19:24It doesn't matter. So Clarissa gives Bill some tea
- 1:19:27and offers to pee in it and he's like, you're weird.
- 1:19:30Yeah, I, I love how on face he is by this whole thing.
- 1:19:33Like he just kind of like he's like, I've never met anybody
- 1:19:35like you before. You're like I.
- 1:19:37Met her mom. Tom comes in, coughs up some
- 1:19:40hair into her hand and offers it to Bill and he takes it the way
- 1:19:46you would take something gross from a toddler.
- 1:19:49And then when she's not looking, he kind of like drops it and
- 1:19:51wipes his hand off. I kind of get this because like,
- 1:19:53if you're making first impressions with somebody like
- 1:19:55that, especially if it's I don't know what he what his feelings
- 1:19:59are here for Cora. So, but if he wants to like be
- 1:20:01good with her, then like take the hair and just like, you
- 1:20:05know. Move on.
- 1:20:07But she's very much annoyed with her mom, so she kicks her mom
- 1:20:09out. She's like, yeah, she does
- 1:20:10things I don't like. I don't care for it.
- 1:20:13And then Bill was like, all right, I'm getting the fuck out
- 1:20:15of here. Yeah, so the next morning he's
- 1:20:18dressed in his funeral finest, and when he gets into his Jeep,
- 1:20:21he finds a blow up doll with a Barbie in its mouth.
- 1:20:25And he's trying to get it out of his Jeep when Shawna pulls up
- 1:20:29and she's like, oh, that's just great.
- 1:20:33And leaves as though he put the blow up doll in there.
- 1:20:35And he's like, yeah, this is Clarissa.
- 1:20:37I feel like this would have taken 5 seconds to explain but.
- 1:20:40He yeah, this is very classic like ROM com.
- 1:20:43Like no, we let me. Explain.
- 1:20:45Like. Too late, I've already walked
- 1:20:47too far. Yeah, it's like, yeah, it's a
- 1:20:50blow up doll. Like I don't know where the.
- 1:20:51Fuck it came from. Like.
- 1:20:53Nobody puts a blow up doll in their own Jeep.
- 1:20:56No. Like nobody that has ever had a
- 1:20:58girlfriend anyway. Yeah, nobody with self respect
- 1:21:01would do that. So he he's fed up.
- 1:21:04He takes the blow up doll, takes it inside and he wants to
- 1:21:07confront his family about it. And he goes into the parents
- 1:21:10room and he finds mom and dad in the bedroom in their underwear
- 1:21:14with Jenny, who is also in her underwear, getting a shoulder
- 1:21:17massage from her dad. It's so weird.
- 1:21:21And they just like, they gaslight him some more and
- 1:21:23they're like, what are you talking about, man?
- 1:21:25Like, I don't understand why you're so paranoid, Bill.
- 1:21:27Everything's OK. He's like.
- 1:21:29I'm moving out. Yeah, he's and.
- 1:21:31I'm like, no, Bill, don't go. And then this is where we get
- 1:21:35the the little seed plant and like he tells us that he's like
- 1:21:38fuck you butt head. And then he walks out of the
- 1:21:40house. Hold on to that line.
- 1:21:43So at the funeral, Milo says that David doesn't even look
- 1:21:49like himself and he kind of like touches his face and we get a
- 1:21:51literal face crack and he goes, I guess they had to do a lot of
- 1:21:55repair work to make him presentable.
- 1:21:58Yeah. And then he walks away and Marty
- 1:22:01approaches Bill, and he says that they need to talk.
- 1:22:04It's about Bill's family, it's about David Blanchard, It's
- 1:22:07about society. Yeah, so meet at Frankel and
- 1:22:10Cannon. At 9:00 PM.
- 1:22:12Yeah, so at night Bill arrives in his hoops Jeep.
- 1:22:16And Milo is following. Yeah.
- 1:22:19From a safe distance, but also one that Bill totally would have
- 1:22:22noticed if he wasn't so bad at being at a Harvard.
- 1:22:25He was right there. Yeah.
- 1:22:26Yeah. So Bill goes down the hill and I
- 1:22:29don't know why he goes down the hill.
- 1:22:30He's so cute. Bill goes down the hill and he
- 1:22:33finds Marty's car down there. I don't know how the fuck it got
- 1:22:38down there, but it's got its hazards on.
- 1:22:40It's stressed me out imagining like listen I understand Volvos
- 1:22:45are generally hard to destroy but that's literal woods.
- 1:22:49Like all terrain vehicles. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:22:52They're safe Rd. vehicles, but they're not like you said, it's
- 1:22:56not. If it was Bill's Jeep, I could
- 1:22:58understand it being. Yeah, I, I that would make a lot
- 1:23:01more sense. So he inspects it.
- 1:23:03It's kind of giving him weird vibes.
- 1:23:05Opens up the passenger door and Marty kind of falls out there
- 1:23:08with his throats with. Like the lighting in the scene
- 1:23:11is so eerie in like a very beautiful way with like the
- 1:23:14hazards. Going yeah, they did a great job
- 1:23:16with that. Yeah, I was thinking about that
- 1:23:17too when I was watching this. Yeah, it gives that very surreal
- 1:23:19feeling the way you would when you like at night, if you come
- 1:23:21across like the police somewhere, you know, and you see
- 1:23:25the lights flashing and it's different colors.
- 1:23:27And you get this because you've got like the halogen lights at
- 1:23:30the front. But then you've got the red tint
- 1:23:32in the back from the brake lights.
- 1:23:33And it's just like you just get these bursts of color.
- 1:23:36And it just, it adds to like that that human nature thing we
- 1:23:41all have in present day of being like, oh God, this.
- 1:23:44Yeah, you know something? 'S wrong, Yes, exactly.
- 1:23:46And I think that's really well done.
- 1:23:47And then like you said, when he ends up opening up Marty's door
- 1:23:52and he pops out and he's got his throat slit and you're like, Oh,
- 1:23:55no. Yeah, so while he's been doing
- 1:23:59that, Milo up at the top at the road sees somebody run off with
- 1:24:05Marty. And it looks like David
- 1:24:07Blanchard. Yeah, it it looks a lot like
- 1:24:10him. So while all this is going on,
- 1:24:14Bill is just kind of wandering around trying to figure out
- 1:24:17what's going on, and somebody is down there and they push him
- 1:24:20down, so he goes and chases. After.
- 1:24:22Them chases after them, follows them through the woods, finds
- 1:24:25like a sweater in the trees with this geometric type pattern on
- 1:24:30it. And that's important for the
- 1:24:31next two scenes from now. Yeah.
- 1:24:35Hops a fence, finds a house right off front, and then he
- 1:24:38knocks on the door. And then whenever Corset opens
- 1:24:41the door, he's like, who? What are you doing here?
- 1:24:42She's like, this is my house, which I was thinking to myself,
- 1:24:45you were just here the other night, man.
- 1:24:47I get that you were horny, but calm down dude.
- 1:24:51Like and. He's like, all right, well, can
- 1:24:52I call the cops? So he goes inside, calls the
- 1:24:54cops. The cops show up and leads him
- 1:24:57down there to Marty's car. Except it's not Marty's car
- 1:24:59anymore. It's like a completely different
- 1:25:01car. Completely different make and
- 1:25:02model and color. Nobody there.
- 1:25:04And they're like, all right, we're we need you to put your
- 1:25:08hands against the vehicle. They suspect he's on something.
- 1:25:11And this cop at this point is so fucking done with him.
- 1:25:13He's like, if I see you again, we're going to have a bad time.
