- 0:00Speaker 1: Football and four powered by the Inside of the Burns podcast.
- 0:03Speaker 1: It is brought you by our friends at the Fanatics
- 0:05Speaker 1: Sports Book at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City. Gonna
- 0:09Speaker 1: be a great week coming up in two weeks the
- 0:12Speaker 1: start of March Madness. Two weeks from today, the Madness begins.
- 0:17Speaker 1: You can listen to it all right here on ninety
- 0:19Speaker 1: seven to three ESPN from noon to midnight Thursday and Friday.
- 0:23Speaker 1: We got you covered right now. We got you covered
- 0:25Speaker 1: on the Eagles offseason, which gets underway on Monday with
- 0:29Speaker 1: the start of the legal tampering period. And of course,
- 0:32Speaker 1: no better guy to talk to you about free agency
- 0:35Speaker 1: and the draft than Andrew to Checko from the Inside
- 0:38Speaker 1: of the Birds podcast Inside the Birds dot Com and he
- 0:41Speaker 1: joins me now on the Sports Bash for today's football
- 0:45Speaker 1: at four. Andrew, Welcome back, buddy. How are you.
- 0:48Speaker 2: What's going on, Mike? Yeah, the month of March might
- 0:50Speaker 2: be my favorite month on the sports calendar.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Yeah, we're ready to go. I mean March Manness. We
- 0:55Speaker 1: just were talking about our favorite events. March Madness would
- 0:58Speaker 1: be number one. The NFL Playoffs would be up there,
- 1:01Speaker 1: Draft season. I love talking to you about the draft
- 1:04Speaker 1: but we do have the startup free agency and all
- 1:06Speaker 1: this AJ Brown stuff. I know you're not a big
- 1:09Speaker 1: rumors guy in all that speculation, But as we get
- 1:13Speaker 1: ready for Monday, do we anticipate AJ Brown being here
- 1:18Speaker 1: or someplace else by the next time you and I
- 1:21Speaker 1: have a conversation.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Well, there's no rush for the Eagles to unload AJ Brown.
- 1:25Speaker 2: They don't have to do anything. He's under contract, and
- 1:27Speaker 2: now the Eagles hold all the cards. You saw what
- 1:29Speaker 2: happened with DJ Moore. He commanded a second round pick,
- 1:33Speaker 2: So the cost for aj is first round pick, which
- 1:36Speaker 2: it should be, and the Eagles are playing it well.
- 1:39Speaker 2: But I don't know that they're going to be in
- 1:40Speaker 2: any rush to get anything done. Now. Will a team
- 1:43Speaker 2: be a little bit more hasty and trying to get
- 1:45Speaker 2: something done, perhaps, but I don't view it as something
- 1:49Speaker 2: that's going to be taken care of in the immediacy.
- 1:52Speaker 2: But the Eagles are going to continue to listen, but
- 1:55Speaker 2: nothing's really changed. They're going to have to be blown
- 1:57Speaker 2: away by an offer in order for them to to
- 2:00Speaker 2: move off of their top receiver.
- 2:01Speaker 1: All right, you wrote a piece over at Inside the
- 2:04Speaker 1: Birds dot Com that leads us into this because if
- 2:06Speaker 1: aj Bird Brown is not with the Birds, even if
- 2:09Speaker 1: he is with the Birds, do you think they need
- 2:11Speaker 1: to look at some receiving options and some possible when
- 2:16Speaker 1: we know they need a tight end most likely if
- 2:18Speaker 1: Goddard walks, but any receivers in the free agent markers,
- 2:22Speaker 1: that's something they probably would have to trade, excuse me,
- 2:25Speaker 1: draft if they ended up moving on from AJ Brown.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the free agent class is not very
- 2:32Speaker 2: deep at wide receiver. If you're getting the receiver in
- 2:35Speaker 2: free agency, it's going to be a supplemental type of
- 2:37Speaker 2: player who can kind of maybe fill that Johan Dotson roll.