- 1:25:18So Clarissa invites Bill back to her house and he goes, I'm not
- 1:25:21in the mood. She goes, I didn't mean like
- 1:25:22that. She actually sounds really hurt
- 1:25:24that he thought that she was just suggesting they have sex.
- 1:25:28And they end up sleeping in the Jeep.
- 1:25:31Yep, he just like has like rest of his head on her lap.
- 1:25:35And it's the next morning. And he arrives to school and I
- 1:25:38like this detail that they kept him in this wrinkly suit that
- 1:25:41he'd worn to the funeral the day before because that's what he
- 1:25:43had with him. Mm, hmm, yeah.
- 1:25:45And he comes in and he talks to Jenny and he's like, can you
- 1:25:49please just tell me the truth? And she looks kind of sad, but
- 1:25:52she doesn't really say anything. And then Bill gets up on stage,
- 1:25:57and he sees Jenny entered out in the audience, and Turd has the
- 1:26:02same sweater we saw in the woods the night before.
- 1:26:04Yeah. And he says Martin, who has
- 1:26:08never missed a day of school, has never been late and has won
- 1:26:11multiple attendance awards, is not here.
- 1:26:13And he won't be here because he's dead.
- 1:26:16Blanchard, who is also dead, was in fact murdered in Martin
- 1:26:21Petrie was going to expose the people that murdered him, so he
- 1:26:25in turn was murdered. And everybody's laughing 'cause
- 1:26:28they think it's a big joke. And then they laugh even harder,
- 1:26:30because as soon as he finishes this little monologue, Martin
- 1:26:33Petrie arrives and says he had car trouble.
- 1:26:36I noticed a thing here that I don't know if it was intentional
- 1:26:40or not, but when he arrives on stage and Bill's walking off,
- 1:26:44he's like grabbing his throat. He's like rubbing his throat
- 1:26:47here. Oh, I didn't notice.
- 1:26:49That he's doing that for a little bit, yeah.
- 1:26:51Like right where he got cut at. You think he's like kind of
- 1:26:55teasing Bill a little bit? I think he might be because he,
- 1:26:59I mean, he's part of society. So he's like, yeah, this right
- 1:27:01here. You saw this shit cut.
- 1:27:02That was just me doing a little bit of mini shunt right there.
- 1:27:06That's what we call masturbation here in the society.
- 1:27:11Yeah. But yeah, it was like an
- 1:27:14interesting thing. I I just noticed him doing that.
- 1:27:16I was like, huh, That definitely feels like it was something.
- 1:27:18So Bill leaves and Milo follows him and he's like, listen, I put
- 1:27:22the dolls in your deep in locker and Bill's like, wow, that's
- 1:27:27really cool, why would you do that?
- 1:27:29And Milo goes because I'm your best friend, but only when it's
- 1:27:32convenient. And then Bill goes, oh, I'm an
- 1:27:36asshole. Yeah, he's like, oh, man, I'm
- 1:27:39sorry. You're right.
- 1:27:40I get kind of caught up in this stuff.
- 1:27:41And then Milo, it's OK, man. Maybe it's because we've been
- 1:27:44watching a lot of American Dad lately, but this feels like 100%
- 1:27:49of the Steven Snot storylines. Maybe it will, but that's
- 1:27:53because Steven Snot are old Jet friends and these guys are here.
- 1:27:56I like having a moment. They're legit friends, yeah.
- 1:27:58It was really nice when, like, Bill was called out on
- 1:28:01something. He's like, yeah, you know what?
- 1:28:02You're right. I've been kind of an asshole to
- 1:28:04you. I'm sorry, man.
- 1:28:05Like, let's just be tight now. I feel like this is the ultimate
- 1:28:08moment of growth for Bill in the entire movie, honestly.
- 1:28:11Where he was. He was.
- 1:28:13Like dude, if they had I. Suck a little bit too.
- 1:28:15If they had like big enough arms they could have done Arnold and
- 1:28:18Dylan like. I think you're gonna say if they
- 1:28:21had. Big enough arms they would have
- 1:28:23been able to hug each other and then wrap their arms around the
- 1:28:25way Clarissa did the other night.
- 1:28:28Why not both? So.
- 1:28:34He's got Milo on board now because he tells him the whole
- 1:28:37conspiracy shit. And then Milo's like, well,
- 1:28:39that's interesting you say this because I followed you the other
- 1:28:42night. Sorry about that invasion of
- 1:28:44privacy also. But when you went into the
- 1:28:47woods, I saw Martin and David come out of the woods.
- 1:28:52Duh, duh, duh. Sorry, I was.
- 1:28:57Gonna prove no, you're OK. So Milo drops Bill off at home,
- 1:29:01and when he walks in, he sees the judge in Doctor Cleveland
- 1:29:04there with his family. And I'm just gonna say, Jenny
- 1:29:08right here looks so much like Reese Witherspoon it's
- 1:29:10disgusting. I can see that.
- 1:29:12Yeah, I can see the. Resiliency, and I mean,
- 1:29:14disgusting in like a cute way, but like, yeah, I love Reese
- 1:29:18Witherspoon, who does something like, right, thank you.
- 1:29:21Nobody. Would say no to.
- 1:29:24That so they bill is like, Oh no, I'm not Nope, we're not
- 1:29:28doing this. And he tries to leave and then
- 1:29:30like these paramedics just appear and they grab him and
- 1:29:33they sedate him and they take him to the hospital.
- 1:29:36But because Milo's out there, he follows the ambulance.
- 1:29:39So he goes in there into the hospital where he sees that they
- 1:29:42dropped him off and he asks about Bill and they tell him
- 1:29:46that Bill is in the morgue. He's straight up dead.
- 1:29:50So he's he calls bullshit on that.
- 1:29:51He's like, there's no fucking way that Bill is dead.
- 1:29:54Evan Richards not cry. I'm just like if you're bestest
- 1:29:59bubby in the world. He knows he's not dead.
- 1:30:03But he's surprised in like 10 minutes when Bill walks out,
- 1:30:07he's like, but you're dead. But they said you were dead.
- 1:30:11He he's calling bullshit the entire time.
- 1:30:14Even the way that the guy says no way.
- 1:30:16He's like. No way, No way he.
- 1:30:19Like says it like that. No.
- 1:30:21Yeah. He's, he's refusing to believe
- 1:30:25that Bill is dead here. So he's like.
- 1:30:27And then he. Walks outside and he sees that
- 1:30:29they have Bill's Jeep there waiting for him.
- 1:30:32So that's why you wait there, because you know.
- 1:30:34Talk for a second about Milo being the asshole that parks in
- 1:30:39the handicapped spot when there's an open spot right next.
- 1:30:41To you. He didn't just do that.
- 1:30:43He parked in the handicapped spot while double parking.
- 1:30:47Yes, two parking spots. Yeah, the dude is an asshole.
- 1:30:51But I'm also gonna say, can we talk about the hospital being an
- 1:30:54asshole for putting these two handicap spots right next to a
- 1:30:57stairs only entrance to the hospital?
- 1:30:59That is pretty shitty, Yeah, And I'm sorry BMW drivers out there,
- 1:31:04but he was a BMW driver and they have a reputation around here in
- 1:31:07Lexington for being like that. So we cut some bill.
- 1:31:10He is, in fact, alive in the hospital, and he's dreaming.
- 1:31:14And then he wakes up when he thinks he hears Blanchard
- 1:31:16screaming. So he looks to the side.