- 2:40Speaker 2: But Mike, I think right now they need to draft
- 2:42Speaker 2: the receiver. And I say that because you look at
- 2:45Speaker 2: the defensive side of the ball, A lot of money
- 2:47Speaker 2: is going to have to be invested on that side.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Now that's the pendulum swinging that on the offensive side,
- 2:52Speaker 2: the Eagles are going to have to start to draft
- 2:53Speaker 2: and get younger and more cost effective. And so one
- 2:57Speaker 2: of the more preeminent positions on the offensive is wide receiver.
- 3:01Speaker 2: And this draft has a lot towards the top of
- 3:03Speaker 2: the draft, and I look at where the Eagles sit
- 3:05Speaker 2: at picked fifty four, and that seems like an optimal
- 3:07Speaker 2: spot if they want to go and get one.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I was gonna say, is this free agent class, You're right?
- 3:14Speaker 1: I mean you got Romeo Dobbs, Wandell Robinson kind of interesting.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Is maybe a slot guy? I feel like, see if
- 3:18Speaker 1: you agree, Andrew, this team has constantly lacked that you know,
- 3:24Speaker 1: little slot guy, the undersized, you know guy between the
- 3:27Speaker 1: hash marks. He's got some speed or shortthands. They've never
- 3:31Speaker 1: really had a great going back to. I guess the
- 3:33Speaker 1: best one was Agalar in twenty seventeen, but even he
- 3:36Speaker 1: wasn't like a classic slot guy.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Now, Jason Levan is the first player who comes to
- 3:41Speaker 2: mind as being the prototypical slot guy. Dependable shorthands, tough
- 3:46Speaker 2: as nails. But yeah, they don't really have that short
- 3:49Speaker 2: area of quickness inside receiver guy like maybe the Patriots
- 3:52Speaker 2: had with Danny Amandola and Wes Welker and Julian Edelman.
- 3:57Speaker 2: But I don't know that this offense requires a player
- 4:00Speaker 2: like that. I look at someone like a Jalen Naylor,
- 4:03Speaker 2: who is with the Minnesota Vikings for at least a
- 4:05Speaker 2: few more days and five eleven two hundred pounds. He
- 4:09Speaker 2: was obviously not going to see a healthy amount of
- 4:12Speaker 2: targets given that they have Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison.
- 4:15Speaker 2: But he's tough. He blocks from that position, which is
- 4:19Speaker 2: something that the Eagles really value. So it depends on
- 4:22Speaker 2: what team and what system you run. But what the
- 4:24Speaker 2: Eagles have proven over their time with Nick Sirianni is
- 4:27Speaker 2: that they really value that blocking type of wide receiver
- 4:30Speaker 2: who's going to do the dirty work and free up
- 4:32Speaker 2: teammates to do some things. So I would look for
- 4:35Speaker 2: that as well. But I'm also curious because the Eagles
- 4:38Speaker 2: don't have a manufactured touch player and they probably imagine
- 4:43Speaker 2: they were getting that in and I have spent a
- 4:45Speaker 2: couple of years ago, but that never panned out. And
- 4:48Speaker 2: so I look at someone like an Omar Cooper out
- 4:51Speaker 2: of Indiana, who probably his stock is rising, but if
- 4:56Speaker 2: the Eagles want to get him, they're going to have
- 4:58Speaker 2: to be aggressive. But he is someone who gets a
- 4:59Speaker 2: lot yards after the catch. You can find creative ways
- 5:02Speaker 2: to move him around formation to get him the football.
- 5:05Speaker 2: They've really lacked for a player like that. And in fact,
- 5:08Speaker 2: there is a pro day going on today and it's
- 5:10Speaker 2: Navy and there's a player by the name of Eli
- 5:13Speaker 2: heiden heiden Reich that is a wide receiver running back
- 5:18Speaker 2: five to eleven, one hundred and ninety eight pounds thereabouts.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Had seventy seven carries last season for almost five hundred yards.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Last year had fifty one catches for nearly a thousand yards.
- 5:29Speaker 2: So he's sort of a dual threat. Who's going to
- 5:31Speaker 2: go on Day three? Heighten Reich, Eli Heidenreich, So I'm
- 5:34Speaker 2: curious to see what his numbers come back as now today.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Omar Cooper for you, he's a wide receiver out of Indiana.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Would he be a guy at twenty three that you
- 5:43Speaker 1: would have to get him there?
- 5:45Speaker 2: I think that's a little early. You could trade back
- 5:48Speaker 2: in the first round, which Howie Roseman has proven that
- 5:50Speaker 2: will either trade up or trade down. He's very active,
- 5:53Speaker 2: he doesn't like to stand pat. But that would be
- 5:55Speaker 2: a player Mike that if you wanted to get a
- 5:57Speaker 2: Nomar Cooper, you could probably trade down the first round
- 6:00Speaker 2: and secure him. But at fifty four you're not going
- 6:03Speaker 2: to get a player like that. You're more looking at
- 6:05Speaker 2: a Chris Bell from Louisville who I really like, or
- 6:09Speaker 2: a Chris Brazil from Tennessee another really good player, and
- 6:13Speaker 2: so I think what I'm imagining this offense to look like,
- 6:18Speaker 2: and a player who could fit pretty well. Omar Cooper
- 6:21Speaker 2: is one of them, and Chris Bell. If the Eagles
- 6:24Speaker 2: don't retain AJ Brown for whatever reason, he is sort
- 6:28Speaker 2: of a He's built like AJ's about six one, two
- 6:31Speaker 2: hundred and twenty pounds and really physical. Is your prototypical
- 6:36Speaker 2: X and I think that he would be a good
- 6:38Speaker 2: option there at fifty four if if they need, if
- 6:41Speaker 2: they so choose to add a player there.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Andrew to checkout football for from the Inside the Birds
- 6:45Speaker 1: podcast Inside the Birds dot Com. Dallas Goddard, last you're
- 6:48Speaker 1: a lot of speculation, Andrew that he would be gone.
- 6:51Speaker 1: They ended up finding a way to bring him back.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Are you optimistic that they can get him back? And
- 6:57Speaker 1: if not, they do not have a tight end on
- 6:58Speaker 1: the roster. Is that a spot where you know last
- 7:02Speaker 1: year in free agency they kind of made moves in
- 7:04Speaker 1: anticipation that he wouldn't be back. They brought in Grantson
- 7:06Speaker 1: and Harrison Bryant. Obviously these two guys didn't have much
- 7:09Speaker 1: of an impact. But if Goddard's gone, can they do
- 7:13Speaker 1: anything in free agency there.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Yeah, So I went into the combine thinking that the
- 7:18Speaker 2: Eagles were going to do whatever they could to keep
- 7:20Speaker 2: Dallas gotdter and that it may not cost all that much,
- 7:23Speaker 2: knowing that he's thirty one, that he has an injury
- 7:25Speaker 2: history and all that. But then I left the combine
- 7:28Speaker 2: wondering how the Eagles were going to be able to
- 7:31Speaker 2: do that, just talking to people, listening to Howie Roseman,
- 7:34Speaker 2: Nick Sirianni, and it's going to be an offseason where
- 7:37Speaker 2: it might not be the maintenance offseason of last year,
- 7:39Speaker 2: but you're going to have to make some tough decisions.
- 7:41Speaker 2: And so I look at it like this. The Eagles
- 7:44Speaker 2: last May agreed to they reached the resolution with Dallas
- 7:49Speaker 2: Goddard one year ten million. Well, one would presume that
- 7:52Speaker 2: the price would go up. And if they were a
- 7:55Speaker 2: little reluctant to give Dallas got a ten million last year,
- 7:59Speaker 2: well he just had sixty catches, a career high, eleven
- 8:01Speaker 2: touchdowns a career high. I would imagine that with free agency,
- 8:05Speaker 2: as is usually the case, the price alway goes up.
- 8:08Speaker 2: But there's the injury history, there's the demonstrator performance for
- 8:13Speaker 2: one team, and the history with the organization that I
- 8:16Speaker 2: think could help the Eagles. But all things being considered,
- 8:18Speaker 2: I would imagine that Dallas Godder is playing somewhere else
- 8:21Speaker 2: next season.