- 1:31:19He hallucinates. Shadows and here's like actual
- 1:31:23hubbub Hubbubanan and attacks the curtain but there's nobody
- 1:31:28there. Yeah, so then we just got like a
- 1:31:31next shot of him. He's just strolling out of the
- 1:31:33hospital, no fight. He is freed because he realized
- 1:31:36that he's actually right and there's not.
- 1:31:38He's like, I've been afraid and paranoid my entire life.
- 1:31:43And I was right. And Milo's like, what's wrong
- 1:31:46with you? And he goes everything.
- 1:31:49See, the way I took this? I thought that he was so drugged
- 1:31:51up here. Oh, I think there's an element
- 1:31:53of that too. I think he's still drugged up,
- 1:31:55but I also think there's like that kind of freedom that comes
- 1:31:59with being like, so it's weird, 'cause you get like yes, so like
- 1:32:05he's, you get a certain you're fogged up from the drugs, but
- 1:32:08you also get like a certain clarity of like nothing actually
- 1:32:11really fucking matters. And I.
- 1:32:13Think everybody has done a drug before, Yeah.
- 1:32:16I think that's where Bill is at with it.
- 1:32:19I think he's like he's. Like, you know what, I'm gonna
- 1:32:21drive the chorus chorus house and I'm gonna like confront her
- 1:32:25about this shit. So that's, I mean this we
- 1:32:27literally just a cut straight to him over there and he's like
- 1:32:30swapping her. I I use the word accosts it's.
- 1:32:34Probably more fitting, yeah. He's like, he's straight up
- 1:32:37confronting her. He's like, I know you're part of
- 1:32:39him. And she's like, just don't go
- 1:32:41home, wink, wink. He's like, I'm going home.
- 1:32:45I'm on my way. I love his response.
- 1:32:49He's like, he's like home. That's where the party's at.
- 1:32:53He's like, that's where I'm going.
- 1:32:54I'm going to the party. So like it cuts.
- 1:32:57And. He sounds every bit as manic as
- 1:32:59the way you just portrayed that. Yeah.
- 1:33:01That's his whole energy this entire time.
- 1:33:03As soon as he steps out of the hospital, that's his whole
- 1:33:05energy. He even has like the like
- 1:33:08whenever he's like, laughing at people.
- 1:33:10So Bill drives off and Milo follows, and Mrs. Carlin is in
- 1:33:13the car, but she won't get out. So he's like, all right, cool, I
- 1:33:15guess we're just going together again.
- 1:33:17I explained she's trying her hardest to eat his hair and he's
- 1:33:20like, listen, like that's where we draw the line.
- 1:33:23No hair. Has really nice hair.
- 1:33:25It's got that nice curly. Hair.
- 1:33:27I guess if you were a connoisseur of hair, that's what
- 1:33:29you'd go for. She.
- 1:33:30Yeah, you know, I'm sure. I like, I wanna run my fingers
- 1:33:34through it like it was really nice looking here.
- 1:33:35It's a nice boundary but man what What the fuck was their
- 1:33:38plan with her here? Like they it feels like they
- 1:33:41have some kind of meaning behind including her.
- 1:33:44I just don't fully understand it and it helps to know that they
- 1:33:48don't understand it. Yeah.
- 1:33:50So when Bill gets home, it basically is like the beginning
- 1:33:53of the movie. That nightmare he has where?
- 1:33:55He walks into. This empty house and he's sweaty
- 1:33:58and everything's empty but he's still hearing sounds like he's
- 1:34:01hearing them saying he's. Here, he's here.
- 1:34:03But nobody's there and he grabs a knife and he goes upstairs and
- 1:34:06when he peeks out the window he sees his parents car pulling up,
- 1:34:09so he goes downstairs. He's ready to threaten them,
- 1:34:13approach them, coax whatever answers he needs to get out of
- 1:34:16them. And as soon as they open the
- 1:34:17door and he's like, we need to talk, he is grabbed.
- 1:34:20There's an entire surprise party here, and it's very much like in
- 1:34:23Horrible Bosses where he's like, God damn it, you know?
- 1:34:26I hate that. Yeah, they like get one of those
- 1:34:30like animal ringing things. Like they like, it's like a net
- 1:34:32thing where they, like, put it across his neck and just like,
- 1:34:36yeah. That's how they get like
- 1:34:38aggressive stray dogs like so that way they don't have to
- 1:34:41worry about getting bitten. Yeah, and they just have them
- 1:34:44pinned down. They're like, OK, man, like
- 1:34:47you're, you're gonna be part of society now.
- 1:34:50And then the therapist comes out from the top of the stairs and
- 1:34:54congratulates everyone on a job well done, performances of the
- 1:34:58lifetime. He introduces the judge.
- 1:35:01The judge comes downstairs and explains to build that they're
- 1:35:05just a different race, a different species, a different
- 1:35:08class. Oh yeah, and the parents also
- 1:35:10reveal that they're not his parents here too.
- 1:35:12Yeah, Nan seems so excited for like, I'm not your fucking
- 1:35:16mother. God, this is what.
- 1:35:18It's all been building up to for them.
- 1:35:20They're like, Oh my God, I can't wait to tell him that he's not
- 1:35:22my son. Like oh man, that's so brutal.
- 1:35:26So Clarissa is at the party in her very 80s, very teased side
- 1:35:33pony. This is Judy in sleepaway camp
- 1:35:38if she was in this movie. Final level right there, right
- 1:35:41there. If she like a.
- 1:35:42Little Judy. Yeah, yeah, right there.
- 1:35:43It's her final form. The judge says, though, that
- 1:35:48they're having a double header tonight and we see Milo has
- 1:35:52witnessed them. Will somebody into that house
- 1:35:56from the ambulance. And it is revealed to be
- 1:35:59Blanchard, who is in fact still alive, and they're going to
- 1:36:01serve him up along with Billy. So let's see.
- 1:36:07This is where the shunting starts and I just don't know if
- 1:36:10there are enough words to explain this if you haven't seen
- 1:36:13it. Just gotta see it.
- 1:36:14Like, I mean, it's the most impressive effects work I think
- 1:36:18I've ever seen. Practical Effects.
- 1:36:20What it was that he was saying that they were working with
- 1:36:22because he was using like the actual chemical terms of it.
- 1:36:26But like, it's so amazing. It is such amazing work you
- 1:36:30guys. If you have any appreciation for
- 1:36:32special effects at all and you're just not listening to
- 1:36:35this review of this movie without having actually watched
- 1:36:37it, just go watch. If nothing else, just go to
- 1:36:41YouTube and type in Shunting Society and appreciate the
- 1:36:46fucking love that Screaming man George and all of the actors put
- 1:36:51into this. Because getting those
- 1:36:53prosthetics applied could not have been.
- 1:36:55Comfortable. It's just one of those things
- 1:36:57that I wondered to myself, how did he pull it off?
- 1:37:00Because they do these things where these people, they're
- 1:37:02feeding on Blanchard at this point and like they have their
- 1:37:07face attached to his body and like a it's like almost like a
- 1:37:10mosquito like sucking out of him and.
- 1:37:14I there's so many people involved and there are so many
- 1:37:17shots and angles of this and like I've done a little bit of
- 1:37:20like extra work on movies and as like a non speaking extra, I can
- 1:37:24tell you it takes a long time to shoot a single scene.
- 1:37:30And I can't imagine the time that went in to shoot this
- 1:37:34scene. And that's not even counting
- 1:37:37applying the prosthetics, creating the effects, all of the
- 1:37:42different shape shifting and rearranging that they have to do
- 1:37:46with it. And this had to.