- 8:21Speaker 1: All right, there's a lot of talk too. I mean,
- 8:23Speaker 1: we were at the Super Bowl at Radio Row and
- 8:25Speaker 1: there was a lot of people buzzing about Christian Parker
- 8:28Speaker 1: when he got hired. And now you're starting to hear
- 8:30Speaker 1: the buzz he might want to take some of his
- 8:32Speaker 1: buddies with him. One Red Blanketship, who obviously was coached
- 8:35Speaker 1: by Parker, Nakobe Dean, who probably has a very slim
- 8:39Speaker 1: chance of returning to Philadelphia, and even possibly Jalen Phillips apparently.
- 8:43Speaker 1: You know, there's a lot of buzz this time of
- 8:45Speaker 1: the year about stuff, but could you imagine some of
- 8:48Speaker 1: those guys landing in Dallas.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Yeah, so Jalen Phillips is going to be the priority.
- 8:54Speaker 2: What he commands on the open market is sort of
- 8:56Speaker 2: a mystery right right now because of the injuries that
- 8:59Speaker 2: he's had in his past. But he's going to be
- 9:00Speaker 2: twenty seven years old. He fits this scheme, he fits
- 9:04Speaker 2: the culture, he loves being in Philadelphia. Now there ultimately
- 9:07Speaker 2: has to be a walkaway price and for me, I
- 9:10Speaker 2: think that twenty four or twenty five mil might be
- 9:13Speaker 2: a little rich for my blood if I'm the Eagles.
- 9:16Speaker 2: But I think that he's going to be the priority there.
- 9:18Speaker 2: But yes, I can imagine a lot of these players
- 9:21Speaker 2: flocking to Dallas, and it sounds easier said than done
- 9:24Speaker 2: because it's not always as simple as well. Christian Parker
- 9:27Speaker 2: is the defensive coordinator in Dallas, he knows a lot
- 9:30Speaker 2: of these guys from Philadelphia. A lot of these players
- 9:33Speaker 2: are going to have considerable amount of suitors. But someone
- 9:36Speaker 2: like a Re Blankenship, for example, if his estimated cost
- 9:40Speaker 2: is seven a little over seven mil, if I'm the Eagles,
- 9:43Speaker 2: sign me up for that. But if it goes up
- 9:45Speaker 2: a little bit and trends towards the nine or ten
- 9:48Speaker 2: million mark, I'm finding another solution there. And I would
- 9:51Speaker 2: imagine that someone like Christian Parker, who oversaw the defensive
- 9:54Speaker 2: back room, he knows what Red Blankenship's all about. He
- 9:57Speaker 2: can be a team captain a culture much like Nikobe Dean.
- 10:01Speaker 2: And when Christian Parker spoke, and I listened to his
- 10:04Speaker 2: opening press conference twice because I was so impressed with
- 10:07Speaker 2: how he conducted himself. He said, it all starts up front,
- 10:11Speaker 2: affecting the quarterback and stopping the run, and those are
- 10:15Speaker 2: two things that Nikobe Dean does very well in addition
- 10:17Speaker 2: to being a tremendous presence in the locker room.
- 10:20Speaker 1: All right, Andrew, why I was gone? You know the Eagles?
- 10:24Speaker 1: You know you mentioned Parker goes there. But I guess
- 10:26Speaker 1: actually I got back by the time this happened. Jared
- 10:29Speaker 1: Johnson on Sunday they brought him in too, Yeah, Jarrod Johnson,
- 10:33Speaker 1: they brought him in here too, Josh Gizzard, along with
- 10:37Speaker 1: Sean Manyon. Too many cooks in the kitchen? Or are
- 10:40Speaker 1: you really excited to see? Is this a clear sign
- 10:43Speaker 1: that the Eagles are one hundred percent behind changing what
- 10:49Speaker 1: their offense has been the first five years of Nick
- 10:51Speaker 1: Sirianni's tenure.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Well, I wouldn't be being truthful if I didn't tell
- 10:56Speaker 2: you that it conjured shades of twenty twenty a little
- 10:58Speaker 2: bit with the Andrew b and Rich Gangarellos and Marty morningwigs.