- 1:37:48Have been a multi day process and like props to all of the
- 1:37:52people involved to make this look as seamless and just God
- 1:37:56damn beautiful as it is. I think in the Q&A on the
- 1:38:00Blu-ray, Brian, yes, mentioned that this is like the first
- 1:38:03thing that they shot. Like if you like, and I can see
- 1:38:07that too, because this is probably the day when they need
- 1:38:09the most extras, they get the most people involved, and
- 1:38:11they're going to know who's going to be dedicated enough to
- 1:38:14come back. I think it's wise because if
- 1:38:16you're going to like this is where you blow your budget, like
- 1:38:18blow your. Budget and.
- 1:38:19Then you know what you have to work with for the.
- 1:38:21Rest of the exactly. Instead of like running out of.
- 1:38:23Money at the end of it. Like fuck, we need a a lot of
- 1:38:26money for the shunting and oh we.
- 1:38:28Need to. Shoot some therapists saying
- 1:38:29it's cool, we can use my own personal Yeah.
- 1:38:32Exactly. Yes, exactly.
- 1:38:34You need a hoops license plate. I've got that.
- 1:38:36I'm a Hooper. I'm from.
- 1:38:38Kentucky. Yeah, I got it right here, cats.
- 1:38:42Cats, cats, cats. Am I right?
- 1:38:45Man, so yeah, there's like a whole lot of that we get.
- 1:38:49It's amazing. And basically what they're doing
- 1:38:51is they are melding into David. They are sucking his life force
- 1:38:56out of him. He is still alive.
- 1:38:58It appears to be very painful for him.
- 1:39:00And guess what? No, it's not over because we
- 1:39:05watched the judge arrive. They tell him he's pliable.
- 1:39:10And you're like, oh, God, I never want to hear that word
- 1:39:13described to a person in this situation.
- 1:39:15Yeah. And David is fisted to death.
- 1:39:22That's essentially, yeah. He's just like.
- 1:39:24Six not even essentially, that's literally like it just is this
- 1:39:28goes all the way up through his entire body and up into his
- 1:39:31brain and. He collects his birth or not
- 1:39:36birthmark, his beauty mark. They're the same.
- 1:39:38Yeah, same thing. During all this though, Jenny
- 1:39:42has been given the nod to go upstairs from.
- 1:39:45Yeah, the sexy nod with mom and Dad, and that's a sentence that
- 1:39:49I don't feel good having just said.
- 1:39:51So they disappear, and Clarissa and Turd Ferguson are also
- 1:39:55fighting off to the side. Cuz Ferguson's like, you don't
- 1:39:59actually feel for these people, do you?
- 1:40:03And when he's distracted by the judge fisting David, she
- 1:40:06releases Bill. Yeah.
- 1:40:08So Bill runs upstairs and he walks in on his mom, looking
- 1:40:14like maybe she's on the verge of climax.
- 1:40:17Her her torso is fine but her legs are like men legs like all
- 1:40:25hairy and shit and like I don't know what's happened here.
- 1:40:29I think the dad has broken off a part of himself on her and then
- 1:40:33like, I don't fucking know. And Jenny's in there somewhere
- 1:40:36because the mom gets out of bed and Jenny's in her vajay.
- 1:40:42Yeah, and then she times her wine.
- 1:40:44Here. Your Oedipal fantasies.
- 1:40:46If you, if you have any Oedipal fantasies, now's your time,
- 1:40:49Billy. Like he backs off from that and
- 1:40:52then he goes over to the sheets and then a fucking butt comes up
- 1:40:55from beneath the sheets here. And not, there's no asshole
- 1:41:01there. It's Billy's dad, not Billy's
- 1:41:04mother. Billy's dad father.
- 1:41:08Billy's father with his face where the asshole should be is
- 1:41:12like huh, I guess you're right son.
- 1:41:13I am a butt head. And then he makes fart sounds.
- 1:41:17This honestly makes me kind of love Billy's dad.
- 1:41:20It is kind of funny that he held on today.
- 1:41:22He's like, you know what? I'm.
- 1:41:23I'm using this. Yeah, he's like, yeah, you know
- 1:41:25what I'm going to do? You think that like maybe Jenny
- 1:41:28and Nan were fucking and Jim was like, I know that Bill's going
- 1:41:32to come up the stairs any minute now.
- 1:41:34I got to get into butt for him. That's.
- 1:41:36The. Furthest I want to ever
- 1:41:38speculate on the scene because I don't really know what else may
- 1:41:41have potentially happened up. There, that's fair.
- 1:41:43That's. Fair.
- 1:41:43So Bill goes out. By the way, he's been chased by
- 1:41:47his therapist upstairs this whole time, and his therapist is
- 1:41:50waiting for him again up there. So he gets corralled by his
- 1:41:53therapist and they take him back downstairs and now they are
- 1:41:57about to begin the shunt on him. Except he challenges Turd
- 1:42:01Ferguson to fisticuffs. Before that, though, Milo
- 1:42:05outside with Chorus's mom. He, he's gotten a cop disguised
- 1:42:10because there was a cop out there that was keeping watch.
- 1:42:13So he's this guy's a cop. Same.
- 1:42:14One from before that like. At the crash.
- 1:42:17Scene at the crash scene and in the woods.
- 1:42:19Yeah. So he's now inside there.
- 1:42:21So yeah, he's challenged Ted to a fight and they actually end up
- 1:42:27fighting. He ends up getting his ass
- 1:42:28kicked a little bit. But then as Ted starts to try
- 1:42:31and begin a little shunting on him, he like starts to.
- 1:42:34I think this is when he. OK, soft and hold on.
- 1:42:37This is a moment though. So they're fighting.
- 1:42:40Milo comes in and he wants to try and help.
- 1:42:44He immediately gets pushed to the side but misses Carlin like
- 1:42:47tackles turd and that's enough to distract him for a minute.
- 1:42:51But it doesn't matter 'cause he ends up coming back.
- 1:42:54He gets Bill pinned and he's like Sue's arm and then it
- 1:42:57starts to go all like Gumby. That's Bill's terminology.
- 1:43:02You just call him Gumby, Yeah. I'm not disparaging Gumby at
- 1:43:05all, and he is about to do the same thing to Bill that the
- 1:43:08judge did to David, except Bill takes his first and like turns
- 1:43:12it around on him and like guides it up to his own brain and turns
- 1:43:16him inside out the way that I always imagined.
- 1:43:19The ending of It came from Beneath the Sink by RL Stein.
- 1:43:23Classic goosebumps. Wait, no, it came from beneath
- 1:43:27the sink? Or is it the creature from the
- 1:43:29basement, one of those where it turns out like everybody is
- 1:43:32actually inside out? Oh wow.
- 1:43:35This is like the version of it that I imagined and I feel like
- 1:43:39RL Stein probably also watched Society at some point.
- 1:43:43Was like I need to write a kid friendly version of this 'cause
- 1:43:46it's basically that. Like it's the kid feels like an
- 1:43:49outsider and eventually finds out her whole family is inside
- 1:43:52out monster that sounds. Exactly.
- 1:43:53Like this Yes and RL Stein kid I've read.
- 1:43:57I read his debut adult novel in his nasty.
- 1:44:00So. I don't see him getting down
- 1:44:02with society. I don't doubt that he's capable
- 1:44:04of it. So, yeah, I mean, that's what
- 1:44:06Bill does. He like, takes his hand, reaches
- 1:44:08up there, he gets it in his brain.
- 1:44:09He's like sticking his, like, thumb and fingers out of his eye
- 1:44:13and mouth and it's awesome. He then takes a hold of it and
- 1:44:16then he turns him completely inside out.
- 1:44:19God. It's so.
- 1:44:22Amazing they. Do you can see his whole nervous
- 1:44:24system? Yeah.
- 1:44:26Out there on display, it's incredible and this is enough to
- 1:44:30scare everybody around there like, oh shit, if we shunt we
- 1:44:34can be pulled inside out by somebody that doesn't want to be
- 1:44:37shunted so they all back. Off boner killers, yeah, for.
- 1:44:40All of that, everybody just backs away from building like we
- 1:44:43don't want that to happen to us. So as he's about to walk out, my
- 1:44:46was like about he takes course. So he's got a gun now, could
- 1:44:50have used that way earlier. But it might not have worked on
- 1:44:53them. They might have just like
- 1:44:54absorbed it. Yeah, I know he, I guess he
- 1:44:57thinks he's important here. And then as they're about to
- 1:45:00walk out the front door, the dad is like, all right, I gotta be
- 1:45:03the last one in defense here. And then Bill just punches him
- 1:45:06in the face. And then as he's walking out the
- 1:45:08door, he's like, fuck you, butt head or something like that.
- 1:45:12I don't know. He goes on a butt head.
- 1:45:13Again, the three of them leave. Mrs. Carlin's still inside, so
- 1:45:16fuck her I guess. Yeah, right.
- 1:45:18Yeah. Claire's.
- 1:45:20Just like I don't really care. About yeah, she really didn't
- 1:45:22like her. Yeah.
- 1:45:23And she is part of society, so whatever, you know, I don't know
- 1:45:26if she really cared to be there or not.
- 1:45:28And that's it. And they just drive away and
- 1:45:30they pill out. That's how the movie ends.
- 1:45:32You know what? You're right, it is a perfect
- 1:45:35movie. OK, cool.
- 1:45:37It's 10. All right.
- 1:45:38Well, I'm glad that you got convinced.
- 1:45:40I mean it. Didn't take much but.
- 1:45:42Like, no, I mean the way I can excuse a lot of the weird and
- 1:45:47bads as like, well, it kind of plays into the strengths of the
- 1:45:52movie in a way. And I'm not saying that as like
- 1:45:55a way of like forgiving it for its shortcomings because I'm
- 1:45:58biased. I'm just saying, like, if you do
- 1:46:01make a little bit of jank like that in a surreal type of movie
- 1:46:04like this, a lot of times it can end up actually working in his
- 1:46:07favor. And I like, I'm also gonna like
- 1:46:10you guys have heard us talk about Cartoon Network plenty of
- 1:46:14times. If you're a budget to your
- 1:46:17patron, you've heard us cover some of the Adult Swim, Adult
- 1:46:22Swim stuff. We are huge fans of Tim and
- 1:46:25Eric, so obviously we're like in with the surreal shit.
- 1:46:31That's so yeah. So we might be a little bit
- 1:46:34biased, but I'm also going to say a lot of times when we do
- 1:46:37that, it's more for humor. And while this definitely is a
- 1:46:42funny movie, it is also incredibly horrifying.
- 1:46:46No, with surrealism, horror hits me probably the hardest.
- 1:46:51And now I I really appreciate surreal comedy too.
- 1:46:54But like, if you give me some surreal horror and it's like,
- 1:46:57actually effective with its execution, I find that to be the
- 1:47:00most unsettling stuff out there. Yeah.
- 1:47:02Because I mean, it just kind of puts you in this place where
- 1:47:05you're just like, what the fuck happened?
- 1:47:07Like am I safe? Like what the fuck?
- 1:47:10And I'm going to say I don't want to make a change because I
- 1:47:12know my criticism before was not knowing what happened with
- 1:47:15Shauna. Instead of making my change, I
- 1:47:17want to make that my sequel. I want to see that be Shauna's
- 1:47:20game. That's would you sequel
- 1:47:22potential right there. I would like to follow her
- 1:47:24character. I want to follow her character.
- 1:47:26I want to get a little bit more like inner workings of the
- 1:47:28society now that we've seen that like reveal and we know that
- 1:47:32that's a thing. I'm not saying I want an
- 1:47:34explanation from where they come from because I know you don't
- 1:47:36love that. You didn't like that with Hostel
- 1:47:38Part 2? I mean, we get enough of an
- 1:47:40explanation here. Like, it's just like it's always
- 1:47:42been. It's been like the top tier of
- 1:47:44society throughout all time. I just mean that I want to see
- 1:47:47like more of an explanation of the things that happen to them,
- 1:47:51like where we get like a hint of it with the judge getting the
- 1:47:53beauty mark. I want to see like maybe a
- 1:47:55little bit more of like how that influences like the way they
- 1:47:58interact with each other. We'll we'll listen to her
- 1:48:01sequel. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:48:02Like that's what I want. Like this, I'm talking about the
- 1:48:05sequel right now. This is what I want as a sequel.
- 1:48:07Yeah. And you can have Bill kind of
- 1:48:09show up there and like kind of give guidance to her, like, hey,
- 1:48:12by the way, you don't really wanna be there.
- 1:48:14But she's not gonna. She's gonna be like, she's gonna
- 1:48:16blow that off because she really wants to be a part of that.
- 1:48:19Exactly. I wanna see that.
- 1:48:20I wanna see how that happens, where like Bill is like afraid
- 1:48:24of it and is actively avoiding it.
- 1:48:26I wanna see the difference of it with Shawna, like seeking it out
- 1:48:31and how it affects her, like being kind of pushed out.
- 1:48:33I want to see her like try and tackle like an industry like she
- 1:48:36there in California, go to like Hollywood and see if she can
- 1:48:39like see what kind of like something they do over there.
- 1:48:42Kind of like a merge between this and what I'm hoping,
- 1:48:46Maxine. Is that's exactly what I was
- 1:48:48singing. Yeah.
- 1:48:49Yeah. I mean, kind of like that.
- 1:48:50Like she goes there and she's like, all right.
- 1:48:52Like I want to be famous. I want to be an actor, you know,
- 1:48:56She's like, I've got the looks for it.
- 1:48:58So like, put me in a movie and then, oh God, there's a lot of
- 1:49:03like, nasty potential for that. There's so there's so much
- 1:49:06potential. I read something that had like
- 1:49:08no blue links to it. So I don't know how much legs
- 1:49:12there are to it that supposedly there is a sequel in pre
- 1:49:19production which this was 11 years ago and again, no blue
- 1:49:22links. Yes, so, and I don't, I didn't
- 1:49:27look any further into it because of that.
- 1:49:29Yeah, but it said there is like a supposed script out there for
- 1:49:34society to body modification, which I don't want that 'cause
- 1:49:37that kind of almost sounds like American Mary.
- 1:49:41I guess it depends on what you do with it.
- 1:49:43Yeah, If it's Brian Yisner and screaming Matt George comes
- 1:49:49back, then fuck. Yeah, give me that.
- 1:49:50Yeah, I would. I will watch anything with the
- 1:49:52two of them. Yeah.
- 1:49:53Absolutely. Yeah, like I just God, someday
- 1:49:57we're going to cover the dentist one and two, which is also Brian
- 1:50:01Yeznat. Oh, Talia's not a family, OK.
- 1:50:04Well, this is a good time to talk about what Talia thought
- 1:50:06about the movie as she's speaking out.
- 1:50:09As you can hear, Talia came up from the streets.
- 1:50:14In fact, she was found in a dumpster behind an Outback.