- 11:02Speaker 2: But I think to a larger point here, it does
- 11:06Speaker 2: show you, and it indicates that the Eagles are all
- 11:09Speaker 2: in on trying to reimagine this offense and modernize it
- 11:12Speaker 2: and take it to the next level. And they've equipped
- 11:14Speaker 2: themselves with a lot of brilliant offensive minds, at least
- 11:18Speaker 2: that's what they're being billed as. And a lot of
- 11:20Speaker 2: the people that I've spoken to behind the scenes since
- 11:23Speaker 2: the hiring a Sean Manning and some of these other
- 11:25Speaker 2: coaches coming on board really supports that. And what you've
- 11:28Speaker 2: done now is you've added a lot of different coaches,
- 11:31Speaker 2: with some having different backgrounds, and I'd imagine it's going
- 11:34Speaker 2: to be a collaborative approach. Whether it's too many coaches, well,
- 11:38Speaker 2: that remains to be seen. But I am intrigued. And
- 11:41Speaker 2: there's something to be said for the Eagles who interviewed
- 11:44Speaker 2: Girod Johnson for the offensive coordinator job. When Kellen Moore
- 11:49Speaker 2: got the job, interviewed for him again. He was a finalist,
- 11:51Speaker 2: one of seven finalists, and they were found a way
- 11:54Speaker 2: to keep him on to get him onto the staff.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Josh Garzart he interviewed for the job, he's on staff,
- 12:01Speaker 2: and you also have Sean Mannion. So those are obviously
- 12:03Speaker 2: three coaches that impress the Eagles throughout the stages of
- 12:06Speaker 2: the interview process, and now they're all working together to
- 12:10Speaker 2: try to get this thing headed in the right direction.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Yeah, that is an interesting you know it, as you mentioned,
- 12:16Speaker 1: too many cooks in the kitchen. Scandirella, you're the you know,
- 12:18Speaker 1: past game coordinator guy, and you do this, and that
- 12:21Speaker 1: guy does that. He calls plays on third downs, you
- 12:23Speaker 1: call plays on second down? Or is it all going
- 12:25Speaker 1: to be Sean Manion and you just have a lot
- 12:27Speaker 1: more talented coaches in there. You hope that's the way
- 12:30Speaker 1: it goes. I want to get your thoughts on the
- 12:32Speaker 1: trade today. DJ Moore to the Bills. It's a second
- 12:35Speaker 1: round pick that goes to Chicago. Chicago sends more and
- 12:37Speaker 1: a fifth rounder, and I guess that kind of shows
- 12:41Speaker 1: you that what Howie Roseman's asking for does make a
- 12:44Speaker 1: lot of sense. And then if you do in fact,
- 12:46Speaker 1: and I don't think they want to trade AJ Brown
- 12:48Speaker 1: or nor will they, but if they do, it seems
- 12:50Speaker 1: like you got to get a better deal than what
- 12:52Speaker 1: DJ Moore got, and that deal there helps Philadelphia out.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, you're also correct on that the Eagles don't
- 12:58Speaker 2: want to move AJ Brown and they don't have to.