- 1:50:18So she didn't just come from the streets, she came from the harsh
- 1:50:21desert wasteland that is Australia.
- 1:50:24And she doesn't trust rich people most of the time anyway
- 1:50:29because their floors are really wide but also really slippery
- 1:50:32and there are too many tall people and she just doesn't
- 1:50:35trust those in general. Not all rich.
- 1:50:37People are tall. Enough of them are and that
- 1:50:41makes her nervous. So I think Charlie and also like
- 1:50:45as much as she loves liking us to show her love, like I don't
- 1:50:49know that she would like it if her tongue actually literally
- 1:50:52merged with our skin. Yeah, she doesn't like that.
- 1:50:54I don't think she would. Care for that?
- 1:50:55Yeah. So I think Talia finds this
- 1:50:57movie appropriately horrifying and would also give it a 10.
- 1:51:01I think so too. And as of or As for Zoe's
- 1:51:06Ultimate Warrior? Hear me out.
- 1:51:08Maybe the mom? No, hear me out.
- 1:51:12I think it's Jim the dad. I think it's specifically
- 1:51:17because of the butt head joke, because we love to call Scout a
- 1:51:21butt head. And in fact, it is one of like
- 1:51:24our family history's greatest burns of all time was the fact
- 1:51:28that we called Scout a butt head and we said we have proof
- 1:51:31because she has two cheeks and it.
- 1:51:35It got a great reaction. I I realized that it sounds
- 1:51:38stupid, but Scout understood the cadence of that and she walked
- 1:51:42out of the room and didn't reappear for like 24 hours.
- 1:51:45She was. It it burned her, that was the
- 1:51:48burn right there that got her the way she is today.
- 1:51:51And I think the fact that Jim owned it and eventually made it
- 1:51:55a thing, and Scout to this day will now own it and just kind of
- 1:51:58glare at us while we make this joke.
- 1:52:00And because Scout is Zoe's big sister and Zoe looks to her for
- 1:52:04how she should react to things, I think that Zoe strongly like
- 1:52:12like relates to Jim. In that way, OK, I can.
- 1:52:15I can get behind that right there.
- 1:52:18And I think this is where we're gonna lose a lot of listeners
- 1:52:21because that was such a weird insight to our family that
- 1:52:23probably was not in dairy. Remember Scout, I would say
- 1:52:26would be plantered because he hid in the closet.
- 1:52:31That's Scout's thing. Scout thinks that she was a
- 1:52:35kitten and my roommate needed her like we needed the air
- 1:52:38conditioner replaced in our apartment and it was in my
- 1:52:40roommate's closet and they came over to replace it.
- 1:52:43Didn't finish it in a single day and Scout hid in the wall in the
- 1:52:48closet. Yep, she's a little asshole, OK?
- 1:52:55Who did you relate to Travis? God, who did I relate to in this
- 1:52:59movie? I think I relate to Milo because
- 1:53:04I think that like I was that friend right there, that like I
- 1:53:09had the rich friend and he was, he reminded me a little bit of
- 1:53:15Billy and that he was like the rich kid, but he didn't fit in
- 1:53:20with the rest of that shit. So and I, I kind of like, I
- 1:53:27relate to that dynamic between them.
- 1:53:28So I, we don't necessarily know Milo his whole background.
- 1:53:34We just know that he's his friend and they go to the same
- 1:53:36school. OK.
- 1:53:37But yeah, I think that that would probably be the closest
- 1:53:40thing for me. OK.
- 1:53:41What about you? Oh boy, I guess if I had to
- 1:53:48relate to somebody, I feel like maybe I'd relate to Martin
- 1:53:58Petrie. Because like, I was a nerd and I
- 1:54:06in theory should have been a shoe in for class president, but
- 1:54:10like, you know, popular people good at sports went out over me.
- 1:54:14Did you run for it? I think by the time I was like a
- 1:54:18senior where it like quote, UN quote matters.
- 1:54:20Like I'd given up on the thought of it, that I tried it a couple
- 1:54:23of times and like I remember God, not to out nerd myself, but
- 1:54:29we used to have the class representative and band.
- 1:54:33So you had one for freshman, sophomore, junior and senior.
- 1:54:37And I remember one time I ran against my friend and in his
- 1:54:41speech literally all he did was shake and bake and they ended up
- 1:54:45voting for him him in the stupid trumpet section and I what do?
- 1:54:50You expect from school I mean you're in school at the time, so
- 1:54:53I I respect you for actually trying that that place of like
- 1:54:56futures shit right there like you're.
- 1:54:58New. Tagline New tagline.
- 1:55:00What if we like feed the rich kind of go play on eat the rich
- 1:55:06or the rich eat instead of eat the rich?
- 1:55:10The rich eat. OK, sure, that works.
- 1:55:14Did Aerosmith convince you? No, I was actually thinking
- 1:55:17about it while you're. In there was.
- 1:55:18Just background music in my head there.
- 1:55:22OK, cool. OK.
- 1:55:23Eat the rich. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:55:25All right, eat the rich. The rich eat.
- 1:55:26Yeah, yeah, yeah. OK, all right.
- 1:55:28OK, OK, so on to reviews. Yes, OK.
- 1:55:34So. And we already did Dream SQL,
- 1:55:37yes, yeah. So we don't have to worry about
- 1:55:38that. So I know that we both love this
- 1:55:41movie. OK so I found a one out of 10 on
- 1:55:44IMDb. Fantastic.
- 1:55:46Even as an 80s horror fan, this is disappointing and boring.
- 1:55:50And this is written in 2022. Look, I love 80s horror.
- 1:55:56I don't mind weird storytelling or bizarre creatures.
- 1:55:59Above all, society is plain, right boring.
- 1:56:02This movie slouches to tell a story about a guy who's getting
- 1:56:04aware of the situation, that his family isn't what they seem to
- 1:56:07be. It's a great premise actually,
- 1:56:09and it's a great coming of age theme overall, but this movie
- 1:56:12doesn't get it. The pace of the story is so slow
- 1:56:15you could easily cut the movie down to 30 minutes without
- 1:56:17missing any plot lines. The great finale is just
- 1:56:20bizarre. Not shocking bizarre, but not
- 1:56:24bizarre in a cool way. Since the horror community seems
- 1:56:27to like the movie and I never watched it before, I was very
- 1:56:29excited to discover a new gem of a movie history.
- 1:56:33Boy was I wrong. Honestly the movie is so bad and
- 1:56:36boring it's a criteria to judge a person if I like him or her,
- 1:56:39not him, slash her or not. Really can't trust anyone who
- 1:56:43truly likes this movie. Save your valuable time, don't
- 1:56:48watch it. There's nothing entertaining
- 1:56:49about this movie. Wow, OK, this person needs
- 1:56:52something to happen on screen all the time.
- 1:56:55I think yes, Which that's fine. I get those types of movies.
- 1:56:58We were talking to Nike in the last drive and they had a
- 1:57:01graduation day. Where Joe Bob not.
- 1:57:05Yeah, he said. Every 9 minutes.
- 1:57:06Which is not yeah, that's not true, but death every 9 minutes,
- 1:57:10this is that type of person it sounds like which there's
- 1:57:12nothing wrong with that. There's.
- 1:57:13Nothing wrong with that and I get it 'cause everybody has a
- 1:57:16different thing they like in movies.
- 1:57:17And we did talk about this movie is a lot of build up and it
- 1:57:21really is. And for us, for the two of us,
- 1:57:24the build off pays. Well, it's it's a lot of build
- 1:57:28up, but I feel like you get enough scattered throughout the
- 1:57:31movie to like keep you going. Like it.
- 1:57:34It keeps me going. It gives me enough.
- 1:57:37That you're wondering like what is actually going on?
- 1:57:39Is this in his head, or is there something supernatural or
- 1:57:42extraterrestrial or what's involved?
- 1:57:44I thought for some watch for this right here.
- 1:57:47I really thought that this is going to be a movie about him
- 1:57:49just having shit in his head. But then by the time we get to
- 1:57:52the end, you get the whole reveal like, oh shit, this is
- 1:57:54just a weird fucking like little society cult thing that they got
- 1:57:57going on. Yeah, but no, like I feel like
- 1:58:01this movie for me has enough put in there to like you get the
- 1:58:06weird body shit going on, you get you get some deaths every
- 1:58:10now and then. You don't get like on screen
- 1:58:12kills. That's the thing that this movie
- 1:58:14lacks really, except for the end where they kill Blanchard.
- 1:58:17Like you don't really see anybody outright die in this
- 1:58:20movie, which if you got some of that, sure, that's always going
- 1:58:24to make a movie more entertaining for me.
- 1:58:26But you know, like it's not a slow burn, but it's a movie
- 1:58:31that's more like tell than show. And then at the end they're
- 1:58:35like, OK, and now we'll pull the curtain back and you'll actually
- 1:58:38get to see what's going on. It's more it's more of that
- 1:58:42build up. If you like movies that have
- 1:58:44like a big pay off at the end. This I'm struggling to not call
- 1:58:48it a slow burn because it's not a slow burn but it has like the
- 1:58:51same type of like principles. I'm gonna bring it back to a 24
- 1:58:57cuz I was reading something online where people were talking
- 1:59:00about Midsummer and how a person was like, I just don't like it
- 1:59:04because you know exactly what's coming.
- 1:59:06And somebody was like, but that's the thing about it is you
- 1:59:09know what's coming and you're still, you're along for the like
- 1:59:13you care about the journey of it and the weirdness that's
- 1:59:16happening in the hints that are dropping left and right.
- 1:59:19I don't think anybody could say they knew what was coming.
- 1:59:21With this, definitely didn't know what was coming with this,
- 1:59:25but you're here for the journey of him figuring it out, right?
- 1:59:29And you're wishing the best for him and like, you just also just
- 1:59:33kind of really fucking want to know.
- 1:59:34Yeah, I agree. Yeah.
- 1:59:37And that's fine if that's not the kind of movie you like.
- 1:59:41It's not everybody's cup of tea. And.
- 1:59:43Especially this is. Weird and gross and disturbing
- 1:59:47and we consider it a work of fucking art.
- 1:59:50And I understand why other people don't.
- 1:59:53I think it's funny though that this is what you used to judge
- 1:59:57if you like are like friends with a person or not.
- 2:00:01Yeah homie and IMDb will not be listening to.
- 2:00:04Us no. Or maybe like.
- 2:00:06This will pop up on his Spotify and he'll be like, oh, cool.
- 2:00:10It's they're called. What's your least favorite scary
- 2:00:12movie? I can finally listen to somebody
- 2:00:13rag on this. And then they start off and
- 2:00:15they're like. What the fuck?
- 2:00:16Yeah. I'm sure we've talked about
- 2:00:19movies they've watched before, too, so we're like, oh sure,
- 2:00:21let's listen to them shit on society.
- 2:00:23And it's like, no, that's not what's gonna happen in this one.
- 2:00:26OK, I've got our listener reviews.
- 2:00:27OK, I'm glad we have multiple listener reviews it sounds like.
- 2:00:30Yeah, we got multiple from both. OK, so I'll start off with our
- 2:00:35Twitter reviews. So first we have Ward Zombie.
- 2:00:39What's up buddy? We have him saying, I don't
- 2:00:42remember the first time I saw this movie, but I will never
- 2:00:45forget it dripping in classic 8 or away, 80s camp and inning.
- 2:00:50You can't Unsee once you see it. This is one movie you have to
- 2:00:53see just for the experience. That is a great sum up right
- 2:00:57there. That is exactly what you need to
- 2:00:59like pitch this to a random person.
- 2:01:01Like look. And this is probably how I would
- 2:01:03describe it to a lot of people. Yeah, right there.
- 2:01:05That's exactly how you should explain this.
- 2:01:07Don't say anything else. Just say look, you just got to
- 2:01:10experience this thing. It's.
- 2:01:11Wild. I I will add the caveat is that
- 2:01:14I'm not going to recommend this to a casual viewer.
- 2:01:17You recommended things to a casual.
- 2:01:19Viewer it was not to a casual viewers to my friend that I know
- 2:01:22likes other weird movies like she was the one that told me
- 2:01:27about Ron Jeremy's horror movie not.
- 2:01:29The one we covered, but. The one about his mutant penis.
- 2:01:31Yeah, yeah, I know she. Yeah.
- 2:01:32OK. All right, next we have Tyler.
- 2:01:34What's up? He says the opening credits
- 2:01:37sequence is a is such a great preview of if you can handle the
- 2:01:40end or not. I threw up during both.
- 2:01:46This movie is actually pretty clever and horrific, and those
- 2:01:49effects are wild. Yeah, I didn't like.
- 2:01:52That's a great thing, man. Like this movie has, like, the
- 2:01:54effects to back it up, but it also has, like, the substance to
- 2:01:57it, too, that actually make it carry.
- 2:02:00It's great, man. It's a great combination.
- 2:02:01I love when horror movies can actually have both of those
- 2:02:04going for it. Absolutely.
- 2:02:06Fafi Yuzu TTV says this one's so campy and batshit insane.
- 2:02:11Absolutely loved it. It's impossible to sit through
- 2:02:13this movie with a straight face. Whether you're laughing or in
- 2:02:16disgust. Everybody here fucking gets this
- 2:02:20movie I'm loving. It yeah, 'cause I think the
- 2:02:22people that are going to want to review it are the people that
- 2:02:25that's true. Get it?
- 2:02:26OK, let's hop on over to Instagram podcast Wasted
- 2:02:30Potential, says my favorite movie to show people without
- 2:02:33context. So they're the opposite of you.
- 2:02:36They're like, yeah, I'm just going to show it to people.
- 2:02:38I wouldn't show it to like anybody without context.
- 2:02:41Like I would probably show it to my mom if she hasn't listened to
- 2:02:44this episode. I'll.
- 2:02:45Show this mom and Nana, I'll be a little man.
- 2:02:47I got a good movie. It's about it's a great social
- 2:02:49commentary on society. But.
- 2:02:51You also tried to show your Nana Black Christmas before.
- 2:02:53I do remind you that it says the C word like 10 times in the 1st
- 2:02:575 minutes. Which one do you think would
- 2:02:58hold up better in the house, Sister society or Black
- 2:03:01Christmas or society? I think we'd be able to get
- 2:03:03farther into society because like the weirdness is just a
- 2:03:07little off putting at first. Whereas again in the 1st 5
- 2:03:11minutes of Black Christmas we hear the word cunt.
- 2:03:13Yeah, but. We also.
- 2:03:15And your mom would be going. Where's Mommy?
- 2:03:17We got weird nudity in this. Too like he sees his sister with
- 2:03:20like a backwards torso in her butt and boobies like.
- 2:03:24All suggested it's not explicit until part way through.
- 2:03:28I think we could make it a certain amount.
- 2:03:29I think that class. Wasn't doing a lot of good work,
- 2:03:32I was getting a pretty good visual.