- 13:01Speaker 2: That's why there's not a lot of pressure on their end,
- 13:04Speaker 2: because if they're blown away by a trade that helps
- 13:07Speaker 2: them acquire assets and further reconstruct the team and set
- 13:11Speaker 2: them up for a sustame success. Well, then Hollie Rosen's
- 13:14Speaker 2: gonna take advantage. But yes, when you look at what
- 13:17Speaker 2: DJ Moore commanded a second round pick, that was a
- 13:19Speaker 2: little bit of a head scratcher to me. I thought
- 13:21Speaker 2: it was a little rich. I should say DJ Moore
- 13:23Speaker 2: is a good player, not a great player. AJ Brown
- 13:26Speaker 2: is still he still has a couple of years of
- 13:29Speaker 2: playing at an elite level at the position. And I've
- 13:33Speaker 2: said this the entire time, and I maintained this. He
- 13:35Speaker 2: is worth a first round pick. And unless the Eagles
- 13:38Speaker 2: get not only a first round pick but also something
- 13:40Speaker 2: else to sweeten the deal, I would imagine somewhere in
- 13:43Speaker 2: the top one hundred, they're not gonna move them. And
- 13:47Speaker 2: that's what a player of his caliber, of his talent commands,
- 13:50Speaker 2: and Eagles from the beginning of this have played it
- 13:53Speaker 2: to a t.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Yeah, And I know that a lot of people I'm
- 13:58Speaker 1: not in the camp of Like, there's a lot of
- 14:00Speaker 1: people that I come across. I'm sure you do too,
- 14:02Speaker 1: Andrew that are just like I'm tired of AJ move
- 14:04Speaker 1: on from him. He doesn't want to be here. I
- 14:06Speaker 1: don't get that sense. I don't think AJ doesn't want
- 14:09Speaker 1: to be in Philly because I can't get along with people.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I don't like this guy. I think he just wanted
- 14:14Speaker 1: a bigger role in the offense.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'm glad you put it that way. It's
- 14:19Speaker 2: not because of interpersonal dynamics. That has nothing to do
- 14:22Speaker 2: with it. It has to do with AJ and what he
- 14:25Speaker 2: wants to where he believes he can take his game,
- 14:28Speaker 2: his overall involvement and contributions to an offense. And there's
- 14:33Speaker 2: many times where he's a focal point, but then there's
- 14:35Speaker 2: other weeks where he's not involved as much. And if
- 14:38Speaker 2: you remember back to the post that he had, I
- 14:40Speaker 2: think it might have been after the parade. He said
- 14:43Speaker 2: the biggest thrill that he gets in this game is
- 14:46Speaker 2: by dominating his opponent and seeing them hang their head
- 14:50Speaker 2: as they surrender. And there's just the preparation, the process
- 14:54Speaker 2: of going through everything. He believes that he could be
- 14:58Speaker 2: a Hall of Famer. He's on that trajectory that he
- 15:00Speaker 2: can be among the best, whether or not he feels
- 15:02Speaker 2: that this offense with this personnel can can sort of
- 15:07Speaker 2: amend to that. I mean, we're gonna it would suggest
- 15:10Speaker 2: not it's not a high volume passing attack. And but
- 15:13Speaker 2: I do think that if you're able to talk to aj,
- 15:15Speaker 2: if Sean Manning is able to sit him down, express
- 15:19Speaker 2: his vision for the offense with conviction and illustrate a
- 15:23Speaker 2: way to get him involved early in games, allow him
- 15:26Speaker 2: to take advantage of his ability to run after the catch,
- 15:28Speaker 2: you would probably be able to That would probably be
- 15:31Speaker 2: an easy sell.
- 15:32Speaker 1: All right, Andrew, got to get a draft question for
- 15:35Speaker 1: you before we get out of here. Obviously the draft
- 15:37Speaker 1: is uh, now we're into the you know, about two
- 15:40Speaker 1: months from now, you know, obviously the end of April.
- 15:42Speaker 1: While we're looking at draft. Favorite position, deepest position in
- 15:47Speaker 1: this draft class.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Oh, I'll say tight end. I've come.
- 15:52Speaker 1: That's a good thing.
- 15:53Speaker 2: I talked to a bunch of from at the NFL
- 15:55Speaker 2: scouting combine. You know, I think Kenyon sadik Is he's
- 15:59Speaker 2: the head of the class here and he kind of
- 16:01Speaker 2: reminds me lot of Vernon Davis, explosive athlete. Then you
- 16:05Speaker 2: have Eli Stowers, and Eli Stowers sort of reminds me
- 16:08Speaker 2: a little bit of Evan Ingram and body type and
- 16:10Speaker 2: fluidity and his ability to maneuver as a pass catcher.