- 2:03:33In terms of quantity, I think we'd make it farther with
- 2:03:36society than we would like Christmas.
- 2:03:38That's fair. Our buddy Justin, 3000.
- 2:03:44Oh yeah, it doesn't. He just says time for the
- 2:03:46shunting. Yeah.
- 2:03:48Hell yeah, baby. If you know, you know.
- 2:03:51Yeah, keep safe, says Brian. Yezna rules and I love the style
- 2:03:55of this one. Brian.
- 2:03:57Yezna does fucking role. He does, and like generally I
- 2:04:00love the style of all of his movies because I think he brings
- 2:04:02the same energy towards all the shit that he does.
- 2:04:05Like there are certain directors that I'm going to watch
- 2:04:07basically anything they put out. It's like Brian Yezna, Jordan
- 2:04:11Peele, Ari Oster, Robert Eggers, and then who's the fucking guy
- 2:04:18that does the loved ones in hard candy?
- 2:04:23Fuck, what is his name? He's got a new one coming out
- 2:04:26finally, eventually, right? What the fuck is his name?
- 2:04:29Yeah, I can't remember his name. I'm sorry.
- 2:04:32Oh God, yeah, no, those are like directors that I like implicitly
- 2:04:36trust. His name is Sean Byrne.
- 2:04:40Sean Byrne Yeah, Yes. Like there are some directors
- 2:04:44that I'm just like, you've not. Yeah, like I'm gonna watch just
- 2:04:48because I trust you. Yeah.
- 2:04:50OK, final review. OK Tucker, who is like been one
- 2:04:54of the biggest fans that I've known of this movie in person
- 2:04:57for a long time. He's actually met Brian Yazner
- 2:05:00recently. Oh, I'm so happy.
- 2:05:01For him, yeah, He actually, I think, discussed this movie.
- 2:05:05But Tucker says OK, it is an actual crime that this movie
- 2:05:08doesn't get talked about more. It has everything you can ask
- 2:05:11for from a coked out 80s body horror feature.
- 2:05:14Full Throttle Yuzna and screaming mad George pot shots
- 2:05:19at the 1% I parentheses. Epstein 100% has a shunt or two
- 2:05:24on his island. Goop and gore.
- 2:05:26Gore, the butt head, the hen head.
- 2:05:29Oh fuck, I forgot about the hen head.
- 2:05:31Oh my. God yes, we're the.
- 2:05:33Therapist is like you just need a.
- 2:05:34Hand. Yeah.
- 2:05:35Oh, I forgot about that. All of the heads.
- 2:05:38This movie is peak body horror comedy and deserves all the love
- 2:05:42in the world. 10 out of 10. Fuck yeah.
- 2:05:44Tucker, you nailed that shit. Yeah.
- 2:05:47Oh my God, thank you for reminding me of the handhead.
- 2:05:49That was a great effect too. I remember seeing that thinking.
- 2:05:52Oh my God. So much happening in that like
- 2:05:5515 minute stretch. That's true.
- 2:05:57Please forgive us. We had to process a lot of shit
- 2:05:59with that one right there 'cause there was just so much going on.
- 2:06:03Oh my God, yeah. This movie is just so great.
- 2:06:05It's perfect. It's amazing, and I'm glad we're
- 2:06:07ending it on a high note. We're ending prom note on a high
- 2:06:10prom month on a high note. Yeah.
- 2:06:12And I guess that means it's time to announce that next month is
- 2:06:17June. And like last year, we're gonna
- 2:06:19be doing Pride Month. So that means that all of our
- 2:06:23proceeds that we get from Patreon subscriptions are going
- 2:06:26to go once again to the Trevor Project.
- 2:06:29Yeah. So if you have been curious
- 2:06:32about our Patreon one and you want to kind of maybe make a one
- 2:06:36time donation to the Trevor Project while also getting
- 2:06:39something out of it, you can subscribe to us for a month,
- 2:06:42download all of our shit and then.
- 2:06:45Leave. Yeah, our feelings won't be
- 2:06:47hurt. We just want to well.
- 2:06:49We appreciate the contribution. Yeah, we just wanna get the
- 2:06:51Trevor Project as much money as they can possibly get because
- 2:06:55they're doing great work. They're supporting LGBTQ youth
- 2:06:58who, as we know in our society, are not getting as much support
- 2:07:04as they want, need and deserve. Yeah, so that means?
- 2:07:09All of our movies are going to be focusing around queer themes
- 2:07:13in one way or another, be it that somebody involved in the
- 2:07:17production of it, writer, director, actor, producer or
- 2:07:19something. They are LGBTQ themselves.
- 2:07:23Maybe there's an LGBTQ plot line, or maybe there's.
- 2:07:26Just. A lot of an LGBTQ reading of a
- 2:07:30movie. Yeah, just.
- 2:07:31A lot of things, yeah. Yes, so.
- 2:07:34Jessie does like a whole segment on the episodes too, where she
- 2:07:37goes into like the readings of all this stuff and why it's
- 2:07:39important to the LGBT community so.
- 2:07:42Yes, that's what I did last year, was I either looked into
- 2:07:45stuff that tied the movie into it, if it wasn't necessarily
- 2:07:49explicit, or if it was explicit, then I just provided some
- 2:07:53statistics that I found to be interesting.
- 2:07:55Yeah. So that's what we're doing again
- 2:07:58this year. It's very important to us and
- 2:08:00it's very exciting for us. So what's our first movie of
- 2:08:04Pride Month then? So our first movie of Pride
- 2:08:06Month is actually something I've been wanting to watch for a
- 2:08:08while and I didn't really realize I hadn't watch.
- 2:08:12I thought I had watched it and I got it mixed up with a different
- 2:08:15similar It's either the same director, same producer or
- 2:08:19writer, I forget exactly. I was getting it confused with
- 2:08:22The Devil's Carnival, but it's actually a different horror
- 2:08:28musical and it is in fact Repo the Genetic Opera, which I
- 2:08:32learned when I was listening to the The Sensit Prom coverage of
- 2:08:37it recently that I haven't seen this, but IA 100% need to see
- 2:08:42this. Mm hmm.
- 2:08:43And we're at the end of the month right now.
- 2:08:46And I know normally that makes it hard to say where it's gonna
- 2:08:51be available to watch, but this is generally an accessible movie
- 2:08:55cuz right now it's on several free streaming services.
- 2:08:58It's on Tubi, Pluto TV, Fandango at home, YouTube Primetime,
- 2:09:02Prime Premium, YouTube TV Premium, or you can rent it from
- 2:09:05Google Play. So everywhere, yes.
- 2:09:07So I'm very excited to watch this.
- 2:09:09Paris Hilton, Bill Mosley, they're involved in it, told
- 2:09:14Travis. He knows who the director is,
- 2:09:16but he doesn't actually know who the director is.
- 2:09:18I'm not gonna look it up either. Yes.
- 2:09:19I want you to see. Very excited for this reveal.
- 2:09:22OK, cool. His mind's gonna be.
- 2:09:24Blown if you guys already know. We'll see.
- 2:09:28We'll see. I'm gonna blow your mind.
- 2:09:29I'm sure it will be. I'm excited.
- 2:09:31I don't know. I've heard a lot about this
- 2:09:32movie, so I'm sure it'll be a good time.
- 2:09:34I think it's gonna be fun. I'm very excited about it.
- 2:09:36I learned some interesting stuff listening to other coverage of
- 2:09:40it, and I'm excited to do some independent research of my own
- 2:09:42stuff. All right.
- 2:09:43Well, I think we are 2 1/2 hours in this so.
